- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Tristan, what a beautiful, lovely Saturday that we witnessed a few days ago.
- 0:57SPEAKER_06: Forget a bye week, dude.
- 0:59SPEAKER_06: You know what's better than not worrying about your team?
- 1:02SPEAKER_06: Not worrying about your team when they're actually playing because you're just doing the belt to rear end.
- 1:08SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:08SPEAKER_06: Immediately.
- 1:09SPEAKER_06: Beautiful.
- 1:10SPEAKER_06: Immediately.
- 1:11SPEAKER_06: Steven?
- 1:14SPEAKER_06: I think first we gotta do the thing.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: You're right.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: And now I was hesitant.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: I was hesitant last or the last win against Colorado.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: Because it we didn't feel good after that one.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: I feel really good after this one, and I'm really happy to be playing the song this week.
- 1:32SPEAKER_06: Play that song.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: We're playing that song.
- 1:54SPEAKER_06: Alright, let me let me let me cut you off before you say a word.
- 1:58SPEAKER_06: So you just opened this podcast up by ripping on the Colorado game.
- 2:04SPEAKER_06: I feel so much better about that Colorado game, first of all, because hey, you covered.
- 2:09SPEAKER_06: I know we're like, I'm sure the audience is like, wow, talk about Colorado.
- 2:12SPEAKER_06: Two weeks are very cool, guys.
- 2:15SPEAKER_06: But dude, hey, you covered and you did destroy Colorado when it mattered.
- 2:20SPEAKER_06: And seeing Utah struggle against Colorado, I think maybe Colorado, sure, they lose every game that they step foot on.
- 2:27SPEAKER_06: And sure, maybe that's what matters ultimately in the end.
- 2:31SPEAKER_06: But they are testing wills of visiting teams.
- 2:36SPEAKER_06: So I'm glad that we wouldn't got that done.
- 2:38SPEAKER_06: But Steven, let's talk about the other team in the mountain time zone that we just annihilated.
- 2:42SPEAKER_06: Though Arizona likes to mess with their time zones, and that is the Arizona State Sun Devils.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: It's actually Arizona's the only one who doesn't mess with their time zones.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: Everybody else around them does not American.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: That's on American.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: You know, call it what you want.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: This isn't a time zone conversation.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: The Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils in God's time, Central Time.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: 53 in God's Land.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: In God's Land, Lubbock, Texas.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: Um we had 40 points in the first half.
- 3:13SPEAKER_06: I think it was 43, Steven.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: Was it 43?
- 3:17SPEAKER_06: I think it was 43.
- 3:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it was 43 points.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: 43 points in the first half.
- 3:25SPEAKER_06: The first the first the first 30 minutes, yes.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: What have we not had this year?
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: We haven't had starting.
- 3:30SPEAKER_06: We haven't had a blowout either.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: We haven't had a blowout either.
- 3:35SPEAKER_06: Well, I mean, it's it depends on how you define blowout, but we didn't we uh let's put it this way.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: I phrased it a few weeks back talking about the podcast.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: I had fun watching the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: Like a lot of fun watching this team on Saturday absolutely dominate the Sun Devils and Kenny Dillingham in a performance that I would describe as I don't want to say perfect, but it's almost there.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Nearly perfect.
- 4:09SPEAKER_06: Outside of the opening drive, do you really have any complaints?
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, the second half he didn't score as much, but hey, you were already up 43 points, you're playing a lot of backups.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, there was obviously one touchdown that you won back that, you know, Will just kind of underthrew a little bit.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: But no, I mean there's nothing that we're there's nothing that I'm going to complain about after this game because they played exactly how we were expecting Texas Tech to play this year.
- 4:36SPEAKER_06: Steven, I'm not gonna give any beef towards our team regarding the second half.
- 4:40SPEAKER_06: The game was over.
- 4:41SPEAKER_06: Sure.
- 4:42SPEAKER_06: There was no foot on that accelerator at that point in time, and I think that you just kind of uh let the clock run out at that point because at that point it was over, and you took the entire gas out of the ball.
- 4:57SPEAKER_06: I sure like you you maybe talk about criticizing the offense in the second half there, but ultimately wasn't going there.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Wasn't gonna go there.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: I wasn't gonna go there because I'm not uh what I was saying is I'm not complaining.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: This was a terrific game.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: The Red Raiders were talking about a lot of positives today because they deserve it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: We're happy, very happy.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, complete and utter domination.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: You start off hot.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: He is, he's very handsome.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: In fact, there's plenty of handsome men on this football team.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: We start off hot in parentheses after the fumble.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you fumbled on the first drive.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: It is what it is, but hey, it's about you how you respond.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: And Ben Roberts goes and joins the pick six gang um to start us off, and then they get a big fourth down stop to put us right back in scoring position.
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: 14-0 Red Raiders right off the bat.
- 5:47SPEAKER_06: So was that like the biggest redemption story of all time?
- 5:51SPEAKER_06: Of all time.
- 5:52SPEAKER_06: Like, I don't I don't care what what you're even talking about.
- 5:55SPEAKER_06: I don't care if you're talking about like episode six, Darth Vader, or Malfoy and Harry Potter.
- 6:00SPEAKER_06: I'm talking like the biggest redemption story.
- 6:02SPEAKER_06: That sounded like the most millennial consumer shit.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Look at you, dude.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Busting out an HP reference.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Yikes.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: I know your last name is McGonagall, but I didn't I didn't think you would bust that one out, dude.
- 6:15SPEAKER_06: I think we just lost a quarter of the audience that we don't even have anymore.
- 6:19SPEAKER_06: Um, so Jacoby Williams.
- 6:24SPEAKER_06: He fumbles it on the goal line, and then he just goes He goes crazy.
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: He goes crazy.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: 15 yards of carry, 165 on the ground, two T two TDs.
- 6:36SPEAKER_02: Um hey You know, not to reiterate the same thing I've been saying for about three years now.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Jacoby Williams, you need to get that guy the football.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Jacoby Williams.
- 6:49SPEAKER_06: The man that's bounce off of people like he was a ping pong ball.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: Get that man the football in whatever way you can.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's electric.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: And you were gonna miss Cam Dickey.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: You know, Q, I thought did okay, but you know, he's still you know, he's still trying to get his feet under him.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Um but Jacoby is exactly what you want in your RB1, and he needs to remain getting the same amount of carries that he had in this game.
- 7:20SPEAKER_06: So even the skill gap between Jacoby Williams and Quinn Joyner, it's um it's vast.
- 7:27SPEAKER_06: It's it's vast, okay.
- 7:29SPEAKER_06: Um and you just hope that the NIL bags reflect that ultimately, hopefully.
- 7:36SPEAKER_06: Um I mean that's unfortunately kind of how I have to look at things now, right?
- 7:39SPEAKER_06: Is the employer evaluation with my own.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I think when it comes to this, they uh Joey does a great job of just keeping things the main thing, the main thing, you know.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: We're not worried about uh carries and and NIL and everything.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: You know, he's he he likes to say uh that he keeps himself completely out of that talk and lets James Blanchard kind of handle it, which I think is a great great method, great ideology when it comes to the new age of college sports.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: But no, I mean uh Jacoby Williams and the offensive line, because you need to include both of them in this conversation.
- 8:10SPEAKER_02: The offensive line absolutely shined.
- 8:12SPEAKER_02: It was a uh shone, shined, shined.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: Um shined, shined.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: It it was it started off hot and heavy with a Will Hammond fourth down and oh, a little Will a little Willie Hammond fourth down run where Jordan Church basically just picked him up and said, Nope, you're gonna get this.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Yep, you're gonna get this.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because it was not gonna be good.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: And then Jordan Church was like, Yep, uh, we're gonna we're gonna make this happen right here, right now.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: And for a guy who has not had the best start to the season, for him to bust that out right at the beginning of the game, I think set a tone for this offensive line and really let them, you know, play like men in this one.
