Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Your Priorities Are Nothing To Feel Guilty About
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hey everybody, Emily Badi here coming in with the last
- 0:22Speaker 1: episode of season fourteen of Hurdles A. It's been a
- 0:27Speaker 1: little bit of an unconventional week for the podcast, large
- 0:30Speaker 1: in part due to the fact that I am all
- 0:34Speaker 1: over the place.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Akaa.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I am in Florence, as I speak about in this
- 0:39Speaker 1: week's marathon recap. I want to say thanks so much
- 0:41Speaker 1: to everyone for so many of your kind words in
- 0:44Speaker 1: response to.
- 0:45Speaker 2: That, your emails, your d ms.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It's so appreciated it and I'm so happy that you
- 0:52Speaker 1: love the recap episode for.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Five Minute Friday this week.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I don't talk about my personal life really ever on
- 0:58Speaker 1: the podcast, very very rarely, and I'm not really going
- 1:03Speaker 1: to talk about it today, but I am going.
- 1:06Speaker 2: To tell you a story about.
- 1:08Speaker 1: What happened yesterday walking around Florence. I wish that the
- 1:11Speaker 1: story was like I met the most beautiful man and
- 1:14Speaker 1: we are now going to travel to the Amalfi Coast
- 1:18Speaker 1: and I'm actually not coming over a month, and no,
- 1:19Speaker 1: that's not what this story is. But every time I'm
- 1:22Speaker 1: in Florence, I book a session with a photographer through
- 1:26Speaker 1: Airbnb Experiences. It's something that I've loved doing over the
- 1:30Speaker 1: last couple of years just to have photos, a snapshot
- 1:34Speaker 1: of this time in my life.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Coming here is so special to me.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And so yesterday I was working with a woman named Tamara,
- 1:44Speaker 1: who was in her mid twenties, and we were walking
- 1:47Speaker 1: around the streets and she asked me. She says, I
- 1:52Speaker 1: absolutely love to talk to people who are from New
- 1:54Speaker 1: York about dating. And I was like, oh, yeah, why
- 1:56Speaker 1: is that? And she's like, well, I'm in this Facebook group.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I died when she told me this.
- 2:00Speaker 2: I'm in this.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Facebook group called are We Dating the Same Guy? And
- 2:05Speaker 1: in it, the stories that women post about their dating
- 2:09Speaker 1: experiences in New York are absolutely ludicrous. And so she's
- 2:13Speaker 1: telling me all about this Facebook group, which I immediately
- 2:15Speaker 1: joined upon getting back to the room, and yeah, it
- 2:18Speaker 1: is some crazy stuff. I can say that not most
- 2:22Speaker 1: of my dating experiences are nothing like what I'm reading
- 2:24Speaker 1: in this group. So God bless women dealing with the
- 2:27Speaker 1: chaos in New York, regardless of whatever your sexual preference is.
- 2:31Speaker 1: But she said to me, you must date so much
- 2:34Speaker 1: in New York. It seems like there's so many options.
- 2:36Speaker 1: There's so many people, like, millions and millions of people.
- 2:39Speaker 1: And I said to her, you know can'tribly. I guess
- 2:42Speaker 1: I don't really, and she asked me why, and I said,
- 2:47Speaker 1: it just hasn't been a priority for me. You know,
- 2:50Speaker 1: over the last few years, I've really made it a
- 2:52Speaker 1: priority to invest in myself, invest in my business, and
- 2:55Speaker 1: that's where my focus has been. And I don't regret it.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I don't regret it at all. I think I'm into
- 3:00Speaker 1: a season where I am really ready to make some
- 3:03Speaker 1: shifts and prioritize dating and that aspect of my personal life.
- 3:08Speaker 1: But in the meantime, this is where I am now,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and I feel truly good with that. I feel as
- 3:16Speaker 1: though many individuals have some kind of thought, opinion, feeling
- 3:22Speaker 1: about a woman that is in her mid thirties and single,
- 3:25Speaker 1: and in New York it's common, but in general, I
- 3:28Speaker 1: would say it's less common maybe, And I cannot let
- 3:33Speaker 1: and will not let those people make me feel any
- 3:36Speaker 1: kind of way about the choices that I have made
- 3:37Speaker 1: in my life. Granted, that can be easier said than done,
- 3:42Speaker 1: but I know, having had so many of these conversations
- 3:45Speaker 1: with other women, both single and not single, that it's
- 3:50Speaker 1: a common feeling and it's a valid feeling, and all
- 3:55Speaker 1: we can do is be honest.
- 3:57Speaker 2: With ourselfs about where we are at can be, and
- 4:00Speaker 2: I can be this is where I'm at.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I am confident in the decisions that I've made, what
- 4:05Speaker 1: I have chosen to prioritize, and where I am at
- 4:07Speaker 1: in my life. And I also wouldn't mind having a
- 4:11Speaker 1: long term partner. It's both, and so I give myself
- 4:15Speaker 1: the grace in the season to be where I am
- 4:18Speaker 1: and know that what is meant to be in my
- 4:20Speaker 1: life is what it is meant to be in my life.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And I share this with you.
