- 0:00Speaker 1: Still too sour. Apparently my grind is too coarse. It's
- 0:03Speaker 1: one more thing.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm strong and getty. One more thing.
- 0:09Speaker 1: That's the sort of lingo we throw around, those of
- 0:12Speaker 1: us who make our espresso at home with our fancy machines.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Oh no, and you're going to tell us of how
- 0:19Speaker 2: it is which leads me to this, just the whole
- 0:22Speaker 2: concept of these sorts of things which I want to
- 0:25Speaker 2: talk about a little bit.
- 0:26Speaker 1: As my son went and watched a blacksmith friend of
- 0:28Speaker 1: mine who does blacksmithing. He's a forger, so I'm a
- 0:32Speaker 1: home espresso connoisseur. He's a forger. That sort of thing.
- 0:35Speaker 1: But a little set up to that is this comedy
- 0:39Speaker 1: thing I came across of called the most hipster man
- 0:42Speaker 1: in the world.
- 0:45Speaker 3: He listens to bands that broke up before they formed.
- 0:48Speaker 3: He gentrified a taco stand by asking for ioli. He
- 0:52Speaker 3: grows his own beard oil. His bicycle has no breaks
- 0:57Speaker 3: because stopping is for sellouts. He smokes a pipe, but
- 1:01Speaker 3: only indoors, and only while listening to Mongolian throat singing.
- 1:05Speaker 3: He gave his baby a typewriter as a toy. He
- 1:08Speaker 3: makes his own soap but never uses it. He once
- 1:12Speaker 3: ghosted someone for not knowing what a modular synth is.
- 1:16Speaker 3: His apartment is furnished with upcycled milk crates from dairies
- 1:19Speaker 3: that went bankrupt in the eighties. He once got into
- 1:23Speaker 3: a bar fight over a fleet Fox's lyric. He refuses
- 1:27Speaker 3: to use Google Maps. He gets directions from indie baristas instead.
- 1:31Speaker 3: He discovered kale before it was a super food. Okay,
- 1:34Speaker 3: that mass he denies knowing it.
- 1:36Speaker 1: That makes the point that sort of he grows his
- 1:39Speaker 1: own beard oil.
- 1:42Speaker 2: He's the most hipster man in the world.
- 1:44Speaker 1: So I was thinking about this over the weekends, and
- 1:46Speaker 1: I got my fancy espression machine that I'm struggling to
- 1:48Speaker 1: figure out how to use.
- 1:50Speaker 4: God is.
- 1:52Speaker 1: A long run, it'll be cheaper than the pods. The
- 1:54Speaker 1: pods are actually kind of expensive, you know, if you
- 1:56Speaker 1: use curried pods and espresso pods. You add it up.
- 1:58Speaker 1: However much coffee you drink a fair amount of money.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It'll be cheaper in the long run to do it
- 2:02Speaker 1: this way. But I was struggling with this thing. I
- 2:05Speaker 1: made my first cup of coffee at like midnight on
- 2:07Speaker 1: Friday night. I made decalf to make sure I wouldn't
- 2:10Speaker 1: be able to note it was so good. I thought,
- 2:12Speaker 1: this is awesome. I'm glad I did. This is the
- 2:13Speaker 1: best cup of coffee I've ever had. Then the next morning,
- 2:16Speaker 1: when I tried to make caffeinated stuff, It's like, this
- 2:20Speaker 1: is horrible. If this was the circle k, I'd asked
- 2:22Speaker 1: for my money back. So and that's what I've been
- 2:25Speaker 1: dealing with all the week. And then you get into
- 2:26Speaker 1: the how course is your grind? And is the drip?
- 2:29Speaker 1: How many seconds does it take to make your espresso?
- 2:31Speaker 1: Because between twelve and fifteen seconds is ideal? More than
- 2:35Speaker 1: that or less than that? Blah blah blah blah blah,
- 2:37Speaker 1: all that sort of If you'd said, how coarse is
- 2:41Speaker 1: your grind?
