- 0:09created by this legendary producer for CBS
- 0:12between 1974 and 1982.
- 0:15Brown re-imagined radio drama for contemporary times.
- 0:19Our new series offers some of these exciting works again.
- 0:22Before the play, Commentator John Slaveney
- 0:25shares details about the cast, the writer, and the plot.
- 0:29Your job -- listen.
- 0:31"If You Please" is produced in loving memory
- 0:34of Robert Isaacson.
- 0:40>>Hello, everyone, I'm John Slaveney,
- 0:42back with another Himan Brown classic,
- 0:44the sixth in our series.
- 0:45Here we have a gothic tale set in antebellum Maryland,
- 0:48a story involving mothers and sons,
- 0:50murder, plotting fiance, and long-hidden family secrets.
- 0:54We should mention that this play
- 0:55contains the words slave and master,
- 0:58reflecting the period in which it is set.
- 1:00In this episode were guests at the old Westerly Estate,
- 1:03where we meet Buford Montgomery, a man long under the thumb
- 1:07of his controlling mother, Sarah.
- 1:09When she suffers a seizure and is mistakenly declared dead,
- 1:12Buford exploits the opportunity
- 1:14and locks her away in a hidden room beneath the house,
- 1:17lowering a weighted coffin into her grave, instead.
- 1:19Though now free, Buford quickly becomes
- 1:21entangled with another woman he can't seem to manage,
- 1:24the scheming Nancy Lee,
- 1:26daughter of the supposedly aristocratic family
- 1:29in the adjoining estate.
- 1:30Featured as Nancy is Ruby Dee,
- 1:32perhaps best remembered for the 1958 Broadway production
- 1:35of "A Raisin in the Sun,"
- 1:37in which she starred alongside Sidney Poitier.
- 1:39Beyond that landmark role,
- 1:41Miss Dee amassed a jaw-dropping range of credits
- 1:43on stage and in film, television, and radio,
- 1:47in a career that spanned more than 70 years.
- 1:49Shortly before this episode was recorded,
- 1:52she won a Drama Desk Award for her performance
- 1:54in "Wedding Band" at the New York Shakespeare Festival.
- 1:57John Baragrey is on board as the second starring actor,
- 2:01here playing Buford, a man tormented by his mother,
- 2:04tricked by his lover, and nearing the end of his rope.
- 2:07Baragrey was a familiar fixture of early TV's
- 2:10many live anthology series,
- 2:12appearing in prestige productions including
- 2:14Kraft Theatre, Studio One, and Playhouse 90.
- 2:17In the choice role of Buford's overbearing mother
- 2:20is Bryna Raeburn.
- 2:21Raeburn was one of Himan Brown's reliable utility infielders,
- 2:25capable of playing most any role with wit and intelligence.
- 2:28In the weeks that follow,
- 2:29we'll hear more about some of the actors
- 2:31who made up the troupe of Brown's trusted regulars
- 2:33like Bob Dryden, Earl Hammond, and Evie Juster.
- 2:36Rounding out the cast of "Cold Storage"
- 2:38are Roxie Roker and Todd Davis.
- 2:40Roker, playing the family housekeeper, Hannah,
- 2:42would soon have a regular role on the CBS sitcom,
- 2:45"The Jeffersons," as Helen Willis,
- 2:48one half of TV's first married interracial couple.
- 2:51In real life, Roker was also the mother of musician Lenny Kravitz
- 2:54and grandmother of his daughter,
- 2:56actress, singer, and filmmaker Zoe Kravitz.
- 3:00Todd Davis appears as Hannah's son, William,
- 3:02a young man who is described, and again, with language
- 3:05more commonly used at the time of writing,
- 3:07as having the mind of a child.
- 3:09Nevertheless, it's William's actions that prove decisive
- 3:12before the radio curtain falls on this drama.
- 3:15Glaswegian creative dynamo Ian Martin
- 3:17contributed the script.
- 3:19Before his death in July of 1981,
- 3:21during the run of Radio Mystery Theater,
- 3:24Martin would write more than 240 episodes for the show
- 3:27and lend his voice to 200 more as a performer.
- 3:30Listen for more on Mr. Martin's busy career
- 3:32later in this series.
- 3:34This program was recorded on Tuesday, November 27th, 1973,
- 3:39and first aired on January 13th, 1974.
- 3:42Enjoy.
- 3:47>>The CBS Radio Mystery Theater presents...
- 3:51[ Door opens, creaks ]
- 4:00♪♪
- 4:08Come in.
- 4:11Welcome.
- 4:12I'm E.G. Marshall.
- 4:14Welcome to the terrifying world of the imagination.
- 4:19I am a man normally filled with the milk of human kindness,
- 4:23but prepared, I'm afraid, to curdle your blood
- 4:27with a tale not of life and death,
- 4:30but rather death and life.
- 4:32I offer you one small comfort --
- 4:35it could hardly happen today.
- 4:38But in the last century,
- 4:41on the old Montgomery estate in Maryland,
- 4:43in the great dark, rambling house called Westerly,
- 4:47it was easier to be marked for death than in this one.
- 4:53>>Yes, mother.
- 4:56You look at home in your coffin.
- 4:59Sleep fast.
- 5:02It's taken many years.
- 5:05But you've made your son a very happy man.
- 5:09It's all mine, at last.
- 5:12Westerly.
- 5:14The money, the jewels.
- 5:17I'm my own man.
- 5:20How I've hated you, the way you kept me on a leash
- 5:24like some old hound dog.
- 5:27Well, now, the money's mine.
- 5:31And you'll hardly need those rings
- 5:33I've let you wear to your grave.
- 5:36I'll take them so I can buy me...
- 5:39You'd hang on to them even if -- >>[ Moaning ]
- 5:43>>Ah!
- 5:44You're alive!
- 5:46You're not dead.
- 5:47>>Help me up.
- 5:49>>I should have known you'd come back to haunt me,
- 5:52even before we got you to the grave.
- 5:54♪♪
- 6:01>>Our mystery drama, "Cold Storage,"
- 6:03was written especially for the Mystery Theater by Ian Martin,
- 6:07and stars Ruby Dee and John Baragrey.
- 6:11I'll be back shortly with act one.
- 6:14♪♪
- 6:21♪♪
- 6:28Some ghouls robbing a grave,
- 6:31many years before Buford Montgomery
- 6:34found himself engaged in essentially the same activity,
- 6:37were every bit as shocked
- 6:39when the corpse whose rings they were tearing off
- 6:41suddenly sat up, alive.
- 6:45An epileptic seizure, in other times, could counterfeit death.
