- 1:26Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:32Speaker 7: This song gets the recognition that it actually should.
- 1:40Speaker 8: I mean, there's so much to put into context, so
- 1:44Speaker 8: let's let's start with the first thing. This song basically
- 1:48Speaker 8: rescues James Brown from was it tax of Asi?
- 1:52Speaker 6: Yes?
- 1:52Speaker 8: Okay, So there's there's a first thing. It's it's a
- 1:55Speaker 8: out of trouble with the government. It's easily the most
- 2:02Speaker 8: upbeat song from the best musical of the nineteen eighties
- 2:07Speaker 8: that is Rocky four. Because I'm sorry, any movie where
- 2:12Speaker 8: music outweighs dialogue by a four to one measure, then
- 2:16Speaker 8: it's a musical. So it's a musical. It does have
- 2:21Speaker 8: the stigma that you know, it's the last song we
- 2:24Speaker 8: hear before the tragic death of a followed. Yes, but
- 2:29Speaker 8: it is associated associated with what ultimately allowed the United
- 2:34Speaker 8: States to win the Cold War, and that's Rocky defeating Ivan.
- 2:36Speaker 7: Drop spoiler, spoiler if you haven't seen their money, yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 7: chip Ower. Sports Talk Thursday afternoon. It is hot outside.
- 2:45Speaker 7: Jason and Jared here today, not just Jared on a
- 2:50Speaker 7: wonderful Thursday afternoon. Jason carnw Is, Jared Hicks. We've got
- 2:54Speaker 7: so much going on, so much dropped yesterday afternoon, so
- 2:57Speaker 7: much still going on sports wise.
- 3:00Speaker 6: You have brought in a special guest with us today.
- 3:03Speaker 8: I did because if we're gonna talk, if we're gonna
- 3:07Speaker 8: talk soccer intelligently, we need to have someone who knows
- 3:13Speaker 8: soccer intelligently. So our special guest today we're going three
- 3:18Speaker 8: wide and today's special guests. Special guest host set the
- 3:24Speaker 8: NCAA not only men's and women's soccer record for career
- 3:28Speaker 8: solo shutouts with sixty eight. She also holds the single
- 3:32Speaker 8: season shutout record with twenty four.
- 3:36Speaker 9: Maybe twenty twenty three, Okay, I was gonna say twenty
- 3:39Speaker 9: two to twenty four, twenty three go in the middle.
- 3:42Speaker 8: She led Massiah College to the A Division three national
- 3:45Speaker 8: championship as a freshman in twenty twelve, while helping her
- 3:48Speaker 8: team to three conference championships, four postseason appearances and reaching
- 3:52Speaker 8: the Final four in her senior season. She wrapped up
- 3:55Speaker 8: her career with an eighty eight four and eight record
- 3:57Speaker 8: end goal with a remarkable point two four goal against
- 4:00Speaker 8: average and one hundred and fifty eight saves and one
- 4:02Speaker 8: hundred matches, while setting a program record with eight hundred
- 4:05Speaker 8: and eighty seven point two to three minutes played in
- 4:07Speaker 8: goal is one of She is one of just seven
- 4:11Speaker 8: players in program history to play in one hundred career
- 4:13Speaker 8: matches and the only goalkeeper to do it. She has
- 4:16Speaker 8: coached at Cumberland University, the University of Arkansas, Little Rock,
- 4:19Speaker 8: and at ut RGV Brass Valley and our seventy four listeners,
- 4:25Speaker 8: please welcome Audre Larson.
- 4:30Speaker 10: Thank you, thank you. I'm really excited to be here today.
- 4:33Speaker 8: And not only does she have experienced soccer, but she
- 4:36Speaker 8: is from Pennsylvania. I am yes, and so while she
- 4:41Speaker 8: does not necessarily have an affiliation with a certain basketball
- 4:45Speaker 8: team that is also in that state, she does have
- 4:48Speaker 8: thoughts on the subject. So it is very serendipitous that
- 4:52Speaker 8: she is here today. To also talk about the only
- 4:55Speaker 8: news story that could have usurped the United States winning
- 4:59Speaker 8: last night.
- 5:00Speaker 7: And it was like it obviously, and we are going
- 5:03Speaker 7: to get into World Cup soccer. We're gonna be able
- 5:04Speaker 7: to do that and dive deep into that the match yesterday.
- 5:07Speaker 7: But you sent me this information while I was at
- 5:11Speaker 7: the Chamber of Softball Classic, and I my jaw dropped
- 5:15Speaker 7: because I have no earthly idea other than I heard
- 5:22Speaker 7: them talking this morning and get up about Boston. Just
- 5:26Speaker 7: had to understand that Jalen Brown was not going to
- 5:29Speaker 7: go back to being number two on that team, and
- 5:32Speaker 7: it was going to cause way too much drama, way
- 5:34Speaker 7: too many issues.
- 5:35Speaker 6: And they knew that even.
- 5:37Speaker 7: If they extended them, which it didn't feel like they
- 5:39Speaker 7: wanted to do anyway, that was just going to be
- 5:42Speaker 7: too much mess for them to want to deal with
- 5:44Speaker 7: because what they got back isn't enough.
- 5:49Speaker 8: So let's just start with this, and I'm gonna post
- 5:54Speaker 8: this question to both of you. If a team called
- 5:58Speaker 8: up Philly prior to yesterday, okay, and said we'll take
- 6:03Speaker 8: Paul George in that contract, but we're not giving you
- 6:07Speaker 8: anything in return, does Philly do it?
- 6:10Speaker 6: If there was a way in NBA terms to be
- 6:14Speaker 6: able to do it.
- 6:15Speaker 8: But I'm just talking in the abstract.
- 6:18Speaker 9: I mean, I think ultimately, right, I'm still kind of
- 6:24Speaker 9: mind blown because it's like, why, what is the big
- 6:27Speaker 9: reason behind that? Obviously we don't know what goes on
- 6:30Speaker 9: behind closed doors?
- 6:32Speaker 10: Right? Is there cultural issues going on? Is that you know?
- 6:35Speaker 10: You don't know?
- 6:36Speaker 9: Right, obviously we only see what we see, like looking
- 6:40Speaker 9: at these contracts and how much these guys are on.
- 6:42Speaker 9: But it is a it's you know, I'm pretty dumbfounded
- 6:46Speaker 9: about the situation ultimately.
- 6:48Speaker 8: I mean, this is this is what gets me. And
- 6:50Speaker 8: of course Seawan's is and he's on the TV right
- 6:54Speaker 8: now because he's probably been the busiest man for the
- 6:57Speaker 8: past forty eight hours. And then Brian Windhors put this
- 7:00Speaker 8: out that apparently the initial offer that Boston put forth
- 7:06Speaker 8: to Philly was it was five number ones, and it
- 7:13Speaker 8: was oh help me, my god, damn it.
- 7:15Speaker 6: I didn't see the original.
- 7:18Speaker 8: God, we were talking about him yesterday. Now I'm totally
- 7:20Speaker 8: blanking on his name. It was not Paul George. And
- 7:25Speaker 8: how do you go from that to Paul George? Two
- 7:32Speaker 8: number ones and when you look at them, they're not
- 7:34Speaker 8: great number one, So the one's basically a swap and
- 7:37Speaker 8: the other ones a couple of years down the road,
- 7:39Speaker 8: and then two number two's and then that's there's that
- 7:45Speaker 8: part of it. The other part of this is there
- 7:48Speaker 8: was there was no rush for this, Like Brown's contracts
- 7:56Speaker 8: not up anytime.
