- 0:17Speaker 1: Happy Friday, everybody. Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Hopefully you're not feeling it today.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Hopefully you're not hungover today.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Although we would understand and your boss would probably understand
- 0:34Speaker 2: because A celebratory atmosphere at Rice Eccles Stadium last night,
- 0:39Speaker 2: not only because of the return of Utah football, but
- 0:43Speaker 2: because of a monster performance, an expected monster performance, to
- 0:48Speaker 2: be fair, to be honest, but a monster performance by
- 0:53Speaker 2: the Utes in their first game of the season last night. 66-14,
- 1:00Speaker 2: Utah demolishes the Vandals of Idaho. And that's what we
- 1:06Speaker 2: hoped for. That's what we expected. Devin Dampier, 13 of 18,
- 1:12Speaker 2: 176 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, almost 10 yards per completion.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Bird Ficklin, 50% completions, but 93 yards, 11.6 yards per completion.
- 1:25Speaker 1: He also had two tutties.
- 1:29Speaker 2: LaMarcus Bell put one drive together, seven carries for 87 yards.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Kids got speed. Bright future in that running back room.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Huge night for the run game. 364 yards on the
- 1:44Speaker 2: ground for Utah football. I was actually a little bummed
- 1:49Speaker 2: out to see them not hold Idaho to fewer than
- 1:52Speaker 2: 100 yards rushing. We have questions still. We have things
- 1:56Speaker 2: to talk about. Plenty to discuss on the program today.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And we will be focusing heavily on Utah football for
- 2:04Speaker 2: the very obvious reasons.
- 2:06Speaker 1: Colorado also got a big win last night. So, all right. Dion,
- 2:10Speaker 1: all right, Buffs. Snagged one for the Big 12 Conference.
- 2:15Speaker 2: By defeating Georgia Tech on a field goal block as
- 2:19Speaker 2: time expired.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Thrilling and exciting.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I mean, that's, to be fair to everyone involved, that's
- 2:26Speaker 2: a heck of a lot more climactic finish than than
- 2:31Speaker 2: what we saw from this Utah, Idaho game. 8 7
- 2:34Speaker 2: 7 3 5 3 0 700.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I always love to hear from you. I already put
- 2:40Speaker 1: it out on Twitter. I want it on the text
- 2:42Speaker 1: line as well.
- 2:43Speaker 2: The best thing you saw from the game last night,
- 2:46Speaker 2: also throw in the worst thing you saw from the
- 2:48Speaker 2: game last night, because like you want from most week
- 2:52Speaker 2: one match-ups against a, an FCS team or against, you know,
- 2:57Speaker 2: even a group of six team in these pay games,
- 3:02Speaker 2: these gimme wins, you want to come away with a
- 3:06Speaker 2: boost in your confidence. You want to come away healthy,
- 3:09Speaker 2: which it looks like Utah did. You want to come
- 3:11Speaker 2: away with some awareness of what needs to be worked on.
- 3:15Speaker 2: And I promise you this Utah coaching staff is grinding
- 3:19Speaker 2: the tape and saying, okay, this is where we need
- 3:21Speaker 2: to get better before Arkansas rolls into town because Arkansas's
- 3:25Speaker 2: personnel is significantly different than Idaho's personnel and all respect
- 3:30Speaker 2: to the vandals. You got to give those guys credit.
- 3:32Speaker 2: They knew what they were in for. And, you know,
- 3:35Speaker 2: two or three of those guys showed up really ready
- 3:38Speaker 2: to play.
- 3:39Speaker 1: That's not fair.
- 3:40Speaker 2: More than two or three of them. Hayden Kinchelow got
- 3:42Speaker 2: me nervous for a second. The former walk-on Vandal running
- 3:46Speaker 2: back who just got put on scholarship this year, his
- 3:49Speaker 2: fifth year of college football, by the way. So he's
- 3:52Speaker 2: like one of those guys that you have to give
- 3:54Speaker 2: him a scholarship. He's been grinding away for five years.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Hayden Kinchelow.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Seven carries, 37 yards. He was breaking tackles. He was
- 4:03Speaker 2: running through contact. Five yards a carry. You don't want
- 4:07Speaker 2: to see an Idaho Vandal go for five yards a carry,
- 4:09Speaker 2: but give that guy credit. Good job by him. He
- 4:12Speaker 2: was absolutely amped. Josh Wood, their quarterback, is a dynamic athlete.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Goodness gracious, he had an abysmal night passing the football.
- 4:21Speaker 2: A couple of drops, so his teammates are partially responsible
- 4:24Speaker 2: for this, but nine of 27 for 111 yards. And again,
- 4:30Speaker 2: plenty to digest. I've only watched it the one time.
- 4:34Speaker 2: I will do a rewatch probably tonight or at some
- 4:38Speaker 2: point during the weekend, although it is a packed slate
- 4:41Speaker 2: of college football. Last night, tonight, Saturday, full slate, obviously,
- 4:46Speaker 2: even Sunday and Monday games.
- 4:48Speaker 1: So if you have plans.
- 4:50Speaker 2: If you want to take your wife on a date,
- 4:52Speaker 2: if you're looking for, or your husband on a date,
- 4:54Speaker 2: don't want to be sexist.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I know we have at least a woman listening to
- 4:56Speaker 1: the program.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Tuesday is the day we got football in what 11
- 5:03Speaker 2: of the next 12 days. And I think Tuesday is
- 5:06Speaker 2: the only one where we're safe, where we're free and
- 5:09Speaker 2: clear Wednesday. You've got Australia game. No Wednesday. You have
- 5:15Speaker 2: the non-Australia game Thursday. You have the Australia game. It's
- 5:19Speaker 2: a Seahawks Patriots kicking off the NFL season on a Wednesday,
- 5:23Speaker 2: which is weird, but.
- 5:25Speaker 1: And you can hear it here.
- 5:27Speaker 2: You can't hear it right here on ESPN, 792 on FM.
- 5:32Speaker 2: We're off and running people. It's so nice to not
- 5:35Speaker 2: have to talk about the speculation and the lawsuits and
- 5:38Speaker 2: the projections and the, Hey, what's, is it going to
- 5:41Speaker 2: be over this number? Is it going to be under
- 5:42Speaker 2: this number? Who's going to be the breakout star by
- 5:44Speaker 2: the way? I don't know what is wrong with me.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Like the highest percentage move when you're talking about Utah
- 5:52Speaker 2: football and you want to name a breakout star is
- 5:57Speaker 2: to go with the name you're familiar with.
- 6:02Speaker 1: A last name you're familiar with.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Nobody, none of us yesterday when I was asking for
- 6:07Speaker 2: breakout stars, we didn't get a tweet about it.
- 6:09Speaker 1: We didn't get a text about it.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Nobody put Elijah Ellis as the breakout star of this season.
- 6:15Speaker 2: And then we saw Elijah Ellis early and often and
- 6:19Speaker 2: throughout this game for Utah football. They're clearly going to
- 6:22Speaker 2: try to get the most they can out of number 83.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So, man, you have an embarrassment of riches.
- 6:29Speaker 2: You have plenty of options when it comes to, hey,
- 6:31Speaker 2: who's going to be that guy for this Utah football team?
- 6:34Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Tell me how you're feeling.
- 6:42Speaker 2: What was the best part of the game last night?
- 6:44Speaker 2: What was the part of the game last night that
- 6:47Speaker 2: left you feeling a little uneasy or questioning or wondering
- 6:50Speaker 2: the worst part of the game last night for you?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Mike from nine, four, three, seven says great performance in
- 6:58Speaker 2: the first game.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Only one penalty.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Morgan looks like he belongs on the youth side. Of course,
- 7:03Speaker 2: Morgan looks like he belongs on the youth sideline. He's
- 7:06Speaker 2: been on the youth sideline his whole life.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And yeah, he looked composed. He looks comfortable.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Look, part of it is the matchup, but Morgan and
- 7:17Speaker 2: his staff were very prepared and they felt like they
- 7:19Speaker 2: had this team very prepared. The moment was never going
- 7:23Speaker 2: to be too big for Morgan Scali whenever that call came.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And obviously it came in the bowl game last year,
- 7:29Speaker 2: whenever that call came, Hey, the keys to the kingdom
- 7:32Speaker 2: are now yours. The moment was not going to be
- 7:35Speaker 2: too big for Morgan. He has mentally prepared himself mentally.
- 7:38Speaker 2: He has spiritually prepared himself. He has tactically prepared himself
- 7:44Speaker 2: for exactly this for years and years and years. 877-353-0700,
- 7:52Speaker 2: best and worst part of the game for you. Last
- 7:55Speaker 2: night as Utah opened their season with a monster, monster
- 8:01Speaker 2: 66-14 performance over the Idaho Vandals who fall to 0-2
- 8:04Speaker 2: and were coming into Rice Eccles' On a short week.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Morgan says way. Sean looks like a dog. Thought we'd
- 8:13Speaker 2: see Larry Simmons run with the one some more. I'm
- 8:17Speaker 2: not panicking or worrying about who's out there and who's
- 8:21Speaker 2: not out there too much. Given this game, because if
- 8:26Speaker 2: you didn't see a guy enough, part of it, it
- 8:30Speaker 2: could be, you know, we have no idea how many
- 8:33Speaker 2: guys missed a certain number of practices with health issues.
- 8:40Speaker 2: if you missed several practices, these coaches were going to
- 8:44Speaker 2: end up playing you later in this game. And maybe
- 8:47Speaker 2: that's what happened with Larry Simmons. I'm not a hundred
- 8:49Speaker 2: percent sure on that, but that's the way I look
- 8:50Speaker 2: at some of those things. Also, we knew we were
- 8:53Speaker 2: going to see everybody at some point in this game
- 8:56Speaker 2: and the coaches did too. So I don't think their
- 8:58Speaker 2: substitution patterns in this one are necessarily going to be
- 9:03Speaker 2: indicative of what we see for the rest of the
- 9:05Speaker 2: year and We all want to see more of Larry Simmons.
- 9:08Speaker 2: We all want to see more of Braden Pagan.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I'll tell you that. Goodness gracious.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Four catches, 81 yards, 20 yards per catch. Simmons did
- 9:17Speaker 2: have 20 yards per catch also, but he only had
- 9:19Speaker 2: a couple of grabs. Five total touchdown receptions. Two of
- 9:23Speaker 2: those belong to Way Sean Parker. Noah Benny got one
- 9:27Speaker 2: on the throwback. Left-hander against the grain, moving the wrong way. Wide, wide,
- 9:33Speaker 2: wide open on a short yardage down.
- 9:37Speaker 4: And Pagan also had the rushing touchdown on the creative
- 9:42Speaker 4: end around, which was, like.
- 9:44Speaker 1: He was electric, OC.
- 9:48Speaker 4: I would hope that he's going to get, as the
- 9:51Speaker 4: season progresses, he would get more than four catches, as
- 9:55Speaker 4: electric as he was. But the game didn't call for
- 9:58Speaker 4: that against Idaho. So it called for spreading things around a.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Little bit more. Speaker 0 7, 0 7, 1.
- 10:02Speaker 2: If there's a problem to be found in a game
- 10:04Speaker 2: like this one, it is a very good problem to
- 10:06Speaker 2: be found, but.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Look at all the guys that got touches. Okay.
- 10:13Speaker 2: In the run game, LaMarcus bell had seven carries for
- 10:16Speaker 2: 87 yards. Weigh Sean, 12 carries He's at 5.9 yards
- 10:21Speaker 2: per carry in this game. I want to see way
- 10:24Speaker 2: Sean maintain that throughout the season. Easier said than done, obviously,
- 10:29Speaker 2: but you gave multiple carries to your third string, fourth string.
- 10:33Speaker 1: He's your fourth string running back. LaMarcus Bell's your fourth
- 10:35Speaker 1: string running back, right? And he had an explosive drive
- 10:39Speaker 1: and he earned probably more opportunities. Good for him.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Way.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Sean Parker looked awesome. Bird Ficklin, eight carries for 70 yards.
- 10:46Speaker 1: He looked awesome.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Steve Chavez Soto looked kid's got some talent, some grit.
- 10:51Speaker 2: That's a guy you're going to see a lot more of.
- 10:54Speaker 2: He is this year's the Kerry Rogers potentially for this
- 10:57Speaker 2: Utah football team, Devin damn peer. I wanted to see
- 11:01Speaker 2: him hit less in this game than he was. Devin
- 11:04Speaker 2: was clearly like so enthusiastic and excited about being out
- 11:08Speaker 2: there and healthy again, that I think he didn't protect
- 11:11Speaker 2: himself enough from the contact. He's okay with it. Maybe
- 11:17Speaker 2: the coaching staff's okay with it. I was like, but
- 11:21Speaker 2: that's because I'm hypersensitive to it. Devin Dampier had six carries.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Matiaki Helu, who got a lot of shout outs during
- 11:30Speaker 2: camp as a guy who forced himself into the conversation,
- 11:34Speaker 2: looked like exactly what he is, a very talented young
- 11:37Speaker 2: running back who was was kind of getting his first
- 11:40Speaker 2: real game action. Hunter Andrews only got one carry. We're
- 11:43Speaker 2: going to see Hunter Andrews this season, get multiple carries
- 11:47Speaker 2: in multiple games. Daniel Bray had a couple of carries.
- 11:51Speaker 2: As you mentioned, James Pagan got involved in the run game.
- 11:53Speaker 2: Brandon Rose carried the ball for a couple of times
- 11:58Speaker 2: in a game against Idaho. You're able to have 10
- 12:02Speaker 2: different dudes carrying the ball in a normal game.
- 12:05Speaker 1: This list goes down to four or five.
- 12:09Speaker 2: So we're not able to fully project what the offense
- 12:14Speaker 2: does against Idaho onto Arkansas or even onto Utah state
- 12:18Speaker 2: and probably not onto Kansas and Iowa state and definitely
- 12:20Speaker 2: not onto a BYU game plan. I don't think, but
- 12:24Speaker 2: this is what you wanted to see as a Utah
- 12:26Speaker 2: fan in game one, most of the time, not all
- 12:30Speaker 2: the time, most of the time you made it look
- 12:32Speaker 2: pretty easy to Against an Idaho team that, look, they're
- 12:35Speaker 2: well coached.
- 12:36Speaker 1: They have some talent. They were overmatched physically.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And it was always going to be the case that
- 12:41Speaker 2: Utah ran away with this game. The passing game, the
- 12:46Speaker 2: throw game, you probably don't want to call it that anymore.
- 12:48Speaker 2: A lot of reason for optimism there. A lot of
- 12:53Speaker 2: reason for happiness and excitement surrounding this group of wide receivers.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Still wonder what the tight ends are going to look
- 13:03Speaker 2: like in this offense. I'm still a skeptic on that.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Not a skeptic, but just a curious wait-and-see type observer
- 13:13Speaker 2: on that. Dev's arm, Dev's accuracy, Dev's presence in the
- 13:20Speaker 2: pocket looked great. If we're being fully nitpicky and critical
- 13:25Speaker 2: and honest, a couple of those deeper balls, we saw
- 13:29Speaker 2: those kind of like die out, flutter a little bit.
- 13:32Speaker 2: You want to get rid of that. When bird Ficklin's
- 13:35Speaker 2: in that, what you need is the perfect balance, right?
- 13:38Speaker 2: Bird a couple of times, just completely rifled it when
- 13:43Speaker 2: it maybe needs to be a little bit more of
- 13:45Speaker 2: a touch pass. A couple of those in the red zone.
- 13:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Bird's arm is live, live, live. Like bird can rip
- 13:53Speaker 2: the ball. You don't have to on every throw. And
- 13:58Speaker 2: I think you saw some frustration from him because a
- 14:03Speaker 2: couple of those passes he would like to have back
- 14:05Speaker 2: because he was throwing them too hard. And he probably
- 14:08Speaker 2: knows that, and it's probably like an excitement thing. And
- 14:11Speaker 2: he is not in a position where he gets to
- 14:14Speaker 2: settle into a rhythm passing-wise like Devin does.
- 14:17Speaker 1: That's got to be frustrating for a quarterback. Like, birds.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Mental game is going to develop so much this year
- 14:24Speaker 2: because he has to play quarterback in a situation that
- 14:29Speaker 2: very few other people around the country. He might be
- 14:31Speaker 2: the only guy in the country that is used this way.
- 14:37Speaker 1: By a major team this year. right?
- 14:40Speaker 2: It's a weird scenario where they're going to like, they're
- 14:43Speaker 2: not going to say, Hey, next quarter bird, you're going in.
- 14:46Speaker 2: They might not even say, Hey, next series bird, you're
- 14:48Speaker 2: going in. It's going to be like, Oh, we got
- 14:50Speaker 2: a second and long bird.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Get in there.
- 14:52Speaker 2: We're going to do this two quarterback thing or bird.
- 14:55Speaker 2: You're in there instead of Devin and you better.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Be warm and ready to go.
- 14:59Speaker 2: And you better have your, you know, timing and everything
- 15:02Speaker 2: dialed in and your rhythm dialed in.
- 15:04Speaker 1: That's hard. Because he's also playing running back.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Did you see how many times he lined up in
- 15:09Speaker 2: the backfield as a running back, right? Like bird is
- 15:12Speaker 2: going to be one of the more unique weapons and
- 15:15Speaker 2: talents in the land. And he's going to have to
- 15:17Speaker 2: adjust to that. And we saw some of those growing
- 15:20Speaker 2: pains from a brand new offense and some curious roles
- 15:24Speaker 2: within that offense last night. But man, you got to
- 15:29Speaker 2: feel good as a Utah fan that it went how
- 15:33Speaker 2: it was supposed to go.
- 15:36Speaker 1: You pushed around the team in front of you.
- 15:38Speaker 2: I wanted to see a little bit more from the
- 15:41Speaker 2: first string offensive line. I wanted to see a little
- 15:44Speaker 2: bit more from the offensive line in general. I wanted
- 15:47Speaker 2: to see more from the base defensive front. I wanted
- 15:52Speaker 2: to see more sacks in this game. Idaho was playing
- 15:56Speaker 2: from behind literally the whole game. They threw the ball
- 15:59Speaker 2: more than they wanted to. Utah came away with one sack.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Should have been two.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Nate Tillman missed one that was man. And what, how
- 16:10Speaker 4: devastating was that too? He ends up, ends up being
- 16:12Speaker 4: what a 30, 40.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Yards, like a 44 yard gain.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Leads to the first touchdown of the game. Maybe ends
- 16:20Speaker 4: up being a shout out. If you don't have that,
- 16:21Speaker 4: I know they did score later, but yeah, that, that
- 16:25Speaker 4: would have been a great sack and ended up being
- 16:27Speaker 4: a terrible.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yards allowed defensive play. So 8 7 7.
- 16:34Speaker 2: 3 5 3 0 700 best and worst part of
- 16:39Speaker 2: the game. We have Michael's coming in hot. He's saying you're,
- 16:43Speaker 2: you're capping for, for Devin accuracy and arm strength is weak.
- 16:48Speaker 2: We can have a conversation about the deep ball arm strength.
- 16:51Speaker 2: The accuracy was not a problem last night. Intermediate throws,
- 16:54Speaker 2: short throws. Devin was good accuracy wise. He was incredibly
- 16:58Speaker 2: efficient and the deep throws, like I said, fluttered a
- 17:02Speaker 2: little bit. Players having to come back to the ball.
- 17:05Speaker 4: You had that one in the first half that the
- 17:07Speaker 4: whole stadium thought should have been pass interference with Braden Pagan.
- 17:14Speaker 4: He beat his man, but Devin didn't quite lead him,
- 17:20Speaker 4: so he had to come back. borderline pass interference. Didn't
- 17:24Speaker 4: get called that. That's one of the classic ones where
- 17:27Speaker 4: you're like, ah, you would have liked to see Devin
- 17:29Speaker 4: put a little bit more on.
- 17:30Speaker 1: That for sure.
- 17:31Speaker 2: And you know what the, I don't want the onus
- 17:34Speaker 2: handed to the referees ever. The referees were abysmally.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Bad last night.
- 17:38Speaker 4: I actually have, if you want to play the funniest
- 17:42Speaker 4: part of the game, I have the recording of the
- 17:46Speaker 4: muffed punt.
- 17:47Speaker 1: That wasn't a muffed punt.
- 17:49Speaker 4: .
- 17:51Speaker 2: .
- 17:55Speaker 4: .
- 18:10Speaker 2: .
- 18:14Speaker 1: .
- 18:16Speaker 2: He did the referees bailed, bailed Utah out on this one.
- 18:21Speaker 2: And we, you never got a real explanation as to
- 18:25Speaker 2: what the illegal touching penalty even was or who it
- 18:27Speaker 2: was supposed to be on.
- 18:29Speaker 1: It was very odd. And I, I do want to
- 18:32Speaker 1: hear the actual official Utah broadcast evaluation of this. Go ahead, James.
- 18:37Speaker 7: Kick, it's away. This is a good kick, too. It
- 18:39Speaker 7: backs Carvalho up. He's going to back up. Goes through
- 18:42Speaker 7: his hands. He's going to have to try to get there,
- 18:44Speaker 7: and he won't. That's going to be Idaho football. Idaho
- 18:47Speaker 7: falls on it at the Utah 32-yard line, and that's
- 18:51Speaker 7: going to be Vandal football after Carvalho made a mistake.
- 18:54Speaker 7: He should not have tried to catch that ball that
- 18:56Speaker 7: was over his head.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Let's see how they unsword it here. They do, and
- 18:59Speaker 1: that's turnover on Utah.
- 19:00Speaker 6: No!
- 19:01Speaker 5: No!
- 19:01Speaker 1: Now they're pointing toward the way. No, they're going to
- 19:04Speaker 1: talk about this. That's Idaho football. That's Idaho football.
- 19:06Speaker 7: One official pointed the direction that it was Utah football
- 19:09Speaker 7: in the first down.
- 19:10Speaker 1: On the field, the ball was illegally touched by the
- 19:13Speaker 1: kicking team. First down, Utah.
- 19:15Speaker 8: Wow.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Illegally touched. Okay.
- 19:18Speaker 7: I have to think Idaho thinks the exact same thing
- 19:20Speaker 7: that we do, that that ball might have touched the
- 19:23Speaker 7: fingertips of Monte Carvalho.
- 19:24Speaker 1: He tried, but there's often times where that happens and
- 19:27Speaker 1: it goes through his hands. But the way that he
- 19:28Speaker 1: reacted is as if it did touch his fingertips. So
- 19:31Speaker 1: hopefully we can get a snap off.
