- 0:26God's word. All right, if you guys would go
- 0:33ahead and open up with me to Luke chapter 24, the Gospel of
- 0:38Luke. If you're not familiar with the
- 0:39Bible, halfway through, there is a section, says, New Testaments
- 0:45about halfway a little more than halfway and it would be the
- 0:48third book to the right will be the Gospel of Luke.
- 0:52So we're going to be in chapter 24.
- 0:55We're going to start at verse 13.
- 0:59And the reason why I chose this passage, even though it's not a
- 1:01very Christmassy message is because God's just been turning
- 1:05it in my heart that's been weighing in my heart.
- 1:08I didn't know that I would be teaching until Friday and so
- 1:13when it came up I was like, oh, I think this is why the Lord has
- 1:17given this to me. And so I want to be faithful to
- 1:20bring it but even at Christmas is were fixing our eyes on
- 1:23Jesus. We remind ourselves that the
- 1:25King has come, that he is establishing his Kingdom that
- 1:29his Reign is coming. We read a 600 years before.
- 1:33Jesus was born and Isaiah chapter 9, it's prophesied.
- 1:37Instead of Jesus that the people who were walking in darkness,
- 1:42they saw a great light and the light Shone upon them, right?
- 1:46And so, the Lord is establishing the kingdom of Jesus.
- 1:52And it's ever-expanding, it's an ever expanding Empire of Grace.
- 1:57That Jesus is putting together. Together and the Lord is
- 1:59establishing this Kingdom by his Zeal.
- 2:02And so, as we think about that, and we remember that, we
- 2:06remember that the points of our faith is reconciliation and
- 2:11intimacy with the Lord setting aside sin setting aside
- 2:15everything that encumbers us and going after Jesus, as hard as we
- 2:20can. And that is the focal point of
- 2:23our faith. And so this morning, as we take
- 2:26in, and we join these guys, As they're traveling on the road to
- 2:30Emmaus, which is a little town outside of Jerusalem, about
- 2:33seven miles down the road, we're going to find them in a very
- 2:37difficult spot. You see these guys were in a
- 2:40place where they had felt a lot of expectancy for what God might
- 2:46do in their life. They were excited to join him in
- 2:50his ministry, they were excited for the things that he spoke
- 2:54when Jesus was in the room. How are went forth and they
- 2:57watch that. And they began to let that stir
- 3:01within them more and more and more Messianic expectation.
- 3:06They were excited for what he might do if for a few different
- 3:09reasons one, he would be prophetic fulfillment.
- 3:13That the prophets had talked about for centuries, but on the
- 3:16other hand, what would also happen in a very patriotic
- 3:19political sense, for these guys was, they lived in an occupied
- 3:23country. They were not in control and in
- 3:28complete or total way of their lives.
- 3:31The Romans over saw what happened?
- 3:33And so they were waiting for this King to come to rise up to
- 3:38overthrow the Roman government, and that they would have their
- 3:41freedom and that they would be able to walk and move in the
- 3:45ways that they had only dreamed of.
- 3:47And so they had a certain kind of desperation, that drove them
- 3:52and Jesus likes. Raishin, Matthew 5:6, The Sermon
- 3:58on the Mount. It says, blessed are those who
- 4:01hunger and thirst for righteousness?
- 4:04And the blessing is, if they do this, they will be filled.
- 4:09It's a promise, they will be filled.
- 4:12So these guys, they take Jesus at his word there, his
- 4:14disciples, and they want to walk with him.
- 4:17They want to be around him. When he is doing things, they
- 4:20want to be near. Just the little everyday things,
- 4:24the big things, Things, whatever, it doesn't matter.
- 4:26I just want to be by him. I just want to be in the room
- 4:29with him and so as they have this excitement and and Jesus
- 4:34has come and he has left the throne room of heaven and Jesus
- 4:37has chosen to come and to be born into poverty to be born and
- 4:42to live in a Backwater town of Nazareth and to come up learning
- 4:48a trade of carpentry. And then Jesus would begin a
- 4:51Ministry where some people loved him.
- 4:52Some people exploited him Some people hated him.
- 4:56They didn't respect the Throne of Heaven, they didn't respect
- 5:00his kingship. And so Jesus, put himself
- 5:04through that. He was betrayed.
- 5:06He was murdered violently and that's where we find these guys
- 5:10is these guys followed after the Lord with a lot of desperation.
- 5:14And now, everything has come to a screeching halt They murdered
- 5:20Jesus. Now, what what are we supposed
- 5:27to do? Where do we go?
- 5:31We definitely did not see this coming.
- 5:34This is something that is horrific.
- 5:37It's traumatizing and a lot of ways for these guys.
- 5:41And so they're on this road and they are beginning to discuss
- 5:45what's going on in. Sometimes this morning, I want
- 5:49to encourage you that if you're in a similar place where you're
- 5:53feeling despair, For whatever reason, even though the holidays
- 5:56are a time where you're supposed to, in our minds, be happy,
- 6:00sometimes we pretend or whatever.
- 6:02I want to encourage you just to be honest with the Lord, these
- 6:06guys had some very real questions and some very real
- 6:09concerns about what was going to be next.
- 6:13They wanted the kind of power that Jesus offered, they wanted
- 6:17the kind of Hope and Faith and love that they saw in Jesus eyes
- 6:22when they were with him and now that he was gone, Who knows in
- 6:28their mind? And it's very important.
