- 1:04All right, well now we're going to take a listen to today's episode of
- 1:11Nick Carter Nine Hours to Live. Yes, it's another case for that most
- 1:42famous of all manhunters, the detective was ability of solving crime is unequaled in
- 1:47the history of detective fiction. Nick Carter, Master Detective, The Night's Curious
- 1:52Adventure, Nine Hours to Live or Nick Carter and the Death House Mystery.
- 2:06And now a late news bulletin nine hours from now at the stroke of midnight,
- 2:10Johnny Waldron, the Blonde Face Killer, convicted of the murder of Missus
- 2:14Cornelia's feeling We'll go to the chair. Just thirty minutes ago, the condemned
- 2:17man made a last request. But Johnny Waldron did not ask for a sumptuous
- 2:22last veal in the tradition of the condemned, nor did he ask to see
- 2:25his nearest and dearest relative, his wife Laura. No, Johnny Waldron's request
- 2:30was from something much more dramatic. He has to see the great Detective Nick
- 2:35Carter. Now, just what this last minute conference means is anybody's guests,
- 2:38Perhaps a reprieve for Waldren, perhaps a clue as to what happened to the
- 2:43Fielding Jewels, which up to now have not even been found. At any
- 2:46rate, the Master Detective Nick Carter has consented to talk with Waldren and is
- 2:50probably at this very moment entering death House road. Keep tune to the station
- 2:53for further dramatic developments. Where you got him? He's a number one.
- 3:08We moved him to number one this morning. You see. It's as shorter
- 3:12ways to walk to the chair number one. See all ready to go?
- 3:15Yeah, the barber was in and shaved his head and legs about an hour
- 3:17ago. How are you taking it? Oh, there ain't been a peep
- 3:21out of them. Don't want nothing to eat, don't want a chaplain?
- 3:23Nothing at all. One of the request he's made is to see you.
- 3:29Funny time to ask to see a detective. Eh, if you don't mind
- 3:31my asking, mister Carter, what made a bike a shot like you decide
- 3:35to see him? Well, maybe I'm curious, you know, it's in
- 3:37his mind, go aft about a fellow's going to dine in a few hours.
- 3:40I don't believe that you've got any sympathy for a criminal, not you,
- 3:45not when a man's a killer. Yeh, here we are. Here's
- 3:52your company, Weldron. Oh, Hi, hello, Weldron, Oh cotton.
- 4:00You got five minutes? All right? God? Well, Johnny,
- 4:10Oh, so you did come? Gosh, I was afraid you wouldn't.
- 4:14Well, well, I saidmit. I was surprised when the warden called me
- 4:15and said you wanted to see me. Yeah, I imagine you were.
- 4:19Gee. It was sure and nice of you to come. I skipped the
- 4:23fromalities, Johnny, time's too short for chit chat. Come to the point
- 4:26that's on your mind, mister Carter. Do you think I'm guilty? Don't
- 4:30you? Well, didn't follow your case too closely, but you had a
- 4:33fair trial. You were found guilty. Or did you have me believe.
- 4:38I'd like to have you believe that that I'm innocent pretty late in the game
- 4:43to convince Johnny. Oh, I'm not looking for a last minute reprieve.
- 4:46That isn't what I asked you to come out here for. I got worried
- 4:49a little while ago that the governor refused my last request for a reprieve.
- 4:54I just made up my mind that I'd only be kidding myself if I hoped
- 4:58any longer. Why did you want to see me, Johnny, Mister Carter,
- 5:01I know I haven't got a chance. I'm I'm going to be gone
- 5:05and in just a few hours now. But I could go a lot easier
- 5:10if I thought that that maybe someday the war would know the truth, they'd
- 5:15know that that Johnny Walden was innocent. Johnny, if I thought you were
- 5:18innocent, I'd start the wheels turning right now to get your reprie. Oh
- 5:21wait, let me finish, mister Carter. I know you don't believe me.
- 5:27Nobody does. I guess I couldn't expect you to believe me after the
- 5:30way things went at the trial. But sitting here in death row waiting,
- 5:36the idea came to me that that maybe Nick Carter would show him someday,
- 5:43of course i'd be gone. But well, you see there there's Laura,
- 5:47my wife. She's going to keep on living and it'll be hard for her.
