Latest / Foul Territory / Dodgers-Phillies NLDS chat with Jerry Hairston Jr.

- 0:03Speaker 1: We've got Dodgers broadcaster and former Big leaguer Jerry Harrison
- 0:06Speaker 1: Junior joining us right now. He's always on the postgame
- 0:09Speaker 1: pregame on Sports at LA. Jerry, great to see you, man.
- 0:12Speaker 1: What do you think of these first two games here
- 0:14Speaker 1: for the Dodgers against what many looked at as maybe
- 0:18Speaker 1: the top team or at least the top three team
- 0:20Speaker 1: in the sport.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Well, yeah, listen, I would be lying to you if
- 0:25Speaker 2: I said I knew going into the Dodgers would take
- 0:28Speaker 2: the first two games in Philadelphia. As you guys are
- 0:31Speaker 2: well aware, you know that's Philadelphia is a tough place
- 0:34Speaker 2: to play, let alone win. And for the Dodgers to
- 0:37Speaker 2: go out there and take the first two games on
- 0:39Speaker 2: the road in Philadelphia, it's a little surprising. But you know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: this Dodger team, they're defending World Series champions. They played
- 0:46Speaker 2: in houstel environments before, and they played great baseball. When
- 0:50Speaker 2: you get great starting pitcher, not good great starting pitching
- 0:53Speaker 2: like the Dodgers. They put themselves in position to win
- 0:56Speaker 2: these ball games, and they're very fortunate coming up home
- 1:00Speaker 2: two oh and have a chance to close out the
- 1:03Speaker 2: series in La.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Do we see an actual bullpen pitcher come out of
- 1:09Speaker 3: the bullpen for the Dodgers the restless series. After what
- 1:12Speaker 3: we saw last night from VESSI end Trinan, Well.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Listen, you know, first, Alex Vestris put in a tough situation.
- 1:21Speaker 2: You know, he was definitely put in a tough situation,
- 1:23Speaker 2: did the best he could. He's been outstanding the entire season.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Blake Trianon is an absolute warrior. He's a Dodgers legend.
- 1:31Speaker 2: We don't win the World Series last year without Blake Trining.
- 1:34Speaker 2: He's battled through some injuries this year. But to really
- 1:38Speaker 2: answer your question, I think we all were a little
- 1:40Speaker 2: surprised that Rookie Sazaki didn't get the ball in the
- 1:44Speaker 2: ninth inning up the runs to really close out the
- 1:48Speaker 2: Phillies there too. Oh, I was surprised. I know a
- 1:52Speaker 2: lot of people were surprised. I will say this, I
- 1:55Speaker 2: think moving forward, I think it's pretty clear that rookie
- 1:58Speaker 2: Sazaki is to die closer. I think if they're in
- 2:02Speaker 2: a similar situation to close out Game three, I think
- 2:05Speaker 2: you're to see Rookie Kazaki take them mound.
- 2:07Speaker 4: But you know, listen, the Dodger bullpen.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Everybody understands that it hasn't been their strength, and that's
- 2:14Speaker 2: why they've added guys like Tinder a Glass now put
- 2:17Speaker 2: him in the pens shee and did an outstanding job
- 2:19Speaker 2: last last night. And you see Clayton Kershaw in the
- 2:22Speaker 2: bullplin as well. So it's the post needs demand. Whatever
- 2:26Speaker 2: you need to do to close out games, to win
- 2:28Speaker 2: ball games, you're gonna do.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Do you feel like maybe Dave Roberts wasn't one hundred
- 2:34Speaker 3: percent sure of rookie in that moment, that's why he
- 2:36Speaker 3: didn't make him start the ninth inning? Do you feel
- 2:39Speaker 3: like it was the matchups because they had the off day,
- 2:43Speaker 3: It wasn't the fact that, wow, he was a starter
- 2:45Speaker 3: all year. I know he's coming off the injury. We
- 2:47Speaker 3: don't know if he's gonna be able to bounce back.