- 19:32Speaker 7: Ruling on the field, the ball was illegally touched by
- 19:34Speaker 7: the kicking team.
- 19:35Speaker 1: The previous play is under replay review. Here's the referee.
- 19:38Speaker 1: After review, the ruling on.
- 19:39Speaker 7: The field of the illegal touching is upheld.
- 19:42Speaker 8: First down, Idaho.
- 19:44Speaker 1: What? Overturned or upheld?
- 19:48Speaker 5: Upheld.
- 19:48Speaker 1: If it was upheld, it would be Utah football. Hey,
- 19:51Speaker 1: it's a first game, too, for the referees.
- 19:54Speaker 7: So we'll cut Mike McCabe a little slack right here.
- 19:57Speaker 7: But he did say it's Idaho football, and I think
- 19:59Speaker 7: that's the right call based on the calls or the
- 20:02Speaker 7: views we saw on the replay board.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Correction, it'll be Utah's ball. First down. I'm really confused
- 20:10Speaker 1: right now. I am really confused right now.
- 20:14Speaker 7: But he was very definitive with that, and I can
- 20:16Speaker 7: tell you who else is confused down there. The coaching
- 20:20Speaker 7: staff and Thomas Ford Jr., the head coach at Idaho,
- 20:23Speaker 7: because he was pretty sure that his team was going
- 20:25Speaker 7: to get that recovery of the fumble. So Utah catches
- 20:28Speaker 7: a break right here, and they'll begin first and ten
- 20:29Speaker 7: at their own 32-yard line.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I'll be a homer. I love the results of the
- 20:33Speaker 1: play right there.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 20:34Speaker 1: So Utah did catch a.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Break there, and– The ref didn't know what was going
- 20:43Speaker 2: on in that scenario. Illegal touching by the kicking team
- 20:47Speaker 2: indicates that somebody ran out of bounds and then came
- 20:51Speaker 2: back in bounds, didn't reestablish himself in bounds and touch
- 20:54Speaker 2: the football. That's the only way that the kicking team
- 20:57Speaker 2: can be guilty of illegal touching. a punt team is
- 21:02Speaker 2: allowed to touch the football. They can down the football
- 21:05Speaker 2: at any point that you can run down and you
- 21:07Speaker 2: can receive the football and down it there. You can't
- 21:10Speaker 2: advance it, but you can down it. The only time
- 21:12Speaker 2: you can advance it or retake possession is if Monte
- 21:16Speaker 2: Carvalho muffs, the punt touches the punt. Like he did,
- 21:20Speaker 2: which Utah got bailed out. It doesn't change the result
- 21:22Speaker 2: of the game. Utah was not going to lose that game.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Even if that ball gets turned over, but bad, bad,
- 21:30Speaker 2: bad referee in that moment, even though it benefited Utah. James,
- 21:36Speaker 2: can you explain the scenario we have going on right now?
- 21:38Speaker 2: Should we just go to this listener while he's trying
- 21:40Speaker 2: to explain? He is not ready to come on the air.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Okay.
- 21:45Speaker 2: But it is, maybe we could talk about it a
- 21:48Speaker 2: little later. Your calls are more than welcome.
- 21:50Speaker 5: 877-353-0700.
- 21:50Speaker 1: He just hugged up. Okay. I'll explain it. Uh, I'm not,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna leave names out.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Um, We had a caller ready, I think, to give
- 22:04Speaker 4: an opinion on the Utes game last night.
- 22:06Speaker 1: We didn't get that far.
- 22:08Speaker 4: All of a sudden, I hear presumably a significant other,
- 22:11Speaker 4: maybe a wife. In the background, and he is trying
- 22:15Speaker 4: to explain to her the concept of a listener calling
- 22:18Speaker 4: in to a radio show.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Please call back in. 877-353-0700.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Please call back, my man. We would love to have
- 22:25Speaker 2: you on.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I would love to have you, and I would love
- 22:28Speaker 1: to have your wife on, or whoever that was.
- 22:30Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 1: Let's talk to both of you. Let's do this. It
- 22:37Speaker 1: was one of those.
- 22:38Speaker 4: She sounded really confused, and he sounded... He had a
- 22:43Speaker 4: hard time coming up with why it is even a
- 22:47Speaker 4: good idea to do something like this. It's a great idea.
- 22:52Speaker 4: Don't be exasperated. And don't be ashamed if you live
- 22:58Speaker 4: with someone who doesn't quite get it.
- 23:00Speaker 1: It's still totally valid, and we want to hear from you.
- 23:02Speaker 4: It's a safe space here on the channel.
- 23:04Speaker 2: There is a whole age demographic now that is old
- 23:08Speaker 2: enough and is now listening to sports talk radio like
- 23:11Speaker 2: a lame old guy. That is far from being lame
- 23:13Speaker 2: and old, but the, the collar driven show is a
- 23:16Speaker 2: lot less common than it used to be.
- 23:19Speaker 1: So I get it.
- 23:20Speaker 2: If you're like a married couple in your twenties or
- 23:23Speaker 2: maybe even early thirties, it could be a less of
- 23:26Speaker 2: a familiar concept.
- 23:27Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 23:27Speaker 1: And one or both partners.
- 23:29Speaker 4: I didn't, I could only, you know, you, you overhear something,
- 23:33Speaker 4: but you don't, you don't really make out any words.
- 23:36Speaker 4: That's what I was getting from, from the, the woman
- 23:40Speaker 4: he was talking to. So I don't want to, I
- 23:42Speaker 4: don't want to even presume what she might've said, but it,
- 23:44Speaker 4: but it seemed like it was, hold on.
- 23:48Speaker 1: They care what you think on this radio show. And
- 23:50Speaker 1: we do. Yes, we care.
- 23:52Speaker 2: If you're still listening, we want to hear from both
- 23:56Speaker 2: of you.
- 23:56Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 23:56Speaker 1: It was bad. I felt for the guy.
- 24:03Speaker 4: He just wanted to go on the radio show and
- 24:05Speaker 4: talk with some football buddies about football.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Okay, I don't like to use the airing of grievances
- 24:12Speaker 2: as a threat, but if we don't get a call
- 24:15Speaker 2: back from that gentleman at some point today, then I'm
- 24:18Speaker 2: airing a grievance with whoever stopped that call from happening.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Okay.
- 24:21Speaker 1: All right. I want these calls, man. You're on notice.
- 24:23Speaker 1: 8 7 7 3 5 3 0 700. All right.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Best part of the game. How crazy dynamic, potent, inventive,
- 24:29Speaker 2: and exciting the offense looks.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Yes.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Mac G he went in his bag. And if he
- 24:35Speaker 2: did that against Idaho, I promise you, he's going to
- 24:37Speaker 2: do it even more against Arkansas.
- 24:39Speaker 1: The worst.
- 24:40Speaker 2: I thought Idaho should have ran the ball with the
- 24:41Speaker 2: kitchen sink more so productive and so reminiscent of scataboo.
- 24:45Speaker 2: That is a, that's high praise. for the, uh, the
- 24:49Speaker 2: young Idaho former walk on Hayden Kinchelow. But yeah, uh, there,
- 24:53Speaker 2: there were some moments where Idaho was running the ball
- 24:56Speaker 2: far too effectively. And you don't like to see that
- 24:59Speaker 2: against the Utah defensive front that remember is also in
- 25:03Speaker 2: their first game. Uh, this from 44, 46 trenches did
- 25:07Speaker 2: just okay. So a good thing saw some bad things.
- 25:11Speaker 2: There's some young studs on the D line. They just
- 25:13Speaker 2: need some experience. O line has to be better, but
- 25:15Speaker 2: they weren't abysmal. I think that's, I think if you're
- 25:18Speaker 2: talking with Mac G Kevin McGimmon, I think if we're
- 25:22Speaker 2: talking with Jordan gross today, if we're talking with the
- 25:25Speaker 2: players themselves, they're probably giving themselves like a C plus
- 25:29Speaker 2: or a B minus grade on the offensive line, because
- 25:32Speaker 2: ultimately what matters is, did you win the game?
- 25:35Speaker 1: Did you keep the pocket mostly clean?
- 25:37Speaker 2: Did you prevent anybody from getting hurt?
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you did.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Was it a dominant performance? Was it something indicative of
- 25:44Speaker 2: what your best should look like? Probably not, right? Kelvin
- 25:49Speaker 2: Obot played a lot of left guard in this game,
- 25:52Speaker 2: a lot of left guard in this game. I'm glad
- 25:54Speaker 2: to see the five-star getting run, getting use. I think
- 25:57Speaker 2: you need to do that, accelerate his growth and things
- 26:00Speaker 2: like that. There were some growing pains there. There was
- 26:04Speaker 2: like a delayed movement from him on one snap where
- 26:07Speaker 2: the entire line fires off and he was kind of
- 26:09Speaker 2: the last guy and he got beat on that play
- 26:12Speaker 2: because of it.
- 26:14Speaker 1: You don't begrudge that.
- 26:16Speaker 2: You don't, you don't get crazy about that because he's
- 26:19Speaker 2: a true freshman playing in his first game.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Right.
- 26:22Speaker 4: And technically for compared to what he's been playing his
- 26:26Speaker 4: whole life, certainly in high school, he's playing out of position.
- 26:29Speaker 2: So there's, he's getting used to a new position. So
- 26:33Speaker 2: I think there were a lot of really good things.
- 26:35Speaker 2: This also from 44, 46. I thought Utah's young guys
- 26:38Speaker 2: that played late showed a ton of promise. Hey, Lou
- 26:41Speaker 2: has my attention along with shove as Soto can't describe it,
- 26:44Speaker 2: but there's a really good feel to this team. And
- 26:46Speaker 2: I think we're in the beginning stages of something really special.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Go Utes.
- 26:50Speaker 2: That is the hope. I think we saw glimmers of that.
- 26:53Speaker 2: And I think we saw glimmers of, of the opposite, right?
- 26:57Speaker 2: Where it's just like, man, they are scratching the surface
- 27:01Speaker 2: of on how good they can be. And then there
- 27:03Speaker 2: was like some, Oh, they might also be scratching the
- 27:05Speaker 2: surface of how disastrous this could be. If you don't
- 27:08Speaker 2: finish a sack on a blitz and you've sold out
- 27:12Speaker 2: and a tight end is by himself behind the defense
- 27:15Speaker 2: and doesn't drop a pass, right? If you don't finish those,
- 27:22Speaker 2: if you don't close those holes against Arkansas, if you're
- 27:26Speaker 2: not more potent in your pass rush against Utah state
- 27:30Speaker 2: or BYU, things are going to get dicey, right? But
- 27:35Speaker 2: for a first game under a largely new staff with
- 27:38Speaker 2: so many new pieces moving, I'm, I'm pleased with the results,
- 27:43Speaker 2: 66 points, 14. You gave up that one kind of
- 27:48Speaker 2: like significant drive for Idaho. You don't want to watch
- 27:52Speaker 2: Idaho drive down in whatever it was like 11 plays,
- 27:57Speaker 2: and punch it in. That's not good to give that up.
- 28:01Speaker 2: But again, we're talking first game here. If these problems
- 28:05Speaker 2: are not cleaned up, if they do persist through an
- 28:08Speaker 2: Arkansas game, now we're having a different conversation. But first blush,
- 28:14Speaker 2: a lot to be excited about as a Utah fan.
- 28:18Speaker 2: And fewer things, far more positives than negatives. A lot
- 28:22Speaker 2: to be excited about and a couple of things that
- 28:24Speaker 2: you're probably now worried about. but fewer things to worry
- 28:27Speaker 2: about than to be positive about after a game like
- 28:30Speaker 2: that one.
- 28:30Speaker 1: And that is why you play those games. So that's
- 28:33Speaker 1: why everyone except Rutgers plays those games. Oh my gosh.
- 28:37Speaker 1: We'll get to that later. UMass goodness gracious. But yeah,
- 28:41Speaker 1: we'll get to that later. There's a couple of things
- 28:43Speaker 1: on there about that game. That was crazy.
- 28:47Speaker 4: As we, as they got in the game prep mode,
- 28:49Speaker 4: a couple of weeks before the game, Oh, see, we
- 28:52Speaker 4: had talked to Devin. We'd heard sound from practice and,
- 28:57Speaker 4: And we both were talking off air about like, if
- 29:02Speaker 4: you would just get decent O-line play, the creativity in
- 29:07Speaker 4: this offense with the rhinos and with the versatility with,
- 29:12Speaker 4: I mean, we didn't even know that Brayden Pagan had
- 29:15Speaker 4: a 12 yard end of round touchdown rush in him.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Now we know, okay, you got versatility with some of
- 29:22Speaker 4: these receivers that can take handoffs and, and, and, Weishan
- 29:26Speaker 4: Parker had a couple of touchdown catches. We didn't see
- 29:29Speaker 4: a whole lot of that of receiving prowess from him
- 29:32Speaker 4: last season. He showed that off last night. But we
- 29:35Speaker 4: were talking about even before last night's game, the potential
- 29:38Speaker 4: for creativity. and the versatility with some of these players,
- 29:42Speaker 4: you just get decent O-line play. You could have an
- 29:45Speaker 4: incredible offense because of the deception and all the stuff
- 29:49Speaker 4: that I think last night completely validated our thoughts on
- 29:54Speaker 4: that OC, because I, of course the O-line could have
- 29:58Speaker 4: played a lot better. You, wanted to see better play
- 30:01Speaker 4: against an FCS team, especially more dominance in the trenches there,
- 30:05Speaker 4: but they didn't dominate and they still were able to
- 30:11Speaker 4: do a whole lot of damage over 600 yards because of,
- 30:16Speaker 4: I think the creativity with this offense, it's going to
- 30:18Speaker 4: keep defenses on their toes. And I think that could
- 30:20Speaker 4: make up a lot for maybe some less than a
- 30:26Speaker 4: grade offensive line play.
- 30:29Speaker 6: Yes.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Offensive creativity. You can scheme your way into some of that.
- 30:36Speaker 2: You don't want to have to is I think the
- 30:38Speaker 2: reason why some people are holding their breath a little bit.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 30:41Speaker 2: But strong start. We'll see what the voice of the
- 30:44Speaker 2: Utes thought about the game last night. Bill Riley is
- 30:47Speaker 2: going to join us on the program because he does
- 30:49Speaker 2: on Fridays. We want to hear from you at 877-353-0700.
- 30:51Speaker 2: Lee Sterling is going to give us some picks in
- 30:57Speaker 2: our 12 o'clock hour. We're focusing on the start of
- 31:01Speaker 2: a Utah football season, the start of college football season,
- 31:03Speaker 2: week one games last night, tonight, tomorrow, Sunday, Monday.
- 31:09Speaker 1: We're rolling, baby. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN
- 31:11Speaker 1: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 31:26Speaker 10: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 31:29Speaker 10: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 31:33Speaker 11: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Welcome in the voice of the youths, Bill Riley. This
- 31:53Speaker 2: conversation brought to you weekly by our friends... at Handy
- 31:57Speaker 2: and Handy, HandyLawUtah.com if you need any help with legal advice.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Bill Riley, welcome to the show. How are you?
- 32:06Speaker 6: Doing good, Sean. How about yourself?
- 32:07Speaker 1: Doing okay.
- 32:08Speaker 2: The pipes got nice and warm last night. You had
- 32:11Speaker 2: to call, what, nine touchdowns?
- 32:14Speaker 7: Nine touchdowns, a field goal, an interception, fumble recovery, some
- 32:20Speaker 7: weird decisions by referees, but yeah, lots of stuff last night.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Best thing about that first game for you in this
- 32:27Speaker 2: Utah football team?
- 32:29Speaker 7: No major injuries, and I think the offensive line looked
- 32:33Speaker 7: pretty good, and I think there's a lot of weapons
- 32:37Speaker 7: that Kevin McGiven has at his disposal for that offense, too.
- 32:41Speaker 7: I said this after the game. I don't know if
- 32:43Speaker 7: this makes any sense on the postgame show. Utah showed
- 32:47Speaker 7: a lot without showing a lot.
- 32:48Speaker 6: Does that make sense?
- 32:49Speaker 12: Yes.
- 32:51Speaker 8: Yes.
- 32:51Speaker 5: There were.
- 32:54Speaker 2: It was creative enough to keep you guessing and make
- 32:57Speaker 2: you wonder without going, I think all the way into
- 33:00Speaker 2: the old magic bag.
- 33:03Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 33:03Speaker 7: He didn't have to go deep in the bag, but
- 33:06Speaker 7: just formationally, they just showed so many different looks and
- 33:10Speaker 7: so many different formations. And honestly, there are seven, eight,
- 33:15Speaker 7: nine different guys on any given, you know, series that
- 33:19Speaker 7: could touch the ball and be a dangerous weapon. So I,
- 33:23Speaker 7: I didn't know if that made sense. I said it,
- 33:25Speaker 7: and Zach Moss kind of got it. He's like, yeah,
- 33:27Speaker 7: that kind of made sense. So I think that's right.
- 33:30Speaker 7: I think they showed a lot without showing a lot.
- 33:31Speaker 7: So I thought it was a good first game. They
- 33:34Speaker 7: gave up the one drive where they made that one
- 33:37Speaker 7: guy look like Mike Allstott running back from Idaho. That's
- 33:41Speaker 7: a reference for some of you that are old enough
- 33:43Speaker 7: to remember Mike Allstott.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Put some respect on the name of Hayden Kincheloe.
- 33:48Speaker 7: Kincheloe, he just looked like a bowling ball that Utah
- 33:52Speaker 7: couldn't tackle on a couple of plays. But outside of that,
- 33:55Speaker 7: I thought it was a pretty good effort.
- 33:57Speaker 6: What about you?
- 33:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought similar to what you're saying, you did
- 34:01Speaker 2: what you were supposed to do against a big sky
- 34:04Speaker 2: football team with a couple of moments of mental errors and.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Some lack of execution.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Didn't finish a play on that– Tillman blitz. That should
- 34:14Speaker 2: have been a big negative for the offense and ended
- 34:16Speaker 2: up being a 44 yard game. Like you got to
- 34:18Speaker 2: clean up those types of things, but I also want
- 34:21Speaker 2: to be reasonable and remember that this is the first
- 34:24Speaker 2: game of the season. And this is, you know, first
- 34:27Speaker 2: real action for some of these guys, not for Tillman,
- 34:30Speaker 2: but for some of these guys, it's their first action,
- 34:32Speaker 2: either in a Utah uniform or the first real action period.
- 34:35Speaker 1: So you got to allow for a few growing pains here.
- 34:39Speaker 2: And of course we came in all off season long,
- 34:41Speaker 2: as soon as as soon as last season ended, you know,
- 34:44Speaker 2: one of the major questions was, well, what's the offensive
- 34:46Speaker 2: line going to look like?
- 34:48Speaker 1: And they passed the test. This is a big win.
- 34:50Speaker 2: You kept, you kept Devin upright for the most part.
- 34:53Speaker 2: It wasn't their best. I don't think, but it was
- 34:56Speaker 2: good enough.
- 34:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:58Speaker 2: And I wonder how, how, how quickly the improvement can
- 35:03Speaker 2: come and will come and how much of it will
- 35:05Speaker 2: have to do with still getting the right mix because
- 35:07Speaker 2: they played a lot of combinations last night.
- 35:11Speaker 6: Well, yeah, they did.
- 35:11Speaker 7: I mean, Keith Olsen didn't play last night. He's going
- 35:13Speaker 7: to be a key part of what they do. And
- 35:15Speaker 7: they were mixing and matching some guys in some different spots.
- 35:17Speaker 7: You know, when you, when you tally 633 yards, the
- 35:23Speaker 7: most yards you've put up in 16 years, that's, you know,
- 35:27Speaker 7: that's a good number. And they've played some teams and
- 35:30Speaker 7: put up some numbers. I think the offensive line, honestly,
- 35:34Speaker 7: you know, it's going to be a little bit of
- 35:35Speaker 7: a work in progress for a few games, even if
- 35:39Speaker 7: they settle on those five guys, just because you're getting
- 35:41Speaker 7: reps and getting used to playing next to each other
- 35:43Speaker 7: in game situations. Practice situation's great, but doing it in
- 35:48Speaker 7: game situations against another team's different.
- 35:50Speaker 6: So, I thought they were good last night.
- 35:54Speaker 7: I thought they did what they wanted to do. Devin
- 35:56Speaker 7: Dampier didn't get sacked. Bird Ficklin didn't get sacked. They
- 35:59Speaker 7: ran the ball mostly. But they did what they should
- 36:02Speaker 7: have done against an Idaho 1AA team. Now next week
- 36:06Speaker 7: when Arkansas comes rolling in with some SEC athletes and
- 36:09Speaker 7: some good players, it'll be a bigger test. But I
- 36:12Speaker 7: thought for game number one, they didn't answer all the questions, Sean,
- 36:16Speaker 7: but they answered a lot of the questions.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Do you think, because we got to see a lot
- 36:21Speaker 2: of people, as you already referenced, and there's weapons all
- 36:23Speaker 2: over the place. Do you think anybody surprised even the
- 36:27Speaker 2: coaching staff a little bit? Like LaMarcus Bell, did he
- 36:30Speaker 2: earn himself... some more run against Arkansas and or Utah
- 36:34Speaker 2: state by what he did last night? Or is it
- 36:36Speaker 2: going to be compartmentalized because this coaching staff knows who
- 36:40Speaker 2: he was going up against at what point in the
- 36:42Speaker 2: game he was being asked to do it and credit
- 36:44Speaker 2: to him because he took advantage of his opportunities. But
- 36:47Speaker 2: I mean, great things from him, great things from Steve Chavez, Soto,
- 36:51Speaker 2: and some of the guys who maybe we haven't been
- 36:52Speaker 2: talking about a ton in the preseason.
- 36:55Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know that he jumps three spots on
- 36:59Speaker 7: the depth chart, but I mean, they like LaMarcus Bell.
