  [SPEAKER_02]: What's up, everybody?
• 0:14
[SPEAKER_02]: Welcome, welcome to a brand new episode of the Sinoffas Live and our 10th and our celebrating our 10th anniversary of the show.
• 0:24
[SPEAKER_02]: I am John Rookjoin, as always by my esteemed co-host.
• 0:28
[SPEAKER_02]: Steve Morris, how are you, Steve?
• 0:30
  [SPEAKER_02]: 10 years?
• 0:31
  [SPEAKER_04]: 10 years.
• 0:32
[SPEAKER_04]: Honestly, I cannot, I cannot believe it's been that long, particularly the last five, like since COVID times, I'm very, very fast.
• 0:40
[SPEAKER_02]: very fast absolutely yeah we gone through a lot of things over those five years but of course our first five years as well so there is so much we're going to get into today and we're also going to hear from you all who are joining us live or listening to us later after we've recorded this live we wanted to take a break.
• 0:58
[SPEAKER_02]: Between Interstellar and getting into Oppenheimer and just the tease you guys, Oppenheimer is going to be a bear of a show considering some of the text messages I've gotten from Steve Morrison, if you were part of our advisory board a couple of days ago you heard about how much we've been how much that movie is going to
• 1:22
  [SPEAKER_02]: Still evolving.
• 1:23
  [SPEAKER_02]: Still changing.
• 1:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Here we go, breaking our rules.
• 1:26
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we had our pseudo Oscar awards, our cinephiles awards.
• 1:29
[SPEAKER_02]: That's what's led to us doing up and hammer.
• 1:31
[SPEAKER_02]: We've got some more news to announce today.
• 1:33
[SPEAKER_02]: And we're going to hear from some you all some of your comments in the Facebook group who left a lot of comments to the questions we asked this week as well.
• 1:42
[SPEAKER_02]: And here from some people who recorded some positive comments about or how they came to our show and what have you here on.
• 1:50
[SPEAKER_02]: the chair on the show.
• 1:50
[SPEAKER_02]: So Steve, what are your thoughts here at 10 years?
• 1:54
[SPEAKER_02]: Where are you at on this?
• 1:55
[SPEAKER_02]: What's your feelings about the show?
• 1:56
  [SPEAKER_02]: Where are what?
• 1:57
[SPEAKER_02]: What do you want to say to the fans as we open up this the show?
• 2:00
[SPEAKER_04]: Uh, I honestly, my thoughts are mostly proud and grateful.
• 2:04
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, like, I, I really feel that, you know, we, me, I'll speak for myself.
• 2:09
[SPEAKER_04]: This is the kind of show I wanted to listen to.
• 2:12
[SPEAKER_04]: And I feel like we're making that kind of show.
• 2:14
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 2:15
[SPEAKER_04]: And just the fact that the, there've been a lot of things in my life that I was proud of that I was excited to share and that didn't find an audience and the fact that.
• 2:25
[SPEAKER_04]: people have responded the way that they've responded to the show.
• 2:28
[SPEAKER_04]: And for as long as they have I mean there are so many comments we got from people that is like I was with you from from day one I was yes, for eight years I found you seven years ago and I've been listening I mean that's yeah no more it truly truly warms my heart.
• 2:44
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, I'm going back in preparation.
• 2:46
[SPEAKER_02]: First of all, reading the compliments or the comments.
• 2:48
[SPEAKER_02]: So should we not all compliments comments?
• 2:50
[SPEAKER_02]: We got from some of our fans on the Facebook post.
• 2:53
[SPEAKER_02]: It really kind of shook me down memory lane and I'm always kind of blown away that people
• 3:01
[SPEAKER_02]: have listened to our show for numerous years and take us with them as they go on long trips, as we heard from a judge on our advisory board conversation, but also people take us gardening, people who take us on bike rides, people who take us to work out at the gym, people take us on hikes, things that I used to do.
• 3:21
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure you do too, when you go with your podcast, you listen to your podcast.
• 3:24
[SPEAKER_02]: The fact that our show is at that level in terms of quality and interest,
• 3:30
[SPEAKER_02]: amongst our fanbase that they take it wherever they go and whatever they're doing to listen to us and have us in their ear.
• 3:37
[SPEAKER_02]: So there's a chance that you and I could be in a public place separately or together and walk past someone who's actually listening to us on their earphone just like we might be listening to someone else on their from their podcast on our earphones and that's always very humbling and amazing to think about and the fact that we
• 4:00
[SPEAKER_04]: It's certainly, as I've said to you many times, this is the longest creative partnership of my life, you know?
• 4:05
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's one where you and I, it's not like, oh, I worked with this one, this person for a bit, and then didn't work with them in four years later, worked with them again.
• 4:14
[SPEAKER_04]: You and I are doing this, have been doing this every single week for 10 years.
• 4:19
[SPEAKER_04]: that's that alone is pretty amazing and it's true what you say I mean they're all sorts of podcasts that I listen to when I'm out walking or driving or working out or whatever it is and it's so funny because I have formed these strange parasocial relationships with people that are in my years all the time who I'd neither met nor spoken to.
• 4:39
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's weird to me that, oh, there are people that have that with you and I like that we are the voices that they're arguing with and you know, we saw this a lot in the comments of I couldn't wait to hear what Roko would think about this or I totally disagreed with what Steve said about that and that's super cool, you know, to tend to be a part of people's lives that way, yeah.
• 5:01
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I mean, for those who may be, as I said, later on, we're going to read some of the comments you all left on Facebook.
• 5:07
[SPEAKER_02]: We've got some audio stuff for people as well from people left some messages for us to play here on the show, but I want to ask you Steve like, um,
• 5:26
[SPEAKER_02]: of the cinephiles and us coming together to do it in all of that because I think people know the story and we can tell that story as well after you answer, but like, what are your first memories of it?
• 5:37
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I mean, you, you, you, your Freudian sleep slip is actually my first memory because there is no, there is no cinephiles without the top ten show.
• 5:44
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, the top ten show is like a critical, I mean, obviously it's a critical for you and it's the, your first church, huge podcast and all that stuff.
• 5:53
[SPEAKER_04]: But for me, it was, you know, I'd listen to the top 10 show.
• 5:57
[SPEAKER_04]: I'd hear you talk about an amazing movie for six minutes or something.
• 6:03
[SPEAKER_04]: And I would go, but there's so much more to say.
• 6:05
[SPEAKER_04]: And why are you talking about this?
• 6:07
  [SPEAKER_04]: And so that's...
• 6:08
[SPEAKER_04]: That's my parasocial relationship with you.
• 6:10
[SPEAKER_04]: I had a real relationship with no-stive met him a few times, but didn't ever real relationship.
• 6:15
[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm sitting there going like, no, I want to get into more.
• 6:18
[SPEAKER_04]: I want more stuff on this.
• 6:20
[SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, as I've said many times, this was right after the assistance had come out and really not come out.
• 6:28
[SPEAKER_04]: And I got swindled out of a lot of stuff from that horrible sales agent.
• 6:32
[SPEAKER_04]: And then I made the second great white shark movie
• 6:36
[SPEAKER_04]: played in Europe and wasn't going to play in the United States.
• 6:39
[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, here's this thing I'm really proud of.
• 6:41
[SPEAKER_04]: I can't get anyone to see it.
• 6:43
[SPEAKER_04]: And I was sad and frustrated and I pretty much went.
• 6:47
[SPEAKER_04]: John Roka seems to have something going on here.
• 6:50
[SPEAKER_04]: And the combination of my frustration with the top 10 show and Wani, not the, I love the top 10 show.
• 6:55
[SPEAKER_04]: I was a huge fan, but wanting more and looking for what can I do that's actually going to
• 7:03
[SPEAKER_04]: Talk to an audience rather than jumping in on another three-year project that may or may not go anywhere.
• 7:08
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, and so that, to me, that's the origin.
• 7:11
[SPEAKER_04]: And then I humbly called you up and said, Hey, John.
• 7:17
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I remember that call.
• 7:20
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and at the time I was doing a bunch of shows and I wasn't sure I wanted to do another show, but then, you know, I'd always enjoyed our conversations about film.
• 7:27
[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, with our friends as well, but also our one-on-one conversations because I was gravitated to people who could have a deeper appreciation in movies.
• 7:36
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I always grew up that way, right?
• 7:38
[SPEAKER_02]: I was just kind of enjoyed going into the Nooks and Cranney and the bones and movies.
• 7:43
[SPEAKER_02]: I used to watch special features at Nazium when they first started coming up on discs in the 90s.
• 7:49
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I really kind of dove into that.
• 7:51
  [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, some of the,
• 7:52
[SPEAKER_02]: The VHS ones and the 80s that I would watch some of the special features and weren't that many in the year, but in the 90s, this is where it really exploded and you could watch these ducks.
• 7:59
[SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, this is great.
• 8:00
[SPEAKER_02]: This has been getting into reading about the films and the analysis and the interviews and all of that stuff.
• 8:06
[SPEAKER_02]: And they're all of it interested me.
• 8:07
[SPEAKER_02]: So when when I came to LA, getting to meet people and become friends with people.
• 8:12
[SPEAKER_02]: who were deep into discussing the films and the themes and the nuances and the camera work and the cinematography, all of that was such a blast.
• 8:19
[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's like you find your tribe, you find your people and I know for us, those are some of the things that I really enjoyed.
• 8:24
[SPEAKER_02]: So when you pitch the show, I was like, well look, I'm doing a bunch of shows, but I'd be open to it as long as, you know, if you're gonna do the editing and hosting of it, then great, let's do it.
• 8:34
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's kind of how it was born.
• 8:38
  [SPEAKER_02]: And I think,
• 8:39
[SPEAKER_02]: we recorded the first episode in your living room, the first the lives of the large in your living room, and we had no real idea.
• 8:46
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think of the structure, or maybe you had more ideas you were coming in as the host, because you had never really consistently hosted anything before, but here we were, we're gonna start.
• 8:55
  [SPEAKER_04]: I'd never, I'd never hosted anything.
• 8:57
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 8:59
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I think like we had made a couple of decisions, we knew, right, him up with the 10-year rule at the very beginning.
• 9:07
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, we knew we wanted to go in-depth into great films.
• 9:11
[SPEAKER_04]: We had talked about the idea if we had guests that we actually didn't want to have guests on to talk about their own movies because that's the vast majority of podcasts are.
• 9:20
[SPEAKER_02]: People are always talking about themselves.
• 9:22
  [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
• 9:22
  [SPEAKER_04]: We knew that.
• 9:23
[SPEAKER_04]: I know that the how did you come to this film was at the very beginning like that that snap piece other than that I think it was it was pretty darn loose and and you and I both thought recently about going back and checking some of our earlier episodes and yeah the least for me the unnatural sort of NPR voice I had.
• 9:45
[SPEAKER_04]: I was just like, and now we're talking about this film and they go like, you know, they're just like, there was so, I think I was just so stressed about doing it right, yeah, I, it took it took, you know, six months to a year before I felt like I was myself on the my yeah, you know, yeah.
• 10:02
[SPEAKER_02]: I have to say the voice though that you used will put me at ease, like it had that kind of inherent feeling of like, okay, I know where we're taking this thing.
• 10:10
[SPEAKER_02]: So I could sit back and relax.
• 10:12
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't think we had many conversations about like, hey, you're not doing this right.
• 10:15
[SPEAKER_02]: You're not doing that right.
• 10:16
[SPEAKER_02]: It was more, but it was very much about like, just take me where you want to go and I'll happily go there and let's have the discussion, you know, and I almost think it's quaint to think about us doing.
• 10:27
  [SPEAKER_02]: hour and 15.
• 10:28
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I mean, like, hold on, I think I have it if you just to give a reference for people.
• 10:34
[SPEAKER_02]: I think I, or maybe it's a window, because maybe it's in some other thing.
• 10:38
  [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
• 10:38
  [SPEAKER_02]: I have it.
• 10:39
[SPEAKER_02]: I thought I had, oh, you here we go, episode, we go.
• 10:41
[SPEAKER_02]: So here is here are the episodes.
• 10:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Like this is, I mean, an hour and 16 minutes.
• 10:46
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, let me take the graphic down, just to give an idea for people who maybe haven't gone back in time.
• 10:51
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm going to kind of narrate this a little bit for people listening to the podcast.
• 10:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Raise the last start, our first day, June 17th, 2016 or a couple weeks behind for the celebration.
• 11:01
[SPEAKER_02]: Raiders in the last dark an hour and 16th, when we were Kings was an hour and two minutes.
• 11:05
  [SPEAKER_02]: That was our conversation.
• 11:07
[SPEAKER_02]: Superman was an hour and 12 minutes, 1970, super, it's an amadace, an almost three-hour epic.
• 11:12
[SPEAKER_02]: was an hour and 15 minute conversation.
• 11:15
[SPEAKER_02]: It seems consistently steeped that we were about an hour, hour and 15 hour and five for planet EX, reservoir dogs, hour and four.
• 11:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, do you think we'd had a rule?
• 11:23
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I don't remember much about going to do this.
• 11:27
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, did we have a rule of like not going pass an hour and 15 or an hour?
• 11:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Was that our conversation rule?
• 11:33
[SPEAKER_04]: We definitely had conversations about it because I think at the time, like you weren't at a collider yet, but you're obviously working with all those guys and doing this in show.
• 11:42
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think you had gotten sort of a, you know, let's keep it at a, you know, a considerable level, you know, right.
• 11:49
[SPEAKER_04]: And so we're like, okay, we're going to aim for that.
• 11:51
[SPEAKER_04]: And our aim got worse and worse and it became an hour and 20 and an hour and a half.
• 11:55
  [SPEAKER_04]: And I think
• 11:56
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I think part of it was we were having fun, you know, and just just to highlight it and and if I may, maybe I'll even make this announcement, which is for me and I think for you too, Amadeus is the episode where things started to click.
• 12:10
[SPEAKER_04]: Not really anything wrong with those first.
• 12:12
[SPEAKER_04]: I just felt like you felt it and I felt it in the room.
• 12:15
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 12:16
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 12:16
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, oh, this was interesting.
• 12:18
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, it's it went to a different place and we have been talking about redoing Amadeus.
• 12:24
[SPEAKER_04]: For six years now and we've put it on the schedule and taken it off the schedule and put it on and taken it off, and then we were just talking and we went, you know, our 500th episode is coming up.
• 12:36
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and so at this moment on the days is back on the schedule, it might not actually hit.
• 12:42
[SPEAKER_04]: at 500 because don't know how many episodes Oppenheimer's gonna be and there's like some other really big movies coming up.
• 12:48
[SPEAKER_04]: But our goal is that we will finally get back to Amadeus this year to recover it because yeah, even though that was a great conversation an hour and whatever you said it was is not sufficient to get to that movie.
• 13:03
  [SPEAKER_02]: hour and 16 minutes.
• 13:04
[SPEAKER_02]: That's what it was the conversation.
• 13:06
[SPEAKER_02]: But you know what's amazing is so many people reach out to us and tell us how much they go back and listen to those episodes and enjoy those shorter episodes breaking down a film.
• 13:20
[SPEAKER_02]: And maybe we should make another announcement.
• 13:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Are you up for making another announcement?
• 13:23
[SPEAKER_02]: Or should we wait on this announcement to later?
• 13:26
  [SPEAKER_02]: Well, you've already
• 13:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, actually, you know what, we're going to circle back to that.
• 13:33
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to give my way just yet.
• 13:35
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't want to give it away just yet.
• 13:36
[SPEAKER_02]: We only had one big announcement.
• 13:37
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's not go too far into, but I'm looking through the episodes, Steven.