- 2:50Speaker 3: There seems like a level of uncertainty from what I
- 2:54Speaker 3: watch and what I see, And then when they don't
- 2:55Speaker 3: bring him out in the ninth I'm like, why would
- 2:59Speaker 3: they not go to him? So I was in your camp.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Yeah, well that's a great question. I think that was
- 3:04Speaker 4: the very first question.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Dave Roberts was asked in his press conference after the game,
- 3:09Speaker 2: and he said, listen, I have belief in Blake Trining.
- 3:12Speaker 2: You know, he said that he wanted him, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: go out there and get those three outs, just showing
- 3:18Speaker 2: confidence in him. But just seeing his facebal expression, I
- 3:22Speaker 2: think he knew, you know what, maybe I should have
- 3:24Speaker 2: went to rookie.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Now. He did also say that, you know.
- 3:27Speaker 2: He didn't want to overwork rookiees aazaki Biss because this
- 3:30Speaker 2: is a new role for him. It'll be the second
- 3:33Speaker 2: time he's pitched in three days. But I will say this,
- 3:36Speaker 2: he's built up like a starter. He was injured majority
- 3:40Speaker 2: of the year, so he's fresh, and he's also young.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And when you're young and you're in the postseason, you're
- 3:46Speaker 2: going through so much adrenaline. You know, those innings aren't
- 3:50Speaker 2: really going to add up. So, like I said, they
- 3:52Speaker 2: have the day off today. If they're in that position,
- 3:55Speaker 2: Hopefully the Dodgers are in that position tomorrow night and
- 3:59Speaker 2: they got a chance to close out the Phillies.
- 4:01Speaker 4: If they're in that position, I have a really good
- 4:04Speaker 4: feeling rookies Zaki will be will be in that position
- 4:06Speaker 4: to close out the game.
- 4:08Speaker 5: Yeah, he's been, He's been absolutely lights out. I want
- 4:10Speaker 5: to talk about tasker Hernandez a little bit. This guy
- 4:13Speaker 5: just seems like playoffs come around, he just absolutely finds
- 4:16Speaker 5: a way to get the job done. The opposite field,
- 4:19Speaker 5: home run, the base. It's like this guy is absolutely unbelievable.
- 4:22Speaker 5: They talk about, you know, the ball in the gap,
- 4:25Speaker 5: not running out the first base, but I think the
- 4:27Speaker 5: way he's been hitting the ball, I think you'll take
- 4:29Speaker 5: that as you move forward.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Rise of a young guy I played with years ago.
- 4:34Speaker 2: He's come up to the system with the reds light
- 4:36Speaker 2: tower power named Todd Frazier.
- 4:38Speaker 4: I don't know if you want part of him.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Uh Frase could hit the ball out of the ballpark anywhere,
- 4:43Speaker 2: right field, right center, dead center, doesn't matter. Taskar Nanas
- 4:46Speaker 2: has that type of power. And listen, you know this
- 4:50Speaker 2: season and a lot of people aren't aware, especially guys
- 4:53Speaker 2: are on Dodger fans. Taskar Nandas was battling through some
- 4:56Speaker 2: growing issues and it kind of kind of got up
- 4:59Speaker 2: to which is abdomen and he really couldn't fire his hands,
- 5:02Speaker 2: fire his hips to the baseball, so he didn't have
- 5:05Speaker 2: the season he would have lights. But we know on
- 5:08Speaker 2: the once he's close to one hundred and then the
- 5:11Speaker 2: bell rings of the postseason, he's that dude loves the
- 5:15Speaker 2: bright lights, loves to be in those situations, wants the guy,
- 5:19Speaker 2: wants to be the guy with the bat in his hands,
- 5:21Speaker 2: to be a difference maker at the plate. And it's
- 5:24Speaker 2: no surprise to us that he's come up clutch, come
- 5:26Speaker 2: up huge, not just this postseason but last year as well.
