- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Chris Hansen right now on Crimewatch Daily from here
- 0:03Speaker 1: in New York City. She moved into a farmhouse in
- 0:13Speaker 1: a safe and quaint small town, but soon she would
- 0:17Speaker 1: discover a stranger was lurking.
- 0:19Speaker 2: You noticed that your sex toys and items were missing,
- 0:22Speaker 2: all my underwear gone.
- 0:23Speaker 3: And that was just the first creepy clue.
- 0:26Speaker 4: And that's when I guess, I screamed.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Today, a sexual predator on the loose. And he's not
- 0:32Speaker 1: just anyone. When this miniac is finally unmasked, it will
- 0:36Speaker 1: leave a nation in shot.
- 0:38Speaker 5: He was a doctor Jacklin, mister Hyder, twisted and bent
- 0:41Speaker 5: and capable of horrendous things to the point of murder.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Plus a woman pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving
- 0:49Speaker 1: a tonight and she flunks the test.
- 0:56Speaker 3: But this is no ordinary.
- 0:58Speaker 6: But my name is Melissa.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I am a neurosurgeon.
- 1:02Speaker 1: The brain surgeon who's supposed to operate in a few
- 1:05Speaker 1: hours today. This neurosurgeon with the nerve to drive fully loaded,
- 1:10Speaker 1: over and over.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Why is she still on the job right now?
- 1:15Speaker 4: Let's go. Jason Mottower with Prime Watch Daily, i'ms.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Also going up from Crimewatch Daily. Yes, Let's be smart
- 1:21Speaker 2: from Crimewatch Daily.
- 1:22Speaker 5: It's Ana Garcia from Crime Watch Daily.
- 1:24Speaker 4: You got anything to say?
- 1:25Speaker 3: Is crime Watch Daily?
- 1:27Speaker 2: What you mean you don't know?
- 1:27Speaker 4: If she's thirteen, you're running away now.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Everyone, I'm Chris Hansen and welcome to a special edition
- 1:35Speaker 1: of Crime Watch Daily. How well do you really know
- 1:38Speaker 1: your neighbor, your best friend? What about your husband or
- 1:42Speaker 1: your wife? Do you think you would know if they
- 1:44Speaker 1: were a sex field monster with a thirst for blood. Well,
- 1:47Speaker 1: today's top story proves that answer might not be what
- 1:50Speaker 1: you think. Here's Nurisa Knight with savage in the shadows.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Southern Ontario, Canada. Seemingly safe.
- 1:57Speaker 5: Oh yes, a lot of retired folks, some farm folks.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And at least one twisted pervert. There are a bit
- 2:04Speaker 2: a rash of break ins here, targeting single, vulnerable women.
- 2:08Speaker 2: The thief has a creep factor that has terrified many
- 2:12Speaker 2: people in the town of Belleville. Anne Marsan Cook is
- 2:16Speaker 2: a victim and what was taken from her is personal,
- 2:20Speaker 2: very personal. You notice that your sex toys and items
- 2:23Speaker 2: were missing, Yes, just a sex toye and freaked out
- 2:27Speaker 2: and left her house. She was so scared she actually
- 2:30Speaker 2: stayed the night with her friend Howard Gray.
- 2:33Speaker 7: There was no way I was going to allow her
- 2:35Speaker 7: to stay overnight there when there was something.
- 2:38Speaker 8: Obviously the quillier and.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Returned with Howard by her side. The next morning, I
- 2:43Speaker 2: followed her over for safety's sake. I guess terror rushed
- 2:48Speaker 2: over her as she opened the drawer to her bedroom dresser.
- 2:51Speaker 9: All my underwear gone, everything in the old brass panties,
- 2:55Speaker 9: everything was gone.
- 2:57Speaker 2: But the thief did leave a chilling note take to
- 3:00Speaker 2: Anne's computer screen.
- 3:01Speaker 8: I said, don I'll go ahead and fall in the police.
- 3:04Speaker 2: What do you think he would have done had you
- 3:06Speaker 2: not left the house, had you stayed there, I.
- 3:08Speaker 5: Think you would have killed me.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Turns out and may be right. This was no ordinary
- 3:14Speaker 2: panty Bandit just thirty minutes north in the tiny town
- 3:17Speaker 2: of Tweed, there are similar but far more violent and
- 3:21Speaker 2: disturbing break ins.
