- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like today.
- 0:15I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. All right, a Friday mini for you

- 0:29like a little bit different. You guys might have already seen

- 0:34I know some of you guys love an interview.
- 0:36I know some of you guys don't. So we're bringing you a casual
- 0:39mini scroll as well. OK, so let's get into the

- 0:55they've gone down. They haven't gone down.
- 0:56People have just stopped rating us because I stopped asking for
- 0:59it. So please, please Spotify star
- 1:01rate US or leave us a review on Apple or I don't know, subscribe
- 1:05to us on YouTube, subscribe to our newsletter.
- 1:07Annabelle will be very happy that I remembered to remind you
- 1:10guys. All right, so the first rate
- 1:12that I have for you guys today is that YouTube is making a play
- 1:17to host the Oscars. This is industry T.
- 1:21So for almost 5 decades the Academy Awards also the Oscars
- 1:26have been aired on ABC, which is owned I guess by Disney.
- 1:29I didn't know that. I don't know Walt Disney ABC.
- 1:32The contract is up for that in 2028.
- 1:34So The Academy Is entering into negotiations and YouTube is
- 1:38apparently bidding for the rights.
- 1:40According to Bloomberg quote, the Google owned video site has
- 1:43inquired about buying the rights to the Academy Awards according
- 1:46to two people familiar with the matter.
- 1:48OK, so even though this statement basically just says
- 1:51that YouTube wants to buy the broadcast rights for the Oscars,
- 1:55not necessarily that they're like a contender or like in
- 1:58negotiations. Yet some industry insiders seem
- 2:02to think that the Academy will definitely take YouTube's
- 2:04interest very seriously because moving the show to YouTube would
- 2:09cause so much noise. And that's kind of the point,
- 2:12right? Like, that would be a good thing
- 2:14for the struggling format of award shows.
- 2:17It would show that the Academy cares about young viewers, it
- 2:21cares about younger audiences and kind of like this new media
- 2:24boom and the direction, I guess in general of media towards new
- 2:27media. So I mean, I don't have to tell
- 2:29you guys about how award shows have lost such relevancy over
- 2:35the past, even just like 5 years, like definitely decade,
- 2:38but I'm going to say the pandemic really impacted our
- 2:41interest in award shows. So Bloomberg continues, quote,
- 2:45YouTube is the single most watched video platform in the
- 2:48world and the king of all media. It could deliver eyeballs and
- 2:52offer a giant global platform. That being said, a lot of the
- 2:56other bidders can offer both broadcast and streaming like NBC
- 3:00Universal and Amazon. So I don't know, we'll see.
- 3:03But that is very interesting to me that YouTube is bidding to
- 3:07host the Oscars. That's tea.
- 3:09Okay, the next story that I have for you guys, I'm sure this has
- 3:12been on some of your guys's for you, Paige.
- 3:14But a Mac employee at LAX was allegedly fired for vlogging her
- 3:19Day in the Life content. A creator named Bree recently
- 3:23blew up for her Day in the Life vlogs working as a store manager
- 3:26at Mac Cosmetics at the LAX airport.
- 3:28She would vlog time stamps of her day, but they were
- 3:32incredibly detailed. So she would vlog, like arriving
- 3:35at work, showing exactly how airport employees get through
- 3:38the airport. She would show the exact
- 3:41sequence of how she opens and closes the store, including
- 3:45where in that sequence she's counting the money, transferring
- 3:48money from a safe to the register and back, all the
- 3:52behind the scenes of like the counter process.
- 3:54Like, literally everything. And this detail is certainly
- 3:59part of the reason why she blew up, right?
- 4:01Because it's really like taking you behind the scenes of
- 4:05someone's job in a way that if you had not had a job at an
- 4:08airport or in a retail environment like Mac, you know,
- 4:12you'd have no idea what a day in that life looks like.
- 4:15But now in her most recent vlog, she posted that she was fired
- 4:20from this job. So it started off as like a
- 4:23regular vlog. She was time stamping her
- 4:26morning. It seemed like a totally regular
- 4:28day from her vlog. And then at 11 AM, she vlogged a
- 4:31clip of herself sobbing, carrying all of her stuff out,
- 4:33saying she got fired. And she confirmed that happened
- 4:36in the comments. So we are starting to see more
- 4:38consequences of the kind of boom or like interest in like
- 4:43regular, quote UN quote workplace content.
- 4:45Like workplace content is so popular right now and I think if
- 4:49you're removed from content creation, the concept of like
- 4:53workplace content being on the rise and like filming a day in
- 4:56the life at work, like that kind of seems insane.
- 5:00But I do know from first hand experience, like for me posting
- 5:04about the founder journey, for example, like I know how
- 5:06challenging it can be to sometimes figure out like where
- 5:10the line is because you get so much positive reinforcement when
- 5:14you are posting content like this.