- 5:30Speaker 2: And another guy you know because they call him the
- 5:32Speaker 2: Hernandez Brothers, Keithy Aaron Nanis. It's no secret to us
- 5:37Speaker 2: he's a difference maker in the postseason. He just lights
- 5:40Speaker 2: up when the bright lights are on. And the postseasons here, uh.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Those two guys man Keik and the taskar Man. Those
- 5:48Speaker 2: guys have been clutched in the postseason so far. We
- 5:51Speaker 2: expect him to continue to play well because we're going
- 5:54Speaker 2: to desperately need him If this team's gonna repeat.
- 5:57Speaker 3: The best hitter with the runnings and scoring position would
- 5:59Speaker 3: be clutch and that's Will Smith. Has Will Smith rehabbed
- 6:03Speaker 3: enough in the in the NLDS against Big League Baseball
- 6:08Speaker 3: teams to say, Okay, we're starting in game in Game three.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I mean, I've never seen anything like it. The guy's
- 6:14Speaker 3: not healthy enough to start. He's one of your clutch hitters.
- 6:17Speaker 3: And yet he's played half the game. So are they
- 6:19Speaker 3: just building him up? Are they going to have like
- 6:21Speaker 3: an inning where they roll it over to so it's
- 6:23Speaker 3: like spring training.
- 6:26Speaker 4: You know, I haven't seed it either.
- 6:28Speaker 2: You know, it's amazing, And I will say this, Ben
- 6:31Speaker 2: Urtvett has done an incredible job behind the plate calling pitches,
- 6:37Speaker 2: and he had that rapport with the starting pitchers. So
- 6:40Speaker 2: the Dodgers have had that luxury to be able to
- 6:43Speaker 2: be able to slow play Will Smith to make sure
- 6:46Speaker 2: he's near or close to one hundred percent, and they
- 6:49Speaker 2: can use Will Smith as that weapon, you know, like
- 6:52Speaker 2: they did in game one and obviously in game two
- 6:54Speaker 2: when he came out off the bench and you know,
- 6:57Speaker 2: got in the game and had a huge two run same.
- 7:00Speaker 2: So I have a feeling, you know, now that they
- 7:02Speaker 2: work Will Smith in I think he's going to be
- 7:04Speaker 2: a starter Game three. But if not, they have confidence
- 7:08Speaker 2: in Ben Wartville because he does a great job calling
- 7:11Speaker 2: the game just like Will Smith. But listen, Will Smith
- 7:15Speaker 2: is a difference maker, as we all know, with the bat,
- 7:17Speaker 2: also with the arm. You know, he has a rocket
- 7:20Speaker 2: of an arm. It's very accurate. He really kind of
- 7:22Speaker 2: slows down the running game as well. So I'm hoping
- 7:25Speaker 2: Will Smith is back in the lineup in game three
- 7:29Speaker 2: because anytime you're dealing with that throwing hand, having that
- 7:32Speaker 2: little fracture in his hand.
- 7:33Speaker 4: It could be an issue.
- 7:34Speaker 2: So hopefully he's healthy enough to start, because we all
- 7:36Speaker 2: know that Will Smith is an absolutely difference maker in
- 7:40Speaker 2: the lineup.

- 8:39Speaker 1: Fox favorites together in one place at the Fox one app.
- 8:44Speaker 5: I want to talk about the biggest play that happened
- 8:47Speaker 5: yesterday on the wheel play bunt. I want to first,
- 8:51Speaker 5: I want to get to know what if you've heard
- 8:53Speaker 5: anything about what they do and their bunt plays and seconds.
- 8:56Speaker 5: As an infielder well as a hitter, you're supposed to
- 8:59Speaker 5: bunt the ball third base. You want that third baseman
- 9:01Speaker 5: to come through and attack the ball, which which is
- 9:04Speaker 5: what you're ultimately trying to get out of him. They
- 9:09Speaker 5: just did it to perfection. The bunt went to third base.
- 9:12Speaker 5: All of a sudden, I'm just drawing a blank. Who
- 9:14Speaker 5: is at third base? Gott It makes the play, throws
- 9:19Speaker 5: the ball to third and Moki. I felt like Mooki
- 9:22Speaker 5: was the separation from him and Castianos wasn't even that
- 9:26Speaker 5: far away, and then he just took off.
