- 2:15Speaker 2: Welcome to the show now, West Virginia Attorney General JB. Mccusky.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Good morning, sir, Welcome to the show. Hello JB. Well
- 2:28Speaker 2: we have JB. He's there. I can hear the static
- 2:31Speaker 2: on the line. All right, Maybe maybe he took a
- 2:36Speaker 2: much more important phone call. I don't know what happened there,
- 2:41Speaker 2: did JB? So okay, so Ryan tells me he's still
- 2:45Speaker 2: on the line. He's just not talking to us right now.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I know he is obviously. Okay, Now he's not on
- 2:51Speaker 2: the line anymore. So we are going to try to
- 2:54Speaker 2: reconnect with Attorney General JB. McCuskey. I know he's traveling
- 2:57Speaker 2: for work in another state right now. So we are
- 3:00Speaker 2: and to try our best to get Attorney General JB.
- 3:03Speaker 2: McCuskey on was I know McCuskey, and I know he's
- 3:06Speaker 2: somehow going to blame me for this, because that's what
- 3:08Speaker 2: he does, because we've been friends for a long time.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And I'm sure he will try to blame me for it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I think we have him now. Attorney General JB. McCuskey,
- 3:15Speaker 2: are you there, Dave?
- 3:17Speaker 5: Why does your phone not work?
- 3:19Speaker 2: It does work.
- 3:21Speaker 5: You knew I was going to blame you for.
- 3:23Speaker 1: I know.
- 3:23Speaker 6: That's what I just said.
- 3:24Speaker 2: You will blame me for.
- 3:25Speaker 6: I know.
- 3:25Speaker 5: I heard you. I heard you. I had to mess
- 3:28Speaker 5: around with you.
- 3:28Speaker 2: That's what you do.
- 3:29Speaker 5: I'm down here. I'm down here in Houston doing some
- 3:32Speaker 5: energy work and I'm glad to be with everybody today.
- 3:35Speaker 2: All right, how are things in Houston right now?
- 3:37Speaker 5: They're a little rainy, but it really is remarkable to
- 3:41Speaker 5: be in a place. Yesterday we toured a natural gas facility,
- 3:45Speaker 5: a brand new natural gas power plant that they permitted
- 3:50Speaker 5: and built within two years of the inception of the project.
- 3:53Speaker 5: And it really is remarkable to be in a place
- 3:56Speaker 5: where true regulatory reform is matching the needs of their economy. Right.
- 4:03Speaker 5: And so when places are growing, like like we want
- 4:06Speaker 5: West Virginia to grow, and like Texas is growing, these
- 4:09Speaker 5: are the things you have to be able to do.
- 4:11Speaker 5: And it really was. It was a remarkable day and
- 4:13Speaker 5: tour with the folks at Energy who built this plant,
- 4:17Speaker 5: and really hopeful to maybe get them up in West
- 4:20Speaker 5: Virginia looking at some sites here pretty soon.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I mean, that would be awesome, man. I mean when
- 4:23Speaker 2: you told me that two years from the development of
- 4:27Speaker 2: this plant to getting it up and operational, I mean,
- 4:29Speaker 2: that's that's unheard of in the energy world and anything
- 4:32Speaker 2: it has to do with any sort of regulations, that's
- 4:33Speaker 2: absolutely unheard of.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Sir.
- 4:36Speaker 5: Yeah, it's crazy, and you know it is. West Virginia
- 4:40Speaker 5: has to start to meet this need where it lies.
- 4:44Speaker 5: And that's sort of a trite saying, but you know,
- 4:46Speaker 5: if we want to be the place that's really starting
- 4:48Speaker 5: to grow and to offer the opportunities that we want
- 4:51Speaker 5: to offer to our families in West Virginia, we're going
- 4:53Speaker 5: to have to start to do things like this. And
- 4:56Speaker 5: I'm really hopeful that we can bring some of these
- 4:58Speaker 5: ideas back home and and do some of the stuff
- 5:01Speaker 5: that Texas is doing to really push the envelope.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Turn to General JB. Mccusky's here. When I hear the
- 5:06Speaker 2: word roadblocks, the first thing I thought of was road blocks,
- 5:09Speaker 2: and I'm thinking, oh, cool, block roadblocks. But it's not real.
- 5:12Speaker 5: It's roadblocks every three mile, Yeah, exactly.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I'll be seeing some of those this weekend. As a
- 5:18Speaker 2: matter of fact. What is what is Roadblocks? What's the
- 5:20Speaker 2: story here?
- 5:21Speaker 5: Yeah? So Roadblocks is a child's video game and essentially
- 5:26Speaker 5: what it is and video games have changed obviously a
- 5:28Speaker 5: lot since you and I were kids. You probably played Pong.
- 5:33Speaker 2: We actually played it on a cave wall, MCSK. That's
- 5:36Speaker 2: what we did.
- 5:36Speaker 5: It was sure you did.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Yeah, video games for you were just like a couple
- 5:40Speaker 5: of like RC cars at a box. Yeah. But Roadblocks
- 5:44Speaker 5: is it's it's a it's sort of an interactive world
- 5:46Speaker 5: where kids go and they build out, they can build
- 5:50Speaker 5: their own games within the game. They actually learn how
- 5:52Speaker 5: to code within the game. Uh. And it's really kind
- 5:55Speaker 5: of a remarkable thing for kids that are inclined, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 5: for sort of fantasy video games and and career kids.
- 6:01Speaker 5: And my eight year old is manic about it. She
- 6:03Speaker 5: absolutely loves it and her and her friends played all
- 6:05Speaker 5: the time. But there were a myriad of problems with
- 6:08Speaker 5: Roadblocks as it related to child safety and you know
- 6:11Speaker 5: what was happening was is the game was being used
- 6:14Speaker 5: as a platform for child predators. Et cetera, to go
- 6:17Speaker 5: in and find kids in these chat rooms, et cetera.
- 6:20Speaker 5: And there's been, you know, fairly well well publicized events
- 6:25Speaker 5: where kids have actually been abducted and or have had
- 6:29Speaker 5: really nasty things happen to them within the platform. And so,
- 6:32Speaker 5: you know, we called Roadblocks. There's some lawsuits, some states
- 6:34Speaker 5: have sued Roadblocks, and those suits are ongoing. But I
- 6:37Speaker 5: called the CEO of Roadblocks and I said, hey, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 5: we've got a real problem here, and you know, West
- 6:43Speaker 5: Virginia wants to work with you to change the way
- 6:45Speaker 5: that your platform works so that we can help protect kids.
