- 0:39SPEAKER_27: Welcome in.
- 0:40SPEAKER_27: Glad to have you with us.
- 0:41SPEAKER_27: The Wednesday edition, and that means it's Braylon's Daley to lead off.
- 0:47SPEAKER_27: Not that you should be here every Wednesday.
- 0:49SPEAKER_27: That would be great.
- 0:49SPEAKER_27: You'd be like a regular Wednesday.
- 0:52SPEAKER_27: Every Wednesday, Brayland's Daley, Tennessee wide receiver.
- 0:55SPEAKER_27: What a just for example, what's a Wednesday practice workout treatment day like for Brayland's Daley?
- 1:04SPEAKER_05: Okay, uh, so I'm in a breakfast, probably around 6.15.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: Uh, go get some treatment at 6 30.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: Um, after treatment, um, getting stretched by the strength staff.
- 1:14SPEAKER_05: Um, how long does it take to get stretched?
- 1:18SPEAKER_05: 10.
- 1:18SPEAKER_05: 10 minutes.
- 1:19SPEAKER_05: Okay, not too bad.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: Not too bad.
- 1:20SPEAKER_05: So after I get stretched, I'm um chilling until it's time to go up to meetings, uh, you know, go over some film, go over some, you know, new installs or whatnot.
- 1:27SPEAKER_05: Uh go out to the practice field, practice for a little bit, come back inside.
- 1:31SPEAKER_05: We lift.
- 1:32SPEAKER_05: Um, and then after my lift, I probably I'm chilling on the Wednesday.
- 1:35SPEAKER_05: I think I have a massage, and that's really about it for me.
- 1:38SPEAKER_05: So Okay, so um you do lift like right after practice before you eat?
- 1:44SPEAKER_27: Yes.
- 1:44SPEAKER_27: Oh wow.
- 1:45SPEAKER_27: Yes.
- 1:45SPEAKER_27: So you're probably starving at that point, aren't you?
- 1:48SPEAKER_05: I'd be ready to eat, man.
- 1:49SPEAKER_27: Ready.
- 1:50SPEAKER_27: So does does lunch end like on a Wednesday, does lunch end up being your biggest meal of the day?
- 1:56SPEAKER_27: Yes.
- 1:57SPEAKER_27: Okay.
- 1:58SPEAKER_05: Yes, lunch is probably my biggest meal.
- 1:59SPEAKER_27: Okay, so then um class stuff or anything on Wednesday?
- 2:03SPEAKER_27: Wednesday, no class.
- 2:04SPEAKER_27: Wednesday, no class.
- 2:05SPEAKER_27: So you're just relaxing in the afternoon.
- 2:07SPEAKER_27: Yes, sir.
- 2:07SPEAKER_27: And then you go to dinner roughly five, not even five, probably like six, something.
- 2:13SPEAKER_27: Okay.
- 2:14SPEAKER_27: And so do you have any football responsibilities Wednesday night?
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: Uh sometimes we we come back for meetings.
- 2:19SPEAKER_05: Uh do some meetings before uh dinner.
- 2:21SPEAKER_05: So come back and talk to through the practice we just uh had that Wednesday, and then that's about it.
- 2:27SPEAKER_27: So how does that prepare you for Thursday?
- 2:29SPEAKER_05: Prepares a lot.
- 2:30SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, just seeing like some of the looks we get in practice is what we go typically get on a Thursday uh walkthrough.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: I just see if you remember.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: Like we go talk through it through the meetings, and it's your job to take it onto the field.
- 2:40SPEAKER_05: So it's really good for us on that Thursday.
- 2:42SPEAKER_27: Did you have to get very used to the fact that in college the meetings are as important as they are?
- 2:49SPEAKER_27: Yes.
- 2:49SPEAKER_27: Yes because in high school you really don't No meetings at all.
- 2:53SPEAKER_27: Right.
- 2:53SPEAKER_27: I mean you don't have time.
- 2:55SPEAKER_27: Yeah you're going to school eight to three or whatever, then you practice, and then I mean there's no time for meetings.
- 3:01SPEAKER_05: No time.
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: So you gotta really be hunt uh dialed in in the meetings.
- 3:04SPEAKER_05: So you know be able to take notes.
- 3:06SPEAKER_05: Uh you know, you gotta take it on from the meeting room to the field.
- 3:09SPEAKER_27: Who do you sit with in the meetings?
- 3:11SPEAKER_05: Um, so beside me is Joe Kim Dawson, uh Deion Harden to my right, and then we got Mike, Travis, and uh TK Keys.
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: So Joe Kim's still in there.
- 3:19SPEAKER_05: He's still in the room, yes, sir.
- 3:20SPEAKER_05: He's taking his notes, he's doing all his stuff.
- 3:22SPEAKER_27: He he engaged.
- 3:23SPEAKER_27: So all right.
- 3:24SPEAKER_27: So Joe Kim, for those who had forgotten, uh, was injured early in the season, lost for the year, but staying plugged in and and still trying to to learn, and I'm sure you admire the fact that he's uh he's doing that.
- 3:38SPEAKER_27: How many questions will he ask you?
- 3:41SPEAKER_05: Um, shoot.
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: If he if he's you know confused about anything, uh he'll he'll look to his right, you know, ask me a few questions, ask me uh, you know, what Coach Pope just said, uh, how would I do this?
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: Or you know, he I'm asking him, how would you do this?
- 3:54SPEAKER_05: You know, you know, it's good to have good mindsets in a room like that, just to be able to talk through, you know, things that we see on the field.
- 4:00SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm I want to see what Joe C and hopefully he wants to see what I see.
- 4:04SPEAKER_05: So it's a good thing.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: So it's peers.
- 4:05SPEAKER_27: Yes, sir.
- 4:06SPEAKER_27: It's just a it's a good discussion of ideas along with what you're seeing about the opponent.
- 4:12SPEAKER_27: So you get to Wednesday, how much do you know about the upcoming opponent in this position, Kentucky?
- 4:19SPEAKER_05: So get to Wednesday.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: Uh Monday is typically one of those days we watch film in the morning.
- 4:24SPEAKER_05: Um you come back on your own to watch some um like throughout the day.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: And then for the like night meetings, uh, we watch uh Kentucky, um, like the DV summary or whatnot.
- 4:34SPEAKER_05: Tuesday, uh we get into like some uh like red zone stuff, um, you know, getting into third downs, you know, the situation of the days and all that stuff like that.
- 4:44SPEAKER_05: But typically Wednesday, we watch we watch a good amount of film.
- 4:47SPEAKER_05: Um I think Thursday is one of the days we watch film too, and then Friday is a big film day.
- 4:51SPEAKER_05: Big film day.
- 4:52SPEAKER_05: Yes, sir.
- 4:53SPEAKER_27: Kentucky secondary is very, very active and they have been very productive.
- 4:57SPEAKER_27: Yeah.
- 4:58SPEAKER_27: Um Ty Bryant, yes, Jordan Castile, two of the best safety, well, they're really one of the best safety combinations in America overall.
- 5:06SPEAKER_27: How does it change your job?
- 5:08SPEAKER_27: And their corners are good too, and their nickel's good, not saying they're not.
- 5:11SPEAKER_27: But does it change how you're going to play the game, knowing their safeties are as effective as they are?
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: It don't change my way of playing at all.
- 5:20SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, I'm just gonna continue to go out there, play fast, play hard, uh, and physical.
- 5:24SPEAKER_05: And I think that's you know, that's what I always gotta do.
- 5:26SPEAKER_05: And I think just for you know, those guys there, they're really smart, really smart guys in the back end.
- 5:31SPEAKER_05: So just being able to get in my window really quick, uh, being able to show up for the quarterback, and you know, we'll be fine.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: What did you concentrate on during the bye week?
- 5:39SPEAKER_05: Man, I had to get some sleep first.
