- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Please welcome Andrew Swift.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I feel like there's pressure to make people laugh on this dude.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: I feel like it'll come out naturally.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I haven't heard that part of an intro before.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Funny guy.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Have you ever thought about doing comedy?
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Uh I I did a couple of gigs years ago.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Well, I was they're little songs, they were terrible little, very inappropriate songs.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Wait, what?
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: You did comedy in the song?
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: A couple of little comedy songs.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: But um, like people don't know this about me.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: But I opened for Chris Franklin, the guy did bloke.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm a bloke, I'm a yobba, and my best mate's name is Robber.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: It's an elite song.
- 1:06SPEAKER_05: I can't.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's great.
- 1:08SPEAKER_05: You do know every other country song, but you don't know that one.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: No, spin-off of uh that song bitch.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: No?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: I'm sure I'm my age.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: But yeah, anyway, but no, I it's funny because people often come up to me after a show and they've gone, if music doesn't work out for you, you should do stand-up.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: I'm like, really?
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: I'm just I'm just being myself and talking shit.
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: So prefer sitting down anyway.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sit-down comedy.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Wait, were these phones released?
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, I've never recorded them.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: You just like performed them.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I just it was just like I had like three stupid little fun.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: But yeah, they um I tried an open mic thing once, but no, it was before I knew how to deliver a story, I think.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: You good?
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: That was wow, the dad jokes getcha.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: I'm such a sucker.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: I'm such a sucker for dad jokes.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Also just when Jock laughs.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I know he's in the next room, but it didn't carry me.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Sorry.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: All good.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: So, Andrew, we would you prefer to call you Swifty?
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: You can call me whatever you like.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Most people call me Swifty.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Swifty?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: I feel like they get confused with like Taylor Swift.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: Um, you can have your own version of Swifties.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you have your.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Well, I used to have t-shirts that say no relation to Taylor.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: They've been around for years, like they've been good fun.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: And the joke when I was introducing myself, uh, like I'd be opening for Knowlesy in 2018 and be like, hi, my name's Andrew Swift.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Is it in no relation to Taylor?
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I get asked all the time, I just shake it off.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: You know, it's that um Oh no, I'm gonna be expecting me.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Um but like I mean, people like the the quickest way I've spoken at a few primary schools and like my mid schools.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my nieces have and have got me to come in and stuff.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And and like there's no way to disappoint a whole school of kids quicker than to say, sorry, I'm not related to Taylor.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: You just see the energy drop out of the group.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: I think hi.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Say you are, like 100%.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, second cousin on my dad's side.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: But we um I accidentally got paid some of her royalties month.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: No way.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:33SPEAKER_03: What happened?
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Uh so this is a couple of years ago.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Uh the good people at APRA who pay our royalties.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, they I got my my statement and I was like, ooh, this is a good one.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: This is juicy.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: I'm like, this seems a little higher than normal.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: What's going on here?
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: So I looked in the back end of it, and I could see that a song that I'd written and released called The Question had got a lot of streaming income.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: And I was like, that's weird because the streaming numbers on that are not high.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: That wasn't a single, it was just and I did the right thing because Apro do such a good job of looking after us.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: I said, Look, send him an email.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: This doesn't seem right, could you please double check?
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And they've gone, they checked and they've gone, oh my god, we are so sorry.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Taylor Swift has a song called Question.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: You've got one called The Question.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: No.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: And we've uh accidentally paid you her just the streaming royalties for a short period of time, and it was like a few grand.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Oh, uh, okay.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And they've gone, look, you know, look, we'll and we sort it out, like I we I earned the money back and stuff.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: And um, but then I would have kept it for sure.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: She wouldn't have missed it.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, I'm sure it chipped in for a couple of drinks at Madison Square Garden recently.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: But uh the uh a couple of months later, I got an email saying, Congratulations, you've been nominated for uh an Apera Award for most played country songs.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I'm like, must be for you and me and a bottle of whiskey, because that's my biggest single that year.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: And I look and it was for the question.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: I was like, no.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I don't suppose you use the same data.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And they sure enough, they had that it had never happened in the history of the awards.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: They had to start it, yeah.
