Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Here we are at the Lovable Reunion Podcast interviewing our coach.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Joe Madams, coach, Anthony's coach, Anthony's plural two.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Time World Series champion one as a manager in the
- 0:20Speaker 1: three World Series, second most winning percentage of Cub's history
- 0:25Speaker 1: behind Frank Chance who ROSSI played for. And I say, Joe,
- 0:33Speaker 1: when you surprised everyone in twenty fifteen with signing with us,
- 0:39Speaker 1: it was the first block of building a championship team
- 0:42Speaker 1: and you literally under your leadership turned the Lovable Loser
- 0:47Speaker 1: franchise into expected World Series contenders. So thank you before
- 0:52Speaker 1: we get started.
- 0:53Speaker 2: But let's give it up for Joe mad Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 2: there were no players there, are you kidding me? Thank
- 0:59Speaker 2: you Anthony's and that was I remember that so well,
- 1:03Speaker 2: you know, just getting there in the first place. I
- 1:04Speaker 2: really didn't have any CUB tradition built into me. I
- 1:07Speaker 2: was an American leaguer, you know. I came from the Rays,
- 1:09Speaker 2: and Jed and THEO showed up down in your neck
- 1:13Speaker 2: of the woods down here Tallahassee and Navar Beach, and
- 1:17Speaker 2: I was in my RV at Navar Beach and they
- 1:18Speaker 2: come down there and they sit down, we sit down
- 1:21Speaker 2: in the back of my behind my RV on this
- 1:23Speaker 2: little little beach back there, and just start talking philosophically. Right,
- 1:27Speaker 2: and when you.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Had some history with them, I did with interviewing in Boston, Right,
- 1:32Speaker 3: That was many years before.
- 1:33Speaker 2: That was two thousand and four when Tito got the job,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and I really wasn't ready for that job at that time.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I even told them afterwards, you guys made the right choice.
- 1:41Speaker 2: It was a much better choice for me than me
- 1:43Speaker 2: at that particular juncture. But I was the best choice
- 1:46Speaker 2: at that particular juncture. I thought my time with the
- 1:49Speaker 2: Rays really helped me with the planning component of that.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I knew what I wanted. You know, you arrive at
- 1:56Speaker 2: a point in your life where you know what you know.
- 1:58Speaker 2: That sounds dumb, but some people really don't know what
- 2:02Speaker 2: they know. They they're regurgitators. They're always repeating things that
- 2:04Speaker 2: they've heard from somebody else. But by the time I
- 2:06Speaker 2: get to the Cubbies, and even after, I mean even
- 2:09Speaker 2: with the Rays, I knew, I really felt I knew
- 2:12Speaker 2: what it would take to put us into that position.
- 2:14Speaker 2: And of course you have to have great players. Don't
- 2:16Speaker 2: be deceived. I mean, managers are good because the players
- 2:19Speaker 2: are good, and if you have a really good pitching staff,
- 2:21Speaker 2: for even better. And if you have a real closer,
- 2:22Speaker 2: you could be the best manager there is. All that
- 2:24Speaker 2: stuff is part of the gig. But you guys are fabulous.
- 2:29Speaker 2: It was so interesting because the Rays are great. I
- 2:33Speaker 2: love Tampa Bay and we're here right now. But the
- 2:36Speaker 2: tradition of the Cubs walking into Wrigley Field every day.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I would walk in and look up and say thank you,
- 2:42Speaker 2: because I never I never experienced that. Anaheim was great
- 2:45Speaker 2: for a while, you know, I was, but I was
- 2:46Speaker 2: not a manager. And the Rays played at the Troup,
- 2:49Speaker 2: which is cool. But Wrigley Field, I think for me
- 2:52Speaker 2: is the best professional venue in all of sports. I
- 2:55Speaker 2: will go to Europe, all these soccer stadiums, whatever, and
- 2:58Speaker 2: I put Wriggly up against all of them, because on
- 3:00Speaker 2: a daily basis, those people of that ballpark you could play.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I'll shut up in a second, but remember we played
- 3:07Speaker 2: the Indians on a Monday and a makeup game. I
- 3:10Speaker 2: think it was twenty sixteen, makeup Monday at one o'clock
- 3:13Speaker 2: in the afternoon. I think it was Lester versus Clover. Clover.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Forty thousand people insane. It doesn't happen so anyway. Long answer,
- 3:22Speaker 2: but there's so much adrenaline and excitement in that ballpark
- 3:27Speaker 2: every frigging day. And then we have a combination. Now,
- 3:31Speaker 2: these guys are great players, but think of the charisma
- 3:33Speaker 2: of our group. And it started in fifteen, but it
- 3:35Speaker 2: really built into sixteen. But charismatically, you guys are so
- 3:40Speaker 2: cool to be with on a daily basis. And I
- 3:42Speaker 2: was with a bunch of men. I wasn't with a
- 3:43Speaker 2: bunch of kids, you know, And that's really was exciting
- 3:45Speaker 2: to me too. So there's a lot of contributing factors
- 3:48Speaker 2: to that. I was just I was fortunate and happy
- 3:50Speaker 2: to be there because I felt really good about that group. Well,
- 3:53Speaker 2: we mimicked the cool manager.
- 3:56Speaker 3: You are so outside the box and yeah, shaving the
- 3:59Speaker 3: head and spring training, but the shot to the press conference,
- 4:02Speaker 3: and I.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Remember that press conference like you do really well. Rossie
- 4:06Speaker 1: and I had uh we were doing an ESPN car
- 4:09Speaker 1: wash for the playoffs and fourteen going into fifteen. I
- 4:12Speaker 1: remember I remember talking to about our agents. We had
- 4:14Speaker 1: the same agents, and I was like, rossi's what we
- 4:17Speaker 1: need as a young team. And then you came over
- 4:20Speaker 1: and it was like, oh my god, and then we
- 4:21Speaker 1: signed Lester and Rossa. At your press conference, it was,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you know, I think you said, you said something along
- 4:26Speaker 1: the lines unless you can't be here unless we aligned
- 4:29Speaker 1: perfectly with the front office, right, And for a number
- 4:33Speaker 1: of years we did. You aligned perfectly at the front office.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And obviously later on the years, you know, things changed.
- 4:39Speaker 3: A little bit, risk up hitting and offense.
- 4:42Speaker 1: That was that was taxes and me hitting, and those
- 4:45Speaker 1: years were very consistent.
- 4:46Speaker 3: I got to get jab at you every once in a.
- 4:48Speaker 1: While, but there's just I respected you so much from
- 4:51Speaker 1: Afar as a young player. I was twenty one when
- 4:54Speaker 1: I got called up. I was in the big leagues
- 4:55Speaker 1: for four years before you signed, and I remember with
- 4:58Speaker 1: the rays you did, I think it was like a
- 5:02Speaker 1: with stock trip out with that. We did all the
- 5:05Speaker 1: things you did, and I'm like, this is what we
- 5:07Speaker 1: need because I'm like, as a rookie, like you're supposed
- 5:10Speaker 1: to get to the field at twelve o'clock for seven
- 5:12Speaker 1: o'clock game, Like why don't we.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Get yourself early? It's nuts?
- 5:15Speaker 1: And everything you did from Afar I aligned with. So
- 5:17Speaker 1: when we signed you, I was literally like a kid.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I'm still like a kid every time around.
- 5:21Speaker 2: You, so I appreciate it.
- 5:22Speaker 3: What did you try to implement coming in to Chicago?
- 5:25Speaker 3: Like what was you get a new job and trying
- 5:27Speaker 3: to learn everything, and what did you feel like when
- 5:31Speaker 3: you first got there. I really want to change this,
- 5:33Speaker 3: or you're really good about being yourself, But what what
- 5:37Speaker 3: kind of a new environment that's that's not easy?
- 5:39Speaker 2: I learned something in nineteen eighty five for something like
- 5:44Speaker 2: that with Jean Mark that goes back a bit. I
- 5:48Speaker 2: was running the instructional League in Arizona. I was the
- 5:52Speaker 2: field coordinator and a manager. I wasn't manager, but I
- 5:55Speaker 2: was leading that destruction league group. Gene comes in a time.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I'm out in the cage. I'm just throwing my BP,
- 5:59Speaker 2: but I'm I'm running the whole thing. And Gene walks
- 6:01Speaker 2: up to me and he says, in between he gave
- 6:04Speaker 2: me one of these, come over and speak with him.
- 6:06Speaker 2: You've created a great environment around here. And he had
- 6:10Speaker 2: his like polyester's on his here is perfect, smoking his cigarette.
- 6:14Speaker 2: He's loved to play golf, bridge, smoke a little bourbon.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Then he just takes off like a puff, you know,
- 6:18Speaker 2: he just disappears. And I thought to myself, what the
- 6:21Speaker 2: hell is he talking about? I had no idea what
- 6:22Speaker 2: he's talking about. And I think when you do things organically,
- 6:26Speaker 2: you don't know what you're doing sometimes, which is a
- 6:28Speaker 2: good thing. It's like the zone of being a coach
- 6:30Speaker 2: or a manager. But but I went home that night
- 6:32Speaker 2: and I thought, what hell was he talking about? So
- 6:34Speaker 2: I sat around and actually took no I wrote notes
- 6:36Speaker 2: by my At that time, I was a big note taker.
- 6:39Speaker 2: We built relationships, and when conversations and not just talking
- 6:45Speaker 2: to somebody, really listening to somebody, there's a different We
- 6:47Speaker 2: were talking about that before we started doing this, to
- 6:50Speaker 2: really listen to somebody. People will have a conversation kind
- 6:53Speaker 2: of but we really listened to one another, and a
- 6:55Speaker 2: lot of times the answer is no. But that's that
- 6:58Speaker 2: was my first takeaway. And then what happen because of that?
- 7:01Speaker 2: We trusted each other. I mean, and I know everybody
- 7:05Speaker 2: wants more ground balls, choreographed early work, all kinds of
- 7:09Speaker 2: dead information, booklets on the bench. Everybody wants. That's the
- 7:13Speaker 2: You don't start there. You start by relationship building, listening
- 7:16Speaker 2: to people. Then you build trust, and then you can
- 7:18Speaker 2: exchange ideas. In other words, like David and I have
- 7:22Speaker 2: different perspective or thoughts on something. So you give me yours,
- 7:26Speaker 2: I give you mine. And because we built trust and
- 7:29Speaker 2: we have a relationship, it's not going to be like, oh,
- 7:33Speaker 2: I'm not gonna listen to Joe. I'm just gonna he's
- 7:35Speaker 2: not listening to me right now. It's my way. I'm
- 7:37Speaker 2: not going to support them whatsoever. So you get this pushback.
- 7:41Speaker 2: So but if you establish those first two things, then
- 7:44Speaker 2: we can exchange ideas and I can disagree with you
- 7:47Speaker 2: and we could listen because that leads to constructive criticism.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Think about it. Think about it. I mean my best coaches,
- 7:53Speaker 2: the guys are really loved, the guys that told me
- 7:56Speaker 2: when I was wrong. Yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Yeah, well you said honestly without conpassion, people's cruelty's I
- 8:02Speaker 1: took that with me as soon as I heard you
- 8:04Speaker 1: say that.
- 8:05Speaker 2: You said it early, when you first saw with us.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It was game changing for me as a leader, especially
- 8:10Speaker 1: as a young leader at the time. Was I can't
- 8:13Speaker 1: tell anyone what to do. They don't trust me as
- 8:16Speaker 1: a as a person. First, they need to know I
- 8:18Speaker 1: had their best interest, Because you go and tell someone
- 8:20Speaker 1: if any coach you have coaches all the time you come, hey,
- 8:23Speaker 1: you should do this, and I'm like, hold on, I
- 8:24Speaker 1: don't even know you. My name is Anthony. Nice to
- 8:26Speaker 1: meet you.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Perfect, Let's have a beer. Perfect, Perfect, And.
- 8:29Speaker 1: You instill that and you come over and you create
- 8:33Speaker 1: the greatest culture of a generation. Really, you were such
- 8:37Speaker 1: a pioneer and we were the first team to have
- 8:39Speaker 1: music at spring training. Every team, all thirty teams now
- 8:42Speaker 1: have music. Is everywhere, all the skits, right. You were
- 8:46Speaker 1: pioneer with analytics that was taboo back in the day,
- 8:51Speaker 1: and then you transitioned and became more of the see
- 8:55Speaker 1: and feel and analytical guy.
- 8:57Speaker 2: So it's like it's a combination of everything.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But the journey of Joe in your what fifty years,
- 9:02Speaker 1: sixty years, fifty I.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Don't even know. I started in as a coach in
- 9:06Speaker 2: nineteen eighty one, as a player in seventy six. But
- 9:09Speaker 2: I appreciate that because that's that's exactly how I feel
- 9:12Speaker 2: about it. It's a morphing of things. It's not just
- 9:15Speaker 2: data and analytics, it's also feel and experience and intuition.
- 9:19Speaker 2: I think you know you guys know you know Todd Green,
- 9:22Speaker 2: don't you? Yeah? Green? Do you know Todd Green? At all.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Green is one of my players with the Angels.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Scott Now we were to both catchers and trip away
- 9:29Speaker 3: our daughters of beautiful Man.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Beautiful man.
- 9:30Speaker 3: That's how I went to the hockey mass.
- 9:32Speaker 2: Okay, he kept getting his built as a bell rung
- 9:35Speaker 2: with that, I said, stop doing that anyway. So Greene
- 9:38Speaker 2: brought to my attention it's not old school, it's not
- 9:40Speaker 2: new school. It's being in school. You know. I think
- 9:43Speaker 2: we you know. It is great line because I don't
- 9:46Speaker 2: want to argue with you about what I learned from
- 9:49Speaker 2: Bob Clear in nineteen seventy nine as a coach, or
- 9:52Speaker 2: what I learned from Andrew Freeman in two thousand and
- 9:54Speaker 2: six or seven as a young manager with the Tampa
- 9:56Speaker 2: Bay Race or the Devil Rays at that time. That's
- 9:58Speaker 2: not the point, because I all of that is important
- 10:01Speaker 2: to me. When you fit. Extremism in any shape or
- 10:04Speaker 2: forming in our politics in today's world is awful. I'm
- 10:07Speaker 2: not into extremes. I think there's a balance to be
- 10:10Speaker 2: sawed and control and felt with everything. So I was
- 10:15Speaker 2: at the forefront of the data analytics in the early
- 10:18Speaker 2: two thousands. It was all my own stuff. Nobody told
- 10:21Speaker 2: me how to do this. But I got Bob Clear,
- 10:24Speaker 2: I got Gene Mack, I got Whitey Herzog, I got
- 10:29Speaker 2: Cookie Rojas, I got Marcel Ash I could go on
- 10:31Speaker 2: down seeah, I got don Zim, I got all these dudes,
- 10:34Speaker 2: come on. I got their stuff, and then I got
- 10:37Speaker 2: the newer stuff that started about two thousand and five
- 10:39Speaker 2: six seven with the Devil rays. And why would I
- 10:43Speaker 2: not want to use both sides of this thing? Why
- 10:45Speaker 2: would you want to rely heavily on one or the other.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Why can't you understand it's so how important it is
- 10:50Speaker 2: to morph these things together to really come to being
- 10:53Speaker 2: in school, Greeny was brilliant when he told that to me.
- 10:55Speaker 2: So that's where that's where we lie today. It's too
- 10:59Speaker 2: heavy handed eye leave one side being the more analytical,
- 11:02Speaker 2: data driven, controlling side, as opposed to the empowerment side,
- 11:06Speaker 2: which is the intuition, the feel, the experience side. For me,
- 11:10Speaker 2: if you really want to win championships on a regular basis,
- 11:13Speaker 2: learn how to bring them both together. Because I want
- 11:16Speaker 2: if I ever got to do this again, I want
- 11:18Speaker 2: the best analytical staff money can buy, totally but information absolutely.
- 11:22Speaker 2: But then I want the best tobacco spitting honest telling
- 11:28Speaker 2: experienced guys that hissed you off, and they tell you
- 11:30Speaker 2: the truth. Guys.