• 13:41
[SPEAKER_02]: We're out, yeah, that must have been the consistent thing for us.
• 13:44
[SPEAKER_02]: So the first episode, where we go past the hour mark,
• 13:50
[SPEAKER_02]: Is an hour and 55 minutes for apocalypse now?
• 13:52
[SPEAKER_02]: Do you remember, is that the watch along or is that actual the Congress actually the conversation?
• 13:57
[SPEAKER_04]: No, it was that the mixture of both.
• 13:59
[SPEAKER_04]: What do we do on that with you remember?
• 14:00
[SPEAKER_04]: So that was the conversation that's it's funny that you picked it because that is it for me that was a huge transformative episode.
• 14:08
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, in terms of editing because because it was sort of because what happened with the show was that
• 14:14
[SPEAKER_04]: Like with Amadeus is the first time I cut, I had an opening, you know, I cut that music in.
• 14:19
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 14:19
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 14:20
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 14:20
[SPEAKER_04]: And that felt really, really good.
• 14:22
[SPEAKER_04]: And then I cut started cutting kind of more things in as we went.
• 14:27
[SPEAKER_04]: But as we did that, it changed, you know, the amount of work got more obviously, but then it sort of changed the way we were doing things.
• 14:32
[SPEAKER_04]: And when we got to Amadeus or Apocalypse now.
• 14:36
[SPEAKER_04]: is that we were kind of talking all over the place.
• 14:39
[SPEAKER_04]: So we would have some really conversation about some cinematography later in the movie, and then we went to the earlier part of the movie, and then we circled to the middle of the movie, and we're kind of just all over the place.
• 14:51
[SPEAKER_04]: And when I sat down to edit it, it was super, super hard.
• 14:55
[SPEAKER_04]: And so I went, well, we can't, I had to keep us from jumping from here to there because I can't find ways to put it together, and right, it's a apocalypse now was where I really started to write down this is everything that happens in the movie and so that's the key evolutionary moment and answer your question what we did, we did a regular episode, but then we did a watch along just the opening, yeah, just yeah, that's right.
• 15:21
[SPEAKER_02]: And that was in my old apartment in Weston.
• 15:23
[SPEAKER_04]: We're seeing your old apartment.
• 15:24
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 15:25
[SPEAKER_02]: I remember that distinctly sitting on those leather couches in front of the TV and recording our watch alone.
• 15:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I mean, that's where we get to about the 34th episode, a 33rd episode when things start to change for us, because Alien is where we went to an hour and a half, then wrath of Khan to an hour and 48 minutes, how much of that is man, so much of that is us.
• 15:51
[SPEAKER_02]: And then it's West Side Story with the Cornous, Milena, and David for an hour and 53 minutes, then Alien for an hour and 44.
• 15:59
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's, that's where we break our cherry a little bit about going farther.
• 16:03
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, it doesn't, it doesn't mean if you look at the history that we start doing things for two hours.
• 16:09
[SPEAKER_02]: But I think that that run of movies,
• 16:11
[SPEAKER_02]: kind of put our foot, not just our toe, but our foot a little bit in the deeper end of going longer on these movies from what I remember.
• 16:20
[SPEAKER_02]: Because we do go back to the hour and 15 mark around Willy Wonka with Yuri for a few times.
• 16:26
[SPEAKER_02]: That was a great, and I love you, Poppollets.
• 16:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 16:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: I agree.
• 16:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 16:30
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 16:30
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 16:30
  [SPEAKER_02]: Fuck grandpa.
• 16:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Josh should be our teacher forever, but then pull fiction of two hours.
• 16:34
  [SPEAKER_02]: Then the graduate effort.
• 16:35
[SPEAKER_02]: So like right this this is the changing time.
• 16:39
[SPEAKER_02]: This is an alien to start trick to to West Side story to aliens.
• 16:43
  [SPEAKER_02]: That run.
• 16:45
[SPEAKER_02]: is what we start breaking our cherry on the hour and 15 mark, then we go to building the beast for an hour 36, leave the weapon we go back down to an hour 15, then we'll be walking an hour 15, then French connection hour, an hour, in saying, then Armageddon hour 18, then pull fiction and pull fiction is what breaks it up.
• 17:03
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, pictures were a break single.
• 17:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, fixing graduate, songs to the lambs, all the presidents men were now going two hours and then we get to our jaws, of course, with our friend Eric Rogers, that's two hours and 15 and then star.
• 17:15
[SPEAKER_02]: So that's kind of where, and it took us kind of a year to get to that point where we felt comfortable enough to go longer.
• 17:23
[SPEAKER_02]: right and I think that's so interesting when you look at the evolution of our show, how we organically as we felt comfortable, started to expand what the show could do and how far and how much we felt the fans would be willing to go along with us because I remember us having those conversations as well should be go to two hours and eventually down the road which we'll get to and say a little bit
• 17:47
  [SPEAKER_02]: breaking it into parts.
• 17:48
[SPEAKER_02]: Do you think fans would be willing to stick around if we broke it into parts?
• 17:51
[SPEAKER_02]: It was that kind of stuff, you know?
• 17:53
[SPEAKER_04]: It's so funny because you've hit on because the way I remember them is that like where the where the show changed and westside story is another huge watershed incredibly difficult to edit.
• 18:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh yeah because because I we had started going in order
• 18:12
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, and now you've, you've led the show a ton of times now too, so it's like, it really takes discipline to like really keep it keep the train going and I wasn't yet at Westside story, the pain I had in the editing room led me to be more disciplined, you know, going forward in terms of how we do the play by play.
• 18:30
  [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
• 18:31
[SPEAKER_04]: I can tell you something else and it's, you know, it's nine years ago.
• 18:34
[SPEAKER_04]: So I don't think it's talking too much out of school.
• 18:37
[SPEAKER_04]: But, you know, there were some growing bit pains in the early days of the cinephiles.
• 18:41
[SPEAKER_04]: You and I weren't always on the same page.
• 18:43
[SPEAKER_04]: We had to figure out how to work together.
• 18:46
[SPEAKER_04]: We had to figure out like kind of what this was.
• 18:48
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 18:49
[SPEAKER_04]: And frankly, I think the reason that French connection is so short, we had had to fight that day.
• 18:54
[SPEAKER_04]: we had lunch, and we had argued about something, and we had not resolved it at that time.
• 19:00
[SPEAKER_04]: We had been in the little diner kind of near my house.
• 19:05
[SPEAKER_04]: And we came back to my house to record, and you and I both went, the show must go on.
• 19:10
[SPEAKER_03]: And so we did it.
• 19:12
[SPEAKER_04]: And it was so funny, because you might have even said, look, I'm a pro, let's go record the show.
• 19:18
[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, okay, let's fucking record the show.
• 19:20
[SPEAKER_04]: And that might be part though of why this little shorter.
• 19:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I do remember that conversation and the battles of it, but I mean, this is, and this is what's crazy great about the show, the evolution, right?
• 19:33
[SPEAKER_02]: And I hope this is a lesson for people who are listening to us who want to start a show.
• 19:37
[SPEAKER_02]: Let me tell you something, everybody wants to start a fucking show.
• 19:40
  [SPEAKER_02]: everybody does.
• 19:41
  [SPEAKER_02]: But it's about consistency.
• 19:43
[SPEAKER_02]: And then it's about navigating that with, if you have a partner, how are you going to navigate that?
• 19:48
[SPEAKER_02]: Because you evolve and change, you know, Steve, you said, what was going on for you in 2016?
• 19:53
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I can tell you, I think we both started the show from a place of damage.
• 19:58
  [SPEAKER_02]: Both of us.
• 19:58
[SPEAKER_02]: and unfulfilled situations, because I was coming out of a horrible five-year relationship that had just ended the previous year, and I was still wrecked from it because of the self-esteem and self-confidence issues that that person absolutely decimated me with, and I had almost taken my life that November, so that in 2016, November 2016.
• 20:20
  [SPEAKER_02]: And so like
• 20:21
[SPEAKER_02]: But we started the show a little bit earlier in 2016 and we're kind of figuring out, so like that's the thing we were both in a place that we were a bit frustrated a bit fractured and here were movies.
• 20:33
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, and so that's the thing that could that can heal us, you and I and and I think so many people, it's amazing about so many people coming to our show.
• 20:51
[SPEAKER_02]: they love movies as much as we love movies and so, you know, so many people say things like our show saved them during a tough time in their lives.
• 20:59
[SPEAKER_02]: I think we can both say that our show saved us at a tough time in our lives separately in how we created it, you know.
• 21:07
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, particularly in the early days, because I, you know, I could literally spend the next 20 minutes telling you all the almost in my career, you know, I sold a company to a series to a comic book company that got bought out and canceled my comic, you know, I sold a green lantern core quarterly story that's my first professional writing job and then they turned how Jordan into a bad guy and canceled my story.
• 21:31
[SPEAKER_04]: this has happened to me over and over and over and over again.
• 21:34
[SPEAKER_04]: And so the ability to because so much of the time in our industry, you're asking the gatekeepers, you're just begging, please, please let me do this thing.
• 21:45
[SPEAKER_04]: And then you run through all of these hoops and then maybe the thing never happens or you're on the cutting room floor or whatever it is.
• 21:52
[SPEAKER_04]: And when we started, it was an amazing thing for me when we, from the very beginning, we started doing the podcast,
• 21:59
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it goes bad and I would wake up the next morning and people hit listen to it.
• 22:05
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I cannot and it was and the the show was exactly the show we wanted to make.
• 22:10
[SPEAKER_04]: You know what I mean?
• 22:11
[SPEAKER_04]: We had nobody else messing around with this.
• 22:13
[SPEAKER_04]: We didn't have any gatekeepers to please.
• 22:15
[SPEAKER_04]: We made the thing that we want.
• 22:17
[SPEAKER_04]: We put it out and just to hear that people were listening.
• 22:21
[SPEAKER_04]: It was a huge healing thing for me because I was, as I said, I was not in the best place, you know, I was like, you know, and I'm sure I know you've done this many, many times.
• 22:30
[SPEAKER_04]: We're like, how long am I going to keep banging my head against this fucking wall?
• 22:34
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah, you're like, you know, except that the universe is telling me to just stop and go, you know, get a job in an office or something.
• 22:41
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 22:42
[SPEAKER_02]: And if the cinephiles, I don't know what would have happened if the cinephiles hadn't happened.
• 22:46
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think, some confidence back, you know?
• 22:48
  [SPEAKER_02]: Sorry.
• 22:49
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 22:49
[SPEAKER_02]: I owe me the culture of sorry Steve.
• 22:51
[SPEAKER_02]: And I agree with you because the same thing happened.
• 22:54
[SPEAKER_02]: When I took the job at Collider,
• 22:57
[SPEAKER_02]: quite a few people told me that I should end the cinephiles and where they were like, you know, really like, oh, yes, I've never told you this, but yes, quite a few people were like, you need to focus on this.
• 23:06
[SPEAKER_02]: This needs to be your focus.
• 23:08
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what you're getting out of doing that show, but this needs to be your focus, the collider stuff.
• 23:13
[SPEAKER_02]: And I appreciated where they were coming from because they were just so committed to collider, right, to being an entertainment
• 23:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Irons in the fire, and you know me as we've talked about many times, I have interest in numerous areas.
• 23:27
[SPEAKER_02]: So to shut down one area for me is like cutting off a limb, I need it.
• 23:32
[SPEAKER_02]: I had a wrestling show as well.
• 23:34
[SPEAKER_02]: I had a fucking job done show and I, and I was hosting stuff on the flash and walking dead.
• 23:39
[SPEAKER_02]: And then I got the job a collider, and yeah, a few people were like, why are you still doing this show?
• 23:43
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, what's it bringing you?
• 23:44
  [SPEAKER_02]: What's going on?
• 23:45
[SPEAKER_02]: And this was before we were able to like make, you know, get the Patreon going and get the consistency of,
• 23:51
[SPEAKER_02]: of the cash of it all, but what I was getting was something you can't put into money, which was a wealth of being able to speak about these movies with a friend and go bone deep on what that bone deep, but just talk about them and discuss the concepts and the velocity.
• 24:06
  [SPEAKER_02]: So my,
• 24:08
[SPEAKER_02]: Intelligence, my brain, my intellectualism was getting satisfied or fed by being able to do that, because there's only so many Marvel conversations before you slam your head into a fucking wall that just start to repeat.
• 24:21
[SPEAKER_02]: But every week was a new movie at the time, every week was a new movie that we could do.
• 24:26
[SPEAKER_02]: So I kept doing the show.
• 24:28
[SPEAKER_02]: And yes, as you said before, there were growing pains with you and I, we were changing, things were going on in your life, things were going to
• 24:35
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, so we're banging our heads against the wall.
• 24:38
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a times trying to get this thing to work.
• 24:40
[SPEAKER_02]: And then, you know, but I'm so glad I stuck with the show because when those assholes dumped me, if this show, again, kept me alive and saved me through COVID because I didn't know what I was gonna do after Collider dumped me in 2020.
• 24:56
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know what I was gonna put, but I had this show.
• 24:58
[SPEAKER_02]: had the consistency of this show and I'll be honest with you, I had the financial assistance of this show from the Patreon, from the ads that I was able to pay my rent until I got my YouTube channel going where it could start bringing in money.
• 25:13
[SPEAKER_02]: So like there's so much that I owe this show that when I started, I didn't know I was going to owe this show both emotionally, financially and spiritually, you know.
• 25:22
  [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah.
• 25:25
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, honestly, it's a similar, I mean, it's not the same thing because I was never at collider and having people try to force me to shut down the show, but like what it gave to me was so strong, like I had, I didn't epiphany when we were at the assistance was at the
• 25:43
[SPEAKER_04]: And I got up on stage and people are asking questions and I had a microphone on my hand and I suddenly went, oh, I like this, like being able to speak in public, yeah, like, you know, I mean, I've always had a lot to say and suddenly the the cinephiles was a place to say it to say things that I thought and because, you know, as a writer most of the time, I'm speaking through other characters.
• 26:06
[SPEAKER_04]: And so I'm not speaking for me, I'm just saying what is this character would say at this moment in a scene, you know, right, where is and one of the cool things about the center files and frankly, probably one of the reasons that it got longer was that we weren't just talking about the movies if we were talking about, you know, the movies where I was talking about parenting.
• 26:25
[SPEAKER_04]: There were movies where we talked about politics, obviously, too.
• 26:28
  [SPEAKER_04]: Many people shagrin.
• 26:30
[SPEAKER_04]: There's movies where we're talking about the environment.
• 26:32
[SPEAKER_04]: There's movies where we're talking about sex.
• 26:34
[SPEAKER_04]: There are movies where we're talking about.
• 26:35
[SPEAKER_04]: And so what it, the cinephiles became a conduit to open up all sorts of discussions.
• 26:41
[SPEAKER_04]: And to me, some of those are the best things we've ever done.
• 26:43
[SPEAKER_04]: Because it isn't just, you know, if we're going to do all the president's men, we've got to talk about the press and the media.
• 26:49
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, if we're doing Oppenheimer is our next film, and Christopher Nolan was thinking this when he made it and made several comments on it, and we're going to talk about it too, which is that he said that today we are facing our own Oppenheimer moment with AI.
• 27:04
[SPEAKER_04]: And that is as real a thing as it can get.
• 27:07
[SPEAKER_04]: And we're not going to talk about Oppenheimer without talking about our world today and the things that we're facing.
• 27:13
[SPEAKER_04]: And that's this incredible opportunity.
• 27:16
[SPEAKER_04]: This NFL says afforded me and I know for you, too.
• 27:19
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, because we've grown, you know, we were in our mid 40s, are not who we are now, or in our 40s, right?
