- 0:00We go through our daily lives, busy ourselves with earning a
- 0:04living, supporting our families, maintaining our bodies,
- 0:08entertaining ourselves, arguing, fighting, gossiping and
- 0:13following up on hobbies or passions we are engaged in.
- 0:18We close ourselves into a narrow and limited existence and feel
- 0:22content that we are doing something important or useful,
- 0:27or at least whiling away our time between birth and death
- 0:32with no further meaning. We may feel helplessly caught up
- 0:36in a life we do not understand, or alternatively, we may feel
- 0:42powerful and proud in our accomplishments in our lifetime.
- 0:47Few are those who look beyond this round of existence to view
- 0:51the wider universe and the potential significance of our
- 0:54lives. In terms of that larger
- 0:56framework, astronomers explore the vastness of outer space with
- 1:02ever more powerful instruments. They report that we can observe
- 1:06up to about 93 billion light years distance, but we do not
- 1:11know the full size of the universe beyond what can be
- 1:14observed. They report there are somewhere
- 1:17between 200 billion and 2 trillion galaxies in the
- 1:21universe, a wide range due to the difficulty of seeing
- 1:26galaxies that are faintly visible to their instruments.
- 1:30The Galaxy in which our planet resides, we call the Milky Way
- 1:33Galaxy. It is not particularly prominent
- 1:37in size or number of stars compared to other galaxies,
- 1:41astronomers have observed. Astronomers estimated that there
- 1:46are between 100 billion stars and 400 billion stars in our
- 1:51Galaxy alone, of which our Sun is not a particularly prominent
- 1:57star and it is stuck on a peripheral arm of the Milky Way
- 2:01Galaxy. Nowadays, scientists are
- 2:05speaking about other universes as they uncover more facts about
- 2:10the nature of existence. If we reflect even briefly on
- 2:15the magnitude of all of this creation and the orderly nature
- 2:19of how it functions, it becomes inconceivable to think that it
- 2:24is all about our daily struggle for existence, our enjoyments,
- 2:29our arguments, and our little life On our little planet.
- 2:32Whirling around a little sun in a little solar system, in a
- 2:37little Galaxy, in an enormous universe filled with hundreds of
- 2:43billions of galaxies and trillions of stars, ostensibly
- 2:47having, in many cases, their own solar systems and planets, can
- 2:53we truly say we understand the meaning of our existence?
- 2:59It is like a single skin cell on one foot trying to comprehend
- 3:04the complexity and size of the human body and make
- 3:08pronouncements about the meaning of it all.
- 3:12Could that skin cell understand that it is part of a unified
- 3:15being of a magnitude beyond its greatest sense?
- 3:21The mind cannot encompass or comprehend either the enormity
- 3:25or the complexity of the universal manifestation.
- 3:29When confronted with this, the only reasonable approach is to
- 3:33quiet the mind and widen the consciousness to receive the
- 3:37force embodied in all that exists and identify with that
- 3:42force in the Rig Veda Mandala Tan Sukta 129 The hymn of
- 3:48Creation quote. Who knows, in truth?
- 3:54Who would tell us here below? From where was it born?
- 3:59Whence this surging creation the gods stand below this surging
- 4:05out abroad? Who knows then from whence this
- 4:09took birth, that from where this creation has sprung, does that
- 4:14even contain it or does it not? He who is the overlord in the
- 4:19Supreme Infinity, does he even know where he too knows not?
- 4:27End Quote. Ricks 6 and seven, translated by
- 4:31Nolini Cantagupta. The entire creation is one
- 4:36Supreme Being, Creator, created, container and contained.
- 4:43We are one with the myriad of stars, galaxies and the universe
- 4:48itself. All that we see around us, as
- 4:52the Upanishads also point out, are one with us.
- 4:57Thou art that, Sriorvindo writes.
- 5:01Quote the guru to the student. Lift your eyes towards the sun.
- 5:09He is there in that wonderful heart of life and light and
- 5:12splendour. Watch at night the innumerable
- 5:15constellations glittering like so many solemn.
- 5:18Watch fires of the Eternal in the limitless silence which is
- 5:23no void, but throbs with the presence of a single calm and
- 5:28tremendous existence. See there, Orion, with his sword
- 5:33and belt shining as he shown to the Aryan Fathers 10,000 years
- 5:37ago at the beginning of the Aryan era, serious in his
- 5:42splendor, Lyra, sailing billions of miles away in the ocean of
- 5:47space. Remember that these innumerable
- 5:51worlds, most of them mightier than our own, are whirling with
- 5:55indescribable speed at the back of that ancient of Days whither
- 6:00none but He knoweth, and yet that they are a million times
- 6:07more ancient than your Himalaya, more steady than the roots of
- 6:11your hills, and shall so remain until He at his will shakes them
- 6:16off like withered leaves from the eternal tree of the
- 6:19universe. Imagine the endlessness of time,
- 6:25realize the boundlessness of space, and then remember that
- 6:30when these were worlds were not, he was the same as now, and when
- 6:37these are not, He shall be still the same.
- 6:42Perceive that beyond Lyra he is, and far away in space, where the
- 6:47stars of the Southern Cross cannot be seen, still he is
- 6:53there. And then come back to the earth
- 6:57and realize who this he is. He is quite near to you.
- 7:03See Yonder old man who passes near you, crouching and bent
- 7:07with his stick. Do you realize that it is God
- 7:12who is passing there? A child runs laughing in the
- 7:16sunlight. Can you hear Him in that
- 7:19laughter? Nay, he is nearer still to you.
- 7:25He is in you, He is you. It is yourself that burns
- 7:30Yonder, millions of miles away in the infinite reaches of
- 7:33space, that walks with confident steps on the tumbling billows of
- 7:38the ethereal sea. It is you who have set the stars
- 7:42in their places and woven the necklace of the Suns, not with
- 7:46hands, but by that Yoga, that silent, actionless, impersonal
- 7:52will which has set you here today, listening to yourself in
- 7:57me. Look up, O child of the ancient
- 8:00Yoga, and be no longer a trembler and a doubter.
- 8:05Fear not, doubt not, grieve not, for in your apparent body is one
- 8:12who can create and destroy worlds with a breath.