- 37:01Speaker 7: This guy was the 6A player of the year in
- 37:04Speaker 7: the state of Oregon two years ago. This guy, 25 touchdowns, 1,500 yards,
- 37:09Speaker 7: number two recruit out of Oregon. So he's a really
- 37:12Speaker 7: good player, true freshman. I think what he does is
- 37:16Speaker 7: he and Matiaki Helu are now probably battling for that
- 37:20Speaker 7: fourth spot a little bit. You know, I think that
- 37:22Speaker 7: effort last night, although Helu was good too, he had
- 37:24Speaker 7: three carries for 25 yards. I don't think you're supplanting
- 37:27Speaker 7: Wayshawn Parker, Daniel Bray, or Chavez Soto. But I think
- 37:32Speaker 7: what you've done is you've shown you can do it
- 37:34Speaker 7: in the game. And I think that if something happens,
- 37:37Speaker 7: I think now, you know, not that they don't trust him,
- 37:40Speaker 7: but I think it gives the coaching staff a little
- 37:42Speaker 7: bit more trust to have seen him do it in
- 37:43Speaker 7: the game.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Colton Swan calling his first defensive game in for the
- 37:49Speaker 2: university of Utah. And there's a couple of schools of
- 37:53Speaker 2: thought from both the offensive and defensive side of things.
- 37:56Speaker 2: You can play pretty vanilla. You can just tell your guys,
- 37:59Speaker 2: let's see what you can do. Let's see what you've got.
- 38:01Speaker 2: You're supposed to physically outmatch these individuals. We're going to
- 38:04Speaker 2: do our base defense all game. We're going to do
- 38:06Speaker 2: a four-man rush all game. Colton Swan calling did not
- 38:10Speaker 2: take that approach. He went out there and he ran
- 38:15Speaker 2: a bunch of stunts. He was blitzing like crazy. He
- 38:18Speaker 2: was rotating a bunch of different guys. I was a
- 38:20Speaker 2: little bit surprised at how much we saw of that
- 38:23Speaker 2: creativity from the defense.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Where did you think that was going to play out?
- 38:28Speaker 7: I was a little surprised, too. The one thing I
- 38:30Speaker 7: would say is I think Utah, for all that aggressiveness,
- 38:33Speaker 7: I would have liked to have seen a couple of
- 38:35Speaker 7: more plays made. You know, like you mentioned the Tillman
- 38:37Speaker 7: play where that could have been like a 25-yard sack
- 38:41Speaker 7: for a loss. There was one play, you know, there
- 38:43Speaker 7: were a couple of plays that might have been turnover-worthy
- 38:46Speaker 7: type plays. But I like the aggression from Colton Swan.
- 38:49Speaker 6: I do.
- 38:50Speaker 7: I like that. I don't know if that's going to
- 38:51Speaker 7: be every game in, game out. Maybe he just wanted
- 38:55Speaker 7: to cut these guys loose because they've been a little
- 38:57Speaker 7: bit more vanilla in fall camp and given an opportunity
- 39:00Speaker 7: to do some things. I thought Trey Reynolds was really,
- 39:04Speaker 7: really active last night. I thought defensive end Ethan Day
- 39:08Speaker 7: had a nice night last night. Rabbit Evans, who's back
- 39:11Speaker 7: and healthy again, I thought he had a nice night
- 39:13Speaker 7: last night. I thought there were some guys that really
- 39:15Speaker 7: popped last night, but I'm never going to be upset
- 39:18Speaker 7: when a defensive coordinator decides he wants to get after
- 39:21Speaker 7: it and be aggressive.
- 39:23Speaker 2: It's fun to see the stunts also give you a
- 39:26Speaker 2: little opportunity to see like what, when you put a
- 39:29Speaker 2: young player, like a Carson Kalfusi in the right situation
- 39:33Speaker 2: and allow him to use what God gave him, the
- 39:36Speaker 2: results of some of that, you're like, okay, if you
- 39:39Speaker 2: can get more of that from Kalfusi, now we're cooking
- 39:42Speaker 2: with gas here.
- 39:44Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 7: I didn't mention Carson, but he's a guy when I
- 39:47Speaker 7: talked to Luther Ellis this summer, I mean, He's got
- 39:50Speaker 7: a chance to be that next great Utah interior defensive lineman.
- 39:55Speaker 1: He's a sophomore.
- 39:56Speaker 7: He comes from that Kofusi bloodline. The Kofusis just keep
- 40:00Speaker 7: coming at Utah and coming and coming, and they're always
- 40:04Speaker 7: hard workers. Carson's got a chance, I think, to be
- 40:07Speaker 7: really special. He flashed that a couple of times last night,
- 40:11Speaker 7: got the quarterback sack for Utah. So I think they,
- 40:14Speaker 7: I think they're still kind of figuring out with some
- 40:17Speaker 7: of the new guys, the rotations. I think the one
- 40:20Speaker 7: guy they don't need to figure out is Carson Kapusi
- 40:22Speaker 7: because I think, you know, he was locked in as
- 40:25Speaker 7: one of the starters last night and I don't think
- 40:27Speaker 7: he did anything but reaffirm that.
- 40:31Speaker 2: As long as we're talking about legendary names and, and
- 40:34Speaker 2: bloodlines here in the state of Utah, when it comes
- 40:36Speaker 2: to football, uh, I did a disservice to Elijah Ellis
- 40:40Speaker 2: in this preseason, not talking about him enough. He's on
- 40:44Speaker 2: the field from the first defensive snap all the way
- 40:47Speaker 2: deep into the fourth quarter.
- 40:49Speaker 1: And it's clear that they want to use him a lot.
- 40:51Speaker 2: He has that kind of tweener size versatility that obviously
- 40:56Speaker 2: his brothers have possessed both in college football and And
- 40:59Speaker 2: in the NFL, they're going to use him to rush
- 41:01Speaker 2: the passer every now and again. He's still listed officially
- 41:04Speaker 2: as a linebacker rather than a defensive end. What did
- 41:07Speaker 2: you think of Elijah Ellis, his performance, and also the
- 41:10Speaker 2: way they want.
- 41:10Speaker 1: To use him?
- 41:11Speaker 7: Well, I think he popped a little bit at the
- 41:13Speaker 7: end of last year. I saw him in fall camp.
- 41:15Speaker 7: He looked good again. And I think kind of the
- 41:18Speaker 7: same way we talk about a guy like Hunter Andrews
- 41:21Speaker 7: as a weapon on offense, I think that's kind of
- 41:24Speaker 7: how you have to talk about Elijah Ellis on defense
- 41:28Speaker 7: because you can move him around because of his athleticism
- 41:32Speaker 7: and versatility. I mean, you've got three really good linebackers
- 41:36Speaker 7: in Polu and Reynolds and Hall. He can play linebacker.
- 41:40Speaker 7: But I think because of his speed, his athleticism, and
- 41:43Speaker 7: I think everybody named Ellis has a nose for the ball,
- 41:46Speaker 7: I think you can line him up on the edge
- 41:48Speaker 7: and just say, go after it. I think he's that–
- 41:51Speaker 7: that weapon Jackson Benny's kind of one of those guys
- 41:53Speaker 7: too you can line Jackson Benny up if you told
- 41:56Speaker 7: Benny to give you a couple of reps of defensive
- 41:58Speaker 7: tackle he'd probably give you a couple of good reps
- 41:59Speaker 7: so I think Ellis's role is.
- 42:02Speaker 6: Only going to grow as this year goes.
- 42:03Speaker 7: Along and I don't know where he's going to end
- 42:07Speaker 7: up or if he's just going to be one of
- 42:08Speaker 7: those chess pieces that that Colton Swan likes to move
- 42:12Speaker 7: around quite a bit because I don't know that there's
- 42:15Speaker 7: a defined position for him I think we just he's
- 42:18Speaker 7: one of those guys you just refer to as a
- 42:19Speaker 7: ball player right.
- 42:22Speaker 2: Football player is the ultimate compliment you can get from
- 42:25Speaker 2: a coach when you get to a certain level and
- 42:27Speaker 2: they tell you, oh, he's just a football player. That's
- 42:31Speaker 2: them saying you're the king of the.
- 42:32Speaker 1: World, effectively.
- 42:34Speaker 7: That's exactly right.
- 42:35Speaker 6: So, you know, I thought it was a good night.
- 42:37Speaker 6: You know, I thought, you know.
- 42:39Speaker 7: Special teams were pretty good. I think Utah may have
- 42:41Speaker 7: caught a break. I'm not sure. I haven't seen a
- 42:44Speaker 7: definitive angle on that punt return. But then, you know,
- 42:47Speaker 7: then Monica Valio comes back and makes amends and gets
- 42:50Speaker 7: a 25-yard return. Kicking game looked good. They only punted
- 42:54Speaker 7: once last night. So, you know, it's an opening game.
- 42:59Speaker 7: And you check the boxes. I wanted to see the
- 43:01Speaker 7: line of scrimmages be good. They were. I wanted to
- 43:03Speaker 7: see them get out of there healthy.
- 43:04Speaker 6: They did.
- 43:06Speaker 7: I think it checks a lot of boxes, and now
- 43:08Speaker 7: you've got a couple of extra days. To quote my
- 43:10Speaker 7: old friend Larry Kristowiak, he used to love to say, hey,
- 43:13Speaker 7: the price of poker goes up, and it will next
- 43:15Speaker 7: week because an SEC team comes in next week, and
- 43:18Speaker 7: they're going to have better athletes across the board. Coming
- 43:21Speaker 7: off an 0-10, 10 straight losses, they're probably not going
- 43:24Speaker 7: to lose tomorrow to Northern Alabama. But it's going to
- 43:28Speaker 7: be an interesting adjustment for Utah to go from a
- 43:32Speaker 7: 1AA middle-of-the-pack program to an SEC program that's got great athletes.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Bill Riley, our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 43:40Speaker 2: talking all things Utah football. With that in mind, let's
- 43:43Speaker 2: get a little nitpicky on this first Utah performance because
- 43:46Speaker 2: it wasn't all pretty, right? There were some things that
- 43:49Speaker 2: you'd like to see cleaned up. If you're prioritizing, if
- 43:53Speaker 2: you're in the film room with Morgan Scali and his
- 43:55Speaker 2: staff today, Where do you think that primary focus is?
- 43:59Speaker 2: What is job number one when it comes to fixing
- 44:02Speaker 2: the few things that did go wrong in the Idaho game?
- 44:05Speaker 7: I think to me it's making the plays when they're there, Sean.
- 44:10Speaker 7: You mentioned the Tillman sack. Make that play. You can
- 44:13Speaker 7: get away with that in Idaho, but if you have
- 44:15Speaker 7: that opportunity against Arkansas or Colorado or Houston or BYU,
- 44:21Speaker 7: those are plays.
- 44:22Speaker 6: You've got to make. So make the plays when they're there.
- 44:25Speaker 7: I thought Devin Dampier had a really efficient night last night.
- 44:29Speaker 7: He threw two balls off of his back foot that
- 44:31Speaker 7: might have been if he was able to step into
- 44:33Speaker 7: a little bit more touchdowns to Braden Pagan. I think
- 44:37Speaker 7: the other one was to Ricky Johnson, maybe. Anyway, I
- 44:40Speaker 7: just thought they left some plays out there, and that's
- 44:43Speaker 7: going to happen in the first game. But if I'm
- 44:45Speaker 7: out there, I might be circling those or bringing those
- 44:48Speaker 7: up and saying, hey, if we make this play– yeah,
- 44:52Speaker 7: we're going to score more points, but these are plays
- 44:54Speaker 7: we have to make against other opponents. Just trying to
- 44:58Speaker 7: think of some other stuff. You know, probably that one
- 45:01Speaker 7: drive that Idaho had. That was one that Matt Morgan
- 45:04Speaker 7: mentioned at the postgame show, too. You know, you don't
- 45:07Speaker 7: want to give up a 13-play, 75 or whatever it
- 45:10Speaker 7: was yard drive, and you made that running back look
- 45:13Speaker 7: pretty good last night. You'd probably like to clean that
- 45:15Speaker 7: up a little bit, too.
- 45:16Speaker 6: What about you?
- 45:16Speaker 7: Where would you go?
- 45:18Speaker 1: Well, I'm like, we're, like I said, we're nitpicking.
- 45:20Speaker 2: I was happy to see Colton Swan show us a
- 45:23Speaker 2: little bit of his personal flavor, but I also wanted
- 45:26Speaker 2: to see him test his guys a little bit and
- 45:28Speaker 2: just be like, all right, four man rush, go get
- 45:30Speaker 2: that quarterback, create some pressure, win your battle. Idaho's got
- 45:34Speaker 2: decent amount of experience on their offensive line. So they get,
- 45:38Speaker 2: they get some credit here as well. Cause you know,
- 45:40Speaker 2: those are scholarship guys too. But if Utah football is
- 45:43Speaker 2: going to be the team, I think they, can be
- 45:46Speaker 2: this year. I need more from that defensive front in
- 45:49Speaker 2: the run game and in the past game, you know,
- 45:51Speaker 2: you gotta be able to flip that switch and win
- 45:54Speaker 2: your battle and do it, you know, hopefully more than
- 45:57Speaker 2: once per game. And we didn't really see that because
- 46:00Speaker 2: a lot of the pressure was manufactured pressure, if that
- 46:03Speaker 2: makes sense.
- 46:04Speaker 7: Yeah, they got a little exotic. They've got creative to
- 46:07Speaker 7: do it.
- 46:07Speaker 6: You're right.
- 46:08Speaker 7: It wasn't just that traditional four-down lineman. I'm going to
- 46:12Speaker 7: line up, beat you around the edge, and get to
- 46:13Speaker 7: the quarterback. Now, with that being said, too, it was
- 46:16Speaker 7: a lot of three-step drop stuff, too. He wasn't standing
- 46:19Speaker 7: in the pocket for a long time and would.
- 46:22Speaker 6: When he would flush, he would move pretty good. But
- 46:25Speaker 6: you're right.
- 46:25Speaker 7: You would love to be able to get a little
- 46:27Speaker 7: bit of pressure with just four.
- 46:29Speaker 2: So I was kind of laughing about this in the
- 46:32Speaker 2: first segment, right? All off season long, we were talking about,
- 46:36Speaker 2: holy cow, look at this embarrassment of riches. There's only
- 46:39Speaker 2: one football. How do you share it around? Well, last night,
- 46:43Speaker 2: Kevin McGibbon was Oprah's favorite things. You get a carry
- 46:46Speaker 2: and you get a reception and you get a touchdown play.
- 46:50Speaker 2: You're probably not going to be able to do that
- 46:52Speaker 2: against Arkansas, right? And maybe not against Utah State. And
- 46:56Speaker 2: as this season progresses, I think you have to kind
- 46:59Speaker 2: of like narrow the focus a little bit.
- 47:01Speaker 1: I have no doubt that way. Sean is going to
- 47:03Speaker 1: be leaned on heavily.
- 47:04Speaker 2: I have no doubt that we're going to see Devin
- 47:06Speaker 2: Dampier allowed to spread his wings, both in the passing
- 47:10Speaker 2: game and in the run game. Who else do you
- 47:13Speaker 2: think if it does come down to instead of what,
- 47:16Speaker 2: what do we have? 10 rushers last night, 10 guys
- 47:18Speaker 2: with carries who are the maybe five that you see
- 47:21Speaker 2: get the bulk of the touches in the run game
- 47:24Speaker 2: next week.
- 47:25Speaker 7: Well, I think it's always going to be damp here.
- 47:28Speaker 7: And I think as we saw last night, they like
- 47:30Speaker 7: using Bird Ficklin. Um, I mean, bird's just a weapon.
- 47:34Speaker 7: He's just explosive, but I think it's probably those top
- 47:37Speaker 7: three running backs. I mean, Daniel Bray, way, Sean Parker
- 47:41Speaker 7: and Chavez Soto. I think those are going to be
- 47:43Speaker 7: your primary run game guys. I mean, I just, I
- 47:47Speaker 7: think that's what it's going to be. Um, but as
- 47:50Speaker 7: we saw too, Brayden Pagan is fast and he's big
- 47:54Speaker 7: and he's strong. They got him on an end around,
- 47:56Speaker 7: but I think in the traditional run game, um, It
- 47:58Speaker 7: will be the two quarterbacks and then those top three
- 48:01Speaker 7: running backs. What's going to become interesting though, too, is,
- 48:04Speaker 7: I mean, Hunter Andrews can run the football. He was
- 48:07Speaker 7: a running back. He was an all district, all region
- 48:10Speaker 7: running back in high school in Texas, and he could
- 48:13Speaker 7: catch it too. So he is there. It's just that you,
- 48:17Speaker 7: you just, there's, there's one ball. There's about 10 different
- 48:22Speaker 7: guys and it's going to be, you know, Maybe it's
- 48:27Speaker 7: the old, how did you practice during the week? What
- 48:30Speaker 7: kind of effort did you give in practice? Because you
- 48:32Speaker 7: know that, Sean, the best motivator can be carries in
- 48:36Speaker 7: a game for how you perform in practice. So maybe
- 48:38Speaker 7: it goes that way. It's going to be the same
- 48:40Speaker 7: thing in a passing game. I think there's a pretty
- 48:42Speaker 7: defined top three wide receivers.
- 48:45Speaker 6: I think it's Pagan.
- 48:47Speaker 7: I think it's Johnson.
- 48:49Speaker 6: And I think it's.
- 48:49Speaker 7: Probably Whittemore in the slot. But Larry Simmons, when he
- 48:54Speaker 7: touches the ball, makes things happen. That should have been
- 48:56Speaker 7: a little nine-yard in-cut route that he turned into a
- 48:59Speaker 7: 25-yard pitch and catch or a 30-yard pitch and.
- 49:02Speaker 6: Catch last night.
- 49:02Speaker 7: So I think there's a top three, but a guy
- 49:06Speaker 7: like Simmons and maybe a guy like Scholes could threaten
- 49:10Speaker 7: that as well.
- 49:12Speaker 1: What games are you going to be watching this weekend, Bill?
- 49:14Speaker 7: I just want to look at Arkansas. I know they're
- 49:18Speaker 7: playing northern Alabama, but I just want to get a
- 49:20Speaker 7: look at, you know, Ryan Silverfield's team, just to kind
- 49:24Speaker 7: of see what is coming in here this, this, this
- 49:27Speaker 7: next week and see what they look like again against
- 49:30Speaker 7: a Northern Alabama team that they should probably handle. But let's,
- 49:34Speaker 7: let's see what they look because it doesn't always work
- 49:39Speaker 7: that way. As far as other games that are interesting tonight,
- 49:45Speaker 7: Miami Sanford. I mean, I know Miami's got to travel West,
- 49:49Speaker 7: but Nothing really intrigues me there. Other games this weekend,
- 49:54Speaker 7: I kind of want to duck in and see what
- 49:56Speaker 7: Houston looks like. They're hosting Oregon State. Boise State goes
- 50:01Speaker 7: to Oregon. Is Oregon what we think they are? Are
- 50:04Speaker 7: they going to blow Boise State out? Does Boise get
- 50:06Speaker 7: competitive in that game? Kind of want to see that
- 50:09Speaker 7: just a little bit, too. Clemson LSU is interesting, even
- 50:13Speaker 7: though Clemson's not ranked. You know, is all this stuff
- 50:16Speaker 7: at LSU, is all this outside noise a distraction? Is
- 50:20Speaker 7: it going to be a distraction to the team, or
- 50:22Speaker 7: are they focused on this thing? I think Wisconsin-Notre Dame
- 50:26Speaker 7: could be interesting on Sunday, too.
- 50:27Speaker 1: What about you?
- 50:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you hit most of the ones I'm
- 50:30Speaker 2: going to be looking at. Especially Houston, I want to
- 50:35Speaker 2: look at. I want to know what they are before
- 50:38Speaker 2: we see this Utah team go against them. Iowa State,
- 50:41Speaker 2: same thing. They've got Southeast Missouri State, though. There's not
- 50:45Speaker 2: a real excellent slate of premier matchups in Week 1,
- 50:50Speaker 2: but we'll take what we can get because football's back.
- 50:53Speaker 7: That's absolutely correct, and I'm just glad to have it back.
- 50:57Speaker 7: It was just so fun to have everybody back, to
- 50:59Speaker 7: strike the stadium last night, and having an SEC team
- 51:03Speaker 7: come in next week to a Ricycle Stadium would be
- 51:05Speaker 7: a blast.
- 51:06Speaker 2: Well, we'll talk before then, but enjoy your weekend, and...
- 51:10Speaker 2: Before we let you go, Handy and Handy, HandyLawUtah.com.
- 51:14Speaker 1: What do the people need to know?
- 51:16Speaker 7: Good personal injury attorneys. They've been such good people and
- 51:19Speaker 7: great supporters of ESPN 700 for so many years. And
- 51:23Speaker 7: if you're in an accident and need some help, if
- 51:25Speaker 7: your family is in a bind, if you've been hurt
- 51:28Speaker 7: on the job, let Preston and Garrett Handy take care

- 51:37Speaker 10: Thanks.
- 51:38Speaker 6: Thanks, Sean.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Great stuff.
- 51:41Speaker 2: And that's why we love to hear from Bill every
- 51:44Speaker 2: single week when we can. Big thanks to Handy and
- 51:46Speaker 2: Handy for making that possible. Reminder, before we double up
- 51:49Speaker 2: on our breaks here, join Spence Checketts today at Wasatch

- 52:16Speaker 1: Lots more to get to from this game. I want
- 52:18Speaker 1: to hear from you.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Best and worst of game number one, a 66-14 demolition
- 52:25Speaker 2: by Utah.
- 52:27Speaker 1: The Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 52:40Speaker 10: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 52:43Speaker 10: Hyundai Studio of.
- 52:51Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 52:53Speaker 5: 877-353-0700.
- 52:54Speaker 2: That's how you get a hold of us here on
- 52:55Speaker 2: the Sean O'Connell Show. I'm still chasing the white whale
- 52:58Speaker 2: of that guy who called in early yesterday.
- 53:01Speaker 1: And then got told maybe not to be calling in.
- 53:04Speaker 1: I don't know. We want you to call back, sir.
- 53:07Speaker 1: Any of you, please. 877-353-0700. Stay on.
- 53:12Speaker 3: The line.
- 53:12Speaker 1: And we would love to get.
- 53:14Speaker 2: I want to know your best and your worst thing
- 53:17Speaker 2: out of the game last night. We're going to do
- 53:19Speaker 2: this as an exercise every time Utah football plays. And
- 53:23Speaker 2: obviously the first game, when all of us are hyper-focused
- 53:27Speaker 2: on one thing or another, and... you're probably rewatching this weekend.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Like I'm rewatching this weekend. You're going to come up
- 53:33Speaker 2: with some more things on the rewatch, but at first
- 53:37Speaker 2: blush at first glance, the best and the worst thing
- 53:41Speaker 2: you saw from Utah football last night, let's, let's focus
- 53:44Speaker 2: mostly on the best here because it's a 66 to
- 53:48Speaker 2: 14 win. You're wanting to know the best thing about
- 53:50Speaker 2: wanting to know is the opportunity to go to a no,
- 53:53Speaker 2: it went how we thought it was going to go.