• 27:27
[SPEAKER_02]: There are not who we are now.
• 27:28
  [SPEAKER_02]: And
• 27:30
[SPEAKER_02]: what how we I've moved three times since we started the show.
• 27:34
[SPEAKER_02]: I've had a I found a very amazing relationship and I'd started the show from a pretty fractured place with my heart.
• 27:41
[SPEAKER_02]: So to have that happen, I went through some intense therapy and come out the other side.
• 27:45
[SPEAKER_02]: And I know you and I have had some great discussions through the 10 years about some of the things that are going on in my life and some of the advice and counsel and shared experiences that I've
• 27:56
[SPEAKER_02]: kind of felt heard by when you've shared some of your stuff with me.
• 27:59
[SPEAKER_02]: So there's more than just the cine files, there was also the Steven John relationship that has come along over the last 10 years as well.
• 28:08
[SPEAKER_02]: And the fact that we spend this much time making sure and in our relationship is developed as well and our working relationship is really developed as well too.
• 28:16
[SPEAKER_02]: where we're, you know, listening to each other a bit more, a lot more, and being more understanding, consider the time and figuring out how we're going to do this.
• 28:23
[SPEAKER_02]: And all these kinds of things are so important.
• 28:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And so, you know, when people compliment the show, where people have really nice things to say about the show, just know that we also get a lot back from doing the show.
• 28:34
[SPEAKER_02]: And also, there's something really,
• 28:37
[SPEAKER_02]: Satisfying, if I can speak for Steven correctly, if I'm wrong, but there's something satisfying going back to what you said just a few minutes ago in knowing that people want to listen to us and what we have to say about movies because as Steve said, you know,
• 28:52
[SPEAKER_02]: having multiple opportunities to achieve something and not having it work out can be quite hard.
• 28:58
[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, there are some really petty people in the YouTube space nowadays who go, oh, Roca, you're just a failed actor.
• 29:05
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, they try to come after you for that.
• 29:06
[SPEAKER_02]: Never mind that they're, have done nothing with their lives, but they try to attack you from that place.
• 29:11
[SPEAKER_02]: and try to hurt you with that place, but you don't understand if I hadn't failed as an actor, I wouldn't have so much that I have now that brings me so much joy because I clearly wasn't happy doing acting all the time and being on those sets and going to those auditions.
• 29:25
[SPEAKER_02]: I just felt myself getting burnt out.
• 29:27
[SPEAKER_02]: And so like you said, I don't know where I be if I didn't have.
• 29:30
[SPEAKER_02]: The cinephiles along with a couple of other shows and then eventually my channel in order to kind of get me into the place that I need to get to to be where I'm at today.
• 29:39
[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, that's I mean, honestly, well none of it was fun.
• 29:45
[SPEAKER_04]: failure after failure after failure turned me from a fairly arrogant and not necessarily that sensitive person, like I thought I knew it all, you know, I thought I thought I thought I would figure it out and getting the shit kicked out of me over and over again.
• 30:04
[SPEAKER_04]: made me a better writer.
• 30:05
[SPEAKER_04]: I think it made me a better friend.
• 30:07
[SPEAKER_04]: I think it made me much more humble.
• 30:09
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think it, you know, much of the philosophy and my way of approaching things on the podcast.
• 30:15
  [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
• 30:16
[SPEAKER_04]: I could never have done without all of those failures, you know.
• 30:20
  [SPEAKER_04]: Right.
• 30:20
[SPEAKER_02]: And they were central to it.
• 30:22
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I agree.
• 30:23
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that comes through in our conversations about movies, which is what a lot of the people who listen to our show tell us.
• 30:28
[SPEAKER_02]: that like the big reason they listen, even the films they've never seen, they just enjoy our camaraderie, our exchanges, our back and forth, and the humanity of our experiences that we bring to the show.
• 30:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, there's the occasional listener who is like, why are you guys always talking about your lives?
• 30:46
[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, that's the minority in jealousy and just get out of here.
• 30:51
[SPEAKER_02]: almost everyone else enjoys the way we approach it and give of ourselves to be vulnerable in speaking about these movies and how it affects us and we've got an emotional talking about these movies.
• 31:03
[SPEAKER_02]: I feel this is a very visceral podcast and interactive podcast in a lot of ways where we take people kind of like Tom Cruise in the jet.
• 31:14
[SPEAKER_02]: We take you inside the jet with us as we
• 31:19
[SPEAKER_04]: That's a good thing, you know, two quick things.
• 31:23
[SPEAKER_04]: One is that, you know, as I said for the beginning is that your openness and willingness to, you know, put yourself out there emotionally was like to me that was the bar was I was like, okay, that's what John's doing.
• 31:37
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm a very private person, as you know, yeah, these are emotional, you know, and so if I'm not.
• 31:43
[SPEAKER_04]: tapping into the emotion of the film, then I'm actually doing the movie a disservice.
• 31:49
[SPEAKER_04]: And so I kind of had to learn and not that it was always on purpose, because sometimes I just start sobbing.
• 31:55
[SPEAKER_04]: I remember at the end of Chariots of Fire.
• 31:58
[SPEAKER_04]: The amount of crying, because that, you know, it's total story about my dad when he was dying and the amount of it.
• 32:03
[SPEAKER_04]: tears were edited down because it went on so long, which is the other thing is like I know some people think this digression is too long or that thing we spent too much time to or whatever.
• 32:15
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a constant balancing act and you would when recording the episodes are having the conversation of like, well, maybe this won't go in and a lot of stuff doesn't go in.
• 32:24
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, there are times there have been several times recently where I've gone on some sort of
• 32:33
[SPEAKER_04]: That's the whole thing and got the whole thing out, you know?
• 32:36
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but I mean, the fact that we create space for each other to have those tangents and what have you, and we don't know how many of those tangents really affect people.
• 32:45
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's just part of us being doing the show.
• 32:48
[SPEAKER_02]: So no matter how much a small minority of people want to eliminate that from the show, it'll never be removed from the show because it's connected to how we look at movies.
• 32:57
[SPEAKER_02]: And I would argue that,
• 32:59
[SPEAKER_02]: The fact that you and I, you know, endured failures for lack of a better term or lessons, I guess is a better more healthier term.
• 33:08
[SPEAKER_02]: As we've done the thing, I think we bring that to the show, which separates us from so many other people who do these shows, because most of the people who do these movie shows are successful people as actors or writers, I think of how they made it, you know, that show that's very similar to our show.
• 33:23
[SPEAKER_02]: And they, they're all like successfully working in all this kind of shit.
• 33:27
[SPEAKER_02]: I like it that we come from
• 33:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: the people.
• 33:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: We speak like people.
• 33:31
[SPEAKER_02]: With experience, of course, having been in the business, but we come from the people and we speak about these movies in that way.
• 33:37
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's that's important in how we break it down in it.
• 33:40
[SPEAKER_02]: And there's a preciousness with which we treat just about every one of the movies we talk about, which I think comes through, you know, and keeping this alive, the love of movies alive.
• 33:51
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's pause our 10th anniversary celebration Steve for a moment to talk about another film that may become a modern classic for us to discuss down the road here on the show.
• 34:01
  [SPEAKER_02]: It's called the invites from 824.
• 34:03
[SPEAKER_02]: It's out in select theaters.
• 34:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Now I know Shannon McClung recently saw it and enjoyed it.
• 34:08
[SPEAKER_02]: And it goes nationwide on July 10th, which is about five days away from one recording this show.
• 34:13
[SPEAKER_02]: It starts Seth Rogan, Penelope Cruz and Olivia Wilde, who is back in the director's chair
• 34:19
[SPEAKER_02]: taking a little bit of a break there after her last movie.
• 34:23
[SPEAKER_04]: I am so excited to see this film.
• 34:25
  [SPEAKER_04]: I got it.
• 34:26
[SPEAKER_04]: I am both excited and have a lot of trepidations because the setting matter, whatever this invite is, between these two couples, I think there's some hints in the trailer about where we're going and
• 34:38
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm just going to say that I have been in some situations, I'm no longer married, but when I was married, and we would be having an evening with a first couple, and it's going really well, and everyone's talking and laughing, and then some, one of the other couples says a thing, and it's like, wait, what does that mean?
• 34:56
[SPEAKER_04]: It's been more than once that Karen and I have walked away privately and said, is some going on here?
• 35:02
[SPEAKER_04]: like is there a thing?
• 35:04
[SPEAKER_04]: No, it was never taken to a conclusion.
• 35:07
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm still to this day.
• 35:08
[SPEAKER_04]: There's one of them where I'm like, I kind of feel like an offer was in the air, but I'm not 100% sure.
• 35:15
[SPEAKER_04]: And I got to say, like the Seth Rogan character into this, in this way, I relate to so much.
• 35:21
[SPEAKER_04]: So yes, the invite, I will be going to see it in a couple of days.
• 35:25
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
• 35:26
[SPEAKER_02]: It blends sharp comedy with emotional honesty and a touch of the unexpected apparently, according to the log line here.
• 35:33
[SPEAKER_02]: It creates an experience that feels both entertaining and revealing and art some of those the greatest movies because we talk about those greatest movies here on the show.
• 35:41
[SPEAKER_02]: Go see the invite that's playing in your area or wait for it to come out on July 10th and go see it and enjoy it.
• 35:48
[SPEAKER_02]: And this Steve said, maybe you're one of those couples.
• 35:50
[SPEAKER_02]: that has had an experience like this.
• 35:52
[SPEAKER_02]: So it'll speak to you when you go and see it.
• 35:55
[SPEAKER_02]: I have fortunately never had to encounter anything like this because I would feel super awkward and leave the room immediately.
• 36:01
[SPEAKER_02]: But it'll be fun to see what Olivia wild does with this too.
• 36:05
[SPEAKER_02]: She's been doing the press rounds.
• 36:06
[SPEAKER_02]: And I like the fact that she shot this thing on film and paid for it herself, which I think is a positive sign to show how much she loves films as well.
• 36:15
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, let's get back to the show, but we should also talk about some announcements right Steve, we should make some announcements here as we're hitting the kind of midway point of the show.
• 36:22
[SPEAKER_02]: What do you God for us, my man?
• 36:24
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, the big one is that we're actually running a sale on Patreon.
• 36:30
[SPEAKER_04]: That's patreon.com slash the cinephiles and where we did our sale last time, I foolishly announced that the sale price, which is 20% off, was available for both the
• 36:44
[SPEAKER_04]: That has been corrected this time.
• 36:46
[SPEAKER_04]: So this time, whether you want to sign up for a monthly membership and get a discount off that first month or an annual membership and it get a discount on the whole year now is the time.
• 36:57
[SPEAKER_04]: And in particular, and now is the definitely the time.
• 37:01
[SPEAKER_04]: And the all you need to do is go to patreon.com slash the cinephiles and you use the code three, three,
• 37:08
  [SPEAKER_04]: A is an Apple 777.
• 37:10
  [SPEAKER_04]: That's 3, 3, A is an Apple 777.
• 37:13
[SPEAKER_04]: And you could join at any level.
• 37:15
[SPEAKER_04]: You can even join at the advisory board level, which allows you to have a monthly meeting with us and plant the the future of the cinephiles.
• 37:23
[SPEAKER_04]: And that is a hell of a discount to get 20% off your whole first year on the advisory board for the cinephiles.
• 37:31
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, absolutely.
• 37:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Sign up, everybody, because I mean, we've really enjoyed that aspect of the show, having you all come along and more people supporting us as we create more and more content.
• 37:40
[SPEAKER_02]: And speaking of the future of the show, Steve, this seems like the perfect time to have a reveal that you and I have been having conversations about.
• 37:51
[SPEAKER_02]: another thing to evolve into for the show.
• 37:55
[SPEAKER_02]: But one that Harkin's back to what we were talking about for the first part of this show, which is the earlier episodes, the first couple of years of episodes, when we did smaller episodes, smaller versions of our conversations on episodes on certain movies, rather
• 38:10
[SPEAKER_02]: And so we had our conversations together and then talk with the advisory board.
• 38:17
[SPEAKER_02]: So now we've decided that we are going to do episodes that some episodes that evoke
• 38:24
[SPEAKER_02]: the best of the way we did the episodes back at the beginning, which will be like maybe hour, hour and a half episodes on certain movies because we're not getting, in our minds, we're hearing you all saying you want us to get to more movies, we'd like to do more movies, but we know we can't give every movie the cinephiles treatment, so this is kind of our way to opening the door to doing more movies and doing it in a concentrated amount of time, getting more stuff on the books
• 38:54
[SPEAKER_04]: for you all to enjoy it's so funny because it's really in a way a reversal of our whole the whole first part of this conversation yeah first part of the conversation was how we went from sort of general conversations about movies to going more moment by moment to going very moment by moment expanding and expanding and I think you and I are both really proud of those episodes and love doing thems that way but the disadvantage
• 39:23
[SPEAKER_04]: For episodes, Oppenheimer's going to be, is that what that means is we do fewer movies.
• 39:28
[SPEAKER_04]: And it also means that we'll tend to go to movies like Jaws and Interstellar, that are huge movies that a wide variety of people already know and are super excited to see.
• 39:38
[SPEAKER_04]: And that's great, and we're not going to stop doing it.
• 39:41
[SPEAKER_04]: But what we're not doing as much that we did a lot in the beginning was I just like this movie, and I think it's an interesting film.
• 39:48
  [SPEAKER_04]: And it's not,
• 39:50
[SPEAKER_04]: really going to be a commitment of three weeks of our lives to put get into it, it won't watch a movie.
• 39:57
[SPEAKER_04]: Then we could just talk about it.
• 39:59
[SPEAKER_04]: I could send you a text and say, hey, I just watch this film.
• 40:02
[SPEAKER_04]: We'll jump on talk about it for an hour or two an hour and a half.
• 40:05
[SPEAKER_04]: and not go into all the research, not necessarily go on all the detail, but still have a great conversation of a film, and maybe we'll even be able to introduce some people to some older films, some film noir, some silent movies, some foreign films that we wouldn't be able to get to with the fully with the full cinephiles treatment.
• 40:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, and we're not sure where or like we're not sure how we're going to schedule these in, but we are certainly focused on doing them and figuring that out as we go along.
• 40:35
[SPEAKER_02]: We have a working title, possibly is the first suggested working title, I think is called first cut.
• 40:41
[SPEAKER_02]: Is that, no wait, what was it called?
• 40:42
  [SPEAKER_02]: No, what's a one to one.
• 40:43
[SPEAKER_04]: No, this was, I believe the author of this name is actually listening on the live show.
• 40:55
[SPEAKER_02]: That's what a tentative title of this is called because the Steve said, we're not going to put like a crap ton of all the, you know, clips from the movies, there might be something I'm sure Steve will want to enter something in like you know I can't stop myself.
• 41:11
[SPEAKER_02]: That's fine, but it'll be this talking about the bigger concepts of the movie or the bigger stories about the movie or what appeals to us about the movie It'll be that kind of thing and so we've kind of wanted to do that and now that it's evolved into that this will be a I think a lot of fun And the first movie we are considering doing I don't know if we've officially said we will do this movie, but no, we're doing it
• 41:33
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, we're doing it is because it's world cup season right now we want to do victory or as some of you Europeans like Darren writers in the chat know it as a scape to victory.
• 41:45
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, the soccer film that stars Michael Kane, Sylvester Stallone and Max Boncita and the great pay lay in this movie.
• 41:52
[SPEAKER_02]: Along with the sword and other great football players from that time in from their respective countries like Bobby Moore, who was a World Cup winner from 1966.
• 42:00
[SPEAKER_02]: we will have a conversation about that movie.