- 8:51SPEAKER_06: Is that the moment for the all-line O-line of the year, or was it whenever uh Cleveland was saying run the damn ball?
- 8:57SPEAKER_06: Which one's a bigger moment?
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: Well, I don't know.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think Houston's a bigger win, obviously.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: But yes, it's it's I I think the overall performance though in the Arizona State game, and and yeah, they're not on the same level as Houston's defense, but you know, to accomplish what they did, I mean Jacoby had forever to run.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Will had a lot of time to throw.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: Um, it was just an overall great performance by the offensive line, and I I hope we ride this momentum as we as the season goes.
- 9:27SPEAKER_06: I'm hoping hoping that was kind of like a a light of the fire to get this O line going.
- 9:33SPEAKER_06: You know, hopefully that you know you're halfway through the year.
- 9:36SPEAKER_06: Like if things are gonna start clicking now is the time.
- 9:38SPEAKER_06: Like you're already you're 50% through your season, so it's now or never.
- 9:41SPEAKER_06: It's so so I'm really happy to see them really start turning it on.
- 9:45SPEAKER_06: Um, but hey, we're since we're still on the topic with running backs, um I know I don't want to be like a W downer here with with Quent Quentin Joyner.
- 9:51SPEAKER_06: And I'm you know, he has his moments and stuff, but I mean he was kind of blowing it in short yards uh moments during the game, whenever all we needed was a yard or even inches sometimes, and he just he couldn't get across the line.
- 10:04SPEAKER_06: Um and then in the second half, was it because you're just trying new things, seeing what what works and what doesn't on a given up Arizona State team?
- 10:14SPEAKER_06: Whenever you put TC in for a I don't what do you want to call it?
- 10:20SPEAKER_06: Do you want to call it a fullback position at that point?
- 10:22SPEAKER_06: A big boy, Wildcats, just uh handing it off to him to shove it into the uh the goal.
- 10:28SPEAKER_06: Um design of what we're looking for for just a big boy run it in, get it over, go.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: I I think that's truly the best option that they have for short yardage stuff outside of Cam Dickey, because you know, Q I it hasn't been good, hasn't been fun to watch in in short yardage situations, but you know, TC's a dog and he's six foot three and he's yoked and he's a he's a big presence, he's able to slam into a linebacker for the final score of the game.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, and he's a good option, and you need to use him.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: I I thought the tight ends, you know, obviously Moose had a great catch at the beginning of the game, and TC had some throughout the game, but in the blocking game, Jack Carpenter was fantastic, TC was fantastic, and Moose was fantastic.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: They really helped the offensive line push and create those holes for the big Jacoby plays, or you know, giving more uh time for Hammond to find Kenny Johnson or Micah or Coy or whoever.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I mean it it is still, you know, the short yardage stuff is tough.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's something that you can take out of this game and say, hey, that wasn't so good, but you know, he scored 53 points, and uh, and I think it's being a little nitpicky, honestly, to kind of you know question Quinn Joyner at this point.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: But uh, he did have a great catch out of the backfield on the wheel route.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: I thought that was uh you know, good to see him get involved in the in the pass catching game because I think we did that um pretty well with Cam Dickey.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: He kind of came along as the season went on last year as well in the pass game.
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, I mean I think it was just overall a really, really solid game for your offense.
- 12:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:09SPEAKER_06: So let's let's talk about the speaking of rushing.
- 12:12SPEAKER_06: Let's talk about your head man, Will Hammond, dude.
- 12:14SPEAKER_06: How about that?
- 12:15SPEAKER_06: Getting that rushing touchdown.
- 12:16SPEAKER_06: Uh do you think that uh little spin move was just him playing college football 26 at pressing circle?
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: I I mean if you talk about smooth, that was smooth.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was it was a smooth spin move into the Jordan layup Sally.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: It was um Sally.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: That was that was Primo.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: I was happy to see that because that all the lingos, please.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: Say more.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say more.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Give me give me time.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: We got a lot of time left in this podcast.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: Um, no, Will Hammond showed some spunk, man.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: Right off the bat.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: There was no hesitance.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: He was on time, he was he knew when to take off, and he knew when to call his own number.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: He knew when to give the ball um, you know, on a quick dink and dump.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: He found Kenny Johnson multiple times right on the money.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: The Koyakin touchdown was immaculate in the back of the end zone.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Um, you saw, I think that was probably Will Hammond's best overall performance as a red raider.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 13:12SPEAKER_06: Like completely, like completely like yeah, even better than the Utah game.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Utah he was great for a quarter.
- 13:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's true.
- 13:18SPEAKER_06: It wasn't the whole time.
- 13:19SPEAKER_06: He's great for a quarter.
- 13:19SPEAKER_06: They still went out there and won it.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: And it was incredible.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: It was an awesome, you know, an awesome 12-minute stretch for Will Hammond, but this was all game consistent, good, solid football from your leader.
- 13:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 13:31SPEAKER_06: It's definitely been his best game of the season.
- 13:33SPEAKER_06: Granted, he could probably chalk that up to a weaker competition.
- 13:35SPEAKER_06: I understand that.
- 13:36SPEAKER_06: You know, the the the stakes aren't quite as high where you're just gonna out talent the guys on the other side in pretty much every single way.
- 13:43SPEAKER_06: I get that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_06: Um, but you really saw him starting to trust his receivers, a lot of one-on-one balls that his guys went up there and won a lot.
- 13:50SPEAKER_06: Like you were just talking about like the Koy Akin catch, like he just slipped it in there.
- 13:54SPEAKER_06: So it wasn't exactly he wasn't exactly wide open.
- 13:57SPEAKER_06: He dropped a dri a dime right into Koy's basket, and he was just like I said, he's just popping them up, letting his guys go up and get it.
- 14:03SPEAKER_06: And if they don't get it, it is what it is, man.
- 14:05SPEAKER_06: He took a shot.
- 14:05SPEAKER_06: I'm we're glad he did.
- 14:07SPEAKER_06: So I'm glad he's just like like I'm sure Joey is, of course, he's been talking about it, how he wants the more shots downfield, and that's what it's gonna take.
- 14:13SPEAKER_06: And I think you know, this is a great confidence builder, and you're about to go up against a very leaky Cincinnati defense, and you want to see some more of that just slinging it, gun, you know, gunslinger out there, doing what's gotta be done to just move the ball down the field, which will be a lot easier against the Cincinnati team.
- 14:29SPEAKER_06: I think you're gonna see a defense that's a lot like Arizona State's ultimately um in terms of pushback on your boys.
- 14:36SPEAKER_06: Um, but you gotta score.
- 14:38SPEAKER_06: Like Cincinnati can clearly score.
- 14:40SPEAKER_06: Obviously, they had not faced a defense like ours yet, but you know, you just gotta be ready to put some points on the board, man.
- 14:45SPEAKER_06: Defense can't do everything.
- 14:46SPEAKER_06: So I'm glad to see him out there and really leading the team.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: I'll I'll get into some more Cincinnati thoughts as we get into that preview uh a little later on in the episode.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: But wanted to shout out Matt Clefwich.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Uh five games through the season, a lot of criticism going his way, a lot from this podcast, a lot from social media, a lot from everywhere, basically, um, with the uh Rocky performance for the offense through five weeks.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Um, they go into the bye week and they responded and it was heard loud and clear uh about you know what they can do better, what they can minimize a little bit in the uh in the offensive scene, uh not getting so cute on and also just executing at a really high level.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: So shout out Macleff, which if we're gonna you know crap on you when you don't do so well, you need to be brought up a little bit when you when you have a great game.
- 15:35SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 15:36SPEAKER_06: All he needs is two weeks.
