- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, it's Phil Henry with another Radio Archive Hour from
- 0:02Speaker 1: our great website, philhenryshow.com, where we have thousands of hours
- 0:08Speaker 1: of great archived radio, classic Radio Hall of Fame material.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And we have one today for you from October of
- 0:13Speaker 1: 2000 featuring our favorite guy, our favorite pilot. Who wouldn't
- 0:17Speaker 1: want to fly with Art Griego? Who wouldn't want to
- 0:19Speaker 1: hear him get on the speaker there at night as
- 0:22Speaker 1: you're taken off from wherever and there's Art saying, hey,
- 0:24Speaker 1: it's Art Griego. We're on our way into Goblin Land.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 0:27Speaker 1: Here is Art joining the program to talk about a
- 0:29Speaker 1: jet that had gone down in Singapore, and he explains
- 0:31Speaker 1: that it's dangerous to fly, and this was around Halloween,
- 0:33Speaker 1: by the way. It's dangerous to fly on Halloween, and
- 0:37Speaker 1: why some pilots see gremlins on the wings of planes.
- 0:42Speaker 3: Art Griego.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Art Griego joins us from his home in Santa Monica, California.
- 0:46Speaker 1: I'm going to talk to Art this hour about flying
- 0:50Speaker 1: and about yet another air disaster, Art.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely, Phil. The other thing is it's another air disaster.
- 0:57Speaker 4: As fate would have it, we've got another air disaster
- 0:59Speaker 4: on Halloween.
- 1:01Speaker 3: When was the Egypt Air? That was a year ago,
- 1:02Speaker 3: wasn't it?
- 1:02Speaker 4: The Egypt Air was a year ago. That's right, Phil.
- 1:05Speaker 4: And I had... Boy, I'll tell you, I thought I'd
- 1:08Speaker 4: put that one to rest, because I remember for months
- 1:12Speaker 4: after Egypt Air went down, I talked to my wife,
- 1:16Speaker 4: and I can remember just being alone in my office,
- 1:19Speaker 4: and I was typing some memos, and I had some
- 1:21Speaker 4: work to get done, and then I would stop, and
- 1:24Speaker 4: just out of the blue, I would say... why, why,
- 1:28Speaker 4: why were they flying on Halloween? And I, you know,
- 1:31Speaker 4: so many people who don't understand.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Is there a statistic you had relative to Halloween flights?
- 1:36Speaker 4: Yeah. It's crazy. 37% fatalities in air disasters occur more. 37%
- 1:45Speaker 4: more fatalities in air disasters occur on Halloween than the
- 1:48Speaker 4: rest of the year.
- 1:49Speaker 1: All right, now, before we get into anything crazy here,
- 1:51Speaker 1: we're not saying that there's.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Anything inherently wrong with Halloween.
- 1:54Speaker 4: It's just....
- 1:55Speaker 3: You're saying that flying on Halloween is a little unsafe, right?
- 1:59Speaker 4: I think, Phil, it's a little more than unsafe. I
- 2:01Speaker 4: think that pilots can be a little bit worried about things.
- 2:07Speaker 4: You know, let me tell you this. I don't believe
- 2:10Speaker 4: in goblins. I don't believe in ghosts or anything like that.
- 2:14Speaker 4: But here you are on Halloween. You've got 350 souls
- 2:18Speaker 4: that you're responsible for. You're looking at about a 16-hour
- 2:21Speaker 4: air leg. Maybe you've had some sleep. Maybe you're a
- 2:26Speaker 4: little tired. You know it's Halloween. Ordinarily, you wouldn't believe
- 2:30Speaker 4: in crazy things. But are you willing to take the
- 2:32Speaker 4: chance that on this night of nights, you might suck
- 2:36Speaker 4: a witch or a vampire into that engine turbine? Are
- 2:38Speaker 4: you willing to take that chance that a gremlin's on
- 2:40Speaker 4: the way? You understand what I'm... Yeah, okay.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Let's slow down for a minute here, okay?
- 2:43Speaker 4: No, but do you understand what I'm saying?
- 2:45Speaker 3: No, I don't.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Well... What I'm trying to say to you is.
- 2:49Speaker 3: You don't believe that witches are flying around?
- 2:52Speaker 4: No, I do not. Of course I don't. But I'm saying,
- 2:55Speaker 4: when you're flying on Halloween, you know you've got a
- 2:58Speaker 4: high percentage of air fatalities. What are you thinking?
- 3:03Speaker 3: What am I thinking?
- 3:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I guess I'm thinking I better be careful.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Of course. But then what's the other thought?
- 3:09Speaker 1: Art, if you're asking me, am I worried that I'm
- 3:10Speaker 1: going to suck a vampire into a.
- 3:13Speaker 4: You don't know... I'm going to tell you a little story, Phil,
- 3:16Speaker 4: and just... I can safely say, and I'm not a pilot...
- 3:20Speaker 4: That's a key phrase. Say that again.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I'm not a pilot.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Okay, that's a key phrase. I want you to remember that.
