Speaker 1: Like Baskin Robbins is right there now.
• 0:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, but Baskin Robbins.
• 0:03
Speaker 2: Well, baskin Robbins doesn't put.
• 0:04
Speaker 2: I do like Baskin Robbins, but I think for me and you it's going to be the nostalgia, the taking us back yeah.
• 0:13
Speaker 1: And now they say you can get the like the sauces that harden and you can dip each bite in.
• 0:19
  Speaker 1: Is that true?
• 0:20
  Speaker 1: I don't know.
• 0:22
Speaker 3: You're listening to the Midweek Motivation Podcast from DeSoto Hills Baptist Church in South Haven Mississippi.

• 0:36
Speaker 2: Welcome to the Midweek Motivation Podcast for April 2nd here at DeSoto Hills Baptist Church.
• 0:43
Speaker 2: I'm Mark Lewis and I'm David Burgess.
• 0:46
Speaker 2: We hope this program can encourage folks throughout DeSoto County and beyond.

• 0:52
Speaker 2: We have Volunteer Appreciation Sunday that is coming up on April the 27th.
• 0:59
Speaker 2: We haven't talked about that, partly because I have no clue about this event.
• 1:03
Speaker 2: So why don't you tell us, David, what the Volunteer Sunday on the 27th is going to look like?
• 1:10
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I'll be glad to, all right.
• 1:12
Speaker 1: So, man, our volunteers, just think about what goes on in this building from week to week Wednesdays, every Wednesday, every Sunday, what does it take to make something like this run or to keep a ship like this afloat?
• 1:29
Speaker 1: We, you know, we, look around at staff meeting.
• 1:32
Speaker 1: There's, you know, a handful of us that are talking about details in the week, and it would be so overwhelming to look at all of these details and all of the things that have to be done, and it would be solely our you know us doing them.
• 1:49
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 1:49
Speaker 1: As a staff, we cannot do that.
• 1:51
  Speaker 1: That is impossible.
• 1:52
Speaker 1: And so we decided, man, we need to take some time to acknowledge our great volunteers who help make everything that we do in the four walls of the church possible and out of the four walls of the church, and in the four walls of the church make this possible.
• 2:09
Speaker 1: We think we have Sunday school teachers, we have adult student children, preschool teachers that help us day in and day out.
• 2:19
Speaker 1: And that's huge, there's 20-plus people in preschool alone on Sunday mornings I'm talking every Sunday Small group leaders on Wednesday nights.
• 2:26
Speaker 1: We have to have these people to do what we do in the ministry here at Soda Hills, so we want to acknowledge people like that.
• 2:35
Speaker 1: We have our security team who is always on top of everything in regards to safety and thinking about and showing up and being willing to serve there for our event helpers just having an event.
• 2:48
Speaker 1: We can't do an event by ourselves.
• 2:49
Speaker 1: People show up to help volunteer, to put those on our committees, man the list goes on and on how this works, and so we just wanted to take some time to thank everybody involved and to acknowledge their service and say, hey, we appreciate you, we love you.
• 3:04
Speaker 1: Let's celebrate you today.
• 3:14
Speaker 1: We're going to have some donuts on a Sunday.
• 3:15
Speaker 1: Everybody loves donuts on a Sunday, yes, so we're going to serve donuts.
• 3:18
Speaker 2: I know like Mr Fred gets here early, early on Sunday mornings and starts working on coffee, like there's so many people that do things here at the church that you just never, ever, ever know.
• 3:28
Speaker 2: So it's literally hundreds of people.
• 3:31
Speaker 1: Yeah, and to the table that gets decorated Right.
• 3:33
Speaker 1: You know, at the crossroads there in the Grand Hall, right, shout out, ms Karen.
• 3:37
Speaker 2: Right, it's all the little things, and so we're going to have donuts on the 27th and it's basically just a thank you to everyone who helps.
• 3:46
Speaker 2: We know that we don't acknowledge all those people ever, and so this is us acknowledging everyone on that one Sunday and we'll acknowledge you all right now.
• 3:58
Speaker 2: We really appreciate everything you do to spread the gospel here at DeSoto Hills.