- 5:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, you get your time.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it'll come.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Still better than the recent um Google alerts I've been getting for my name in the media.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Apparently, the landlord for that Desi Freeman guy in Victoria, his name was Andrew Swift.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: So all year I've been getting.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Wait, what's the Desi Freeman?
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Is that the guy who was on the run for ages?
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: Wait, the land the guy that owned the property where it all went down, his name is Andrew Swift.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: What do people message you?
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, people message me going, dude, you're in the paper.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: I'm like, that's not me.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: I'm like, that's not me.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Wait, so what did the landlord have involved in the game?
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I didn't actually look into it, but I was just getting these Google alerts saying, Andrew Swift, Desi Freeman.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like, no, no, no, no, no.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: Do you have Google alerts on your name?
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, just in case anyone's talking shit, bear me at the end.
- 5:57SPEAKER_03: Oh, I like it.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: We would get that, but you know, we don't need it.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: We don't want to know.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: We don't want to know.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: People send us, yeah, it's right.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: I I sometimes get uh alerts for in relation to Taylor Swift because her mum's Andrea Swift.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: No.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: And they misprint it in in articles sometimes as Andrew Swift.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: I've had people message me, randoms from overseas, going, hi, Mrs.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Swift, I love you.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: I would make a much better partner than Travis.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: No.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: Do you go maybe have a look at my profile?
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: I'm very polite about it, like, because I assume that they're not all, you know, not all but yeah.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I I'm very polite about it, but it I will have a laugh about it.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: I'm sure.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:47SPEAKER_02: Did you follow the World Wedding?
- 6:49unknown: No.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: Being Taylor and No, no, I know I don't know.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: I knew I knew who you meant.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: No, I didn't.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: Your second cousin twice removed.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: I know who you meant.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: The invitation got lost in the mail?
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: I had to decline and had to be in Australia.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Too busy dealing with Desi.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: I've got my own wedding to plan, thank you very much.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Sorry, this is my question.
- 7:09SPEAKER_02: Uh I heard that she actually walked down the aisle to her own song.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: Will you be doing the same?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: That's a great question.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: I don't plan on walking down the aisle.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: I plan on waiting to begin.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: But you still have to get to the what's it called?
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: The altar?
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: You still have to get there.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Um I I I haven't uh Maybe you should mix things up.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Maybe I should pick my stand there waiting song.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know what it would be.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: First dance.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: No, we're not, I don't think we would think we're doing a first dance.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: We're doing very non-traditional.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: We're not even running off for photos afterwards either.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: We're just straight to cracking a beer with everyone.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: So I love that.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: What's the have you done much wedding planning?
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Uh we we'd booked their band and then they just cancelled on me.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Oh no.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: Do you need some country DJs?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: We just sold out a couple.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: You know a couple?
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Are we just doing a little like renting a little absolutely fucking not?
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: We've got a wedding booked in March.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Yoxy.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 8:21SPEAKER_05: No, we are we we we need to do more.
- 8:24SPEAKER_05: We're also going non-traditional DJ.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Non-traditional DJs, yeah.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's gonna be so fun.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: Um tell us how did you meet your partner?
- 8:35SPEAKER_01: Because she is an absolute legend.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: She is an absolute legend, she's the best.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Uh we we met because she slid into my DMs.
- 8:45SPEAKER_03: Then what is death?
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: She's your lesson.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: It's a pretty yeah.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: I slide into the DM.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: Nah, it doesn't work every time.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: It really is me.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: I slid into Melly Two Women's DMs the other day.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: We got told he reads all of his DMs for the night on our Instagram that she slid in.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: He didn't look at it.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: She needed a better line.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: I feel like this is where you come in.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: You need to.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he knows who we are.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: We've interviewed him.