- 3:25Speaker 4: You are not a pilot, so you don't really know.
- 3:29Speaker 3: No, all right, but I'm going to say this anyway.
- 3:30Speaker 1: There's no vampires or witches that are going to get
- 3:33Speaker 1: sucked into an engine turbine.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Okay, and I'm with you on that, and I agree
- 3:36Speaker 4: with you on that. What I'm saying is, on Halloween,
- 3:40Speaker 4: if you're a pilot and you're afraid, and you know
- 3:42Speaker 4: that there are more fatalities on Halloween... Why take a chance?
- 3:46Speaker 3: Why take a chance of what? Of sucking a witch
- 3:49Speaker 3: into the engine?
- 3:52Speaker 4: Why wouldn't you stay grounded? No, no, no.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Answer my question, okay?
- 3:56Speaker 4: Why wouldn't you stay grounded?
- 3:57Speaker 3: No, answer my question. Why take a chance of what?
- 4:01Speaker 4: I'm saying to you that it's Halloween. You're not a pilot,
- 4:07Speaker 4: so you don't know what we're going through here. You
- 4:10Speaker 4: got a witch... I don't know, Phil. I'm worried. I
- 4:13Speaker 4: feel for these people. I'm trying to come up with
- 4:15Speaker 4: some answers.
- 4:16Speaker 1: All right, well, if we're trying to come up with
- 4:17Speaker 1: some answers for Singapore, for the Singapore air jet that
- 4:20Speaker 1: went down, I think we need to stop at they
- 4:22Speaker 1: sucked a goblin into their engine, and let's start talking.
- 4:25Speaker 4: Phil, I'm doing that. What I'm trying to say to
- 4:28Speaker 4: you is a pilot's mindset.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Okay, well, from a.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Pilot's mindset, if he's worried about a goblin getting sucked
- 4:33Speaker 1: into the engine, what do you think about that?
- 4:35Speaker 4: What I'm saying to you is I would rather stay
- 4:37Speaker 4: grounded than take the chance. Let me tell you a story, okay?
- 4:40Speaker 3: Well, you still haven't answered my question.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Let me just tell you a story. A little story, Phil,
- 4:44Speaker 4: about a B-17.
- 4:45Speaker 5: Well, hold on.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Let me give the phone number here. We're talking with
- 4:47Speaker 1: Art Griego about Singapore Air. Our number is 1-800-449-8686.
- 4:50Speaker 4: 1-800-449-8686.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Art Griego is a pilot.
- 4:56Speaker 3: You did fly commercially, right, Art?
- 4:58Speaker 4: That is correct.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And now you are flying basically privately.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yes.
- 5:03Speaker 3: And we are talking about the Singapore air jet that crashed.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Singapore Airlines Flight 006 crashed during takeoff. It was Los
- 5:11Speaker 1: Angeles bound. It was United States bound at the time
- 5:13Speaker 1: of the crash. All right, you have a story.
- 5:15Speaker 4: I've got a little story here about a B-17. And
- 5:19Speaker 4: it was flying out of San Diego in 1941. All
- 5:23Speaker 4: hell broke loose on Pearl Harbor. On what? On Pearl Harbor.
- 5:28Speaker 4: The pilot of the plane and the crew were directed
- 5:31Speaker 4: to Guam. They could not land at Pearl Harbor. The
- 5:33Speaker 4: Japanese were bombing Pearl. They could only refuel on Guam.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Once they landed, they were directed to take off immediately,
- 5:40Speaker 4: get the hell out of there, because the Japanese were
- 5:43Speaker 4: also closing on Guam with a fairly significant flotilla and
- 5:48Speaker 4: with a fleet of fighter jets, fighter planes, I should say.
- 5:50Speaker 4: So they went on to Manila. No sleep, 16 hours
- 5:54Speaker 4: of flying. Let me tell you what happens to a pilot, Phil,
- 5:57Speaker 4: when he's had no sleep and he's been flying for
- 5:59Speaker 4: about 16, 17 hours. You start to see things, and
- 6:02Speaker 4: one of the things that you see are what we
- 6:04Speaker 4: call little manor gremlins.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Okay, I know that.
- 6:06Speaker 4: You know that from hearing a lot of World War
- 6:08Speaker 4: II flyers, right?
- 6:09Speaker 3: That's correct.
- 6:09Speaker 5: All right.
- 6:12Speaker 4: This pilot made the decision, as he looked out on
- 6:14Speaker 4: the wing and he could see gremlins, fooling with the engine.
- 6:19Speaker 4: He made a decision. He had nine crewmen that he
- 6:22Speaker 4: was responsible for. B-17, Flying Fortress, complement, nine men. He
- 6:27Speaker 4: had nine men he was responsible for. He made the decision.
- 6:31Speaker 4: He could see Gremlins messing with the engine.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:34Speaker 4: They bailed out, and they sent that B-17. That's about
- 6:38Speaker 4: $ 4 million worth of machinery, World War II dollars. They
- 6:41Speaker 4: sent that B-17 into the Pacific. A PB-4 patrol plane
- 6:45Speaker 4: picked him up about two hours later. He saved the
- 6:48Speaker 4: lives of his crewmen. He made a split-second decision. Hold on.