• 42:03
[SPEAKER_02]: It is directed by John Houston.
• 42:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, that John Houston, and this will be a great conversation, bro.
• 42:10
[SPEAKER_04]: By the way, I like the, I like the comment we just got that from Ryan Charles leave saying 10 years from now, one takes will be two takes, then three takes.
• 42:25
  [SPEAKER_04]: Probably, probably, for sure.
• 42:29
[SPEAKER_04]: And if this is the same Ryan, thank you, Ryan, for all your incredible Cinephile shirts.
• 42:32
  [SPEAKER_04]: Suggestion.
• 42:33
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
• 42:34
[SPEAKER_04]: You were one of the great suggestures of Cinephile shorts.
• 42:37
[SPEAKER_04]: Something else you can listen to every week.
• 42:39
[SPEAKER_04]: If you join Patreon.com slash the Cinephiles.
• 42:41
  [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
• 42:42
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, please join that.
• 42:43
[SPEAKER_02]: And please send in your suggestions if you're a patron.
• 42:45
[SPEAKER_02]: We want to talk about it.
• 42:47
[SPEAKER_02]: Stephen, I've been coming up with our own ideas because some of the suggestions have really grabbed our fancy fully every time.
• 42:52
[SPEAKER_02]: So please keep sending me a minute if you're a patron.
• 42:54
[SPEAKER_02]: You want to hear us talk about a subject.
• 42:56
  [SPEAKER_02]: Could be any subject?
• 42:57
[SPEAKER_02]: send it in by that email and we will look at it and possibly talk about it down the road.
• 43:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Honestly, they don't come in that they don't come in that often, but I love the non-movie questions.
• 43:09
[SPEAKER_04]: I haven't when people ask us about food or what or cars or some other topic because because I like talking to my friend Sean Roca and I like talking to him about all sorts of things, not just about movies and we never know what comes up in those conversations.
• 43:23
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 43:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, we've got some, how do you want to handle the comments?
• 43:27
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I have some, some photos.
• 43:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: I have some pictures.
• 43:31
[SPEAKER_02]: We put out a bunch, we put out a few questions this week on the Facebook page.
• 43:35
[SPEAKER_02]: And by the way, I had no idea people respond this strongly.
• 43:39
[SPEAKER_02]: I clearly have been dropping the ball on the social media page.
• 43:41
[SPEAKER_02]: So you will see me much more on our Facebook page than you have ever before, leaving comments, leaving questions for you all to answer.
• 43:50
[SPEAKER_02]: Knowing there's such great responses from you guys,
• 43:53
[SPEAKER_02]: I completely underestimated that, and that's on me, so I will now be doing that almost every week, two or three questions concerning the movie or whatever big story has popped up in the world of entertainment to get you all thought.
• 44:04
[SPEAKER_02]: So if you haven't joined our Facebook group, I highly highly recommend you do that as well.
• 44:10
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, how do you want to do this Steve in terms of the comments and stuff?
• 44:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I've got I I pulled some comments from these chats on Facebook.
• 44:18
[SPEAKER_04]: So I'll read one and like I know you've got photos of some and we'll kind of go back and forth in our usual well organized and carefully planned out way.
• 44:27
  [SPEAKER_02]: Very ridiculous.
• 44:28
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's good.
• 44:29
[SPEAKER_04]: So like this is one that came from Riley who said started listening to you guys about two years ago and this podcast changed my life I listened to you daily.
• 44:36
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm a truck driver and your podcast has gotten me through many long nights and thousands of miles Wow, that's something we've heard a lot a lot of people who are like I started this job Where I've not dealing with people and so Steven genre in my ear and that gets me through my night shift it gets me that which is great to hear Bro if we if you're taking us on your truck drive, bro
• 44:58
  [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
• 44:59
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm going to say this right now, because you're listening to this episode, Hawk Dan Horman, Hawk Dan Horman, for us down some lonely highway at three in the morning, if you're listening to us, I appreciate that's crazy.
• 45:11
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, you want to do another one?
• 45:12
[SPEAKER_02]: Or do you want to do another one?
• 45:13
[SPEAKER_04]: Sure, I got another one.
• 45:14
[SPEAKER_04]: This is from Pleasey, who says, the pleasure we get from your podcast is only elevated now that we listen with our Sun Oscar 11 on car trips.
• 45:22
[SPEAKER_04]: when we're all doing house projects together, your podcasts sparked such interesting conversations among the three of us.
• 45:29
  [SPEAKER_04]: I love that.
• 45:31
[SPEAKER_04]: I love that someone's doing with their kid and their kid is interested, which my kid is never listened to an episode of the cinephiles themselves.
• 45:38
  [SPEAKER_04]: Wow, never.
• 45:41
[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe we'll do Jackass someday and he'll listen to it.
• 45:43
  [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
• 45:43
[SPEAKER_02]: I think you said that, because you said something like that one time.
• 45:47
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's great.
• 45:48
[SPEAKER_02]: The fact you ring past on multi-generational.
• 45:51
[SPEAKER_02]: That's kind of crazy to me.
• 45:52
[SPEAKER_02]: That is that's what you do with Star Wars.
• 45:55
[SPEAKER_02]: To do that with our show.
• 45:56
[SPEAKER_02]: That's very kind of people to do that.
• 45:58
[SPEAKER_02]: You got one more before I read some.
• 46:00
  [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I mean, I've got a bunch.
• 46:01
  [SPEAKER_04]: Okay.
• 46:02
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, sure.
• 46:03
  [SPEAKER_04]: I'll read one more.
• 46:04
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, let's see, uh, one of my favorite things is each week's scene where I fall in the discussion will I be camp Steve or camp John, but usually falling with camp Steve is our brain seem to be wired similarly, but it's always fun when I find myself yelling at the radio almost noise in the car listening saying, no, John is so right here.
• 46:24
  [SPEAKER_02]: Wow, that's a reality.
• 46:27
  [SPEAKER_04]: That's cool.
• 46:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's a lot of fun.
• 46:30
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, let's bring up some of these that I did some screen grabs from the Facebook page here.
• 46:37
[SPEAKER_02]: I wanted to start with this one because I think it complements you so strongly to any barbears.
• 46:41
[SPEAKER_02]: And I've listened to your Ken Burns Civil War episodes at least three times.
• 46:45
[SPEAKER_02]: You guys always do an incredible job of analyzing and explaining technical details of productions and provide great insights to the stories themselves, hoping for many more years of great episodes.
• 46:54
[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, Steve, that was, that was one that you agonized over.
• 46:57
[SPEAKER_02]: And when you pitched it to me, I was not sure we could do it.
• 47:01
[SPEAKER_02]: It felt overwhelming to do.
• 47:04
[SPEAKER_02]: a conversation on a documentary, which is essentially already telling you everything you need to know about this object.
• 47:10
[SPEAKER_02]: So I was like, this is very curious, but then because I loved it, the Civil Wars episodes, I was up for it and damn if it wasn't a great idea.
• 47:19
[SPEAKER_02]: And we had a lot of time.
• 47:21
[SPEAKER_04]: I think, I mean, particularly because it was, you know, normally, and even at that time, I think at that time, our episodes were around the length of the thing that we were doing.
• 47:29
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, to, you know, and the civil wars like 11 hours.
• 47:33
[SPEAKER_04]: And so it was really hard to set up, but I actually think,
• 47:37
[SPEAKER_04]: I, that's one of those are two of my favorite episodes.
• 47:39
[SPEAKER_04]: And I feel like everyone's in a while thinks click in a different way.
• 47:42
[SPEAKER_04]: And there's a way, because what's cool, what is so exciting when we finally kind of found the format is going in order and going moment by moment, kind of opens up this discussion in a really specific way.
• 47:57
[SPEAKER_04]: And somehow, mostly by luck, I think,
• 48:00
[SPEAKER_04]: We managed to be able to talk about 11 hour documentary, but still have that feeling of responding to the film.
• 48:07
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I'll tell you in here a little inside baseball for me.
• 48:12
[SPEAKER_04]: Yesterday was the Fourth of July, and I ended up not having any plans.
• 48:17
[SPEAKER_04]: And I finally went, I just want to stay home.
• 48:19
[SPEAKER_04]: And I was having real mixed feelings about the Fourth of July and our 250th anniversary.
• 48:25
[SPEAKER_04]: And sure, where America is today and trying to figure out what I wanted to do.
• 48:30
[SPEAKER_04]: Last night, I watched the first two episodes of the Civil War, and it was the best thing for me to watch.
• 48:36
[SPEAKER_04]: I was crying a lot, because I mostly because of just the incredible beauty of that film, and that's one of the things that moves me the most, but also like, oh yeah, this is America.
• 48:48
[SPEAKER_04]: America is a country in conflict and struggling with its own ideals, and so the Civil War continues to be in a different thing in my life.
• 49:00
[SPEAKER_02]: We're still battling with the after effects of that civil war in our world today as I think of those 250 white nationalists who marched on the capital yesterday with Confederate flags.
• 49:14
[SPEAKER_02]: We still are fighting what we had so I can understand watching that.
• 49:19
  [SPEAKER_02]: documentary last night.
• 49:20
[SPEAKER_02]: If especially if you were in a conflicted place about it, I've totally right appreciate that 100% man.
• 49:26
[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, and it's going to cause we're getting old, man.
• 49:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: We're getting soft.
• 49:30
[SPEAKER_02]: The things like this affect us too.
• 49:31
[SPEAKER_02]: We watch, I mean, I was watching something the other day.
• 49:33
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, why the fuck am I crying?
• 49:35
[SPEAKER_02]: But it's just how we are right now, man, in our world.
• 49:39
[SPEAKER_02]: Aaron Zexas, I have many favorite episodes.
• 49:41
[SPEAKER_02]: I enjoy both of your perspectives on filmmaking.
• 49:43
[SPEAKER_02]: I approach or appreciate emotional these movies can make you as we talked about how you're not afraid to share that with your audience often, cry with movies, and I'm happy you help normalize it for men.
• 49:53
[SPEAKER_02]: I think this is really important, Steve, to hear that as well, because so much of manhood nowadays is like, no, you have to tell me, I remember, I don't show anything, but I'm proud that people listen to us, men listen to us and feel heard by us being emotional about a movie, he's talking about crying during the Civil War or some other thing I saw the other day.
• 50:12
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it means the world, man, to hear people say that.
• 50:16
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it also says something about like for most people, I think, no, that we're not actually watching the movie when we're having our discussions, right?
• 50:24
[SPEAKER_01]: We're just talking through it.
• 50:25
[SPEAKER_04]: And to me, it's, it's a sign of how present the movie is for both of us.
• 50:31
[SPEAKER_04]: as we're going through it, that we will have an emotional response.
• 50:34
[SPEAKER_04]: Because what I think you and I are both doing, I was thinking about this recently, as I think that your background as an actor and mine as a director, part of what you have to do as an actor is to keep an imaginary circumstance emotionally real in your brain.
• 50:49
[SPEAKER_04]: And part of what I have to do as a director is to understand and keep all of it real in my brain in a different way.
• 50:55
[SPEAKER_04]: And that's what allows us to cry, you know,
• 51:00
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, because we're imagining the movie as it's playing, even though it's not actually playing, it's we're talking about it, you know.
• 51:06
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, especially when we're doing 40-year-old version, absolutely like to laugh about in that one for short.
• 51:12
[SPEAKER_02]: It's, it's, yeah, I love this one for Nate.
• 51:15
[SPEAKER_02]: I frequently return to your Christmas episodes year round, especially it's wonderful life in every release.
• 51:21
[SPEAKER_02]: You're closing remarks of the importance of kindness and a big effect on me.
• 51:24
  [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you guys.
• 51:25
[SPEAKER_02]: Hopefully at least 10 more years,
• 51:27
[SPEAKER_02]: of this and then Kevin comes in Kevin Warner and that was NATO and to wrote that when Kevin Warner saying JFK was a masterclass and breaking down a film I'm already obsessed with.
• 51:36
[SPEAKER_02]: You two added wrinkles and layers that I go back and listen again often, cheers.
• 51:42
[SPEAKER_02]: So some great stuff there that people take us with them and then come back and revisit our episodes over and over and over again.
• 51:49
[SPEAKER_02]: I got to be honest, I rarely do that with a podcast.
• 51:52
[SPEAKER_02]: We listen to an episode.
• 51:54
[SPEAKER_02]: So the fact that people find a comfort in our show that they come back and listen to us talk about it's a wonderful life or add something new to a film that they think that they've meticulously studied.
• 52:05
[SPEAKER_02]: It says something really great to me at least when I hear people say that,
• 52:10
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, honestly, the fact that people listen to some of these episodes more than once is that's the highest compliment and then there are only there are a couple of other podcasts that I have listened to episodes more than once, but most of the time no I I heard this great interview with Steven Spielberg and that was great, you know, but I don't go back to listen to that again.
• 52:29
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think that's a real lovely sign, I think.
• 52:33
[SPEAKER_04]: There was one comment on the episodes that I liked, which was from Andrew who said, one of my favorites was Night of the Hunter, an incredible movie, of course, and you're an analysis with this insightful, but my favorite thing was the fact that it was a new movie for both of you.
• 52:47
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think that's the only time that's ever happened on that there've been several times that I had never seen it or you had never seen it, yeah, but this is the only time that both of a not only at both of us never seen it, but it is an important and great film, you know, so being able to jump in with two feet fresh into that film is super exciting.
• 53:07
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, agreed, agreed.
• 53:09
[SPEAKER_04]: Do you want to read another one for I hit a couple more here?
• 53:11
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I will say just in talking about people's favorite episodes, it's seen to me from an entirely non-scientific study that episode that came up more than anything else was back to the future of which Shannon Vocal.
• 53:25
[SPEAKER_04]: came up over and over again.
• 53:27
[SPEAKER_04]: It's one of my favorite episodes too.
• 53:29
  [SPEAKER_04]: I think it's the funniest episode.
• 53:30
[SPEAKER_04]: And in particular, people brought up, which to me is one of the greatest moments in the history of the cinephiles is when you guys broke into the theme songs.
• 53:40
[SPEAKER_04]: It was just one of those, it was one of those, because one of one of the things we're doing, I always think like, you and I are in a band.
• 53:46
[SPEAKER_04]: And we've been through Hamburg.
• 53:49
  [SPEAKER_04]: We played.
• 53:49
  [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not saying we're the beaters,
• 53:52
[SPEAKER_04]: I can watch you and go like oh John's got something to say or John is winding down and I know it's with you it's the same with me and that having Shannon and Vogel in on that day and we were sitting right here in my office and I can remember it is I knew as they were as you were singing these back and forth that if I said gentlemen you would all burst in a song.
• 54:11
[SPEAKER_04]: It was 100% clear that that was what was going to happen and it was one of those perfect moments of recording the show.
• 54:18
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and I wasn't sure we were like, when it started, I'm like, I should read and then just I got swept up was okay, I guess we're going to do this now and it was a lot of fun man, you know, and I think because those songs that song symbolizes something all of us who are singing and going along with it as well, but yeah, those are those organic moments are great.
• 54:37
  [SPEAKER_02]: I mean,
• 54:39
[SPEAKER_02]: I know people didn't mention it too much in the comments, so I'm going to say this and bang the drum for this episode.
• 54:44
[SPEAKER_02]: If you haven't listened to our Christmas vacation episode with Michael Ross, if you want to talk about organic and you want to talk about Steven I dancing like cats on a wire with electricity, that's what it was like with that episode with Mike Ross, because we had no idea what he was going to do, we had no idea what was going to happen, we had no idea what he was going to say.
