- 0:10Our number 2 Millery Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:14Network. Wherever you're listening in the
- 0:15state of Iowa, We're certainly grateful that you our top of the
- 0:18hour. We'll turn things over the
- 0:20drive. Heather and Lucas take you until
- 0:225:00 off to Chicago. Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors
- 0:26Cappy's weekly segment. He joins us Cap Trenton.
- 0:29Ken, thanks for coming on. Good to talk to you, Capper.
- 0:31How are you? I'm good boys.
- 0:34How we doing? Doing well, I guess we got to
- 0:37start with the PCA in that incredible sequence last night,
- 0:41the catch in centre field into a left centre field.
- 0:44By the time he, you know, try tracked down the baseball and
- 0:48then comes up to lead off the inning and parks 1 into the
- 0:51right field scoreboard. I don't know if they hit the
- 0:54Budweiser sign, if it was a foot or two below that, but it was
- 0:57absolutely crushed. What a superstar the Cubs have
- 1:00on their hands. Oh, my goodness, that ball was
- 1:04hit. We had Jed Hoyer on with us this
- 1:06morning and he's like, well, that ball got out in a hurry,
- 1:10452 feet, a laser beam to write off the video board and gave the
- 1:17Cubs a little breathing room. They want it 5:00 to 3:00.
- 1:20So that was a big home run to go from 4/3 to 5/3.
- 1:23And now we'll see what they do tonight.
- 1:25But this kid is some kind of special kid and my producer it's
- 1:31ESPN, Shane Orland keeps telling me get on board 4040.
- 1:35My one concern with PCA is his low on base percentage combined
- 1:42with it swings at some bad pitches, sometimes great bad
- 1:46ball hitter. I just don't know when teams
- 1:50August in the September fighting to get to the playoffs.
- 1:55I just can you keep doing this. I mean, 73 games in 19 home runs
- 2:01can he had another 21 home runs. We'll see.
- 2:06The I had a guy Drew that I checked in He said we were
- 2:10talking earlier about an extension.
- 2:11I said again, well, don't have to worry about it for another
- 2:14six years if you really don't want to with APCA, you're just
- 2:16going to be paying arbitration. But he asked a question about
- 2:20and something you you mentioned there, he has the highest chase
- 2:22rate in baseball. We don't long term in baseball.
- 2:25That's one thing that you look at that chase rate, it's not not
- 2:29sustainable to hit there. What can be done to improve upon
- 2:32that? He's still a young guy, is it?
- 2:3423 or 22 I. Mean this is as simple as that.
- 2:36Just more reps and maybe that Chase rate rate's going to come
- 2:40back. Yes, yes, You know, he first of
- 2:45all, they're going to get more of a book on them.
- 2:47AB he's got to mature and become more disciplined as a hitter,
- 2:52The great kid. He's got the IT factor, all of
- 2:55it. But there's going to be a moment
- 2:57where you go, I'm not throwing you something where you can get
- 3:01the head of the bat on it. Now, again, these are human
- 3:04beings, so they're going to make mistakes.
- 3:07But yeah, last week he hit a pitch that he was the highest
- 3:10out of the strike zone pitch of the season that he and he hit it
- 3:14and he hit it a mile for a home run.
- 3:16He also has the second lowest from the ground out of the
- 3:20strike zone in baseball this year and he hit that out.
- 3:24That's unsustainable for me just from watching baseball for as
- 3:29many seasons as I have north of 30.
- 3:32Again, I love the kid. I think he's an awesome person.
- 3:35He's a great defender. He's an awesome base runner and
- 3:38a base stealer. He's got it all power, but
- 3:42307-3053 O 6 where he's hovered for on base percentage.
- 3:47You can't put that guy at the top of the line up like that.
- 3:50Got the Bleacher Creatures eating out of his hand, that's
- 3:53for certain. They just love him out there.
- 3:56Cap the bullpen. Trent and I talked about this
- 3:58early in the program as well, just how much better I think
- 4:01they are than than anybody foresaw before the, you know,
- 4:05going back to the beginning of the season.
- 4:07I watched Keller last night. Kelly let a ball get by him.
- 4:11There was a Brewer on 3rd. I can't recall who it was.
- 4:13It was a one run ball game. I think at the time when Keller
- 4:16is in their PCA and yet to hit his home run or probably make
- 4:19his catch. Actually, I was that inning
- 4:21anyways. So the third out, Hoskins is in
- 4:26the batter's box. He came up and in to get strike
- 4:29three. Hoskins never had a chance.
- 4:31Keller's been unbelievable. I know you like him.
- 4:34Field bars terrific. Palencia, Cabrera, Hodge down
- 4:37here worked the perfect inning last night.
- 4:39I mean, this bullpen cap, I think that they're going to
- 4:41spend their money elsewhere. And this was clearly an area we
- 4:45thought that was going to be of concern.
- 4:47But man, oh man, if they shut us up.
- 4:49We'll just wait. Now you have these decisions to
- 4:52make. Just in the next week we you're
- 4:55going to have Shota Inanaga throw for Iowa on Friday.
- 4:59If all goes well and he feels good, he's going to start
- 5:02probably next Wednesday against the Saint Louis Cardinals in
- 5:06Saint Louis. OK, so who's coming out of the
- 5:08rotation? Probably Ben Brown, I would
- 5:11think. Probably, yeah.
- 5:13I would think, OK, so if Ben Brown comes out of the rotation
- 5:17and moves into the bullpen, who's coming off the roster?