- 6:53Speaker 4: I want to tell you the name of that guy.
- 6:55Speaker 3: Okay.
- 6:56Speaker 4: The guy's name was Colonel Jack Griego, United States Air Force.
- 6:59Speaker 4: He was my father. And I am proud of him,
- 7:04Speaker 4: and you bet I am proud of him. I would
- 7:07Speaker 4: have flown that distance in service to my country, and
- 7:11Speaker 4: you bet I'm not going to believe that nine men
- 7:14Speaker 4: thought there was a gremlin on the wing. They'd been
- 7:18Speaker 4: flying a long time. They were tired. It was common
- 7:21Speaker 4: for flyers to claim they were seeing things. Why tempt fate?
- 7:26Speaker 3: All right.
- 7:27Speaker 1: The story you just told me is your father, and
- 7:29Speaker 1: God bless him and his service to our country.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Took a perfectly good B-17 and sent it into the
- 7:35Speaker 1: Pacific Ocean.
- 7:38Speaker 4: What?
- 7:39Speaker 3: Thinking that there were gremlins on the wing, screwing with
- 7:42Speaker 3: the engine, and.
- 7:43Speaker 4: He saved the lives of nine men, Mr. Hendry.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And I understand that he had nine crewmen.
- 7:49Speaker 1: That was the Flying Fortress B-17. He'd been directed out
- 7:52Speaker 1: of Pearl. Obviously, they wanted to keep that plane in
- 7:55Speaker 1: action for the war.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Yeah, that's correct. But what was he going to do,
- 7:58Speaker 4: kill men? Kill them?
- 8:00Speaker 3: How were they going to die?
- 8:02Speaker 4: He was seeing things. He was seeing gremlins on the wing.
- 8:06Speaker 4: They were getting into the engine compartment.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Gremlins were getting into the engine?
- 8:10Speaker 1: I can understand that he was so tired he decided
- 8:12Speaker 1: to bail out because he was afraid he was going
- 8:14Speaker 1: to crash the plane.
- 8:16Speaker 3: But if that was the case, did he have a co-pilot? Mr.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Henry, you've got to back it way down.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Did he have a co-pilot?
- 8:21Speaker 4: No, hold on for a minute. You're talking about my father.
- 8:23Speaker 4: So back it way down.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Did he have a co-pilot?
- 8:26Speaker 4: Yes, he did.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Was the co-pilot okay?
- 8:30Speaker 4: I don't know. What's that got to do with it?
- 8:31Speaker 4: If you're looking at men on the wing.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Okay, so the little green men on the wing were
- 8:35Speaker 3: going to destroy the plane.
- 8:36Speaker 4: I'm saying I don't believe in gremlins, I don't believe
- 8:39Speaker 4: in witches, but do you take the chance? My father
- 8:41Speaker 4: didn't take the chance. I have used that my entire
- 8:44Speaker 4: life as my guidance. If I think I can suck
- 8:49Speaker 4: a witch into a... I guess you don't get it,
- 8:52Speaker 4: do you?
- 8:53Speaker 1: No, I guess I don't, although I do honor your
- 8:56Speaker 1: father's service to our country, and he bailed out of
- 8:59Speaker 1: the B-17... I suppose it crashed?
- 9:02Speaker 4: Uh-huh. You can't, you know, no pilot.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Okay. So they lost a B-17 and the men were fine?
- 9:08Speaker 4: The men were picked up by a patrol plane, yeah.
- 9:10Speaker 3: All right. Can you hold on?
- 9:13Speaker 4: Sure.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Am I alone here? His father was flying a B-17, WW2.
- 9:21Speaker 3: He sees gremlins on the wing. Now, which is very common.
- 9:24Speaker 1: If you know anything about pilots, especially pilots that flew
- 9:26Speaker 1: long distances, and especially in World War II, the pilots
- 9:28Speaker 1: would complain they were seeing things because they didn't have
- 9:31Speaker 1: any sleep. And they saw what they called little men,
- 9:35Speaker 1: little green men on the wings. A lot of pilots
- 9:36Speaker 1: would report gremlins. They were seeing them. This man's telling
- 9:41Speaker 1: me his father believed gremlins were screwing with the engine,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and we all saw the Twilight Zone. That Twilight Zone
- 9:46Speaker 1: episode was based upon real reports of gremlins during World
- 9:50Speaker 1: War II, where these guys were seeing things. This guy's
- 9:53Speaker 1: father bailed out of a flying fortress with nine other
- 9:56Speaker 1: crew members, watched that thing go into the Pacific, because
- 9:59Speaker 1: he was afraid the little green man was going to get.
- 10:02Speaker 3: The engine messed up. And now he's saying, don't fly
- 10:07Speaker 3: on Halloween, you'll suck a vampire into your engine.
- 10:11Speaker 1: This is The Phil Henry Show. 1-800-449-8686, Phil Henry Show.
