- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to on Base, presented by Guyico. Get More Baseball,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Get More with Geico. I'm your host, Mookie Betts, and
- 0:06Speaker 1: today we have a two time All Star and the
- 0:10Speaker 1: Giants Ace and our first Giant on the show, Logan Web.
- 0:14Speaker 1: How you doing, Bro, I'm doing good man. Thanks for
- 0:16Speaker 1: thanks for coming on on the On the show, this
- 0:19Speaker 1: is a different look. Usually it's the batter's box and
- 0:21Speaker 1: then picture's mound. So now I'm glad to actually get
- 0:25Speaker 1: in a comfortable setting with you, Bro.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeh, I'm excited, all right.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So first I want to start with a game that
- 0:31Speaker 1: we play called on base off base. Whether you inter
- 0:34Speaker 1: you're out. And so the first thing is there's nothing
- 0:39Speaker 1: funnier than the fart. Are your on base or off base?
- 0:42Speaker 1: With that? So tell me tell me about these situations
- 0:47Speaker 1: because you were cracking up laughing. I mean there was
- 0:50Speaker 1: a fart there. I guess I'm not sure. Wells, so
- 0:54Speaker 1: what happened? I didn't get to see it?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Uh with Nola, Yeah, I think it was just so
- 0:59Speaker 2: much similar thing he was talking. It's kind of the
- 1:01Speaker 2: way I was. I was just I was doing an interview.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And I won't say the picture's name, but someone near
- 1:09Speaker 2: me is let one loose, and uh, I just had
- 1:13Speaker 2: to laugh. The worst part about it is we lost
- 1:16Speaker 2: to that day. Oh I'm trying to keep it, trying
- 1:20Speaker 2: to keep my cool, but it was It's hilarious. Man,
- 1:23Speaker 2: it's really in the season too.
- 1:25Speaker 1: It wasn't. Yeah, I'll be It is hard because when
- 1:30Speaker 1: you're in the clubhouse and like, you know, you're with
- 1:32Speaker 1: these guys like everything, you know, everything kind of goes.
- 1:35Speaker 1: And so he probably did it on purpose.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I mean he lifted his leg as I'm like his corner.
- 1:42Speaker 2: He lifted his leg and he did it twice too.
- 1:45Speaker 2: The second one was a little louder, so I was like, man,
- 1:47Speaker 2: I gotta laugh, and then all the reporters are laughing.
- 1:50Speaker 1: To So it's funny. When something's funny, it's funny. It
- 1:54Speaker 1: doesn't matter. Okay, So next thing, Jesse Plemming's looks the
- 2:00Speaker 1: most like you in game.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Night, I'll probably say I'm basically.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I don't so maybe I don't know who Jesse Plemming's
- 2:09Speaker 1: no shape. Oh this guy's Jesse Plaming. Yeah, okay, yeah,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I see it. Oh, I remember he was in for
- 2:16Speaker 1: a long time to story, but yeah, that that looks
- 2:19Speaker 1: like the guy from tour Story, the mean guy from
- 2:20Speaker 1: tour Story or something like that. Yeah, okay, so this
- 2:25Speaker 1: is that's your brother, I guess. So.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it usually comes from Dodgers fans when they someone
- 2:31Speaker 2: says something like that, It usually comes from the Dodgers fans.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But have you met him?
- 2:35Speaker 2: I have not. I have not.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Do you like aspire to meet him?
- 2:38Speaker 2: That?
- 2:39Speaker 1: I feel like you should?
- 2:40Speaker 2: I got another one too, uh, Andrew Abbott. I think
- 2:45Speaker 2: there's a similar with there too. Actually took some pictures
- 2:49Speaker 2: at the at the All Star Game. So and you
- 2:50Speaker 2: guys are similar. I think so a little bit.
- 2:53Speaker 1: So if it's so, if you had a movie that
- 2:56Speaker 1: was about you, you would like, by default have to
- 3:00Speaker 1: I think it's gotta be you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 3:02Speaker 1: he's okay, that's fair.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Could play him?
- 3:04Speaker 1: You know. Yeah, there you go. You should ask that
- 3:08Speaker 1: in some type of premiere. Let you do it. Something
- 3:12Speaker 1: to think about guys. Okay, So next thing, Drew Gilbert.
- 3:17Speaker 1: He is the weirdest guy in baseball.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to go on basic the best though.
- 3:24Speaker 2: I mean, he's it's it's kind of it's exactly that's him. Yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 2: I mean it's just that's him all the time. So
- 3:32Speaker 2: he doesn't have like a like a there's no off
- 3:35Speaker 2: switch off. You know this is I'm gonna see him
- 3:38Speaker 2: right go to the field at one o'clock. He's gonna
- 3:40Speaker 2: be just like this.
- 3:42Speaker 1: It's great. I feel like everybody needs a guy like
- 3:45Speaker 1: it's I mean, it's exactly.
- 3:48Speaker 2: It's weird to say, but it's exactly what we kind
- 3:50Speaker 2: of needed. He's just a young young kid that's just
- 3:55Speaker 2: out of his mind all the time, all the time.
- 3:58Speaker 1: So like in regular Cloe, he's just like this, just
- 4:01Speaker 1: like that, so he never I mean, that's good. It's
- 4:03Speaker 1: that he's consistent though, like you can always talk.
- 4:05Speaker 2: To someone never changes, and that's that's one thing we
- 4:08Speaker 2: always sound him psych When you become good and you
- 4:12Speaker 2: know later on your career, don't ever change the same
- 4:15Speaker 2: guy all the time.
- 4:15Speaker 1: That's gonna be a lot though, Like that's a lot.
- 4:18Speaker 1: It's hard to keep up, like a lot to maintain.
- 4:20Speaker 1: But I mean, I guess, like you said, everybody needs it.
- 4:23Speaker 1: He's playing really well. I think this shows that in
- 4:26Speaker 1: his last seven games is hitting five hundred. You guys needed, like,
- 4:30Speaker 1: I guess that's what you said. You guys needed this spark. Yeah,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I mean like this, sometimes it just takes one guy.
- 4:36Speaker 2: It's a young guy, just brings a lot of energy.
- 4:39Speaker 2: He's funny, he's screaming in the dugout all the time.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Yeah, it was.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It's it was a pleasant like surprise.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Something that and like you said, something that you you
- 4:50Speaker 1: guys probably didn't even know you needed it until after yep. Okay,
- 4:54Speaker 1: So next thing, Uh, I'm really curious to hear about
- 4:58Speaker 1: hearing your perspectible this. You'd rather pitch six innings hungover
- 5:03Speaker 1: than to try and pitch six innings with no warm up?
- 5:08Speaker 2: Uh?
- 5:10Speaker 1: So would you rather be hung up, hungover or not
- 5:13Speaker 1: have warm up?
- 5:15Speaker 2: Probably? No warm up? Probably the no warm up hungover?
- 5:19Speaker 2: It would be tough.
- 5:20Speaker 1: But in uh, an All Star game you pitched and
- 5:25Speaker 1: you were hungover.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I did, Yeah, it was. It was my first All
- 5:30Speaker 2: Star game. And I had a couple teammates on the
- 5:34Speaker 2: Giants that had been to All Star games before, and
- 5:35Speaker 2: they were like, enjoy everything, right, go to you know,
- 5:39Speaker 2: go to the parties, do all this, h And I did.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I enjoyed it all. I had fun.
- 5:47Speaker 1: You know.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I had some some guys in there, Uh, some older
- 5:52Speaker 2: guys that were kind of feeding me some drinks, okay,
- 5:55Speaker 2: and I just had a good time. I woke up
- 5:59Speaker 2: the next day I instantly regretted everything that I did
- 6:02Speaker 2: night before, but and I got through it. I know
- 6:06Speaker 2: I didn't pitch that great, but kind of felt like
- 6:08Speaker 2: I made up for it this year, so I was okay.
- 6:11Speaker 1: So like, when you knew did you know you were
- 6:13Speaker 1: going to pitch? Oh? Yeah, so you knew you're gonna pitch.
- 6:16Speaker 2: I know I was going to pitch, but I'm like,
- 6:17Speaker 2: all right, it's one inning. I can get through it.
- 6:21Speaker 2: It wasn't It was not easy Texas. It was hot.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Yeah. Did you almost throw up?
- 6:27Speaker 2: Multiple times?
- 6:27Speaker 1: Really?
- 6:28Speaker 2: I didn't realize that was my first time actually running
- 6:31Speaker 2: from the bullpen.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, because you're always walking in.