- 5:21And then Porter Hodge will be ready.
- 5:23Who's coming off the roster there?
- 5:26Yeah, because we never mentioned, we never mentioned
- 5:28Flexion and he's been good. Oh, he's not going anywhere,
- 5:32right? So Henesis Cabrera, you get rid
- 5:37of him. Maybe you need a lefty, but he's
- 5:41not great, but he's solid. So I don't know what they do.
- 5:47Sometimes these things resolve themselves as you get ready to
- 5:50make a roster move, you go who's the injured and a guy gets put
- 5:54on the shelf for 10 days, You kick the can down the road.
- 5:58But you know, Porter, Hodge, Shota, Imanaga, Assad, he's got
- 6:04to come back at at some point, you would think.
- 6:06And then if you go make a trade and you don't give up anyone off
- 6:10your Major League roster, then you're going to be giving
- 6:14prospects out of the system. Jim Bowden put out, and I liked
- 6:18him a lot, but he put out one of the most asinine trade proposals
- 6:22I've read in a long time. I'll Contra Casey, Kate Horton
- 6:27and a guy in the lower minors and you get back Sandy.
- 6:32I'll Contra. I'm like, hang on a second, You
- 6:35want me to give you a guy out of my rotation and you want me to
- 6:38give you the top 2 outfielders in my system and another guy for
- 6:42a guy who has one year left after this year and has scuffled
- 6:45with his command? Now the Cubs may go.
- 6:49We can make him a #1 starter and we can fix the issues that he's
- 6:53had. But we'll find out.
- 6:55I would be shocked if they gave up that much.
- 7:00Well, you mentioned Kate Horton. So when they do get to a point
- 7:03that whatever that number is in the back of their mind that
- 7:06we're not going to let him pitch over X amount of innings, what
- 7:09will they do with him when they get to that point?
- 7:12They say they have a plan. I asked you had that this
- 7:15morning. He said we have a plan.
- 7:18They feel like they can manage his innings and that they can
- 7:22keep him in that rotation. I don't think you're looking at
- 7:26a situation where this guy gets shut down.
- 7:28He's throwing the ball really well.
- 7:30He matched ball scheme pitch for pitch last Friday.
- 7:33And so why would you take him out of your rotation?
- 7:37And then there's the kid at AA. He'll be getting to your level
- 7:40pretty quickly. Jackson Wiggins and he's got an
- 7:44ERA of two at AA. That guy 6 foot 5240I mean, you
- 7:51want me to give you that guy? What if you think I'm not saying
- 7:54they do? I'm asking the question, what if
- 7:57Jed said to you, Ken Trent, that guy's a #1 starter?
- 8:02Maybe not today, but within the next two years.
- 8:05He is a number one ace. I'm not trading them.
- 8:09Then you got a lot of questions here.
- 8:14And if not now, when? That's remember Theo and Jed
- 8:18said that when they got a role this Chapman, they said if not
- 8:23now, when? Well, your team is 17 / 5. 100
- 8:27feels like that again. Win the World Series if they
- 8:29make the right moves. And I made this argument with
- 8:32Ken last week. Did.
- 8:33I win no of. Course not the Dodgers.
- 8:37This might be as susceptible as the Dodgers have been and might
- 8:40be in the next half decade. You don't know.
- 8:42I'm show Hay's coming back now pitching.
- 8:44What's he going to be next season if it doesn't go their
- 8:47way this year, how quickly they're going to spend and
- 8:49continue to go out there? I think the opportunity is now
- 8:52going in. I got a name for you, Kathy.
- 8:54Go down this path with him. Matt Shaw, we loved what he did
- 8:57after getting sent down here. Worked his ass off.
- 8:59We saw it, we heard about it, did everything both offensively
- 9:02and defensively you need to. But let's say he is just kind of
- 9:05what he is right now. Fine, adequate, and Ryan McMahon
- 9:09becomes available come trade deadline from Colorado.
- 9:12You don't have to give an arm and a leg.
- 9:13He's got another year left at $16,000,000 next year on his
- 9:17contract. Takes a couple your number, I
- 9:20don't know, 5 and 10 prospects to bring in Ryan McMahon to play
- 9:23the hot corner for you for this year and next.
- 9:26Cubs willing to do that if we don't see an additional step
- 9:29this year from Shaw. No, no.
- 9:33Interesting. Matt Shaw is legit defensively.
- 9:371/3 legit. Why would I want to go get Ryan
- 9:41McMahon? He's a good defender.
- 9:45I don't think he's any better than Matt Shaw.
- 9:47So why am I get going and taking on $16,000,000?
- 9:51The only way I could see them moving Matt Shaw is if you said,
- 9:56all right, we're not giving you Jackson Wiggins or we're not
- 9:58giving you Kate Horton. Well, I got to give you
- 10:00something. If I'm getting Sandy Altantra or
- 10:02Nathan Ivaldi or what's his name, Dylan Cease or Michael
- 10:08King or Jacob degrom or Chris Sale, any of the names that are
- 10:12out there, Well, I got to give you something.
- 10:14That's the only way I could see that happening.
- 10:18But I they love that shot. I think you look around that
- 10:22team, first round pick, Cubs left field.
- 10:25He basically developed the center fielder.
- 10:27He played six games in the Mets Miners and then got hurt.
- 10:30PCA, you brought Michael Bush over from the Dodger minor
- 10:36leagues, so I won't claim him. Nico Horner, first round pick.
