- 0:02Welcome to Pick Up and Deliver, the Podcast
- 0:06where I pick up my audio recorder
- 0:07as I step off the train and deliver an episode
- 0:09to you while I walk home.
- 0:11I'm Brendan Riley.
- 0:12(upbeat music)
- 0:14One of my least favorite parts about living
- 0:22in the Midwest is the way that particularly spring weather
- 0:26is so unsettled.
- 0:28Some days it'll be a really nice balmy time
- 0:33and temperature and other days it'll be downright chilly.
- 0:36Today definitely falls into the downright chilly category.
- 0:39In fact it is very cold and it's snowing
- 0:43and I don't like that it's snowing in April.
- 0:46So I say boo to the snow.
- 0:49Not as not cold enough the snow is accumulating
- 0:51as soon as it hits the ground.
- 0:53It melts, but still... yuck.
- 0:58And then I had a game experience yesterday
- 1:00that I thought I would share
- 1:02and talk about the subject that it's
- 1:05made me think about today.
- 1:07And so the title of this episode is Never Tell Me the Odds.
- 1:10This is of course a Star Wars reference
- 1:14in Han Solo and C3PO and the gang are making their way
- 1:19through the asteroid belt C3PO tells Han Solo
- 1:22that their odds of surviving navigation through
- 1:25the asteroid belt are very low and Han Solo says
- 1:29"never tell me the odds."
- 1:31I'll say you had that yesterday or a couple days ago.
- 1:34Not was yesterday.
- 1:35My son and I were collaborating to play our Solo adventures
- 1:39for our Frosthaven characters.
- 1:42He's playing the Trapper and I'm playing the Pain conduit
- 1:45and we have both of them have just reached their
- 1:50eligibility for their Solo missions.
- 1:54And so yesterday we played them both.
- 1:56We had both played them once before and done poorly
- 1:59but on the replays we did pretty well and succeeded.
- 2:02So I wanna talk a little bit about that experience
- 2:07so for him particularly,
- 2:09his approach to the Solo adventure was meticulously planned.
- 2:16Mine was a little bit more slip shot
- 2:19but still pretty tactically careful.
- 2:24There were a couple times where he was trying
- 2:26to decide whether to do something or I was trying
- 2:29to decide whether to do something.
- 2:31I ended up looking at like what are the odds
- 2:33that the bad guys will, that the monsters will do a thing
- 2:38that would disrupt this plan.
- 2:41There was one time where he wanted to do something
- 2:43and it was a one in three chance
- 2:45that the bad guy would disrupt the plan
- 2:47and he said well Yolo and he went for it
- 2:49and it worked out just fine.
- 2:50So that's a fun twist.
- 2:53I never, I did not examine things quite the same way.
- 2:57I think I did at one time where I'm like
- 2:58well is there any situation in which the guy can move five
- 3:01or whatever was most of the time they could only move four
- 3:04or something like that.
- 3:05So in those instances we were trying to evaluate the odds
- 3:09but it did get me thinking about the way
- 3:11that often when I play games,
- 3:14something being of low odds often does not deter me
- 3:17from trying it.
- 3:18I am an eternal optimist about the luck potential
- 3:21of the dice and the willingness of the universe
- 3:24to let me have a win even if I don't deserve it
- 3:28or it would be ridiculous.
- 3:29And so in that regard I thought I would talk a little bit
- 3:32about some games where this sort of thing happens
- 3:36and I fully acknowledge that it's not good strategy
- 3:39to do it this way, but I often do it anyway.
- 3:42Places where the game, the setup of the game is so fun
- 3:45that I don't wanna know the odds
- 3:46I just wanna do the thing.
- 3:47So to start with Terraforming Mars.
- 3:50I played Terraforming Mars many times,
- 3:52quite a few times on the table and count way more times
- 3:55on digital implementation,
- 3:58particularly since it showed up on board game arena.
- 4:01And I always like accumulating blue cards.
- 4:05So if you haven't played before,
- 4:06there are cards that let you build things
- 4:09in on the ground.
- 4:12There's cards that let events happen
- 4:14and then there are cards that let you
- 4:17add different kinds of bonuses and machinery
- 4:21to your tableau.
- 4:22And my experiences, the bonuses in the machinery
- 4:25in the tableau need to be very carefully chosen
- 4:29because for the most part they are a time sink
- 4:32and a resource sink that they are less valuable
- 4:35than they appear to be or you would hope
- 4:38that they are going to be.