- 5:41SPEAKER_05: I had to get some sleep first.
- 5:43SPEAKER_05: Man, so I had to rest up.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, obviously I watched a little bit of film over the break too.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: Um, but that's that's really about it.
- 5:49SPEAKER_05: Treatment, get some dress.
- 5:50SPEAKER_27: Um, you know, just do you do you do a lot in the work in terms of workouts during that period of time, or do you just try to let your body rest more?
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: Um we we had a couple lifts.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: Um we had about two lifts.
- 6:00SPEAKER_05: Uh, but usually just trying to let our body, you know, you know, like rest a little bit, you know, get our b legs underneath ourselves.
- 6:06SPEAKER_05: So did it give you a head start on Kentucky in terms of preparation?
- 6:09SPEAKER_05: It did, yes, sir.
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: We did practice last week, um, and it gave us a good head start on you know Kentucky.
- 6:15SPEAKER_05: Interesting.
- 6:16SPEAKER_27: Tell me about your thoughts on what November can be for the Tennessee football team, starting with Kentucky.
- 6:22SPEAKER_05: Man, it could be very, very good month.
- 6:25SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, got a couple games on the road, uh, Kentucky, uh, Texas AM.
- 6:30SPEAKER_05: We got LSU, uh, Vandy Autumn guys, but I feel like we got a good shot to, you know, do something special in November.
- 6:37SPEAKER_05: A lot of tough things about South Carolina.
- 6:39SPEAKER_27: Yes, sir.
- 6:40SPEAKER_27: One of the tough things was the passing game was this close to really making a big jump in terms of productivity.
- 6:49SPEAKER_27: You had a touchdown catch that obviously would have been big.
- 6:52SPEAKER_27: Great catch by the time.
- 6:53SPEAKER_27: Yes, sir.
- 6:54SPEAKER_27: Good throw, great catch.
- 6:55SPEAKER_27: Way to hold on to it.
- 6:56SPEAKER_27: Uh didn't count, unfortunately.
- 6:58SPEAKER_27: How do you sense, take out the penalties and everything else?
- 7:02SPEAKER_27: Do you sense when you watch those plays that Tennessee's passing game is ready to take another step?
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: I think so.
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: Yes, sir.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: I think we're we're ready to take a big step, honestly.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: Um obviously, uh the couple games that we have had, um, passing game has been a little low.
- 7:18SPEAKER_05: Um, but I think you know, us just being able to stay uh, you know, in the game, uh keep preparing, um, you know, coming out to practice, you know, practicing hard.
- 7:26SPEAKER_05: Um, it's kind of you know opening it up for us, and then we get to the game, it's just natural.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: So I think we just take out the penalties like we said, and you know, we just go out and let it rip.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: Dark mode.
- 7:36SPEAKER_05: Dark mode.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: Saturday night.
- 7:37SPEAKER_27: Yes, sir.
- 7:38SPEAKER_27: What does Braylon Staley think of dark mode?
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: Man, amazing, amazing environment.
- 7:43SPEAKER_05: Fans all into it.
- 7:44SPEAKER_05: We're gonna need them this week.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: Um, but man, great environment, man.
- 7:48SPEAKER_05: I can't my favorite one.
- 7:50SPEAKER_05: Do you get to keep those jerseys?
- 7:51SPEAKER_05: I hope so.
- 7:53SPEAKER_05: I hope so.
- 7:54SPEAKER_27: I hope so.
- 7:55SPEAKER_27: I would imagine you get those jerseys.
- 7:57SPEAKER_27: Your family fights you.
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: Man, I hope though.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: I saw I hope we get to keep them.
- 8:00SPEAKER_27: There you go.
- 8:01SPEAKER_27: Well, we're looking forward to seeing you on Saturday.
- 8:03SPEAKER_27: Yes, sir.
- 8:03SPEAKER_27: 6.15 kickoff, dark mode.
- 8:06SPEAKER_27: Braylon Staley.
- 8:07SPEAKER_27: Have that massive game.
- 8:09SPEAKER_27: Yes, sir.
- 8:09SPEAKER_27: I got you.
- 8:10SPEAKER_27: Do it.
- 8:10SPEAKER_27: Let's do it.

- 11:29SPEAKER_07: That's a great question.
- 11:33SPEAKER_07: Well, Glenn, you don't necessarily need a boat.
- 11:36SPEAKER_07: You need a friend with the boat.

- 11:44SPEAKER_07: This has been at Coach Hypo.
- 11:46SPEAKER_07: With me, Coach Hyper.
- 11:51SPEAKER_16: Let's be real for a second.
- 11:53SPEAKER_20: Vaping isn't harmless.
- 11:54SPEAKER_20: Most vapes contain nicotine.
- 11:56SPEAKER_29: And nicotine can lead to addiction, especially while your brain is still developing.
- 12:00SPEAKER_20: And once you're hooked, it's not easy to just stop whatever.
- 12:04SPEAKER_20: You've got goals.
- 12:06SPEAKER_20: Sport, school, friends.
- 12:09SPEAKER_20: A future you're building rotten out.
- 12:11SPEAKER_20: Don't let a trend decide that for you.
- 12:13SPEAKER_20: Protect your potential.
- 12:15SPEAKER_20: B T and strong.

- 13:14SPEAKER_12: Book your free estimate today and get your winter project on the calendar.
- 13:20SPEAKER_27: The Tennessee defensive line has been outstanding in the season's first two months.
- 13:26SPEAKER_27: The statistics show it for sure, but to go deeper into D-line success, we need a defensive line expert.
- 13:34SPEAKER_27: We know one, a VFL, former NFL first-round pick, and defensive line coach, Robert Ayers.
- 13:42SPEAKER_27: When you look at this group, knowing what you know about Rodney Gardner, having worked with him, what has he done well with this group?
- 13:51SPEAKER_34: As a coach, you always want your group to take on your personality.
- 13:54SPEAKER_34: And when you got the personality of Rodney Gardner, that's that's that's the gold standard of what you want from D-Leman.
- 14:01SPEAKER_34: In your face, smash mouth, hard nose, intense, never taking a rep off.
- 14:07SPEAKER_34: And I really feel like this group has taken on identity.
- 14:10SPEAKER_34: Certain guys, in particular, like Tyree Weathersby, Carson General, you know, uh uh Big X-Men, like those dudes really, when you watch them play, I think of Rodney Garner.
- 14:21SPEAKER_34: Like, man, you could tell that's a Rodney Garner coach D-line.
- 14:24SPEAKER_34: And so it starts with him and it just trickles down through all of them guys.
- 14:28SPEAKER_34: Did you know that Tyree Weathersby had this in him?
- 14:31SPEAKER_34: Uh 1,000%.
- 14:33SPEAKER_34: Okay.
- 14:33SPEAKER_34: Uh, you know, I got the coaching for two years, and man, when he came in uh his first year, I was with him and he hurt his hip.
- 14:40SPEAKER_34: But this dude, uh, you know, I was telling people way before this year, like Big Ramon, that dude's a draft pick.
- 14:46SPEAKER_34: That dude's a high draft pick.
- 14:48SPEAKER_34: He's cut from the right cloth, his temperament, his mindset, his attitude, he's in your face, he's hard-nosed.
- 14:54SPEAKER_34: Like even when he was hurt, he's pushing through it.
- 14:56SPEAKER_34: He just wants it.
- 14:57SPEAKER_34: He's smart, he learns the game, and I knew he had it in him.
- 15:00SPEAKER_34: To see things starting to, you know, show up for him on Saturdays, man.
- 15:05SPEAKER_34: I text him after the game, man.
- 15:07SPEAKER_34: I love it for him, man, because I know what he's been through.
- 15:09SPEAKER_34: I know what it means to him, I know what it means to his family.
