Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome to Salesforce connections.
- 0:02I'm Alex when the retail podcast I'm here with Shirley from
- 0:06PacSun CIO incredibly privileged to be with cherlene in a lot of
- 0:11the international listeners may not know of PacSun.
- 0:15But when we get to the area where we unpack, what what has
- 0:18been going on Paxson the whole gen Z Focus.
- 0:22The whole bringing Vibrance to a new segment for a 40 year old
- 0:26company. Is that right out?
- 0:27I do this back son. Yeah.
- 0:30He sells some 40, something else, it's not a new company but
- 0:33all of the Technologies and experiences that you run.
- 0:36But before all of that, what would be really useful share
- 0:39any, we could look at, maybe you as a person.
- 0:42A lot of the times when I'm with great minds and female or lead
- 0:46us, I think I always asked if she could sort of go back in
- 0:51time to the early or younger, you, what sort of advice or what
- 0:58would you do different or what advice would you give Yourself?
- 1:00Yeah, it's a good question. First of all, thank you for
- 1:02having me and it's my pleasure to be here.
- 1:05So sharing going back to my time, my whole life, I'm always
- 1:09being technology. So it's my passion, I studied
- 1:13computer science. I my entire career is in the
- 1:17internet information technology and I've been dedicating my most
- 1:22of my career to the retail industry.
- 1:26And so one of the vice is just keep up with the water and
- 1:30Technology. I mean it's a fantastic Iraq.
- 1:34It's a faster growing that anybody can imagine so my
- 1:38devices keeping their own. Yeah.
- 1:41Did you stop from your technology Trend?
- 1:43Because obviously being see I am now having all of your different
- 1:47various parts of Technology. Was that one part that you
- 1:50started off in. I started as a developer, okay?
- 1:53Just saw as a developer developer back in the Mainframe
- 1:56stage and then I experienced all the Technology, different eras,
- 2:04write it from Mainframe to client the server, and to cloud,
- 2:08and now to Ai and GPT. So, it's being a fantastic
- 2:12journey to think I'm jumping around a bit.
- 2:15Do you think that's why you've been so effective at finding
- 2:19these Trends in technology and keeping PacSun in line with
- 2:24that, like social commerce, when I looked at the list of things
- 2:26you like genuinely Filled from a retail perspective, you're ahead
- 2:29of Of the curve. Yeah, right.
- 2:31Andrew pack, verse last year, was a great example, right?
- 2:35Because because I talk about how e-commerce and metal loss are,
- 2:39you know, that's what verse was for me.
- 2:41It's a shop. Did it all in a neat digital
- 2:44ecosystem? But is that do you feel that
- 2:46that's what's helped you? The fact that you are a
- 2:49programmer or a techie at heart? Totally.
- 2:52But first off are the success of the brand and including
- 2:57technology and our Nation is typically is really a team
- 3:03effort to, so he takes the entire tax on exact leadership,
- 3:07the entire company. You know, everybody work
- 3:09together. Not only information technology
- 3:12as well. Everywhere else.
- 3:14The entire company has to embrace this.
- 3:17This culture of you knows trying to stay ahead of the curve,
- 3:22right, to embrace Innovation but myself because I do have this
- 3:28technology background And being a developer knowing how systems
- 3:34were developed. Yeah.
- 3:35How things are put together. Yeah, I really helped me to
- 3:40really understand how each application works and it helped
- 3:44me to stay engaged with the best technology providers such as
- 3:50Salesforce. Yeah.
- 3:51So that's how I can bring the best technology.
- 3:54The cutting-edge technology to apply to business and to support
- 4:00Business initiatives and strategies, because as a
- 4:03information, technology in the merchants merchandising company.
- 4:08So we are not like Salesforce or under 10 companies, we are
- 4:12Merchants, right? So, our mission is to sell our
- 4:17faster collection of merchandise to the customers.
- 4:20Yeah, so knowing sort of inside out of Technology, how it works
- 4:25together. Really helps me to vet out to
- 4:28the solutions Bring the best fit and the viable solutions to
- 4:33choose support to the business growth.