- 53:55Speaker 1: It went how you needed it to go.
- 53:57Speaker 2: With some moments that Oh, that's not good. There was
- 54:02Speaker 2: never a doubt that Utah was going to win this
- 54:04Speaker 2: football game from the moment that Idaho got off the
- 54:07Speaker 2: bus until the final whistle blew. This was always a
- 54:12Speaker 2: Utah football win, but there were some moments that you
- 54:15Speaker 2: have to create, you have to correct, you have to
- 54:17Speaker 2: clean up. I want to know what you saw, but
- 54:21Speaker 2: I also let's focus on the good stuff because You
- 54:24Speaker 2: had 10 guys carry the ball last night, all of
- 54:26Speaker 2: them for decent production, for good averages. Our guy Brandon
- 54:32Speaker 2: Rose got in the game.
- 54:33Speaker 1: How about that?
- 54:35Speaker 2: You went down to your third string quarterback in this one.
- 54:39Speaker 2: Daniel Bray. I think we're going to see a lot
- 54:41Speaker 2: more of Daniel Bray moving forward. He probably is mad
- 54:46Speaker 2: about how the game went last night.
- 54:48Speaker 1: I don't think anyone else is. I think everybody got
- 54:52Speaker 1: a little bit of frosting.
- 54:54Speaker 2: And that's what this team wanted and needed against the
- 54:57Speaker 2: university of Idaho. You play the role of the fan
- 55:03Speaker 2: who tells me what you liked and maybe a little
- 55:05Speaker 2: bit of what you didn't like.
- 55:06Speaker 1: I'll be the.
- 55:07Speaker 2: Guy that the coaches are like, well, he just shut
- 55:10Speaker 2: up because we won a game 66 to 14. Why
- 55:12Speaker 2: is he crying that Ethan day didn't have a sack? Well,
- 55:15Speaker 2: because I wanted to see it. One team sack is
- 55:21Speaker 2: something that is going to bother me about this Idaho performance.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Now, Idaho's got a mobile quarterback.
- 55:27Speaker 2: They've got a pretty experienced, although undersized, relative to the
- 55:30Speaker 2: youth's offensive line. And they were getting the ball out.
- 55:35Speaker 2: They're a well-coached team that knew they had to get
- 55:38Speaker 2: the ball out as soon as possible.
- 55:40Speaker 1: So, all right, good.
- 55:41Speaker 11: 877-353-0700.
- 55:43Speaker 2: Text in or call in and tell me the best
- 55:46Speaker 2: and worst part of the game for you. This coming
- 55:49Speaker 2: from Adam on the text line. Felt like the game
- 55:52Speaker 2: was about a B- for me. Good first game. Impressed
- 55:56Speaker 2: with how big guys are. Way Sean and Jackson Benny
- 55:58Speaker 2: in particular. Bird looked much improved. Excited for the year
- 56:04Speaker 2: and the future. Yeah, I mean, in a game like this,
- 56:07Speaker 2: you got to see the coaches go all the way
- 56:10Speaker 2: down on the depth chart and get some of the
- 56:12Speaker 2: younger guys out there and have them play. And there
- 56:15Speaker 2: is a talent pipeline, a robust talent pipeline that hopefully
- 56:20Speaker 2: has this Utah team set up, at least from a
- 56:22Speaker 2: skill position standpoint.
- 56:24Speaker 1: For years to come. OC, can I share my favorite
- 56:28Speaker 1: one of our texts so far?
- 56:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 56:30Speaker 4: So this is my best from the game, is Brian
- 56:33Speaker 4: Conley's text. All-time win percentage against Idaho is 52%, which
- 56:38Speaker 4: is wild. They're now 15-12 against Idaho, but most of
- 56:42Speaker 4: those are the 60s and before.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Set that aside.
- 56:46Speaker 4: Against BYU, it's 60%. So we should beat BYU by
- 56:49Speaker 4: six or seven touchdowns this year.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Yeah, obviously. Obviously. That's we love, we love the rivalry banter.
- 56:55Speaker 1: Thank you, Brian, for texting it. John on the, on
- 57:01Speaker 1: the phone line. Is that right? 8 7 7 3
- 57:04Speaker 1: 5 3 0 700. John, how are you?
- 57:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 57:07Speaker 3: Sean, Sean, huge fan, huge fan.
- 57:10Speaker 1: I listen to you every day. Thank you.
- 57:15Speaker 5: Yo.
- 57:15Speaker 3: So I was like, uh, the way he turned around
- 57:19Speaker 3: on that one catch.
- 57:22Speaker 13: To ship his body and use his footwork.
- 57:24Speaker 14: I think it's going to be.
- 57:24Speaker 5: Amazing this year.
- 57:27Speaker 3: And then the other guy got his capacity. He's not
- 57:31Speaker 3: going to breathe the sack, the sack.
- 57:34Speaker 5: Total, but I think he's going to be up there, man.
- 57:36Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, John, thank you for the phone call.
- 57:39Speaker 1: And yeah, Carson Cal Fousey is a mountain of a man.
- 57:44Speaker 1: That is a big boy.
- 57:47Speaker 2: He was able to, on that twisting stunt, he was
- 57:50Speaker 2: able to get the only sack of the game for
- 57:52Speaker 2: the university of Utah and his problem. The only problem
- 57:58Speaker 2: you're going to have with Carson Kalfusi is pad level, right?
- 58:03Speaker 2: Because he's so dang big, their offensive linemen are going
- 58:06Speaker 2: to try to get underneath him and root him out
- 58:07Speaker 2: of the, out of the hole. That's he's going to
- 58:09Speaker 2: really have to figure out how to anchor himself down.
- 58:13Speaker 1: And we saw some good things from the D tackles.
- 58:15Speaker 2: We also saw like, you know, maybe you need a
- 58:18Speaker 2: little bit more stiffness up front when it comes to
- 58:23Speaker 2: playing against a one double a team to the first
- 58:27Speaker 2: point that John made. I'm trying to It's like going
- 58:32Speaker 2: on a first date. If you can remember that phase
- 58:34Speaker 2: of your life where you're just like, Oh my gosh,
- 58:38Speaker 2: I might marry that girl. And of course it's not
- 58:42Speaker 2: cool to think that way.
- 58:43Speaker 8: Right?
- 58:44Speaker 1: That's lame. You're supposed to be like, no, no play.
- 58:49Speaker 5: Cool.
- 58:51Speaker 1: Don't text her for at least a week. Leave it alone.
- 58:56Speaker 2: Definitely don't like, Call her from the vacation that you're
- 59:01Speaker 2: taking tomorrow after your first date.
- 59:04Speaker 1: Just enjoy yourself. That's how I feel right now about
- 59:08Speaker 1: Braden Pagan.
- 59:09Speaker 2: Braden Pagan, I feel like you and I just went
- 59:14Speaker 2: on a first date and I want to marry you.
- 59:16Speaker 2: That was an unbelievable showcase. for his body control, his
- 59:24Speaker 2: route running, his sure handedness, his ability to run and
- 59:29Speaker 2: to turn the corner and his awareness on finding space
- 59:32Speaker 2: and getting up field. Yes, I know it was against Idaho,
- 59:37Speaker 2: but we, we saw this guy doing it at the
- 59:41Speaker 2: mountain West level last year for Utah state.
- 59:45Speaker 1: I think that this is the answer to the question.
- 59:48Speaker 2: A lot of Utah fans had last year when you
- 59:50Speaker 2: saw JJ Buchanan transferring out and leaving for Michigan.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. The bright spot in the past catching
- 59:59Speaker 1: game is gone. Now, what are we going to do? Well,
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: what you're going to do is you're going to go.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: Get the physical equivalent with more experience in Brayden pagan.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: Let's bleep and go. He's such a soft-spoken guy, too, OC.
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: When a couple of practices that I went up to,
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: I was able to be in the media scrum there.
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: He's very unassuming when he's talking with the media, at
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: the very least. Maybe he's different when he's talking with
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: his teammates. But, yeah, and then he just goes out
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: and balls out. You love guys like that.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Breaks a couple tackles on that end around, right? Again,
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: you don't want to overreact too much. But, Braden, I
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: would be the date you went on that would be like,
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: all right, it's been two days. I'm going to send
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: the text. I'm buying all the stock in that young man.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: All right, more on the text line.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: 7741 says....
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: How do you not get a yard on fourth and
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: one against Idaho?
- 1:01:08Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: That if you want to focus on the negative stuff,
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: that's obviously something that you are. Morgan's personality is he's
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: going to want to go for it on at least
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: half of those this year, the fourth and shorts analytics
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: be damned. He's going to want to say, yeah, you
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: know what? Let's make a point here. You better be
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: able to pin your ears back and make that point.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: You have the running back to do it. You should
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: have the offensive line to do it. That is the question.
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: I have no doubt that way. Sean Parker can navigate
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: the traffic. Can the offensive line get the push that
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: you need?
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: 77 41 also makes the point.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: Arkansas has one of the best defensive ends in the country.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Going to be a hard task on Saturday. Look, yes,
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: this was your practice game. You don't get easy matchups
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: moving forward. Even the stuff on paper that we say, hey,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: you're going to win, they're not easy matchups.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: A second caller. Well, technically a third caller today. I
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: love this.
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Edie from Salt Lake. Hello.
- 1:02:19Speaker 15: Hello. Can you hear me?
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: I can hear you. Welcome to the show. How are you?
- 1:02:25Speaker 15: Thank you, Greg. I listened to you after every game as.
- 1:02:29Speaker 14: We drive home and it was still on when I
- 1:02:31Speaker 14: got in the car and I thought, why not call?
- 1:02:33Speaker 15: I got some thoughts about the game.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: All right. Tell me what you think.
- 1:02:38Speaker 15: So I was thinking that we looked a little less than.
- 1:02:42Speaker 14: Great in the tight end position. No big plays from
- 1:02:45Speaker 14: the tight ends last night, which we've been used to
- 1:02:48Speaker 14: as a Utah football team.
- 1:02:49Speaker 15: And I missed that. So because we had time, we
- 1:02:52Speaker 15: started looking on the roster to see who we got.
- 1:02:54Speaker 15: And just wanted to know your thoughts about that. Looks
- 1:02:56Speaker 15: like we have a couple, but nothing that stood out.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: So Noah Benny did have his touchdown catch last night
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: on the– the kind of cross the body throwback from
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: bird Ficklin. So Noah came out, one of your tight
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: ends did score. That was a good play, but you're right.
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: Coming into the year, there was a question about whether
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: or not you had the same strength in the tight
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: end room that we're used to. And I think the,
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: the easy answer to that is no, because what we're,
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: what we've become accustomed to is NFL tight ends, Dalton Kincaid,
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Dallin Bentley, uh, Brant Keithy would have been an NFL
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: tight end or an NFL weapon had his health not
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: betrayed him. Uh, and right now we don't have that.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: As far as we know for this Utah football program,
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: that's something these guys are going to have to step up.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: Will Monty had a penalty on him last night. I
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: think he was the only penalty on the, in the
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: whole game. Of course, Hunter Andrews is listed as a
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: tight end, but he's more of like that Swiss army knife,
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: kind of like Keith.
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: He was. So it's still a question and you're right.
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: The tight end room is one of those things we're
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: going to be asking more of, but they did have
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: at least one great play last night.
- 1:04:10Speaker 14: Yes, they did.
- 1:04:11Speaker 15: That's true.
- 1:04:11Speaker 14: And you pointed out penalties that those couple of calls
- 1:04:14Speaker 14: that should have been pass interference that were not called
- 1:04:19Speaker 14: in our favor were ridiculous last night.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Well, the referees were bad last night.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: And ultimately I think that we can't, no Utah fan
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: can complain about what happened last night because you were
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: given possession back after a muff punt that should have
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: gone to Idaho. Monica Carvalho dropped that deep punt and
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: And Idaho had a clear recovery. And then they went
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: to the booth or they went to the replay and
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: the penalty was illegal touching on Idaho. The only way
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: that you can illegally touch the ball as a punt
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: team is by going out of bounds and then coming
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: back in bounds to touch it.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: That's not what happened.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: The guy who recovered the ball did not run all
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: the way out of bounds and then come back and
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: recover that ball. That was a, that was a rest
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: giving it back to you when you probably didn't deserve it.
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: So referees were really bad last night, including a couple
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: of missed pass interferences. But one of my great hopes
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: for this Utah football team and the Utah football fan
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: base this year is that officiating is not a theme
- 1:05:24Speaker 2: of conversation.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: That means you've got to stay out of close games.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: That means that you can't let BYU get a call
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: that keeps the game alive and then drive all the
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: way back down and score. Don't let the call, don't
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: let the officials be a determining outcome in the game.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: They weren't last night, even though they were terrible. Love
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: hearing from you. Thanks for the phone call.
- 1:05:50Speaker 9: 877-353-0700.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Darren says, I wish I'd love to call as you
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: know what, Darren, Darren, you could call it.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: After we'll, we'll do this on Monday.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: You could call in after you watch the BYU game
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: this weekend as our resident BYU fan.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: He he's great to always chime in on the Utah topics.
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: Cause he knows what we do here, home of the Utes.
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: But Darren, we love your Utes thoughts, but we, we let's,
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: let's get a BYU game under there.
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: You can give us your thoughts on, on your kooks. Okay.
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: Lance from Farmington. That's right. Lance, how are you?
- 1:06:31Speaker 6: What's up, Sean?
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: Man, feeling good. Utes are 1-0, 66-14. What do you
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: got for me?
- 1:06:39Speaker 16: Dude, so first off, huge fan, dude. Appreciate you being
- 1:06:42Speaker 16: on the radio. Love listening to your show. Second, I'm
- 1:06:48Speaker 16: not stoked on the arm from Devin. From Dan Pierre,
- 1:06:52Speaker 16: I would like to see You know, more accuracy. I
- 1:06:56Speaker 16: feel like the receivers have their guys beat three times
- 1:06:58Speaker 16: and three times it was under thrown. Like I want
- 1:07:01Speaker 16: to see that ball, get to them, get to them
- 1:07:02Speaker 16: on time and get to them with space to run.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: If you're, if you're Ryan Gunderson, if you're a quarterback's
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: coach talking to dev today, that is 100% of the
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: conversation because his game was pretty near perfect otherwise. maybe
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: he could have gotten down and protected his body a
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: little bit more, but it is absolutely something that Devin
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: needs to correct. And I don't think it's an arm
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: strength issue. And I don't think it's an accuracy issue.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: I think it's a making sure that he plants his
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: base and strides into the throw issue. You have, when
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: you're putting air under the ball, you have to drive
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: it from the ground.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: Don't throw it with your arm.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: He's got a strong enough arm that a lot of
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: these passes, these short and even intermediate balls, he can
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: kind of flick out there because he's running. Sometimes his
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: hips are not necessarily lined up. Sometimes the best quarterbacks
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: in the business, right? The guys that are a far
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: less athletic than Devin Dampier. The reason that the ball
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: doesn't drift on them like that doesn't sail or flutter
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: is because they are hyper, hyper disciplined with their footwork.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: Watch Tom Brady. Watch Peyton Manning.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Patrick Mahomes is not a good example of this because
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: he throws off.
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: Platform so much. Watch like Joe Burrow.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: A bunch of these guys, even Josh Allen, who's a
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: really great athlete, a bunch of these guys are hyper-focused
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: on where their feet are before they make those throws.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Jared Goff, the reason Jared Goff has quietly been one
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: of the more efficient quarterbacks in the league for a
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: decade plus now is is because they drive off the
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: ground into the throw. That's something that you have to
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: get Devin doing on every one of those deep throws.
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Like, can he get away with sailing one?
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: Sure.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: But why? You don't want to do it. And especially
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: against Idaho last night.
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Those throws were not under duress the same way. Some
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: of his throws this year are going to be under duress.
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: It was a beautiful game for him in a lot
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: of aspects. That was a concern and you're absolutely right.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: And thank you for calling Lance. Keep them coming.
- 1:09:16Speaker 7: 877-353-0700.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: This might be a new record for calls already. Oh, see,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: we love it. Derek texts to Derek.
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: The mailman says he used the open mic feature on
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: the app and hopefully we got it. Yeah, we do have,
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: we do have the open mic feature on the ESPN
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: 700 app where you can just leave us a voice
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: message on the open mic feature base.
- 1:09:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: We're going to grab that and play that as soon
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: as we can. Thank you, Derek.
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: Derek, the mailman that we two mailmen chiming in. Derek
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: is one of the regular mailman. And then we had
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: John from Ogden. So we, we love our delivery drivers, man.
- 1:09:51Speaker 4: We know you're out there in your cars all the
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: time and you got, and you're listening to us.
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: We really appreciate it. From last night's game. This is
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: from Cal on the text line. Best.
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: I like what I'm seeing from pagan worst seeing Idaho
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: drive down on the defense.
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: So here's, here's the thing, right? You don't, you don't
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: want as a.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Coaching staff to to go out there, to watch the
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: film and say, I know exactly what we're going to
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: focus on, but you also kind of do want that.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: You don't want there to be anything costly that killed you.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: You don't want to put stuff on film for next
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: week's opponent. And Arkansas is going to be watching this
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: same exact cut up tape and say, look at that.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: Idaho is able to drive down on these guys. What
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: do you think we can do to them?
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: You don't want to let them build their confidence that way.
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: But as a Utah coaching staff, for dev, the fluttering
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: throws for the entire defense. I promise you Colton Swan
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: has watched that drive eight to 10 times already. And
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: he's probably sitting there with a, you know, he's probably
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: got like some spur that he spins or what's the,
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: what's the fidget thing for a cowboy for Colton Swan.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: He doesn't chew tobacco. I don't think so.
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: He's got some spur in his hand spinning. Maybe he's
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: got his Lariat. Maybe he's got his rope.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: He's doing it. He's practicing his lasso. He's thrown.
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: He's just throwing that lasso over one of those fake
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: steer heads in his office. You know, he's got it
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: on a rolly chair and he's, he's heading that thing
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: while he's watching film. I don't know, but I promise
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: you Colton Swan looks at that drive and says, never
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: again in my life. Will a team like Idaho do
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: something like that to our defense?
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: He's kind of, kind of growling as he just out
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: of frustration as he's roping his steer in his office.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: And I'll bet you the visual and we'll get to
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: talk to Colton Swan, not next week, but the next,
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: we got Mac G next week, Mac G Kevin, but
- 1:11:50Speaker 2: given in coordinators corner, cannot wait to talk to him.
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: I'm going to, I'm going to really grill him. You're
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: old OC. Yes, that's right. Oh, C's OC.
- 1:12:01Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: I'll be like, Hey, Why don't you, why don't you
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: dial it up to Hunter Andrews a little bit more?
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: Hey, why didn't you play me more? Hey, why didn't,
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: why didn't.
- 1:12:12Speaker 2: She only multiple walk again? By the way, if I'm
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: not mistaken, he was in at D tackle late.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: In the game. Was he, do we see semi on
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: the defensive side? We never saw him on the defensive side.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: I'm I'm pretty sure we saw Sione on the defensive
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: side late in the game when, when the threes were playing.
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: And for anyone who might be, you know, you're just
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: tuning in now, the real football season's here for real.
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: First of all, welcome back. We appreciate you every year
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: or welcome for the first time. We appreciate you. But
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: if you're like looking at the roster and going, Hold on.
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: We got two tight ends who are 300 pounds or
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: almost 300 pounds. What's up with that? That's that rhino
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: we've been talking about. That's big boy Semmy. That's Sione.
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: Can you imagine being a defender looking at 300-pound tight.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Ends across from you? You got to tackle it at
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: some point. 877-353-0700 if you want to call in, if
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: you want to weigh in on the text line. The
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: Idaho drive from the Utah defensive perspective is going to
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: be watched and picked apart and drilled and practiced and
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: whatever mistake you made to allow that drive to happen.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: Every position group is culpable in this, by the way.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: And there were a couple of plays last night where
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: Idaho had a couple drops that would have been costly
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: plays for Utah. Now, nothing that would have changed the
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: outcome of the game. Like Jackson, Benny was in man
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: coverage a lot and they were trying to pick on him.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: So did Arkansas see something in there? They're like, Oh,
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: you know, there was a couple of throws that got
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: missed on this Jackson, Benny guy covering in the slot.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: We can win that matchup and our quarterback will put
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: that ball where it belongs. Like all of that stuff
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: is concerning. at least from a coaching perspective. I don't
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: think you need to worry about it as a fan
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: because they're going to get it cleaned up. And obviously
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: Benny's enough of an athlete and they're going to figure
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: all that stuff out. But there's definitely teachable moments from
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: that first game of the season. Michael Dawson on the
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: text line said, I love Morgan's willingness to keep his
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: fingers out of the offense. Worst part of the game
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: was Idaho's mismatch. Idaho's management of the D line.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Look, Hoopoo Cepulona said, Jai Moy, Carson Kalfusi.
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: I don't think we saw Sam Sula or if we did,
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: it was barely. I don't think we saw a lot
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: of jam Wallace. I need every one of those D
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: linemen to be better. I need every one of the
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: defensive ends to be better on the second touchdown for Idaho.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: It was Lance Holtzclaw that got contained, broke. Lance is
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: supposed to be a leader on this defense. He is
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: supposed to be a guy that you can rely on. Now,
- 1:15:02Speaker 2: I will give you a pass on a play or
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: two here and there. That was a touchdown play against
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: a 1AA team, man. You can't put that on film.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: We're nitpicking because that's what we do, but you got
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: to be careful about all these things.
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: 877-353-0700.
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: Who do we have from Brigham City?
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Dave from Brigham City. I was just up at old Maddox's.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: The Maddox Steakhouse last weekend. Maybe I saw Dave there.
- 1:15:28Speaker 5: Hi, Dave.
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: Hey, how you doing?
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: Doing all right. What do you have for me, sir?
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: Well, for starters, we missed that guy in the defensive
- 1:15:38Speaker 3: line that demands a double team on every play. We
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: don't have a true dog. that demand the double team
- 1:15:45Speaker 3: every time. The drive that they went down and scored,
- 1:15:48Speaker 3: they didn't even pack the box. They weren't even in
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: it like a goal-line stance. I don't know what somebody
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: was thinking out there, but, you know, you got three yards.