- 11:31Speaker 3: You told me that when I called you and I
- 11:33Speaker 3: got the managerial job, and we talked for like an hour,
- 11:36Speaker 3: and you told me, don't take for granted and forget
- 11:40Speaker 3: your experience, because that's going to guide you. And that's
- 11:42Speaker 3: really gonna like truy. You know, everybody says, you know,
- 11:44Speaker 3: we don't want to listen to our gut, but your
- 11:46Speaker 3: gut is your experience talking to you and the things
- 11:49Speaker 3: that you've been through and the dog out as a player, Like,
- 11:51Speaker 3: don't forget those as a manager because they they carry
- 11:53Speaker 3: a ton of weight and a ton of value.
- 11:54Speaker 2: I'm going to make a recommendation right now. I've read
- 11:56Speaker 2: a book recently. I'm reading it right now. It's called
- 11:58Speaker 2: You Already Know the Ladies professor from Northeastern University, Laura Loong.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I found somebody sent me like a little excerpt of
- 12:06Speaker 2: her work, so I got in touch with her. I
- 12:08Speaker 2: called her on the phone. Brilliant. This lady is a
- 12:11Speaker 2: young lady. She teaches at Northeastern and the whole book
- 12:14Speaker 2: is about experience, intuition, gout, feeling. Wow. Yeah, but she
- 12:18Speaker 2: really it's academic academia, but she explains it in such
- 12:22Speaker 2: a wonderful way. It's that it's very identifiable. And that's
- 12:25Speaker 2: the part part of the world today that I think
- 12:27Speaker 2: we're getting away from, Like AI is going to take
- 12:30Speaker 2: even further away from that, You're going to realize more.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Why do we want machines to tell us how to
- 12:35Speaker 2: live in, what to be, and how to do things.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Why even in a sport, why do you want to
- 12:39Speaker 2: rely on a machine, data, information, math, whatever you want
- 12:43Speaker 2: to call it. Why why is it so important to
- 12:45Speaker 2: do that? And why do you think I would say,
- 12:47Speaker 2: give me my give you the best coaching staff that
- 12:50Speaker 2: I could put together, and I'll battle your AI all
- 12:53Speaker 2: day long. And I mean there's no staff exactly, there's
- 12:58Speaker 2: no there's no definitives. And why you think just because
- 13:02Speaker 2: this data and information, this AI stuff. I'm here to
- 13:05Speaker 2: tell you if I get like the right group of
- 13:07Speaker 2: coaches together and I still want to utilize that, I
- 13:09Speaker 2: still want my information and you can utilize go ahead
- 13:12Speaker 2: and buy some good coaches yourself, But just give me
- 13:14Speaker 2: that opportunity. We're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna bust your balls, right,
- 13:17Speaker 2: down to the very end under those circumstances, and that's
- 13:20Speaker 2: what's missing, and it's the human element. God, Dan is
- 13:23Speaker 2: the human You're just talking about the culture and everything
- 13:25Speaker 2: else we had. You're not going to get that from
- 13:27Speaker 2: a from a computer. Now.
- 13:28Speaker 3: Well, I think that's what we I wanted to get
- 13:30Speaker 3: into because we feel like our coaches on that twenty
- 13:33Speaker 3: sixteen team were game changers, like can you walk through?
- 13:37Speaker 3: Just like the guys Bussy, Borsy Hider Jones and oz Bo,
- 13:43Speaker 3: Davey Martinez, I mean like and.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Ski and Ski.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Yes, guys that were in the trenches every day. And
- 13:49Speaker 1: it's like you were so good, Joe at distracting the media,
- 13:53Speaker 1: distracting the players from the media that I think guys
- 13:55Speaker 1: don't need to understand to where the manager has to
- 13:59Speaker 1: do so many obligations and then Davy would just come
- 14:03Speaker 1: in and that I had a phrase, prisoners run the asylum, right,
- 14:07Speaker 1: they let you guys, let us run the asylum. Of
- 14:10Speaker 1: course with structure everything, so often the wardens had to
- 14:12Speaker 1: step in and get us in line. But if there
- 14:15Speaker 1: was fires that be put out, either come and talk
- 14:18Speaker 1: to you or the easiest manager I've ever was able
- 14:20Speaker 1: to talk about or David would come and be, hey,
- 14:22Speaker 1: this is why we're doing this, or now we're not
- 14:24Speaker 1: doing that, and.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Like that was it? You love the Uncle? Sam posted right,
- 14:30Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's one of the paintings we did. And
- 14:32Speaker 2: you know the main theme of that is the more
- 14:34Speaker 2: freedom given, the greater respect and discipline return totally. If
- 14:37Speaker 2: you're as a professional. I'm not going to do that
- 14:39Speaker 2: with fifth graders. Okay, I'm not gonna let a bunch
- 14:42Speaker 2: of fifth graders run the asylum. But if you're a professional,
- 14:46Speaker 2: you know, twenty plus year old, old enough to drink,
- 14:49Speaker 2: old enough to vote, old enough to die in a war, right,
- 14:52Speaker 2: and I'm going to tell you everything how to act
- 14:56Speaker 2: on a daily basis. No, the more freedom I give you,
- 14:59Speaker 2: the greater respect and to get coming back towards me,
- 15:01Speaker 2: and more freedom I give you, the more you can
- 15:03Speaker 2: actually listen to me totally, at least at least way,
- 15:07Speaker 2: at least way what I have to say, sure, right,
- 15:09Speaker 2: because I never I never. I could almost use the
- 15:12Speaker 2: word never created like an edict. You got to do this,
- 15:16Speaker 2: We got to do that. The closest I came to that.
- 15:19Speaker 2: You don't remember this in twenty fifteen and we did
- 15:22Speaker 2: cut off some relays. I hated it and I stopped everything.
- 15:26Speaker 2: I remember Starlin Castro, I remember all the dudes. I
- 15:30Speaker 2: remember a hobby just going through the motions. We started
- 15:32Speaker 2: doing relay catches. That's right. You realize we didn't screw
- 15:35Speaker 2: up a freak.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Cat because we can't take it too serious.
- 15:42Speaker 2: No know how to do the fun of that exactly.
- 15:44Speaker 1: You had three rules in twenty fifteen, do simple better
- 15:47Speaker 1: dress right, respect ninety and our dress code.
- 15:51Speaker 2: If you think you that's right you.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Said you said in that speech is spring trains, like
- 15:56Speaker 3: whoever made some putting a collar on a shirt?
- 15:59Speaker 2: That's the right, one is right?
- 16:01Speaker 1: And that that alone, to a young group that's still
- 16:04Speaker 1: learned how to win in fifteen, was like, this is amazing.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Don't you got pissed off? But we didn't play hard right,
- 16:09Speaker 1: you got seldomly did guys know you got pissed off?
- 16:13Speaker 1: But as we got to know you a little, we
- 16:14Speaker 1: could tell ye and if there was mental errors, hate
- 16:17Speaker 1: mental air, and that's what we knew. So it's like,
- 16:20Speaker 1: don't don't fuck up, don't be that person, and we
- 16:24Speaker 1: can literally.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Do whatever you wanted to.
- 16:26Speaker 3: And it was and the spring training.
- 16:27Speaker 1: You Sandon brothers.
- 16:29Speaker 3: It was a bandon brothers, and you gave us that freedom.
- 16:31Speaker 3: And I think that's how a team. A team needs
- 16:33Speaker 3: to be led.
- 16:34Speaker 2: By the players. Right.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Absolutely, But you would say in your speech and spring training,
- 16:38Speaker 3: you would say, you guys all know wrong from right.
- 16:41Speaker 3: She was right, it's correct, she was right, it's not
- 16:43Speaker 3: it's not hard.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I've been using that since like nineteen whatever, when I
- 16:46Speaker 2: managed the Idaho Falls Angels and the Salem Angels in
- 16:50Speaker 2: nineteen eighty one eighty twenty three. That would be part
- 16:53Speaker 2: of what I talked to these guys about. You know
- 16:54Speaker 2: what's right and wrong. I don't have to stand up
- 16:56Speaker 2: here and tell you with right and why. You grew
- 16:58Speaker 2: up in the family. But father, the mother, you had teachers,
- 17:01Speaker 2: you had coaches. You know what's right and wrong. But
- 17:03Speaker 2: like write it down on a piece of paper. Choose right.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Just choose right every time we're not that's right. We're
- 17:09Speaker 2: not gonna have any issues because I'm not going to
- 17:12Speaker 2: stand here and just lord over you and be your father.
- 17:14Speaker 2: I'm not your dad. I'm your manager, and I'm here
- 17:17Speaker 2: to make sure this runs properly. And for me, it's
- 17:20Speaker 2: about on the field. I want it. I wanted a uniformity.
- 17:24Speaker 2: I want a consistency. That's that's where I wanted to. Uh,
- 17:29Speaker 2: this could I don't want to use a word conformity,
- 17:32Speaker 2: but again, unity is probably the right way to put it.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Off the field, I wanted to do dress off if
- 17:36Speaker 2: you want it, or your hair out you want it.
- 17:37Speaker 2: I don't care how many earrings you were. I didn't
- 17:40Speaker 2: care about any of that. This isn't doesn't matter. But
- 17:42Speaker 2: when you got on the field, at that point, if
- 17:46Speaker 2: I gave you enough freedom to be yourself, you're going
- 17:48Speaker 2: to give me that respect back to play the game properly.
- 17:51Speaker 2: That's what I was thought.
- 17:52Speaker 3: I remember you getting flak. We picked a guy off
- 17:55Speaker 3: first in the Washington d C game, so outside of
- 17:59Speaker 3: the game, so now it was the first anyways, we
- 18:05Speaker 3: pick him off, and you were like, did you The
- 18:07Speaker 3: media was like did you call that play? You let
- 18:08Speaker 3: them do that? You're like, of course, we let them
- 18:10Speaker 3: do it. Like they see an opportunity, take advantage of it.
- 18:13Speaker 3: And I think that freedom, like you said, you handled
- 18:16Speaker 3: all of me and stuff. I never felt like there
- 18:18Speaker 3: was this curse, this thing hanging over because we were
- 18:20Speaker 3: our only new unit inside the clubhouse, and you let
- 18:25Speaker 3: us kind of have that freedom within that structure, and
- 18:29Speaker 3: I thought that's what brought out the best and and
- 18:32Speaker 3: all of us made myself included was that the last
- 18:34Speaker 3: the game, last out of the game, Yeah, pick him off.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Then we had that back paper. They're like, what if
- 18:39Speaker 3: he does the right field, was like, well what if
- 18:41Speaker 3: he doesn't?
- 18:41Speaker 1: You know what if you could fly?
- 18:44Speaker 2: The point was if it's the right baseball plate to do,
- 18:47Speaker 2: then do it totally. And if it doesn't work out,
- 18:49Speaker 2: well I'm okay with that, but it was the right
- 18:50Speaker 2: thing to do in the moment. And when you have
- 18:54Speaker 2: to worry about making a mistake, then you'll never do
- 18:57Speaker 2: the right thing because you're going to be Hobby right.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Absolutely, you literally I don't think Hobby knows this. I'm
- 19:05Speaker 1: sure he does. But how you handled Hobby and just
- 19:08Speaker 1: let Hobby be Hobby. He turned into the magician, He
- 19:11Speaker 1: turned into the wild man on the basis, and he
- 19:13Speaker 1: played into that. And that's why I believe he blossomed
- 19:17Speaker 1: because you see guys all the time in that type
- 19:19Speaker 1: of talent, well maybe not his talent, but come up
- 19:22Speaker 1: and just don't have the right mentors.
- 19:23Speaker 2: A baseball genius he is. I mean, he just sees
- 19:26Speaker 2: things that other people don't see, and then he's able
- 19:28Speaker 2: to react upon what he's seeing. Also, see if you
- 19:31Speaker 2: if you see something and there's any I mean any
- 19:35Speaker 2: kind of hesitation, then that moment's gone. So that's that's
- 19:38Speaker 2: purely reacted to a moment. And he's able to do that.
- 19:41Speaker 2: But he has to be able to he has to
- 19:43Speaker 2: know that if he does it and it doesn't turn out, well,
- 19:46Speaker 2: he's not going to the princes. I mean, if he knows,
- 19:49Speaker 2: he's going to know the principal's office every time he
- 19:51Speaker 2: could have tried this stuff about the place between third
- 19:53Speaker 2: and home, the running place where he's safe. Yeah right,
- 19:56Speaker 2: I mean stuff.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Like what what just happened?
- 20:00Speaker 1: Did you talk to him? Did you do you remember
- 20:02Speaker 1: conversations talking to him or now?
- 20:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Well most of the time when I did
- 20:06Speaker 2: talk Hi, when he was getting out of control at
- 20:07Speaker 2: the plate, That's when I would talk to him. I said, Hobby, right,
- 20:11Speaker 2: center counts. You know, that side of the field matters
- 20:13Speaker 2: accounts also, So I think primarily i'd be that my
- 20:17Speaker 2: conversations would be more when I thought he was getting
- 20:20Speaker 2: a little out of control offensively but on defense. Yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 2: what am I gonna tell me? There's nothing I could
- 20:29Speaker 2: help him with. I mean, that's another thing to know
- 20:30Speaker 2: as a coach, as a manager, even as a hitting coach.
- 20:33Speaker 2: And young Jim Edmonds, I'm up in Vancouver with him.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I'm the rowing minor league hitting instructor, and James is
- 20:39Speaker 2: just like tearing it up like he could right, And
- 20:42Speaker 2: I'm just going and I just I stand on the side.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I just watch him, and I'm watching he just tearing
- 20:46Speaker 2: it up. So I'm there for a couple of days
- 20:48Speaker 2: and he's like, you know, why come you're not talking
- 20:49Speaker 2: to me? Says I can't help you. I can only
- 20:54Speaker 2: serve the confusure right now, so please remit me to
- 20:56Speaker 2: just watch. I'm taking my notes. When I come back
- 20:59Speaker 2: in a town of things are right, I'll say something
- 21:01Speaker 2: to you, But for right now, I cannot help. It
- 21:03Speaker 2: can only hurt you. I feel them exactly.
- 21:05Speaker 3: That I want to sidetrack because this is like so
- 21:07Speaker 3: important to us. A little bit that has to do
- 21:09Speaker 3: with culture. But knowing your players and having all the
- 21:12Speaker 3: background you did the five levels of a big league Yeah, oh,
- 21:16Speaker 3: like that's the.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Compassion, the compassion you had for your players knowing kind
- 21:20Speaker 1: of where they were at and their journey was unmatched.
- 21:23Speaker 3: And I think that's different when you're actually a player
- 21:25Speaker 3: in the middle of it. And then as a veteran
- 21:27Speaker 3: I looked back, I was like, that's exactly right, Like.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Can you relist those real quick? Yea, let me tell
- 21:32Speaker 2: you exactly how it happened. Ninety five, six six, I
- 21:39Speaker 2: was the first base, first base coach. Yeah, with the
- 21:43Speaker 2: Angels and Marcel lash wonderful. Wonderful might have been ninety five,
- 21:46Speaker 2: but anyway, ninety first latch if things didn't work out well,
- 21:50Speaker 2: always took the hit. He always thought it was his fault,
- 21:53Speaker 2: and of course it wasn't. Marshall is one of the best,
- 21:56Speaker 2: if not the best, pitchy coach I've ever been around.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Lose a tough game in Nanaham Stadium, and I always
- 22:02Speaker 2: I would sit with him until he left because he
- 22:04Speaker 2: would just beat himself up. So We're sitting there and
- 22:07Speaker 2: I'm just I'm just observing. I don't know, I don't know,
- 22:09Speaker 2: I'm not I've never played in the big leagues. I
- 22:11Speaker 2: don't know. So I'm sitting there that night and I'm
- 22:13Speaker 2: taking it all in. I go back to my uncle Ricksaus.