- 10:18Speaker 1: On the line with me is Art Griego. We're talking
- 10:20Speaker 1: about the Singapore air jet that went down. And the
- 10:24Speaker 1: last thing we heard was that there were some, I
- 10:26Speaker 1: don't know, 65 people who were killed in this crash.
- 10:31Speaker 1: And you are basically saying, Art, that it's dangerous to
- 10:34Speaker 1: fly on Halloween.
- 10:36Speaker 4: It's dangerous, Phil, because we've got statistics that prove 37%
- 10:40Speaker 4: more fatalities in air disasters occur than the rest of
- 10:45Speaker 4: the year. And I don't think.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but you're also saying there's a possibility that we're
- 10:50Speaker 1: going to get goblins, witches.
- 10:51Speaker 3: I.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Am trying to make sure that air travel is as
- 10:55Speaker 4: safe as possible. If a pilot believes that he's going
- 10:59Speaker 4: to suck a goblin or whatever into the... You know,
- 11:02Speaker 4: I don't know what is so difficult.
- 11:03Speaker 1: If a pilot believes he's going to suck a goblin
- 11:05Speaker 1: into the engine, should he be flying?
- 11:09Speaker 4: If he's a good pilot, yes, sir.
- 11:10Speaker 3: All right, here's Tampa on the Phil Hendry Show.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Hello?
- 11:13Speaker 3: Hello?
- 11:15Speaker 4: Hello?
- 11:16Speaker 3: Yes, sir, go ahead.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Well, you know, Mr.
- 11:18Speaker 5: Griego, I don't understand.
- 11:20Speaker 6: If you're a pilot, how could you... How could a
- 11:24Speaker 6: rational adult... Are you a pilot? It doesn't matter if
- 11:28Speaker 6: I'm a pilot.
- 11:29Speaker 4: I'm a caller asking a question here.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I asked him the same question, and he said... You
- 11:33Speaker 3: asked me if I was a pilot.
- 11:35Speaker 4: You're not a pilot. This guy in Tampa's not a pilot.
- 11:37Speaker 4: How could you guys understand what we face? Well, let
- 11:41Speaker 4: me ask you this.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Today, these people died.
- 11:44Speaker 4: It's Halloween.
- 11:46Speaker 6: You say you have some statistics. And all that makes
- 11:49Speaker 6: sense up until the point you're talking about goblins and witches.
- 11:53Speaker 4: That doesn't make sense. What doesn't? If a pilot believes...
- 11:58Speaker 4: I just got done telling you about World War II.
- 12:00Speaker 4: They thought there were gremlins on the wing. You're going
- 12:02Speaker 4: to tell them they're wrong? They're wrong. I mean, there's
- 12:06Speaker 4: no such thing. That's nonsense. Are you going to be
- 12:08Speaker 4: the guy to walk up to them and tell them,
- 12:11Speaker 4: You're not seeing things on the wind. No, I.
- 12:14Speaker 6: What airline do you fly for?
- 12:16Speaker 4: No, I used to fly commercially. I flew for Curtiss
- 12:20Speaker 4: Air out of Florida for about five years, but I'm
- 12:23Speaker 4: basically a pilot pilot, and I do private jumps.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Do they do psychological testing on pilots?
- 12:30Speaker 4: And what are you trying to say now? No, I'm
- 12:33Speaker 4: asking you a question.
- 12:34Speaker 1: No, it's a good question the guy's asking. If a
- 12:36Speaker 1: guy believes he's going to suck a goblin... I'm not.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Going to be the guy. We take a medical exam.
- 12:42Speaker 4: I'll tell you something. A lot of pilots are Vietnam veterans.
- 12:45Speaker 4: I'm not going to be the guy who's going to
- 12:47Speaker 4: talk to these great veterans of armed forces and tell
- 12:50Speaker 4: them they're nuts.
- 12:52Speaker 6: No one's saying that. I just ask, do pilots have
- 12:54Speaker 6: to take a psychological exam?
- 12:56Speaker 4: We take a medical exam, yes, sir.
- 12:58Speaker 6: You're saying medical exam?
- 13:00Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Okay.
- 13:01Speaker 6: I mean, do you have fit for duty? Is that
- 13:03Speaker 6: something that they look into your background? I mean, because
- 13:07Speaker 6: what I'm hearing here is, I'm open to God that
- 13:10Speaker 6: we don't have pilots up in the air flying airliners
- 13:13Speaker 6: to think that there's a potential of sucking a goblin
- 13:16Speaker 6: into the engine.
- 13:18Speaker 4: We don't have that kind of testing for private pilots.
- 13:20Speaker 3: All right, so it's possible.
- 13:25Speaker 6: What you're saying is that it's common for pilots, airline pilots,
- 13:31Speaker 6: to believe these things.
- 13:33Speaker 4: To specifically believe what?
- 13:36Speaker 6: Well, you were saying earlier that these goblins and witches
- 13:41Speaker 6: on Halloween is something that pilots are afraid of. Are
- 13:44Speaker 6: you saying that's representative of the pilot community or just
- 13:48Speaker 6: the people you flew with?