- 4:35Okay, final question on you and then we'll do think if you could
- 4:40go back again in time and maybe give one piece of advice,
- 4:43obviously. Being from what I said on the
- 4:46first question you were talking about being a passionate or an
- 4:48expert in your field. So technology, know your field
- 4:51because that's going to help you later in life, what would you
- 4:55what would you like to what would you do again?
- 4:57Or are there any things that you wish We had started or not
- 5:01started anything like yeah. So my whole education was
- 5:07focused our computer science. I did learn so much about
- 5:12computer science, how Hardware software, you know, Network
- 5:17everything work together. Yeah, so if I could go back, one
- 5:20thing I could have done better. Yeah, wish I wish that if I had
- 5:25the opportunity I would try to learn other things like Like
- 5:30supply chain accounting Finance? Yeah.
- 5:34This is just, you know, expanded the knowledge base.
- 5:37Yeah. Because I learned those along
- 5:39the career along my working, so that you definitely have to
- 5:43spend a lot of time, you know, learning those while you're
- 5:47doing your technology job. So right now, like my
- 5:50daughter's, when they go to college, I really encourage
- 5:54thongs. Doesn't matter what major they
- 5:56end up choosing with what their dreams and passions are.
- 6:00But I do encourage them to learn business.
- 6:02I encourage my daughter to the even HR, you know, and business
- 6:08administration, it called me. Yeah, sustainability is
- 6:12environmentalists August, you thought?
- 6:14Yeah, I know, I'm lucky that I'm the technology base the right,
- 6:18but it doesn't mean that everybody getting into this
- 6:22technology report has to be computer science, you know.
- 6:26So you could have studied any Majors.
- 6:29I'm Known people like music become whole.
- 6:31See ya that right any history. Any major but again to stay
- 6:38interested or anything new. So I think expand you know,
- 6:42wherever you can learn especially that's wonderful.
- 6:44Thank you. I think again some to the areas
- 6:47that I'd like to focus on Innovation especially now with
- 6:51AI and how a i is everywhere. And how because I'm generally
- 6:55for there's a secret to what you your success.
- 6:58What do you feel or how? How have you created that
- 7:01culture of innovation with impacts on?
- 7:04And how does that link to the other areas of the business, you
- 7:07know, like merchandising or marketing, how have you been
- 7:09able to bring them on the journey in Innovation?
- 7:13Yeah, it's interesting actually. So I yesterday, I was, I sitting
- 7:18in the keynote and it was so fascinating.
- 7:21Seeing how Salesforce, I, you know, took such a early reaction
- 7:26that you have this generative. AI Application ready in business
- 7:32case already. So it was really, really
- 7:34exciting. Yeah but then it I my mind went
- 7:38back to when I was in post. Read my roommate actually.
- 7:42She studied artificial intelligence.
- 7:45Wow, I was like more than 20 years.
- 7:47Yeah. And at that time was she I
- 7:50remember I saw her have like a model that draw the lines and
- 7:55then try to create the artificial intelligence program.
- 7:59So Could then compared to now. Yeah, with predictive AI.
- 8:04Now, the Vesta to generative AI. It's a totally different game.
- 8:08Yeah, and then just with the recent genitive generative AIG
- 8:12PT, I think technology has a different meaning for business.
- 8:19So, for Pakistan again, it is the entire leadership.
- 8:23So we have the culture to embrace the new technology on,
- 8:29try to always Ways because our customers are gen Z.
- 8:32Yeah. Gen C.
- 8:32Customers are very technology Savvy.
- 8:35They always adopted the newest technology for us, right?
- 8:39So the sooner or later, you all where your customers are we are,
- 8:44well, would like, if it's social commerce, you are on Tick-Tock
- 8:46or exactly exact cause our customers aren't he'd call we
- 8:50quickly. Grow more than 2 million
- 8:52followers on I noticed. Yeah, right.
- 8:55So and week in a coma sales as well, right?
- 8:57Do during 2020 or something went up.