- 6:49The ghouls, of course, had a recourse.
- 6:52They ran away.
- 6:54Buford Montgomery has to stay and face his problem.
- 6:58[ Door opens ]
- 7:00>>Buford, will you put me down?!
- 7:02>>When I'm ready.
- 7:03>>I am quite able to walk.
- 7:06>>I want to make sure you don't run.
- 7:08>>What are you talking about?
- 7:10[ Door closes, locks ]
- 7:12[ Gasps ] What are you doing? Locking me in?
- 7:15No, no, no! Keep away from me!
- 7:17>>It's alright, Mother.
- 7:19I'm not going to harm you.
- 7:21>>I heard you standing over me in that coffin.
- 7:25I want Doc...
- 7:26I need Doctor Wayne.
- 7:28>>That doddering old numbskull.
- 7:30He almost had you buried alive.
- 7:33You know, he signed your death certificate.
- 7:35>>But how could he?
- 7:37I am alive! >>Oh, yes.
- 7:40I'm quite satisfied you are no ghost.
- 7:42>>But...wha...
- 7:44What happened?
- 7:45>>Another of your epileptic seizures.
- 7:48We were all convinced this one was fatal...
- 7:51at last.
- 7:52>>Only it wasn't.
- 7:55Quite a disappointment to my beloved son.
- 8:00Well, at least I know now where we stand.
- 8:05Now, you open that door and send Hannah up to me!
- 8:08>>Not yet, Mother.
- 8:10>>Why?
- 8:12>>Because, you see,
- 8:13we don't really know just quite how we stand, do we?
- 8:17>>Buford, don't. Don't you look at me like that.
- 8:22>>How was I looking, Mama dear?
- 8:25>>You want me dead, back in that coffin!
- 8:28>>I want all the things I thought were finally mine.
- 8:32The house, the estate, the money,
- 8:35and most, oh, most of all, the freedom to be a man.
- 8:40Look at me, Mama.
- 8:42Listen to me call you that, "Mama."
- 8:45A grown man, 38 years old,
- 8:47tied to his mother's apron strings like...
- 8:49like some sniveling little boy.
- 8:53>>I never meant to keep you tied down.
- 8:55>>Oh, yes, you did.
- 8:57You even did it with the judge.
- 8:59Father's life wasn't his own, either.
- 9:01You killed him.
- 9:04>>You are mad. Keep away!
- 9:06Keep away! You want to kill me!
- 9:08>>I'm not going to kill you, Mama.
- 9:10You know I haven't got the strength of will for that.
- 9:13>>[ Scoffs ]
- 9:14Of course, you won't, son.
- 9:16But you can have anything you want
- 9:18now we've had this little talk.
- 9:20Now, now, please get Hannah like a good boy.
- 9:22>>Oh, no, Mama.
- 9:23I don't need you anymore.
- 9:26You left me everything in your will.
- 9:29>>But I'm not dead!
- 9:30>>To all the world except me, you are.
- 9:34And you're going to stay that way.
- 9:36>>If you come one step closer, I'll scream.
- 9:39>>No one will hear you.
- 9:40Not in this big, old house.
- 9:43Westerly's thick walls have no ears.
- 9:47>>What are you going to do to me?
- 9:49>>You'll see, Mother.
- 9:51[ Footsteps ]
- 9:52You'll see. [ Door opens ]
- 9:54>>[ Gasps ] You...
- 9:57You're going to...
- 9:59put me back in that coffin and...
- 10:01and...bury me alive?!
- 10:05>>Yes. >>[ Breathing heavily ]
- 10:07>>I haven't any choice now.
- 10:09>>[ Sobbing ] Please, please, please!
- 10:10>>Don't worry.
- 10:12You'll be quite comfortable.
- 10:14I'm going to bury you alive...
- 10:17but not in the coffin.
- 10:19♪♪
- 10:26[ Footsteps ]
- 10:28Hannah! >>Yes, Master Buford?
- 10:31>>I want you here, in the hall.
- 10:33>>What is it, sir?
- 10:34>>Where's William?
- 10:36>>He's in the stable, Master,
- 10:37grooming the horses for the funeral tomorrow.
- 10:40You want I should fetch him? >>Uh...
- 10:42No...not yet. Sit down.
- 10:46I want to talk to you.
- 10:48>>Yes, sir?
- 10:49>>Now, where to begin?
- 10:52Hannah, you were mighty beholden to my father, weren't you?
- 10:56>>Judge Montgomery was a fine man.
- 10:58>>Was very kind to you and your son.
- 11:01>>The judge was powerful good to me and William.
- 11:03>>And my mother?
- 11:06>>Mrs. Montgomery is a fine lady.
- 11:08It's been a privilege to have served her as housekeeper.
- 11:11>>And will you consider it a privilege
- 11:13to serve me in the same capacity?
- 11:15>>If you want me, sir.
- 11:17>>And William?
- 11:19>>Where I go, William goes.
- 11:22You know, he's just a great, big, overgrown baby.
- 11:26Has to be cared for like one.
- 11:28>>Or they'd shut him away somewheres, hmm?
- 11:32>>I wouldn't ever let them do that to my boy.
- 11:34He couldn't stand being shut in, he'd...
- 11:37Why, he'd...
- 11:39You wouldn't let them do that to him,
- 11:40would you, Master Buford?
- 11:42>>Not if I can count on you to help me.
- 11:45>>You can, sir. You can.
- 11:48>>Well...what about William?
- 11:50>>He does what I tell him.
- 11:53He's old as you are, but he has the mind of a child.
- 11:57>>I'd want to be absolutely sure of both of you.
- 12:01>>I don't understand you, Master Buford.
- 12:03>>Then, I'll make myself plainer.
- 12:06I think you must have always hated my mother.
- 12:10Why did you stay on after Father died?
- 12:13>>I stayed because I...
- 12:16Where else could I go?
- 12:17>>You're sure it wasn't because you were afraid?
- 12:20>>Afraid of what?
- 12:22>>Not "of," Hannah.
- 12:24For. >>[ Gasps ]
- 12:27>>For William.
- 12:28Right?
- 12:30Oh, don't look so terrified and trapped.
- 12:34I know it all, Hannah, I know it all.
- 12:36>>Master Buford, I...
- 12:38>>How you must really hate us all.
- 12:40Even Father, at the end.
- 12:42>>Not the judge. Never the judge!
- 12:45>>Even after what he made you sign?
- 12:48>>What would the judge ever have wanted me to sign?
- 12:50>>A confession that you saw your son, William,
- 12:53commit a murder 10 years ago.
- 12:55>>[ Gasps ]
- 12:58How did you know?
