- 0:09Speaker 1: What's going on. Welcome into another episode of the check
- 0:13Speaker 1: O Daily. It's Andrew decheco here, Eagles beat reporter Friendsidethebirds
- 0:17Speaker 1: dot com, and welcome into the official start of NFL
- 0:21Speaker 1: Free agency, which kicked off at four pm Eastern on Wednesday.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We'll get to the transactional news, and I also want
- 0:28Speaker 1: to update you all on some of the coaching titles,
- 0:32Speaker 1: because if you look in the Eagles Media Guide, the
- 0:36Speaker 1: full listing of all the coaches is there for you
- 0:39Speaker 1: to check out, and I want to delve into that
- 0:41Speaker 1: a little bit. But first let's get to the transaction
- 0:45Speaker 1: piece of the podcast, because there have been so many
- 0:48Speaker 1: comings and goings and I want to keep everyone abreast
- 0:51Speaker 1: as to the latest. The current news with the Philadelphia Eagles,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and they signed cornerback onee to a one year deal
- 1:02Speaker 1: worth up to fifteen million. They also signed tight end
- 1:05Speaker 1: Johnny Munt, who is a really strong blocker. I think
- 1:09Speaker 1: he's going to help that room and add a different
- 1:12Speaker 1: element that they were sorely lacking last season. So he
- 1:15Speaker 1: signs a one year deal. They re signed tight end
- 1:18Speaker 1: Grant cal Katara to a one year deal, and I
- 1:22Speaker 1: want to say this about Grant cal Katara before we
- 1:24Speaker 1: get any further, because I feel personally that the slander
- 1:28Speaker 1: directed at Grant cal Kata, especially last season, bordered on extreme.
- 1:34Speaker 1: He's not a bad tight end. He's actually a good
- 1:39Speaker 1: player within you know, relative to what his role is.
- 1:44Speaker 1: And if you expect him to play at the level
- 1:46Speaker 1: of Dallas Gotter, you're going to be mistaken. But he
- 1:49Speaker 1: is billed as a pass catching tight end and that's
- 1:52Speaker 1: what he does well. He was put into positions last
- 1:56Speaker 1: season that didn't suit his skill set, and the coaching
- 2:00Speaker 1: staff continue to deploy him in those ways. That's not
- 2:04Speaker 1: on Grant call Katara. That's on the coaching staff for
- 2:07Speaker 1: doing that. But I want to push back a little
- 2:10Speaker 1: bit on a lot of the negativity that I see
- 2:13Speaker 1: out there directed at Grant cal Kata. Look, he struggled
- 2:16Speaker 1: mightily as a blocker last season. No one's disputing that,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but to reach a conclusion that he's not a good player.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And I'm saying this because I saw a lot of
- 2:26Speaker 1: the comments when we put out there that Grant kal
- 2:31Speaker 1: Katara was re signing with the Eagles, and I thought
- 2:35Speaker 1: a lot of it was unfair. I'm gonna be honest,
- 2:37Speaker 1: it was unfair. If you want to criticize him as
- 2:40Speaker 1: a blocker, you're more than welcome to. He struggled there.
- 2:43Speaker 1: But to reach a conclusion that he's not a good
- 2:46Speaker 1: player or that the Eagles shouldn't have resigned him, and
- 2:50Speaker 1: maybe taking that to a drastic measure.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I mean, I don't agree with it. I don't agree
- 2:56Speaker 2: with it.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I think you have to look at each player for
- 3:00Speaker 1: who they are and what they are.
- 3:01Speaker 2: And he is a depth tight end.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So to expect him to step in there and be
- 3:06Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard, that's not going to happen. He's a number
- 3:10Speaker 1: two or in best case scenario, a third tight end,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and in that role he is fine. They also renegotiated
- 3:18Speaker 1: the deal for defensive back Michael Carter, who of course
- 3:20Speaker 1: they traded for ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Played
- 3:24Speaker 1: an eight games started one can give you safety versatility
- 3:27Speaker 1: in addition to playing Nickel. I also want to reiterate
- 3:31Speaker 1: that he was never released. He always remained with the team.
- 3:35Speaker 1: They extended defensive tackle Jordan Davis and Jordan Davis actually
- 3:41Speaker 1: spoke Wednesday at the Eagles complex and he talked about
- 3:48Speaker 1: the extension and where he's going to take his career
- 3:51Speaker 1: from here what he expects to do in the future.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And I always love listening to Jordan Davis speak, and
- 3:59Speaker 1: you can always you can just hear the energy, you
- 4:02Speaker 1: can just feel the energy. I should say whenever he speaks.