- 3:22Speaker 9: They had separate investigations going on in the different communities.
- 3:26Speaker 2: In Tweed. Cops are investigating the savage sexual assaults of
- 3:30Speaker 2: two women who also had their bras and panty stolen.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But the attacker didn't stop the air taking something else,
- 3:38Speaker 2: truly terrifying.
- 3:39Speaker 9: Pictures that he took while he's doing this time.
- 3:43Speaker 2: The first police report is from a twenty one year
- 3:46Speaker 2: old woman.
- 3:47Speaker 5: She lived alone. She had a boyfriend and she had
- 3:49Speaker 5: a young daughter.
- 3:51Speaker 2: But on this night, her boyfriend is out of town
- 3:54Speaker 2: and the woman is home with her newborn. After putting
- 3:57Speaker 2: her baby to bed, she too falls asleep.
- 4:00Speaker 9: Basically broke into the home while she was sleeping.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Then suddenly, out of the deep slumber, the nightmare begins.
- 4:07Speaker 2: The woman is awakened by a man standing in her bedroom.
- 4:11Speaker 2: He quickly blindfolds her.
- 4:13Speaker 5: He fondled her in the extreme. He tied her up
- 4:18Speaker 5: and kept talking to her.
- 4:21Speaker 2: He tells her to model for him. Then the attacker
- 4:24Speaker 2: begins to humiliate.
- 4:25Speaker 9: Her, was taking pictures of her.
- 4:27Speaker 2: According to the woman, with each pose and snap of
- 4:30Speaker 2: the camera shutter, the intruder demands that she obey him
- 4:34Speaker 2: or else.
- 4:35Speaker 9: He constantly threatened her. She went through an absolutely horrendous
- 4:41Speaker 9: ordeal and every second that he was there, she thought
- 4:46Speaker 9: she was going to die.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And don't forget the entire time this degrading photoshoot is
- 4:51Speaker 2: going on, the woman's newborn baby is in the room
- 4:55Speaker 2: next door.
- 4:56Speaker 9: She also was begging him not to hurt her baby,
- 5:00Speaker 9: so she had tremendous fear for the baby, poor.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Young mother exactly then, after hours of unimaginable.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Terror, finally he left her, but.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Not before taking hundreds of photos of his half naked victim.
- 5:16Speaker 9: Again, that occurred in Tweed, in an area where people
- 5:22Speaker 9: think they're so safe, but someone was out.
- 5:26Speaker 2: There and about to do it again. Just thirteen days later,
- 5:30Speaker 2: a frantic nine to one one call comes into police.
- 5:34Speaker 2: It's from another Tweed resident. The woman caller is hysterical,
- 5:38Speaker 2: She explained, she's calling from her couch where she's still
- 5:41Speaker 2: tied up and partially nude. The woman's name is Laurie Masacot.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Like the other victim, Laurie is also sleeping when the
- 5:49Speaker 2: assault begins. It's a violent wake up call.
- 5:52Speaker 5: He punched her in the face, and.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Her account of what happened sounds eerily familiar.
- 5:58Speaker 5: He stripped her and fought again, like the first victim.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And then what appears to be the intruder's signature move.
- 6:06Speaker 5: He set up his cameras and took a great number
- 6:09Speaker 5: of pictures.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Still tweet investigators aren't sure the two incidents are related.
- 6:14Speaker 2: They even speculate the possibility of a copycat situation.
- 6:18Speaker 9: There was actually some doubt that Laurie was actually a victim,
- 6:23Speaker 9: whether she was creating her own situation calling for attention.
- 6:27Speaker 2: But when Louri files a complaint against police, they quickly
- 6:31Speaker 2: change their tune and begin to take Lourie's story more seriously.
- 6:35Speaker 2: In fact, Laurie gives the Ontario Provincial Police their first
- 6:39Speaker 2: big lead in the case.
- 6:41Speaker 5: Lori Masacott thought the voice that she was hearing of
- 6:44Speaker 5: the man she could not see sounded very much like
- 6:47Speaker 5: Larry Jones.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Larry Jones who is a longtime resident of Tweed and
- 6:53Speaker 2: he just happens to be Lurie's neighbor.
- 6:56Speaker 9: They told me that I may be a suspect for
- 6:59Speaker 9: the two to a saut sewn road.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Yay, nice for you guys?