- 10:41Matshaw, first round pick. Miguel Amaya, first round pick.
- 10:45Justin Steele, a draft pick. I mean, you've done a lot with
- 10:50your draft picks to get this team where it is.
- 10:53Suzuki as he looks back on and apparently he was disappointed
- 10:56when he was told he's going to be primarily the DH this year.
- 10:59Do you think if he was asked again that he would admit that?
- 11:02You know what? This is worked out for the best.
- 11:06Yeah, I don't think he was as disappointed as was reported.
- 11:10They had a bunch of Zoom calls with him and he was cool with it
- 11:13as long as he was going to get, you know, some opportunities.
- 11:17And they've done a good job, especially as of late.
- 11:19Tucker as a banged up ring finger didn't look like it last
- 11:23night with three hits, but he was cool with being the DH as
- 11:27long as he got a little bit of run and he's been in left field
- 11:30when in half, was banged up and on the IL for 10 days.
- 11:35He was out there for Kyle Tucker.
- 11:37He's getting his opportunities. I don't think he's upset.
- 11:40He's got eighteen home runs. He's among the MLB leaders in
- 11:44RBI's. It's all worked out well and the
- 11:46team's really good. Over to some football last week,
- 11:50there was some rookie OTAs, and yet Caleb Williams stuck around,
- 11:54still learning things. Ben Johnson said he still has a
- 11:57lot to learn about this offense. What does it say when it's all
- 12:00rookies out there that your quarterback sticks around and
- 12:02hangs out with the youngsters for another week?
- 12:05Yeah, I think that's super cool. And you know, look, I've always
- 12:08said to my kids, you don't get extra credit for not doing
- 12:11drugs. That's expected in our family.
- 12:15And when you're Caleb Williams and you're in your second year
- 12:19with a new head coach and a new offense, I love that you did it,
- 12:24but you should have done it. If he wasn't there, that would
- 12:28have bothered me because dude, what do you got to go do to take
- 12:31another vacation? You're going to get a vacation
- 12:34starting this week. They're off for like a month.
- 12:36So he needed to be there. I love that he did it, But as I
- 12:41said, it's expected. Cap when you think back to last
- 12:45year, the other first round pick they had in in that 2024 draft
- 12:48was Roma Doonsay. What would what was kind of the
- 12:51report court card on his rookie campaign?
- 12:55I thought he got personally, I thought he got better as the
- 12:57year went on. They wanted, I'm guessing see,
- 13:00you know, another big step forward out of him.
- 13:02What was the doomsday's year like?
- 13:04What do the Bears need to see from him this year?
- 13:07I thought the Bears were very, very pleased with how he did.
- 13:13I thought Roma Doomsday had a good rookie year and he will
- 13:17only get better and better. You know, you had Keenan Allen,
- 13:21a veteran who needed his opportunities, you had DJ Moore,
- 13:24you have Cole Commet. So as the season went on, did he
- 13:28get better and better? He absolutely did.
- 13:32I think he's going to have a hell of a year this year.
- 13:34I do. Biggest question mark still
- 13:37remaining with this squad. The thing that still says, you
- 13:40know what, I don't think they're going to make the playoffs this
- 13:42year because. Their defensive line.
- 13:48If they don't make the playoffs, playoffs, it's because their
- 13:51defensive line didn't put enough pressure on the quarterback.
- 13:55That's where I would be. I was going to.
- 13:57I think they've got to make sure you got to stop the run first
- 14:00and then you have got to get pressure on the quarterback.
- 14:04I would say the Lions, the Vikings and the Packers, but
- 14:07that's just me. I think the divisions
- 14:08unbelievable. I think that the divisions.
- 14:11Outstage, I'm not worried about, I'm not worried about the Green
- 14:14Bay Packers. No, I think they're going to be
- 14:164th. I'm with you.
- 14:17I would, I would, you know, do they still have that exact about
- 14:21Trent? They do, yeah, absolutely.
- 14:22So I think I would probably key off the Packers finishing 4th
- 14:27and go from there. We shall see where it goes, but
- 14:29I feel really good. Ken, he's having a love affair
- 14:33this summer with JJ McCarthy. What do you think of JJ McCarthy
- 14:37without seeing him obviously a year ago?
- 14:39How good of a quarterback is he going to be in year #1 in
- 14:41Minnesota? I I like JJ McCarthy a lot.
- 14:45I liked him in the draft. I did.
- 14:47I thought that kids a winner. Now, there are other people who
- 14:51don't like him as much because they question his.
- 14:58You know, at Michigan, he handed the ball off a ton.
- 15:01That was pretty much look like Army was playing out there at
- 15:05times. But they won the national title.
- 15:07And I remember him against, I think it was Michigan State, or
- 15:11maybe it was the Ohio State. I think it was the Ohio State
- 15:13game. He made a couple of throws in
- 15:15the scene that I'm like, OK, that dude's got an arm.
- 15:18So I like JJ McCarthy. I do a lot.
- 15:21I think it'll be a good player. Got a comeback from 2 knee
- 15:24surgeries and not have taken 1 snap and be get pressed into
- 15:28duty. That's not easy.
- 15:30We'll find out. Good stuff, Cap.
- 15:32Thanks for doing this, brother. Appreciate it.
- 15:34And we will talk to you in seven days.
- 15:36Thank you, Capper. I look forward to it, it's
- 15:38highlight of my. Week ours too.