- 5:53I suppose she believes you're innocent. Oh, she's stuck by me.
- 5:57Swell. She's a wonderful woman and I don't want the word to look on
- 6:00her as the widow of a murderer. Mister Catter. All I'm asking is
- 6:05that after I'm gone, in your spare time, when you try to prove
- 6:11that they executed the wrong man, just for my wife's sake, Johnny,
- 6:16if your innocence, who do you think did rab the Fielding safe and kill
- 6:20missus Fielding? I don't know, mister Carter. There's nobody you even suspect,
- 6:25well the only one that No, No, I'm not going to accuse
- 6:30somebody I'm not sure of. I've only got a few more hours to live
- 6:33in I don't want me to do anything for you, Johnny. You better
- 6:36tell me everything you can about this. No. No, you'll find up
- 6:41for yourself once you start looking. I've got to have some kind of evidence
- 6:45to go on it. I don't have any cards were stacked so well against
- 6:48me. But go see Laura. She's never stopped working for me. Maybe
- 6:54she knows more by now, look here, that's the case. Why haven't
- 6:57you had a lawyer working for you right up to the last minute? Lawyers?
- 7:00I never had that kind of dough. Oh. A couple of shyeses
- 7:03came around thinking maybe I had the feeling jewels tucked away someplace when they found
- 7:09out they weren't going to get a cut, and they faded pretty fast.
- 7:13Even if you decided to do anything for you, mister Carter, I wouldn't
- 7:15be able to pay if your trouble. You'd have to do it just just
- 7:20as a favor to a dying man. You don't know where the jewels are
- 7:24on No, mister Carter, how could I know? I didn't do that
- 7:29job. Look you go see Laura. She'll tell you whatever she can.
- 7:39All right, time's out, mister Carter. All right, God well,
- 7:43Johnny, I'll look into your case. I don't suppose you believe me.
- 7:48I bet he's been telling you an innocent man who's being the center of the
- 7:50chair. Huh. He tells that to everybody. It ever occurred to your
- 7:54guard that he might be telling the truth. Why so good luck? Oh
- 8:00thanks for coming, mister Kata, and thanks for whatever you can do for
- 8:03me. Sir, I'd very much like to know what happened to those fielding
- 8:07jewels. M oh oh oh oh, yes, well maybe they'll turn up
- 8:11while you're investigating. Thanks, so I wonder, say, God, how
- 8:18long is it until eight hours? Johnny? Just eight hours more? Hello
- 8:37Nick Carter's office, Oh, batcha, this is Nick. Oh Nick,
- 8:39kay, heaven you called? This place is a madhouse. The office is
- 8:43filled with reporters. The newspaper and broadcasting companies have been telephoning. The District
- 8:46attorney has been trying to reach you. What's the trouble. They want to
- 8:50know if you're going to try to get a reprieve for Johnny Waldron. The
- 8:52DA said he'd stick around his office all evening, and he's contacted the governor
- 8:56and he'll be on tap ready reprieve. Well great, Heaven, I just
- 9:00talk to the fellow. I don't have any evidence none whatsoever. It's the
- 9:01matter with the DA. When Nick Carter goes to work on a case,
- 9:05even at the zero hour, it's something usually pop. I'll tell him to
- 9:07hang out to the hats a while and you, Pat Sig go up to
- 9:09the courthouse and get a transcript in the Walden trial. They got what you
- 9:13can out of our files about Waldron. I'm heading back from State's prison right
- 9:16away. Meet you in front of the office, all right, Nick,
- 9:18So we're going to have to work fast. They throw the switch at exactly
- 9:20seven hours and forty minutes. Waldron was really hired as a chauffeur, was
- 9:35brought out of the trial, and he ingratiated himself with the old lady every
- 9:39chance he got. Oh, you know, missus Feeling was an invalid.
