Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard, to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt. Our mission here to uncover the truth,
- 0:43Speaker 1: to confront the myth, and to reclaim the story. On
- 0:46Speaker 1: this bonus episode, we've got some big news to announce.
- 0:49Speaker 1: In We're doing a recap on Patti Smith and the
- 0:51Speaker 1: true crime and Grime at the Chelsea Hotel back in
- 0:54Speaker 1: the day, previewing next week's episode on Grace Jones. Plus
- 0:58Speaker 1: we get into your email's comment dms, and as always,
- 1:02Speaker 1: a whole lot of Rosie. This is the podcast for
- 1:04Speaker 1: the musically obsessed, the outsiders, and the independent thinkers who
- 1:08Speaker 1: know that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:14Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling someone else, all Right, discos.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Let's get into it. Happy first week of April discos. Listen,
- 1:34Speaker 1: I've got some exciting news for you that I've been
- 1:36Speaker 1: having a hard time keeping quiet about, and I'm gonna
- 1:39Speaker 1: spill it right here, right now. Disgraceland and Hollywood Land
- 1:44Speaker 1: are now part of the Exactly Right Network and the
- 1:48Speaker 1: iHeart Podcast Network. Exactly Right is the production company founded
- 1:53Speaker 1: by two badasses named Karen Kilgarriff and Georgia Hardstack, who
- 1:58Speaker 1: the world knows as the wildly successful hosts of the
- 2:02Speaker 1: My Favorite Murder podcast. I've been friends with Karen and
- 2:05Speaker 1: Georgia for a while now. They were two of the
- 2:09Speaker 1: first established podcasters to support Disgraceland. Back in the first
- 2:15Speaker 1: month of Disgraceland's existence, they talked about the show on
- 2:19Speaker 1: their podcast on My Favorite Murder. They appeared with me
- 2:23Speaker 1: a couple years later, about a year and a half
- 2:24Speaker 1: later at my book signing in Los Angeles. They had
- 2:28Speaker 1: me guest on an episode of My Favorite Murder a
- 2:30Speaker 1: couple of years after that, and we always kind of
- 2:33Speaker 1: felt like we were going to eventually work with each
- 2:36Speaker 1: other in some way, and now we are. Exactly Right
- 2:41Speaker 1: is part of the iHeart Podcast Network, so that means
- 2:44Speaker 1: that Disgraceland is now once again part of iHeart, and
- 2:48Speaker 1: I could not be happier about that. I had the
- 2:50Speaker 1: best time working with iHeart previously. The folks over there
- 2:54Speaker 1: who worked there, they really really know how to support talent.
- 2:57Speaker 1: So this is a match made in podcasts heaven, as
- 3:00Speaker 1: somebody said a couple weeks ago. So what does all
- 3:03Speaker 1: this mean for you guys, the listeners, Well, it means
- 3:06Speaker 1: that you're with me as always, and now a bunch
- 3:09Speaker 1: of other potentially new fans of Disgraceland who are going
- 3:12Speaker 1: to hear about this show now on a regular basis
- 3:15Speaker 1: from the folks at Exactly Right and iHeart, and we're
- 3:18Speaker 1: all going hand in hand, full steam ahead into this
- 3:21Speaker 1: next phase of the show together. The Murder Renos, the
- 3:25Speaker 1: fans of My Favorite Murder, are some of the most
- 3:27Speaker 1: passionate podcast and true crime fans on the planet, And
- 3:32Speaker 1: like Karen and Georgia, I know that they have great
- 3:35Speaker 1: taste in music. So the ones that I've met have
- 3:37Speaker 1: told me this, the ones that I've spoken to online
- 3:39Speaker 1: I can tell so this is really really going to
- 3:42Speaker 1: be a great partnership. We've got some exciting conversations going
- 3:45Speaker 1: on about how to grow Disgraceland even bigger than it
- 3:48Speaker 1: already is, about potential new content, new storytelling. Maybe I'll
- 3:51Speaker 1: start making some more appearances out there in the world
- 3:54Speaker 1: this year and on other podcasts. I'm not really sure
- 3:58Speaker 1: yet what I'm going to be doing, but all I
- 4:00Speaker 1: know is that it just feels good to once again
- 4:03Speaker 1: have partners to help myself and the folks over here
- 4:06Speaker 1: at Double Elvis. And the fact that it's these partners,
- 4:09Speaker 1: partners who really get the show, partners who really get
- 4:12Speaker 1: me as a creative person. I am just stoked, okay,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and I think you guys are going to be stoked
- 4:18Speaker 1: as well with the results. Now, if for some reason
- 4:21Speaker 1: you have not heard of or heard my Favorite Murder,
- 4:25Speaker 1: it's quite literally one of the biggest podcasts on the planet.
- 4:30Speaker 1: What Karen and Georgia have built with their show and
- 4:34Speaker 1: now with the Exactly Right network is super impressive. I
- 4:37Speaker 1: was out at their studio in La a couple of
- 4:39Speaker 1: weeks ago, and I was blown away by their growing
- 4:43Speaker 1: empire and also frankly by the folks who work at
- 4:46Speaker 1: Exactly Right. They couldn't have been cooler or more supportive
- 4:49Speaker 1: of Disgraceland and Hollywoodland. They're true fans. Same goes for
- 4:53Speaker 1: the iHeart folks that I ran into in Austin a
- 4:57Speaker 1: few weeks before that. When I was out in La
- 5:00Speaker 1: Though at Exactly Right, I sat down to film an
- 5:04Speaker 1: episode of My Favorite Murder with Karen and Georgia that's
- 5:07Speaker 1: out today. You can watch that on Netflix right now,
- 5:12Speaker 1: or listen to it on Apple Podcasts or in the
- 5:15Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts. This interview, though,
- 5:18Speaker 1: it's going to give you, guys, some insight into our friendship,
- 5:22Speaker 1: how it's grown over the years, and likely some history
- 5:26Speaker 1: on Disgraceland that you've never heard before, so check that out.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Disgraceland has been independent since twenty twenty three, and we've
- 5:37Speaker 1: had a lot of offers to partner with folks at
- 5:40Speaker 1: some pretty awesome networks podcast professionals who are making great,
- 5:45Speaker 1: award winning culture shifting content. But in the end, we
- 5:48Speaker 1: decided to go with exactly Right in iHeart, mainly because
- 5:52Speaker 1: of the comfort level that I have with these folks
- 5:54Speaker 1: as a creator, as a writer, as an artist, as
- 5:56Speaker 1: a podcaster. Karen Georgia, the folks at Exactly Right Now,
- 6:00Speaker 1: they really understand the show and the absolute pros overt.