- 9:28Speaker 4: It was the perfect play.
- 9:29Speaker 5: I thought the bunt was perfect, don't get me wrong,
- 9:32Speaker 5: but I think the execution of the Dodgers was a
- 9:34Speaker 5: lot better.
- 9:35Speaker 2: You know that phrase. You're exactly right. You know, I'm
- 9:38Speaker 2: going to take the Philly side. You know, this is
- 9:40Speaker 2: a really good butt, Scott is You're taught to deaden
- 9:44Speaker 2: the ball towards third base, which he does.
- 9:47Speaker 4: It's a really good butt by Scott. But here's the thing.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Teams don't really practice.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Bunt plays anymore because a lot of teams don't bunt anymore.
- 9:57Speaker 4: This is not like, you.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Know, fifteen years ago, when you have the picture bunning
- 10:00Speaker 2: and you have this wheel play, you have so many
- 10:02Speaker 2: different plays to defend the bunt.
- 10:06Speaker 4: This all happened because of Mookie Bets.
- 10:09Speaker 2: When they all got on them mount Mookie said, you
- 10:11Speaker 2: know what, all the momentum has gone towards the Phillies.
- 10:14Speaker 2: We got to make sure we cut down that runner
- 10:17Speaker 2: at third base if and when they do bunt, because
- 10:20Speaker 2: if he gets a third base less than two outs,
- 10:22Speaker 2: they tie the ball game up, and then now all
- 10:25Speaker 2: the momentum goes to the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 10:28Speaker 4: So that was really Mookie Betts saying, hey, let's just
- 10:30Speaker 4: make this play happen. Let's do it.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Max Munky does an incredible job crashing as well as
- 10:35Speaker 2: Freddy Freeman, you know, for us, and you know this phrase.
- 10:39Speaker 4: You want him to bun.
- 10:40Speaker 2: It towards first because now the first base from Freddy
- 10:43Speaker 2: Freeman of Oh Glover, He's got a clear look to
- 10:46Speaker 2: third base. So Scott does the right thing, bunch it
- 10:49Speaker 2: and dends it towards third base. But Max Munsey really
- 10:53Speaker 2: makes that play because he crashes hard and he's almost
- 10:56Speaker 2: on top of him when he makes that play, and
- 10:58Speaker 2: he fires an absolute stripe moving target in Mooki Bets
- 11:02Speaker 2: and able to apply the tag. And I will say this,
- 11:06Speaker 2: Mookie Betts showed the crash late that is so important
- 11:11Speaker 2: for a shortstop.
- 11:11Speaker 4: And see him break.
- 11:12Speaker 2: He's breaking after the pitch is practically released. So now
- 11:17Speaker 2: as a hitter, because as a hitter, if I'm up
- 11:20Speaker 2: at the plate like Stott, I'm seeing the shortstop break
- 11:24Speaker 2: and once I see the shortstop break, then I'm gonna
- 11:25Speaker 2: slash because Mookie Bess did it so late and he's
- 11:30Speaker 2: so fast going over there. Stops, That's okay, he's not
- 11:33Speaker 2: they're not doing the will play. I'll just execute the
- 11:36Speaker 2: bunch with which he does. So Mookie Bets is really
- 11:38Speaker 2: the one who set up that play. Because he broke
- 11:42Speaker 2: to the bag of late. The attention to detail, man,
- 11:45Speaker 2: was so perfect, and I want I want to say
- 11:48Speaker 2: another thing. Mookie applies a tag after Freddy Freeman knows
- 11:53Speaker 2: that that ball is not coming to him. Freddy Freeman
- 11:56Speaker 2: makes a bee line towards second base to make sure
- 11:59Speaker 2: second base is covered and that way stop doesn't go
- 12:03Speaker 2: from first to second base. It was a well executed
- 12:06Speaker 2: bump play, something that I would expect the nineteen nineties
- 12:10Speaker 2: type of teams to execute, but these guys executed perfection
- 12:14Speaker 2: and they don't practice that play that just goes to
- 12:16Speaker 2: show their baseball IQ And it.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Was just so well run. Man. It was really fun
- 12:20Speaker 4: to see so.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Well run you forgot the fact that the dude's got
- 12:24Speaker 3: six gold gloves at another position, Like it's like it's
- 12:28Speaker 3: really his first full season playing it. It's like, yeah,
- 12:31Speaker 3: you know what, guys out here in this wiffleball game,
- 12:34Speaker 3: we're gonna go do this. Let's go to the end
- 12:36Speaker 3: of the game, Tommy Edmonds throw one. Has this been
- 12:41Speaker 3: something that you've seen? Is it something that going forward?