- 9:41Waldron used to carry her up and downstairs and waited on her and all that
- 9:45sort of thing. Who's inside the house A great deal? Then then I
- 9:50see now, Oh, the gun was traced to Missus Feeling's step son,
- 9:54Tom Fielding, but the prints and the gun were Waldron's. Her step son
- 9:56lived there with her. Yes, it's just the two of them. Walden
- 10:00and all the other servants slept out and reported for work in the mornings at
- 10:03eight. One is the body found On a Thursday night at ten o'clock the
- 10:05library of the house. Tom Feeling came home from his club and founder the
- 10:11safe was open and the jewels and money gone. Of course, any of
- 10:13the servants as well as Tom Feeling might have known the combination of the safe.
- 10:18Missus Feeling often opened it in front of all of them. The defense
- 10:20hopped on that at the trial. But Waldron's prints on the gun and his
- 10:24alibi being so flimsy, cooked his goose. I see see that, Walter,
- 10:31strike you, Nick guilty. It's the evidence that tells the tale.
- 10:33In any case, Betsy, we could find the party who has the missing
- 10:37Fielding jewels. It would look pretty grim for that, I said, it
- 10:39wouldn't look good, that's sure, Oh Nick, Look at the time,
- 10:43five fifty. In six hours and ten minutes, an innocent man may be
- 10:46electrocuted on oh, Betsy, no innocent man will be electrocuted for a crime
- 10:50he didn't do well. My name's Nick Carter. And here's the first stop,
- 10:54Betsy. His old tenement house. Laura Waldron lives here. You're very
- 11:11nice to come to see me, especially today, Missus Waldron. This is
- 11:15my assistant, Patsy Bourne. How do you do miss Bourne? Hello,
- 11:18missus Waldron. Won't you to sit down here? Let me dust the chair?
- 11:22No, no, no, down that's perfectly all right. Since Johnny's
- 11:26been away, I haven't been as good a housekeeper as I used to be.
- 11:30I'm no heart for it anymore, Missus Walden. I came to see
- 11:33you because I know you went to see my husband. I heard on the
- 11:37radio. Yes, that's right. But it's too late to get Johnny off,
- 11:41isn't it. Besides, we don't have any money to pay a famous
- 11:45detective, Missus Walden. The only thing Nick Carter ever asks is that justice
- 11:50be done. Oh, Missus Walden, tell me about Johnny, his habits,
- 11:54what he likes, he doesn't like. Johnny's good, Mister Carter.
- 12:00See, I know he's innocent. Proof No, just my heart tells me
- 12:07he wouldn't kill anybody. But more than that, I know because he was
- 12:13with me at the time the police says she was killed. Prosecution. Yes,
- 12:18a wife's testimony doesn't come for much in court. Oh yet, how
- 12:22thankful I am that he was with me that night. But I know he's
- 12:24innocent. You understand what I mean, don't you, miss Bourne? You
- 12:30understand when I say the world can stand against your man if you know he's
- 12:33right and couldn't tu you, Missus Waldron. Isn't there any way at all
- 12:41it can be proved that your husband was home with you that night. No,
- 12:46no, you don't think of providing alibis for staying in your own home.
- 12:50It isn't much, I know, but it's ours. Tom Fielding is
- 12:56out to help me. Now, Johnny is gonna be dumb Feeling. You
- 13:03mean, the step son of the woman your husband's convicted of murdering. Yes,
- 13:07in what way is he offered to help you money? He knows Johnny
- 13:11isn't the murderer. His testimony in court didn't follow that line, Missus Warden,
- 13:15of course not. Mister Feeling had himself to protect. That's right.
- 13:18Nick Feeling was under suspicion. Just this afternoon he called me again, And
- 13:24where's the jewels? I said to him, If my Johnny did it,
- 13:26where's the jewels and the money? Would I be begging for work if Johnny
- 13:31had done it. You're working now, Missus Varden, day work, scrubbing
- 13:35up places where they don't ask too many questions. But I've noted the streets
- 13:39of this town from one into the other every day. John don't, missus
- 13:48Waldron, don't cry. Please, you have to exclude me. Thank god,
- 14:01I'm counting the minutes and seconds now, only a few more out,
- 14:07Johnny will because Missus Waldron, I'd like to ask you another question. No
- 14:18right, maybe Nick can say your husband yet, you know, Oh,
- 14:22if you only could, there wasn't time left for me to chase down every
- 14:26witness and question them. Tell me, Missus Waldon, whom do you suspect
- 14:31of robbing and murdering your husband's late employer? Oh? Oh, mister Carter,
- 14:37I have no proof against anyone. I didn't ask if you knew who
- 14:39murdered Missus Feeling. I only said whom do you suspect? But I have
- 14:43no right to suspect him? Right? What do you mean he's been so
- 14:50kind and offer to help Tom Feeling, that's who you think did it?
