SPEAKER_04: Welcome to the Comedy Podcast, where comedy meets your slash my commute.
• 0:06
SPEAKER_04: I'm your host, Dave Thompson.
• 0:07
SPEAKER_04: This is episode number 16.
• 0:09
SPEAKER_04: And I'm here with a legend to the IE comedy scene.
• 0:14
SPEAKER_04: I'm here with the one and only Johnny Gold.
• 0:16
  SPEAKER_04: What's up, Johnny?
• 0:16
  SPEAKER_04: How you doing?
• 0:17
  SPEAKER_04: What's going on, Dave?
• 0:19
  SPEAKER_04: I'm chilling.
• 0:21
SPEAKER_04: I I might sound a little bit different than normal.
• 0:24
SPEAKER_04: I'm using only one AirPod in the car because yesterday I dropped my AirPod case and it didn't open, or at least I thought it didn't open.
• 0:33
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_04: But when that happened, one of the AirPods flew out.
• 0:37
SPEAKER_04: And then when I was, I realized, huh, I don't have an AirPod.
• 0:42
SPEAKER_04: So then I went back to the parking lot and somebody ran it over.
• 0:46
SPEAKER_04: So now we only have one AirPod.
• 0:50
SPEAKER_01: I used to have AirPods, and every time I dropped the case, one would go somewhere you couldn't find.
• 0:56
  SPEAKER_04: Isn't it insane?
• 0:58
SPEAKER_04: It's like no matter what it drops on, it bounces like it's a kid in a freaking uh trampoline park.
• 1:05
  SPEAKER_04: Dude, it just flies.
• 1:07
  SPEAKER_04: It's insane.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_04: But Johnny, thank you so much for being on.
• 1:11
SPEAKER_04: You know, there's a secret episode that we did before where we were talking loose, we were talking about all kinds of stuff.
• 1:19
  SPEAKER_02: Sure.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_04: But but Johnny, let me let me tell you, I'm so excited to have you on the podcast.
• 1:26
SPEAKER_04: And I would like to personally say, I didn't start the other podcast like this, I should have.
• 1:30
SPEAKER_04: Um, but you've been really cool to me.
• 1:34
SPEAKER_04: You've been very kind to me.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_04: We we have roasts that we do back and forth.
• 1:39
SPEAKER_04: I feel like you're uh a really a nice person in the community.
• 1:44
SPEAKER_04: You do say what's on your mind, like you're not afraid to say what's on your mind, but you're very funny, and it's it's awesome to have you in the scene, Johnny.
• 1:53
SPEAKER_04: So I I appreciate you coming on.
• 1:54
  SPEAKER_04: Thank you very much.
• 1:55
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, thanks, Dave.
• 1:56
SPEAKER_00: I appreciate what you're doing in the scene too.
• 1:58
SPEAKER_00: As I mentioned, uh, my podcast, Grandmother's House.
• 2:01
  SPEAKER_00: Grandma's House.
• 2:02
  SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
• 2:03
SPEAKER_04: Everybody check out his podcast with the one and only Santiago.
• 2:06
SPEAKER_04: Check it out, check it out.
• 2:08
SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, I I think there should be more niceties.
• 2:14
SPEAKER_01: I think now this generation of comics, even though they've had gross battle at the comedy store, that's kind of separate from the from the community.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_01: You know, but there's really no reason we can't be nice.
• 2:30
  SPEAKER_01: I I don't uh I don't know.
• 2:35
SPEAKER_04: I jealousy and personality clashes, I think, would be the number one reason that people don't want to be nice to each other.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_01: I I could see that, and then you're not gonna get along with everybody, especially all the people that we meet.
• 2:47
SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna get along with everybody.
• 2:49
  SPEAKER_01: It's it's uh it's hard, you know.
• 2:53
SPEAKER_01: Sometimes you feel like a politician.
• 2:55
SPEAKER_01: You'll be in a room with all these people, and then you're like, I don't know what to say, or stuff like that.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_01: And I think you just have to find the people that you vibe with, and then you know what Chris Rock said?
• 3:08
SPEAKER_01: Chris Rock said, I don't think you should go out and do comedy with a group of people.
• 3:15
SPEAKER_01: You should just you should just do it by yourself.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_01: And I think that after doing it a while, that makes sense because sometimes when you're with a group, it can be construed as a click, and then people are like, oh, he's in this click and that click.
• 3:31
  SPEAKER_01: And you know, I I don't know, that's a good point.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_01: There's just so many personalities that you're bound not to get along with somebody.
• 3:40
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and you know, even for me, like when I first started, you know, I was kind of told when I first began doing mics at OC, I was kind of told that the IE scene did have a lot of clicks, and it might seem hard to fit in there.
• 3:56
SPEAKER_04: And then when I went, I I I did notice that, yeah, I guess you could say there was clicks, but I kind of just feel like now that I'm in it, it it's more just like friend groups that have known each other for a while that are very I mean, if you want to call that a click, I guess, but like I don't necessarily feel like it's it's it's people that won't allow other people into the group, but rather that there is a lot of people with a lot of history between each other and years of friendship and hanging out, you know, the hangs during the mics and the shows, you know, and and it does kind of feel like you have to work your way into those groups via doing those hangs.
• 4:34
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know what I mean?
• 4:35
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I agree.