- 15:40Thank you buddy. Appreciate it.
- 15:41Talk to you. Then David Kaplan, the cap man
- 15:44ESPN 1000 is where he does the morning show and he's got his
- 15:47YouTube channel that he reacts recaps, I should say Kap, the
- 15:54Cubs most of their games and then obviously the Bears as
- 15:58well. Tell you about Centurion stone
- 16:00of Iowa. They sponsor KAPI a Centurion
- 16:02stone of Iowa. If you're in the market for
- 16:05manufacturer natural stone to accent update your interior
- 16:09exterior project and they've also got the natural stone as
- 16:13well as you would imagine they've got over 200 different
- 16:16color and pattern combinations when it comes to Centurion
- 16:19stone. Centurion stoneofiowa.com Check
- 16:22them out the showroom and they do have Saturday morning hours
- 16:26from noon from 8:00 AM until noon, 5525 NE 22nd St. in Des
- 16:32Moines, Centurion Stone of Iowa. All right, we're going to head
- 16:36to Cappy to Cappy from Cappy to Nick Athen next catch up on him.
- 16:41Patrick Mahomes is trying to buy a WNB A-Team.
- 16:44So one with the thoughts of moving it to Kansas City.
- 16:47Or an expansion team. Or an expansion team.
- 16:50They're Apparently the WNBA is entering expansion territory.
- 16:54So, and they already are, with Golden State and Toronto joining
- 16:56next year. Kansas City had basketball.
- 17:01Didn't work. Right.
- 17:03Saint Louis also had basketball. Didn't work right, but Kansas
- 17:07City. Would, can't, would and the NBA
- 17:11worked in Kansas City if they had Jordan.
- 17:14Well, yeah, it would have worked in Des Moines.
- 17:16It would have worked in Osage. Would any pick a city in the
- 17:20West in in the country with with 22 on the roster?
- 17:24Would it work? Yes, yes, it.
- 17:25Would too. But what if that doesn't happen?
- 17:28Exactly. Yeah, I think it's a long shot
- 17:30to begin with. It seems like she loves Indiana.
- 17:32And it would. I mean, I don't know what.
- 17:34I think she would have a hard time.
- 17:36I don't. I don't know.
- 17:37I've never met her. I think she would have a hard
- 17:39time leaving and the impact that she has on that city, right?
- 17:46No, Absolutely, yeah. But she's really good friends
- 17:50with. Patrick Bowles, Yes.
- 17:52And she grew up a Chiefs fan and.
- 17:55And this could be something, I mean, we're talking 2310 years,
- 17:59right? Yeah, right.
- 18:00This could be. She's win a couple of, won a
- 18:02couple of championships. Backside of her career, now just
- 18:05becoming more of that veteran presence as opposed to the
- 18:08leader. Yeah.
- 18:10And she still win MVP. This year or then this year?
- 18:14Well, who else? Cuz Asia Wilson has taken a
- 18:17step. Back.
- 18:18Yeah, yeah. Liberty going to be great, but
- 18:20is it Anescu or is it Stewart splitting votes?
- 18:24Yeah, yeah, the gala, Minnesota. Yes, Collier.
- 18:28Yep, that's got to be the betting favorite.
- 18:31I would think, yeah. Well, we mentioned it when she
- 18:34got hurt. You're not going to find a
- 18:36better price. And I've already seen it's gone
- 18:37down significantly. And what did she get to do you
- 18:39remember? I think I grabbed it at plus
- 18:42255. It got up to like 285 or maybe
- 18:45even better than three to 1 and. Collier's got to be the big I
- 18:48mean, she's clearly the choice. Right.
- 18:49Absolutely, yeah. With what they're doing as a
- 18:52team, coupled with the way that she's playing.
- 18:53And Caitlin missed 2 1/2 weeks. And that's that's a part of it
- 18:56also when you miss that kind of time.
- 18:58But yeah, if you missed it now, I think that value is probably
- 19:02pretty well gone on. Caitlin.
- 19:04Let's see if they have it back up.
- 19:05Awards. There we go.
- 19:06Awards. Yeah.
- 19:07Colliers -275 Caitlin's now 2 to one.
- 19:12Did you see what Angel Reese did?
- 19:14You know you can criticize her for a lot of things.
- 19:17Businesswoman is one thing you can't be critical of.
- 19:19So somebody came up with the ME Bounce, right?
- 19:23She's trademarked it. It's a It was a term used to
- 19:26knock her. To knock her because she throws
- 19:29up a shot she's going to miss whether she's trying or not.
- 19:31She is. She just can't make those shots
- 19:33underneath the basket. Get the rebound pattern stats
- 19:36and the and the phrase was born me bounce.
- 19:39So she rebounded someone else's idea.
- 19:42That's how I read it and I thought that was great.
- 19:44Rebounded somebody else's idea, filed for a trademark for me,
- 19:49Bounds and she's going to get the trademark and have T-shirts.
- 19:52And I mean, I don't know who's gonna buy them, but still, you
- 19:55gotta give a yes. You have to give her credit.
- 20:00I thought that was a whoever came up with the tweet that she
- 20:04she rebounded someone else's idea.
- 20:07I thought that was brilliant, but good for her.
- 20:10We'll take a time out off to Kansas City, Nick Athan Chiefs
- 20:13are going through their OTAs as well.
- 20:17We'll talk to Nick about that. But I talked to him about is
- 20:20there any legs to this WNBA Mahomes getting?