- 6:04Speaker 1: iHeart totally understand talent and how to give talent the
- 6:07Speaker 1: right tools to grow. So that's why we made this
- 6:10Speaker 1: jump when we made it, and you can hear it
- 6:13Speaker 1: in my voice. I'm stoked, Zeth, Matt, Jamie, everybody here
- 6:17Speaker 1: at Double Elvis. We're all super excited and you're gonna
- 6:20Speaker 1: get some of that excitement in the Netflix my favorite
- 6:24Speaker 1: murder interview that's up on Netflix right now, and also,
- 6:26Speaker 1: like I said, it's available in audio wherever you get
- 6:28Speaker 1: your podcasts, so check that out. You know what else
- 6:31Speaker 1: is available right now? Something else that I'm very excited about,
- 6:36Speaker 1: something that we've been working very hard on these last
- 6:39Speaker 1: few weeks, harder than we not to say that we
- 6:41Speaker 1: don't give every episode our all, but something about this
- 6:44Speaker 1: Patti Smith story really really pulled us in and it's
- 6:49Speaker 1: a unique take on her story that you're not going
- 6:52Speaker 1: to get anywhere else. I'm pretty pretty hyped on the
- 6:56Speaker 1: production and what Matt put together with the score and
- 7:00Speaker 1: the audio, and we worked with our old friend Ryan
- 7:03Speaker 1: on this score as well, and just cannot wait for
- 7:06Speaker 1: you to hear this Patty Smith episode of Disgraceland. If
- 7:09Speaker 1: you have not already. Now, if you have heard it,
- 7:13Speaker 1: you're fully aware of how this is a true crime story.
- 7:16Speaker 1: But if you haven't, you might be saying to yourself,
- 7:18Speaker 1: wait a minute, Patty Smith's story is true crime. Patti
- 7:24Speaker 1: Smith didn't kill anyone. Patty Smith was never busted for
- 7:28Speaker 1: anything serious. So how is Patti Smith a subject of disgraceland. Well,
- 7:36Speaker 1: as you'll hear when you listen, or as you might
- 7:39Speaker 1: have already heard, Patty Smith's story is steeped in true crime. Kidnapping,
- 7:45Speaker 1: Charles Manson, the Son of Sam chalk outlines of dead
- 7:49Speaker 1: bodies on the New York streets, blood splattered walls, junkie poets,
- 7:54Speaker 1: shotgun wielding novelists. This episode has it all, with the
- 7:57Speaker 1: godmother of punk at the center of it. You're gonna
- 8:00Speaker 1: dig it, trust me now. Patti Smith's story takes place
- 8:04Speaker 1: in part at the Chelsea Hotel in the late sixties
- 8:08Speaker 1: and early seventies, a hotel where a lot of great
- 8:12Speaker 1: culture was created, a lot of drugs were taken, some
- 8:16Speaker 1: people died, some people lived to tell about it. And
- 8:20Speaker 1: because of all this this lore, the Chelsea has been
- 8:25Speaker 1: depicted in numerous movies, some good, some bad. And Zeth
- 8:31Speaker 1: and I are going to talk about our favorites in
- 8:33Speaker 1: the exclusive section of this after party. Go to disgracelandpod
- 8:36Speaker 1: dot com to sign up to become an all access
- 8:38Speaker 1: member of Disgraceland to unlock exclusive content like this plus
- 8:42Speaker 1: ad free listening. Okay, new Patti Smith, that's the episode
- 8:48Speaker 1: in your feed right now. Rewind episode coming this Sunday.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Yes again, if you didn't get the message last week,
- 8:53Speaker 1: Rewinds are now on Sunday. The Rewind episode this week
- 8:57Speaker 1: right after this after party bonus episode that you are
- 9:00Speaker 1: listening to our rewind episode, We're dipping back into our
- 9:04Speaker 1: archive of over two hundred and fifty episodes to bring
- 9:07Speaker 1: you our Taylor Swift story and the batshit craziness that
- 9:12Speaker 1: involves her many many stalkers and the links Taylor Swift
- 9:15Speaker 1: has had to go through to just keep making music
- 9:18Speaker 1: and you know, keep yourself safe. You're not gonna want
- 9:21Speaker 1: to miss this if you haven't heard it, and if
- 9:24Speaker 1: you have heard it, you know it's there for you
- 9:26Speaker 1: to check out again on new Sunday. Sundays are a good,
- 9:28Speaker 1: good podcast listening day. They really are got to breakaway.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I know, I know everyone's got their routines, you know,
- 9:34Speaker 1: but I'm typically making podcasts during the week. You know,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I don't have a commute, so I'm i'm I'm listening
- 9:41Speaker 1: on Sundays. Maybe you're like me. I don't know. Let
- 9:44Speaker 1: me know. Let me know when you listen to podcasts,
- 9:45Speaker 1: and how what your podcast listening routine is. I'm curious
- 9:48Speaker 1: six one seven, nine oh six six sixty three eight
- 9:50Speaker 1: voicemail antext at Disgrace Lampod on the socials. Hit me
- 9:53Speaker 1: up in the Patreon chat as well. That's a surefire
- 9:56Speaker 1: way to get my attention quickly. But back to the
- 10:00Speaker 1: agenda here, We've got, like I said, Patty Smith, new
- 10:02Speaker 1: episode right now, Taylor Swift rewind coming up next after
- 10:05Speaker 1: this bonus after party, and then next week our new
- 10:08Speaker 1: episode on Grace Jones. And I don't know about you guys,
- 10:12Speaker 1: but for me, growing up in the eighties and the nineties,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I was kind of like, who the hell is this person?