• 4:36
SPEAKER_01: I I think also the way you came in, you came in hot, you know, you're doing a lot, and sometimes people take that as like, oh, he just started, he's doing all this.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_01: But in all actuality, we need like about five more Dave Thompsons because we're trying to pick up that would be a lot of pounds, but besides that, that wouldn't be a lot of pounds.
• 5:03
SPEAKER_04: You can't put five Dave Thompsons in a truck, the weight limit will go over.
• 5:08
SPEAKER_01: But if what we need, all it's gonna do is is get more spots, and that's what we need.
• 5:15
SPEAKER_01: Like we just recently uh Mia from Boondocks, who is now in charge of we're gonna do boondocks every Monday, an open mic.
• 5:27
SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be run by her and Marco Trinidad.
• 5:32
SPEAKER_01: And we kind of had maybe some other people.
• 5:34
SPEAKER_04: I'm hearing that it might be some rotating hosts, actually.
• 5:37
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she is.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_01: We talked to her last night.
• 5:39
  SPEAKER_01: We had a we had a I saw a chatterbox.
• 5:42
  SPEAKER_01: I I gotta commend her.
• 5:44
SPEAKER_01: She stayed from the first comic to the last comic.
• 5:47
  SPEAKER_01: I'm like, man.
• 5:48
  SPEAKER_03: Wow.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_01: That's that's that that literally is torture, in my opinion.
• 5:54
SPEAKER_04: That's that's that's the like number one thing that tells me that she herself is not a comic.
• 5:59
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_01: I mean, from start to finish, I'm like, God, you were and then last trooper.
• 6:07
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, last night we were talking, and I don't want to speak out of terms, so I'm not gonna tell you what she's gonna do.
• 6:11
SPEAKER_01: Uh, but she is she is gonna have rotating hosts, and it's gonna be more professional.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_01: She wants to build it up like what you're doing to get the place packed out, and it's so great because you can do two spots to start your week if you don't start it at all.
• 6:27
SPEAKER_04: If you don't start it on Sunday, that's beautiful, and I think too, like, and and I I've discussed this with a lot of people that have gone to that mic, even from before.
• 6:38
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 6:39
SPEAKER_04: But when you when you keep doing it at a venue and you get a venue like that that's a bar, used to the thought of like, hey, we're doing this every week.
• 6:48
SPEAKER_04: There are local comedians or maybe even comedians from out of town that are gonna come in, they're working on material, they're trying to get funny.
• 6:55
SPEAKER_04: We're gonna give them a platform and they're gonna be buying drinks, they're gonna bring friends that are gonna be buying drinks.
• 7:00
SPEAKER_04: It's an it's an open mic show.
• 7:02
SPEAKER_04: And I think that's one thing that I didn't understand early on is that there are people out there that like to go to open mic shows.
• 7:12
SPEAKER_04: There's there's a whole group of people that actually enjoy seeing how the process is done and seeing how the jokes are made, like when they're first said from their, you know, humble beginnings to then seeing it at a show where it's very funny.
• 7:27
SPEAKER_04: You know, in fact, I would say the biggest uh like comedy fans that we have out are the Morgans, and they live in Corona, and they show up to every single Mike and show that's at that place because it's so close to them.
• 7:40
SPEAKER_04: Yep, and they love comedy so much they're even letting me do a show in their front yard.
• 7:44
  SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'll be there.
• 7:44
  SPEAKER_01: I I love that.
• 7:45
SPEAKER_01: I already got my food order in.
• 7:47
SPEAKER_01: Last time they messed up turkey sandwich with uh some nice salt and vinegar potato chips because I went to Marco Trinidad.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_01: I was there at the last one, remember where you were on the panel?
• 8:00
  SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
• 8:01
SPEAKER_01: And I went there and I'm like, who ate the turkey sandwiches?
• 8:04
  SPEAKER_01: I don't eat red meat.
• 8:05
SPEAKER_01: And I was kind of depressed, but I stayed and watched the comedy show, even though I just I'm glad you stayed even though you didn't get your sandwich, Johnny.
• 8:14
  SPEAKER_01: Like a child.
• 8:15
SPEAKER_01: But but the thing is, what I love about Mia is she works at Boondocks.
• 8:21
SPEAKER_01: So she was highly motivated to get people to come down to the open mic.
• 8:27
SPEAKER_01: Yes, yes, working there as a and she knows everybody and she's telling them we're gonna have this open mic, I'm gonna be in charge of it, and uh and Marco's gonna be in charge and and whatever.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_01: And I love it because boondocks could be a good hang after, as you know, outside.
• 8:48
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_01: And uh I think anybody that is putting work out here, because you know, there's no out here they don't have slotted mics like like they do with the Hollywood uh comedy.
• 9:02
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_01: You know, we're gonna I was thinking about trying that Astronaut City tonight because I talked to Josh uh Plantango yesterday and he said uh I heard it's great.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think uh tonight is uh the guys that do Ontario the the guy that does the shows, you know, Greg Sanchez and Yeah, makeshift comedy.
• 9:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, who's the other guy?
• 9:30
SPEAKER_01: Greg Alex Dorazio or Alex Dorazio and Greg Sanchez, yeah.
• 9:36
SPEAKER_01: And it seems like that was kind of cool.
• 9:39
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're great.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_04: I actually saw a show that they put on at a skate shop somewhere in LA.