• 4:05
Speaker 2: Okay, our last Wednesday of the season I wanted to talk about that as well is going to be April the 30th, and we have always done our Wednesday nights have always run in seasons.
• 4:18
Speaker 2: We typically have had like a fall season and then we'll take a break at the holidays and then we come back for break at the holidays and then we come back for a winter slash spring season, where the classes and all of that change and rotate.
• 4:34
Speaker 2: Obviously, our kids and youth have their own programming.
• 4:37
  Speaker 2: That happens throughout.
• 4:38
Speaker 2: But the adults especially have always changed courses, what they're doing on Wednesday nights, with that fall section and then the spring section.
• 4:47
Speaker 2: Then traditionally we have taken the summers off as far as adults go.
• 4:52
Speaker 2: Now, youth and children have continued to do programming, although it looks a tad different in the summer.
• 4:58
Speaker 2: This year all of that's changing.
• 5:01
Speaker 2: On April the 30th, we're going to complete our spring season of Wednesday nights and then we're going to take one week off, which is going to be May 7th.
• 5:12
Speaker 2: There will be no activities here at DeSoto Hills on Wednesday, may 7th.
• 5:16
Speaker 2: Summers here on Wednesday nights and our summers are no longer going to be that book study.
• 5:27
Speaker 2: We're doing a whole different type of thing.
• 5:28
Speaker 2: Can you explain to everyone what that's going to look like?
• 5:32
Speaker 1: Sure, so we are.
• 5:34
Speaker 1: It's going to be great Thinking about the summer schedule.
• 5:38
Speaker 1: You know everything kind of slowed down, but you know we're not going to really slow down that much.
• 5:44
Speaker 1: But we're not going to really slow down that much.
• 5:45
Speaker 1: We're going to continue ministry.
• 5:49
Speaker 1: I know we're thinking about the classes that we have right now.
• 5:55
Speaker 1: This semester it's going to be not a continuation, but maybe some new classes offered, maybe not as many.
• 6:01
Speaker 1: We're still kind of tinkering and toying with the details, but we're bringing summer meals.
• 6:07
Speaker 1: So that's one thing that you did not see in the summer was summer meals, but now I've got some great news Summer meals are going to be here to stay.
• 6:17
Speaker 1: So those are a couple of things that you can expect.
• 6:20
Speaker 1: Not much different than what we've got going on.
• 6:22
Speaker 1: Probably not much at all.
• 6:25
Speaker 2: I don't think choirs we're going to meet.
• 6:26
  Speaker 2: Is that correct?
• 6:28
  Speaker 1: I don't think so.
• 6:28
  Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you're right.
• 6:29
Speaker 2: I think the choirs are going to take the summer off.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: We have a lot of volunteers.
• 6:33
Speaker 2: It takes a lot of manpower to do the choirs on top of the discipleship classes that we run for our children and students.
• 6:39
Speaker 2: So there won't be choir in the summer, but children will have some programming in the summer and then youth are going.
• 6:48
Speaker 2: Youth typically change over a little bit of what happens in the summer.
• 6:51
Speaker 2: We do more playing outside because the weather is beautiful and then you continue to do devotions.
• 6:58
Speaker 2: So the summer for the youth won't be the exact programming that we do in the fall and the spring, but the youth will continue through the summers, just like they always have.
• 7:08
Speaker 2: The biggest change, the biggest change for our listeners, is to know that the adults are going to have some classes and some courses and they're going to get some of that cherished fellowship with each other that we sometimes end up missing in the summer.
• 7:24
Speaker 1: Yes, we are people who need each other, and so we don't want to break from that.
• 7:32
  Speaker 2: Absolutely.
• 7:32
Speaker 2: So be prepared for that and keep that in the back of your mind.
• 7:34
Speaker 2: Again, we will take May 7th off and then the very next week we will start that summer schedule and it will include meals.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: And please be mindful, this is going to be super, super important.
• 7:44
Speaker 2: We don't know what those crowds are going to look like.