- 10:18Speaker 1: Who is Grace Jones. She's beautiful, she's hot, she's sexy,
- 10:23Speaker 1: but she's also masculine, you know, but this is weird contrast.
- 10:26Speaker 1: And she was in the eighties and nineties, more so
- 10:29Speaker 1: the eighties, she was everywhere, But I was always kind
- 10:32Speaker 1: of like, what the hell, what does she do? What's
- 10:35Speaker 1: her thing? Is she a singer? Is she an actor?
- 10:38Speaker 1: Is she Max Headroom's mistress? Why do I care? Why
- 10:41Speaker 1: don't I care?
- 10:42Speaker 2: More?
- 10:43Speaker 1: Well, we dug into Grace Jones and surprise, there's a
- 10:47Speaker 1: bunch of true crime at the core, at the heart
- 10:50Speaker 1: of her story. And bonus, I got to learn more
- 10:54Speaker 1: about this incredible artist when we got into making this episode.
- 10:58Speaker 1: So when you're listening to it, when you listen to
- 11:00Speaker 1: the new episode on Grace Jones next week and thinking
- 11:02Speaker 1: about Grace Jones and her multi hyphenate career, try to
- 11:07Speaker 1: answer this question, which of your favorite musicians successfully made
- 11:13Speaker 1: the transition to acting or conversely, which of your favorite
- 11:18Speaker 1: actors or successfully made the transition to becoming a rockstar?
- 11:24Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight
- 11:27Speaker 1: call me, leave me a voicemail with your answer, send
- 11:29Speaker 1: me a text if you're shy, hit me up at
- 11:31Speaker 1: Disgrace lamp Pod on the Socials, Disgrace Lampod at gmail
- 11:35Speaker 1: dot com on email. All right, disc goes, I want
- 11:39Speaker 1: to hear from you guys right now. Actually, so six
- 11:41Speaker 1: one seven nine o six six six three eight to
- 11:43Speaker 1: get in touch your voicemails and texts on last week's
- 11:46Speaker 1: Question of the Week on the other side.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Of this break.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Okay, so you want to be a rock and roll star,
- 12:04Speaker 1: then listen now here what I say. I'm in the
- 12:06Speaker 1: phone booth. It's the one across the hall disco six
- 12:08Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. Last
- 12:11Speaker 1: week's Question of the Week was all about your favorite
- 12:14Speaker 1: musician memoirs, inspired by our episode on Patti Smith and
- 12:18Speaker 1: her incredible memoir Just Kids. Won the National Book Award
- 12:22Speaker 1: for that, and I asked you guys what you thought,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and you gave me some great answers on your favorite
- 12:27Speaker 1: music memoirs. Let's hear from Daniel in the seven oh seven.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, this is Daniel from beautiful sunny Humble County, California.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Thank you climate Change. Not sure if you've ever had
- 12:39Speaker 3: a seven oh seven area call before, but here you go.
- 12:42Speaker 3: So as to the autobiography question, flash suggestion. I've been
- 12:47Speaker 3: very much enjoying the punk and pre punk bands of
- 12:50Speaker 3: the seventies you've been covering, and just this last month
- 12:54Speaker 3: I read the book cheat Uh Chrome, a Dead Boy's
- 12:57Speaker 3: Tale by the guitarist of the Dead Boys, who he
- 13:01Speaker 3: was originally from Rocket from the Tunes, but then he
- 13:04Speaker 3: joined the Dead Boys, which was a very early, very
- 13:08Speaker 3: engaging punk band in the mid early seventies, very much
- 13:12Speaker 3: a part of that whole New York CBGV Maxis Kansas
- 13:15Speaker 3: City time and place. That's so fascinating. And you've been
- 13:19Speaker 3: covering a lot of he knew and he ran, and
- 13:21Speaker 3: he played with all of those key bands, you know,
- 13:24Speaker 3: Ramon's Iggy Pop, the Guys from the Dolls, Johnny Thunders,
- 13:28Speaker 3: Rich a hell from TV television. I mean, and you
- 13:32Speaker 3: know the book is in it's equal parts of self serving, vulnerable, egotistical,
- 13:37Speaker 3: all the classic rock and roll punk stuff we know
- 13:40Speaker 3: and love. So that's kind of my suggestion. It's a
- 13:44Speaker 3: little bit of a deep cut Dead Boys not really
- 13:47Speaker 3: talked about enough as a band.
- 13:48Speaker 2: So cool.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Thank you, Buck.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Daniel, Daniel Daniel, thank you for your voice memo in
- 13:54Speaker 1: reminding me that we need to do an episode on
- 13:57Speaker 1: the Dead Boys, or perhaps just on Stive Baters. But
- 14:01Speaker 1: this sounds like the main research source is Cheetah Cromb's book,
- 14:05Speaker 1: which you're mentioning here, And I appreciate you for that
- 14:08Speaker 1: I've always wanted to do an episode on Stive Baters.
- 14:11Speaker 1: This is one of the first I considered doing way
- 14:13Speaker 1: back in the day, prior to that first batch of stories.