- 7:57Speaker 7: Soon, no two years left on it before you got extended.
- 8:00Speaker 7: But he's just eligible for it now.
- 8:01Speaker 8: He's eligible for it. But like, what was the rush
- 8:06Speaker 8: to do this this immediate and in the fact of
- 8:11Speaker 8: the fact of the matter is you have now done
- 8:16Speaker 8: a Luka Doncic horrible style trade in the context of
- 8:23Speaker 8: what you got for what you sent away.
- 8:26Speaker 7: And that's why for me it goes back to Boston.
- 8:30Speaker 7: There's got to be something in that locker room that
- 8:34Speaker 7: just has not come out yet to where they knew
- 8:38Speaker 7: they had to get rid of him, because what else Again,
- 8:42Speaker 7: as you're talking about the numbers of this trade and
- 8:44Speaker 7: what they are getting back versus what they gave up
- 8:47Speaker 7: getting Paul George back, Paul George hasn't been anything probably
- 8:50Speaker 7: in the last five to six years of substance. And
- 8:53Speaker 7: so I don't understand other than whether it is Jason
- 8:59Speaker 7: Tatum saying you got to get rid of him, or
- 9:02Speaker 7: Jalen Brown saying you've got to get rid of me
- 9:03Speaker 7: because this year we are not going to get along.
- 9:06Speaker 7: I don't there there is no other viable explanation in my.
- 9:10Speaker 8: Opinion, and I mean I totally, I totally get that.
- 9:12Speaker 8: I'm just going by and because you just saw it
- 9:17Speaker 8: with Milwaukee before the trade deadline, Yannis is making it
- 9:21Speaker 8: clear he wants to get out m Milwaukee has kind
- 9:25Speaker 8: of in their mind what they're willing to accept to
- 9:27Speaker 8: go ahead and trade Yannis at the drade deadline. No
- 9:31Speaker 8: one has a package that's attractive, though, so they say
- 9:33Speaker 8: we're gonna wait, and it pays off as you get
- 9:36Speaker 8: to the end of the season, you get just before
- 9:38Speaker 8: the draft. And of course all of this is what
- 9:42Speaker 8: precipitates why we were talking about Jaylen Brown right now,
- 9:45Speaker 8: because the whole reason Miami had to make the trade
- 9:50Speaker 8: that hurt giving up the four number one draft picks
- 9:54Speaker 8: in addition to basically all of their shooters, was because
- 9:57Speaker 8: you could not let Boston win this trade, and Jalen
- 10:01Speaker 8: Brown was going to be part of the winning package.
- 10:04Speaker 8: By doing that, now you created that awkwardness in Boston.
- 10:09Speaker 8: So now Boston has to do something, But did they
- 10:13Speaker 8: really have to do it now as opposed to potentially
- 10:16Speaker 8: waiting and seeing if could you get some better offers.
- 10:20Speaker 8: And more to the point, you made you know, you
- 10:26Speaker 8: helped out your competition.
- 10:29Speaker 7: Yes, I mean you not just the same conference, in
- 10:31Speaker 7: the same division. You play more than any other team.
- 10:34Speaker 8: And now Jalen Brown's going to be gardon Jason Tatam
- 10:37Speaker 8: which oh, by the way, I'm pretty sure he's been
- 10:38Speaker 8: doing that in practice for a number of years. I mean,
- 10:41Speaker 8: that's what of all the teams that you could have
- 10:43Speaker 8: made this deal with Philly, Just it boggles the hot
- 10:49Speaker 8: like you say, I mean, it really takes it takes
- 10:54Speaker 8: you back to to what was the rationale in Brad
- 10:57Speaker 8: Stevens mind other than the fact. And then that's the thing.
- 10:59Speaker 8: Brad's evens is not dumb.
- 11:01Speaker 1: No.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Uh, one of the best gms there is.
- 11:04Speaker 8: One of the best gms there is. Kind of saw
- 11:06Speaker 8: the change in the league that was coming. That's why
- 11:09Speaker 8: he developed the team the way he did. But you know,
- 11:12Speaker 8: when you look at so when you look at this fact,
- 11:15Speaker 8: Michale Bridges, uh, he gets traded for five first round
- 11:19Speaker 8: draft picks Desmond Bane for four first round draft picks,
- 11:22Speaker 8: Rudy Gobert for five. We just mentioned Giannis obviously has
- 11:25Speaker 8: to you know, he's the prize pick. He goes goes
- 11:28Speaker 8: for four, I mean two two.
- 11:32Speaker 7: Here's the thing, and you can go back and look
- 11:35Speaker 7: at the Luka Danchets trade. They were not going the
- 11:38Speaker 7: Dallas Mavericks and that new ownership group was not going
- 11:41Speaker 7: to give him a max contract. And so the GM
- 11:47Speaker 7: and I'm drawing a blank on his name, was basically
- 11:49Speaker 7: given orders to get rid of him for what they
- 11:52Speaker 7: can get.
- 11:52Speaker 6: And if.
- 11:55Speaker 7: If Davis was even remotely healthy at any point in time,
- 12:01Speaker 7: that that isn't necessarily the worst trade. But they never
- 12:06Speaker 7: get Davis on the court now, and so that's why
- 12:08Speaker 7: that's bad. So that's why I'm going back to. There
- 12:11Speaker 7: is something that has been said in that building and
- 12:15Speaker 7: in that locker room between Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown
- 12:18Speaker 7: that said that we are not going to be able
- 12:20Speaker 7: to play together anymore.
- 12:21Speaker 9: But what's the appeal of Paul George None, there's no appeal, right,
- 12:26Speaker 9: what i'mage just sixteen points a game, all right? You
- 12:30Speaker 9: know it was just talking to you about this, Jared,
- 12:31Speaker 9: But you know he's claimed having some mental health problems.
- 12:35Speaker 9: You know, he spailed that drug test back in January
- 12:39Speaker 9: suspended while like twenty five games. You know, you almost
- 12:42Speaker 9: have culturally somebody's walking into your program that might be
- 12:45Speaker 9: a problem. Right, So what's the appeal?
- 12:49Speaker 8: I can't other than the fact that in the NBA
- 12:52Speaker 8: you try to make the you try to make the
- 12:54Speaker 8: contracts equal. And so with Jaylen the thing is with
- 12:57Speaker 8: Paul George, he's thirty six years old and you're only
- 13:00Speaker 8: taking a year off of the length of a contract,
- 13:03Speaker 8: but it's a max contract. Yes, with Jalen Brown. That's
- 13:07Speaker 8: kind of the interesting thing about what Boston is saying
- 13:11Speaker 8: with this trade. They're saying, this is a bad contract,
- 13:14Speaker 8: Jalen Brown's contract. This is bad because we want to
- 13:18Speaker 8: get rid of it, and we're willing to get rid
- 13:19Speaker 8: of it for anything. And the whole thing is the
- 13:21Speaker 8: league basically, I mean, unless we're talking about a Dallas
- 13:24Speaker 8: LA situation where Dallas only talked to the Lakers and
- 13:27Speaker 8: didn't talk to anyone else, If Boston only talked to Philly,
- 13:30Speaker 8: then that's really on Brad Stevens. But if they shot
- 13:33Speaker 8: Jalen Brown around, and the entire league said nah, it
- 13:36Speaker 8: ain't worth it. Then you've just declared that that contract,
- 13:40Speaker 8: which yeah, when his extension comes in, that's going to
- 13:42Speaker 8: be a seventy million dollars a year contract. That's a
- 13:45Speaker 8: bad that's among the worst contracts available.