- 4:06Speaker 2: His laughter, his love for the game.
- 4:11Speaker 1: And that's a well deserved extension for Jordan Davis. The
- 4:15Speaker 1: Eagles have a building block for the future on the
- 4:17Speaker 1: defensive side.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Of the ball. Now we get to those who have departed.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Let's start with outside linebacker Jalen Phillips, who commanded a
- 4:29Speaker 1: massive contract from the Carolina Panthers, four years, one hundred
- 4:33Speaker 1: and twenty million, eighty guaranteed, I believe was what was reported.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Linebacker na Kobe Dean goes to the Raiders. Safety Read
- 4:41Speaker 1: Blanket Ship goes of the Texans. Wide receiver Jahan Dotson
- 4:44Speaker 1: goes to the Falcons. Offensive lineman Matt Pryor goes to
- 4:48Speaker 1: the Cardinals. Quarterback Sam Howell goes to the Cowboys, where
- 4:52Speaker 1: he's a in a quarterback room that also features former
- 4:57Speaker 1: Eagles quarterback Will Greer. By the way, who I think
- 5:00Speaker 1: when you look at all these different former NFL quarterbacks
- 5:04Speaker 1: that have become coaches, Will Greer really is an extension
- 5:07Speaker 1: of the coaching of the coaching staff. He's a veteran guy.
- 5:11Speaker 1: He did a lot for Jalen Hurts when he was
- 5:13Speaker 1: here in Philadelphia. And when you look at the Sean
- 5:16Speaker 1: Mannions and a lot of these quarterbacks Josh McCown that
- 5:20Speaker 1: are kind of on the ascent in the coaching world,
- 5:23Speaker 1: I think Will Greer will have a future there when
- 5:26Speaker 1: he decides to enter that realm, if.
- 5:29Speaker 2: He so chooses to.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Okay, got off topic there for a moment. Offensive lineman
- 5:34Speaker 1: Brett Toath goes to the forty nine Ers, and outside
- 5:38Speaker 1: linebacker Josh Ushe goes to the Dolphins, and as he's o,
- 5:41Speaker 1: Jalari goes to the Atlanta Falcons. So let's unpack some
- 5:47Speaker 1: of this really quick, because we talked about Phillips Dean
- 5:50Speaker 1: blanket ship dots, and I'm not going to say a
- 5:53Speaker 1: whole lot about Matt pryor Sam Howe because I talked
- 5:57Speaker 1: about them in different podcasts and what I gets an
- 6:00Speaker 1: overview of what I was expecting them to see in
- 6:04Speaker 1: free agency. I didn't expect either of them to come back.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Brettoath was an interesting one because, as many of you
- 6:12Speaker 1: have either read or heard me say. I thought that
- 6:15Speaker 1: he was one of the more underrated free agents for
- 6:17Speaker 1: the Eagles, and it made a lot of sense to
- 6:19Speaker 1: bring him back. And he probably didn't command a ton.
- 6:23Speaker 1: The numbers aren't out yet and we'll have to see
- 6:27Speaker 1: what that indicates. But I just thought that Brett Toath
- 6:30Speaker 1: was a player who got interior versatility. He started at guard,
- 6:35Speaker 1: he started at center four games for the Eagles, he
- 6:37Speaker 1: started last season, played three hundred and sixty three snaps.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Was a positive influence, especially on the younger lineman, imparting
- 6:46Speaker 1: that wisdom behind the scenes. And I go back to
- 6:50Speaker 1: the depth along the offensive line. Of course, the Eagles
- 6:52Speaker 1: are going to address it, but I look at it
- 6:55Speaker 1: in the sense of you had a player who has
- 6:58Speaker 1: come up through the ranks here with in Philadelphia. He's
- 7:01Speaker 1: not going to break the bank to keep him there,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and he gives you interior versatility. And he's also a
- 7:07Speaker 1: very instrumental piece in helping the offensive linemen that are
- 7:13Speaker 1: starting in our playing prominent roles behind the scenes, and
- 7:18Speaker 1: you know that, you know, he's an AD a certified
- 7:22Speaker 1: AD guy, much like the other player that I'm going
- 7:25Speaker 1: to talk about in a moment but I just want
- 7:27Speaker 1: to much like I said about Nakobe Dean, who I
- 7:31Speaker 1: enjoyed those conversations and it was a pleasure to cover
- 7:35Speaker 1: for those four years. So was Brett Toath for however
- 7:38Speaker 1: many years, but especially this season. We had a lot
- 7:40Speaker 1: of really great conversations, and we'll see. He may have
- 7:44Speaker 1: a chance to carve out a starting role with the
- 7:46Speaker 1: forty nine ers. But nevertheless, it was a good year
- 7:51Speaker 1: for him. It was a breakthrough. He showed a lot
- 7:54Speaker 1: of perseverance and a lot of character, battling through a
- 7:58Speaker 1: lot of the rosters, practice squad, back up, practice, squad elevation,
- 8:04Speaker 1: all those things, and I think that he really proved
- 8:08Speaker 1: that he's willing to stick with it and see it through.