- 15:12SPEAKER_34: So, man, I 1,000% knew he had this in him because he just has gifts that you can't teach, and he has the right mentality.
- 15:20SPEAKER_34: So those two things always work out well.
- 15:23SPEAKER_34: Just health is starting to play into his favor now.
- 15:25SPEAKER_27: Marion die and the gifts.
- 15:27SPEAKER_34: Oh man, that dude.
- 15:29SPEAKER_34: I'm jealous of that dude.
- 15:30SPEAKER_34: I wish I was, I wish I had the 37-inch arms and 6'6.
- 15:35SPEAKER_34: Man, he's a freak of nature, man.
- 15:37SPEAKER_34: Both of them dudes, man.
- 15:38SPEAKER_34: Uh, and he's learning how to use his his talent.
- 15:41SPEAKER_34: You know, when he first got to college and uh, you know, when it recruited him, you could tell he had all the intangibles.
- 15:47SPEAKER_34: He just wasn't being taught how to use them, so to speak.
- 15:50SPEAKER_34: Uh, but uh a moment where uh something that I knew he was gonna be successful this season or have a good year coming into this year, when I had the chance to coach the bowl game last year for the Music City Bowl, my very first practice after practice, he walks up to me, hey Coach Aries, let's work.
- 16:05SPEAKER_34: I'm like, man, this is my first day back, you know, I was gone and I came back for the bowl game.
- 16:10SPEAKER_34: Let's work, Coach Airlines, let's work.
- 16:11SPEAKER_34: And I'm like, so we out there after practice.
- 16:13SPEAKER_34: I was like, yeah, he's hungry.
- 16:14SPEAKER_34: And you just see it, and now you know that he's putting in the work, and you see it on Saturdays, man.
- 16:19SPEAKER_34: Things are starting to slow down for him.
- 16:21SPEAKER_34: But he has all the gifts.
- 16:23SPEAKER_34: I'm so jealous.
- 16:24SPEAKER_34: He's probably the most physically imposing D-lineman we have, man.
- 16:27SPEAKER_34: He's a giant, like, you can't teach those long arms.
- 16:31SPEAKER_34: Like, I have 33 and a half, 34-inch arms.
- 16:34SPEAKER_34: His arms are like 37 inches.
- 16:36SPEAKER_34: It's crazy.
- 16:36SPEAKER_34: It's insane.
- 16:37SPEAKER_34: And when he learns how to use them and he gets strong, oh my God.
- 16:40SPEAKER_34: And so, man, we recruited well.
- 16:42SPEAKER_34: I was a part of his recruiting process.
- 16:44SPEAKER_34: Coach G, you know, Chop is no longer here, but we all kind of pieced in to help recruit him, and along with the other guys, man.
- 16:50SPEAKER_34: He got a lot of talented guys, but man, he's a freaking nature.
- 16:53SPEAKER_27: All right.
- 16:54SPEAKER_27: I want Robert Ayers to explain to me from a defensive line point of view, whether it be player or coach, however you choose to take it, why is Xavier Gilliam having such a massive year?
- 17:07SPEAKER_27: What is happening that goes beyond what we can see?
- 17:14SPEAKER_34: You gotta start with Coach uh Coach Knowles, right?
- 17:18SPEAKER_34: One thing a defensive lineman always wants is a one-on-one matchup, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_34: No matter who you are, you want that one-on-one.
- 17:25SPEAKER_34: You don't want to get doubled.
- 17:26SPEAKER_34: You know, we deal with that all the time.
- 17:28SPEAKER_34: And I gotta credit Coach Knowles in a lot of ways because the one thing I'm seeing is they're doing things to isolate guys on him one-on-one.
- 17:36SPEAKER_34: So where you can't double him, you can't chip him, you can't do things like that, whether it be a five down front.
- 17:41SPEAKER_34: What I mean by five down front, you got, you know, a defensive end on the three technique, a nose, a three, and then two nines.
- 17:48SPEAKER_34: So you got five guys stacked on the line of scrimmage.
- 17:50SPEAKER_34: Well, you have to identify who's rushing, who's not.
- 17:53SPEAKER_34: And more times than not, they're gonna say five down, meaning we gotta block this one-on-one, unless they leave an extra tight end in or something like that.
- 18:00SPEAKER_34: And we do a lot of that when you see T-Lander crap down on that's not just, oh, we want T-Lander to rush the passer, that's we want a one-on-one.
- 18:08SPEAKER_34: Right?
- 18:09SPEAKER_34: And so he's able to capitalize on those situations.
- 18:12SPEAKER_34: And it's really, you know, sometimes you get players that are square peg, round hole, meaning they just don't go together.
- 18:19SPEAKER_34: Rodney Garner and Xavier Gilliam is a perfect match for what Rodney Garner wants his guys doing and what his skill set shows.
- 18:27SPEAKER_34: Like Rodney Garner teaches penetrating, flying off the ball, attack, attack, attack, attack, attack, attack, attack.
- 18:33SPEAKER_34: Every play he wants you attacking.
- 18:35SPEAKER_34: It's no read and react.
- 18:36SPEAKER_34: He wants you attacking every play.
- 18:38SPEAKER_34: So that is a match made in heaven in the sense of coach and player coming together, and this is what you see.
- 18:45SPEAKER_34: Like, he couldn't have chose a better coach to play for in the transfer portal to match his skills.
- 18:51SPEAKER_27: So he picked like quarterbacks picked the perfect place.
- 18:53SPEAKER_27: Definitely.
- 18:54SPEAKER_27: Xavier Gillian picked the perfect place and the perfect coach.
- 18:57SPEAKER_34: Definitely.
- 18:57SPEAKER_34: Because if he's going somewhere not to knock anyone, but if he's somewhere Auburn, maybe, you know, or uh or Alabama, you know, the way they used to think do things with Nick Saban, he's not having this type of impact because he's reading, reacting, you know, trying to take on two blockers and stuff like that.
- 19:15SPEAKER_34: Nah, that's not where he needed to go in the transfer portal.
- 19:18SPEAKER_34: He found a place that is a perfect match.
- 19:20SPEAKER_34: And he's flying off that ball.
- 19:22SPEAKER_34: He's relentless, he's attacking, he's using his skill set.
- 19:26SPEAKER_34: Jim knows they're putting him in one-on-one situation, whether it's isolated as a zero technique, head up to the center, slanting, moving his quickness, uh, whether it's at a four eye, he's penetrating and working to contain, man.
- 19:38SPEAKER_34: It's a perfect match with a guy like that.
- 19:41SPEAKER_34: And man, I love seeing him.
- 19:42SPEAKER_34: Actually, I DN'd him, like, hey man, I gotta come meet you, man.
- 19:45SPEAKER_34: I'm a I'm a I'm a fan.
- 19:47SPEAKER_34: Like, I'm an alum and I've accomplished what I accomplished, but I'm a fan of all these guys that walk through this building and wear that power tee.
- 19:55SPEAKER_34: And I said, I gotta meet this dude.
- 19:56SPEAKER_34: This dude is too good for me not to meet.
- 19:58SPEAKER_34: And so I look forward to meeting him one day, but man, he he did his due diligence in the transfer portal.
- 20:03SPEAKER_34: That's what the transfer portal is intended to be.
- 20:06SPEAKER_34: You know, a lot of guys in my era, you go somewhere and you know, you want to play in this type of system.
- 20:14SPEAKER_34: Well, coming out of high school, you don't really know where you where you want to play in.
- 20:17SPEAKER_34: You don't know what you're gonna be.
- 20:19SPEAKER_34: Well, if you went to the wrong scheme, if I would have gone to a place where I was a two-gap, I wouldn't have been the first-round draft P, right?
- 20:27SPEAKER_34: I played for Dan Brooks and I was able to, you know, flourish.
- 20:31SPEAKER_34: But you were trapped in those schools back in the early 2000s.