- 6:49Speaker 5: And today we are announcing I believe we're the first
- 6:52Speaker 5: state in the country to have settled with Roadblocks. And
- 6:55Speaker 5: the reason why that's important is because we were able
- 6:58Speaker 5: to push them, not only to put provide eleven million
- 7:01Speaker 5: dollars to the state of West Virginia, which is not
- 7:03Speaker 5: an insignificant amount of money, over three million of which
- 7:07Speaker 5: will be child safety based. So they're going to be
- 7:10Speaker 5: providing US law enforcement officers to be on the ground
- 7:14Speaker 5: in West Virginia over the next seven years to help
- 7:16Speaker 5: us train principles and parents and students about the dangers
- 7:20Speaker 5: of all online gaming, not just not just on Roadblocks
- 7:24Speaker 5: and almost seven million dollars in cash that we can
- 7:27Speaker 5: use for a myriad of things. But equally importantly, they
- 7:31Speaker 5: have agreed to change the totality of their platform. And
- 7:34Speaker 5: so now when you log onto Roadblocks, there is an
- 7:37Speaker 5: AI facial recognition software that they've added that will it
- 7:41Speaker 5: takes a picture of your face and your child's face,
- 7:44Speaker 5: and it determines what your actual age is, and then
- 7:46Speaker 5: the game is restricted based on what your AI age is.
- 7:50Speaker 5: And they've changed all of the chat room functions to
- 7:53Speaker 5: ensure that only kids are speaking with kids that are
- 7:55Speaker 5: of their actual own age. And there's just a myriad
- 7:58Speaker 5: of other pretty significant technological changes that we were able
- 8:02Speaker 5: to get them to make. And what's really interesting here
- 8:05Speaker 5: is one Roadblocks will now be potentially the safest online
- 8:09Speaker 5: game for kids to be playing. But secondly, this is
- 8:12Speaker 5: how these things can really work. When a company steps
- 8:15Speaker 5: up and says, hey, I've got a great product, we
- 8:18Speaker 5: want kids to be able to use this, and we're
- 8:20Speaker 5: willing to admit that our platform is making a mistake.
- 8:23Speaker 5: And so we were able to do all of this
- 8:25Speaker 5: outside of litigation, and in a way that very quickly
- 8:29Speaker 5: made the safety changes we needed for West Virginia kids
- 8:32Speaker 5: and also provided us much needed resources to help us
- 8:35Speaker 5: combat this really growing problem. So this is a really
- 8:38Speaker 5: great result for West Virginia. It's something I'm really proud of.
- 8:41Speaker 5: And I was really proud to work with the Roadblocks folks,
- 8:44Speaker 5: because unlike our friends at Apple, and unlike our friends
- 8:49Speaker 5: at the pharmacy benefit managers, they were willing to say,
- 8:52Speaker 5: there's a problem, we want to step up and be
- 8:54Speaker 5: part of the solution and work with us. And they
- 8:56Speaker 5: did it, and it was really, really a great result.
- 8:59Speaker 5: I'm just proud today.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And I was going to bring that up because again,
- 9:03Speaker 2: as you said, again we're talking with Attorney General JB. McCuskey.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Not all companies that you've had interactions with have have
- 9:09Speaker 2: been that way. And this is a company and I
- 9:11Speaker 2: know absolutely nothing about this other than what you're telling me,
- 9:14Speaker 2: but this is a company that just said, hey, we've
- 9:16Speaker 2: got some issues, we want to work.
- 9:18Speaker 5: On it, yep. And what really comes out of this
- 9:22Speaker 5: then is they get to be a leader, right and
- 9:24Speaker 5: they now get to go around and say, you know,
- 9:27Speaker 5: Roadblocks stepped up to the plate, and hopefully other online
- 9:30Speaker 5: games will emulate you know what their safety protocols are,
- 9:34Speaker 5: and I think you know as we go around the
- 9:36Speaker 5: state over the next couple of years working with roadblocks
- 9:39Speaker 5: to educate kids and parents. Like I said in school
- 9:41Speaker 5: administrators about you know how to do this properly, We're
- 9:45Speaker 5: going to get tons of great feedback and they're going
- 9:47Speaker 5: to be able to change their platform in an ongoing
- 9:50Speaker 5: way to make sure that we're keeping up with the
- 9:52Speaker 5: dangerous trends.
- 9:54Speaker 2: We'll switch gears for a moment. Your office is working
- 9:56Speaker 2: on what's being called a religious freedom case. Now this
- 9:58Speaker 2: is in conjunction.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Was called that, David? Actually is that?
- 10:03Speaker 2: Okay? Okay, all right? It is a religious freedom case
- 10:07Speaker 2: in conjunction.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Trying to keep you on point.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Okay, well, I appreciate that this is in conjunction with
- 10:12Speaker 2: several other states. I have to do with a Catholic
- 10:14Speaker 2: school being excluded from a preschool program. Take it from there.
- 10:19Speaker 2: What is this all about?
- 10:21Speaker 5: Yeah, So, in Colorado, in their infinite wisdom, as they
- 10:24Speaker 5: are struggling with childcare and issues, just like West Virginia
- 10:28Speaker 5: is their very left leaning legislature has decided that parochial
- 10:33Speaker 5: schools who have a different religious understanding about certain issues
- 10:39Speaker 5: should be completely excluded from public funding for needed childcare
- 10:45Speaker 5: for the people in their state, and that is unconstitutional.