- 9:15SPEAKER_02: We still didn't look at it.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: Anyway.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's why I didn't reply.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: What was her?
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, so well, she had a music page at the time.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: She was doing some songwriting and stuff.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: So it was from a music page, and uh we'd we'd spoken previously about music.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: There'd never been anything more than that.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: And um, and then like start of uh January 2020, I think it was, she messaged me and she's like, Oh, next time in the area, she pop in for a couple.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: I thought she wanted to talk about um music and songwriting.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Oh, I was just out that way.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: I said, but let's meet halfway.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: There's a cafe, you know, halfway, let's meet there.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: And I got there and I saw her and I was like, holy crap, um, she's gorgeous.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: Wait, you'd never met her before?
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: I hadn't met her in person yet.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: We just replied to the odd story on the social media.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Uh was there a vibe there?
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: I didn't think so.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: Like, I thought like because I was just being professional and I thought we were talking music.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then I met her and I was like, oh crap, she's gorgeous.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: And then we started talking, and like she's amazing, and we hit it off.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: And then I tried to play it cool, and I was like, I said, Oh, it's just me.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: It was did this turn into a date.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: She goes, Yeah, yeah, I think it's you.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: I didn't know the whole I didn't know the whole time.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Um she had been she'd been out of a relationship for about six months, and she was like, I've never really just had a bit of fun.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: I'm just this guy looks like I can have a bit of fun with him.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: And she went home, freaked out.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Uh she apparently called her mum, she was crying, she goes, He's so nice, like I can't, like, I can't do that.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: And she messaged me and she goes, I'm so sorry, I'm just not ready, I can't see you again.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm not ready to date, I can't see you again.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: I was like, Well, that sucks.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Because I thought, you know.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: And uh three days later, she messaged me, she goes, Hey, do you want to see a movie this week?
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: And she just I think because I said I said something you guys have done.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: No, I better I'm just laughing at it.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: It's so classic.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: This is something that I would do.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: I like say that I don't want something, and then I'm like, actually, I'm not ready yet.
- 11:21SPEAKER_05: Just try me this afternoon.
- 11:24SPEAKER_02: I'm married to the game.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Well, I think what it was, she said that because I respected her boundaries.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: I was like, you know what, that's fine if you're timing's a big part of it.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: If it's not ready, you're not ready.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: Wow, that is a refreshing comment in 2026.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Well, no, it was in 2020.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, maybe we can still be friends, chat music or whatever.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Three days later, message, do you want to go see a movie?
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And uh, and we did, and then we've been together since.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: We met right before the lockdown.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: So we like the lockdowns were great because we I couldn't go away on tour, so I was actually home long enough to really get to know her, and and yeah, here we are.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: We're now what six and a half years later, we've got a mortgage, a baby, and a and a wedding to plan.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: So crazy.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: Congratulations.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: Big wins all around.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: Is she like heavily involved in your music?
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't say heavily involved, she's joined in on a few songwrites, and uh the my song You and Meet a Bottle of Whiskey, she wrote most of that.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Um which we I end up recording.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: She does the backing vocals on a few songs.
- 12:24SPEAKER_00: Uh and then last year we released a single for uh our daughter, Valentine.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: The song's called Oh Valentine, where Simone sings.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: She's got the most beautiful voice.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Like I wish she would do something with it, but um, she won to, but no, no, she's she sees what it takes to be an artist and she goes, I don't want to do that.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: But um, I think she maybe one day she'll end up recording something for herself, but it's yeah, she's she enjoys being creative.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: Um and one day I hope she does something with it.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: Uh like actually record something.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: But in the meantime, yeah, we've written a few songs, but it's funny because the you and me in a bottle of whiskey song ends up being the prequel to the having a baby song because it's all about having a few drinks and having some fun.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Um but even the the next single I've got coming out, she was a co-writer on that, where there was like five of us sitting around the table, and but yeah, she's she's very opinionated on like she like I'll ask your opinion on stuff, and she's the first one to say, No, shouldn't do that.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, you should do that.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: So which is great, because you need someone like that.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Now you talked about co-writers.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you wrote with um Phil Barton.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he is a character.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: You're telling me I drove from Tamworth to Melbourne with that man in one hit, like a 15-year-old drive.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: You would have had the best time.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: He's a hoot.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: I love Phil.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: There's no other way to describe him than a hoot.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: No, I love him.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: He's the best.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: We were just saying the other day, it's been a while since we've written, we've written a lot of songs together.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: Um, he was my first co-write in Nashville.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: And I was yeah, I was terrified.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: And he just I walked out of that right with him, going, Oh, I can do co-writes.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: This is great.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: Like, because he was just made me.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: So you've never done co-writing before?
