- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Football at four.
- 0:03Speaker 2: The finding solutions during this mini buy.
- 0:05Speaker 3: Did that result in the decision to change offensive play
- 0:10Speaker 3: calling in any way?
- 0:13Speaker 1: No?
- 0:14Speaker 4: That was next Siriannie today asked if they are they
- 0:16Speaker 4: were going to make a change in the play caller.
- 0:19Speaker 4: He did not seem to like that question all that much.
- 0:22Speaker 4: Was it a fair question? Let's bring Jeff mocher in.
- 0:25Speaker 4: It's Football at four, powered by the Inside of the
- 0:27Speaker 4: Birds podcast and brought to you by the Fanatic Sportsbook
- 0:30Speaker 4: at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. You know, McClain
- 0:34Speaker 4: did tweet later on that the context of the question
- 0:37Speaker 4: was Jeff that they did change play callers during the
- 0:40Speaker 4: mini bye week in twenty twenty one. Did you think
- 0:44Speaker 4: that was a Is that a fair question to wonder
- 0:47Speaker 4: if the Eagles need a change at the play caller position.
- 0:52Speaker 2: I mean, you could debate it on both sides.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I mean, I think that that question is going to
- 0:57Speaker 3: be asked regardless because of Eagles not looking good offensively,
- 1:02Speaker 3: not playing a full four quarters offensively through six weeks
- 1:06Speaker 3: of the season, and you know the context of the
- 1:09Speaker 3: cord of the play caller change he's made before it
- 1:12Speaker 3: a little later in the season, and they kind of
- 1:15Speaker 3: had a guy in Matt Patricia that they brought in
- 1:19Speaker 3: almost I don't want to say for that reason, but
- 1:21Speaker 3: in case they needed it, felt they needed to make
- 1:24Speaker 3: a change. Is there's there's no there's no senior offensive
- 1:30Speaker 3: advisor here that you're gonna hand play calling to. It's
- 1:33Speaker 3: either gonna be Kevin Batulo or Nick Sirianni's gonna do
- 1:35Speaker 3: it himself. And I don't think Nick sirian is gonna
- 1:37Speaker 3: do it himself. So I think that they're more just
- 1:40Speaker 3: likely to figure it out. And if it doesn't work
- 1:42Speaker 3: after the year, who knows. But that's why it's gonna be.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Let me ask you, like if they don't, if this
- 1:46Speaker 4: doesn't work, they're gonna figure it out again. Like where
- 1:49Speaker 4: is this trending that you just constantly keep changing the coordinator?
- 1:52Speaker 1: Like at some point you would think that that has
- 1:56Speaker 1: to stop. Like, and I get it.
- 1:57Speaker 4: If you get a guy who's really good and he
- 1:59Speaker 4: gets hired, there's nothing you can do about that. But
- 2:01Speaker 4: you want to try to find your vic Fangil, your
- 2:04Speaker 4: guy who's okay with being the coordinator and saying, you
- 2:07Speaker 4: know what, I've.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Been the head coach, I've been that guy.
- 2:10Speaker 4: This is my new gig now and I'm here for
- 2:12Speaker 4: the long Like it feels like that's the direction.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Maybe they should have looked at No.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I don't agree.
- 2:18Speaker 3: I feel like a people have. I mean, I wrote
- 2:21Speaker 3: this too on Saturday on Philly Voyce. I don't know
- 2:22Speaker 3: if people under realize this, but the Eagles have scored
- 2:26Speaker 3: more points through six weeks this year than they did
- 2:28Speaker 3: last year. I think everybody needs to remember what they
- 2:32Speaker 3: felt about Kellen Moore last year through six weeks, when they.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Had scored fifteen points against No.
- 2:38Speaker 4: No.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Twenty points against Atlanta and the loss fifteen points against
- 2:41Speaker 3: New Orleans in a win twenty points against the Browns,
- 2:45Speaker 3: and then the week after against the Jaguars.
- 2:47Speaker 2: It wasn't much better. I don't have in front of me,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but they were not an offensive jugg or not.