- 2:43Speaker 2: What am I talking about? I might have said skateboarding
- 2:47Speaker 2: could have been yeah, yeah, yeah, but it's coffee talking coffee.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But eist And there are all these rabbit holes of
- 2:55Speaker 1: all these different sorts of things and how long you beans,
- 3:01Speaker 1: how long between roasting and when you use them? I mean,
- 3:03Speaker 1: just all this different sort of stuff, right, But I
- 3:08Speaker 1: was really digging it as something to do and just
- 3:11Speaker 1: focus on or whatever and try to perfect. And then
- 3:14Speaker 1: I got this friend who he always wears a T
- 3:17Speaker 1: shirt that says something about being a blacksmith, blacksmith's do
- 3:21Speaker 1: it with an apron or whatever. And I asked him
- 3:26Speaker 1: about it one time. He said, yeah, that's my hobby.
- 3:28Speaker 1: That's what I did. And I said, well, my son
- 3:29Speaker 1: really loves it. Anytime we're at a fair or something
- 3:32Speaker 1: where they got a blacksmith making stuff, he always wants
- 3:34Speaker 1: to watch it. And I said, if you're ever doing that,
- 3:36Speaker 1: i'd love it. He said, oh, I have kids come
- 3:37Speaker 1: over all the time. I love sharing the craft. So well,
- 3:40Speaker 1: that's great, he texted me. On Saturday morning, we went
- 3:42Speaker 1: over to his house. He's got this big setup in
- 3:44Speaker 1: his garage and he's got the super hot whatever you
- 3:47Speaker 1: call that piece of machinery you stick the metal in
- 3:49Speaker 1: to get it two thousand degrees so you could actually
- 3:52Speaker 1: mold it with a hammer and everything like that, and
- 3:54Speaker 1: he started blacksmith and some stuff and we are there
- 3:57Speaker 1: for a couple hours and Henry really really enjoyed it.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I enjoyed watching it. But it's a very hipster sort
- 4:01Speaker 1: of thing in a hipster sort of town that he's
- 4:06Speaker 1: making stuff as forging his own steel or whatever. They're Yeah,
- 4:10Speaker 1: it is kind.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Of funny how many of the hipster conceits and you know,
- 4:15Speaker 2: to each their own that sounds cool to me. It's
- 4:18Speaker 2: very zen. I'm sure it's a hobby. But how many
- 4:21Speaker 2: of the hipster conceits are old timey, like the whole
- 4:25Speaker 2: steam punk thing. Yeah, you look like, you know, you
- 4:29Speaker 2: just came off the prairie in eighteen forty. It's just
- 4:34Speaker 2: it's old timey as hip.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I was talking to him, and over the week,
- 4:37Speaker 1: she's really into sewing her own clothes to the most
- 4:41Speaker 1: she can. You know, he can't do everything because who's
- 4:43Speaker 1: got the time, but as many things she can, she
- 4:45Speaker 1: sews her own clothes. And I was just wondering about
- 4:47Speaker 1: that because I've mocked this sort of hipster stuff.
- 4:50Speaker 2: He grows his own beard oil.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I've mocked this sort of hipster stuff so much. But
- 4:54Speaker 1: as I was making this coffee, I mean, there's way
- 4:56Speaker 1: worse things I could be doing with my time than
- 4:59Speaker 1: trying to figure out how to perfect my espresso beans.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Or him with his blacksmithing and his garage and everything
- 5:04Speaker 1: like that. He's an it in a college it guy
- 5:08Speaker 1: in a college town, right. Yeah, he actually is hoping
- 5:11Speaker 1: to get good enough at the blacksmithing and be able
- 5:14Speaker 1: to sell enough stuff that he can quit his it job.
- 5:17Speaker 1: He just he finds it so much more rewarding. And
- 5:20Speaker 1: that's the sort of a thing with the coffee. He
- 5:23Speaker 1: finds it so much more rewarding, he said. Spending a
- 5:26Speaker 1: couple of hours doing that blacksmith stuff and making something
- 5:29Speaker 1: with a hammer and bending it with the you know,
- 5:31Speaker 1: the physical part of it and everything like that. Then
- 5:33Speaker 1: he gets from his it job, and I got I
- 5:36Speaker 1: was feeling rewarded by, you know, making my grind finer
- 5:41Speaker 1: and getting the temperature a little hotter and tasting it
- 5:43Speaker 1: no too much, Just just that sort of thing. I
- 5:46Speaker 1: told the guy. My example of when we first got
- 5:48Speaker 1: on on the second farm that we lived in, I
- 5:51Speaker 1: was out in this back pasture and I'd set up
- 5:54Speaker 1: the giant sprinkler system when I was watering that pasture.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I had such a feeling of satisfaction from that I
- 6:00Speaker 1: rarely get in life. It's some sort of you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: caveman style. You're able to support yourself, You're able to
- 6:10Speaker 1: be self sufficient. I don't know exactly where it comes from, right,
- 6:14Speaker 1: figuring out how to make your own coffee, figuring out
- 6:16Speaker 1: how to Blacksmith figuring out how to water or field.