- 10:48Speaker 5: And West Virginia has stepped up along with I think
- 10:50Speaker 5: seventeen of the other Republican states to say, you know,
- 10:55Speaker 5: this isn't how this goes right. You have a right
- 10:57Speaker 5: in this country to be Catholic, You have a right
- 10:59Speaker 5: in this country to have your beliefs, and you have
- 11:02Speaker 5: a right if the government is offering these programs, to
- 11:05Speaker 5: be treated the same as people who have a different
- 11:07Speaker 5: religious philosophy than you do. And so this is sort
- 11:09Speaker 5: of as a fundamental question as to whether or not
- 11:13Speaker 5: we want to be a country where people can express
- 11:15Speaker 5: their faith and really step up to do the things
- 11:19Speaker 5: that we've asked churches and charities to do, or if
- 11:22Speaker 5: we want to go the other way and exclude everyone
- 11:25Speaker 5: that disagrees with the far left wing of the Democratic
- 11:28Speaker 5: Party from being able to help in any of these problems.
- 11:31Speaker 5: And so we are I'm very proud to be leading
- 11:34Speaker 5: on this issue. It's an important issue and the Supreme
- 11:36Speaker 5: Court will be deciding its soon.
- 11:38Speaker 2: We're three weeks away, JB from the primary election. There
- 11:42Speaker 2: was an issue in Cabull County where two people were
- 11:45Speaker 2: charged with falsifying their residency and you worked with the
- 11:49Speaker 2: Secretary of State's Office on this talk about that case.
- 11:52Speaker 5: Yeah, So, you know, one of the things that our
- 11:54Speaker 5: office does is we number one, we represent state agencies
- 11:58Speaker 5: in cases like this. But in this particular instance, this
- 12:01Speaker 5: was a criminal conviction, and our office is the is
- 12:06Speaker 5: the place where criminal convictions that are appealed. We represent
- 12:10Speaker 5: almost all of those instances. We represent the state, and
- 12:13Speaker 5: so we were the you know, these two folks in
- 12:16Speaker 5: Cabal County who had who'd been convicted or hadn't been convicted.
- 12:20Speaker 5: There was a procedural issue, went to the Supreme Court
- 12:24Speaker 5: and we were able to secure a victory to to
- 12:26Speaker 5: make sure that our elections are fair and safe. And
- 12:29Speaker 5: to their credit, Chris Warner and the Secretary of State's
- 12:31Speaker 5: Office has been awesome to work with and they are
- 12:34Speaker 5: really really committed to doing this and so we were
- 12:36Speaker 5: proud to represent them and this is a really good
- 12:38Speaker 5: result for the security of West Virginia's elections.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Well, we'd let you go. One of the case I
- 12:43Speaker 2: wanted to bring I want to bring up lawmakers put
- 12:47Speaker 2: forth on JBM moratorium on new methodone clinics instead of
- 12:50Speaker 2: West Virginia. Suit was filed claiming that somehow methodone clinics
- 12:54Speaker 2: should be part of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and
- 12:57Speaker 2: your office said, no, pick it up from there.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Yeah, it just isn't part of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- 13:04Speaker 5: And in this instance, this is where our office represents
- 13:07Speaker 5: the state right. So our state law has a moratorium
- 13:10Speaker 5: on these things. And the folks who challenged this were
- 13:13Speaker 5: improper plaintiffs, They didn't have standing, and their arguments really
- 13:16Speaker 5: didn't make sense. There are methadone clinics in West Virginia,
- 13:20Speaker 5: and I think everybody agrees that in limited usage, they
- 13:23Speaker 5: are a great resource for certain people who have substance
- 13:26Speaker 5: abuse disorder. But it is also an area where extreme
- 13:31Speaker 5: fraud can happen within the system. Is countless examples of
- 13:35Speaker 5: methadone clinics improperly using federal and state funds. And so
- 13:39Speaker 5: this moratorium is constitutional, it makes sense, it's a good law.
- 13:43Speaker 5: And so we were defending our legislature's decision to have
- 13:47Speaker 5: this moratorium against what was a challenge from honestly, it
- 13:52Speaker 5: wasn't even the challenge never really should have gotten to
- 13:55Speaker 5: where it was because the folks who brought it didn't
- 13:58Speaker 5: have standing to even ask the question.
- 14:00Speaker 2: All right, the Attorney General J. V. McCuskey. Always a
- 14:02Speaker 2: pleasure to have you on the show, sir. We'll talk soon.
- 14:05Speaker 7: Day.
- 14:05Speaker 5: We are three weeks from the election, buddy. Everybody needs
- 14:07Speaker 5: to get out there and vote. This is an incredibly
- 14:10Speaker 5: important election. I know everybody's getting all kinds of mailers
- 14:13Speaker 5: and stuff, but do your research, find the right candidates.
- 14:16Speaker 5: And I would be remiss if I didn't put in
- 14:19Speaker 5: a little shameless plug for my buddy, Delbert Rowse. She's
- 14:21Speaker 5: running for magister.
- 14:22Speaker 2: All right, all right, Diurney General JV. Mcuskey, appreciate you

- 17:39Speaker 2: Andy Shay is here along with the manager of the
- 17:40Speaker 2: Birds PJ. Phillips and Ben Blum, who's the general manager.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Welcome to all you guys.
- 17:45Speaker 6: Appreciate it man, Happy opening Day, I'm putty Opening DAYPJAS happening,
- 17:49Speaker 6: thank you, thank you. Glad to be here.
- 17:51Speaker 2: All right, So anyone to start with you. It's been
- 17:52Speaker 2: a long winter and you and I talked on the
- 17:54Speaker 2: show last Friday ahead of the home run derby.
- 17:56Speaker 6: We're ready for some baseball. We're pumped, man, We're so pumped.
- 17:59Speaker 6: I mean everything you know, I mean from the field
- 18:02Speaker 6: on up is just tremendous. I mean, the guys, like
- 18:05Speaker 6: it was so fun seeing the home run derby obviously
- 18:07Speaker 6: seeing these gigantic home runs, but seeing the camaraderie like
- 18:12Speaker 6: right off the bat was just absolutely awesome. And I
- 18:14Speaker 6: mean that is just a huge testament to this guy
- 18:16Speaker 6: here with PJ and building that culture with you know,
- 18:20Speaker 6: no time going by. I think the stadium has never
- 18:23Speaker 6: looked better. I mean, ranging from you know, the best
- 18:25Speaker 6: kids area we've ever had from eminem party, We've got
- 18:29Speaker 6: the coolest mini golf course that I know of. And
- 18:32Speaker 6: I may be a little biased because my wife Christine
- 18:34Speaker 6: is the designer for it.
- 18:36Speaker 2: You better say that.