- 2:51Speaker 3: And you know, Kellen Moore was trying, to your point, Mike,
- 2:54Speaker 3: Kellen Moore, as an experienced play caller, was trying to
- 2:57Speaker 3: bring elements of his offense to the Eagle offense. But
- 3:00Speaker 3: then eventually it started looking more just like the Eagles
- 3:03Speaker 3: offense of the last three or four years, except he
- 3:06Speaker 3: had something that his predecessor and now Kevin Patulo don't have,
- 3:10Speaker 3: which was a really strong running game, which is, let's
- 3:13Speaker 3: be fair, the offensive coordinator doesn't design and the play
- 3:16Speaker 3: caller doesn't design the runs. So I think that it's
- 3:19Speaker 3: a little bit too much as falling on Kevin Batulo,
- 3:21Speaker 3: and if you change the play caller again at the
- 3:24Speaker 3: end of the year, what the Eagles are sending the messages,
- 3:26Speaker 3: which I think is unfair, is that a first year
- 3:28Speaker 3: play caller cannot succeed or is not a good option
- 3:31Speaker 3: when they're If you look across the league, there are
- 3:33Speaker 3: plenty of good first year play callers, and there are
- 3:36Speaker 3: plenty of dhreads who do a bad job, by the way,
- 3:39Speaker 3: So I don't think there's a specific formula.
- 3:42Speaker 2: I think that the Eagles are missing what they've.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Had last year, which is a really strong offensive line
- 3:47Speaker 3: play and a strong running game to compensate for what
- 3:51Speaker 3: they've had for many years, which is a up and
- 3:53Speaker 3: down offense.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, and I.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Agree with what you're saying in terms of there's no formula.
- 3:57Speaker 4: I'm just talking about maybe for some stability, there is
- 3:59Speaker 4: to finally at somebody who says I'm gonna be the
- 4:02Speaker 4: guy for the next three to five years, and that
- 4:04Speaker 4: you can grow an offense. This formula of hiring a
- 4:06Speaker 4: guy he leaves, hiring a guy replacing him, hiring a
- 4:09Speaker 4: guy he leaves. I mean, it is hard to overcome that.
- 4:12Speaker 4: And that's what I'm saying. You better hope they don't
- 4:14Speaker 4: fire for Toolo, because that means you gotta hire another
- 4:16Speaker 4: new guy. And then we're going around the hamster wheel
- 4:19Speaker 4: again of what's this offensive guy ever called play? That's
- 4:22Speaker 4: why it's like, hey, is there a veteran offensive coordinator
- 4:25Speaker 4: who's okay with being an offensive coordinator? I don't know
- 4:28Speaker 4: that that guy exists. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't.
- 4:31Speaker 4: Just throwing you know, think it out loud, look.
- 4:33Speaker 2: At the hiring cycle.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And I wrote this, you know, sometimes you're only as
- 4:37Speaker 3: good as what's available. And I thought Mick Sirianni had
- 4:40Speaker 3: caught a break last year in the offseason when the
- 4:44Speaker 3: Chargers cleared house and a guy like Kellen Moore became available.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Who was available this year that Eagles fans would have
- 4:50Speaker 2: really like, Oh.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Doug Peterson and Press Taylor. No, probably not gonna happen.
- 4:53Speaker 3: How about Chip Kelly, he got an offensive job, corda job? Nope,
- 4:56Speaker 3: probably not a good fit for Philadelphia. So then you
- 4:59Speaker 3: go around and look and like, who would have been
- 5:02Speaker 3: that guy that you know got fired or was open
- 5:05Speaker 3: for a job.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I mean maybe John d Filippo. He's a friend of
- 5:08Speaker 2: inside the Birds.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I would vouch for him every time, but you know
- 5:11Speaker 3: he was already with the team Woods. It's hard, like
- 5:15Speaker 3: you the reason why you have good coaching staffs right
- 5:18Speaker 3: and good coaches coming up is that you want to
- 5:21Speaker 3: be able to prepare them for that moment when.
- 5:23Speaker 2: They can become your play caller.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Vic Fangielin is gonna be around forever, and if he retires,
- 5:28Speaker 3: you would love a guy like either Clint Hurt or
- 5:31Speaker 3: Christian Parker who's been with the system and come up
- 5:34Speaker 3: through to then become the play caller and not have
- 5:37Speaker 3: to go out there and hire someone who happened to
- 5:39Speaker 3: become available a lot.
- 5:41Speaker 2: It's just like it's just to me, like the way
- 5:43Speaker 2: you develop players, you need to be developing coaches and
- 5:46Speaker 2: you can't just give him six weeks before five.
- 5:48Speaker 4: I know this wouldn't happen, but Brian Callahan just got
- 5:52Speaker 4: fired as the head coach. He was the offensive coordinator
- 5:54Speaker 4: in Cincinnati with two pretty good wide receivers.
- 5:58Speaker 1: That would be interesting, wouldn't it.
- 6:00Speaker 2: I mean, not in Tennessee.
- 6:06Speaker 4: But let's be honest, they don't have a lot of
- 6:07Speaker 4: talent in Tennessee. His results were pretty good in Cincinnati.