- 20:25I think that could probably happen right 'cause he owns a
- 20:30part of the Royals, he owns a part of the current.
- 20:34That's the soccer team. That's the women's soccer team
- 20:37and he's got ownership in the Royals.
- 20:40Very good place to be. Good to be Patrick Mahomes in
- 20:42Kansas City. Miller and Condon are on the
- 20:44Iowa Sports Radio Network. I'm Miller Condon, welcome back.
- 20:591:30 on a Wednesday, top of the hour.
- 21:02The drive slides on in. Heather and Lucas take you until
- 21:055:00 overtime, Iowa from 5:00 until 6:00.
- 21:09Trent's plays of the day, they are still to come.
- 21:12Circus sports sponsor those. Off to the Kansas City area we
- 21:16go. He's Nick Athen.
- 21:18Chiefs blitz.com. Chiefs blitz.com for Nick.
- 21:21Nick Trenton, thanks for coming on.
- 21:23We'll get to the Chiefs in a second.
- 21:25We're going through the OTA's etcetera, But you tweeted this
- 21:28this morning. And I mean, it's a great
- 21:32summertime topic. I don't think it'll happen
- 21:35anytime soon. I I wouldn't be surprised if
- 21:37Mahomes is able to acquire AWNBA franchise.
- 21:40He's a part over to the Royals, likewise with the current, but
- 21:44he's also, I mean, Caitlin Clark grew up a Chiefs fan and they've
- 21:48become friends since then. And where's the old Kelsey Swift
- 21:52relationship? And I mean, it's a long shot at
- 21:55best. I don't know if she'd willingly
- 21:57leave Indiana, but stranger things have happened I guess.
- 22:02How are you connecting these dots?
- 22:05Well, I think sorry for her. I mean, she is she is the face
- 22:10of the WNBA and when she's not out there, people just don't
- 22:13watch. And that's no, you know,
- 22:15difference to the other players who, who are all some of the
- 22:19same parts, but the way the, the, the, the, the players on
- 22:23the field, except for Sophie Cunningham, they don't stick up
- 22:26for her. You know, I'll give you a
- 22:28perfect example. I lived in LA when Wayne Gretzky
- 22:31came and you know, Marty Mcsorley Punisher, yeah, he's
- 22:37just, he's a punisher. And you know, he would say,
- 22:40well, why do you keep getting two and five minute penalties?
- 22:42Because anybody goes after my, my guy, our franchise, the best
- 22:46player in the NHL, I'm going to pummel him so he never tries to
- 22:49do that stuff again. And she's just not getting the
- 22:51support. The WNBA is really mismanaged.
- 22:55I, in my opinion, officiating atrocious.
- 22:57They just don't know what to do and how to do it to make the
- 23:01game more her. But if I'm, if I'm Caitlin Clark
- 23:06and I'm in a team that doesn't stick up for me.
- 23:08I mean, she got pummeled last night twice and she gets a
- 23:11technical foul. I mean, this doesn't make sense.
- 23:13So the connecting the dots is really simple.
- 23:16The WNBA is looking very seriously at Kansas City as an
- 23:19expansion franchise. Pastor Holmes and Breeding the
- 23:21Holmes, along with the other owners of the KC Current, are
- 23:25putting a group together. Whether this expansion is
- 23:28announced in 2526 or 2728, it looks like City has a pretty
- 23:32good shot. They've got the venue, they've
- 23:34got the basketball heritage here.
- 23:37Based on the things you said, your relationship with Patrick
- 23:39and Brittany, growing up a Chiefs fan, a relationship with
- 23:43Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, you know, all these things, I
- 23:47just kind of put that out there this morning.
- 23:48And I thought, well, you know, I do know one thing.
- 23:51If Patrick Holmes is the owner, he's going to build a team
- 23:53around her and he'll he'll find the right enforcers, you know,
- 23:57in order to make sure that she gets the best and becomes the
- 24:00the greatest play WNBA player of all time.
- 24:02Portland, Toronto. They join next year.
- 24:04They're hoping 2028 would be the year.
- 24:07Philadelphia, Houston, where they've been before, Nashville,
- 24:10Cleveland among the other candidates.
- 24:12Besides the Mahomes factor, what would give Kansas City a leg up?
- 24:18Well, I, you know, I hate to be cynical.
- 24:21I think it begins and ends with Mahomes.
- 24:22Yeah. I mean, you know, he's got a
- 24:25stake in the Sporting Kansas City and the Royals and the
- 24:27current. He's got a larger stake in the
- 24:29current now. And I just think if he goes to
- 24:31the if he goes to the WNBA and says, hey, you know, we're not
- 24:34going to get an NBA franchise for Kansas City, though.
- 24:38You know, Memphis is struggling and it could be a possibility
- 24:41down the road. But I think if he's involved,
- 24:44all those others, all those Haitians are going to have a
- 24:48second seat because the fast Romans really wants to bad
- 24:51enough. And how well he's adapted
- 24:53himself to to buying franchises, being a part of the franchises,
- 24:58doing all the things that he's done to this point in his
- 25:00career, not to mention what he does on the field.
- 25:01He's greatest player, you know, in chief history, certainly in
- 25:04one of the best of all time in the NFL.
- 25:06But his business acumen is really strong.