- 12:44Speaker 3: Has there been some like eh?
- 12:46Speaker 4: No? And two?
- 12:49Speaker 3: Does Freddy get overlooked at first base because of what
- 12:53Speaker 3: he does. You just said it on him covering second
- 12:56Speaker 3: base because he hits so well and he's kind of
- 12:59Speaker 3: like stiff looking. Does he get overlooked at first base?
- 13:04Speaker 4: I think maybe naturally he made good overlooked.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I have the luxury to see these guys play every
- 13:10Speaker 2: single night. And I remember when when Freddie Freeman signed
- 13:15Speaker 2: with the Dodgers, David Ross, who's the manager with the
- 13:18Speaker 2: Cubs of the time we played together with the Reds,
- 13:21Speaker 2: he said, Man, I'm telling you he's a baseball player.
- 13:23Speaker 4: He's going to be the best base runner you've ever seen.
- 13:26Speaker 4: I've never seen a.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Guy go first to third or first to home better
- 13:30Speaker 2: than Freddy Freeman. The angles he takes and he was
- 13:33Speaker 2: right incredible base runner as well. But on the defensive side,
- 13:37Speaker 2: you mentioned he's the goal glover for a reason. He
- 13:40Speaker 2: saves so many throws in the dirt, makes it making
- 13:44Speaker 2: it look easy saving his infielders. And listen, as a
- 13:47Speaker 2: former infielder myself, third, short and second, sometimes you're.
- 13:51Speaker 4: Not going to get the best grips on the baseball.
- 13:52Speaker 2: You got to be able to fire it over there
- 13:54Speaker 2: and pray that your first base and can pick you
- 13:57Speaker 2: up on the Timmy Edmund throw. I have never seen
- 14:00Speaker 2: Tommy Edmund make a bad throw ever at shortstop, third base,
- 14:04Speaker 2: and at second base.
- 14:05Speaker 4: He's a goal glover of second base. One.
- 14:07Speaker 2: The only thing I can think of is when he
- 14:09Speaker 2: had the ball, he didn't have the best grip, and
- 14:11Speaker 2: as an infielder, sometimes you start to get your grip
- 14:14Speaker 2: on the FLYO. Okay, as I'm going back, then I'll
- 14:17Speaker 2: find the grip and now be able to throw. He
- 14:19Speaker 2: didn't have the grip and he knew guess who was running,
- 14:22Speaker 2: Trey Turner flying down the line, and he said, God,
- 14:25Speaker 2: I just got to get it over there, and he
- 14:27Speaker 2: threw it over there, and fortunately for all of us, Freddy.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Freeman was able to pick him up.
- 14:31Speaker 2: But no, I have never seen Tommy had to make
- 14:34Speaker 2: a bath throw. That probably the only bad throw I'll
- 14:36Speaker 2: ever see him make, because he is so fundamentally sound
- 14:39Speaker 2: and is so accurate with his throws.
- 14:43Speaker 3: Jerry Philadelphia is on fire right now on one because
- 14:47Speaker 3: they're about to be eliminated.