- 6:31I think for us may be a helpful illustration is this idea of a
- 6:34lightning rod, right? And so lightning rods are set up
- 6:38to handle power, right? Lightning strikes.
- 6:42It they hit it and it goes to the bottom and it disperses
- 6:46because it's grounded when you're not grounded and you try
- 6:50to handle power, it's bad, it explodes.
- 6:55It causes a mess, it can destroy things.
- 6:58And so these guys, Eyes, and their context.
- 7:02And in verse 13, they're beginning to try to make sense
- 7:06of the power that they saw was happening in verses where they
- 7:10are now. And so, it says, Now Behold, two
- 7:14of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus,
- 7:18which was seven miles from Jerusalem, and they talked
- 7:22together of all these things which had happened.
- 7:26And so was that while they conversed and reason, That Jesus
- 7:30himself Drew near and he went along with them.
- 7:37It's interesting. These guys, we will learn as we
- 7:41go through the passage had heard, that Jesus was gone.
- 7:46He was killed. They put his body in a tomb.
- 7:49Some women who were also disciples with them, had gone
- 7:53along to the tomb and the stone was rolled away.
- 7:56And Jesus body was gone. And so you would think that
- 8:02these guys would give any kind of a glimmer of hope that maybe
- 8:07Jesus was who he said he was. But what happens when you're in
- 8:11fear, when you're in anxiety or despair is you don't think
- 8:17rationally, you're not remembering things.
- 8:21You're so enveloped and what you're feeling and what's going
- 8:25on at this moment. And so, these guys are trying to
- 8:28trying to sort it out and there was Walking, this lonely road
- 8:32and they had to learn a lesson because in this moment, they
- 8:36were unhappy with God. They were unhappy that God did
- 8:42not do things in the way that they expected, and because he
- 8:45didn't do things the way that they expected, they were left in
- 8:50a Lurch in their mind. But these guys had to understand
- 8:54and they had to learn how to follow and not try to lead what
- 8:59God was doing. They had to understand that they
- 9:01needed to wait on him. If you're taking notes this
- 9:05morning, the first point that I would have you consider Is we
- 9:10cannot walk in power until we learn how to walk and
- 9:14submission. These guys wanted to be way out
- 9:18ahead of Jesus. They wanted to take his power.
- 9:21They wanted it to play out in the way that they were thinking
- 9:24and they had to learn instead to submit to what the Lord had for
- 9:28them. So that way when the power came
- 9:31at Pentecost, they would have the right perspective and using
- 9:35that power. And a lot of times we think in
- 9:38terms of Jesus, you order our daily walk, you take care of
- 9:43things, which is true and it says George me.
- 9:46Euler sorry, the Great British evangelist, he said God orders
- 9:52our steps but he also orders are stops.
- 9:57God doesn't just take us forward.
- 9:59Sometimes God makes us pause. We need to wait upon him.
- 10:06And waiting is hard. Waiting is difficult.
- 10:09It's not something that we particularly saver or enjoy.
- 10:14We may enjoy it more. If we're in a season of waiting
- 10:16that we have appointed or we're comfortable, we feel good about
- 10:20things. It is not comfortable to wait in
- 10:23a season of pain. It's very, very hard to just sit
- 10:28and wait on the Lord to move in a way that we don't expect to,
- 10:32we don't see. And so Jesus knows what's going
- 10:35on. He understands he's Drawing Near
- 10:38as he draws near, he's listening to them reason and they're
- 10:41trying logically and the very natural order of things to come
- 10:45up with any kind of like a grid to somehow plot out.
- 10:50What has happened to them? What on Earth could be going on?
- 10:54And so, as they We wonder what they're talking about and in
- 10:58verse 21 it'll go on and give us a clue.
- 11:01But we know that at least some of the things that happened was
- 11:04they didn't believe that Jesus said had risen or was maybe who
- 11:08he said he was because they were really wrestling.
- 11:10In this moment fear had hijacked their perspective and so they're
- 11:16struggling through these things and we don't know what they
- 11:18said, but maybe they felt bad for the women who showed up at
- 11:22the tomb. Like, man, they just come
- 11:25Formation bias. The seen the things that they
- 11:27want to see, you know, it's kind of kind of sad.
- 11:31I wish he was alive, you know? And, and I love Jesus, too.
- 11:34And maybe they just can't accept the reality of the natural order
- 11:38of things, people, live and people die.
- 11:42But you see what was happening? Was Jesus wasn't doing anything
- 11:45natural, he was doing something Supernatural it, required
- 11:49different Vision to trust the Lord in this season, where these
- 11:52guys were. So as their reasoning, its Says
- 11:56in verse 16 or sorry at the end of 15 says.
- 11:59While they conversed in reason that Jesus himself Drew near and
- 12:04went with them but their eyes were restrained so that they did
- 12:09not know him. Mark chapter 16 verse 12, it
- 12:13says that he appeared to them in a form that they did not
- 12:15recognize, you see even in the middle of their pain and their
- 12:20struggling. Jesus was there Even when they
- 12:25didn't recognize how he was present, or what it is that he
- 12:29had for them. It didn't make it any less.
- 12:32True. That Jesus was there among them?
