Latest / Bleacher Report / Dodgers Take 2-0 NLCS Lead vs. Brewers Behind Yamamoto’s Complete Game | MLB on TBS
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: They seem to be on their way behind another sterling
- 0:03Speaker 1: pitching performance from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Brewers have
- 0:07Speaker 1: not had a an at bat with a runner and
- 0:10Speaker 1: scoring position against the Los Angeles Dodgers starter. They've led
- 0:15Speaker 1: this series for eleven minutes, two pitchers, and back to
- 0:18Speaker 1: back games go eight plus innings. We haven't seen that
- 0:22Speaker 1: since twenty sixteen. It was Bumgardner and Quato. So I'm
- 0:26Speaker 1: gonna start with you, Paedro, what are we watching right now,
- 0:29Speaker 1: because I don't think I've ever seen this.
- 0:31Speaker 2: In fact, I know we've never seen it.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Well, what I'm watching here, it's a very complete Dodger
- 0:40Speaker 3: unit that's out there.
- 0:42Speaker 4: With the mission.
- 0:43Speaker 3: And if that guy was talking today in an interview,
- 0:46Speaker 3: I said, for this theme, regardless of all the all
- 0:50Speaker 3: the money and all the things that people want to
- 0:53Speaker 3: really bring out about the Dodgers, they understand what they're into.
- 0:58Speaker 4: They understand their business. They put everything aside.
- 1:02Speaker 3: You know, the stottom in Hollywood, you know the fame, everything,
- 1:07Speaker 3: you know where they're from, and they come to the
- 1:10Speaker 3: field to play that such a lot about the character
- 1:13Speaker 3: that they have in that clubhouse and how those guys
- 1:15Speaker 3: behave they don't really pay attention to anything else but
- 1:19Speaker 3: the game. Because this team, that Milwaukee Brewers is a
- 1:23Speaker 3: really good team.
- 1:24Speaker 4: So was the Philadelphia Phillies, and we have.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Seen them just take over in tight games, in any situation,
- 1:31Speaker 3: playing out standing defense. That's us a lot about how
- 1:34Speaker 3: professional those guys are in that clubhouse, and that goes
- 1:38Speaker 3: from top to bottom.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Before the game, Jimmy, you talked about the importance of
- 1:42Speaker 1: not chasing. Yamamoto pitches one hundred and eleven pitches, eighty
- 1:46Speaker 1: one strikes, and he got those guys chasing all night.
- 1:48Speaker 5: Long, definitely, and then we saw the first pitch of
- 1:51Speaker 5: the game. Their game plans to stay aggressive on a fastball.
- 1:53Speaker 5: After that, Yama Mota made the adjustment. And we always
- 1:56Speaker 5: talk about it. Pitching can neutralize. It's a good offense.
- 2:01Speaker 5: If the pitcher's throwing stripe one and he's gotten it,
- 2:03Speaker 5: not just throwing meat, you know, meat balls over the
- 2:05Speaker 5: middle of the plate, and then he can get you
- 2:07Speaker 5: to chase with his off speed, he's going to dominate.
- 2:09Speaker 5: We've seen that tonight. We're talking about a team that
- 2:11Speaker 5: doesn't chase much, but they don't put anything and play hard.
- 2:14Speaker 5: After that first in and because he was dominating stripe
- 2:17Speaker 5: one never in the same zone, pitching up, pitching down,
- 2:20Speaker 5: the big slow curveball, and that pitch right there that
- 2:22Speaker 5: split fingers devastating.
- 2:23Speaker 6: And when you get that going, I gets a team
- 2:26Speaker 6: that is struggling. They really are that. I mean, even
- 2:28Speaker 6: the last seas they scored some runs early and then
- 2:30Speaker 6: they just fall off. It happened tonight.
- 2:31Speaker 5: They scored in the first and there's nothing going on,
- 2:33Speaker 5: and we have a pitcher that can go out there,
- 2:35Speaker 5: especially after performers like Blake's now and make them look
- 2:38Speaker 5: just as I guess normal, the average Joe Stamon give me.
- 2:43Speaker 5: It's a bad combination.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Let me tell you something. I don't think they're struggling, really.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I think the Milwalkee Blu trying to do what they
- 2:50Speaker 3: normally do. What they ran into is great pitching. And
- 2:55Speaker 3: Jemmota tonight will south standing. He stopped what's electric and
- 2:59Speaker 3: that's probably why he was able to pinpoint control the
- 3:03Speaker 3: entire game with his fastball, and then when he needed
- 3:06Speaker 3: to he went to the slow breaking ball, which is
- 3:10Speaker 3: a surprise to me that he was in such a command.
