Transcript
- 0:13So I was auditing an agency client stack yesterday, right, and every single custom
- 0:17block toolbar button was just, um, completely dead.
- 0:22Zero clicks registering.
- 0:23And it all traces back to what is dropping on August 19, 2026.
- 0:28WordPress 7.1 Beta 4 just hit with more than 114 updates across Core and Editor,
- 0:3451 in the Editor and 63 in Core.
- 0:37And the headline is, the post editor canvas is now fully isolated inside an iframe
- 0:42for all themes.
- 0:43No bypasses left.
- 0:44114 updates is massive, but honestly, this full iframe enforcement was long overdue.
- 0:51If you are building for AI agents or automated workspaces, having a clean,
- 0:55predictable canvas DOM instead of top level admin clutter polluted by random scripts
- 1:00is the only way forward.
- 1:02Wait, but Ben, when you say isolated canvas, what happens to all those legacy
- 1:06scripts that agency devs wrote over the last five years?
- 1:09They break, Ido.
- 1:10Completely break.
- 1:12If your code uses document.addEventListener for click events,
- 1:15it is listening to the top level admin window, not the iframe where the actual
- 1:19content lives.
- 1:21In 7.1, if a user clicks inside the block canvas, document.addEventListener never
- 1:26even sees it.
- 1:27You have to refactor using useRefEffect from wordpress compose and scope your
- 1:32document queries to element.ownerDocument and defaultView.
- 1:36Which is clean architecture!
- 1:38You should never have been attaching global event listeners to the root window to
- 1:41manage a block state anyway.
- 1:43It, it, it was a total hack.
- 1:45Easy for you to say, Ben!
- 1:47I have to fix three dozen client sites before August 19!
- 1:51And it is not just JavaScript.
- 1:52CSS classes are evaporating too.
- 1:55If your agency enqueue script hooked into enqueue block editor assets and targeted
- 2:00dot wp admin or body dot block editor page, guess what?
- 2:05Those classes do not exist inside the clean iframe body.
- 2:08You have to migrate to declaring editorStyle directly inside your block dot json
- 2:13file.
- 2:13So if an agency relies on those old PHP hooks, their block styling in the editor
- 2:17just vanishes overnight when 7.1 lands?
- 2:20Poof!
- 2:21Gone.
- 2:22Plain white text on a white canvas in the backend, even if the front end looks fine.
- 2:27It is a absolute nightmare for client handoffs.
- 2:30Okay, but look at what we get in return.
- 2:31In Beta 3, they fixed one of the most annoying design issues in Gutenberg.
- 2:35Previously, applying local block style changes globally was an all or nothing
- 2:40action.
- 2:40Now in 7.1, you can push local adjustments to global styles per property.
- 2:45Like, you can push just the padding or just the typography without overwriting the
- 2:50entire site wide theme defaults.
- 2:52Wait, so per property means if I tweak line height on one heading,
- 2:56I can sync just line height globally, leaving custom colors untouched?
- 3:00Exactly.
- 3:00It gives granular control, which actually protects site design integrity.
- 3:04But speaking of breaking things, what about third party JavaScript libraries?
- 3:08Oh, that is the second major trap.
- 3:10If you are using third party scripts like Masonry layout tools or slider components
- 3:14that rely on document.querySelectorAll under the hood, they fail completely inside
- 3:19the canvas.
- 3:20Plus, if you test with Gutenberg 23.4 and turn on the experimental React 19 runtime
- 3:26flag, any hidden state bugs or bad DOM mutations will explode immediately.
- 3:30So what is the exact pre flight checklist for developers to survive the August 19,
- 3:352026 release?
- 3:36First, turn on SCRIPT DEBUG in your wp config to expose console deprecation
- 3:41warnings.
- 3:43Second, run dual environment testing.
- 3:46Compare your site running Gutenberg forced iframe against the 7.0 fallback.
- 3:51And third, update your block dot json files to apiVersion 3 and declare editorStyle
- 3:57properly.
- 3:58Do the work now, clean up your DOM queries, and your site will be ready for 7.1 and
- 4:02future AI workflows alike.
- 4:04Alright, time to go check my block dot json files!