• 9:45
SPEAKER_04: I forgot exactly what city it was in, and it was so sick.
• 9:48
SPEAKER_04: They had like a band play.
• 9:49
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think before they were called the GIMPs, and they were all dressed up is as GIMPs.
• 9:55
  SPEAKER_04: It's kind of crazy.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_01: I they did a show at there where they were renting a house, the backyard, and then they had a band afterwards.
• 10:05
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that was in uh Rancho Cucumonga, right?
• 10:09
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was.
• 10:10
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was really cool.
• 10:13
SPEAKER_01: I was very happy because I bought a Jimmy Johns turkey sandwich.
• 10:17
SPEAKER_01: No, it was Jersey Mike's.
• 10:20
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 10:21
SPEAKER_04: If there's food the barbecue, what was it?
• 10:24
SPEAKER_01: They oh yeah, yeah, the guy who is uh Tox.
• 10:28
  SPEAKER_01: From Tox Tox?
• 10:29
  SPEAKER_04: Tox Too Much?
• 10:30
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 10:31
SPEAKER_04: I forgot what the name of his barbecue company is called, but I heard he's he's fire on the on the queue.
• 10:36
  SPEAKER_04: That's what I heard.
• 10:37
SPEAKER_01: And also, uh, I guess uh, you know, uh Gil is gonna have his show back uh at Porchatoria.
• 10:49
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I saw that that they had uh done the first um the first one back and then it was a success.
• 10:55
  SPEAKER_04: That's what I saw.
• 10:56
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're gonna have a book show this month, I think.
• 11:00
  SPEAKER_01: Which is cool.
• 11:01
  SPEAKER_01: Awesome.
• 11:01
  SPEAKER_01: Now, Dave.
• 11:02
SPEAKER_04: Let me ask you, because you've been in the scene for a while.
• 11:05
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 11:06
SPEAKER_04: You've been in the scene for a while.
• 11:08
SPEAKER_04: Um how many years have you been in the scene for?
• 11:11
SPEAKER_01: Out here when I bought my house in 2012.
• 11:14
SPEAKER_01: I had stopped doing comedy for two or three years.
• 11:16
SPEAKER_01: I was trying to have a kid with my girlfriend.
• 11:18
SPEAKER_01: So I was kind of I really didn't start in in the Anland Empire till like uh maybe 2015.
• 11:27
  SPEAKER_01: Maybe.
• 11:28
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 11:29
  SPEAKER_01: It's all a blur.
• 11:31
SPEAKER_01: Uh I started in the Flappers over over 10 years.
• 11:34
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Flappers in Claremont was a big hang.
• 11:38
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 11:39
SPEAKER_01: They don't have that anymore.
• 11:40
SPEAKER_04: Uh that's where now we gotta go to Burbank to get those.
• 11:44
SPEAKER_01: To get those mics in.
• 11:46
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 11:47
SPEAKER_01: The Flappers Claremont was cool.
• 11:50
SPEAKER_01: And uh that's where I met a lot of uh IE comics, and uh there was there wasn't really any open mics.
• 11:58
SPEAKER_01: There was uh the hideaway and Worthington.
• 12:04
  SPEAKER_01: Was it Worthington's?
• 12:05
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was about it.
• 12:08
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's that's actually what what I was gonna ask you is how do you feel like the scenes change from then until now?
• 12:14
SPEAKER_04: And at least from what I've heard, I feel like there's a lot more going on right now.
• 12:18
SPEAKER_01: Oh no, it's a billion times better than there was.
• 12:21
SPEAKER_01: And I'll tell you why if I can be honest.
• 12:24
SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm not gonna say anything disparaging about certain groups of people that used to run the scene, but those people are now fading away.
• 12:33
SPEAKER_01: And now we have we're gonna have so many good spots thanks to you, Mike Baker.
• 12:39
SPEAKER_01: I talked to Travis Smith last night, he's doing his thing.
• 12:43
SPEAKER_01: We got Boondock, we got uh, you know, uh Marco Trinidad.
• 12:50
SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, it's just it's changed really since you came in and certain certain of the people that I just mentioned to kind of shift it towards more positivity and not so much a click, which was out here.
• 13:09
SPEAKER_01: You know, it was very click.
• 13:11
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think the thing for me is that like, look, I I I just want to inspire people to to just go out and do the thing.
• 13:19
SPEAKER_04: You know, I I was inspired by other people that are just like go-getters comedically.
• 13:26
SPEAKER_04: Like when I when I first started going out towards Hollywood, I I met Kat Bird at a little tiny room in a little place called Hollywood Comedy, and there was like five people in there, and I knew that she was like touring with with really, really amazing comedians that are household names, and that you know, she was working at the comedy store and stuff.
• 13:47
SPEAKER_04: And I just saw her work ethic, and then she was just a really nice, kind person.
• 13:52
SPEAKER_04: She gave me like her personal phone number.
• 13:54
  SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's so funny.
• 13:55
SPEAKER_04: She like, you know, would would let me hit her up for getting on at the store, like open mics.
• 14:01
SPEAKER_04: She would like come out and do shows with me and stuff.
• 14:04
SPEAKER_04: And it was just really cool just to see somebody that was doing so well and on the come up be so kind to me and and be out doing all this stuff and doing the hard work, even though they were, you know, gain gaining notoriety.