- 6:10Speaker 4: And there's so many times where we have these conversations
- 6:13Speaker 4: when the team struggles and we always seem to say,
- 6:15Speaker 4: you know, well you have Brown and you have Smith,
- 6:17Speaker 4: and we always say, well, they got Chasing Higgins and
- 6:20Speaker 4: they don't seem to struggle in the past game. You know,
- 6:22Speaker 4: with a guy like that who is saying, hey, listen,
- 6:25Speaker 4: I know how to design a pass game for two
- 6:27Speaker 4: good wide receivers. Would it behoove you to jump on
- 6:30Speaker 4: a guy who's available at a time you didn't think
- 6:32Speaker 4: he would be available.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And I'm not saying make him the.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Offensive coordinator, just saying that, you know, hey, maybe you
- 6:37Speaker 4: need some ideas in this offense because it's obvious, not
- 6:42Speaker 4: just from what we're watching too. Jimoke's watching tape and stuff.
- 6:45Speaker 4: We're talking about Lane Johnson, your biggest veteran, most respected player.
- 6:50Speaker 4: When he comes out and says, this is a predictable offense.
- 6:53Speaker 1: We know the pass. The offense has been predictable.
- 6:55Speaker 4: Would it be crazy to say, let's bring in a
- 6:58Speaker 4: guy who maybe has had six in a pass game
- 7:01Speaker 4: with an offense someplace else.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I mean it's it's it's not crazy for after the
- 7:06Speaker 3: year and when you need to reevaluate. I just you know,
- 7:09Speaker 3: you don't bring Brian Callahan now to neuter Kevin Batrullo.
- 7:12Speaker 3: And by the way, Zach Taylor is the Bengals play
- 7:15Speaker 3: caller and I believe he always has been. So if
- 7:17Speaker 3: you're bringing in Brian Callahan to call plays, the only
- 7:19Speaker 3: time I know the call players have been the Titans.
- 7:22Speaker 1: So I'm not suggesting to call the plays.
- 7:24Speaker 4: I'm just saying to maybe add some life creativity your
- 7:28Speaker 4: pass offense.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that again.
- 7:32Speaker 3: You know, if you go back to last year, you
- 7:34Speaker 3: just got to get Vic Fangio must have been a
- 7:36Speaker 3: terrible coordinator for the first four weeks last year because
- 7:38Speaker 3: he was were getting carved up in some of those
- 7:41Speaker 3: games like Swiss Cheese, right, I mean, they looked embarrassing
- 7:43Speaker 3: against the Bucks.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about that.
- 7:45Speaker 4: What's going on with Vic Fangio's defense last week where
- 7:48Speaker 4: they look like they got their whole heart and salt
- 7:49Speaker 4: ripped out of their chest by the New York Giants.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah, man, people are gonna want to watch Inside the
- 7:54Speaker 3: tape come this week with Greg Cosel on Inside the
- 7:57Speaker 3: Birds because he is gonna break down that defensive tape.
- 8:00Speaker 3: And I can tell you when you're giving up completions
- 8:04Speaker 3: to guys like little Jordan Humphrey, who is elevated from
- 8:07Speaker 3: the practice squad, Wandale Robinson who's a real just a
- 8:11Speaker 3: slot receiver, but you know, wound up having a seventeen
- 8:14Speaker 3: yard er, a twenty five yarder, thirty four yarder. You know,
- 8:17Speaker 3: the obvious circle you draw around ringo and then the
- 8:19Speaker 3: dri Jackson had to get in there.
- 8:21Speaker 2: But I just thought in general.
- 8:22Speaker 3: The Eagles were not strong at the point of attack.
- 8:26Speaker 3: The tape showed that they give up too much in
- 8:28Speaker 3: the run game, and that's surprising.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I know they didn't have Jillen Carter. I know that,
- 8:33Speaker 2: I'm Quinnon Mitchell.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I'm not quite sure that's as much of an excuse though,
- 8:37Speaker 3: to look as poorly as they did in all facets
- 8:41Speaker 3: of defense.
- 8:42Speaker 4: Jeff Boscher from the Inside of the Birds podcast, It
- 8:45Speaker 4: is Football at four powered by the Inside the Birds
- 8:47Speaker 4: podcast that we're looking at this Eagles team getting ready
- 8:49Speaker 4: for the Minnesota Vikings. Darius Smith announces that he is
- 8:54Speaker 4: retiring today. This comes out of right field. Yeah, what
- 8:59Speaker 4: do you make of him just making this announcement here?