- 3:14Speaker 3: And also the wipeout split that we saw strike out
- 3:17Speaker 3: the last hitter. I think they have been pitched so
- 3:20Speaker 3: well that it makes them look like they're struggling, But
- 3:23Speaker 3: I don't think they are. They just were overmatched by
- 3:27Speaker 3: Blake Snail and Jemmoto.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And if we were coming in today's game and say
- 3:31Speaker 1: that the Dodgers won through three hitters were two for
- 3:33Speaker 1: thirteen with four k's Paralta did his thing, but the
- 3:37Speaker 1: bats the bottom of the lineup.
- 3:39Speaker 2: You mentioned it to ta Oscar, boy, were they alive?
- 3:41Speaker 7: It's amazing that we have these MVPs at the top
- 3:44Speaker 7: of the lineup that still haven't.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Really got it going.
- 3:46Speaker 7: They've got a couple of hits here, a couple hits there,
- 3:49Speaker 7: But even though it'shiny single to score run there, you
- 3:51Speaker 7: can see the excitement on his face because they're trying
- 3:54Speaker 7: to go ahead and know the things that they can deliver.
- 3:56Speaker 2: But as ta Oscar.
- 3:57Speaker 6: Mentioned, their lineup is so deep.
- 4:00Speaker 7: And even after you get through one through three half
- 4:02Speaker 7: and face them, you can't take a breath because the
- 4:05Speaker 7: rest of the lineup can hurt you.
- 4:06Speaker 6: The Hernandez brothers can get you.
- 4:08Speaker 7: Even pies at the bottom getting the buntdown, which was
- 4:11Speaker 7: huge in this time of the game at this time
- 4:14Speaker 7: of the year, executing on all different areas. Otani with
- 4:17Speaker 7: the stolen base, a sacrifice Bun homers from Taaskar, homers
- 4:21Speaker 7: from Max Munsei, name a guy. Everyone in this lineup
- 4:25Speaker 7: can hurt you at any time, and they've been doing that.
- 4:28Speaker 1: At bats with runners in scoring position. In this series,
- 4:32Speaker 1: Dodgers twenty one, Brewers won. That's why the Dodgers have
- 4:38Speaker 1: now won seventeen of their last twenty one postseason games.
- 4:43Speaker 1: The question is can they do it at home. We're
- 4:45Speaker 1: gonna find out. We already know it's gonna be glass
- 4:48Speaker 1: now on the mount for the Dodgers. They're gonna wait
- 4:51Speaker 1: until probably an hour before the game.
- 4:53Speaker 2: To give us the starter.
- 4:54Speaker 1: For the Brewers, snelling Amamoto looking like a go shack
- 4:58Speaker 1: at Kobe right now. I have to worry about the
- 5:00Speaker 1: Dodgers' bullpack if they never get into the game.
- 5:04Speaker 2: That's smart.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Yeah, though, you'll remember two.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Aces on the mound, Freddy Peralta and Yamamoto.
- 5:10Speaker 2: What a performance it was from him.
- 5:12Speaker 1: We start off first pitch of the game from Yamamoto,
- 5:16Speaker 1: Dean Don Johnson, Ding Dong.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Jackson, Churio. This place was going nuts. You put in
- 5:23Speaker 2: the bass for a better start than that. Play right there?
- 5:26Speaker 4: Oh you saying, ding dong Jackie ding donk.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Jackson, cheerio top second now, one out and ti Oscar
- 5:33Speaker 1: Hernandez answers back with a towering dean dog Jackson his
- 5:38Speaker 1: fourth home run of the postseason.
- 5:41Speaker 2: And then how about this.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Andy Pajas came into tonight one hit in twenty seven
- 5:46Speaker 1: at bats, and this one was enormous.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Jimmy, I've said it before, only takes one to swing
- 5:51Speaker 5: and Charlie said this all the time.
- 5:53Speaker 6: Jimmy, it's not about how many you get swims on man.
- 5:55Speaker 6: You get that count and that will count.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Right there.
- 5:57Speaker 6: That put the Dodgers in the head and they did
- 5:58Speaker 6: not look back.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Gave him the lead, moved out top six, two outs,
- 6:02Speaker 1: two strikes. Matt Munksey on a three to two count
- 6:05Speaker 1: to center field. We saw this one turn into a
- 6:08Speaker 1: double play last night. It was about a foot taller
- 6:11Speaker 1: and that also made Munsey the Dodgers all time postseason
- 6:15Speaker 1: home run leader with fourteen.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Passing Justin and Corey c He's got to stay away
- 6:21Speaker 2: from center field.
- 6:21Speaker 7: The auto's bottle a little too close, but hey, once
- 6:24Speaker 7: you get it over it still counts.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Ashby now pitching show.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Hey, Otani gets that long lost single that we've been waiting.
- 6:30Speaker 2: For, another run for keyk Hernandez.