- 15:37SPEAKER_06: That's all.
- 15:38SPEAKER_06: That's all he needs every time.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Just get two weeks each and every time.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: No, but I think I think they really did cease.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, they talked to him during the bye week and they were like, what did you focus on?
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: He's like, you know, we really just sat down and um talked as a coaching staff and kind of brought ourselves back down to earth a little bit and just realized, hey, this is who we are, you know, we got to use our guys, we gotta get Will going early.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: And I'm so thankful they did not use number four uh as much until the fourth quarter.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: I just think that's this is what I've been calling for all year.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: And I know it was it was kind of late in the week when they found out he was actually eligible, so I assume he wasn't involved in a lot of the game plan early on in the week.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: But like for them, this is what Texas Tech needs to do.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Don't go this two quarterback system.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: Stick with your boy Will Hammond, let him cook, and let Tommy be the true backup.
- 16:29SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, and you need to get you need to let Will get those reps.
- 16:32SPEAKER_06: This is his first year as your QB1.
- 16:34SPEAKER_06: I know we kind of sound like a broken record at this point, but there's this truly no substitute for experience.
- 16:39SPEAKER_06: And you're starting to see it out there, you're starting to see the kid loosen up.
- 16:41SPEAKER_06: Will's just having fun out there, man.
- 16:43SPEAKER_06: And he started the game like confidence.
- 16:46SPEAKER_06: We were really seeing that before.
- 16:47SPEAKER_06: We saw some feel like we were seeing some hesitation from it before.
- 16:49SPEAKER_06: Like we sell uh being too cautious, being too careful, and just not taking the shots that he needs to take.
- 16:55SPEAKER_06: And I'm glad to see him just getting out there and having fun, dude.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: We talk about Will Hammond and this Texas Tech team.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: I think we've been trying to like evaluate them as an entire, as a team.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: You know, what can we accomplish?
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: I know we're undefeated, but we, you know, how good is Houston?
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: How good is Oregon State?
- 17:14SPEAKER_02: They're turning out to be pretty darn good, you know.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: And we're looking back at those wins and we're trying to evaluate, you know, who Texas Tech is.
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: And if we get Will Hammond playing this way, this brings you to elite status, in my opinion, on what we can actually accomplish throughout this year, not just Big 12 championship, but beyond, because if you get a comfortable quarterback and Will Hammond doing what he's doing against Arizona State, you have a pretty darn good team.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: And you have a pretty darn good chance, especially with how the defense is playing, and we'll get to them in a second.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: But if Will Hammond can continue on this trajectory, uh sky's the limit.
- 17:55SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, dude.
- 17:56SPEAKER_06: And he still has what, three more years with us, too?
- 17:58SPEAKER_06: So we're still just in probably two.
- 18:01SPEAKER_06: Probably two.
- 18:02SPEAKER_06: He's a Richard sophomore.
- 18:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so two.
- 18:05SPEAKER_06: So two more.
- 18:06SPEAKER_06: Okay, that makes sense.
- 18:07SPEAKER_06: Um so yeah, yeah, you get two more, you get to enjoy two more years with him.
- 18:10SPEAKER_06: So this is hopefully just the beginning of him just progressively getting better as a quarterback.
- 18:14SPEAKER_06: Um, but obviously we're still in the middle of this year.
- 18:16SPEAKER_06: Um, but I'm absolutely with you, dude.
- 18:18SPEAKER_06: If if he can sit here and turn into the guy that we all expected him to be, especially when we saw flashes in the past whenever he was coming for for Barron, that this kid can really be your workhorse quarterback.
- 18:28SPEAKER_06: So he can he can now the goal, now that a Big 12 championship has been won, now the goal is to be that first tech quarterback to win a playoff game.
- 18:37SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 18:38SPEAKER_06: And I hope that he can be that kid because I absolutely think he has the tangibles to do so.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no doubt.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: He's definitely finding his receivers as well.
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: He's 11 Kenny Johnson.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Him and lord.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Him and Kenny have been finding a good rhythm.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: He had eight targets, he caught seven of them for 120 yards um on the day.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: He's definitely your big play type of uh wide receiver.
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: Shout out to the wide receivers, uh, Micah Hudson, Malcolm Simmons.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: There was a lot of like great hustle blocking downfield that I think went under the radar that I uh Joey called out and a few other outlets have called out.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: But um, I think that's the underrated stuff about the wide receiver room that you need.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: And if you're not necessarily, you know, contributing on the stat sheet as much, you know, that stuff you can help with.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Um, and I thought the wide receiver core as a whole looked really, really good and was uh spreading the love in a in a very nice way.
- 19:31SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 19:31SPEAKER_06: I think it's one of the first games you see that wide receiver group actually be an it factor.
- 19:36SPEAKER_06: They've been kind of complaining about them for a while, and you could really rely on this on them this game.
- 19:41SPEAKER_06: Um, you could really rely on all the offensive weapons, like the running backs obviously did their job too.
- 19:44SPEAKER_06: So it was just an all-out, blowout offensive performance.
- 19:48SPEAKER_06: And it really took the defense to really open that book up and get going.
- 19:52SPEAKER_06: Because whatever the defense is playing as well as they are, you let the defense get comfortable and they can just use that defensive performance as a launch pad.
- 20:00SPEAKER_06: And they just lift off because they feel the weight, the weight of holding the leads off your shoulders because the defense is doing their thing, and you just go out there and have fun.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was uh it was awesome to watch.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Do you want to do you have any other points that you want to talk about on the offensive side of the football?
- 20:16SPEAKER_06: No, I mean, other than Stone Harrington still being that dude, I know that's not taking the office.
- 20:20SPEAKER_06: He puts points on the board.
- 20:21SPEAKER_06: Dude, that guy rocks.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Special teams had a great day, but they did.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: This is this is still a defensive brand of football.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: That's what Joey Maguire has established here.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: That's what Shield Wood has established.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: And what I've noticed from this game, from the Colorado game, they're continuing to polish what is a great scheme, right?
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Shield Wood has a great scheme put in place.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: It's just with the turnover, with a lot of new faces, uh, you know, playing a lot of new like high-level snaps this season, guys coming from different programs, it's gonna take the team a while.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, and you need some live reps, you need some games on your belt to really kind of look at the film and understand what needs to be because it's all about timing, man.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: It's all about timing, it's all about instincts, it's all about you know playing your butt off and with energy.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: And this defense has increased every single one of those categories every single week, and they're getting turnovers, they are in the right spot at the right time, and I I think I notice it most with Austin Romain.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Ben Roberts and John Curry, they've been in the program for a little bit.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: They're they kind of understand the offense.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: AJ Holmes is AJ Holmes, like we understand, but to see Austin Romain really pick it up and be in the right spot because he was missing some key plays early on in the season, and we were noticing it.
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: But he made some awesome plays this game and kind of showed how this linebacking core can be so good as a unit together when you're all on the same page.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: And it was uh it was awesome.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: You also defensive line, six sacks, season high.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: Um, so pass rushes really finally get into the quarterback.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: quarterback and making them sweat.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: Um I just think the defense has has figured it out a little bit.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: The the the gears are turning right now.
- 22:07SPEAKER_06: The word is definitely adjustments and Shield Wood has managed to make them throughout the season and he kept saying that you know these guys are hungry to get better and he had he had no doubt that they would as the game switch on and you actually believe him.
- 22:19SPEAKER_06: I mean as a Techstech fan you're hesitant to do so with the defensive performances we've seen in our recent past.
- 22:26SPEAKER_06: That you just you wonder like are we going to fall back to earth?
- 22:29SPEAKER_06: Not that the defense was ever bad but like are they just going to be okay this year you know versus awesome because you know remember at the beginning of the year we were questioning the linebacking core first of all which is weird for a tech fan and even with bad defenses um but we were also wondering like what's going on with the D-line they sure you know they're they're not doing terrible but they're not exactly getting to the quarterback.
