- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke. I'm your host,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Colleen Wit and today we have world famous DJ Charisma
- 0:07Speaker 1: in the building. From Power one on six, she quickly
- 0:11Speaker 1: rose to celebrity DJ status and was named three times
- 0:15Speaker 1: Female DJ of the Year. In addition to her DJ skills,
- 0:18Speaker 1: she has released hit records with Chris Brown, Tory, Lanes, Deslow,
- 0:22Speaker 1: just to name a few. What do you have us
- 0:24Speaker 1: cooking today? Dj? Charisma? While I come from Southern California,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Santana to be exact, and Mexican household, and we always
- 0:32Speaker 1: have tortillas on hand. So I'm gonna show you how
- 0:34Speaker 1: to whip up three cool little dishes with the tortillas today. Yeah,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and what are your ingredients? We got one of them
- 0:43Speaker 1: is gonna's gonna be straight up tortillas and butter than
- 0:45Speaker 1: we got. You know, if you're really lucky, you got
- 0:46Speaker 1: some cheese at the house, We're gonna do that, and
- 0:49Speaker 1: then we're gonna whip up a little dessert with the
- 0:51Speaker 1: sugar in the cinnamon. Wow. Okay, so if you're really
- 0:54Speaker 1: really down on your luck, you have your tortillas. And
- 0:57Speaker 1: I'm excited to see how tortillas and butters turn out,
- 1:00Speaker 1: So go ahead, let's get started. And I just want
- 1:03Speaker 1: to know what was the last time you ate this?
- 1:05Speaker 1: I mean probably just the other night. Like I taught
- 1:07Speaker 1: my daughter how to make it. This is something real
- 1:09Speaker 1: simple that like a kid can make, so like if
- 1:11Speaker 1: you're nine home alone and your parents are at work
- 1:14Speaker 1: type of deal. That's really where I started, you know,
- 1:16Speaker 1: making this dish, right, and this this dish, like you know,
- 1:20Speaker 1: I don't I don't really know the difference between flower
- 1:23Speaker 1: and quarantinias. Hate to hate to be that person from
- 1:26Speaker 1: New York y'all um, but I noticed the price point,
- 1:30Speaker 1: Like you know, I shopped for the show, so I
- 1:32Speaker 1: like look at the prices and I think I paid
- 1:36Speaker 1: five bucks and it was like a million flower tortillas
- 1:39Speaker 1: in that bag that could last you quite quite a while. Definitely,
- 1:43Speaker 1: I feel like growing up like that was one thing
- 1:45Speaker 1: we really always had in the fridge, was the tortilla.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So that's you know why this is definitely my dish
- 1:51Speaker 1: because my mama always had those on deck. So let's
- 1:54Speaker 1: try the flower and butter tortillas, all right, So the
- 1:56Speaker 1: flower and butter is, like I said, if you really
- 1:59Speaker 1: you know, that's all you got you get home from school,
- 2:01Speaker 1: Mom and dad aren't there. You need to whip something up.
- 2:03Speaker 1: You go on the fridge and there's nothing there. So
- 2:05Speaker 1: you got tortillas. Go ahead, and so the first one's
- 2:09Speaker 1: real simple. You just get a flower tortilla, put it on.
- 2:13Speaker 1: You don't even need butter on the pan. We're gonna
- 2:15Speaker 1: put the butter on right now. I know it's an
- 2:17Speaker 1: electric skillet. Usually I would have done this with the
- 2:20Speaker 1: flame skillet. It's a lot easier to toss your tortilla
- 2:23Speaker 1: on there, you know. But if you got an electric skill,
- 2:26Speaker 1: we're gonna do it this way. Oh you mean you
- 2:29Speaker 1: would put the tortilla on directly on the flame, directly
- 2:31Speaker 1: on the flame. He did tortilla first, both sides, heat
- 2:35Speaker 1: it up, and then put your butter on, rolling into
- 2:37Speaker 1: a roll and that's it. Okay, I want to see it.
- 2:40Speaker 1: That's it. So we're gonna try it with this electric skillet.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Would that be considered like but with the difference, Oh,
- 2:46Speaker 1: it's okay, it's it's hot enough, we're good. Okay, we're good.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Sea it's bubbling up. Yeah like that. I mean, you
- 2:52Speaker 1: can't use corn. There were times I use corn tortillas,
- 2:56Speaker 1: but the preference was always flower for me and my
- 2:59Speaker 1: sister growing up. The taste or yeah, it tasted better,
- 3:03Speaker 1: just tasted better. I feel like quarantin teas are better
- 3:06Speaker 1: for other street tacos and good. Okay, so this is
- 3:10Speaker 1: he know when it took two seconds? Two seconds because
- 3:12Speaker 1: I like a little bit of crispiness. That's what you need,
- 3:15Speaker 1: the crispiness. Like that's why I like the flame definitely.
- 3:17Speaker 1: So but this is good. This is good se same night.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Now you're gonna be electric, lover. Get to heat it up.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And you know, like we said, this is definitely a
- 3:25Speaker 1: broke meal. So you know, when you're a kid, your
- 3:29Speaker 1: taste buds are a little different. You know when you
- 3:32Speaker 1: were a kid, did you know this was a broke meal?
- 3:34Speaker 1: Or did you know this was bombed? To me? Like
- 3:36Speaker 1: I couldn't wait get to get home and just make
- 3:38Speaker 1: one of these. When I was a little you know, okay, okay,
- 3:40Speaker 1: what was going on? Like what's your home environment when
- 3:43Speaker 1: all this is going on? Definitely I was the older sibling,
- 3:46Speaker 1: so you know, I took care of my little sister
- 3:47Speaker 1: and me and her would go and once my mom
- 3:50Speaker 1: started working when I was like three or four years old.
- 3:52Speaker 1: She never stopped working and neither did my dad, so
- 3:55Speaker 1: they were always at work and we were always alone
- 3:57Speaker 1: a lot of times. So this is what we will
- 3:59Speaker 1: come home and what we do. And how old were
- 4:02Speaker 1: you when you were making the like nine? That's why
- 4:04Speaker 1: I said, this is really simple that your kid can
- 4:06Speaker 1: make when they're by themselves. Like, but when she showed us,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you know what, you know what I mean, she showed
- 4:12Speaker 1: us that my daughter is ten and I got her
- 4:15Speaker 1: doing it already too, so it's definitely doable. She's like,
- 4:18Speaker 1: there's nothing even like that there. This one is over seeing. Basically,
- 4:24Speaker 1: if you want, all you gotta do is slap a
- 4:26Speaker 1: little butter in there for yourself, okay, and then rolling
- 4:29Speaker 1: into a roll because I don't know how much butter
- 4:31Speaker 1: you like I was slathering it. Okay. Oh wow, So
- 4:40Speaker 1: all this is going on, you're cooking at home. When
- 4:43Speaker 1: do you desire to become? D J Crais Well, I
- 4:47Speaker 1: grew up in in the Golden era of music, like
- 4:49Speaker 1: I feel like I grew up in the golden era
- 4:51Speaker 1: of radio in the nineties, Like I was a little
- 4:53Speaker 1: kid at that era, and that's when radio was at
- 4:56Speaker 1: its finest. You know. So I always had my radio.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I was always making um, stealing my mom's cassettes, cold
- 5:03Speaker 1: tissue in the top so I can record over whatever
- 5:07Speaker 1: she had on there. Remember how you used to do that.
- 5:09Speaker 1: You know you can stick tissue in the time. You
- 5:11Speaker 1: had to put taper tissue on the top to block
- 5:13Speaker 1: a cassette so you could rerecord over it. Oh no,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I was popping in there and make my own mixtapes. Yeah,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I remember recording off the radio, but I didn't do
- 5:21Speaker 1: that part. That was like next level ingenuity, right, Yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 1: because you know, I didn't have no money to go
- 5:25Speaker 1: get the blanks, you know what I mean. So I
- 5:27Speaker 1: would just take my mom's tape and would she what
- 5:29Speaker 1: would she say, like if she would be really mad
- 5:32Speaker 1: depending on what it was. So I was careful of
- 5:34Speaker 1: what cassette I chose. Don't be burning your parents stuff.