- 14:48Speaker 4: Two.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Aaron Nola is pitching. He is starting the game tomorrow.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Philly fans are like, why, from a Dodgers point of view,
- 14:59Speaker 3: look at the Philly decision to pitch Aaron Nola. Do
- 15:03Speaker 3: you feel like that gives them an advantage because of
- 15:06Speaker 3: how they've struggled against left handers early in this series,
- 15:09Speaker 3: and now, to me, their biggest their their biggest linch
- 15:14Speaker 3: pin in the lineup is Max Munsey. He gets to start,
- 15:17Speaker 3: but then he's got a face lefty. So from a
- 15:20Speaker 3: Dodgers standpoint, do you go who I'm licking my chops?
- 15:24Speaker 3: We might get two or three off of Nola before
- 15:26Speaker 3: they can even pull them.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Listen, I understand the Philly fans. I get it why
- 15:31Speaker 2: they feel like they just dropped two at home. Like
- 15:34Speaker 2: I mentioned earlier, it is a tough place to play there,
- 15:37Speaker 2: and for the Dodgers to steal a game, Uh, then
- 15:41Speaker 2: steal two, that's huge on the flip side. And I'm
- 15:45Speaker 2: just gonna kind of reiterate with Max, Max Mounsey said
- 15:47Speaker 2: last night. Also, Mookie Betts, Listen, you don't take anything
- 15:51Speaker 2: for granted. This is the Phillies team. Veteran players on
- 15:54Speaker 2: that team. You have world champions like Kyle Schwarber, world
- 15:58Speaker 2: champion like Trade Turn as well, guys that are veteran
- 16:02Speaker 2: guys that aren't going to be rattled by going into
- 16:04Speaker 2: Dodger State. They're very familiar with that ballpark, so I'm
- 16:08Speaker 2: sure they're going to go out there and make sure
- 16:10Speaker 2: they put their best foot forward. And you're gonna have
- 16:13Speaker 2: to play the Dodgers are They're gonna have to play
- 16:14Speaker 2: their best game. They're not gonna roll over. That team
- 16:17Speaker 2: is not going to roll over. And to really answer
- 16:20Speaker 2: your question, I think manager Rob Thompson is trying to
- 16:24Speaker 2: give them a different look.
- 16:26Speaker 4: We've faced two lefties.
- 16:28Speaker 2: You throw the right hander out like kind of like
- 16:30Speaker 2: you kind of reiterated with Nola, and maybe he gets
- 16:34Speaker 2: you three or four strong innings and possibly I have
- 16:37Speaker 2: a feeling maybe Ranger Schwarz comes in after him to
- 16:40Speaker 2: piggyback him when you have your left handed hitters already
- 16:43Speaker 2: in the lineup for the Dodgers, So listen, I know
- 16:45Speaker 2: there's always a cat and mouse game, but their backs
- 16:48Speaker 2: are against the wall. I think everybody's gonna be available
- 16:51Speaker 2: for the Phillies and they're a desperate team and they're
- 16:54Speaker 2: just thinking, hey, if we just get Game one. Then
- 16:58Speaker 2: the first game at Dodger State, which is games read,
- 17:00Speaker 2: all the pressure really shipped back to the Dodgers in
- 17:03Speaker 2: Game four, because they know they don't want to go
- 17:05Speaker 2: back to Philly for Game five, So there's still pressure
- 17:08Speaker 2: on the Dodgers, pressure on both sides. You just got
- 17:11Speaker 2: to play good baseball, man, and hopefully with a Dodger's shake,
- 17:14Speaker 2: they continue to playing baseball and really push put this
- 17:17Speaker 2: veteran Phillies team away.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Jerry, great stuff. Really good to see you. I loved
- 17:23Speaker 1: your quick analysis on Todd father at one point to
- 17:26Speaker 1: the pop to hall Field. You got him going, man,
- 17:28Speaker 1: you got him flexing, taught him that?
- 17:31Speaker 4: Who do you think taught him that when he was
- 17:32Speaker 4: coming up? I was at the Reds who taught him?
- 17:34Speaker 4: That's right? Hey, I'm waiting.
- 17:38Speaker 5: The only the only difference I used your brother's bat
- 17:42Speaker 5: from the Marouchie Back Company. Not You're sorry, big Doll,
- 17:45Speaker 5: My bad, My bad, Big Scott, Big Scott, your hair.