- 22:49SPEAKER_06: So now you're starting to really see them bust through the offensive line get to the quarterback get the quarterback off schedule just and just terrorize them in the backfield with picking off all these balls.
- 23:01SPEAKER_06: So it seems like a sure bet that we're going to get a pick six every game now and that's not a bad place to be as a defense and that a lot of that is coming from the linebacking core so they've really stepped up dude it's been really awesome to see especially whenever you're you're seeing a guy like Ben Roberts who's talking about how he's going to step up as a leader and just really take over this defense from uh from Rodriguez.
- 23:23SPEAKER_06: And now he's finally doing it dude at the beginning you were kind of questioning like I mean who the heck is Rodriguez.
- 23:28SPEAKER_06: Not saying he is but shoot dude I mean I think he's doing a pretty dang good job of filling those shoes.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah and I mean it started his momentum goes back to the BYU game in the Big 12 championship with how great of a performance that he had there.
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: He was solid all season but you obviously had J Rod who was doing J Rod things last year and and Ben kind of coming into that he filling that role along with Austin Romain stepping in and and contributing in a Ben Roberts 2025 sort of form.
- 23:54SPEAKER_02: John Curry's also been excellent.
- 23:57SPEAKER_06: Absolutely um can I can I can I just can I just I know this is a 2026 podcast and I know we we kind of pause and talk about J-Rod a lot but you know I wear my tech stuff all the time at work.
- 24:10SPEAKER_06: You know anytime it's a day where you wear your college gear and all that of course I'm supporting the double T.
- 24:14SPEAKER_06: You know what whom we hear the most about with my colors on J-Rod.
- 24:20SPEAKER_06: He's not every homes yeah no there everyone's like stopping me like Jacob Rodriguez dude that guy's like the best defensive player in the NFL and it's just like and it's it's it's awesome to see man.
- 24:30SPEAKER_06: Like it's really great to see a guy like obviously Patrick Mahomes is Patrick Mahomes but it's good to see I'm gonna hate to say this out loud good to see some young blood even though Put Mahomes is the same age as you and I um get out there and like continue to carry the torch in a big way.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Romello Hyde had an incredible game on Monday night football uh completely destroyed the uh who do they play uh the commanders on uh in the fourth fourth quarter he was incredible david bailey had three sacks the other day he was uh I think um AFC defensive player of the week um or at least the rookie of the week whatever it is so many guys that are just doing their job and and you're realizing the talent Joey talked a lot about talent lately um you he's referenced the Saban documentary we were kind of talking about Nick Saban earlier uh pre-pod of just like you know if you get talent on your roster you're gonna do okay you're gonna be looked at as a as a pretty darn good coach and Joey realizes that he brought it up on his podcast this week of just like hey I'm not afraid to admit it you get good players you're gonna be good like it's you have a better chance of being good so recognizing the talent um and we have talent on this team like they're coaching up like Shieldwood does a great job with his scheme and everything but it starts with the the people starts with who these players are as individuals and defensively to you know you need to be able to react you need to have the wherewithal to know you know you need to study this team that you're playing to know their sets and where they like to get the ball to their receivers and their running backs.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: So it's uh there's a lot that goes into this game that we don't talk about on a weekly basis about the study and the prep ahead of time and it seems like these linebackers really have that part figured out at least they did against Arizona State and Colorado so we'll see if when we get into a little better competition.
- 26:25SPEAKER_06: Yeah I love the focus on that dude and it's a big it's a that might be the single biggest change in mindset for the football program is that like no you have good players now.
- 26:36SPEAKER_06: Before in the 2010s and even arguably in the 2000s like Texas Tech kind of ran on this cope and I mean I'm I mean that very affectionately cope in like a no we don't get the five stars but we get the hidden gems the overlooked guys you know that uh everyone that you teen ain't in or oh you overlooked and we're gonna go like hey we know you can ball so come to Texas Tech and show them and sure that works sometimes but it's it's not the same as having a full stable of horses and now that we have some dogs on the team like you are the you are the head you're the guy that you're the king with the crown on dude and it's it it doesn't happen unless you have some real soldiers there man and we got some we got some special forces dude it's it's insane like I don't think this is obviously beyond any TexTe football team's imagination of how good these teams are like talent wise.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah you look at AJ Holmes bulldozing that right guard for Arizona State and you're just like we're just better like you're just better straight up like you're you're stronger you're faster you're more talented and you showed it off this was one of those games where it really was evident that we had a much better team a much better talented group of guys than Arizona State and they took full advantage you obviously as a coaching staff you need to get the mental right for it you know but you you put it all together for this one so awesome performance overall I'm thrilled uh watching that game I was you know we were talking about being happy watching Texas tech football I was happy every second of that game outside of the Jacoby fumble like once once Ben Roberts basically got the pick six it was just cruising from there.
- 28:20SPEAKER_06: You you you do say I'm gonna I am going to say something about the other side for a second um you are kind of disappointed with how bad Arizona State is to be honest yeah um because A we like Kenny Dillingham Joey likes Kenny Dillingham he's a great awesome fun coach to have in the conference and Arizona State is a team that makes the Big 12 look better when they're good.
- 28:43SPEAKER_06: And it sucks to see them suck.
- 28:46SPEAKER_06: Like I would it would have been great to for that to be a matchup that people actually turn to go, okay Texas Tech, which I think they did don't get me wrong like from the score wise.
- 28:54SPEAKER_06: But it's just it would have been cooler had they had some spice a little salt you know in their blood to to actually come into Lubbock and uh push on us.
- 29:03SPEAKER_06: They just never did and I think they're gonna be in a prolonged season they may not even go bowling.
- 29:08SPEAKER_06: So it's it's just it's a it's a tough scene out there in Tucson and not Tucson Tempe um they probably hate me for saying that um but that team in Tucson now that's the Arizona State team to watch this year the the Arizona team to watch this year.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: So yeah um all right dude put a bow on that's do we want to talk about Cincinnati or do you want to look at the overlook let's let's talk about Cincinnati first let's talk about Cincinnati first 11 a.m central time 12 local time FS1 Cincinnati Ohio Nippert Stadium the Texas Tech Red Raiders are coming in and I want to start off like this this game it felt like this game should have a lot more buzz but obviously with what transpired over the offseason with Brendan Soresby that buzz seems to have subsided and that's just what what I get from you know kind of browsing the socials this week there's not a lot of like Sincey hate and they're obviously they're coming off two straight losses so their fan base is a little down the dumps right now but you know Texas Tech even taking some shots in the offseason to Cincy uh Scott Satterfield said some things in the offseason Cody Campbell said some things in the offseason and I I wanted to ask you do you think the Cincinnati fans still care deeply about this game?
- 30:33SPEAKER_06: No.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 30:35SPEAKER_06: I don't I think I think that like you said the the the spiciness subsided whenever Brent the Brendan Sorbsby thing just fell apart.
- 30:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah and I think some time in the news cycle has gone on long enough to where it's just they don't really care anymore and it does not help that they look like they kind of stink.
- 30:54SPEAKER_06: So it and I I mean that like it's just like that'll take the wind right out of your sails.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: You know so it's you can a loss to West Virginia man lost to West Virginia really do that.