- 22:15Speaker 2: I'm living with Uncle Rick up in Long Beach and
- 22:17Speaker 2: I get there and all of a sudden had this
- 22:19Speaker 2: epiphany and I again piece of paper by my bed,
- 22:22Speaker 2: wrote it down, what am I seeing here? What am
- 22:24Speaker 2: I seeing? So I don't know why I went five
- 22:26Speaker 2: levels level one happy to be here, because I was
- 22:33Speaker 2: writing and I was right there. I was only called
- 22:35Speaker 2: up a year year before. It must have been ninety
- 22:37Speaker 2: five happy to be here as level one, right, and
- 22:40Speaker 2: we all, like you said, I lost a brand new
- 22:42Speaker 2: leather bomber jacket at the Hurtz counter on my trip
- 22:45Speaker 2: from Vancouver to an On for my first trip to
- 22:48Speaker 2: the big leagues, because I was so excited, just happy
- 22:50Speaker 2: to be there. And then once you get there.
- 22:52Speaker 3: I got to the Big Leagues with the Dodgers and
- 22:54Speaker 3: didn't play, and like about the seventh day and I'm like,
- 22:57Speaker 3: something been triple A. I was so to be Alex
- 23:00Speaker 3: Corer actually told me, I said, he goes, how are
- 23:02Speaker 3: you doing? Russ's like, just happy to be here. He's
- 23:04Speaker 3: never say that I want to go back and play exactly.
- 23:08Speaker 2: So then you once you've arrived at we realize all that.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Then you get to the next point, Man, I really
- 23:13Speaker 2: like this. I want to stay here. This is really
- 23:16Speaker 2: good survival, and survival is very dangerous because when you're
- 23:20Speaker 2: when you're like happy to be here, you can help
- 23:22Speaker 2: the team. You're out there playing, you're pre wheeling it.
- 23:25Speaker 2: You have your blinders on, you don't even see the
- 23:26Speaker 2: third deck yet, the lights, whatever, you don't read the papers,
- 23:29Speaker 2: you don't care, so you're able to be productive and helpful.
- 23:32Speaker 2: But the moment the blinders come off, you start to
- 23:35Speaker 2: see everything, and man, I really dig on this stuff.
- 23:38Speaker 2: I want to stare. Then you become very cautious and
- 23:40Speaker 2: you don't want to make mistakes. You don't want anybody
- 23:43Speaker 2: yelling at you or whatever. I'm not playing you because
- 23:46Speaker 2: of that. So it works from happy to be here
- 23:48Speaker 2: to like, damn, stage two survival. I like this, I
- 23:51Speaker 2: want to stay here, dangerous, dangerous spot and guys in
- 23:54Speaker 2: that level really of course they can help you win,
- 23:57Speaker 2: but their their motivation isn't right. Their motivation is to.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Not to not yeah, almost selfish exactly.
- 24:04Speaker 2: And then here comes level three and this is what
- 24:06Speaker 2: you want to get to. And I remember, you know,
- 24:07Speaker 2: for me specifically, even as a coach, I be longer
- 24:10Speaker 2: I can do this. You know. That's a that's a
- 24:13Speaker 2: really strong epiphany, that moment when you look around at
- 24:17Speaker 2: your peers and you feel like you're as good as
- 24:18Speaker 2: everybody else here, everybody else out here, and you can
- 24:21Speaker 2: do this on a daily basis. I can contribute. I
- 24:23Speaker 2: know what to say in a meeting. I know how
- 24:25Speaker 2: to break this down because it's the same game, but
- 24:27Speaker 2: it's completely different minor leagues to bigleies. If we all
- 24:30Speaker 2: know that. So that's it. Level three, I be longer,
- 24:32Speaker 2: I can do this. Wow, that's when you actually exhale,
- 24:35Speaker 2: I think for the first time. Level four, I want
- 24:39Speaker 2: to make as much money as I thought you can,
- 24:42Speaker 2: right exactly. But it's true because it's it's a limit.
- 24:45Speaker 2: You don't do it for forty years. It's not like
- 24:47Speaker 2: you're a doctor or lawyer whatever, you could do this
- 24:49Speaker 2: for many you're you have a definite, finite time limit
- 24:53Speaker 2: regarding doing that.
- 24:54Speaker 3: So and that's a whole other pressure, right. I want
- 24:57Speaker 3: to have a good year because four.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Years there's a lot going on there. Man. So you
- 25:02Speaker 2: get to level four, I want to make as much
- 25:04Speaker 2: though as I can. And here comes level five. After
- 25:06Speaker 2: you've made some money, all you want to do is win.
- 25:08Speaker 2: And it's true. I mean, you go to the ballpark
- 25:10Speaker 2: and there's there's no weather agenda. You don't even think
- 25:12Speaker 2: about anything else but winning. That's it. I mean you you,
- 25:16Speaker 2: the blinders are on. You see this. Your your focus
- 25:20Speaker 2: is outstanding. You're not worried about all kinds of bullshit
- 25:22Speaker 2: or crap. You don't worry about it. You're just worried
- 25:24Speaker 2: about doing my job and then maybe helping somebody else
- 25:27Speaker 2: around me. And tonight's objective is to win, and how
- 25:30Speaker 2: do we do that.
- 25:31Speaker 3: We had a lot of those guys better and guys absolutely,
- 25:33Speaker 3: Oh my god, I think money.
- 25:35Speaker 1: I think what was great too, is because the mix
- 25:38Speaker 1: of veterans and young players help that it was so
- 25:42Speaker 1: easy to be level one through three, Yeah, but also
- 25:45Speaker 1: be level five because there was no one there that
- 25:48Speaker 1: wasn't expecting to win every night. And that was the
- 25:51Speaker 1: way your solid managing. You played pretty much win win
- 25:54Speaker 1: every night. Very rarely we laid it down, no, right,
- 25:57Speaker 1: that's right. Very rarely we punted, and when we did punt,
- 26:00Speaker 1: it was okay.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it was okay.
- 26:01Speaker 1: When we went through a skid, like I remember Hinsky
- 26:03Speaker 1: saying all the time, I'll tell you one guy who
- 26:05Speaker 1: does not panic, and he would point at you all
- 26:07Speaker 1: the time. Your manager does not. I mean, I'm sure
- 26:11Speaker 1: you had your own emotions, but there's teams you're on,
- 26:14Speaker 1: and like you see all the structure starting to crumble
- 26:17Speaker 1: a little bit, that the coaching staff's starting to be
- 26:19Speaker 1: pointing fingers a little bit, And was that never.
- 26:21Speaker 2: I was so grateful it took me so long to
- 26:24Speaker 2: become a major league manager, you know, because I observed that.
- 26:27Speaker 3: I regret that I don't experience that.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, that's that's the honesty, got truth. I mean,
- 26:32Speaker 2: I I saw from so many different angles. Being a
- 26:36Speaker 2: minor league roving instructor was very helpful too. Just going
- 26:39Speaker 2: from town to town every five six days, you go
- 26:42Speaker 2: to a different city, see a different manager. You'rs see
- 26:44Speaker 2: a different manager theirs on the other side, And I
- 26:47Speaker 2: was always observing what was going on with these managers
- 26:49Speaker 2: and how they handle situations. So that's part of it. Also,
- 26:53Speaker 2: So by the time I get to the major leagues,
- 26:55Speaker 2: I knew, like I said, I know what I know.
- 26:57Speaker 2: I knew, I knew I could get you. I would
- 27:00Speaker 2: give you examples if you pointed out different situations. I'd
- 27:03Speaker 2: give you example, I would call recall situations where that's
- 27:07Speaker 2: where I learned this from, and that's why I was
- 27:10Speaker 2: able to process it the way I did. That's the
- 27:13Speaker 2: experienced component of it that I that I were just
- 27:16Speaker 2: talking about it, the control versus experience, the empowerment versus control.
- 27:20Speaker 2: I mean, I learned all that stuff. So when we
- 27:22Speaker 2: got the different situations, I swear to you, I don't
- 27:25Speaker 2: even know. I this is not like a bragging kind
- 27:27Speaker 2: of a comment. I don't know what it was with
- 27:29Speaker 2: you guys. If anything popped that I really had not
- 27:31Speaker 2: been through before.
- 27:32Speaker 3: When you put when you put Travis Wooden.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Like, well you remember that that was the night that
- 27:45Speaker 2: the lefty pitch matisya madis?
- 27:47Speaker 3: Yeah, oh that's the We've already discussed that game. Remember
- 27:50Speaker 3: remember CEO came in and pissed off the whole coaching staff.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Lesser told that story.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it was, it was.
- 27:55Speaker 3: It was hairy. I remember we spoke about it, but
- 27:58Speaker 3: I remember the yeah, it was very came in, he
- 28:02Speaker 3: was waiting on everybody, My bad and then the squeeze bomb.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Squeeze, But I was sick, fearless. Well, the thing was
- 28:11Speaker 2: I give Deal a lot of credit because Deal went
- 28:12Speaker 2: on the walk during the game. He was so upset
- 28:14Speaker 2: with himself because the way the first was they scored
- 28:17Speaker 2: six runs in the first first two and three. We
- 28:20Speaker 2: need to to to you know, that's the kind of
- 28:22Speaker 2: stuff that bonds, that brings things down, there no doubt
- 28:24Speaker 2: about it. So you take chances when you're gonna lose,
- 28:27Speaker 2: or if you're losing, the sky is the limit, you
- 28:30Speaker 2: just throw everything out there. You could be way more
- 28:34Speaker 2: liberal under those moments, you're way more conservative. When it's tighter,
- 28:38Speaker 2: you just are. It's just it's the way the game's played.
- 28:40Speaker 2: So when you're losing or in the process of losing,
- 28:43Speaker 2: you do anything you can to possibly win. And that's
- 28:46Speaker 2: that was the wooty thing. And then we did it
- 28:47Speaker 2: with strophe and left field in Cincinnati one time or two.
- 28:51Speaker 2: That's what we The Joe West and the umpire are
- 28:54Speaker 2: really getting upset with me because I was like testing
- 28:56Speaker 2: the rules a little bit stuff playing that was talked
- 29:02Speaker 2: about and I talked about, but we he and I
- 29:05Speaker 2: talked about that. That was like really good. That was
- 29:07Speaker 2: your idea originally that was his idea.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Well, it permitted us to do the back picks with
- 29:12Speaker 3: Hobby and all kind of stuff.
- 29:15Speaker 2: So when you when you when you prep against the Cubs,
- 29:17Speaker 2: like there's so much to talk about, no doubt, so
- 29:19Speaker 2: much to talk about.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I want to I want to, like we talk culture
- 29:23Speaker 3: all day. One more thing I want to hit on.
- 29:24Speaker 3: How did you you said you've learned this. How did
- 29:26Speaker 3: you get the celebration after wins? That was a big
- 29:29Speaker 3: part of Pioneer. That was a big part of us.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Try to shots after we sweep, sometimes shots before the game.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Whatever it took. Man, I'm trying to think of, like
- 29:43Speaker 2: the first time the celebration, I was at the Rays,
- 29:48Speaker 2: and I can't remember the genesis of it, but I
- 29:51Speaker 2: do remember the genesis of the disco ball. I told
- 29:54Speaker 2: Wesley he was the clubhousk. I said, Westy, we need
- 29:56Speaker 2: some disco balls in here. So like the game would
- 29:59Speaker 2: be over, we'd walk away win and all of a sudden,
- 30:00Speaker 2: you like at nightclub, it was like the warm up
- 30:03Speaker 2: lounge and hazels, and that's what I wanted to look like.
- 30:05Speaker 2: So we walked in there and all this stuff's going on.
- 30:08Speaker 2: We had Chris Rock one night at the head of
- 30:09Speaker 2: the line. We won. We won he's yelling as we
- 30:12Speaker 2: walk in the locker room with the disco balls going.
- 30:15Speaker 2: So that was the first thing, and then it just
- 30:16Speaker 2: worked from there. It morphed into us Saint Paul girls signed,
- 30:19Speaker 2: It morphed into instruments Lonely brought in like a saxophone
- 30:23Speaker 2: that he was horrible at playing, but it was great,
- 30:25Speaker 2: and it just kept evolving Angel James. Yeah, and then
- 30:27Speaker 2: we turned ours into yeah. Then we took it to
- 30:29Speaker 2: another Well, we had an actual celebration. Yeah, we had
- 30:32Speaker 2: walked up. But it never got it never got No,
- 30:35Speaker 2: it doesn't get old. Celebrating achievement never gets old. That's right.
- 30:38Speaker 1: When that's and the best part about that is lose
- 30:43Speaker 1: for thirty minutes, right because there's so many games, and
- 30:46Speaker 1: it was like after thirty minutes, even if it was
- 30:48Speaker 1: a tough off, all right, that's it.
- 30:50Speaker 2: On to the next one. That was that was the
- 30:51Speaker 2: problem when I had with the Angels, when I in
- 30:54Speaker 2: the late in the middle to late nineties. Remember we
- 30:57Speaker 2: lost a huge lead to the Mariners in ninety six.
- 31:00Speaker 2: We were up by thirteen or fourteen games. I was
- 31:02Speaker 2: like I was on August, like August six or what August,
- 31:07Speaker 2: You're born on August eighth or ninth. Okay, how about
- 31:10Speaker 2: I knew that's all right, that's crazy. So we have
- 31:13Speaker 2: like a thirteen or fourteen game lead in the beginning
- 31:15Speaker 2: of August and we lose it. We have a one
- 31:18Speaker 2: game playoff with the Mariners at the end of the season.
- 31:20Speaker 2: We lost Ranny Johnson versus Langston in the Kingdom. I
- 31:24Speaker 2: was the first base coach anyway that team and teams
- 31:28Speaker 2: after that, I felt would take a loss and turning
- 31:32Speaker 2: into tomorrow's loss. Also, just by the way they reacted,
- 31:35Speaker 2: I'm watching guys come in the next day. They're sullen.
- 31:37Speaker 2: They can't even talk to each other. You know. Dave Hollins,
- 31:40Speaker 2: I love Dave Hollins, and David would be like you
- 31:42Speaker 2: never did. He did not like to lose, brother, but
- 31:46Speaker 2: I would like, I would like, always funny man, God
- 31:49Speaker 2: did he make me laugh. But you you come in
- 31:51Speaker 2: the next day and that we're still we just lost.
- 31:53Speaker 2: It felt like we just lost, and I hated that.
- 31:56Speaker 2: I knew that was why we're going to lose today
- 31:58Speaker 2: and possibly again tomorrow. Two we finally shake it get
- 32:01Speaker 2: back to being normal. So that that made me think
- 32:03Speaker 2: of that.
- 32:05Speaker 3: That that's simply the celebration one helped you in that day, right, right,
- 32:10Speaker 3: and then saying with about thirty minutes, like fine soft
- 32:12Speaker 3: for thirty minutes whatever on man, moving on, Yeah, people
- 32:14Speaker 3: can come in whatever.
- 32:15Speaker 1: It's just so easy to go through the motions win
- 32:17Speaker 1: or lose, like all right, well, not the treatment, I
- 32:19Speaker 1: have to do this now, right Exactly, It's like, hold on,
- 32:21Speaker 1: let's let's celebrate the guys of the player of the game,
- 32:23Speaker 1: that's right, or bring guys in and make everyone feel
- 32:26Speaker 1: a part of it. If if a reliever got big outs, right,
- 32:28Speaker 1: those guys are on islands for their pictures.
- 32:30Speaker 2: So it was it was incredible, but losing hard for
- 32:33Speaker 2: thirties also more because somebody may have had like some
- 32:36Speaker 2: guys have a good game too, you know, and then
- 32:38Speaker 2: but we've lost, so they expected to control all of that. Also,
- 32:41Speaker 2: there's there's respect built into both sides of that, whether
- 32:44Speaker 2: to celebrate because some guys when you win, had a
- 32:47Speaker 2: horrible day, but they stileft the rebel in the win.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Yes, that's all me.
- 32:52Speaker 3: Veteran team.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Yeah, when I would be bad or not play well,
- 32:56Speaker 1: I had to be so and it helped me get
- 32:59Speaker 1: over and not playing well because he's like winning cures everything.