- 13:00>>It's one of the advantages
- 13:01of my dear mother's unexpected death.
- 13:04It was among the papers the lawyer turned over to me.
- 13:07>>So, she did know.
- 13:10All these years.
- 13:12[ Chuckles dryly ]
- 13:14How could Randolph have done that to me?
- 13:16>>You know why.
- 13:18You were an eyewitness.
- 13:20And you know that William wasn't alone.
- 13:22>>It was an accident. And you were only boys.
- 13:25>>Pretty old for boys, Hannah.
- 13:28We were both going on 19, and the Copley kid was only 15.
- 13:33It was only my father being a judge that saved us all.
- 13:37Any jury in horse country like this could have told
- 13:39that boy's neck wasn't broken by any fall from a horse.
- 13:43The finger marks were gouged into the flesh.
- 13:46The rope burns were raw on his wrists.
- 13:48>>Why did you do it, Master Buford?
- 13:50>>Not I, Hannah.
- 13:52Remember?
- 13:53William was the culprit.
- 13:55>>William didn't know what he was doing.
- 13:57You egged him on! >>If I did...
- 13:59I didn't mean it to go so far.
- 14:02William didn't...
- 14:03doesn't know his own strength.
- 14:06>>What does it matter?
- 14:08It's nearly 20 years ago.
- 14:11Why do you rake up old ashes?
- 14:13>>There are certain things I have to be sure of.
- 14:17>>What?
- 14:18>>In spite of everything,
- 14:20your complete loyalty to me.
- 14:24>>I have little choice. If you have any confession...
- 14:27>>I have it.
- 14:28In your own handwriting.
- 14:30And William's scrawl, too.
- 14:33I'm going to ask you to stretch your conscience further.
- 14:36Come with me! >>No. No, Master Buford!
- 14:39Don't bring me to the coffin! I don't want to look at her!
- 14:41>>Stop babbling, woman! >>I don't want to!
- 14:42>>Stop babbling. Here, look.
- 14:45Open your eyes.
- 14:46>>Oh!
- 14:49It's empty.
- 14:51She's gone.
- 14:53What have you done with her?
- 14:55>>She's in her bedroom upstairs.
- 14:58>>But she... >>[ Laughs sinisterly ]
- 15:00>>I...
- 15:02>>I'm afraid that blind, old boggler,
- 15:04Doctor Wayne, slightly exaggerated
- 15:06my mother's untimely end.
- 15:09>>You mean, she's alive?
- 15:11>>And unfortunately, quite well.
- 15:14[ Laughs ]
- 15:16I see the news is as disappointing to you
- 15:19as it was to me.
- 15:20Oh, don't try to hide it, Hannah.
- 15:22You know you hated her quite as much as I.
- 15:25>>I won't deny it.
- 15:27The humiliation,
- 15:28the day by day degradations your mother has put me through
- 15:32all these years since your father died...
- 15:35I can never forgive her for them.
- 15:37>>I'm glad to hear it.
- 15:40>>When she was dead...
- 15:42I was glad.
- 15:44God forgive me.
- 15:45It was one of the happiest days of my life.
- 15:48>>And mine.
- 15:50That's why she's going to stay dead, Hannah.
- 15:52>>You're mad.
- 15:54You can't murder your own mother.
- 15:55>>Nothing is further from my mind.
- 15:58No.
- 15:59Dear Mama will come to no physical harm.
- 16:02You and William will see to it
- 16:04that her bodily needs are well taken care of.
- 16:07And I, as complete master of Westerly at last,
- 16:11will see to it, in turn,
- 16:12that you and William are taken care of.
- 16:15>>What are you going to do with her?
- 16:17>>First of all, Hannah,
- 16:18you're going to explain to William.
- 16:21Then, bring him here so we can nail up this coffin
- 16:23and the burial services can be completed tomorrow.
- 16:25>>Master Buford, no, you can't...
- 16:27>>Better tell William to bring a sack of meal or corn.
- 16:29Won't do to have the coffin too light.
- 16:31>>How...
- 16:33How on Earth can you hide your mother from...
- 16:35from everyone?!
- 16:37>>[ Chuckles ] On Earth.
- 16:38That's very apt.
- 16:41I'll tell you what we're going to do with her, Hannah.
- 16:44Just what we do with the roots and the preserves.
- 16:48We're going to put Mama in cold storage.
- 16:51♪♪
- 16:56[ Hammering ]
- 17:00Make sure to drive them home, William.
- 17:02>>Do seem a shame, burying a whole good sack of good feed.
- 17:07I picked up the worthiest one I could find.
- 17:10>>That's enough now. Finish up.
- 17:14>>Finished now.
- 17:16>>Got the lantern, Hannah?
- 17:17>>Yes, sir. >>Alright.
- 17:21Did you strip the bed in the spare room, Hannah?
- 17:23>>Yes, sir, I did.
- 17:25>>William...
- 17:27you go on up there and bring that bed
- 17:29and all the furniture downstairs to the old hidey hole.
- 17:32Right? >>Sure will.
- 17:34>>Where's this... this hidey hole?
- 17:37>>William could tell you as good as me.
- 17:39Or better. He's the one who found it.
- 17:42Must be, oh, 15 years ago.
- 17:45>>16, Master Buford.
- 17:47That was the year Miss Prudence dropped her first foal.
- 17:51That's when old Mr. Todhunter, the vet man,
- 17:54told me all about his daddy and your grandfather,
- 17:57and how they dug out the hidey hole
- 17:59and made it a big room
- 18:01like a station on the Underground Railroad.
- 18:03>>William, go see to the furniture.
- 18:05>>Yes'm.
- 18:06Take me a while to get the bed apart.
- 18:09>>Take your time.
- 18:11[ Door closes ]
- 18:12>>The Underground Railroad?
- 18:14You mean this was a slave station?
- 18:17To hide out escaped slaves being passed to the north?
- 18:19>>What it was.
- 18:21>>But you can't put your mother in a place like that!
- 18:24>>Why not?
- 18:25She spent her lifetime trying to turn the clock back,
- 18:28make a slave of everyone else.
- 18:31Why shouldn't it be her turn...
- 18:34for a change?
- 18:35♪♪
- 18:39>>How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is
- 18:43to have a thankless child,
- 18:45as King Lear had occasion to remark.
- 18:48Still, on the record, Mama is not much of a prize, either.
- 18:54Let's leave her in cold storage
- 18:56until we return shortly with act two.
- 19:01>>Like what you're hearing so far?
- 19:03Are you curious about the history
- 19:04behind radio programs just like this one,
- 19:07and the dramatic genius who created them?