- 5:38Speaker 1: But yeah, so I would do that. And so that's
- 5:42Speaker 1: how I really gathered it on. The whole thing. Is
- 5:44Speaker 1: that's how you do it? Yeah, and then just go
- 5:45Speaker 1: ahead and roll it on up. I roll it like
- 5:47Speaker 1: a taketo, roll it like a taketo. I feel like
- 5:52Speaker 1: by the end of the season, I am going to
- 5:53Speaker 1: be fully prepared to handle tortillas. See, I would always
- 5:58Speaker 1: give it that little folder so I don't drip all
- 6:00Speaker 1: over me. I did it, no, no worries. Oh that's smart.
- 6:05Speaker 1: That's there you go, and there you go. You got
- 6:07Speaker 1: your little butter takido and you're hungry you get home
- 6:10Speaker 1: from school, just a little snack whom it will work
- 6:16Speaker 1: right when you're hungry and feels the stomach for sure.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Now have you found other stuff, like random stuff in
- 6:23Speaker 1: your freads? You just throw it in there so it
- 6:25Speaker 1: got good. If you had like some leftover salsa from grandpa,
- 6:29Speaker 1: My grandpa used to make homemade salsa, green salsa. If
- 6:33Speaker 1: you got lucky, you have some sour cream, maybe he
- 6:35Speaker 1: would just dip it in whatever your flavor of dip is.
- 6:38Speaker 1: You know, ironically, I wish I had just grown up.
- 6:42Speaker 1: It works, It surely works. And how we get down
- 6:44Speaker 1: in the Mexican house. You doesn't have to salt a
- 6:46Speaker 1: pepper on it the butter, does it? Now? Did you
- 6:49Speaker 1: have real butter or margarine? Do you know? Um? Whatever
- 6:53Speaker 1: mama had, I don't know, because you don't need pepper
- 6:56Speaker 1: at all. This is delicious. Two seconds to make, two
- 7:01Speaker 1: seconds easy for your kids to make. All right, let's
- 7:06Speaker 1: do it this thing now, let's see, because normally I
- 7:08Speaker 1: would have a fire. If you got real lucky, you
- 7:11Speaker 1: put a little cheese in it, and you got your
- 7:13Speaker 1: good old classic kids of here. No, your passion for
- 7:18Speaker 1: music is going on all while you're young. You're burning tapes.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Where does it take the next pivotal turn before you
- 7:24Speaker 1: become DJ? Who? Isma? Well, I mean in high school
- 7:28Speaker 1: I used to program all the the when the varsity
- 7:32Speaker 1: basketball team would run out, I used to sit back
- 7:35Speaker 1: there and control the speaker and handle all that kind
- 7:37Speaker 1: of stuff. So that's how I knew I was really
- 7:39Speaker 1: interested in it, you know, like volunteered to do that. Yeah. Well,
- 7:42Speaker 1: I was on the basketball team. I played ball, so
- 7:44Speaker 1: I was always really like, man, we need music, we
- 7:46Speaker 1: need some park while we run out, you know, so
- 7:49Speaker 1: I would. I really got into that, and the coach
- 7:51Speaker 1: let me do it. He showed me the speaker and
- 7:53Speaker 1: I taught myself how to use it. It It was this
- 7:55Speaker 1: massive p a and then from there I just kind
- 7:57Speaker 1: of learned. And there wasn't too many dj is at
- 8:00Speaker 1: my school. M hm. So next time you put butter
- 8:05Speaker 1: on it, huh. Yeah, this time, we're doing okay, all right,
- 8:11Speaker 1: So you you start to peep that there's no DJs.
- 8:14Speaker 1: There's not a lot of DJs. But I hear him
- 8:16Speaker 1: on the radio and I see him, so I started.
- 8:17Speaker 1: You know, this was the MTV era, you know, b
- 8:20Speaker 1: et the basement. I was sold in love with hip hop,
- 8:23Speaker 1: the culture of hip hop and R and B. Like,
- 8:25Speaker 1: I was just in love with it. So I just
- 8:28Speaker 1: wanted to do more. And I was like, man, there's DJs.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And growing up there was only one female DJ I knew,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and that was Spinderella. Oh it wasn't you from like
- 8:37Speaker 1: Salt Peppers, but she was, you know, she was an
- 8:40Speaker 1: artist DJ. As far as like real club DJs and
- 8:43Speaker 1: radio DJs, I didn't know any So did you desire
- 8:49Speaker 1: to fill that void? Yeah? I desired to fill that
- 8:51Speaker 1: void because it was it was all boys and then
- 8:54Speaker 1: growing up too like it was that same thing, that competition.
- 8:58Speaker 1: All the boys that did have of the turntables didn't
- 9:01Speaker 1: want to let me try it or do any of that.
- 9:04Speaker 1: So I went and I saved up all my money
- 9:06Speaker 1: mode lawns, wash cars, saved up all my bread and
- 9:09Speaker 1: bought my first creative records, my first turntable, and it
- 9:13Speaker 1: started teaching myself. You know, how did you know to
- 9:16Speaker 1: do that? To go out in mo lawns and wash
- 9:18Speaker 1: cars like I was just hustler. Did you proparach your mom?
- 9:21Speaker 1: Like mom, one day's equipment, she says no, and then
- 9:24Speaker 1: you go out and hustle. Or you just said no,
- 9:26Speaker 1: mom and dad's at work, I need these turntables. Mom
- 9:29Speaker 1: and dad's at work. Like I learned early on, don't
- 9:32Speaker 1: ask them for nothing, because healthy were gonna say no.
- 9:35Speaker 1: They were gonna say no. Even when it came to
- 9:37Speaker 1: like high school and my my, the things that you
- 9:40Speaker 1: typically get in high school, like the prom and the
- 9:44Speaker 1: in the letterman jackets and all that stuff, I had
- 9:46Speaker 1: to get it myself. So so becoming an entrepreneur was
- 9:49Speaker 1: like second, Yeah, it was like you had to do it.
- 9:51Speaker 1: You know, my mom and dad worked, so they showed
- 9:53Speaker 1: me they worked, so I had to do the same.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Can we turn this down? This thing? These electric skillets
- 9:59Speaker 1: ain't no Jo turned your boy up on her? So
- 10:02Speaker 1: natural instinct you naturally and instinctually you just went to, Okay,
- 10:07Speaker 1: I'm gonna hustle up my own stuff, so you door knock. Yeah,
- 10:10Speaker 1: all my neighbors knew me and stuff, So I just
- 10:12Speaker 1: got to hustling. Started working at fifteen years old, Soult shoes.
- 10:15Speaker 1: I worked at the athletes Foot. I worked there for
- 10:17Speaker 1: eight years straight, became the manager. Just I was a hustler,
- 10:21Speaker 1: saved up my bread and every night and every weekend,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I would do any house party I could do, Like
- 10:25Speaker 1: I DJed on washers and dryers upside down, trash cans before,
- 10:30Speaker 1: like anything to get the job done. It didn't matter
- 10:32Speaker 1: how much you were getting paid or did you do it,
- 10:34Speaker 1: because I did it in the beginning, I just did it,
- 10:37Speaker 1: did it, did it? And the money eventually came, you know,
- 10:39Speaker 1: with the years of once it became a professional thing,
- 10:42Speaker 1: the money started coming in. So when would you have said,
- 10:45Speaker 1: like when did you I guess how long did it
- 10:48Speaker 1: take for you to go from doing it for free
- 10:50Speaker 1: to actually like making money? Um, the money came kind
- 10:55Speaker 1: of quick because you know, weddings and house parties those
- 11:00Speaker 1: are long events and like they gotta pay you something.
- 11:02Speaker 1: So it came. It came once I started like actually
- 11:05Speaker 1: getting good and I knew the music. It came within
- 11:07Speaker 1: a year or two, A little bit of money, a
- 11:09Speaker 1: little bit, a little bit did you have to did
- 11:11Speaker 1: you were you always able to do hip hop music
- 11:13Speaker 1: or did you have to do what? Oh? No, It
- 11:15Speaker 1: took a long time for me to get to where
- 11:18Speaker 1: I wanted to, and that's in the world of hip hop.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Like I had to play because I came from southern
- 11:23Speaker 1: California where the the Hispanic population is massive it dominates,
- 11:29Speaker 1: So I had to know how to play all the
- 11:30Speaker 1: Spanish music, all the seventies funk, old school, that's like
- 11:34Speaker 1: where I started. I couldn't wait until I could be
- 11:36Speaker 1: able to do a full party and play hip hop like.