- 6:34Speaker 2: To the to the mound. And it was actually Will
- 6:38Speaker 2: who was warming me up. And I think I threw
- 6:41Speaker 2: it fifty five feet. I felt really bad, but I
- 6:44Speaker 2: was out of gas. I'm like, do not throw up.
- 6:46Speaker 2: There's so many people watching right now.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And that'd have been a viral moment though it.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Would have been, but I'm happy I did not do that.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Okay. So staying on the pitching side, talking about that
- 6:59Speaker 1: you you've gotten to you got the two hundred strikeouts
- 7:01Speaker 1: this year for the first time, right, yep, So does
- 7:04Speaker 1: that was that like a is that like a milestone
- 7:07Speaker 1: for you? Or is that just like your whatever?
- 7:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think, uh, I wouldn't say it's
- 7:14Speaker 2: like a milestone. It's definitely something that I always you know,
- 7:17Speaker 2: I I will say, justin justin coming and having Robbie
- 7:22Speaker 2: Ray in the rotation with me too, pretty good strikeout pictures,
- 7:28Speaker 2: just kind of picking their brains about some of the
- 7:31Speaker 2: execution stuff and sequencing and reading swings and doing all
- 7:35Speaker 2: that stuff. I think that was the biggest thing that
- 7:38Speaker 2: helped me a lot this year. And yeah, I mean
- 7:41Speaker 2: it's it's definitely something I wanted to do, but it
- 7:46Speaker 2: wasn't like end all be all.
- 7:48Speaker 1: So having those guys like, is there like a hearing
- 7:56Speaker 1: from them? Have you learned that there's like an art
- 7:58Speaker 1: to striking people out? So what like I guess, like
- 8:01Speaker 1: what what did you learn? Or you know what, I'm
- 8:04Speaker 1: obviously tipping your your hand and whatnot, but like there's
- 8:08Speaker 1: like an art to hitting right and there there's like
- 8:10Speaker 1: a chess game the component to it. Then there's like
- 8:13Speaker 1: a like you said, reading, the reading, the situation that's
- 8:18Speaker 1: going on, and all the type of things. I think
- 8:21Speaker 1: the I think.
- 8:21Speaker 2: The biggest thing is that you kind of learn how
- 8:25Speaker 2: to get to two strikes differently each time. Each time. Yeah,
- 8:30Speaker 2: so it's like, you know, I did this the first
- 8:33Speaker 2: time to get to two strikes, Maybe I'll do this
- 8:35Speaker 2: a different a different way the next time. So it's
- 8:37Speaker 2: just finding ways, you know. I mean, you faced me
- 8:41Speaker 2: a bunch of times. I'm heavy sinker, heavy change up, right,
- 8:44Speaker 2: and I think I kind of used those in early counts.
- 8:47Speaker 2: And then I get to two strikes and it's like,
- 8:49Speaker 2: all right, well what am I going to do to
- 8:51Speaker 2: surprise in this time? Right? And then that's when a
- 8:53Speaker 2: ball would get put in play. Now, it's just finding
- 8:56Speaker 2: different ways to get to two strikes, and then you know,
- 9:02Speaker 2: then it's like then you can kindt throw whatever you want, right,
- 9:05Speaker 2: And it's it's it's kind of just changing the way
- 9:07Speaker 2: that the hitter see it, especially once you throw more
- 9:10Speaker 2: and more in this league. I mean, I'm not gonna
- 9:12Speaker 2: You're not really tricking guys, right, I have I don't know,
- 9:15Speaker 2: fifty at bats against you, right, or Freddy or a
- 9:18Speaker 2: lot of these guys. So it's fun, man, It's that's
- 9:22Speaker 2: what makes it so fun. And I think having Justin
- 9:26Speaker 2: and having Robbie just picking their brain trying to find
- 9:29Speaker 2: how they do it right, and they do it in
- 9:31Speaker 2: different ways than I do right, they have you know,
- 9:33Speaker 2: I wish I could throw a four scene by a
- 9:35Speaker 2: lot of guys, but sometimes it's got to be a
- 9:38Speaker 2: surprise me for scene. So yeah, it's just it's been
- 9:42Speaker 2: a fun Ye're just listening to those guys.
- 9:45Speaker 1: How much does like location play a part in it?
- 9:47Speaker 1: And obviously I know pitch types and you know, like
- 9:50Speaker 1: you're saying earlier, pitch types you know, can help you
- 9:52Speaker 1: get to two strikes, But like how much does location
- 9:56Speaker 1: changing up locations and whatnot play a part in and
- 10:00Speaker 1: you know, getting strikeouts?
- 10:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it kind of goes with the how
- 10:05Speaker 2: do you get to two strikes?
- 10:06Speaker 1: Right?
- 10:07Speaker 2: It's like, you know, the there's so many different ways
- 10:11Speaker 2: that they teach picture now right, just like the lines,
- 10:13Speaker 2: there's a bunch of I think location is a huge thing.
- 10:21Speaker 2: You know, I always tell young guys, I learned this
- 10:23Speaker 2: early on too. Part of the reason why I think,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you know, maybe I didn't get to two strikes two
- 10:28Speaker 2: strikeouts is not being afraid to throw in the zone
- 10:32Speaker 2: to attack guys and you know you got seven guys
- 10:36Speaker 2: behind you, and not being afraid to attack in the
- 10:39Speaker 2: zone and get beat. I mean, it's the big leagues.
- 10:42Speaker 2: You can get beat every once in a while and
- 10:46Speaker 2: being okay with that. And then once you get two strikes,
- 10:47Speaker 2: you kind of play around with it, right, You can
- 10:49Speaker 2: maybe go out of the zone, you can try a
- 10:51Speaker 2: different thing. And but I think location is huge, especially
- 10:56Speaker 2: with two strikes.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You know what's crazy is like seeing guys and sometimes
- 11:02Speaker 1: especially now, like maybe not you, but the guys that
- 11:05Speaker 1: are just up there just checking it, throwing a hundred,
- 11:07Speaker 1: it seems like they'll get you to two strikes and
- 11:09Speaker 1: then they just throw something right down the middle for
- 11:12Speaker 1: a punch out. And it's like sometimes it's almost when
- 11:17Speaker 1: you mess up, Like have you seen like when you
- 11:19Speaker 1: mess up, it still work out? And like how do
- 11:22Speaker 1: you feel about that? Like does that take pressure off
- 11:25Speaker 1: of you when you know, like, well, I know I
- 11:28Speaker 1: need to throw this down in a way, or I
- 11:30Speaker 1: need to throw a chase one, but sometimes I throw
- 11:33Speaker 1: the backup one on accident or whatever. You know what
- 11:35Speaker 1: I'm saying, does that give you confidence, like you're not
- 11:37Speaker 1: really worried about you just kind of throw it. Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I mean, I think at the end of the day,
- 11:42Speaker 2: if you're I mean, there's a lot of numbers that
- 11:45Speaker 2: back this up. But any anytime a hitter doesn't matter
- 11:47Speaker 2: what hitter it is. With two strikes, they're not as
- 11:49Speaker 2: good as a hitter as they are when you guys
- 11:52Speaker 2: are ahead, right, I definitely think some guys get away
- 11:56Speaker 2: with more middle middle stuff than other guys. I don't
- 11:59Speaker 2: think I can get away with the middle middle stuff,
- 12:01Speaker 2: but you know, just not trying to be too perfect
- 12:05Speaker 2: with it, you know. I think I think when you
- 12:07Speaker 2: are trying to be perfect with it, that's when you
- 12:09Speaker 2: kind of miss in the middle. But yeah, I think.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I mean, baseball nowadays, I mean the average fastball is
- 12:18Speaker 2: ninety five miles per hour. I mean, it's crazy, it's crazy.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And I mean you're seeing guys, you know, starter goes
- 12:25Speaker 2: out in the fourth inning and it's a mop up guys,
- 12:28Speaker 2: as they say, and he's throwing one hundred and one.
- 12:30Speaker 2: It's like, where is this guy coming from?
- 12:33Speaker 1: That's the qualifications. So it's but to.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Answer your question, I do think, uh, yeah, you don't
- 12:42Speaker 2: want to miss middle, but I think I think some
- 12:43Speaker 2: guys have the ability to miss middle and get away
- 12:46Speaker 2: with it.
