- 0:00Speaker 1: The head coach of the Rancho Bernardo Broncos, Eric Weddle,
- 0:03Speaker 1: kind enough to join us.
- 0:05Speaker 2: E.W., back in the USA?
- 0:08Speaker 3: I'm back.
- 0:10Speaker 2: How did Italy go?
- 0:10Speaker 3: I'm back. It was good. Makes you appreciate the land
- 0:16Speaker 3: of the free and the home of the brave. We
- 0:18Speaker 3: missed America. Italy's cool, but I'm glad to be back.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Glad to be here. Back with the team, it was
- 0:28Speaker 3: great to be there for Silver and her teammates. And
- 0:33Speaker 3: they didn't do as well as they could have done, unfortunately,
- 0:37Speaker 3: and didn't make the finals on Sunday. But it was
- 0:40Speaker 3: a good experience and one that they'll remember for a lifetime.
- 0:45Speaker 3: But it's back to work.
- 0:48Speaker 2: And your team won without you, right?
- 0:51Speaker 3: They won without me. It goes to show you, you...
- 0:55Speaker 3: You set a good culture and standard, and you coach
- 0:58Speaker 3: your coaches up, and then you just let it go.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I mean, I came back, you know, I met with it.
- 1:03Speaker 3: You get a kick out of this. Met with the leaders.
- 1:06Speaker 3: I was like, hey, I just want to check in.
- 1:07Speaker 3: We've got a bye this week, which is much needed.
- 1:10Speaker 3: I was like, hey, I just want to check in.
- 1:12Speaker 3: How did everything go last week? The flow, what you
- 1:16Speaker 3: guys liked, didn't like, et cetera. And one of the
- 1:19Speaker 3: guys goes, hey, coach, don't take this the wrong way,
- 1:21Speaker 3: but you know, we actually, it was much more loose
- 1:25Speaker 3: than we kind of had a lot more fun without
- 1:28Speaker 3: you around. So I was like, Hey man, it's good.
- 1:31Speaker 3: It's good to know. It means I need to lighten
- 1:33Speaker 3: up a little bit and not be such a heartache
- 1:34Speaker 3: all the time.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Oh, so you're more, you're more Kyle Whittingham than Morgan Scali.
- 1:39Speaker 4: It sounds like, well, you know, I just, you know,
- 1:45Speaker 4: I am who I am. So when, when things aren't
- 1:48Speaker 4: going awry, I'm going to tell you.
- 1:50Speaker 3: And I expect, I expect things to go a certain way.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I could have fun too now, but having fun is
- 1:57Speaker 3: kicking people's faces in the ground, not having false start
- 2:01Speaker 3: penalties and discipline and, you know, those types of issues. So,
- 2:05Speaker 3: you know, we all have things to work on. I'm
- 2:08Speaker 3: not perfect.
- 2:10Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:11Speaker 1: 33 to zero drubbing of the Aggies for this Utah
- 2:15Speaker 1: football team last weekend. Again, it was a home game,
- 2:19Speaker 1: Rice-Echo Stadium packed out, beautiful sunny day in Salt Lake City,
- 2:24Speaker 1: and a really clean first half for the offense and
- 2:27Speaker 1: the defense. Both things got a little bit funky in
- 2:29Speaker 1: the second half, but we can get to that. What
- 2:32Speaker 1: were your thoughts on the game, especially that first half?
- 2:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I was getting kicked off about 9.45
- 2:38Speaker 3: my time, 9.30, 9.45. So I stayed up and watched it.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Lucky enough, I was able to stream it, so... It was,
- 2:48Speaker 3: I mean, just the efficiency, even though we at times
- 2:53Speaker 3: had some third and longs, I believe, we were able
- 2:56Speaker 3: to keep the drives going. And, man, I was just
- 2:59Speaker 3: really impressed on some of the throws Dev made, especially
- 3:04Speaker 3: on the sideline. The one over the defender was probably
- 3:08Speaker 3: like a, gosh, a 20-yard completion on the far sideline,
- 3:14Speaker 3: opposite hash. And I'm just like, man, that is an
- 3:19Speaker 3: incredible throw. And so I felt just I like the competitiveness.