- 13:49Speaker 7: Well, and here's where the NBA has really put themselves
- 13:53Speaker 7: into a corner and a number of situations, one with
- 13:58Speaker 7: the first and second April, and they have made it
- 14:00Speaker 7: to where you cannot keep your stars anymore, like it
- 14:03Speaker 7: is just becoming harder and harder to be able to
- 14:06Speaker 7: do that. While also within this current CBA if you
- 14:11Speaker 7: and I guess they didn't think it would happen as often.
- 14:13Speaker 6: But when you are on.
- 14:15Speaker 7: The All NBA team, when you're on the All NBA
- 14:18Speaker 7: Defensive team, when you when you get all of those
- 14:22Speaker 7: different accolades, that's what categorizes you for that MAX contract.
- 14:27Speaker 7: And Jalen Brown has checked off every single box and
- 14:30Speaker 7: so they didn't have a choice but to give him
- 14:33Speaker 7: that money and that contract. So if the teams around
- 14:36Speaker 7: the league are saying that the contract is mad, it's
- 14:38Speaker 7: not bad. It's not Jalen Brown that he's that He's
- 14:41Speaker 7: won all of those and again he's probably the only
- 14:45Speaker 7: one that I can think of that has been all
- 14:48Speaker 7: NBA first team consistently to check off all the box
- 14:51Speaker 7: boxes to be able to be at that super max
- 14:56Speaker 7: seventy million dollars a year contract. And I guarantee, I'm
- 15:00Speaker 7: not gonna guarantee because I don't know, but I would
- 15:02Speaker 7: almost promise you that that's what. It also came down
- 15:05Speaker 7: to the same thing that everyone was saying that it
- 15:07Speaker 7: came down with Luca Dodgers. They didn't want to pay
- 15:10Speaker 7: him seventy or seventy five million dollars a year.
- 15:12Speaker 6: Oh, definitely not.
- 15:13Speaker 8: Now, you know again, depending on whether you do the
- 15:17Speaker 8: eye test or you look at analytics. Analytically speaking, Yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 8: Jaylen Brown has some things that might be why Brad
- 15:25Speaker 8: Stevens said, we I think we can do better. We
- 15:27Speaker 8: can find a better number two for cheaper and we
- 15:30Speaker 8: can develop that first and foremost in the past three
- 15:33Speaker 8: seasons basically since he signed this contract, Jayalen Brown or
- 15:36Speaker 8: the Boston Celtics are thirty six and six without Jalen Brown.
- 15:40Speaker 8: Oh yeah, they can win. So they can win. You
- 15:42Speaker 8: kind of saw that in Game seven against Philly in
- 15:46Speaker 8: the playoff series as well, when he sat Boston was
- 15:50Speaker 8: actually his on off was actually in favor of Boston
- 15:55Speaker 8: when he sat as opposed to when he was on
- 15:57Speaker 8: the court. I don't know again until Boston or Brad
- 16:01Speaker 8: Stevens or whomever comes out with the rationale why they
- 16:05Speaker 8: went ahead and pulled the trigger for such a measly return,
- 16:10Speaker 8: that this one's gonna be a head scratcher, only, like
- 16:14Speaker 8: I say, at least in recent memory, only comparable to
- 16:18Speaker 8: the Luca Dacin Daunchin's trade from Dallas to la.
- 16:22Speaker 7: We thought this was just gonna be a one break conversation.
- 16:24Speaker 7: We are absolutely gonna have to continue. This was coming
- 16:27Speaker 7: back in just a moment. You're listening to Chip Hower

- 17:28Speaker 12: I might have to actually say play caller, because when
- 17:31Speaker 12: you think about Lane Kiffin, what do you think.
- 17:33Speaker 6: About development of quarterbacks?
- 17:34Speaker 12: I think about his play calling that too. I can
- 17:36Speaker 12: remember the one sometimes when Renegade when is it Alabama?
- 17:41Speaker 12: And he just looked at the matchup and assus ball snapping,
- 17:45Speaker 12: threw his his his clipboard in the air.

- 18:32Speaker 7: until like twenty thirty seven. Yeah, somewhere in there we
- 18:36Speaker 7: won't have another Saturday July the fourth until then.
- 18:39Speaker 8: I was gonna say, I can promise you when NBC
- 18:43Speaker 8: got the MLB package and they looked at this. They
- 18:48Speaker 8: went to Aristas like, whatever, we got to pay for
- 18:51Speaker 8: the world, because we're going to play the dog out
- 18:54Speaker 8: of that on the latter.
- 18:55Speaker 6: Wait, you mentioned this the records, like, who who owns them? Now?
- 18:58Speaker 6: Because they don't ignorant? I don't know. I just remember
- 19:01Speaker 6: because they had Whitney for.
- 19:03Speaker 8: I just always associated with Clive Davis. Yes, and passed away.
- 19:07Speaker 7: And I know Chicago who owns that portfolio of music history?
- 19:13Speaker 6: Wow? Yeah, we'll have to look that one up.

- 19:23Speaker 6: Thank you so much for being here with us today.
- 19:25Speaker 10: Yeah, no, thank you both for having me.
- 19:27Speaker 8: Okay, real quick, it was VJ. Edgecombe. That's the original
- 19:31Speaker 8: the original offer that Boston was willing to accept for
- 19:34Speaker 8: Jalen Brown was VJ. Edgecomb and five first round draft picks.
- 19:38Speaker 7: Well and and for for Philly. Wait, so you're saying
- 19:43Speaker 7: that's what Boston asked for Philly. Okay, yeah, Philly's not
- 19:45Speaker 7: gonna do that. No, why would they.
- 19:48Speaker 8: Again, because here's it's your first offer.
- 19:50Speaker 7: Well, everybody knows that Jalen wants like Jalen's wanted out
- 19:57Speaker 7: unless they were gonna pay him, and Boston wasn't going
- 19:59Speaker 7: to pay him.
- 19:59Speaker 6: And so here we are with this situation that.
- 20:03Speaker 7: And I was thinking this as you were trying to
- 20:05Speaker 7: like put put in who they were trading for, what
- 20:07Speaker 7: that first offer was, for all of those things. You
- 20:10Speaker 7: were trying to apply logic to the situation. And there
- 20:14Speaker 7: is none other than Boston just showed showed that they
- 20:19Speaker 7: needed to get rid of him.
- 20:21Speaker 6: They didn't like.
- 20:22Speaker 7: It wasn't a well maybe we will, It wasn't a okay,
- 20:26Speaker 7: we think we have to know they needed to get
- 20:29Speaker 7: rid of him. And for Jalen Brown, like I here's
- 20:32Speaker 7: the other thing I thought, like, I understand why in
- 20:35Speaker 7: the last three years he's been on the trading block
- 20:37Speaker 7: for Kevin Durant, he has been on the trading block
- 20:41Speaker 7: for Gianni Santa Tecumpo, and now they just said we're
- 20:44Speaker 7: gonna trade you like period And so why would you
- 20:48Speaker 7: why would he want to be there?
- 20:50Speaker 8: Oh no, I mean again, there's no question that Boston
- 20:56Speaker 8: was gonna have to deal him away.
- 20:59Speaker 6: It to you, honest, Trae didn't go that.