- 4:39Generally if you have a choice between doing something
- 4:42that adds to the map and doing something
- 4:44that are your resource production or doing something
- 4:47gives you like a machine or an action,
- 4:50a special action that you can do.
- 4:52Generally the machine or a special action
- 4:53is only gonna be useful if you do it really early in the game.
- 4:55So you have plenty of time to run that machine.
- 4:57The later you do it, the more likely it is to not be useful.
- 5:00This isn't to say that they don't feed off each other
- 5:03and they can't be useful,
- 5:05but they're just not as good as if you
- 5:07spent those same resources doing some of the other things
- 5:10that advance the end of the game and get you points directly.
- 5:13The premier version of this, two cards that I almost always take
- 5:17when I get the chance and generally are not an effective use
- 5:21of resources or energy or effort, I mean not energy.
- 5:25Would be the microbe card and the advanced research projects.
- 5:30I think that's what the second one's called.
- 5:31I might have the title wrong, but in the microbe,
- 5:33the advanced research projects, you can activate it
- 5:36to draw a card and then you can pay three
- 5:38to keep that card if you want.
- 5:39Or maybe two, I think it's three though.
- 5:41So it's just like you got an extra card on the draw,
- 5:44but I always like to have the option of more cards.
- 5:46And then the other one, and this is the real ridiculous one,
- 5:48would be the microbe card.
- 5:50So this card works, you pay a certain amount to build it
- 5:54and it's not a very extensive card.
- 5:55And then every time you use the card, you pay one money
- 5:58and you get the draw card.
- 6:00And if it has a microbe tag on it, you add a microbe to the card
- 6:04and each microbe on the card is worth one point.
- 6:07Well, this is a terrible deal
- 6:09because your odds of drawing a microbe card are terrible.
- 6:12So you could spend oodles and oodles of money
- 6:16and never draw a single microbe card.
- 6:18So you never get a single point, which is a real bummer
- 6:21when you look at how you might do with that money
- 6:25that would get you points.
- 6:26Now that's not to say you can't have success with it,
- 6:29you can, but the odds are terrible.
- 6:31But I almost always take that card if I come across it
- 6:33because I love the thrill of drawing a card
- 6:36and seeing if I get a microbe.
- 6:37And then if I do get one or even two in the game,
- 6:40that feels pretty good.
- 6:41It feels like I got my money worth probably.
- 6:43It's a really dumb thing to be excited about
- 6:46and speaks to, I don't know, some element,
- 6:48hope, hopefulness in my play that defies logic or skill
- 6:53but is instead built around the idea of optimism in how I play.
- 6:57So that is the microbe search from Terraforming Mars.
- 7:00This is very similar to another kind of hope that I have
- 7:05and this is looking for a match in a large card deck.
- 7:08Whenever I have a game where you're gonna be drawing cards a lot,
- 7:11I always overestimate the likelihood
- 7:14of finding the card I need from the deck.
- 7:17So in Ark Nova, this might mean building a strategy around
- 7:20acquiring certain kinds of animals,
- 7:22even if those animals are relatively hard to get
- 7:24and I don't have very many of them to begin with.
- 7:27In Everdell, it might mean building a strategy around
- 7:30finding the dungeon or finding the ranger
- 7:34and then I never find those cards
- 7:36and my whole strategy is blown to heck
- 7:39or even Skyjo, which is a game we've played quite a bit lately.
- 7:43In that one, you can try to set yourself up
- 7:47to get rid of a column by drawing a card you need
- 7:51from the draw deck.
- 7:55And if you fail on that, it's way worse
- 7:58than just getting rid of those high cards to be in one.
- 8:00But completing the column feels so good
- 8:02that I often want to do that,
- 8:05even if it turns out it's a dumb choice.
- 8:07Finally, one of the big games of last,
- 8:11the big party games of last year is Flip 7.
- 8:14This is another game where I often,
- 8:16just I like to push my luck.
- 8:18If I get to the point where I have revealed five of the seven cards
- 8:21and now I need two more,
- 8:23oh, I almost always go for it.
- 8:25Now if my whole deck, if my whole display is like 10s, 11s,
- 8:28and 12, like 9, 11, and 12 or something,
- 8:32then I often won't because the odds are terrible.
- 8:35But if I feel like I have a reasonable hope
- 8:38that the last card would be something I don't have,
- 8:41I'll often go for it because I love pushing the odds.