- 3:26Speaker 3: I like the energy. You know, Utah State did some things.
- 3:31Speaker 3: They're a good, well-coached team. Like, you know, who did
- 3:35Speaker 3: they play a couple weeks before? Washington, at Washington. And they,
- 3:38Speaker 3: you know, we made them look way worse. So people
- 3:42Speaker 3: keep talking about, who we played and this, that, and
- 3:45Speaker 3: the other. We just smoked Arkansas, and Georgia just plays
- 3:50Speaker 3: them and plays them the same. So does Georgia get
- 3:53Speaker 3: looked at the same as us, or is it because
- 3:56Speaker 3: Georgia has the name and the championships that they get
- 3:58Speaker 3: the pass? So I think every week that passes, every
- 4:03Speaker 3: week that we play well, obviously there's room for improvement,
- 4:06Speaker 3: but we continue to show people are realizing that, like
- 4:11Speaker 3: I said before the season, I think this could be
- 4:13Speaker 3: a special year. we got to go do it, but
- 4:16Speaker 3: there's no reason why we can't continue to climb and
- 4:20Speaker 3: show what we're about.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I put yourself back on this Utah football team and
- 4:25Speaker 1: know that you've played three home games on the bounce, right?
- 4:28Speaker 1: Back to back to back at home. And now you're
- 4:30Speaker 1: going to start big 12 play. And it's your first
- 4:33Speaker 1: road game of the year. And there are new starters
- 4:35Speaker 1: on this team. There are guys who are important players
- 4:37Speaker 1: on this team who haven't done this exact thing. They
- 4:40Speaker 1: haven't done a lot of this, at least, uh, What
- 4:43Speaker 1: do you do to make sure guys are the same
- 4:45Speaker 1: and perform the same on the road game from a
- 4:47Speaker 1: leadership perspective as they did at home?
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, keep the main thing the main thing.
- 4:55Speaker 3: You try to keep the same routine. Like, even though
- 4:59Speaker 3: the home game, you're at home, you're still doing the
- 5:02Speaker 3: same routine as if you're on the road, right? Like,
- 5:05Speaker 3: you'll still have the same night meetings, you'll still have
- 5:07Speaker 3: the same– team movie. If they do that, you'll sub
- 5:11Speaker 3: team dinner, you'll wake up, you'll have your walkthroughs and,
- 5:14Speaker 3: and businesses will be the same. Yeah. You're not in your,
- 5:17Speaker 3: you're the normal hotel room, but you're still in a
- 5:19Speaker 3: hotel room. Uh, and so I think, I think it
- 5:23Speaker 3: comes out, comes more as, as the leadership and, uh,
- 5:28Speaker 3: you know, those guys have been in big games on
- 5:30Speaker 3: the road, uh, just reminding them like, Hey, we're here.
- 5:34Speaker 3: to get a job done let's do what we do
- 5:37Speaker 3: right I think it's supposed to be like raining and
- 5:40Speaker 3: this and that and everyone's trying to hype up Iowa
- 5:42Speaker 3: State has a chance like they don't have a chance
- 5:46Speaker 3: let's go out and and treat them as such uh
- 5:50Speaker 3: and play our style football like let's continue to play
- 5:53Speaker 3: like I know we had the second half of Utah
- 5:54Speaker 3: State was kind of like uh ugly in some areas
- 5:59Speaker 3: uh let's just try to clean that up and continue
- 6:01Speaker 3: to try to strive for four quarters of football.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Wet games, muddy games, gross games are good for, you know,
- 6:10Speaker 1: slow guys like me, for real athletes like you. Did
- 6:14Speaker 1: you enjoy a wet game or a muddy game?