• 55:04
[SPEAKER_02]: and it was one of the most amazing experiences I ever had recording the show because we usually don't have guests that unsettles or put us on our feet intellectually sometimes for sure, but the way Michael did it which was a very visceral experience was a very unique episode of the show, bro.
• 55:23
[SPEAKER_02]: It's so funny because, you know, obviously I'm a control freak.
• 55:26
  [SPEAKER_04]: I don't think there's like a lot of mystery about that.
• 55:29
[SPEAKER_04]: And part of the cinephiles, like I have my extensive notes, and I'm like, okay, I've really thought about how to structure things where this piece of information should go, where, you know, and of course it never goes that way, and there will be digressions and things all happen, and that's totally great.
• 55:43
[SPEAKER_04]: When Mike Cross comes on, it's just, it's like he's putting out his middle finger to all my prep work in the last possible way.
• 55:53
[SPEAKER_04]: It's just like, okay, this is going to go.
• 55:55
[SPEAKER_04]: We're just going to go and I just have to hold on.
• 55:59
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, a lot is actually the right to go ahead.
• 56:01
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, in movies that that people maybe haven't checked out one of my all time favorites, which it's not one of my favorite movies.
• 56:09
[SPEAKER_04]: It's one of your favorite movies, but it's our two episodes on 1776 and particularly because it's now the day after the fourth of July, I felt that episode we did it.
• 56:20
[SPEAKER_04]: We did a great job in covering the movie.
• 56:22
[SPEAKER_04]: But we also had a great conversation about democracy, about what it means, and I also think that episode is really funny.
• 56:30
[SPEAKER_04]: In particular, I don't know if you remember this, but you were having there was work being done at your apartment.
• 56:35
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
• 56:37
[SPEAKER_04]: It sounded like a jackhammer was coming in.
• 56:39
[SPEAKER_04]: And there was just what section where we kept starting and stopping.
• 56:43
[SPEAKER_04]: And it got funny or in funnier because the jackhammer just kept interrupting.
• 56:47
  [SPEAKER_04]: It was really funny.
• 56:48
[SPEAKER_04]: But I also feel like
• 56:50
[SPEAKER_04]: we got to have a conversation about America that we really, really needed to have.
• 56:54
[SPEAKER_04]: It was, this was in 2020, I think, so it was the middle of George Floyd protests.
• 56:59
[SPEAKER_04]: So it's very much of that moment in time, but it was a really good conversation.
• 57:03
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, as I, as I get older, there's something you said when we had a conversation, whether it was on camera off camera, just something about learning how to not give, like giving way less fucks as we get older.
• 57:18
[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, work in this YouTube job, it is hard to be in a place where you don't give a fuck, because people sometimes are constantly attacking you.
• 57:27
[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, I'm an outspoken person.
• 57:29
[SPEAKER_02]: So, I guess I encourage you to call it upon me.
• 57:34
[SPEAKER_02]: Bring it upon myself, I guess.
• 57:36
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I am not a shy about expressing my opinions.
• 57:39
[SPEAKER_02]: But the political stuff, I've come to a place where I'm starting to become more comfortable talking about it again on our shows because I've tried to avoid it over the last couple of years because we did get some pretty angry comments from people when we come into the Facebook group and leave some toxic and a poor comment about us talking about politics.
• 58:05
  [SPEAKER_02]: And the thing is,
• 58:07
[SPEAKER_02]: I think both of us, I let that manipulate me because both of us come up from a place of like, we just want to go back to a place where we can have what we have on the show, which is conversations from different points of view sometimes, but respecting the other point of view and hearing the other point of view because we're having good faith discussions, not bad faith discussions, not discussion trying to own someone or to try to, you know, make them cry or whatever
• 58:37
[SPEAKER_02]: whatever derogatory term you want to use for either side.
• 58:40
[SPEAKER_02]: It's more having conversations than that stuff.
• 58:41
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and so the reason I bring this up is because there's a comment that someone left, I want to read it, which I think this is it.
• 58:51
[SPEAKER_02]: No, this is it, this is it, right?
• 58:53
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, no, no, where is it?
• 58:54
  [SPEAKER_02]: I guess I don't have it, Steve.
• 58:55
[SPEAKER_02]: No, maybe this is it.
• 58:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, I don't have a free swim brie in the block.
• 58:59
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't have a favorite episode, but I have a favorite moment that occurs regularly and it's when John starts being political, then says he doesn't want to be political, tries to find ways to say political things without being political doesn't do too well and then finally just says to hell with it and says political things anyway, LOL.
• 59:15
[SPEAKER_02]: We're all friends here, and we're all in the same ship with an orange cloud at the helm.
• 59:18
[SPEAKER_02]: We understand it's totally okay, just speak your mind, John.
• 59:21
[SPEAKER_02]: But if I had to pick a favorite though, it was a few good men.
• 59:24
[SPEAKER_02]: So I kind of took that compliment out for a comment out for myself so that I could like remember that.
• 59:32
[SPEAKER_02]: And so I appreciate that Brian because yes, it's not good.
• 59:35
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not that I'm going to turn the show into a political show.
• 59:37
[SPEAKER_02]: But when the moment calls for it in our conversations, I don't think I'm going to be shy anymore by bringing it up.
• 59:43
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm just saying that right now.
• 59:44
  [SPEAKER_04]: So I think that's great.
• 59:46
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, to me, like what I said before is that if the movie is about sports, we're going to talk about sports.
• 59:53
[SPEAKER_04]: If the movie is about schools, we're going to talk about schools.
• 59:56
[SPEAKER_04]: And if the movie touches on our culture and our world and our politics, we're going to talk about that.
• 1:00:02
[SPEAKER_04]: It is the one place we get the most negative and frankly, the nastiest negative comments.
• 1:00:07
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but this is something we take seriously and John and I have had many conversations of are we going to go there or are we not going to go there?
• 1:00:16
[SPEAKER_04]: And sometimes we say some things and then go take that out.
• 1:00:19
[SPEAKER_04]: I know on yeah on JAWS when we did our four episode redo, which I'm really proud of on JAWS.
• 1:00:24
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, I had some very specific things that were political that I wanted to say because I felt that
• 1:00:30
[SPEAKER_04]: The jaws, the scary evil thing was a good metaphor for how our media operates today.
• 1:00:36
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:00:37
[SPEAKER_04]: And in one episode, I think it was the second one.
• 1:00:40
  [SPEAKER_04]: I went too far.
• 1:00:42
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, I got way too much on my high horse.
• 1:00:44
[SPEAKER_04]: It was way too long a digression.
• 1:00:46
[SPEAKER_04]: And you, I think, maybe a little reluctantly, I was sort of feeling it already.
• 1:00:51
[SPEAKER_04]: And then you kind of said, hey, it's great.
• 1:00:53
  [SPEAKER_04]: And you were great.
• 1:00:54
  [SPEAKER_04]: You were respectful.
• 1:00:55
  [SPEAKER_04]: You said, I,
• 1:00:55
[SPEAKER_04]: I want you to say whatever you want to say, but maybe this and then we went back and we re-recorded it in a different way where I didn't hit it as hard.
• 1:01:04
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think it was better, you know, like the, so it's like it's always a balance that we're trying to find of making because the, the big thing is is the show has to be great.
• 1:01:13
[SPEAKER_04]: And if we have too much of the digression or make it too pointedly political, we've actually hurt the show.
• 1:01:20
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, and that and that's we don't want we don't avoid the topics.
• 1:01:23
[SPEAKER_04]: We've dealt with some pretty heavy difficult topics on the show, but we also don't want to make it.
• 1:01:29
[SPEAKER_04]: We want to make it a good show, not just political rant.
• 1:01:33
  [SPEAKER_02]: Right, exactly.
• 1:01:33
[SPEAKER_02]: Why should we ignore a thing because we're afraid of a small minority of people might react when it is absolutely connected to what we're talking about on the show.
• 1:01:43
[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't mean we're going to inject politics.
• 1:01:45
[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to the blonde, but if the film is about politics or the democracy or the world or whatever, and it fits, then it'll come up organically and we'll discuss it.
• 1:01:54
  [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah.
• 1:01:54
[SPEAKER_02]: But also will endeavor to be fair if there's from the other side as well, you know, or from our side rather whatever we are at like something we should point out about that nonsense too, so it that's a good thing as well.
• 1:02:07
[SPEAKER_02]: We also had some comp, do you have another comp, one thing you want to read Steve or we move on to another thing.
• 1:02:13
[SPEAKER_02]: No, no, let's move on.
• 1:02:14
[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, there are people who have chimed in because I also asked what season of.
• 1:02:19
[SPEAKER_02]: the show people would like us to do because we do our seasons of directors and actors and movies and all of that.
• 1:02:25
[SPEAKER_02]: So we've had some suggestions for people I wanted to bring up some some pictures from the Facebook page.
• 1:02:31
[SPEAKER_02]: Here's if you do a season of John Ford, remember to keep the horizon at the bottom or the top.
• 1:02:35
  [SPEAKER_02]: I'm surprised.
• 1:02:36
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, law has done more Western Steven Dowry.
• 1:02:39
[SPEAKER_02]: I do get that question sometimes, but the truth is, man, we go where we go.
• 1:02:43
[SPEAKER_02]: And if a Western pops up and it makes sense for us to do it, we're going to do it.
• 1:02:46
[SPEAKER_02]: And the thing is, that's the searchers is coming up after, I think after Oppenheimer.
• 1:02:52
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's because I randomly saw something about the searchers, then went to CR episode.
• 1:02:57
[SPEAKER_02]: There was only an hour and 15 minutes.
• 1:02:59
[SPEAKER_02]: And I texted Steve, I said, we got to redo this.
• 1:03:02
[SPEAKER_02]: And he was open to it and it was time to do it.
• 1:03:04
[SPEAKER_02]: I never want to force Steve to do anything on the show.
• 1:03:07
[SPEAKER_02]: And I certainly have a lot of interest in numerous movies.
• 1:03:09
[SPEAKER_04]: Westerners is just one of quite a sort.
• 1:03:11
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, it actually started because we got a message through Facebook that someone said something about the searchers and, you know, a few general, and I texted it to you and I said, John, because you had said you wanted to do a Western after Oppenheimer.
• 1:03:24
  [SPEAKER_04]: And I don't remember this one.
• 1:03:25
[SPEAKER_04]: You were talking about big country.
• 1:03:26
[SPEAKER_02]: Big country, big country, big country, big country.
• 1:03:29
[SPEAKER_04]: Right, but that as soon as I sent you the thing about the searchers and you saw that our first one was an hour and whatever it is, you're like in so the searchers is coming up.
• 1:03:38
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's no way.
• 1:03:40
  [SPEAKER_02]: Our 15 is not.
• 1:03:42
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's see, some other seasons, John Warren says, season of West Anderson, I think we all deserve a little whimsy right now for sure.
• 1:03:49
[SPEAKER_02]: Riley Wick comes says, Denieville, a new season of Denieville.
• 1:03:51
[SPEAKER_02]: I think we're getting close to that.
• 1:03:53
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that will be coming for sure.
• 1:03:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Or San Mendes, that's a great suggestion too.
• 1:03:58
[SPEAKER_02]: I just picked up, I don't know why Hamlet.
• 1:04:01
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know why San Mendes is listed for Hamlet.
• 1:04:03
[SPEAKER_02]: San Mendes did not do Hamlet, Namnet.
• 1:04:05
  [SPEAKER_02]: So that's weird.
• 1:04:06
[SPEAKER_02]: Matt Apes is John Ford.
• 1:04:08
  [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man.
• 1:04:09
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, my darling Clementine Manishot Liberty balance both of them my own prisoner of shark island.
• 1:04:13
[SPEAKER_02]: I've never even heard of that has a huge over a classics Can't believe you haven't done Spielberg.
• 1:04:19
[SPEAKER_02]: That seems like a must do and just before just to reiterate that quite a few people commented on Spielberg Spielberg Spielberg and then someone sent us this gift of Spielberg looking at us like we have dropped the ball by not having a season of Spielberg yet so
• 1:04:35
[SPEAKER_04]: These are fair comments there Steve, can I tell you the thought, I don't think I've ever shared this thought I've had with you about Spielberg, but for some reason in my brain, it's just like, just wait till he dies, you're like, oh my god, I don't know why I had that thought, but because, and you know what part of it is, is if we do the season of Spielberg,
• 1:04:54
[SPEAKER_04]: We have to be shinners list and I'm scared of shinners list in the same way.
• 1:05:00
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm even more scared of shinners list than Oppenheimer.
• 1:05:05
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a lot to take on and it's one of, I've only seen it twice.
• 1:05:09
[SPEAKER_04]: The first time completely wrecked me, I forced myself to watch it sometime in the late 90s.
• 1:05:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I have a watch since it is
• 1:05:17
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a really powerful, I mean, it's a great fucking film, but it's just a lot to take on.
• 1:05:23
[SPEAKER_04]: And the thing about Spielberg, I mean, we've already done Raiders, Jaws, Last Crusade, Closen counters, Jurassic Park, like we've already done a lot of Spielberg, and there's still a whole bunch more we could do.
• 1:05:37
  [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
• 1:05:37
[SPEAKER_02]: But, and I'm going to say this.
• 1:05:40
  [SPEAKER_02]: If it scares you.
• 1:05:42
  [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's, it's a good thing.
• 1:05:44
[SPEAKER_02]: Do you know what I'm saying?
• 1:05:44
  [SPEAKER_02]: Like, there's a challenge there.
• 1:05:46
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it scares me too.
• 1:05:48
  [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm, I'm just an honorager.
• 1:05:50
[SPEAKER_02]: It scares me to walk into this movie because we also have to do justice by that movie.
• 1:05:57
[SPEAKER_02]: That's why we felt going, what's why we delayed the godfather's for so long.
• 1:06:01
[SPEAKER_02]: This may surprise some of you all, but we had to feel like we were ready to do them.
• 1:06:06
[SPEAKER_02]: We felt like we were ready to tackle them.
• 1:06:08
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll tell you this,
• 1:06:12
[SPEAKER_02]: record Steve of when, when we tackle these films, we do them justice.
• 1:06:17
[SPEAKER_02]: So I think when the time comes to do a season of Spielberg, which may be the vote people go with, we'll be ready to do Cinders List.
• 1:06:27
[SPEAKER_02]: And I bet after Oppenheimer, I'm going to guess that after Oppenheimer, you might, you might be more inclined or ready to do Cinders List than you were before this process.
• 1:06:37
  [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know that.
• 1:06:38
  [SPEAKER_02]: We'll see.
• 1:06:39
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, definitely I'm glad that you're going to be running the searchers and I get a break because another thing I'm sure you have this man, you know, there are times I've never said, I've never said I want to stop doing the cinephiles.
• 1:06:50
[SPEAKER_04]: I've never had that thought, but I've definitely been burnt out like this.
• 1:06:54
  [SPEAKER_04]: That's one nice.
• 1:06:55
[SPEAKER_04]: I, you know, because it's, you know, you to keep putting out the show at the rate that we put it out.
• 1:07:01
[SPEAKER_04]: It's, all right, every week you got to get up and get started again, you know,
• 1:07:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, and that's why I've been touching base with Steve a lot for the last year about like, where are you at?
• 1:07:10
[SPEAKER_02]: How do you want to do this?
• 1:07:11
[SPEAKER_02]: And we talked about this on the advisory board.
• 1:07:13
[SPEAKER_02]: We've separated out of recording times now, where we're recording an hour and a half for something like that.
• 1:07:18
  [SPEAKER_02]: And sometimes we'll have a conversation.
• 1:07:20
[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes, well, this is no funny.
• 1:07:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes we'll schedule a time to record.