- 8:45This is certainly related to pushing your luck,
- 8:47but it's almost more just like even in games
- 8:49that don't have pushed your luck as a mechanism,
- 8:51I will resort to that aspect of it sometimes.
- 8:56In die rolling, that bad odds optimism,
- 9:00manifest in a couple games, of course,
- 9:03Perudo or Liars Dice is a classic
- 9:06that would have this kind of choice in it.
- 9:09Do I think the people around the table
- 9:12have a specific number of dice or not?
- 9:15I always think I can squeeze one more out of it
- 9:18or hope for one more.
- 9:19But I would say I would point to a bigger example
- 9:21of this kind of effect would be Elder Sign.
- 9:24Elder Sign I talked about recently
- 9:26is a game where you're trying to complete
- 9:29dice rolls to complete locations.
- 9:32It's not a push your luck game because once you choose,
- 9:35it's sort of like manage your luck,
- 9:37once you choose a card you're gonna play,
- 9:39then you continue till you either defeat the card
- 9:42or you take the penalty.
- 9:45There's no benefit to like quitting partway through,
- 9:48either complete the card or you don't.
- 9:50So it's not a push your luck game,
- 9:52but it does often make you feel like
- 9:55you should be able to win
- 9:56because you're just looking for like one symbol
- 9:58on three dice or something.
- 10:00But the odds of rolling a single side of one of three dice
- 10:04are comparatively low.
- 10:05I don't know what they are precisely,
- 10:07but it's not high.
- 10:08Even if you get to roll those dice
- 10:10and succeedingly smaller groups.
- 10:12But when I play Elder Sign,
- 10:14I'm often just intrigued by the possibility.
- 10:18It feels like oh, it should be easy enough to do.
- 10:19I get to roll five dice.
- 10:20I only have three of them match the symbols I'm looking for.
- 10:24It's a compelling blind spot in my brain
- 10:28that I feel like makes for fun gameplay.
- 10:31Even though it often means that I lose.
- 10:33So I'm not sure how to describe that effect,
- 10:37the idea that even if it means I'm gonna lose,
- 10:40I have fun gambling with the odds of whether I win or not.
- 10:44Because the correct role is so delightful.
- 10:49It's such a satisfying experience
- 10:51that sort of having it fail
- 10:53isn't really that bad an element.
- 10:57Two other places where I see this kind of thing come up
- 11:00in Cascadia and it's tighter cousin Calico.
- 11:04And both of these drafting games
- 11:07you are taking something and hoping
- 11:09that you will get what you need in a future draw.
- 11:13Every time you take something,
- 11:14you're reducing the possibility
- 11:15that you will get what you need.
- 11:17Far away is another one that works like this.
- 11:19When you take cards early and play them,
- 11:22you are hoping that you're going to have the symbols
- 11:24you need to complete those cards later on.
- 11:27And the mix of those two is the really interesting
- 11:30and effective part of what's going on in the game,
- 11:33finding that connection between the two different pieces.
- 11:36The last game on point two that has that kind of gambling
- 11:40on the future element is Seven Wonders.
- 11:42This is of course a game where you're trying to get
- 11:44a mix of things that will give you the most points.
- 11:47If you take some of the long-term development things,
- 11:49you're just hoping you're going to get something
- 11:51that pays off for them in the future.
- 11:53Of course other games that have this sort of hope you can do it,
- 11:56even if the odds say you can't aspect something like
- 12:00Dungeons and Dragons of course is all about mitigating
- 12:03or managing your luck and trying to find
- 12:07just the right time to ask or pursue
- 12:10a particular kind of victory.
- 12:12And co-op games often end up being about
- 12:14managing the luck at play in the system.
- 12:19Trying to figure out, do I have the right combinations
- 12:21of things in order to succeed?
- 12:24I think a game like Ghost Stories,
- 12:26which encourages you to imagine that you could use
- 12:29the dice to win the tasks.
- 12:31And as long as you think you can use the dice
- 12:33to win the tasks, you will fail at task after task
- 12:37that having that enticement there is a great misliter
- 12:42for how the game works.
- 12:43And our odds are at contrast with our feeling
- 12:48about what we should be able to do.
- 12:50So what games do you find yourself wishing you didn't know the odds?
- 12:54Or where you find yourself gambling against,
- 12:57gambling against bad odds so that you can do well?