- 12:36So Jesus comes to them and he's walking with them.
- 12:39And you think about how interesting this is that Jesus
- 12:43knows what's going on, and Jesus doesn't avoid them.
- 12:46He doesn't think I'm going to hop to some people who are in a
- 12:49better mood or who have more faith or in a better place but
- 12:53Jesus chooses to stop with these men.
- 12:57On this road outside of Jerusalem and we don't know why
- 12:59they left Jerusalem. It had been three days, maybe
- 13:02they were so discouraged because the women had told them that and
- 13:06they just couldn't believe it that they needed to get out of
- 13:09town. I don't know why.
- 13:12But for whatever reason, these guys were headed down the road
- 13:14and Jesus draws near to them in the middle of their despair.
- 13:20And so as he comes to them in verse 17, it says he said to
- 13:25them, what kind of conversation is this that you have with one
- 13:29another as you walk and are sad. Then one of those whose name was
- 13:35cleopas answered and said to him, are you the only Stranger
- 13:40in Jerusalem and have you not known the things which had
- 13:43happened in these days and in verse 19, it says, and he said
- 13:49to them, What things? Jesus wasn't confused about why
- 13:54these guys were struggling, Jesus didn't approach them
- 13:57because they were in a good place, Jesus approached them
- 14:00because he loves them. Jesus, approached them in
- 14:04tenderness and in compassion, because these guys were wounded,
- 14:09if you could look with spiritual eyes at these guys heart, these
- 14:14guys hopes and their minds, you would see deep gashes, Deep
- 14:19wounding upon them in. Jesus doesn't push them out.
- 14:24He doesn't push them away. He doesn't move past them.
- 14:28He doesn't skip them because they're wrestling.
- 14:31Jesus draws near to them. If you're taking notes, I want
- 14:37to encourage you to write down this thought.
- 14:40Fear can't be a substitute for the goodness of God in your
- 14:45life. You know, sometimes we get into
- 14:48Seasons that we don't understand Seasons that we dislike
- 14:52significantly and we began to try and work things out or sell
- 14:57for we begin to Panic or we have anxieties and we kind of find
- 15:02ourselves obsessing about how we think things are going clearly.
- 15:08Jesus is alive. He's with them, they don't see
- 15:11that. And so from their perspective,
- 15:15fear is all there is And it's imitation is to lean into this
- 15:19fear and let it engulf them. So as they're, they're working
- 15:24through this, they're fighting through this.
- 15:26Fear can make you, do some really weird things but praise
- 15:30God, that he is not given us a spirit of fear.
- 15:34A man is given us a spirit of power.
- 15:37A spirit of love and he's given us a sound mind.
- 15:41And so the church in times where we're facing great tasks we're
- 15:46facing. What things we cannot reach out
- 15:48for fear because they will be nothing there.
- 15:52It's intimidation, it's an illusion.
- 15:56It's a process that we go through, in our minds of looking
- 15:59forward. But removing Hope from the
- 16:03equation, these guys had vision and their Vision was bad.
- 16:08It was not pretty what they thought was happening here.
- 16:12There was a prominent Pastor who shade that in a more succinctly.
- 16:15And he just said, you know, fear here is the gift of Vision
- 16:18Without hope. It's looking forward to the
- 16:22things that you think will play out in a certain way and you
- 16:25begin to suck and remove anything good, anything that
- 16:30looks like the graciousness and goodness of God out of that
- 16:33equation until what you're left with is somewhere.
- 16:36You don't want to be but you're not sure how to get out of it.
- 16:42and so, if you're in that place this morning and I want to
- 16:45encourage, you don't be afraid Jesus is near.
- 16:52Don't run away from the processes that God has set in
- 16:56Motion in your life. The things that he has set for
- 17:00you to walk in from before you were born.
- 17:03Let it play out. Trust the father, you see, all
- 17:08the prophecy didn't go by the wayside, all the power, the
- 17:12kingdom, the might of the king of glory, the one who is there
- 17:16in creation, the one who oversaw everything?
- 17:20It didn't pass away didn't crumble because some religious
- 17:26leaders didn't like it and decided to poison him.
- 17:30And go after him by poisoning, the minds of one of his
- 17:34followers. Who would betray him What?
- 17:38We get so crazy and so bound up in the natural order of things.
- 17:42We forget how big our God is. We forget how strong he is.
- 17:47You forget what he pulled you from, and he is not in a
- 17:51position of weakness or knowing. Defeat this morning.
- 17:55God doesn't know fear, he doesn't feel it.
- 17:58God is not concerned about what's going to happen.
- 18:02God is Not shaky and his confidence of his identity.
- 18:06God doesn't stay up at night. With ulcers wondering how things
- 18:10are going to play out. That is not the God, we serve
- 18:14the God, we serve is the commander of the armies of
- 18:17Heaven at Creation in Genesis, when he spoke everything into
- 18:22being literally all matter, formed and bent around his
- 18:28words. That is your king this morning.
- 18:33So as we look at this, we have to remember that the deepest
- 18:36kinds of Faith often emerge from the most strenuous and difficult
- 18:41circumstances. And if you find yourself there
- 18:44this morning, where you don't know what, the next step will
- 18:47be, let God take it for you, do not surrender it.
- 18:53So, we read on and verse 19. Jesus is asking them what things
- 18:57not because he doesn't know, he wants them to talk, he's getting
- 19:02them. To open up.