• 7:47
Speaker 2: We have got to have our listeners sign up for those meals in the summer so that we can know what to order and what to prepare for, because we understand that that crowd is going to look a little different and we would, of course, expect it to dip a little bit, with everybody going on vacations and stuff like that.
• 8:04
Speaker 2: so we're going to need to know from week to week who's coming, If you're planning on coming we need to know that you're coming to eat so that we can make sure we have food prepared for everybody.
• 8:13
Speaker 2: So every Sunday morning, david typically mentions about signing up for that and that'll be in our worship guide.
• 8:21
Speaker 2: Or you can always call our church office if you are not here on Sunday but you plan on coming on Wednesday.
• 8:26
Speaker 2: Give our church office a call, david.
• 8:28
Speaker 2: I think it's by Monday morning that we need to have that, so we can order.
• 8:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, monday mid-morning would be great, so that we can order, all right.
• 8:35
Speaker 2: And then we also wanted to make mention that graduation recognition is going to be on May the 4th, sunday, may the 4th this year, and we especially wanted to mention that, just because our original calendar had a different date, but because of several different events that we had to coordinate with, we had to move that date.
• 8:53
Speaker 2: So we want everybody to be aware that our graduate service here at DeSoto Hills for our graduating seniors is going to be May 4th.
• 9:03
Speaker 2: We also enjoy recognizing people who have graduated with continuing education as well in some form or fashion.
• 9:11
Speaker 2: But you need to call and let David know that, because we may not realize that here.
• 9:18
Speaker 2: So let us know and we will be more than happy to recognize you on that Sunday as well, but you need to make sure you call a week out.
• 9:28
Speaker 2: Make sure you give us a week's notice on that, all right?
• 9:30
Speaker 2: Finally, dave, it's starting to feel like spring.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: What outdoor activities does the Burgess household enjoy this time of year?
• 9:40
Speaker 2: We're cramped up the Lewis house, if you're anything like us.
• 9:43
Speaker 2: We're cramped inside for like months and it's killing us.
• 9:47
Speaker 2: And so when that warm weather gets going, man, we are outside.
• 9:52
Speaker 2: It's like popping the can of Sprite.
• 9:54
  Speaker 2: It's boom, we're gone.
• 9:56
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm assuming y'all get cramped in the house and you're ready to get out and play.
• 10:00
Speaker 1: Our kids are like tearing the house apart, like we gotta like revamp the walls.
• 10:06
Speaker 1: You know that if it's too cold, like we just gotta start over, just bulldoze it down and fix everything.
• 10:12
Speaker 1: Um, no, I'm just kidding, it's not that bad.
• 10:15
Speaker 1: But yes, our boys love outdoors.
• 10:20
  Speaker 1: They live outdoors.
• 10:21
Speaker 1: They would live out there if I would let them.
• 10:22
Speaker 1: The big thing that we start doing is we go for walks.
• 10:26
Speaker 1: Take the dog for a walk Bowser, he's a little golden doodle, he's not little, he's huge, he is huge.
• 10:32
Speaker 1: But we take him for a walk.
• 10:34
Speaker 1: He's not little, he's huge, he is huge, but we take him for a walk.
• 10:36
Speaker 1: If there's a trail to cut through or woods to tromp through, the kids are let's go, let's go on an adventure, let's go through there.
• 10:44
Speaker 1: We hit up the playgrounds at Snowdon.
• 10:46
Speaker 1: Our kids love the big McDonald's.
• 10:50
Speaker 1: They call it the one and all branch where there's a play place.
• 10:53
  Speaker 1: They love that.
• 10:55
Speaker 1: Uh, but the outdoor in springtime, the outdoor playgrounds they are, they live for that yes, what's your favorite playground in town?
• 11:03
Speaker 1: we just, uh, I mean we went to.
• 11:06
Speaker 1: We usually go to snowden when we're outside, but we took them a couple weekends ago to conger park and hernando on a saturday, so it was crowded, very crowded, but they loved it.
• 11:16
Speaker 2: They have redone that.
• 11:17
Speaker 2: They've redone that park and surprisingly, they redesigned it very similar to what the original design was.