- 25:09So I think if he's involved and he puts the pressure on him, I
- 25:13think they're going to jump all those other cities because they
- 25:15have the venue, they have the support, you know, set aside
- 25:19with the Chiefs and the world is going to do with their stadium
- 25:21nonsense, which will be decided at the end of the month.
- 25:24You know, he's he's he's a public figure, figure who
- 25:28remains committed to Kansas City even after his career is over.
- 25:31I think he's going to spend a lot of time in Kansas City.
- 25:33I wouldn't be surprised if he's the future owner of the Chiefs
- 25:36at some point too. So I think the WNBA needs a
- 25:42Hallmark owner somebody of his statue, you know, to grease the
- 25:47skids in Kansas City. There there are a lot of
- 25:50financial there's some really strong financial candidates to
- 25:55to back Mahomes in Kansas City. A lot of guys you haven't heard
- 25:59of him. We didn't really hear anything
- 26:00about John Sherman against the buying the Royals.
- 26:03And lo and behold, he's a multi billionaire who lives in Kansas
- 26:06City who had a small piece of the the Cleveland Indian slash
- 26:09guardian. So I, I just think if you look
- 26:13at all the dots, you look at every thing after wins another
- 26:18Super Bowl or two, you know, I think, I think honestly, if he
- 26:22wants the WNBA franchise in Kansas City, I think he gets it.
- 26:26Perhaps you've forgotten Bo Nixes in the league, so those
- 26:28Super Bowls are. OK, come on, man.
- 26:31Tell hey, listen, I love Bonex, OK?
- 26:34I want. Me too.
- 26:35I want a. 180° on this kid, I think he's a baller, I think
- 26:39he's a player. Just don't have the sophomore
- 26:41jinx, that's all. I warn people.
- 26:43You're preaching the choir there.
- 26:45Well, let's, let's move on. Let's talk about the NFL.
- 26:47Hey, we brought up Travis's, Kelsey's name in this
- 26:50conversation already. My goddess.
- 26:52He looked as though he is ready for what seemingly is going to
- 26:55be his final year. But yeah, you hear it all the
- 26:57time, right? Best shape of your life.
- 26:59Best shape of your life. He really looks like he might be
- 27:01in the best shape of his life. Wow.
- 27:04Yeah, he, he made a commitment, you know, from what we were
- 27:07told, you know, in in mid February, late February, that he
- 27:10was going to come back. You know, he let the chief know
- 27:13behind the scenes. And of course they made it.
- 27:14He made it official on his podcast.
- 27:16And I think he just, you know, like he said today in the press
- 27:19conference, you know, you have to dial in early, you know, you
- 27:22have to be committed, you know, in the offseason at the very
- 27:25beginning to work through the process of getting it shaped.
- 27:27Now there are reports where he lost 2025 lbs.
- 27:30He kind of soldered the media a little bit today, kind of
- 27:32jokingly says don't believe everything you see in social
- 27:34media, but he's definitely slimmed down.
- 27:36I'd say maybe 10, maybe 1015 lbs would be my guest.
- 27:40He looks like he's in great shape.
- 27:42The video that I've seen, he doesn't look as bulky now.
- 27:45He carried extra weight last year and I think, I think that
- 27:48hurt him and I think he knows that.
- 27:50But this team is really going to focus on speed, speed, speed,
- 27:53you know, in the backfield, in the wide receiver position.
- 27:56And if Kelsey can be 80% of the speed that he, that he has been
- 27:59in the past or 75, that's, that's pretty good.
- 28:02I think he was about 50% last year speed wise.
- 28:05So if he can improve that, but he looks like he's motivated.
- 28:09I, I'm not going to say this, this is last year.
- 28:13I, I can't, I can't go there. Too many people have told me
- 28:16that, you know, he, he just, he's going to have to be drug
- 28:19away, you know, from, from playing football.
- 28:21And I wouldn't be shocked if he came back in 26.
- 28:24Puts even more on there. What do we know about the return
- 28:26of Rashi Rice well? Everything that I've heard,
- 28:32neither one of his court cases have have appeared in front of a
- 28:37Texas jury or a court or a judge.
- 28:41His, his attorney is a Democrat state senator and he's been
- 28:44pretty busy in, in Congress. And I, I think what's what's
- 28:48happening is the, the, they'll get a plea deal for the
- 28:52accident, but that may not come until some point in the season
- 28:55or maybe in the offseason. The the three or four people
- 28:59that are suing him, you know, for the accident themselves, you
- 29:04know, the civil suit, those haven't gone in front of a
- 29:06judge. And I'm assuming they're going
- 29:08to settle. Now.
- 29:09Listen, I don't I'm not going to give them any free advice, but
- 29:11you know, he's going to get a new contract at some point.
- 29:14So the longer this takes, probably the better situation
- 29:17for these people are trying to settle.
- 29:18But he's got a great lawyer. He knows the Texas court.
- 29:22They're still backed up that I don't think we're going to see a
- 29:25courthouse potentially until the spring of next year.
- 29:28And then maybe he has a suspension.
- 29:29But the longer this goes on, yeah, first I heard eight games
- 29:32and six games and likely 4. It can end up being two games
- 29:35when it's all said and done if two or three years pass.
- 29:38So you mentioned the stadium and the government has been busy
- 29:43here in the special session that they put together.
- 29:45So hundreds of millions of dollars for the Royals and for
- 29:48the Chiefs, new stadiums, upgrades, whatever it turns out
- 29:51to be. Give us a read kind of what
- 29:53you're hearing about this front and and specifically for the
- 29:55Chiefs, what this means for them going forward.