- 6:33Speaker 1: It was for one Dodgers and of course the story
- 6:36Speaker 1: Padro Yamamoto his shortest stitt in the Majors against the
- 6:40Speaker 1: Brewers this year in July and now his first complete
- 6:44Speaker 1: game in the postseason against the foot But you know what,
- 6:46Speaker 1: with that.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Kind of stuff that you throw there, I'm not surprising
- 6:50Speaker 3: when from the shutters through the longest gongrass to him
- 6:54Speaker 3: and that was diffent outstanding out.
- 6:56Speaker 4: In Wow, in Breson.
- 6:58Speaker 3: We have been throwing with the Dodgers pitching continuous.
- 7:03Speaker 4: I'm sorry to say it.
- 7:04Speaker 3: I have a little faith in the Brewers, but I
- 7:07Speaker 3: don't think it's gonna last too long. They continue to
- 7:09Speaker 3: pitch the way they have.
- 7:10Speaker 2: They still have show. Hey, they still have glast.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Now let's hear some post game talk from this incredible
- 7:16Speaker 1: performance from me Imamoto.
- 7:20Speaker 8: Both great. You know, both those pitchers were as dominant
- 7:24Speaker 8: as two pitchers have been. You know, we chased way
- 7:28Speaker 8: more than then We've chased all year. We've been the
- 7:31Speaker 8: best in baseball at not chasing. Uh, these pictures brought
- 7:34Speaker 8: out the worse than us. Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 8: If I would have told you that the Dodgers are
- 7:43Speaker 8: going to score seven runs in two games and what
- 7:45Speaker 8: was the outcome in the first two games, I'd say
- 7:47Speaker 8: there's a chance we won one.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Of them, for sure. You know, our pitching is beat up,
- 7:53Speaker 2: you know that.
- 7:54Speaker 8: I mean, it was an emotional series with the Cubs,
- 7:56Speaker 8: and then our pitching has been so we weren't as sharp.
- 7:59Speaker 8: But I thought Freddie pitch well, and you know, I
- 8:05Speaker 8: thought Ashby came in and did a great job. Gasser
- 8:08Speaker 8: came in and did a great job. Anderson came in
- 8:09Speaker 8: and did a great job. So we had some we
- 8:12Speaker 8: had some good performances. But offensively, you've got to grind
- 8:16Speaker 8: out at bats and that's that's what been our forte.
- 8:18Speaker 8: The ball strike has been really at the core of
- 8:21Speaker 8: our offensive success, and sometimes great pitching brings out the
- 8:26Speaker 8: worst in you.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Twenty eight times in the postseason the road team has
- 8:31Speaker 1: won the first two games in a best of seven series.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Twenty five times that team has gone on to win,
- 8:36Speaker 1: so just under ninety percent. Jimmy, what is it going
- 8:39Speaker 1: to take for the Brewers' bats to come alive? Other
- 8:42Speaker 1: than they don't have to face Snell and Yamamoto for
- 8:44Speaker 1: the next two matchup.
- 8:45Speaker 6: Well, they got a glass now and Otani.
- 8:47Speaker 5: I don't think there's any hope of them coming a live,
- 8:50Speaker 5: but they can find a way to add pressure. Having
- 8:52Speaker 5: good at bets, as mervh said, they've chased a lot,
- 8:55Speaker 5: and great pitching will do that for you because you're
- 8:57Speaker 5: trying to get something going with someone's trying to step
- 8:59Speaker 5: up and get that big swing, which we saw early,
- 9:01Speaker 5: but then nothing. They fell flat because you'm will motivate
- 9:03Speaker 5: the adjustment. But if you can keep pressure on a pitcher,
- 9:06Speaker 5: get them in a stretch, get runners in the scoring position,
- 9:09Speaker 5: eventually somebody will start to cross the play. But if
- 9:11Speaker 5: you're not even getting yourself in position and the only
- 9:13Speaker 5: thing you're doing is driving ball out the yard against
- 9:15Speaker 5: this pitching staff, it's going to be a long night.
- 9:18Speaker 6: And it's been tough.
- 9:19Speaker 5: You know.
- 9:19Speaker 6: He had less than twenty pitches from the stretch. We're
- 9:22Speaker 6: trying to put pressure on.
- 9:23Speaker 7: They're not drawing the walks, they're not getting along at bats.
- 9:26Speaker 7: He had less than one hundred pitches going into the
- 9:28Speaker 7: ninth inning, But that's credit to the Dodgers' pitching staff
- 9:32Speaker 7: Doc Roberts. I talked to him when I got a
- 9:34Speaker 7: chance to cover that Philly series, and he mentioned, we're
- 9:36Speaker 7: set up as a traditional playoff team than we've ever
- 9:40Speaker 7: been before.
- 9:40Speaker 6: The year before, it was all the bullpenchs.