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Not much, no.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: That was my first Nashville right, which was intimidating.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, did you have both like your first co-write and Nashville?
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: I've done a couple of co-writes with a couple of friends, but nothing like going into a room, got three, four hours to write a song, sort of co-write.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And but he made me feel so comfortable that I walked out of there going, Oh yeah, I can do this.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: This is great.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: But yeah, he's hilarious.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: He's we there was one year, yeah, we drove from Tamworth to Melbourne.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: He's like, Hey man, are you driving back to Melbourne?
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Or I think I want to go visit my mum.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: I was like, Yeah, I am.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: I said, I have to go by Newcastle though to drop people at the airport.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: He goes, Great, can I come?
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: I'm like, Yeah.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: And we ended up doing it in one hit.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: We got home at like one in the morning or something, back to Melbourne.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And uh he's he's just got this energy that doesn't die.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: And it like, which is great when you're although I drove the whole time.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: So when you're on that.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Why didn't he drive?
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm a bit of a driver.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: Like I'm passing the princess?
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Hell yeah.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, very much.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: But I remember we were listening to like my new album at the time a couple of albums ago, and uh, he'd written a few songs, and he's sitting, he's such a hype guy too, because he'd be sitting in the car and he's just like, yeah.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: And then and then the hand, the hand comes up and he's like, I love it.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: He's the greatest, he's the best.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: He's a hype man.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: Do you find it um strange listening to like other people's art like art their their songs?
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: Like if they're like, if you don't like it or like you're not like a huge fan, like if you don't like buff and all, okay, I feel like everyone in the music industry really bops, like they really like if they're like really enjoying a song.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: Like, do you find it like weird if like maybe you're listening to something that you don't love or it's not your style, perhaps?
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Well, look, I mean I try I mean I used to work in a music store, so we listen to a lot of different styles, like a CD store back in the day.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Um so I can listen for more than just a country song.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Like I can I can listen to different influences, and and just because it's not something I would write or listen to doesn't mean I can't see the the art in it and and what someone's put into it.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Um but most of the time I'll listen to someone's song like in private anyway.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah so I can just sit there and go, oh yeah.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: It's always hard when you're listening to someone's music in front of them.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Like I made you guys just do.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, with the I really liked it.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: So I was I was buffered.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I mean, someone else really liked it.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: They've got from the opening note.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was the one.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: It made me laugh a lot.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: I loved it.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh, I forgot.
- 16:37SPEAKER_04: We'll have to put the explicit on this episode now.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: Not for swearing either.
- 16:41SPEAKER_00: But it was a it was a nice audible response.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: I'll be sure to channel that audible response.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Better than a bot, someone going, mmm.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Tell us about the new single.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Well, it'll make you moan.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: Um not safe for work.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: This is a sit-town comedy show.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Um the new single is something different for me.
- 17:13SPEAKER_00: I'm working on a bluegrass album.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: Woo! Yeah!