- 13:50Speaker 4: Well, representative of the pilots that I know, yeah.
- 13:53Speaker 3: All right, well, maybe we're now beginning to get a picture.
- 13:55Speaker 4: And what is that supposed to mean?
- 13:57Speaker 3: Well, I'll come right out and say it if the
- 13:58Speaker 3: guy in Tampa doesn't want to. You and your pals
- 14:02Speaker 3: are a little goofy... If you think that.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Hold on for a minute, Phil. I fly with guys
- 14:05Speaker 4: that fought for this country.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I'm not disrespecting their service to the country. But you
- 14:10Speaker 1: just heard the man say, you're flying with guys who
- 14:12Speaker 1: believe that goblins could get sucked up into a jet turbine,
- 14:15Speaker 1: or a witch, or a vampire, or in the case
- 14:18Speaker 1: of your father.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Watch it. You're talking about my dad.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I'm simply saying your father believed there were little green
- 14:25Speaker 1: men on the wing of his B-17 and he bailed
- 14:28Speaker 1: out of his plane, right?
- 14:29Speaker 4: Yeah. Okay, what are you guys saying? Spit it out.
- 14:34Speaker 6: Do they do drug testing, at least?
- 14:37Speaker 4: If you're saying that my old man was on drugs,
- 14:39Speaker 4: it was World War II. Okay? And I don't know
- 14:43Speaker 4: either what the problem you guys are having. I'm saying
- 14:46Speaker 4: that if it's possible a pilot is fearful that there
- 14:50Speaker 4: could be some suckage on Halloween night, why not let
- 14:55Speaker 4: the guy ground the craft? give the night off.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Because you have air travelers, because you have schedules, because
- 15:00Speaker 3: you have people who've bought tickets, because you have a
- 15:02Speaker 3: perfectly fine aircraft that's been checked out, FAA regulated, NTSB regulated,
- 15:08Speaker 3: everybody knows where everybody's going, pilots trained. Why ground aircraft
- 15:13Speaker 3: on Halloween?
- 15:14Speaker 5: Why?
- 15:14Speaker 4: Because you've got pilots up there who may not feel safe.
- 15:17Speaker 3: And why don't they feel safe?
- 15:20Speaker 4: I told you. What?
- 15:21Speaker 6: How would the management of the company that you're working for.
- 15:25Speaker 4: Every Halloween, me and my buddy spend the day at
- 15:28Speaker 4: the Spitfire Bar. What? How would management think if I
- 15:32Speaker 4: believed in goblins?
- 15:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 15:34Speaker 4: I think they'd be all right with that. Yeah, they're...
- 15:38Speaker 4: But we spend the day at the Spitfire Bar in
- 15:40Speaker 4: Santa Monica worrying about all the planes in the sky,
- 15:42Speaker 4: just trying to calm down.
- 15:43Speaker 3: That's good. So you guys are sitting there having a
- 15:44Speaker 3: few pops, huh?
- 15:47Speaker 4: Trying to calm down, yeah.
- 15:48Speaker 3: All right, sir. Thanks for your call. Here is Richmond
- 15:50Speaker 3: on the Phil Henry Show.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Hello.
- 15:52Speaker 7: Hello?
- 15:52Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
- 15:53Speaker 7: Yeah, I've got a question about why you're not allowed
- 15:56Speaker 7: to ask whether or not a pilot is mentally stable
- 16:00Speaker 7: or not if he believes that he's going to suck
- 16:02Speaker 7: a witch into his engine. I think that's a perfectly
- 16:06Speaker 7: valid question to be asked by anyone, whether it's a veteran,
- 16:08Speaker 7: whether they flew in World War.
- 16:10Speaker 4: I, World War II, whatever. They saw gremlins on the wing.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Now you're going to call those guys crazy?
- 16:15Speaker 3: They were hallucinating.
- 16:17Speaker 4: They were hallucinating.
- 16:17Speaker 7: You can't allow somebody to fly a plane if they hallucinate.
- 16:21Speaker 7: And I think if you've got a pilot that's hallucinating
- 16:24Speaker 7: and think there's something on his wing, I think it's
- 16:26Speaker 7: time for him to step down and get out.
- 16:28Speaker 5: Of the cockpit.
- 16:29Speaker 4: That's what my father did.
- 16:31Speaker 7: Yeah, but he took nine of the people that maybe
- 16:33Speaker 7: didn't see the same thing that he did. I think
- 16:35Speaker 7: your father was a middle case.
- 16:37Speaker 4: Sir, that's my father. Please have some respect.
- 16:40Speaker 7: Well, don't give me that respect, baloney, just as a
- 16:45Speaker 7: defense for a silly argument. You're telling me that it's
- 16:48Speaker 7: okay for somebody to jump out of a plane because
- 16:50Speaker 7: he thinks he sees something out the window.
- 16:52Speaker 4: That's nuts.
- 16:53Speaker 7: And I don't care whether your father was in World
- 16:55Speaker 7: War II or whatever. That's just plain crazy.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Let me tell you something. My father said he saw
- 16:59Speaker 4: little green men. He saw little green men.