- 20:35SPEAKER_34: There was no, oh man, this scheme doesn't fit me, and you know, I I want to leave.
- 20:41SPEAKER_34: No, you're stuck there unless you go to JUCO for two years.
- 20:44SPEAKER_34: And so there's a lot of negativity behind the transfer portal, but Xavier Gilliam, I hope I'm saying his name right, that's what the transfer portal is intended to do.
- 20:54SPEAKER_34: It's not about the money, it's about how can you go somewhere and be uh groomed into a man and also be a great player?
- 21:01SPEAKER_34: And he used it tremendously, and I'm excited to have him wearing his power tee.
- 21:05SPEAKER_27: So the other guys too Nathan Robinson, Carson Jennel, uh you get a guy a youngster like JJ Fetch, certainly David uh David Hobbs, I mean, all of those guys.
- 21:18SPEAKER_27: What else are they contributing that's helping to make Die and Gilliam and Weathers be more successful?
- 21:27SPEAKER_34: Uh I think their friendship, man, that's it maybe sound cliche, but when you have a brotherhood in any group, whether it's O-line, D-line, receivers, whatever, when you have that brotherhood, it makes you more willing to do the dirty work that'll allow your brother to be successful.
- 21:43SPEAKER_34: I've played, I've coached guys, I've played with guys, they just wanted their stats, right?
- 21:47SPEAKER_34: So when it came time to them, you know, to take on that double team, they don't want to do it.
- 21:52SPEAKER_34: Or if they gotta penetrate and pick the guy for you to come free, they don't want to do it.
- 21:57SPEAKER_34: These guys seem like they're a brotherhood.
- 22:00SPEAKER_34: Their family.
- 22:00SPEAKER_34: I know Coach G emphasizes that.
- 22:03SPEAKER_34: I know Coach Jackson, right?
- 22:04SPEAKER_34: AJ.
- 22:05SPEAKER_34: I've heard, man, tremendous things about the man that he is.
- 22:09SPEAKER_34: And I'm so proud to have him as a coach on this staff.
- 22:12SPEAKER_34: So with those two, you know, they're preaching that brotherhood.
- 22:16SPEAKER_34: And it shows like they're unselfish.
- 22:18SPEAKER_34: They play for one another.
- 22:19SPEAKER_34: When one's tired, a fresh guy's coming in, there's no drop-off.
- 22:24SPEAKER_34: Everybody's excited.
- 22:25SPEAKER_34: If I, you know, I see Tyree Weathersby get a sack, him and X, they're throwing up celebrations.
- 22:30SPEAKER_34: You see Ethan Udley and Marion and all those guys, man, they love each other.
- 22:34SPEAKER_34: And that's that's that's a big deal.
- 22:36SPEAKER_34: It may sound corny, but it really matters in the grand scheme of things.
- 22:40SPEAKER_34: What are you willing to do for your brother?
- 22:42SPEAKER_34: Because if you just play for yourself and you just want to get your own stats, that only goes so far.
- 22:47SPEAKER_34: But when I'm playing hard to not let you down, that's when it goes a long way.
- 22:51SPEAKER_34: And that's what I see in these guys.
- 22:52SPEAKER_34: And it's I'm so proud.
- 22:54SPEAKER_34: I'm not their coach anymore, but I'm so proud to see them dudes out there thriving the way they are.
- 23:00SPEAKER_27: When we return a visit to Kiv's Corner to meet a big-time Nashville product who, due to his grandfather and father, is baseball royalty in the state of Tennessee.
- 23:12SPEAKER_27: You'll meet him next.
- 23:14SPEAKER_28: This is your home for coaches and players.
- 23:17SPEAKER_28: One-on-one from Rocky Top.
- 23:19SPEAKER_28: This is your ball network.
- 23:25SPEAKER_27: Welcome back.
- 23:26SPEAKER_27: It's now time for the show within the show.
- 23:28SPEAKER_27: This is Kibb's Corner, presented by Calhoun's.
- 23:39SPEAKER_27: This is Ross Kivitt, University of Tennessee Assistant Baseball Coach, third base coach, also recruiting coordinator.
- 23:46SPEAKER_27: And Ross, welcome to the show.
- 23:48SPEAKER_08: And please introduce our guest for today's Kibbs Corner.
- 23:51SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 23:51SPEAKER_08: Thanks, Coach Keith.
- 23:52SPEAKER_08: Uh, we are going to keep with the trend of newcomers.
- 23:54SPEAKER_08: This time it's a freshman newcomer from Nashville, Tennessee, Lipscomb Academy.
- 23:59SPEAKER_08: He is a utility player, meaning he can play both the outfield and the infield, but most importantly, he hits left-handed.
- 24:06SPEAKER_08: He does it very, very well.
- 24:07SPEAKER_08: His name is Jack Dugan.
- 24:09SPEAKER_14: How are we doing today?
- 24:10SPEAKER_27: Hi, Jack.
- 24:11SPEAKER_27: My question to you is your dad was some kind of good catcher.
- 24:16SPEAKER_27: How are you not a catcher?
- 24:17SPEAKER_14: I do not know, to be honest with you.
- 24:19SPEAKER_14: My brother went down that route for a little bit too.
- 24:21SPEAKER_14: He caught like his younger years and he tried to be a pitcher, but I never really touched a catcher from that.
- 24:26SPEAKER_14: So that's what's something that's kind of funny.
- 24:28SPEAKER_27: So your dad doesn't make a catcher out of you, which stuns me.
- 24:32SPEAKER_27: Because man, he was He's too athletic, Coach.
- 24:34SPEAKER_08: He's lean.
- 24:34SPEAKER_08: Look at that.
- 24:35SPEAKER_08: He's 6'2, he's lean.
- 24:36SPEAKER_08: But his dad was like that.
- 24:37SPEAKER_08: He can run, though.
- 24:38SPEAKER_08: No way Mike could run.
- 24:39SPEAKER_27: No offense, Mike.
- 24:40SPEAKER_27: Mike was okay running, but he couldn't throw.
- 24:44SPEAKER_27: You did not, you didn't take a lead that far from first base.
- 24:47SPEAKER_27: I didn't know he couldn't throw.
- 24:48SPEAKER_27: Oh, yeah.
- 24:49SPEAKER_27: He had a gun.
- 24:50SPEAKER_14: His shoulder hurts now.
- 24:51SPEAKER_14: I understand.
- 24:52SPEAKER_14: Well, that's up to BP.
- 24:53SPEAKER_14: Exactly.
- 24:53SPEAKER_27: But I'm telling you, so from but from the standpoint of playing a lot of positions, how did you how did you get into that?
- 25:02SPEAKER_14: Was that summer ball type things?
- 25:04SPEAKER_14: I mean, it was like a especially little league, I was always in the infield, I felt like, because I was a little bit quicker, and then it kind of stuck with it.
- 25:10SPEAKER_14: And then just as time was going on, I've just been trying to be as athletic as I can, just like in the weight room and stuff.
- 25:16SPEAKER_14: So just trying to stay quick.
- 25:17SPEAKER_14: Did you play football there too?
- 25:19SPEAKER_14: I did not.
- 25:19SPEAKER_14: I tried a couple times and I'm not working out.
- 25:22SPEAKER_14: Just didn't take.
- 25:23SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 25:24SPEAKER_08: Do you want me to answer that for Jack?
- 25:25SPEAKER_08: Sure.
- 25:26SPEAKER_08: His dad said, Well, in the draft, which we had to fight.
- 25:29SPEAKER_08: Oh, sure.
- 25:29SPEAKER_08: I mean, that's what I kind of wanted this episode to actually like emphasize is you battle Bama others for Jack.
- 25:38SPEAKER_08: Once you get them committed and signed, then you battle that 30 MLB clubs, which we had to do this summer.
- 25:44SPEAKER_08: And part of the reason your dad's probably like left-handed hitting shortstop that throws, right-handed can run.