• 14:17
SPEAKER_04: And to see where she's at now, headlining clubs, and she just got signed with UTA, and she might be doing all this other stuff, like, is awesome.
• 14:24
SPEAKER_04: But that really inspired me to be like, hey, let me like go out and do this freaking thing.
• 14:29
SPEAKER_04: And if that stage time isn't gonna be given to you, you gotta get it somewhere.
• 14:34
SPEAKER_04: And listening as many times as I have to the Ralph Hume masterclass that he recorded at the comedy store before he passed, you know, he's like, if you're not getting enough stage time, go and find a room and and make the room good and do shows.
• 14:51
SPEAKER_04: And if a venue doesn't work, move on to another one.
• 14:53
SPEAKER_04: And if it does work, you know, keep bringing people in and then ask for more money.
• 14:57
SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, like make make it make it work.
• 15:00
SPEAKER_01: I was talking to Santiago about it's so I think comics forget about what it was like first entering a doing comedy, first doing it, you know, their first month or whatever.
• 15:15
SPEAKER_01: How yeah, you were nervous and you were afraid to talk to people and you were scared to go up.
• 15:21
SPEAKER_01: And I think after they do comedy a while, it it it just they lose that, and then all of a sudden new people come in, and you'll get some assholes saying, Hey, you know, that guy's not funny, this guy's funny, but you don't remember you were like that.
• 15:38
SPEAKER_01: Nobody starts off uh fantastic.
• 15:44
SPEAKER_01: Yeah and then now you're the guy that's like going, oh, he's not funny, this isn't funny, that's not funny.
• 15:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we roast each other like I told Hector Lara.
• 15:52
SPEAKER_01: Some of his jokes were horrible last night.
• 15:55
  SPEAKER_01: I don't I I don't I don't believe I don't mean that we were just sitting down for two hours after the mic.
• 16:02
SPEAKER_01: Just, you know, they were making fun of me.
• 16:04
SPEAKER_01: I was making that's not what I'm talking about.
• 16:07
SPEAKER_01: I'm talking about clicks that make you feel uncomfortable.
• 16:12
SPEAKER_01: That has got to stop.
• 16:15
SPEAKER_01: That's not how this works.
• 16:17
SPEAKER_01: If you want everybody to succeed, now there are certain people that should never do this people that steal jokes, that do inappropriate shit sexually, that are assholes, that are mean.
• 16:30
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can I could name a bunch of them.
• 16:32
SPEAKER_01: Now, these people, they don't even need to be in what we're doing.
• 16:37
SPEAKER_01: But in the most part, for the most part, if a new person comes into a scene, just introduce yourself because remember how you felt the first time.
• 16:49
  SPEAKER_01: That's it.
• 16:49
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 16:51
SPEAKER_01: It's not that big of a deal.
• 16:53
SPEAKER_01: It's like if you meet a person you've never met before, you're not you don't go up to them and insult them.
• 17:01
SPEAKER_01: You just say, hey, my name's Johnny.
• 17:03
SPEAKER_01: I live over here if you ever need anything, and that's the way I try to do it.
• 17:07
SPEAKER_01: But it does seem to every scene has clicks.
• 17:13
SPEAKER_01: And I don't think that's ever gonna end because they're human beings.
• 17:19
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I and I think too, like for for new people coming in, you know, if you're listening, I've had a couple people reach out that, you know, are under six months that listen to the pod.
• 17:29
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 17:29
SPEAKER_04: You know, one of the things that I did, and I think this is a great way to introduce yourself to people and network with people, is go to people's shows.
• 17:38
SPEAKER_04: Oh and and don't and don't go there like expecting to get thrown on the show.
• 17:44
SPEAKER_04: Like if it happens, like let it happen organically.
• 17:46
SPEAKER_04: Like, don't go there and ask for a spot.
• 17:48
SPEAKER_04: But I used to go to places and I would let them know, like, hey, I'm an I'm an open mic comedian, I saw your flyer, I I just wanted to come out and meet you and support.
• 17:58
  SPEAKER_04: That's all.
• 17:58
SPEAKER_04: Well, here's the I'll be over here.
• 18:01
  SPEAKER_01: I agree with you.
• 18:02
SPEAKER_01: I tell people that all the time.
• 18:04
SPEAKER_01: Don't send people messages to get booked.
• 18:09
SPEAKER_01: One thing I agree with Steve Hernandez, a chatter box, and a lot of stuff I have qualms with the chatter box.
• 18:17
SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna go into it.
• 18:18
  SPEAKER_01: I love Steve.
• 18:19
SPEAKER_01: I've been I'm gonna do the Sunday show again at the end of the month.
• 18:23
SPEAKER_01: He's always given me inspiration.
• 18:26
SPEAKER_01: But one thing I do agree with him: if you can't come down to Covina and showcase in front of him, you shouldn't be doing this.
• 18:34
SPEAKER_01: Don't send a message if you live in Los Angeles and you want to get booked, like say, in fucking Silver Lake, walk your ass over to the venue, introduce yourself, it's gonna go a long way.
• 18:48
SPEAKER_01: But with the advent of social media see, I started before social media, so with the advent of social media, now everybody just I'll send a message.
• 18:56
SPEAKER_01: And no, yeah, you're sending a message, and so are 10,000 other people.