- 14:17Speaker 1: It was on the list with Jerry Lee, Lewis, Sid
- 14:20Speaker 1: and Nancy, the Norwegian Black Metal Murders, Sam Cook, Lisa Lefti, Lopez,
- 14:26Speaker 1: all that stuff, and the Dead Boys were on that list.
- 14:29Speaker 1: I think because I don't remember if I read about
- 14:33Speaker 1: Stive Bader's death for the first time in the Legs
- 14:36Speaker 1: McNeil's Please Kill Me, but that book was instrumental in
- 14:39Speaker 1: getting me to start this podcast, and just the idea
- 14:43Speaker 1: that the way I heard it or read it, I
- 14:46Speaker 1: can't remember, Stive Baters was hit by a car and
- 14:51Speaker 1: refused to go to the hospital. She used to punk
- 14:53Speaker 1: rock or whatever, and ended up succumbing to his injuries
- 14:56Speaker 1: and dying, which is just mind blowing to me. And
- 15:00Speaker 1: I'm sure that's all in Cheetah Crome's memoir and I
- 15:02Speaker 1: can't wait to get into it. Thank you Daniel for
- 15:06Speaker 1: your voicemail. Appreciate it all. Right, same subject, Let's go
- 15:09Speaker 1: to the nine one six.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, this is mister Taylor from Raleigh, North Carolina
- 15:14Speaker 2: calling in to respond to the question of the week
- 15:17Speaker 2: about the best rock and roll autobiographies or memoirs. And
- 15:22Speaker 2: I guess, if I was being cheeky, I would say
- 15:24Speaker 2: Cash by Johnny Cash. But it's not. It's not even
- 15:26Speaker 2: a rock and roll memoir. Quite frankly, the book is
- 15:29Speaker 2: Born Standing Up by Steve Martin. You know, I read
- 15:33Speaker 2: this when I was starting to get into stand up
- 15:35Speaker 2: comedy and was doing some shows locally, and I wanted
- 15:38Speaker 2: to go back and read about the great comedy luminaries.
- 15:42Speaker 2: And quite frankly, I didn't even understand Steve Martin when
- 15:45Speaker 2: I was a kid in the nineties. He was already
- 15:46Speaker 2: into his Father of the Bride Cheaper by the Dozen phase.
- 15:51Speaker 2: But I went read the book and it's incredible, And
- 15:55Speaker 2: you know what struck me it was so interesting is that,
- 15:58Speaker 2: you know, Steve Martin got a job at Disneyland when
- 16:00Speaker 2: he was ten years old. He worked there till he
- 16:02Speaker 2: was eighteen. By the time he was twenty, he was
- 16:05Speaker 2: doing a dozen shows a week at the Magic Store
- 16:08Speaker 2: at Nottsberry Farm. I mean, if you want to think
- 16:11Speaker 2: about it, the Milcolm Gladwell sence, I mean, he got
- 16:14Speaker 2: his ten thousand hours by the time he even reached maturity,
- 16:18Speaker 2: so it's no surprise that he burst onto the scene.
- 16:21Speaker 2: He was a fully formed comedian and was a rock
- 16:24Speaker 2: star in his own right, so much so that he
- 16:27Speaker 2: quit comedy when he was thirty years old at the
- 16:29Speaker 2: peak of his powers. And it was just a fascinating book,
- 16:34Speaker 2: an amazing read. Steve Martin has become just such a
- 16:37Speaker 2: big part of pop culture and comedy and film, but
- 16:42Speaker 2: I didn't really understand his position in the world of
- 16:45Speaker 2: creating the idea of rock star comedians. So it was
- 16:49Speaker 2: a great book. Highly recommends. Appreciate everything you do RockA
- 16:53Speaker 2: ROLLA nine one six.
- 16:55Speaker 1: This is another one that I'm grateful to be reminded
- 16:57Speaker 1: of the Steve Martin. Well, he's a musician actually, but
- 17:01Speaker 1: more comedian and I've heard this is fantastic. It's one
- 17:06Speaker 1: of those things that numerous people have told me about.
- 17:09Speaker 1: I seem to always forget about it, and to be honest,
- 17:12Speaker 1: I'm not always looking for music content in my spare
- 17:15Speaker 1: time to sit back and chill with, but this one
- 17:19Speaker 1: seems to be special, so I appreciate you bringing it
- 17:22Speaker 1: to my attention. And no shade on the Johnny The
- 17:25Speaker 1: Johnny Cash autobiography is mentioned all the time because it's
- 17:28Speaker 1: truly great. You can ask John Cusack's character in High
- 17:32Speaker 1: Fidelity about it. It's that great line I've read books
- 17:38Speaker 1: or whatever he says. And by the way, High Fidelity
- 17:41Speaker 1: is the next movie that we are covering in our
- 17:44Speaker 1: video podcast on great movie soundtracks and scores that's going
- 17:48Speaker 1: to be coming your way at the end of this month.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Go to disgrace impod dot com to become an all
- 17:52Speaker 1: access member to cop that content. Let's now, however, go
- 17:56Speaker 1: to the nine to seven to zero. Nine to seven
- 18:00Speaker 1: to zero had a great memoir recommendation, Matt, this is
- 18:03Speaker 1: a voice memo, not a voicemailble go ahead and find
- 18:05Speaker 1: that and play that for us, please.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Jake Artist Memoirs, rock and Roll Memoirs, Okay, Bill Graham
- 18:15Speaker 5: My Life Inside Rock and Out his memoir of being
- 18:23Speaker 5: born into Nazi Germany just before.