- 14:54Oh? I never dared think it out loud before he was a step son,
- 14:58you know. But she will love money. I'm not saying it did
- 15:05it, only only what you talked to him, mister Carter. All right,
- 15:13Well, I'll go right over to the Fielding House now. Oh,
- 15:16but you won't find him at home at this hour. And Carter, he's
- 15:18always at the club at this time, I know. For when Johnny used
- 15:22to drive for him. That's the old Hunt Club, isn't it. Yes,
- 15:26come on, Patti that sorry. Time's precious, Okay, goodbye and
- 15:28thank you, probably right here waiting and praying you'll find the guilty man in
- 15:33time to save Johnny. Nick, there's something puzzling you. What is it?
- 15:50Didn't you think missus Walden's story made sense? Well, it did and
- 15:54it didn't. But Nick, doesn't it seem a bit odd for Tom Feeling
- 15:58to offer him money? Yes? If that's true, well then her story
- 16:03does make sense. Patsy, It's not what missus Walburn said. That's about
- 16:07it. Something else, something else? What is it? Nick? I
- 16:11wish I knew at the simple It's something that doesn't get into the picture in
- 16:18the back of my mind somewhere, but I can't quite get the key to
- 16:22it. And if you ask me, Tom Feeling is the one who would
- 16:23straighten out a lot of things. And he's the man who're going to tackle
- 16:26right now. Oh, this Hunt Club's pretty swaky, good evening, sir,
- 16:33Can I park your car for you? Thanks to play? Still has
- 16:36down it? And pa oh, I beg your pardon, miss ladies.
- 16:38All permitted in the old Houn Club. I'm sorry. Well, that that's
- 16:42your out passing. I guess it does any better? Wait for me here?
- 16:45I guess I'll have to. Oh, Nick, it's eight fifteen,
- 16:51only three hours and twenty five minutes to go until midnight. Ring again,
- 17:12Nick Feeling. Wasn't it a club? So we've got to be home here?
- 17:15Uh? Your womanly intuition isn't working right to night, Betsy. Not
- 17:22a light in the whole house. I don't think anybody's home, mister Feeling.
- 17:26If you only knew how much time we've wasted looking for you, Well,
- 17:29Patsy, maybe we can uncover enough evidence without seeing mister Fielding face to
- 17:32face? What are you going to do? Little high class lock picking and
- 17:36the interest of Johnny Waldron and his wife Laura. That way, I command,
- 17:41and stay behind me. She gets talking here, Shut the door and
- 17:45out, use my flash. Where are we headed? For? The library?
- 17:49That's the room missus Feeling was killed in, wasn't it. Let's see
- 17:55these old houses. The library is usually back this way off the center of
- 18:03Do you think there's anybody beside us in the house? I hope not.
- 18:07You're here, said door. That's must be it. Yeah, this is
- 18:15the library. What are we looking for? All right? Now? I'm
- 18:21looking for Missus Fielding safe? Safe safe. Oh it's behind that portrait of
- 18:27her that was in the testimony. You're right, thanks, Bettie. I'll
- 18:33turn on that small lamp. Will you take a glance at the papers to
- 18:36the desk while I opened the safe? Say, Missus Fielding held her son
- 18:41and air down while she was living. He sent me making up for it.
- 18:44Now look at that flye cabinet. It's filled to the hair with pre
- 18:48war stuff. Oh, and look at this black market stuff. Have a
- 18:52gold tip cigarette that is going Yes, thank you, I will. How
- 19:00do you feel I Tom Fielding walked in here right now and caught you swiping
- 19:03his expensive cigure? Is only one Nick? And for that matter, how
- 19:06would you feel if mister Fielding so you were about to open his safe?
- 19:14Okay, yes, I guess hell and they shot into that window there.