- 33:01Speaker 2: Absolutely, I stunk and we won. It was like, all right,
- 33:04Speaker 2: and that's that's awesome. Not everybody's like that.
- 33:07Speaker 3: Yeah you know, yeah, but you gotta learn that skill
- 33:10Speaker 3: set from around good veterans leadership. It's like, no, no, no,
- 33:13Speaker 3: we won. I know you had a bad day, made
- 33:14Speaker 3: three errors and went over, but like back to tomorrow
- 33:17Speaker 3: because that's the one. I think that the short term
- 33:19Speaker 3: memory is so important in baseball in particular because it
- 33:22Speaker 3: is everything.
- 33:22Speaker 1: There's no coincidence.
- 33:24Speaker 2: I was coming back down three to one.
- 33:25Speaker 1: No, no, that was all literally two years of life
- 33:29Speaker 1: lessons that we're all learning from veterans to young guys.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:33Speaker 1: It was just yeah. And when we were talking about trust,
- 33:36Speaker 1: I thought of I came into your office one day
- 33:39Speaker 1: and I was like, this is the type of manager
- 33:42Speaker 1: that you were to me. They were like a second
- 33:44Speaker 1: dad as my manager. And it was I was like, man,
- 33:47Speaker 1: last night, I think we went to the Aviary and
- 33:50Speaker 1: Chicago and they make these like crazy drinks and we
- 33:52Speaker 1: drink a bunch of wine. Emily and I, I oh
- 33:55Speaker 1: got after your last night.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Oh nice?
- 33:56Speaker 1: You asked me what I was drinking? How I was feeling.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I was like, all right, I just hit the middle
- 34:00Speaker 1: one today and it was like I walk out of there.
- 34:02Speaker 2: I feel so good.
- 34:03Speaker 1: I just told my manager I got absolutely annihilated last night,
- 34:06Speaker 1: and he supported me, and I probably went out.
- 34:09Speaker 2: And had a great game. Sometimes it's necessary, brothers, that
- 34:12Speaker 2: it's necessary. That's that's we play every day. We play
- 34:15Speaker 2: every day, and for those that have never played every
- 34:18Speaker 2: day have no idea what that feels like. And I'm
- 34:21Speaker 2: not just talking about physically. The mental part of this
- 34:23Speaker 2: game is the devastating part of this game. When you
- 34:26Speaker 2: can control your your thoughts and your actions mentally, that's
- 34:31Speaker 2: the difference between a superstarist and all that being a
- 34:34Speaker 2: big leaguer being a four A guy, guy that really
- 34:36Speaker 2: can never get over the hump from triple A to
- 34:39Speaker 2: that four eight. We call it four A because it's
- 34:41Speaker 2: the tweener guy between being a minor leaguer and a
- 34:44Speaker 2: major leaguer. But you can't get over that. It's not
- 34:46Speaker 2: because your skills aren't good. Your brain just can't deal
- 34:49Speaker 2: with it, man. And when you can deal with it,
- 34:51Speaker 2: when you learn how to like throw it away. I said,
- 34:54Speaker 2: tell guys, sometimes you see that big lake out there,
- 34:58Speaker 2: like I called you know, I called it a notionan
- 35:00Speaker 2: on the right home tonight. Take all those thoughts, put
- 35:02Speaker 2: wrap it on a big old rock and throw it
- 35:04Speaker 2: in that lake, and then come back tomorrow, because you
- 35:06Speaker 2: don't need those thoughts. Yeah.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I always said when I played, if I was able
- 35:11Speaker 1: to mentally shut off for one hour, it was equivalent
- 35:14Speaker 1: to two weeks reset. So like I'd go out on
- 35:17Speaker 1: Lake Michigan, or hang out with some friends, or go
- 35:20Speaker 1: out in Chicago or on the road.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Tso meet you and Happer at test. Yeah, I was
- 35:24Speaker 3: so hungover in the flight home when I was a
- 35:26Speaker 3: special assistant and I get I checked the box score
- 35:29Speaker 3: when we land him and half had the only RBI.
- 35:31Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, that's one.
- 35:33Speaker 3: And I'm like, how on that Hecker they even seeing?
- 35:35Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember training morning, just spring training one year.
- 35:40Speaker 1: We go to Vegas every year.
- 35:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:42Speaker 1: You caught me in the office and I lined it
- 35:43Speaker 1: up perfect. I was going to play the first game.
- 35:45Speaker 1: You were giving me off the second. I was like,
- 35:48Speaker 1: let's set the whole night up right. Joe Cousman's office
- 35:51Speaker 1: may be a day or two before he goes Hey,
- 35:52Speaker 1: you know Vegas, you know, puts on a big show.
- 35:56Speaker 1: They need you to play the second game. It's like, oh,
- 35:58Speaker 1: and I told him I had this whole night. I'm like, oh,
- 36:00Speaker 1: He's like, don't worry about it. He's like, you're gonna
- 36:03Speaker 1: come in to have a great night. There's gonna be
- 36:05Speaker 1: three balls, try to hit the center one. And I
- 36:08Speaker 1: brought the idea up. I think of the Bloody Mary
- 36:11Speaker 1: station and the Mimosa bar. Okay, okay, And the next
- 36:14Speaker 1: morning we are in Vegas. We had a Bloody Mary
- 36:17Speaker 1: barfore the game, themsation and it was like we were
- 36:22Speaker 1: there to work and also have fun, and you if
- 36:25Speaker 1: you don't do both, it's.
- 36:29Speaker 2: You're gonna implode at some point. That's the point. It's
- 36:31Speaker 2: all about balance. The whole world's about balance. Your life's
- 36:33Speaker 2: about balance. You got a new baby right now. You
- 36:35Speaker 2: know exactly what that feels like. Once you have a
- 36:38Speaker 2: child of your own, you understand what the word sacrifice
- 36:41Speaker 2: really means. And until you have that baby, you'll never
- 36:43Speaker 2: really know what the word sacrifice truly means. Everything's exposed
- 36:47Speaker 2: to you as you go through life and in baseball
- 36:50Speaker 2: right now, and I'm just gonna pound on it for
- 36:52Speaker 2: a second, because right now the things we're talking about
- 36:54Speaker 2: are not really embraced anymore. They're not really considered important anymore.
- 36:58Speaker 2: And to me, they're the most important part of it.
- 37:00Speaker 2: All the other stuff that you want to teach me,
- 37:02Speaker 2: that's great, and I want I want, like I said,
- 37:05Speaker 2: the best coaches want, the best staff, whatever. But I
- 37:07Speaker 2: also want a pressure release valve. There's enough pressure being
- 37:12Speaker 2: applied to athletes. I was watching the the NBA game
- 37:16Speaker 2: last night. What does the Spurs and the Knicks all
- 37:18Speaker 2: of a sudden you're playing a championship game in the
- 37:20Speaker 2: first month of the season. Pretty much, My god, that's
- 37:23Speaker 2: kind of like the WBC Classic I guess right, you know,
- 37:26Speaker 2: a couple years ago when Tawny pitched that. But anyway,
- 37:28Speaker 2: I believe in the pressure release valve, and I don't
- 37:31Speaker 2: I don't know that enough people understand that. Everybody that
- 37:35Speaker 2: everybody that's really never done what you guys have done.
- 37:37Speaker 2: So much respect for which you guys have done. And
- 37:40Speaker 2: that's where my my perspective comes from. I never did it.
- 37:43Speaker 2: I was I was good maybe once two three times
- 37:45Speaker 2: a week at the most as a baseball player, and
- 37:48Speaker 2: so the guy that could play every day, I think,
- 37:51Speaker 2: the hell, how can he how can he maintain is
- 37:53Speaker 2: his focus, his sanity, and not only that, your physical
- 37:58Speaker 2: repetition of your skill. No, that's that's that's big because
- 38:03Speaker 2: you know to be able to do everybody takes it
- 38:06Speaker 2: for granted. But whether it's a good batting stroke, whether
- 38:08Speaker 2: it's a good throwing stroke, your good fielding stroke, whatever
- 38:11Speaker 2: it might be, to do that every day, it is
- 38:15Speaker 2: just than one percent of the population whatever. It's so
- 38:18Speaker 2: special you, and that's so different.
- 38:20Speaker 1: He was a switch I was a switch guy. When
- 38:23Speaker 1: he was playing, his switch was always on. Okay, so
- 38:25Speaker 1: he'd come in, he's playing whatever, fifth day, playing day,
- 38:31Speaker 1: of course, I tell.
- 38:33Speaker 3: You, And I was up Lesser's ass because I'm like,
- 38:35Speaker 3: if you sucking, don't get to hit, I only get
- 38:38Speaker 3: three at bats.
- 38:39Speaker 2: Four and then then then who hears about him? Right?
- 38:42Speaker 2: He had. I had a great argument one night of
- 38:44Speaker 2: one day of my lock in my office about something
- 38:47Speaker 2: I said, I pitched it for you or something like
- 38:49Speaker 2: that in Pittsburgh. Yeah, you came. He got really pissed off.
- 38:51Speaker 2: We had a great conversation. I can't remember exactly how
- 38:53Speaker 2: it went.
- 38:54Speaker 3: But you were always open. Well, I think it was like, uh,
- 38:57Speaker 3: it was in fifteen, and I think I get pinch
- 39:00Speaker 3: it for and from like little.
- 39:03Speaker 1: He was angry elf when he yeah, I was just like.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Yeah, it was just one of those things you always
- 39:08Speaker 3: hated getting pinch it for. But I didn't think the
- 39:10Speaker 3: guy pinch hit for me was better than me.
- 39:12Speaker 2: You know. It was one of those.
- 39:15Speaker 3: So it was al Contra or something like.
- 39:18Speaker 2: It could have been yeah, the little yeah switch do
- 39:21Speaker 2: it to pop? Yeah, he's never had the big league pop.
- 39:24Speaker 3: We tried to Pat. That's when it said, it me.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Off if you would get mad at me because I
- 39:30Speaker 1: would be off and I would keep my switch off
- 39:32Speaker 1: all the time.
- 39:34Speaker 2: Rossie.
- 39:34Speaker 1: You know, I could flip the switch at anytime, and
- 39:37Speaker 1: he's like, my switch always needs.
- 39:39Speaker 2: To be on.
- 39:39Speaker 3: What I managed. I came in and ripped the team
- 39:42Speaker 3: one day, just had an explosion, which there wasn't many
- 39:44Speaker 3: of those. But he afterwards he came to my off
- 39:46Speaker 3: and he goes I was almost I had to hold
- 39:48Speaker 3: myself back from laughing almost video. I was like, uh,
- 39:53Speaker 3: you know, but I want to get into fifteen and
- 39:57Speaker 3: talk a little bit about we have our our ideas,
- 40:00Speaker 3: but when did you think we were good in fifteen
- 40:03Speaker 3: when you're like, oh, these guys figured it out. Was
- 40:05Speaker 3: there a moment or what? What was we feel like
- 40:09Speaker 3: it was San Francisco, Remember I sleep in San Francisco
- 40:11Speaker 3: a game sweep?
- 40:12Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, is that August? That was like August? Yeah, yeah,
- 40:15Speaker 2: And that was also Addison at short stop and started
- 40:20Speaker 2: second base. KB had just oh was first question?
- 40:24Speaker 1: Sorry, I got to hit this a good one. Did
- 40:27Speaker 1: you how hard did you fight for KB KB to
- 40:29Speaker 1: break camp with us in fifteen or did you at all?
- 40:31Speaker 2: I didn't Did you have to say there was no
- 40:34Speaker 2: there was nothing I could do because it was it's
- 40:36Speaker 2: all about the rules. I mean, they could do that
- 40:38Speaker 2: as much as they want, but it's all about the rules.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Then you could do about that. Not a thing it
- 40:42Speaker 2: was going. It happened with Longloria here when it was
- 40:44Speaker 2: with the rings. Longo went down for a couple of weeks,
- 40:47Speaker 2: then came up and tore it up. Yeah. KB was down,
- 40:49Speaker 2: came up and tow it up.
- 40:50Speaker 1: It's not just nobody.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's nobody's fault. It's just the rules of the game.
- 40:54Speaker 2: That's all that was.
- 40:55Speaker 1: So there's nothing like division by what two games?
- 40:57Speaker 2: It's like yeah, but there's there's nothing to as a manager.
- 41:00Speaker 2: There's nothing I could have done as as okay as
- 41:03Speaker 2: a Gene mock manager. That would have never happened. As
- 41:05Speaker 2: a ear weaver, that would have never happened. I don't
- 41:08Speaker 2: even know if the rules. Oh my god, everybody, I
- 41:12Speaker 2: mean everybody was afraid to come into your clubhouse. The GM,
- 41:15Speaker 2: the assistant GM, anybody else that worked upstairs was afraid
- 41:18Speaker 2: to come in a big league club house. It was
- 41:20Speaker 2: that daunting. I love that, I'm not That is not
- 41:23Speaker 2: an exaggeration, That's exactly the true.
- 41:27Speaker 1: If the players take over the right way.
- 41:29Speaker 3: I think the good gms are the ones that are
- 41:31Speaker 3: in there every day, but in a positive way, right
- 41:33Speaker 3: like given, given, given better, better feedback. Yeah, and when
- 41:37Speaker 3: did you feel like we were good?
- 41:39Speaker 1: The famous Miggy Montero, we are, we are good.
- 41:43Speaker 2: When did I feel we were good? I was like,
- 41:47Speaker 2: honestly the San Francisco Series, because I remember driving to
- 41:49Speaker 2: the ballpark. We were good before that, I can't remember.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I can't give you specifically. Could we were building?
- 41:54Speaker 3: But we we never We couldn't win a bunch of
- 41:57Speaker 3: a row, but we didn't lose a bunch of row.
- 41:58Speaker 2: We just kind of. I thought that San Francis School
- 42:00Speaker 2: Series was the seminal moment because it was the Giants,
- 42:02Speaker 2: and I remember driving my pickup truck down Clark on
- 42:05Speaker 2: the way to the ballpark, and I'm getting myself jacked
- 42:08Speaker 2: up because I thought this is big. I mean, I
- 42:11Speaker 2: never apply more weight to anything, but I thought, this
- 42:14Speaker 2: one's kind of big to handle the Giants right now
- 42:17Speaker 2: could really send us on the trajectory we're looking for.
- 42:20Speaker 2: And it did. So we're going there and we win
- 42:23Speaker 2: the first street and then the last game they had
- 42:25Speaker 2: the bases loaded and nobody out. We're up three to
- 42:27Speaker 2: two and run. Don't get s out of it, but
- 42:28Speaker 2: don't gets out of it somehow? Is that right? Right?
- 42:31Speaker 2: But I thought that was a seminal moment in the
- 42:32Speaker 2: year where we after that we knew we were good.
- 42:35Speaker 2: We did. It's not about when I did. It's like
- 42:37Speaker 2: when the guys know you're good. Everybody's contributing. Everybody, but
- 42:41Speaker 2: our defense got tight. Our defense, I mean with Addison
- 42:44Speaker 2: and Starling over there, everything changed defensively, which really was
- 42:48Speaker 2: big at that point. Yeah, I think for me, if
- 42:53Speaker 2: I had a because I I'm answering the question based
- 42:56Speaker 2: on the fact I remember driving on clark Y Yeah,
- 42:58Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's pretty.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Well, Grandmam. I remember I was sweeping them and they
- 43:01Speaker 3: had two championships on that. But that was the other
- 43:03Speaker 3: part of the chance, right like, and they said, all
- 43:05Speaker 3: those guys Buster and yeah, all the boys Letscam and Bumgardner.
- 43:09Speaker 3: I mean they were loading.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Oh yeah, solute. Yeah.
- 43:11Speaker 1: In twenty fifteen, you had to move a superstar shortstop
- 43:18Speaker 1: from shortstop to second base, and he did it with
- 43:21Speaker 1: he was a great Starlin Casho was so he was
- 43:24Speaker 1: such a good leader, especially a Latin leader, which it
- 43:29Speaker 1: was like amazing for me. He was one of my
- 43:32Speaker 1: biggest mentors when I was young. But for it to
- 43:34Speaker 1: be able to do that and move him off shortstop
- 43:35Speaker 1: to second and him you feel good about it, was
- 43:38Speaker 1: like I have so much history in itself.