- 6:20Speaker 3: Defensively, yeah, because, well, it just depends. Like, if you're
- 6:25Speaker 3: on grass or turf, I don't know, Iowa State, if
- 6:27Speaker 3: it's turf or grass.
- 6:28Speaker 2: It's grass.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Yeah, so that could, honestly, that could affect a lot. Uh,
- 6:35Speaker 3: now that you say that just for the receivers getting
- 6:38Speaker 3: in and out of the breaks, uh, the advantages, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 3: where the ball is coming and the time is coming.
- 6:45Speaker 3: So being able to, to finagle and, and shift how
- 6:51Speaker 3: you run your route to make sure that you're getting
- 6:52Speaker 3: in and out of breaks. You're not slipping where the
- 6:54Speaker 3: defense you're reacting. So it's much more difficult understanding what
- 6:58Speaker 3: type of cleats and spikes. If, if I need longer
- 7:00Speaker 3: cleats or studs, making sure that we have that available, uh,
- 7:06Speaker 3: But it just becomes much more of a dirty run-the-ball
- 7:12Speaker 3: type game. That's who we are. We should be confident
- 7:17Speaker 3: going in. I think we're confident anyways. I think it
- 7:20Speaker 3: stems from our head coach and how we respect our opponent,
- 7:24Speaker 3: but also we understand that we fear nobody and we
- 7:28Speaker 3: are confident. uh, we are the ones that put them,
- 7:31Speaker 3: put the, put the gas pedal down and don't, don't
- 7:34Speaker 3: change who we are. So, uh, but it can affect it. How,
- 7:40Speaker 3: how are you going to handle the rain? Do you
- 7:42Speaker 3: still wear gloves? Do you not, uh, defensively like opportunities
- 7:47Speaker 3: come and then you, it slips through your hands. Like,
- 7:49Speaker 3: so you definitely got to handle it and we'll see
- 7:52Speaker 3: how they do. It's the unknown.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Uh, As a coach, how do you handle, like, what
- 7:59Speaker 1: is the conversation like with distributing touches and making sure
- 8:03Speaker 1: you're getting the ball in the hands of the guys,
- 8:05Speaker 1: your playmakers? This is a good problem for Utah to have,
- 8:09Speaker 1: but it is something that needs to be figured out
- 8:11Speaker 1: in Big 12 play where, you know, like last week
- 8:16Speaker 1: in a really nice offensive performance, Weishan only had like
- 8:20Speaker 1: 13 touches instead of, I think, the 20 or so.
- 8:23Speaker 2: That we're going to want to see him get. And
- 8:25Speaker 2: that's fine.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Cause you know, didn't play fourth quarter, that sort of thing.
- 8:28Speaker 1: But you know, a week before that it was Braden
- 8:31Speaker 1: Pagan didn't really get involved in the offensive game plan.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And there are some guys that it feels like you
- 8:37Speaker 1: probably want to get them the ball every single game
- 8:40Speaker 1: on a relatively consistent basis. As long as the team
- 8:43Speaker 1: is winning, that's the most important thing, but to maximize
- 8:46Speaker 1: your entire season, do you have to get certain guys,
- 8:49Speaker 1: the ball multiple times a game?
- 8:51Speaker 2: How do you manage that? as a coach?