- 9:02Speaker 4: I mean, do you look at is there a layer
- 9:04Speaker 4: here or is this just like you know what? My
- 9:06Speaker 4: heart I thought was in it because he did say
- 9:08Speaker 4: I got a lot of football left in me when
- 9:10Speaker 4: he signed here, and now all of a sudden he
- 9:12Speaker 4: has no football left in him. He ends up retiring
- 9:16Speaker 4: number one? Why do you think that was? And number two?
- 9:19Speaker 4: What does that leave the Eagles with at that position?
- 9:21Speaker 4: Because he was their best pass rusher to date.
- 9:23Speaker 2: That's the shocking thing, Mike.
- 9:25Speaker 3: I mean, it would be one thing if he was
- 9:27Speaker 3: playing and he felt like I just can't.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Do it anymore.
- 9:29Speaker 3: But he was there, probably their most consistent pass rusher
- 9:32Speaker 3: since he joined the team. I thought it was a
- 9:34Speaker 3: little odd, and I don't know if if this is
- 9:37Speaker 3: behind anything. I thought it was a little odd that
- 9:39Speaker 3: Ojilari started opposite Hunt against the violence and not.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Is Darius Smith. But you know, the snap count wasn't
- 9:46Speaker 2: all that out of whack.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I'm surprised, you know, I know he's thirty three, right,
- 9:52Speaker 3: So maybe just the body didn't feel it anymore and
- 9:55Speaker 3: didn't feel like going through the riggers of the.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Day to day anymore.
- 9:59Speaker 3: But it certainly leaves Eagles in dire straits at a
- 10:02Speaker 3: position that they weren't getting great production at to begin with.
- 10:05Speaker 3: So now you have Jaelex Hunt, now you have Ojelari,
- 10:08Speaker 3: who is inactive for the first four weeks of the season,
- 10:11Speaker 3: having to play a bigger role. You gotta wait for
- 10:13Speaker 3: Nolan Smith to come off I our sometime in November.
- 10:16Speaker 3: So really you're just rolling with Hunt, Oji, josh Ucha,
- 10:19Speaker 3: who's been okay. All these guys have been okay. They're
- 10:22Speaker 3: not playing badly. I think people are a little bit
- 10:26Speaker 3: underestimating the Eagles edge rush. It hasn't been great, but
- 10:28Speaker 3: hasn't been bad, and you know, but it's it's certainly
- 10:32Speaker 3: not deep and now it's thinner.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Uh until Nolan Smith comes back.
- 10:36Speaker 3: I gotta imagine Howie Roseman will be scouring again the
- 10:38Speaker 3: trade market. But you know, you know, it's it's hard
- 10:42Speaker 3: to go out there and trade for like an elite
- 10:45Speaker 3: edge rusher. If anything, You're you're hoping to get a
- 10:47Speaker 3: good player, but you might just get a player who's
- 10:49Speaker 3: on the same level as Oji.
- 10:51Speaker 4: Uce right, Yeah, exactly, but essentially what you already have
- 10:55Speaker 4: and you're hoping to get more front Do you think
- 10:57Speaker 4: that they are disappointed by what they've gotten so far
- 11:00Speaker 4: from Jaylex Hunt?
- 11:04Speaker 3: No, only because I know Vic Fangio has said that
- 11:07Speaker 3: there's a lot of learning there to be done, and
- 11:09Speaker 3: he's a second year player, and you know, it's easy
- 11:11Speaker 3: to flash for a couple of weeks. And last year
- 11:14Speaker 3: he flashed at the right time in the playoffs the
- 11:17Speaker 3: super Bowl, but he was also surrounded by Josh Sweat
- 11:19Speaker 3: and Milton Williams. That's that's the biggest difference I think
- 11:22Speaker 3: in this defensive front is that while everybody's playing fine,
- 11:26Speaker 3: there's nobody who you.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Can look at and say, this guy's hurting the team.
- 11:29Speaker 3: They just don't have two guys who are just killing
- 11:31Speaker 3: it on a weekly basis the way Sweat and Milton
- 11:34Speaker 3: Williams did last year.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Yeah, and then of course it doesn't help that you'd
- 11:37Speaker 4: have Jalen Carter the other night, and you wonder, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 4: he just hasn't been nearly as impactful so far this
- 11:43Speaker 4: season for whatever reasons. I mean, he gets thrown out
- 11:45Speaker 4: of the first game, but he certainly doesn't look like
- 11:47Speaker 4: he has been as destruptive as an interior guy.
- 11:52Speaker 3: It's true, he's only played four of the six games
- 11:55Speaker 3: and he's battled that shoulder that we've all seen him
- 11:57Speaker 3: kind of like grimacing out of times on the sideline.