- 18:37Speaker 6: Yeah, No, I mean it's it's been cool this last month.
- 18:39Speaker 6: I mean, the concourse almost looks like a mini parking
- 18:41Speaker 6: lot because we've had so many people doing so much
- 18:44Speaker 6: awesome work on the stadium. So we're just really pumped.
- 18:46Speaker 6: We're really pumped it's here.
- 18:48Speaker 2: It's gonna be a great season. And of course, you know,
- 18:50Speaker 2: there's so much more than just the baseball that goes
- 18:53Speaker 2: on to ballpark it's true of any baseball team. We'll
- 18:55Speaker 2: get to that a little bit later. What are some
- 18:56Speaker 2: new things at the ballpark this year?
- 18:58Speaker 6: Andy, Well, So, I mean the new that I'm so
- 19:00Speaker 6: pumped about. I mean, we're the only team in Minor
- 19:02Speaker 6: League Baseball that has a bumper car rank in the concourse.
- 19:06Speaker 6: So I mean having that addition to just our every
- 19:09Speaker 6: game is going to be so awesome. It is free
- 19:11Speaker 6: for people to use, It'll be for six or seven
- 19:13Speaker 6: minutes each and I mean that is just going to
- 19:16Speaker 6: be an awesome attraction. I do absolutely love. I kind
- 19:19Speaker 6: of mentioned earlier, but you know the mini golf course
- 19:21Speaker 6: that my wife designed is so fun. It's so cool,
- 19:25Speaker 6: and I mean you can just see kids being drawn
- 19:27Speaker 6: into it. And then when everyone sees our kids area
- 19:30Speaker 6: up and running, I mean I think it's you know,
- 19:32Speaker 6: it's all about kids, all about families, making it affordable
- 19:36Speaker 6: and easy and accessible as possible for people to attend.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Ben Blum is the general manager of the Dirty Birds.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I know you're excited about this season.
- 19:42Speaker 12: Sir, definitely looking forward to it.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Is there any certain thing, I mean, obviously the game.
- 19:47Speaker 2: We want to talk to PJ about that, about the
- 19:48Speaker 2: on the field thing here in the moment. But what
- 19:50Speaker 2: are you most looking forward to this season?
- 19:52Speaker 12: I'm looking forward the most to seeing friendly faces, you know,
- 19:55Speaker 12: getting back into the swing of things, having the ballpark
- 19:58Speaker 12: wide open, being that say, family friendly place for all
- 20:01Speaker 12: friends and customers to enjoy.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Manager PJ. Phillips, you know last year what didn't exactly
- 20:07Speaker 2: turn out like we wanted it to for the fans,
- 20:10Speaker 2: uh and for you guys as well. But it's a
- 20:12Speaker 2: new season. What are you most excited about this season?
- 20:14Speaker 13: Sir, man, I'm gonna be real with you, this is
- 20:17Speaker 13: the first time in the long time where I feel
- 20:20Speaker 13: felt really good about this season this early. The passion
- 20:23Speaker 13: these guys showed me, man, the last couple of days,
- 20:25Speaker 13: and the energy they bring is it's crazy, man. So
- 20:30Speaker 13: Charleston be ready for this year.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I mean, what is it that you see specifically talk
- 20:34Speaker 2: about the passion? Is it just in in the in
- 20:36Speaker 2: the in the practice sessions. Is if locker room is
- 20:38Speaker 2: combination of all where where do you see all this
- 20:40Speaker 2: passion coming from.
- 20:41Speaker 6: Locker room on the field?
- 20:43Speaker 13: I mean, these guys love playing baseball and they showing
- 20:45Speaker 13: it Like it was raining the other day and these
- 20:47Speaker 13: guys was itching to get back out and do a
- 20:50Speaker 13: home run derby, and you rarely see that, you know
- 20:52Speaker 13: what I mean. So these guys are excited. I'm definitely
- 20:54Speaker 13: excited at So.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Break down some of the positions for us, saying some
- 20:59Speaker 2: of the some of the things that you're really excited about,
- 21:01Speaker 2: biggest strengths and uh uh just from pitching the infield
- 21:05Speaker 2: and outfield, just breaking on down for us.
- 21:07Speaker 13: I don't give away too much. Absolutely, our bullpen is
- 21:11Speaker 13: really legit right now, this early. We have some guys
- 21:14Speaker 13: that are gonna be touching the triple digits. So I
- 21:17Speaker 13: started pitching. We got two aces, uh, Christopher Gondo, Kiva
- 21:20Speaker 13: Sampson leading leading away. And I really wanted to load
- 21:24Speaker 13: up on hitting this year because we struggled a little
- 21:26Speaker 13: bit last year out the gate. So I really want
- 21:28Speaker 13: to focus on getting the bets going and uh showing
- 21:31Speaker 13: the fans, you know, we hit the long ball.
- 21:33Speaker 2: How many approximately, how many players are new this year
- 21:37Speaker 2: returning from last year? I mean just just approximately.
- 21:39Speaker 13: I think we have six returners and everybody else would
- 21:42Speaker 13: be new, but they but they played in this league,
- 21:44Speaker 13: but they just knew that.
- 21:46Speaker 2: Okay, Well, and that's and you have that at this
- 21:48Speaker 2: level of baseball. I mean, obviously, again we're talking to Andy,
- 21:50Speaker 2: she Ben Blum and PJ Phillips. Pj, of course, is
- 21:53Speaker 2: the manager of the Dirty Birds. You talked about improving
- 21:56Speaker 2: on hitting a little bit because you struggled a little bit.
- 21:58Speaker 2: What as a manager and your other coaches, what have
- 22:00Speaker 2: you done to make sure the hitting picks up a
- 22:03Speaker 2: little bit.
- 22:04Speaker 13: I mean, I really went after the guys that knows
- 22:06Speaker 13: how to manage the game, especially when guys on base.
- 22:10Speaker 13: That that was a big problem last year. I think
- 22:12Speaker 13: we lift led the league and leaving guys on base.
- 22:14Speaker 13: So I went very focused on guys that light's driving
- 22:18Speaker 13: and runs and having fun up there.