• 19:02
SPEAKER_04: That's true, and and I can say that with first hand experience that there are people that have come out to support my shows, and I'm very appreciative for them, and they're the first people I think of exactly when I'm booking that show again.
• 19:15
SPEAKER_04: And and I have gotten hundreds and hundreds of messages from other comics asking about getting spots, and and I'll be honest, I forget about them.
• 19:24
SPEAKER_04: I try and watch every tape, I try and get back to people and be realistic with people, especially because sometimes they'll come with a budget, like, oh, I'm gonna be, you know,$500 minimum, and I have I need this or that.
• 19:36
SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, dude, like that's not the type of show I'm running here.
• 19:40
SPEAKER_04: Like, you know what I mean?
• 19:41
  SPEAKER_01: $500 minimum.
• 19:43
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I mean, when you book a show, do they know how much you have?
• 19:47
  SPEAKER_01: Okay.
• 19:48
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, most of my videos are like a couple hundred dollars maybe for a budget.
• 19:54
SPEAKER_04: Right, you're not supposed to spread out through everybody.
• 19:57
SPEAKER_04: That's not just for one person.
• 19:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're not booking a theater or Carnegie Hall.
• 20:01
  SPEAKER_01: Don't they understand that?
• 20:03
SPEAKER_01: And if you come with that when you come with when you when you come with that aggression, like I have a$500 minimum, and I don't care if you're the funniest person in the world, that's not really a good way to start a relationship.
• 20:21
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 20:21
SPEAKER_01: I know because I I know because I'm trying to get booked, and I've made headway at the Comedy and Magic in almost.
• 20:29
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 20:30
SPEAKER_01: And I went down, the booker knows me, he goes, hey Johnny, I went down, he goes, Thank you for coming down.
• 20:35
SPEAKER_01: I was in the green room, I was talking to him.
• 20:38
SPEAKER_01: I didn't go, hey man, you know, I deserve to be here, and my minimum is 500.
• 20:45
SPEAKER_01: I would shoot myself, you know, so it's just it doesn't it doesn't bode well for your art.
• 20:52
SPEAKER_01: And when you start off on that template, you're probably not a good artist anyway.
• 20:59
SPEAKER_04: That's just my you know, there's been a lot of debate online, Johnny.
• 21:03
SPEAKER_04: If you could touch on this for a minute, a lot of debate online about bringer shows.
• 21:07
SPEAKER_04: Because recently there was uh some stuff that came out about the prominent, the most prominent Bringer show person out here that uh there was a lot of allegations against him and stuff, and he kind of went off the grid for a little bit.
• 21:20
SPEAKER_04: But uh what are you what are your thoughts on on newer comics doing bringer shows and getting in the door for a seven-minute set at the biggest clubs with filled rooms just because they bring ten people?
• 21:32
SPEAKER_01: Well, the I discussed this on another podcast.
• 21:36
  SPEAKER_01: They're pimps, they're pimps, and I've known pimps.
• 21:41
SPEAKER_01: I grew up in San Francisco in the late 60s, early 70s.
• 21:45
SPEAKER_01: I knew a lot of pimps, and what they do is they prey on young women and turn them out as prostitutes, and that's what bringer shows are.
• 21:56
SPEAKER_01: They see a young person, they say, bring ten people, you'll Perform in front of a thousand people or five hundred of your club.
• 22:04
SPEAKER_01: It's the worst thing for this art.
• 22:08
SPEAKER_01: And I don't understand, but they are preying on people who know nothing.
• 22:13
SPEAKER_01: These people that do these bringer shows know nothing about the art of stand-up comedy or acting.
• 22:18
  SPEAKER_01: They're just yeah, they're prey.
• 22:20
SPEAKER_01: That's the best way I can think.
• 22:22
  SPEAKER_01: Literally prey.
• 22:24
SPEAKER_01: Now, about people being canceled on Instagram, I'm against that.
• 22:28
  SPEAKER_01: I'm against all this.
• 22:30
SPEAKER_01: I mean, if somebody does something, take them to court, take them to real court, not Instagram court.
• 22:35
SPEAKER_01: You don't have to make a video.
• 22:36
SPEAKER_01: Oh, this guy did this or this girl did this.
• 22:40
SPEAKER_01: No, you can go down to the courthouse, file a judgment, and then take him to court.
• 22:47
SPEAKER_01: Because I don't know if that stuff is real.
• 22:50
SPEAKER_01: I don't know what that booker did.
• 22:52
SPEAKER_01: And I met him one time and he was very nice.
• 22:54
  SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
• 22:56
  SPEAKER_01: I don't have any sense.
• 22:57
SPEAKER_04: Well, maybe that's because you're not sexy enough, Johnny.
• 22:59
SPEAKER_04: If you were a little bit more sexy, maybe he wouldn't have been so nice.
• 23:02
SPEAKER_01: I did, I did look pretty good.
• 23:05
SPEAKER_04: Maybe your white pants weren't tight enough for him, Johnny.
• 23:08
  SPEAKER_01: I wasn't wearing white pants then.
• 23:11
SPEAKER_01: Oh, you remember what you were wearing?
• 23:13
  unknown: Ooh.
• 23:14
SPEAKER_01: No, what I'm saying is is that uh I don't believe in cancel culture or woke culture.
• 23:20
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 23:21
SPEAKER_01: I it's just an excuse for people to be out of touch.