- 19:09In the nine-part award-winning documentary,
- 19:12"Audio Maverick,"
- 19:13we explore the golden age of radio
- 19:16through the life of Himan Brown.
- 19:18You'll hear the history of radio come to life
- 19:20as we travel from the birth of audio drama
- 19:23to the programs that brought millions of families
- 19:25into their living rooms every night.
- 19:27"Audio Maverick" is available anywhere you get your podcasts.
- 19:34♪♪
- 19:39♪♪
- 19:44>>In the weeks that pass,
- 19:46Mrs. Randolph Price Montgomery is finding her quarters
- 19:50somewhat less elegant than she liked,
- 19:52but at least, they are less confining than a coffin.
- 19:56Buford, her son and now heir,
- 19:58has been living as high as he promised himself,
- 20:02and cutting a swath
- 20:03as the county's most sought-after bachelor.
- 20:05[ Crickets chirping ]
- 20:10>>I declare, Buford,
- 20:13I thought I'd never be able to coax you
- 20:15away from all the other ladies.
- 20:16>>Nancy Lee,
- 20:18they may have had my arms, but my heart was with you.
- 20:21>>Well, I'd have felt a lot surer of that
- 20:23if I'd had your name a little more often in my car.
- 20:26>>I just don't want us to get talked about too much.
- 20:28>>Why ever not?
- 20:30Would you be ashamed to have your name linked with mine?
- 20:34>>Why, Nancy Lee, you know better than that.
- 20:38>>Aren't you gon' sit with me, sugar?
- 20:39>>Oh, why, sure, honey.
- 20:41>>Hold my hand.
- 20:44>>Just lies in mine like a little bird.
- 20:47>>Now, that's more like my Buford.
- 20:51Kiss me.
- 20:53>>Angel.
- 20:55>>Still the same old thrill.
- 20:58>>Gives me goosebumps all over.
- 21:00>>Oh, that's nice.
- 21:03I wouldn't want to think I'd lost the power to get you going.
- 21:07>>Why would you think that?
- 21:09>>Well, I'll tell you, Buford.
- 21:11I thought when your mother died,
- 21:13it would give us a chance to be closer than ever.
- 21:16I mean, since we could come right out and open.
- 21:19I didn't think it would start you
- 21:21chasing after every pretty girl in sight.
- 21:23>>I wouldn't take a one of them or exchange any of them for you.
- 21:27>>Now, I'm right glad to hear you say that, sugar,
- 21:30because I'm afraid...
- 21:33you're not going to be a bachelor anymore.
- 21:36>>Huh? >>[ Giggles ]
- 21:39I got something to tell you.
- 21:42You're going to have to go back to being a family man again,
- 21:45I'm afraid.
- 21:46>>What?
- 21:48W-what are you saying?
- 21:50>>That...
- 21:51That you're going to be a daddy.
- 21:53Aren't you proud?
- 21:55>>Good lord! [ Stammers ] Are you sure?
- 21:58>>>[ Laughs ] That I'm in a family way?
- 22:00Well, it's very easy for a girl to be sure of that.
- 22:03>>Well... [stammers] what are we going to do?
- 22:06>>Well, with Mama gone, there's no problem at all.
- 22:09You're just going to have to make an honest woman of me.
- 22:12My parents surely won't object.
- 22:14[ Laughing ] And you wouldn't want the Colonel
- 22:16to come after you with a gun
- 22:18knowing that my daddy is the best shot in South Carolina!
- 22:20>>Now, wait a minute, Nancy Lee!
- 22:22>>Oh, sugar, you know I'm only funnin'.
- 22:24And I know you're going to be every bit as happy as I am
- 22:26once you get used to it.
- 22:29Oh, honey, aren't you just thrilled to death?
- 22:33We're going to get married!
- 22:35♪♪
- 22:42[ Knock on door ]
- 22:44>>Come in. [ Door opens ]
- 22:46>>Excuse me, Master Buford. [ Door closes ]
- 22:48>>What is it, Hannah?
- 22:49>>It's about Mrs. Montgomery.
- 22:52>>She isn't that yet.
- 22:54>>I meant your mother, sir.
- 22:55>>Oh. Well, what about her?
- 22:58>>She keeps asking for you.
- 22:59>>Well, tell her I'm --
- 23:02Just don't tell her anything.
- 23:04You haven't said anything about the wedding tomorrow?
- 23:06>>No, sir, but...
- 23:07>>But what?
- 23:09About your mother, she...
- 23:12she wants to talk to you.
- 23:14And it does seem so inhumane to keep her locked up alone.
- 23:17>>She sees you or William every day, doesn't she?
- 23:19>>Yes.
- 23:20>>Her quarters are comfortable and clean, aren't they?
- 23:22>>Yes.
- 23:23>>She's in perfectly good health.
- 23:24>>Oh, yes. Never better.
- 23:26>>More's the pity.
- 23:27Well, then?
- 23:28>>She's...
- 23:30She's lonely.
- 23:32>>So was I all those years she had me under her thumb.
- 23:34And I'm not going back to that.
- 23:37By tomorrow, I'm going to have my own woman --
- 23:39and a beauty at that.
- 23:41Mother's not going to spoil that for me.
- 23:43>>Yes, sir.
- 23:45I'm sorry, sir. >>Good.
- 23:47Now, get out of here
- 23:48and take the whiskey carafe with you and fill it up.
- 23:51It's almost empty again. [ Glasses clink ]
- 23:52>>Yes, sir, Master Buford, sir.
- 23:55[ Footsteps depart, door opens ]
- 23:59[ Door closes ] William.
- 24:00>>Yes, Mama?
- 24:02>>Take this carafe and fill it with Master Buford's bourbon
- 24:05and bring it back to him in his study.
- 24:07>>Yes'm. [ Chuckles ]
- 24:09I reckon old Master Buford's getting himself liquored up
- 24:12for the bachelor party.
- 24:14>>[ Sniffles, chuckles ]
- 24:15I reckon he's trying to build himself some...
- 24:18Dutch courage.
- 24:20>>What do you mean, Ma?
- 24:22>>I mean...
- 24:23I don't think he exactly figured on getting tied up again
- 24:27when he cut his mama's apron strings.
- 24:29♪♪
- 24:35[ Rain pattering ]
- 24:39>>Buford. >>Mm?
- 24:42>>Oh, look at that. It's started into rain.
- 24:44Such a pretty night, too.
- 24:46>>Mm.
- 24:48Let's go on up to bed, mm?
- 24:50>>My husband.
- 24:52All he ever seems to think of,
- 24:54now he's made me his little goods and chattel.