- 43:40Speaker 2: I remember we're talking right now. I'm sitting in that
- 43:42Speaker 2: little manager's office and Starling sitting right over there right
- 43:46Speaker 2: and I'm explaining things to him. You know, I'm sure,
- 43:49Speaker 2: I'm sure he hated it, right, but he never he
- 43:51Speaker 2: never was disrespectful. He listened all the way through. And
- 43:55Speaker 2: this is really the best part about that for me,
- 43:57Speaker 2: as a manager, because I think that's the way it
- 43:59Speaker 2: should be. It was just me. It wasn't like a
- 44:01Speaker 2: front office dude with me or anything like that. It
- 44:03Speaker 2: wasn't like I would I wasn't being supported or the
- 44:07Speaker 2: conversation didn't include other voices. Was just me and him,
- 44:11Speaker 2: as it should be. The only time you bring somebody
- 44:13Speaker 2: else in, you think there's going to be a fight
- 44:16Speaker 2: and the guy, and the guy's pretty big. But anyway,
- 44:19Speaker 2: he sat there and he took it, and I told
- 44:21Speaker 2: he wasn't going to play for a couple of days.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I told him that because we wanted to get him
- 44:24Speaker 2: used to second base and never cried or complained. You
- 44:27Speaker 2: remember how well he played after that?
- 44:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, even Alfonso because Soriano was such a good
- 44:34Speaker 1: leader and he sorry would have like I think sorry.
- 44:37Speaker 1: One year played with the assistant is the entire YEA.
- 44:39Speaker 1: He wanted to play every day. Stalin taught me every
- 44:42Speaker 1: day thirteen I hit like two thirty. Hey, keep your
- 44:45Speaker 1: head up, we play every day. You play every said
- 44:47Speaker 1: that too, I don't care if we play every day well,
- 44:50Speaker 1: And I learned as a young player that's how it's valuable,
- 44:53Speaker 1: that's how you earned horse upmost amount of respectful.
- 44:56Speaker 3: When you're talking about that some of some advice I've
- 44:58Speaker 3: passed along that I use. It's like when I was managing,
- 45:01Speaker 3: it's like, you know, I tell the guys the truth
- 45:04Speaker 3: because if I lie to them, you know, like give
- 45:06Speaker 3: them that line, you know.
- 45:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's not only in baseball, but anything else.
- 45:10Speaker 2: If I if I tell you the truth, you might
- 45:12Speaker 2: not like me for a week or ten days, but
- 45:14Speaker 2: if I lie to you, you can hate me forever.
- 45:15Speaker 3: And that's such a truth. And going back on players experience,
- 45:19Speaker 3: and especially when I was coming up, it was a
- 45:20Speaker 3: little bit more. They would sugarcoat some things or not
- 45:22Speaker 3: to eat right, and all you wanted to do as
- 45:24Speaker 3: a man is like just tell me where I stand
- 45:27Speaker 3: right then it's on me. And you did a good
- 45:31Speaker 3: job of that. But that phrase I've used so much
- 45:33Speaker 3: just because it's like I again, you try to have
- 45:35Speaker 3: compassion with it, but I'm going to hit you with
- 45:38Speaker 3: the truth knowing I'm on your side. I'm on your side,
- 45:40Speaker 3: but I'm gonna just be completely honest and transparent because
- 45:43Speaker 3: I think that's the best way for you to be
- 45:46Speaker 3: able to deal with it and us.
- 45:47Speaker 2: To move forward. Everybody moves forward after this, right, exactly right.
- 45:50Speaker 2: Otherwise there's always this consternation, interpretation, what does you really mean?
- 45:57Speaker 2: All the stuff questioning you're ready gets it gets dragged out.
- 46:00Speaker 2: This is the sharp knife compared to the doll knife.
- 46:02Speaker 2: Always use the sharp knife. Always when it comes to
- 46:05Speaker 2: a tough decision, use the sharp knife, because then it
- 46:08Speaker 2: has a chance to heal more quickly. The dull knife,
- 46:10Speaker 2: you get a bad edge, it just gets uh, it
- 46:13Speaker 2: doesn't scar properly whatever, and eventually turns into like a
- 46:17Speaker 2: scar tissue that really never goes away. Use the sharp knife.
- 46:19Speaker 2: When you use the sharp knife, like you just said,
- 46:22Speaker 2: everything moves forward rather quickly after that.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Another pioneer thing was you would send the lineup out
- 46:27Speaker 1: the night before. Oh yeah, and that was I never
- 46:30Speaker 1: heard of that.
- 46:30Speaker 2: I did that. I don't know if you did.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Now it's hated now it's almost a customers standard practice
- 46:36Speaker 1: because if for me, thankfully I played every single day,
- 46:43Speaker 1: but I never worried about that in everything, but being
- 46:46Speaker 1: a leader on the team and say Halp wasn't playing
- 46:50Speaker 1: or short wasn't playing. You got to talk to them
- 46:52Speaker 1: off the ledge. And if you get to the field
- 46:54Speaker 1: and there they see that day that they're in the
- 46:56Speaker 1: line they're not, and then they're pissed off all day
- 46:59Speaker 1: over one sixty two. It just takes a little chink
- 47:02Speaker 1: of the armor. Yeah, you know, and you need all
- 47:05Speaker 1: guys pulling the same road.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Now. I'll tell you how I learned that. Darren urstat
- 47:09Speaker 2: do you guys know, Yeah, don't mess with I never
- 47:13Speaker 2: play with him. I love that man.
- 47:15Speaker 3: He reminds me a lot like he's like utly, like
- 47:17Speaker 3: he's gonna, yeah, he's gonna, he's gonna do whatever it
- 47:20Speaker 3: takes to win.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Correct. So with social as a manager, and we didn't
- 47:26Speaker 2: do that. We didn't put the lineup out the night before.
- 47:29Speaker 2: So uh, going the next day and I'm in charge,
- 47:31Speaker 2: I'm the bench coach doing all the paperwork and stuff.
- 47:34Speaker 2: I gotta go tell Arsty's not in the lineup. Oh
- 47:36Speaker 2: my god, he says, what do you tell me last night?
- 47:40Speaker 2: Because if you don't tell somebody the night before they're
- 47:42Speaker 2: not in the lineup and every day guy, then you
- 47:43Speaker 2: really don't have a day off. There's no night off,
- 47:47Speaker 2: right because because you go through your whole routine and
- 47:48Speaker 2: you get up at the same time, you eat whatever,
- 47:50Speaker 2: you want to eat, you come to the ballpark the
- 47:52Speaker 2: same time, so you don't. You really don't get a
- 47:55Speaker 2: day up unless somebody knows they have a day off.
- 47:57Speaker 2: A regular player the night before. The utility guy not
- 48:02Speaker 2: necessarily as much, but a regular guy really needs to
- 48:04Speaker 2: know the night before for him to truly have a
- 48:06Speaker 2: day off. So Erstye taught me that. So I used
- 48:08Speaker 2: to do that even before that, though I did that
- 48:10Speaker 2: in instructional leagues. When I did instructional leagues, I used
- 48:13Speaker 2: to put a week's worth of lineups up in advance,
- 48:15Speaker 2: so everybody knew when they were playing. And instructionally, you
- 48:18Speaker 2: play a different day service. You're not just an everyday guy.
- 48:20Speaker 2: But I wanted guys to requisition their work in a
- 48:23Speaker 2: way that you could maximize their work and they knew
- 48:26Speaker 2: what they had to do on a daily basis.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Yeah, so I believe.
- 48:29Speaker 2: But when I got to as an inter manager, I
- 48:33Speaker 2: was that. A couple of times with Agels, I would
- 48:35Speaker 2: I would have the lineups as they were walking out
- 48:38Speaker 2: the after the night game whatever on the on the
- 48:41Speaker 2: door as they walked out and be the next day's lineup,
- 48:43Speaker 2: And that's when I started doing it. So that was
- 48:45Speaker 2: in ninety six I was an interim manager and ninety
- 48:48Speaker 2: nine I was an intern manager. That's when. That's when
- 48:51Speaker 2: we did that there.
- 48:52Speaker 1: So I remember this. It was so good and I'm
- 48:55Speaker 1: gonna plug Corona here. Stroke by strophe was grinded for us,
- 49:00Speaker 1: or like in August or September and you told him
- 49:02Speaker 1: the night before you are not hitching tomorrow, and then
- 49:05Speaker 1: next day there was like a little blow up locker
- 49:08Speaker 1: with Corona or a little umbrella like a beach chair.
- 49:12Speaker 1: And I was dying because you you recognize that and
- 49:15Speaker 1: you're like, no, you you grind it for us, You're
- 49:17Speaker 1: you're down, You're do and enjoy it. And always for
- 49:20Speaker 1: me it was like when I was down, I knew
- 49:23Speaker 1: I wasn't playing for the most part, or I was
- 49:25Speaker 1: I turned off until like the biggest.
- 49:27Speaker 2: Wish, right it had to be like something dire that
- 49:30Speaker 2: we had to use it. But yeah, well, and.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Front office is now the one thing that I I
- 49:34Speaker 3: definitely saw as a player and try to use as
- 49:37Speaker 3: a manager, Like you give your everyday player off. It's
- 49:39Speaker 3: not an off day if you're expecting the pinch hit, because.
- 49:42Speaker 1: The guys now if you can't if you turn on
- 49:46Speaker 1: when you're an everyday player, if your mind turns on,
- 49:51Speaker 1: it's not an off day. Yeah, if so, when I
- 49:53Speaker 1: would like I would tell young guys. I told Anthony
- 49:56Speaker 1: Volpi he he heard his shoulder and he had a
- 49:58Speaker 1: couple of days off. I'm like, dude, just watch the
- 50:00Speaker 1: game with no expectation. That's what be a fan of
- 50:03Speaker 1: the game. Sit on the top step and like, enjoy
- 50:06Speaker 1: where you are and if you have to turn on
- 50:08Speaker 1: to get a pinch it, just do it. It's one
- 50:11Speaker 1: a bat like stay off because that's stress, that mental stress.
- 50:17Speaker 1: The value of off.
- 50:17Speaker 3: Days or the value of the everyday player. I backed
- 50:20Speaker 3: up Brian mccannon Atlanta. I was like, my one goal
- 50:22Speaker 3: is not to get this guy up off the seat,
- 50:24Speaker 3: you know, like that's how I get your person wanted
- 50:26Speaker 3: to win. I want to win today because I know
- 50:28Speaker 3: if we're winning, he doesn't pinch, hit for me or
- 50:30Speaker 3: of course for somebody and go in. But fast forward
- 50:34Speaker 3: to the end of fifteen a little bit. I think
- 50:37Speaker 3: the Pittsburgh Wildcard Game is the most important game it comes.
- 50:40Speaker 1: I think that the most wild game of all.
- 50:42Speaker 2: Right, how about it?
- 50:43Speaker 3: You let you let Arieta go see g Right, the
- 50:47Speaker 3: nastiest picture on the planet by far, but that that
- 50:50Speaker 3: would be so taboo in today's.
- 50:51Speaker 1: Game, are you kidding me?
- 50:53Speaker 2: Well, well, well, Mota just did it right with the dollars.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Yeh yeah, yeah, okay, but let me let me give
- 50:58Speaker 2: you the history on that one. You remember, we were
- 51:00Speaker 2: playing Minnesota in Minnesota and uh Jake pitches a nine inning,
- 51:05Speaker 2: complete game shutout. I think it was a four hitter.
- 51:08Speaker 2: It might have been a two four hit or whatever.
- 51:09Speaker 2: But we won eight nothing. So I got a lot
- 51:12Speaker 2: of crap because they did not pull him out when
- 51:14Speaker 2: we started leading eight nothing in that game. We were
- 51:16Speaker 2: it was a closer game, I think seventh or eighth inning,
- 51:18Speaker 2: we scored several runs and it eventually made it eight
- 51:21Speaker 2: nothing going into the ninth inning. I think he had
- 51:23Speaker 2: like that, right aroun one hundred and ten pitches easy
- 51:26Speaker 2: to pull him at that point. The thing that I
- 51:28Speaker 2: learned as a minor league coach, I thought, instructor, when
- 51:32Speaker 2: the dude walks off the mount with a complete game shutout,
- 51:34Speaker 2: changes them, changes them. And I thought, and I thought,
- 51:38Speaker 2: within within limits, let him go back out there. I
- 51:41Speaker 2: think he ended up with nine innings, twenty four shutout
- 51:46Speaker 2: and very limited number of hits.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Well, a both lot of confidence.
- 51:49Speaker 2: That's it. I mean, you mine once another one and
- 51:53Speaker 2: mine once stretched. How's a difficult time going back to
- 51:56Speaker 2: its original form? So the once you stretch your mind
- 51:58Speaker 2: to nine innings and I like this, it's a drug.
- 52:01Speaker 2: I want to do this all the time. I got
- 52:02Speaker 2: a lot of craft from the front office, quite frankly
- 52:04Speaker 2: about that. I love that. Why did you Why did
- 52:05Speaker 2: you pull him after I gave him the exact reason
- 52:08Speaker 2: I'm telling you right now. I can remember calling Charlie
- 52:10Speaker 2: pitching a complete game and palm springs and whatever the
- 52:13Speaker 2: year that was. I'm the roving instructor, David holridch same thing.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Guys you've never heard about. But it definitely enhanced their
- 52:20Speaker 2: their minor league careers at that point. But so when
- 52:24Speaker 2: he gets to the playoff game in Pittsburgh, Jack's done
- 52:27Speaker 2: that before. Why do I want to go?
- 52:29Speaker 3: No doubt in his mind.
- 52:30Speaker 1: He's tweeting, He's tweeting, I don't know if you saw
- 52:32Speaker 1: those like there because Pittsburgh was loud. I mean that
- 52:35Speaker 1: place when when Pad he made the air and there's
- 52:37Speaker 1: basis I couldn't even I couldn't hear myself breathe there.
- 52:41Speaker 1: I mean it was lit and they were they were nasty.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Pennsylvania all black.
- 52:46Speaker 1: The whole stadium was black.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:49Speaker 1: And he's tweet before. It doesn't matter, it doesn't he
- 52:51Speaker 1: just goes out there. They try to hit him.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Tony Watson, Yeah, I remember that, yees little clear, right,
- 52:56Speaker 2: that's right.
- 52:56Speaker 1: That that too was another. That celebration after that was
- 52:59Speaker 1: like two hours.
- 53:00Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, I remember the war.
- 53:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and we beat the Cardinals, who were the gold standard.
- 53:10Speaker 2: That's right.
- 53:10Speaker 3: That was a big one.
- 53:11Speaker 2: R We had to take it from that's that. You
- 53:13Speaker 2: have to take it. Take it from them, and we
- 53:15Speaker 2: did because we didn't beat our ass. That's right. At
- 53:18Speaker 2: the beginning of the year, the games we lost in
- 53:20Speaker 2: Saint Louis, we didn't know how to win yet, that's right.
- 53:21Speaker 1: That's because we were were winning. And then they came
- 53:23Speaker 1: back and it was like these motherfuckers exactly. And then
- 53:26Speaker 1: I take the ball back, I said, I remember the coaches.
- 53:29Speaker 1: He's always come over to the weight room. Uh, hey, Ras,
- 53:33Speaker 1: what's up man?
- 53:33Speaker 2: How are you? The other Cardinal coaches, we started beating them.
- 53:36Speaker 2: They never saw that, never that beautiful thing, that's right.
- 53:41Speaker 2: Exactly right. That's but I remember the game in Pittsburgh.
- 53:44Speaker 2: My god, but it was one of the more we
- 53:46Speaker 2: play some almost perfect games, like in sixteen against the Dodgers,
- 53:50Speaker 2: when the clincher against the Dodgers Kyle Hendrick, that's like
- 53:53Speaker 2: almost a perfect game. That was like a perfect baseball game.