- 12:47Speaker 1: So it's just kind of know who you knowing who
- 12:48Speaker 1: you are for sure. So I want to I want
- 12:50Speaker 1: to switch gears a little bit when it and talk
- 12:52Speaker 1: a little about a little bit about like load management
- 12:56Speaker 1: obviously for position player that plays every day. For me,
- 13:01Speaker 1: like what, I love to go play one hundred and
- 13:04Speaker 1: sixty two games. Yeah, but like that's probably not going
- 13:10Speaker 1: to be the most optimal thing just because like you
- 13:15Speaker 1: do your you do need recovery, Like you really do
- 13:18Speaker 1: need recovery in order to continue to play the best
- 13:22Speaker 1: that you can. Sure. And so from a pictures perspective,
- 13:25Speaker 1: right if you're I want to hear, like if you're
- 13:28Speaker 1: constantly going out throwing one hundred pitches, how does that?
- 13:34Speaker 1: How would that affect you? Or like you know some
- 13:36Speaker 1: cause I've seen like from from our perspective, like sometimes
- 13:39Speaker 1: cursh I'll just use curse friends for instance, Like he'll
- 13:41Speaker 1: go out and he'll throw eighty pitches, get through six
- 13:43Speaker 1: or whatever, but then he'll go out and throw a
- 13:45Speaker 1: hundred pitches, And I feel like the times that he
- 13:49Speaker 1: throws the eighty and helps him the next start, but
- 13:53Speaker 1: it may hurt him. I don't I don't know how
- 13:54Speaker 1: that really kind of works, Like do you do you
- 13:56Speaker 1: need to get get used to throwing a hundred pitches
- 14:00Speaker 1: stuff all the time, Like how does that work for you?
- 14:02Speaker 2: Yeah? Man, it's there's so many questions about I feel
- 14:07Speaker 2: like that nowadays. I I just I feel like I
- 14:12Speaker 2: came up when you know, the rotation when I first
- 14:15Speaker 2: came up was was Bumgarner, Johnny Quato, Jeff Samarga. I
- 14:19Speaker 2: mean there was guys that threw two hundred names every
- 14:21Speaker 2: single year, and I had Boach as my manager, and
- 14:26Speaker 2: it didn't matter if I went three or seven. I
- 14:29Speaker 2: was thrown one hundred pitches that day. And that's just
- 14:33Speaker 2: kind of the way I've always thought about it. But
- 14:37Speaker 2: now I think to go back to the you know,
- 14:41Speaker 2: the middle relief guys are throwing one hundred. Now you
- 14:45Speaker 2: kind of want to use those guys. So I think
- 14:46Speaker 2: that's part of it too, now, where it's like if
- 14:49Speaker 2: you get a guy who gives you five or six
- 14:51Speaker 2: and he's at eighty pitches and you got three studs
- 14:54Speaker 2: coming up into that are all available to pitch that night.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I think that's I think that's smart. I think there's
- 15:03Speaker 2: I think there's there's a lot of stuff that goes
- 15:04Speaker 2: into it, right if you know, say that through eighty pitches,
- 15:09Speaker 2: but the fifth and sixth it's kind of like a
- 15:11Speaker 2: second and third one out and if I find ways
- 15:13Speaker 2: to get out of it and kind of going through it,
- 15:17Speaker 2: I personally I always want to throw a hundred pitches.
- 15:22Speaker 2: I think, you know, I'm lucky enough. I pitch with
- 15:25Speaker 2: some guys that that always want to throw a hundred pitches.
- 15:27Speaker 2: But I think it's just kind of the way baseball
- 15:30Speaker 2: is going nowadays. I I don't know, I don't have
- 15:32Speaker 2: an answer for it. I do think the relievers being
- 15:36Speaker 2: so nasty nowadays has has something to.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Do with it.
- 15:41Speaker 2: But I'm I think it's just the game has changed.
- 15:44Speaker 1: A little bit. So it's almost like selfish is the
- 15:47Speaker 1: wrong term. But like for me to go out and
- 15:51Speaker 1: throw a hundred pitches and if I'm cruising cool, but
- 15:55Speaker 1: like for me to go out and with eighty with
- 15:58Speaker 1: eighty three pitches, to go out into the seventh or
- 16:01Speaker 1: sixth or whatever and I kind of got through it
- 16:04Speaker 1: a little bit, it would be more optimal for the
- 16:07Speaker 1: team to bring in this guy throw on a hundred probably,
- 16:12Speaker 1: you know, that's almost like a team thing, like we
- 16:14Speaker 1: use more of the the team versus like having to
- 16:17Speaker 1: like lean on the starters. And then I mean, like
- 16:20Speaker 1: you said, I mean you get you know, obviously the
- 16:23Speaker 1: back end of the bullpen is gonna be the back
- 16:24Speaker 1: end of the bullpen, but now like the beginning of
- 16:27Speaker 1: the bullpen is like just as good as the back
- 16:29Speaker 1: end of the bullpen. So it's like, you really should
- 16:32Speaker 1: you want to use this Yeah? Yeah, you really should
- 16:33Speaker 1: use the whole team for sure in order to ensure
- 16:36Speaker 1: these wins. It's like, for instance, for you, like once
- 16:38Speaker 1: you get through five and or whatever, and let's say
- 16:43Speaker 1: it was you know, you had to get out of
- 16:44Speaker 1: a jam to get through the fifth or something like,
- 16:47Speaker 1: do you feel like, no, I need to go back
- 16:49Speaker 1: out there to ensure this win or are you like,
- 16:52Speaker 1: I'm I'm cool with if this guy coming out and
- 16:57Speaker 1: I'm not. I don't mean that in like a weak
- 16:59Speaker 1: negative way, right, not a mental way, but like would
- 17:03Speaker 1: you be are you cool with.
- 17:04Speaker 2: That me personally? And yeah, no, I'm not cool with it.
- 17:09Speaker 2: I want to go back out there. But I think
- 17:12Speaker 2: as I've gotten older, I've noticed these things. I realized
- 17:16Speaker 2: these things and the bullpen guys are nasty. So I'm
- 17:19Speaker 2: not as frustrated per se, if if if Bomo wants
- 17:23Speaker 2: to take me out or but I think it's a
- 17:28Speaker 2: I think it's a mentality thing. I think there's you know,
- 17:31Speaker 2: it's we get paid to throw a hundred pitches and
- 17:34Speaker 2: that's that's that's our job. So I want to go
- 17:38Speaker 2: out there and I want to give as many as
- 17:40Speaker 2: many pitches, as many innings as I can. You know,
- 17:44Speaker 2: even you know, one of the biggest things, especially when
- 17:47Speaker 2: I was younger, was you know, you give up four
- 17:50Speaker 2: in the first it happens, sometimes give up four in
- 17:52Speaker 2: the first, find a way to get through five that day, right,
- 17:55Speaker 2: you throw thirty, find a way to get through five,
- 17:57Speaker 2: and you get through six like you did a great job.
- 18:00Speaker 2: And I and once you start doing that, you kind
- 18:03Speaker 2: of start seeing like the position players like they love that,
- 18:07Speaker 2: right or the bullpen guys they respect that more there,
- 18:10Speaker 2: And that's that's kind of what I always tell I
- 18:13Speaker 2: try to tell the younger pictures. You know, we've had
- 18:15Speaker 2: a lot of them the last couple of years. Just
- 18:16Speaker 2: like even when you're struggling a little bit, especially early
- 18:19Speaker 2: in the game, find a way to get through it.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Find a way to try to throw a hundred pitches
- 18:24Speaker 2: that day, try to find a way to get your team.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Just so explain that to me though, because I hear
- 18:30Speaker 1: what you're saying. But if somebody goes and gives up
- 18:35Speaker 1: four in the first and they threw thirty three pitches
- 18:39Speaker 1: or whatever, like, what does it mean to find a way?
- 18:43Speaker 1: Like how do you real it in Is it a
- 18:45Speaker 1: mental thing or is it a physical adjustment? Yeah? I
- 18:48Speaker 1: mean what is it?
- 18:49Speaker 2: I think if you go out there in the second
- 18:50Speaker 2: inning and you give up two more base hits and
- 18:52Speaker 2: it's like then you're probably gonna get taken out of
- 18:54Speaker 2: that game for sure. But sometimes it just could be
- 18:58Speaker 2: like a weird thing where you were off that inning
- 19:01Speaker 2: or but that's I mean, if you're in the big
- 19:05Speaker 2: leagues as a picture, you know how to get out right,
- 19:08Speaker 2: and that's kind of to find the way thing. It's like,
- 19:11Speaker 2: all right, put yourself in a hole here, just kind
- 19:14Speaker 2: of kind of bear down and try to get through it.
