- 0:11Speaker 1: I am a sensitive artist. I am a sensitive artist.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I am a sensitive artist. That's what this episode is about?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Funding?
- 0:27Speaker 3: I think that's what, I mean, being not just myself,
- 0:31Speaker 3: but who we are as struggling artists, I think this
- 0:36Speaker 3: is a good time to tell everyone about Patreon.
- 0:39Speaker 2: He has Patreon.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Aren't you yourself a member of the Patreon club? I'm
- 0:45Speaker 3: not just a member.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I'm president.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It's funny.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I really was not wanting to do Patreon for so long.
- 0:54Speaker 2: There's a story why I started doing Patreon, and then
- 0:56Speaker 2: I'll get into what it actually is for you listeners.
- 0:58Speaker 2: So our car needed some serious repairs.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I try to explain to people when I'm saying I'm broke.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I'm not joking.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah, no.
- 1:07Speaker 3: So you understand.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like our van. I need the car to
- 1:11Speaker 2: get to one convention to another. You need that. And
- 1:13Speaker 2: it's like we needed breaks. We needed, I forgot. It
- 1:17Speaker 2: was like $ 1, 700 worth of repairs. And I was like,
- 1:20Speaker 2: I don't know what to do. And I was thinking,
- 1:22Speaker 2: I've seen people do like Indiegogo campaigns for their vacation.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And I'm like, you know, fuck those people.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Vacation? Screw you guys. I'm trying to survive.
- 1:31Speaker 2: And then like somebody said, well, you should do a Patreon,
- 1:33Speaker 2: you know? which is basically you upload content that people
- 1:37Speaker 2: pay to see. It sounds kind of awkward to say
- 1:40Speaker 2: it like that, but like artistic content. It's exclusive content.
- 1:44Speaker 3: It does, and that's kind of why I like ours
- 1:45Speaker 3: to be like, it's the Mountain Club. You join the club,
- 1:48Speaker 3: you get exclusive cool stuff that other people don't get,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and I kind of like making other people like, you know,
- 1:54Speaker 3: I like to penalize people for not supporting us. So
- 1:57Speaker 3: screw you guys. You don't get the cool stuff that
- 1:59Speaker 3: we're about to go into. Exactly. You can't give us
- 2:01Speaker 3: like a couple of bucks.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Like that's it.
- 2:03Speaker 3: That's all we want.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yeah. And that's, yeah. Like for me, like on my
- 2:07Speaker 2: Patreon page, it's like $ 2 a month. You get access
- 2:10Speaker 2: to my newsfeed, which has like time-lapse videos of how
- 2:13Speaker 2: I make things. So people, cause you know, a lot
- 2:16Speaker 2: of people are curious how I, how I make all
- 2:18Speaker 2: the paintings. And well, guess what?
- 2:19Speaker 3: I throw out weird theories at your table, usually in
- 2:22Speaker 3: front of customers.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And sometimes that helps sells, you know, it could be
- 2:25Speaker 2: a total lie.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Oh, most of the time.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 2:28Speaker 3: I still accuse you of just putting them on a
- 2:30Speaker 3: big photocopier machine and it spits out a giant block
- 2:32Speaker 3: of wood.
- 2:33Speaker 2: That's all I do. Yeah, yeah. I just go to FedEx.
- 2:35Speaker 3: It's not just hours and hours and hours of you
- 2:39Speaker 3: doing layers and layers and spray paint and huffing fumes.
- 2:42Speaker 3: You say you use a respirator.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But I... Sometimes I don't.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I'll be honest.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Sometimes I'm just straight up lazy.
- 2:49Speaker 3: And high.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But anyway... But no, it's nice. I've made a little
- 2:53Speaker 2: bit of cash doing it. Not a lot, but The
- 2:55Speaker 2: idea is you eventually build up the audience and they
- 2:58Speaker 2: get to see some cool things. And it's not just
- 3:00Speaker 2: for visual artists. It's also for audio artists or literary artists.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Artists of all kinds. Yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Anybody who creates anything and you get to share whatever
- 3:10Speaker 2: you want with them and they can pay to see it.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah. So the more I figured out how it works, again,
- 3:16Speaker 3: hearing about it on other shows out there, and I'm like, wait,
- 3:19Speaker 3: what are you guys doing? And it is kind of...
