- 0:00Back at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue. Of course, we had a busy Monday today.
- 0:03The women won by twenty today over Creighton. The men are in Omaha
- 0:07tomorrow the unanimous number one in the country. Mike and Wayner en route eight
- 0:12thirty for the tip off tomorrow night eight o'clock pregame on the network. Thursday,
- 0:17I've got Gino at Bears at the cafe or sorry, although we could
- 0:21have him here someday, and that's that's helped next year. We had to
- 0:23do that next year. We're supposed to do that last season, and then
- 0:27unfortunately Gino's mom passed away the untimely there and then Friday, we've got hockey
- 0:30six forty five in the radio. You kind of second ranked bu Yeah,
- 0:37grats the Gino surpassing Mike Krychevski yeap coach k career win number twelve oh three.
- 0:42All right. A couple of weeks ago, during one of the Zoom
- 0:46calls, you talked about John Spett and his improvement, and you mentioned that
- 0:49a he's a rink rat would be he watches more video than anybody on this
- 0:54team. What's he looking for when he watches the video? Not only have
- 0:57games. Mind you he watches practice too, right, Yeah, he watched
- 1:00There's a lot of practice. I think you know, the players have access
- 1:03to watch practice. We film it every day, and I think he just
- 1:07likes to see his technique and how he's handling certain plays and every now and
- 1:11then, if you know it was a bad breakout, he wants to understand
- 1:15why it was a bad breakout. So he's just, uh, he's a
- 1:21hockey junkie and just loves everything about the sport, the film, playing,
- 1:26skill work, everything. And do you see that if and when his playing
- 1:32career comes to a close, that coaching could be a good fit for him.
- 1:34I think so I've told him that. Yeah, I think he's going
- 1:38to make a great coach someday. Just he really has a good understanding of
- 1:42how the game is played. Do you have any other guys that might fit
- 1:46that bill with his current group coaching wise, Yeah, I'm sure there are.
- 1:52I mean, Hudson could be. I don't know if he's even interested
- 1:55in it, you know, Jake Flynt like, we have a lot lot
- 2:00of guys that are really I would say, good hockey guys and enjoy the
- 2:06sport. So I don't know, John spetso definitely does stick out to me
- 2:14on this team. And so John's beets when you were had those comments in
- 2:16the Zoom call, you were saying, you know, watch his film,
- 2:20but he's really good at breaking stuff down. So when you kids that arrive
- 2:23as freshman and maybe they've never watched film before, what are some of the
- 2:27common mistakes not on the ice, But if you're sitting there watching film,
- 2:30you have to learn how to watch films. So what do you try to
- 2:35tell those guys of, like this is how you break down your game?
- 2:38Yeah, typically they're just watching their shifts. A lot of times they don't
- 2:44watch it like Tyler might watch it to pick up another team's tendencies. Although
- 2:49you know Wyatt Newpower was here early in the year and spoke to the kids
- 2:53and told him that he that's very beneficial for him when he's playing pro.
- 2:59He wants to can see how a team's going to four check, so he
- 3:01knows how to what he's going to look for on a breakout. So there
- 3:06are certain things, but you know, the game moves so fast. It's
- 3:09not set like football or even basketball to some extent, where you can draw
- 3:15up a play and run a pick and have different options. Like the game
- 3:20is so fluid and the puck turns over and change his hands so quickly.
- 3:23It's hard to script anything in our sport. So right now most of the
- 3:29kids just watching their own shifts and they'll see like, yeah, you know,
- 3:32it should be in a different spot, you know, here offensively or
- 3:36defensively, and it's not the cat and mouse of a pitcher batter in baseball.
- 3:40No, no, no, yeah, there's nothing like that. I
- 3:43got twitter question here, thoughts on Owen Simpson this season. What do you
- 3:46think his role will be down the stretch. Well, we'll see. I
- 3:51don't know. You know, he's he's I don't know how many games he's
- 3:53played in, probably ten to twelve games. You know, we have a
- 3:59lot of common petition back there on defense, and I think that he's certainly
- 4:04capable of playing minutes for us. And right now it's just kind of a
- 4:08numbers game because Jack Pascucci's come in and played pretty well. So but I
- 4:15still believe Owen can help us at some point fourteen games and Piscucci's played eighteen.
- 4:18More physical. Jack's probably a little more physical than Owen. Yeah,
- 4:24I would say that, And at six' five for Owen Simpson. I
- 4:27mean that that size, that height, how can he or how does he
- 4:30use that to his advantage? Well, I mean when you're six five and
- 4:38he's long and lean, so he you know, I should be able to
- 4:41use your stick to be able to you know, deflect shots with your stick
- 4:46or defend really well with your stick. So he still probably has to put
- 4:50a little more weight on and strength. So but you know, again he's
- 4:56young, he's only a freshman. You lost two nothing and re won t
- 5:00U Mass last weekend, I mean Friday night. Well, I think our
- 5:04city played Friday night right again, I thought he played pretty well. You
- 5:08know. The tough thing is it's like, you know, the fact that
- 5:12the goal scoring has been has been tough to come by, especially at home.
- 5:15I mean, you've got to be almost perfect. And I thought we
- 5:16talked about this in the pregame about the Providence series where yeah, they lost
- 5:20five nothing, but I thought Arsity played fantastic in that game. He did,
- 5:24He played and he rebounded really well and played a solid sixty against HU
- 5:27Mass. Yeah, I mean the last two times we haven't scored a goal
- 5:30for him, So it's hard to win games if we don't score goals,
- 5:31so our city has been playing. Uh, you know, I think very
- 5:36solid for us, isn't That is he taken not as a because he's very
- 5:42demonstrative in his in his movements. As he started to economize that, I
- 5:46think he has. I think, you know, he's done a lot of
- 5:47work with Vince and they've certainly worked on that. He had a great week
- 5:53of practice last week. So I think it is he is taken to the
- 5:58coaching and implement and thing it into his game. I'm going to say.
- 6:00So you can tell that it's a little bit of a different look, but
- 6:05does look like he's fighting it. It looks like it's just all kind of
- 6:09you know, it's starting to become second nature when he plays within his post
- 6:13lines. He's a very effective goaltender, you know, so because he's big,
- 6:17and he's he's skilled, and he's athletic. He really is. So
- 6:24that's a good combination. When we see the guys warm up, the goalies
- 6:27especially, they have the balls and they're thrown up against the wall. I
- 6:30mean that's strictly for reflexes. What are type of things do they do off
- 6:33ice to train their minds to be a goaltender from a reflex standpoint. Yeah,
- 6:38well, well like some of that stuff, I don't really know,
- 6:43Bob. I mean, Vince, I'm sure has different things that they does
- 6:47with him, so I need as Vince. Yeah, he'd probably be better
- 6:50at that. I mean I watched what they do on the ice. I
- 6:54watch how they prepare on the ice. Off the ice, I see him
- 6:58throwing the balls up against the wall and things like that. It's just I
- 7:00hand coordination, right right. Okay, we'll go to a break here and
- 7:04then we'll come back with calv a little later on. It's Jake Richard and
- 7:09Matthew Wood. Adam did those interviews earlier today. As we get set for
- 7:12another weekend of hockey, b you Friday at Home six forty five on the
- 7:15radio and then Saturday night up at Aganis seven oh five face off. Both
- 7:19games available on ESPN Plus. It's the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show on Learfield Live
- 7:24for Bear Smokeouts, Barbecue and Hartford. We're back in just a mom