- 22:21Speaker 2: So Andy and will get back to you just for
- 22:22Speaker 2: a moment, And I mean, how excited are you to
- 22:25Speaker 2: be bringing this team back to Charleston? You know, because
- 22:28Speaker 2: it's I believe it or not, it's been twenty years
- 22:30Speaker 2: and this is twenty one years. I guess in this ballpark,
- 22:32Speaker 2: I think, am I right about that? To me, you
- 22:33Speaker 2: are correct, And I mean for me personally, it's weird.
- 22:36Speaker 2: I mean, this is gonna be my twenty second opening day,
- 22:39Speaker 2: But I mean I still get chills, I still wake up.
- 22:43Speaker 6: I'm not too proud to mat it. I'm dancing. I'm
- 22:45Speaker 6: getting excited. I'm pumped for the day to start. I mean,
- 22:48Speaker 6: my kids are hugging me. They know that how important
- 22:50Speaker 6: Opening Day is, so I mean, it is so exciting,
- 22:53Speaker 6: and this is really cool thinking about the team composition
- 22:57Speaker 6: and everything that this will be PJ and I's fifth
- 22:59Speaker 6: year together. I'm definitely still giving Tillman the MVP in
- 23:02Speaker 6: twenty one because when there's only one person voting and
- 23:05Speaker 6: someone from his team is the MVP, that doesn't count.
- 23:08Speaker 6: So we've had four MVPs in four years, so we'll
- 23:12Speaker 6: see who it is this year. But it is awesome.
- 23:15Speaker 6: It is so exciting and you know, I mean just
- 23:18Speaker 6: feeling it when you walk around the stadium, even before
- 23:21Speaker 6: even this morning, walking around, I mean, I'm getting chills
- 23:23Speaker 6: because it is just so fun. It's Opening day. Baseball's here.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Talk about this team and the relationship with the capital
- 23:30Speaker 2: city because I mean, you guys aren't just a team
- 23:33Speaker 2: in the city and this has been under your ownership.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I mean, the city really embraces this team. But you
- 23:39Speaker 2: guys are are happy to be in Charleston, and even
- 23:42Speaker 2: you know, I mean even when it's all on the field.
- 23:45Speaker 2: You see Dirty Birds player, you guys out in the
- 23:48Speaker 2: I mean we had a successful event last Thursday night.
- 23:51Speaker 2: I know over in Putnam County where I live, you
- 23:53Speaker 2: guys are happy to be part of the community.
- 23:55Speaker 6: Oh more than happy. I mean love it. I've loved
- 23:57Speaker 6: it here. My family and I moved here three and
- 23:59Speaker 6: a half years ago. This will be my personal fourth
- 24:01Speaker 6: season kind of day to day here and everything. As
- 24:05Speaker 6: much as I talk about how much I love the
- 24:06Speaker 6: stadium and how much I love the games, I mean
- 24:08Speaker 6: the community is beyond supportive. I mean it is so cool.
- 24:12Speaker 6: That's why. I mean I always wear Dirty Bird stuff around.
- 24:14Speaker 6: I love it because it looks great. But then I
- 24:16Speaker 6: think people just love it and they light up when
- 24:18Speaker 6: they see it, and I light up when I see it.
- 24:20Speaker 6: So I mean, whether it's at my kid's schools, whether
- 24:23Speaker 6: it's you know, out and abound in the community, I
- 24:25Speaker 6: mean it's so cool. I've heard from both the Mayor's
- 24:27Speaker 6: office as well as Center to Capitol's office already this morning.
- 24:31Speaker 6: I mean, the support is in my opinion, second and none.
- 24:35Speaker 6: So I mean that's what really really motivates me to
- 24:39Speaker 6: what can we do more in the community, at the
- 24:41Speaker 6: stadium and on the field.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah, you mentioned earlier Andy, the home run derby was
- 24:45Speaker 2: this past week. I know there was some some rain.
- 24:48Speaker 2: I guess they're towards the end. But how was the
- 24:50Speaker 2: home run derby over?
- 24:52Speaker 14: Oh?
- 24:52Speaker 6: It was absolutely awesome. I mean it was more than
- 24:54Speaker 6: towards the end too. I mean Pj put me on
- 24:57Speaker 6: ice on our little competition between the two of us.
- 24:59Speaker 6: That's why eat me this year. But I mean it
- 25:01Speaker 6: was raining from the beginning and it was pouring and
- 25:04Speaker 6: these guys brought it out even more. But you know,
- 25:07Speaker 6: it was so I mean it was electric. It really was,
- 25:09Speaker 6: even with pouring rain, with nasty weather, all of that stuff.
- 25:13Speaker 6: I mean hearing these guys cheer for each other, seeing
- 25:16Speaker 6: last year's champion gave the ice bath to this year's champion,
- 25:20Speaker 6: there were so many of those things that it was like, Man,
- 25:22Speaker 6: this is really fun and this is a pretty special team.
- 25:25Speaker 2: I want to talk about this competition between you and
- 25:27Speaker 2: manager PJ Phillis what's this all about?
- 25:28Speaker 6: One last year? So man, that's ep iced me this year.
- 25:32Speaker 13: Two years man, and this year I got them, so
- 25:35Speaker 13: you know, finally makes you I don't think you tried me.
- 25:38Speaker 6: My training started yesterday for next year. Okay, So I
- 25:42Speaker 6: mean I'm gonna be ready.
- 25:43Speaker 2: After opening up against Laxi tonight. You're gonna have another
- 25:45Speaker 2: Grand Slam school day. I know you just had one
- 25:47Speaker 2: sort of an as an exhibition last week. Talk about
- 25:50Speaker 2: and being I'll bring you in this talk about how
- 25:51Speaker 2: much fun those games are for the students us out.
- 25:54Speaker 6: Those games are great.
- 25:55Speaker 12: You know, we we really enjoyed the exhibition game because
- 26:00Speaker 12: we had no rules, so you know we could. PJ
- 26:03Speaker 12: was great with keeping time in between endings nice and long,
- 26:06Speaker 12: and we did a lot of things to involve the
- 26:09Speaker 12: fans the kids, to get them all involved in the game.
- 26:12Speaker 12: And you know, I even saw Sip up in the stands,
- 26:15Speaker 12: which was fun to see. He went up there and
- 26:17Speaker 12: just started walking around and visiting kids and saying hi.