- 19:03Jesus is inviting them to share their pain from our perspective.
- 19:08How awkward, right. We're complaining about Jesus to
- 19:13Jesus because we don't like how Jesus is doing things, right?
- 19:17So from our perspective, like it's a cringe-worthy moments,
- 19:20but from this perspective, Jesus is the only one who has full
- 19:25access and knowledge here and he is drawing them out.
- 19:29He is inviting their concerns. He is inviting them to have very
- 19:34real and honest conversations with him.
- 19:37Jesus likes it when you're wrong with him.
- 19:41Jesus invites it it's okay. It is okay.
- 19:46You know, it's a good reminder for us is Jesus.
- 19:48Does these things that we don't need to be afraid of people when
- 19:53they are in despair struggling. We don't need to give people
- 19:58cliches. We don't need to try and Patch
- 20:01it up or put a bandaid on it. Jesus isn't a Band-Aid and
- 20:05Jesus, doesn't heal halfway. Jesus heals fully and completely
- 20:10with the authority of heaven. And so when we meet people that
- 20:14are in these positions, it's important for us to remember
- 20:18that we need to be concerned for helping them progress in their
- 20:21walk. Helping them move forward.
- 20:23We need to disciple them in a way that invites them and
- 20:26encourages them to take the next step, we never shame.
- 20:31Jesus didn't shame Jesus, engage them.
- 20:34And so the reminds me of a quote by the founder of the vineyard
- 20:38movement, his name was John Wimber and he said when raising
- 20:42the bar becomes more important than helping people over it,
- 20:47we've missed the call of the Kingdom.
- 20:50When we are more concerned about making things difficult, and
- 20:54making people behave a certain way.
- 20:57Then seeing them, transformed, we've missed it, you missed it.
- 21:02Our messes are no threat to Jesus Majesty.
- 21:06He's not afraid of what we're going to say.
- 21:08He already knows. He's inviting them to lean on
- 21:11him to rest on him because it is the only support that will.
- 21:15Last it is the only sure thing that they will be able to put
- 21:19their weight in there. Hope into.
- 21:22And so they begin this process of unloading their hearts to
- 21:26Jesus and says, so they said to him, well, the things concerning
- 21:30Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, Mighty in deed and word
- 21:35before God, and all the people, and how the chief priests and
- 21:39our rulers, delivered him to be condemned to death and crucified
- 21:44him. Can you pick up on the tone of
- 21:47their voice? Can you pick up on the things
- 21:50that they're focused on right there?
- 21:53Giants. Are consuming their entire field
- 21:56of vision. Their entire scope has been
- 21:59consumed with the things that have gone.
- 22:02Like, they weren't expecting and how bitter they are about that.
- 22:07In verse 21, we get a little bit of crushing insight into where
- 22:11these guys are, but it's important to recognize that
- 22:14Jesus allows them to Continue. It says.
- 22:19What we were hoping. But we were hoping.
- 22:28You get what he's saying? They had hoped that God would
- 22:32come through. And hoped that God would do
- 22:35something. They'd hoped that he would see
- 22:37me drowning. He would see me struggling, he
- 22:41would see my depression. He would see the addiction that
- 22:44I wrestle with her. How hard I'm trying to just
- 22:47can't get it, right? We were hoping that he was this
- 22:53person, right? We were hoping that it was, he
- 22:56who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed.
- 22:59Besides all this today is the third day, since these things
- 23:03that Happened. So it's fresh on their mind for
- 23:05them. It was this morning when they
- 23:08thought, Jesus body had been taken for them.
- 23:12They're living in a very real personal torment.
- 23:17It says in verse 22. Yes in a certain women of our
- 23:22company who arrived at the tomb early astonished us.
- 23:25When they did not find his body they came saying that they had
- 23:29also seen a vision of angels who said he was alive and certain of
- 23:34those who were with him. Sorry who were with us went to
- 23:39the tomb and found it just as the women had said catch on to
- 23:43this part though but him they did not.
- 23:46See, Jesus wants to say something at this moment.
- 23:52He's listened, he understands where they're coming from, he's
- 23:56heard their concerns, but he is not about to let fear and doubt
- 24:01dominate the topic of conversation.
- 24:04He is not going to let the enemy who thought he'd just won a
- 24:07great Victory and crushing the church before it got started.
- 24:12He's not going to let it take root here.
- 24:14And Jesus is going to say something.
- 24:16And he's going to address what's happening.
- 24:19So in verse 25, it says then he said to them o foolish ones and
- 24:24slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken
- 24:29ought, not the Christ to have suffered these things and to
- 24:32enter into his glory and beginning at Moses and all the
- 24:36prophets, he expounded to them and all the scriptures and the
- 24:40things concerning him. Now, what's really interesting
- 24:44about this is Jesus understands that to push back he needs to
- 24:47ground them. Again, ground them in the word
- 24:50ground them. In what they know to be true,
- 24:53these guys are living in a hurricane of emotions.
- 24:55There's a lot of swirl that's going on in their life and so
- 24:59Jesus has to fix their feet, he has to Anchor them and so he
- 25:04begins by saying, like guys here's the thing, verse 26.
