- 0:00Speaker 1: 's dive right into a Jeff Legwall conversation and begin
- 0:02Speaker 1: our number two. Leggie is brought to you by the
- 0:04Speaker 1: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers ibe W Local sixty eight.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You start with a job, and you end with a career, Jeff,
- 0:13Speaker 1: Tyson Anderson safety is apparently now a Bronco. What is
- 0:19Speaker 1: the envisioned role for new guy Tyson Anderson.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Well, he has zero starts in his NFL career, so
- 0:28Speaker 2: you're you're.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Looking at how many finishes?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Jeff, Yeah, No, this is a right out of the gate.
- 0:35Speaker 2: It's a special team signing. Yeah. Again, this is their
- 0:40Speaker 2: very very targeted approach to free agency that they have
- 0:44Speaker 2: a specific job in mind for this kind of player,
- 0:48Speaker 2: and they waited until they could get them, you know,
- 0:53Speaker 2: at their price essentially. But you know, he's going into
- 0:56Speaker 2: his fourth year. He's played in every game of his career.
- 1:01Speaker 2: He's just never started, so and I think they they
- 1:05Speaker 2: see some potential in the defense if they develop in
- 1:09Speaker 2: all those things. But this is a special team's guy.
- 1:13Speaker 1: All right, Jeff, uh, is there any possibility and no
- 1:17Speaker 1: Tyson Anderson follow up unbelievable.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Sorry, I don't when the guy has no starts and Frankly,
- 1:22Speaker 3: who was it they who pulled out the rating the
- 1:24Speaker 3: other day where he was like?
- 1:26Speaker 4: Who was it? Spring?
- 1:27Speaker 3: When that spring where we found out he was like
- 1:29Speaker 3: three from the very bottom as far as whatever the
- 1:31Speaker 3: rating was possible for a player. You don't remember that
- 1:35Speaker 3: from our high five on Wednesday?
- 1:37Speaker 1: Oh it was his approximate value on you you that
- 1:40Speaker 1: found that very low?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:41Speaker 1: He got a one last year?
- 1:43Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:43Speaker 1: One?
- 1:44Speaker 3: Jeff, this is the kind of information that we give you.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I mean, this dude, you don't need him at all?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Uh?
- 1:48Speaker 3: David and Joku, Nate and I just got done talking
- 1:50Speaker 3: about will they do anything with the tight end position?
- 1:52Speaker 3: Is this a guy that would possibly fit the system
- 1:54Speaker 3: if they chose to bring him in? You talked about
- 1:57Speaker 3: the targeted approach rate? There is there any other targeting guy?
- 2:01Speaker 4: Or are they just done? Do we just have to
- 2:02Speaker 4: accept it? You?
- 2:04Speaker 3: I guess you told us whenever we last talk Wednesday,
- 2:07Speaker 3: you think maybe the June first so get action?
- 2:10Speaker 4: Is that just what we're waiting on right now?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Well? I mean you know, look, you guys know I
- 2:15Speaker 2: never say never with this team. I have seen too
- 2:18Speaker 2: much over the years to officially declare them done with anything.
- 2:24Speaker 2: They're always gonna look, they're always gonna consider players like
- 2:28Speaker 2: in Djoku. But I will say and have said to you, guys,
- 2:32Speaker 2: when price point meets demand, that's when the player arrives.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And obviously there is no other free agent. I mean,
- 2:41Speaker 2: they sign Tyson Anderson, is they're only outside free agent.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And I mean, just logically, that tells you no one
- 2:52Speaker 2: else in the marketplace from another team met price point
- 2:57Speaker 2: and demand at those points did not intersect at any
- 3:01Speaker 2: point right now for another player. I think, you know, again,
- 3:06Speaker 2: everybody can be fitted. To me, that's always the case.
- 3:09Speaker 2: But the information I have is you might see a
- 3:13Speaker 2: Dobbins signing later, you know, when they see what the
- 3:17Speaker 2: draft unfolds. You know, they see who else is still
- 3:21Speaker 2: out there, They see the team on the field and
- 3:24Speaker 2: OTAs and some of the other things, and they can
- 3:28Speaker 2: get have a little more information about the guys coming
- 3:31Speaker 2: back from the injury and all those things. But right
- 3:34Speaker 2: now I'm not getting the impression that there is another
- 3:38Speaker 2: signing in their pocket. I think their feeling is they
- 3:41Speaker 2: expended a lot of energy and capital for Jalen Wattle too.
- 3:46Speaker 4: All right, So let me follow up with this because.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And again Andy, they re signed three tight ends of
- 3:52Speaker 2: their own.