- 18:27Speaker 6: The war, being half a step ahead of the Nazis,
- 18:30Speaker 6: through the war, landing in an orphanage up the Hudson
- 18:35Speaker 6: River like Schenectady, getting adopted and brought to the Bronx,
- 18:42Speaker 6: learning about Latin music while living in the Five Boroughs
- 18:47Speaker 6: bouncing around being an actor, doing other things.
- 18:51Speaker 7: Finally landing on the West Coast and really hitting his
- 18:54Speaker 7: stride at about thirty three years old, when he found
- 18:58Speaker 7: all of the San Francisco musicians had no fucking business
- 19:02Speaker 7: sense and they're getting their asses kicked in the business world.
- 19:05Speaker 4: And then he went on to change the world. His
- 19:11Speaker 4: memoir also speaks about things like when to know how
- 19:14Speaker 4: to get off the wheel, and people howled when he
- 19:18Speaker 4: closed the Filmore East and the Fillmore West and stopped
- 19:22Speaker 4: certain other projects, but he knew better, he had a sense,
- 19:26Speaker 4: and then how to deal with conflict.
- 19:29Speaker 7: And what fucking big balls he had. So that's the
- 19:33Speaker 7: one that I would recommend. Bill Graham My Life Inside
- 19:36Speaker 7: Rock and Out.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Oh yes, Bill Graham. Bill Graham's autobiography. Bill Graham, great
- 19:43Speaker 1: rock and roll promoter, one of the best, guy who
- 19:45Speaker 1: kind of broke the mold, guy who kind of invented
- 19:47Speaker 1: the business in a lot of ways. I read this
- 19:49Speaker 1: book in high school, one of the of the I
- 19:53Speaker 1: think I read it right around the time I read
- 19:55Speaker 1: Helter Skelter, and I never think of of how formative
- 19:58Speaker 1: Bill Graham's autobiography he is to this show. But pretty
- 20:02Speaker 1: damn formative. I'll never forget his depiction nine to seven
- 20:07Speaker 1: zero of Otis Redding and seeing Otis Redding live for
- 20:11Speaker 1: the first time on his stage, and he describes him
- 20:14Speaker 1: as pure sex. And I read that as like a
- 20:18Speaker 1: fifteen year old and I didn't know what to what
- 20:20Speaker 1: to make of that. I didn't know what he meant.
- 20:23Speaker 1: I didn't know what I didn't know, and then I
- 20:25Speaker 1: started I think I saw the Otis Redding. I know, yeah,
- 20:30Speaker 1: I did. I saw the Otis Redding live at Monterey Footage,
- 20:34Speaker 1: and I got it. I was like, oh shit, I
- 20:36Speaker 1: know what Bill Graham was talking about. Great book. Bill
- 20:39Speaker 1: Graham will be an episode of Just Gray Sam at
- 20:42Speaker 1: some point. Thank you. Nine to seven zero, all right
- 20:45Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight,
- 20:47Speaker 1: Send me a voicemail, send me a text. If you're
- 20:49Speaker 1: shy five one two Allison hits us up. Hey, I'm
- 20:53Speaker 1: super excited about the new season. Teresa, Teresa, I think
- 20:58Speaker 1: she means there there are some great story about Rookie
- 21:01Speaker 1: ericson Rocky Erics. Excuse me, it is a ridiculous arrest
- 21:04Speaker 1: and stint at the mental hospital. That's gonna be uh yeah,
- 21:08Speaker 1: that's that's coming eventually. Not on our list of next episodes.
- 21:12Speaker 1: We'll be covering that story soon enough, Allison, thank you
- 21:15Speaker 1: so much. Erica from the seven to one nine is
- 21:18Speaker 1: recommending a Girl in a Band by Kim Gordon, which
- 21:23Speaker 1: I own. I've yet to read it. I've skimmed it.
- 21:27Speaker 1: And now this Courtney Love interview with Billy Corgan, it's
- 21:30Speaker 1: got me one. It's it's so kind of Caddy. I
- 21:34Speaker 1: shouldn't be into it, but I'm just, I'm just I
- 21:38Speaker 1: got I got a lot of Kim Gordon intrigue right now.
- 21:41Speaker 1: The fact that Courtney Love is talking shit about Kim
- 21:44Speaker 1: Gordon makes me kind of like Kim Gordon even more,
- 21:47Speaker 1: if that makes sense. I mean, Courtney Love not the
- 21:51Speaker 1: most reliable narrator, though I'm endlessly fascinated by her. And
- 21:55Speaker 1: there will be an episode on Kim Gordon at some point,
- 22:00Speaker 1: and I don't know what it's gonna be, but I
- 22:02Speaker 1: know I know that there's some them true crime there.
- 22:06Speaker 1: If there is for Patty Smith, there's gonna be for
- 22:07Speaker 1: Kim Gordon. That's all I gotta say. So we're gonna
- 22:09Speaker 1: figure that one out. Four, two five, Hey, Jake. Julia
- 22:11Speaker 1: from Seattle listening to the Patti Smith bit and it
- 22:14Speaker 1: brought me back to La nineteen seventy eight when I
- 22:16Speaker 1: got to see Patti Smith outside the Hollywood Liquorice Pizza
- 22:20Speaker 1: record store. It was insane. We're huge fans. And later
- 22:24Speaker 1: that summer, my crew and I saw television at the
- 22:27Speaker 1: Roxy just kitty corner to the Licorice Pizza. Such great
- 22:29Speaker 1: music rock a ROLLA yeah, wow, that's something you saw
- 22:34Speaker 1: some seminal rock and roll there, unreal. Thanks for the
- 22:38Speaker 1: text six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Guys who want to hit me up on anything, that's
- 22:43Speaker 1: how you do it via the voicemail and the text
- 22:47Speaker 1: can also email me Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com. Okay,
- 22:52Speaker 1: this email comes from Scott Harwood, who writes in Rock Memoirs.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Dave Grohl. I haven't read this yet. I'm reading it
- 22:59Speaker 1: for the first time now. On the mic, message says, hey,
- 23:02Speaker 1: I'm a sixty eight model gen X who grew up
- 23:05Speaker 1: in that sweet spot of being thirteen when no one
- 23:08Speaker 1: here gets out alive. Came out and like most teenage
- 23:11Speaker 1: boys at that time, Jim Morrison was my north star
- 23:13Speaker 1: to the point that I spent the last three years
- 23:15Speaker 1: of high school in military school. I wanted to recommend
- 23:18Speaker 1: Set the Knight on Fire by Doors guitarist Robbie Kreeger.