- 17:02Speaker 7: He may have seen them, but there wasn't any there.
- 17:03Speaker 7: Do you believe there were green men on the wing?
- 17:06Speaker 4: If my father said there were.
- 17:08Speaker 7: Well, they weren't.
- 17:09Speaker 4: I can tell you right now. You don't even know
- 17:10Speaker 4: my dad. You weren't in that plane. How do you know?
- 17:12Speaker 7: Because there is no such thing as little green men
- 17:15Speaker 7: on the wings of planes flying at 500 miles an hour.
- 17:18Speaker 7: If you believe that, you have no business flying a
- 17:21Speaker 7: plane or driving a car or operating machinery of any kind.
- 17:25Speaker 4: Let me ask you a question. What about my argument
- 17:27Speaker 4: about Halloween?
- 17:29Speaker 7: I think it's a silly argument. I don't think Halloween
- 17:33Speaker 7: has anything to do— Halloween' s on the 31st.
- 17:35Speaker 4: If a pilot is afraid of some kind of something
- 17:40Speaker 4: supernatural getting sucked into his engine.
- 17:43Speaker 7: Then there's more pilots to see as your father out
- 17:45Speaker 7: there flying a plane that shouldn't be flying a plane.
- 17:48Speaker 3: And that's the point I've been trying to make.
- 17:49Speaker 4: You're trying to make that, too? Yeah.
- 17:51Speaker 1: If a pilot doesn't want to fly on Halloween for
- 17:53Speaker 1: fear he's going to suck a vampire into his engine,
- 17:57Speaker 1: then he should be grounded. He should have immediate psychological testing.
- 18:01Speaker 3: He probably needs a vacation. And, you know.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Well, I asked the question early on in the hour,
- 18:09Speaker 4: are you a pilot? You said no. This gentleman in Richmond,
- 18:12Speaker 4: are you a pilot? No, you're not.
- 18:13Speaker 5: No.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Okay, so you guys don't.
- 18:16Speaker 7: I can drive a car, and if I drive a
- 18:18Speaker 7: car and see those things, I have no business driving
- 18:20Speaker 7: a car. Being a pilot or not.
- 18:22Speaker 4: You're not going to get a vampire sucked into your
- 18:25Speaker 4: engine at 60 miles an hour.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Oh, I see, but you're going to get a vampire
- 18:28Speaker 3: sucked in.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Oh, now you're laughing at me.
- 18:31Speaker 7: Yeah, because it's funny.
- 18:33Speaker 3: All right, thank you. Hold on.
- 18:36Speaker 1: On the line with us is Art Griego, who believes
- 18:38Speaker 1: that they shouldn't have been flying that Singapore airliner on
- 18:41Speaker 1: Halloween because a vampire could get sucked into the turbine.
- 18:44Speaker 3: It's the Phil Hendry Show.
- 18:45Speaker 2: 1-800-449-8686.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Phil Hendry Show as we continue this.
- 19:01Speaker 1: Really bizarre conversation here with Art Griego, who is a pilot,
- 19:04Speaker 1: a private pilot from Santa Monica, talking to us about
- 19:09Speaker 1: the Singapore air jet that went down and how they
- 19:12Speaker 1: shouldn't have been flying. You made a comment earlier. You
- 19:15Speaker 1: stop in the middle of the day and think about
- 19:17Speaker 1: the Egypt air crash.
- 19:18Speaker 4: Yes, I do.
- 19:20Speaker 3: And what do you think?
- 19:21Speaker 4: I told you, Phil. I think often about the Egypt
- 19:27Speaker 4: air crash.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Yeah, but you said you were stopping.
- 19:29Speaker 4: I'll be... I work, and I'm trying to get something
- 19:34Speaker 4: done at work, and my mind will be a billion
- 19:36Speaker 4: miles away, and all of a sudden I'll stop and
- 19:37Speaker 4: I'll think of Egypt Air. And I said to you earlier,
- 19:40Speaker 4: I said, you know, why were they flying on Halloween?
- 19:43Speaker 4: That's the only question, why? They could have been flying
- 19:46Speaker 4: any other day.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Are you telling me that the Egypt Air jet went down?
- 19:49Speaker 1: because it might have sucked a gremlin into its engine
- 19:52Speaker 1: or something?
- 19:53Speaker 4: I didn't say that, did I?
- 19:55Speaker 3: You're saying why did they fly on Halloween?
- 19:57Speaker 4: I'm saying there is a possibility that flying on Halloween
- 20:03Speaker 4: is dangerous.
- 20:04Speaker 3: That flying on Halloween will get a gremlin sucked into
- 20:06Speaker 3: an engine?
- 20:06Speaker 4: I don't know. But that's what some pilots believe.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Okay, here is Las Vegas on the Phil Hendry Show. Hello.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Yes.
- 20:14Speaker 3: Yes, sir, go ahead.
- 20:16Speaker 5: Yes, I am a commercial 727 captain for a major airline.
- 20:20Speaker 4: God bless you.