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:55Speaker 3: I mean, that's, that's a very, very good point. And
- 8:59Speaker 3: in question, like for me, in my, in my opinion,
- 9:03Speaker 3: I try to stress that the ball finds out, finds
- 9:06Speaker 3: the ball goes where the defense defense dictates where the
- 9:09Speaker 3: ball goes, especially in the passing game. So it then
- 9:13Speaker 3: incentivizes always running my routes hard and knowing like, Hey, yeah,
- 9:16Speaker 3: I know I'm primary in this concept, but depending on
- 9:20Speaker 3: the defense and the structure and how they cover it,
- 9:22Speaker 3: like I could end up not getting the ball. So
- 9:24Speaker 3: I got to make sure I run my route hard
- 9:25Speaker 3: no matter what, because whether I'm one, two, three, or
- 9:28Speaker 3: even the check down, like I could be getting the
- 9:31Speaker 3: ball in this place. So I try to, I try
- 9:33Speaker 3: to emphasize that, but you do have your studs and
- 9:37Speaker 3: you always like when I script, I try to, I
- 9:42Speaker 3: try to make sure like I get those guys that
- 9:45Speaker 3: you identify, get a touch or two within the first 10.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Just to get them going, get them in a rhythm.
- 9:51Speaker 3: How are they going to defend how are they going
- 9:53Speaker 3: to defend pagan right like how are they going to
- 9:55Speaker 3: load the box up on way sean like those are
- 9:58Speaker 3: the things you're trying to identify how they handle emotions
- 10:00Speaker 3: and shifts and and reloads and all those types of
- 10:03Speaker 3: things but for me i think it's a positive when
- 10:07Speaker 3: way sean doesn't have to to get 20 25 touches
- 10:10Speaker 3: in a game knowing that this season is going to
- 10:12Speaker 3: be a long season we know like we're going to
- 10:15Speaker 3: rely on him and know that we need a strong
- 10:18Speaker 3: running game to win a championship. So I almost look
- 10:21Speaker 3: at it as a positive that we didn't have to
- 10:22Speaker 3: use them a bunch, but also know like guys want
- 10:25Speaker 3: the ball there. It's not like so much of a
- 10:28Speaker 3: selfish desire. It's just often the guys want the ball.
- 10:31Speaker 3: They want to make an impact. So you gotta, you
- 10:33Speaker 3: gotta make sure you tote that line of keeping them
- 10:37Speaker 3: engaged and encouraging them. And it seems like there is no,
- 10:41Speaker 3: drama per se of me type like i'm not getting
- 10:44Speaker 3: the ball like you see you see those runs happening
- 10:47Speaker 3: birds like running down 50 yards trying to get a
- 10:49Speaker 3: block and pagans blocking the perimeter and like you're seeing
- 10:52Speaker 3: just so much great team football that i think that
- 10:56Speaker 3: is who we are and it's not about how many
- 10:58Speaker 3: touches so at the moment i don't feel like it's
- 11:00Speaker 3: an issue but as a coach you want to make
- 11:03Speaker 3: sure those guys are making a difference, and you keep
- 11:06Speaker 3: them in the game. You want to keep those guys
- 11:08Speaker 3: mentally in the game. You don't want to go a
- 11:10Speaker 3: quarter or two without touching the ball if you're one
- 11:12Speaker 3: of our studs. It just doesn't make sense.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Some of this is dictated when you're still in an
- 11:18Speaker 1: early season by who you have played. So I don't
- 11:22Speaker 1: want to read too much into it, but Iowa State
- 11:25Speaker 1: is right now the least productive passing offense in the
- 11:27Speaker 1: Big 12 Conference. They've only thrown 54 passes in three games.
- 11:33Speaker 1: You're a defensive back playing against this team and knowing
- 11:37Speaker 1: that that has been the trend so far.
- 11:39Speaker 2: How do you prepare for this game?
- 11:42Speaker 3: Well, you, you probably understand that it's going to, I'm
- 11:44Speaker 3: going to be on an Island, the majority of the game.
- 11:46Speaker 3: So I got to be locked in every single play.
- 11:49Speaker 3: The fear, the fear I always had as a defense
- 11:52Speaker 3: and a defensive coordinator is I don't really like selling
- 11:55Speaker 3: out when I know a team's going to run maybe
- 11:57Speaker 3: 70% of the game. I like to be sound. I
- 11:59Speaker 3: like to be structured and play good football. When you
- 12:04Speaker 3: start bringing those safeties down and now you're going zero
- 12:08Speaker 3: or you're bringing the post player down to get that
- 12:11Speaker 3: extra defender because you're struggling with the run, it just
- 12:13Speaker 3: opens up for BS plays on the perimeter and that
- 12:17Speaker 3: they have no business doing if we just play normal defense.