- 25:12You knew that the Christ had to suffer so that God's glory could
- 25:16go forward. And then what he does is he
- 25:19opens it up to them. He doesn't leave them with a
- 25:22quick gentle rebuke, he takes them into scripture, he draws
- 25:26them deeper. Jesus is always drawing you
- 25:30deeper. So he begins to open up the
- 25:32scriptures. And as he's expounding, he's
- 25:35explaining about himself to these guys, and as Jesus is
- 25:40speaking, When you can feel in the scripture in the passage,
- 25:45something is happening. They're starting to shed some
- 25:52fear. I vaguely.
- 25:54Remember, yeah. Jesus said something like that.
- 25:57Well, yeah, there's a lot of Prophecy written on this.
- 26:00Oh, yes. The Lord has established his
- 26:02word. And so, what's happening is the
- 26:05heart that had stopped because of everything.
- 26:08They had experienced begins to pump a little bit.
- 26:14Feeling something Jesus is not taking out a smoldering Wick,
- 26:21he's not breaking off a bruised Reed.
- 26:24He's meeting these guys where they are and pushing back
- 26:28because he's allowing their faith to be revived to be
- 26:32restored. The words Jesus speaks is not to
- 26:36abuse authority to shame them. Some of us grew up in homes,
- 26:40maybe where we felt shame. Where Authority was used in
- 26:44inappropriate ways and it's hard to not transfer what we have
- 26:50experienced into other positions of authority.
- 26:53But that is not how Jesus deals with things.
- 26:57And so as this is going on, Jesus in a very real way, is
- 27:01dismantling the stronghold that the enemy has begun to build in
- 27:05their life, in their thought, process in their View and it's
- 27:09important that Jesus does this by establishing, what is It out
- 27:14supernaturally, right? Because this is a living.
- 27:18Look. As you read the Scripture, it
- 27:22reads you wherever you are in your journey.
- 27:26God has a word for you. He has not abandoned you.
- 27:30He has not forgotten about you and he has not left your side.
- 27:35He will never leave you or forsake you.
- 27:38And so as he's speaking this and he's pushing back these guys,
- 27:43they're starting to get excited. They're starting to think.
- 27:47Well, maybe God is doing something bigger than I knew.
- 27:51Maybe there is something grander going on here verse 28.
- 27:56It says, then they drew near to the village where they were
- 27:58going and he indicated that he would have gone farther but they
- 28:04constrain him. Him saying abide with us for it
- 28:07is toward the evening and the day is far spent and he went in
- 28:12to stay with him. I hope you notice What's
- 28:15Happening Here. Jesus is Dashing the hopes of
- 28:20hell The hopes that they would come to subtly believe in the
- 28:26enemy hijacking, God's plan subtly focusing on the power of
- 28:32the enemy instead of the power of the Lord.
- 28:34And Jesus is dismantling that and as this is happening,
- 28:38something very important is happening.
- 28:40They don't want him to leave, Jesus is going to be moving on.
- 28:45It looks like and they don't know that it's Jesus, but they
- 28:48know the faith in the presence of God.
- 28:52And it is a hook for them and so they they were restrained in
- 28:57their Vision before they couldn't see who he was.
- 29:00But now it's then he was doing the constraining.
- 29:04Don't leave us. Stay.
- 29:06Jesus stay with us. Like they don't understand that.
- 29:10It's Jesus once again but they understand the presence and the
- 29:14life. That's on the word of God.
- 29:17In John chapter 6, when Jesus is addressing a certain situation,
- 29:22he says, the words that I speak to you are both spirit and life.
- 29:28They are both truth and their presence.
- 29:33The presence of God rests within his words because Jesus is the
- 29:38Living Word. So as he is speaking, these
- 29:41things, as they're beginning to take On Heavens perspective, say
- 29:46Jesus, Don't go just just be with us a little bit longer and
- 29:52so he goes in with them in verse 30 says now it came to pass as
- 29:57you said at the table with them and he took bread blessed and
- 30:01broke it and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and
- 30:06they knew him and he vanished from their sight.
- 30:12What just happened? Jesus, he came in, he had dinner
- 30:18with them. They broke bread.
- 30:19They ate together and all of a sudden, they shifted fields of
- 30:23vision their natural order, came colliding and smashing down.
- 30:29Underneath the supernatural reign of God.
- 30:32The order of God, he was doing something bigger, and not just
- 30:36something good, and not just something that we were happy
- 30:38about this blew away. A thing that we thought he might
- 30:42be up to and their eyes were opened in a second and they
- 30:46realized just exactly what had happened who they were pouring,
- 30:50their hearts out to how tender how compassionate he had been
- 30:54with them. And they begin to understand
- 30:57that the way that God lays things out are solid.
- 31:02You can put weight into it, you can trust it just like in the
- 31:06natural order of things you have taking, for example.
- 31:11The law of gravity and you'll meet somebody along the way.
- 31:15And I say, well, I don't care about your gravity, it's like,
- 31:18well, I don't really care that you don't care much for Gravity,
- 31:21because it is what it is. You jump off that thing and
- 31:25you're going to fall, it is what it is because it's just the way
- 31:28things function, you can like it, you cannot like it, but it
- 31:32is how things are laid out. And so in the spiritual realm,
- 31:36there's a similar Dynamic here, there's a principle that's
- 31:39happening as when Jesus Lays out what he's going to do, who he
- 31:44is, and what he can do with in your life.