- 20:21Speaker 5: I have an ATP typewriter 727 left seat pilot. I
- 20:27Speaker 5: must say that.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Do you experience these fears?
- 20:31Speaker 5: No. In fact, I feel that it's a mockery to
- 20:35Speaker 5: my profession to even profess such.
- 20:39Speaker 5: Among pilots. We do not, as a commercial airline pilot,
- 20:42Speaker 5: even regard such a fear as, well, you know, we
- 20:48Speaker 5: don't even think about it.
- 20:50Speaker 4: You don't think about it, and yet you're going to
- 20:52Speaker 4: sit there telling me you don't know of other pilots
- 20:55Speaker 4: who are frightened of the possibility?
- 20:56Speaker 5: Sir, I have flown with hundreds of pilots as an
- 21:00Speaker 5: airline pilot, and no one, not once, have we ever
- 21:04Speaker 5: discussed the possibility of a little green man on the
- 21:07Speaker 5: wing or a gremlin or goblin being sucked in the
- 21:10Speaker 5: intake of one of our turbines.
- 21:11Speaker 4: All right, can you comment on something then? This was
- 21:13Speaker 4: three years ago, and it was at a major airport,
- 21:15Speaker 4: I will not say. A pilot who was about to
- 21:19Speaker 4: board a 747. He was met with a crew. That
- 21:21Speaker 4: was a flight deck crew. He is wearing a Roman
- 21:25Speaker 4: Catholic priest collar. I asked him why. He said because
- 21:30Speaker 4: of his fear of some kind of vampire.
- 21:33Speaker 3: What, was this Halloween?
- 21:34Speaker 4: It was Halloween night, yeah.
- 21:36Speaker 5: Okay, and this was a major airline.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Yes, sir. I will not comment which one for obvious
- 21:42Speaker 4: legal reasons, but.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Yeah, because they could sue you?
- 21:45Speaker 4: Mr. Henry, I won't comment on the legality. I'm just,
- 21:48Speaker 4: to protect the airline more than anything else.
- 21:51Speaker 3: Okay, so a member of the flight deck crew comes
- 21:53Speaker 3: on wearing a Roman Catholic priest costume?
- 21:56Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 21:57Speaker 5: This is on Halloween?
- 21:59Speaker 4: On Halloween.
- 21:59Speaker 5: Well, sir, he most likely was joining the spirit of Halloween.
- 22:05Speaker 5: I can tell you right now that there are so
- 22:08Speaker 5: many checks and balances in the aviation system, one of
- 22:10Speaker 5: them being your own crew.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Right.
- 22:12Speaker 5: If your crew members suspect that you truly believe those things.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Sir, you're... Okay, it's better now. Your phone was cracked.
- 22:20Speaker 5: If one of the crew members truly believed that you
- 22:23Speaker 5: truly believe those things, they would have you grounded in
- 22:26Speaker 5: an instant.
- 22:26Speaker 4: Believe what, specifically?
- 22:27Speaker 5: Believe that you believe that there are gremlins and goblins
- 22:30Speaker 5: that could actually get sucked into an engine.
- 22:31Speaker 4: All right.
- 22:33Speaker 5: They would have you grounded. Your first officer would call
- 22:36Speaker 5: up the chief pilot, and he would say, Hey, this
- 22:39Speaker 5: guy's nuts. This is what he's telling me. And they
- 22:41Speaker 5: would ground you.
- 22:43Speaker 4: But you don't know that pilot, so you can't say
- 22:45Speaker 4: for sure. Sir, I can tell you... Wait a minute.
- 22:47Speaker 1: What pilot would want that guy sitting behind him as
- 22:50Speaker 1: an engineer or sitting next to him.
- 22:51Speaker 3: As a co-pilot?
- 22:52Speaker 5: None of them.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Not a one. What if he was good otherwise?
- 22:56Speaker 5: What if he was what?
- 22:57Speaker 4: What if he otherwise was okay?
- 22:59Speaker 5: Well, if he's believing that gremlins and goblins could get
- 23:03Speaker 5: sucked in the aircraft, he's not otherwise okay. We do
- 23:07Speaker 5: not allow... We have a check and balance in the
- 23:10Speaker 5: crew environment... where if there is something wrong with someone,
- 23:13Speaker 5: whether it's a physical condition or a mental condition, we
- 23:17Speaker 5: stop the flight there.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 23:19Speaker 5: It will not even go.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Well, what do you mean?
- 23:22Speaker 1: You'll find the nearest airport and land?
- 23:26Speaker 5: Absolutely. Oh, come on.
- 23:27Speaker 4: You're telling me you're flying. And a guy says, I
- 23:31Speaker 4: see a gremlin on the wing, you're going to drop
- 23:32Speaker 4: down right there?
- 23:33Speaker 5: No, no, no, I'm not saying that.
- 23:34Speaker 3: A gremlin on the wing.
- 23:35Speaker 5: I am not saying that.