- 29:58Well, the Missouri legislation, it's basically they, they're
- 30:02going to cover 50% of the cost, which means that the Chiefs have
- 30:06to come up with the other 50% or they have to find a partner.
- 30:10A Kansas has offered 7075% that includes a Dunham Stadium and a
- 30:15casino attachment. That's going to cover a lot of
- 30:19those, some of those costs. So the Chiefs won't have to put
- 30:20up as much money. Maybe 10% of the total package
- 30:24is what they would have to invest.
- 30:25Everything else will be covered. And of course they'll do TF LS
- 30:27and they'll get all for money back times too.
- 30:29So I think, I think if I was Clark Hunt, I respect the
- 30:34sentimentality of Arrowhead. I don't know if I want a
- 30:37retrofit Arrowhead, give it a few more options, maybe some
- 30:42money generating options, a little bit better experience,
- 30:45you know, maybe put another tower up.
- 30:47But you're talking about adding on to concrete.
- 30:49That's from the 70s. And even though they had this
- 30:52master renovations where they had to basically gut the
- 30:55majority of everything underneath the stadium to hold
- 30:58up the new structures, you know, I don't know.
- 31:00I mean, if I'm getting a shiny new Dome and I'm getting a
- 31:04hotel, shop, restaurants, a training facility, the ability
- 31:09to host the Super Bowl, a Final Four, the rotation of the NFL
- 31:13combine, why would you say that, Arrowhead, other than the
- 31:17sentimentality of mom and dad? And I get it.
- 31:19I'm not going to be upset if he doesn't do it.
- 31:21But the decision has to be made by June 30th.
- 31:25Candace has made it very clear they're not giving out any
- 31:27extensions for either the Chiefs or the Royals.
- 31:30So I think right now I give a light edge to Kansas City, KS
- 31:35because they're putting up more money.
- 31:37I think in Missouri, they're still going to have to have some
- 31:39sort of public vote and you know, that's going to that's
- 31:42going to probably hurt their chances unless they are very
- 31:46creative. Now, the Chiefs met with
- 31:47Missouri over this past weekend. I'm told they're going to meet
- 31:50with Kansas again this week. Everybody has the proposals.
- 31:53Everybody has to sign, draw the drawing.
- 31:56And I think it's facility is going to look great no matter
- 31:58what direction they go. And then the Royals real fast.
- 32:01They're looking at Lee and Leawood, KS near 119th and Nall,
- 32:06which is basically where the Town Center complex is in
- 32:08Johnson County. They've also been approached by
- 32:10by Wyandotte County as well. I personally think they'll find
- 32:15a slot downtown. I think.
- 32:17I think John Sherman wants to keep their world downtown, but
- 32:21they bought the lease at 119th and and and naw, which is the
- 32:26old Sprint and T-Mobile can and the T-Mobile campus.
- 32:29They are now the landlord. That's where the their new
- 32:32stadium is projected to go. So it wouldn't shock me if both
- 32:35left for Kansas. I think this sentimentality, you
- 32:40know, has a chance for Missouri to to somehow pull a rabbit out
- 32:43of the hat. Good stuff, Nick Athen, Chiefs
- 32:45blitz.com. Chiefs blitz.com for Nick.
- 32:48Nick, thanks for jumping on. Talk to you in the weeks ahead.
- 32:50Thanks bud. All right, guys.
- 32:52Appreciate you both. Yeah, good to talk to you.
- 32:54chiefsplits.com, chiefsplits.com Trench plays of the day.
- 32:58They're coming up next. I got a little something for you
- 33:00here just in for Major League Baseball, the first players for
- 33:04the 2025 All Star celebrity softball game are here.
- 33:11It took me a while before I. Yes.
- 33:14I was able to oh, I've heard of that person.
- 33:16So let's play this game. This is celebrities.
- 33:19These are. Celebrities How many people are
- 33:20on the list? 123-456-7811.
- 33:23And you got how many before you heard of 1?
- 33:25I got down to #6. And I'm 20 years older than you,
- 33:30yes. OK, go young Miko.
- 33:33No Drewski, No Quavo, no no Aladio.
- 33:41Curion, Mike Towers, Jordan Chiles.
- 33:46Keep going. That's the gymnast.
- 33:48That was the one I knew. And didn't know that one.
- 33:50Wissen who? Wissen.
- 33:53No, Could be Wissen. There's no.
- 33:55H in him either or her. Jerry Lorenzo.
- 34:00These are celebrities. These are celebrities, according
- 34:02to Major League Baseball. No.
- 34:04CC Sabathia. OK.
- 34:06Ding, Ding, Ding. Jenny Fitch.
- 34:08Yeah. And Natasha?
- 34:09Watt Hopefully those two will pitch.
- 34:11That's that's the I I know turned them down before they got
- 34:15to those folks. I know we're old, I get it and
- 34:18and the celebrity softball game is not made for us.
- 34:19Right, right. When did they play it?
- 34:22Well, the day before the weekend of they play.
- 34:25It the day of the Home Run Derby.
- 34:27They broadcast it after the Home Run Derby.
- 34:29So they have the home. OK I see.
- 34:31So they play it and then they replay the the Home Run Derby
- 34:34and then that comes on afterwards.
- 34:36Guessing not a lot of people will stick around to watch with
- 34:38this group of celebrities. Not our demographic.