- 19:18The bullet went right on the side of the desk here. Well, we
- 19:19better get out of here, Nick one minute, Betsy, and see what's
- 19:22in this safe. It's almost open. Now who do you think shot it
- 19:26is? Mister Fielding? Oh, Patsy, will you pick that bullet out?
- 19:30Of the desk. It'll be a handy piece of evidence. All right.
- 19:33So you're taking this attempt to murder us awful likely, Nick, I
- 19:36don't think it was murder, Betsy, not murder. No, you were
- 19:40standing by the wine cabinet, not four feet in the window, and I
- 19:42was a perfect target standing here. No, Betsy, I think you'll find
- 19:47somebody was just trying to scare us away. Oh well, I got the
- 19:51bullet out. Let's start at thirty two anyway, Patsy, Yes, okay,
- 20:02the missing juice, oh, Nick, yes, right here in the
- 20:04scene. Oh, Nick, that's wonderful. Hey, Patsy, what are
- 20:10you doing? I'm getting the deil on the phone for you. You've got
- 20:11the evidence of Johnny Walden's refree, Nick, Missus Waldron was telling the true
- 20:17put down that phone. Yes, Nick, I'll get my police headquarters first.
- 20:22I want a general alarm sign up for Tom Feeling. But Johnny Waldron,
- 20:25I still have two hours, Patsy. If Waldron's innocent, I'll prove
- 20:27it time to save him from the chair. Nick, why should you want
- 20:42to talk to missus Waldron again when you haven't asked for the reprieve? Only
- 20:45make her feel worse, something about it that doesn't add up for Patsy,
- 20:49and I've got to know what it is before I go any further. This
- 20:53is her doors y, Cardie. You're thinking on This case is beyond me.
- 21:00Oh, Patsy, it's hard to explain what. I don't know myself
- 21:03what the missing link is. How can I explain it to you? But
- 21:06you found the jewels. Tom Feeling had them in his safe. Why it's
- 21:08obvious, Nick, he didn't get along with his step mother and he Nick,
- 21:14what are you doing? Want to open missus Walden's door? Oh no,
- 21:17don't do that, Nick. I'm sure she's here. She's probably been
- 21:19crying and doesn't want to see anybody. Let me call her first, Missus
- 21:23Walter. Missus Walter. Sorry, Betty. We haven't any time to waste.
- 21:36Now. Let's see where's the light switch here? Right the door.
- 21:41Oh, she isn't here, so it seems Nick. Look here, there's
- 21:47a gold tip cigarette in this ashtray, the same kind we saw at Fielding's
- 21:49house. Let's have it, no lipstick on it, kind of pinched in
- 21:56there at the end. He's been here. I never would have believed it
- 21:59of him. Believe was it a man like Feeling would come to a place
- 22:02like this. A man like that wouldn't get his hands dirty putting them on
- 22:04the doorno say that again? What a man like Ceiling wouldn't dirty his hands
- 22:11on the doorknob of a place like I got it, Patsy, who just
- 22:15gave me the key I've been looking for. Come on, we've got to
- 22:17get back to the feelings, Operarya. There'll be another murder, you know,
- 22:30Patsy. There are times when having a siren on this car comes in
- 22:33handy and the night's one of them. Op time do you think the police
- 22:37woul pick Feeling up here? Do you think he bet his home? He's
- 22:38at home. I've got my bottom dollar on that. Do you know what
- 22:42time it is? I'm worrying about the time. And come on, all
- 22:45right with you? Places still die. There's a little light shining in the
- 22:49hallway. He's here, all right. Why don't you step Betsy, don't
- 22:53worry about me. I slipped the latch in the front door when we left.
- 22:56See if it's been bolded? Still open? Where do you think he
- 23:00is? Very probably that missus waterman open the door yet? Shot? Oh
- 23:15Nick, hurry, I am hurrying he's killing there. Oh, missus Water
- 23:26I was thank you can't. He was just going to shoot me. I
- 23:30got the gun away from him, shut him. But he was self defense.