- 25:50SPEAKER_08: Those guys are getting really paid in the draft.
- 25:52SPEAKER_08: And I mean, we're sweating it out, which was going to be one of my questions is when you come into summer and you you you know you go through the draft process.
- 26:00SPEAKER_08: How how does your mindset change from okay, I I've accomplished that part, but now it's time to get to work?
- 26:06SPEAKER_08: Because he's gonna be fighting for some some real at bats.
- 26:09SPEAKER_08: I mean, he's had a great fall so far.
- 26:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and I'm not just saying that closer right here.
- 26:13SPEAKER_14: No, I mean I've read the I mean I've seen all the stuff, it's it's gone really well.
- 26:17SPEAKER_14: Well, my mindset kind of threw it all, like there's so much out of my control, and like this was the present moment.
- 26:22SPEAKER_14: I had a plan to come to Tennessee, so that was on my mind the whole time and what I tried to focus on.
- 26:27SPEAKER_14: I got here in the summer and things end up me coming here, which is awesome, and it's just been so great to learn from coaches, develop, and all these things.
- 26:35SPEAKER_14: So I think it's just been a great thing for me that I'm super pumped about.
- 26:38SPEAKER_08: Having such a baseball family and the bloodlines, having gone through some of these processes.
- 26:43SPEAKER_08: How did your dad help you in that process?
- 26:47SPEAKER_14: For sure.
- 26:47SPEAKER_14: I think Ken Dugan as well implemented so many ideas into him, which has been so good.
- 26:52SPEAKER_14: But just a big thing for me is like controlling what I can control, like hustling on the field, working hard, doing all that stuff right, which is what Ken Dugan preached constantly.
- 27:01SPEAKER_14: So, like that's a huge thing for me, just making sure you know the the ins and outs.
- 27:04SPEAKER_14: So that's something me and my dad would always talk about when we're in the cage.
- 27:08SPEAKER_14: You would bring up ideas from him, so it was just stuff like that that would always kind of keep us going for sure.
- 27:14SPEAKER_27: But also, Jack, I would think that background and that sort of internal teaching that you had gives you an advantage that you've seen a lot of stuff, you've played against a lot of dudes.
- 27:24SPEAKER_27: So you come in here maybe not as intimidated as respectful, certainly, but not as intimidated as some freshmen might.
- 27:32SPEAKER_14: I guess you can say that for sure.
- 27:33SPEAKER_14: And also, I think the summer helped me with that as well.
- 27:35SPEAKER_14: You playing these big events, you're playing against good competition, you kind of learn to deal with some failure and stuff like that, which I think is so huge in the college level because it's not gonna be all pretty.
- 27:44SPEAKER_14: So I think just taking that stuff, learning from experiences, and just trying to push yourself in like harder situations, I think has really allowed me to come here and just trying to slow down and just trust your game.
- 27:55SPEAKER_08: So, what's been daily changes, something that you had to major adjust, um, something you really like?
- 28:01SPEAKER_14: I mean, I've enjoyed just the detail we go in in the college level, has been so great.
- 28:05SPEAKER_14: I think just the base running thing is something I need to unlock and understand different types of moves and stuff.
- 28:11SPEAKER_14: So that's something excited about.
- 28:12SPEAKER_14: Also, like kind of playing the outfield, I've enjoyed too.
- 28:14SPEAKER_14: I like center a lot and just trying to help the team in whatever way I can.
- 28:18SPEAKER_14: But I just think the coaching is such a I think I've done a phenomenal job and the film review and just taking little details.
- 28:24SPEAKER_14: So that's what's been that's what I've been really looking forward to.
- 28:27SPEAKER_14: Just the the IQ level of my game has grown.
- 28:30SPEAKER_14: How did you get number eight?
- 28:31SPEAKER_14: I do not know, to be honest.
- 28:32SPEAKER_08: I can't great question because he asked me the same thing.
- 28:35SPEAKER_08: I said, I do not know.
- 28:36SPEAKER_27: Well, but his dad was 44.
- 28:38SPEAKER_27: So you put four and four together.
- 28:39SPEAKER_14: That's it.
- 28:40SPEAKER_14: I mean, I rocked 44 a little bit when I was younger.
- 28:42SPEAKER_14: Did you?
- 28:42SPEAKER_14: But I walked to my locker and eight was there.
- 28:44SPEAKER_14: I was expecting a high.
- 28:45SPEAKER_14: Are you happy with that?
- 28:46SPEAKER_14: I'm very happy.
- 28:46SPEAKER_14: Yeah, single digits.
- 28:47SPEAKER_14: You're expecting 71.
- 28:49SPEAKER_14: I was expecting a little bit up there as a freshman, but I got eight, luckily.
- 28:52SPEAKER_14: So it looks good.
- 28:53SPEAKER_14: I'm not complaining.
- 28:54SPEAKER_27: All right, let's talk about this coming weekend.
- 28:56SPEAKER_27: It's Georgia Tech this weekend, two o'clock.
- 28:59SPEAKER_27: Yep.
- 28:59SPEAKER_08: How great a park is Erlanger?
- 29:01SPEAKER_08: Brand new.
- 29:02SPEAKER_08: It's amazing.
- 29:03SPEAKER_08: It's amazing.
- 29:03SPEAKER_08: If I was a minor leaguer and I had the opportunity to play in that, that would have been awesome.
- 29:08SPEAKER_08: Um, parks were not built like that.
- 29:10SPEAKER_08: It's a major league venue, in my opinion.
- 29:12SPEAKER_08: Um, obviously, there's some things that aren't up to the the major league quality, but it's beautiful.
- 29:18SPEAKER_08: It's not that bad.
- 29:18SPEAKER_08: That's what I'm saying.
- 29:19SPEAKER_08: That's it's more seating size.
- 29:21SPEAKER_08: It's not, it's not, it's beautiful.
- 29:23SPEAKER_08: The surface plays great.
- 29:24SPEAKER_08: Um, and just really excited about against a good team that is kind of a I guess dress rehearsal because we'll play them again in the spring.
- 29:31SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 29:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, so we'll uh we'll throw, you know, obviously we've had some arms that are getting shut down.
- 29:36SPEAKER_08: It's late in the fall.
- 29:37SPEAKER_08: We got some guys that are a little bit banged up, so you'll see some um different lineups and then some different arms, but most of them will be young, and it that's exciting.
- 29:44SPEAKER_08: Guys that are in Jack's class, and and Jack will get to play um, you know, the majority of the game.
- 29:49SPEAKER_08: And it's it's for me, the fall is about the newcomers.
- 29:53SPEAKER_08: It's about the freshmen, it's about making sure that we stay healthy, but also when we go out there, it's learning how to compete the Tennessee way.
- 29:59SPEAKER_27: The show within a show, Kibbs Corner, presented by Calhoun's.
- 30:04SPEAKER_27: This is Jack Dugan, number eight.
- 30:05SPEAKER_27: You can see him Sunday in Chattanooga, two o'clock.
- 30:08SPEAKER_27: Erlanger Park balls against Georgia Tech.
- 30:10SPEAKER_27: We got more of the Mike Keith show right after this.
- 30:12SPEAKER_24: It's time for the Sonic Big Play moment.
- 30:15SPEAKER_28: Turkoff works it up to Eats.
- 30:17SPEAKER_28: Five seconds for Eats to Schmeichel for three.
- 30:22SPEAKER_24: Yes! If you're looking for a meal that's never boring and guarantees fun, look no further than Sonic and the$7 big deal meal.

- 31:12SPEAKER_23: Being at the vault game saved my life.
- 31:15SPEAKER_23: It was a normal day going to the game with my son, but this time it felt like a sledgehammer hit my chest.
- 31:21SPEAKER_23: The UT Medical team knew exactly what they needed to do and just kept me calm throughout the process.