- 3:23Speaker 3: I do kind of like it because just it is
- 3:27Speaker 3: a weird model that couldn't have existed in the past.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And now that the entire system is falling apart, I mean,
- 3:34Speaker 3: there isn't like network TV doesn't.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Operate the way it used to, or major motion pictures.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Doesn't really operate the way it used to really. So
- 3:41Speaker 3: like all these other systems of production have broken down and,
- 3:45Speaker 3: and radio either doesn't exist or is run by a conglomerate.
- 3:49Speaker 3: So it's like every form of media has its own
- 3:52Speaker 3: weird system now that, It doesn't work like it used to,
- 3:54Speaker 3: but this is an entirely new platform that you can
- 3:58Speaker 3: actually just self-fund things, and people who care about you
- 4:02Speaker 3: and want to support you can do it. That's kind
- 4:05Speaker 3: of amazing, really.
- 4:06Speaker 2: You know what it reminds me of? It's something that
- 4:08Speaker 2: you don't see anymore, but it's kind of a new form,
- 4:11Speaker 2: a new digital version of that. I used to love
- 4:15Speaker 2: buying cassette tape CDs back in the day, and then
- 4:18Speaker 2: you open up the flap, And you could join the
- 4:21Speaker 2: Metallica membership club, like send $ 5 self-addressed stamp.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Because Lars needs $ 5.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Right, yeah. And then you get a catalog from them
- 4:28Speaker 2: in the mail. And they don't do that anymore. They
- 4:31Speaker 2: don't do physical club memberships anymore.
- 4:34Speaker 3: With all of, yeah, like all of the, especially music
- 4:37Speaker 3: back in the day had a fan club.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And this is kind of like a new version of
- 4:41Speaker 2: that for individuals. You're basically making your own fan club
- 4:44Speaker 2: that people pay and you basically give them content of
- 4:47Speaker 2: some kind. You get to pick the content that they.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Get, so. again i really like the concept there yeah
- 4:53Speaker 3: and it's it's a fight getting people to either comprehend
- 4:56Speaker 3: it or care yeah so like i i kind of
- 5:00Speaker 3: appreciate the people who have come on board and anybody
- 5:03Speaker 3: else out there you know go right now go do
- 5:05Speaker 3: it yeah go to movie meltdown.com and join the pay
- 5:08Speaker 3: the patreon links right there on the side of the
- 5:11Speaker 3: page just go click on it and kick in.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Two bucks and this is all this this segment it's
- 5:15Speaker 2: going to be a patreon exclusive this like only on patreon.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Actually, this part I normally don't even talk about. To me,
- 5:24Speaker 3: that's the bonus is I usually don't bother running a
- 5:27Speaker 3: Patreon ad on the Patreon episodes because you're already there.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:31Speaker 3: The reason we were doing it now is we're here
- 5:34Speaker 3: with you. I'm going to tell our Patreon people to
- 5:37Speaker 3: go check out yours.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:39Speaker 3: So how do you find you?
- 5:41Speaker 2: Oh, just, you know, remember I have that weird name, Epion5.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And I always tell people, if you just Google it,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I'm the only thing that shows up. Which is true.
- 5:49Speaker 2: So Patreon.com slash Epion5. There you go. And I actually
- 5:54Speaker 2: post some content that's available for everybody to see. So
- 5:57Speaker 2: that way people can get a small taste.
- 6:00Speaker 3: I've thrown a few things out on there.
- 6:01Speaker 2: It's like a drug dealer. The first taste is free.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Most of the time I really like to just hoard
- 6:05Speaker 3: it and give it to our friends because screw everybody else.