- 11:39Speaker 1: That was my goal, you know what I mean, I
- 11:41Speaker 1: really had to When did you have every papish like
- 11:43Speaker 1: what was that? Do you remember your first time actually
- 11:46Speaker 1: being able to like play hip hop? I mean certain
- 11:49Speaker 1: like parties is depending on who booked me. But it
- 11:52Speaker 1: got really good when I finally broke into l A
- 11:55Speaker 1: and got on the street team and did my first club.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Like once I got into the world, I was able
- 12:00Speaker 1: to start Okay, this is it right here, and this
- 12:02Speaker 1: is when I knew, okay, I'm gonna do this. And
- 12:04Speaker 1: I had three day jobs. I worked at That's how
- 12:07Speaker 1: I am right now. I worked at I worked at
- 12:10Speaker 1: a Chicago title in the daytime, I worked at home
- 12:13Speaker 1: depot at night, and then I worked at Coca Cola
- 12:15Speaker 1: in the graveyard, you know. And then on the weekends
- 12:18Speaker 1: where you working to like pay bills and pursue your
- 12:21Speaker 1: dreams or where you like, why were you working so much? Yeah,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I lived on my own since I was seventeen. I
- 12:26Speaker 1: moved out at seventeen, you know, and just I was
- 12:29Speaker 1: just a hustler and just had to pay bills. Never
- 12:31Speaker 1: I didn't like to ask my parents for nothing. I
- 12:33Speaker 1: wanted to always take care of them because they worked
- 12:35Speaker 1: so hard the whole lives. They still worked to this
- 12:37Speaker 1: day and I'm still trying to make it so they
- 12:39Speaker 1: don't gotta work no more. But yeah, I just hustling.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And then, uh, I knew it was real when I
- 12:45Speaker 1: got hired at the Street Team at Power one oh six,
- 12:48Speaker 1: And that's when I officially quit my day jobs and
- 12:50Speaker 1: I just took this. But the Street team didn't doesn't
- 12:53Speaker 1: really pay them nothing. So yeah, right back to eating this,
- 12:57Speaker 1: right back to eating this kind of stuff. When I
- 12:59Speaker 1: started do, when I when I made myself full time
- 13:02Speaker 1: and you were willing to actually take a pay cut. Yeah,
- 13:05Speaker 1: because I just really was so passionate about it. I
- 13:07Speaker 1: don't know where the passion came from, but the passion came.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Didn't You have to give up some of your lifestyle
- 13:14Speaker 1: to to to do that? Well, I was never a
- 13:17Speaker 1: flashy person, thank god. So were you like living in
- 13:20Speaker 1: my roommates because that's a big pay cut. Yeah, I
- 13:23Speaker 1: had roommates. Definitely had roommates throughout the years and all
- 13:25Speaker 1: that good stuff? You know? Did you have to explain?
- 13:27Speaker 1: And I'm a little I'm a hustler like and plus
- 13:29Speaker 1: you learn on street teams, you learn how to like
- 13:32Speaker 1: talk to people in trade. I'm a great trader, barter
- 13:36Speaker 1: some ship. That's how I am. Like, I can just
- 13:39Speaker 1: give you, I'll get you these, you give me those
- 13:40Speaker 1: like I did a lot of that coming from a
- 13:42Speaker 1: lot of that. I like that. Yeah, I know people
- 13:45Speaker 1: that started on the street team level from d from
- 13:47Speaker 1: djaying to go onto street team level. It's a lot
- 13:50Speaker 1: of work. You think this work, I want we can.
- 13:53Speaker 1: We're gonna try this because electric Skillet. I No, I'm scared.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I'm scared by the way this is, sir right now.
- 14:01Speaker 1: So this is just a simple kiss of thea you know,
- 14:03Speaker 1: if you if you're really on a good day, you
- 14:05Speaker 1: got cheese in the fridge, Like that's such a good thing.
- 14:09Speaker 1: So you get your cheese and you sprinkle it on
- 14:11Speaker 1: some butter and you just roll it up same way,
- 14:14Speaker 1: folded however you want to do it. This thing was
- 14:15Speaker 1: really hot, so I didn't want to fold it roll it,
- 14:18Speaker 1: so we folded it. And that's the second meal you
- 14:20Speaker 1: can make. And like the same thing if you got
- 14:22Speaker 1: some chili, guacamole, anything dipping into make it not so dry,
- 14:25Speaker 1: and you know it work for you and kids taste
- 14:29Speaker 1: bloods are really simple, so this kind of stuff always,
- 14:31Speaker 1: you know, you know our kids are I'm a grown
- 14:33Speaker 1: up and I think this is awesome. Um now I
- 14:37Speaker 1: have to have guacamola and SALTSA I can't, No, I can't.
- 14:41Speaker 1: I need I need that spice. Well, guys, just for
- 14:44Speaker 1: you listeners, I need the whole in butter. Like it
- 14:48Speaker 1: was nothing simple, so simple, and it was delicious and
- 14:50Speaker 1: she didn't need some on pepper. She also just made
- 14:53Speaker 1: the cheese case of dia. So now you guys are
- 14:56Speaker 1: probably thinking I'm fat at home, but I'm really not
- 14:59Speaker 1: that big. The dessert should be easy. This should be simple. Yeah,
- 15:02Speaker 1: this is perfect, shredded cheese and tortilla. This is case
- 15:05Speaker 1: of deal. You know, working three jobs, I ain't got
- 15:07Speaker 1: no time come home real quick. I continue to eat
- 15:11Speaker 1: these meals throughout. You know, I never went to fancy restaurants.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Always assume you never ate a TV dinner. They're gross.
- 15:19Speaker 1: I think TV dinners are pretty gross. I used to
- 15:21Speaker 1: live on TV dinners. M hm. You know what. My
- 15:27Speaker 1: mom always had hot pockets kinda kinda did you eat
- 15:32Speaker 1: those a lot? I ate some hot pockets, Yeah, I
- 15:34Speaker 1: definitely remember hot pockets. These are fashion in hot pockets. Okay,
- 15:37Speaker 1: so this is the dessert. This is like the easy part.
- 15:40Speaker 1: It's eating everything. Put a little butter on there, and
- 15:43Speaker 1: then sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon and a little
- 15:46Speaker 1: bit of sugar, and it's like a a hood churl.
- 15:51Speaker 1: If you ain't got the deep fried churls. If you're
- 15:53Speaker 1: a kid, you don't want to do all that, all right?
- 16:00Speaker 1: Can you sprinkle a little sugar, a little cinnamon, roll
- 16:02Speaker 1: that thing up. Okay, cinnamon and sugar. My first. Now
- 16:08Speaker 1: I've had a case of dia. I've never had a
- 16:11Speaker 1: butter tortilla roll and I've never had the cinnamon, and
- 16:16Speaker 1: I hope I'm not jacking this up. Here he goes,
- 16:18Speaker 1: that's just like that cinnamon, butter cinnamon, and then he's
- 16:22Speaker 1: that spoon. There you go, Here we go, here we go.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Let's see if it's I'm probably messing this up. Guys,
- 16:28Speaker 1: there you go. Okay, you don't think alright? Sold the
- 16:33Speaker 1: folding and so it don't drip because you know a
- 16:34Speaker 1: little kids running around like that folds your in and
- 16:37Speaker 1: then roll it and then roll it. Now, let's see
- 16:40Speaker 1: homemade version of a churl. Let's see if it's really
- 16:44Speaker 1: tastes like a churl. It tastes like it tastes like
- 16:51Speaker 1: a tortilla with butter, tastes like a tortillo with butter,
- 16:55Speaker 1: cinnamon and sugar. But if you like the flavor of
- 16:59Speaker 1: the you know, the cinnamon and tuggar, I guess, dude,
- 17:02Speaker 1: I just realized just now that a churl is centament
- 17:04Speaker 1: and trigger, but it still has a tortilla doesn't have.