- 23:37Anyone can see that. I'm so sorry. Human. He was worth
- 23:40it, it was worthy. Now, Johnny'll be safe. You won't have
- 23:44to die in the chair. Nick, you've only got seven minutes to call
- 23:47it. Seven minutes to twelve, mister Cotton, just a minute. You
- 23:52have a cigarette? A cigarette, right, thanks? Wait a minute til
- 23:59I get my whole out of my bed. Oh you do use a cigarette
- 24:02holder? I thought so take the time is getting awfully shot for your call
- 24:04to the DA. I'm not gonna make that call. I not gonna make
- 24:07it. No, Missus Waldon, there's a nice frame up you when your
- 24:11husband tried against Tom Feeling but it didn't work. Frame up, yes,
- 24:14Frame up you, and Johnny stays this whole thing to get him a last
- 24:15minute repriet. It's pretty clever. But you made a couple of mistakes.
- 24:19For example, this gold tips cigarette but I found in your apartment tonight.
- 24:22What about when I found this button in your apartment to all pinched in at
- 24:26the end from having been smoked in the holder. I knew you would lie
- 24:27about not having seen Tom Feeling these particular cigarettes I made to order for him.
- 24:32I didn't leave it there. I couldn't be sure of that until I
- 24:33found that you used a cigarette holder, and then I knew I was right.
- 24:36You did leave it here. Go on, prove it another thing,
- 24:38Patsy. Take a look at Missus Waldon's hands. My hands, are they
- 24:42beautiful? Beautifully manicure exactly? This is Walden to hands like yours. You
- 24:47don't scrubs for a living. That dingy apartment of yours is merely a front
- 24:51gune. Yes, And I know how I use this gun too, And
- 24:52I'm going to so sorry. Hey, Missus Walden, Betsy, Yes,
- 25:00take a look at Tom Feeling. See if you're still alive? Right,
- 25:02Nick, you haven't got anything on me. You can't get me, good
- 25:06one phenemenance quick? Okay? But Nick, can you prove this charge against
- 25:11missus Wolton? Can you be positive she and her husband framed Feeling? Not
- 25:14yet, Patsy, But I'm so sure I'm right that I'll risk my reputation
- 25:17on it. But Nick, as long as there's the slightest doubt about it,
- 25:18shouldn't you call the DA and give Johnny Walden the benefit of the doubt?
- 25:22No, Patsy, As far as I'm concerned, there's no doubt whatsoever.
- 25:25I'm so sure I'll even risk Johnny's life on it. Hello, Nick
- 25:37Carter's office. Oh, yes, lieutenant, Yes, yes it was he
- 25:45is I see? Well? Thank you, Lieutenant. Yes, I'll tell
- 25:49Nick goodbye. Is that the report from the police head Corners Pency? Yes,
- 25:53it was Lieutenant Riley. And you were right, Nick. That gun
- 25:56you took from missus Walder was registered in Johnny's name, and she lied about
- 26:00taking the gun away from feeling and shooting him in self defense. Feeling finger
- 26:03prints weren't on the gun anywhere, but hers were all over it. Did
- 26:07They checked with the bullet when you picked out of that desk and one that
- 26:10was fired of us? Yes, and it came from the same gun.
- 26:11Fine. What about feeling rally saying he's going to live. What's more,
- 26:15he regained consciousness long enough to make a statement. Good. Oh, Nick.
- 26:19That missus Walden was certainly clever. She was planning the jewels and feeling
- 26:23safe when he came in the room and caught her. So she yelled him
- 26:26at the point of her gun and knocked him up, found his wrists and
- 26:30ankles, gagged him and hit him away in another room. How did you
- 26:33know that, very simple, Bessy, the marks we had been tied was
- 26:36still in his wrists when I examined him, And also there was a bump
- 26:38on his head. Nick, you're always holding out on me? And one
- 26:41other thing. What made you think Feeling's life would be in danger way back
- 26:45when we were in missus Walden's apartment the second time? Sure, h Well,
- 26:48Patsy, After you inspired remark about hands, I suddenly realized what it
- 26:52was about missus Walden that puzzled me was her hands. I knew that with
- 26:56hands like hers, he couldn't be earning her living scrubbing floors, I see.
- 27:00And if she were lying about that, it was very probable she was
- 27:02lying about everything, and the whole thing was a plot to make look guilty.