- 31:48Those principles are ever steady.
- 31:52They're not rocked, right? And so, you might not like who
- 31:55Jesus says, you might not like how Jesus has done things.
- 31:59It is nothing against the power of God, right?
- 32:05If they can't stand against the power of what Jesus is doing.
- 32:09And so as he's doing this is They're becoming Quicken.
- 32:12They're becoming awakened. We remember John 1:14 and it
- 32:18reads like this and says, and the word became flesh and dwelt
- 32:23among us and we beheld, his glory, the glory, as of the only
- 32:29begotten of the father, full of grace and truth.
- 32:33The word that says, Jesus dwelt Among Us.
- 32:36The original idea is that he tabernacled The idea is that
- 32:42when he left heaven and he came, he didn't leave it because he
- 32:46thought Humanity was so much farther along.
- 32:49He thought you were going to be such a better disciple than you
- 32:52are. He's not confused about that.
- 32:55He tabernacled, the idea is that he literally pitched his tent
- 32:59among Humanity. He chose it.
- 33:05Because he loves you. Not because he thinks that
- 33:08you're somebody else. Not because he has Illusions
- 33:12about the things that are going on in your mind right now.
- 33:16Or the shadows of your heart of the recesses of your quiet
- 33:20times. Jesus knows and he's here and
- 33:25he's ready to do something. And so in this word in the flash
- 33:29is speaking God's touching their hearts, it's an important
- 33:33reminder for us to remember that, we don't need to Market
- 33:37Jesus, to people, we simply introduce him.
- 33:41Jesus speaks for himself when you have an encounter with Jesus
- 33:45and you have an Embrace of Heaven, it changes everything.
- 33:50We don't have to try and convince people or Market,
- 33:53Jesus, in some way or try to get anything that would, that would
- 33:58make Jesus more attractive, because he's simply already is
- 34:02you just need to meet him and he's much grander than anything
- 34:05that you could have imagined, and God is quite content with
- 34:09offending your understanding. Of him, if it helps you to
- 34:15understand him in a real way. Does that make sense?
- 34:18Sometimes we look at Jesus as we are instead of as he is.
- 34:22And so the perspective that we have is coming from us instead
- 34:27of coming from him, these guys are having this this this
- 34:32reality check and all of a sudden their understanding that
- 34:35the expectations that they had originally are partially true
- 34:40but they're actually even better and fear.
- 34:42Panic anxiety. That's not even on the radar
- 34:45anymore because Jesus has just left, but he has left them with
- 34:49hope and with life. And so it carries on here in
- 34:53verse 32 and they turn to each other.
- 34:57Now it's just the two of them and it says did not our hearts
- 35:03burn within us while he talked with us on the road, while he
- 35:10opened up the Sirs to us, if you're taking notes, I want you
- 35:17to consider this thought the word of Jesus candles, even the
- 35:22weakest of face when Jesus word goes forward in power and it
- 35:27goes forward. Unrestrained, what happens is a
- 35:30lot like what? The British evangelist Charles
- 35:33Spurgeon shared. He said the word of God has the
- 35:37power to awaken the conscience and vibrate the soul.
- 35:42These guys everything that was on them was coming off because
- 35:47they were resonating with who Jesus was with what he wanted to
- 35:52do. All of a sudden, their
- 35:53perspective faded to Heavens perspective and they began to
- 35:58understand the gift that they had been given.
- 36:00That death had been crushed that the strongholds had been shaken
- 36:05and depleted, and that Jesus alone remained Supreme So I want
- 36:12you to consider right now, what is it that Jesus might be
- 36:16speaking to you this morning? You see if we just read
- 36:22scripture and we understand that and we become good bereans, it
- 36:27doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to change us.
- 36:32If you read scripture and your glass over it and you read it
- 36:35without it affecting your behavior, you read, it
- 36:40fruitlessly. This Demands a response.
- 36:47What Jesus is doing on the Earth today as the enemy would try to
- 36:52intimidate and instill fear and get the church to back down, get
- 36:56the church to hide get the church to lash out because of
- 37:00whatever the weirdness is. That's not Jesus.
- 37:04And Jesus is not lacking confidence in his plan, a man.
- 37:09And so, in verse 33, they rose up there.
- 37:12Mobilize this very hour right away, they get up here.
- 37:17Spanish. They have this quick
- 37:18conversation and then says, they want the seven miles back to
- 37:22Jerusalem. They hooked it.
- 37:24They hold it. They weren't, they have to go.
- 37:28And so it says that that very hour, they returned to Jerusalem
- 37:32and found the 11, those who were with them gathered together
- 37:36saying the Lord is risen, indeed and has appeared to Simon.
- 37:42And they told about the things that had happened on the road
- 37:45and how he was known to them. Them in the breaking of the
- 37:48bread. Their testimony comes forth, it
- 37:54Roars, fourth. It's like Jesus said, Jess,
- 37:57loose their mouth. They had to speak about it.
- 38:01They had to get it out. They had to share it.
- 38:03They had to build up the body. People had to know who Jesus
- 38:07was. They had to know what Jesus was
- 38:10doing. They had to be a part of it.
- 38:12Jesus is Alive. The King has come.