- 34:41No, this is not the one you're going to be hitting the older
- 34:44demographic for. Although there's nothing on on
- 34:48that Monday other than that. Listen, listen.
- 34:51What day is that, do you know? Sounds like a good day to take
- 34:54off. I wouldn't do that to you and I
- 34:57hope you wouldn't do it to me. I'd be off that day.
- 34:59I was sports radio network. Miller Condon 10 before 2, top
- 35:14of the hour, the drive comes up. Heather and Lucas take you till
- 35:175, then overtime. Iowa 5 until 6.
- 35:21Hawk Central tonight, Chad Leistakow joined by Phil Parker.
- 35:26For you Hawkeye fans out there, Hawk Central tonight, six to
- 35:29seven. Leistakow and Phil Parker.
- 35:32That's the program at six. No Hawk Central next week as
- 35:36Chad is on vacation so we've got baseball tonight.
- 35:40Is there a WNBA game? Maybe 1?
- 35:42There's yeah, I think there was 1.
- 35:44I think so. And it wasn't a very good one,
- 35:46if memory serves. I am intrigued.
- 35:48I want to watch tonight, and I wonder if you're going to get
- 35:51there because, well, hockey's done.
- 35:53You sadly, I guess there's no basketball withdrawals.
- 35:55I know you'll be watching a lot of Major League Baseball.
- 35:58Will you find your way over to Arkansas?
- 36:00LSU tonight? Say it's intriguing.
- 36:03Say it's 22 bottom of the. Game.
- 36:06What time is it? Starts at 6, so like 9:00 you
- 36:09know it's getting late. I'll check the Twitter machine.
- 36:12Yeah, the Twitter. What you're going to watch?
- 36:14It's definitely there now. I like Arkansas in the game and
- 36:17not enough to fire their -122 at.
- 36:19LSU was the preflop favorite, right?
- 36:22For the series started, they were favored.
- 36:23And Arkansas is going to have to double dip them now because they
- 36:26won game one back in Pool play. So now Arkansas has got to come
- 36:30back, beat them today. If they do, they'll play again
- 36:32tomorrow. Winner goes to the final.
- 36:34I know you have a bet on Louisville at 28 to 1.
- 36:37They're in trouble, so they have have to win this game or they're
- 36:39done. They have to double dip coastal.
- 36:42Well, they're not going to get to the second opportunity.
- 36:44What are they down 6? Nothing. 6 Zip Yeah, that's
- 36:47early. I got it on in here and yeah,
- 36:49right away saw Boo Boy. Just holding that 28 to 1 ticket
- 36:53though. I'm excited.
- 36:54To hear you man, I love those. You actually got to run.
- 36:57For your money, got to the final four right?
- 36:59Final four with the 28 to 1 ticket.
- 37:01Not too shabby on. Their money.
- 37:03All right, So what are you going to bet?
- 37:04So you're going to. I'm sitting out Arkansas, LSU,
- 37:07OK, but I will be watching just I only have two bets tonight and
- 37:11it's weird because how? Did you do yesterday?
- 37:12Yesterday. I know you had the Panthers.
- 37:14Did have the Panthers. We had the Panthers two
- 37:17different ways. Laid the 1 1/2 and got the plus
- 37:20160 on that one and then the -150 on the money line hit the
- 37:24Reds. We lost the Rays, we lost the
- 37:27Mets, and we got the win with my Louisville Cardinal yesterday
- 37:30plus 192 against the Beavers. That was a great game you never
- 37:34got over there did. You.
- 37:35No, but I saw the kid that booted the ball.
- 37:37I mean good God it looked looked like Buckner.
- 37:40And he did that before in the game, the other game that they
- 37:43had lost, really. Yeah.
- 37:45Then he got on and he scored what turned about to be the
- 37:48winning run. Still plus .9 units we'll take.
- 37:52It take it, that's a, that's a winning day.
- 37:54Stack it up, two baseball games, 2 favorites.
- 37:56Yeah, Phillies -168 Suarez is getting the ball against at a
- 38:01Mazer. Like, how do I know that name?
- 38:04Former Iowa Hawkeye pitcher Adam Mazer got called back up by the
- 38:07Fish. He'll be going tonight.
- 38:09Going to be fading the Hawk in that 1.
- 38:11And in my second pick of the day, it will be the Nationals
- 38:16who are not playing well. Mitchell Parker, though, I like
- 38:18the lefty against the Rockies. Rockies.
- 38:21Red hot, I hear ya. Three in a row, we're gonna lay
- 38:25it -1. 50 you know it's too bad it didn't work out the way it
- 38:28did because scuba's pitching today for the tigers Skeens
- 38:32tomorrow Pittsburgh is in Detroit right yes and Haney
- 38:36Scuba's a pretty good match up, but Skeens Scubal would have
- 38:40been appointment TV and Skeens goes tomorrow and scuba goes
- 38:44today your. WNBA game tonight is Phoenix at
- 38:48Connecticut. So Connecticut back-to-back.
- 38:51And a 14 1/2 number for the Mercury who've been waiting at
- 38:55Mohegan Sun Think they're at the crap stable last night.
- 38:58I don't know what they were doing but playing some.
- 38:59Slots, do they stay at the casino, you think?
- 39:03Yeah, it's not like there's a ton of options I.
- 39:05Wouldn't think so. No, no, probably do.
- 39:09Why wouldn't they? That's going to do it for us.
- 39:12So the what was the number 1414? And 1/2.