- 19:16Speaker 2: And sometimes you don't get through it and that happens, right,
- 19:20Speaker 2: and uh, but if you do. And I mean Lozardo
- 19:25Speaker 2: pitched yesterday, right, and.
- 19:26Speaker 1: He went through you got through seven.
- 19:27Speaker 2: I think he gave up four in the first. That's
- 19:32Speaker 2: even more than finding a way.
- 19:33Speaker 1: That's that.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I think that's cool. Right, they end up doing like
- 19:37Speaker 2: ninety five pitches.
- 19:37Speaker 1: It's just.
- 19:40Speaker 2: That's kind of to find the way thing, right, It's
- 19:42Speaker 2: like it's it's still in there. You still have your
- 19:45Speaker 2: game plan that you wanted to do. Maybe you didn't
- 19:47Speaker 2: execute it that first inning, but you still are confident
- 19:50Speaker 2: in what you want to do. You're confident in how
- 19:53Speaker 2: you want to get this guy out. And you go
- 19:55Speaker 2: out there and you try to do it again, and
- 19:56Speaker 2: then the second thing happens. You go one, two, three,
- 19:58Speaker 2: and then you go it just keep going. And that's
- 20:02Speaker 2: kind of that message of like you got to figure
- 20:04Speaker 2: it out.
- 20:05Speaker 1: So how do you how do you manage going in
- 20:09Speaker 1: and giving up three in the first But you gave
- 20:12Speaker 1: up a bloop on a slider that was off the
- 20:14Speaker 1: plate away, then you ace to sinker in and he
- 20:20Speaker 1: pulled a double down the line. Then you made it.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You did make a mistake, you know, like how do
- 20:25Speaker 1: you how do you manage those emotions? As far as
- 20:29Speaker 1: like you are making pitches, but they're just getting hits.
- 20:33Speaker 2: You kind of just gotta say, you gotta tip your cap.
- 20:35Speaker 2: I mean, it's the big leagues that happens, right, you
- 20:39Speaker 2: can make I could throw fifteen pitches that day down
- 20:42Speaker 2: the middle and it get hits, It gets hit right
- 20:44Speaker 2: at somebody, and you know, I didn't really have a
- 20:46Speaker 2: great day, but it went my way. And then there's
- 20:49Speaker 2: days when you you don't miss the spot, but guys
- 20:51Speaker 2: are you know, there's broken bat hits and you tip
- 20:54Speaker 2: your cap and kind of just gotta say f it.
- 20:57Speaker 1: And so you try not to get from straight away.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't get frustrated because I think when you
- 21:02Speaker 2: get frustrated, it just compiles. And I'll be the first.
- 21:05Speaker 2: I mean it happens to me all the time. You know,
- 21:07Speaker 2: I get frustrated by a blue pit or something and
- 21:11Speaker 2: all of a sudden, I give up, you know, I
- 21:13Speaker 2: walk a guy and then I give up a run.
- 21:14Speaker 2: It's like, why did I let that blue pit mess
- 21:17Speaker 2: with what I was doing?
- 21:18Speaker 1: Right?
- 21:19Speaker 2: I still have the good game plan, I still have
- 21:22Speaker 2: the confidence in what I can do. Why did I
- 21:24Speaker 2: let a little blue pit mess my day up?
- 21:27Speaker 1: So? How do you not let the blue pit mess
- 21:28Speaker 1: your day, Like is it like do you just breathe
- 21:30Speaker 1: or do you just like.
- 21:31Speaker 2: It takes time for sure. Yeah, it's I think some
- 21:37Speaker 2: guys have it right away. I think some guys they
- 21:40Speaker 2: they learn to deal with it. I'm still trying to
- 21:43Speaker 2: get better at it. I still get frustrated by some things,
- 21:46Speaker 2: but you know, you gotta, like I said, at the
- 21:50Speaker 2: end of the day, it's the big leagues. It happens.
- 21:52Speaker 2: You know, these guys are you guys are really good
- 21:53Speaker 2: at hitting, and you kind of just gotta you gotta
- 21:59Speaker 2: let it go somehow let it go. You don't want
- 22:01Speaker 2: to let it go. Yeah, but there's you gotta find ways.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Thinking. On the other side, it's like as hitters, it's like,
- 22:10Speaker 1: there's no way we believe that you're gonna go up
- 22:14Speaker 1: and throw three perfect pitches on that edge, Like the
- 22:17Speaker 1: chances of that happening are slim to none, right, and
- 22:22Speaker 1: then when you go do it, it's so frustrating. But
- 22:26Speaker 1: we also got to remember, like you're a professional as well,
- 22:30Speaker 1: you know. So it's it's really just that constant battle
- 22:33Speaker 1: of accepting that where this is the big leagues and
- 22:38Speaker 1: I'm playing against a professional, but also understanding, like you
- 22:44Speaker 1: gotta stick with your game plan, you gotta you gotta
- 22:47Speaker 1: control what you can control. And there's like that constant
- 22:50Speaker 1: it's it's really hard. It's it's a it's a balance
- 22:52Speaker 1: that's that's really hard. Like accepting accepting failure is like.
- 22:55Speaker 2: The hardest thing hard and it's and this game is
- 22:58Speaker 2: hard to play. One hundred and sixty two games is
- 23:01Speaker 2: hopefully more sometimes right, and go through stretches. You know,
- 23:04Speaker 2: I like watching baseball. I watched you know, I watch
- 23:07Speaker 2: one hundred and whatever thirty of the games, right, so,
- 23:13Speaker 2: but it seems like I like watching hitters, and you know,
- 23:16Speaker 2: when a guy's in a slump, it seems like it's
- 23:18Speaker 2: always oh too right, And it's like there's always and
- 23:21Speaker 2: it's the same with pictures, right, there's there's times when
- 23:23Speaker 2: it's just not going your way. Right where you talk
- 23:26Speaker 2: about three pitches, right, Well, I'll throw two perfect pitches
- 23:29Speaker 2: and then I get oh two, and then I throw
- 23:31Speaker 2: the one bad pitch and they hit it and they
- 23:33Speaker 2: get a hit. And it's like sometimes it's just the
- 23:35Speaker 2: way the game goes and you can't control it, right,
- 23:40Speaker 2: It's that's like the control of the controllables, right, it's
- 23:44Speaker 2: and you gotta handle your emotions. And I think that's
- 23:49Speaker 2: when when you can do that, that's when you can
- 23:51Speaker 2: pretty you can stay more consistent in this game.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah for sure. Okay, So everybody in the league has
- 23:57Speaker 1: a guy, right, has a guy. And I know there
- 24:07Speaker 1: is like this I own you type thing, but I
- 24:11Speaker 1: don't think it's true because every time, like every time
- 24:14Speaker 1: I know that we're facing you, I hate it. I'm like,
- 24:16Speaker 1: oh my gosh, Now I don't know how I've gotten
- 24:22Speaker 1: how I've had the success I have had, because it
- 24:27Speaker 1: seems like you go seven innings no runs every time
- 24:32Speaker 1: every single time we play, but you give up like
- 24:35Speaker 1: three hits and I got like two of them, you know,
- 24:37Speaker 1: But I don't understand it. But like realistically speaking, like
- 24:42Speaker 1: it could be me, but like who's like the guy
- 24:44Speaker 1: that it doesn't matter what you throw, where we are
- 24:48Speaker 1: or where you are, like they're going to get hit.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I think there's there's a couple guys. I think it
- 24:56Speaker 2: It just happens sometimes you just.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't I don't know.
- 25:02Speaker 2: That was the So I think that one was like
- 25:04Speaker 2: the first time I had thrown a change up below
- 25:07Speaker 2: the zone and giving up a home run, and I say,
- 25:10Speaker 2: of course it's you, right.
- 25:12Speaker 1: And uh yeah, it's just.
- 25:15Speaker 2: You know, Willy's like that for me. Obviously thankfully he's
- 25:19Speaker 2: on my team now, But Willie, it was kind of
- 25:23Speaker 2: the very similar where it's, you know, you make good
- 25:26Speaker 2: pitches and then all of a sudden you throw the
- 25:28Speaker 2: one pitch.
- 25:28Speaker 1: That you don't want to throw.
- 25:29Speaker 2: The there there are definitely some guys, uh some rockies,
- 25:36Speaker 2: guys Chrolie Blackman chuck on me.
- 25:39Speaker 1: It didn't, it didn't, did not matter.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Every time I got him out, I looked at the
- 25:42Speaker 2: dugout and I had you were definitely one of them.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Freddy's one of them. I mean, there's it's a lot
- 25:51Speaker 2: of dob.