- 31:28SPEAKER_23: It was probably the most serious heart attack that you could have.
- 31:32SPEAKER_23: The team took care of me, worked quickly, efficiently, and I did catch the end of the game.
- 31:38SPEAKER_12: These are the stories of the region's academic health system.
- 32:06SPEAKER_07: Just like you see First Horizon.

- 32:17SPEAKER_30: Small bank hustle.
- 32:18SPEAKER_07: That's First Horizon, the official bank of the Volks, probably serving Tennesseeans for over 160 years.
- 32:27SPEAKER_25: Saturdays are all about the big art.

- 33:45SPEAKER_02: Out of here.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Out of here.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: Out of here.
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: See it out of here.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: As number one, I love winning.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Can't help it.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 34:18SPEAKER_14: Consider I've given the world a take five.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: Luck.
- 34:21SPEAKER_30: It's in my blood.
- 34:23SPEAKER_30: Genetic.
- 34:25SPEAKER_16: Some see a zero.
- 34:27SPEAKER_16: I see a winner's circle.
- 34:34SPEAKER_12: Oh, I'm gonna need a minute.
- 34:36SPEAKER_28: Take five minutes.
- 34:38SPEAKER_28: Choose your numbers, or we'll choose them for you.
- 34:40SPEAKER_28: Either way, it's game-changing fun.
- 34:43SPEAKER_27: Welcome back to the Mike Keith Show, delivered by Uber Eats.
- 34:47SPEAKER_27: It's time for Andy Asks.
- 34:50SPEAKER_27: Presented by First Horizon Bank, official bank of the Vols.
- 34:54SPEAKER_27: Andy, are you prepared to ask?
- 34:57SPEAKER_27: I'm ready.
- 34:57SPEAKER_27: All right, we have questions.
- 34:59SPEAKER_27: We take your questions on the Vol Network text line.
- 35:03SPEAKER_27: It is 865-657-1278.
- 35:08SPEAKER_27: There is no charge for this.
- 35:10SPEAKER_24: Seth from Kingston is asking specifically some baseball questions.
- 35:14SPEAKER_24: Okay.
- 35:14SPEAKER_24: Starting first with a question for you about Kib's corner.
- 35:17SPEAKER_24: He wants to know is that an everything or an every week type of thing, or is this just kind of we're sprinkling it in right now?
- 35:23SPEAKER_24: I know they did a lot with Kiv.
- 35:25SPEAKER_24: You guys did a lot with Kiv in the spring.
- 35:27SPEAKER_27: We'll do it on a weekly basis when we get into baseball action.
- 35:33SPEAKER_27: But we're doing it in the fall because fall ball is a big deal.
- 35:36SPEAKER_27: Yep.
- 35:37SPEAKER_27: And Tennessee fans love baseball.
- 35:40SPEAKER_27: You know, we'll do some of those throughout the course of the fall, but it will be a regular feature, a weekly feature as we get into probably what?
- 35:47SPEAKER_27: Conference play?
- 35:48SPEAKER_27: We say it?
- 35:49SPEAKER_27: Probably right.
- 35:49SPEAKER_24: Yeah, conference play.
- 35:50SPEAKER_24: That makes sense.
- 35:51SPEAKER_24: First full year of Coach Elander is an offseason.
- 35:54SPEAKER_24: So it looked a lot different this time last year.
- 35:56SPEAKER_27: You know, it's really, it's really interesting because Josh, as as we speak right now in the first week in November, Josh had just taken over the program.
- 36:05SPEAKER_27: And you think about that, and then Josh went into the spring, and you know, Tennessee went 15 and 15 in conference play, made a regional, all of those sorts of things.
- 36:15SPEAKER_27: But that was difficult.
- 36:17SPEAKER_27: And so then he had the offseason to recruit and put together the team that he wanted, did some things with his staff.
- 36:25SPEAKER_27: Austin Knight comes in as the pitching coach.
- 36:28SPEAKER_27: Who was on Kim's corner?
- 36:29SPEAKER_27: He was on Kim's corner.
- 36:30SPEAKER_27: That's right.
- 36:30SPEAKER_27: That's great.
- 36:31SPEAKER_27: And so, yeah, I mean, in some ways, this is this is realistically Josh E.
- 36:36SPEAKER_27: Lander's first year.
- 36:37SPEAKER_24: Yeah.
- 36:38SPEAKER_27: It's certainly his first full year.
- 36:39SPEAKER_24: Good way to look at it.
- 36:40SPEAKER_24: Okay, on the football.
- 36:41SPEAKER_24: Football.
- 36:42SPEAKER_24: Looking back, Jim from Knoxville.
- 36:43SPEAKER_27: Jim from Knoxville.
- 36:44SPEAKER_24: Wants to know what is the supposed advantage if all the receivers are on the line of scrimmage?
- 36:49SPEAKER_24: He doesn't like that rule and thinks it needs to go away.
- 36:52SPEAKER_27: Well, because you can only have you know seven men on the line of scrimmage is all you could do.
- 36:58SPEAKER_27: I mean, there are a lot of people who feel that way, that that should go away, that that's an ancient rule, that you can't have five in the backfield and you know, all of that.
- 37:07SPEAKER_27: But the rule is you have to have seven men on the line of scrimmage, and you can't have more.
- 37:13SPEAKER_27: Um, so that's just the way it goes.
- 37:15SPEAKER_27: That's the design of the game.
- 37:17SPEAKER_24: There has to be some rule or else it's kind of chaos, right?
- 37:21SPEAKER_27: Well, I mean, you can't why it was set up like that, I don't know.
- 37:26SPEAKER_24: But why are there eleven guys on the field?
- 37:27SPEAKER_27: Right, there are eleven guys on the field instead of 13.
- 37:31SPEAKER_27: I yeah, those were the the rules of play.
- 37:33SPEAKER_24: This is this is an Andy question, actually.
- 37:35SPEAKER_24: Andy, Andy I was curious about yes, Andy is asking here, what what is your opinion about this timing of the bye week for Tennessee, maybe as compared to a different time?
- 37:43SPEAKER_24: What what is the most advantageous time?
- 37:46SPEAKER_24: Obviously Right in the middle.
- 37:47SPEAKER_24: Yeah.
- 37:48SPEAKER_27: I mean, right in the middle, you would you would think you know, in some ways you could make the case that right in the middle is sometime in early August because you really start full-scale practice right around the first of August.
- 38:01SPEAKER_27: Uh but you know, middle October you would think is probably the best because you get another week to potentially get guys back from injury.
- 38:10SPEAKER_27: It's one of the things that worried me about playing South Carolina with Lenora Sellers was that it was a good matchup for Carolina because they'd had a bye week.
- 38:21SPEAKER_24: Yeah, fresh off the by.
- 38:22SPEAKER_27: And they have Sellers, the big quarterback who can really run, and you're playing against a Tennessee team that hasn't had a buy and has had four straight bang up games.
- 38:33SPEAKER_27: The same way, I thought Tennessee had an advantage over Alabama because Alabama was coming off a very physical game against Georgia.
- 38:42SPEAKER_27: So the schedule works this way for everybody.
- 38:44SPEAKER_27: It's not just related to Tennessee, but in certain instances, I mean, if that's the case, then if you're South Carolina, you've got to take advantage of it, and they did.
- 38:55SPEAKER_27: If you're Tennessee against Alabama, you've got to take advantage of it, and they did.
- 38:59SPEAKER_27: I think it will be more interesting next year to see how teams respond to a second buy with us moving back to week zero the season starting in August.
- 39:11SPEAKER_24: Okay, so this weekend, obviously Kentucky in town, dark mode as announced last Friday.
- 39:16SPEAKER_24: Uh Philip from Shelbyville wants to know.
- 39:18SPEAKER_24: Philip from Shelbyville.