- 53:56Speaker 2: But that game in Pittsburgh, that really did put us
- 54:00Speaker 2: in a different stratosphere. Ye absolutely, I.
- 54:02Speaker 3: Remember how loud it got. We made one air in
- 54:04Speaker 3: that basis load of membory that and so.
- 54:06Speaker 1: I was saying double and you were like, whoa, I
- 54:11Speaker 1: was seeing stars stars. I never that was my first
- 54:14Speaker 1: time in the playoffs, the first game, I'm like, what dozing?
- 54:18Speaker 1: So in twenty fifteen, we beat the Cardinals, we roll
- 54:24Speaker 1: into the Mets, I'm fully convinced that we're winning the
- 54:26Speaker 1: World Series. That's that's first time winning our chemistry. And
- 54:31Speaker 1: we run into the bus saw of that gauntlet of
- 54:33Speaker 1: a pitching staf We get swept, heartbreak, did everything we could.
- 54:37Speaker 1: The magician, I think jack Hammer Magic was great, jack Hamer,
- 54:44Speaker 1: but like we left that feeling like I was heartbroken.
- 54:48Speaker 1: We come into sixteen and it was like we were
- 54:50Speaker 1: already the World Series.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Champions.
- 54:52Speaker 1: I felt that. I don't know if anyone else, I
- 54:54Speaker 1: feel like everyone that was the way. It was the
- 54:56Speaker 1: best camp I've ever had. All the skits that my
- 55:00Speaker 1: wife thank you, but.
- 55:03Speaker 2: In the back of it, that's a whole other show
- 55:05Speaker 2: in the back of the band.
- 55:06Speaker 1: But it was just everything was like so in flow.
- 55:12Speaker 1: Guys were doing their job. We knew what it took,
- 55:14Speaker 1: we were determined, we were hungry, and we go into
- 55:18Speaker 1: that season. We get off to this insane start. Right
- 55:22Speaker 1: what the third game, fourth game, Shoreber goes down, yea
- 55:26Speaker 1: huge blow, like devastating because he was a dog and
- 55:30Speaker 1: he was one of our guys. And as early as
- 55:33Speaker 1: Lackie's first start, the Diamondbacks put up what five or
- 55:36Speaker 1: six runs off of them in the first and we
- 55:37Speaker 1: just boat raced them exactly and it was like, we
- 55:41Speaker 1: can't be beat. It was insane that that start to
- 55:44Speaker 1: that season.
- 55:45Speaker 3: But that's where that's where it embraced.
- 55:46Speaker 1: The target came.
- 55:47Speaker 2: Man.
- 55:47Speaker 3: I thought, like, you know you, you had to kind
- 55:50Speaker 3: of marinate over that all off season, and there's so
- 55:53Speaker 3: many things that came from that that I still that
- 55:56Speaker 3: are kind of in my soul as a as a
- 55:58Speaker 3: baseball guy. It's like, you know, having the target on
- 56:01Speaker 3: your back is a good thing, and you know, just
- 56:04Speaker 3: know we're not perfect, right, Like it's and process and
- 56:08Speaker 3: the things that built us as a championship team with
- 56:11Speaker 3: the hunger of getting so close and losing the year before,
- 56:15Speaker 3: the process is fearless, constantly reduced, like the things that
- 56:18Speaker 3: you had on the Embrace the Target shirt in spring training.
- 56:22Speaker 3: Like all that's a culmination of the culture we talked
- 56:24Speaker 3: about earlier, going into a team that had a lot
- 56:27Speaker 3: of young guys but in a lot of expectations.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's kind of interesting, man, because that all happened.
- 56:32Speaker 2: That started in the winter meetings after the twenty fifteen season.
- 56:36Speaker 2: Might have been in San Diego. I'm not sure the
- 56:38Speaker 2: winter meetings were at the time. However, you remember the
- 56:40Speaker 2: manager gaggle. Everybody gets in front of the manager and
- 56:43Speaker 2: they start firing questions. Now, we have not won anything
- 56:45Speaker 2: since nineteen oh eight, and all of a sudden, now
- 56:51Speaker 2: you're being picked to win the World Series? Right, how
- 56:53Speaker 2: does that happen? So I remember we're there and I'm
- 56:55Speaker 2: getting all this stuff fired at me, and I did
- 56:57Speaker 2: not ruminate. I didn't think about this at all. But
- 57:00Speaker 2: all of a sudden, I just said, we just need
- 57:01Speaker 2: to embrace the target. That's how it came out. I
- 57:04Speaker 2: was being pressed against the wall. Hey, we just got
- 57:06Speaker 2: to embrace the target. And then from that all this
- 57:08Speaker 2: other stuff flowed out of that. That's exactly what happened.
- 57:12Speaker 2: But I do I've always had the mindset. I like
- 57:16Speaker 2: the word pressure a lot. I like the word expectations
- 57:19Speaker 2: a lot, not a little bit a lot, because whatever
- 57:22Speaker 2: you're doing, if you do not have pressure and expectations
- 57:26Speaker 2: apply to it, why do it? I mean, what am
- 57:28Speaker 2: I doing here? Even if you play golf, you want
- 57:30Speaker 2: at least a quarter?
- 57:31Speaker 3: You know, you said that in spring training, you said, guys,
- 57:33Speaker 3: the expectations are a good thing. Like, think about that.
- 57:35Speaker 3: You've said that and are a little out there on.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Those stretch feet. YEA, yeah it is. It's a good thing.
- 57:40Speaker 2: And I think too many times people run away from
- 57:42Speaker 2: those words and they see them as being a negative
- 57:44Speaker 2: or ominous, And I honestly believe it's completely the opportit
- 57:48Speaker 2: to think about it. And you just talked about the
- 57:51Speaker 2: most disappointing time you ever had was after the twenty
- 57:53Speaker 2: fifteen season, and that totally raised your level of expectation
- 57:58Speaker 2: the next year, and you ran right toward that and
- 58:02Speaker 2: whole thing, that whole shirt that we that I built
- 58:03Speaker 2: up on that that took me some time. That was
- 58:05Speaker 2: done on my iPad, and I wanted, I don't know why,
- 58:08Speaker 2: but I do things like that once in a while.
- 58:10Speaker 2: How could I make the point started with like nine
- 58:12Speaker 2: equals eight here with the Rays in two thousand and eight,
- 58:15Speaker 2: I did that, even like in nineteen eighty six or seven,
- 58:19Speaker 2: I had a shirt for the boys in minor league
- 58:21Speaker 2: and the minor league camp. Every day counts, So that's
- 58:24Speaker 2: where it begins.
- 58:24Speaker 3: This one had together and then after that was nine
- 58:28Speaker 3: is one.
- 58:28Speaker 2: That's right, that's right, that's right, that's right. And that
- 58:31Speaker 2: was from that was from That line was from Kendrivisa.
- 58:34Speaker 2: Because I always showed all my stuff to Kenny. So
- 58:37Speaker 2: Kenny I was living in Long Beach too, and Kenny
- 58:40Speaker 2: was right down the street. I would run all my
- 58:41Speaker 2: stuff by the dirt bags before I said Kenny was
- 58:44Speaker 2: set up a meeting. I'd go into the clubhouse of
- 58:46Speaker 2: locker room with the Long Beach State and I would
- 58:49Speaker 2: run my spring training stuff these guys just to practice
- 58:53Speaker 2: rep Yeah, a little prep. That's it. And then Kenny
- 58:55Speaker 2: would always Kenny didn't like the processes frills, he didn't
- 58:59Speaker 2: get it at first, argued about that, and I was
- 59:01Speaker 2: just trying to tell them the process, wax emotion. It's
- 59:03Speaker 2: great if you if you stick to the process, you
- 59:06Speaker 2: could you do anything because you just you just stay
- 59:09Speaker 2: with this, this, this and this, and I don't feel anxiety, emotion, eagerness.
- 59:14Speaker 2: I don't feel any of that. I just I stick
- 59:16Speaker 2: with the process. So that was that was that part
- 59:18Speaker 2: of it. And then you know the parts of the
- 59:22Speaker 2: little ancillary things on the outside of it, you know,
- 59:25Speaker 2: just keeping yourself together. There's something there about uh coach Walsh,
- 59:29Speaker 2: Walsh with these forty nine ers. Was in there a
- 59:32Speaker 2: guy by named Welch with ge uh change before you
- 59:35Speaker 2: have to. I think all these different things are involved
- 59:38Speaker 2: in that, all the things I thought, Yeah, you know,
- 59:40Speaker 2: I just tried to encompass it in this big circle
- 59:42Speaker 2: with a narrow through. That was that was the target.
- 59:44Speaker 2: That was like that weird little aari But anyway, that
- 59:47Speaker 2: was me on an iPad trying to make sense because
- 59:50Speaker 2: how do I sell this to the team. That was
- 59:52Speaker 2: always my thing. All these different things I did in
- 59:55Speaker 2: spring training. With those meetings, I wanted to make it
- 59:57Speaker 2: interesting for you guys, and I wanted to get the
- 59:59Speaker 2: point cross it. Wanted something to hold your attention, and
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: even right down to the paintings that occurred later. And
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: also those paintings were for me, hopefully to attract young fans,
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: like kids that really weren't at the base. Well that's
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: kind of a cool painting. I mean, so all these
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: things had a purpose, and yeah, that was that was everything.
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: Everything had a purpose that I was doing. And there
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: was a lot of pressure on me in a good
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: way because I didn't want to disappoint I had I
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: had to try to outdo myself every year. That's why
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: I looked at that was my that was my edict
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: to myself do better than you did last year. That
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: was it, and that's what I tried to do.
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: We certainly didn't disappoint, Thank you the greatest second to
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Frank Chance.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: But Frank's got me two of them, two of them.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: Yeah, well we got two rings. We got to think
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: for average.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: That's why we do have to.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: We boat raced all year. We had a little blunt
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: before they all start, which was virtually nothing in the
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: grand scheme of how I remember you saying, though, this
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: is what happens when you get off to such a
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: good start, you have room for error. And then we
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: kind of went on cruise control and then September, I
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: feel like the team ramped it back up and our
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: first our playoff journey was not easy. We have the
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: even year of the Giants, which is a real was
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: a real thing, and thank god we came back in
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: game four because we did not want to see Cuato again.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: That's in game five, right, and a lot happened in
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: that series. Then we go and I'll see us where
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: we were talking about the move that you went and
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: with you pinch it al Mora and then they brought
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: him Blant and then you pinch it Maggie knowing that
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Niggy just got a courtizone shot, right?
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Did you know that? I did not know that, thank god,
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: would have mattered.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: I remember seeing that that. That to me was like
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: one of the like the chess played there. You know,
- 1:01:50Speaker 3: there's things as a player every once in a while,
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: I was like, wow, our manager's man.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: Well, did you know who would we pinch it for?
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: Originally with do you yeah? Of course you do a
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: roll this chat. We brought Champion earlier in that game,
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: and he was holding everything down and I moved them.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: I double switched to the point I double switched to
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: the point where I thought he had never come up.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: And then he came up, and the freaking bases are loaded.
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: So I'm not gonna let Chappie hit right there. So
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: it took a shot. And then yes, you have to
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: know in advance that if I send the right We
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: did the same thing against the Giants when when we
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: beat him in that fourth game. But anyway, you got
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: to know that if they do this, we're going to
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: do that now blind if you remember, it was also
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: kind of a reverse split guy. He had this that
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: cutter slider that came out on the left el and
- 1:02:32Speaker 2: he gets to an O two count, and that might
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: be one of the loudest home runs that I mean,
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: off the bat that I think I've ever heard.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: I remember, I looking back, I remember Maggie on so
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: much off speed late in the year. Whether he would like,
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: you know, I just remember that vividly when he hit
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: that home run, I'm like, this slider is going to
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: go right into his But you know it did. Thoughts,
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: it did freaking he crushed that ball.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: It was so loud. But yeah, that was so. I mean, listen,
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: I'm debating because, like I said, you double switch him.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: I think we moved them eight hitters away from where
- 1:03:01Speaker 2: the leader piter was going to be. So that's that's sake.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: We should be able to score some runs by then
- 1:03:06Speaker 2: then I could actually leave them in if we get
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: to that point. But sometimes the math doesn't work out.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: And that's exactly what happened. And that's because I did
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: not want to take a roll this out of the game,
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: but we had to do it at that point, and
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: then you have to rely on the other dudes. But
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: that was a big moment and as well as saying
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: Game four against the Giants, to me, that was the
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: World Series.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: How hard is it looking back now when you're in
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: that moment, you know, the double switches in the National
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: League where it's a mastermind of the dude, it was
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: so good? Or was it just because you love I
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: remember when you came over here. I love the National League?
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: The better it is much better, that's right. So but
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: you're in that moment where NLCS where one hundred and
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: eight years where we win that series for one of
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: the World Series. I've been there in what's sixty plus years.
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: Making those decisions in the heat of the moment is
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: not be easy.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: Well it's not easy, but you think about them in advance.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: I mean, that's the whole thing. I mean, I, like
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: I said, I knew he moved the mate spots, and
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: then okay, I wasn't worried about it until I had
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: to start worrying about it, and then you have to
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: start playing it all the way out and then there's
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: like who's going to be the pinch it or if
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: in fact we're going to do that. So that was
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: the beauty of the Nationalague game. And everybody poop poos
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: that I'm here to tell you, man, anybody that says
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: it's just like a double switcher. But I mean there's
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: so many things that go on. I mean there's times
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: Davy really helped me out because sometimes I would do
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: some things that required a lot of movement and I
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: get lost. Sometimes Davy and Davey would like help me
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: out with putting it back together, because when you start
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: doing all the things we did, like moving guys pictures
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: to the outfield in the back and things like that,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: it can get kind of. But here's the thing though,
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: I loved it because I felt we could have an
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: advantage because if I know what I'm doing with that,
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: then that works as an advantage for us versus the
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: group that's not as bold, you know, doing something. You
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: got to be bold to do those things. And again,
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: if you're losing Sky's limit, do whatever you want. If
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: you're tired or winning, it becomes more difficult. And that's
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: what you We were up by a run.
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: Yeah, that's difficult to take your clothes.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: That's right. Just trained it for that's right.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: That's we got Chapman at that deadline. It was like
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: just another shot of confidence.
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: That's group.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: I've been on teams for thirteen fourteen years and there
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: was one time at the deadline that I felt like
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: as a player. We won the deadline and I was
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: two and sixteen. Yeah, we traded for Chappy. We went
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: out and got the best reliever on the market to
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: solidify already a really deep backend, bultit and it was like, holy.
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: Shit, and I felt the same way. The only other
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: time I felt that way was twenty thirteen the Red Sox.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: We won and they went out and got Jake pe
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: who at the time was the best starter at that
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: all part. You know, when your front office implants like
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: we know what you need and we're gonna go get
- 1:05:42Speaker 3: it for you. That's another part of like I think,
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: winning organizations that just goes unnoticed a lot of the
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: times because people play the long game. In the safe game,
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: you only have so often, right you don't I have
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: so often to.
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Go for it. It's all about the long game anywhere. Man,
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: I don't even know that. Everybody's got a four or
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: five year plan and nobody ever wins. I mean, I
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: don't get it. I don't understand all that stuff. I
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: mean I understand what they're doing, but I don't understand
- 1:06:04Speaker 2: why they do it. Yeah, THEO made it. Then they
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: made a great move on that. YEA, well we don't.
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: We don't do that without all that, without how much
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: And I mean, listen, I you know, if you remember
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: at that time, I think Stropie got hurt right at
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: the end of that sea is that when he know
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: that's that when he hurt his knee. But he didtase
- 1:06:21Speaker 2: coming face. He did something right, so and Strophie was
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: out of the mix a little bit. Hector was like
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: not as good because he'd been a little bit impacted
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: by Chapman being there.