- 24:56>>Nancy Lee, all I mean was I'm tired.
- 25:00>>Tired of me after two short weeks?
- 25:02>>You know I didn't mean that.
- 25:04>>Well, come here, then. Lay your head on Mama's breast.
- 25:06>>Don't say that.
- 25:08>>What happened? Don't be so sensitive.
- 25:09Your Mama's dead and gone.
- 25:11>>Yes.
- 25:13>>Although, sometimes, I swear to goodness,
- 25:15I get the feeling in this rickety old house
- 25:17she's still sort of...around.
- 25:20>>Huh? What makes you think that?
- 25:23>>Well, don't jump so, darling, it's just a...
- 25:26just a spooky feeling.
- 25:29Maybe you and me should have gotten rid of Westerly
- 25:31and gone back on to South Carolina
- 25:33with Mom and Papa.
- 25:34>>No!
- 25:35We can't leave here.
- 25:37>>Well, alright, sugar, don't take on so.
- 25:39>>[ Stammers ] I didn't mean to jump at you.
- 25:41>>Oh, of course you didn't.
- 25:42You're just so kind to little old me,
- 25:44and you were so generous to lend the Colonel all that money
- 25:47to go back South with Mama
- 25:48to build up our lovely old plantation again.
- 25:51>>It must be the size of half the state,
- 25:53what it's costing to restore it.
- 25:55>>Well, it had gotten run down, sort of, but...
- 25:57you've nothing to worry about, Buford.
- 25:59You'll get the money back.
- 26:01>>Of course, of course, Nancy Lee.
- 26:02>>[ Gasps ] >>What is it?
- 26:03>>Oh, this old porch.
- 26:05It's starting to leak like a sieve.
- 26:07>>I'll have William look at it in the morning.
- 26:09>>That big old lame-brain?
- 26:10Buford, if we're going to stay here at Westerly,
- 26:12I want some changes made.
- 26:14I'd like to do some rebuilding --
- 26:15>>We can discuss that in the morning.
- 26:17>>And I want some new servants.
- 26:19I don't want that silly old William and Hannah around.
- 26:21They've got to go. >>No!
- 26:22>>But Buford --
- 26:24>>Whatever happens, William and Hannah stay!
- 26:26And we stay.
- 26:27That's final.
- 26:29>>My Buford, you are so masterful when you get mad,
- 26:32I could just swoon.
- 26:34Come on, let's go on up to bed
- 26:37and I'll show you just how wonderful it is to be married.
- 26:41♪♪
- 26:46>>I came out with your mother's tray, Master Buford,
- 26:48and she nearly caught me.
- 26:50>>What the Sam Hill was Nancy Lee doing in the cellar?
- 26:52>>I don't know.
- 26:54>>She didn't see anything?
- 26:55>>I'm sure not.
- 26:57>>Does she suspect anything? >>I don't think I--
- 26:58>>Damn that woman.
- 27:00[ Footsteps approach ]
- 27:02>>That's her now.
- 27:03>>Get out, Hannah. I'll handle this.
- 27:04>>Yes, sir.
- 27:06[ Footsteps depart ]
- 27:07[ Door opens ] >>Nancy Lee.
- 27:10What the devil were you doing down in the cellar?
- 27:12>>No need to take on so. I was...
- 27:14I was just making up my mind where to put the wine cellar.
- 27:18>>What wine cellar?
- 27:20>>The one we're going to build in the back there.
- 27:22>>What for?
- 27:23>>Well, I intend to start entertaining
- 27:25having guests to stay.
- 27:26Well, bring this house alive! >>No.
- 27:28No wine cellar and no guests.
- 27:30And you stay out of that downstairs.
- 27:32>>Don't you order me around.
- 27:33I'll do what I want in my own house.
- 27:35♪♪
- 27:39>>What did you mean by locking me
- 27:40out of our bedroom last night?
- 27:42>>I don't allow anyone who can't behave
- 27:43like a gentleman in my room.
- 27:45>>If you think just by withholding your favors from me,
- 27:47you can get your own way... >>You listen to me, Buford.
- 27:50One way or another, I always get my own way.
- 27:53And don't you forget it.
- 27:54♪♪
- 27:59>>Master Buford, Master Buford,
- 28:01you can't sleep here on the floor, sir.
- 28:02>>Wha...
- 28:04[ Mumbling ] Oh. Yes...
- 28:05Got to, Hannah.
- 28:07My own wife won't let me in the bedroom.
- 28:11>>Come on, sir, you've been drinking.
- 28:13I've made you up a bed in one of the guest rooms.
- 28:16>>[ Mumbling ] Wanna sleep own bedroom...
- 28:18not guest room.
- 28:19[ Chuckles ]
- 28:21Ironic, isn't it, Hannah?
- 28:24Don't have much luck with the ladies, huh?
- 28:29Out of the frying pan, into the fire!
- 28:33She-- she's got to go.
- 28:35Except can't...
- 28:37because of baby...
- 28:38Got the child to think of.
- 28:40Can't figure that one out.
- 28:42♪♪
- 28:48>>William, is my horse ready?
- 28:50>>Morning, Nancy Lee.
- 28:53My, ain't you the prettiest thing?
- 28:55>>I asked about my horse.
- 28:57>>Oh, yes, Miss Nancy.
- 28:59I combed and curried and shined that old horse.
- 29:02>>Would you bring him around to the front?
- 29:03>>Yes'm, Miss Nancy.
- 29:05>>And the name is Mrs. Montgomery.
- 29:08>>Yes...Mrs. Montgomery.
- 29:11>>Oh, get out of my sight.
- 29:13When you bring him around, let me know.
- 29:14I'll be in the parlor.
- 29:15[ Footsteps depart, door opens ]
- 29:18Buford! >>Here.
- 29:20>>Hannah said you want to see me.
- 29:22>>I want to talk to you.
- 29:23>>I'm afraid I don't have time, I'm going riding.
- 29:25>>That's what I want to talk to you about.
- 29:27Do you think it's wise? >>What?
- 29:30>>All this riding, in your condition.
- 29:32>>In my condition? [ Gasps ]
- 29:34Ohh! [ Giggles ]
- 29:37I'd near forgotten.
- 29:38>>Forgotten?
- 29:40How could you forget the baby you're carrying?
- 29:43>>I'm sure I wouldn't if I were...
- 29:45only I'm not.
- 29:47I never had one.
- 29:49>>What?!
- 29:50>>Oh, Buford, don't splutter so.
- 29:52If you'd half a brain in your head,
- 29:54you'd have realized that long ago.