- 12:00Speaker 3: And then that's a heel, which is always a tough
- 12:02Speaker 3: injury for a three hundred pound guy. When he played
- 12:05Speaker 3: against the Broncos, surprisingly in pass protection, they did not
- 12:09Speaker 3: double team him. They slid toward brow Jomo, so they
- 12:12Speaker 3: felt like that they could single block him. There are
- 12:15Speaker 3: times he's been struggling to get through double teams.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And again, this is making it sound like he's having
- 12:19Speaker 2: a bad year.
- 12:20Speaker 1: He's not.
- 12:20Speaker 3: It's just not having the same year an impact and
- 12:23Speaker 3: effect on a snap to snap basis that he had
- 12:26Speaker 3: last year and they need to get that back. But
- 12:29Speaker 3: kind of like what we're saying with Landon Dickerson and
- 12:31Speaker 3: kind of like what we're saying with Kim Jurgens, you know,
- 12:34Speaker 3: post surgery at all, can he get to that level
- 12:37Speaker 3: if he's going to be banged up all year, that's
- 12:39Speaker 3: the question.
- 12:40Speaker 4: That's one hundred percent. And then of course you talk
- 12:42Speaker 4: about banged up. You had Quinnon Mitchell and that's a hamstring,
- 12:44Speaker 4: and that word and hamstring and corner going together doesn't
- 12:49Speaker 4: sound good. I mean, it's peer that we're not going
- 12:51Speaker 4: to get any news on him for this week, but
- 12:54Speaker 4: seems like a stretch to think he's going to be
- 12:56Speaker 4: back out there after he wasn't able to get back
- 12:58Speaker 4: on the field on Thursday.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Night, Right, maybe we'll have to see Wednesday.
- 13:03Speaker 3: Just because he didn't come back in the game Thursday
- 13:05Speaker 3: night doesn't to me signal that he's definitely a hurt
- 13:08Speaker 3: worse than it is. I would say probably ninety nine
- 13:11Speaker 3: point five percent of the time when a cornerback leaves
- 13:14Speaker 3: a game with any kind of hamstring, whether it's a
- 13:17Speaker 3: tweak or a.
- 13:19Speaker 2: More major pull, they always they say questionable.
- 13:22Speaker 3: But you know a guy is not coming back into
- 13:24Speaker 3: the game when he plays that position and has a
- 13:27Speaker 3: hamstring injury, because that's one of those injuries that even
- 13:30Speaker 3: if you just minorly tweak it, you can make it
- 13:32Speaker 3: worse immediately.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Right, It's not like a play through the pain type
- 13:36Speaker 2: of injury.
- 13:37Speaker 3: So there was he could have just stubbed the toe
- 13:40Speaker 3: and he probably wasn't going to come back in that
- 13:42Speaker 3: game because.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Elic Well and that.
- 13:45Speaker 4: But you know he went out and it really got bad.
- 13:47Speaker 4: I mean you're going with a Dory Jackson, Kaylee Ringo.
- 13:50Speaker 4: I mean it was it was bad, and then you
- 13:51Speaker 4: want to ask to wonder how much longer you can
- 13:54Speaker 4: go with Kaylee Ringo and a Dori Jackson as the
- 13:56Speaker 4: other guy.
- 13:57Speaker 2: So Adam and I talked about this.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Adam Apple and I on inside the Birds that came
- 14:01Speaker 3: out this morning and listen.
- 14:03Speaker 2: At some point, it's on the coaches.
- 14:05Speaker 3: To put the players in the best position to succeed,
- 14:08Speaker 3: and sometimes that means coming out of your comfort zone
- 14:11Speaker 3: for the betterment of the defense. I don't think it
- 14:14Speaker 3: would be a detriment as much to this defense.
- 14:17Speaker 4: If you, oh, you left this hanging there. We lost Mosher.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Let's see, I think he's coming back here. We'll see
- 14:29Speaker 4: in just a second here, So wouldn't be a detriment
- 14:32Speaker 4: if and uh, I don't see there he is.
- 14:36Speaker 1: We lost you.
- 14:36Speaker 4: You left us hanging there for a second. You said,
- 14:38Speaker 4: I don't think it would be a detriment if and
- 14:40Speaker 4: then we lost you.
- 14:42Speaker 2: I think I might have lost you because I didn't hear.
- 14:45Speaker 2: If you can hear me. Just nod, Yes you can.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Okay, did you get my point about playing Cooper to
- 14:50Speaker 3: Gen on the outside.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Okay, Well, that's what I was trying to say.