• 11:25
Speaker 2: I'm sure there were people who said, if you're going to change this, it better be like the old one, just redone new.
• 11:29
Speaker 2: They don't really build playgrounds like that anymore.
• 11:32
Speaker 1: It's all wood Because it's so expensive yeah grounds like that anymore.
• 11:37
Speaker 2: Right, it's all wood.
• 11:38
Speaker 2: Because it's so expensive.
• 11:39
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so expensive to maintain, but um, it's, it's an amazing old harkens back to a previous time, an older time, and it's a really amazing design.
• 11:45
Speaker 2: And so I was.
• 11:46
Speaker 2: I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that they had just basically rebuilt that old playground in the same style of what it originally was.
• 11:54
Speaker 2: South Haven had a wonderful playground back in the day at Central Park.
• 11:59
  Speaker 2: Same thing.
• 12:01
Speaker 2: It was old wood, it rotted and they had to bring it down.
• 12:04
Speaker 2: They did rebuild that one.
• 12:07
Speaker 2: It sort of has a fort-like feel, kind of like the old one did.
• 12:10
Speaker 1: It's metal though too, but it's metal.
• 12:13
Speaker 2: And it's not as cool as it once was, and I totally understand it.
• 12:18
Speaker 2: It is a booger to maintain those old wood playgrounds and you've got the safety factor of splinters and all that as well and nails.
• 12:26
Speaker 2: But Conger Park is a fantastic playground.
• 12:32
Speaker 2: This is a really good, I'll say, snowden.
• 12:34
Speaker 2: They did a really good job building Snowden.
• 12:35
  Speaker 2: It's not necessarily a cookie-cutter type playground.
• 12:37
Speaker 2: This is a really good, I'll say Snowden.
• 12:38
Speaker 2: They did a really good job building Snowden.
• 12:38
Speaker 2: It's not necessarily a cookie cutter type playground.
• 12:39
  Speaker 2: It was.
• 12:39
  Speaker 2: It's a very, a very different playground.
• 12:41
Speaker 2: If any of our aldermen are listening, I would still love to have a splash pad, a city splash pad.
• 12:47
Speaker 2: I know, I know that the I know that the liability is is always a big concern with those things, but man, a really awesome little water park.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: Yeah my kids would live there.
• 13:01
  Speaker 2: Incredible.
• 13:01
Speaker 2: And that brings me to my next thing.
• 13:03
Speaker 2: The city of South Haven is becoming more and more outdoor friendly, which I champion that I know there's some people who don't necessarily want the city spending money on that kind of thing, but there is a lot of research that says that it greatly increases the quality of life, and kudos to South Haven.
• 13:21
Speaker 2: They're the one city, I would say, in DeSoto County who has put a lot of chips in that basket and has really tried to strive to give the city a much better quality of life.
• 13:32
Speaker 2: When it comes to the outdoor living, we've got amazing concerts coming this year to Snowden.
• 13:39
Speaker 2: Have you ever been to one of the concerts at Snowden since it's been redone?
• 13:43
Speaker 1: Since, like the new seats have gone in yes, since the whole redesign.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: The last time I went was when we went to see Rob Thomas.
• 13:50
  Speaker 2: Are you serious?
• 13:51
  Speaker 2: That's?
• 13:51
Speaker 1: the last concert I went to at the amphitheater.
• 13:53
Speaker 2: David, I don't think you had kids when we did that, probably not.
• 13:59
Speaker 1: That was Matchbox 20.
• 14:00
Speaker 2: That was such a fun night it was awesome.
• 14:04
Speaker 1: Yeah, we should do it again.
• 14:07
Speaker 2: Me and Jen are going to several concerts coming up.
• 14:10
Speaker 2: We got some tickets.
• 14:11
Speaker 2: You need to get you a pair of tickets to the Thomas Rhett concert.
• 14:15
  Speaker 2: Are you friends?
• 14:16
Speaker 2: Are you friends, are you?
• 14:18
  Speaker 1: friends.
• 14:18
  Speaker 1: Are you fans?
• 14:18
  Speaker 1: Are you fans?
• 14:19
Speaker 1: Me and Thomas we?