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: Well, I thought, I thought, that's the one thing that
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: you look back on, and you know, we got Chappy
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: and then kind of some of our horses that had
- 1:06:37Speaker 3: driven us got kind of sideline. And from a manager's perspective,
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: like I think I leaned a lot into veterans.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Like safety for the veterans for me.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: But you really did a nice job of like Montgomery
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: and c. J.
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: Edwards and like Gris.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: Guys, remember remember that, remember that getting out of that
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: basis loaded jam? What what is that when you see
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: that as that that your gut, that your your eyes,
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: you're right eyes eyes.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: I think I'm for me, I think it's my eyeballs.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: And listen, I I'm so grateful, like I said, or
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: I think I said it earlier, that it took me
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: so long to become a major league manager. I scout
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: it for a long time, and I still consider I
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: still consider the most important thing I've ever done in
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: order to become a big league manager successfully would be
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: to have been a scout, because I think I could
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: see talent before talent becomes talent sometimes, so Carl Edwards.
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: I mean, my god, I mean I love that boy. Yeah,
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: it was devastating. And then I mean, how about Montgomery.
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: I mean, and I didn't realize it at the time,
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: but of course bors he did. The last side of
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: the World Series, Martinez was sitting like one ten against
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: Lieutenant curveballs. So he's just feeding Mickey curveball.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: Curving that you know right exactly, it's theirs. It had
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: not seen one at batanding.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: And we know that that's what he did. That's what
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: our that's what I'm sorry. Guys were prepared. You're talking
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: about process and preparation, like everybody was on board doing
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: their job at that moment, and.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: So you have you have that.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: I thought it was a genius too, because Rajie was
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: going to steal that bad.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: I couldn't believe you didn't go.
- 1:08:06Speaker 3: I couldn't believe. I was like, he's going right.
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: I for for a first pitch, I thought he was
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: going I think the left.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: He scared him a little bit. You're right, just a
- 1:08:13Speaker 3: little bit. You're a little bit harder. So like probably
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: something that you don't equate for actually helps out because
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: I'm thinking, well, you bring him in before that was
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: like well, Raji's fixing steel. He's a second now Base
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: ties it out.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: CJ wasn't good at holding runners on either.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: No, no, no, no no.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: What was your process? Like, what are you telling your
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: staff going into the World Series where all this pressure
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: on journey of your career. It's real, right, we did
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: a great job at quieting it, but you're the lead
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: bull with your with your coach. Is it business as usual?
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: Is it? Don't change your thing, don't change your thing,
- 1:08:46Speaker 2: No more meetings, don't get try to get smarter. Uh,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: just just do what we've been doing all year. I
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: think that's the trap. Teams that try to get smarter,
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: add more information, We're scott to reports, more people in
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: the clubhouse, more more data, and uh at analysts coming
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: downstairs to try to help you out. I ran into
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: it with the late nineteen ninety Angels, which we didn't
- 1:09:06Speaker 2: never really got anywhere. But we get closer to the
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: playoffs at the end of the year, and all of
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: a sudden, everybody beat it. The skint of reports that
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: get bigger, giving guys more information.
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: More people around.
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Oh my god, It's like, are you kidding me? It's
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: the exact opposite. Sure, it's less info, it's less people around,
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: it's it's status quo as much as you possibly can.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: If you remember, I didn't take VP one time in
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: because I didn't want to go out to the soap opera.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: That's that's finny bkab and I think that's two. We
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: just stayed in. You guys did all right well, but
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: that's because of back you gave us. We had that
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: level of confidence that we can do that. There's a
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: lot of guys that I feel like they have.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: To go and do it. See, that's just that's just
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: that's the classic cover my ass situation. That is has
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: nothing to do with anything you know or believe. That's
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: covering my butt. That's all that is. All. This choreography
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: before the games is also a cover of my butt situation.
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: I want listen, if somebody needs ex work, I'm I'm there.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: I'll be the first guy out there. I want them,
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: I want them out there. But if you don't necessarily
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: need early work or don't need it every day, an
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: athlete that is both mentally and physically not tired is
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: much better than all these different work that you want
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: to put out there that you're going to get a
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: mentally or physically exhausted. They don't realize people that really
- 1:10:32Speaker 2: haven't done it. You can't hold that many thoughts. You
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: can't hold that many thoughts. Too simple better, I'd write,
- 1:10:38Speaker 2: I don't want you holding that many thoughts. I can't
- 1:10:41Speaker 2: hold that many thoughts. Although I will say this, and
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: I've always said this, you could inundate the staff with
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: as much intel as you possibly want, but then it's
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: up to the staff to give you the nuggets that
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: we think are necessary. Like bors he's Bor's. He's better
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: than any analytical staff there is to prepare a game
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: plan on.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: Any I used to have Borsey after every year Mike
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: started catching break me down fully what I wasn't because
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: it's so hard as everyday player realized where you're missing
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: when you're When year Freddie Freeman told me, he was like, hey,
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: we don't play you the rest of this year, and
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: I don't think we're going to see each other in
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: the playoffs. And he goes, you're not swinging at first
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: pitch breaking balls, and I'm like, what, I didn't know
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: that I get traded. It's twenty twenty one. I get
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: traded in the playoffs that year first pitch breaking ball
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: from Evaldi. I'm aware of this now, Gomer and the wild.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Card with the Yankees.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: Information is powerful, it's crazy.
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: But sometimes you just don't know. And then of course
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: when you have people that you trust that tell you
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: these things. But if you don't trust them and they
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: tell you these things, you're.
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: Like, that's right, get out of it. It's it's not
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: it's useless.
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: At that point, Game seven start started talking.
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: I do want to start talking the World Series?
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: How special was that?
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: My god? Just yeah, you'd been throughing for with the
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: race I did with the Rays, then the Angels. So
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: we went with the Angels in two thousand and two,
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: but I was the bench coach, raise as a manager,
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: and that was think about it. That team, I think
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: when seventy games year before, you know, seventy I think
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: maybe sixteen, I don't even know. But then you go
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: and you we didn't win the division. We were the
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: wildcard team, but you end up playing the Phillies in
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: the World Series. We beat the Red Sox, so you
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: remember the ground ball. I mean we were up three
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: to one in that and you guys came back games.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: That was eight.
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: We talked about the first time we met and we
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: had the same agent going through my lefting tickets young Buck, Yeah,
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: left in tickets.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I was with the Red Sox though, so I was
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: happy they won Game six. But we're there, yeah, and
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: we are down three to one. Yeah, And I was like, no,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: this ain't happening because last year we were down three
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: when it was like our win was out of the sales.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: But this year we last year we went in and
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: like we were talking and all this stuff and what
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: we leave in the clubhouse, we do if we just
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: won game five, right, because that was a gauntlet of
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: a game.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: What was your take on? I had a pizza party
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: that night. My kids were in town. I had pizza
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: at the I was living right off Lake Shore. We
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: had a big room downstairs. I went at the I
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: don't know if I rented. We just got it it all.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: My kids were there, A bunch of my mom was there.
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: Pizza party. I really felt good. I felt our pitchings
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: was lined up properly for the for the games in Cleveland.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: I did. I never lost faith, absolutely not. We That
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: was Halloween. I wore a Halloween outfit on the bus.
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: It was like a suit with a bunch of daggers,
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: and I wanted to try to keep it as normal
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: as you possibly can. That's that's always been my method.
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: When you when you when you, when you stop being,
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: get a normal outside your normal pass that's what people
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: as I tend to go up. So my my main
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: objective is always to keep it as real as you
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: possibly can. But I never I never lost faith. I
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: never did. I Arieta and Kyle, I felt good.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: I felt lesser.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: Game five too, Chapman came in. I think in like
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: the seventh, there was no what else do you do? Yeah,
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: there's no Game six, there's no fun.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: So that was the one thing. I think the only
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: thing I ever questioned was leaving him in to go
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: out in the ninth in game six, right, I just
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: hit the homer, that's right, And I remember the dugout.
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: Like can we get Travis Wooden? Like yeah?
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: And he went back out.
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: I think he looked a gun four straight pictures out
- 1:14:30Speaker 2: of him and I took him out.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: That I think that was the only time because right
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: as a player, I would always I would always ask
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: you questions because I wanted to know like and I
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: felt like I knew you perfectly.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: No you're right, I mean I was. I was torn
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: on that. When I had I already had talked to
- 1:14:47Speaker 2: I think Boss about getting somebody else up in case
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: something happening scored a bunch of runs. It was in
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: my head. The problem with me was that I've been
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: burning Cleveland in the past. In that particular bar I
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: had been. I mean just with the Angels. I think
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: we were leading like nine to one or nine to two,
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: either the eighth or ninth any with personal in the
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: game and lost the game. So it's just stupid stuff
- 1:15:09Speaker 2: like that. And but it worked out. But there's no game.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: There's no game seven if you don't win game six,
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: that kind of thing. Also, so it's I can't defend
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: my choice right there. It worked out fine, But I
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: knew watching Chappie thwar to the first hitter, get him out,
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: get him out, he was like he was pissed. He
- 1:15:26Speaker 2: was pissed too, I thought he was, or yeah.
- 1:15:30Speaker 3: Six or yeah, it was like you run Homer separated, right,
- 1:15:32Speaker 3: that was.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: A separator, right, but but no, But the point was
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: I bought him in because Lindor was hitting, and we
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: got out of a big situation with Lindor in that game.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: And again, if you don't win that, you don't you
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: don't play game seven.
- 1:15:46Speaker 3: So well, and we I talked about going back to
- 1:15:50Speaker 3: the little bit that I got to manage is like
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: you get burned from a game, you know, like those
- 1:15:55Speaker 3: games that somebody comes back.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: My memory is too good.
- 1:15:58Speaker 3: It sticks, It sticks, no doubt time out of times,
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: like yeah, this manager was burned because of this or that,
- 1:16:04Speaker 3: like they start telling stories about because you get like
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: you think it. You can't take any for granted, and
- 1:16:09Speaker 3: then the World Series is going to be No I
- 1:16:11Speaker 3: want the guy out there throwing a hundred Okay, how
- 1:16:12Speaker 3: much were up?
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: I know that was That's the one thing I agree,
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: and I've actually said that publicly that that's the one
- 1:16:18Speaker 2: thing that I knew was wrong. I did it and
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: then but we rectified it because he needed to pitch
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: the next day obviously.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Yea game in game seven? Did we do a shot
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: before Game seven? Did the whole staff?
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: I think we did. Yeah?
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: Yeah, so we all pregame do our shot toasts last
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: game of the season. Right, Well, you guys you told me, yeah,
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: you guys had a good conversation.
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: Yeah, great conversation.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but what about what happened.
- 1:16:44Speaker 3: Your plan was. It's like you never really I hadn't
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: been in your office much all year, and you know,
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: you're always kind of down. You you keep things so
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: close to the vest as far as like, really, what
- 1:16:55Speaker 3: you're going to do in a game. And you told me, hey,
- 1:16:57Speaker 3: you're coming in with Johnny, I don't know when the
- 1:16:58Speaker 3: next the next day, and then uh remember going down
- 1:17:02Speaker 3: in a bullpen and how crazy that was. And then
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: I came in early, not knowing what's going on. We
- 1:17:06Speaker 3: had a me you and BOS had that conversation about
- 1:17:09Speaker 3: how's he look and I remember saying, uh, like, he
- 1:17:13Speaker 3: looks great, but I don't know how many bullets he's
- 1:17:15Speaker 3: got it right? He was firing I've never seen.
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: You said, is as good as you've seen him throw
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: the baseball? Something that yeah, he was, he was.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: He was just wanted to go in the game.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: That was right. And I didn't even consider that right right,
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: but I should have. But no, that's what you told me.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: You told me how good he was. Yeah, and I
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: trusted and you.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: Trust your players, beauty.
- 1:17:35Speaker 3: But that we talked earlier, like you're just you. You
- 1:17:39Speaker 3: didn't go in your office with an idea and you
- 1:17:41Speaker 3: not go I love it. You know what I mean,
- 1:17:43Speaker 3: Let's do it. I mean Lester taking me out of
- 1:17:46Speaker 3: the game. He told the story about you guys taking
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: me out.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:17:49Speaker 3: He just came in your office like, I love it,
- 1:17:51Speaker 3: let's do it.
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: I was not thinking about that. Yeah, you know that
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: was all John Johnny.
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: He told me that that's like super cool. But I
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: remember when you took Kyle out. I'd never Kyle's stoic
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: right zen Master, he had his glove in his mouth.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: I was fucking pitching around him because he pitched around
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: walks Intanna faced kidness because he kind of owned he
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: thought he owned kidness, and we.
- 1:18:14Speaker 3: Love the kidness matchup. I remember talking about.
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: Yeah, and that was the first time I ever heard
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: emotion from Hendricks. And now looking back with experience ten
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: years later, it's like, if if Hendricks knew that you
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: may have pulled him, he would have pitched to Santana differently,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: because it was like, all if I, if I don't
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: get him out, then he starts maybe pitching a little scared, right,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: So it's maybe in the moment you're like, no, he
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: should have pitched the kidness right, But it's like all
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: these things that pictures. When pitchers get that hundred pitch mark,
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: now they're pitched differently because if I don't get this guy,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: if they're going batter to batter. So you look back
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: on it with more wisdom and it's like, thank God,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: he didn't know the whole thing that he was on
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: a pitch.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: The building was precipitated not by Kipness, but it was
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: by Lindor because we talked about Johnny and not bringing
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: Johnny to a dirty inning. I did not consider Santana
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: on first base only with two ounces of dirty inning.
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: I just did. Yeah, I didn't, That was not my
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: interpretation of that. But if Kidness gets on and Santana's on,
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: that's two guys on with two outs, and that is
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: dirty and that I did not want to bring Johnny
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: into that. So it was almost like I mentally my
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: hand was forced to do what I did when I
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: did it because I did not want to have Johnny
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: on that out there with multiple runners, and I liked
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: a lot the Kidness Johnny relationship. Johnny had warmed up.
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: That was the second time warming up already, so you'd
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: have sat down if he did not use him there
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: to warmed up the third time to bring him out
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: in the game, and at that point it worked out.
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: If he would have made a good throw, he almost killed.
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: There was a swinging bot and the defensive guy may
- 1:19:47Speaker 3: have shown his leg. No, no, I mean I'm talking
- 1:19:52Speaker 3: about I like, I'm not in there for my bat.
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: And then there were Johnny that you.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: Hit the big home limit I did. It's not about
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: you though, It's.
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: Not about me. But no, I mean it was a
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: swinging bump from getting this. We had him two and
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: I threw it away and then Johnny knows. I remember
- 1:20:06Speaker 3: the Scalle report talking about Boresy no strike breaking balls
- 1:20:08Speaker 3: to Lindor. So he shakes the breaking ball throws. I
- 1:20:12Speaker 3: got thirty foot, its off my mask. I trip over
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: my leg. You know, two runs going right?
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: Wait a minute, what happens the game?
- 1:20:17Speaker 3: We just two back in?
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: I was it was.
- 1:20:20Speaker 3: It was nuts.
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: But so that's the people don't understand that the move
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: was made on uh the not dirty inning. If if
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: Kyle doesn't get out Kipness, then now it is bad.
- 1:20:31Speaker 2: But I do want to lefty on Lindor. Yeah, I
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: want him hitting right handed. So there's a lot going
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: on right there.
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: And Johnny up a third ten. That's the other thing
- 1:20:38Speaker 3: we talked about. Yeah, he's firing bullets and been up twice.
- 1:20:41Speaker 3: I probably can't get him back up.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: And that's another thing. It's all it's very that's that's
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: a really difficult jigs up. And believe me, I'm thinking
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: all this stuff in that nano second. It's not like, oh,
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: it after us. It was. It was all going on now.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: We had already wounded up Montgomery earlier in the game
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: a little bit, I think early on, because if you remember,
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: Kyle was being hit around a little bit earlier before
- 1:20:59Speaker 2: that some art contact. But then again, if you bring
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: Kyle in that particular situation, I mean Montgomery Mikey, then
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: Mikey doesn't get the last out of the game. I mean,
- 1:21:08Speaker 2: it's just like the world, the world would happen. Yeah,
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: it's just how the world played out. So I'm not
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: a revisionist historian. How it happened is how it happened.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: That was real. So we could you could do all
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: the what ifs and how about whatever. It's exactly a
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: dock down buy stuff.