- 3:53Speaker 3: I know, but I mean whatever those three tight ends
- 3:55Speaker 3: have been about worth the one share that that that.
- 3:58Speaker 2: This safety has been so well, I'm just saying the
- 4:01Speaker 2: Wattle trade means this team's in three wide an awful lot. Okay,
- 4:07Speaker 2: Grim's got another year left on the deal. I mean,
- 4:10Speaker 2: how much more are you going to expend at a
- 4:12Speaker 2: position where you might only have one of them on
- 4:15Speaker 2: the field? Uh much of the time.
- 4:18Speaker 3: All right, So, Sean Payton tells Kay Adams, because what
- 4:22Speaker 3: I love about avingue On is you you like to
- 4:24Speaker 3: really slice through fact in fiction, right, Sean Payton tells
- 4:27Speaker 3: Kate Adams, A free agency didn't go the way they
- 4:30Speaker 3: wanted to or hoped wherever you put it. But the
- 4:32Speaker 3: bottom line is he suggested to you other there's some
- 4:34Speaker 3: guys maybe we wanted but we weren't able to get.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Who do you think they're most disappointed they didn't get
- 4:38Speaker 3: in the building? Was it your guy in Oconquo? Was
- 4:41Speaker 3: it a hn I guess that's how we're saying it now.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Who do you think if they had one guy you
- 4:46Speaker 3: think they did want, who would that be that maybe
- 4:49Speaker 3: they didn't even get in the building.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Well they were. They were in on the receiver Romeo
- 4:55Speaker 2: Dobbs okay, and they were in on a chain a Chen.
- 5:00Speaker 4: Sure.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Uh, they were in on those, those two guys the
- 5:03Speaker 2: deepest in the in the in the going around. But
- 5:08Speaker 2: when again, price point went beyond where they were willing
- 5:11Speaker 2: to go. So when he says it didn't go the
- 5:15Speaker 2: way they expected, that really means the guys were more
- 5:18Speaker 2: expensive than they wanted to spend.
- 5:21Speaker 1: That's just what it comes down to. The market didn't
- 5:24Speaker 1: hit where they wanted to be. Ultimately, Jeff making a
- 5:30Speaker 1: trade for Jalen Waddle making that upgrade at the skill position,
- 5:35Speaker 1: having to give up a one in a three, I
- 5:37Speaker 1: guess you do improve your your fourth round draft spot
- 5:39Speaker 1: by nineteen spots, I believe. So that's that's a nice
- 5:41Speaker 1: little carrot in that trade. But ultimately, I and again
- 5:46Speaker 1: we're parsing some of this out, some of this is semantic,
- 5:49Speaker 1: but like, did the Broncos want to avoid delving into
- 5:53Speaker 1: the trade market if they could have, But ultimately that
- 5:56Speaker 1: was the only way to get the upgrade that they
- 5:58Speaker 1: really wanted.
- 6:00Speaker 2: I think Andy, I think they, I mean they had
- 6:02Speaker 2: tried to. They at least tinkered with the idea of
- 6:05Speaker 2: getting Waddle in a trade at the deadline last season.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So this is not a new topic for them. This
- 6:12Speaker 2: is a player they wanted and they figured, as everyone
- 6:17Speaker 2: did in the league, the Dolphins were going full fire sale.
- 6:21Speaker 2: You know, it's at some point, you know. And by
- 6:23Speaker 2: the way, you know, I don't have a dog in
- 6:25Speaker 2: the hunt or anything, but if i'm Elik Willis, I'm like, hey,
- 6:28Speaker 2: wait a second. You know, you signed me and then
- 6:33Speaker 2: you got rid of all the guys. But anyway, you know,
- 6:37Speaker 2: I think that's they wanted to acquire him. I think
- 6:40Speaker 2: they may have surrendered a little more than they expected
- 6:45Speaker 2: because they they did not get anybody else in free agency,
- 6:49Speaker 2: so it put them in a position where if they
- 6:52Speaker 2: were going to get him, they were probably gonna have
- 6:55Speaker 2: to give up one more pick, or a higher round
- 6:59Speaker 2: pick than in the grouping of picks than they intended
- 7:03Speaker 2: along originally intended. You know, they'll never admit it, but
- 7:07Speaker 2: I would think that price was a little higher than
- 7:10Speaker 2: they planned on surrendering. All right.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Jeff legwalld with us here on a Monday afternoon talking
- 7:16Speaker 1: about the Broncos off season. Jeff, I want to pivot
- 7:19Speaker 1: the discussion something that your colleague Bill Barnwell wrote about
- 7:23Speaker 1: on ESPN dot com. He was writing about perceived roster
- 7:27Speaker 1: holes for every team in the NFL, and I was
- 7:30Speaker 1: a little surprised by what he brought up with the Broncos. Yes,
- 7:35Speaker 1: they lost John Franklin Myers, okay, and he was a