- 5:16Like you get positive reinforcement from comments from
- 5:19DMS of people being like, Oh my God, your content helps me so
- 5:22much. You're helping me navigate this
- 5:23journey. You get obviously views,
- 5:26followers. Like all of that is both
- 5:29directly and also like indirectly subconsciously
- 5:31telling you that putting out more and more transparent
- 5:34content is a good thing and that this is going to lead to
- 5:38positive consequences for you. But in this particular instance,
- 5:42the biggest problem is that she was vlogging things that could
- 5:45put her actual physical safety, the safety of the the other
- 5:48staff and you know, the safety of the store in general in
- 5:52danger. Like I said, she's blocking the
- 5:54exact times when she's transferring like giant wads of
- 5:58cash. She's also flashing her employee
- 6:01like TSA badge to like get through TSA.
- 6:04She's like flashing that badge, which I assume has like some
- 6:06type of confidential information.
- 6:08So she was just showing like way too much.
- 6:11And I am absolutely a huge advocate for workplaces allowing
- 6:16their employees to have social media side hustles to build
- 6:20personal brands on the side. Like that's a big point of
- 6:23friction in media specifically, at least in Australia.
- 6:26I have so many friends who work in media and they work like big
- 6:29publishers and they're not allowed to have like a personal
- 6:32brand outside of their jobs because in the eyes of their
- 6:36employers, their likeness publicly is owned by the company
- 6:41or like they publicly represent the company.
- 6:43Because media is kind of more of like a high profile industry.
- 6:47And so the company that they write for or that they create
- 6:50content for feels like they own them like 24/7 and they can't
- 6:55post anything really like for their own personal brand.
- 6:58And I don't agree with that. Like I think if your likeness is
- 7:03quote UN quote, owned by your company, then you should be
- 7:06compensated for that. And I can tell you that media is
- 7:08not compensating anyone for that.
- 7:13So yeah, like, I, I think if you're not fairly compensated
- 7:16for that, then that shouldn't necessarily be the case.
- 7:20And I think in general, like the world has changed so much.
- 7:23And if someone wants to build a personal brand for themselves to
- 7:26open career opportunities, like I don't think that workplaces
- 7:30should necessarily have a say in that.
- 7:31However, I think if you are vlogging at the workplace, using
- 7:38that workplace as part of your personal brand, sharing
- 7:42confidential information about the business processes that
- 7:45could put the company and its employees in harm's way.
- 7:49Like whether that's a competitor being able to gather information
- 7:53on your company from your content and the stuff that
- 7:56you're posting or putting people in literal danger.
- 7:59Like I said, Bree showing like when they're holding massive
- 8:02wads of cash walking around the airport day-to-day.
- 8:06You know, then, yeah, that is actually when an employer has
- 8:09every right to obviously step in.
- 8:11Like you have to have some discernment, you know, Yes, this
- 8:15has really blown up. People have a lot of opinions
- 8:17online. Brie has made a statement on her
- 8:21comment section. She said, hey guys, I'll be
- 8:23coming out with the story time soon.
- 8:25But just want to make it clear Mac did not have a say in this
- 8:28decision. This was a decision made by the
- 8:30airport. I'm still in great standing with
- 8:32the Mac brand and I'm exploring other possible Mac
- 8:35opportunities. I think that makes even more
- 8:37sense. Like of course an airport
- 8:39security is like top priority there.
- 8:42So her vlogging day in the lives where again like she is showing
- 8:45her TSA badge. Oh, my God, there is a little
- 8:47fly, like a little baby fly from this plant flying around.
- 8:51If you guys are watching this, I'm very sorry.
- 8:52It keeps like going in front of the camera.
- 8:54But yeah, these are just things that like, we didn't even have
- 8:56to really think about. Like, I don't know, five years
- 9:00ago, you know, like the average person could be vlogging their
- 9:03day-to-day and you could be a customer at a store and you have
- 9:06no idea that behind the counter their phone is propped up and
- 9:09they are recording your entire interaction.
- 9:12And that's going to end up on TikTok.
- 9:14Like there's all of these very interesting cultural things that
- 9:18have come out of TikTok, like not just the fact that it
- 9:20absolutely completely transformed what like Internet
- 9:24culture means and how we source information and all of that,
- 9:27which is already like massive, massive change, but also how we
- 9:32function as people online. Like how everybody now is a
- 9:35content creator. And you just kind of have to
- 9:37anticipate that like anywhere you go, somebody could be making
- 9:40content for TikTok and you could be in it.
- 9:43All right. The last thing that I wanted to
- 9:44touch on today, it's not necessarily a story, but we've
- 9:49been seeing a concerning new trend online targeting young
- 9:52women. And so I did want to share a
- 9:54little bit about it. OK.