- 29:56>>It...it was all a trick to get me to marry you.
- 29:59>>At the time, you seemed such a catch
- 30:02and the competition was a little heavy,
- 30:03so I thought I'd just make sure of you,
- 30:06and it worked.
- 30:08I'm really sorry
- 30:09to have disappointed you about the child,
- 30:10but -- >>[ Laughs ]
- 30:13Disappointed?
- 30:15You don't know how relieved I am!
- 30:17Now, there's no problem.
- 30:18>>What do you mean, "no problem"?
- 30:20>>To end this marriage, to get a divorce.
- 30:23>>You think that's no problem? >>It shouldn't be.
- 30:26I'm prepared to make a reasonable settlement.
- 30:28>>And just what would you consider
- 30:29reasonable, Mr. Montgomery?
- 30:31>>We can waive the money I loaned your father
- 30:33and call it a day.
- 30:35>>[ Laughs ]
- 30:36The money you loaned my father?
- 30:39That wasn't a loan!
- 30:40That was a little payoff for a nice background
- 30:43of southern gentility to trap me a man.
- 30:46The Colonel and his wife
- 30:47are just as phony as I am, dear heart,
- 30:49and they are long gone.
- 30:50I'm where I want to be, with a name I like,
- 30:53and I'm not giving it up for anyone.
- 30:55You are never going to get rid of little Nancy Lee.
- 30:58No how, no way at all.
- 31:01Now, if you'll excuse me, dear husband, I...
- 31:05Why, Hannah. Hello.
- 31:08Did you get a nice earful?
- 31:09>>The door was open, Mrs. Montgomery,
- 31:11and William asked me to come in here
- 31:13and tell you that he's waiting outside with your horse.
- 31:15>>He could have told me himself!
- 31:17>>And I hope that damn beast throws her and breaks her neck.
- 31:22Alright, Hannah, what are you waiting for?
- 31:25>>It's your mother, sir. She's in a state.
- 31:27She insists on seeing you. >>No.
- 31:30I've had enough of Montgomery women for one day.
- 31:32Tell her I...
- 31:35No. Forget that, Hannah.
- 31:38I've changed my mind.
- 31:40I think I will pay Mama a visit.
- 31:42I have a little surprise for her.
- 31:44♪♪
- 31:50>>But you can't be so cruel, Buford,
- 31:53keeping me here, locked up like a...
- 31:55like an animal, you...
- 31:57You've got to let me go.
- 31:59>>You know I can't do that, mother.
- 32:01I've explained again and again
- 32:02why you can't suddenly turn up alive.
- 32:04>>Oh, but I can't stand it anymore!
- 32:07It's like being buried alive!
- 32:09Oh! Oh, Buford, it's so...
- 32:12so lonely.
- 32:14>>I know that, Mama.
- 32:16And I know it just plain isn't fair.
- 32:19So, I've thought of a solution.
- 32:21>>Oh.
- 32:22What, dear?
- 32:24>>How would you like to have a nice permanent companion?
- 32:28♪♪
- 32:32>>Did I make an unguarded statement
- 32:34that Buford was no match for the ladies?
- 32:37Perhaps, in one sense, that's true,
- 32:40but in another...
- 32:43Well, it seems that Nancy Lee is going to have cause
- 32:46to regret her match with Buford.
- 32:49We'll find that out shortly when we return with act three.
- 32:55>>Like what you're hearing so far?
- 32:57Are you curious about the history
- 32:58behind radio programs just like this one,
- 33:01and the dramatic genius who created them?
- 33:03In the nine-part award-winning documentary,
- 33:06"Audio Maverick,"
- 33:07we explore the golden age of radio
- 33:09through the life of Himan Brown.
- 33:12You'll hear the history of radio come to life
- 33:14as we travel from the birth of audio drama
- 33:17to the programs that brought millions of families
- 33:19into their living rooms every night.
- 33:21"Audio Maverick" is available anywhere you get your podcasts.
- 33:28♪♪
- 33:33♪♪
- 33:39>>Now, it's one thing to get away
- 33:41with disposing of someone
- 33:42already legally certified as dead
- 33:45and supposedly suitably interred.
- 33:48Nancy Lee is another problem.
- 33:51She can't have a convenient epileptic seizure.
- 33:55Can Buford get away with it?
- 33:58>>Nancy Lee,
- 33:59I've been thinking about us.
- 34:01>>Don't waste your time.
- 34:03Nothing's going to change. I've got nobody but you,
- 34:05and nowheres in the whole wide world to go.
- 34:07I'm a permanent fixture, Buford.
- 34:09>>Oh, I know that, honey.
- 34:11And I was wrong to think anything else.
- 34:13Don't you know I really want you here, with all my heart?
- 34:17>>On my terms.
- 34:18Don't you try to fancy talk me.
- 34:20>>Won't you... please let me tell you
- 34:22what I was thinking about?
- 34:24>>If you make it short. >>And sweet.
- 34:27What I was going to suggest, just to clear the air, sort of,
- 34:31and give us both a chance to get a new perspective...
- 34:33was a trip.
- 34:35>>I don't want to go anywheres with you.
- 34:37>>Oh, I-I didn't mean together.
- 34:39I meant just you alone, sugar.
- 34:41Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia.
- 34:45You could buy yourself a whole new wardrobe.
- 34:47Like -- like it was the trousseau you never really had.
- 34:50>>Oh, Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia.
- 34:53>>Even Paris, France, if you want.
- 34:55>>Paris, France! Oh, Buford! Do you mean it?
- 34:58>>Anything's worth trying just to work things out for us.
- 35:02And to prove I mean it,
- 35:03you just go tell all your friends and everyone around
- 35:05that you're on your way. >>Ohh!
- 35:07Won't I make them squirm with envy!
- 35:10Washington, Philadelphia, Paris, France!
- 35:13>>Then, you'll go?
- 35:14>>What woman would pass up the chance?
- 35:16Well, I'll ride everywhere this week and let everyone know.
- 35:18Just one thing, Buford, you ought to understand.
- 35:21>>Well, what's that, sugar? >>This doesn't change anything.
- 35:23I'm still going to spend the rest of my life
- 35:25right here in this house.
- 35:27>>Oh, I know that, Nancy Lee.
- 35:29I know that for sure.
- 35:32♪♪
- 35:39>>Master Buford, you just can't get away with it.
- 35:41>>Now, you hush up, Hannah. I'm going to.
- 35:44>>But what will other people say?
- 35:45>>There's nothing for them to say.
- 35:47Nancy Lee went off on a little trip and she never came back.
- 35:50>>Master Buford, you're flying in the face of God.