- 25:52Speaker 1: When you feel like that, like so I use it
- 25:56Speaker 1: for me. I remember mark O Gonzales, I mean, I
- 25:59Speaker 1: know you remark Gonzales like that is a dude. He
- 26:02Speaker 1: threw what eighty eight to ninety ninety two maybe on
- 26:06Speaker 1: a good day, and like every time he bobbed, I
- 26:10Speaker 1: weaved and every time like it was unbelievable that I
- 26:16Speaker 1: cannot get a hit off this dude throwing eighty nine
- 26:18Speaker 1: miles an hour.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's I mean, that's the key I think
- 26:21Speaker 2: is like finding new ways to to get guys out right.
- 26:26Speaker 2: It's you know, I feel like I've thrown different pitches recently,
- 26:31Speaker 2: right for sure, for sure, there's always.
- 26:33Speaker 1: This change it that changes. Like for me, when you
- 26:36Speaker 1: started throwing the cutter, it's like, dang, that's a completely
- 26:39Speaker 1: new now, like that just opens up five new ways
- 26:44Speaker 1: to for sequences for you. You know what I'm saying,
- 26:47Speaker 1: And so that's what you're that's what you're saying for sure.
- 26:50Speaker 2: I mean there's like I said, you you face a
- 26:54Speaker 2: lot of guys, a lot of the guys that I
- 26:56Speaker 2: feel like I have troubles with her, Like guys in
- 26:59Speaker 2: the NLS faced a bunch of times, you know, Manny
- 27:01Speaker 2: Machado is one of those guys. Uh Luisa ries Now,
- 27:05Speaker 2: I mean there's a there's a there's a ton of
- 27:08Speaker 2: guys where you're just like, man, I've all right, I've
- 27:10Speaker 2: tried this five times. These five times haven't worked, you know, right,
- 27:13Speaker 2: and you feel like you set it up perfectly and
- 27:16Speaker 2: you throw the pitch that you want and you know,
- 27:18Speaker 2: at the end of the day you want to you
- 27:20Speaker 2: never really want to throw away from your shrinks, but
- 27:24Speaker 2: sometimes your shrinks just don't match up well with this guy.
- 27:28Speaker 2: So it's like it's it's being okay with being uncomfortable,
- 27:33Speaker 2: Like I don't really throw this pitch very often. I'm
- 27:35Speaker 2: not very comfortable throwing this pitch, but it hasn't worked
- 27:39Speaker 2: with the other pitches. So let's let's try something new.
- 27:41Speaker 2: And you end up throwing something new and it works
- 27:45Speaker 2: and you then it's like, all right, now it's your
- 27:48Speaker 2: turn to to make to make the adjustment, right. So
- 27:51Speaker 2: it's just that cat and mouse skin. That's what That's
- 27:56Speaker 2: why I think baseball so fun, especially especially once you
- 27:59Speaker 2: start facing guys more and more, Like I'm gonna end
- 28:02Speaker 2: up facing you guys four years four times this year,
- 28:05Speaker 2: and it feels like it happens every year. I mean,
- 28:07Speaker 2: it's just you gotta find new ways. And that's that's
- 28:13Speaker 2: kind of That's something that Justin and Robbie have helped
- 28:15Speaker 2: me with too, right, Like talk to those guys. These
- 28:17Speaker 2: guys both have ten plus. I think Justin is a
- 28:21Speaker 2: day away from twenty years. Right.
- 28:22Speaker 1: It's like.
- 28:25Speaker 2: You're Justin can't hide what he's gonna throw to you, right,
- 28:28Speaker 2: I mean you face them a ton everyone has faced
- 28:30Speaker 2: them a lot, and uh, just finding new ways.
- 28:34Speaker 1: So I want to do I do want to, like
- 28:36Speaker 1: you said, find a new ways. Like I know you're
- 28:39Speaker 1: you're throwing this cutter now and whatever else, Like when
- 28:42Speaker 1: you go into it's not about the cutter. It's more
- 28:44Speaker 1: about like adding a new pitch, right, and maybe you
- 28:47Speaker 1: had the pitch before, but really like locking in on
- 28:49Speaker 1: throwing this new pitch. Like what is it when you're
- 28:53Speaker 1: going in to add a new pitch. I'm assuming it's
- 28:56Speaker 1: because you want to add new sequences and like add
- 28:59Speaker 1: a different look, right, And but when you go in
- 29:03Speaker 1: to add a new pitch and then you take it
- 29:04Speaker 1: into the game. So for me, like if I made
- 29:08Speaker 1: a swing adjustment and I'm practice it all day and
- 29:12Speaker 1: then I go into the game, Like there's still a
- 29:15Speaker 1: little hesitancy when it comes to this this new swing
- 29:20Speaker 1: adjustment and whatnot, and like the unknown, right, you don't
- 29:23Speaker 1: know if it's gonna work. You're kind of scared if
- 29:25Speaker 1: it does work or not. If it doesn't work, then
- 29:28Speaker 1: I'm back to where I was. And you know, so
- 29:30Speaker 1: like when it goes to adding a new pitch, like
- 29:33Speaker 1: what's your thought process? And like how do you get
- 29:35Speaker 1: through that.
- 29:36Speaker 2: I think it ends up being a confidence thing, right.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I think if I throw it once and it works,
- 29:41Speaker 2: I think it's like, Okay, maybe I can't throw this.
- 29:44Speaker 2: You know, I tried to throw It's not the first
- 29:47Speaker 2: time I try to throw cutter. I tried to throw
- 29:49Speaker 2: cutter for probably five years now and I ended up
- 29:55Speaker 2: twenty twenty two or twenty three. I tried it out
- 29:59Speaker 2: in a spring game and Rowdy Till has hit it
- 30:01Speaker 2: like four eighty. And I know Rowdy He's from you know, Sacramento.
- 30:07Speaker 2: I've known him for a while now, and he's in
- 30:09Speaker 2: the after the game, you know, spring training. So I'm
- 30:12Speaker 2: in the dugout and he's on deck circle. He was like,
- 30:14Speaker 2: what are you like while he throwing that pitch, and
- 30:17Speaker 2: I was like, I don't know. I was like, And
- 30:18Speaker 2: I didn't throw it again for two years until I
- 30:21Speaker 2: face you guys last year, right for all sur Break,
- 30:24Speaker 2: and I was just I, you know, I I was
- 30:27Speaker 2: messing around with it and catch play. I think I
- 30:29Speaker 2: threw like a little flat ground and got on the
- 30:31Speaker 2: mount and threw a couple and they actually cut and
- 30:34Speaker 2: I was like, you know what, I'm gonna try this out.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It might as well, like nothing to lose here. And
- 30:40Speaker 2: the first time I threw was the show. Hey, right,
- 30:41Speaker 2: it's like if you're gonna if it's gonna work, it's
- 30:44Speaker 2: it's yeah, And you know he throw it enough times
- 30:49Speaker 2: he ends up hitting in the water like you did
- 30:50Speaker 2: last time I threw him one. But but it just
- 30:53Speaker 2: you know, it's I think it takes and it could
- 30:55Speaker 2: be the same. I don't know. I'm not a hitter,
- 30:57Speaker 2: but it could be the same with one swing right
- 30:59Speaker 2: where it's like you work on the swing adjustment all
- 31:01Speaker 2: day and the first swing you take, you hit a
- 31:03Speaker 2: double and it's say, there it is, right, and then
- 31:06Speaker 2: it's like that's the feel. And I think it's the
- 31:08Speaker 2: same with a new pitch grip or pitch typeer you know,
- 31:12Speaker 2: I think, you know, pitchers are kind of nuts with
- 31:15Speaker 2: the same with hit or I think baseball in general
- 31:18Speaker 2: always trying to tinker with stuff and change things, and uh,
- 31:22Speaker 2: it just takes one time to really feel it and
- 31:24Speaker 2: you're like, man, that's that was the feel.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Yeah, and then you have to like once you do
- 31:30Speaker 1: it once and let's say you are successful, once you
- 31:33Speaker 1: have to with the new swing queue, like you have
- 31:37Speaker 1: to go through and understand, like you're not going to
- 31:40Speaker 1: get a hit every time with this, you know, like
- 31:43Speaker 1: it's not fool proof. You don't got it now, you know.
