- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, August 23 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22Of this Sunday, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. The collect which prays for an increase of faith, hope, and charity, re echoes the teaching of the Apostle in the Epistle and that of the Master in the Gospel. The Jews wanted to impose the Mosaic Law on Christians.
- 0:47Saint Paul shows that it is not the law which gives holiness to souls since before the law Abraham, father of the Jewish people was sanctified by his faith in Jesus. All those therefore Jews or Pagans who enter into the church and put their faith in the merits of the Passion of Christ will be saved. Our divine Savior indeed heals all the lepers Jews or Samaritans who have recourse to him. Arise, said Jesus to the latter. Thy faith hath made thee whole.
- 1:35It is he who through his church gives back health to the souls of those whether Jews or Gentiles who come to him. By faith we put in Jesus all our hope as we say in the offertory for he is our refuge as we proclaim in the Alleluia verse. And in the collect and the post communion we ask for the virtue of charity which makes us love the divine law and makes us practice it. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
- 2:23The Introit. Bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant. Wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee? Bestir thyself, O Lord, to vindicate thy own cause, and do not neglect the plea of thy suppliants. O God, why hast thou altogether abandoned us?
- 2:52Sheep of thy own pasturing, must we feel the fires of thy vengeance? Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant. Wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee? Bestir thyself, O Lord, to vindicate thy own cause, and do not neglect the plea of thy suppliants.
- 3:37The Collect, let us pray. Almighty everlasting God, grant us increase of faith, hope, and charity, and fit us to obtain what thou dost promise by making us love what thou commandest through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Galatians. Brethren, the promises you know of were made to Abraham and his offspring.
- 4:27It does not, by the way, say to thy descendants as if it meant a number of people. It says to thy offspring in the singular, meaning Christ. And this is my contention. The law coming into being four hundred and thirty years afterwards cannot unmake the disposition which God made so long ago and cancel the promise. If our inheritance depends on observing the law then it is not the inheritance secured to us by promise.
- 5:07That was promised to Abraham as a free gift. What then is the purpose of the law? It was brought in to make room for transgression while we waited for the coming of that posterity to whom the promise had been made. Its terms were dictated by angels acting through a spokesman. A spokesman represents more than one, and there's only one god.
- 5:39Is the law an infringement then of god's promises? That is not to be thought of. Doubtless, if a law had been given that was capable of imparting life to us, it would have been for the law to bring us justification. But in fact, scripture represents us as all under the bondage of sin. It was faith in Jesus Christ that was to impart the promised blessing to all those who believe in him.
- 6:16The gradual, Bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant, wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee? Bestir thyself, Lord, to vindicate thy own cause. Do not forget the taunts hurled at thy servants. Alleluia. Alleluia.
- 6:42Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation unto generation. Alleluia. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At this time Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem and was passing between Samaria and Galilee. And as he was going into a village 10 men that were lepers came towards him.
- 7:17They stood far off crying aloud, Jesus, master, have pity on us. He met them with the words, go and show yourselves to the priests and thereupon as they went they were made clean. One of them finding that he was cured came back praising God aloud and threw himself at Jesus' feet with his face to the ground to thank him. And this was a Samaritan. Jesus answered, Were not all tin made clean?
- 8:03And the other nine, where are they? Not one has come back to give God the praise except this stranger. And he said to him, arise and go on thy way. Thy faith has brought thee recovery. The offertory.
- 8:30Lord, my trust in thee is not shaken. Still I cry, thou art my God. My fate is in thy hands. The secret. Look favorably, Lord, upon thy people and upon thy people's gifts.
- 8:52Let this offering move thy compassion, persuading thee to grant us pardon and an answer to our prayers through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The preface of the Most Holy Trinity. Just it is and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, who together with thine only begotten son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord, not in the oneness of a single person, but in the trinity of one substance. For what we believe by thy revelation of thy glory, the same do we believe of thy son, the same of the Holy Ghost without difference or separation so that in confessing the true and eternal Godhead distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored.
- 10:16In praise of which the angels and archangels, the cherubim also and Seraphim day by day exalt without end with one voice saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
- 10:55The communion. Lord, thou hast given us bread from heaven, all contentment, all sweetness to the taste. The Post Communion. Let us pray. We who have partaken of the heavenly sacrament pray Lord that we may draw ever nearer to our eternal ransom through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 11:38Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God.