- 35:53>>Hannah, to the devil with it.
- 35:55Now, you do as I say, hear?
- 35:57>>Yes, sir.
- 35:58>>Now, you and William have already got
- 35:59the extra bed set up downstairs,
- 36:02and the chest of drawers, and so on?
- 36:04>>Yes, sir. >>Fine.
- 36:06Then, get busy
- 36:07and take all Ms. Montgomery's clothes downstairs.
- 36:09Shouldn't take you too long.
- 36:11Most of her wardrobe is already packed.
- 36:14>>What am I going to tell your mother?
- 36:16Ever since we moved the extra furniture in,
- 36:17she's been like to drive me out of my mind asking questions.
- 36:21>>You haven't told her who to expect?
- 36:22>>You said not to. >>That's quite right, Hannah.
- 36:25We have to preserve the proprieties.
- 36:27I think it's my place to introduce my mother to my bride.
- 36:31♪♪
- 36:36>>Oh, Ms. Montgomery? >>What is it, Hannah?
- 36:39>>Master Buford asked me to have you go right downstairs
- 36:41as soon as you got back from riding.
- 36:42>>But I want a bath and change.
- 36:44>>He said right away, the moment you got here.
- 36:46>>Why?
- 36:48>>He said he had a little...surprise for you.
- 36:50>>Oh, very well.
- 36:52[ Footsteps, door opens ]
- 36:54Buford? >>Nancy Lee?
- 36:55>>Yes. What do you want me for?
- 36:57>>Come on down. I'll show you.
- 36:59>>Oh, for goodness sake!
- 37:01Hold that lantern a little higher, I can't see.
- 37:04>>How's that? >>Better.
- 37:07>>Right over here by the back wall.
- 37:09>>Hannah said you had a surprise.
- 37:11Why, Buford!
- 37:13You're going to do it.
- 37:16>>Do what?
- 37:17>>Put in my wine cellar while I'm gone!
- 37:21>>Something like that.
- 37:22>>Of course, we'll have to build regular bins
- 37:25instead of these old, rickety shelves.
- 37:27You know what I thought
- 37:28when I was looking about down here before?
- 37:29>>Oh, what was that?
- 37:31>>If we tore down these shelves...
- 37:33Well, what I mean is,
- 37:35I was sort of stepping off the house upstairs,
- 37:37and it's some longer than this cellar.
- 37:40>>Is it? >>Yes.
- 37:41I walked off the cellar, too.
- 37:43You suppose there might be any room behind there
- 37:46we could sort of scoop out to make it bigger?
- 37:49>>Now, why don't you and me just try and find out?
- 37:53>>Why don't we?
- 37:54Of course, I reckon we'll need help.
- 37:56>>Oh, I don't think so. It might be quite easy.
- 37:59Like, um...
- 38:01Like this, for example. [ Scraping ]
- 38:03>>[ Gasps ]
- 38:05It's a secret door!
- 38:09And a room!
- 38:11There's someone in there.
- 38:13>>A room you're going to be sharing for a long time.
- 38:16>>No. No.
- 38:18No, I won't go in there. >>Oh, yes, you will.
- 38:19>>I-I'll scream!
- 38:21>>You'll do as you're told.
- 38:22Ow! You bit my hand!
- 38:24>>You -- you can't -- >>Get in there!
- 38:25>>You can't keep me in here!
- 38:27I'll scratch your eyes out! I'll --
- 38:29>>Oh, no, you won't.
- 38:30You'll keep your mouth shut for once and do as you're told.
- 38:33>>Oh, no, I won't!
- 38:35You wouldn't dare shoot me.
- 38:36>>Don't tempt me.
- 38:37>>Buford, put that pistol down.
- 38:40>>[ Gasps ]
- 38:41No!
- 38:43It can't be.
- 38:46Who are you?
- 38:47>>Don't you remember the first Mrs. Montgomery?
- 38:50>>But...she...
- 38:53Your mother!
- 38:54Your mother's dead!
- 38:56>>A popular misconception.
- 38:58Let's just keep this private, shall we?
- 39:01[ Scraping ]
- 39:03>>You...
- 39:05You're really Judge Montgomery's wife?
- 39:09>>Certainly.
- 39:11Buford, what is this slut doing here?
- 39:14>>Now, Mama, that's not nice.
- 39:16>>Isn't this that Nancy Lee person
- 39:19I warned you to stay away from? >>Yes, sir.
- 39:22Maybe about the one time you were right, Mama.
- 39:24>>Well, get her out of here. I don't want her!
- 39:27And I demand you release me, too.
- 39:30>>You know I can't do that.
- 39:32The best I can do is provide you with Nancy Lee.
- 39:34>>You're not going to lock me up
- 39:36with this horrid old woman!
- 39:37>>Now, that's no way to talk to your mother in law.
- 39:41>>Her...her what?
- 39:43>>Oh, I'm sorry, Mama.
- 39:45In all the excitement, I forgot to tell you.
- 39:48Nancy Lee's my bride.
- 39:50We got married. >>Oh!
- 39:52>>That makes you both Mrs. Montgomerys.
- 39:55That's how come I thought it would work out real nice
- 39:57to have you roommates.
- 39:59Sort of...keep it all in the family.
- 40:02♪♪
- 40:08[ Door opens ]
- 40:10>>[ Panting ]
- 40:11Ma! Ma!
- 40:13>>Sakes alive, William.
- 40:15You startled me so I almost burnt my hand on the stove.
- 40:17>>Ma, what are we going to do?
- 40:20>>What is it, son?
- 40:21Here. Here, sit down.
- 40:24You're shaking all over.
- 40:25>>You know that big old stone
- 40:27you wanted down in the preserves cellar
- 40:29to make a table of?
- 40:31For making cornmeal and such? >>Yes.
- 40:34>>Well, a while ago, I took it, to bring it on down for you.
- 40:39>>You lifted that heavy stone by yourself?
- 40:41>>It's what happened when I was down there.
- 40:43>>What?
- 40:45>>Well...
- 40:46I-I didn't have no light,
- 40:49and I didn't hear Master Buford come on down there.
- 40:52But all of a sudden, I see him light a lantern,
- 40:56and as far as I can see anything,
- 40:59Mrs. Montgomery come on down there to join him.
- 41:02>>I know, I sent her down there.
- 41:05>>You?
- 41:07You knew what he was going to do to her?
- 41:09>>Son...
- 41:10You gotta understand.
- 41:11I can't help myself.
- 41:14>>You knew he was going to throw her in that...
- 41:17hidey hole with old Mrs. Montgomery?
- 41:20>>I knew.