- 26:20Speaker 12: And you know, those are just things that you don't
- 26:22Speaker 12: traditionally see in baseball. And I'm looking to see how
- 26:25Speaker 12: much we can bridge that gap and do those in
- 26:27Speaker 12: our games this summer, escially even tomorrow.
- 26:29Speaker 2: And you guys, and then you can wait in on
- 26:31Speaker 2: this Randy or anybody. You guys know the importance of
- 26:33Speaker 2: getting young people involved in baseball because I mean the
- 26:36Speaker 2: statistics show that nationwide baseball is just not as popular
- 26:39Speaker 2: as it used to be for one reason or another.
- 26:42Speaker 2: But you guys are always doing things with I mean
- 26:44Speaker 2: every game, there's something going on for the kids. You
- 26:46Speaker 2: have days specifically set aside for the kids. But you
- 26:49Speaker 2: guys are all about making these youngsters fans and fans
- 26:53Speaker 2: hopefully we'll be fans for a lot of time.
- 26:55Speaker 6: It's monumental. I mean, it really is kind of the
- 26:57Speaker 6: core of our business and at least me personally as well.
- 26:59Speaker 6: Before I'm here, the team had been doing one of
- 27:01Speaker 6: these school days a year. Now we're doing four, So
- 27:04Speaker 6: having that is absolutely monumental. We sponsor and support and
- 27:08Speaker 6: our big partners with eighteen little leagues in the Charleston
- 27:12Speaker 6: area and always looking to add more. I mean it's
- 27:14Speaker 6: the coolest thing seeing the Dirty Birds, but you know,
- 27:16Speaker 6: logo on all of these little league jerseys. But we're
- 27:21Speaker 6: always looking to do more, always looking to see how
- 27:23Speaker 6: we can make the game more fun. I mean, I'm
- 27:26Speaker 6: also a coach pitch coach in Little League, and you know,
- 27:29Speaker 6: so whether it's from that angle or by all means
- 27:30Speaker 6: from the Dirty Birds, I mean It is monumental of
- 27:33Speaker 6: getting kids that are excited about playing but also excited
- 27:36Speaker 6: about working in it, excited about coming to the game.
- 27:38Speaker 6: You know, not everyone may be a shortstop or a
- 27:42Speaker 6: pitcher or even want to hit or anything like that.
- 27:44Speaker 6: But if they're pumped about the game in general, both
- 27:47Speaker 6: in terms of being around it working in it, I mean,
- 27:50Speaker 6: that's still a win in my book.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Well, I just want to say, you're talking about being
- 27:53Speaker 2: a fan. I see Pj's rocking the Dodgers had over there.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Can we just say something about my Cincinnati Reds, who
- 27:59Speaker 2: are playing some pretty good baseball right now.
- 28:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know. I don't know if I'm buying
- 28:07Speaker 6: the NL Central right now, so I don't know. I'm
- 28:09Speaker 6: still bommed to the dog Dodgers beat the Phillies in
- 28:12Speaker 6: the playoffs last year, So still bombed. But uh yeah,
- 28:16Speaker 6: well we'll reserve judgment on the NL SENTI twenty First,
- 28:20Speaker 6: let's keep that in mind.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Yes, I urge you go over to Dirty Birds baseball
- 28:24Speaker 2: dot com and follow the Birds on social media for
- 28:26Speaker 2: not only scheduled but also their promotions and just looking
- 28:28Speaker 2: at some of what you have coming up this season,
- 28:30Speaker 2: among other things. You're gonna do a Jason Williams bobblehead night,
- 28:35Speaker 2: the runaway beer truck. Owen Schmidt is going to be
- 28:38Speaker 2: there at one point. You got bark in the park
- 28:40Speaker 2: throughout the season, Bald and Beautiful night. That one stuck
- 28:43Speaker 2: out to me. What's that all about.
- 28:44Speaker 6: Well, we've got a handful of balds in our office,
- 28:47Speaker 6: so we're excited to really have them lead the charge.
- 28:50Speaker 6: We're gonna have a bald parade on the fields pregame.
- 28:54Speaker 6: I think we're gonna have some shaving cream and whatnot.
- 28:56Speaker 6: Has a fun little giveaway and really just a good celebration.
- 29:00Speaker 6: Make sure plenty of hats are out there if it's
- 29:02Speaker 6: a sunny day.
- 29:03Speaker 2: And anybody scorched out.
- 29:05Speaker 6: I'm just having a lot of fun there. But you know,
- 29:08Speaker 6: like you mentioned too, both you know, really and truly
- 29:10Speaker 6: with Jason Williams, with Owen Schmidt, with Mothman. I mean,
- 29:13Speaker 6: a lot of the things we're doing are really and
- 29:15Speaker 6: truly celebrations of West Virginia as well. I mean in
- 29:19Speaker 6: their own kind of way. Yeah, exactly, so, I mean
- 29:23Speaker 6: those are really things that are near, you know, that
- 29:25Speaker 6: are very I think people have a lot of pride
- 29:28Speaker 6: in and those people have a lot of pride in.
- 29:30Speaker 6: But you know, as I said the other day, Jason
- 29:32Speaker 6: Williams will be in attendance. Owen Schmidt will be in attendance.
- 29:35Speaker 6: Still waiting to hear back from the Mothman.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Okay, whether or not he'll be there exact work, and
- 29:39Speaker 2: his agent's really tough from exactly I understanding. Tex says,
- 29:43Speaker 2: do you guys ever do open tryouts for the team.
- 29:45Speaker 2: There's a lot of talent here who never attended college.
- 29:48Speaker 3: You know what.
- 29:48Speaker 6: So our league had an open tryout a couple of
- 29:51Speaker 6: weeks ago. It's something that we've tossed around of if
- 29:54Speaker 6: it would be better to have, you know, ten local
- 29:57Speaker 6: open tryouts versus one for the whole league league. So
- 30:01Speaker 6: to answer the question, literally, we do not have anything
- 30:04Speaker 6: on the map, and I don't think we've done one here.