- 31:03SPEAKER_06: Not a good look right now and you can be as salty about it as you want but like if you know you don't got the the guns to to fire back right now on the field how much mess can you really talk yeah yeah and I think that's really what it is.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: You're you're on a really down point in your season you started off actually probably a little better than what people thought um I guess.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah and I mean you know you look at caliber of opponent it wasn't great at the beginning of the season's the only decent win.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: And you were still 4-0 you know you're still 4-0 to start the season you made through your non-con yeah it wasn't a good non-con but you still made it through had a little scare for Miami of Ohio but you still won that game beat Kansas State who's actually you know they're competent solid team they're not bad um you know they're better than Arizona State probably um we'll see we'll see you know as the season goes but yeah I think we'll see you're coming off two straight losses and you're just like man number eight team Texas Tech just rolled Arizona State you know are we it's an 11 a.m or noon game local time you know not necessarily you know the hype up of it so would what would you put your like scarometer at at a time okay okay um like like you kind of hit on it's 11 a.m so you don't have like that night fear about a stadium guy kind of getting going in at night which anyone anyone can um even the worst of teams if they have to fill in the stadium there which they're going to you're gonna have a top 10 team like even if you suck you're still gonna show up for that until until you get your face beat in and then you can leave um but that's what that's that's a great thing.
- 32:43SPEAKER_06: I think the 11am kind of takes the home field out of it your two two lost skid takes some home juice out of it.
- 32:52SPEAKER_06: And I'm sure that Cincinnati team's feeling a little deflated.
- 32:56SPEAKER_06: I'm sure they are they're not exactly feeling super confident in themselves especially their defense because every team they're playing in the past coup okay three of uh the six teams they played have scored more than 30 points on them.
- 33:07SPEAKER_06: So they're not exactly holding anybody down especially West Virginia who really lit them up.
- 33:12SPEAKER_06: But then again I mean West Virginia's got a great offense they're very retro 2010 Big 12 team right now.
- 33:18SPEAKER_06: Um but my screen meters at three and even if we had burn and burn sworesby at quarterback I don't know if I'd feel better or worse about it to be honest.
- 33:29SPEAKER_06: Maybe they would have wanted to slide us into a night game for that drama intrigue but that's that's where my head's at what about you um I don't I think this is a good crowd.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: I think this is a good student fan base.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: Uh I think they really show up there uh at Cincinnati and that in of itself and you still have a top eight team coming into your place.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: So from that perspective I think they are going to show out and I I do think there's going to be a home field advantage at Nipper.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: I think there usually is because it's a solid fan base.
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: It's a loud crowd it's a tougher environment to play I'll just straight up say that um I'd put my scareometer a little higher um you know you obviously took care of business and at Colorado but your road games have not been you know blowouts by any standard um this season so going back on the road is is always a little iffy right now for me so I'll put I'll put a five for now um when you look at the team a little further though you're like man this Cincinnati defense is not good no just just straight up not good at any in any level um not getting a lot of rush on the quarterback not getting a lot of pressure their secondary is not on the same page uh you know nobody on the linebacking core really scares you but what this matchup is it's it's like an immovable object versus an unstoppable force with tech's run defense and Cincinnati's run offense their run attack is really really solid I think they're averaging like 231 or something rushing yards a game.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: So let's go you know but clearly they have a really solid rushing attack and their offense is there.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: I mean they put up 42 point West Virginia does not have a good defense but they still put up 42 points um you know JC French their quarterback is the only Big 12 quarterback to have not thrown an interception this year.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: He's he has a 9 nothing touchdown to interception ratio so you know the last three games tech is averaging three interceptions a game so what what breaks you know uh it seems like you know if you've watched Texas Tech over the last couple weeks you're like you know they're clearly the more superior team talent wise but you know there's no denying that Cincinnati has had a strong offensive performance this season.
- 35:52SPEAKER_02: It's just that defense is very very not good.
- 35:56SPEAKER_06: I mean you you say that but they did only score seven points on Arizona.
- 36:00SPEAKER_06: Arizona's a good team Arizona's a good team is true but Arizona does not have our defense.
- 36:05SPEAKER_06: No no no so and I feel pretty good about our defensive line going up against their running the running attack.
- 36:10SPEAKER_06: I do.
- 36:11SPEAKER_06: And because that is something that we've not been concerned about in the least is is the uh the run attack at all.
- 36:16SPEAKER_06: You can burn us in through the air but I mean who isn't going to get a little torched up through the air if they throw on you a billion times you're gonna get beat occasionally so I expect a lot of that I do expect uh this this French guy to get um one at least one turnover against us I think he's gonna get his first one against us I really I Steven I think it's hard to overstate how much better our defense is than anything they've seen.
- 36:42SPEAKER_06: Truly especially I think it's a it's a huge contrast going from what is probably the worst defense of the Big 12 in West Virginia to going up against easily the best in Titus Tex.
- 36:54SPEAKER_06: So I think they're in for a rude awakening I think you're right I think I don't think the crowd will be in it for the first quarter before Will Hammond comes out confident as ever and starts lighting them up.
- 37:06SPEAKER_06: I think we're gonna score three titties in the first quarter uh quarter.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah I think that's uh I I don't I you know if we're just predicting the game I I I don't think it's gonna be an issue for Texas Tech but I do worry if we go back to you know starting off slow it may get a little tricky because it's always tougher on the road to come back from from a slow start than you know I I just need Will Hammond I think it all rides kind of on Will Hammond.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: Like I think the defense is going to do their thing they've clearly shown that they've improved and and are going to be more consistent throughout this season but Will Hammond is the X factor and it's gonna be every single week.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: You know you're gonna need him to show some stuff show a little shit to him and get going early uh and often and that's gonna ride for the rest of the way so um yeah I mean I I think Texas Tech should have this in the bag I think what are we um what's the line you know I do not I think I saw I think last I saw was like 12 points Texas Tech is ten and a half point favorites going into Cincinnati.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: So it has lowered since it opened but interesting I thought it was going to go the other way yeah it is interesting I'm I'm curious to see how the how the guys uh write off of positive momentum you know because we haven't had a game like this where we're coming off just an uh a beatdown of Arizona State you know everybody contributing on all levels you know there's always been something to take away and been like oh that didn't look good for Texas Tech now you're coming off a win after the bye week of like this really looked good so how do we continue this?
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: So I'll be curious.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: Dude I think we're gonna win um 43 to 24 I'll go 35 17 all right we're on the same page then yeah I think uh I think we'll take care of business in this one and uh yeah man I'm excited or do you think it's gonna be over in the first half I think we'll be sweating a little bit you think so you think it's gonna go to the fourth quarter I think it's I think it's gonna go be a fourth quarter game and then tech kind of shows who they are uh and tires out Cincy as the game goes on yeah and then kind of gets maybe a couple touchdowns in the fourth quarter to like a Colorado situation yeah a little Coloradoy feeling a little Coloradoy for this one but I don't know who's say or Colorado Cincinnati yeah yeah easy response I I think Colorado's the worst team in the Big 12 I know they played Utah tight but I think they're the worst team in the Big 12.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah they're probably the worst team 12 but still up for debate Arizona State got a chance Kansas has a chance you know Baylor's what's that time sneaking back Baylor sneaking back TCU can always go back down UCF UCF didn't even mention your favorite school um but we're focusing on the mid and the bad right now this past week was the best week for the Big 12 conference since Texas and OU left it was a highlight not only BYU beating Notre Dame which was so huge so huge seismic we were talking about this preseason ahead of time where nobody's even played football yet we were like this is the biggest Big 12 game on the schedule no doubt because we knew Notre Dame was going to be solid they didn't play anybody they haven't scheduled anybody all season it's it's BYU and Miami.
- 40:41SPEAKER_02: Those are the only two teams on their schedule that are worth a damn and Provo with everything that took place last year they were supposed to play BYU in the bowl game Notre Dame opted out like a bunch of wusses didn't play they go into Provo the students showed up it was an incredible environment and they beat them good like they made some mistakes down the stretch it was a close game you know I know there was some controversy with the final second on the clock whatever BYU showed who they were and it is such a good look for the conference as a whole to get wins like that that it raises everybody.