- 38:17He wasn't defeated Satan, doesn't have more power than you
- 38:20think. Think that God does in your
- 38:23life. God reigns Supreme You know,
- 38:28back to that conversation in John chapter 6.
- 38:31Jesus is speaking with his disciples and he's saying, you
- 38:34know, you're going to be eating my flesh and drinking my blood.
- 38:41And some of the ones who were with him, heard it and we're
- 38:44like, this is crazy. This is weird weird weird and so
- 38:49they left. He just left Jesus, excuse
- 38:53themselves, walked away, and they were gone.
- 38:58And what's interesting is in that moment, Jesus asks them his
- 39:03disciples, are you going to go away, too?
- 39:07Will you leave me? Because you don't understand
- 39:11what I'm doing. Are you going to abandon me?
- 39:16Is that the value of our friendship?
- 39:20The value of our faith things? Things are hard, you don't
- 39:23understand. And you just bail And Peter
- 39:26speaks up and he says, here's the thing.
- 39:29Jesus, where else could we go? You alone, hold the words of
- 39:35life. And that was the same.
- 39:38Then as it is this morning in your circumstance, there is
- 39:43nowhere to retreat to we rest on God.
- 39:47We cannot lean on our own understanding.
- 39:50Our vision is bad. We know that we understand and
- 39:53we see only in part one day we'll know fully but until that
- 39:57time comes we lean into God. And it's Jesus spoke in their
- 40:03heart burn within them. It was like Jesus shout out
- 40:06strings into them and these strings had Hooks and they
- 40:10attach their minds the way that they process the way that they
- 40:15consider things, they shot out and an attached to their hearts.
- 40:19The way that they felt the way that they were progressing and
- 40:24experiencing what was happening and it shot out to their will
- 40:30and Jesus challenge them not to give up just because their
- 40:35Vision was bad. And so we see in John chapter 1
- 40:41and tells us that Jesus, who is the Living Word was there at the
- 40:45beginning, Colossians chapter 1, verses 13 through 17.
- 40:49Say he has delivered us from the domain of darkness and he has
- 40:54transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son.
- 40:58In whom we have Redemption, the Forgiveness of sins.
- 41:01Speaking of Jesus, he is the very image of the invisible.
- 41:06God, The firstborn of all creation for by him, all things
- 41:12were created in heaven and on Earth, the visible and the
- 41:18invisible. And it says, whether Thrones or
- 41:22dominions or rulers or authorities, all things were
- 41:25created through him and for him, and he is before, all things.
- 41:33And in him all things, hold together.
- 41:37Are you afraid this morning of what's playing out in your life?
- 41:40I would challenge you that Jesus is orchestrating all of
- 41:47creation. Everything that is lay down the
- 41:51breath that you are breathing. As you are hyperventilating,
- 41:54breath was given to you for another purpose to share your
- 41:58testimony from Jesus everything that we believe.
- 42:03And that we see and that we know and don't know.
- 42:07It's because God spoke his word into creation like we said,
- 42:12creation, bent around it and that is what we have today.
- 42:17Hebrews chapter 1, it says that he upholds, all things.
- 42:21Some translations say that he upholds the universe by the
- 42:25power of His word. He upholds your Universe from
- 42:29moment to moment. How big is your god today?
- 42:34Is the god that you're following intimidated by the things that
- 42:38you wrestle with. I don't think so, and that's not
- 42:43to make you feel bad. That's to invite you to the
- 42:46feast, the Feast of Faith. That's to invite you to the
- 42:50things that Jesus has for you. That are so much better so much
- 42:54grander, so much more than even what you think is happening.
- 42:58And you might think some good things are happening.
- 43:01And I promise you, it's way more because Jesus didn't merely
- 43:05speak, God's word. He is God's word.
- 43:10He is Both truth and presence. And when Jesus is in a
- 43:14situation, everything else will submit everything else will
- 43:20fade. It might not happen in the way
- 43:22that you want it to happen. It may not play out in the
- 43:25direction or the timing that you thought it was, but you can be
- 43:28assured that God does not know what it looks like to fail.
- 43:32He's never taken a loss. He doesn't understand what
- 43:36that's like for in a very real sense from personal experience
- 43:40because cuz it's never happened and it didn't happen then and it
- 43:44won't happen. Now it's important to recognize
- 43:48that where the kingdom manifested where Jesus came to
- 43:51them, was to two guys who were broken.
- 43:58The kingdom is at home among Brokenness.
- 44:02Jesus seeks out Brokenness. Not because he wants to gawk at
- 44:08the situation, but because he wants to turn it upside down.
- 44:13God takes Delight in rescuing, and then God takes those who are
- 44:18rescued and he makes them Rescuers.
- 44:21He sends them out to fill that position for other places.
- 44:27God has not moved by your Merit because his disciples were so
- 44:31great. And what they were doing, God is
- 44:33moved by his Mercy. He loves his son, he sees
- 44:39Humanity has a great void, and God is very happy to fill it if
- 44:45you will allow him to. So I want to invite the worship
- 44:49team to come back out. And I want us to just consider
- 44:54as we're winding up. That Jesus is undefeated.
- 45:02He's undefeated. He is a king that we will never
- 45:05ever ever have to worry about experiencing being let down.
- 45:11His guys were terrified of it that they had misplaced their
- 45:14hope in Jesus addressed it and he put that myth to bed.