- 30:07Speaker 6: I know, again, we were planning on it. This was
- 30:08Speaker 6: four years ago, but rain blah blah blah. So you know,
- 30:11Speaker 6: something that we're always kind of thinking about. But as
- 30:13Speaker 6: it stands now, it's one league wide open tryout.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Other Texas there's a rise in women's professional softball. Have
- 30:20Speaker 2: you ever considered starting a professional softball team.
- 30:23Speaker 6: I mean, I'm always I've literally just said to someone
- 30:25Speaker 6: the other day, the more softball that we can have
- 30:27Speaker 6: at the ballpark, the better. So I mean, that is
- 30:29Speaker 6: something that is certainly a thought. And this guy knows
- 30:35Speaker 6: as much about that world as anyone around here. So
- 30:38Speaker 6: that is something talking about PJ and his family. But anyways,
- 30:43Speaker 6: that is something that we certainly, you know, have an
- 30:46Speaker 6: eye on.
- 30:47Speaker 2: And again, opening night is tonight at Gomart Ballpark, So
- 30:51Speaker 2: I'll just give you guys an opportunity to say any
- 30:53Speaker 2: things on your mind. Ben, We'll start with you. Just

- 39:42Speaker 2: you go. So now as to why I'm here today,
- 39:46Speaker 2: well it's complicated. As I told you guys, I was
- 39:52Speaker 2: diagnosed with cancer a couple months ago, started treatments last Thursday. Now,
- 39:58Speaker 2: the treatments are supposed to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- 40:04Speaker 2: That's what I agreed upon, and somehow, the folks and
- 40:06Speaker 2: it happens you're dealing with humans at the oncologist office
- 40:10Speaker 2: got screwed up a little bit and they scheduled me
- 40:13Speaker 2: for one yesterday, which I obviously missed because they called
- 40:16Speaker 2: me at ten thirty and said, are you gonna be
- 40:17Speaker 2: able to make your appointment? I said no, I'm at work.
- 40:21Speaker 2: So we got it straightened out. Again, dealing with humans,
- 40:25Speaker 2: things happen. So I figured, I mean, I'm gonna be here,
- 40:28Speaker 2: may as well do the show. So I'm scheduled for
- 40:31Speaker 2: another treatment on Thursday, meaning I will be away from
- 40:34Speaker 2: the local show on Thursday. Dale Cooper will sub for me,
- 40:37Speaker 2: but I should be okay for midday. I will be
- 40:41Speaker 2: here tomorrow on the local show, and Friday, but not Thursday.
- 40:45Speaker 2: As I said, Coop will sit in for me Thursdays
- 40:48Speaker 2: and a few more Tuesdays and Thursday, that is, unless
- 40:51Speaker 2: the schedule somehow gets messed up again. In that case,
- 40:54Speaker 2: I'll be I'll be here. I will say. I've had
- 40:57Speaker 2: a lot of people that have asked me about I've
- 40:59Speaker 2: only had one treatment, you know, one radiation. I have
- 41:01Speaker 2: a lot of people that have asked me, well, how
- 41:03Speaker 2: you doing whatever? And I had had to treat my
- 41:05Speaker 2: last Thursday, came back to work, zero issues until last night.
- 41:12Speaker 2: I got home, settled in, you know, eating a little dinner,
- 41:15Speaker 2: and suddenly my legs didn't work anymore. And I'm somebody
- 41:20Speaker 2: who's never had a lot of ailments. I've never had
- 41:22Speaker 2: a broken bone in my life or anything other than
- 41:25Speaker 2: having my appendix taken out and my tonsils removed. I
- 41:28Speaker 2: really haven't had any sort of medical issues my entire life,
- 41:31Speaker 2: and all of a sudden I get up in my
- 41:33Speaker 2: in my legs don't move anymore. Did a little research
- 41:35Speaker 2: and find out that on some people and only undergone
- 41:38Speaker 2: one treatment, that apparently a rubbery legs situation is not
- 41:43Speaker 2: uncommon so I told Ryan, I said, if by some
- 41:46Speaker 2: chance there should be a fire breakout of the building,
- 41:49Speaker 2: it's his responsibility to carry me out of the building
- 41:52Speaker 2: because legs. Legs aren't working very well right now.
- 41:58Speaker 20: Uh.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Tex says on this situation with the EMTs, a guy
- 42:01Speaker 2: who allegedly jumped on the ammals was dragged under the
- 42:03Speaker 2: anbults for two miles, lost in an arm multiple picks and
- 42:06Speaker 2: videos of the blood trail, also nine to one one
- 42:08Speaker 2: call logs and the paramedics abmitting they heard a man
- 42:10Speaker 2: screaming in their car being told to pull over by
- 42:13Speaker 2: nine to one one operator. They did not pull over.
- 42:15Speaker 2: I did see a video of that, and it was
- 42:18Speaker 2: a horrific video. The video that I saw was not
- 42:22Speaker 2: that long, but somebody just showed it to me. I
- 42:25Speaker 2: don't share things like that. Somebody came up to me
- 42:27Speaker 2: and said, hey, have you seen this? And I watched it.
- 42:29Speaker 2: So there we are. Tex says. Independent leagues are typically
- 42:34Speaker 2: for veteran players on their last rounds looking for a

- 45:52Speaker 2: is three weeks from today, today's the deadline to get
- 45:55Speaker 2: yourself registered, change your party, update your voting information, ceter
- 46:00Speaker 2: or whatever it is you need to do. You can
- 46:02Speaker 2: go to the county clerk's office in person, or simply
- 46:05Speaker 2: do it online. It's probably a whole lot easier. Go
- 46:08Speaker 2: vote wv dot com. It's very, very simple. And of
- 46:12Speaker 2: course this controversy continues to loom about registry. About registered independence. Now,
- 46:20Speaker 2: if you are registered as an independent in the state
- 46:24Speaker 2: of West Virginia, you cannot do as you've done in
- 46:29Speaker 2: the past, walk into your polling place, either on election
- 46:32Speaker 2: day or the days leading up to the election early
- 46:34Speaker 2: voting and request a Republican ballot. That's the way it
- 46:37Speaker 2: has been. If you I'm a registered independent, you walk
- 46:41Speaker 2: in and you say, I'm a registered independent, but I
- 46:43Speaker 2: would like a Republican ballot. You can no longer do that.