- 7:39Speaker 1: significant contributor. Dude's just a really frigging good football player,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and he it was a cou to get him for
- 7:45Speaker 1: a sixth rounder originally from the Jets. He was good
- 7:47Speaker 1: the entire time that he was a Bronco. His departure
- 7:52Speaker 1: kind of moving. Yomo wasa rique up in the packing
- 7:55Speaker 1: order at defensive tackle. And I know that the organization
- 8:00Speaker 1: likes him, But do the Broncos maybe still have to
- 8:04Speaker 1: address something at that position.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Oh? I don't think there's any question. And their thirty
- 8:10Speaker 2: visits reflect that they've got several defensive linemen in their
- 8:15Speaker 2: thirty visits, which are if you want a good tracker
- 8:18Speaker 2: for the Broncos. And that's why they don't give those
- 8:21Speaker 2: names up very easily because they're drafting those guys. Those
- 8:26Speaker 2: are very good indicators of who they like. And I mean,
- 8:32Speaker 2: the issue is it's not just snaps. I mean, Laza
- 8:36Speaker 2: Rique played four hundred and fifty some snaps. I think
- 8:40Speaker 2: John Franklin Myers played just over five hundred last year,
- 8:44Speaker 2: So the snap differential isn't different. But the quality of
- 8:48Speaker 2: snaps every snap Franklin Myers plays looks the same, you
- 8:53Speaker 2: know what I mean, It's the same level of effort, performance, assignment,
- 9:00Speaker 2: you know, sound, all of it. His snaps are way consistent.
- 9:05Speaker 2: That's the part you're trying to replace. Lasa Rique had
- 9:09Speaker 2: some very good looking snaps when I when I went
- 9:13Speaker 2: back through it, but you know, there's more of a
- 9:16Speaker 2: difference between his his floor and the ceiling, whereas Franklin
- 9:20Speaker 2: Meyer's Vance Joseph and their coaches they knew exactly what
- 9:25Speaker 2: every snap was going to look like with him, and
- 9:27Speaker 2: that's that's the tough part to replace. So uh and again,
- 9:32Speaker 2: I think that's why they've had a lot of late
- 9:35Speaker 2: day two, day three defensive linemen into the into the
- 9:38Speaker 2: building along the way.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Along those lines are they getting concerned about And this
- 9:45Speaker 1: is on both sides of the trenches, and they're really
- 9:48Speaker 1: good on both sides of the trenches, but his age
- 9:52Speaker 1: starting to become a concern with both of those groups.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Well, and this is I mean yes, short answer is yes.
- 9:59Speaker 2: You know, Glinchy has had some aches and pain. You know,
- 10:03Speaker 2: we see he limps a lot after play. I mean
- 10:06Speaker 2: it's natural. I mean it's a hard it's a hard
- 10:08Speaker 2: frigging job to do. And Garrett Balls, they've already I mean,
- 10:13Speaker 2: he's already beaten the beaten the odds. And he was
- 10:16Speaker 2: an older player when he entered the league. I think
- 10:19Speaker 2: he was twenty six when he was drafted, So his
- 10:22Speaker 2: nine years in the league aren't like everybody else's nine
- 10:26Speaker 2: years in the league because he started later on the timeline.
- 10:30Speaker 2: So yeah, you know, tackle especially, I think that's why
- 10:35Speaker 2: you always hear Sean Payton say we're always going to
- 10:38Speaker 2: address the lines in the draft, and I think that's why.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Also when you you know, the draft build model is
- 10:48Speaker 2: what they're sort of they're using these days, that the
- 10:52Speaker 2: majority of what they're doing is the draft build model.
- 10:56Speaker 2: To make that work. When you re sign all these
- 10:59Speaker 2: guys Zach Gallon, Nick Benito, Jonathan Cooper, you know, when
- 11:02Speaker 2: you resign that huge list of players, age is always
- 11:07Speaker 2: going to be a little bit of an issue because
- 11:09Speaker 2: those guys are in their second and third contract. So
- 11:13Speaker 2: your only way to come back that is to be
- 11:15Speaker 2: really good in the draft, backfilling every year. The theory
- 11:21Speaker 2: is John Franklin Myers leaves, you have a player ready
- 11:26Speaker 2: to step into that role on a rookie deal, you know,
- 11:31Speaker 2: and so that helps your cap and your and your
- 11:34Speaker 2: play on the field. But yeah, Age, when you resign
- 11:37Speaker 2: this many guys and you sort of run it back,
- 11:41Speaker 2: that is the danger You've got to wrestle with. How
- 11:44Speaker 2: much is too much? How long is too long to
- 11:48Speaker 2: keep people? And you know, that's why a lot of
- 11:51Speaker 2: gms say it's not a popular opinion, but better to
- 11:55Speaker 2: get rid of a player a year too soon than
- 11:58Speaker 2: a year too late.