• 1:07:23
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll get on the Zoom or the Riverside.
• 1:07:27
[SPEAKER_02]: And then we start talking about something completely not connected to the show and we'll talk for 45 minutes because we both need to talk about it and then we'll just record a shorter commercial and then we'll record another time and what have you so you know there is this this is this kind of organic thing that happens and trying to put it together, but
• 1:07:46
[SPEAKER_02]: I, you know, I'm, I'm happy to do to lead more shows as I'm getting more more comfortable with it.
• 1:07:51
[SPEAKER_02]: And so that may be something we've explored down down the road.
• 1:07:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, where we give a little bit of, especially with heavy stuff like this, where requires a shit ton of research and stuff.
• 1:08:01
  [SPEAKER_02]: You know, so yeah.
• 1:08:03
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, okay, are there any of the things you want to read?
• 1:08:06
[SPEAKER_02]: There's about a couple more that I, or I wanted to bring in some movies that people want us to do.
• 1:08:11
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if you're, or, oh, no, let's look at the guests.
• 1:08:15
  [SPEAKER_02]: How about this?
• 1:08:15
[SPEAKER_02]: This will be a quicker thing for us to look at.
• 1:08:18
[SPEAKER_02]: Stephen, I know we're getting close to running out of time.
• 1:08:20
[SPEAKER_02]: So you're going to get to these questions as well.
• 1:08:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, but I want to bring up, well, why don't I read?
• 1:08:25
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you're looking for stuff.
• 1:08:26
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, I have a couple of comments on the guests.
• 1:08:29
[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe there's some of the ones that you're going to bring up.
• 1:08:31
[SPEAKER_04]: But, uh, someone wrote, uh, I think this was Scott wrote the Robin Hood episodes with Joe Montana, which is such a delight.
• 1:08:37
[SPEAKER_04]: And I appreciate the guests inside on West Side Story and the Queen.
• 1:08:41
[SPEAKER_04]: And Enzo, who I'm assuming is Enzo the Baker.
• 1:08:44
[SPEAKER_04]: The Baker said West Side Story, listening to the deep dive into the music as well with Melina Govich and David Corneau
• 1:08:51
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 1:08:51
  [SPEAKER_04]: They are fantastic guests.
• 1:08:53
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, one of the changes in the cinephiles, we don't have quite as many guesses we you do.
• 1:08:58
[SPEAKER_04]: But I would love to have both Joe Montana and David and Malena back sometime.
• 1:09:02
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, maybe that could be for the one takes.
• 1:09:07
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, because we're not asking too much of their time.
• 1:09:10
[SPEAKER_02]: And we can just record an hour and 20 or something like that with them about a movie that they love.
• 1:09:15
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, so yeah, very much so.
• 1:09:17
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, this is the one I'm looking to let me take down the graphic again, but yeah, this is from the Facebook page.
• 1:09:23
[SPEAKER_02]: I Luke Allison, I can't get enough of Scott Mance in his Star Trek love, his love for movies and trekking particular.
• 1:09:29
[SPEAKER_02]: Makes me love movies even more.
• 1:09:32
[SPEAKER_02]: And that caused seven replies by the way.
• 1:09:34
[SPEAKER_02]: Kim Courtney said she came here to say that about Mance as well.
• 1:09:38
[SPEAKER_02]: Kimberly Rogers Luke, I will still want to hear Scott and Steve Moore, so hopefully John and maybe Karen talk about
• 1:09:45
[SPEAKER_02]: uh... Luke calices is a guy's a great episode yet there you go got such a great a question Scott who doesn't me to there you go so that's our requisite shout out to Scott man's one of our favorite guests here on the show but people of you know people uh... Brian LeBlanc calling out Michael Vogel saying how much he enjoys him on the show haven't and then calling out carrot saying Karen did a great job on all the presidents men
• 1:10:08
[SPEAKER_02]: as well, Phil, talking about Vogue with Beauty and the Beast and the Star Wars episodes, and then Sasha Pearl Raver getting some love from Phil as well.
• 1:10:15
[SPEAKER_02]: I had one of the most memorable discussions for me personally during chasing Amy episode.
• 1:10:19
[SPEAKER_02]: If you were in the friend zone, get out and then follow it quickly by Anthony Gonzalez.
• 1:10:24
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't remember her name off top of my head, but she was on for chasing Amy.
• 1:10:27
[SPEAKER_02]: So there you go, you know, look.
• 1:10:29
[SPEAKER_04]: I think I could speak for you as well, that we would love to have Sasha back.
• 1:10:34
[SPEAKER_04]: That's a whole collection in Chasiname to my favorite conversations.
• 1:10:37
[SPEAKER_04]: At the Chasiname, we went to places.
• 1:10:42
[SPEAKER_04]: Speaking of, if it's a political movie, we'll talk politics, it's a sports movie, we'll talk sports.
• 1:10:46
[SPEAKER_04]: Chasiname, we talked a whole bunch of stuff and it was so much fun and so funny and I know she's her career seems to be going great and she's been real busy, but I'd love to have her back on the show.
• 1:10:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and again, that may be the way we can do them is to have them back on the show is not ask for a eight hour commitment, but rather an hour a little bit over an hour talking about a movie that could be a lot of fun and yeah I miss Sasha like crazy and I think ours are pundits face misses Sasha like crazy.
• 1:11:16
[SPEAKER_02]: because she was, she was no, no bullshit, but always a sweet coming from a sweet place, even if she was being brutal in her assessment or take down of stuff, but always very open to it all, you know.
• 1:11:28
[SPEAKER_02]: And so, but her making the movies, her writing movies, this changed her entire, you know, approach to it.
• 1:11:34
[SPEAKER_02]: And so it's kind of made it a little more softer.
• 1:11:36
[SPEAKER_02]: So we might not get the Sasha we know, but it'd be really fun.
• 1:11:39
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, we knew, but it really fun to get Sasha as she is now
• 1:11:46
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, let's see, what are the ones that we got?
• 1:11:49
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, is there anything that you want to read to Steve?
• 1:11:51
[SPEAKER_02]: I just wanted to hit some of the guests.
• 1:11:53
[SPEAKER_02]: They brought up a Vogel completely parry got brought up for Jurassic Park.
• 1:11:58
[SPEAKER_02]: Mance a few times as well.
• 1:12:00
[SPEAKER_02]: So those were some of the people that got mentioned here on terms of their favorite guests.
• 1:12:04
[SPEAKER_04]: So, um, before, because I know we talked about, we talked about season of, we talked about, certain mentioned some other episodes that maybe people would be interested.
• 1:12:13
[SPEAKER_04]: I do think of our, what we'll call our lesser known episodes are deep cuts.
• 1:12:18
[SPEAKER_04]: Now, yeah, Zoro the gay blade is still a great, it's not a movie I really like, but I think that was, and I, and I, and I remember before we did it, I got a little nervous about it, and I, and I kind of
• 1:12:31
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and, and you said to me something that was really profound, which is because I was talking, because we did return to the dragon with Bruce Lee and Zorl, the Gay Bay back to back, and I was talking about how important Bruce Lee was to
• 1:12:48
[SPEAKER_04]: The Asian community, and you said, well, that's what Zora the gay blade was to the Latino community.
• 1:12:53
[SPEAKER_04]: Like, this was all there was, and I rethought about the movie.
• 1:12:57
[SPEAKER_04]: That was the night before we recorded, and then because you had made that comment when we were talking on the phone, we had such a great conversation, you know, and so that, and I think this is part of why this idea of one takes, because it'll allow us to have some of those conversations again that we're not having right now.
• 1:13:14
[SPEAKER_02]: you know, yeah, yeah, agreed.
• 1:13:16
[SPEAKER_02]: And it'll break up the show a little bit too, which I think will be fun to explore to see how people react to it.
• 1:13:23
[SPEAKER_02]: And we may bring more people in who are looking at it going, oh, this is only an hour and 15 hour and 10.
• 1:13:27
  [SPEAKER_02]: I can handle that.
• 1:13:29
[SPEAKER_02]: And what have you, you know, I mean, I think of, you know, we did judgment at Nuremberg in 2017.
• 1:13:35
  [SPEAKER_02]: And that was
• 1:13:41
[SPEAKER_02]: Keep, can you imagine us doing neuroburg now?
• 1:13:45
[SPEAKER_02]: That would be such a, such a show.
• 1:13:48
[SPEAKER_02]: So when did we start doing part?
• 1:13:50
[SPEAKER_02]: I guess we started doing parts.
• 1:13:52
[SPEAKER_02]: It citizen king citizen king's the first one.
• 1:13:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Sure, I'm worried about it to Shannon McClung who bought me this for Christmas.
• 1:13:59
[SPEAKER_02]: But yes, citizen king part one, January 12th, 2018, that's when we started to explore the idea of parts.
• 1:14:08
[SPEAKER_04]: So we didn't jump fully into it, but we explored it for sure, but yeah, well, it is funny because if we did citizen king today, it would be four parts, at least five.
• 1:14:20
  [SPEAKER_04]: You're so right.
• 1:14:21
  [SPEAKER_04]: You're so right, man.
• 1:14:23
[SPEAKER_02]: Yep, that was the progression.
• 1:14:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, go ahead, go ahead.
• 1:14:25
[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to say, oh, no, I was going to bring up that we had had that discussion with our advisory board.
• 1:14:31
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, and there was a little audio treat that I heard that John has not.
• 1:14:36
  [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
• 1:14:37
[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, is this what you sent me to play?
• 1:14:39
  [SPEAKER_02]: Is that correct?
• 1:14:40
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
• 1:14:41
  [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
• 1:14:42
  [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, here we go.
• 1:14:43
  [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, the center follows.
• 1:14:44
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 1:14:45
  [SPEAKER_04]: Go ahead.
• 1:14:45
[SPEAKER_04]: So this is we we had our advisory board meeting a couple of days ago, and we were talking about our 10th anniversary and the, you know,
• 1:14:54
[SPEAKER_04]: No lie, joining the cinephiles advisory board is a lot of fun if you really want to be involved and have conversations with us once a month about these films and about the direction of the cinephiles and they said so many great things that I secretly snuck the audio out and edited together about a three minute thing of some of their great comments and John has not heard any of this.
• 1:15:16
  [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, wow.
• 1:15:17
  [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
• 1:15:17
  [SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's, let's play it.
• 1:15:19
  [SPEAKER_02]: It's three minutes and 22 seconds.
• 1:15:21
  [SPEAKER_02]: So sit back relax.
• 1:15:22
  [SPEAKER_02]: We'll be back.
• 1:15:23
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll be back to talk about it after a place here.
• 1:15:25
  [SPEAKER_02]: So here we go.
• 1:15:26
[SPEAKER_03]: My journey starts at the very beginning of Shmo's and watching movie content because that's how I kind of got in there.
• 1:15:34
[SPEAKER_03]: I stumbled onto a collider or Jedi Council, which led me to a collider movie talk, which where I saw John Roka.
• 1:15:40
[SPEAKER_03]: And then I remember like two episodes later.
• 1:15:43
[SPEAKER_03]: They announced that Roka and Matt Nose were going to start a podcast, but also be part of the Schmodown.
• 1:15:51
[SPEAKER_03]: And right then, in that moment, I've been a fan of Roka, day one, writer, die, Roka's my dude.
• 1:15:57
[SPEAKER_03]: And you know that Roka, I've been there through and through.
• 1:16:00
  [SPEAKER_03]: And I remember around 2016, I was 16 at the time.
• 1:16:04
[SPEAKER_03]: And I mean, now's the cine file.
• 1:16:05
[SPEAKER_03]: Then y'all were talking about cine files, I was like, but cine files.
• 1:16:08
[SPEAKER_03]: And I remember listening to the first time I'm like,
• 1:16:13
[SPEAKER_00]: And so I was like looking through all the moves you've done and I saw you guys at Blavroner and I was like, well, Blavroner is one of my favorite movies of all five, and so that was the first one I listened to, and he had mans on there, and it was like, I was just like, yeah, yeah, I'm, I'm totally, cause,
• 1:16:27
[SPEAKER_03]: I've never, ever had a thing speed to me so much like these conversations do because you can deny it all you want, Roca, but as a young man, I've learned a lot from you.
• 1:16:39
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm with that Steve, you've been the same way for me as a young person hearing your stories and stuff like that.
• 1:16:44
[SPEAKER_03]: They mean deeply to me.
• 1:16:46
[SPEAKER_03]: To the point where I've listened to so many episodes, so many times on repeat, even to movies that are not necessarily a big fan of.
• 1:16:54
[SPEAKER_00]: I was never being kind of 21st space, obviously.
• 1:16:57
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, and I didn't watch it in a really long time.
• 1:17:00
[SPEAKER_00]: So I recently decided to revisit it to say, like, well, it might be a change to you like, because I didn't get it.
• 1:17:04
[SPEAKER_00]: And then when I rewatched it recently, I was really like, I was just like, I was watching I'm just like, this is amazing.
• 1:17:10
[SPEAKER_00]: And so as soon as I was done with that, I immediately went back and listened to you guys as review of it from a couple years ago.
• 1:17:16
[SPEAKER_00]: And I really loved it.
• 1:17:20
[SPEAKER_00]: How you guys try to tackle the final like half hour, trying to dissect what happens to Bowman when he goes through the model of.
• 1:17:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, if an episode comes out and I haven't seen the movie, I'm gonna hit play on that episode.
• 1:17:33
[SPEAKER_03]: One of my fair movies of all time, thanks to you guys, and never heard of it, the commitments.
• 1:17:37
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just hands down one of my fairytale cinnophiles episodes because of the details and the music and stuff like that.
• 1:17:43
[SPEAKER_03]: And funny enough, I am getting my master's degree in the music for music business.
• 1:17:49
[SPEAKER_03]: And I don't think I wanna made that pivot and why I love movies if it wasn't for you guys.
• 1:17:54
[SPEAKER_00]: I just love how you guys just be able to like discuss the movie.
• 1:17:58
[SPEAKER_00]: It may look at certain things differently when it comes to movies and other times you guys are in the same page.
• 1:18:02
[SPEAKER_04]: This program that you all created with something that anyone can come in, listen, say their opinion, whether you agree or disagree.
• 1:18:14
  [SPEAKER_04]: And that's it.
• 1:18:15
[SPEAKER_01]: In my opinion, the highest government art gets is when you have seen it, read it, watch it, listen to it.
• 1:18:23
[SPEAKER_01]: that you immediately want to share it with somebody.
• 1:18:26
  [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
• 1:18:27
[SPEAKER_01]: You want them to experience this, too.
• 1:18:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And I recommend the cinnifiles to more people than any other podcast by all large, smart.
• 1:18:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: Same.
• 1:18:37
[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to hear things about them when you never heard before.
• 1:18:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So Steve, John, y'all are making art.
• 1:18:45
[SPEAKER_01]: And we all hear shared with others quite often.
• 1:18:50
  [SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
• 1:18:52
  [SPEAKER_02]: Very humbling stuff, Steve.
• 1:18:54
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it was lovely to have that conversation with them.
• 1:18:57
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, 100%.
• 1:18:59
[SPEAKER_02]: Wow, that's, yeah, it was very, very nice to hear, of course, again, and hear from Judd and Wiley, and everyone who commented on that, a couple of them told out there.
• 1:19:12
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, yeah, what are your reactions all the Anthony you want to say on that?
• 1:19:16
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I spent this morning editing it, so, uh, but like, I mean, what, what, what was so funny was that they all really came back to the same thing and one of the things.
• 1:19:26
[SPEAKER_04]: that you and I never talked about, we never planned on it, but one of the things that people commented on a lot was that we can disagree with each other without being disagreeable.