- 23:21Speaker 1: He does a fantastic job of realigning the myths with
- 23:24Speaker 1: things such as telling us why Jim would have hated
- 23:28Speaker 1: being called Lizard King and why or how the lyrical
- 23:32Speaker 1: mishap on ed Sullivan Girl we Couldn't get much higher
- 23:36Speaker 1: was an innocent mistake of muscle memory responding to stage
- 23:40Speaker 1: fright and nervousness. It wasn't some glorious act of rebellion
- 23:42Speaker 1: against the establishment. Things like that a fantastic read that
- 23:46Speaker 1: I really needed as a fifty ish gen xer. Also,
- 23:49Speaker 1: don't be too hard on Dave Grohl. I grew up
- 23:51Speaker 1: in his neighborhood at the same time, and yeah, he
- 23:53Speaker 1: has a huge ego, and deservedly so, and his nice
- 23:56Speaker 1: guy image has certainly sharpened the knives going into him now.
- 24:00Speaker 1: At the end of the day, he's a married rock
- 24:01Speaker 1: star who cheated on his wife, and I defy you
- 24:04Speaker 1: to name five rock stars who never cheated. And when
- 24:06Speaker 1: you can't, ask yourself why Grohl is catching so much
- 24:09Speaker 1: more shit than the others. He was very close to
- 24:12Speaker 1: his mother and his drummer. He lost them both within
- 24:17Speaker 1: a short period of time. Yeah, and his drummer. He
- 24:18Speaker 1: lost them both in the short period of time. Maybe
- 24:20Speaker 1: give them a little slack. If not, maybe give him
- 24:22Speaker 1: some space rather than comments and judgments. Have I been
- 24:26Speaker 1: unfairly judgmental Dave Grohl as a person? I don't think
- 24:31Speaker 1: I have at all, And I've already written the Foo
- 24:35Speaker 1: Fighters episode, and I think you're going to be. I
- 24:37Speaker 1: don't want to give it away, Scott, but you know
- 24:40Speaker 1: I'm fair, I'm fair, and you're absolutely right about you know,
- 24:46Speaker 1: a guy cheating on his wife, a rock star, excuse me,
- 24:48Speaker 1: cheating on his wife. And it's hard for me to
- 24:50Speaker 1: go there. I mean because look, I think Dave Groll
- 24:54Speaker 1: gets maybe more shit for that than most rock stars do,
- 24:58Speaker 1: because he has such the nice guy image. But dude,
- 25:04Speaker 1: we like I'll do full episodes on musicians and never
- 25:10Speaker 1: once mentioned the infidelities. For some reason, the Dave Grol thing,
- 25:14Speaker 1: it's it's so much part of the story right now,
- 25:17Speaker 1: and I think Dave Groll really wants to show his
- 25:25Speaker 1: family and his fans that he's earnestly trying to get
- 25:30Speaker 1: by this, and I'm not gonna fault him for that.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not even it's just wait, just wait
- 25:37Speaker 1: for the episode. I don't want to burn it here.
- 25:39Speaker 1: But Scott, everybody else, you know, I love Dave Grohl.
- 25:42Speaker 1: I grew up with Dave Grohl, not like you did
- 25:44Speaker 1: in the same neighborhood, but we all feel like we
- 25:47Speaker 1: grew up with Dave Grohl. And you know, whether this
- 25:51Speaker 1: was however, people people have these sort of what's the
- 25:54Speaker 1: word parasocial relationships with rock stars where they really feel
- 25:57Speaker 1: like they know them, and then when they fall it
- 26:00Speaker 1: hurts in a different way. And I think that's part
- 26:02Speaker 1: of what's going on here. But again, I'm not excusing it.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And as far as judgment goes, you're gonna have to
- 26:09Speaker 1: hear the episode that's coming up in a couple weeks.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Disgrace Lampod at gmail dot com. You guys want to
- 26:15Speaker 1: get in touch with me, can also dm me at
- 26:18Speaker 1: disgracelam pod. On the subject of music memoirs, Paula Cook
- 26:22Speaker 1: writes it, Hey, there's a new book by Robbie Robinson
- 26:25Speaker 1: talking about his relationship with Martin Scorsese. Paula, I know
- 26:29Speaker 1: it well well, not well enough. I have that book
- 26:31Speaker 1: literally on my nightstand. It's on a stack of books,
- 26:35Speaker 1: part of a stack of books that I have not
- 26:36Speaker 1: read yet that I want to read before I go
- 26:38Speaker 1: on vacation this summer, so that then I can get
- 26:42Speaker 1: my vacation books all lined up. You know what I'm saying.
- 26:44Speaker 1: These are the books before the books, so to speak,
- 26:46Speaker 1: and I'm woefully behind. But this one, the Robbie Robertson
- 26:51Speaker 1: the Cocaine Book, as I'm calling it, top of the list.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Thanks for the reminder. Paula Cook on where are We Facebook?
- 26:58Speaker 1: Paula Facebook, Paula Cook, thank you. All right, guys, were
- 27:00Speaker 1: gonna come back on the other side with some music recommendations.