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: As you know, because I showed you off air, but the first single, 31st of July, it's out.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: Uh it's called Brick by Brick.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: And it's a it's sort of a like a gritty bluegrass, sort of, you know, there's a lot of bluegrass which is beautiful, like Alison Krauss, and even um uh uh, you know, a lot of the the stuff like the wicker sweet is a beautiful, like very polished and very nice, beautiful bluegrass, where I'm like putting a bit of grunt in it.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: I think there's a bit of a bit of moaning.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: A bit of moaning.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: Um but it's called Brick by Brick.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Uh it was actually Simone was one of the co-writers on that one as well, along with Melanie Dyer, Jackson James, and Greta Zilla.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: We were all just sitting around my dining room table one day.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: Greta was actually filming it because she was doing this thing where she was writing a song every week for a whole year, and she would film them all and edit them.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: And she goes, the writing was great, the editing sucked.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Um but it was called Along and Riding Road.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: And uh so it's all she filmed the whole session, which went for hours.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: But it was hilarious.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Uh the song is about like we had a a lot of us in that group, or three of us in that group had a a friend, well, someone we thought we were a good close friend of ours who turned us, lied, and then we gave another chance, and it happened again.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: And so we were feeling a little it was a bit of hurt and frustration.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Like it was a bit of a therapeutic right for us, but I'm stoked with how it's come up.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: And uh there's some incredible players on there, like Tammy from the Steel Drivers, who is my favourite bluegrass band ever.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: She's playing Phil on the album.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: Um did you did she do it?
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Is she from Nashville?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: So did she uh record it in Nashville and then send it to you?
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: See about how it works.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so her husband actually played on my last few albums.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: He's a guitarist, incredible guitarist, plays for Reba, Brooks and Dunn.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 19:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, he's incredible.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: And I reached out to her and I was like, hey, we hadn't planned to write a couple of years ago, then got COVID hit.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: And I reached out, I said, Do I suppose you do session work?
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: She goes, Yeah, yeah, I do.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: And I said, Look, I've got I'm working on this blue guy, so I'm lovely to play on it.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: And she would just send over the tracks.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: We'd send her what we'd done, and she'd send it back.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: And we did that with the bass player as well.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: He's over in in Nashville too.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: So um it's a little bit of a different way to record rather than everyone getting in a room and playing at once.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: But it's been a lot of fun hearing it come together piece by piece.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Or brick by brick.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: What if I hide the name?
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Uh the brick by brick?
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, I mean, uh it's all about this person.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Um it's kind of like what what seeing the cause of their actions and everything everything they built is just coming apart.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: It's all coming together.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: Brick by brick at all, you know.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Um I can't remember the line.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Is there a happy ending?
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Like is it Oh, it's just how the first album Yeah, but it's a sort of a I mean the whole album's not about that.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Like that's just the single.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: The album, so like it's it's been interesting finding the songs for it because there are some songs that I wrote years ago that uh I just haven't found a place on anything I've done in the last few albums.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Um so I was listening to some old demos and I'm like, oh, this would be perfect on this.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: Like I didn't never thought this was gonna see the light of day.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, like I feel like the last couple of albums I've sort of been trying to build up a rockin' festival set and try to complain to the radio what radio wants a little bit with a bit of a rocking sound.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: And I was listening back to my first album, Call Out for the Cavalry, and I was like, oh, I kind of miss writing like this.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: Like even it I mean you could see the gr the evolution over the few albums, but there was a a bit of a rawness to it that I really loved.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I wanted to go back to that.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: And I was like, let's go.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: It's almost like that was a little point like a a an anchor, and we went this way with the commercial side of things that have evolved off that, and now we're going the other way where it's a little more raw.
- 21:22SPEAKER_00: Um, it's all acoustic instruments, there's no drums, it's proper bluegrass stuff.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: So what just made you decide to go down the bluegrass kind of route?
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: Well, I mean, I've always loved it.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: I've I've always been a big fan of it since I came into the I was introduced to it you know in the when I came into the country scene.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: And it was I mean, I've been talking about it for years.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: On my producer for this album is my guitarist.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: So we've had plenty of hours in the car who's listening to me waffle on about how I want to do this, and he's like, Yeah, yeah, that's gonna happen.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: And and then I I messaged him right before Christmas like, Hey man, do you wanna produce this bluegrass album?