- 12:00Speaker 4: All right, Jeff, you check in on any of the
- 12:01Speaker 4: flag football this weekend. I gotta be honest with you.
- 12:03Speaker 4: I forgot who's even going on.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I heard some people saying Sean Payton had had trouble
- 12:09Speaker 3: getting plays in even to that one.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I mean what, I tinkered with the idea of going
- 12:14Speaker 2: out there just really because I'm I'm not going to
- 12:18Speaker 2: the owners meetings you know where he will. That'll be
- 12:21Speaker 2: the first time he comments on anything, and you know,
- 12:24Speaker 2: off season since the combine. So uh, but yeah, no,
- 12:27Speaker 2: I didn't. I didn't see. You know, it's cool. It's
- 12:29Speaker 2: could be in the Olympics though, you know, I do
- 12:31Speaker 2: dig that. I like that aspect of it.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Yeah, hush, couldn't be stopped, man, you can You can
- 12:37Speaker 1: only hope to contain whosh apparently.
- 12:39Speaker 2: I'm just if we can't win the Golden Flag football,
- 12:43Speaker 2: there's something up.
- 12:44Speaker 3: What if Canada beats this, then well we're gonna have
- 12:45Speaker 3: a whole thing again. Is it's all gonna repeat itself
- 12:47Speaker 3: here or something like that?
- 12:49Speaker 2: And that's how you now you know how they feel
- 12:51Speaker 2: about the.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Hot That's what I'm saying.
- 12:52Speaker 1: That's football two nations?
- 12:54Speaker 4: Were you ever a good flag football player?
- 12:56Speaker 1: There?
- 12:56Speaker 3: LEGI, you're low to the ground. You got a little
- 12:58Speaker 3: wiggle to you. I guess you know, I mean we ever?
- 13:00Speaker 1: No?
- 13:00Speaker 2: I you know, back in the day I had I
- 13:02Speaker 2: had decent speed for a short, squatty guy.
- 13:06Speaker 1: He was the whip his times.
- 13:07Speaker 4: We are we talking six six second forty? What are
- 13:09Speaker 4: we doing?
- 13:11Speaker 2: I could actually run before before age crept.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I've seen he had some sweet hair back of the
- 13:16Speaker 3: day of their night, some sweet long hair.
- 13:20Speaker 4: We gotta get onto the board one day behind us.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Right, oh, he's the great Jeff leg Well, now you
- 13:28Speaker 1: know I did.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I did Tom Green's podcast the other day, and he
- 13:32Speaker 2: had stuff I had written in the Daily ALIONI So,
- 13:34Speaker 2: I mean there's a lot of stuff out there.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Did he pull the micro fish?
- 13:41Speaker 2: What did he do? Man? He had like he had
- 13:44Speaker 2: like copies of stories I wrote in nineteen eighty four. Man,
- 13:47Speaker 2: that was unbelievable.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Amazing. Man, that's great. Oh, I gotta I gotta go
- 13:52Speaker 1: back and watch this, all right, Well, Jeff like, no, no.
- 13:55Speaker 2: No, nobody, no, you guys, No, you've done it a
- 13:57Speaker 2: million times. An hour with me is like with somebody else.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Six with your tax guy.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Jeff, Oh, he did Okay, this year I got slaughtered.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Thank you, thanks for reminding me of that.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Go take a lap, all right, Jeff leg walled uh
- 14:18Speaker 1: go yes, go.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Jeff.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:22Speaker 2: And there's a lot of crankiness in the bunker right now. Yeah.
- 14:29Speaker 4: I don't wait to spend time with the over meal tomorrow.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Then top top to be salty this year, folks.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Internet issues, I mean I can't call up the video.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I mean we're having some we're having some issues in
- 14:42Speaker 2: the bunker right now. Hey.
- 14:43Speaker 1: The good news is Jeff sweet sixteen. Okay, just rolling.
- 14:49Speaker 2: I like, you know, I'd like to ask the big
- 14:52Speaker 2: the SEC and what they think of Big ten basketball. Now.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Well, look, was feeling saucy Big weekend. Hey it's a
- 15:01Speaker 1: very Midwestern flavor in the Sweet sixteen this year.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, it's the Pizza four, not the Final four.
- 15:08Speaker 1: All right, Jeff, well done as always, man, thank you
- 15:11Speaker 1: say fouls