- 45:21If you're here this morning and you need a touch from the
- 45:24master, don't hide from him. Here's the deal.
- 45:30God cannot heal. What he cannot touch and so it
- 45:36is on you to decide if you're going to allow him to come and
- 45:41tenderness and compassion to those places.
- 45:44And it's not on you in a bad way but it's a very clear and
- 45:49comforting invitation for you to be drawn into his Embrace drawn
- 45:55into the perspective that he has for you.
- 46:01Maybe you're here this morning and you're just battling some
- 46:05things. Maybe you're here.
- 46:07The season is just overwhelming. You you distracted?
- 46:12Finding it hard to wait on the Lord to just settle for his
- 46:16word. Maybe you just need to take a
- 46:20minute and just sit. That's okay.
- 46:24Jesus will sit with you. Maybe you're here this morning
- 46:28and you're wrestling with your life to the point of where
- 46:32you're not sure you want to continue feeling the pain that
- 46:35you're feeling and I would tell you that, that comes from the
- 46:40depths of hell. The enemy is lying to you.
- 46:45The enemy wants to make you believe that there is no hope
- 46:47and there's no way out and that's not true.
- 46:50Jesus is happy to meet you where you are many people have great
- 46:56Theology and they know a lot about Jesus and they don't spend
- 47:00any time with him. Don't be that guy.
- 47:05Don't be that lady. Don't miss it, don't miss the
- 47:08authority of Heaven. That is in the room right now is
- 47:12God's spirit, ministers and fans out in this room.
- 47:18Let Jesus touch you. Let Jesus hit on the things that
- 47:23are bugging you as I'm talking. You can trust him with it.
- 47:29He's not going to shame. You is not going to push you
- 47:31away. He's going to walk with you.
- 47:35He's going to love you. And he's going to heal you.
- 47:42I'll leave you with Ecclesiastes chapter 8, verse 4 when it's
- 47:46talking about kingdoms and says where the word of a king is
- 47:50there is power and who can say to him, what are you doing?
- 47:57There was a king in the room right now.
- 48:01He's not intimidated. Let him have his way.
- 48:07So, if you're here this morning and I want to make you
- 48:10uncomfortable, we've all been there.
- 48:12I personally have wrestled with anxiety at a very deep level,
- 48:17but I want to ask you, would you stand so that we can pray with
- 48:21you? If you're wrestling with letting
- 48:25the Lord, touch some areas that you've hidden away, just let him
- 48:29have it. Just give it up, what's so great
- 48:32about it that you want to hold onto it just be done with it,
- 48:36put it away. see if you've you guys someone in the back over
- 48:45here, here's what I want to do. If you're around somebody who's
- 48:52standing, would you stand up next to them and put your hand
- 48:56on them? We want to minister to them.
- 49:02We know that the spirit of God is within his church is within
- 49:06those who believe. And the scripture tells us that
- 49:10the same spirit, is there who raised Christ from the dead is?
- 49:15Resurrection power in what Jesus does, and if your life is coming
- 49:19apart, let me encourage you, it's no harder for God to
- 49:21recreate your life, then it was for him to form it in the first
- 49:24place. So let him have it.
- 49:28If you hate this morning, you don't know Jesus you know really
- 49:31understand who I'm talking about, but it's attractive and
- 49:35you want to know him all that you need to know is that he was
- 49:40crushed. He lost his life for you because
- 49:43he was God In the Flesh who did that, so that he could be the
- 49:47ultimate sacrifice for all the sin in your life that is hurting
- 49:53you. It's bogging you down,
- 49:56strangling you. You and Jesus has authority over
- 50:00that and he would have authority over your life if you will, give
- 50:03it to him. And we plead the blood of Jesus
- 50:06and we call on the blood of Jesus.
- 50:08And we asked him to come and minister to you.
- 50:11And all you have to do is pray a prayer similar to what I will,
- 50:14what I will lead you in, It's not nothing magical about the
- 50:18words. It's what's happening in your
- 50:19heart. But it's a Jesus.
- 50:22I Need You. Jesus ask that you would take my
- 50:27sin, take the filth, but take the Brokenness in my life.
- 50:33And would you clean me? Would you forgive me for that?
- 50:38I believe that you are God. I believe that you did these
- 50:41things, you were killed, you were the sacrifice but you also
- 50:45rose from the dead and you stand Mighty and Eternity on my behalf
- 50:51and ask that you would take my life.
- 50:57Holy Spirit. For those who are in the room
- 50:59who are experiencing pain for various reasons, experiencing
- 51:05confusion struggling with core things about who they are and
- 51:11how they live. We ask that you would counsel
- 51:14them. We know that you are the
- 51:15counselor we know that you bring us into all truth.
- 51:19We know that you were the comforter so we plead the blood
- 51:23of Jesus and we ask Lord that you would bring total and
- 51:26complete healing in these areas. And it may not happen in one
- 51:31moment, but we trust you to do the things that you can do.
- 51:36We love you, Lord. We love you and we agree with
- 51:41how you feel about those who are standing in the need of prayer
- 51:44and we agree with what you think about them.
- 51:46Jesus, we ask that you would have your way.
- 51:52Even the things that it's too hard for us, you say, we can
- 51:54bring it to you because it's easy for you.
- 51:58So we ask that you would have your way this morning.