• 23:26
  SPEAKER_01: So if you're you're woke and you're I can't say this.
• 23:33
SPEAKER_01: Like you no, I'm the biggest person.
• 23:36
SPEAKER_01: I've been banned from rooms for saying political stuff.
• 23:40
SPEAKER_01: And in the past, and I just took it, I was like, okay, they they they were not on my political affiliation.
• 23:48
  SPEAKER_01: I wasn't sure canceled.
• 23:51
SPEAKER_01: The people that get canceled do something that would if you worked at Target, you would be arrested.
• 23:58
SPEAKER_01: So you know, that as far as the bringer shows, it's just okay.
• 24:04
SPEAKER_01: Say you do bringer shows for like five years, right?
• 24:08
SPEAKER_01: You're constantly doing them, then you get away from bringer shows and you do real shows, you're gonna be a horrible comic for one thing.
• 24:16
SPEAKER_01: You're gonna have to start all over because you've been people that you brought are laughing because you brought them there.
• 24:24
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I also feel like too, and I'd love for you to speak on this because I think we're I think we got maybe like five minutes left, but okay, um, when you're when you're in front of a club that's full, it's so much different than being in front of a bar show with 20 people, some of which aren't listening.
• 24:41
  SPEAKER_04: Right.
• 24:41
SPEAKER_04: Like I really felt like I've been able to like cut my teeth and and get to where I'm at right now because I've done so many shows where you're having to like win people in the audience and you're having to battle pool tables and pinball machines and jukeboxes, and you know, when I when I go to clubs and and I s and I and I'm in front of, you know, 400 people at a club that's there to laugh, that bought a ticket, that's sitting there to laugh, and that it's exciting and they're there on date night or whatever.
• 25:10
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 25:11
  SPEAKER_04: It's it's I feel like it's so much easier.
• 25:13
SPEAKER_04: Like you're set up for success in that way.
• 25:16
  SPEAKER_00: Of course.
• 25:18
  SPEAKER_00: Hello.
• 25:20
  SPEAKER_04: Are difficult first.
• 25:22
SPEAKER_01: I mean, look, when you're not well known, you're gonna perform with pool tables and TVs and people turning the other way and not listening and yelling and heckling.
• 25:34
SPEAKER_01: What I did want to talk about, I wanted to support you because I listened to that podcast about the guy who heckled you.
• 25:41
  SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah.
• 25:42
SPEAKER_01: No, I'm not I'm not gonna I'm not gonna I'm not gonna bring the part that you did.
• 25:46
SPEAKER_01: This is one down this is one thing that I don't like about comics.
• 25:54
SPEAKER_01: They're sitting in the back, and then after you get off, they're like, you should have done this, this, and this.
• 26:00
SPEAKER_01: You know, woulda, coulda, shoulda, man.
• 26:03
  SPEAKER_01: No.
• 26:03
SPEAKER_01: You support your artist, you ran into a psycho, but you don't tell the guy you should have done this because they weren't on stage when it was happening.
• 26:12
SPEAKER_01: It's easy for me to say, you know, if I saw a guy, you know, get hit by a car, and I'm like, well, he shouldn't have run across the highway.
• 26:22
SPEAKER_01: Well, you motherfucker have run across the highway before and you didn't know what to do.
• 26:27
SPEAKER_01: What I'm saying is you were in it, and other comics should just shut the fuck up and go, hey, you know what?
• 26:34
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know what I would have done.
• 26:36
  SPEAKER_01: That's the honest response.
• 26:37
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know what I would have done.
• 26:38
  SPEAKER_01: Me personally, I don't know.
• 26:41
  SPEAKER_01: I mean, who knows?
• 26:43
SPEAKER_01: So don't take that personally and fuck that guy, and as long as you get to keep the venue and do another show, you'll be fine.
• 26:51
SPEAKER_04: You know, I I I did, and I feel like part of that was because of the way that I handled it.
• 26:56
  SPEAKER_04: You know, I didn't handle it.
• 26:58
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the funniest thing is when you said the lady crazy manner.
• 27:01
SPEAKER_01: The funniest thing is when you said the funniest thing is when you said the lady was crying.
• 27:06
  SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
• 27:07
  SPEAKER_04: That was insane.
• 27:09
SPEAKER_04: I was like, you know what?
• 27:10
SPEAKER_04: You're not getting sympathy from us because they were in an in an adulterous relationship, and it wasn't my fault that her boyfriend's coming to tell me that she's the mistress.
• 27:20
  SPEAKER_04: That's not my fault.
• 27:21
  SPEAKER_01: But wait a minute.
• 27:22
SPEAKER_01: What so she was literally like crying, crying?
• 27:26
SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, no, she was actually like wiping tears.
• 27:29
SPEAKER_04: So she was with a group of friends and her boyfriend, and I guess her group of friends didn't know that she was dating a married man.
• 27:39
SPEAKER_01: See, you wouldn't have to deal with this shit if you were at the improv.
• 27:43
SPEAKER_01: They would have to I because I know I knew one of the bookers' bouncers there.
• 27:47
SPEAKER_01: One time I was there because I was dating a friend of his, and he goes, Come on down, I'll get you in and we'll talk.
• 27:55
SPEAKER_01: Some guy picked up his phone and started videotaping Joe Rogan.