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: You better pack that box and pack it heavy, pack
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: it deep, fill every gap. It's like they went through
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: us like a cheese grater. I mean, it was bad.
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: Well, everyone was at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: It's just that Kinchelow kid, the former walk-on from Idaho,
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: he just.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: The guard won his battle, and the running back won
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: his battle, and it was, what, three yards, and he
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: was in.
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: You're right. You don't want to see that for Utah football.
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: You don't.
- 1:16:28Speaker 3: It wasn't... Yeah, you usually pack every hole, and, I mean,
- 1:16:32Speaker 3: you know, you go back to some of the greatest
- 1:16:34Speaker 3: goal-line stances ever that Utah's had.
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: I mean.
- 1:16:38Speaker 3: first and one, second and one, third and one, fourth
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: and one, and they stuff them every time. And it
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: all gets back to that one dog. You know, was
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: it Star-Lord DeLay? Was it Steve Fafita? We need someone
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: like that to step up and say, hey, I want
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: to be that man that demands a double team. And
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: that'll open up another gap to fill where you can
- 1:17:01Speaker 3: smack those people in the mouth. I mean, it just
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: seems like they just... Lacked a little effort, lacked a
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: little more size than we're used to. And I was
- 1:17:11Speaker 3: kind of disappointed in that, that the starters gave up
- 1:17:14Speaker 3: that drive. But other than that, overall, I'll give the
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: entire defense a B. Better than average, but they're going
- 1:17:24Speaker 3: to earn every win from here on out. And to
- 1:17:28Speaker 3: say I saw a playoff team last night, I don't
- 1:17:31Speaker 3: think I saw a playoff team last night. I didn't
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: see a Big 12 championship team last night. There's still
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: a lot of work to do. I mean, they're a
- 1:17:40Speaker 3: good team, but are they great?
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: Well, that's a great phone call.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: And the difference between good and great in college football
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: is often a pretty massive leap. So maybe great comes
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: against Arkansas. Maybe we don't see it until the BYU game.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: Maybe we don't see it at all this year, but
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: you're right. Last night was good. I don't, I don't
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: expect perfection. I There's plenty to bite onto and to
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: improve upon. I think the fans have been pretty realistic
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: about their expectations and about their.
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: Reaction.
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: I appreciate everyone's feedback. I think that even the people
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: who've weighed in, I mean, these are passionate Utah fans.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: All of you are right. I think that you're looking
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: at this the right way.
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: By being excited about a win impressed with the 66
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: point performance, but also saying that's not going to be
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: as easy next time around. If that happens against Idaho,
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: it's going to look a lot uglier against Houston, that
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: kind of a thing. One more text before we get
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: to a break here, 67.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: 78 bud from Lehigh looked like our D line really
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: struggled to get to the quarterback has to get better,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: especially against a team like Idaho.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: That I think was my biggest problem, but is pass
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: rush is so critically important for a defense to achieve.
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: As you get into more meaningful games, you have got
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: to pressure a quarterback. If you let some of these
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: guys and the, I know kid was good. He's a
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: solid quarterback. Joshua would How much eligibility does he have left?
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: He's a senior, right?
- 1:19:40Speaker 2: So Joshua would, we'll probably be on a better roster
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: next year. If he decides to stay in college football,
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: which he probably will, because you know, that's how it
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: goes when you're an FCS guy, he'll have his five
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: years to play five. I think we might see him
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: playing for a Mount West school or a Sunbelt school
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: or something like that next year.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: I think he's a solid, solid player.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: The, the inability to play, get to that guy and
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: to take that guy down, he missed some throws that
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: bear Bachmeier and Connor Wegman are going to make that
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: Noah Fafita is going to make. That's an alarm bell.
- 1:20:22Speaker 2: That's okay to ring in week one and also okay
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: to say, you know what? We could probably improve that
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: because again, you've got a whole new pass rush with
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: the exception of cash. Dylan, you're basically integrating all new guys.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: Elijah Ellis is going to be part of that, but
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: how much, right? And he's getting his real first, like
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: every down kind of run. Now acknowledge the problems, but
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: expect improvement. And when I say expect improvement, don't just
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: demand it and say it has to be better, but
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: trust that this coaching staff is going to make adjustments
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: and get these guys better. That's why they're paid the
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: big bucks. They're capable of doing it. And the players
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: are as well. You know what I'll say, OC?
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: There's plenty of things to nitpick about and totally valid
- 1:21:11Speaker 4: to do that. A lot of the things our listeners
- 1:21:14Speaker 4: have brought up are definitely valid. But I'll say this.
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: Wasn't it great to come out of a season opener
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: and not be talking about missed tackles? Not be talking about, man,
- 1:21:27Speaker 4: the tackling was terrible. I'm really concerned about that. It
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: feels like it's been a while since we've had that.
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: Maybe I'm overlooking the UCLA game last year or something
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: like that, but it's been a recent problem, and it
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: was really nice to see, aside from the Tillman missed
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: sack there, you had really solid tackling, and that was
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: not what the mistakes came from.
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: The tackling was, for the most part, good. The one
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: glaring missed tackle was like a really, really, really bad one.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: Really bad. But, you know, again, first game.
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: And someone's going to be probably running for that at practice.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: 877-353-0700.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: Keep it coming in. One o'clock, we'll have a little
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: bit more time. Daily Dump coming up next. And then
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: Lee Sterling to talk about some of the betting lines
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: of the opening weekend of college football. And then back
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: to your reactions from week one, your overreactions from week one,
- 1:22:26Speaker 2: your expectations after you have seen what this team actually
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: looks like.
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: On Utah's number one sports talk, and your home of

- 1:23:22Speaker 1: any kind of worry with the plumbing right now, the
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: truck with the duck can handle it all.
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: Make an appointment online. You don't even have to pick
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: up the phone by going to valleyplumbing.com, or you could
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: go 801-421-4222. This is, I can't believe we're talking about this.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: We brought it up in a Daily Dump a week ago.
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: Multiple sources are now reporting that the Utah Mammoth is
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: making a strong push to acquire Connor Hellebuck from the
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: Winnipeg Jets.
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: Let's go.
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: The Team USA goalie. Man, this is crazy because I
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: just liked a tweet from from the artist who paints
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: that most of the NHL masks and veggie is supposed
- 1:24:13Speaker 2: to be rolling out a new Utah mammoth mask this year.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: That's got like Tusky on it.
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: Basically you might have to get that thing repainted. If
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: this trade goes through, because we have no idea what's
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: being offered or what's being bandied back and forth, but
- 1:24:29Speaker 2: Winnipeg apparently interested in acquiring potentially, um, Veggie, they've also,
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: this report I'm looking at, says they would maybe, even
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: if the Mammoth don't want to offer Veggie, then maybe
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: Sebastian Cosa would be something that Winnipeg would be interested in. Also,
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: and you don't like this, Caleb Desnoyers and Tija Ginla
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: have been on Winnipeg's radar for a while, as has
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: Jack McBain, according to multiple reports.
- 1:25:03Speaker 12: So.
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: I don't like the terminology being used here.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: And you're going to, you're going to know why I could,
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: when I read it to you, but they said the
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: mammoth are big game hunting.
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: Remember when we heard that.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: Franchise that's owned by the same people, Speaker 2.
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: You know what, bill Armstrong, maybe don't talk to Danny
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: Ainge before you, before you leak something, just big game.
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: We don't, we don't like the term big game hunting
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: when Nothing came of that a few years ago.
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: And remember, like you had this, you have this really
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: significant pipeline of young talent coming out of Arizona and
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: other places for this Utah mammoth roster that the roster itself,
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: the NHL club roster is for the most part, pretty
- 1:25:52Speaker 2: young and considered to be on the rise. You just
- 1:25:57Speaker 2: gave up a lot of young talent to add Vincent
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: Trocheck to this roster. Is Hellebuck a guy that you're
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: looking at and saying, absolutely, he can be a foundational goaltender?
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: That's what you thought you had made a decision on
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: Veggie for that. Now, statistically, numbers-wise, Veggie actually was slightly
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: better than Hellebuck was last year, both in his win-loss
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: record and his goals against average. And by the way,
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: that was playing a lot more than Connor Hellebuck played.
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: Yeah, the win-loss makes a lot of sense because Mammoth
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: were a playoff team Winnipeg was not last year. But
- 1:26:38Speaker 4: I think I'm thrilled that they're absolutely entertaining this OC
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: because there's probably two weak spots as far as if
- 1:26:49Speaker 4: you're thinking of how can the Mammoth win the Stanley Cup, right?
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: There's probably two weak spots. And one of those weak spots,
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: all due respect to Veggie, is the goaltending. A lot
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: more stronger goaltending is what you need to have in
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: the playoffs, especially. And then the other one is the physicality.
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: I mean, Vegas out-physicaled the Mammoth in the playoffs. More hits,
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: especially earlier in the series. That's one of the reasons
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: I would not be thrilled if they had to give
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: up Jack McBain in a trade for Connor Hellbuck.
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: But also.
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: You got to be really careful, even though I think
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: that this is the right move to at least try
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: to get Connor Hellebuck because it addresses one of your
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: weak points on the team here in a major way.
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: Well, from a name value standpoint, yes, but Connor Hellebuck.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: The recency, like he wasn't as good last year. He
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: wasn't as good last year. He wasn't as good as
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: veggie was last year.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: It's true.
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: But two years ago, he was a Vesna trophy winner
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: in February. He won USA, the gold medal against the
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: best team in the world.
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: And you have to allow for the fact that maybe
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: he wasn't stellar for the jets last year because of
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: that partially could be it. And also because if you're
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: not happy somewhere, right? Like these are human beings. I
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: know professional athletes are supposed to rise above it, but
- 1:28:14Speaker 2: if you're no longer happy and if you're like a
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: really great player playing for a franchise, that's underperforming, it's very,
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: very difficult to go out there every single night and,
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: and give your best and be your very best.
- 1:28:27Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: And Hellebuck in his public statement, which just came out,
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: Hellebuck mentioned that like, look, I made this trade request
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: months and months ago, quietly.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: I wanted to handle this in house.
- 1:28:40Speaker 2: I wanted to be a dignified process for myself and
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: for the club. I didn't want it to be something
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: that grabbed headlines. Hellebuck was, he hasn't been happy in
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: Winnipeg for a long time. So if that affects his performance,
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: I mean, far be it for me to tell bill
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: Armstrong what to do at what, in my opinion, either
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: tied for, or second, most important position in all of
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: team sports, right? That's something that you have to get right.
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: If this team is going to move forward and be
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: Stanley cup contenders is getting it right. Acquiring Connor Hellebook.
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: And if so, at what cost is getting it right?
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: Staying the course with Corral, the Melka This is a big,
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: big decision for the Utah mammoth. And at first, when
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: this trade demand was made and a lot of these
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: people were putting out kind of like their most likely destinations,
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: it was Buffalo.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: Everyone's like, he's going to end up in Buffalo. He's
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: going to be with the Sabres.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: And now Utah is rapidly rising into this conversation as
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: like a most or second most likely landing spot for
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: Connor Hellebuck.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: We have mammoth hockey, preseason hockey in two weeks, by
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: the way.
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: Yeah, this is late in the game to be doing this, probably,
- 1:29:52Speaker 4: but you make a good point on a couple of
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: reasons why you might not want to pull the trigger
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: if you're Bill Armstrong. If it gets to the point
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: where you're like, yeah, we're probably going to trade him
- 1:30:04Speaker 4: to you guys. We just need to agree on what
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: you're going to send us. If that includes too many
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: of your young future goal-scoring stars like T.J. Ginla, for example,
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: Caleb Denoyer, That's probably a reason not to do it.
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: And again, let's just change his number. Yeah. He's 77 now.
- 1:30:27Speaker 4: Cause Paterka. Cause Paterka's gone. He was 77. So that's
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: a reason not to do it. Another reason not to
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: do it might be if you're going to hang, if
- 1:30:37Speaker 4: you hang on to veggie, what's that, what's that dynamic
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: going to be like, where the guy who's been your
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: guy to the point where you started him damn near
- 1:30:48Speaker 4: every game is now, okay, we still love you, but
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: you're not going to start very much for us. Cause
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: we got to get, we got a guy who think
- 1:30:55Speaker 4: is better. Is that going to negatively affect the, you know,
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: the chemistry thing that can be pretty delicate as we
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: know in, in all teams sports. So if you have
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: concerns about that, you maybe don't do it. And certainly
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: if you're giving up too many of your young talent to,
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: to address, yes, a very important need, but also, uh,
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: Are you sacrificing too much of your future? That's probably
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: a reason not to do it either. And there's risk because,
- 1:31:21Speaker 4: like you said, Hellbuck is not exactly coming off his
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: best season. But, man, I still love that they're in
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: the conversations and that they've rose to a lot of
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: the insiders, one of the likely destinations for him because
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: that is such a huge thing.
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: For the mammoths. If they're going to get further in
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: the playoffs, Speaker 0 7, 07, here's what I think.
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: I think veggie's not going anywhere because veggie has a
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: 10 team, no trade clause.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: That's in his contracts. You're not waving that.
- 1:31:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:31:55Speaker 2: And Winnipeg would be one of the teams that absolutely
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: is on the no trade clause, unless he has like
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: family there for some convoluted reason. You're not like you're
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: putting Winnipeg on the 10 team, no trade list, right?
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: Probably like they're on there. I would imagine it's not
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: public who is on there and who is not, but
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: he's on a five-year deal that he just signed in
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: March of 2025. He's, you know, about 5 million a year.
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: And the Melka was the most active goaltender in the
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: league last year. So that's another thing you have to
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: talk about. If you're in the front office with the
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: Utah mammoth right now, like, veggies goals against average and
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: hella bucks goals against average are separated by nine one
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: hundredths of a point, right? So it's apples to apples
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: for the most part, but also my guy played seven
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: more games. My guy was probably playing exhausted sometimes on
- 1:32:56Speaker 2: these long road trips. He, the veggie had to play
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: more than literally every other goaltender in the league, even
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: than hella buck. So if we take a little bit
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: of that pressure off of him and with Cosa, or
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: we take a little bit of that pressure off of
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: him by somehow getting Hellebuck in the same building and
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: then splitting it 50-50 or 60-40 or whatever else, maybe
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: we get more out of Edgy. I don't know how
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: it's going to work, man. But this is fascinating because
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: we are right around the corner. Regular season starts for
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: Utah in October. Let me pull up my mammoth. It's
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: about a month away. I think it is exactly a
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: month away, if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: Is it October 4th? Let's see.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: Let me go to, I'm just flexing on, on everybody
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: right now. Where's my tickets here. My tickets.
- 1:33:45Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: Oh, I was wrong. I was wrong. Thursday, October 1st.
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: We're less than a month. We are less than a
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: month away.
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: This is this late in the game to be making
- 1:33:56Speaker 4: this big of a move, but I think it could
- 1:33:58Speaker 4: end up being a big difference.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: For the mammoth and them getting further in the playoffs.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: That's all for the daily dump. We take a break.
- 1:34:05Speaker 2: Lee Sterling, the number one handicapper in the business gives
- 1:34:08Speaker 2: us the lines for this weekend for entertainment purposes.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: Only it's the Sean O'Connell show on ESPN, 700 92,
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: one FM.
- 1:34:23Speaker 10: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 1:34:26Speaker 10: best inside of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 1:34:30Speaker 10: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: Oh, our long nightmare is over.
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: Football is back, and that means we get to check
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: in with the best in the business from Paramount Sports.
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: His name is Lee Sterling, and for entertainment purposes, he
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: will guide us through the lines on a college football weekend.
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: Lee Sterling, good friend of the show. How are you, sir?
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: I'm great. I am terrific. First time in a long time,
- 1:35:00Speaker 5: took a long vacation, went to Norway. You ever been there?
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: I have never been to Norway. I've been to Sweden,
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: but not Norway.
- 1:35:06Speaker 5: Put it on your bucket list. The fjords are incredible
- 1:35:10Speaker 5: with the waterfalls and the glaciers and the people. That's
- 1:35:13Speaker 5: a country that has figured it out. I didn't know
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: they say They ended up finding oil offshore in 69,
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: and they just keep reinventing and just keep taking that money.
- 1:35:27Speaker 5: They're making it and investing it, and every person gets
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: a nice return every year, a nice paycheck, and they
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: get free health care. There's no homeless. The only problem, well,
- 1:35:38Speaker 5: there's two problems. It gets cold in the winter, and.
- 1:35:42Speaker 5: You're six hours ahead. Following sports is practically impossible.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: That is tough. But shout out to Norway. Maybe I'll
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: have to pay a visit sooner than later.
- 1:35:52Speaker 2: Man, great to have football back, Lee, and excited to
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: have you back on.
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: Let's dive right into the lines.
- 1:35:59Speaker 2: Coming up for this weekend, uh, Oregon Boise state and
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: the ducks are big time favorites here. This is not
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: in most people's opinion, the Boise state of old that
- 1:36:10Speaker 2: might be more capable of.
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: Pulling off an upset like this one. It's also not
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: the Oregon of old. This is one of the top
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: payrolls in college football. How do you see it?
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: Well, here's the problem with Boise. They just don't have
- 1:36:21Speaker 5: the money. They can't keep their players. They're able to
- 1:36:24Speaker 5: keep their quarterback, but.
- 1:36:25Speaker 6: Not much else.
- 1:36:26Speaker 5: So, uh, Last time they played Oregon, they had to scramble.
- 1:36:31Speaker 5: The Ducks had to score with 10 minutes to go
- 1:36:35Speaker 5: on a 100-yard kickoff return to tie that game up
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: and then win it on the last play of the game.
- 1:36:43Speaker 5: I think this is going to be a different game
- 1:36:46Speaker 5: than two years ago. So the only difference is they
- 1:36:49Speaker 5: have two new coordinators, and that actually might help them
- 1:36:52Speaker 5: in game planning. I don't think Boise knows what to
- 1:36:55Speaker 5: expect here, and any of those kids who are around
- 1:36:58Speaker 5: two years ago, there's a lot of them, they're going
- 1:37:00Speaker 5: to be forewarned, and I think they're going to want
- 1:37:02Speaker 5: to lay one here on Boise. So Boise switching conferences
- 1:37:07Speaker 5: went to a much weaker conference. I don't like the
- 1:37:10Speaker 5: switch here. I think the Ducks' role here behind Dante Moore,
- 1:37:14Speaker 5: sometimes you've got to lay it if you want to
- 1:37:16Speaker 5: play it here. Ducks, 45-17.
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: Do you believe Oregon is a national championship contender because
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: it's championship or bust for them from here on out
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: as long as Uncle Phil's writing checks on this payroll?
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: Is this a year where they're national championship contenders for you?
- 1:37:33Speaker 5: It's the only year that they have a chance, but
- 1:37:35Speaker 5: I still think that there's a couple other teams that
- 1:37:38Speaker 5: are just better than them, and they just have the
- 1:37:41Speaker 5: DNA to pull it off. But how great would it
- 1:37:44Speaker 5: be if the Ducks faced Miami and Mario faces his
- 1:37:50Speaker 5: old team? That would be something.
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: That'd be awesome.
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: The old master versus the successor in Dan Lanning trying
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: to get it done up there.
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: That'd be a fun storyline. All right, we're the home
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: of the Utes.
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: We will see the Aggies of Utah State, not this
- 1:38:05Speaker 2: coming weekend, but the following for week three. Utah State
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: are 12.5-point favorites against Idaho State, a big sky team,
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: much like the one Utah played last night. The Aggies
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: lost their starting quarterback, Bryson Barnes. He's in the Canadian
- 1:38:22Speaker 2: Football League now. They're favorites here, but not by much.
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: How do you see it?
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: Well, I still think that there's a talent discrepancy here.
- 1:38:30Speaker 5: And I think that Hill said, I think that he's
- 1:38:35Speaker 5: going to be good enough for them. Here's a guy that,
- 1:38:37Speaker 5: you know, can run and throw the football. He's played
- 1:38:40Speaker 5: against good competition, you know, being at BYU. And I
- 1:38:44Speaker 5: like some of their transfers. You don't know them. I mean,
- 1:38:47Speaker 5: they're not big names, but some of these guys– I
- 1:38:50Speaker 5: think they did some really good scouting. They played a
- 1:38:53Speaker 5: lower-level school, especially on defense. Comic colleges like St. Thomas, Mississippi,
- 1:38:58Speaker 5: Valley State, and also, like I said, they always get
- 1:39:03Speaker 5: guys from BYU looking to get more playing time. So
- 1:39:06Speaker 5: I like Utah State here. I think the home field
- 1:39:09Speaker 5: advantage is big here. And also, I think their special
- 1:39:13Speaker 5: teams will be improved over last year, where they're only
- 1:39:16Speaker 5: ranking 113th out of 134 teams. So they get those
- 1:39:20Speaker 5: return games going with Jacobs, Javon Jacobs. They're going to
- 1:39:25Speaker 5: be tough to beat. I like the Aggies here. I
- 1:39:28Speaker 5: think they win in cover here, 35 to 20.
- 1:39:32Speaker 2: Maybe one of the headline games of this opening weekend,
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: which lacks, if I'm being honest, which lacks like big
- 1:39:37Speaker 2: time premier matchups, but from a brand value standpoint and
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: certainly from a headlines, a recent headline standpoint, Clemson LSU
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: carries a bit of intrigue to it. LSU for, as
- 1:39:51Speaker 2: far as we know, is going to have a couple
- 1:39:52Speaker 2: of former NFL guys on the roster after winning that
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: case yesterday, they are ranked Clemson is not at least
- 1:40:00Speaker 2: not in the preseason LSU, 10 point favorites.
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: How does this one play out?
- 1:40:05Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:40:06Speaker 5: And I think that, you know, dabble, you know, he
- 1:40:08Speaker 5: might have an expiration date on his stay here in Clemson.