- 17:08Speaker 1: This is good though. Honestly, this is girlfriending. You know,
- 17:12Speaker 1: I think your kids would like that. I wouldn't have
- 17:16Speaker 1: to do that ever, tried to on a date with
- 17:18Speaker 1: a girl like I got an appetizer, I got the meal,
- 17:22Speaker 1: and I have the dessert. I got you. I got
- 17:24Speaker 1: you right now, girl, just basically what you just did. Yeah,
- 17:27Speaker 1: you know, depending on if you like cinnamon sugar, I
- 17:30Speaker 1: feel like there would always be a gigantic bottle of
- 17:32Speaker 1: cinnamon just for months, right, or to be in there
- 17:35Speaker 1: for years, so you don't have to count on having
- 17:37Speaker 1: cinnamon or sugar or something random. I love that this
- 17:41Speaker 1: meal is affordable and no matter what age you are,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you can make it. They'll flow you up. It takes
- 17:45Speaker 1: two seconds to make. Yeah, you just fold it, roll it.
- 17:49Speaker 1: What shall we name this? And you can run off
- 17:51Speaker 1: the practice or whatever you needed to do. What should
- 17:53Speaker 1: we name this tortilla with the cinnamon and sugar? What
- 17:56Speaker 1: do we call it? It's good, I'm not gonna I'm
- 17:59Speaker 1: gonna eat all years. That's pretty good right there. Mm hmmm.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Have you shown your daughter how to make this? I've
- 18:06Speaker 1: shown her how to make all this? Yes, what are
- 18:09Speaker 1: you gonna name this for the cookbook? But the cookbook
- 18:14Speaker 1: m charismas cinnamon charismas centnamon to stick tortilla sticks. Yeah,
- 18:21Speaker 1: we gotta work on it. Where you come out, We
- 18:24Speaker 1: need your help. We need some help so we could
- 18:28Speaker 1: turn off the stove. Because you basically cooked our appetizer,
- 18:31Speaker 1: meal and dessert. We actually did it on an electric stove.
- 18:33Speaker 1: I was worried. We did it, so shout out if
- 18:36Speaker 1: you got electric stove as possible. It is possible. And
- 18:40Speaker 1: now I know that if I have tortillas in my house,
- 18:42Speaker 1: I'll never started it at boom, I'm literally gonna start
- 18:45Speaker 1: having to our days in my house. Shek They're good,
- 18:49Speaker 1: they last, they last long, They're super easy to looks
- 18:52Speaker 1: A whole dish right there is right there. We got
- 18:55Speaker 1: the dessert, we got the main course, We've got the appetizer.
- 18:59Speaker 1: You know what I mean. Easy, peasy easy, So come
- 19:03Speaker 1: over here and sit with me. So you go from
- 19:08Speaker 1: working three day jobs in corporate America, so saying I
- 19:11Speaker 1: want to put these jobs and pursue being a street
- 19:15Speaker 1: Uh what do you call it? A street, um ambassador?
- 19:18Speaker 1: I would say street working on the street team, working
- 19:21Speaker 1: on the street team for Power one or six eight.
- 19:25Speaker 1: So like I had no kids, you know what I mean?
- 19:29Speaker 1: I was like, you know I had I knew what
- 19:31Speaker 1: I was capable if I put my mind to it.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I was like, let me just do it, and that
- 19:35Speaker 1: voice just spoke to me, and I did it and
- 19:37Speaker 1: fill that voice. Did you feel like there was good
- 19:39Speaker 1: potentially gonna be uh like uh like a rainbow at
- 19:44Speaker 1: the end of the journey or something, or did you
- 19:46Speaker 1: just like doing it like you had you tried it
- 19:48Speaker 1: at least it did part time and then you did
- 19:50Speaker 1: the transition like I just already well, I mean I
- 19:53Speaker 1: was doing it for a couple of weeks, and I
- 19:54Speaker 1: knew because it was hard going from Santa and all
- 19:56Speaker 1: the way to Bourbank, California, to the Media City where
- 20:00Speaker 1: all the radio stations in L A. R And all
- 20:02Speaker 1: that good stuff. So I was like, I can't do
- 20:04Speaker 1: this to quit my day jobs and come out here
- 20:08Speaker 1: and just go for it. Wow. And so you're on
- 20:11Speaker 1: the street team, You're working crazy hours, i'd assume, And
- 20:15Speaker 1: what is power one all six? Are they noticing that
- 20:17Speaker 1: you have these other skill sets at this point? Yeah, definitely.
- 20:20Speaker 1: And the crazy thing is like remember ninety two point
- 20:23Speaker 1: three the beat. In fact, I like applied to both
- 20:26Speaker 1: of them for years, and for both of them, I
- 20:29Speaker 1: got rejection letters that I saved to this day. So
- 20:32Speaker 1: it took me years before I finally got hired and
- 20:34Speaker 1: you were just applying for street team level and they
- 20:37Speaker 1: what do you think that was? Do you think it
- 20:39Speaker 1: was because I had to I mean back then, this woman, Dad,
- 20:42Speaker 1: I'm a woman. I'm not your with the men in
- 20:46Speaker 1: the industry like type of woman. Real you know, you
- 20:48Speaker 1: don't see me and a Leo. It's hard or nothing
- 20:50Speaker 1: like I'm one of the tomboys, you know, So I'm
- 20:52Speaker 1: definitely wasn't anything they were used to. But did they
- 20:55Speaker 1: actually interview you before they rejected you? Or did they
- 20:58Speaker 1: see your resume come in and then reject you resumes?
- 21:00Speaker 1: I did get an Inverury one time at ninety two
- 21:03Speaker 1: point three. I'll never forget that, and uh yeah, I
- 21:06Speaker 1: didn't get the job after that, but it was just,
- 21:07Speaker 1: you know, kept trying to forget that because it was
- 21:12Speaker 1: I actually went in there, and I'll never forget the
- 21:13Speaker 1: question that guy asked me. He's like, what would you
- 21:15Speaker 1: do right now if you saw D'Angelo and like Maxwell
- 21:17Speaker 1: in the hallway and I go it was like, you
- 21:19Speaker 1: know question, and I wouldn't do anything else. I was
- 21:23Speaker 1: just not, you know, because that's what they want. They
- 21:25Speaker 1: don't want people that are group. He's you know, you
- 21:27Speaker 1: gotta learn to act professional. So that was the one
- 21:30Speaker 1: question that stood out to me. And he asked me
- 21:32Speaker 1: what color is your brain? And I was like, what
- 21:35Speaker 1: color is your brain? I think it's pink. I don't know.
- 21:40Speaker 1: I immediately said blue. Why I don't know? I go,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I feel like my thought process in my aura is blue,
- 21:45Speaker 1: like I don't know what it is water. And he's like,
- 21:47Speaker 1: I love that answer, and he's like, that's the type
- 21:49Speaker 1: of answer I'm looking for when I asked that question.
- 21:51Speaker 1: He's like, when people tell me pink, they think more
- 21:53Speaker 1: like logical, and I'm looking for her creatives. So that
- 21:57Speaker 1: was interesting that he asked, I'll never forget that question.
- 21:59Speaker 1: But he didn't give you the job now, mm hmm.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Though you like my answers, So how did you not
- 22:19Speaker 1: say at that point, like, okay, maybe this is informed
- 22:21Speaker 1: me and you just keep keep applying. I just I
- 22:24Speaker 1: think God forgiving me this blinding like bubbly passion, you
- 22:30Speaker 1: know what I mean in the beginning, because I really
- 22:31Speaker 1: if I didn't have that, I would have never made
- 22:33Speaker 1: it this far. Never, because this industry will eat you up.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Why do you say that, because it's brutal, especially for
- 22:39Speaker 1: a woman. A brown skinned woman, like it's it's tough.
- 22:42Speaker 1: It's really tough. So I'm just glad that he gave
- 22:45Speaker 1: me that those blinders where I had, I had complete
- 22:48Speaker 1: tunnel vision, you like new this is what I wanted.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And it was also a competitive thing, like I'm gonna
- 22:53Speaker 1: really show y'all, like you think I can't do it, Like, okay,
- 22:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna show all, y'all. So you're on the Street Team,
- 22:59Speaker 1: You're doing us for how long? Years? Street Team for
- 23:02Speaker 1: like three or four years, and then I was killing it,
- 23:04Speaker 1: Like I was more popular than a lot of the
- 23:06Speaker 1: on air guys because they have your call in right. No,
- 23:10Speaker 1: we didn't even do that at this time anymore. They
- 23:12Speaker 1: cut that out. By this time in radio was already changing.
- 23:15Speaker 1: And this was when the Internet really came and you
- 23:19Speaker 1: started having the birth of Spotify and all these other platforms.