- 21:01Speaker 8: Yeah, it be honest. Trade you you have you have
- 21:04Speaker 8: now soured the milk. I just go back to the
- 21:09Speaker 8: timing of it, because again, and I'm not saying they
- 21:12Speaker 8: were in competition for Lebron, but that, as we were
- 21:17Speaker 8: talking about on the show yesterday, that is going to
- 21:19Speaker 8: be the the stone in the pond with ripples that
- 21:24Speaker 8: you might be able to be a part of something
- 21:26Speaker 8: at some point that you get more for Jalen Brown
- 21:28Speaker 8: than what you ultimately did, and especially to whom you
- 21:30Speaker 8: sent him to that I again, that's kind of what
- 21:34Speaker 8: I go back to. It just seems like this was
- 21:36Speaker 8: extraordinarily rushed because there's no NBA trade trade deadline till February.
- 21:42Speaker 8: There were again, there was no clock on this. There
- 21:45Speaker 8: was no you know, no threat that oh, Jalen's not
- 21:48Speaker 8: even gonna come to you know, to o TA during
- 21:52Speaker 8: during the I mean, there was nothing that necessitated this
- 21:56Speaker 8: other than what typically will come down the pike. Is
- 22:02Speaker 8: Brad Stevens says, my owner said I had to do something.
- 22:05Speaker 7: Well, I mean it'll be something along those lines, and
- 22:08Speaker 7: I mean, or it could just be and and I
- 22:11Speaker 7: think thankfully they are all showing the the level of
- 22:14Speaker 7: professional professionalism that you have to but I also think
- 22:18Speaker 7: over this last week, Jalen was just like, get me
- 22:22Speaker 7: out of here. Oh yeah, and and and and here
- 22:25Speaker 7: was the only ultimatum he would have and the only
- 22:27Speaker 7: ultimatum I'm imagining that he gave was especially if y'all
- 22:31Speaker 7: aren't going to give me my extension, I want out
- 22:35Speaker 7: of the building now. Yeah, and and and maybe that
- 22:39Speaker 7: was the the Celtics wanting to to land on that
- 22:44Speaker 7: and knowing that they have Jason Tatum and the Wings
- 22:47Speaker 7: and I'm just like they that has always been.
- 22:50Speaker 6: Jason Tatum's team, no matter how.
- 22:52Speaker 7: Well Jalen Brown has played, no matter in their championship run,
- 22:57Speaker 7: he Jalen Brown was the Finals MVP, not Jason.
- 23:00Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 6: I know.
- 23:00Speaker 8: Well, so again I was talking about in the last
- 23:03Speaker 8: three years, Boston has been thirty six and six without
- 23:07Speaker 8: Jalen Brown. So just to give you an idea, here
- 23:09Speaker 8: is the win percentages since let's go back to twenty
- 23:13Speaker 8: the twenty two to twenty three season, so with with Brown,
- 23:17Speaker 8: Boston had a six eighty seven, seven forty three, seventy three,
- 23:21Speaker 8: and then six sixty two win percentage without Brown over
- 23:25Speaker 8: those same four seasons, seven thirty three, one thousand percent
- 23:31Speaker 8: eighty nine eight point eight.
- 23:33Speaker 7: So how many games did they play that they didn't
- 23:35Speaker 7: lose without him? That they didn't Yeah, you said they
- 23:38Speaker 7: won a thousand percent, Like they were.
- 23:40Speaker 8: Twelve to zero in the twenty three twenty four season
- 23:43Speaker 8: without Jalen Brown.
- 23:48Speaker 7: As analytical as I know, the Celtics organization is right now,
- 23:53Speaker 7: like that's all they were looking at is what their
- 23:58Speaker 7: team does. Would you shoot a lot of threes? Which
- 24:00Speaker 7: Dalen Brown does not shoot a lot of threes? That
- 24:03Speaker 7: they have proven that they can win with those stats.
- 24:08Speaker 7: They can, They've proven that they can win without them.
- 24:09Speaker 7: And like you said in that first break, they can
- 24:13Speaker 7: get Paul George. Ain't that the cheap number two options,
- 24:17Speaker 7: but they can get a cheaper number two, and maybe
- 24:20Speaker 7: they're gonna.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Look to deal.
- 24:21Speaker 7: Maybe they're trying to get this done quicker so that
- 24:23Speaker 7: they can try to deal Paul George for something else.
- 24:25Speaker 6: I don't know what that is.
- 24:26Speaker 7: Or what that looks like, but they're they're they're trying
- 24:29Speaker 7: to move quickly and get that done. And now you've
- 24:34Speaker 7: got me trying to put logic into something that isn't there.
- 24:36Speaker 8: That's what I'm saying.
- 24:37Speaker 7: There's we're putting we're putting square pegs in round holes
- 24:41Speaker 7: trying to find the logic of it.
- 24:42Speaker 10: What was Brown's contract was on about fifty million a year?
- 24:46Speaker 10: Was it?
- 24:46Speaker 8: Let's see, uh this year and next year? Is it's
- 24:52Speaker 8: the max, isn't it?
- 24:53Speaker 7: Yeah, he's on a current MAX contract for the neck
- 24:55Speaker 7: and they had him for the next three years.
- 24:57Speaker 8: And he was he was eligible, he'd be eligible for
- 24:59Speaker 8: an extension uh in that third year, which would take
- 25:03Speaker 8: him up to So I think currently he's fifty.
- 25:05Speaker 6: Four millions somewhere in.
- 25:07Speaker 8: There, and then into seven fifty seven, thank you, and
- 25:10Speaker 8: then in three year three it would increase to well
- 25:14Speaker 8: over seventy million.
- 25:15Speaker 9: Yes, so yeah, yeah, I think you know, like you said,
- 25:20Speaker 9: cheaper number two right.
- 25:22Speaker 8: Well, and and again in a league as as we
- 25:25Speaker 8: if you pointed out as we've been talking about, in
- 25:27Speaker 8: a league where the current CBA has has really made it,
- 25:32Speaker 8: if you hit that second apron, your team is being
- 25:35Speaker 8: just destroyed, destroyed. It is all about finding the efficiencies
- 25:40Speaker 8: and if if you believe you can develop a cheaper,
- 25:45Speaker 8: less costly number two, you're gonna take it, because I mean,
- 25:49Speaker 8: that's the only advantage you have the the current the
- 25:53Speaker 8: currency right now, in the league is draft picks. It
- 25:55Speaker 8: is not. It is not the big stars.
- 25:58Speaker 7: And and here's something that I'll thinking up about earlier
- 26:01Speaker 7: today of what the NBA wants itself to be, because
- 26:06Speaker 7: they've also you're right, and pres San Presty and Oklahoma
- 26:11Speaker 7: State have shown that if you have the intelligence to
- 26:15Speaker 7: really manage and and scout well on draft picks, that
- 26:20Speaker 7: is the best currency you can have. And so now
- 26:23Speaker 7: the NBA is legislating out dynasty type teams because of
- 26:27Speaker 7: the second apron but also now and I thought it
- 26:31Speaker 7: was stupid for them to do this anyway, they're really
- 26:33Speaker 7: kind of starting to legislate, like what are draft picks
- 26:35Speaker 7: for now? If you can't stockpiling them doesn't do any
- 26:38Speaker 7: good if because if you can't do top three three
- 26:41Speaker 7: years in a row and top five, well, I forget
- 26:43Speaker 7: what the other stipulation was with the new with the
- 26:45Speaker 7: new anti tank, but those are things like I don't
- 26:49Speaker 7: I have no idea what the NBA is looking for anymore.