- 1:40:13Speaker 5: So you watched him last year. I mean, everything that
- 1:40:16Speaker 5: could go wrong, went wrong. His quarterback, Kate Klubnick, who,
- 1:40:20Speaker 5: you know, there for four years, everyone thought after the
- 1:40:23Speaker 5: freshman year, he's going to be the next coming, never
- 1:40:25Speaker 5: got it done. They finished seven and six. He goes
- 1:40:28Speaker 5: to the Jets training camp and looks great. So probably
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: wasn't the kid, probably the coaching and getting him to
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: play at a high level. They even lost four of
- 1:40:36Speaker 5: the top five defensive linemen, not able to get the
- 1:40:39Speaker 5: best out of those guys. There was projections two years
- 1:40:42Speaker 5: ago that three or four of those guys were going
- 1:40:44Speaker 5: to be top 10 picks. LSU had trouble running the
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: football last year, just 104 rushing yards per game. They've
- 1:40:52Speaker 5: got to pick that up, only 10 rushing touchdowns. They
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: ranked 118th out of 134 teams running the football. But,
- 1:40:58Speaker 5: you know, you get the best offensive tackle, maybe a
- 1:41:01Speaker 5: kid that goes in the first round from Colorado, another
- 1:41:04Speaker 5: couple guys there, a couple receivers in the transfer portal
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: that will open up the passing game. And Sam Levitt,
- 1:41:11Speaker 5: when he's healthy, and he is right now, he may
- 1:41:13Speaker 5: not be in four or five weeks. They're going to
- 1:41:15Speaker 5: be a team that is going to be tough to
- 1:41:17Speaker 5: reckon with. So I know Dabo would like to finish
- 1:41:21Speaker 5: strong here, maybe have a big season, move on to
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: Alabama as alma mater, but I don't think it's going
- 1:41:28Speaker 5: to be happening. This place is going to be rocking.
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: They say they might blow the top off the stadium
- 1:41:33Speaker 5: here on Saturday night. LSU rolls here, LSU Tigers, 30
- 1:41:38Speaker 5: Clemson Tigers, 17.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: We certainly haven't heard the last Lee of this like
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: big picture stuff with pro players coming back in and LSU,
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: they're the ones who are willing to die on this hill.
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: The sec is like, nah, we're not going to let
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: this happen. So I mean, is this going to be
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: a storyline that plays out through the season or are
- 1:41:56Speaker 2: we going to shelve it until after it's done?
- 1:41:59Speaker 5: I think it's not going to play out for more
- 1:42:01Speaker 5: than a week, 10 days, and then they'll have to
- 1:42:04Speaker 5: decide which way to go. But, I mean, LSU is
- 1:42:07Speaker 5: kind of caught in the middle. They're saying they need
- 1:42:10Speaker 5: to play the kids, and the conference is saying, no,
- 1:42:12Speaker 5: you don't. So, you know, maybe we need to open
- 1:42:14Speaker 5: up a new TV station. You know, you have court TV.
- 1:42:18Speaker 5: Call it sports court TV. There's at least one case
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: going on every week everyone wants to see that involves sports.
- 1:42:25Speaker 5: There's at least one athlete or ex-athlete. you know, that,
- 1:42:28Speaker 5: that has a court case is arrested. Can you imagine
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: you got, you know, guys on the scene, here we go.
- 1:42:34Speaker 5: We got a Georgia offensive lineman pulled over for 85
- 1:42:38Speaker 5: and a 25, you know, show the footage there. How
- 1:42:41Speaker 5: great would that be?
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: Wow.
- 1:42:44Speaker 2: No limit on the stuff we could get in this
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: year of college football, obviously.
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: High expectations for BYU as they start their season under
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: Kalani Satake after a little, minor athletic department turmoil in
- 1:42:59Speaker 2: the off season. I don't think anything that affects players,
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: but certainly a distraction for Kalani and some of the
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: coaches with that whole Brian Santiago situation. They are massive
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: 51 and a half point favorites against Utah tech, who
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: is still a pretty recent addition to division one football.
- 1:43:17Speaker 2: Can BYU cover on a line this fat?
- 1:43:21Speaker 5: It seems like one of the few schools that's able
- 1:43:23Speaker 5: to play some of these schools in Utah tough is
- 1:43:26Speaker 5: Weber State. Isn't that where you went to school also
- 1:43:28Speaker 5: to finish your career?
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: Weber State, yes. Utah Tech, though? Utah Tech.
- 1:43:32Speaker 6: No, no.
- 1:43:34Speaker 5: Utah Tech, I mean, the talent. I was watching their
- 1:43:36Speaker 5: game last week. They just don't have the players right now. And,
- 1:43:40Speaker 5: you know, it just depends on how long the BYU
- 1:43:43Speaker 5: keeps their starters in. They have Arizona next week, which
- 1:43:46Speaker 5: is a big game. So I think they're going to
- 1:43:48Speaker 5: keep their starters in at least three quarters. And I
- 1:43:51Speaker 5: just think Utah Tech, I mean, they should be playing
- 1:43:54Speaker 5: probably NAIA Division III ball. They're just not at this
- 1:43:58Speaker 5: level just yet. fear Bachmeier and also LJ Martin should
- 1:44:03Speaker 5: have huge games. And I think they're going to try
- 1:44:05Speaker 5: to get some of the young receivers, you know, and,
- 1:44:08Speaker 5: and some of the transfer guys, some action. So I
- 1:44:11Speaker 5: like BYU. I think they win this game here, 65
- 1:44:14Speaker 5: to six.
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: BYU covers according to Lee Sterling on a 51 and
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: a half line paramount sports.com. What else can our people
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: know about what you're doing as we start off this
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: college football season?
- 1:44:30Speaker 5: So this is what I want to do today. I
- 1:44:33Speaker 5: know people listen. I know people like to have some
- 1:44:36Speaker 5: fun and would like to win. I'm going to give
- 1:44:39Speaker 5: them three free selections for tonight. I have three plays
- 1:44:43Speaker 5: I like tonight, and caution, nothing. So we've won 32
- 1:44:47Speaker 5: out of 33 seasons. I'm a former college quarterback. This
- 1:44:51Speaker 5: is all I do, study tapes. I think I'm able
- 1:44:54Speaker 5: to figure some things out that most people can't. We've
- 1:44:57Speaker 5: won six of the last seven Super Bowls, six of
- 1:44:59Speaker 5: the last seven national championship games. You want to get
- 1:45:02Speaker 5: three free plays, go to paramountsports.com where it says join
- 1:45:06Speaker 5: our mailing list on the homepage, paramountsports.com. Join our mailing list.
- 1:45:11Speaker 5: Just fill that out. Within 30 minutes, we will email
- 1:45:15Speaker 5: you the three plays for tonight. I know if I
- 1:45:17Speaker 5: win for you, go 2-1 or 3-0 and put some
- 1:45:20Speaker 5: jingle in your pockets. You're going to want to consider
- 1:45:22Speaker 5: me for the future.
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: Also, the UFC.
- 1:45:25Speaker 5: We've won 13 of the last 15 cards and got robbed,
- 1:45:30Speaker 5: I thought, last week. Did you watch the Jenkins-Woodson fight?
- 1:45:34Speaker 7: I didn't.
- 1:45:35Speaker 13: Okay.
- 1:45:37Speaker 5: It was clearly one, one out of the judges and the,
- 1:45:41Speaker 5: I think it's the 15 ring side of observers. They
- 1:45:43Speaker 5: had it one, one watched the last round of that fight.
- 1:45:47Speaker 5: We had Jenkins plus one 25. I thought he dominated
- 1:45:50Speaker 5: the round. I don't think woods had landed six, seven
- 1:45:53Speaker 5: punches the entire round. He shakes his head, you know, no,
- 1:45:57Speaker 5: every time he gets hit. But, uh, I thought it
- 1:45:59Speaker 5: was one of the biggest robberies. One of the judges,
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: I've never seen his name before who judged the fight
- 1:46:05Speaker 5: at a, out of Shanghai. But, you know, I guess
- 1:46:07Speaker 5: they pick up some guys. They don't want to fly people,
- 1:46:09Speaker 5: you know, halfway around the world. But I thought it
- 1:46:13Speaker 5: was a really bad decision, cost us a winning card.
- 1:46:15Speaker 5: But looking to get back on track, we do that well.
- 1:46:19Speaker 5: And we have a super saver card, five selections, including
- 1:46:22Speaker 5: a max wager, 40 and 50 unit selection, just $ 25.
- 1:46:27Speaker 5: Check it all out, paramountsports.com.
- 1:46:30Speaker 2: Lee, we got less than a month until the UFC
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: returns tonight. to Salt Lake city and no announced main
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: event yet.
- 1:46:37Speaker 5: Yeah, I know. Crazy. They got it. They got to
- 1:46:39Speaker 5: figure it out.
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: Lee, you're the man. I'm glad we're doing this again
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: this year. Appreciate you joining us. We'll talk again next week.
- 1:46:47Speaker 7: Thanks.
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: See you.

- 1:47:19Speaker 2: there it's like his handicapper on the ufc getting it
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: right big thanks to lee for hopping on with us

- 1:47:41Speaker 2: against Idaho. We're marching towards an airing of grievances that
- 1:47:45Speaker 2: will come in 25 minutes. And some other big stuff happened,
- 1:47:50Speaker 2: at least for the Big 12 last night.
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: We'll talk about that. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.

- 1:48:22Speaker 2: a Friday. Let me know how you feel, which you

- 1:48:29Speaker 1: Give me your airing of grievances. Mine is one that
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: you're going to hear me.
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: Give a Probably multiple times every football season. It's broadcaster related,
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: and I feel like I can do it because if
- 1:48:41Speaker 2: I make the same mistake that other people were making
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: on the broadcast last night, I want you to call
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: me out for it. But 877-353-0700. When you're ready to
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: air your grievances, we'll read them on the air. You
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: can call and air it yourself. The Utah football victory
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: last night, 66-14 over Idaho. with a 600-plus point offensive,
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: not point, 600-plus yard offensive explosion.
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: There are people that.
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: Didn't like the fact that Kevin McGiven went deep enough
- 1:49:15Speaker 2: into his bag to show those weird formations and versatility.
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: Here's what we know, okay?
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: If you listen to Dishing with Dev, he mentioned that
- 1:49:28Speaker 2: there are 200 and some odd plays in the Utah
- 1:49:32Speaker 2: playbook that they have practiced, that they have already installed,
- 1:49:36Speaker 2: that they have tried, that they have workshopped over 200
- 1:49:40Speaker 2: plays in the Utah playbook that they have actually run
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: in practice as of now.
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: Sounds like a lot. Oh, see, is that a lot?
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: It's a lot of plays. Okay. Like they didn't know.
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: They weren't exactly conservative with the play calling offensively. There
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: wasn't a ton of like hyper trickeration either. There actually
- 1:50:02Speaker 2: wasn't all that much motion like to try to give
- 1:50:07Speaker 2: the defense different looks. There was formational stuff, but there
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: wasn't a huge amount of motion being run in that game.
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: Here's the thing. Utah ran 49 run plays last night.
- 1:50:21Speaker 2: And 17 pass plays that last night, that is 66
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: offensive snaps.
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: It's a pretty typical numbers.
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: What you're going to get in a non-overtime college football game,
- 1:50:32Speaker 2: anywhere from high fifties to low eighties is a normal range,
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: depending on how fast your offense goes, whether you huddle,
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: whether you don't huddle with your opponent huddles, doesn't huddle
- 1:50:44Speaker 2: winning time of possession versus losing it, et cetera.
- 1:50:47Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:50:48Speaker 2: If you run in the mid-60s of plays and already
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: you've installed and practiced 200-plus, I don't think you went
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: too far into your bag.
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: I don't think that you showed too much.
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: And also, you can't keep people happy because the previous
- 1:51:11Speaker 2: staff was.
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: Always given crap for not showing anything. right to vanilla.
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: This offense is vanilla again.
- 1:51:20Speaker 2: Nobody woke up today and said, wow, that Utah offense
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: was really vanilla last night.
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: And it could be just Kevin McGiven proven that point
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: to himself and to everyone else. Like just wait, watch
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: what we're starting with. It's gotta be fun people.
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: He is, he has the offensive weapons the skill position
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: players to do things that he has never done before
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: in any of his previous stops. I have stressed this
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: so many times at Weber state at San Jose state
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: at Utah state. If your school ends in state, you
- 1:51:55Speaker 2: don't have the same kind of weapons that Kevin McGivern
- 1:51:59Speaker 2: is going to be using and going to be deploying
- 1:52:02Speaker 2: in this offense. Offensive line, it's going to be on
- 1:52:06Speaker 2: you to make sure that that creativity is rewarded rather
- 1:52:11Speaker 2: than punished because some of that can take a little
- 1:52:14Speaker 2: bit longer of a play to develop. Some of it
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: can be a little bit harder to block.
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: Some of the, if there is a downside to quarterback athleticism, then.
- 1:52:27Speaker 2: You got to worry about, you know, like do the
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: offensive line know where your quarterback is? If there is
- 1:52:32Speaker 2: a negative downside, aspect to having a bird Ficklin and
- 1:52:36Speaker 2: a Devon damp here.
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: That's it.
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: But 8 7 7 3 5 3 0 700.
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: Love to hear from you.
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: If you want to tell me your best and worst
- 1:52:44Speaker 2: of the game last night, if you want to air
- 1:52:46Speaker 2: your grievances, we can, is this Alec from vineyard?
- 1:52:50Speaker 8: This is Hey, OC.
- 1:52:53Speaker 6: What's up?
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: I'm great. How are you?
- 1:52:56Speaker 8: Doing good. It's been a while since I've been able
- 1:52:58Speaker 8: to give you an update on the whole sauna, you know,
- 1:53:01Speaker 8: grievances that we've shared multiple times.
- 1:53:02Speaker 1: Yes, I need to know what's been going on with
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: your sauna life.
- 1:53:07Speaker 8: So we've, you know, we've gone over a lot of things,
- 1:53:10Speaker 8: whether it's been couples, you know, engaging in PDA and,
- 1:53:15Speaker 8: you know, gentlemen taking business calls and whatnot.
- 1:53:18Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:53:18Speaker 8: The latest update is, and I didn't even know this
- 1:53:21Speaker 8: was still a thing. Maybe I'm just, I guess, too
- 1:53:23Speaker 8: young to think that it was still going on. I
- 1:53:28Speaker 8: have been recruited at least two separate times to sell
- 1:53:31Speaker 8: Cutco knives in the sauna over the past couple weeks.
- 1:53:35Speaker 7: What?
- 1:53:37Speaker 8: And not only that, but real estate as well. But
- 1:53:39Speaker 8: real estate is not as big of a deal because
- 1:53:41Speaker 8: I'm a real estate agent, so I can kind of
- 1:53:42Speaker 8: respect it, even though it's annoying. But the Cutco knives,
- 1:53:45Speaker 8: that blew my mind. I thought that was a 90s thing.
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: Now, I had.
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: So I got my teeth done. I got veneers on
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: my top teeth years ago.
- 1:53:55Speaker 4: And.
- 1:53:56Speaker 2: as a gift of appreciation from my phenomenal dentist office,
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: I guess for spending so much money, they gave me
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: a Cutco carving knife with like the fork. And I
- 1:54:08Speaker 2: was like, Oh man, I remember when these things were
- 1:54:10Speaker 2: a big deal. I remember like thinking back in the
- 1:54:13Speaker 2: day in my childhood, probably because of infomercials that a
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: Cutco knife was like the peak of luxury. And now
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: I'm a proud owner of one. Thanks to my dentist.
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: Shout out Tyler Williams. But yeah, I didn't know that
- 1:54:25Speaker 2: people were still doing that as like a profession.
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: I thought you could just go online and grab them.
- 1:54:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:54:32Speaker 8: And they're still presenting it from what I remember in
- 1:54:34Speaker 8: the exact same way where it's like, Hey, I haven't,
- 1:54:37Speaker 8: they'll be super subtle about it and really vague where
- 1:54:39Speaker 8: they'll say, I have a great business opportunity. If you're
- 1:54:43Speaker 8: looking for a side hustle or another stream of income
- 1:54:46Speaker 8: and you'll let you ask, what is it? And they'll say, well,
- 1:54:49Speaker 8: I'd love to meet with you. And then, you know,
- 1:54:52Speaker 8: it continue on. You find out, Oh, Okay.
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: You want to meet with me about Cutco knives?
- 1:54:58Speaker 5: Come on.
- 1:54:58Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:55:00Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: I'm assuming this is a grievance.
- 1:55:04Speaker 8: This is a grievance just because, you know, again, I
- 1:55:06Speaker 8: love the sauna, and it's a place to relax and
- 1:55:08Speaker 8: unwind and detox and, you know. get all the stresses
- 1:55:13Speaker 8: from the night before the Utah football game where they
- 1:55:15Speaker 8: didn't look perfect and we're all expecting them to. And,
- 1:55:18Speaker 8: you know, we, we try to nitpick every little thing
- 1:55:21Speaker 8: that we can. And yeah, I get a sales pitch
- 1:55:23Speaker 8: about cut co knives and ask you if I want
- 1:55:25Speaker 8: to sell real estate. So, you know, I'm just, I'm
- 1:55:27Speaker 8: in the worst place too. I'm in the South Jordan
- 1:55:29Speaker 8: Eos as we speak right now. And it's just, this
- 1:55:31Speaker 8: is the worst place for it.
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: So, and you're like, dude, I'm already selling real estate.
- 1:55:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:55:37Speaker 8: I'd like to hear their pitch though, to see how
- 1:55:39Speaker 8: bad mine is compared to theirs.
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: Well, give us your best and worst of the game
- 1:55:44Speaker 2: last night since we have you here.
- 1:55:46Speaker 8: Yeah, so, I mean, I noticed it a couple different
- 1:55:50Speaker 8: times throughout the game. My biggest grievance is on the
- 1:55:54Speaker 8: offensive lines and defensive lines. I know that we're switching
- 1:55:58Speaker 8: guys back and forth on the offensive line to see
- 1:56:00Speaker 8: what combination works best, but it seemed like we weren't–
- 1:56:05Speaker 8: great at protection, and Dan Peter took some hits that
- 1:56:08Speaker 8: I didn't love to see. It just gave me flashbacks
- 1:56:10Speaker 8: of Cam getting drilled. Defensively, though, there were a couple
- 1:56:14Speaker 8: different times where our defensive end seemed to over-pursue and
- 1:56:18Speaker 8: let the quarterback get out of the pocket really easy,
- 1:56:21Speaker 8: and that, I just, I know we were blitzing a lot,
- 1:56:25Speaker 8: but I wasn't thrilled with I guess gap integrity on
- 1:56:30Speaker 8: the defensive line and, you know, containing the quarterback. So,
- 1:56:33Speaker 8: you know, if we do have to face another more
- 1:56:35Speaker 8: mobile quarterback this season, I don't know how good Arkansas is,
- 1:56:39Speaker 8: but that was, that was concerning to say the least.
- 1:56:43Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: Great, great concerns and an awesome grievance again, sauna related
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: Alex entire life revolves around these issues in the sauna,
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: or at least that's the picture in my mind. I'm
- 1:56:53Speaker 2: sure he's got a fully fleshed out, experience as a human,
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: but I think he just lives in a sauna.
- 1:56:58Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:56:59Speaker 4: I think he's just always in the sauna. Just like that's,
- 1:57:02Speaker 4: that's my sleep. Sleeps in a sauna. Just like you
- 1:57:05Speaker 4: and I, we live in the studio.
- 1:57:07Speaker 9: Yes.
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: We don't ever leave.
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: You see that kid, by the way, that went viral
- 1:57:10Speaker 2: last week. Cause he lives in a pond in India. No,
- 1:57:13Speaker 2: like a hippopotamus. He like lives in a pond. He's
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: like a 16 year old kid. Who's got some weird
- 1:57:19Speaker 2: skin condition. So he just lives in a pond.
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: Okay. It helps his, it helps his skin.
- 1:57:25Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:57:26Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: You do you, I guess. Well, I mean, who knows?
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: You never know. You never know.
- 1:57:31Speaker 2: Maybe that's why he has the skin condition. You never
- 1:57:34Speaker 2: know his stories out of India. That's a good point.
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: If I'm talking about, like, where would I want to
- 1:57:40Speaker 2: live if I was going to live in a pond? Like,
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: standing water. I've never been to India, to be fair.
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: But standing water in that country would probably be the
- 1:57:49Speaker 2: last place I would.
- 1:57:49Speaker 4: Want to live in a pond. Just, again, based on
- 1:57:54Speaker 4: just things we've heard. Not that either of us have experienced. Look,
- 1:57:59Speaker 4: everyone's guilty of peeing in the pool. If you live
- 1:58:03Speaker 4: in the pond. I don't know what you're talking about,
- 1:58:05Speaker 4: If you, if you live in the pond or you're
- 1:58:07Speaker 4: also peeing in the pond, like why wouldn't you be
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: like you jump in the lake to go wakeboarding, right?
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: We all know what you're doing.
- 1:58:14Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: You're, you're surfing in the ocean. Come on. Nothing against it.
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: But if you live in that body of water, are
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: you still doing it? I don't know, man. You're going
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: to your neighbor's pond. 8 7 7 3 5 3
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: 0 700.
- 1:58:29Speaker 10: Yes.
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: Grievances will be aired sooner than later. Yeah. We let,
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: I mean, that's our guy, Alex. It's a preemptive grievance.
- 1:58:35Speaker 4: And he had, he called because he had thoughts in
- 1:58:37Speaker 4: the game and he's like, maybe I can sneak a grievance.
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: And I'm like, absolutely.
- 1:58:42Speaker 2: It was kind of a grievance on, on something football
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: related to the over pursuit, right?
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: You had at least one jumps to mind.
- 1:58:49Speaker 2: Where Elijah Ellis over pursued, got himself a little off balance.
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: saw one where Cyrus Polo did not, I wouldn't say
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: he over pursued, but he didn't come to balance to
- 1:59:02Speaker 2: finish the play.
- 1:59:03Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:59:04Speaker 2: And this is one of the most difficult things about
- 1:59:07Speaker 2: the dynamic that exists in football camp, because you cannot
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: tackle the quarterback, not the best quarterback. And in Utah's case,
- 1:59:20Speaker 2: They weren't tackling the best two quarterbacks. Bird Ficklin wasn't
- 1:59:23Speaker 2: getting touched in live drills and neither was Devin Dampier.
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: Maybe Brandon Rose got sacked a bunch in camp. And
- 1:59:29Speaker 2: maybe they teed off on Brandon. But even then, like
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: you don't even sack your scout team quarterback because that
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: guy's valuable.
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Yeah. You need him to,
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: you need him to be. the, you need to be
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: bear Bachmeier later in the season.
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: So Speaker 2, I don't know exactly how they're managing
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: it at Utah camp right now, but it is one
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: of the difficult things about the integration of live tackling
- 1:59:49Speaker 2: and of live hitting because the way that Colton Swan
- 1:59:54Speaker 2: was dialing up pressure and the way that these guys
- 1:59:56Speaker 2: give them some credit, the way these guys were timing
- 1:59:58Speaker 2: their rushes and timing their blitzes. they were doing a
- 2:00:02Speaker 2: really good job of being like full speed at the
- 2:00:05Speaker 2: line of scrimmage or close to full speed right at
- 2:00:07Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage as the ball is snapped.