- 4:24Speaker 1: But I also kind of shared these sentiments with Tamra
- 4:27Speaker 1: as we walked around Florence, and she she think me
- 4:30Speaker 1: were my perspective and that was kind of special. It
- 4:33Speaker 1: was kind of special to see the light bulbs go
- 4:36Speaker 1: off for her and know that I was also staying
- 4:39Speaker 1: really true to myself and not allowing someone else's opinion
- 4:42Speaker 1: or thought, albeit unintentionally for sure, to make me feel
- 4:46Speaker 1: any sort of way, because I get to decide how
- 4:49Speaker 1: I feel. I really can't wait to see those photos.
- 4:53Speaker 1: My prompt for you this week, what are your priorities
- 4:57Speaker 1: right now? What are you focused on? What's important to you?
- 5:01Speaker 1: My prompt for you this week? What is important to you?
- 5:05Speaker 1: What are your priorities? And now a listener question.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Hi, Emily, this is Ro's congratulations on the Berlin Marathon.
- 5:14Speaker 3: I can't wait to hear all about it. I had
- 5:17Speaker 3: a question for you. I decided to listen to your
- 5:20Speaker 3: twenty twenty two New York City Marathon review since I'm
- 5:23Speaker 3: running the New York City Marathon for the first time
- 5:26Speaker 3: this year, and I noticed that in your podcast you
- 5:30Speaker 3: mentioned that you decided to run that race without any music.
- 5:34Speaker 3: I have yet to do that. I've done most of
- 5:36Speaker 3: my runs with music, but I wanted to know what
- 5:39Speaker 3: was your decision behind it. You did you do this
- 5:42Speaker 3: race without any music? What was your experience, how do
- 5:46Speaker 3: you get used to it? How do you decide when
- 5:49Speaker 3: you want to listen to music or not. I'd love
- 5:51Speaker 3: to get your feedback.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Thanks, you know I ran.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I want to say I've run twelve marathons now, and
- 5:56Speaker 1: I think I ran my first seven with music. It
- 6:00Speaker 1: wasn't until I got to Chicago in twenty nineteen that
- 6:03Speaker 1: something just happened for me and I wanted to be
- 6:07Speaker 1: more present in that moment. I wanted to hear the
- 6:10Speaker 1: crowd and that happened. After the first half of that marathon.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I was on track to BQ, which I ultimately did
- 6:18Speaker 1: qualified for Boston, and I made the decision that I
- 6:21Speaker 1: wanted to hear what was happening around me, and so
- 6:24Speaker 1: I took out my AirPods and that was kind of
- 6:27Speaker 1: symbolic for me, and it's been something that I've done
- 6:29Speaker 1: in every marathon since.
- 6:31Speaker 2: I always bring the air pods because I.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Like the option to have music, especially if I'm going
- 6:36Speaker 1: through a difficult moment and maybe I feel as though
- 6:38Speaker 1: it could be my best interest to zone out a bit.
- 6:41Speaker 1: But I ran Berlin half with music, half without music,
- 6:46Speaker 1: and that was great. I found myself again leaning into
- 6:49Speaker 1: the crowds, wanting to be really present for where I am,
- 6:52Speaker 1: realizing that I was never going to get these moments
- 6:54Speaker 1: back and saying and thinking like I want to be
- 6:57Speaker 1: where my feet are.
- 7:00Speaker 2: I thought, I, how do I say this?
- 7:04Speaker 1: When I ran marathons with music, I couldn't imagine running
- 7:09Speaker 1: them without it. But once I did it without it,
- 7:12Speaker 1: I realized how special of an experience it is to
- 7:14Speaker 1: hear the crowds and be so immersed. My recommendation for
- 7:19Speaker 1: someone who might be hesitant about that would be go
- 7:22Speaker 1: on a training run without music, go on a few
- 7:25Speaker 1: and know and recognize that that experience is going to
- 7:27Speaker 1: be very different than a race because in a marathon,
- 7:30Speaker 1: there are so many people cheering, and you don't have
- 7:32Speaker 1: people cheering you on on a regular Tuesday morning running
- 7:36Speaker 1: around Central Park.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know. It's kind of hard to give
- 7:40Speaker 2: recommendations for how to make that experience better.
- 7:44Speaker 1: But I would say if you are hesitant but know
- 7:46Speaker 1: that you would like to try, give yourself the option.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's hard to cram things in your pocket, but use
- 7:53Speaker 1: a spy belt, use some sort of a running belt,
- 7:55Speaker 1: and give yourself, yeah, the opportunity to try it.
- 7:59Speaker 2: You never know until you try. And good luck in
- 8:01Speaker 2: New York.
- 8:01Speaker 1: If there is a marathon, gosh that I would say,
- 8:05Speaker 1: like headphone freeze the way to go, especially if you
- 8:07Speaker 1: are a New Yorker.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's uh, it's the New York Marathon. That's it
- 8:13Speaker 2: for this week.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Make sure you are following along with Hurdle over on
- 8:17Speaker 1: Socials at Hurdle Podcasts. I'm over at Emily Body and

- 8:30Speaker 1: is in the show notes. Another hurdle concered, Catch you