- 31:46Speaker 1: It's like it's always a work in progress and you're
- 31:48Speaker 1: always trying to refine it, refine it, and you have
- 31:52Speaker 1: to remember like sometimes actually a lot of times, like
- 31:56Speaker 1: they're not going to throw stuff right down the middle
- 31:58Speaker 1: for you to hit, like, you know, so even the
- 32:00Speaker 1: swing queue, most of the swings we take are like
- 32:04Speaker 1: some type of off balance or some type of you know,
- 32:07Speaker 1: somewhere up and away or not down the middle. And
- 32:10Speaker 1: so like I'm assuming for you, like you're not gonna
- 32:15Speaker 1: always have the same release point or it's not it's
- 32:17Speaker 1: gonna be o too where you have to really get
- 32:19Speaker 1: it away. You can't just throw it down the middle
- 32:21Speaker 1: like you always. You know what I'm saying. So there's
- 32:22Speaker 1: always some type of variable that we have to to
- 32:26Speaker 1: understand when implementing something new.
- 32:29Speaker 2: For sure, Yeah, I think ends up going back to
- 32:33Speaker 2: like the game plan stuff. Right, It's like, all right,
- 32:35Speaker 2: I'm confident in this pitch might not be my best pitch,
- 32:38Speaker 2: or you have a game plan where you're waiting for
- 32:42Speaker 2: a pitch all day and you might not get that
- 32:43Speaker 2: pitch and so you're force at bat, but you're ready
- 32:46Speaker 2: for it when it comes right. And it's I think
- 32:49Speaker 2: it's that's what makes this game so so so fun
- 32:53Speaker 2: and so frustrated at the same time.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Okay, so now it's trying to bring relief and get
- 32:57Speaker 1: more baseball, get more with the Geico. There's some crazy
- 33:00Speaker 1: moments that were caught on camera, uh that I want
- 33:04Speaker 1: to show Ferris Bueller. Looks like he was taking taking
- 33:09Speaker 1: another baseball game at Oracle.
- 33:12Speaker 2: I did see it, so I don't.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I'm not fully familiar with Ferris Bueller.
- 33:18Speaker 2: I'm either not either.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Okay, So I know Walker Vieler. His handle on Instagram
- 33:24Speaker 1: and stuff was Bueller's day Off. I'm assuming this that
- 33:28Speaker 1: has something to do with this this guy.
- 33:30Speaker 2: Yes, okay, so I think this is similar to he
- 33:34Speaker 2: wore that in the in the in the movie.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Okay, so what do you know what what was the
- 33:39Speaker 1: what was the movie?
- 33:40Speaker 2: Ferris Bueller's day Off, That's what it was.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Okay, got it? So that's him? So he uh, I'm
- 33:46Speaker 1: that's he's on the left right, Yeah, ok yeah, it
- 33:49Speaker 1: seems like a good guy. All right, So what about this.
- 33:54Speaker 1: This this Pirates fan has a has a face with
- 34:00Speaker 1: the thousand Paul schemes has a he has a shirt
- 34:05Speaker 1: maybe yep, a shirt okay, yeah that uh that with
- 34:10Speaker 1: the headband on, with the head band on that uh golly,
- 34:14Speaker 1: nobody here and not sitting next to anybody though, But
- 34:18Speaker 1: I guess it is. What it is is that in Pittsburgh.
- 34:20Speaker 1: I mean I didn't want to say it, but I
- 34:23Speaker 1: would assume so. So it must not be a day
- 34:28Speaker 1: he was pishing that maybe I don't know, yeah, because
- 34:32Speaker 1: people usually go when he's pitching. I do want to
- 34:35Speaker 1: switch gears real quick. So let's talk a little bit
- 34:36Speaker 1: about you. Uh you play quarterback in high school. You're
- 34:41Speaker 1: from here, yeah, and uh you play football and baseball
- 34:44Speaker 1: growing up?
- 34:45Speaker 2: I did ye basketball until I was till middle school.
- 34:50Speaker 2: I was the kid that they let play like the
- 34:52Speaker 2: last minute of the half.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Oh okay, so you got the mop up minutes. Okay.
- 34:56Speaker 2: It wasn't very good at basketball.
- 34:57Speaker 1: They weren't very s all right. So I mean I'm
- 35:00Speaker 1: just gonna go with the obvious. Uh, white kid, you
- 35:05Speaker 1: probably could shoot it a little bit. That was yeah
- 35:07Speaker 1: that in defense? Okay, all right, that's what they asked
- 35:11Speaker 1: me to do. Okay, so you, like I said, you
- 35:14Speaker 1: played football like I'm assuming you were. This is you
- 35:17Speaker 1: running right here? Yes, it's not very very fast like
- 35:19Speaker 1: lamar out there. What do you mean so you you
- 35:24Speaker 1: love football? Obviously? I love football. Yeah it was.
- 35:27Speaker 2: That's always been my favorite sport. Okay, okay, And I
- 35:30Speaker 2: think about junior senior high school, I was I realized
- 35:33Speaker 2: I was a little better at baseball.
- 35:34Speaker 1: So okay, so did you stop playing No?
- 35:36Speaker 2: I played all the way through senior year.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Did you get any college recruit.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Yeah, there's some smaller schools, and it wasn't nothing crazy
- 35:44Speaker 2: the baseball offers for a little bit. Yeah, it was
- 35:46Speaker 2: a little bit better. So I think it was like
- 35:49Speaker 2: a week after my senior year ended, I signed at
- 35:52Speaker 2: Cal Paul and you go.
- 35:53Speaker 1: Play Oh nice? Okay, So yeah, I played playing basketball
- 35:57Speaker 1: all the way through and I didn't even think everything.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Yeah I play every big yet. So but I know
- 36:03Speaker 1: I have a note here it says you used to
- 36:05Speaker 1: you you were the potst in in uh in football practice?
- 36:09Speaker 1: Where was that is that? According to some of your teammates.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Yeah, so we had a couple of defensive coaches too.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Of my favorite coaches name with Jason Adams and Bob Seabring,
- 36:22Speaker 2: and they would always encourage the defensive guys to kind
- 36:28Speaker 2: of mess with our like receivers or mess with the guys,
- 36:31Speaker 2: and I felt like I was the one who had
- 36:34Speaker 2: to kind of stick up for them.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Okay, okay, so.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Like obviously I'm wearing the red jersey right or nobody
- 36:41Speaker 2: can touch me. It's kind of like the Mahomes. You
- 36:44Speaker 2: see Mahomes when he was going out of bounds and
- 36:46Speaker 2: he kind of checked the guy. It's kind of like that.
- 36:49Speaker 2: It's kind of like the you know, I'm gonna stick
- 36:52Speaker 2: up for my the offensive guys, and I only played
- 36:55Speaker 2: offense and these are even in high school. Man, it
- 36:58Speaker 2: was weird when when I think about it now, it
- 37:00Speaker 2: was like all the defensive guys only play defense. Offensive
- 37:03Speaker 2: guys don't play offense. So I just thought I had
- 37:06Speaker 2: to kind of stick up from I give him little
- 37:08Speaker 2: shoulder check.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Here, Okay, you gotta do it.
- 37:09Speaker 2: You got to do a little smack talk here and there.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Okay, So do you play fantasy? I do? So you're
- 37:15Speaker 1: do you like and you actually do it? Or you're
- 37:18Speaker 1: just kind of no, I do it.
- 37:19Speaker 2: I probably a little too much, but too much?
- 37:22Speaker 1: Okay, So every Thursday and Sunday you're pretty much watching football.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I am, okay, and you like so you football is
- 37:30Speaker 1: probably still your first love. Yeah it is, Well, so you,
- 37:33Speaker 1: why don't you play like flag or something? Get out
- 37:35Speaker 1: there and play some flag man.
- 37:37Speaker 2: I don't is that allowed to be allowed to do that?
- 37:39Speaker 1: I don't know. One way to find out.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Maybe later on, Maybe later on, after I'm done playing.
- 37:45Speaker 2: I joined a flag league.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Who is your number one pick this year?
- 37:49Speaker 2: I mean I got too many leagues, okay, so I'll
- 37:52Speaker 2: do the Giants.
- 37:53Speaker 1: The Giants, I was the twelfth pick.
- 37:55Speaker 2: I picked Nico Collins and then obviously with the Raiders
- 37:58Speaker 2: head I went Brock Bowers.
- 37:59Speaker 1: With an Okay, okay, So I don't know anything about
- 38:04Speaker 1: fantasy I mean I got it. I'm on, I'm a
- 38:06Speaker 1: part of the team.
- 38:07Speaker 2: But you don't run it. No, I just run it
- 38:10Speaker 2: for you.