- 8:11Speaker 2: So we'll see what the forty nine ers have in
- 8:13Speaker 2: store for him.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Josh hussa Ousha, another certified AD guy, got to Philadelphia,
- 8:21Speaker 1: signed the one year prove it deal and played just
- 8:25Speaker 1: two hundred and forty four defensive snaps twelve games and
- 8:30Speaker 1: had the one sack, and it was against Carson Wentz
- 8:33Speaker 1: in the Vikings game. And funnily enough, Josh and I
- 8:36Speaker 1: were actually talking leading up to that game about how
- 8:39Speaker 1: he was really trying to emphasize his power rush and
- 8:43Speaker 1: tap into that because he had the speed and he
- 8:45Speaker 1: had the finesse, but he was really trying to drill
- 8:49Speaker 1: the power rush and we spoke at length about that.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Fast forward to a couple days after he gets the sack,
- 8:57Speaker 1: his only sack as an Eagle, again, Carson wentz no less.
- 9:01Speaker 2: And it was a power rush. And when we saw.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Each other the following week, you know, he was smiling
- 9:07Speaker 1: ear to ear and talking about it and really trying
- 9:11Speaker 1: to refine that area and delve into it a little
- 9:14Speaker 1: bit more. Didn't play all that much once the Eagles
- 9:18Speaker 1: got Jalen Phillips at the trade deadline, once Brandon Graham
- 9:21Speaker 1: came out of retirement, I don't think that it was
- 9:24Speaker 1: through any fault of his own, because I thought for
- 9:27Speaker 1: the role that he was given, for the snaps he
- 9:29Speaker 1: was allotted, I thought he did a nice job.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I really did.
- 9:32Speaker 1: He outplayed his E'sojuli in training camp for sure, to
- 9:37Speaker 1: leap frog him in the proverbial pecking order, But there
- 9:41Speaker 1: just wasn't a role, especially when you have a coordinator
- 9:44Speaker 1: in Vic Fangio who doesn't traditionally rotate a heavy dose
- 9:47Speaker 1: of edge rushers four max on game day, and then
- 9:50Speaker 1: you have Brandon Graham who gave him, who gave the
- 9:52Speaker 1: Eagles that interior versatility. But anyway, Josh goes to the
- 9:56Speaker 1: Dolphins and he's gonna have an opportunity there his fourth
- 9:59Speaker 1: team in three years. We'll see if he has staying
- 10:02Speaker 1: power there and hopefully he gets a chance to showcase
- 10:06Speaker 1: more of what he can do defensively, because it was
- 10:08Speaker 1: a bit of a crowded house here in Philadelphia, and
- 10:11Speaker 1: I think for a team like Miami that seems like
- 10:13Speaker 1: they're ripping out the foundation he should. I would imagine
- 10:17Speaker 1: if he performs well in training camp, be able to
- 10:20Speaker 1: carve out a meaningful role on defense and be able
- 10:23Speaker 1: to help and revert back to becoming more of a
- 10:28Speaker 1: pass rusher and maybe not so much on special teams,
- 10:31Speaker 1: which is a lot of what he did here in
- 10:33Speaker 1: Philadelphia as he's Ojulari was a player that signed the
- 10:37Speaker 1: one year deal last offseason, and I think when you
- 10:40Speaker 1: look back on other free agent signings, many of us,
- 10:44Speaker 1: myself probably viewed the Jeli signing as probably the most
- 10:49Speaker 1: intriguing because he was a second round pick out of LSU.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Injuries have plagued him throughout his career, and maybe the
- 10:57Speaker 1: change of scenery would have helped unlock something in his game. Well,
- 11:00Speaker 1: he suffered a hamstring injury, didn't play all that much
- 11:03Speaker 1: before that. The hamstring injury put them on injured reserve,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and it wasn't until leading up to that playoff game
- 11:09Speaker 1: that his twenty one day practice window was open. But
- 11:12Speaker 1: I think each played just sixty seven snaps last year,
- 11:14Speaker 1: so he didn't make the impact that a lot expected.