- 41:22SPEAKER_02: Everybody's talking about the Big 12 this week national podcast everybody's talking about hey how good is the Big 12 actually you know you have three teams in the top 10 you have Houston at 14 you have Arizona sneaking in at 25 Oklahoma State still kind of riding back in the uh in the 20s 30s range receiving votes category I mean you have some damn good teams in this conference this year.
- 41:44SPEAKER_06: Easily the best week of the Big 12 thus far as you kind of pointed out there.
- 41:48SPEAKER_06: Steven like you said there are three Big 12 teams in the top 10 that I don't think that's happened I I don't realize that's happened period.
- 41:57SPEAKER_06: Not even like in the old iteration of the Big 12.
- 42:00SPEAKER_06: It's it's a brave new world um other other conferences eating each other alive help that out but I don't want to use that as a discredit to the Big 12 because like BYU is doing the hard things tech sex doing the hard things Utah's doing the hard things it's hard to go undefeated regardless of where you are if you're in a power conference you're going undefeated in the G6 I'm not gonna even try to rip on them.
- 42:19SPEAKER_06: If you're undefeated in the G6 you should be in the 10 in the teens but it's it's it's awesome to see because you have more ranked teams in the top 10 than the SEC and that's huge.
- 42:31SPEAKER_06: That's huge for national respect and all that does is help slingshot you further further and further into the playoff conversation and all this is is momentum.
- 42:41SPEAKER_06: If you keep this ball this uh this small little uh snowball snowballing growing growing as it rolls downhill by the end of the season you can have a lot of big 12 teams in really good positions I think this is finally the year where you can break in two teams into the Big 12 you need to have your top dogs take care of business whether your name is Texas Tech, BYU Utah or Houston, you need to be taking care of business for the rest of the year because there's even a possibility that there could be three Big 12 teams in at the end of the year things break just right.
- 43:15SPEAKER_06: Other things happen to have to happen around the country for that to happen too but you've never been in a better position dude and this is just huge for the respect of the conference the stability of the conference and quite frankly the fun of the conference it's really no fun to be the conference that gets shot on all the time and sometimes it's rightfully so whenever you're speaking on it correctly.
- 43:39SPEAKER_06: But it's this is just a blast to see we have a lot of beefs with the AP twenty top twenty five but with the top ten they finally kind of did it right.
- 43:48SPEAKER_06: And it's hilarious dude literally the only ranked teams in the top twenty five that have two losses are SEC teams.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: I was just looking at that you have that's asinine.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: You have one ACC team, you have one independent, you have three Big 12, three Big Ten, two SEC that make up the top 10.
- 44:09SPEAKER_02: And both, like you said, both those SEC teams, Old Miss and Georgia, have a loss on the schedule.
- 44:13SPEAKER_02: Georgia's loss, not good to Albert.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Not good.
- 44:15SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 44:16SPEAKER_02: Old Miss's loss, not great to Florida.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: And they got absolutely boomed by Florida.
- 44:21SPEAKER_02: So you're starting to look even at the top.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: There's always, you know, in years past, there's always the SEC team that's undefeated.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: There's always the one that's kicking butt, you know, week in and week out.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: Usually it's a Georgia or an Alabama, you know, and you don't really have that.
- 44:35SPEAKER_02: You know, you saw I I do think Georgia's still the best team in the SEC.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: I think that they, you know, probably blew it to an Auburn team that they shouldn't have lost to, but hey, you got the loss.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: And you lost it at home, too.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: It's not a good loss.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: So, you know, Miami's a little Texas Tech 2025-ish, where you know, they're just kind of booming everywhere, even though they escape Florida State, rivalry game, weird things happen.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: But Miami clearly looks like the best of the best in the ACC.
- 45:03SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're gonna get anybody unless SMU kind of gets you know a little frisky here.
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: But you know, Louisville was expected to be pretty good, they're not.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Pitt free falling, just lost to Boston College, boo-boo.
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: Um, and then you're sitting here, you know, the schedules kind of play out for you as a conference.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: You know, tech uh we obviously have the easiest of the schedules.
- 45:26SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, if you look at the top contenders right now, and that is BYU, Utah Tech, and Houston.
- 45:32SPEAKER_02: Houston kind of pre-eliminated Oklahoma State from discussion.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, the Tulsa loss really is a bad, bad look for them.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if they're gonna recover with two conference losses as well.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: They just got one to Houston this week, though.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: Huge implications for the Big 12 with Houston, Utah.
- 45:52SPEAKER_02: It's a massive, massive conference game to kind of determine, hey, does Houston stay alive in this?
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: Because they look pretty darn good against Oklahoma State, but they have to go to Salt Lake City to play an undefeated Utah team.
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, that's gonna give a lot of like more a lot of like implications for how this conference is gonna play out.
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: Because if Utah's still undefeated going into the holy war along with BYU, I mean, sky's the limit.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: I think that's your best chance right there at getting three in.
- 46:24SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, dude.
- 46:25SPEAKER_06: Um, it's kind of funny to see Houston be in these pinnacle tilts.
- 46:28SPEAKER_06: The biggest Big 12 game was uh their visit to Lubbock, and now it's their their visit to Salt Lake.
- 46:33SPEAKER_06: Unfortunately for them, they're both road games against good teams.
- 46:37SPEAKER_06: I mean, Utah is starting to show some vulnerabilities.
- 46:41SPEAKER_06: Um, kind of the same stuff you were saying about us earlier in the year, um, especially with their offense, kind of like how we are criticizing our offense.
- 46:48SPEAKER_06: So um it'll be interesting to see if Utah's got enough in the tank to get over a good opponent.
- 46:54SPEAKER_06: That'll be a great game to watch.
- 46:56SPEAKER_06: I just I mean, I love our Hateful Eight clone boys, but I hope Arizona takes care of business in Tucson against the Cyclones.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: They're another one.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: I I didn't even mention them.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: And I didn't even mention them.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: Their only loss is to BYU.
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: BYU, yep.
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: So, you know, you still that's a that's a huge game for Texas Tech later on in the year.
- 47:15SPEAKER_06: That's next week, dude.
- 47:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:17SPEAKER_06: So crazy.
- 47:19SPEAKER_06: That's uh that's it's gonna be a spooky Halloween game hosting Arizona.
- 47:22SPEAKER_06: So that's big time, man.
- 47:24SPEAKER_06: And that's another huge game, and because Arizona will probably be in the teens if they win that game, you know, seeing how the big two uh top 25 shuffles.
- 47:32SPEAKER_06: And that's another tether in the cap for tech.
- 47:34SPEAKER_06: You know, of course, if we win that game, I don't want to sit here and assume things.
- 47:36SPEAKER_06: So um it's just dude, a super fun year for the Big 12, and unfortunately, the reason why I mean I say the word unfortunate because I mean we're not the ones that are the unfortunate ones.
- 47:49SPEAKER_06: It's because the Big 12 is not the random box anymore.
- 47:54SPEAKER_06: It's this year it is truly F tiers.
- 47:57SPEAKER_06: Truly we have incredible teams at the top, solid teams in the middle, and terrible teams.
- 48:05SPEAKER_06: So just like anywhere else.
- 48:06SPEAKER_06: That's not a criticism on the Big 12.
- 48:08SPEAKER_06: That's what we needed the whole time.
- 48:10SPEAKER_06: Parity destroys respect for the conference, and the SEC is about to experience that with all these teams who are spinning about the same, expecting the same results, they're gonna see a lot of losses.
- 48:19SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 48:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: It's um, you know, the the effect of the super conferences is that you know, you you have to play your schedule, and the SEC as um, you know, good of a decision actually for them to move to non-conference games.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: You know, maybe some some teams are are gonna drop one.
