- 0:02Spiritual seekers are frequently advised not to indulge in or
- 0:06display any powers that arise along the way.
- 0:11Patanjali, in his Yoga Sutras, describes a number of powers
- 0:16that can arise naturally through the practice of yoga, and
- 0:20seekers throughout the ages have validated the reality of powers
- 0:24that develop as the concentration of force to Persia
- 0:29effectuates openings in the various energy centers of the
- 0:32being, and as the powers of the vital being and the mind are
- 0:37activated. The primary objection to the
- 0:40exercise of any of these powers has always been the potential
- 0:45for distraction or for the increase of egoism, which then
- 0:50works to neutralize the yogic practice in its essential
- 0:53pursuit. There are similar proscriptions
- 0:57to avoid involvement with money wealth as it too tends to
- 1:02corrupt or mislead the practitioner.
- 1:05It is not just aspirants who are confronted by these issues.
- 1:09Seasoned yogis, some who have taken up positions of teaching
- 1:13and guiding others are subject to the same temptations to use
- 1:17the powers, and some succumb to demonstrating these powers,
- 1:22initially with the idea of providing a real example of the
- 1:26powers of the yogic practice for the disciples, but later as an
- 1:31expression of vanity and pride. In his book The Mother, Sri
- 1:38Aurobindo specifically addresses the question of money as a
- 1:42representative of a universal force or power that has been the
- 1:47source of much concern for practitioners everywhere.
- 1:51Some paths enjoin a vow of poverty on the seekers to help
- 1:57them avoid the distraction, the temptation and the corruption
- 2:02that can occur through seeking after handling or applying the
- 2:07money power. Sri Aurobindo points out that
- 2:11money is a power of the divine which has been frequently
- 2:14misused and corrupted, but which can and should be applied for
- 2:19the divine manifestation in its right form and for the right
- 2:23purpose with the right intention.
- 2:26In this sense, money stands as a representative of the other
- 2:30powers that develop. The issue is not the use or
- 2:35avoidance of the powers that arise naturally, but the proper
- 2:39use at the proper time for the proper purpose, in the proper
- 2:44way, without intervention of the egoistic personality and in
- 2:50furtherance of the divine intention in the creation.
- 2:54The real issue then is the inner poise of the practitioner or
- 2:58seeker. It may be noted that Patanjali
- 3:02sets forth preliminary practices intended to remove the action of
- 3:07desire and egoism, the yamas and niyamas, as well as the
- 3:12development of a strong seat by which to hold the powers that
- 3:16arise, and the practice of pranayama to purify the nerves
- 3:21and prepare the energy channels for holding and deploying the
- 3:25forces that enter the being. Through the deeper practices
- 3:28that follow these preliminary steps, by eliminating the pull
- 3:33of the ego, the promptings of desire, the uprising of vanity
- 3:39and pride, or the desire for power and control over others,
- 3:44the seeker can avoid the pitfalls that arise from those
- 3:48causes and can then utilize the naturally developing powers of
- 3:53action that are part of the evolving expression of the
- 3:56divine in the manifested universe.
- 4:01Just as various powers of vital nature developed as a next stage
- 4:05of the evolution of consciousness out of the
- 4:08material force, and just as the mental powers have developed as
- 4:12a further evolution of consciousness, so one would
- 4:16anticipate and expect further powers to develop as the process
- 4:22continues. These powers are essential
- 4:25elements of the future expression of consciousness in
- 4:29the world and thus should not be denied out of hand.
- 4:36A disciple cites an answer from the Mother in her Questions and
- 4:39Answers. 1929 from 14th April. They powers have to be used in
- 4:46the same way as they came. They come by union with the
- 4:50Divine. They must be used by the will of
- 4:53the Divine and not for display. The Mother notes.
- 5:00If you use power to show that you possess it, it becomes so
- 5:04full of falsehood and untruth that finally it disappears.
- 5:09But it is not always thus, because, as I said at the
- 5:12beginning, when it concerns a power like the power of healing,
- 5:16or the power of changing an altogether external thing, of
- 5:21making an unfavorable circumstance favorable, of
- 5:24finding lost objects, all these countless little miracles which
- 5:29are found in all religions, it is much more easy and even more
- 5:34effective to do these miracles with the help of the entities of
- 5:39the vital world, which are not always recommendable.
- 5:43Far from it. And then these beings make fun
- 5:47of you. This begins very well, very
- 5:50brilliantly, and usually finishes very badly.
- 5:55I know the story of a man who had a few small powers and
- 5:58indulged in all kinds of so-called spiritualist
- 6:00practices, and through repeated exercises he had succeeded in
- 6:05coming into conscious contact with what he called a spirit.
- 6:10This man was doing business. He was a financier and was even
- 6:15a speculator. His relations with his spirit
- 6:18were of a very practical kind. This spirit used to tell him
- 6:22when the stocks and shares would go up and when they would come
- 6:26down. It told him sell this, buy that.
- 6:32It gave him very precise financial particulars.
- 6:36For years he had been listening to his spirit and had followed
- 6:40it and was fantastically successful.
- 6:43He became tremendously rich and naturally boasted a lot about
- 6:47the spirit which guided him. He used to tell everybody, you
- 6:52see, it is really worth while learning how to put oneself in
- 6:56contact with these spirits. But one day he met a man who was
- 7:01a little wiser, who told him, take care.
- 7:05He did not listen to him. He was swollen with his power
- 7:09and ambition, and it was then that this spirit gave him a last
- 7:13advice. Now you can become the richest
- 7:16man in the world. Your ambition will be fulfilled.
- 7:20You have only to follow my direction.
- 7:23Do this, put all that you have into this transaction, and you
- 7:28will become the richest man in the world.
- 7:31The stupid fool did not even realize the trap laid for him.
- 7:35For years he had followed his guide and succeeded, so he
- 7:40followed the last direction and he lost everything to the last
- 7:45penny. So you see, there are small
- 7:49entities who make fun of you and to make sure of you they work
- 7:53these little miracles to encourage you, and when they
- 7:56feel that you are well trapped, they play a fine trick upon you
- 8:01and it is all over with you. End Quote Reference Sriyorobindu