- 9:43Speaker 7: Now they actually have starters that can come out there
- 9:46Speaker 7: and be called upon, and they're delivering to have truly
- 9:49Speaker 7: four starters ready to roll. They're unlike any other team
- 9:52Speaker 7: in the postseason, and they're relying on them and they're
- 9:54Speaker 7: all coming up big.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Everyone's waiting to announce their starting pitching an hour before
- 9:58Speaker 1: the game. Meanwhile, Roberts is, here's what we got for
- 10:01Speaker 1: the week, So don't ask me anymore.
- 10:02Speaker 2: But I don't know what.
- 10:04Speaker 1: This has been your brew crew all year, and they've
- 10:06Speaker 1: been a phenomenal to watch. These fans have been great.
- 10:08Speaker 1: But it's looking like too tall of a mountain of
- 10:11Speaker 1: climb now.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Well at this point, yes, I'm hoping that they get
- 10:15Speaker 3: an opportunity to find one of those starters, maybe on
- 10:18Speaker 3: a little bit weaker day than they had the last
- 10:21Speaker 3: two days. And plus you have to credit the Dodgers.
- 10:25Speaker 3: We're playing great defensive games. They have cam clutch when
- 10:31Speaker 3: they need to, they have hit enough homers to actually
- 10:36Speaker 3: make it past the Milwaukee Brewers. The Milwaukee Brewers, I
- 10:39Speaker 3: think did not execute as much as they wanted to.
- 10:43Speaker 3: But with that kind of pitching, I mean, all you
- 10:46Speaker 3: have to do is just say, like I once said,
- 10:49Speaker 3: tip your.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Hat and let them go.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Because I'm not gonna say other things, but tip your
- 10:54Speaker 3: hat and let them go. Because the Dodgers are playing
- 10:56Speaker 3: almost perfect, perfect baseball and that's very mutual at this
- 11:00Speaker 3: time of the year.
- 11:02Speaker 6: Another thing that happens.
- 11:04Speaker 5: Another thing that happens is and Pedro knows us and
- 11:07Speaker 5: I've seen it when our pitchers got on the roll.
- 11:09Speaker 5: You see that guy through the night before, Oh, I
- 11:11Speaker 5: have to match that. It's it's it's a competition. They
- 11:14Speaker 5: want to look at each other like, yeah, you did it,
- 11:15Speaker 5: I did it too, And it goes on and on
- 11:18Speaker 5: and on and right now, these guys are at the
- 11:19Speaker 5: top of their game.
- 11:20Speaker 6: It's not like, well, I've been struggling. I'm hoping to
- 11:22Speaker 6: coming back that up.
- 11:22Speaker 5: It's like, no, as good as you were, I want
- 11:25Speaker 5: to go out there and be as just as dominant.
- 11:26Speaker 7: And they've done that in back to back nights and
- 11:28Speaker 7: speaking of being as good as you were, could it be?
- 11:30Speaker 7: And I'm gonna bring it to both of y'all. The
- 11:32Speaker 7: Dodgers lost six games out of the six they played
- 11:35Speaker 7: to the Brewers. Y'all, Momoto got beat up bad. Here
- 11:38Speaker 7: are they looking at it? Going all right, y'all got me?
- 11:40Speaker 7: Then I'm gonna try to come back and get you.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Now, well, I'm gonna I'm gonna answer. First. You heard
- 11:46Speaker 4: the interview for Blake Snail.
- 11:49Speaker 3: He says, hey, they're not regular Joe's They beat us
- 11:54Speaker 3: in the in the in the sixth regular season games.
- 11:56Speaker 3: So they were well aware that that they had their
- 12:00Speaker 3: number during the regular season. But once again, you take
- 12:06Speaker 3: you know, the regular season, throw it out of the back,
- 12:09Speaker 3: and you start brand new games in the postseason. So
- 12:12Speaker 3: this is what the Dodgers came to do. They're not
- 12:15Speaker 3: taking them for granted or any lightly. They're coming after them.
- 12:20Speaker 6: And going with that.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Sometimes you take a team too lightly, like you know
- 12:24Speaker 5: where the Dodgers at of Brewers. You come to a
- 12:25Speaker 5: city which you call those sleeper cities. He come out
- 12:28Speaker 5: here and get your butt handed to you. You go
- 12:30Speaker 5: back next time serious, and they came out serious this series.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Now we did see this twenty fifteen Cubs Mets. Cubs
- 12:36Speaker 1: swept the season series and the regular season, Mets swept
- 12:39Speaker 1: them in the NLCS, and you might say, hey, at
- 12:41Speaker 1: least it's no Snell and Yamamoto. We did see Glass now,
- 12:45Speaker 1: Game four against the Phillies, six scoreless, two hits. They
- 12:49Speaker 1: just keep coming, and we're not even talking about sho
- 12:52Speaker 1: hel Tony