- 26:53Speaker 8: Well, I think it goes back to the central issue
- 26:57Speaker 8: the league has, where the product during the for the
- 27:02Speaker 8: majority of the regular season is just not enjoyable to watch.
- 27:07Speaker 15: And.
- 27:09Speaker 8: You're trying you're you're trying to correct so many things
- 27:13Speaker 8: and there's not a silver bullet that that solves your problem.
- 27:17Speaker 8: And so at the same time, you're you're trying to
- 27:21Speaker 8: to level, to level the playing field from the standpoint
- 27:24Speaker 8: of having the first apron and separate aprons so that
- 27:27Speaker 8: these teams can be You're not You're not seeing the
- 27:31Speaker 8: super dynasties where all the stars congregate on one team
- 27:35Speaker 8: because the owner is willing to forego the luxury tax
- 27:38Speaker 8: because they've got more money than than well just about
- 27:41Speaker 8: anyone in the world looking at you, Steve Bomer, doesn't
- 27:44Speaker 8: always equate to success. But uh, at the same time,
- 27:51Speaker 8: teams that are trying to to rebuild basically are just
- 27:56Speaker 8: throwing away a season, i e. The Utah Jazz and
- 27:59Speaker 8: the washing and Washington Wizards, which Washington all this, you
- 28:02Speaker 8: know that may actually show based on their draft, their
- 28:07Speaker 8: draft this year and in addition to some of the
- 28:09Speaker 8: folks they brought in, they might actually be an attractive
- 28:12Speaker 8: team to watch next year. I'm not saying they're going
- 28:14Speaker 8: to be competitive, but they might be like what Charlotte
- 28:16Speaker 8: was this year, and what you saw was Charlotte. Charlotte
- 28:19Speaker 8: went ahead even after probably their most successful year really ever, they've.
- 28:25Speaker 6: Dealt those then they broke up the team.
- 28:27Speaker 8: They broke up the team, and they're gonna they're gonna
- 28:29Speaker 8: try and try and do it again. You we might
- 28:35Speaker 8: be we might have to look at this, you know,
- 28:37Speaker 8: three to five years down the road and say, while
- 28:40Speaker 8: Adam Silver was the most progressive commissioner when he took
- 28:44Speaker 8: over the job from David Stern, he was not the
- 28:47Speaker 8: man who who was needed to guide this league through
- 28:52Speaker 8: a difficult period of time in regards to putting a
- 28:57Speaker 8: competitive product on the court to compete against the NFL
- 29:03Speaker 8: and the other sports that you've seen a ride arise.
- 29:08Speaker 8: And I would even say the WNBA in its popularity
- 29:12Speaker 8: on a percentage basis, has probably seen more, definitely seen
- 29:17Speaker 8: more growth than what the NBA has been able to
- 29:19Speaker 8: at least retain in the last two to three years.
- 29:23Speaker 7: Made what has always made the NBA as successful and
- 29:28Speaker 7: as popular as it was has been dynasties and keeping
- 29:33Speaker 7: your stars together. And regardless of the fact that you
- 29:37Speaker 7: know what, there may have been eight to ten teams
- 29:42Speaker 7: over the history, over the course of the history of
- 29:44Speaker 7: the NBA that have only ever won that didn't ever
- 29:47Speaker 7: impact the popularity of the sport. All of this is
- 29:52Speaker 7: when you're watering it down. This isn't the NFL. There
- 29:54Speaker 7: aren't fifty three players on each team like when you're
- 29:57Speaker 7: watering it down this much. That's what That's the other
- 29:59Speaker 7: part why people aren't wanting to watch. They don't know
- 30:01Speaker 7: who or what or whatever they're watching when they're looking
- 30:04Speaker 7: at the games.
- 30:04Speaker 8: Now, I mean, I go back to to to the
- 30:08Speaker 8: fact of what made the nineties such an incredible period
- 30:13Speaker 8: of time to watch the NBA. It wasn't the scoring,
- 30:16Speaker 8: Oh no, it was it was physical basketball. But much
- 30:21Speaker 8: like with Major League Baseball, in the NFL, everyone all
- 30:26Speaker 8: the metrics came back, Oh we want to see more scoring.
- 30:29Speaker 8: So all the rules skew towards a more offensive game,
- 30:33Speaker 8: to the point where now the NBA All Star Game
- 30:36Speaker 8: is just a sleeping joke.
- 30:38Speaker 6: Can't stand that.
- 30:39Speaker 8: You know you're gonna get a two hundred point All
- 30:40Speaker 8: Star Game at some point, maybe that's the direction you
- 30:44Speaker 8: need to go back to change, Go go back on
- 30:47Speaker 8: some of the on some of the officiating rules to
- 30:49Speaker 8: make this more of a defensive, defensive lead.
- 30:52Speaker 7: Whether it's baseball, whether it's the NFL, whether it's the
- 30:55Speaker 7: NBA or hockey, like scoring gets you the casual fan.
- 31:00Speaker 7: But you know who's not going to watch eighty two
- 31:01Speaker 7: regular season basketball games, the casual fan.
- 31:04Speaker 6: And so I think that's you. You're You're trying to bring.
- 31:08Speaker 7: In as many casual fans as you want, but they're
- 31:10Speaker 7: not the ones that are going to be there during
- 31:13Speaker 7: the regular season when you need TV TV eyeballs as much. Oh,
- 31:18Speaker 7: we'll see did and did Travis kelcey and did they
- 31:23Speaker 7: get married?
- 31:23Speaker 1: Now?
- 31:24Speaker 8: The red thing it's happening this weekend.
- 31:28Speaker 6: Okay, that's the message.
- 31:29Speaker 9: There's a something tonight, is what you know. The tmzs
- 31:33Speaker 9: of the world are saying. And then there's a big
- 31:35Speaker 9: I think a big party Friday or Saturday at Mass
- 31:39Speaker 9: massa rearguarden.
- 31:39Speaker 6: You had talked about that and I just saw to
- 31:41Speaker 6: him like did it already happen?
- 31:42Speaker 7: I am not, But when it's on TV in front
- 31:45Speaker 7: of me, I'm just looking at it to try to
- 31:47Speaker 7: see what's going on. We'll be right back after the

- 35:05Speaker 1: Listen to the Houston estras on this thanks to Kelly Birds.
- 35:34Speaker 7: Here it is a goop slightly transformed, just a bit
- 35:38Speaker 7: of a break from the norm, just a little something
- 35:41Speaker 7: to break from anotony of all that hardcore dance that
- 35:44Speaker 7: it's gotten to be a little bit out of control,
- 35:46Speaker 7: the school to dance, But what about a groove?
- 35:48Speaker 6: The souls and moves romance, give.
- 35:51Speaker 17: Me a sways and if it ain't broken, then don't

- 36:03Speaker 6: on the way back because it's the sum of time.
- 36:07Speaker 6: So I know we've done this to coming up.
- 36:09Speaker 7: What are the staples of Jason and Jared taking over
- 36:13Speaker 7: the show?
- 36:16Speaker 8: Janet Janet during this well, I mean there's a year
- 36:21Speaker 8: round it's Janet. Yes, in the fall and winter it's
- 36:28Speaker 8: the Thunderstorm, and then in the summer Dave Matthews, which
- 36:35Speaker 8: we'll get to, I would just say it's significantly better
- 36:40Speaker 8: bumper music. Uh.