- 12:20Speaker 3: So that's what I would– I'm always a little nervous
- 12:24Speaker 3: when we sell out to stop the run because it
- 12:26Speaker 3: is a heavy run team that you're leaving those corners
- 12:28Speaker 3: out to drive. They can just get lucky, right, like
- 12:31Speaker 3: a lucky tip, and the guy makes a catch for
- 12:33Speaker 3: a 40-yard gain just because, you know, he's playing press
- 12:36Speaker 3: man all game. You know, that's not– you don't want
- 12:39Speaker 3: to give easy things up. You want to make them
- 12:41Speaker 3: work for it philosophically-wise. But I would just– make sure
- 12:47Speaker 3: our corners are locked in and understand, like, I may
- 12:49Speaker 3: not get help much this game. I got to be
- 12:51Speaker 3: on point every single snap. And that one play could
- 12:54Speaker 3: be the difference. It's that way anyways for corners, but
- 12:58Speaker 3: through scheme and different coverages, you do have some leniency
- 13:02Speaker 3: on I'm just over the top, I'm bailing out, I'm
- 13:05Speaker 3: playing the flat. But in this type of game, you
- 13:08Speaker 3: have to take that mindset. Like, I'm not letting one
- 13:11Speaker 3: catch get on me.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Eric Weller is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell
- 13:16Speaker 1: Show talking all things football.
- 13:17Speaker 2: We started with the Utes.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I want to transition here a little bit to the
- 13:20Speaker 1: National Football League. This one, I know there's not a
- 13:25Speaker 1: lot of love here in the Salt Lake City market
- 13:27Speaker 1: for Caleb Williams because of his time at USC and
- 13:30Speaker 1: his antics and things like that. You have to tell
- 13:33Speaker 1: me how guys in the NFL are processing and talking
- 13:36Speaker 1: about him weeping his way off the field on a
- 13:39Speaker 1: cart for a hamstring strain. It's the, I mean, it's been,
- 13:42Speaker 1: it's been turned into a meme online plenty, but inside
- 13:46Speaker 1: of NFL conversations and locker rooms and group chats with
- 13:50Speaker 1: guys from the league, how has something like this handled?
- 13:55Speaker 3: I mean, honestly, it's, it's just embarrassing. It's, I, I was,
- 14:03Speaker 3: I was, I was shocked when I heard it was
- 14:07Speaker 3: a grade one hamstring strain. Like I'm not, I'm not
- 14:12Speaker 3: the toughest guy in the world, but I, I played
- 14:14Speaker 3: a lot of my career with a grade one hammy.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Like everybody's hammies hurt. I've torn a hamstring before and it,
- 14:22Speaker 3: it wasn't, it wasn't like, I've, we just never seen
- 14:26Speaker 3: something like this. I mean, it's, for a lot of
- 14:30Speaker 3: guys and just everybody is, is just taken back. Like
- 14:33Speaker 3: you've made that much of a scene over a hamstring
- 14:39Speaker 3: and it's not even like torn off the bone. I
- 14:43Speaker 3: could see like being in that much pain, but it
- 14:46Speaker 3: was a, it was a mild strain. Like you could
- 14:48Speaker 3: have kept playing. I'm shocked. I mean, I've just, I
- 14:52Speaker 3: don't know how he comes back from this, honestly, as,
- 14:56Speaker 3: as the perception, like he is a stud and he's
- 15:02Speaker 3: a really good quarterback. I'm not going to say he's
- 15:03Speaker 3: a great quarterback. I think he does some crazy things
- 15:06Speaker 3: and he gets away with it. But how do you
- 15:09Speaker 3: come back from this? It's Paul Pierce 2.0. At least
- 15:14Speaker 3: Pierce came back out of a wheelchair with nothing wrong
- 15:18Speaker 3: with his knee. I mean, at that point you come,
- 15:20Speaker 3: you go back in the locker room. How do you
- 15:21Speaker 3: not come back in the game? That's, that's the more
- 15:25Speaker 3: telling thing. Like, You got carted off. We all thought
- 15:28Speaker 3: it was an Achilles, even though we didn't see that movement.