- 27:17Speaker 1: All right, guys, welcome back. As you may or may
- 27:19Speaker 1: not know, I was on the Hollywoodland Rap Party this
- 27:22Speaker 1: week doing a little music recommendation bit with Zeth. So
- 27:27Speaker 1: Zeth takes into account our Hollywood and true crime story
- 27:31Speaker 1: from our archive that week, and he creates two new
- 27:34Speaker 1: episodes to accompany hit the Rap Party, in the Screening
- 27:37Speaker 1: Room and in the Rap Party. I'm appearing now regularly again.
- 27:41Speaker 1: Once again, I was doing this prior. I'm going to
- 27:43Speaker 1: continue to do it now because we needed an expansive
- 27:46Speaker 1: place to talk about our recommendations, not just for music,
- 27:49Speaker 1: but for film as well. And Zeth has this really
- 27:53Speaker 1: kind of unique way of being able to tie the
- 27:55Speaker 1: history of film to these questions. These prompts get me
- 28:00Speaker 1: thinking about music in a new way. And he somehow
- 28:04Speaker 1: got this week from because we did the George rees
- 28:07Speaker 1: episode in Hollywood Land. George Reeves, of course played Superman
- 28:11Speaker 1: and there's that whole crime around his story. Anyways, Seth
- 28:15Speaker 1: somehow connected that to actors who make the leap to
- 28:20Speaker 1: doing big, big superhero roles and how that relates to
- 28:25Speaker 1: indie bands making the leap to major labels. And the
- 28:29Speaker 1: question was, you know which, to me, which of those
- 28:32Speaker 1: bands albums would I recommend? So we got into that
- 28:35Speaker 1: over there, and it really had me thinking about a
- 28:39Speaker 1: lot of the hardcore stuff and indie stuff that I
- 28:41Speaker 1: was into in the nineties. I don't want to say
- 28:45Speaker 1: friends of ours, but people we kind of knew from
- 28:47Speaker 1: the hardcore scene who were getting signed beyond the indie
- 28:50Speaker 1: labels that we were on the to these major labels,
- 28:54Speaker 1: and what our reactions to those records were at the time.
- 28:58Speaker 1: And it was a fascinating conversation. Super grateful for Zeth's
- 29:01Speaker 1: big brain for finding a way to get me into
- 29:04Speaker 1: it that way. Check that out. That's the rap Party.
- 29:07Speaker 1: You can just search Hollywood Land and Apple Podcasts or
- 29:10Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts, and
- 29:12Speaker 1: you'll find a bunch of archive episodes there, plus new
- 29:14Speaker 1: ones every week that we're doing. And I use that
- 29:17Speaker 1: as an excuse to recommend I'm not gonna talk about here,
- 29:22Speaker 1: to recommend a TV show that is blowing my mind.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I love it so much. And no, it's not Love Story.
- 29:30Speaker 1: In our text thread, Zeth, myself and Matt are production
- 29:35Speaker 1: slash editorial text thread that we have going every week. Wait,
- 29:38Speaker 1: I want to read it to you because it's just perfect.
- 29:42Speaker 1: This is from Matt and Matt mixes all these episodes
- 29:45Speaker 1: anywhere its and hey, every rap party and after party
- 29:48Speaker 1: conversation lately is just an incremental process of Jake grooming
- 29:52Speaker 1: Zeth to watch Love Story. Ah, I swear that's not
- 29:57Speaker 1: what I'm recommending. Over there, he's gone Love Stories. It's
- 30:01Speaker 1: it's over man, Let it go, Let it go. Okay, So,
- 30:07Speaker 1: but there's something else that I think is actually better.
- 30:10Speaker 1: I got some good TV going on right now, and
- 30:12Speaker 1: I'm talking about that with Zeth in the wrap party.
- 30:14Speaker 1: But I'll also right here i'll talk about I'm loving
- 30:17Speaker 1: DTF Saint Louis. I know a lot of you probably
- 30:20Speaker 1: are as well. It started out slow for me. I
- 30:22Speaker 1: barely I was barely able to hang on, but I'm
- 30:26Speaker 1: so glad that I did. Jason Bateman is on another
- 30:29Speaker 1: level lately. Man just just so so incredibly talented. He's talented.
- 30:36Speaker 1: His acting talent I think has reached a stage of
- 30:41Speaker 1: excellence that is beyond words. For me, I can't actually
- 30:45Speaker 1: describe it. I attempt to in the bonus section of
- 30:49Speaker 1: this after party a little bit with Zeth because we
- 30:50Speaker 1: get into it a little bit. I don't know. I'm
- 30:52Speaker 1: interested to know if you guys are watching the show
- 30:54Speaker 1: six one seven nine, I was six six six three eight,
- 30:56Speaker 1: and what you think really interesting music choices by the way,
- 31:00Speaker 1: Some they hit the ball out of the park. Some
- 31:03Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just like, what what what is that?
- 31:06Speaker 8: What are you doing?
- 31:06Speaker 1: Man? I don't know. It's it's compelling though either way.
- 31:10Speaker 1: But back to music recommendations. We're gonna do, We're gonna do,
- 31:13Speaker 1: We're gonna play an old song new song here. Okay,
- 31:16Speaker 1: the new song that I'm recommending this week that I'm
- 31:19Speaker 1: listening to is Denial is a River by Doci Now
- 31:23Speaker 1: Florida hip hop artist here. This sounds very much like
- 31:28Speaker 1: a nineties New York hip hop artist. She fucking kills.
- 31:32Speaker 1: She's incredible. This song is amazing. This song is. It's
- 31:36Speaker 1: not super new, it's from twenty twenty four, but all
- 31:39Speaker 1: her stuff, her newer stuff, her older stuff, it is
- 31:41Speaker 1: all great. This song is filthy jay Z, not filthy
- 31:45Speaker 1: like just in like a sex way, but just in
- 31:47Speaker 1: like a real kind of just in a real way.