- 6:18Speaker 1: I don't know, but there's something that goes on there
- 6:20Speaker 1: that doesn't happen with a lot of the modern crap
- 6:22Speaker 1: we do.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Right, you know, we could take a turn into AI
- 6:28Speaker 2: and how removing people's sense of purpose is going to
- 6:31Speaker 2: be terrible, but it occurs to me. I know, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 2: I got a pretty good handful of UH friends and
- 6:36Speaker 2: golf buddies who are still working, and a pretty good
- 6:38Speaker 2: handful that are retired, and a lot of the retired
- 6:41Speaker 2: guys who seem happy. They develop passions like that. Like
- 6:45Speaker 2: my buddy Rob is like a master gardener, including orchids.
- 6:50Speaker 2: He raises orchids, just these exquisite flowers that you gotta
- 6:54Speaker 2: know what you're doing and do it very very carefully.
- 6:57Speaker 2: So yeah, you can identify what what trips your trigger,
- 7:01Speaker 2: but it's absolutely undeniable. What you said. You get a
- 7:03Speaker 2: feeling of satisfaction from that sort of thing. That's just joy.
- 7:08Speaker 2: It's like deep in UKD. You look like you agree,
- 7:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, totally.
- 7:12Speaker 5: And I mean my dad's come on this show a
- 7:14Speaker 5: few times and he's had an amazing background, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 5: paramedic and balmer, judge. One of his favorite things to
- 7:20Speaker 5: do on the planet right now is he makes killer
- 7:23Speaker 5: sourdough bread. Yeah, and so every now, like probably twice
- 7:27Speaker 5: a week, I'll get a picture from my mom of
- 7:29Speaker 5: him with his we call them Larry's loaves, with this
- 7:32Speaker 5: little loaf of bread that he made, and that's like
- 7:34Speaker 5: one of his favorite things on the planet to do.
- 7:36Speaker 1: That'd be very similar to the coffee thing I'm doing.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I'd be trying different temperatures and recipes and yeah this week.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, man, I'm jealous of that. A nice
- 7:45Speaker 2: warm slice of sour dough with butter.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it's so good.
- 7:48Speaker 2: It's the satisfaction of you making it yourself.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. So, having mocked the hipster stuff for so
- 7:54Speaker 1: many years and I will continue to, I was trying
- 7:56Speaker 1: to figure out where my mockery of this sort of
- 7:58Speaker 1: thing ends and my understand why people like it begins.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Maybe it has a lot to do with how much
- 8:05Speaker 1: you freaking talk about it to other people.
- 8:07Speaker 2: May Yeah, although you know, there's like I dress like,
- 8:13Speaker 2: you know again, just came off the prairie in eighteen
- 8:15Speaker 2: sixty because it's hip your buddy the blacksmith, you would
- 8:19Speaker 2: not hang with that if it was a conceit.
- 8:22Speaker 1: No, because it's too much work.
- 8:24Speaker 2: So you've got like the show body conceit hipster stuff,
- 8:28Speaker 2: and then you've got like like you're doing with the
- 8:31Speaker 2: coffee or he's doing.
- 8:32Speaker 1: That's different.
- 8:33Speaker 2: That's investing yourself in learning something and overcoming the challenges
- 8:37Speaker 2: that I totally respect.
- 8:39Speaker 1: One other aspect of all of this that I have
- 8:43Speaker 1: found in a couple of different realms of life is
- 8:46Speaker 1: how many people, because of YouTube and that sort of thing,
- 8:51Speaker 1: can become, you know, support themselves on these kind of
- 8:55Speaker 1: things I've come across. I didn't even know they even existed.