- 41:21>>[ Crying ] But she's so pretty!
- 41:24And he hurt her, Ma!
- 41:25Master Buford hurt her.
- 41:28He took that little girl that's like a...
- 41:31like a little chickadee bird,
- 41:34and he's going to shut her up in there.
- 41:35>>Don't think about it now, son.
- 41:37>>I gotta think on it.
- 41:40I couldn't be shut up, Ma.
- 41:42I couldn't be shut up nowheres.
- 41:44>>I know that, son.
- 41:46>>I'd just take my own throat with my hands,
- 41:50like I done with...
- 41:51with someone a long time ago.
- 41:54>>Don't, William! Don't do that to yourself!
- 41:58>>No.
- 42:00Not me.
- 42:03To Master Buford.
- 42:05To Master Buford,
- 42:07unless he lets her go.
- 42:11That's who I got to. >>No, William.
- 42:13No, listen to me.
- 42:14Let me explain.
- 42:16>>Let me go, Ma. Let go!
- 42:18>>William! You've got to understand that I--
- 42:21[ Objects clatter ]
- 42:23>>Ma?
- 42:24Ma, are you alright?!
- 42:27I hope I-I didn't hurt you.
- 42:31Ma?
- 42:35No...
- 42:37You alright.
- 42:40Just...sleeping.
- 42:45I'll wake you, Ma.
- 42:49I'll wake you just as soon as I set that...
- 42:52poor little bird free.
- 42:54♪♪
- 42:58>>I spent my life trying to get free of you, Mama.
- 43:01And I did.
- 43:02Then, I got myself trapped again.
- 43:05Now, I've got to get free of Nancy Lee, too.
- 43:08Goodbye. You'll never see me again.
- 43:10>>You can't leave me here with this old woman!
- 43:13>>I can't be shut up anymore!
- 43:15>>You've been drinking again! >>You look drunk.
- 43:17>>I feel drunk!
- 43:19Drunk with relief.
- 43:21Hannah and William are all you'll ever see from now on.
- 43:23As far as I care, you can both rot.
- 43:26>>[ Gasps ] Oh!
- 43:30>>What's that funny smell?
- 43:33My head.
- 43:35I need a drink.
- 43:37[ Footsteps approach ] Who's that?
- 43:39>>It's me, Master Buford.
- 43:42I'm sorry for...
- 43:44for what I got to do.
- 43:45>>[ Exclaims, chokes ]
- 43:47>>Master Buford.
- 43:48Master Buford!
- 43:49>>[ Choking, body thuds ]
- 43:51>>I didn't mean to do nothing, Master!
- 43:53I didn't mean to do nothing.
- 43:56It was just...
- 43:59a bird has to fly free.
- 44:03You can't keep it locked up.
- 44:05[ Door opens ] >>William?
- 44:07William! Are you down there?
- 44:10>>I'm here, Ma! >>What are you doing?
- 44:12What's happened?
- 44:14Where's Master Buford?
- 44:15>>I'm glad you woke up, Ma.
- 44:18S-something's happened to Master Buford.
- 44:20>>Oh my God!
- 44:22Move aside! Let me see!
- 44:24>>I didn't mean him no harm.
- 44:27It was just Ms. Nancy.
- 44:29I didn't want to hurt him, Ma.
- 44:31>>[ Gasps ] >>Ma?
- 44:33>>He's dead.
- 44:35Oh, William.
- 44:38William, you killed him!
- 44:41>>I never even touched him, Ma.
- 44:43>>How would you know?
- 44:46Poor, twisted mind.
- 44:48How would you know?
- 44:51Heaven help me.
- 44:53What are we going to do now?
- 44:55I've got to think.
- 44:57♪♪
- 45:05[ Door opens ]
- 45:07>>Well, I'm all packed
- 45:10and William is taking my things down to the carriage now.
- 45:14What about you, mother? >>[ Chuckles ]
- 45:17I suppose you have to call me that.
- 45:21>>We might as well get used to it.
- 45:23Just as you'll have to try to sound a little fonder
- 45:26when you talk to your daughter, Nancy Lee.
- 45:29>>Very well, Nancy Lee.
- 45:32And I not only am all packed,
- 45:35but my trunks have already been taken to the railroad station.
- 45:38>>All ready for our new life.
- 45:40>>Yes. >>Oh, come on now.
- 45:42This was all worked out before the funeral.
- 45:44>>And you've had a lovely time of it, haven't you?
- 45:47Playing the bereaved widow,
- 45:49being wined and dined and said farewell.
- 45:53While I had to stay hidden at home.
- 45:55>>Well, you could scarcely come popping out of the grave
- 45:57without creating a legal snarl.
- 45:59>>I know, I know, it's better this way.
- 46:02I hope we can smuggle me out successfully.
- 46:05>>At night, in Hannah's cape.
- 46:07There'll be no question.
- 46:09>>Nothing left to be done? >>I don't think so.
- 46:12Hannah and William will stay with the house
- 46:14until the estate is sold.
- 46:16And the lawyer will forward us the money wherever we settle.
- 46:19>>[ Chuckles dryly ] "Wherever we settle."
- 46:22You and I...
- 46:23Not much of a life to look forward to.
- 46:26>>It's the best your son left us.
- 46:28>>Your husband!
- 46:29>>Buford. >>Buford.
- 46:33I wonder about his death.
- 46:36>>Why?
- 46:37The doctor certified it as a heart attack.
- 46:41You don't think William... >>Oh, no.
- 46:43William is so simple-minded that if he says he never touched him,
- 46:47he never did.
- 46:48No, it was something else.
- 46:50>>What? >>Uh...
- 46:52Now, that was the same doctor
- 46:54who wrote out my death certificate.
- 46:57You don't suppose Buford, by any chance, could have had...
- 47:02Epilepsy?
- 47:04It's a disease that does run in the family, you know.
- 47:09♪♪
- 47:15>>If Sarah Montgomery should have been right,
- 47:18then poor Buford went to far more than his just reward.
- 47:24After all, the coffin was already in the ground
- 47:28for over a week.
- 47:30But that's really too horrible a prospect to dwell on...
- 47:33isn't it?
- 47:35I'll return shortly.
- 47:37♪♪
- 47:46♪♪
- 47:55Before I go, I really do owe you an apology
- 47:59for that quite dreadful picture of poor Buford Montgomery
- 48:03awaking to far more confined quarters
- 48:06than he condemned his mother to.
- 48:08But as a storyteller, you have to agree --
- 48:12The irony is perfect.
- 48:14And then, of course, also,
- 48:16I did promise to curdle your blood.