- 23:23Speaker 1: So radio started changing. So how did you end up
- 23:25Speaker 1: developing that following from Street Team to being outside. I
- 23:28Speaker 1: was everywhere any high school, any college, like I just
- 23:32Speaker 1: you never saw me sleep. I do events from night
- 23:34Speaker 1: to day, didn't matter what kind of event, and really
- 23:37Speaker 1: hustled and I got and I that's how I really
- 23:39Speaker 1: knew what the kids wanted, and I always was tapped
- 23:42Speaker 1: in with what the next level of kids wanted, and
- 23:45Speaker 1: it just happened to be the jerking movement in the
- 23:47Speaker 1: key movement. And I'll never forget. I went to Westminster
- 23:50Speaker 1: High School. We had a basketball game with Power six
- 23:53Speaker 1: versus the School for Fun for charity, and I was like, please,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I begged my boss, please please let the New Boys perform,
- 24:00Speaker 1: like please, just give him one chance. I swear to God,
- 24:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna show you. So he's like, alright, alright, alright, alright,
- 24:06Speaker 1: So he let the New Boys come out do your jerk.
- 24:09Speaker 1: The entire stadium, Like eight d kids swarmed the gymnasium
- 24:13Speaker 1: floor and started jerking, and he just looks at me
- 24:16Speaker 1: like and I was like, I told you, You've been
- 24:19Speaker 1: telling you. And then that's how I actually became on
- 24:23Speaker 1: their DJ that very moment. He let me be on
- 24:25Speaker 1: a because you And it's funny because this has come
- 24:29Speaker 1: up before, and like another interview, people underestimate the power
- 24:33Speaker 1: I think of the high school in the middle school demographic.
- 24:36Speaker 1: The kids truth. They literally if you want to know
- 24:40Speaker 1: if something sucks or as real, and they're searching, they're
- 24:44Speaker 1: literally searching. They're like, I dare you to try and
- 24:46Speaker 1: sell me something, because I'm going to question the hell
- 24:50Speaker 1: out of it. Right, I was that kid? Yeah, I
- 24:53Speaker 1: was like, I got the brand new, unreleased Tupac mixtape,
- 24:56Speaker 1: Volume one. You ain't got it? Like that was me.
- 24:58Speaker 1: So I've always kept that mentality. And I know that
- 25:02Speaker 1: the kids set the trends. So here you decided to
- 25:06Speaker 1: approach your boss and say, take a chance on the
- 25:09Speaker 1: new Boys. Why were you so passionate about it? Where
- 25:12Speaker 1: is it that you really wanted to give the kids
- 25:14Speaker 1: a great event or did you really want to like
- 25:17Speaker 1: show the radio station that they were they weren't really
- 25:20Speaker 1: paying attention to something. I was very passionate about the
- 25:23Speaker 1: culture of hip hop, you know what I mean? And
- 25:25Speaker 1: that was a time I don't know if you remember this,
- 25:27Speaker 1: but R and B changed. They went from R and
- 25:30Speaker 1: B to pop. Yeah, I remember that. And then hip
- 25:32Speaker 1: hop did the same thing and went from hip hop
- 25:34Speaker 1: to pop. And I'm like, this is not hip hop?
- 25:38Speaker 1: Do you blame? This is not hip hop? I just
- 25:40Speaker 1: have to ask you this. Then, I feel like played
- 25:43Speaker 1: a major role in hip hop plant transitioning to popping.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I think it was it was a bunch of things
- 25:49Speaker 1: it went. It started with Pocket Biggie getting murdered and
- 25:53Speaker 1: then the South taking over, and then it just like
- 25:55Speaker 1: was event after event after event, and it changed a lot.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Do you feel like hip hop it's more pop now?
- 26:03Speaker 1: We are pop music? I think because well popular pop
- 26:06Speaker 1: it means popular and hip hop is the number one
- 26:09Speaker 1: genre in the country for like the past three years now,
- 26:13Speaker 1: for three or four years. So officially hip hop is
- 26:16Speaker 1: pop because we are the most popular music. And that
- 26:18Speaker 1: took people fighting for it and sticking up for it,
- 26:20Speaker 1: because it did change. The sound became e d M
- 26:23Speaker 1: and up tempo. So that's why like people like me
- 26:26Speaker 1: and the West Coast and Drew Ski and the and
- 26:28Speaker 1: DJ self in the East Coast and Drama in the South,
- 26:31Speaker 1: we kept it all alive. I really feel that DJs
- 26:33Speaker 1: don't get enough credit because they don't understand what we
- 26:36Speaker 1: were fighting with at the radio stations, like fighting against
- 26:38Speaker 1: the bosses because they wanted the let's just be safe
- 26:42Speaker 1: and play the Bruno Mars and then with listen, we're
- 26:45Speaker 1: not gonna be open to the y g s. Who's
- 26:47Speaker 1: yg no, So it'll be you guys pushing it back. Yeah, back.
- 26:51Speaker 1: It's a lot of pushback and back and forth. Why
- 26:54Speaker 1: do you think that they were the unsung heroes. We
- 26:56Speaker 1: don't get the credit never. DJs do not get the
- 26:58Speaker 1: credit for what they do, especially radio DJs. Now, so
- 27:03Speaker 1: there's street DJs and there's radio DJs. You have a
- 27:06Speaker 1: background in both both. That was my my goal to
- 27:09Speaker 1: I wanted to be able to do all of it. Okay,
- 27:12Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Because there's different kinds of DJs.
- 27:13Speaker 1: There's DJs that are real technical. Back in the day,
- 27:16Speaker 1: they used to have battles. You know, they don't see
- 27:18Speaker 1: that too much anymore. You know. Then you have people
- 27:22Speaker 1: who are just in the industry. Then you have people
- 27:24Speaker 1: who are tapped in with the streets only. And I'm
- 27:26Speaker 1: trying to I want to have it all. I want
- 27:28Speaker 1: to be tapped into the clubs, the youth, the radio, everything,
- 27:31Speaker 1: like I want to be tapped in. So the other
- 27:34Speaker 1: night I was out with I Heart Radio shout out
- 27:36Speaker 1: to y'all because they do. They had Paris Hilton DJ
- 27:43Speaker 1: is set. So I was like, no, I'm curious, Like
- 27:48Speaker 1: I was genuinely like hopeful, Like for some strange reason,
- 27:52Speaker 1: I was really hopeful for her. You know she's been
- 27:54Speaker 1: DJ for years too. Years. Yeah the year says in
- 28:00Speaker 1: like not as long as you, but maybe like what
- 28:02Speaker 1: the last five years years? DJs for years because like
- 28:06Speaker 1: I remember, a girl like me couldn't get booked. Those
- 28:08Speaker 1: were the only type of women that would get booked
- 28:10Speaker 1: in Vegas. To this day, it's still like that. Well,
- 28:13Speaker 1: I still can't get booked in Las Vegas, like they
- 28:15Speaker 1: only book I don't even know if they're really DJ,
- 28:18Speaker 1: and I think someone made it for him and they're
- 28:20Speaker 1: just pushing it. Yeah. I've actually had tours and the
- 28:27Speaker 1: they weren't really DJ. But now Paris Hilton did her set.
- 28:31Speaker 1: If I had to rate it on like a one
- 28:33Speaker 1: to ten, I probably would have rated it at like
- 28:36Speaker 1: a two. And I don't know if it's because I'm
- 28:40Speaker 1: such a hip hop head or like I was just
- 28:42Speaker 1: so hopeful for her and then like her, you know,
- 28:44Speaker 1: I feel like the first track you drop is like
- 28:48Speaker 1: it's gonna make or break you, you know what I'm saying.
- 28:50Speaker 1: And I think she went for like maybe E d
- 28:52Speaker 1: M or something. But I was hopeful, man, I was,
- 28:56Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Most female DJs are E
- 28:58Speaker 1: d M DJs as said, I don't have too many.
- 29:01Speaker 1: I really didn't have no one to look up to
- 29:03Speaker 1: outside of Spinderella. Did you did you give you her
- 29:06Speaker 1: ap parents ELTs on set? I've seen clips of them,
- 29:10Speaker 1: so I already know what it is. You know, I
- 29:12Speaker 1: get it, de rate it? What would you rate it? Though?