- 8:58Speaker 1: I know now like ten people people that have coffee
- 9:01Speaker 1: related YouTube channels with like two or three million followers
- 9:06Speaker 1: in some places where it's all about their expertise and
- 9:10Speaker 1: making a cup of expresswo at home, and they just
- 9:13Speaker 1: you know, they bought the camera gear and they got
- 9:15Speaker 1: a bit of a personality, and they spend some time working.
- 9:18Speaker 2: On it and.
- 9:21Speaker 1: It takes off, and you can tell from listening to
- 9:23Speaker 1: them they got sponsors and all this fancy equipment gets
- 9:26Speaker 1: sent to them because they review it and stuff like that.
- 9:28Speaker 1: That didn't that was impossible not that many years ago.
- 9:31Speaker 1: I think that's really cool. And there's that for skateboarding
- 9:35Speaker 1: or guitars or making coffee or I'm sure there are
- 9:39Speaker 1: a gazillion well known bred people every aspect of it.
- 9:44Speaker 1: If you're good at something and you got a bit
- 9:46Speaker 1: of a personality, you buy a camera, you can you
- 9:48Speaker 1: can turn it into a life.
- 9:50Speaker 2: I wish I had expertise in anything.
- 9:53Speaker 1: I know me too, other than this.
- 9:55Speaker 2: And you know it's funny. Oh just asn't aside. I was.
- 10:00Speaker 2: I met a friend's son the other day and he said,
- 10:03Speaker 2: Joe here has a podcast because he's like in his
- 10:07Speaker 2: sixties or late fifties and he doesn't realize to young people,
- 10:11Speaker 2: everybody's got a fucking podcast. Yeah right, sorry Hanson, Yeah please, no, No,
- 10:18Speaker 2: that's just it's like saying he has a blog.
- 10:21Speaker 1: You should know he cares. You should say to him,
- 10:23Speaker 1: would you like a podcast? I can show you about
- 10:24Speaker 1: three minutes how you could have a podcast? Well, I'm
- 10:27Speaker 1: on your phone, start talking into it. Look, you got
- 10:29Speaker 1: a podcast.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Allegedly conceivably you know, I you us could you know
- 10:37Speaker 2: do like YouTube videos for how to have a good podcast,
- 10:40Speaker 2: but the video would be this long. Either got it
- 10:43Speaker 2: or you don't. And if you got it, you got
- 10:46Speaker 2: to do it a bunch to get better at it.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting how many people have carved out a
- 10:52Speaker 1: niche for themselves, A big niche. You shouldn't even really
- 10:55Speaker 1: call it a niche. If you got three million people
- 10:57Speaker 1: tune in what you have to say, that's not a niche.
- 11:00Speaker 2: That's a home run.
- 11:00Speaker 1: But there's lots of people in every aspect of life
- 11:03Speaker 1: that you could possibly come up with. That's a really
- 11:07Speaker 1: cool thing, you know.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Here, here's one. I get a start a YouTube channel
- 11:12Speaker 2: about building bird houses, build beautiful bird houses, triple be channel.
- 11:19Speaker 2: And the joke would be, I suck at it. I
- 11:23Speaker 2: give all the instructions, you know, speak beautifully about and
- 11:27Speaker 2: then measure twice and cut once, and then I put
- 11:29Speaker 2: it together and I just build the world shitty. It's
- 11:31Speaker 2: a bird out because trust me, I would I am
- 11:35Speaker 2: so bad at that.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Well, I'd watch the hell out of that seriously all
- 11:42Speaker 4: the time. Oh yeah, I would never crack a smile.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Oh that doesn't line up, never wink at the audience
- 11:49Speaker 4: at all, and every time at the end, I'd be like, yes, yeah,
- 11:54Speaker 4: I'm not sure what happened.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Oh boy, Joe.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna do the same thing, but with cakes. I
- 12:02Speaker 2: don't know how to.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Make your cake, Joe, come out raw.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I'll burn myself on the oven the end.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Of every Birdhouse episode, I don't know that.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I don't know what happened.
- 12:12Speaker 1: See you next time. Well, I guess that's it. Your
- 12:21Speaker 1: next half of Joe.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Builds Birdhouses, building beautiful birdhouses. Welcome back to Triple B.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I'm Joe, Eddy