- 48:39SPEAKER_02: Maybe some of your top dogs that are usually winning these games are gonna drop a couple, and that's how it's kind of turning out this year.
- 48:45SPEAKER_02: Big Ten has been kind of a disaster.
- 48:47SPEAKER_02: You know, UCLA is the only undefeated team right now.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: Ohio State blew it to Texas earlier in the season.
- 48:52SPEAKER_02: That's one of your top dogs.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: Indiana couldn't get a foot down against Ohio State, and you know, they just don't.
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 49:00SPEAKER_02: Ohio State's still got some dudes on the scene, and now they don't have saying.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: So maybe they're falling out.
- 49:06SPEAKER_06: The Big Fall might have the good spice right now, dude.
- 49:08SPEAKER_06: Like we might have some good mojo.
- 49:10SPEAKER_06: I on it's it's not, I don't think it's crazy to see that say that.
- 49:13SPEAKER_06: Like BYU could win the national championship right now, dude.
- 49:16SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech could win the national championship right now.
- 49:19SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech could too, yeah.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's it's it's outrageous to say that just because of where we've come from.
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: But it's like, but you know, you look at the remaining games on the schedule, holy war, obvious implications.
- 49:35SPEAKER_06: If they're undefeated, whole might be the biggest holy war of all time.
- 49:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, it it's gonna be a top 10 holy war, it might be a top five holy war, like top three incredible.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: Um Texas Tech, Arizona, huge game.
- 49:50SPEAKER_02: I think Texas Tech at Oklahoma State is still a huge game for it's a surviving game for tech for Big 12 implications.
- 49:57SPEAKER_02: BYU really only has the holy war.
- 50:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, outside of that, UCF, Arizona State, Baylor, Kansas, Cincinnati for them.
- 50:04SPEAKER_06: That's breezy, dude.
- 50:06SPEAKER_02: So kind of breezy.
- 50:07SPEAKER_06: They might just walk to Arlington outside of our Utah.
- 50:10SPEAKER_02: Utah, obviously, playing Houston this week.
- 50:13SPEAKER_02: They have the Holy War and they play Arizona.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: So Utah's got three big games.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: Tech's got two, BYU's got one, Houston's got a couple left.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: Um, it's just it's a it's a fun time to be a big Big 12 fan.
- 50:29SPEAKER_02: It really is.
- 50:29SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 50:30SPEAKER_06: And it's it's not only just that, like it's not obviously not just the gridiron, and you got the shooty hoop starting to gear uh starting to rev its engines, dude.
- 50:38SPEAKER_06: You know, this is viewed as one of the single, if not best, conference for basketball.
- 50:42SPEAKER_06: So it's gonna be it's just it is a really good time to be a Big 12 fan because I know it's really easy to be kind of doom and gloom about our situation.
- 50:49SPEAKER_06: And in a lot of ways, there are truly some summits above our heads that really suck, like with TV deals and shit.
- 50:58SPEAKER_06: But it is great that the way you change that even slightly is getting eyeballs on you because you win football games.
- 51:06SPEAKER_06: So it's that's that's what's gotta happen.
- 51:08SPEAKER_06: And we unfortunately for our conference mates who maybe don't commit as much time and resources and uh want to win as badly as a Texas tech or BYU does, you're gonna have to take some some licks.
- 51:22SPEAKER_06: So it's it's just unfortunate, unfortunate uh math of the beast at the end of the day.
- 51:29SPEAKER_02: It will be interesting.
- 51:30SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be fun.
- 51:31SPEAKER_06: You all have to be Arkansas Razorbacks.
- 51:33SPEAKER_06: Oh, yikes.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: The sacrificial lambs, the Arkansas Razorbacks.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: Oh, they're so down bad.
- 51:45SPEAKER_02: They they hate their coach.
- 51:47SPEAKER_06: Hey, they just won't be the first SEC game in two years.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: Who'd they beat?
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: Vanderbilt?
- 51:51SPEAKER_06: Vanderbilt.
- 51:52SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 51:55SPEAKER_01: Yikes.
- 51:57SPEAKER_01: Second purgatory.
- 52:03SPEAKER_02: You mentioned it.
- 52:04SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech basketball ramping up.
- 52:06SPEAKER_02: We don't I haven't done my deep dive.
- 52:09SPEAKER_02: Uh it's coming, dude.
- 52:10SPEAKER_02: Season starts soon.
- 52:12SPEAKER_02: We we got a little time before it, but it was great to see them in in the news.
- 52:17SPEAKER_02: Great to see them head up for Media Day.
- 52:20SPEAKER_02: I thought it was really interesting that they brought Darien Williams, Donovan Atwell, and JT Topp into Media Day.
- 52:28SPEAKER_02: Um two of which I potentially might not play for the Steam this year.
- 52:36SPEAKER_02: And then JT Topin.
- 52:38SPEAKER_06: What's that?
- 52:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it could change.
- 52:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it could change.
- 52:43SPEAKER_01: Who knows?
- 52:44SPEAKER_01: It could change.
- 52:45SPEAKER_01: Tommy Castellanos was he's eligible, he's not eligible, he's eligible.
- 52:50SPEAKER_06: It you know, it's you need to find that judge and say he's not eligible anymore.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: Let me let me hit back up my guy at the Kentucky Court of Appeals.
- 52:58SPEAKER_06: Or you're gonna have a lot of eggs on your house, buddy.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: No, man.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: Wonderful, wonderful use of uh of Tommy in in this game on Saturday, by the way.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: As a true backup, yeah, after we were winning by a million points, then you throw him in.
- 53:12SPEAKER_02: Great job.
- 53:13SPEAKER_06: He is crazy quick.
- 53:14SPEAKER_06: That kid is crazy quick.
- 53:16SPEAKER_02: He's quick.
- 53:17SPEAKER_02: Great job not throwing him in until the fourth quarter.
- 53:21SPEAKER_02: He's quick, great, that's cool.
- 53:23SPEAKER_02: JT Toppin, the news aiming for late December, he told John Fanta, who is one of the goats of college basketball, guy rules.
- 53:34SPEAKER_02: Um, we'll see.
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: I think it's gonna be more January, uh, probably a couple conference games in, I think, is when you want to get him going.
- 53:43SPEAKER_02: But obviously, you know, so much is gonna be dependent on his recovery from now until then.
- 53:48SPEAKER_02: But it was interesting that he finally gave a timetable because Grant McCaslin will not.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: He refuses in every bit of media that he's done since the season kind of got ramped up.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: He will not give an indication, and I think it's great that he's doing that.
- 54:02SPEAKER_02: But for JT to kind of come out and say, hey, I'm aiming for late December, I think is encouraging, you know, for a guy that um obviously with the five by five being passed, you don't really have a chance to redshirt now.
- 54:15SPEAKER_02: No medical redshirts, you just kind of have to go.
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, it's good, it's good, and I hope he's taking his recovery, you know, as steady as he needs to, because we'll need him at the end of the season.
- 54:27SPEAKER_06: I mean, that kind of sets him up.
- 54:28SPEAKER_06: If that stays on schedule, that sets him up to start Big 12 conference play.
- 54:32SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 54:32SPEAKER_06: So that's uh that's really all you want at the end of the day.
- 54:35SPEAKER_06: You know, you can take you can take your hits on the in the out-of-conference, but performing the Big 12 is really what matters.
- 54:39SPEAKER_02: And well, it's also you don't have a ton of out-of-conference stuff that that spooks you.
- 54:44SPEAKER_06: Um you had a few games.
- 54:46SPEAKER_02: You got a few games.
- 54:48SPEAKER_06: Like uh, who is it, the the the the Delta Devils buddy?
- 54:52SPEAKER_02: Uh Bethune Cookman.
- 54:54SPEAKER_02: Keep it prepod.