- 39:20SPEAKER_24: Are you a fan of Dark Mode?
- 39:21SPEAKER_24: I love Dark Mode so much.
- 39:22SPEAKER_24: Why?
- 39:23SPEAKER_27: I love dark mode so much.
- 39:24SPEAKER_27: Yeah.
- 39:24SPEAKER_27: First of all, I'm a Johnny Cash fan.
- 39:26SPEAKER_27: So I like black.
- 39:28SPEAKER_27: So, you know, that's a whole thing.
- 39:30SPEAKER_27: Um I'm always like the color black and I like how teams look in black.
- 39:35SPEAKER_27: But at the same time, I think what's really so important about this is for people like you, Andy, people under 30, this is yours.
- 39:47SPEAKER_27: And you think about all of the things General Nealin did through his many decades being involved with the program, uh, Coach Dickey coming in and putting the T's on the helmet, having the team run through the T and the checkerboard end zones, Coach Majors, the many things he did, including bringing in the ball walk, Coach Fulmer instituted certain things as well.
- 40:09SPEAKER_27: Uh this is this generation's thing.
- 40:13SPEAKER_27: You own it.
- 40:14SPEAKER_24: Yeah.
- 40:15SPEAKER_27: The people who have been in school during this time, this is yours.
- 40:18SPEAKER_27: And someday your kids will go to school here and they'll be doing dark mode and you'll say, We started that.
- 40:25SPEAKER_27: I think everybody has to have ownership of tradition.
- 40:29SPEAKER_27: And I'm sure in 1964, when Doug Dickey put the T's on the helmet, there were people who said, Well, show boats, they put T's on the helmets trying to be fancy pants people, and you know, and it's like it anytime you make a change or you do something different, there's a section of people who think the old light bulb was better.
- 40:50SPEAKER_27: I get it.
- 40:51SPEAKER_27: And I and I respect tradition, but at the same time, you always have to continue to evolve.
- 40:56SPEAKER_27: And I think it's fun to see this generation of all fans have their thing and embrace it in such a way, and this is why I really like it, that they make it effective for the football team.
- 41:10SPEAKER_27: The players like it, it's good for recruiting, that's cool, but the student body knows that when it goes dark mode Saturday night, they know what they're supposed to do.
- 41:20SPEAKER_27: And they are a 12th man, they do make a difference, and I I think that's something you want to have.
- 41:28SPEAKER_27: I you know, I want to win every game, but I especially want to win every game at home.
- 41:33SPEAKER_27: Yeah.
- 41:33SPEAKER_27: And you know, it gives you an advantage, so do it.
- 41:37SPEAKER_27: And it's fun.
- 41:38SPEAKER_24: Hey, that is Tennessee tradition.
- 41:40SPEAKER_24: That is honoring the past, but being on the cutting edge.
- 41:43SPEAKER_27: Being on the cutting edge, and the fact, I mean, let's face it too, um what is it, 37 million hits on social media every year, which is a big deal in a lot of different ways, including just for the university.
- 41:59SPEAKER_27: Because if I'm a prospective student, I say I want to be a part of that.
- 42:02SPEAKER_27: That's the place.
- 42:03SPEAKER_27: Which is also why I think they let the students, I mean, the students didn't really storm the field so much after the game as they just got to come on the field after the game.
- 42:12SPEAKER_27: They got to make a memory.
- 42:13SPEAKER_27: They got to make a memory out on the field.
- 42:16SPEAKER_27: I mean, those sorts of things you remember for the rest of your life, and it also helps you sell everything you're doing.
- 42:23SPEAKER_27: Let's take a look at dark mode when we come back.
- 42:26SPEAKER_27: A sneak peek from inside the orange of how dark mode happens.
- 42:31SPEAKER_27: And Alicia Longworth, deputy athletic director and chief marketing officer, teases us about what's going to be new Saturday night against Kentucky.
- 42:41SPEAKER_27: That's next on the Mike Keith Show, delivered by Uber Eats.
- 42:45SPEAKER_28: Getting you ready for the game, the Mike Keith Show, delivered by Uber Eats.
- 42:50SPEAKER_28: This is your ball network.
- 42:55SPEAKER_27: Tennessee has worn black jerseys on and off for 17 years, but dark mode truly became a thing in this decade.
- 43:05SPEAKER_27: Putting together dark mode is massive.
- 43:09SPEAKER_27: We go inside the orange for a sneak peek at how it happens.
- 43:13SPEAKER_27: Presented by Google Gemini, official Gen AI partner of Tennessee Athletics.
- 43:21SPEAKER_26: Everyone was thrilled when this one was selected for a night game and was elated that Leland Stadium's dark mode was activated.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: Hello.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: Yes, it'll put bring you into the loading dock, and it's on the river side of the stadium.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: Alright, so it's 9 o'clock, six months just called.
- 43:40SPEAKER_03: They are about 10 miles away.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: So as soon as the truck gets here, we'll unload everything, um, get everything where it needs to be, and get started on the installation.
- 43:49SPEAKER_11: Basically, it acts like a standard TV remote.
- 43:51SPEAKER_11: We send signals from the console saying light up red, light up green, light up blue, or light up white, or a different other color.
- 44:00SPEAKER_11: And we can also send signals saying, you know, like blink, uh, flash, drope.
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: So today we received the lights and we are attaching them to the palms for the dance team.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: Um, we have 42 palms for 21 dancers, and we're attaching lights to them today for the light show that we are doing Saturday.
- 44:21SPEAKER_03: So essentially they took the stencil that they used to paint the power tee and um broke it into boards.
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: So we have 22 boards that are painted white that are gonna blend in with the tee that we'll put out pre-game for this.
- 44:36SPEAKER_03: There's about 130 lights that are going down on 22 different boards to spread out the length of the power tee.
- 44:43SPEAKER_31: So they told us that we have less than three minutes to get it out there and set it up, and then less than a minute to disassemble it and bring it back off the field.
- 44:54SPEAKER_22: Rocky tap.
- 44:55SPEAKER_22: After Rocky Top, do weather, which is 30 seconds.
- 44:58SPEAKER_22: Sportsmanship is 55, so that's a minute 30.
- 45:01SPEAKER_22: And then I got another video that's 140, so that's like three minutes.
- 45:05SPEAKER_19: Chelsea, what is the easiest way, like even for us to get on the count?
- 45:11SPEAKER_19: Four eight counts to get off the field.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: I mean there's no run.
- 45:14SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 45:15SPEAKER_19: So we're gonna we're gonna count you down.
- 45:17SPEAKER_19: You're gonna have four, eight counts to get out and get set into your formation and be still.
- 45:23SPEAKER_19: Is everyone good?
- 45:24SPEAKER_19: We're gonna practice that before we have the music.
- 45:26SPEAKER_19: Five, six, seven, go.
- 45:28SPEAKER_19: One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, hey.
- 45:32SPEAKER_22: When spirit comes on, they stay on.
- 45:34SPEAKER_22: So they're like not their spirit will come on, and then they're everything they're wearing, all their notice will stay lit.
- 45:42SPEAKER_22: The T, there was a few points where we're gonna have that do something if that programmatically works.
- 45:47SPEAKER_04: Are these the palms you're bringing to practice today?
- 45:49SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 45:50SPEAKER_04: So we need to keep them so we can put lots in them like the dancers.
- 45:54SPEAKER_22: This is uh great way to start a big orange Friday.
- 45:57SPEAKER_18: The idea for an inclusion of Spirit in the Lake Show was brought to us kind of early in the season, and so it was something that was on the back burner that we knew if we had the opportunity for a night game and all the stars aligned, that we would be able to create something really cool and impactful and something different that hasn't been seen in college sports.
- 46:14SPEAKER_15: Yeah, for dark mode, it's it is a lot different than what we're typically used to because we can't really simulate what dark mode looks like.