- 9:56So like amid the kind of stay at home girlfriend, soft life,
- 10:00Princess treatment, trad wife anti vax type content that is
- 10:05getting pushed constantly towards young women more and
- 10:08more online, there's this new emerging iteration that these
- 10:13types of creators are starting to push.
- 10:16And that is the idea that women don't need female friendships.
- 10:21So there's a concerning increase in videos online by creators who
- 10:25operate in these niches that I just mentioned telling women
- 10:28that basically to like help balance it all and keep their
- 10:32priorities straight as they enter into, you know, their long
- 10:35term relationships into their motherhood journey.
- 10:38It's natural and healthy to let your female friendships go.
- 10:43That female friendship is essentially like a phase of your
- 10:46life that is more immature. This messaging is really just to
- 10:50isolate women further, especially at such vulnerable
- 10:53stages of their lives like pregnancy and motherhood and,
- 10:57you know, entering into lifelong partnerships and combining your
- 11:00finances with a man. And all of these like major
- 11:03things that are being pushed by these women too, You know,
- 11:06telling women to give up their financial control to men and to
- 11:10have a million babies for that man and now telling them to not
- 11:13have friends, not female friends that they can talk to about
- 11:16anything. And it's completely false.
- 11:19Like we should be pouring, like I, we have so many young women
- 11:23that listen to this podcast and I just feel very passionate
- 11:25about this, OK. We should be pouring so much
- 11:28more into our female friendships as we get older because in
- 11:32theory, as we age, life gets more complicated.
- 11:35Like the stakes get higher and you need that support and that
- 11:39village from other women. Let me share an anecdote for
- 11:42you, OK? Mid last year, I went through
- 11:44like the worst time of my life. And a huge part of that was
- 11:49related to this legal situation that Centennial was dealing
- 11:53with. And because of how that whole
- 11:56legal situation went down, like I developed like mild temporary
- 12:01kind of PTSD because of it. And during that time, it was the
- 12:05women in my life and the women in their lives as well who got
- 12:10me through it. Like I have a husband, I have a
- 12:12close relationship with my brother.
- 12:13I have a close relationship with my dad.
- 12:15I do have really good men in my life, but in that time of
- 12:20crisis, it was the women in my life who took action to help me
- 12:25rather than just kind of, like, giving me advice.
- 12:28I didn't have to ask for it. I feel like it's just so
- 12:31innately part of female friendship, like telling, you
- 12:34know, my different friends who live all over the world about
- 12:37what was happening to me, and immediately they would just,
- 12:40like, jump into action, OK? Like, I had friends around the
- 12:44world who were reaching out to their network of women to get me
- 12:48the resource, the information, the help that I needed.
- 12:51Every single person like lawyer, banker, associate, accountant,
- 12:57advisor that I spoke to during that time, Those were all people
- 13:02that I was connected to through a female friendship.
- 13:06Sometimes multiple parts removed.
- 13:08Like at one point I was sitting on the phone.
- 13:11I was sitting in Sydney, Australia, on the phone with a
- 13:15partner at a law firm downtown Toronto who I was connected to
- 13:19through my friend who lives in Portland, OR.
- 13:22And she reached out to her friend who is a lawyer at a law
- 13:26firm in Toronto. And her friend said to her boss,
- 13:29like, I need your help. You need to get on the phone
- 13:32with my friend, a friend and give her some advice and like,
- 13:36we need to work through this. And it's not just that tangible
- 13:39stuff that you get from female friendships.
- 13:41You know, that support extends emotionally, mental health wise.
- 13:45One of my best friends, Crystal, like I know I can voice note her
- 13:49anytime of the day in need of emotional support And she will
- 13:53be there for me. And I hope she feels the same
- 13:55about me. And unlike what people say on
- 13:57TikTok, that is not using your friend as your therapist.
- 14:01Like deep friendships are meant to weather these roller
- 14:05coasters. You are meant to be there to
- 14:07support your friends. And you know, I think as we age,
- 14:10like I said, the stakes get higher.
- 14:12Like, you need women to help you through the tough shit, parents
- 14:16passing away, toxic relationships, financial
- 14:19problems, legal issues, massive career blows, infertility,
- 14:23motherhood in general. You know, it's through female
- 14:26friendships that you will find your strength.
- 14:30So please do not listen to that propaganda that's just trying to
- 14:35keep us lonely and isolated so that we will stay more
- 14:40submissive. I can't believe I'm crying.
- 14:43It's through the strength of women in my life that have
- 14:47gotten me through the hardest times and I don't want any women
- 14:51to feel like they should not prioritize female friendships.
- 14:54OK, that's it for many school today guys.
- 14:57Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 15:00Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 15:03Please Spotify star rate US. I love you and I will talk to
- 15:06you on Monday. Bye.