- 15:33Speaker 3: And then you don't come back? I mean, goodness gracious,
- 15:37Speaker 3: how soft is this generation that these injuries? I mean,
- 15:43Speaker 3: I don't want to go off tangent on just the
- 15:47Speaker 3: way things are nowadays, but you got guys so quick.
- 15:53Speaker 3: To go to the doctor and get a doctor's note
- 15:56Speaker 3: to not have them play than just tough it out
- 15:58Speaker 3: and play. Like, when did it turn that I'm going
- 16:02Speaker 3: to do whatever it takes to play rather than I
- 16:06Speaker 3: don't want to play? Like, I don't understand that mindset.
- 16:12Speaker 3: But that's like a lot of kids and athletes nowadays,
- 16:16Speaker 3: and it carries over to the NFL. All right.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I made the point on Monday when we found out
- 16:21Speaker 1: that it wasn't anything serious and he had that reaction
- 16:24Speaker 1: to it. I was like, he has now put himself
- 16:27Speaker 1: in a situation where he almost can't get back onto
- 16:31Speaker 1: the field as quickly as he should because he's got
- 16:34Speaker 1: to pretend that the hamstring is a bigger problem to
- 16:37Speaker 1: justify getting carted off. Like he almost has to be like, well,
- 16:42Speaker 1: I'm fine, but I got to make it look like
- 16:44Speaker 1: I wasn't overreacting. So I got to miss, I'll miss
- 16:47Speaker 1: one more game and just, then I'll come back after that.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I'm like, man, you've really, you've really shot yourself in
- 16:52Speaker 1: the foot there.
- 16:53Speaker 3: I mean, you, you have a valid point. You have
- 16:56Speaker 3: a valid point. I mean, people are saying he'll be
- 16:58Speaker 3: back this week and that's just like, it's, It's crazy.
- 17:04Speaker 2: It's probably the right thing to do.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Come back this week and just face the music that
- 17:07Speaker 1: you overreacted and you get made fun of.
- 17:09Speaker 3: Seriously, I mean, hey, man, I thought my leg was dead. Seriously,
- 17:15Speaker 3: I didn't know. When I looked down, I didn't think
- 17:17Speaker 3: my leg was attached to my hip, so I was like,
- 17:20Speaker 3: I freaked out. I'm sorry. I freaked out.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Did you ever get fined for, like, a celebration or
- 17:29Speaker 1: an obscene gesture.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Or anything like that in the NFL?
- 17:34Speaker 3: No, definitely not.
- 17:35Speaker 2: Definitely not. You saw what happened to your boy Juice, right?
- 17:40Speaker 3: It's getting out of control. Like, I'm all for, like, man,
- 17:48Speaker 3: and then at the, like, I try to teach my guys, like,
- 17:53Speaker 3: you celebrate with your teammates. Like, it's respecting your opponent,
- 17:57Speaker 3: but I don't mind celebrating and having fun with your teammates.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Just don't direct it at your opponent. I don't like
- 18:04Speaker 3: to see that. I don't want to see that. Because
- 18:06Speaker 3: the game will humble you in an instant, and you
- 18:08Speaker 3: don't need to put that in the air. And it's
- 18:11Speaker 3: just not good football. But when you're doing something like–
- 18:15Speaker 3: you're taking the fun, the little fun that we have,
- 18:19Speaker 3: you're taking it away over stupid stuff. It's like the
- 18:24Speaker 3: umpire– given a ball to that pitcher because his hat
- 18:28Speaker 3: was crooked.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Yes.