- 9:00Yeah it's unbelievable. So so we try to Dedicated devote
- 9:06a lot of our efforts toward the social media because that's
- 9:10where our customers are. Yeah.
- 9:13Right so we try to really present any.
- 9:17We started accepting the digital currency?
- 9:20Yeah. Back in 2021.
- 9:22So we were one of I think we were the first retail.
- 9:26Quite did you accept? We use a third party.
- 9:30D. OK, and then that's their party.
- 9:32Accepts more than 30, digital currency expanding the
- 9:36integration was easy. So, that's another thing that I
- 9:39try to share with everyone. Yeah.
- 9:42That it, you don't have to start from scratch.
- 9:44Yeah. We'll have to create your
- 9:46digital wallet. Yeah.
- 9:48Take the Financial Risk. Let's say, you know that, oh my
- 9:50gosh. The digital currency journey
- 9:53goes. Yeah, I hate up and down and
- 9:55your CFO won't feel comfortable if you ask an expert.
- 10:01But so, what we actually chose is that, we engaged your third
- 10:04part. Yeah.
- 10:05The parts. Our party has everything
- 10:08connected. And I didn't know until we
- 10:10started that it needs approval validation, through the
- 10:14government. So they have done everything.
- 10:17So for me, it's a quick connection and in a mood
- 10:20immediately so that we don't take any risks, we don't have to
- 10:24prepare like for six months. So those kind of things really
- 10:29Really really Empower us to get to this connection with the
- 10:35customer. So we want to show our customers
- 10:37that we know wherever we see their desired, increasing desire
- 10:42of approaching to digital currency.
- 10:44And here we are. We offer you.
- 10:46We truly listened to love and then we offered, is outside 1/4
- 10:50or sometimes, like, I mean, the whole sales force being customer
- 10:53obsessed, right? It feels like I have to say
- 10:56this. You're one of the few technology
- 10:58people that it's customer up. S and being able to bring that
- 11:01to Market. Yes.
- 11:03And I think that's the main like, especially with AI.
- 11:05How did you bring a? I mean, a lot of people say ml
- 11:07or predictive and they try and dress that up as AI, but just
- 11:12focusing in on your customers, your gen Z customers.
- 11:15How are you serving them? How are you, what's the data
- 11:18points that using how, how do you know what they want?
- 11:21Yeah, that's a good question. So I think the recent years so
- 11:25Salesforce have this data Cloud. So we also put together Er, a
- 11:30customer data Cloud that you Aggregate and orchestrate, all
- 11:35the customer Centric data. So there you really understand
- 11:40your customers better, their behavior, their shopping
- 11:43Behavior, their reaction, and all the marketing Outreach
- 11:48etcetera. So you can truly tailor your
- 11:53messages that when you try to engage with your customers.
- 11:56So all those kind of analytics, Rai Powered.
- 12:00So it has the predictive capability, but, you know, now
- 12:05we have just leapfrogged it to the next level of AI, which is
- 12:10generated, right. So the generative AI helps you
- 12:14to engage with the customers. And so I was really excited that
- 12:20while I was looking for AI Solutions, such as to automate,
- 12:25the item description attribution based on the the the The
- 12:30merchandise photo because we design and we have things on
- 12:34your website we cannot yet. Okay.
- 12:36I'm waiting for our cell phones. Yeah I was causing some startup
- 12:41companies who specialize in that area.
- 12:44Yeah. So you have the merchandise
- 12:46photos on the model, you know, on the display and then the AI
- 12:51can also determine based on material the style and generate
- 12:56the description and attribution. So I was talking to The one,
- 13:00just a month ago. Yeah.
- 13:02But all of a sudden today and I was looking for.
- 13:05Okay so somebody started that that AI initiative got and I was
- 13:09wondering what about generated now.
- 13:12It's a totally different game. What are you doing?
- 13:15So today huge surprise it that to Keynote was tailored to
- 13:19answer my questions. Yeah here you go.
- 13:22So sales words are already put that in place so that we saw
- 13:25that 8U the AI generated and Yuri.
- 13:29Review and approve it. Yeah.
- 13:31That the the important piece is that