- 11:19Speaker 2: But that's the way it goes.
- 11:21Speaker 1: You can't fault Howie Roseman the Eagles for taking that
- 11:23Speaker 1: kind of a swing because when you're looking for those
- 11:26Speaker 1: modest one year deals in that second wave of free agency,
- 11:31Speaker 1: just like I talked about with brieg Wohan though he's
- 11:32Speaker 1: not in the second wave, you look for players with
- 11:35Speaker 1: upside and you tend to bet on that because they
- 11:39Speaker 1: give you a high percentage or a high likelihood that
- 11:45Speaker 1: they will be able to harness that and become the
- 11:48Speaker 1: player that they were at some point in their career.
- 11:53Speaker 1: So that's the updated news as it pertains to the
- 11:57Speaker 1: transactions for the Eagles. I should also mention in that
- 12:00Speaker 1: full back Ben Van Sumeran, who was a restricted free agent,
- 12:03Speaker 1: did not receive a qualifying offer from the Eagles, and
- 12:06Speaker 1: as a result, he's now an unrestricted free agent. We'll
- 12:09Speaker 1: wait and see what happens there. Ben has always expressed
- 12:12Speaker 1: to me how much he loves Philadelphia. It's Philadelphia or nothing.
- 12:16Speaker 1: We'll see if that love is reciprocated. But they did
- 12:19Speaker 1: have plans for him last season, and unfortunately, he suffered
- 12:24Speaker 1: a gut wrenching season ending injury on the opening kickoff.
- 12:28Speaker 1: After being shelved last season about halfway through or twenty
- 12:33Speaker 1: twenty four with a knee injury that he suffered in practice,
- 12:37Speaker 1: he worked really hard to get back, always to suffer
- 12:40Speaker 1: a pateeller tendon injury, which is pretty severe. But I
- 12:44Speaker 1: saw him in the postgame locker room after the forty
- 12:47Speaker 1: nine Ers game. He was walking around all right. We'll
- 12:50Speaker 1: see how he is in terms of his recovery process,
- 12:53Speaker 1: but I have to imagine all things being equal, as
- 12:55Speaker 1: long as he's healthy. The Eagles would want to revisit
- 13:01Speaker 1: Van Sumern, who is an incredibly athletic. He can play
- 13:05Speaker 1: full back, he can play he was a linebacker here.
- 13:07Speaker 1: He's a special teams maven and he's probably not gonna
- 13:11Speaker 1: cost you a ton, So you bring him in and
- 13:13Speaker 1: you give him another looxie in the summer and see
- 13:16Speaker 1: where he is physically. But make no mistake about it,
- 13:20Speaker 1: they had plans for Van Sumern last year, and you
- 13:24Speaker 1: never want to make too much of the absence of
- 13:26Speaker 1: one player, of course, but the absences of Johnny Wilson
- 13:30Speaker 1: and Ben Van Sumer and I think really hurt the
- 13:32Speaker 1: Eagles foundationally because they could block and give you a
- 13:38Speaker 1: different type of skill set that they were lacking throughout
- 13:41Speaker 1: the year, and that was pretty evident. Other players did
- 13:44Speaker 1: a nice job in stepping in, whether it was Darius
- 13:46Speaker 1: Cooper or whether it was Cameron Lattu who transitioned from
- 13:50Speaker 1: tight end to fullback, but Van Sumer and Johnny Wilson
- 13:53Speaker 1: were players that when I was looking at the offense
- 13:56Speaker 1: going into the season, you could see define roles for
- 13:59Speaker 1: each player.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Okay, so let's get to the coaching staff. Oh.
- 14:05Speaker 1: I should also mention that this is per Zach Berman
- 14:07Speaker 1: of the Athletic Dallas. Goddard was not listed as a
- 14:10Speaker 1: free agent by the league. His void date has been
- 14:13Speaker 1: pushed back to Friday. A league source told the Athletic
- 14:16Speaker 1: this procedural move would give both sides a chance to
- 14:18Speaker 1: work out a contract extension. That tweet from Zach Berman
- 14:23Speaker 1: of the Athletic So that gives some more clarity on
- 14:26Speaker 1: the Dallas Goddard front and maybe the Eagles in Dallas
- 14:29Speaker 1: are able to work something out. There's still a need
- 14:32Speaker 1: there for a top tight end on the depth chart.