- 31:50Speaker 1: It's a jay Z early Kanye Salt and Peppa, Missy Elliott.
- 31:54Speaker 1: It's all here. But this is it's it's more modern.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I almost said fresh, I didn't, and I know a
- 32:03Speaker 1: lot of you already know about this, and then I'm
- 32:05Speaker 1: late to the party. But I don't care. This shit rules.
- 32:07Speaker 1: I love it Doci, Sean Hastings. If you're listening, go
- 32:10Speaker 1: get that. Anyone else check it out. Old song wreck
- 32:14Speaker 1: Ryan Paris dolce Vita. Now. I don't know anything about
- 32:18Speaker 1: this song except that it came out in nineteen eighty
- 32:19Speaker 1: three and I heard it in some TV show probably
- 32:22Speaker 1: ten years ago. I don't know anything about this artist either.
- 32:26Speaker 1: This is Italian disco. Listen to this song. First of all,
- 32:30Speaker 1: this song is a great sort of mixed starter, all right,
- 32:33Speaker 1: like playlist starter, because it's going to cool you into
- 32:36Speaker 1: a bunch of disco that you've probably never heard of before.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Because this song is obscure ish, people who are into
- 32:42Speaker 1: disco are going to know this, and people who are
- 32:44Speaker 1: into Italian disco are definitely going to know this. But
- 32:47Speaker 1: this song will just make you feel awesome. It'll make
- 32:50Speaker 1: you feel like you know, it'll just no matter where
- 32:52Speaker 1: you are, you're gonna feel like you're in a cool
- 32:54Speaker 1: robe next to a pool at a party with some
- 32:58Speaker 1: really good looking people. That's what this song does. It's
- 33:01Speaker 1: so good. You know that meme that's been going around
- 33:03Speaker 1: the last like twelve months of the two Italian dudes
- 33:06Speaker 1: like smoking cigarettes, you know, you know, off the on
- 33:10Speaker 1: the coast of the Mediterranean. They're just kind of bobbing
- 33:12Speaker 1: their heads to some cool disco. This is the shit
- 33:15Speaker 1: those guys were at one point listening to. I guarantee
- 33:19Speaker 1: it okay. Ryan Paris's Doulce Vita check it out all right.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Earlier in this episode, we were talking about Patti Smith
- 33:28Speaker 1: in the Chelsea Hotel, and for good reason. The Chelsea
- 33:31Speaker 1: is where a large portion of Patty's story or formative story,
- 33:35Speaker 1: i should say, it takes place. And there's a lot
- 33:39Speaker 1: of media, great media that has come out of that
- 33:42Speaker 1: time that Lore and Zeth and I are going to
- 33:45Speaker 1: try to sift through some of it in the exclusive
- 33:48Speaker 1: section of the after Party coming up in just a
- 33:51Speaker 1: few moments. If you're new to the show and you're like,
- 33:54Speaker 1: what is the exclusive section? What the hell are you
- 33:57Speaker 1: talking about? Well, we do a little exclusive content every month.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Every week here in the after Party, you get a
- 34:02Speaker 1: little bit plus you also monthly get access to our
- 34:07Speaker 1: video podcast. This film should be played loud, and you
- 34:10Speaker 1: get access to the Disgraceland Chat and all the Disgrace
- 34:13Speaker 1: and listeners who are hanging out in there. Go to
- 34:15Speaker 1: disgracelandpod dot com to sign up to become an all
- 34:19Speaker 1: Access member. There's all kinds of different tiers and levels
- 34:21Speaker 1: you can sign up. You can even become a free
- 34:23Speaker 1: member if you want. Get in there and we're gonna
- 34:26Speaker 1: give you some stuff on the Chelsea that I guarantee
- 34:28Speaker 1: you you probably have not heard of before. All right,
- 34:31Speaker 1: and take a quick break, be right back. All right, guys,
- 34:47Speaker 1: we are back, and before we recap and get out
- 34:50Speaker 1: of here, I want to tell you about our archive.
- 34:52Speaker 1: Most of you know about the archive. If you don't
- 34:54Speaker 1: know about the archive, well, basically you're missing out on
- 34:57Speaker 1: about two hundred and fifty stories artists from every genre
- 35:00Speaker 1: and the true crimes that they've either committed or have
- 35:02Speaker 1: affected them in some way. It doesn't matter what genre
- 35:05Speaker 1: of music you are interested in, you're going to find
- 35:08Speaker 1: an artist from that genre in our archive. Amy Winehouse,
- 35:13Speaker 1: Grateful Dead, Tina Turner, Ike Turner, Chuck Berry, The Beatles,
- 35:18Speaker 1: The Stones, Azzy Metallica, It goes on and on, Motley Crue,
- 35:23Speaker 1: so Many Me as a PoTA from the Gets, Lana
- 35:26Speaker 1: del Rey, Travis Scott, on and on and on. Get
- 35:31Speaker 1: into the archive, see what we've been up to for
- 35:34Speaker 1: the past few years here in Disgraceland and let us
- 35:37Speaker 1: know what you think. Hit us back six one seven
- 35:39Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight, voicemail and text
- 35:42Speaker 1: if you got any questions about artists that you maybe
- 35:45Speaker 1: want to listen to in Disgraceland. But can't find hit
- 35:48Speaker 1: me up. I'll point in the right direction or somebody
- 35:49Speaker 1: will here at Double Elves, And as always, Matt will
- 35:52Speaker 1: pull a couple of these stories and put the episode
- 35:55Speaker 1: information in the show notes of this yere after party.
- 35:58Speaker 1: All right, let's recap number one this week Patti Smith.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Our new episode, it's available for you to listen to