- 29:14Speaker 1: I mean, that's E D M. I'm not okay, So
- 29:16Speaker 1: I'm so it's not fair to rate it because it's
- 29:17Speaker 1: adi um. So I'm telling like, try if you're a
- 29:20Speaker 1: DJ out there and you've never mixed medium, tried it.
- 29:22Speaker 1: It's easy as can be. Just it all rolls together.
- 29:26Speaker 1: There's no lyrics, really simple. So hip hop's a little
- 29:31Speaker 1: more challenging. Reggae and Spanish is a way more challenging
- 29:35Speaker 1: if you're ask me. But so you become a radio
- 29:38Speaker 1: DJ after the New Boys even by the way, shout
- 29:40Speaker 1: out to the New Boys, I love them. That was
- 29:43Speaker 1: Actually they're one of the first people that I had, Like,
- 29:46Speaker 1: what do you call it? When he smoked weed, car
- 29:48Speaker 1: fills up? Hot box? Hot box you j J? Hot
- 29:54Speaker 1: box me shout out J. Yeah, he hot boxed me.
- 29:58Speaker 1: I think I was like sad about a breakup and
- 30:01Speaker 1: he was like, you know, he was signing Nick Cannon
- 30:03Speaker 1: and they were all doing that whole thing in He
- 30:06Speaker 1: was like, oh, you just come to the back and
- 30:08Speaker 1: I get in the car, and boy, I mean, your
- 30:12Speaker 1: eyes was burdening. It was impossible not to get high.
- 30:14Speaker 1: I think that was the first real time I got high,
- 30:17Speaker 1: and then it would have been perfect. Right after and
- 30:20Speaker 1: I think I had another incident with them where I
- 30:23Speaker 1: don't even remember, but it had involved weed. Yeah, but
- 30:26Speaker 1: they were great, and I was kind of sad to
- 30:28Speaker 1: see the breakup of them. It was like, work it out,
- 30:30Speaker 1: work it out, work it out. A lot of these
- 30:32Speaker 1: groups they couldn't work it out. It was, you know,
- 30:36Speaker 1: so you become this huge radio DJ. But it was
- 30:40Speaker 1: it was it a smooth transition, Like what was that transition?
- 30:43Speaker 1: Like it happened fast once they let me in the
- 30:47Speaker 1: doors and put me on. It was fast because all
- 30:50Speaker 1: of a sudden, I started coming out, all right, here's
- 30:53Speaker 1: new boys, meet yg Meat Mustard and Ty Dollars sign
- 30:56Speaker 1: here you go, and they were the next one's boom
- 30:58Speaker 1: and then it was teach me how to cat Daddy.
- 31:01Speaker 1: And I also was in the bay. Here's the heartbreaking
- 31:03Speaker 1: I am too stage Gemini, all these cats, one after another,
- 31:07Speaker 1: one after another, one after another. Now did you know
- 31:09Speaker 1: these artists? Or I just you hit him up on
- 31:13Speaker 1: my Space back in the day Facebook shout out to
- 31:16Speaker 1: my Space and just reached out. I was never scared
- 31:18Speaker 1: to reach out. I was really hungry and passionate and
- 31:20Speaker 1: I just did it. Yeah. Like I said, I had
- 31:22Speaker 1: tunnel vision. I was really blind to what people were
- 31:24Speaker 1: saying or anything. I just did it. That's how I
- 31:27Speaker 1: got DJ Charisma. I emailed her, I called some close acquaintances,
- 31:31Speaker 1: and then eventually I landed in the d M. We
- 31:33Speaker 1: here and we here, And because she wasn't initially really
- 31:37Speaker 1: responded to the DM. Just so ya know, I had
- 31:40Speaker 1: like inside a friend do a group d M, and
- 31:44Speaker 1: I was like, oh, this is gonna do it. And
- 31:45Speaker 1: it worked. So give me all my d ms ladies.
- 31:48Speaker 1: And for some reason, my DM is broken into three categories.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Oh I know there's like one where why did they
- 31:55Speaker 1: put these? The other day I went in there and
- 31:57Speaker 1: like Trino was in there, like what she send me
- 32:00Speaker 1: a message three years ago? Like what is this? So
- 32:04Speaker 1: I apologize, I'm gonna get better at it. Yeah. I
- 32:06Speaker 1: don't know why it does that because I did notice
- 32:08Speaker 1: I'll miss d ms and it goes into like that
- 32:10Speaker 1: third little bucket. But I don't know if you have
- 32:12Speaker 1: to follow them to get it to not. I do
- 32:15Speaker 1: follow some of them, so I don't. I'm trying to
- 32:16Speaker 1: figure it out. Instagram, Yeah, Instagram is tough, but hey,
- 32:19Speaker 1: you know what, we finally got DJ Charisma and then
- 32:22Speaker 1: like made my day. I was like, yes, I got her,
- 32:24Speaker 1: I got her, and then I was demon her. You
- 32:26Speaker 1: got the email, You're gonna be there, you gonna come from.
- 32:29Speaker 1: But being a radio DJ is tough. And then like
- 32:32Speaker 1: eating while broke is something you're gonna have to do
- 32:34Speaker 1: if you want to get into the radio game. Yes,
- 32:37Speaker 1: so you go from street to mainstream. People are now
- 32:41Speaker 1: listening to your advice. There's no competitive there's no I
- 32:44Speaker 1: don't know because there's tons of competitive business. But it's
- 32:47Speaker 1: always just keep it going. Okay, the competitives never stopped.
- 32:50Speaker 1: It still goes on in this day. Okay. So too,
- 32:54Speaker 1: in addition to the radio, you're doing side gigs. You're
- 32:56Speaker 1: blowing up. I'm sure your fee is going up. Your
- 33:00Speaker 1: now the feast stayed the same, you know, you know,
- 33:01Speaker 1: it's harder. I'm really trying to fight for equal pay
- 33:04Speaker 1: for women, especially in the radio industry. It's mind blowing
- 33:07Speaker 1: the difference. It's like a fourth of what the men's make.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Just what it is. That's why I personally quit both
- 33:15Speaker 1: radio stations and walked away from radio because it was
- 33:18Speaker 1: just mind blowing to me how big of a gap
- 33:22Speaker 1: there wasn't the pay difference, but my name was just
- 33:24Speaker 1: as massive and way bigger than most of them. And
- 33:27Speaker 1: then other guy DJs were like, Yo, this is what
- 33:29Speaker 1: I'm getting paid, and you just me, just me, they
- 33:32Speaker 1: no one ever told me like. It was just me
- 33:34Speaker 1: figuring things out, you know, because I had a couple
- 33:37Speaker 1: of office spots here and there where I was able to,
- 33:40Speaker 1: damn you make they're making this, they're making what all right?
- 33:45Speaker 1: I need? I need? I need at least a fifth
- 33:47Speaker 1: of that or something, because I was making like a
- 33:49Speaker 1: fraction of what they make. So that's why I left
- 33:52Speaker 1: Power one of six and went to my heart. And
- 33:54Speaker 1: you know, my heart was a tabit better. But once
- 33:57Speaker 1: I figured out the inside workings, I blown away. I'm
- 34:00Speaker 1: still only making a fourth of what these men are making,
- 34:04Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So that's why I ended
- 34:05Speaker 1: up walking away from my heart and then just started
- 34:09Speaker 1: getting into programming for all these tech companies because there's
- 34:11Speaker 1: so many options now a DJ, we could go to
- 34:14Speaker 1: Spotify and program these massive playlists, and it's kind of
- 34:17Speaker 1: the same thing. So you go, you mean, so you'd
- 34:20Speaker 1: work for a spot up, Well, you don't work for Spotify,
- 34:22Speaker 1: but I guess you get a contract and then you
- 34:24Speaker 1: program a playlist, which multiple they're they're like stations playlist.