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: Let's start it.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: We'll make it a side project.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: We'll just chip away at it whenever we can.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: I'll still do the normal stuff.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: It's like sounds great.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: And we had one day in the studio, I was like, oh no, I'm excited.
- 22:09SPEAKER_00: This is this is the project now.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: This is it.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: So um that's how it sort of came about.
- 22:14SPEAKER_01: You talk about like your um live performances and like thinking about them when you create songs.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Do you think your live performances will change with this new bluegrass?
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Because I feel like there is a sort of different kind of way of performance for a bluegrass versus um it's gonna be interesting because we haven't done it yet.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: Um Do you think about that when you're I have been thinking about what we're gonna do?
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: There's Just Been announced for Groundwater then.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Um Saturday, Sunday.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Uh but I'm you know, I'm thinking about that, and there's another festival, the Ben Classic, that I've been booked for as well.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: I'm like, cool, I'm gonna have at least one, maybe two bluegrass singles out by then.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: How do we fit that into this show?
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: So I think the plan will be around middle, middle of the show, we'll you know, kick the drummer off, or whoever's drumming, you know, if they sing as well, might come forward, jump on some harmonies, and we'll we'll sort of do an acoustic bluegrass-y thing, just yeah, a a a smaller version, won't we?
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Like the huddle.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: That's what I think of when I think of like the bluegrass is like the huddling of all the like instruments and things like that on stage.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: It's like a cool it's super cool, yeah.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, I don't know if we'll be able to do that because it's a different microphone, but yeah, it's a different mic?
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: So it's a it's a I think it's a condenser mic.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: But they're the specific microphones, so you can all it picks up everything.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: These are more straight into them.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: Um, you so they don't pick up a lot of the external noise.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: Whereas these pick up everything.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: So, and you'll notice bluegrass players step forward when it's their time to solo, step back.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: So they control the mix.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: Wait, so it's one microphone for the whole band.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: Wow, that's so cool.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: So which we haven't done that yet.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, so it I'm I will try and incorporate some of it into the current show.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: And then Tamworth next to you, I've actually been booked to perform on the bluegrass holdown night in the park.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Stop it! Yeah, so they got wind of working on a bluegrass album and they've given me a spot, and I'm I'm seeing it as well, so that'll be fun.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, you're a busy man.
- 24:12SPEAKER_01: And coming up next, we have Me, Andrew Swift.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Yours truly.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: The best bluegrass band.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Your new favourite bluegrass artist, Andrew Swift.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, wait, that's me.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: But it's funny because that was announced before I ever even announced that I'm doing anything bluegrass.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: So a few people are like, Bluegrass?
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Andrew Swift, what?
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: That doesn't I'm just MCing.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: No, no, I'm performing.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: It's my new era.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:39SPEAKER_02: Okay, so we also have to bring up something very important.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, the Tamworth Country Music Festival for 2027, we will be hopefully getting you involved.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: You I don't have we got an RSVP from here.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: I RSVP'd immediately.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: The touch footy game, the ladies' love country cup.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Woo!
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Yes! Absolutely.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: You were actually on the white team, which was the winning team last year.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: Talk us through your preparation.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: I shouldn't I shouldn't come back actually.
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Just leave it as one and done.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: We need you.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: We need you.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Are you gonna be doing any preseason training?
- 25:15SPEAKER_02: What are you gonna be doing differently to what you did last year?
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Well, last year I did nothing, so you had a cheer squad last year.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: I did have a cheer squad last year.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, coordinated cheers.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 25:25SPEAKER_00: Sim dressed the Valentine up in the right colours.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: Uh I I think you uh you would have been the only one with the baby mascot.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: It should be a little bit bigger this year.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: It'll be toddler mascot.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: You should get some pom poms.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Sim will probably be all over it.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: I'm sure.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: I was pretty nervous about it last year because I'd never done touch.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Like I was like, I hadn't done any sport for a long time.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: Um Netball was my game, and you guys have me playing Touch Goody.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, you want me to do what in how hot of a week?