- 46:46Speaker 2: You can ask for a democratic ballot, or you can
- 46:48Speaker 2: remain non partisan. And it is worth noting that the
- 46:53Speaker 2: poll workers are not allowed. It is against state code.
- 46:58Speaker 2: If I walk in as an due and I say
- 47:02Speaker 2: I'm a registered I mean chances are in West Virginia
- 47:04Speaker 2: you're going to know your poll workers anyway. You know
- 47:06Speaker 2: it is West Virginia. But if I walk in and
- 47:09Speaker 2: I'm a registered independent, poll workers by law are not
- 47:12Speaker 2: allowed to say, oh, you're an independent, would you like
- 47:14Speaker 2: a Republican or Democrat ballot? They are not allowed to
- 47:17Speaker 2: do that. So if you walk in and you say,
- 47:21Speaker 2: I am a registered Independent, but I want a Democrat ballot,
- 47:23Speaker 2: no problem. If you say I'd like a Republican ballot,
- 47:27Speaker 2: they are going to tell you no, because that's that's
- 47:32Speaker 2: the new rules according to the Republican Executive Committee that
- 47:35Speaker 2: they passed not long ago. Now you'll be allowed to
- 47:38Speaker 2: vote for your judges, board of education, et cetera. And again,
- 47:43Speaker 2: this was a decision that was made by the state
- 47:45Speaker 2: Republican Party's Executive Committee a year or so ago. And
- 47:50Speaker 2: it's their party. They can make the rules, I think,
- 47:55Speaker 2: and they didn't ask me. I think they made a
- 47:57Speaker 2: huge mistake. So it just want to make sure that
- 48:00Speaker 2: everybody knows that. Before the primary election, again, somebody asked
- 48:05Speaker 2: me the other day that kept saying. They said, why
- 48:07Speaker 2: do you all keep talking about this? I said, because
- 48:08Speaker 2: I know what's going to happen on election day somewhere
- 48:12Speaker 2: in West Virginia, maybe here in Kanawa County, maybe Putnham County.
- 48:15Speaker 2: Somebody is going to go into their polling place and
- 48:18Speaker 2: they're going to say, I'm a registered Independent, but I'd
- 48:21Speaker 2: like a Republican ballot, and they are going to be
- 48:23Speaker 2: told no, and they're going to take it out on
- 48:26Speaker 2: seventy five or eighty year old Hattie. I keep changing
- 48:28Speaker 2: the name. By the way, who is the poll worker?
- 48:31Speaker 2: And it's not the poll worker's fault. So if you
- 48:34Speaker 2: are a registered independent, you cannot request a Republican ballot.
- 48:38Speaker 2: The Republican Executive Committee made that rule a couple of
- 48:41Speaker 2: years ago. And as I said, don't take it out
- 48:42Speaker 2: on the poll workers, the county clerks, the legislature, they
- 48:46Speaker 2: did not make these rules. The Republican Party did. And
- 48:52Speaker 2: also remember that this is new. You have to have
- 48:57Speaker 2: a photo ID in order to vote. That can be
- 49:01Speaker 2: a driver's license, could be a passport, a military ID
- 49:06Speaker 2: as long as it cut a photo a student ID,
- 49:10Speaker 2: anything issued by the government or somebody and if you
- 49:13Speaker 2: don't have a photo ID and you're registered to vote,
- 49:17Speaker 2: you can get a photo ID at your county clerk
- 49:20Speaker 2: free of charge. And I know this because in a
- 49:25Speaker 2: past life, as you well know, I'll disclose your outwork
- 49:27Speaker 2: for the Secretary of State's office. And the first election
- 49:31Speaker 2: that ID in general was required for was the road
- 49:34Speaker 2: bond election in twenty eighteen, the Roads to Prosperity. You
- 49:37Speaker 2: remember that that was the first year that that was
- 49:40Speaker 2: the first election that you were required to have ID
- 49:45Speaker 2: to vote. And at that time there were sixteen seventeen
- 49:47Speaker 2: different things you could use. Well, now it has to
- 49:49Speaker 2: have your picture on it, Okay, so just know that
- 49:53Speaker 2: before you go in. If you're somebody who leaves their
- 49:56Speaker 2: wallet or their purse in the car or whatever, don't
- 49:59Speaker 2: do that. Have your driver's license with I can't. I mean,
- 50:02Speaker 2: everybody's different. I've been carrying a wallet since I was
- 50:06Speaker 2: like five. Okay. The two old man things that I
- 50:10Speaker 2: did as a kid. I always wore a watch and
- 50:12Speaker 2: I still wear a watch. And I carried a wallet.
- 50:15Speaker 2: Didn't have a lot in it when you're five years old,
- 50:18Speaker 2: but I've always carried I mean, these people that say
- 50:21Speaker 2: I left my wallet in the car. I just I
- 50:23Speaker 2: don't get that. But everybody's different. I understand that. But
- 50:26Speaker 2: the photo IDs are free at your county clerk's office
- 50:29Speaker 2: if you're a registered voter. So one of the things
- 50:33Speaker 2: that I always got a little irritated, Well, you're disenfranchising voters. No,
- 50:38Speaker 2: you're They're free, and I don't know how you survive
- 50:45Speaker 2: in life without some sort of ID. So you can
- 50:48Speaker 2: miss me with that. Disenfranching voters. Disenfranchising voters argument also
- 50:52Speaker 2: worth noting, which I talked about on mid midday yesterday.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Poll workers cannot refuse to allow anyone to vote, all right.
- 51:01Speaker 2: If you show up with nothing, they're still gonna let
- 51:03Speaker 2: you vote. It'll just be a provincial ballot because by law,
- 51:07Speaker 2: poll workers cannot tell you you can't vote. All right.
- 51:12Speaker 2: I'll say, okay, here's your provision. The more you know
- 51:16Speaker 2: when I invite you to join me every Friday morning

- 51:42Speaker 2: belong to a party. Democrats always talk condescendingly to everyone
- 51:46Speaker 2: because they think they're smarter than everyone, but they are nots. TJ.
- 51:52Speaker 2: Meadows is here, sub So you do man doing well?

- 52:00Speaker 6: What happened?
- 52:01Speaker 2: It's apparently related to the radiation I'm under under going
- 52:05Speaker 2: just like one my legs just so, will you carry