• 28:00
SPEAKER_01: This guy took him by the neck and dragged him out and threw him out the emergency door.
• 28:06
SPEAKER_01: See, we don't get that.
• 28:08
  SPEAKER_01: We don't get that.
• 28:08
SPEAKER_01: We're at a restaurant, you know, we gotta deal with these psychopaths that, you know, they think they can say anything.
• 28:16
SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, regardless of what happened at that venue, that shit's gonna happen at boondocks, at all these places that we do, because it's not a controlled environment.
• 28:29
SPEAKER_01: It doesn't happen like when you get more notoriety, and let's say you're touring and you're at the you know, uh uh uh whatever these clubs are across the nation, that's never gonna happen.
• 28:41
  SPEAKER_01: Don't worry about it.
• 28:43
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 28:44
  SPEAKER_04: Well, you know what?
• 28:45
SPEAKER_04: Here's here's my uh the my last thought on it is that the venue was amazing.
• 28:50
SPEAKER_04: That was the biggest show that I've ever I've ever held.
• 28:53
SPEAKER_04: We had almost 90 people there.
• 28:54
SPEAKER_04: The venue wants us back and is gonna continue to support us to get that amount of people.
• 28:59
SPEAKER_04: And this next one is gonna be a paid ticketed event.
• 29:02
SPEAKER_04: See, that's where when you buy a ticket, you get a beer as well.
• 29:06
SPEAKER_01: See, that's the main thing.
• 29:07
SPEAKER_01: You want to keep the gig, you want to move forward.
• 29:10
SPEAKER_01: And is it a learning experience?
• 29:12
SPEAKER_01: I don't think it is because nobody should have to go through that stupid shit.
• 29:16
SPEAKER_04: When some days, yeah, but that stuff does happen, and I I definitely felt like I learned stuff from it, even though, yeah, we could say it shouldn't have happened, but it did.
• 29:26
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 29:27
SPEAKER_04: So but Johnny, freaking thank you so much, man.
• 29:32
SPEAKER_04: I mean, this has been really cool.
• 29:33
SPEAKER_04: It's always great to talk with you about comedy and your and your insights on certain things.
• 29:39
  SPEAKER_04: Thanks.
• 29:39
SPEAKER_04: Uh definitely shout shout out your Instagram.
• 29:42
  SPEAKER_04: What's your Instagram?
• 29:42
  SPEAKER_04: What's your at, Johnny?
• 29:43
SPEAKER_01: It's the gayest Instagram on the planet, Johnny Gold7.
• 29:47
  SPEAKER_01: Johnny Gold777.
• 29:51
SPEAKER_04: Johnny Gold, I've never seen you at a slot machine a day in your life.
• 29:55
SPEAKER_04: Why do you have okay?
• 29:57
SPEAKER_04: Why do you have 777 on it?
• 29:59
SPEAKER_04: You're just lucky or what?
• 30:01
  SPEAKER_01: I don't know why.
• 30:02
SPEAKER_01: It's I think because when I was making my Instagram, I thought it was the stupidest thing in the world.
• 30:07
SPEAKER_01: Let me let me do we have like another couple minutes to talk about something?
• 30:11
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we can do a couple minutes, bad.
• 30:13
SPEAKER_01: This is another thing I wanted to talk about the podcast I was thinking about.
• 30:17
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 30:17
SPEAKER_01: One thing I hate, especially about Instagram.
• 30:20
  SPEAKER_01: I don't go on Facebook.
• 30:21
SPEAKER_01: I know I'm old, but Facebook is just it's just not really appealing anymore.
• 30:27
SPEAKER_01: I wish comics would stop flexing so much with these pictures and the people that they meet and the famous people they meet and really concentrate on working on their craft.
• 30:42
SPEAKER_01: It's just, it bothers me.
• 30:44
SPEAKER_01: Hey, I'm with Mark Norman or hey, I'm with Tracy Morgan.
• 30:47
SPEAKER_01: I'm hey, I get it, you took a picture with the motherfucker, but you know, concentrate on your act.
• 30:54
SPEAKER_01: I don't need to see that bullshit all the time, and I don't give a fuck.
• 30:59
SPEAKER_01: I care about you as an artist to see if you're getting better.
• 31:03
SPEAKER_01: That's you know, clips are fine, videos are fine.
• 31:07
SPEAKER_01: Making fun of Tiger Woods when he got his DUI.
• 31:09
  SPEAKER_01: That's cool.
• 31:10
SPEAKER_01: I love the videos, but you with these 20 or 30 pictures, look at me, look at me.
• 31:16
SPEAKER_01: This is the downside of comedy and the downside of social media if we don't get our shit together.
• 31:22
SPEAKER_01: How about you go hit some stages and work on your live act?
• 31:26
  SPEAKER_01: I don't care about your pictures.
• 31:29
  SPEAKER_01: That's what I wanted to say.
• 31:30
SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, there's a person that had recently written about this big article about how comics actual material is suffering because of all the hats that you have to wear.
• 31:45
SPEAKER_04: Like it's people hosting their own shows, producing their own shows, marketing their own shows, booking their own shows, needing to write material, needing to go do open mics, needing to perform, and also uploading reels, uploading pictures, uploading stories, doing lives, doing TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook, and soon to be MySpace.