• 14:20
  Speaker 2: go way back.
• 14:20
Speaker 2: Are you fans of Thomas Rhett, do you?
• 14:22
Speaker 1: listen to country music much.
• 14:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, hannah is, hannah likes it, and I listen to him through Hannah every once in a while.
• 14:28
Speaker 1: But I mean, I'm not my mind races all the time and I'm usually a podcast guy when I'm on the road, right?
• 14:34
Speaker 2: So you don't listen to a whole lot of music.
• 14:36
Speaker 2: I don't listen to a ton of music these days.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: Well, for those who don't know, thomas Rhett is actually Rhett Atkins' son and he has written just a lot of incredible.
• 14:45
Speaker 2: I would call it pop, country hits yeah yeah.
• 14:48
Speaker 2: And I'm all into pop country.
• 14:49
Speaker 2: I know a lot of people are like we don't like that pop country stuff.
• 14:52
Speaker 2: We want the old country.
• 14:53
  Speaker 2: But he's just a very family-friendly act.
• 14:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's good and he's just incredible.
• 15:00
Speaker 2: So we got tickets to that.
• 15:01
Speaker 2: And then James Taylor Kudos to the city of South Haven.
• 15:07
Speaker 2: They're doing the promoting these days out of Landers so I think the city's kind of handling the promotion.
• 15:13
Speaker 2: Live Nation's no longer doing the booking there, so the city of South Haven is handling their own booking this year and they bagged James Taylor.
• 15:21
Speaker 2: There's actually quite a few really good shows James.
• 15:24
Speaker 2: Taylor is a really, really big act to be able to come to South Haven, and so we're looking forward to it.
• 15:31
Speaker 2: I love, and me and Jen live in the area we live in what they call now the Snowden District, so we can actually walk to the amphitheater.
• 15:41
Speaker 2: There is no greater feeling than to be able to just walk out your front door and then walk to restaurants and then walk to the amphitheater to enjoy a show and then walk home show and then a walk home.
• 15:59
Speaker 2: So, anyway, all that to say, we, we absolutely love the spring and the season and I'm so, so excited that we have warm temperatures.
• 16:03
Speaker 2: Back in the south.
• 16:06
Speaker 2: I called he's I think is an assistant dean or assistant to the president, a good buddy of mine, andrew Dale.
• 16:16
Speaker 2: I can't remember his exact title, but he is high up on the food chain for Northwest and I actually had a conversation with him this morning and it was so funny.
• 16:27
Speaker 2: We were talking about high school and getting some students the information to go to Northwest that they needed, and then he just he said you know, man, how you been doing.
• 16:36
Speaker 2: I said, great, and Andrew is brand new to North Mississippi, he's grown his entire life in South Mississippi and he said dude, winter, winter stinks up here.
• 16:50
Speaker 2: Nobody has coats down in the South Like he's, like we're so ready for the spring weather.
• 16:56
Speaker 2: He said it was awful.
• 16:58
  Speaker 2: Winter is awful.
• 16:59
Speaker 2: I never thought that anywhere in Mississippi would get that cold.
• 17:03
Speaker 2: I'm like bro just get ready.
• 17:06
  Speaker 2: Just get ready.
• 17:07
Speaker 2: I mean, he's a South Mississippi boy, has been his whole life.
• 17:10
  Speaker 2: That's funny.
• 17:11
Speaker 2: He's definitely hit a couple of winters here and now and he's like man, this is no joke and, to be fair, it was a pretty chilly winter this year yeah, it was extra and then like just the grayness of you know, winter, here it's gray all the time, it seems.
• 17:26
Speaker 1: You know, talk about seasonal depression.
• 17:28
Speaker 1: I'm like it's real man, like when that sun comes out and I'm in it.
• 17:33
Speaker 1: I'm like come to life, come back from the dead.
• 17:36
  Speaker 1: I didn't had a miracle happen.
• 17:39
Speaker 2: Oh, no joke, man.
• 17:41
Speaker 2: All right, the Grand Prix.
• 17:42
Speaker 2: We want to mention back to a few church calendar things that I miss that I definitely want to make sure our listeners are aware of.
