- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Jim Moore of the Yukon Football Coaches Show.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Huskies five and three headed to a nice three game
- 0:05Speaker 1: homestand they get UAB and we're going to talk about
- 0:08Speaker 1: the Blazers a little bit later on. They had a
- 0:11Speaker 1: coaching change mid season. Trent Dilfer was let go and
- 0:17Speaker 1: they promoted one of the other assistants and they came
- 0:21Speaker 1: up and beat Memphis, twenty second ranked team in the country.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So they responded well, so their emotions will be riding high.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Let's go back, coach to the ballgame at Rice. You
- 0:32Speaker 1: led on the first play of the game. It was
- 0:35Speaker 1: an awesome way to start a game. Eighty r touchdown
- 0:38Speaker 1: pass connection Joe Fernano Skyler Bell. I have not seen
- 0:42Speaker 1: a play like that in college in a long time
- 0:45Speaker 1: where a receiver makes a short catch goes untouched. I
- 0:49Speaker 1: mean he went untouched for seventy yards. That rarely happens.
- 0:53Speaker 1: What a way to start a ball game.
- 0:56Speaker 2: It was a good way to start. And so.
- 1:00Speaker 3: And you listen, you love that, right, I mean, you
- 1:02Speaker 3: want that every time. You'd love to score on the
- 1:03Speaker 3: first play every time. But I want to make sure
- 1:07Speaker 3: that when something like that happens, that we don't slip
- 1:09Speaker 3: into the I's gonna be an easy one.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you know, and not.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I'm not sure that that happened, but I was a
- 1:18Speaker 3: little concerned that it may have. And we've addressed it
- 1:21Speaker 3: because there's no easy games. And sometimes, you know, I've
- 1:24Speaker 3: been doing this a long time and scene times where
- 1:27Speaker 3: you know, you come out and you score fast or
- 1:29Speaker 3: you score early, and then everyone kind of thinks that
- 1:31Speaker 3: it's going to be easy, and it's it's just not easy. So, uh,
- 1:35Speaker 3: that's been addressed, and we'll make sure that if we
- 1:37Speaker 3: score first in any of these games coming up or
- 1:40Speaker 3: first scoring the first play, which we're always trying to do,
- 1:42Speaker 3: that we handle it better than we did on Saturday.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yeah, you led seven nothing, fourteen, ten, twenty one, seventeen
- 1:49Speaker 1: at the break and ended up twenty four to twenty
- 1:52Speaker 1: four in regulation. So playing with the lead versus playing
- 1:57Speaker 1: from behind, what's the difference in what's going on on
- 2:01Speaker 1: the sideline? Is there more urgency when you're down or
- 2:04Speaker 1: how does that work?
- 2:06Speaker 3: It depends on you know, how far ahead or how
- 2:09Speaker 3: far behind you are. But what I would like to
- 2:12Speaker 3: tell you is that it doesn't matter at all that
- 2:14Speaker 3: you should always play the same way with the same
- 2:17Speaker 3: sense of urgency, the same passion, the same emotion, the
- 2:21Speaker 3: you know, the same intensity.
- 2:23Speaker 2: And that's what you're striving for. So that's what we're
- 2:26Speaker 2: always trying to do.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Is you know, you don't ignore the scoreboard, because the
- 2:30Speaker 3: scoreboard matters, but you know, it shouldn't affect the way
- 2:34Speaker 3: that you play the game, the passion, the effort.
- 2:38Speaker 2: It just shouldn't.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And you know what, it's a kind of a natural
- 2:42Speaker 3: human reaction to let it. And so we we concentrate
- 2:46Speaker 3: and talk about, you know, just play the next play,
- 2:50Speaker 3: play the next every plays it's an own entity, regardless
- 2:53Speaker 3: of any circumstance. And you've got to just keep drilling
- 2:56Speaker 3: that into into players heads and into coaches heads that
- 2:59Speaker 3: that's got to be the way that you ultimately become successful.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And and Rice, I think took did a nice job
- 3:07Speaker 1: of bouncing back. I mean those two long touchdowns that
- 3:10Speaker 1: they got as Yukon seemed to grab the momentum of
- 3:14Speaker 1: the game, I mean that those were killers. And obviously you.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Don't want that.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Can you can you explain how that happens because it
- 3:23Speaker 1: looks like Yukon controls the game and then bang, they
- 3:26Speaker 1: score immediately and that just changes everything.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Well, that's sports, as you know.
- 3:31Speaker 3: You know most games, there's momentum shifts and it's who
- 3:34Speaker 3: handles it better, you know, who can come back. And
- 3:37Speaker 3: when they made a play, we were able to come back,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and you know, they we'd make a play and they
- 3:42Speaker 3: were able to come back. And that's not okay. I mean,
- 3:44Speaker 3: our goal is not to let them come back. I
- 3:46Speaker 3: think it kind of goes back, Mike to what I
- 3:47Speaker 3: was saying earlier about just, you know, never having the
- 3:52Speaker 3: mindset that you're supposed to.