- 34:28Speaker 1: But that's how you're basically supplementing the income that you're
- 34:32Speaker 1: really supposed to be making. And begin with how is
- 34:35Speaker 1: this still possible? In two thousand and twenty one, though,
- 34:40Speaker 1: coming back to I ended up coming back to radio
- 34:42Speaker 1: just because I'm so passionate about it because in Nick
- 34:44Speaker 1: Canyon like, yeah, you're the only DJ I can have. Yeah,
- 34:47Speaker 1: I really don't want to do radio. I was so
- 34:49Speaker 1: excited when I heard it. I was like, Dick cannon
- 34:50Speaker 1: More's with DJ. I was like, what Christmas? Unfortunately COVID
- 34:56Speaker 1: hit and there was just a rough Yeah, of course
- 35:00Speaker 1: nothing going on. So but the pay is still it's
- 35:03Speaker 1: still a battle. It's still a battle to get with
- 35:05Speaker 1: these men get, you know, and I'm fighting so the
- 35:08Speaker 1: next little girls don't have to have as part of
- 35:10Speaker 1: a battle as I did. I've officially accepted that I'm
- 35:15Speaker 1: that person because there was no female DJ like me
- 35:17Speaker 1: before me. You threaten them, you think they would be
- 35:21Speaker 1: willing to lose you, because didn't. They happened with like
- 35:23Speaker 1: I want to say, big Boy years ago, like where
- 35:26Speaker 1: what radio station was? He did leave. He left, and
- 35:28Speaker 1: he and they could pay him the whole time, and
- 35:31Speaker 1: they didn't. And then they tried to come back around
- 35:32Speaker 1: and offer him the money and it was too late.
- 35:34Speaker 1: And then they tried to assume him, didn't they Do
- 35:36Speaker 1: you remember that? Yep? I remember all that. So Big
- 35:40Speaker 1: Boy did that, you know, And I tried to follow
- 35:42Speaker 1: his footsteps and the exact same thing, and they were like, okay,
- 35:45Speaker 1: well we'll challenge it. No, the power was like well
- 35:49Speaker 1: and then you went time. They just try to convince
- 35:51Speaker 1: me to stay, you know, like, oh maybe in a
- 35:53Speaker 1: couple of years. You don't understand how hard it is
- 35:55Speaker 1: once you leave, like people will stop calling you. It's
- 35:58Speaker 1: it's a lot of mind game. It's a lot of threats.
- 36:01Speaker 1: What did you think when they're saying that, all right,
- 36:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna show you. So I quit and I ended
- 36:05Speaker 1: up going to our heart and things got a little
- 36:07Speaker 1: bit better, but still their sharks there and they're big.
- 36:10Speaker 1: They're like McDonald's, they're they're a corporation, and they got
- 36:14Speaker 1: all these stations all over the country and they run
- 36:17Speaker 1: them all so and then once I got in there,
- 36:19Speaker 1: I saw, Okay, they're a little bit. They treated me
- 36:22Speaker 1: better to get me, to steal me away from power,
- 36:24Speaker 1: but they're not taking care of me nowhere near the
- 36:27Speaker 1: way I should be taken care of. And I think
- 36:28Speaker 1: that's a tough battle as a woman because women's biggest
- 36:31Speaker 1: I think women's biggest downflaw is we struggle with our
- 36:35Speaker 1: networth or not our net worth? Are worth? Are worth?
- 36:37Speaker 1: Are worth? Is? Ultimately, I say, the biggest dilemma woman face.
- 36:43Speaker 1: It's not man, it's not love. It is literally self worth.
- 36:47Speaker 1: So you have to live in a world where you're
- 36:50Speaker 1: undervalued right period, off top and you have to jump.
- 36:54Speaker 1: You have to know you're worth, you're worth, and then
- 36:57Speaker 1: you gotta stand by stand by it. It's just the
- 37:00Speaker 1: most difficult win the press and when not to press
- 37:03Speaker 1: too hard because like Nicki Minaj said it best, like
- 37:06Speaker 1: if jay Z goes into a meeting nam this needs
- 37:08Speaker 1: to get done. He's a boss. She goes into a
- 37:11Speaker 1: meeting and starts breaking it down. She's a bit And
- 37:13Speaker 1: that's like definitely what it is for us. So it's
- 37:16Speaker 1: really finding that balance. I had to cater to these
- 37:18Speaker 1: guys egos that are your bosses, but holding your ground,
- 37:22Speaker 1: you know, I think what you're drunk like, I'm honestly like,
- 37:26Speaker 1: but it takes it. It takes people to pave the way.
- 37:28Speaker 1: And like I said, I've accepted that I'm the one
- 37:31Speaker 1: they because now look at how many female DJs there are,
- 37:35Speaker 1: It's beautiful. I've never seen this many female DJs in
- 37:38Speaker 1: hip hop. It's a beautiful thing, like, and they're successful
- 37:41Speaker 1: on all different levels and I've never seen that when
- 37:43Speaker 1: I was coming up. So I think that's some change
- 37:46Speaker 1: has been made. Change has been made. Thanks thanks to
- 37:49Speaker 1: you and your contributions. Now, I ain't gonna lie the
- 37:54Speaker 1: Jamakan means Hella piste off because I feel like, um,
- 37:59Speaker 1: what the funk? Like, you know, we had to me
- 38:01Speaker 1: to error, Like we've survived so much. I feel like
- 38:03Speaker 1: women is like the you know, between the black black
- 38:07Speaker 1: lives or black racism and women, I don't know who
- 38:10Speaker 1: has it worse. To be honest, it's just different and
- 38:15Speaker 1: we all got it. We all got it work. We're
- 38:16Speaker 1: all set behind that that that invisible white life. Because
- 38:21Speaker 1: literally even when I left Heart my Heart, there was
- 38:23Speaker 1: a white man that got the exact same position as
- 38:25Speaker 1: me and kid got paid double what I was making.
- 38:28Speaker 1: You know what I mean? For this is that protects
- 38:30Speaker 1: people from that or not? But we gotta keep pushing.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Is there a union? You might be right, but I'm
- 38:36Speaker 1: a DJ. We don't even have insurance. You know what
- 38:38Speaker 1: I mean? This is like, wow, self independent? You guys
- 38:42Speaker 1: are independent, correct, I left know what it's like. We
- 38:44Speaker 1: don't get you, We don't get none of that. We
- 38:46Speaker 1: got to figure this out. And I feel like things
- 38:48Speaker 1: are changing. Feel I've heard of companies that are being created,
- 38:51Speaker 1: so eventually, like I said, I think feel eventually there
- 38:54Speaker 1: will be more. I think you're dispelling so many myths
- 38:58Speaker 1: because when you hear someone on the radio and you
- 39:00Speaker 1: see someone like DJ Charisma, you're like, oh my god,
- 39:02Speaker 1: DJ Charisma huge, following, big parties, Chris Brown every night,
- 39:06Speaker 1: and like literally like stuff that you're saying here, like
- 39:09Speaker 1: I would never say, I would never even imagine that
- 39:13Speaker 1: you DJ Charisma goes through this and gets eight dollars
- 39:16Speaker 1: an hour at power one six never made more than
- 39:19Speaker 1: forty eight dollars every two weeks. Like it's rough, that's crazy,
- 39:23Speaker 1: that's a crazy journey. So how long have you been
- 39:25Speaker 1: in DJ now? It's almost sixteen years, sixteen since I
- 39:31Speaker 1: started starting. So if you decide like say like f this,
- 39:38Speaker 1: Like I'm like, what is your bar? Like where you're
- 39:40Speaker 1: like f this? And then you just you go a
- 39:42Speaker 1: hundred percent independent, Like what does that scope look like?
- 39:45Speaker 1: I mean, that's what I did when I quit radio,
- 39:47Speaker 1: and I when there's so many options nowadays, we're in
- 39:49Speaker 1: a great time in era. Technology is booming. There are
- 39:53Speaker 1: so many platforms now and these tech companies will pay
- 39:56Speaker 1: triple what a traditional radio station is paying. So I
- 39:59Speaker 1: feel like it is just so much more opportunity. And
- 40:01Speaker 1: do they reach out to reach out to them? Both?
- 40:04Speaker 1: But like I like your hustle. Yeah, And I think
- 40:08Speaker 1: that you came from mud and flower Tortilla's case of
- 40:13Speaker 1: Dias wearing nothing but thirty and a gangster. Can we
- 40:17Speaker 1: call it the gangster church gangster churro. I don't know,
- 40:24Speaker 1: we're going We're gonna figure it out. We need your help.
- 40:25Speaker 1: We need your help. I love that you came through
- 40:28Speaker 1: and you dispelled probably every thought that I even I
- 40:33Speaker 1: honestly had no idea what the life of a DJ was.