• 17:53
Speaker 2: The Grand Prix will take place this Sunday, april 6th, at 4 pm.
• 17:55
Speaker 2: It's going to be in the MPC.
• 17:56
Speaker 2: The last few weeks I've been saying the treehouse, but we are worried about the crowd size for that.
• 18:01
Speaker 2: It was actually really big last year in the treehouse, so we are moving it to the MPC to make sure that we have plenty of room.
• 18:08
Speaker 2: I hope they put the track right up on stage.
• 18:11
  Speaker 1: That'd be cool.
• 18:11
Speaker 2: We need to just have the track right up on stage.
• 18:13
Speaker 2: In fact, we could put a camera right on the track and have it on the big screen.
• 18:16
  Speaker 2: So we can.
• 18:17
  Speaker 1: Oh, that's a good idea.
• 18:18
  Speaker 2: I know right.
• 18:19
Speaker 2: I think I can make that happen.
• 18:20
Speaker 2: You can test the track this Saturday at 2 pm.
• 18:24
Speaker 2: I believe that I don't know where that test is going to be.
• 18:27
Speaker 2: I doubt she's going to set the thing up in the MPC, but I may be wrong.
• 18:31
Speaker 2: But up here at 2 pm you'll find out where the test track is, if you want to test your car on the track.
• 18:36
Speaker 2: The Easter egg hunt is also going to be on April 13th at 2 pm for all ages, and then we want you to be aware that Easter is coming on April 20th and there is going to be three services 8 am, 9 am, 10.30 am and we definitely need some help In preschool.
• 18:54
Speaker 2: We're now going to shift to our devotion portion of the podcast that we call the midweek moment.
• 19:09
Speaker 1: All right, I'm glad to join you, all of our listeners, and Mark.
• 19:14
Speaker 1: I'm glad to join you, all of our listeners and Mark, with the midweek moment.
• 19:21
Speaker 1: This morning or this afternoon, I'm going to be talking a little bit about some things that I've been going over with our students in the student ministry.
• 19:26
Speaker 1: I've even shared it at FCA at Lewisburg High School recently.
• 19:35
Speaker 1: Shout out to Lewisburg High School FCA, FCS.
• 19:36
Speaker 1: It was a lot of fun.
• 19:36
Speaker 1: Thanks for having me out.
• 19:37
Speaker 1: Anybody else, let me know and I'll come out to see you at your prospective school.
• 19:42
Speaker 1: So today I'm going to teach you a Greek word.
• 19:47
Speaker 1: Some of you probably already know that word.
• 19:48
Speaker 1: It's called oikos, the word oikos, and so I asked our students you know they were looking at me like what are you talking about?
• 19:58
Speaker 1: What does that mean?
• 19:59
Speaker 1: And I said well, it's not something that's found in your parents, in your refrigerator at home.
• 20:04
Speaker 1: Okay, that's the yogurt.
• 20:06
Speaker 1: I'm not talking about the yogurt.
• 20:08
Speaker 1: I'm talking about the Greek word oikos, which translates to household.
• 20:13
Speaker 1: Okay, it's a very important word that we see in Acts, chapter 16.
• 20:19
Speaker 1: So let me just paint a picture for you Paul and Silas in Acts, chapter 15, they are going and they are witnessing, they're sharing the gospel.
• 20:31
Speaker 1: Everywhere they go, they're meeting new people, people are coming to faith.
• 20:34
Speaker 1: They're starting churches wherever they go, and Paul and Silas are being faithful followers of Jesus in Philippi, All right.
• 20:44
Speaker 1: And so they meet this woman named Lydia.
• 20:47
  Speaker 1: She gets saved.
• 20:48
Speaker 1: And then that's when you first see this word household I believe it's oikos household.
• 20:54
Speaker 1: Household, I believe it's oikos household.
• 20:59
Speaker 1: And you know, it's when somebody gets saved and then or not, oikos.
• 21:01
Speaker 1: What happens is they are talking to people and then the people turn around.
• 21:06
Speaker 1: They've trusted in Jesus, right, they have believed, repented and believed in the gospel for salvation.