- 14:36Speaker 1: They don't have that. They have complimentary pieces, but they're
- 14:39Speaker 1: missing that top guy. So there's the updates as far
- 14:43Speaker 1: as all of the personnel. But let's get to the
- 14:46Speaker 1: coaching news because a lot of the names have stayed
- 14:49Speaker 1: the same. Nick Sirianni head coach, Michael Klay special teams coordinator,
- 14:53Speaker 1: Vic Fangio defensive coordinator.
- 14:56Speaker 2: But then you get to the new names, and I
- 14:57Speaker 2: want to run through them.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Sean Maddion offensive coordinator, Josh Gizzard offensive passing game coordinator,
- 15:05Speaker 1: Ryan Mahaffey run game coordinator, slash tight ends, Chris Cooper
- 15:10Speaker 1: offensive line Mike Pellegrino, who was the Bill's Nichols coach
- 15:16Speaker 1: last season.
- 15:17Speaker 2: He's listed as secondary.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Jerad Johnson senior offensive assistant slash special projects for the
- 15:26Speaker 1: head coach. That's his role. I was a little curious
- 15:31Speaker 1: as to what his actual role would be knowing that
- 15:33Speaker 1: they already had an abundance of offensive coaches.
- 15:36Speaker 2: But there you have it.
- 15:37Speaker 1: There adds a little bit more clarity to Jerad Johnson.
- 15:41Speaker 1: But I am interested to hear what the specifics or
- 15:45Speaker 1: learn what the specifics of his role roles entail.
- 15:50Speaker 3: Hey, I know a lot of you out there are
- 15:51Speaker 3: just like me. You either travel a lot for work
- 15:54Speaker 3: or you got a back to work policy and you're

- 16:00Speaker 3: I feel really secure with my family at home because
- 16:03Speaker 3: I've got simply Safe home alarm system. Traditional security systems
- 16:08Speaker 3: they only act after someone's already broken in. That's too late.

- 16:56Speaker 3: Philly fans, game day is stressful enough, parking traff long lines,
- 17:01Speaker 3: We've all been there, But when it comes to your cannabis,
- 17:04Speaker 3: Camden Apothecary makes it easy. This is the dispensary for
- 17:09Speaker 3: sports fans, just minutes outside of Philly, with plenty of

- 17:17Speaker 3: about convenience. Camdn Apothecary is all about the guest experience.

- 17:40Speaker 3: They even show love to the community with specials for fans, students,
- 17:45Speaker 3: service members, and healthcare pros. Cam Den Apothecary top quality cannabis,
- 17:51Speaker 3: great prices and an experience made for Philly fans. Twenty
- 17:54Speaker 3: one and up.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Bea Rassoul is brought on board as a defensive assistant.
- 18:00Speaker 1: He was with the Raiders last season as a defensive assistant.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Prior to that, he was a cornerbacks quality control coach
- 18:08Speaker 1: at Florida. He was a cornerbacks coach at Boeing Green
- 18:14Speaker 1: under Scott Leffler. So there's an interesting Eagles connection there.
- 18:17Speaker 1: He seems to be He's a young coach. I think
- 18:19Speaker 1: he's thirty six thirty seven years old, and I would
- 18:23Speaker 1: imagine that his well, his background is with the secondary,
- 18:28Speaker 1: so I imagine that he'll have some sort of an
- 18:32Speaker 1: influence in working with the defensive backs. But he's on
- 18:36Speaker 1: as a defensive assistant. Alan Smith, who I mentioned, came
- 18:40Speaker 1: over as he was a defensive line coach of Army
- 18:43Speaker 1: last season, spent the twenty twenty one season with the
- 18:47Speaker 1: Houston Texans. Well, he's brought on as a defensive assistant.
- 18:53Speaker 1: But there's a notable title change here that Owen by
- 18:57Speaker 1: the way, he's going to mention Joe Casper listed as
- 18:59Speaker 1: defensive pas coordinator. Clint Hurt has an interesting title obviously,
- 19:05Speaker 1: he's the Eagles defensive line coach, but added to his
- 19:09Speaker 1: duties senior defensive assistant slash associate head coach. And for
- 19:16Speaker 1: those wondering, yes, Jamal Singleton is still the assistant head
- 19:21Speaker 1: coach and the.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Eagles running backs coach, of course.
- 19:24Speaker 1: But let's get to Joe Panunzio Assistant Special teams coordinator
- 19:29Speaker 1: slash Director of Team Relationships. We'll see what that all entails,
- 19:34Speaker 1: because that is a fascinating title in addition to what
- 19:37Speaker 1: his previous role was.
- 19:40Speaker 2: And yes, Parks Frasier is the quarterbacks coach.