- 3:54Speaker 2: Win a game.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Yeah, feeling like you're going to win a game, and
- 3:58Speaker 3: being determined to win a game and doing everything you
- 4:00Speaker 3: can to win a game. Yeah, and we're prepared to
- 4:03Speaker 3: win a game. Those things are great. But when you
- 4:07Speaker 3: are feeling that you're supposed to win a game, to me,
- 4:10Speaker 3: that's entitlement. I think entitlement leads to failure. I don't
- 4:13Speaker 3: think entitlement is a good thing. So I just have
- 4:15Speaker 3: to make sure that I do a good job of
- 4:18Speaker 3: keeping our guys on track, regardless of what the situation is.
- 4:22Speaker 3: The same as if you're behind, you know, hey, you
- 4:25Speaker 3: just keep playing, you just keep playing. Just keep playing.
- 4:27Speaker 3: Just keep playing it. You don't panic, you just keep playing.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Something good's going to happen.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Yeah, sixty minutes. Is that's why they say sixty minute game.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, you know you've been around this a long time.
- 4:39Speaker 3: It's just I think that's the right way to approach
- 4:41Speaker 3: it is, just fight through it.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Well, Quentin Jackson hurt the Huskies. The rice running back
- 4:47Speaker 1: he ran twenty one times. We know they ran the
- 4:50Speaker 1: ball well, but coach, they threw the ball well, and
- 4:53Speaker 1: that's not something they had been doing. So what did
- 4:56Speaker 1: you see when you reviewed tape on the Rice Ucon game.
- 5:00Speaker 1: They were able to throw the ball. I know, a
- 5:01Speaker 1: lot of short stuff, you know, got them a lot
- 5:05Speaker 1: of their yardage. But this is a team that threw
- 5:07Speaker 1: for under one hundred yards on average, and they threw
- 5:10Speaker 1: well over one hundred yards that day.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Well, they had the big play on the tiny little
- 5:16Speaker 3: you know, slip screen out the backside. So down the
- 5:19Speaker 3: field throws, we were okay, we were fine as you
- 5:23Speaker 3: looked at it.
- 5:24Speaker 2: There weren't things that hurt us down the field. Really.
- 5:26Speaker 3: There was one to a tight end where we weren't
- 5:27Speaker 3: good with our eyes. But we felt you know, Okay
- 5:31Speaker 3: about the way we defended the pass. It was more
- 5:33Speaker 3: you know, some of the big plays in the run
- 5:35Speaker 3: game and then the big play in the pass game
- 5:37Speaker 3: that were more concerning to us.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Right, three hundred yards on the ground, I mean that's
- 5:42Speaker 1: what Mike like.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Yards like Well, now I interrupted you too soon, because
- 5:47Speaker 3: three hundred yards on the ground, Hell yeah, that's concerning
- 5:49Speaker 3: his heck, but the yards in the pass game, you
- 5:54Speaker 3: have to break down why and how they got those yards,
- 5:56Speaker 3: and a lot of them came on that one play.
- 5:58Speaker 3: So you know, listen, I'm not dismissing that we've got
- 6:01Speaker 3: to be better playing the pass and tackling. But it
- 6:04Speaker 3: wasn't as bad as the yards looked if you take
- 6:08Speaker 3: it on a down to down basis. Now that I'll
- 6:10Speaker 3: let you finish your run game question, and I think
- 6:12Speaker 3: I know you were going with it.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Yeah, well three hundred yards and well, I think the
- 6:17Speaker 1: thing too is, you know, obviously we talked about it
- 6:19Speaker 1: before the game. They run the ball, they can control
- 6:22Speaker 1: the clock a little bit. You kind of only ran
- 6:24Speaker 1: for I think one hundred and five yards something like that,
- 6:27Speaker 1: which is a little unusual. What was going on on
- 6:29Speaker 1: that side of the ball. The run attack for the
- 6:32Speaker 1: Huskies wasn't you know, maybe up to standard. Even throwing
- 6:35Speaker 1: the ball so well though, that kind of makes up
- 6:38Speaker 1: for things.
- 6:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, we've were throwing the ball well, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 3: we're one of the top passing teams in the country.
- 6:43Speaker 2: So we didn't run the ball poorly.
- 6:47Speaker 3: We just didn't run it a lot, yeah, you know,
- 6:50Speaker 3: and we chose to matriculate the ball down the field
- 6:54Speaker 3: throwing it and that's what, you know, was what was
- 6:58Speaker 3: looking to be successful for us at that point in time.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Given that, though, you know, we think it's very important
- 7:04Speaker 3: that we continue to work on schematically finding ways to
- 7:07Speaker 3: run the ball more effectively so we don't become one dimensional.
- 7:11Speaker 3: You know, we've talked about balance a lot, you and I,
- 7:13Speaker 3: and we don't want to lose that balance, which is,
- 7:16Speaker 3: you know, the ability to run the ball we need
- 7:18Speaker 3: when we need to run the ball.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, Coach Jim Moore with us. We'll be
- 7:23Speaker 1: back more. The Yukon Football Coaches Show in a moment
- 7:26Speaker 1: on Lear Field,