- 2:00:10Speaker 16: Right.
- 2:00:10Speaker 2: So they're just like hurtling into the backfield. And a
- 2:00:13Speaker 2: couple of times we saw it with, uh, Elijah Ellis.
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: We saw it with Cyrus Polo in the game last night.
- 2:00:17Speaker 2: You saw it on the break contain where Lance holds claw.
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: He just pinched down really, really hard. And he just
- 2:00:25Speaker 2: got the tackle again. This is an experienced offensive line
- 2:00:29Speaker 2: for Idaho. The tackles like, okay, cool. You win this battle.
- 2:00:32Speaker 2: We're crashing down to the center because he knew his
- 2:00:34Speaker 2: quarterback was rolling, right? He's like, you don't want to
- 2:00:37Speaker 2: have contained.
- 2:00:37Speaker 7: Cool.
- 2:00:38Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: And that led to a touchdown. So how do you
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: fix that?
- 2:00:45Speaker 2: Well, the way you fix it is potentially a bad
- 2:00:50Speaker 2: day for the scout team or the tackling dummies at
- 2:00:52Speaker 2: the very least those quarterbacks, because this coaching staff is
- 2:00:57Speaker 2: going to address it.
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: They're going to say, Hey, Well-timed blitz, beautiful, wonderful stuff.
- 2:01:03Speaker 2: If you don't finish this play, it is a bust
- 2:01:06Speaker 2: on the back end because I have taken you out
- 2:01:08Speaker 2: of coverage. I have taken you out of being that
- 2:01:11Speaker 2: second layer or that third layer of defense. And now
- 2:01:14Speaker 2: there's a massive vacancy that you just occupied five seconds ago.
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: they're running with the ball in that green grass, right?
- 2:01:24Speaker 2: So you have to come to balance. You have to
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: finish the play. You have to tackle. You have to
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: wrap up. This is something that will be managed and
- 2:01:34Speaker 2: will be taken care of by this coaching staff.
- 2:01:37Speaker 1: I promise you that. And okay.
- 2:01:38Speaker 2: Brechterfield right now has to worry about his guys getting
- 2:01:41Speaker 2: there first. If they start missing, then they're going to
- 2:01:45Speaker 2: be like, all right, we're finishing tackles.
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: Sorry, Brandon Rose.
- 2:01:48Speaker 2: Or they'll just call out whoever the Murph on the
- 2:01:51Speaker 2: team is this week. And they'll be like, dude, you're
- 2:01:53Speaker 2: just going to stand at the backfield and we're going
- 2:01:55Speaker 2: to do one-on-one pass rush.
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: And when they get to you, they're going to hurt you.
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: And you're just like, all right, fine. This sucks.
- 2:02:03Speaker 2: It it's a good observation by Alec though, that all
- 2:02:07Speaker 2: of those blitzes and all of that manufactured pressure and
- 2:02:10Speaker 2: those stunts and those twists, those are great because they
- 2:02:14Speaker 2: give the offensive line something to question on film and
- 2:02:16Speaker 2: Arkansas is looking at it and just being like, Okay,
- 2:02:19Speaker 2: so this Kalfusi kid who's 6'6 and 300 pounds, he
- 2:02:23Speaker 2: can move like this, and if he's coming across my
- 2:02:25Speaker 2: face and the other guy's crashing down here, this could
- 2:02:29Speaker 2: be really problematic for me.
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: Well, it's only.
- 2:02:30Speaker 2: Problematic if he then finishes the play. That is the
- 2:02:35Speaker 2: whole thing with blitzes. A blitz that is unfinished is
- 2:02:42Speaker 2: a liability in coverage. It is an open spot in
- 2:02:46Speaker 2: the defense. It is a place where better teams with
- 2:02:50Speaker 2: better players, better wide receivers, better tight ends. They are
- 2:02:55Speaker 2: given the option on their routes to occupy vacant space, right?
- 2:03:02Speaker 2: They read the blitz just like the quarterback does. And
- 2:03:04Speaker 2: if they don't read it themselves, the quarterback sees the
- 2:03:07Speaker 2: pressure coming and he makes a little signal or he
- 2:03:10Speaker 2: shouts out to the guy and that changes his route.
- 2:03:13Speaker 1: And then what do you have?
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: You have a drag route. Your linebackers are coming. We
- 2:03:16Speaker 2: saw this from Colton Swan last night, right?
- 2:03:19Speaker 1: Back in the box. Here comes Trey Reynolds. Here comes
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: John Hall.
- 2:03:23Speaker 5: All right.
- 2:03:24Speaker 2: Hey, tight end, here's what you're going to do. You're
- 2:03:26Speaker 2: going to flash like you're helping the tackle, and then
- 2:03:29Speaker 2: you're just going to leak out on a little drag
- 2:03:30Speaker 2: route five yards behind the defensive line.
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: And that's now, if you.
- 2:03:35Speaker 2: Don't finish the play, that is now a big game
- 2:03:38Speaker 2: as the blitzer. Or what's the other alternative there? Your
- 2:03:42Speaker 2: pass rush, if it's not getting home, where do your
- 2:03:45Speaker 2: hands have to be? Carson Kalfousi, You're tall, like tree,
- 2:03:51Speaker 2: get your hands in the air. If you're not winning
- 2:03:53Speaker 2: that battle, if you're not getting to the quarterback, put
- 2:03:56Speaker 2: your hands in the air and bat a few passes down.
- 2:03:59Speaker 2: That's honestly, that's the only problem with Jai Moa being
- 2:04:02Speaker 2: the size that he is. Cause at five 11, you're
- 2:04:05Speaker 2: not batting a lot of balls down. Even if your
- 2:04:07Speaker 2: pass rushes it almost there. And we've had guys in
- 2:04:12Speaker 2: Utah footballs pass that were really, really good. They were
- 2:04:14Speaker 2: like defensive backs at the line of scrimmage. Guys that
- 2:04:18Speaker 2: just had this weird knack for batting the ball out
- 2:04:20Speaker 2: of the air. We didn't see necessarily a ton of
- 2:04:24Speaker 2: that last night, but I am not hitting a panic
- 2:04:27Speaker 2: button on anything we saw from Utah football. The overwhelming
- 2:04:31Speaker 2: positives were new coaching staff, a lot of new players,
- 2:04:35Speaker 2: new head coach going out and playing kind of how
- 2:04:38Speaker 2: we expected them to play against inferior competition. I also
- 2:04:43Speaker 2: believe that Arkansas is inferior competition. I don't think Arkansas
- 2:04:47Speaker 2: is inferior athletics. I think that those guys are just
- 2:04:52Speaker 2: as big, fast and strong. And in a lot of positions,
- 2:04:54Speaker 2: they're probably bigger, faster and stronger than Utah. So technique
- 2:04:58Speaker 2: and discipline are going to have to win the day.
- 2:05:00Speaker 2: We will find out what Utah has got in those
- 2:05:03Speaker 2: realms much more next week.
- 2:05:07Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:05:08Speaker 2: Let's take another quick break here. The airing of grievances
- 2:05:11Speaker 2: is coming. And it's coming in hot. A reminder to
- 2:05:15Speaker 2: all of you out there that maybe you're this person
- 2:05:19Speaker 2: that when you see an accident or you hear about
- 2:05:22Speaker 2: an accident, you're like, you know what?
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: I'm just going to eat that.
- 2:05:27Speaker 2: I'm going to trust that my insurance company is going
- 2:05:30Speaker 2: to treat me right, is going to handle this the
- 2:05:32Speaker 2: right way. You don't have to trust that, okay? It's
- 2:05:35Speaker 2: probably not a good idea for you to trust that.
- 2:05:37Speaker 2: I understand that there are a lot of us who
- 2:05:39Speaker 2: don't want to be litigious, as we like to say.
- 2:05:42Speaker 2: Your first reaction to a bad thing happening to you
- 2:05:46Speaker 2: because of doctor malpractice or because of somebody not maintaining
- 2:05:51Speaker 2: your apartment building the right way, your first reaction is not, well,
- 2:05:54Speaker 2: who can I sue over this? You don't deserve to
- 2:05:58Speaker 2: have that bad thing happen to you. You do deserve
- 2:06:00Speaker 2: to have an advocate representing your interest and trying to
- 2:06:03Speaker 2: make sure you get compensation if you deserve it. And
- 2:06:07Speaker 2: the beauty with the advocates is consultations are available 24-7, 365. Also,
- 2:06:13Speaker 2: you don't come out of pocket. So that second barrier
- 2:06:18Speaker 2: to entry, right? That, oh, I don't want to, I
- 2:06:20Speaker 2: don't have to pay for this right now.
- 2:06:22Speaker 1: Well, guess what? You don't come out of pocket.
- 2:06:24Speaker 2: They are motivated to get you the maximum amount in
- 2:06:28Speaker 2: a settlement because they take a percentage of your settlement
- 2:06:32Speaker 2: only after they have actually earned that for you. You're
- 2:06:36Speaker 2: not coming out of pocket paying upfront. You will become
- 2:06:40Speaker 2: partners with the advocates in making sure that you get
- 2:06:43Speaker 2: what you deserve. And that's why they're so motivated to
- 2:06:45Speaker 2: do a great job. And when you compare the advocates
- 2:06:49Speaker 2: to other personal injury attorneys around the country and around
- 2:06:53Speaker 2: the state, You can find the records of how much
- 2:06:56Speaker 2: the settlements are. You can find the records of the
- 2:06:59Speaker 2: compensation that they are able to earn for their clients.
- 2:07:03Speaker 2: And the numbers tell you that the advocates are the
- 2:07:05Speaker 2: best place for you to go. 801-355-5550, utahadvocates.com. Again, available
- 2:07:13Speaker 2: all the time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- 2:07:18Speaker 2: Motorcycle accident, bicycling accident, car accident, slip and fall, something
- 2:07:24Speaker 2: falls on you because of poor maintenance, whatever it is,
- 2:07:29Speaker 2: just give them a call and let them know, hey,
- 2:07:31Speaker 2: this bad thing happened to me. I need somebody else
- 2:07:34Speaker 2: to handle it for me. I'm going to focus on
- 2:07:36Speaker 2: my injury. I'm going to focus on my recovery. I'm
- 2:07:38Speaker 2: going to focus on getting myself right.
- 2:07:40Speaker 1: They will focus on getting you the compensation that you deserve.
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: 801-355-5550 or utahadvocates.com.
- 2:07:46Speaker 4: Let them know OC sent you. And then you mentioned
- 2:07:52Speaker 4: the free consultation, OC. Even if you have a friend
- 2:07:56Speaker 4: or family member who has an accident, not in the car.
- 2:07:59Speaker 4: maybe they're walking around, get hurt, and you're just like,
- 2:08:03Speaker 4: I wonder if that's a case. You can call the
- 2:08:06Speaker 4: advocates and find out real quick.
- 2:08:08Speaker 9: 801-355-5550.
- 2:08:09Speaker 4: The free consultation is there for those specific reasons where
- 2:08:15Speaker 4: you're like, I wonder if I can get more money
- 2:08:17Speaker 4: from this than I would if I didn't call the advocates.
- 2:08:20Speaker 2: Give the advocates a call. The answer is yes, you
- 2:08:21Speaker 2: probably can. All right, get your grievances ready. Air them next.

- 2:09:29Speaker 2: and Monday, we've got games. And that's just college, baby.
- 2:09:32Speaker 2: Friday night, lights happening around the valley as well with
- 2:09:36Speaker 2: high school games.
- 2:09:39Speaker 1: We might actually talk about that.
- 2:09:41Speaker 2: There's another great list of the best high school mascots
- 2:09:44Speaker 2: from every state. And I like to bring those up
- 2:09:47Speaker 2: because while my beloved high school alma mater, Jordan is
- 2:09:50Speaker 2: not winning a lot of games right now. They do
- 2:09:52Speaker 2: have one of the best names in the business.
- 2:09:55Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 2:09:55Speaker 2: Air your grievances now on the Sean O'Connell show. James,
- 2:10:02Speaker 2: do you have a grievance you need to get off
- 2:10:03Speaker 2: your chest? Oh, James is talking to a caller right now.
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: I like that. Okay. I got one for you.
- 2:10:16Speaker 2: It's tried and true. It's an old, it's an old
- 2:10:20Speaker 2: standby for me. I'll give you mine here in a second.
- 2:10:26Speaker 2: I want to make sure we get to our callers
- 2:10:27Speaker 2: in a timely manner. Sam from Taylorsville.
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: How are you, Sam?
- 2:10:34Speaker 6: I'm great. How are you?
- 2:10:35Speaker 2: I'm awesome, man. We've gotten like six calls today. I'm
- 2:10:38Speaker 2: really excited about it.
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: How are you?
- 2:10:41Speaker 6: Good stuff. I'm glad to be a part of it.
- 2:10:44Speaker 6: First and foremost, this is the best segment anyone's ever
- 2:10:46Speaker 6: thought of in local radio. Let's over the grievances. Let's
- 2:10:50Speaker 6: get some issues out in the open. Let's talk about
- 2:10:54Speaker 6: it as opposed to bottling them up. My grievance today
- 2:10:58Speaker 6: is with people who it's your job to know things,
- 2:11:03Speaker 6: but you never do know things. For example, I own
- 2:11:06Speaker 6: a small business. I've been waiting on a product delivery
- 2:11:11Speaker 6: for eight weeks now. And I get an update that, okay,
- 2:11:17Speaker 6: this is delayed. Well, I've waited eight weeks. I kind
- 2:11:21Speaker 6: of need an answer. It's important to the client. And
- 2:11:25Speaker 6: the email that I get from the logistics sales manager,
- 2:11:30Speaker 6: or excuse me, the logistics and supply chain manager says,
- 2:11:38Speaker 6: I don't know. It's literally your job to know. Who
- 2:11:42Speaker 6: else is going to know if not you? So grievance
- 2:11:45Speaker 6: today with people who should know things but never seem
- 2:11:50Speaker 6: to and can never give you the right answer.
- 2:11:52Speaker 1: You know what?
- 2:11:53Speaker 2: That is a deep frustration that has been shared at
- 2:11:56Speaker 2: some point by all of us. So we will echo
- 2:11:58Speaker 2: the grievance with great enthusiasm. If it is your job
- 2:12:02Speaker 2: to know the thing, know the thing. That's incredibly frustrating.
- 2:12:07Speaker 1: My dad.
- 2:12:09Speaker 6: My dad always had a saying with us growing up,
- 2:12:13Speaker 6: and I need to echo that now. You can tell
- 2:12:16Speaker 6: me it's none of my business. You can tell me
- 2:12:18Speaker 6: to go to hell, but don't tell me you don't know,
- 2:12:21Speaker 6: especially when it's your job to know.
- 2:12:24Speaker 2: I'm going to steal that. Shout out to your dad
- 2:12:26Speaker 2: for having a great catchphrase like that one.
- 2:12:30Speaker 6: He's got plenty of them, so cite your source. He's
- 2:12:33Speaker 6: a great dude. His name is Craig.
- 2:12:35Speaker 1: All right, Craig. You're the man. Thanks for the phone call.
- 2:12:41Speaker 1: We have Spencer from Salt Lake. Is that correct? Is
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: this Spencer Fano?
- 2:12:48Speaker 13: No, this is not Spencer Fano.
- 2:12:49Speaker 8: I wish I was, though.
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: You know what?
- 2:12:53Speaker 2: I didn't think you'd be. You'd be from Cleveland right
- 2:12:55Speaker 2: now anyway, so that's all right. How are you, Spencer?
- 2:12:59Speaker 8: I'm great, man.
- 2:12:59Speaker 13: Three-day weekend coming up. Grievance airing. First time calling in,
- 2:13:03Speaker 13: so all things are great.
- 2:13:04Speaker 1: What's your grievance?
- 2:13:06Speaker 13: So my grievance is with, uh, I think Alex was
- 2:13:09Speaker 13: calling about the Cutco reps, uh, pestering him in the sauna,
- 2:13:14Speaker 13: but I've just got a similar grievance about MLMs. I
- 2:13:17Speaker 13: used to bartend when I lived in Bozeman, Montana, and
- 2:13:20Speaker 13: there was quite the contingency of, uh, Amway, uh, I
- 2:13:24Speaker 13: guess workers up there in Bozeman and they would come
- 2:13:28Speaker 13: in constantly. Uh, and it's, it's one thing to try your,
- 2:13:32Speaker 13: try it out on like a bar customer or, you know,
- 2:13:35Speaker 13: people around you, but to prey on the young college
- 2:13:39Speaker 13: students working at the bar who have to talk to
- 2:13:42Speaker 13: you while we're taking your order and stuff. I just
- 2:13:44Speaker 13: think that's so lame to, uh, like put you, put
- 2:13:47Speaker 13: you through that. And then I feel like they'd always
- 2:13:49Speaker 13: tip that. And anyways, they were in there like every
- 2:13:52Speaker 13: Friday night trying to get people to join.
- 2:13:54Speaker 1: And it's, I don't know.
- 2:13:55Speaker 13: It was just always such a, such a burden for us.
- 2:13:58Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: You know what? And guess what? If you're trying to
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: convey great wealth, you can't be a bad tipper. All right.
- 2:14:05Speaker 2: Amway people, if you're trying to, if you're trying to
- 2:14:07Speaker 2: sell these young folks on, Hey, this is great.
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: You're going to make a killing at this.
- 2:14:12Speaker 2: You better drop a hundy down on a couple of
- 2:14:15Speaker 2: drinks because that conveys success. If you're like, I want
- 2:14:19Speaker 2: to tip you 5%, you're not selling your business anyway.
- 2:14:23Speaker 1: So that's a double grievance, Spencer.
- 2:14:26Speaker 2: The bad tipping is never forgivable, but especially when you're
- 2:14:30Speaker 2: trying to convince someone that, hey, if you do this,
- 2:14:33Speaker 2: it'll bring you great financial success, and then you don't
- 2:14:36Speaker 2: convey that?
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: Come on.
- 2:14:38Speaker 6: Yeah, just terrible.
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: Great grievance. Thank you for calling in. On the text line, Derek,
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: on the text line, grievance.
- 2:14:46Speaker 2: If I go to a store advertising a holiday-type sale
- 2:14:49Speaker 2: and I still have to drop more than $ 1, 000 to
- 2:14:51Speaker 2: get anything, it doesn't help me.
- 2:14:52Speaker 1: I'm poor. Well, you don't have to buy the stuff, Derek.
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: Maybe you do.
- 2:14:58Speaker 2: If it's like tires that you have to buy, you
- 2:15:00Speaker 2: got to have tires on your car. I guess nowadays
- 2:15:03Speaker 2: we have to have a cell phone. So if you're
- 2:15:06Speaker 2: having a Labor Day sale, if you're a business owner
- 2:15:08Speaker 2: out there and you're having a Labor Day sale, do
- 2:15:10Speaker 2: our guy Derek a favor and have it be a
- 2:15:12Speaker 2: meaningful sale.
- 2:15:13Speaker 1: All right. Grievance eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero 700. Okay.
- 2:15:19Speaker 1: So the grievance I was going to.
- 2:15:20Speaker 2: Air, and I know this is the case when you're
- 2:15:25Speaker 2: on like the Ocho and you get the Z team
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: broadcasting partnership. I just want there to be a minimum requirement.
- 2:15:38Speaker 2: If you are calling games West of the Mississippi river,
- 2:15:43Speaker 2: Cause now every school West of the Mississippi has a
- 2:15:48Speaker 2: pretty healthy contingent of.
- 2:15:51Speaker 1: Polynesian football players.
- 2:15:53Speaker 2: I need for every single broadcaster to demonstrate the ability
- 2:15:59Speaker 2: to get, it doesn't have to be a hundred percent.
- 2:16:02Speaker 1: Okay. Because we, I've been around it my whole life.
- 2:16:05Speaker 1: I'm sure I still get some wrong.
- 2:16:08Speaker 2: I need you to have at least like an 80%
- 2:16:11Speaker 2: score on pronouncing Polynesian names correctly, or I need you
- 2:16:16Speaker 2: to not be put on a game that features the
- 2:16:18Speaker 2: university of Utah or BYU or Hawaii or Southern Utah
- 2:16:24Speaker 2: or Cal or any other Oregon or any other team
- 2:16:28Speaker 2: that for decades now has been filling out their rosters
- 2:16:31Speaker 2: with Samoans and Tongans and even the occasional Fijian. If
- 2:16:36Speaker 2: you can't pronounce the names, Don't be on the broadcast.
- 2:16:42Speaker 2: I'm not even Polynesian and it drives me crazy.
- 2:16:45Speaker 4: I mean, at least get some reasonable facsimile to what
- 2:16:49Speaker 4: the actual pronunciation is too. Like, I think people can,
- 2:16:54Speaker 4: I think it's forgivable to like, not quite pronounce one
- 2:16:59Speaker 4: of the vowels, right? But you gotta, you gotta get,
- 2:17:02Speaker 4: you gotta make it sound close enough to it too often.
- 2:17:05Speaker 1: That's not the case.
- 2:17:06Speaker 2: Every school is, gives a pronunciation guide for the names.
- 2:17:10Speaker 1: It's true.
- 2:17:11Speaker 2: Every single school has a pronunciation guide in the, the
- 2:17:16Speaker 2: game program. And now most of them, most schools, especially
- 2:17:20Speaker 2: if you're on a broadcast team or whatever, most schools
- 2:17:23Speaker 2: have an audio resource where you can go to their
- 2:17:27Speaker 2: website and you can click The little, like, ear link
- 2:17:32Speaker 2: next to a name, and it pronounces the name. And
- 2:17:35Speaker 2: it's usually the player pronouncing their own name. And sometimes,
- 2:17:38Speaker 2: by the way, the phonetic spelling in the pronunciation guide
- 2:17:41Speaker 2: is incorrect. That's happened at the University of Utah in
- 2:17:44Speaker 2: years past.
- 2:17:45Speaker 1: Here's the thing.
- 2:17:47Speaker 2: You don't have to be a hundred percent, but you
- 2:17:48Speaker 2: gotta be whatever it is. Uh, Polynesians, please text in.
- 2:17:52Speaker 2: Is it 75%? Is that like at least a respectable threshold?
- 2:17:56Speaker 2: Is it 80? I think 80 would be my minimum requirement.