- 6:07Speaker 3: But we will also, you know, in the show notes
- 6:11Speaker 3: for this episode, go down at the bottom and it
- 6:13Speaker 3: will be the link to your Patreon page.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you. That'd be cool. And then I'll post...
- 6:18Speaker 2: your link on mine. This is how this works. As
- 6:21Speaker 2: well as I'll post it also on like the Instagram
- 6:24Speaker 2: and Facebook and all that crap.
- 6:25Speaker 3: All cool internet friends. Come join the clubs. Both of them.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Are you going to do actual membership cards? Because I
- 6:31Speaker 2: always wanted to do that. Like send out membership cards.
- 6:33Speaker 3: What everybody wants because the running joke even before long
- 6:37Speaker 3: from the very beginning, we were constantly running clips from
- 6:43Speaker 3: fucking Christmas stories. So I was always like, get your
- 6:46Speaker 3: secret decoder pins. Yes. And like for years, Misty's still
- 6:50Speaker 3: pissed that we don't make secret decoder pins. So I'm like,
- 6:53Speaker 3: that takes funding. So like, again, if you guys can
- 6:56Speaker 3: roll it up to a high enough level, we can
- 6:58Speaker 3: afford to make those secret decoder pins.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You know what I did see? Joel Hodson did this
- 7:04Speaker 2: for Mystery Science because he was doing the Kickstarter to
- 7:06Speaker 2: get things rolling.
- 7:07Speaker 3: Everybody supported that.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:09Speaker 2: And I did too. I know. There was an option.
- 7:15Speaker 2: For a certain amount of money, you actually get a
- 7:18Speaker 2: membership card. And you had two choices. The cheap option
- 7:22Speaker 2: was you just get to digitally print it out on
- 7:24Speaker 2: your own. They gave you the file. But for like
- 7:27Speaker 2: five bucks, they actually send you a laminate version.
- 7:29Speaker 3: That's fancy.
- 7:31Speaker 2: I've thought about doing that myself. Maybe the Meltdown Club.
- 7:35Speaker 2: You'd be like, you know what? For fucking a dollar,
- 7:37Speaker 2: here's a JPEG you could print your shit out.
- 7:41Speaker 3: I suppose I could look into getting laminate virgin.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I'm not trying to tell you what to do.
- 7:47Speaker 3: You're just giving me extra work.
- 7:48Speaker 2: All I do is work.
- 7:51Speaker 3: So, but again, I wanted to support you and I.
- 7:55Speaker 3: did as the way i encourage all of you i
- 7:57Speaker 3: went to your patreon page and i am a member
- 7:59Speaker 3: so i saw that i try to inc again i
- 8:02Speaker 3: don't i don't ask for it blindly without thinking that
- 8:07Speaker 3: it's a little bit of a sacrifice i understand i
- 8:10Speaker 3: but i try to support the people that i am
- 8:13Speaker 3: impressed with and think have you know artistic skill.
- 8:16Speaker 2: And need to be doing stuff i live with shame
- 8:18Speaker 2: every day and this is well you should i know
- 8:20Speaker 2: this is my shame is because sadly i know that
- 8:22Speaker 2: you support me I have not subscribed to you. There's
- 8:26Speaker 2: other people I see at conventions all the time who
- 8:28Speaker 2: are like, oh, I support your Patreon page. And I'm like,
- 8:31Speaker 2: I know you have one, too. I have not subscribed.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I don't expect anyone to, really.
- 8:35Speaker 2: That's only because, like, at this particular point, not to
- 8:40Speaker 2: quote the fucking Aerosmith song, Living on the Edge, it's
- 8:43Speaker 2: like literally every dollar pays the bills. And we're like,
- 8:46Speaker 2: what am I left with this month? Zero.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Sweet. I certainly understand that.
- 8:51Speaker 2: So.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why everybody else needs to get on board.
- 8:55Speaker 3: We won't be dying in a ditch sometimes.
- 8:59Speaker 2: People, come on.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Come on.
- 9:00Speaker 2: I am a sensitive artist.
- 9:18Speaker 1: I am a sensitive artist