- 46:21SPEAKER_15: So the only students that really have an idea of what dark mode is like are the students that were in the pride last year.
- 46:26SPEAKER_15: So it's one of those things where the first time they're gonna really experience it is when they're on the field and the lights get turned off.
- 46:32SPEAKER_15: And then it's go time.
- 46:33SPEAKER_15: So very quick adjustment period.
- 46:35SPEAKER_15: So, really, we do a lot of mental work behind the scene of explaining when they're gonna go off, trying to get them prepared so that they're at least mentally ready for when those lights are gonna switch off.
- 46:43SPEAKER_15: But until the happens, you never really know.
- 46:46SPEAKER_26: Two of college football's greatest programs will battle about tonight on fields what can steal.
- 46:51SPEAKER_31: I go on college football road trips all over the country.
- 46:55SPEAKER_31: I've been to about 45 different places.
- 46:57SPEAKER_31: First time in Knoxville.
- 46:58SPEAKER_31: The students, the fans, they make it.
- 47:00SPEAKER_31: That's why I love college sports.
- 47:02SPEAKER_31: And you got a hundred and something thousand in there.
- 47:04SPEAKER_31: Can't wait to get in.
- 47:05SPEAKER_31: I love like spooky rocket copies.
- 47:07SPEAKER_11: I mean, just the whole atmosphere of Neil Stadium.
- 47:09SPEAKER_11: It doesn't get any better.
- 47:11SPEAKER_13: I mean, come on, yes, Neil Stadium! Of course, of course I'm excited about the atmosphere.
- 47:15SPEAKER_13: I'm excited about the fans, I'm excited to see, hey, them running through the tea, excited about the net, running, give them some.
- 47:37SPEAKER_09: We always debate college football, the atmospheres are great.
- 47:40SPEAKER_09: Where's the best?
- 47:41SPEAKER_09: Somebody's gonna tell you if you get a chance to go and they're ranked, and the opponent they're playing is ranked, going to Knoxville is an electric, as good as there is an atmosphere.
- 48:08SPEAKER_27: Tremendous look at the evolution of dark mode, and here to put a cherry on top is the University of Tennessee's Deputy Athletic Director and Chief Marketing Officer, Alicia Longworth.
- 48:19SPEAKER_27: Welcome.
- 48:19SPEAKER_27: Thank you.
- 48:20SPEAKER_27: Welcome to Dark Mode.
- 48:22SPEAKER_29: Only get to make a guest appearance on Dark Mode Week.
- 48:24SPEAKER_29: It's your favorite.
- 48:25SPEAKER_27: You can host if you want.
- 48:28SPEAKER_27: Let's talk about game day presentation.
- 48:29SPEAKER_27: How different is dark mode game day presentation from normal game day presentation?
- 48:35SPEAKER_29: I mean, you've realized this.
- 48:36SPEAKER_29: Every game is a new script, every game is a new canvas.
- 48:40SPEAKER_29: Um, but dark mode's really probably what started that.
- 48:43SPEAKER_29: That um it was the first one that we really took to a different level, complete new graphics package, complete new feel to what we were doing, lights, music, just the whole thing.
- 48:55SPEAKER_29: So over the last five years it's been really fun to see how this has evolved and where it's going.
- 48:59SPEAKER_29: Um I think everybody circles it on their calendar, right?
- 49:02SPEAKER_29: They they get excited about dark mode and what are they gonna wear and what is our creative team gonna do?
- 49:07SPEAKER_29: So um everything's new.
- 49:10SPEAKER_29: But we did everything new for the Smoky Gray game this year for General Neal.
- 49:14SPEAKER_29: We've just gotten to a point that every single game is its own unique experience.
- 49:18SPEAKER_27: How would you describe the overall evolution of the dark mode package and the dark mode game?
- 49:24SPEAKER_29: It's really what we want from an entertainment side.
- 49:27SPEAKER_29: Um it's really, I think when we got here and the folks that were here and we dreamed about, when Danny said, Hey, we want to be the best at N-Venue Entertainment, right?
- 49:38SPEAKER_29: Danny gives us that charge on every level.
- 49:40SPEAKER_29: Whether it's ticket sales or the Mike Keith show or whatever it is that we're doing, we want to be the best at it.
- 49:46SPEAKER_29: Um I think where we have reached with dark mode is what in our mind we consider the best, right?
- 49:52SPEAKER_29: It's every single element that goes into game day.
- 49:55SPEAKER_29: There's something new and unique about it that's a little innovative, that's a little edgy, that's a little different, that keeps people guessing.
- 50:02SPEAKER_29: There's been a new element that we've done for it every single year, and we do have a new element coming this year.
- 50:08SPEAKER_29: Um that has just been fun and exciting, right?
- 50:11SPEAKER_29: It's about the game and gets people to show up in Nealand and be loud and turn Nealand into the Nealand effect, but it also gives them another entertainment piece to show up and do.
- 50:20SPEAKER_27: But you just said something interesting.
- 50:22SPEAKER_27: There's something new.
- 50:23SPEAKER_27: Give us any sneak peek that you would give us into Saturday night's dark mode against Kentucky.
- 50:29SPEAKER_29: So it like I said, it's always been like the next big thing.
- 50:33SPEAKER_29: So the first year was turning the lights out, lighting up the tee when the team ran out.
- 50:37SPEAKER_29: The next year was lights go down when the band formed the tee to walk up and they had the lights on their hats that turned into the the power tee.
- 50:47SPEAKER_29: Um last year we lit up the power tee um at midfield.
- 50:53SPEAKER_29: So when the lights are out and we've got the intro going and there's all the mini things happening, there's gonna be a new element to it.
- 51:01SPEAKER_29: So another little surprise.
- 51:03SPEAKER_27: Nice.
- 51:03SPEAKER_27: Yes.
- 51:04SPEAKER_29: The team's been excited about that.
- 51:06SPEAKER_27: But you promise spooky Rocky Top is back.
- 51:08SPEAKER_27: Always.
- 51:09SPEAKER_27: And you're incorporating spooky Rocky Top into other moments too.
- 51:13SPEAKER_29: We are.
- 51:14SPEAKER_29: It um like what a cool special thing that the University of Tennessee has now.
- 51:21SPEAKER_29: Um the backstory of Miles Kreditch creating it and being Coach Kreditch's son and what music's meant to their whole family, um, and then how our fans react to it, right?
- 51:32SPEAKER_29: They it just takes them to another level.
- 51:33SPEAKER_29: It's like they hear it, they know what it is, and then the beat drops and they get even louder.
- 51:39SPEAKER_29: Um it's it's a really cool.
- 51:40SPEAKER_29: Oh, it's a cue.
- 51:41SPEAKER_29: It is.
- 51:42SPEAKER_29: It's a really good thing.
- 51:44SPEAKER_27: Yeah.
- 51:44SPEAKER_29: And we need you to take it to the next level.
- 51:46SPEAKER_27: All right, take it to the next level Saturday night.
- 51:48SPEAKER_27: Alicia Longworth with us here.
- 51:51SPEAKER_27: Dark mode Saturday night.
- 51:52SPEAKER_27: Remember, kickoff is set for 6 15-ish Eastern time.
- 51:56SPEAKER_27: We're on the Ball Radio Network beginning at 3 30 Eastern with Inside Tennessee Football.
- 52:01SPEAKER_27: That's Bill Beo, Jason Swain, Brent Hubbs, Larry Stone, and uh the whole crew.
- 52:07SPEAKER_27: Big day on the Ball Radio Network for Tennessee, Kentucky, the historic rivalry.
- 52:12SPEAKER_28: For Alicia Longworth, I'm Mike Keith, and we'll see you full access all week long to the latest from the Tennessee campus, the Mike Keith Show, online, delivered by Uber Eats at utsports.com.
- 52:27SPEAKER_28: We are the Law Network.