• 1:19:36
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's where the center pillars of the cinephiles.
• 1:19:40
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, the fact that we had a fight to our lunch and went back and recorded that, so I mean, that's what I mean, you said as well.
• 1:19:46
[SPEAKER_02]: But I mean, Crimson Tide is the one that we can always, the episode we can point out where we really did not agree,
• 1:19:54
[SPEAKER_02]: uh uh on a lot of what was going on in the movie from the same place and it uh you know created a another growing moment where that says a show to have the comment because we felt the tension and so yeah I can't remember if I called you you called it like we we had the comment I think maybe I texted you it was like we need to talk about this and then we talked about I think yeah
• 1:20:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't I honestly think it was so mutual.
• 1:20:18
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:20:18
[SPEAKER_04]: We broke with like I don't remember if you initiated or I initiated, but we knew that we needed to talk after the first episode and we did something on Crimson Tide that we never did.
• 1:20:28
[SPEAKER_04]: We basically, you know, we record the episode night at the episode and then occasionally there are things where all of you see cut out shit of mine where I don't like what I said, but then occasionally I'll send you a thing
• 1:20:44
[SPEAKER_04]: But on Crimson Tide, we did it very differently, which is I went back to the first episode.
• 1:20:49
[SPEAKER_04]: I flagged all the sections that were the most contentious, sent them to you ahead of time.
• 1:20:54
  [SPEAKER_04]: We talked through them.
• 1:20:55
[SPEAKER_04]: Then we talked how we wanted to go forward.
• 1:20:58
[SPEAKER_04]: And we were very cautious in terms of how we navigated.
• 1:21:03
[SPEAKER_04]: We didn't want to take out our disagreement, but we didn't want it to become disagreeable.
• 1:21:13
[SPEAKER_04]: work together in a way we had never had to work together before because it did not been an issue before to make those episodes work.
• 1:21:20
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think I think they do.
• 1:21:21
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, 100% I think they do as well.
• 1:21:24
[SPEAKER_02]: Are there any episodes before we get to the questions we should get to the questions here?
• 1:21:27
[SPEAKER_02]: Is there running out of time?
• 1:21:29
[SPEAKER_02]: Are there any episodes that like you see as the, that we haven't mentioned yet that are the quintessential
• 1:21:41
[SPEAKER_02]: They will give them a really good.
• 1:21:45
[SPEAKER_02]: example of what our show is or any of those issues just are particularly proud of that we haven't mentioned yet here on the show because I mean you're editing you do I mean one of the reasons of the yes the cinephiles is so beloved is the editing you do to bring out the best of our conversations and mirror them or connect them with the clips from the movies that people can enjoy as we're discussing certain topics in the film so are there ones that you're particularly
• 1:22:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I think that doing job redoing JAWS was a weird move because all the ones we had read done up to that point were the hour-long episodes that obviously needed it.
• 1:22:26
[SPEAKER_04]: And JAWS with Eric Rogers, as our guest, was a two-hour plus episode that people really, really loved.
• 1:22:33
[SPEAKER_04]: And so you and I had the conversation like we were really gonna try to redo an episode where we already did it and people liked it.
• 1:22:39
[SPEAKER_04]: and I'm really proud of those episodes.
• 1:22:41
[SPEAKER_04]: I think they came out.
• 1:22:42
[SPEAKER_04]: I think in terms of everything that the cinephiles can do, we did it really well in that one.
• 1:22:48
[SPEAKER_04]: Obviously, field of dreams is a touch sense for a lot of people, and I'm really, really proud of that episode.
• 1:22:55
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the godfather ones, obviously, those ones I felt like we really, but then there are things like cherry to fire, which maybe people don't check out as much.
• 1:23:06
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but I, I'm really, really happy with that one too.
• 1:23:10
[SPEAKER_02]: What about you or the one I think are unforgiving episodes.
• 1:23:14
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh yeah, we're great for us to explore and enjoy it.
• 1:23:18
[SPEAKER_02]: I think we did a great job on heat.
• 1:23:20
[SPEAKER_02]: which, you know, he too is about to start to shoot here to Caprio in Christian Bell or fishley on board for heat too.
• 1:23:28
[SPEAKER_02]: So, but I think, you know, that's something that we thought, I thought our brave heart, I thought we handled that really well, considering how many historical inaccuracies are in brave heart.
• 1:23:37
[SPEAKER_02]: That was like our first, I think that I can remember our first film where we were like, listen, guys, most of the film is bullshit, but not what happened at all.
• 1:23:47
[SPEAKER_02]: We're gonna give you, and this is where Steve perhaps the show so well when it comes to these historical stuff is to get like the fact versus the fiction, but not destroy the fiction, right?
• 1:23:58
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's the line we walk so well when we do this and dive into films like that.
• 1:24:05
[SPEAKER_02]: And I thoroughly enjoy that conversation as well, but I also think our, you know, I think our recent 40-year-old version was a great one.
• 1:24:11
  [SPEAKER_02]: I think sideways.
• 1:24:12
[SPEAKER_02]: was a surprise, and not because I read it, but that was a surprising, the great journey for me.
• 1:24:20
[SPEAKER_02]: And for us, I believe, in that, into that field, you know, I was really surprised.
• 1:24:25
  [SPEAKER_02]: And of course,
• 1:24:28
[SPEAKER_02]: The citizen came to discussion, which I think you and I are kind of maybe working our way back to do it.
• 1:24:33
[SPEAKER_04]: At just at some point, I think we probably will do it again, which is a weird thing because and that's the like even beyond the jaws one it's like, okay, we did a full episode on Orson Wells two episodes on citizen can and then I think we did a commentary track on the whole thing.
• 1:24:49
[SPEAKER_04]: We went deep, but we could go deeper today.
• 1:24:53
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, I definitely think someday in our future that might be coming along.
• 1:24:59
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm proud of the Black Panther episodes we did with Jay and Winston.
• 1:25:03
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we've done Mike and Shannon, but those are people that we've known for a long time.
• 1:25:08
[SPEAKER_02]: I've known Winston and Jay for a little bit.
• 1:25:10
[SPEAKER_02]: And of course, you, uh, uh, yeah, yeah, Black Panther with them.
• 1:25:14
[SPEAKER_02]: And then of course, my brother Andre Gordon, do the right thing.
• 1:25:17
[SPEAKER_02]: That was that we were sympathetic, oh man.
• 1:25:19
  [SPEAKER_02]: We've rarely had a guest
• 1:25:21
[SPEAKER_02]: that we, you know, like we both didn't know already for quite some time, slide in and just absolutely get our show the way Andre did.
• 1:25:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: I know you'd, you'd know, Andre, I'd read it.
• 1:25:32
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you'd read it, but we hadn't, you wouldn't hadn't like extended comfort, but Andre got our show almost immediately and flowed right into it.
• 1:25:39
  [SPEAKER_02]: And it was great.
• 1:25:40
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, it was so much fun doing the show with him.
• 1:25:42
[SPEAKER_04]: Then there's a there's a guess that we have that neither of us knew had never met him has still never met him in person.
• 1:25:49
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, recommended through a publicist that happened sometimes, which is David McKenna, the screenwriter from American History X.
• 1:25:55
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, David came on to do Mississippi burning.
• 1:25:58
[SPEAKER_04]: And from the first minute, it was like, oh, he gets it.
• 1:26:01
[SPEAKER_04]: And it's and then he we did the episodes of Reservoir Dogs with him, which I thought was great.
• 1:26:06
  [SPEAKER_04]: Wow.
• 1:26:07
[SPEAKER_04]: And the thing of what's weird to me, and part of this is from being an editor.
• 1:26:11
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, which is I barely know Sasha Pearl Raver, like I've met her twice when we did episode.
• 1:26:16
[SPEAKER_04]: But because we did those episodes together and because I edited them, I have this, it's a different kind of parasocial relationship.
• 1:26:24
[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like I know like I feel like I know Jay and Winston, even though that, another two people I've never met in person, I've only seen them on a screen and yet there's something very intimate about doing this show
• 1:26:40
[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like I've been through the wars with these people.
• 1:26:43
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:26:43
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 1:26:44
[SPEAKER_02]: And I shout out to Rachel Kushing, our Lawrence.
• 1:26:47
[SPEAKER_02]: Who maybe had discussions worth.
• 1:26:49
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think she did Pat with us as well.
• 1:26:50
  [SPEAKER_04]: No.
• 1:26:51
  [SPEAKER_04]: She only did Lawrence.
• 1:26:53
  [SPEAKER_04]: Oh.
• 1:26:54
[SPEAKER_04]: Pat is just you and me.
• 1:26:55
[SPEAKER_04]: And I remember though, I remember the movie that Rachel said she wanted to come back to and if we ever do it, I'd love to have her back, which is she said the next movie she'd want to do is all about Eve right all about Eve yeah so we should definitely explore that again with Rachel that would be so much fun to bring her back.
• 1:27:13
  [SPEAKER_02]: on to the show.
• 1:27:14
[SPEAKER_02]: I thought the lover's whole conversations with the guy for the master master commander.
• 1:27:19
  [SPEAKER_02]: Those were great.
• 1:27:20
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:27:21
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:27:21
[SPEAKER_04]: One other episode that I absolutely think is one of my all-time favorites and it's partially because we did it in such an odd way.
• 1:27:28
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:27:29
[SPEAKER_04]: The love actually episode is a voguele.
• 1:27:32
[SPEAKER_04]: because because we broke it down and instead of doing it in order, we did it as whatever it is nine short films.
• 1:27:38
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, completely changes the way that and that ended up being a really, really funny episode, a really fun episode, a movie episode, an episode that made you look at that movie and like a what's going on here like what exactly, yeah, yeah, yeah,
• 1:27:55
[SPEAKER_02]: So there's so many great episodes that I have a soft spot for and enjoy and and even doing the Christmas episodes with you.
• 1:28:03
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, why Christmas and holiday in that back to back?
• 1:28:06
[SPEAKER_02]: I have never been the biggest fan of either one of those movies, but like doing them with you, I found the way to re-appreciate them that I hadn't done before and especially briefing counter, which was a common reference for me to do to explore that movie with you through your eyes and see through your eyes and I may not have come around to that level that you and Karen have for that movie, but certainly I appreciate it in a completely
• 1:28:37
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, so yeah, anything should we get to the question.
• 1:28:40
[SPEAKER_02]: Steve, are you ready to get into the questions?
• 1:28:41
[SPEAKER_02]: We're running out of time here.
• 1:28:42
[SPEAKER_02]: So we should do that.
• 1:28:43
[SPEAKER_02]: Is there anything else that looks good for it?
• 1:28:44
  [SPEAKER_02]: Bring up.
• 1:28:45
  [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
• 1:28:46
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, before we do, we should bring up the special that we have going on right now, Steve, for people want to sign up for the center file.
• 1:28:52
  [SPEAKER_02]: So support center files.
• 1:28:53
[SPEAKER_02]: What's going on here, Steve?
• 1:28:55

• 1:32:20
[SPEAKER_02]: I fell in love with the movie.
• 1:32:22
[SPEAKER_02]: And so so much of that I bought Michael Smith's Michael Lewis's book to read to compare to that movie.
• 1:32:28
[SPEAKER_02]: Like I thoroughly enjoy that conversation and no one seems to talk about that one quite as much.
• 1:32:34
[SPEAKER_02]: But I think it was a great conversation.
• 1:32:36
[SPEAKER_02]: And you know echo would Steve said earlier the chair is a fire conversation that just that's a film.

• 1:35:17
[SPEAKER_04]: So, yes, this is definitely things that will happen at some point, it's not on the schedule yet.

  [SPEAKER_04]: That's all I know.
• 1:35:24
[SPEAKER_02]: There's even been talk about us.
• 1:35:26
[SPEAKER_02]: redoing or maybe doing a one take on Rath of Khan.
• 1:35:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: There's been conversation.
• 1:35:31
[SPEAKER_04]: If we, it would not be a one take.
• 1:35:33
[SPEAKER_04]: If we're going because because Rath of Khan is a great conversation, but it would be two or three parts now.
• 1:35:39
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I will not do a one take on Rath of Khan.
• 1:35:43
[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to do it.
• 1:35:44
[SPEAKER_04]: We'll do the whole thing.
• 1:35:47
[SPEAKER_02]: Have we done I feel like we've done the film twice and we're not done the film twice with this third.
• 1:35:52
  [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
• 1:35:52
  [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
• 1:35:53
  [SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
• 1:35:53
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:35:53
  [SPEAKER_04]: Just once.
• 1:35:54
  [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
• 1:35:54
[SPEAKER_02]: KJ says as a fellow parent Steve, have you introduced your son to any interesting movies lately?
• 1:36:00
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, so I'll tell you here.
• 1:36:02
  [SPEAKER_04]: I'll tell you a good story.
• 1:36:03
[SPEAKER_04]: This was from a couple of months ago.
• 1:36:05
[SPEAKER_04]: Um, and Jack's is obviously heard me talk about a lot of movies.
• 1:36:09
[SPEAKER_04]: He has watched some really interesting movies.
• 1:36:11
[SPEAKER_04]: He saw good fellows, which he thought was one of his favorite of all times, where you're halfway through pulp fiction, and we literally stopped after the adrenaline shot to the chest.
• 1:36:21
  [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah.
• 1:36:22
[SPEAKER_04]: And he actually was getting sick and didn't know it.
• 1:36:25
[SPEAKER_04]: And so now he associates a vertigo with pulp fictions.
• 1:36:29
[SPEAKER_04]: So we haven't got back to that.
• 1:36:31
[SPEAKER_04]: But the story I wanted to tell us, he's heard being talk about citizen cane many, many times.
• 1:36:35
  [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah.
• 1:36:36
  [SPEAKER_04]: And
• 1:36:37
[SPEAKER_04]: I had said to him, listen, but any time you want to watch Citizen Kane, I will watch it with you, not expecting that to ever come up.
• 1:36:44
[SPEAKER_04]: And then I'm getting ready for bed.
• 1:36:46
  [SPEAKER_04]: It is 11 30 at night.
• 1:36:48
[SPEAKER_04]: And my son comes downstairs because this happened.
• 1:36:50
[SPEAKER_04]: He gets bored with his screens and his games and his, you know, online relationships.
• 1:36:55
[SPEAKER_04]: And he says, all right, Dad, let's watch Citizen Kane.
• 1:36:58
  [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm out.
• 1:36:59
  [SPEAKER_04]: What?
• 1:37:00
[SPEAKER_04]: And he said, yeah, let's watch it right now.
• 1:37:01
[SPEAKER_04]: And I said, dude, I'm going to bed.
• 1:37:03
  [SPEAKER_04]: Like I'm tired.
• 1:37:04
[SPEAKER_04]: He said, dad, you said anytime I'm wondering what's that is in king, you would watch it with me.
• 1:37:09
[SPEAKER_04]: I want to watch this in king.
• 1:37:10
  [SPEAKER_04]: And I went,
• 1:37:11
  [SPEAKER_04]: I guess we're watching Citizen Kane.
• 1:37:14
[SPEAKER_04]: So we got about halfway through on night one.
• 1:37:17
[SPEAKER_04]: And he was genuinely like he was confused for parts of it.
• 1:37:21
[SPEAKER_04]: And but then he was like, oh, wow.
• 1:37:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Like it definitely hooked him in.
• 1:37:24
[SPEAKER_04]: So we watched about half of it on the first night and then we did finish it up a few days later.
• 1:37:29
[SPEAKER_04]: So the most interesting movie my son is watch recently was Citizen Kane.
• 1:37:34
  [SPEAKER_04]: And he liked it.