- 38:10Speaker 1: My cousin, My cousin, he comes in for the draft.
- 38:13Speaker 1: He's been doing it for me since twenty eighteen. So
- 38:19Speaker 1: he flies in even he'll fly in do the draft.
- 38:23Speaker 1: I've only I've picked one person in my whole fantasy
- 38:27Speaker 1: football career, and it was Lamar Jackson the first year
- 38:30Speaker 1: that he went off, and I'll say, you know what,
- 38:33Speaker 1: and since then, I haven't. He hasn't really allowed me
- 38:35Speaker 1: to pick anybody else, which is cool.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Like I wouldn't give you the kicker defense.
- 38:40Speaker 1: No, like this year. This year, I remember during the
- 38:44Speaker 1: draft he would say like two or three different people
- 38:50Speaker 1: that we could choose from special receivers. And I would say,
- 38:53Speaker 1: I like, I like this guy. He's like, ah no,
- 38:56Speaker 1: we're not gonna do that, and so go again. So
- 38:59Speaker 1: I just slowly but surely said, you know what, I'm
- 39:02Speaker 1: just going to be the the owner and I will
- 39:05Speaker 1: I'll pay for the gym. Yeah, he's the GM. He runs.
- 39:08Speaker 1: How many leagues are you in?
- 39:11Speaker 2: I kind of don't want to say it. I'm in
- 39:12Speaker 2: eight leagues. Eight le yes, but uh.
- 39:16Speaker 1: How do you keep up with eight?
- 39:17Speaker 2: Four of them are uh like dynasty keeper leagues okay, okay,
- 39:23Speaker 2: so you don't have to read draft. Yeah, and then
- 39:27Speaker 2: the four of them is like the team. And then
- 39:29Speaker 2: I got like one with my dad, one with the others,
- 39:31Speaker 2: so so like too serious. There's like a couple of
- 39:34Speaker 2: super serious ones, and then the rest are just kind of.
- 39:37Speaker 1: Out of these eight leagues, like, how many do you
- 39:40Speaker 1: are you winning? Like a couple of them or I
- 39:42Speaker 1: think it was four and four a week week one.
- 39:45Speaker 1: They know I'm talking about. Are you winning the Oh?
- 39:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I've won a couple of weeks. I've been he
- 39:50Speaker 2: got eight chances, bro, I know the Giants one is
- 39:53Speaker 2: the one I want to win the most. Uh, and
- 39:57Speaker 2: I have not coming second twice, I believe.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Okay, So and do you guys do you guys have
- 40:03Speaker 1: like if somebody comes in last, they have to do something.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Yeah, we've usually done the bat Boy in spring training? Okay, Okay,
- 40:10Speaker 2: Kurt Casally, Actually I knew what a beautiful human being
- 40:15Speaker 2: he was. He lost last year and he has not
- 40:17Speaker 2: come to bat Boy, so we're kind of waiting.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Let's find him out of Nasville. Make sure you go. Okay, So, uh,
- 40:25Speaker 1: you guys are in a playoff push. Now you're getting close.
- 40:29Speaker 1: You went through a little struggle, but now you got
- 40:31Speaker 1: Drew Gilbert. Drew Gilbert, he's he's the savior. So now
- 40:38Speaker 1: what do you feel like you guys really need to
- 40:40Speaker 1: do to uh too through this push?
- 40:44Speaker 2: And I say, yeah, I think kind of like I
- 40:50Speaker 2: said before, baseball is a long it's a long season.
- 40:53Speaker 2: You go through stretches. I mean, even the best teams
- 40:55Speaker 2: go through tough stretches, and unfortunately, ours lasted a lot
- 40:59Speaker 2: long longer than we wanted it to. You know, I think,
- 41:03Speaker 2: you know, we trade for RAFFI I think there's just
- 41:07Speaker 2: some pressure maybe that we were putting on ourselves that
- 41:10Speaker 2: you know, all right, now we're in the thick of it,
- 41:13Speaker 2: and it went the wrong way for us, and it
- 41:18Speaker 2: got to the point where I don't know, we were
- 41:21Speaker 2: eight or nine games back to the wild card. I
- 41:23Speaker 2: don't know, probably fifteen back of you guys at the
- 41:26Speaker 2: first place, Like we kind of just said, screw it,
- 41:29Speaker 2: let's have some fun, let's win, try to win each day,
- 41:33Speaker 2: you know, try to find something to play for, right.
- 41:36Speaker 2: I think that was the big thing is we still
- 41:39Speaker 2: got a super young team, like a lot of young
- 41:42Speaker 2: guys and a lot of great veteran guys too, so
- 41:45Speaker 2: it was like, let's just go out there and have
- 41:47Speaker 2: some fun. I think we ended up going like an
- 41:49Speaker 2: eight or nine game win streak and kind of right
- 41:52Speaker 2: back in the thick of it. We just kept playing
- 41:54Speaker 2: well and I think keeping that same mentality where it's like,
- 41:57Speaker 2: all right, we're not worried about the next series or
- 42:01Speaker 2: you know, obviously the goal was to make the playoffs.
- 42:05Speaker 2: We all know that. It's not like we're trying to
- 42:06Speaker 2: hide from that, but just kind of try to win
- 42:10Speaker 2: the day and if you win the day, good things
- 42:12Speaker 2: will happen.
- 42:13Speaker 1: When when Devs got traded over and I remember, like
- 42:18Speaker 1: when we to help you a couple of years ago,
- 42:19Speaker 1: we got Shuzer and Trey Turner. I remember when we
- 42:23Speaker 1: got them, there was this sense of urgency that was
- 42:28Speaker 1: created maybe from the front office, not not necessarily a purpose,
- 42:32Speaker 1: but like, hey, here's here's some reinforcements, right. And I
- 42:38Speaker 1: don't know that it added extra pressure for us to win,
- 42:40Speaker 1: but it kind of felt like you So, when when
- 42:44Speaker 1: Devers got traded, is that kind of the feel of think.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Well, I think so. I think it was not really
- 42:50Speaker 2: talked about, right, We didn't feel like there was no
- 42:52Speaker 2: pressure from the front officer, the you know, coaching staff
- 42:55Speaker 2: or anything. But I think like subconsciously we just kind
- 42:59Speaker 2: of thought, all right, we got we got this top
- 43:03Speaker 2: ten hitting player in baseball, and now we're we're supposed
- 43:10Speaker 2: to be in it. And and I think it kind
- 43:11Speaker 2: of just changed the change the way we maybe thought
- 43:16Speaker 2: about things, and we just kind of put our put
- 43:18Speaker 2: some pressure on ourselves. I think, uh, it was just
- 43:21Speaker 2: like a month where everyone struggled. I you know, I
- 43:25Speaker 2: think I had close to a seventy r A that month.
- 43:27Speaker 2: It was just it was a weird month. Everything just
- 43:29Speaker 2: didn't go our way. And I do think there was
- 43:33Speaker 2: some some added pressure that wasn't actually like told to
- 43:38Speaker 2: us that there was like pressure. We just yeah, we
- 43:40Speaker 2: just kind of felt it. It was and like you
- 43:43Speaker 2: said a couple of years ago, it probably felt the
- 43:45Speaker 2: same way. It's you weren't told anything. It's not like
- 43:50Speaker 2: it just kind of happens.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean when you add in a add in guys,
- 43:55Speaker 1: it's like, Okay, they're added in guys so we can
- 43:57Speaker 1: play better. So like now we have to play better,
- 44:00Speaker 1: right to do that? Okay, So I do want to
- 44:02Speaker 1: talk about a little bit about a little bit about
- 44:04Speaker 1: playing an Oracle. I really do. I really like playing
- 44:08Speaker 1: in Oracle. I really like the stadium. The only thing
- 44:10Speaker 1: I really don't like is that it's cold all the time. Yeah.
- 44:14Speaker 1: But from your perspective, obviously playing for the Giants, like,
- 44:16Speaker 1: how do you how do you do you really do
- 44:18Speaker 1: you love playing Oracle and especially with it being somewhat
- 44:21Speaker 1: of a picture's park, Like, is it like when you
- 44:23Speaker 1: pitch at home. You got the weather, you got things
- 44:25Speaker 1: going before, you got the fans all these other things.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Definitely, I definitely hear the cold stuff, like the hitters
- 44:33Speaker 2: and position players definitely feel it more than like when
- 44:36Speaker 2: I'm pitching out there, it doesn't feel cold to me.