- 54:56SPEAKER_02: We were talking about Stonehill Duquesne earlier, prepod.
- 54:59SPEAKER_02: Shout out.
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: We play Stonehill, New Orleans.
- 55:02SPEAKER_06: Here you are, talking miss.
- 55:04SPEAKER_02: Omaha Incarnate Word.
- 55:06SPEAKER_06: Omaha's like always in March Madness.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: No.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 55:11SPEAKER_02: No, Omaha, no.
- 55:13SPEAKER_02: No, no, Mississippi State.
- 55:16SPEAKER_02: That's the one.
- 55:17SPEAKER_02: Delta Devils.
- 55:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, baby.
- 55:19SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't I'll be tuned in on the 28th of December to watch the Delta Devils play in Lubbock, Texas on ESPN Plus at 7 30 p.m.
- 55:27SPEAKER_02: Uh we do have Duke.
- 55:29SPEAKER_02: We have Duke, Louisville, USC, Illinois.
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: So we do have some some toughies.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: There's some toughies.
- 55:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, Illinois's good, Louisville's 11, Duke is two, USC's ranked.
- 55:41SPEAKER_06: We're we're we're here.
- 55:42SPEAKER_06: I know we're I can spend a whole time, a lot of time on it, but if all these boys get cleared and JT gets healthy pretty quick, what kind of expectations do you think there's for the season?
- 55:54SPEAKER_02: National championship expectations.
- 55:56SPEAKER_02: If if JT comes back and is JT Topping and looks like JT Toppin, I mean, the addition of Darien Williams, Donovan Atwell back, one of the best shooters in college basketball.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, you brought in a really talented group of guards that I think will be interesting.
- 56:15SPEAKER_02: Um, but again, let me do my deep dive and really understand.
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: But uh, we're starting to see some stuff.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: Some clips are coming out from secret scrimmages, um, a lot of hype up.
- 56:24SPEAKER_02: I mean, we're 19 in the preseason poll right now, fifth in the Big 12 poll, but that's more of a testament to the Big 12 than anything, and you know, up in the air on uh on eligibility for a lot of these, you know, key key players for you.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: So um I think you're in for a good year.
- 56:41SPEAKER_02: If you have everybody and uh everybody that's on this roster right now that is expecting to play for this team, if you have them play for this team, you're gonna have a darn good ball club.
- 56:50SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, dude.
- 56:51SPEAKER_06: All right, man.
- 56:52SPEAKER_06: That was a happy episode.
- 56:53unknown: Hey, man.
- 56:54SPEAKER_06: Anything else to talk about?
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: No, I think that's it.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: I think we can finish her off like we always do.
- 57:00SPEAKER_06: Beautiful Ann Arbor, Michigan, nearly 11 p.m.
- 57:05SPEAKER_02: Filmed filmed from Detroit, Michigan.
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: The Detroit, the the Marriott airport.
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: It's not great.
- 57:12SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's very nice.
- 57:18SPEAKER_02: Uh at least they added a little aesthetic to uh to the Marriott over here.
- 57:23SPEAKER_02: No, I'm I'm very thankful and glad to be here.
- 57:25SPEAKER_06: Um Marriott.
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Mr.
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: Marriott.
- 57:31SPEAKER_02: Um, song of the week.
- 57:33SPEAKER_06: Steven, I couldn't help myself.
- 57:35SPEAKER_06: I'd do another meme.
- 57:36SPEAKER_06: Uh-oh.
- 57:37SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go with the Ice Age song.
- 57:42SPEAKER_06: What?
- 57:43SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go with the Ice Age song for the original Ice Age.
- 57:47SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna go with their uh traveling montage song by Rusted Roots.
- 57:52SPEAKER_06: So that is Cindy on my way.
- 57:55unknown: Simeon.
- 57:57SPEAKER_07: Simeon my way.
- 57:59SPEAKER_07: Simeon my way.
- 58:01SPEAKER_07: Simeon my way.
- 58:03SPEAKER_07: Simeon On the way.
- 58:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's now okay.
- 58:08SPEAKER_01: I was like, on my way.
- 58:12SPEAKER_01: On the way.
- 58:15SPEAKER_02: I thought you were gonna do when you said, well, I guess when you mentioned on the way, I thought you were gonna do the brother bear, Phil Collins.
- 58:25SPEAKER_06: Hey, don't spoil a future song of the week.
- 58:29SPEAKER_01: Everybody, I'm on my way.
- 58:32SPEAKER_06: We are doing Send Me On My Way by Russ and Root.
- 58:35SPEAKER_06: On my way.
- 58:35SPEAKER_06: Their only song, by the way.
- 58:36SPEAKER_06: Their only song.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: I guess so.
- 58:39SPEAKER_01: Um featured in Ice Age.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: Great choice.
- 58:43SPEAKER_06: Thank you.
- 58:45SPEAKER_06: Your turn.
- 58:48SPEAKER_01: Great choice.
- 58:49SPEAKER_01: I don't know how I could follow out about this.
- 58:50SPEAKER_06: I'm sitting on my way to Texas Tech's football Big 12 championship.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 58:55SPEAKER_02: Um my song of the week.
- 59:03SPEAKER_02: I was uh I was doing a little throwback.
- 59:05SPEAKER_02: Um I was listening to some old jams, some kind of punk rock, you know, angsty teen type of vibe.
- 59:12SPEAKER_02: Uh I was listening to a little Sum 41 this past week.
- 59:17SPEAKER_02: And my song of the week this week, mostly this is a shout-out to Kenny Dillingham and the ASU Sun Devils.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, In Too Deep.
- 59:27SPEAKER_02: Some 41.
- 59:29SPEAKER_02: Because boy was Kenny in too deep in that game against Lovick.
- 59:33SPEAKER_02: Lost in the sauce.
- 59:34SPEAKER_02: He was lost in the sauce, man.
- 59:36SPEAKER_02: And all I could think of when I was, you know, punking out, listening to this, being mad at my parents, was man, Kenny Dillagam felt this way going going into Lovick, Texas on a Saturday.
- 59:50SPEAKER_02: And uh that was my song of the week, In Too Deep, Sum 41.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_06: Look at you popping out some old punk pop, whatever genre the heck that was.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_02: 2000's punk pop.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_06: That music is like dead.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_02: Well, we're bringing it back, baby.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_02: The Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, that too.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_02: I think I think old Moe was dead until you brought it back.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_02: You resurrected it from the original Ice Age movie, which was the song is much older than the Ice Age movie.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_06: Well, much older, but like like 10 years.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: So 2002, Ice Age came out.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_02: Oh two, baby.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:00:49SPEAKER_02: So it was it was making its way through the eight the radio waves.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: On my way.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_02: That uh thank thank you for that.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_02: Thank you for a wonderful song.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_06: It's gonna be just I had a really good song point, like actual good song from like TechStech alumni and stuff, but yeah.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_06: This I don't know what I don't know what came over me.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_01: You can bust that out at any point.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_02: Sometimes the song of the week just calls to you.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_06: Sometimes exactly, dude.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_02: Sometimes you're expecting to do you know a really good, well-thought-out song that has some purpose to it, and then you switch to this kiss by Faith Hill last minute.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_02: And that's the beauty of the song of the week.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_06: And it's being sent on your way by the rusted root.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_01: Oh my way.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_06: Oh my god.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_02: You can follow them being Tristan on Twitter.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_02: Tristan's at Tristy Mick.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: I'm at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_02: Pod on Twitter at talking tech pod.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: Saga League playlist on my way.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: Apple Music Spotify.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_02: We appreciate you all listening to our buffoonery.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_02: And we're hoping for a 7-0 Texas tech after this week.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_02: Everybody enjoy the game.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_02: We appreciate you guys listening.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_02: Always Wreck'em Tech.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_02: Oh Moy.