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: You'll be pleased to know we have actually changed the time.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: I did hear you guys worded me up.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: Yes, we we're doing a 5 pm.
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: 5 or 6 p.m.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: kickoff.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: And it's gonna be uh extravaganza this next year.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: It was fun.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Well, and that's the thing.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: It was one of those things that after I did it this year, I was like, I'm in.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Let's do it again easy.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: So I've started playing a sport.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I it's not the most uh physical, neither's touch though, but I'm I'm playing pickleball.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: I started playing a sport.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Stop! Everyone's getting into pickleball.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: That's so good.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: I um I dragged Taylor Moss along the other day.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: Um uh Simone.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: She's also RSVP to the touch.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: So this is good preparation, okay?
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: It's just good for reflex.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, hand-eye coordination.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: So I've been playing a little bit for the last couple of months and I'm I'm really enjoying it.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And it's the I mainly did it because it's something that I can just sign up on the day.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: If Valentine's in daycare, I can go, right, I've got a couple hours, I can get out, get some exercise, um, or go late at night.
- 26:57SPEAKER_00: And I dragged Simone along the other week and Taylor Moss.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: We were all at a party at a friend's birthday party, and I said, Oh, we're gonna do pickleball.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: She goes, I'm gonna do pickleball.
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: And Taylor's super enthusiastic about everything.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: I was like, do it, come along.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: And so she did.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: She came and we all played pickleball.
- 27:14SPEAKER_00: And then I saw, you know, she's engaged to Dave from the Wolf Brothers, uh, the drummer.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: I did not know that he was the drummer for the book.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Very, very common knowledge.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: But really, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_01: How did we miss that?
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: Didn't come up enough.
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: You guys need to come to me for the tea.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: It's all right.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but apparently we do.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's it's it's not a secret at all.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: But what other secret tea do you have?
- 27:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Oh, I've got plenty.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: But Dave, Dave, when I saw Dave the following week, he's like, man, she will not shut up about pickleball.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: She's taking me to play this week.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: So it's once you're in, you're in.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: We do you guys do pickleback shots when you finish your I love a pickleback.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: No.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: You know what a pickleback is?
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: Okay, you do a shot of whiskey and then you chase it with a shot of pickle juice.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Like the jar that you get with pickles in it, it's just the sauce that comes in that.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: There's been times I've gone to do a jacks on the way to a weekend away with mates, and I've just gone up to the window.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: I'm like, hey, um, can I get some of the pickle juice you guys have from the pickle?
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: Like, because it all comes in a pickle and pick up why?
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: I'm like, we wouldn't do shots.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: If I had a pickleball centaur, I'd be doing mad.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, pickleback.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: Pickleback shots, pickleball.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: It's too bad.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: Did you just have a stroke?
- 28:27unknown: Yeah.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: It's crazy because the the pickle juice takes the burn of the whiskey away for some reason.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: It's beautiful, isn't it?
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: It shouldn't work, but it does.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, those are that was in my previous days because I don't drink anymore.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: No, well, I haven't had a drink since uh January.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: No way! How you feeling?
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: I've got a one-year-old at home, so I'm still tired.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: Um I feel good.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: I had a it's not my first time having a break.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I had a I had a year off earlier in the year.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: Uh earlier in the year.
- 28:57SPEAKER_00: Um, Midland when we did the C2C festival.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I woke up the next day and I was like, no more.
- 29:08SPEAKER_00: What happened at the Midland party?
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: No, it wasn't at Midland.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: We were we were playing the C2C festival that was here in 2019.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: And we're talking about it.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, the one week to that was very one and only.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: So we played Sydney in Brisbane, um, which was really cool.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Like a stadium festival.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: And uh first day in Sydney, very chill because we had to be up early to fly to Brizzy, and then in Brisbane after we'd all sort of played and Tim McGraw was on stage, um, we'd end up hanging out with the Midland guys and um I think we had a drink with Tim too.