- 44:39Speaker 2: I'm involved in every pitch. Sometimes, like maybe later in
- 44:44Speaker 2: the game when you might sit for a little bit,
- 44:45Speaker 2: you go out there. It's a little cold and it
- 44:46Speaker 2: takes a little time, but it really is a great
- 44:49Speaker 2: place to pitch. I think the fans really appreciate pitching there,
- 44:54Speaker 2: which is like I really appreciate that, and I do
- 44:58Speaker 2: think it is. It's got to be one of the
- 44:59Speaker 2: most beautifootball parks in baseball. So I love it there.
- 45:05Speaker 2: I always hear I don't hear it, but like I
- 45:09Speaker 2: hear you guys talk about like the fans there, oh,
- 45:12Speaker 2: ruthless and ruthless out there, which is crazy because I
- 45:15Speaker 2: could say the same thing about like going to if
- 45:17Speaker 2: I go to Dodger Stick, I'll hear that. Or I
- 45:20Speaker 2: think Philly's rough, but but I always hear the Giants fans.
- 45:24Speaker 2: I'm like, man, I don't I don't see it there.
- 45:26Speaker 2: I know they talk like the you're a bum, like
- 45:30Speaker 2: an outfit, but that's just like, but I think it's
- 45:33Speaker 2: in the it's near the dugout.
- 45:34Speaker 1: It's near the dugouts, and it's in the outfield too.
- 45:38Speaker 1: They say you're a bumb but that's just what they
- 45:41Speaker 1: collectively say together, like you're not.
- 45:43Speaker 2: There's some stuff in between them and.
- 45:45Speaker 1: Dude, they're letting you have it and there's nothing, nothing
- 45:49Speaker 1: off the table, like it's your wife, your kids, your
- 45:53Speaker 1: your parents.
- 45:54Speaker 2: You.
- 45:55Speaker 1: I mean, like they let you have it, bro, they
- 45:57Speaker 1: let you have it. So but it's good though, it's
- 46:00Speaker 1: good like it.
- 46:00Speaker 2: I think that's what I mean.
- 46:02Speaker 1: I hear that all you go to LA.
- 46:04Speaker 2: You hear that New York especially, Man, honestly, the mess
- 46:08Speaker 2: is worse than the I think had that, but you
- 46:12Speaker 2: probably have a different experience with the Boston Boston. So
- 46:16Speaker 2: it's like, you know, I heard you and Jackson talking
- 46:20Speaker 2: about it, right, So it's like, but that's you know,
- 46:23Speaker 2: two fan bases that to you, guys play for two
- 46:26Speaker 2: teams that are fan based, doesn't necessarily like and say
- 46:29Speaker 2: it's the same when we go to you know, Dodger
- 46:32Speaker 2: Stadium or San Diego. Hear a lot like that's what
- 46:36Speaker 2: makes it fun. I think that's what.
- 46:37Speaker 1: Adds to it. That it adds and we have to
- 46:41Speaker 1: h we hear it, you know, we hear it. And
- 46:43Speaker 1: sometimes it's some of the stuff like makes you mad.
- 46:45Speaker 1: But you also have to remember like that's exactly what
- 46:48Speaker 1: they're trying to do off your game, and so you
- 46:51Speaker 1: have to like mentally mentally lock in, which is really
- 46:54Speaker 1: hard before I let you go though, because I know
- 46:56Speaker 1: we got to go to work obviously. So Barry Bonds
- 47:01Speaker 1: is a huge part of the Giants and whatnot. And
- 47:06Speaker 1: I'm assuming you guys have a relationship yeap. And it
- 47:10Speaker 1: was talked about like did you have you guys talked
- 47:12Speaker 1: about like if you faced him or whatever? Has that
- 47:15Speaker 1: has that come up at all?
- 47:16Speaker 2: He So Barry's in our clubhouse pretty much every day,
- 47:21Speaker 2: and I get along with Barry really well. He's uh,
- 47:25Speaker 2: He's been awesome for me every single time. The first
- 47:29Speaker 2: thing he says is, man, I just want to see
- 47:32Speaker 2: one time one time. And I'm like, man, Barry, you
- 47:36Speaker 2: take me deep. I get it. I get it, you know,
- 47:39Speaker 2: but it's it's like Barry truly does not like pictures, like, oh,
- 47:44Speaker 2: just just he does not like pictures. Like if if
- 47:48Speaker 2: I could ask Barry a question about like hitting, and
- 47:50Speaker 2: he's like, I'm not going to give you any secrets.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Like I'm like, Barry, I'm on the giants, come on
- 47:55Speaker 2: help me. Yeah, but he just like that's his But
- 47:59Speaker 2: that's what made him so good, you know, and he
- 48:02Speaker 2: really does. Uh it's great for every time he comes
- 48:06Speaker 2: in and they show him on the big screen and
- 48:08Speaker 2: every time he's in there, you know it's it's Berry Bonds, right.
- 48:12Speaker 2: But yeah, he just I don't want to face him.
- 48:14Speaker 2: I wish. I mean, I do want to face him, right,
- 48:16Speaker 2: like he always want to face the best, But I
- 48:19Speaker 2: don't really want to see a ball going in the water.
- 48:21Speaker 1: Okay, So if you had, if you had to take
- 48:23Speaker 1: me before I let you go, if you had a bat,
- 48:26Speaker 1: like you had five pitches, what would be your sequence
- 48:32Speaker 1: with Barry to get him out?
- 48:34Speaker 2: Man?
- 48:34Speaker 1: For a punch out? Now obviously this is this is
- 48:38Speaker 1: with you executing the pitches.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Okay, Uh, I probably start him. Man, He's one of
- 48:49Speaker 2: those guys where I think the first time I face him,
- 48:52Speaker 2: probably wouldn't throw him fastball.
- 48:53Speaker 1: You would not throw fastball. He's the first pitch was
- 48:57Speaker 1: pitch one.
- 48:57Speaker 2: I'm probably going back door, backdoor slider.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Back door slider, strike one, strike one.
- 49:02Speaker 2: I'll probably just keep throwing them.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Changes and then maybe, maybe, just maybe.
- 49:11Speaker 2: I'll try to surprise him with a four steam or
- 49:13Speaker 2: something like up an end or something.
- 49:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:16Speaker 2: I mean, but that's it. Like you watch his videos
- 49:18Speaker 2: and you see guys try to like maybe I try
- 49:22Speaker 2: to like front hip of two seam or something like.
- 49:24Speaker 2: I don't think that really works against him. I don't
- 49:26Speaker 2: know what would work against him. I don't know either.
- 49:28Speaker 2: That's so I said the first time, I'm probably just
- 49:29Speaker 2: gonna throw him, throw him a back door slider, try
- 49:32Speaker 2: to steal a strike. If I miss, I'm absolutely screwed, right,
- 49:36Speaker 2: and then it's like okay, I just throw them all changes.
- 49:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that's I feel like, I feel like
- 49:41Speaker 1: just your style of picture against it, Like if it
- 49:45Speaker 1: if it was like you had one hundred in your
- 49:46Speaker 1: back pocket and you're like Miserowski.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Yeah, like you challenge way more room. You can't challenge with.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Bro. And I'm not even trying to talk bad but like,
- 49:57Speaker 1: I don't know what you can throw it all I'm.
- 49:59Speaker 2: Saying, you know, I think I gotta hopefully make him chase.
- 50:02Speaker 1: For that would be and that's the thing. He didn't
- 50:06Speaker 1: do that either, so good luck. Well, well, you know,
- 50:09Speaker 1: we could set it up on the show or something.
- 50:11Speaker 1: We'll set up Barry Bonds versus Logan Web. All right.
- 50:14Speaker 2: You know it's crazy with him is he's getting the
- 50:15Speaker 2: cage and he could probably hit You can probably hit
- 50:20Speaker 2: it right now.
- 50:21Speaker 1: I mean it's crazy and it never leaves, and he
- 50:25Speaker 1: looks good, he takes good.
- 50:26Speaker 2: He'll he'll get in there and be like all right,
- 50:29Speaker 2: like someone's throwing. He's like, all right, I'm gonna do
- 50:31Speaker 2: the first one. I'll hit like this over there, right,
- 50:34Speaker 2: and then he's like, by pitch three, I'll get him
- 50:36Speaker 2: and I'll go and like he'll do it.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Like he'll good for him. Well that's that's why he's
- 50:43Speaker 1: a legend. So but anyways, bro, thanks for coming on
- 50:46Speaker 1: the show man And uh oh, I do want to
- 50:49Speaker 1: say this. I'm expecting you to pitch in the WBC,