- 2:17:59Speaker 2: That's like a B minus grade. If you're a B
- 2:18:01Speaker 2: minus Polynesian pronunciation guy, you can call a Utah game.
- 2:18:06Speaker 2: I want you to be an a and But if
- 2:18:08Speaker 2: you're at least a B minus, great. If you're like
- 2:18:10Speaker 2: the guys on the broadcast last night and you're a
- 2:18:12Speaker 2: D plus, you should not be calling these games. It
- 2:18:16Speaker 2: is a bare minimum requirement. I have to pronounce a
- 2:18:20Speaker 2: bunch of weird Eastern European and Russian names. And we
- 2:18:24Speaker 2: do the work to make sure we get them right.
- 2:18:26Speaker 2: And what, even the guys, when you ask them, Hey,
- 2:18:29Speaker 2: like say your name for me, like, no, no, no,
- 2:18:31Speaker 2: just pronounce it. It's you can't really say it right
- 2:18:33Speaker 2: in English. No, please let me get your name right,
- 2:18:37Speaker 2: at least. I'll make a bunch of other mistakes, but
- 2:18:40Speaker 2: I want to show the athlete the respect of getting
- 2:18:43Speaker 2: the name right. It should be ubiquitous across college football.
- 2:18:47Speaker 2: Even the big-name guys screw it up all the time. Yeah,
- 2:18:54Speaker 2: it's kind of a cardinal sin in the industry, right?
- 2:18:57Speaker 2: Getting the player's name wrong. But the other, again.
- 2:19:04Speaker 9: Not getting it 100% the way that the player and
- 2:19:09Speaker 9: their family says it, if it's a complicated name like
- 2:19:13Speaker 9: some of these Polynesian names, the example that you bring up, R.
- 2:19:16Speaker 1: It's okay. Just get it close, okay?
- 2:19:21Speaker 4: And what's troubling is that a lot of these broadcasters,
- 2:19:25Speaker 4: and I wasn't watching the game with the sound on
- 2:19:27Speaker 4: last night, so I can't speak to last night like
- 2:19:30Speaker 4: you can, O.C., but a lot of these broadcasters don't
- 2:19:34Speaker 4: even get it close.
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: And it's like, man, what have you been doing?
- 2:19:38Speaker 4: Have you not been practicing the, the, the most basic
- 2:19:42Speaker 4: part of your job for this game, which is to
- 2:19:44Speaker 4: get names, right?
- 2:19:48Speaker 2: It just feels like it just like, and again, it
- 2:19:53Speaker 2: doesn't affect me personally, but I feel very personal about
- 2:19:56Speaker 2: it because I'm like, I would love to be calling
- 2:19:58Speaker 2: these games, right? I would love to have an opportunity
- 2:20:01Speaker 2: to call a game, even like a low profile game.
- 2:20:05Speaker 1: Like Utah, Idaho was last night, right?
- 2:20:07Speaker 4: Beyond the ESPN plus or the, it was on ESPN.
- 2:20:11Speaker 4: You last night, even those games.
- 2:20:12Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 2:20:13Speaker 1: Like that. That's a, that's a dream, dream, dream job.
- 2:20:15Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:20:17Speaker 2: If you have that, whatever your dream job is, and
- 2:20:20Speaker 2: then you don't do the legwork necessary to show respect
- 2:20:25Speaker 2: to the people involved. I feel like that is something
- 2:20:28Speaker 2: that is deserving of me airing a grievance. And I've
- 2:20:31Speaker 2: done it every single year of my life. Just like,
- 2:20:34Speaker 2: why don't you get these guys' names right?
- 2:20:36Speaker 1: And unfortunately, you've done it every year because people keep
- 2:20:39Speaker 1: getting them wrong.
- 2:20:41Speaker 2: Matiaki Hilu last night. Semai Taolonga.
- 2:20:47Speaker 10: All right.
- 2:20:50Speaker 4: Shout out to Jeff Schwartz, Spencer Fanel.
- 2:20:53Speaker 2: My guy, my guy, it took, it took Bingham Fano
- 2:20:58Speaker 2: took dad being on Twitter and saying, Hey guys, it's
- 2:21:01Speaker 2: Fano Fano.
- 2:21:04Speaker 1: Anyway, that's my grievance. What do you have, James?
- 2:21:08Speaker 5: Man.
- 2:21:08Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe I've just, maybe I've just had
- 2:21:12Speaker 1: a really good. couple of weeks. I'm not thinking of
- 2:21:15Speaker 1: much right now. Okay.
- 2:21:16Speaker 2: Here's one that a couple of people have brought in,
- 2:21:18Speaker 2: not necessarily as a grievance, but some people put it
- 2:21:21Speaker 2: in their best and the worst part of the game
- 2:21:23Speaker 2: last night. The new, the new entrance song for the team,
- 2:21:28Speaker 2: the music playing at rice cycle stadium.
- 2:21:30Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 2:21:30Speaker 1: What was the journey song? It said it's a journey.
- 2:21:33Speaker 1: What is separate ways?
- 2:21:34Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:21:36Speaker 1: Being in the studio.
- 2:21:37Speaker 4: Oh, see, I, I miss out on some of these
- 2:21:40Speaker 4: things that people are like, oh, we all saw that.
- 2:21:42Speaker 1: It sucked or awesome. Do we have that in the computer?
- 2:21:45Speaker 1: Can you pull that up? Is that every way I'll
- 2:21:46Speaker 1: pull it up. Let's see if we can just, okay.
- 2:21:49Speaker 2: So for the folks that don't get to go to
- 2:21:51Speaker 2: these games or haven't gotten to go to these games.
- 2:21:53Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:21:54Speaker 2: And you're just got close your eyes as James pulls
- 2:21:56Speaker 2: this up and it's a, it's a Thursday in September.
- 2:22:02Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:22:02Speaker 1: It's a beautiful, perfect weather night.
- 2:22:06Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:22:08Speaker 2: The guys that you're starting to see some motion in
- 2:22:11Speaker 2: the tunnel. You're starting to see the fans kind of
- 2:22:14Speaker 2: have to rearrange themselves. The swoop on the motorcycle thing
- 2:22:18Speaker 2: is happening.
- 2:22:20Speaker 1: Spirit team is out there creating the tunnel that the
- 2:22:23Speaker 1: players are going to run through.
- 2:22:25Speaker 2: And this is the song that starts playing. Your reaction
- 2:22:28Speaker 2: to that is apparently for a lot of people who've
- 2:22:31Speaker 2: been texting today.
- 2:22:34Speaker 1: Not great. I mean, Here's what I'll say for separate ways.
- 2:22:39Speaker 1: The beginning is it's upbeat.
- 2:22:44Speaker 4: It's got a nice base to it, right? It's not
- 2:22:48Speaker 4: exactly a journey love ballad here, but it is very
- 2:22:54Speaker 4: footloose compared to what you're looking for for a football
- 2:22:58Speaker 4: game in 2026.
- 2:23:02Speaker 1: In 2006?
- 2:23:03Speaker 6: 1996?
- 2:23:04Speaker 1: This might have been the jam, but 2026? I don't know.
- 2:23:06Speaker 1: This was released in 1983. Yeah, it was released then.
- 2:23:10Speaker 1: A great year, by the way. Great year. Good Things
- 2:23:12Speaker 1: came out in 1983. Songs have longevity.
- 2:23:15Speaker 4: That's why I say probably 10 to 20 years after
- 2:23:18Speaker 4: release date, it was probably still an anthem jam, right?
- 2:23:23Speaker 4: Not sure it is anymore in 2026. Four-year walkout song. Also,
- 2:23:29Speaker 4: I think I might agree with that. So I love
- 2:23:32Speaker 4: the jam itself. This is like the sound.
- 2:23:35Speaker 1: It's a great song.
- 2:23:37Speaker 2: It reminds me of kind of like a little Street
- 2:23:39Speaker 2: Fighter video game.
- 2:23:41Speaker 1: Start to it like the synthesis.
- 2:23:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:23:43Speaker 1: You know, like the keyboard. Okay.
- 2:23:45Speaker 2: I like that. The lyrics are not real. It's like
- 2:23:51Speaker 2: a broken hearted love song.
- 2:23:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:23:54Speaker 3: And.
- 2:23:55Speaker 4: Maybe it's the falsetto voice that we, I mean, I'm
- 2:23:59Speaker 4: a journey fan.
- 2:24:00Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:24:01Speaker 4: I'm not, I'm not saying that, uh, that journey sounds
- 2:24:05Speaker 4: bad in any of their songs, but for a football game,
- 2:24:08Speaker 4: maybe it's also the falsetto voice. That's like, eh, once
- 2:24:11Speaker 4: the lyrics start, you're like, yeah, this isn't really pumping
- 2:24:13Speaker 4: me up. Uh, as much as like, if you're going
- 2:24:17Speaker 4: to go classic from similar era, like, I know that
- 2:24:22Speaker 4: Virginia tech is, Oh, has like co-opted this, but like
- 2:24:27Speaker 4: enter Sandman is the, is that kind of like, it's
- 2:24:30Speaker 4: that kind of a song that you want to do
- 2:24:31Speaker 4: if you're going to do a classic rock song.
- 2:24:33Speaker 2: So who are the, who are the rock bands from Utah?
- 2:24:37Speaker 2: Who are the, cause you can't use like the Osmonds
- 2:24:41Speaker 2: for obvious reasons.
- 2:24:43Speaker 4: And imagine dragon song. I'm about to hit somebody turn
- 2:24:47Speaker 4: on Donny Osmond.
- 2:24:51Speaker 1: Yeah, Imagine Dragons. I like Imagine Dragons. They're from Provo, though.
- 2:24:55Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 2:24:59Speaker 1: Have they not done Rice Eccles Stadium tours, though?
- 2:25:03Speaker 2: If you're airing a grievance, you don't want this to
- 2:25:06Speaker 2: be the song. This is brand new, okay? This is
- 2:25:08Speaker 2: the start of an era.
- 2:25:09Speaker 1: Yeah, but what song?
- 2:25:10Speaker 2: If it goes away, no one's going to miss it, probably.
- 2:25:13Speaker 2: So what song do you want the run out to be?
- 2:25:15Speaker 2: This is much like your... Major League Baseball walk-up song
- 2:25:20Speaker 2: that you only get five seconds of.
- 2:25:22Speaker 1: All right.
- 2:25:23Speaker 2: The walkout song for your fight. If you're in the
- 2:25:26Speaker 2: UFC or the PFL, right? That's what you want for
- 2:25:29Speaker 2: this Utah football team.
- 2:25:31Speaker 1: 877-353-0700.
- 2:25:31Speaker 2: If you don't want it to be journey, if you
- 2:25:36Speaker 2: don't like that choice being made, you got to have, it's,
- 2:25:39Speaker 2: it's kind of like when you say you got to
- 2:25:40Speaker 2: fire this coach.
- 2:25:41Speaker 1: Well, you only have to fire him if you know
- 2:25:42Speaker 1: who's better.
- 2:25:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:25:43Speaker 1: Cade's got a, on the text line, it's got a
- 2:25:46Speaker 1: good suggestion. tough to beat kickstart my heart. That's true.
- 2:25:51Speaker 1: That's I think better than separate ways for a football game.
- 2:25:55Speaker 2: I'm really curious to know how many players have any
- 2:26:02Speaker 2: connection to these songs we're talking about that are like,
- 2:26:05Speaker 2: that's the other thing.
- 2:26:06Speaker 1: Like, shouldn't it be a song? Yes.
- 2:26:09Speaker 4: You want it to connect to the 50,000 people in
- 2:26:12Speaker 4: the seats. But shouldn't it also, isn't it the most
- 2:26:18Speaker 4: important thing that the players connect to it, right? You
- 2:26:21Speaker 4: got to have something that 18 to early 20-year-olds connect
- 2:26:28Speaker 4: to and vast majority of the 50,000 plus people in
- 2:26:34Speaker 4: the stands connect to, which is not an easy thing
- 2:26:38Speaker 4: to do necessarily, but It's doable.
- 2:26:40Speaker 9: Journey.
- 2:26:41Speaker 1: Isn't that, I think it's doable.
- 2:26:42Speaker 2: Like I think any top 40 song from the last
- 2:26:45Speaker 2: like 15 years, players are going to know and hopefully
- 2:26:49Speaker 2: connect to, and the same thing with people in the
- 2:26:51Speaker 2: stands and look, I'm fine with journey being the choice.
- 2:26:56Speaker 2: I'm okay with it because it can be its own thing.
- 2:26:59Speaker 2: If you don't like it as a fan, this is
- 2:27:01Speaker 2: about the fan experience. Like the player and the fan
- 2:27:04Speaker 2: experience here is kind of what matters in that moment.
- 2:27:07Speaker 1: So write your state Senator or whatever. Bring it. No,
- 2:27:12Speaker 1: bring it here on the airing of grievances. Tell me
- 2:27:13Speaker 1: what song you want.
- 2:27:14Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:27:15Speaker 1: Why don't you send an email? Welcome. Welcome to the jungle.
- 2:27:19Speaker 2: I love both of those songs because I'm 43 years old.
- 2:27:23Speaker 2: I don't know if Devin damn peer feels connected to
- 2:27:25Speaker 2: those songs.
- 2:27:26Speaker 4: I feel like we got to have the leadership council
- 2:27:29Speaker 4: come up with songs that they like, and then fans
- 2:27:35Speaker 4: chime in in some way. And like, Oh, yeah. these
- 2:27:40Speaker 4: songs on that list absolutely here.
- 2:27:43Speaker 1: Comes the boom coming in on the text line from
- 2:27:47Speaker 1: Casey for whom the bell tolls from Cal look you
- 2:27:51Speaker 1: are speaking my language here I love all of these
- 2:27:55Speaker 1: suggestions I the show that the song that brings us
- 2:27:58Speaker 1: into the show every single day, which by the way,
- 2:28:01Speaker 1: did you, we've talked about this before, but it was
- 2:28:03Speaker 1: a long time ago.
- 2:28:04Speaker 2: This was done by accident. I did not tell James
- 2:28:07Speaker 2: what song to bring the show in with. It was
- 2:28:10Speaker 2: the song that we ran out onto the field to
- 2:28:13Speaker 2: in my beloved days of Jordan high beat digger football.
- 2:28:17Speaker 2: Thunderstruck by ACDC is the song that stirs my soul.
- 2:28:21Speaker 1: Get ready. Let's go. That was, and is the intro
- 2:28:24Speaker 1: song to the show. You did that on accident, James.
- 2:28:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:28:30Speaker 1: Yeah, we did.
- 2:28:30Speaker 4: It was that promo that we ran that thunderstruck underneath it.
- 2:28:36Speaker 4: And I was like, might as well have that be the,
- 2:28:40Speaker 4: let's just have that to start out the song. And
- 2:28:43Speaker 4: it stuck. You were like, that's the perfect song. And
- 2:28:48Speaker 4: some of those are timeless, right?
- 2:28:51Speaker 1: I think. And then, like I said, understand, man, that's
- 2:28:54Speaker 1: what I'm asking. Yeah.
- 2:28:55Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:28:55Speaker 2: Maybe because like the, we need to talk to ask
- 2:28:58Speaker 2: Devin next week on addition with death, the song for
- 2:29:00Speaker 2: me has to be something that the muss and the
- 2:29:04Speaker 2: players also love. They don't have to be the only
- 2:29:07Speaker 2: ones who love it. Like I don't want Kendrick Lamar
- 2:29:09Speaker 2: or something that the old folks are going to be.
- 2:29:11Speaker 1: Like, what is this crap?
- 2:29:12Speaker 4: But they need to be, they need to collaborate. And
- 2:29:15Speaker 4: then there needs to be another forum for you know,
- 2:29:18Speaker 4: everyone else who all the other season ticket holders to
- 2:29:20Speaker 4: be like, yeah, we're, we're down with these songs. These
- 2:29:23Speaker 4: songs definitely pumped me up before, before a football game.
- 2:29:27Speaker 2: Spencer says, is Thunderstruck slightly ruined for you since you
- 2:29:30Speaker 2: hear it every day?
- 2:29:31Speaker 1: No, it's not. We only hear like 10 seconds of
- 2:29:35Speaker 1: it every day.
- 2:29:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:29:36Speaker 1: So it's not a great stuff. Thanks for the airing.
- 2:29:40Speaker 2: Agreements as people, eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero 700.
- 2:29:43Speaker 2: You can keep bringing them in. I'm happy to keep
- 2:29:45Speaker 2: airing your grievances. The drive with Spence Chekits is up
- 2:29:48Speaker 2: at Wasatch Front Kia today for their Labor Day tent sale.
- 2:29:54Speaker 1: 770 West Riverdale Road in Ogden.
- 2:29:56Speaker 2: That means he's probably not going to talk to us
- 2:29:59Speaker 2: for some crosstalk, which we have a few minutes to
- 2:30:02Speaker 2: close out the show and talk about some of the
- 2:30:05Speaker 2: other things that happened last night in college football, including
- 2:30:07Speaker 2: Colorado grabbing a big win for the Big 12.
- 2:30:10Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:30:22Speaker 10: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:30:25Speaker 10: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:30:37Speaker 1: All right. Great show today.
- 2:30:39Speaker 2: Thanks, everyone who participated, everyone who came in. I want
- 2:30:43Speaker 2: to give credit where it's due. Colorado beat Georgia tech
- 2:30:46Speaker 2: last night. And we have lamented the idea that there's
- 2:30:50Speaker 2: not a lot of opportunities for the big 12 to
- 2:30:52Speaker 2: kind of make its case and to say, Hey, you know,
- 2:30:57Speaker 2: we are at least as good as the ACC. Georgia
- 2:31:00Speaker 2: tech is a physical team and Colorado. We've made a
- 2:31:04Speaker 2: lot of cracks about how they're so tiny and maybe
- 2:31:08Speaker 2: aren't going to be capable of being physical.
- 2:31:10Speaker 1: They hung around, hung around, hung around.
- 2:31:13Speaker 2: And they got one really great pass down the stretch
- 2:31:16Speaker 2: from their quarterback at a time. They needed it, finished
- 2:31:20Speaker 2: a drive, scored a touchdown and then blocked a field goal,
- 2:31:24Speaker 2: Tennessee transfer, defensive safety blocks, a field goal as time
- 2:31:29Speaker 2: expires and Colorado wins that football game.
- 2:31:31Speaker 4: Speaker 2, crazy ending. I was thinking about Jeff Schwartz
- 2:31:36Speaker 4: for most of the game though. Remember he said he
- 2:31:38Speaker 4: was taking Colorado to cover, but lose because They always,
- 2:31:44Speaker 4: in games that you think, oh, they should win this game,
- 2:31:47Speaker 4: they always make a few crucial mistakes and squander it.
- 2:31:54Speaker 4: Our guy Shahan tweeted something similar to that. It's like,
- 2:31:57Speaker 4: Colorado's out playing Georgia Tech, but they're losing because they
- 2:32:00Speaker 4: keep being Colorado.
- 2:32:02Speaker 7: And then.
- 2:32:04Speaker 1: Touchdown under a minute left.
- 2:32:07Speaker 4: Right after that touchdown, while everyone's still celebrating, they give
- 2:32:10Speaker 4: up a couple of huge plays. Georgia Tech gets in
- 2:32:14Speaker 4: field goal range really fast, and I'm like, well, there
- 2:32:16Speaker 4: you go. And then they block the kick to win
- 2:32:21Speaker 4: the game. What a great ending to, certainly from an
- 2:32:25Speaker 4: offensive perspective, kind of an unwatchable game.
- 2:32:30Speaker 2: The problem is then Dion immediately sat down in the
- 2:32:33Speaker 2: post game press conference and did his thing where he's
- 2:32:36Speaker 2: taken victory laps.
- 2:32:38Speaker 1: You believe now?
- 2:32:39Speaker 2: I thought you guys said we were too small. It's
- 2:32:41Speaker 2: like Dion, you won a game, dude.
- 2:32:44Speaker 1: Don't score. Do that. You scored 14 points by the way.
- 2:32:47Speaker 1: Don't flex and stunt. Now wait until your team establishes itself.
- 2:32:53Speaker 2: If they're capable of doing so, it's like, how have
- 2:32:55Speaker 2: you not learned this crazy?
- 2:32:57Speaker 1: Like don't do this.
- 2:32:59Speaker 4: It'd be bad for us as at the home of
- 2:33:01Speaker 4: the Utes, but like call us when you beat, when
- 2:33:04Speaker 4: you upset Utah or BYU, that one's fine. You know,
- 2:33:09Speaker 4: like don't, don't call us in week one after you
- 2:33:13Speaker 4: win a very sloppy game against.
- 2:33:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:33:15Speaker 4: A team that was really good last year in Georgia tech,
- 2:33:18Speaker 4: but this isn't last year. We don't know if Georgia
- 2:33:20Speaker 4: tech's going to be as good.
- 2:33:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:33:22Speaker 4: That, that that's questionable by him, but it was, it
- 2:33:26Speaker 4: was awesome to see, uh, Colorado do something that kind
- 2:33:31Speaker 4: of helps the Big 12 in week one.
- 2:33:34Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:33:34Speaker 1: Stay tuned for the drive with Spence checkups.
- 2:33:36Speaker 2: He's up there at Wasatch front Kia seven 70 West
- 2:33:40Speaker 2: Riverdale road, annual Labor Day tent sale.
- 2:33:42Speaker 1: The tents are up and the prices are going down.
- 2:33:45Speaker 2: Stop by enter to win a free TV and grab
- 2:33:48Speaker 2: some little Caesars hot and ready pizza while it lasts.
- 2:33:51Speaker 2: Spence has a weakness for hot and ready pizza. So
- 2:33:53Speaker 2: he's probably eaten one himself already, which means less for you.
- 2:33:57Speaker 2: So hurry up there before he eats it all. Thanks
- 2:34:00Speaker 2: for listening to the Sean O'Connell Show. Enjoy the weekend.
- 2:34:03Speaker 2: We're back on Tuesday. Have a great Labor Day weekend.
- 2:34:06Speaker 1: Be safe. Be sober.
- 2:34:08Speaker 2: If you're not sober, get a designated driver. Make sure
- 2:34:12Speaker 2: that everybody around you can enjoy this weekend and you
- 2:34:16Speaker 2: can get home safe. Thank you for listening. Really so
- 2:34:19Speaker 2: happy football season is back. Utah's number one sports talk,
- 2:34:23Speaker 2: ESPN 700, 92 on FM.