• 32:08
SPEAKER_04: And then the goal is to get enough followers on those platforms so that you can get a punch up, so that your punch up will go to people in that area and they will push for you.
• 32:18
SPEAKER_04: There's so many different things that you have to do, and unless you have a team of people assisting you, then you literally have no time.
• 32:26
SPEAKER_04: I don't even do all of those things, and I feel like I have no time.
• 32:30
SPEAKER_01: When you when you just went through that rant about all those different things, I almost fell, I was just like, God, that's just that's just a waste of time.
• 32:38
SPEAKER_01: Listen, I know you gotta get I know you, I know you gotta get fans, and I know you have to put up content and reels and this and that, but uh you know, these pictures, I get it.
• 32:49
SPEAKER_01: If the pictures are cool and somebody takes them of you, that's fine, because I know it's very popular now to see all these pictures, and that's fine, but I don't want any part of it.
• 33:02
SPEAKER_01: I just I just don't like to I like to shave my ego down so uh where it's almost dissipated into nothing.
• 33:10
SPEAKER_01: So I can go I can go on stage and just be me and not worry about all this other shit.
• 33:16
SPEAKER_01: But maybe that's my problem.
• 33:19
SPEAKER_01: Maybe that's my problem too.
• 33:21
SPEAKER_04: The the chatterbox pictures specifically, dude, those you can look back in 10 years at those pictures, and you're gonna be like, wow, look at where some of these people are now.
• 33:32
  SPEAKER_04: You know?
• 33:32
SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be honest with you, Dave.
• 33:34
  SPEAKER_01: I I'm just not like that.
• 33:35
SPEAKER_01: I you know, I like personal touch.
• 33:37
SPEAKER_04: I came up talking about it You're not the nostalgic, you're not nostalgic, Johnny?
• 33:41
  SPEAKER_01: No, I am.
• 33:42
SPEAKER_01: I I listen, uh the friendships I've made in comedy and the people that I've loved in comedy and the women I've dated, comics that I've dated, and people I've met will always be close to my heart.
• 33:53
SPEAKER_01: And sometimes I think about it when I'm walking.
• 33:54
SPEAKER_01: I got to meet so many great people.
• 33:57
SPEAKER_01: I'm sure the pictures are nice.
• 33:59
  SPEAKER_01: I get it.
• 34:00
SPEAKER_01: I get the pictures, but I would rather talk to the person and feel what they're feeling, and that's how I do my comedy.
• 34:08
  SPEAKER_01: My I, you know, it it's it's about connection, it's about that's why I like acting versus stand-up.
• 34:15
SPEAKER_01: I use my acting tools in stand-up because it's not necessarily what most people do, so I kind of separate myself, and that's what I do.
• 34:25
SPEAKER_01: But if somebody wants to take pictures and you know, do whatever, I don't care.
• 34:30
SPEAKER_01: It's just not my cup of tea.
• 34:32
SPEAKER_01: And since we're on a podcast, I thought I'd bring it up because I was basically because I was basically being positive in this podcast.
• 34:40
SPEAKER_01: You are being positive, the most positive I've heard you be, Johnny.
• 34:44
SPEAKER_04: But look, man, we're gonna have to wrap it up.
• 34:46
SPEAKER_04: But Johnny, thank you so much.
• 34:48
  SPEAKER_04: No problem.
• 34:48
  SPEAKER_01: I love your podcast.
• 34:49
SPEAKER_01: Listen to the Carmedy Podcast, it's one of the good ones because you're consistent.
• 34:54
SPEAKER_01: I like consistency in podcasts, you know.
• 34:57
  SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
• 34:58
  SPEAKER_04: Because I don't want to.
• 34:59
SPEAKER_04: This is technically the 31st episode because I try and do a 30-minute and a 15-minute each each week.
• 35:08
SPEAKER_04: And uh, I really appreciate you, Johnny.
• 35:11
SPEAKER_04: Appreciate you being in the scene and you bringing your your insights and your unique players to the scene.
• 35:16
  SPEAKER_02: I'll see you Saturday.
• 35:18
SPEAKER_02: I guess is that the show you're doing Saturday?
• 35:20
SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes, the Heat Wave show on Saturday.
• 35:23
SPEAKER_04: Less than 20 tickets available if anybody's listening and wants to get tickets.
• 35:28
SPEAKER_04: We're already over half sold.
• 35:29
SPEAKER_01: I mean, guys, go to go to the show.
• 35:31
  SPEAKER_01: It's a great show, it's a great venue, it's outdoor.
• 35:34
SPEAKER_01: They have food, they got drinks, and the guy, Joe Morgan, is and his lovely wife.
• 35:39
  SPEAKER_01: They're real comedy fans.
• 35:42
SPEAKER_01: You guys show up at the show this Saturday.
• 35:45
SPEAKER_04: Show up at the show this Saturday.
• 35:47
SPEAKER_04: Shout out the Grandma's House podcast with the one and only Santiago and Johnny that you just heard here.
• 35:54
  SPEAKER_04: Check him out.
• 35:54
  SPEAKER_04: Johnny Gold777 on Instagram.
• 35:57
SPEAKER_04: Everybody, that was episode number 16.
• 36:00
SPEAKER_04: So thank you so much.
• 36:00
SPEAKER_04: And Johnny, you can press that stop button and close us out.
• 36:04
  SPEAKER_00: Got it.