- 18:31Speaker 3: And then like, now that the whole team's cracking in
- 18:34Speaker 3: their hat, like, what are we doing? Like, are we really,
- 18:38Speaker 3: you're really going to put your foot down? Like, this
- 18:40Speaker 3: is the mountain you're going to stand on because of
- 18:42Speaker 3: the hatch cricket. Like you're going to really make it.
- 18:45Speaker 3: So guys just don't have fun out there. Like you
- 18:49Speaker 3: have to have fun playing football. That's when you play
- 18:51Speaker 3: your best. And that's, the joy of football is having fun.
- 18:55Speaker 3: So I don't know. I think it's a joke. And
- 18:58Speaker 3: sometimes people get in these positions where they just want
- 19:02Speaker 3: to pop out their chest. And so just knowing where
- 19:04Speaker 3: they stand, like the game's not about you ref, like
- 19:07Speaker 3: just let them do their thing. They're not affecting anybody.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Speaker 0 7th, for those who don't know what I'm
- 19:11Speaker 1: talking about against the dolphins, 49ers fullback, Kyle use chick.
- 19:17Speaker 1: He He did his signature celebration that he's been doing
- 19:21Speaker 1: for years where he was chugging. He's not really chugging anything.
- 19:25Speaker 1: It looks like he's drinking something. He's drinking his juice
- 19:28Speaker 1: because they call him juice. And the NFL fined him
- 19:31Speaker 1: 15 grand for engaging in offensive demonstration for imitating chugging
- 19:37Speaker 1: a beer, which is like, no, it's.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Juice, man. It's imaginary is what it is. NFL. Nobody
- 19:44Speaker 2: knows what it is. It's chocolate milk. My favorite drink.
- 19:47Speaker 3: And even more, you're selling alcohol.
- 19:49Speaker 4: In the stadium.
- 19:50Speaker 3: They got billboards everywhere of alcohol. And you're going to
- 19:54Speaker 3: find a guy for, you know what he's doing, and
- 19:57Speaker 3: you know his nickname. Like, that should be rescinded out
- 20:00Speaker 3: the gate because it's a mistake. But it's like, it's
- 20:03Speaker 3: so hypocritical. Like, the NFL, like, they want to say...
- 20:07Speaker 3: Don't gamble, but every gambling resource business is funding the
- 20:14Speaker 3: NFL and funding these owners. So it's like, what are
- 20:17Speaker 3: we doing? You got rules for the, but not for me.
- 20:21Speaker 3: It's typical, typical NFL garbage.
- 20:25Speaker 1: By the way, Kyle Ustik's response was, dude, I don't
- 20:28Speaker 1: even drink beer.
- 20:30Speaker 2: So that's.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 2: I would feel very upset. I don't drink beer either.
- 20:35Speaker 1: If somebody fined me for pretending to drink beer, I'd
- 20:38Speaker 1: be like, dude, I don't even in real life drink beer.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Even when I actually have a beverage in my hand,
- 20:43Speaker 1: it's not beer. It's got to be annoying.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, it makes sense. The NFL does a
- 20:51Speaker 3: lot of dumb stuff, and they do a lot of
- 20:53Speaker 3: things that don't make sense. Yeah.
- 20:56Speaker 2: All right, last thing before I let you go.
- 20:58Speaker 1: The Giants are now going to be without Jackson Dart
- 21:02Speaker 1: for an extended period of time. Young player, you know,
- 21:06Speaker 1: season-ending knee surgery, bum deal for a guy that is
- 21:09Speaker 1: obviously a huge part of what a young team with
- 21:12Speaker 1: a new coach that you know well wants to do.
- 21:15Speaker 1: If you're in that locker room, how are you processing
- 21:17Speaker 1: the loss of your starting quarterback?