- 36:43Speaker 7: Then we we opened it up, did you Hickscord opens
- 36:45Speaker 7: it up a little bit more.
- 36:46Speaker 8: Shots fired, shots like Ty Cobb said, you know if
- 36:53Speaker 8: if you're if you can do it, it ain't showing off.
- 36:55Speaker 8: And I'm just saying I can do it.
- 36:56Speaker 7: So I'm just because I mean, obviously this is a
- 36:58Speaker 7: song that we that that we play.
- 37:01Speaker 6: Uh, what's the name that Gummitt? What's the other summertime song?
- 37:05Speaker 8: Oh, it's gonna play. I mean it's we're going into
- 37:10Speaker 8: the July fourth weekend, gotta play the summer.
- 37:14Speaker 6: So, yeah, those are the stables.
- 37:15Speaker 7: Jason Jared audre in today for Chip who is I Yeah,

- 37:39Speaker 6: know it's our time.
- 37:40Speaker 8: So we're gonna we're gonna deviate from NBA real quick.
- 37:45Speaker 8: The other reason I wanted order to come in as
- 37:48Speaker 8: an experience n C double a athlete. In addition to you, Jason.
- 37:52Speaker 6: Way younger than I.
- 37:54Speaker 8: I know, yes, she she has recent bona fides. But
- 37:58Speaker 8: there's been a lot that has occurred in the NCAA
- 38:02Speaker 8: uh here of late, some of it obviously embarrassing coming
- 38:07Speaker 8: out of Lubbock. But one of the things that is
- 38:10Speaker 8: going into effect and is going to have an impact
- 38:14Speaker 8: is the new five year rules. So Audra, I wanted
- 38:16Speaker 8: to give the floor to you to to open up
- 38:18Speaker 8: the discussion on this.
- 38:19Speaker 9: So just summarize it, right, because obviously there's a lot.
- 38:23Speaker 9: It's very new, right, so there's a lot out there
- 38:26Speaker 9: right now.
- 38:27Speaker 10: Even when Nan simwily.
- 38:28Speaker 9: Was talking about it, right and you were hearing, Hey,
- 38:31Speaker 9: this is going to pass, this is going to go through.
- 38:33Speaker 9: There's a lot of false information out there, so just
- 38:36Speaker 9: want to I'm gonna try to do my best to
- 38:38Speaker 9: kind of clarify what is this, right and what's involved
- 38:41Speaker 9: in it.
- 38:42Speaker 10: So it's only affecting Division one.
- 38:44Speaker 9: So that's something that you know, I've gotten questions on
- 38:48Speaker 9: from you know a lot about like is this going
- 38:50Speaker 9: across the born Like now it's just a vision one, right, no.
- 38:54Speaker 10: Red shirts anymore.
- 38:56Speaker 9: Which is crazy to think about, right, So you're not
- 38:59Speaker 9: gonna have you know, your freshman quarterback.
- 39:02Speaker 10: You know, oh, you played in four games, wasn't good enough.
- 39:04Speaker 10: Now let's ride shirt them.
- 39:06Speaker 9: That's not a thing anymore, right, So that's gonna be
- 39:10Speaker 9: I think obviously really affecting power forwards, football.
- 39:13Speaker 10: Basketball, all that stuff.
- 39:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 39:16Speaker 9: And then the time window is interesting, so really strict
- 39:19Speaker 9: time window for it. It's as soon as you graduate
- 39:22Speaker 9: high school or up until you turn nineteen is the
- 39:25Speaker 9: time that you have to go, right, and that's where
- 39:28Speaker 9: your clock starts ticking.
- 39:29Speaker 10: So that's something that's really new.
- 39:31Speaker 9: So you know, some of the soccers of the world
- 39:33Speaker 9: and some of the soccer players of the world that
- 39:35Speaker 9: especially like Europeans coming over at age twenty twenty one,
- 39:40Speaker 9: you know, coming to play. That's not happening now, right,
- 39:42Speaker 9: So that's something that's I think going to affect maybe
- 39:46Speaker 9: not necessarily like football, basketball, baseball, right, but definitely I
- 39:50Speaker 9: think soccer will be affected by that big time and
- 39:53Speaker 9: then very limited exceptions. So the different waivers and SOBA
- 39:58Speaker 9: has it is going to be you know that we're seeing,
- 40:02Speaker 9: you know, some of these powerful athletes get it's not
- 40:04Speaker 9: gonna be a thing. It's gonna be incredibly limited on
- 40:07Speaker 9: some of these other waivers they have going on. So
- 40:09Speaker 9: that's the best I can explain on the on that
- 40:13Speaker 9: as simple as I can make it.
- 40:14Speaker 7: My first question is going to be does so you're
- 40:18Speaker 7: saying it's only in Division one, so you got five
- 40:22Speaker 7: years no matter that that clock starts, no matter what.
- 40:24Speaker 7: So you can't go to JUCO, play your two years
- 40:27Speaker 7: in JUCO and then go Division two for a couple
- 40:30Speaker 7: of years and then try to come up and play.
- 40:32Speaker 7: So once that clock starts at nineteen and you may
- 40:36Speaker 7: or may not remember this, but wasn't that like that
- 40:39Speaker 7: used to be always you once you declared for the
- 40:42Speaker 7: clearing house, your clock started, So wait when and maybe
- 40:45Speaker 7: and maybe that's what I'm misunderstanding. When did that stop?
- 40:49Speaker 7: And why are they having to put this rule back
- 40:51Speaker 7: in place?
- 40:51Speaker 9: I think it's more so to I know, the President
- 40:55Speaker 9: signed something in the law not too long ago with
- 40:57Speaker 9: this whole you only have five years, So I think
- 40:59Speaker 9: then simple then had to respond to that, Right, how
- 41:01Speaker 9: do we handle that? What are the what what can
- 41:03Speaker 9: we put into place that's going to align with that?
- 41:06Speaker 9: You know, and obviously this is because of Nil. All
- 41:09Speaker 9: of this is because of Nil ultimately, so I think,
- 41:14Speaker 9: you know, let's look at you know, is it who
- 41:18Speaker 9: was at Miami as the quarterback?
- 41:19Speaker 10: Is it Carson? Carson back?
- 41:20Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 41:21Speaker 12: Right?
- 41:21Speaker 10: So what was he on his seventh yere? Which is insane?
- 41:25Speaker 12: Think about?
- 41:26Speaker 9: You know, And I watched a press conference he did
- 41:29Speaker 9: this past like fall, and he was like, you know,
- 41:32Speaker 9: they're talking about like, hey, what are you studying?
- 41:34Speaker 10: He's like, I'm not.
- 41:35Speaker 6: He was a professional, a professional student.
- 41:38Speaker 9: So I think also sensibly he's looking at this going,
- 41:42Speaker 9: you know, we sell student athlete, student athlete, right, yeah,
- 41:47Speaker 9: and you laugh and I also laugh, okay at that.
- 41:50Speaker 9: So I think for them, does this allow Dan stable
- 41:53Speaker 9: A to take more control of like trying to go
- 41:56Speaker 9: student athlete. Now you have five years, that's it, Like
- 41:59Speaker 9: you're not it's going to linger around you. Three master's
- 42:02Speaker 9: degrees and you know, just to stay in the game
- 42:04Speaker 9: so you can make millions of dollars, you know through
- 42:07Speaker 9: an il. So it's just I don't know, I think
- 42:10Speaker 9: that's then Sibley's way of trying to maybe get back
- 42:13Speaker 9: to student athletes.