• 21:14
Speaker 1: Then they take that message to their oikos, their household.
• 21:18
Speaker 1: We see that happen in Lydia's life.
• 21:21
Speaker 1: And then the place where we're going to be today, the passage that we're going to be in, starting in verse 25 through 34, we see the same thing happen to the jailer.
• 21:30
Speaker 1: So let's look in and see what happens with the jailer.
• 21:34
Speaker 1: At the end of chapter 16 in Acts, Starting in verse 25, of the prison were shaken and immediately all the doors were open and everyone's bonds were unfastened.
• 21:57
Speaker 1: When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
• 22:06
Speaker 1: But Paul cried with a loud voice do not harm yourself, for we are all here.
• 22:11
Speaker 1: And the jailer called for the lights and rushed.
• 22:13
Speaker 1: Called for lights and rushed in and, trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas.
• 22:21
Speaker 1: Then he brought them out and said, sirs, here's the key transition here in the jailer's life.
• 22:28
Speaker 1: Okay, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
• 22:32
Speaker 1: And they said believe in the Lord Jesus.
• 22:35
Speaker 1: And they said, he and all his family.
• 22:37
Speaker 1: Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them and he rejoiced, along with his entire household, oikos, that he had believed in God.
• 23:07
Speaker 1: Isn't that an incredible story.
• 23:08
Speaker 1: I am so excited to share this because Paul and Silas find themselves arrested and thrown into prison in Philippi.
• 23:16
Speaker 1: They were walking around and these two guys who had this slave girl, they were profiting off of the money of her services.
• 23:23
Speaker 1: She was using divination and trying to tell people's future and people would pay these men so that this girl would use her divination, her evil spirit of divination, on them in their lives to help project or foresee their future, or whatever it was.
• 23:46
Speaker 1: Whatever it was, people were buying into it, All right.
• 23:49
Speaker 1: So, Paul, she was pestering Paul and Silas and she kept saying hey, I know who you are, You're followers of Jesus, You're Paul, Like I know who you are.
• 23:57
Speaker 1: And so she, Paul, was like got fed up with her, you know, like she was nagging and annoying him.
• 24:05
Speaker 1: And he said and he turned around and cast the demon out of her and so the demon left.
• 24:10
Speaker 1: That's great for her, but it was bad for profits for the people, for the slave owner, and so that's why they were in jail.
• 24:22
Speaker 1: And so in my mind, like if I'm thinking according to you know the way David thinks in his mind, in his flesh, in his sinful ways, like I'm in jail and I'm like, wow, I was trying to be faithful and look at me now living it up in the jail house, and so that you know if I'm looking at it like that, like that's how David is seeing it.
• 24:41
Speaker 1: You know, look at me now.
• 24:44
Speaker 1: But what do we find Paul and Silas doing?
• 24:46
Speaker 1: We find Paul and Silas singing and praying and everybody in the prison is hearing them.
• 24:53
Speaker 1: They are hearing worship of the true and living God, Talk about sovereignty, Talk about trusting in God's sovereignty.
• 25:03
Speaker 1: In the situation that you're in, we typically sit back, pray that God will change our situation and then just sit back and wait until it happens.
• 25:11
Speaker 1: Whether it happens or not, that's what we're often doing.
• 25:14
Speaker 1: But we see Paul and Silas sitting and resting and trusting in the sovereignty of God in their situation.
• 25:20
Speaker 1: They are not living it up right now.
• 25:22
Speaker 1: They are in jail, suffering, They've been beaten, they're sore, they're hurting, but they're worshiping and praising God and praying to Him.
• 25:32
Speaker 1: And so, out of nowhere, the earth starts shaking.
• 25:35
Speaker 1: The shackles come off, everybody's ready to get out of there, like I'm sure.
• 25:45
Speaker 1: But the jailer comes in and he's like oh, I've made a mistake.
• 25:47
Speaker 1: I've let all these people go.
• 25:47
Speaker 1: These people were in my care.
• 25:48
Speaker 1: I've let them go.
• 25:49
Speaker 1: They escaped under my watch.