• 1:37:35
  [SPEAKER_04]: Good.
• 1:37:36
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's good.
• 1:37:36
[SPEAKER_02]: That's during power of the film.
• 1:37:39
[SPEAKER_02]: Ed was the sonny can't watch live him off to see citizen came for the first time on the big screen what a treat ever timing perfect is what it says first episode Lawrence of radio been a fan since all that's right right that's awesome uh... cages since you guys have similar music tastes have you ever thought about doing a movie soundtrack episode together
• 1:38:02
[SPEAKER_02]: We, we have not discussed that.
• 1:38:04
[SPEAKER_02]: No, I would be one million percent would love to do that.
• 1:38:10
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man, we're adding more content.
• 1:38:12
[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I mean, I would be down to do that because I love movie soundtracks.
• 1:38:16
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 1:38:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and of course, you went, we're home.
• 1:38:20
  [SPEAKER_04]: We're adding more content.
• 1:38:21
[SPEAKER_04]: And then I had ideas that would be hard to execute because I went, well, we have our friends who are the quote unquote scorehors.
• 1:38:28
[SPEAKER_04]: And then I thought, well, how would you approach doing a thing about soundtracks?
• 1:38:31
[SPEAKER_04]: And what would it structure be?
• 1:38:33
[SPEAKER_04]: And how would you do it?
• 1:38:34
[SPEAKER_04]: And then, and oh, God, very difficult in my head.
• 1:38:37
[SPEAKER_04]: But yes, I would love to talk movie soundtracks.
• 1:38:39
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I couldn't do scores to adjusts, but I don't think, but I would definitely do movie soundtracks just as in terms of songs, you know, the tracks, so to speak.
• 1:38:52
[SPEAKER_02]: Green from Austin's request for Doctors of Vago, got to finish that David Leane trilogy with Rachel too.
• 1:38:58
[SPEAKER_02]: Love the Lawrence or maybe one listened to it twice, L.O.L.
• 1:39:01
  [SPEAKER_02]: Wow.
• 1:39:01
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm, yeah, I have not watched Doctors of Vago in a really long time, and I was looking
• 1:39:10
[SPEAKER_04]: It's like not on any the streaming services.
• 1:39:12
  [SPEAKER_04]: There isn't a 4K disc of it.
• 1:39:15
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:39:16
[SPEAKER_04]: This is an important epic that I'm surprised seems to have kind of disappeared from the world.
• 1:39:22
[SPEAKER_04]: And it warms us so big.
• 1:39:24
[SPEAKER_02]: It's so monumental that Javago gets lost in its wake, you know?
• 1:39:28
[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's almost like magnificent amperes.
• 1:39:30
[SPEAKER_02]: It gets lost in the wake of Citizen Kane in a lot of ways.
• 1:39:34
[SPEAKER_02]: But because Javago is amazing, that's my mother's favorite movie.
• 1:39:38
  [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
• 1:39:38
[SPEAKER_02]: I watched that Nazim growing up.
• 1:39:40
  [SPEAKER_02]: Doug developer.
• 1:39:41
[SPEAKER_02]: So it's up, Doug says congrats on 10 years guys.
• 1:39:43
[SPEAKER_02]: My favorite episodes will always be when Steve becomes a history teacher like JFK.
• 1:39:47
[SPEAKER_02]: And John becomes a therapist in ordinary people.
• 1:39:52
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's fair.
• 1:39:52
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's fair.
• 1:39:53
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's another episode.
• 1:39:54
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm very, it was great.
• 1:39:55
  [SPEAKER_02]: Very flat.
• 1:39:56
  [SPEAKER_02]: Ordinary people.
• 1:39:57
  [SPEAKER_02]: I was such a good episode.
• 1:39:59
[SPEAKER_02]: Justin, tone, or sub Justin.
• 1:40:00
[SPEAKER_02]: Congratulations on 10 years, guys.
• 1:40:02
  [SPEAKER_02]: And many more.
• 1:40:02
[SPEAKER_02]: What movie that was said in the chat that I also would love to see you tackle is to live and die in LA.
• 1:40:08
[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe it's you know it honestly it was never the highest one on my list of that era.
• 1:40:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I think like other people but I've watched it in a really long time.
• 1:40:18
[SPEAKER_02]: So I'd like to do manhunter.
• 1:40:20
[SPEAKER_02]: Michael man's manhunter just to kind of comparison to silence and to red dragon for sure.
• 1:40:27
[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, live an I like could be something we do explore.
• 1:40:29
  [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe that's a one take Steve.
• 1:40:31
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's not be a one take.
• 1:40:32
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:40:32
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 1:40:33
  [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
• 1:40:34
[SPEAKER_02]: Wayne says I have so many favorite episodes.
• 1:40:36
[SPEAKER_02]: I do listen to many 12 angry men.
• 1:40:38
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that was a good one.
• 1:40:39
[SPEAKER_02]: Star Trek to close encounters do the right thing.
• 1:40:51
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, looking at that list, I'm kind of like, yeah, we have done some pretty good episodes.
• 1:40:55
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
• 1:40:56
[SPEAKER_02]: This is a good one.
• 1:40:57
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 1:40:58
[SPEAKER_02]: Someone asked in the chat if there's a fourth part for Interstellar.
• 1:41:01
  [SPEAKER_02]: No, we finished it.
• 1:41:02
[SPEAKER_02]: We finished it at the end of the third part.
• 1:41:03
[SPEAKER_02]: There is no fourth part.
• 1:41:06

  [SPEAKER_04]: Here you go.
• 1:41:15
[SPEAKER_04]: Keeping America's fleet running the cinephiles.
• 1:41:19
  [SPEAKER_04]: Amazing.
• 1:41:20
[SPEAKER_02]: Ducks as Charles, CW cooks my favorite guests, love his accent with a laughing face there.
• 1:41:27
[SPEAKER_04]: He does, he does have a fantastic accent.
• 1:41:30
[SPEAKER_04]: It was so shocking to me that he said he would come on the show, because I literally written to him with a question about the British Constitution.
• 1:41:38
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yes.
• 1:41:39
[SPEAKER_04]: And said what we were doing, and I said, well, you want to come on as a guest, he went, sure.
• 1:41:44
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think he was on like two days later.
• 1:41:46
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, he's happened very quickly.
• 1:41:47
  [SPEAKER_02]: It was amazing.
• 1:41:49
[SPEAKER_02]: While he said, soundtrack is my favorite thing, would love more of it from you guys, would love more music films.
• 1:41:54
  [SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
• 1:41:55
  [SPEAKER_02]: Sure, sure.
• 1:41:57
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
• 1:41:57
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, again, the NFL's one takes Wiley, which you named, like, yeah, we could do a lot more.
• 1:42:03
  [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
• 1:42:04
[SPEAKER_02]: We could do a movie soundtrack episode on the one on the one take for sure.
• 1:42:08
[SPEAKER_02]: One one stream live came through here from hot security guard.
• 1:42:11
[SPEAKER_02]: John and Steve, power ballad is my favorite movie this year.
• 1:42:14
  [SPEAKER_02]: So far, so I'm suggesting a John Courtney's NFL's marathon.
• 1:42:18
[SPEAKER_02]: At least do sing street.
• 1:42:20
[SPEAKER_02]: Bake it for 10 years.
• 1:42:21
  [SPEAKER_02]: Best movie podcast online.
• 1:42:25
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's awesome.
• 1:42:26
  [SPEAKER_02]: That's awesome.
• 1:42:27
[SPEAKER_02]: I'd love to do Sing Street.
• 1:42:28
[SPEAKER_02]: That could be a one take.
• 1:42:29
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, fucking love that movie.
• 1:42:30
  [SPEAKER_02]: So absolutely.
• 1:42:31
[SPEAKER_02]: I have not seen it.
• 1:42:32
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 1:42:33
  [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, really?
• 1:42:34
  [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, wow.
• 1:42:34
  [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
• 1:42:34
[SPEAKER_02]: That one, Flora and Son.
• 1:42:36
[SPEAKER_02]: And once, those are all John Carny.
• 1:42:38
  [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
• 1:42:38
[SPEAKER_02]: And this new one, Power Ballet.
• 1:42:40
  [SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, absolutely.
• 1:42:40
[SPEAKER_04]: And once I love one's just, one's just great.
• 1:42:44
  [SPEAKER_04]: Once is great.
• 1:42:45
[SPEAKER_02]: While I say, I also can we get the commitments on Patreon I have to listen to it on Spotify every time with ads.
• 1:42:51
  [SPEAKER_02]: It's not on Patreon.
• 1:42:52
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, shit, I'm so sorry, Wiley.
• 1:42:54
[SPEAKER_04]: If it's not there, it is clearly my screw up, and I will get it up there today.
• 1:42:59
  [SPEAKER_02]: Cool.
• 1:42:59
  [SPEAKER_02]: There you go.
• 1:43:00
  [SPEAKER_02]: Why they got you.
• 1:43:01
  [SPEAKER_02]: You got your request.
• 1:43:02
  [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
• 1:43:03
  [SPEAKER_02]: Steve.
• 1:43:03
[SPEAKER_02]: Those are all the questions.
• 1:43:05
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's wrap it up there.
• 1:43:06
[SPEAKER_02]: I got to jump on another live show in like 10 minutes.
• 1:43:09
  [SPEAKER_02]: You're here.
• 1:43:10
[SPEAKER_02]: And I've done two today now so far.
• 1:43:12
[SPEAKER_02]: This will be my last one coming up.
• 1:43:14
[SPEAKER_02]: Final words final comments final thoughts here as we finish wrap up our 10 year cell.
• 1:43:19
[SPEAKER_02]: We didn't get to everybody's comments or stuff like that, but we.
• 1:43:23
[SPEAKER_02]: We got to as much as we could as such a big show and so much to talk about 10 years, your final thoughts made.
• 1:43:28
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, mostly I'm just honored that everyone has stuck with us this long that they've supported the choices that we've made, that the show is grown in ways that makes me a lot happier.
• 1:43:40
[SPEAKER_04]: I think it makes you more satisfied and that people have continued to enjoy it and been willing to go with us.
• 1:43:45
  [SPEAKER_04]: It's given you.
• 1:43:46
[SPEAKER_04]: And you know what, I'm also really grateful because
• 1:43:51
[SPEAKER_04]: The cinephiles has given me it's been 10 years of school, you know, 10 years of film school learning more about how movies are made, but then also, you know, Last month I was learning about quantum physics and black holes and things like this and now I'm learning about the history of the atomic bomb so every week,
• 1:44:10
[SPEAKER_04]: has pushed me to learn stuff.
• 1:44:13
  [SPEAKER_04]: And that's really cool.
• 1:44:14
[SPEAKER_04]: Like I'm really, really super grateful for that.
• 1:44:16
[SPEAKER_04]: So, so I'm grateful for everybody who's been listening and you know, here's to another 10 years.
• 1:44:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they yeah, I couldn't echo Steve sentiments more.
• 1:44:26
[SPEAKER_02]: I just want to say that this has been such an important show in my life and important experience.
• 1:44:32
[SPEAKER_02]: I would say in my life for so many reasons because I love movies and to have seen where this podcast is gone.
• 1:44:40
[SPEAKER_02]: And you guys know, I've done a few other ones, top 10, cinephiles, I'm sorry, the geek buddies, the hot mic, but this is a special show and unique in the way it's done.
• 1:44:49
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it is the one that resonates the most with the people who
• 1:44:55
[SPEAKER_02]: have come aboard and got to be fans through me and then got to be fans through Steve and then stayed because of how Steve edits the show.
• 1:45:05
[SPEAKER_02]: It's been amazing to see how we've progressed and grown and changed and how the show has blossomed into what it's become.
• 1:45:11
[SPEAKER_02]: And yes, we're both busy, it takes more effort to do the show than I think it ever did before because of our schedules and everything that's going on.
• 1:45:18
[SPEAKER_02]: But we still just fall into our patterns and enjoy the conversations about films.
• 1:45:23
[SPEAKER_02]: And we both are still just kind of like surprising each other all the time on our takes or our points of views or analysis.
• 1:45:30
[SPEAKER_02]: And I always appreciate Steve said, he's learned stuff and him passing the knowledge on as we're doing the shows is always great as well.
• 1:45:41
[SPEAKER_02]: analyst of film because of this show.
• 1:45:43
[SPEAKER_02]: I think I've become a better lover of movies because of this show.
• 1:45:49
[SPEAKER_02]: And that's something that I selfishly take away from myself from this show that I appreciate.
• 1:45:55
[SPEAKER_02]: And I think a better person, honestly, because of so many things we've explored on the show and talked about.
• 1:46:01
[SPEAKER_02]: both on and off camera as well in our lives.
• 1:46:04
[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, that's what I would say about there.
• 1:46:06
[SPEAKER_02]: And thanks to everybody who has come with us, journey, whether you just joined, whether you joined a few years ago, whether you joined the beginning, if you've stuck with this long, we really appreciate it.
• 1:46:16
[SPEAKER_02]: And hopefully for those of you who have found us only recently, you're going back and listening to all our episodes and seeing how the show has changed because we appreciate you all madly.
• 1:46:26
[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks to all of our patrons, thanks to all of our,
• 1:46:29
[SPEAKER_02]: Subscribers, thanks everyone, leave comments and compliments.
• 1:46:32
[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks everybody, leave stream labs and super chats.
• 1:46:34
[SPEAKER_02]: You all mean so much to us.
• 1:46:36
[SPEAKER_02]: And even when you randomly send us messages on Twitter, on Facebook or wherever, it means a lot to both of us.
• 1:46:42
[SPEAKER_02]: And inspires us even more to do the show.
• 1:46:45
  [SPEAKER_02]: I think, you know.
• 1:46:46
[SPEAKER_04]: My, absolutely 100% agree and it came up in the chat and that people were asking again for that discount that's patreon.com slash the cinephiles and the discount you need to enter to get that 20% off either the monthly or the annual fee is three three a as an apple seven seven.
• 1:47:04
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there you go, three, three, eight, seven, seven.
• 1:47:07
[SPEAKER_02]: One last one for Vincent's water downfall, future episode.
• 1:47:10
[SPEAKER_02]: That could be interesting, Steve, a one, two of Cinders List and the downfall.
• 1:47:13
[SPEAKER_02]: I wonder if that would work for us.
• 1:47:16
  [SPEAKER_04]: We got six.
• 1:47:17
  [SPEAKER_02]: We'll see.
• 1:47:19
  [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
• 1:47:19
[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you, everybody, for joining us.
• 1:47:20
  [SPEAKER_02]: We appreciate you all.
• 1:47:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Don't forget to sign up for the page on patreon.com slash the cine files, join it all the multiple tiers.
• 1:47:28
[SPEAKER_02]: Steve was mentioning a couple of times now, the discount.
• 1:47:30
[SPEAKER_02]: Is there anything else we need to mention, Steve, before I wrap up, anything
• 1:47:34
[SPEAKER_04]: I think we've said it all, I think all the important stuff, just like and subscribe or subscribe at your podcast feed, and also you can join to get the ad free versions of the show and the shorts, but not the advisory board and some of the other things through Apple podcast, but Apple podcast doesn't have a sale right now, so that's your choice.
• 1:47:53
  [SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
• 1:47:53
  [SPEAKER_02]: All right.
• 1:47:54
  [SPEAKER_02]: Take care everybody.
• 1:47:55
[SPEAKER_02]: Hope you enjoyed your fourth and we'll talk to you down the road with part one of Oppenheimer coming out next week and take care until then.
• 1:48:03
[SPEAKER_02]: And thank you for a great 10 years and Steve said here's the 10 more peace.