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: I say this with all due respects. I can say
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: whatever I want, right, that's right, that the fact that
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: that's right three days after we win the World Series
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: and the media is like, why would we they do that?
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: We just fucking wrote one hundred years how to pray
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: to a billion people, five million plus people, and there's
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: articles being written saying Joe should have did this, right,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: get the fuck out of here my language.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: No, not that. I mean that's what's done all the
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: time now, right. I mean that would have been like
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: normal pristandard procedure to get Kyle out in the fifth inning,
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: see and Kip this for the third time, that would
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: have been like because no one's even questioned exactly exactly
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: right going into that.
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: Season, Kyle was like third time through got hit a
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: little bit harder. Remember that.
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah it was, But it was only based on
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: what I'm telling you. It's just then the fact that
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: if Kipness gets on and I want Johnny on the door,
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: that would have been the dirty thing. I was not
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: looking for. That was so I was trying to get
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: ahead of that moment. Kip this with Johnny was a
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: really good matchup, and we got what we're looking for.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: It's just a tough play that that ball rolled out
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: farther than you thought, that's what I saw? Yeah, for sure,
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: it kept going, kept going away from you. Yeah, so
- 1:22:23Speaker 2: fucking he's a he's a brick.
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: I rushed the throat my hand. He grabbed me a
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: little bit when stretched a little more.
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: What about when ra hits the homer?
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: What what are you thinking?
- 1:22:35Speaker 2: I said to Davy, I said, who's up for his
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: next inning? That's the first thing that I went, man,
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: that for his next inning? Right, who's up for his
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: next inning? That's it? I mean I thought that. And
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: then the the more difficult part was who to send
- 1:22:48Speaker 2: out in the ninth inning? We sent out said, right,
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: the fact that Chappie got through the ninth amazing is
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: like its owns.
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: How many times have you seen a closer blow it
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: in the eighth?
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:22:57Speaker 3: I don't think Miggie gets enough credit. I agree with
- 1:22:59Speaker 3: the break like like I look back on, I was
- 1:23:03Speaker 3: calling all heaters because I didn't catch Chappie that much.
- 1:23:06Speaker 3: We would we would he would come in with Miggi.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: Or Contraras, and so I was like, we're catching scared.
- 1:23:13Speaker 3: Maybe, well, I knew the sky was said no sliders,
- 1:23:17Speaker 3: and then I didn't know the splitting wasn't really a
- 1:23:19Speaker 3: factor that year. So I just kept like, oh, it's
- 1:23:23Speaker 3: one hundred, he'll pop it up, and I did.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: He just went further than I wait, just to it
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: done into his bathroom.
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: Ye yeah, and I looked. I remember looking, he's she
- 1:23:30Speaker 3: was choking on the back like Corona. Yeah, well plug there.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: So Raj hits the home run. I'm at first saying this,
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: this fucking curse is real, like playing dirty numb, my
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: full body numb, and you're going.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: That is like, that's why I said, I asked David
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: that immediately.
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: I never I moved. I turned the page a lot
- 1:23:56Speaker 3: as a catcher that I just remember. I kept going
- 1:23:59Speaker 3: back to God, dang it like Eli, like you know,
- 1:24:02Speaker 3: like it took me a minute just to turn.
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: A page, like you hit the home run rain delay. Right,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: we're in there, Chappy just got traded. He's like he's
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: instantly one of our brothers. He's in there with tears
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: in his eyes. Right, feels so bad, and it's like,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: how can you feel bad?
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: Do you?
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: You've thrown forty innings postseason right a horse and then
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: comes out later with your story with your dad's hate
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: And was that a moment that just came out of
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: nowhere for you.
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: That's twice I've done that. My dad was in the
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: dugout for the two thousand and two when World Series
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: for the Angels. Also wow wow. My dad passed in
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: two thousand and two, so he died in April fifteen,
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: two thousand and two. So we're the Angels in the
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: World Series in two thousand and two. I had his
- 1:24:46Speaker 2: hat in my backpack, which it took to every ballpark.
- 1:24:50Speaker 2: So I ran upstairs in that game against the Giants
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: and I brought it down. I used to have that
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: little table set up in Anheim Stadium in the corner there,
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: and I put the hat underneath my book looking out
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: at the field. So he was been to two World
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: Series victories. So that time in Cleveland, I went up
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: there and I said, screwed. I put in the back
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: my my pants like your belt is. I stuffed it
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: down and there so I thought nobody would see it.
- 1:25:12Speaker 2: And I think I had the jacket on it at
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: that time, so I figured it was not going to
- 1:25:15Speaker 2: be seen, so I put it. I was during the rainelay, right, yeah,
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: went upstairs and rangewl and did that. That's right.
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: Was amazing? Was uh?
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: When during that rain delay. Well, I mean there was
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: tears in the weight room.
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: I don't I don't go there. I I just I
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: went upstairs. I wanted to see the weather map. How
- 1:25:32Speaker 2: long this is going to last?
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: Seven?
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: Jed was there, Jed Hoyer was up there, were looking
- 1:25:36Speaker 2: at the map. I can't remember exactly what I talked
- 1:25:39Speaker 2: to him about, but it's a it's a real It's
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: one of those, you know, obviously horrible moments. But you
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: guys did you guys did great. I mean, after that
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: meeting with with Jason, I walked out in the field
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: and I said, damn, I mean, you guys.
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: Look like ghosts and ghosts.
- 1:25:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but y'all look like the game was just get
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: ready to begin. That's that's I mean, the energy was
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: outstanding before was leading off. He walks by me and
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: it's like he's like this guy throws me to cut around.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: I'm not gonna you know, saw, and I'm like, I
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: was like rais in that sta. Remember we worked on
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: that during.
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Series was lost this year on a bad secondary lead.
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: That's right.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: We won arguably the Ones World series because of a.
- 1:26:21Speaker 3: Read that he stuff we had worked on.
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: Standards we did, We worked on that stuff. We were
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: protocol says, don't tag go halfway.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: That's right. I'm read it, and I think I think
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: Hyder was screaming from the attack of the bank.
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: Yeah, really good coaches, Yeah yeah, yeah, it's how did
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: you celebrate when the whole thing was done? What went
- 1:26:39Speaker 3: through your mind on that that last out?
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: I was exhausted. I mean, I thought, when you caught
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: the ball, I thought one and eight. That was my
- 1:26:45Speaker 2: first thought, and I thought of my my my dad
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: of course, and then my family. But also I get
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: really happy for the coaches. Don't take that wrong, because
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: it's really important for the coaches, you know, the salary
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: they make compared to what everybody else to make. So
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: because I was a coach, so I'm really happy for
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: the coaching staff that this is going to be really
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: benefit their family. I really that's one of the first
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: things I think about. And then of course I just
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: watch you guys through the dog pile out there, and
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: it's you know, it's fabulous. So it's really weird because
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: it's such an exhausting moment. I mean, to get to
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: that point, to get to the seventh game of the
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: World Series, after everything that the prepp for spring training,
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: spring training, regular season, playoffs on top of playoffs, on
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: top of playoffs, down games, three games to one, come back,
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: get in a position, win and then actually win it.
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: Like you're saying, there's nothing to be critical over that point,
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: it's it's just like there's so many ebbs and flows
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: to that moment, and everything somehow is to break your
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: way at the right moment. It just has to. You know,
- 1:27:42Speaker 2: the base there's good baseball luck and there's bad baseball luck.
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: So maybe the good baseball luck and nobody talks about
- 1:27:48Speaker 2: is the fact that they they the Indians took out
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: Coco Crisp for defensive purposes for Martinez. Had they not,
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: then he's hitting in that particular spot and much more
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: formidable hitter than Martin. So so when you start, you
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: start what if what if? That's what if? It is life?
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: It's life, I mean, what if what if such an
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: iconic world you win Tito Tito as a manager, historic
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: Hall of Fame manager as well.
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: Well.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: The Indians were sixty plus years, we're one hundred and
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: eight years. The fans were just so into it, everyone
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: was so happy we win. The celebration is just absolutely epic, right, Yeah,
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: and it changes our lives course whatever. Ten years later
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: we're talking about this reunion.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: It's going to get even more prominent as we moved
- 1:28:33Speaker 2: along the the the war, the way that the fables
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: waste being told. Twenty years from now, thirty years from that,
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: I was going to grow.
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: Yeah, hopefully.
- 1:28:43Speaker 3: Did you feel like it was harder looking back on
- 1:28:46Speaker 3: setting expectations and twenty fifteen of how you were changing
- 1:28:50Speaker 3: the culture and the winning ways or managing the expectations
- 1:28:55Speaker 3: in sixteen, I mean it was a year to Yeah, I.
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: Think you know, just the way you describe that, just
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: they go hand in hand, right, I mean you have
- 1:29:05Speaker 2: to set the expectations and then you have to manage them.
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: I say, when it comes down to managing expectations, I'm
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: more about setting them, you know, and I don't really
- 1:29:15Speaker 2: necessarily worry about managing them. I think that if you
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: set it up right and you got the right group,
- 1:29:19Speaker 2: and you know, you work your day properly kind of
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: takes care of itself, I think. I mean I never
- 1:29:25Speaker 2: I never really think about that phrase to manage my expectations,
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: but I do think about setting them up if.
- 1:29:32Speaker 3: It feels like there's a couple of times that we've
- 1:29:34Speaker 3: talked that of, like you just stay in the process.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: I do. I'm pretty good in a moment. I'm pretty
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: good present tense guy. There are certain times I'll get
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: I'll get outside of that process when you're tired a
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: little bit, you know, maybe something bad happening, You're just
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: your confidence might have taken a little bit of a hit.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: But for the most part, I'm able to get back there.
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: I don't I don't know how much of it's kenra
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: visit and all the training I did with Kenny, even
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: as a coach. I mean as a player though I
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: was playing quarterback when I was ten, right, my own
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: plays when you're ten years old, you know, So there's
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: something to be said for that. I mean, I actually
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: called my own plays when I was ten, and they
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: stay Trooper Eagles, State Trooper Eagles huddle. I'm calling the
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: plays and I ad audibles to call to. So what
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: does that mean when you're ten years old? How does
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: that play fifteen, twenty thirty years down the road. I
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: don't know, but I did. And I was a captain
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: on almost every team that I played on. If I wasn't,
- 1:30:23Speaker 2: so you always have this responsibility kind of thing, and
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: do you be both are probably the same way. So
- 1:30:28Speaker 2: how does that actually translate into being able to stay
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: in a moment accepting responsibility. The probably way to lead
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: for me is not through intimidation, but through in communication.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: That's the appropriate way to lead. And I think my
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: best dudes, and I've talked and talked about Bob Clear
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: in my book. Bob Clear was my guy with the Angels.
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: He was like the best baseball coach I've ever been around.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: And then coach Bob Root my backfield, my quarterback coach
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: at Loafiat College. This man, God, I just one of
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: the best communicators to me. And if I came off
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: the field and I did the right thing or to
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: call the right play and he validated it, my god,
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: did I get puffy, you know, because I just respected
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: him so much. Communication.
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: Think about think about in your time not only with
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: the Cubs. We'll talk about the Cubs in specific, how
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: many lives you've touched as far as fans, players, legacy.
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: There's things that you said that I said today about
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: what I took with me as a player that I
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: used my whole life. And it was like, and I
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: tell you this ten eleven years later and you remember
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: these things. Yeah, it's not the Ricky Bobby. I was
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: high when I said that, Like you you genuinely, you
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: genuinely remember because in that moment of my life, it
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: was the biggest like aha moment for me that I
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: learned and took with me. And there's hundreds of players
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: that you've probably touched or along your journey, right which
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: is just insane to think about. You know, when you
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: live a life, what do you want to leave behind
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: the legacy?
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: And it's like you're you're pushing me back to my
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: minor league days right now too, absolutely, because I mean
- 1:32:04Speaker 2: starting out as a minor league coach in nineteen eighty one,
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: I was twenty seven, Like I had Dicky Scholfield and
- 1:32:10Speaker 2: Devon White on my first team in Idaho Falls as
- 1:32:13Speaker 2: an example. And if I wrote down all the lists
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: of the guys, you do unbelievable that I that made
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: the really good major league players. And it is it's
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: it's it's ominous to think that the one thing because
- 1:32:26Speaker 2: but you never think about that. I never think about that.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: Ricky Lee Jones, songwriter, singer, she wrote, you never know
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: when you're making a memory.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: Yeah, you just never know when you're making a memory
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: or whenever you're making an impact, because I've never I
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: never evaluate myself that way. I don't. I really appreciate
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: what you guys are saying.
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: You've made an impact for us?
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: Can too?
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: You don't bring cah Ken? Yeah right, yeah, bring this
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: story ken, Ken.
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: I'll say as quick, can have me do a drill
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: in spring training, close my eyes, do my whole pregame
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: batting routine, like from the on deck circle to the box.
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: It times me.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: Yeah, He's like the elites get it within a second.
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: I got it within a second. He's like, you'll be
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: surprised how many guys go through their entire visualization process
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: and get it within like a second of when they
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: opened their eyes.
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: And I carried that with me for every whenever I
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: was in a rut, I would go through my process.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: I remember jumping on Aaron Judges back one time. Right,
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: oh yeah, you do that absolutely. I was all the
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: time about Ken and are you breathing?
- 1:33:28Speaker 3: Man?
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: Are you breathing? That's right?
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: And he would jump on my back if I was struggling.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Hey man, I gotta get on your back. You feel
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: the weight of the world get off your shoulder there,
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: and it's like these little things that just make the
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: biggest impact in lives, and you've certainly done that for me.
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: You've certainly done that for me. So this is like
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: I was, I'm so happy.
- 1:33:47Speaker 3: Look, this has been amazing. You've You've obviously impacted a lot,
- 1:33:50Speaker 3: and we're so thankful for how you impacted. This has
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: been really fun for us and we've got all year
- 1:33:55Speaker 3: to celebrate this. Any advice you would give Joe Madden
- 1:34:00Speaker 3: from you, you're talking a lot about minorly days to
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: now you're no longer managing and all the crazy impact
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: you've had in between, Like what advice would you give
- 1:34:10Speaker 3: to our baseball people that are listening or fans and
- 1:34:14Speaker 3: some of the stuff that's helped you out the most
- 1:34:16Speaker 3: that we can. Yeah, I mean we need one more
- 1:34:19Speaker 3: nugget from you.
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: Yeah. I actually put it on a T shirt once,
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: and I think the word comes out to authenticity. I mean, everybody,
- 1:34:29Speaker 2: everybody wants to be like everybody else. They're so we
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: have influencers everywhere right now, and of course I had
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: influencers too, no question, and watch the weight. I wear
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: white shoes when I play football because name of it whatever,
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: I wear bigger face mask. But at the end of
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: the day, don't run away from who you are and
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: what you believe in. And also know what you believe
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: in too. I mean, it's not that you can't be
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: you can't make adaptations or be flexible. You have to be,
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: but at the end of the day, just really know
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: what you believe in and put it out there. I
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: think to t times people will attempt to say what
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: they think somebody wants to hear. We've already kind of
- 1:35:04Speaker 2: covered this, but put out there with what you what
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: you truly believe in, and I think the respect you
- 1:35:11Speaker 2: get in return for that is greater that because even
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: if the person you're speaking with doesn't agree with what
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: you're saying, they'll probably listen to that and take it
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: to heart, and maybe you're gonna make an impact in
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: that authentic way, because if you if you choose to
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: not really be who you are or authentic, it's really
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: difficult to copy or put that fake thing out there
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: on a daily basis, which a lot of people do exactly.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: It's it's it's very transparent, right. So I just think
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: the word authenticity had never run away from it, and
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: and and authenticity cannot be manufactured. It's got to be organic. Yeah,
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: thank you. Love done, guys, You got.
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: Why such you guys look back.
- 1:36:01Speaker 2: Und H