• 25:50
Speaker 1: I'm going to end it now, because what's coming from the kingdom or what's coming from the Roman rule is they are going to kill me anyway.
• 25:58
Speaker 1: So I might as well do it quick and painless as it can be.
• 26:02
Speaker 1: Paul says hey, no, Paul, remembering God's sovereignty.
• 26:06
Speaker 1: Hey, there's a reason why I'm here in this prison, there's a reason why I've been shackled, and maybe because it's this jailer.
• 26:13
Speaker 1: So he shares the gospel with them.
• 26:15
Speaker 1: The guy says what must I do to be saved?
• 26:17
Speaker 1: And they tell him believe in the Lord.
• 26:19
Speaker 1: Jesus Repent and believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.
• 26:22
Speaker 1: They really just say believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and all your household.
• 26:27
Speaker 1: And so we see this moment where the man is at his wits end.
• 26:32
Speaker 1: He's literally at the end of his life.
• 26:35
Speaker 1: He trusts in Christ.
• 26:36
Speaker 1: Christ changes his future, he begins to follow Jesus.
• 26:40
Speaker 1: He takes this message back to his household.
• 26:42
Speaker 1: His household gets saved.
• 26:44
Speaker 1: And so this awesome word, oikos I want to challenge our listeners to think about your oikos.
• 26:52
  Speaker 1: Who are they?
• 26:53
Speaker 1: And you know, we can always just say, yes, the people I live with, my household, the people that I live with.
• 26:59
Speaker 1: Well, it's really, if you're thinking about it, God has put you in places of influence.
• 27:07
Speaker 1: You have these relationships that you have influence over, and then you know, how do you want to influence these?
• 27:21
Speaker 1: Well, this lesson of oikos can be really applied to wherever you are in life.
• 27:23
Speaker 1: Your family, yes, but think about it.
• 27:24
Speaker 1: Your oikos goes out to your family.
• 27:26
Speaker 1: Your oikos can go out to your work.
• 27:28
Speaker 1: Your oikos is in your school.
• 27:30
Speaker 1: Your oikos is in your group of friends.
• 27:32
Speaker 1: This is your household and in our household.
• 27:37
Speaker 1: We need to identify, in our household, who are those that are far from God, and let's begin praying for those people.
• 27:47
Speaker 1: Let's begin praying for those people.
• 27:49
Speaker 1: Let's begin to ask God to work in their hearts and life and to use us to share the message of the gospel to these people.
• 27:56
Speaker 1: Identify your oikos, Share the gospel, Love those people, Pray for those people, Look for ways that God's working in their life, Share the message of the and then reap the harvest.
• 28:20
Speaker 2: I will never look at a cup of that yogurt again without thinking about this story.
• 28:26
Speaker 2: There you go, so you did your job today, buddy, amen.
• 28:29
Speaker 2: Can anyone of us honestly say that if we had been put in that same situation and we were sitting on that dirt floor with rats and everything else that would have been in that jail, that we would have been in as good of a mood as Paul and Silas had been?
• 28:48
Speaker 2: I'll tell you right now I am not too spiritually good to say that I would be like them.
• 28:55
Speaker 2: I would be mad at God.
• 28:57
Speaker 2: You just got too used to your Serta.
• 28:59
  Speaker 2: A thousand percent.
• 29:03
Speaker 2: It's Stearns and Foster, by the way.
• 29:06
Speaker 2: Oh there you go, stearns and Foster.
• 29:07
  Speaker 2: Yeah, the mattress.
• 29:10
Speaker 2: I told you that story, we got that mattress.
• 29:12
Speaker 2: I told you that story, we got that mattress.
• 29:13
Speaker 2: And I told Jennifer, don't miss that payment.
• 29:15
Speaker 2: If there's no other payment we make in this house.
• 29:19
Speaker 2: Make sure you pay that foster payment.
• 29:22
Speaker 1: The repo man comes to your house, yeah we're not losing.
• 29:24
Speaker 2: We're not going to lose that mattress again.
• 29:25
Speaker 1: Give me your mattress back.
• 29:27
Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, thanks for listening so much.
