Latest / Clone Wars: The Spinoff / Equity Over the Check: Why Jay-Z and 50 Cent Bet on Ownership
Transcript
- 0:00Yo, welcome back to Clone Wars: The Spinoff.
- 0:03I want to start with something the OGs learned the hard way.
- 0:06Back in the day, a lot of us signed whatever was in front of us for a check that
- 0:09felt big at the time.
- 0:11Masters gone, publishing gone, name and likeness gone.
- 0:16Today we're talking about the flip side of that lesson - artists who said no to the
- 0:21bigger check because they wanted the smaller piece of the actual business.
- 0:26This is a real culture shift too, not just a money shift.
- 0:29When a brand only wants to pay you a flat fee, that's a paid ad,
- 0:33plain and simple - they get the clout, you get a check, and six months later nobody
- 0:38remembers the campaign.
- 0:40When a brand gives you equity, that's them saying we're actually building something
- 0:44with you.
- 0:45That changes how you show up creatively, how you talk about it,
- 0:49everything.
- 0:50Right, it's the difference between renting your name out for a weekend and actually
- 0:53owning a piece of the block.
- 0:55Let's put real numbers on it, because the math is not close.
- 0:58Jay-Z's D'Ussé deal - if he'd taken a straight endorsement over ten years,
- 1:02industry estimates put that around fifty million dollars.
- 1:06Instead he took equity in the brand itself.
- 1:08When LVMH bought a majority stake, that fifty million turned into roughly seven
- 1:13hundred fifty million.
- 1:13That's fifteen times the payout, for choosing ownership over a paycheck.
- 1:17Fifty Cent did the same thing with Vitaminwater.
- 1:20He turned down guaranteed money to take equity in Glaceau instead.
- 1:25When Coca-Cola bought that company for over four billion, his stake was worth
- 1:29somewhere between sixty and a hundred million - about twenty times bigger than the
- 1:33check he walked away from.
- 1:34And this isn't old news anymore, this is the standard now.
- 1:38This year, more than half of all brand deals - fifty three percent - are structured
- 1:42with performance or equity upside, almost double what it was two years ago.
- 1:46And that's not just a superstar move anymore, that's trickling all the way down to
- 1:50where I'm at.
- 1:51I've started asking brands I work with for a revenue share on merch drops instead of
- 1:55just a flat sponsorship for a tour date.
- 1:58Even a small percentage of a product line beats a one-time check,
- 2:02because that check spends the same day, but the percentage keeps hitting every time
- 2:06somebody buys a hoodie.
- 2:08For indie artists listening, you don't need a Jay-Z sized deal to use this.
- 2:12If a small brand wants you to post about their product, ask what a rev share or a
- 2:16small equity piece looks like instead of a flat rate.
- 2:19Worst case they say no and you take the check anyway.
- 2:22Best case you're building something that pays you after the tour's over.
- 2:26This connects straight back to knowledge of self.
- 2:29Before you can negotiate equity instead of a check, you have to actually know what
- 2:34you're worth - your numbers, your reach, your leverage.
- 2:39That's the foundation, that's the one.
- 2:42Everything after that is wisdom, sharing what you know, and understanding,
- 2:46actually applying it in a real deal.
- 2:48And once you get that equity, the real strategist move is what you do with it next.
- 2:54Don't just let it sit in your personal name - talk to a lawyer about holding it in a
- 2:58trust or an LLC, same way you'd want your publishing catalog held.
- 3:03That's how a hundred million dollar payout turns into something your kids are still
- 3:08living off of, instead of a number that disappears in five years.
- 3:12That's the whole point of the culture shifting from flexing the check to flexing the
- 3:16ownership stake.
- 3:18An endorsement ends when the money clears.
- 3:20Equity keeps paying, keeps compounding, and it's something you can actually pass
- 3:25down or sell later on your own terms.
- 3:28Build instead of just taking the bag.
- 3:30That's Clone Wars for today - appreciate y'all riding with us,
- 3:33we'll get into the next one soon.