- 42:14Speaker 10: Student athlete, get your degree.
- 42:16Speaker 7: We are going to take a quick break, and that's
- 42:19Speaker 7: why I'm I'm very glad that we started with this
- 42:21Speaker 7: one and we can move other stuff back a little
- 42:23Speaker 7: bit because I want to stay on this for a minute.

- 46:02Speaker 6: Do you ever? Do you ever lose your flip flops

- 46:05Speaker 8: Never went to a film party. I was gonna say
- 46:08Speaker 8: that there's there's nothing, and I'm Audrey's okay. I was
- 46:14Speaker 8: about saying I really can't there there's nothing I find
- 46:17Speaker 8: desirable because A just whenever my clothing's even slightly damped,
- 46:25Speaker 8: it's just completely uncomfortable.
- 46:27Speaker 6: Moist.
- 46:27Speaker 8: Yeah, I avoided the M word for that exactly reason.
- 46:34Speaker 7: So I and I am now very glad that that
- 46:37Speaker 7: our special guest is here today because you've dropped some knowledge,
- 46:40Speaker 7: and if you've ever and everyone that has listened to
- 46:43Speaker 7: Jared and I, especially for these last couple of years,
- 46:46Speaker 7: we have been railing on the n C Double A
- 46:50Speaker 7: and the lack of teeth that they have and the
- 46:54Speaker 7: lack of control that that they have probably never had.
- 46:59Speaker 6: But it's just.
- 47:00Speaker 7: Really showcased itself in the last decade, even more so
- 47:03Speaker 7: in the last five years. And so now you've told
- 47:06Speaker 7: us about this five year rule that has just been
- 47:08Speaker 7: implemented and really trying to have the NCAA say ooh
- 47:13Speaker 7: we got strength again. And I don't think that that
- 47:16Speaker 7: is actually going to be the case.
- 47:19Speaker 10: No, there there's gonna there's always loopholes.
- 47:22Speaker 9: If there's one thing I learned working in Divisional one
- 47:24Speaker 9: athletics for the.
- 47:25Speaker 10: Last eight years, it was there's always a loophole with anything, yes,
- 47:29Speaker 10: and it's not it.
- 47:30Speaker 9: And so I think looking at it, you know, in
- 47:33Speaker 9: this five year thing, I think there's upsides and downsides, right,
- 47:38Speaker 9: I think kind of looking at it, right, I think
- 47:41Speaker 9: an upside is we're going to see stronger transfer.
- 47:44Speaker 10: Classes across all sports.
- 47:46Speaker 9: Yes, like significantly stronger transfer classes. But with transferring, right,
- 47:52Speaker 9: And this is what I go back to somebody who
- 47:53Speaker 9: was a coach for a very long time. You know,
- 47:57Speaker 9: the student athlete experience graduating on time, degrees, credits, transferring,
- 48:03Speaker 9: all these crazy things. Right, it just it's gotten so
- 48:07Speaker 9: out of control, and it honestly takes away I think
- 48:13Speaker 9: from you know, and I'm all for like, you know,
- 48:16Speaker 9: for me when I was coaching, it's I really wanted
- 48:18Speaker 9: to see my kids graduate, right and no matter where
- 48:20Speaker 9: they and if they left and were and they want somewhere.
- 48:22Speaker 10: Else, I want I still want to see them graduate,
- 48:24Speaker 10: you know, because your sports career.
- 48:27Speaker 9: Can end in you know, like that in a minute,
- 48:30Speaker 9: you know, injury, anything can happen. Getting a degree is
- 48:34Speaker 9: important in my opinion, and I know there's many people
- 48:36Speaker 9: out there that will disagree with that, and you know,
- 48:39Speaker 9: I get it. It's but ultimately, you know, when these
- 48:43Speaker 9: student athletes leave and they're done and they may not
- 48:46Speaker 9: be good enough to play professionally or you know, they
- 48:49Speaker 9: need that degree, and so transferring across the board has
- 48:53Speaker 9: just gotten so out of hand. I think the NCA
- 48:55Speaker 9: as well as looking at this five year rules, maybe
- 48:57Speaker 9: mitigating some of that, you know, but ultimately, yeah, I
- 49:02Speaker 9: can remember the day of transfer portal dropped, and I
- 49:05Speaker 9: can remember logging into that for the first time and.
- 49:07Speaker 10: Going, what is this?
- 49:08Speaker 6: I can't even imagine what that is like.
- 49:12Speaker 10: It's it's the most bizarre. It was so bizarre.
- 49:14Speaker 9: To look at. And what made it really difficult. You know,
- 49:18Speaker 9: the platform itself. You log in, you just see the
- 49:22Speaker 9: kid's name where they played. You get very little information
- 49:25Speaker 9: on the kid in that actual portal. And then it
- 49:27Speaker 9: created this whole other business where there's these agents that
- 49:30Speaker 9: are just running these like hey, like if you pay
- 49:33Speaker 9: us to pay this amount of money to us, you can,
- 49:36Speaker 9: we will give you on every single kid in that portal.
- 49:40Speaker 9: And it's it's just gotten so out of control in
- 49:42Speaker 9: my opinion.
- 49:43Speaker 7: Well, and Jared and I have talked about this, like
- 49:46Speaker 7: we don't think that the college sports has ever been
- 49:52Speaker 7: non professional, but these last six to seven to ten
- 49:56Speaker 7: years have really shown that it is. It is just
- 49:59Speaker 7: semi prefer sports. And what this and I get it,
- 50:03Speaker 7: the n C double A is is doing their best
- 50:06Speaker 7: to try to rain this back in. But there's zero chance,
- 50:10Speaker 7: Like whatever cliche you want to use, the genies out
- 50:13Speaker 7: of the bottle, they've opened Pandora's box, Like all of
- 50:16Speaker 7: those cliches are all out there now because that's where
- 50:20Speaker 7: we are, these student athletes are there.
- 50:22Speaker 6: There is zero chance you were going.
- 50:24Speaker 7: To be able to either not pay them to restrict
- 50:27Speaker 7: And here's the thing, like one of the first lawsuits
- 50:29Speaker 7: that I'm imagining going to come up is who are
- 50:32Speaker 7: you to tell me how long I can play?
- 50:33Speaker 6: Now? Like?
- 50:34Speaker 8: What?
- 50:34Speaker 7: What? And they and the exact same way that Soresby
- 50:37Speaker 7: was able to find some district court judge to to
- 50:40Speaker 7: be And he's not the only one.
- 50:41Speaker 6: Everyone that whatever it's been.
- 50:43Speaker 8: I mean, there are there are attorneys who specialize in
- 50:46Speaker 8: taking the n C double A to court and they win.
- 50:49Speaker 7: Yeah, because they know exactly what where where there There
- 50:51Speaker 7: are a lot of weak points, but they know where.