- 27:06Why should that make you suddenly afraid that something might be going to happen
- 27:07to feel us? If she and Johnny were so anxious to get Johnny a
- 27:11reprieve that they were willing to give up the jewels to make it look as
- 27:14if feeling were really the guilty man. It was entirely possible that she might
- 27:17go further and kill Fielding and try to make it look as if he killed
- 27:19himself. But how would that have Johnny Waldron, Well, it was done
- 27:22right. It would look as if he were remorseful at having let Johnny take
- 27:26the blame. She almost got away with it, but she didn't because Nick
- 27:30arrived in the nick of time. You're a wonderful detective, mister Carter,
- 27:40and soul ladies and gentlemen. At midnight last night, Johnny Waldron went to
- 27:44the electric chair to pay for the crime of having murdered Missus Cornelius Fielding his
- 27:48dramatic last minute attempt to get a reprieved field Thanks to the quick action of
- 27:52that master Detective Nick Carter. In those few short hours that Carter was actually
- 27:56on the case, he found the missing jewels, uncovered a well laid plot
- 28:00between Johnny and his wife to pin the murder on Tom Fielding and save Fielding's
- 28:04life. Tom Fielding in the entire community or a diet a gretitude to Nick
- 28:10Carter. This has been another of the strange adventures of Nick Carter, Master
- 28:30Detective which are brought to you regularly at this time by a w R mutual.
- 28:34Well, Nick, what happens in your next week's story? I want
- 28:37to tell you the story of the time that I quite accidentally stumbled onto a
- 28:41terrible crime. Would be more correct, I stumbled onto evidence that a terrible
- 28:45crime had been committed. That doesn't sound like a very unusual thing for you
- 28:48to do, except for one little fact, mister Ridley. We didn't know
- 28:51where or when the crime had been committed, in spite of the fact that
- 28:53we heard the story of the murder from the victim's own lips. As a
- 28:56matter of fact, we even heard the murder committed, and we want us
- 29:00to do anything about it. If you're trying to make me curious about it,
- 29:03we are you're certainly succeeding. Well, it's as unusual a tale as
- 29:06I've had the pleasure of telling in a long while, I assure you.
- 29:08So until next week, So long and so long to you, Nick and
- 29:12Patsy. In the Strange Adventure you have just heard. Nick Carter was impersonated
- 29:18by Lon Clark, Patsy by Helen Choate. The story was written for Nick
- 29:22Carter by Bart Conray. Original music was played by Lou White. The entire
- 29:26production was under the direction of Jack McGregor. Next week, at the same
- 29:47time, listen to another curious experience of Nick Carter entitled Records of Death for
- 29:53Nick Carter and the Mystery of the Unclaimed Box. This story is a copyrighted
- 30:03feature of Street and Smith Publications Incorporated. The Return of Nick Carter is produced
- 30:07in the studios of WR and This broadcast over most of these stations every Saturday
- 30:12evening at seven o'clock Eastern wartime. And don't forget that the adventures of Nick's
- 30:17adopted son, Chick Carter are broadcast over most of these stations Mondays through Fridays
- 30:22at five point thirty pm Eastern wartime. This is mutual welcome back. When
- 30:44I first heard this episode, I was really stunned by the way it ended,
- 30:49and then I thought, you know, this is actually pretty good.
- 30:53The whole premise is probably one of the most cliched in both detective and crime
- 31:02fighting fiction, including superheroes, where the guilty man his only hours to live
- 31:10and our detective has to find the evidence that we'll save his life, and
- 31:15it always ends with the life being saved, with perhaps just minutes to spare.
- 31:22Now, there may have been some variations on this in recent years,
- 31:27but this has been kind of a classic trope. You you know, there
- 31:32were tons of radio episodes about it TV shows from the nineteen thirties to the
- 31:38nineteen eighties. Here they actually do something really different, and I like that.
- 31:51I like that it, you know, just surprised us with a very
- 31:55good twist from what you'd expect, because I think you sit and you listen
- 32:01to it, you are expecting one thing, and they just totally turn it
- 32:06around. So I think they deserve some credit for some inventiveness and creative creativity.
- 32:12And next week's episode is also another one of my favorite Nick Carter's,
- 32:16so I hope you'll be back for that one. But now we're on the
- 32:21listener comments and feedback, and we have a comment here from Dale who says,
- 32:35Hey, Adam, I just purchased the app and I'm enjoying it enormously.