- 40:36Speaker 1: You want to be a DJ, you better get used
- 40:38Speaker 1: to eating while broke, you know what I'm saying. And
- 40:41Speaker 1: if you are one of the lucky ones that become
- 40:44Speaker 1: did you finally passed that bar? I passed that bar,
- 40:47Speaker 1: then it's it'll all pay off. Look at Kalin, like
- 40:49Speaker 1: he broke huge walls. He's the first of his kind
- 40:52Speaker 1: in so many ways. But he was like name dropping
- 40:55Speaker 1: his name only like I don't know how he was
- 40:57Speaker 1: able to. He eatd a lot. He was a curator.
- 41:00Speaker 1: He was the brain that said, let's put you you,
- 41:03Speaker 1: you and together you would sound good on this A
- 41:05Speaker 1: and our work and a lot of DJs we don't
- 41:08Speaker 1: get our and our credit, you know what I mean?
- 41:10Speaker 1: So do you guys stick together? Who the DJs? Yeah?
- 41:13Speaker 1: I feel the DJs do a lot of us, you
- 41:16Speaker 1: know what I mean. For the most part, I get
- 41:18Speaker 1: a lot of love from a lot of the males,
- 41:20Speaker 1: especially outside of the West Coast. So I'm gonna ask
- 41:22Speaker 1: another controversial question. I hate to keep bringing her up.
- 41:26Speaker 1: But now I'm curious, so you walking through Parashilton walks
- 41:29Speaker 1: in the room. Now she's a he. She doesn't even
- 41:31Speaker 1: need the money. I'm muna say, looking at from outside,
- 41:36Speaker 1: she's obviously gonna make more just because she's white, right
- 41:38Speaker 1: of course, off to say that, right, And she's famous,
- 41:41Speaker 1: she's paras Hilton song. But you're also famous. I mean
- 41:45Speaker 1: you're She's getting big, big, big, massive checks that hip
- 41:48Speaker 1: hop DJs do not get. And that's another thing like
- 41:51Speaker 1: I'm I'm also pushing forward is to hip hop DJs.
- 41:55Speaker 1: We need the same respect as these international DJs. It's
- 41:58Speaker 1: just mind blowing, like a DJ snake in them. They're
- 42:01Speaker 1: getting a hundred K a set a hip hop DJ,
- 42:05Speaker 1: you're fucking lucky if you get a thousand? Yes what yes, there,
- 42:11Speaker 1: you're lucky. And those DJs in Vegas? Who's who's that
- 42:14Speaker 1: big DJ in Vegas? It was a big DJ Vegas?
- 42:16Speaker 1: What's his name? Who? Why are you telling me who's
- 42:19Speaker 1: a hip hop? Big hip hop? Not a hip hop?
- 42:21Speaker 1: It was hip hop. They're all E d M DJs,
- 42:24Speaker 1: all of them. So why why don't you, for lack
- 42:27Speaker 1: of better words, a passionate about hip hop. Okay, so
- 42:30Speaker 1: because you're passionate about hip hop, you're not gonna sell out.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I'm not gonna sell out. I'm passionate. I'm gonna change things.
- 42:35Speaker 1: So someone's like, I've been told that. I have been
- 42:41Speaker 1: told that to my face plenty of times. Like when
- 42:43Speaker 1: I was the first time we are a dish, I
- 42:46Speaker 1: was having an audition for Beats by Dre Headphones and
- 42:48Speaker 1: it was me versus one of my co workers. A man.
- 42:51Speaker 1: He's like, Christmas, You're gonna get nowhere in this industry.
- 42:54Speaker 1: He's like, first of all, it's like the way you dressed.
- 42:56Speaker 1: He's like, you're a tomboy. And then goes and then
- 42:58Speaker 1: he's like all you do is vouch for the hood,
- 43:01Speaker 1: you got for the streets. And he's like, it's gonna
- 43:03Speaker 1: get you nowhere. He's like, you're gonna learn. He's like,
- 43:05Speaker 1: you're gonna see. He's like, you need to be doing
- 43:07Speaker 1: E d M sets, and you need to be doing
- 43:09Speaker 1: pop and international sets. And I didn't were looking at
- 43:13Speaker 1: him like fuck, You're like you know, I'm like, nah,
- 43:17Speaker 1: I love hip hop funk that you guys will culture
- 43:19Speaker 1: vulture it because you catch these E d M DJs
- 43:22Speaker 1: using hip hop pieces constantly, you know what I mean?
- 43:25Speaker 1: So nah, but how do you cope with that? Mentally though?
- 43:28Speaker 1: Like that would be difficult challenge me, Like I always
- 43:31Speaker 1: look at everything as a challenge, and I always feel
- 43:32Speaker 1: like everyone's challenging me. All right, cool? And then I
- 43:35Speaker 1: ended up getting that gig that day and he didn't.
- 43:37Speaker 1: By the way, guy ended up being featured in Best
- 43:40Speaker 1: Buys Christmas catalog, you know, And it was just that
- 43:44Speaker 1: was the start, and then that confirmed my thoughts to
- 43:47Speaker 1: likec I got this gig over your heirs, I'm gonna
- 43:51Speaker 1: keep doing what I do. I look at the world
- 43:53Speaker 1: and I see social media and I feel like everything
- 43:55Speaker 1: that's negative or sexual like does really well. Then you
- 43:58Speaker 1: have like our podcast Eating Broke. You know, it's like, oh,
- 44:01Speaker 1: for lack of better word, we're more on the positive achievement,
- 44:05Speaker 1: positive stories, but you know, we're in the world where
- 44:08Speaker 1: you're constantly based like maybe we should do something controversial,
- 44:11Speaker 1: like why are we gonna stay loyal? Now? Of course
- 44:13Speaker 1: this is my baby, so I'm gonna stay loyal to it.
- 44:16Speaker 1: But it's hard to wake up every day going and
- 44:18Speaker 1: you're competing against a girl in a bikini. You're competing
- 44:21Speaker 1: against sexual stuff, for negative stuff. You just gotta put
- 44:24Speaker 1: them tonal vision glasses on the go, because that's exactly
- 44:27Speaker 1: what I was against, and I didn't. You know what
- 44:28Speaker 1: I mean, I love it, and I mean for all
- 44:30Speaker 1: your little girls out there that are just like me,
- 44:32Speaker 1: we could do it. Kah me and while broken broken,
- 45:47Speaker 1: I respect you and like you inspire me. Straight up,
- 45:51Speaker 1: let's go, so Charisma, where can we catch you? Where
- 45:55Speaker 1: can we find you? How can people book you if
- 45:57Speaker 1: they wanted to? I mean, just shoot your shot shot,
- 46:02Speaker 1: I try a d M or you know, as somebody
- 46:03Speaker 1: like I do. My best answer, Uh, you can catch
- 46:07Speaker 1: me if you're out in the southern California area. I'm

- 46:15Speaker 1: West Side, and that's national, so no matter where you're
- 46:18Speaker 1: at in the country, you can tune into that. I like,
- 46:20Speaker 1: I got more music coming. I got a brand new
- 46:22Speaker 1: song with Little Kim on the Way. Yeah, we shot
- 46:25Speaker 1: the video and everything, so it's got Little Kim coil Ray,
- 46:28Speaker 1: Lady London. It's like a Ladies night. Yeah, it's just
- 46:31Speaker 1: special to me because it's something I've been wanting to
- 46:32Speaker 1: do for years. When does it drop? It's I'm waiting
- 46:35Speaker 1: on the clearances, so any day now, like we're just
- 46:38Speaker 1: waiting on those clearances to go through. That's coming. It's
- 46:41Speaker 1: called she Ball. You can actually hear it in the name.
- 46:44Speaker 1: It's in the movie. It's the theme song of the movie,
- 46:47Speaker 1: so it does play a little bit. You can hear it.
- 46:49Speaker 1: Waiting for that to come out. Just trying to be
- 46:53Speaker 1: a game changer. You know, I got a lot of
- 46:54Speaker 1: stuff I'm working on. I got my own cannabis line.
- 46:56Speaker 1: Now got my own string, my Charisma strain. So where
- 46:59Speaker 1: can people up to Charisma and eat broke? You can
- 47:03Speaker 1: get us to benj. You heard that she got our

- 47:33Speaker 1: follow her. Check her out anywhere you you gag sister podcasts,
- 47:36Speaker 1: right huh for your national syndicated serious call. Yeah, what's