- 50:54Speaker 8: Think it's the biggest issue with the n C double
- 50:55Speaker 8: A is over the years you've had, the quality of
- 50:59Speaker 8: the attorneys you've had right stuff for THEA has gone
- 51:02Speaker 8: down and down and down, and so like you say,
- 51:04Speaker 8: there are there are a multitude of loopholes, and a
- 51:06Speaker 8: lot of the times they were in there by design
- 51:08Speaker 8: because there were certain institutions looking at you Texas, Michigan
- 51:11Speaker 8: and Ohio State and a couple other ones and maybe
- 51:13Speaker 8: Notre Dame that purposely want those in there because they
- 51:16Speaker 8: want to exploit those anytime the situation arises to me,
- 51:22Speaker 8: as you pointed out, as soon as the dollars on
- 51:27Speaker 8: television contracts reached seven and eight figures, amateurism basically started
- 51:36Speaker 8: going out the windows. And then especially once coaching salaries
- 51:40Speaker 8: and I'm not trying to be offensive to you as
- 51:42Speaker 8: a former coach, but as soon as your coach salaries
- 51:45Speaker 8: started getting into the seven and eight yep figures, Meanwhile,
- 51:52Speaker 8: your athletes are only allowed two meals. You know, they're
- 51:57Speaker 8: only provided two meals a day, and they can't have
- 52:00Speaker 8: a job to pay for the third meal, right, I mean,
- 52:05Speaker 8: it's no wonder that this this farce that the NCUAA
- 52:10Speaker 8: had of amateurism gets blown up because you have created
- 52:13Speaker 8: a level of inequality that no one can justify, especially
- 52:17Speaker 8: with when you're talking about this conference is getting paid
- 52:21Speaker 8: a billion dollars per year to broadcast twelve twelve weeks
- 52:27Speaker 8: of games.
- 52:28Speaker 7: Well, and it goes back to what I was saying,
- 52:29Speaker 7: like the fact that none of this is going to
- 52:32Speaker 7: be collectively bargained because the nc DOUAA doesn't want to
- 52:36Speaker 7: give up any of the money that they're getting, and
- 52:38Speaker 7: that's all it is for them. Again, how are you
- 52:40Speaker 7: going to tell a student athlete how long they can play?
- 52:44Speaker 7: How are you going to tell a student athlete how
- 52:46Speaker 7: many times they can transfer if I don't want to
- 52:48Speaker 7: be here anymore, who are you to tell me I
- 52:50Speaker 7: don't want that I can't be at the school anymore.
- 52:52Speaker 7: All of those are and that's why those lawyers have
- 52:54Speaker 7: gotten so good because they know what those weak points are.
- 52:57Speaker 7: Because the nc DOUBLEA as long as they try, and
- 53:00Speaker 7: it was working. But now everyone is smart enough to
- 53:02Speaker 7: realize the NCAA can't can't restrict any.
- 53:05Speaker 8: Say correct me if I'm wrong, because I think I
- 53:06Speaker 8: read this, but I don't know if it was speculative
- 53:10Speaker 8: or if it was actually part of it. I think
- 53:11Speaker 8: is another part of the five year rule that you
- 53:13Speaker 8: can now only transfer twice during that five year period
- 53:17Speaker 8: of time.
- 53:17Speaker 9: Yeah, yes, which is taking away the you know, the
- 53:21Speaker 9: student athletes that were going just every year to new school,
- 53:24Speaker 9: which once again.
- 53:25Speaker 10: Goes back to what's happening on the academic side.
- 53:28Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 53:28Speaker 7: Well, and that's why I've always laughed and you and
- 53:30Speaker 7: I have to think I've talked about this too of
- 53:31Speaker 7: when for especially for football, because that's the big, the
- 53:34Speaker 7: big elephant in the room. The transfer portal for in
- 53:39Speaker 7: for football was like January fifteenth, like after the bowl
- 53:43Speaker 7: games were done, but most schools start the spring semester,
- 53:47Speaker 7: like within a few days at that, And so, yeah,
- 53:50Speaker 7: that is a very valid point of when like how
- 53:53Speaker 7: how does the academic part of being a student athlete
- 53:56Speaker 7: fit into that? And this is going to go into
- 53:58Speaker 7: something that's that's very per like what I get to
- 54:01Speaker 7: see on a a more close basis of like cause
- 54:04Speaker 7: I do radio for women's basketball and play by play
- 54:07Speaker 7: and so seeing like hearing the coaching staff and even
- 54:11Speaker 7: hearing coach Blair before, like having to re recruit your
- 54:16Speaker 7: team every year, every single year, Yes, like how can
- 54:21Speaker 7: you like that has got to be nerve racking as
- 54:25Speaker 7: a coach that not only are you trying to work
- 54:27Speaker 7: on bringing in new players, but you've got to make
- 54:29Speaker 7: sure that you're not losing your players.
- 54:31Speaker 6: And that goes into that.
- 54:32Speaker 7: And so I'm just like, this is a cluster of things,
- 54:36Speaker 7: Like I guess I want to give the ncaa like
- 54:41Speaker 7: a little bit of a pat on the head for
- 54:43Speaker 7: trying to say, hey, look at us, we're we're putting
- 54:45Speaker 7: we're trying to put some some guardrails back up there.
- 54:48Speaker 7: But the guardrails are made out of tissue paper because
- 54:50Speaker 7: they're not going to last, yes.
- 54:52Speaker 9: Not at all, And I would say, I look at
- 54:57Speaker 9: this would be the best example of the sport I
- 55:00Speaker 9: think that's transferring. The most basketball players are leaving every
- 55:04Speaker 9: single year and going somewhere new. Even at the mid
- 55:07Speaker 9: major Division one level, they're doing it. And it's like,
- 55:09Speaker 9: so now that will be mitigated hopefully, but we'll see,
- 55:13Speaker 9: you know what I mean. Like you said, I think
- 55:15Speaker 9: there's just going to be lawsuit after lawsuit. They're going
- 55:17Speaker 9: to have to I guarantee next year, if not in
- 55:19Speaker 9: two years something, there's going to be something else that
- 55:22Speaker 9: they're going to try to stop all this.
- 55:23Speaker 8: I think this past season we got to host either
- 55:27Speaker 8: at the end of the regular NCAA season or just
- 55:31Speaker 8: during March Madness, and at that point was the statistic
- 55:34Speaker 8: that sixty six percent of all men's basketball players had
- 55:40Speaker 8: entered the transfer portal. Two thirds. Yeah, and obviously I
- 55:46Speaker 8: think less than ten percent of them we're actually going
- 55:48Speaker 8: to move somewhere else.
- 55:50Speaker 6: Back Here's that's just as a.
- 55:53Speaker 7: Unless you know that your coach is going to completely
- 55:57Speaker 7: kick you off the team for putting your name in
- 55:59Speaker 7: the portal, why wouldn't you put your name in the portal,
- 56:02Speaker 7: especially in today's inn il Like I'm gonna see what
- 56:06Speaker 7: else I can get out there. And so that's why
- 56:08Speaker 7: for me, I'm looking at like this is there's I
- 56:12Speaker 7: applaud their attempt. I just I applaud their temp because
- 56:17Speaker 7: I do really think something needs to be to be
- 56:20Speaker 7: put in place, because again this is this is not
- 56:24Speaker 7: meant to be professional sports.
- 56:26Speaker 10: Correct.
- 56:27Speaker 7: However, you also, with the amount of money going on,
- 56:31Speaker 7: you can't you can't strong arm everybody the way the
- 56:33Speaker 7: NCAA has for the overwhelming majority of years. And like
- 56:37Speaker 7: you mentioned, Jared, how the coaches started to try to
- 56:40Speaker 7: keep the the money and everything just oh, this is
- 56:43Speaker 7: just for us, y'all are just no, that's not fair either.
- 56:46Speaker 7: There is a fair way to do it, and it
- 56:49Speaker 7: would be nice if if they figured that out. We
- 56:53Speaker 7: got a lot to talk about after the top of
- 56:55Speaker 7: the are too. We haven't even dipped into World Cup yet.