- 23:35Speaker 1: I think he's saying that their safety has to be
- 23:37Speaker 1: observed at all times. And if some guy thinks they
- 23:40Speaker 1: just sucked a goblin into the engine, you've got a
- 23:42Speaker 1: problem up there.
- 23:43Speaker 5: That's right.
- 23:43Speaker 3: You want to get that guy out of there.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Well, you know, he could be saving your life.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, great.
- 23:47Speaker 5: Sir, I have several thousand hours of flight time.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And you've never heard such a thing?
- 23:52Speaker 5: And I have never in my life heard such a thing.
- 23:56Speaker 5: I am a captain on a major... airline big airplane
- 24:01Speaker 5: i'm not a private pilot i don't quite a little
- 24:03Speaker 5: puddle jumpers around for.
- 24:05Speaker 4: Me i don't have to put me down.
- 24:07Speaker 5: I'm not i'm not putting you down i am only saying.
- 24:10Speaker 4: I saw as a matter of fact phil i met
- 24:13Speaker 4: three of my flight buddies swore they saw witches and
- 24:15Speaker 4: goblins flying around the cockpit window now i will tell
- 24:17Speaker 4: you this did i tell you what you tell your
- 24:21Speaker 4: Go ahead, sir.
- 24:22Speaker 5: Tell your medical doctor, tell your FAA physician what you
- 24:26Speaker 5: just told us, and we'll see if he will give
- 24:28Speaker 5: you your medical.
- 24:29Speaker 4: I'm out on the atomic right now, Phil.
- 24:32Speaker 3: What is that?
- 24:33Speaker 4: We got a chopper ready to go up in.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Yeah, and why?
- 24:37Speaker 4: Let me tell you something. You want to make fun
- 24:38Speaker 4: of me? If I go up and we encounter something
- 24:41Speaker 4: like that....
- 24:44Speaker 3: Whatever, man. Hey, you know, the witch might get into
- 24:47Speaker 3: the rotor blades of that helicopter.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Not likely because of the angle.
- 24:51Speaker 3: All right, sir, thank you very much for your call.
- 24:54Speaker 4: All right, now, go ahead. All right, we're on the
- 24:59Speaker 4: airport now, Phil.
- 25:01Speaker 3: Where are you?
- 25:02Speaker 4: Out over Santa Monica right now.
- 25:04Speaker 3: So what?
- 25:06Speaker 4: Well, go ahead and say what you want to say.
- 25:09Speaker 4: We'll say something about Bill. Jesus.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Let me go to Los Angeles on the Phil Henry Show.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Hello.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Hello.
- 25:17Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am.
- 25:19Speaker 8: Hi, I'm... I'm a flight attendant for a major airline.
- 25:22Speaker 8: I just worked all day on Halloween. Just got in.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Roger.
- 25:27Speaker 8: And if my captain had said to me, I see
- 25:33Speaker 8: a little green man on the wing, or anything like that,
- 25:36Speaker 8: I would have said, you know what, we need to
- 25:39Speaker 8: take this down. I demand that.
- 25:41Speaker 4: And what would happen if he was right? And I'm
- 25:43Speaker 4: not saying that I think there are such things, but
- 25:45Speaker 4: what if he was right?
- 25:47Speaker 8: He may have believed he was right, but I wouldn't
- 25:49Speaker 8: want to.
- 25:50Speaker 4: Take the chance. I mean, you know, yeah, suppose he
- 25:55Speaker 4: was right.
- 25:55Speaker 8: I mean, nobody in the world has ever seen such
- 25:57Speaker 8: a thing before.
- 25:58Speaker 4: My father saw that in World War II.
- 26:01Speaker 3: Your father was hallucinating, okay? Where are you now?
- 26:04Speaker 4: I'm in the South Bay right now, Phil, and everything
- 26:06Speaker 4: looks clear.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Well, what are you looking for, man? Are you looking
- 26:10Speaker 3: for a witch?
- 26:11Speaker 4: You know something? I'm not up in a plane because
- 26:13Speaker 4: I don't want to suck it in.
- 26:14Speaker 5: Okay.
- 26:17Speaker 4: All right, thank you.
- 26:18Speaker 1: You don't want to suck what in?
- 26:20Speaker 4: You don't want to.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Suck no witch.
- 26:25Speaker 4: All right, Dr. Payne, I don't see anything out here, Phil.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Right now, we do not see anything that performs suckage.
- 26:31Speaker 4: No witch, no gremlin, goblin, or elf.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Okay, great, man. So there's no elves or goblins, huh?
- 26:39Speaker 4: No. So that bodes well for a lot of opponents
- 26:42Speaker 4: coming out of the house tonight. Paranormal activity in the middle.
- 26:47Speaker 4: Zip line four.
- 26:48Speaker 1: I don't know what he's talking about. Kill this creep.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I don't see no witch. Well, okay, all you guys
- 26:56Speaker 1: take it off tonight.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Hey, you know what? We might ask him.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Hey. Hey, Art? Yes, sir?
- 27:02Speaker 3: Do you see any fairies?
- 27:04Speaker 4: No, it's, uh, well, maybe.
- 27:06Speaker 3: Okay.