- 21:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it's a bummer. Obviously, he looks bad.
- 21:25Speaker 3: outstanding that first game. And this, not just like an
- 21:30Speaker 3: extending ascending quarterback in this league, but you could tell
- 21:33Speaker 3: like the guys like them, they play hard for him.
- 21:35Speaker 3: I don't know about if Abdul Carter likes them, but, uh,
- 21:39Speaker 3: you know, what, what he does and what he presents
- 21:42Speaker 3: on the field and just how, you know, he's, he's fun.
- 21:45Speaker 3: He's runs the ball hard and he's getting better at
- 21:48Speaker 3: throwing the ball. So it just is a huge hit,
- 21:50Speaker 3: huge hit. Now, uh, man, Winston looks so bad. So
- 21:56Speaker 3: if a week of practice, is that the guy or
- 21:59Speaker 3: is it someone else out there that they may want
- 22:02Speaker 3: to bring back? But I feel like the team is
- 22:04Speaker 3: good enough with a competent quarterback to be competitive, but
- 22:08Speaker 3: you don't want to make this season out to be
- 22:10Speaker 3: like a 4-13 season. If you don't have a quarterback,
- 22:16Speaker 3: that's what it could go to because if you don't
- 22:18Speaker 3: have a quarterback, you don't have a chance. But it's
- 22:20Speaker 3: really unfortunate. And as a player, you're just trying to
- 22:22Speaker 3: pick it up and try to keep the morale high,
- 22:25Speaker 3: especially as a veteran. And honestly, like, yeah, it could
- 22:30Speaker 3: get bad. But you still have to put on good
- 22:34Speaker 3: tape and you still have to, like, play well and
- 22:36Speaker 3: do your job. Because at the end of the year, like,
- 22:39Speaker 3: you have a tough year. Like, you'll be on the
- 22:41Speaker 3: chopping block, too, just because you didn't play well. It
- 22:44Speaker 3: doesn't matter what the quarterback situation is.
- 22:47Speaker 2: What are you going to do during the bye week?
- 22:51Speaker 3: Gage and I are going up to Cal tomorrow for
- 22:54Speaker 3: Cal Clemson. And so that should be a good atmosphere
- 23:00Speaker 3: to see what that's all about. And then chilling, watching
- 23:03Speaker 3: the game Saturday. We get back early Saturday morning so
- 23:05Speaker 3: I can watch the game and prep him for next week.
- 23:09Speaker 3: We've got Del Norte at home. It's a huge game there, 4-1.
- 23:12Speaker 3: We're a 4-1 league opponent. And got to get some
- 23:16Speaker 3: guys off of injury. So just get ahead on that
- 23:19Speaker 3: with prep and Enjoy the weekend with the fam. I
- 23:24Speaker 3: think all the kids don't really have anything this weekend,
- 23:26Speaker 3: so we'll be able to just hang out and spend
- 23:28Speaker 3: some time together.
- 23:29Speaker 1: The biggest part of me wants Gage to end up
- 23:31Speaker 1: as a Ute, but a very wicked little part of
- 23:34Speaker 1: me wants you to have to spend a lot of
- 23:36Speaker 1: time in Berkeley around a bunch of hyper-liberal people because
- 23:40Speaker 1: I know how much you would enjoy that.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Well, there's a reason I'm flying in right before the game,
- 23:48Speaker 3: going to the game, and then coming back. So, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 3: me meandering around Berkeley probably won't ever happen. And that's cool, man. Hey,
- 23:59Speaker 3: we all know our lanes and what we like to
- 24:05Speaker 3: be around. So me and some of that demographic not happening.
- 24:12Speaker 2: Love you, dude. Thanks for jumping on the show again.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 24:15Speaker 3: You got it, bro.
- 24:17Speaker 1: Eric Weddle, the Utah football legend. by week for the
- 24:22Speaker 1: broncos of rancho bernardo