- 7:03Speaker 3: Are kidding him?
- 7:05Speaker 2: Coming up? Do police finally have the man?
- 7:08Speaker 9: Police became more interested in him.
- 7:11Speaker 2: But suddenly there's another suspect, and he's the last guy
- 7:16Speaker 2: cops ever thought they'd catch wearing ladies underwear.
- 7:19Speaker 9: Probably one of the most upstanding individuals would ever think of.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Police are now investigating two violent sexual assaults that appear
- 7:29Speaker 1: to be the work.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Of one sadistic suspect.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Our nurse a Night is here now with more of
- 7:34Speaker 1: today's story Savage in the Shadows, Chris.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I can't even imagine the horror when twenty one year
- 7:41Speaker 2: old victim felt being tied up, blindfolded, and held captive
- 7:45Speaker 2: for more than two hours while the suspect forced her
- 7:48Speaker 2: into sexual acts and photographed her. Cops in southern Ontario, Canada,
- 7:55Speaker 2: are working over time to catch a creep. They're frantically
- 7:58Speaker 2: looking for a pervert preying on women living alone. Two
- 8:02Speaker 2: of his targets were in the town of Tweed, both
- 8:05Speaker 2: of them sexually assaulted, but their degradation didn't end there.
- 8:11Speaker 5: He had a camera and he took photographs.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Lourie Massacot was one of the first victims. She survived
- 8:18Speaker 2: a vile and violent attack.
- 8:21Speaker 9: She was held captive and sexually abused by him, and
- 8:26Speaker 9: she has a horrific story to tell.
- 8:29Speaker 2: One that includes a detail about the attacker's voice. Laurie
- 8:33Speaker 2: tells police it sounded like her neighbor Larry Jones.
- 8:37Speaker 8: Sir, probably the worst day of my life when the
- 8:40Speaker 8: paciet of my house.
- 8:41Speaker 9: He was investigated. He was asked to take a light
- 8:44Speaker 9: detector test. They took fingerprints, DNA and interrogate him at
- 8:49Speaker 9: length as a potential suspect.
- 8:51Speaker 6: I just won't pass out there. I couldn't believe it.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Whether he believes it or not, Larry Jones is in
- 8:56Speaker 2: deep trouble.
- 8:58Speaker 9: He couldn't account for himself and could.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Not account for where he was during all those different attacks.
- 9:03Speaker 9: That's right, that's right.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Larry is free to go for now, but without an alibi,
- 9:08Speaker 2: cops can't clear him. He remains a suspect. Then, as
- 9:13Speaker 2: suddenly as the break ins began, they stopped. But the
- 9:16Speaker 2: town of Tweed is still on pins and needles, wondering
- 9:19Speaker 2: if the terror is over or the twisted attacker is
- 9:22Speaker 2: just catching his breath. Then the community's fares are realized
- 9:26Speaker 2: again and it's gotten even worse. Could this pervert now
- 9:30Speaker 2: be a killer? After two months of silence, A man
- 9:35Speaker 2: in the Ontario suburb of Brighton makes a grisly discovery.
- 9:39Speaker 2: It's his girlfriend.
- 9:41Speaker 5: She was found dead in her bedroom. It was bloodstained.
- 9:46Speaker 5: It was obviously a violent, violent attack.
- 9:49Speaker 2: The victim is identified as thirty eight year old Marie
- 9:52Speaker 2: Franz Como. She was a corporal working at the nearby
- 9:56Speaker 2: Tritton Air Force Base.
- 9:57Speaker 5: She was a long time I'm Air Force staffer. She
- 10:02Speaker 5: worked as a steward on aircraft.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Despite her military training, she couldn't defend herself.
- 10:10Speaker 5: He had brutally sexually assaulted her. She fought back very
- 10:14Speaker 5: very strongly. According to all the evidence the police were
- 10:16Speaker 5: able to determine and forensically and pathologically, she fought back
- 10:20Speaker 5: for her life.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Police look at her ex boyfriend as a possible suspect.
- 10:24Speaker 2: They had recently broken things off before the attack.
- 10:29Speaker 9: No suspects other than her boyfriend who arrived and found
- 10:33Speaker 9: the body, and he was interviewed.
- 10:35Speaker 2: So you have suspects. You have Larry Jones, who is
- 10:37Speaker 2: a neighbor of Lourie. You have Marie's boyfriend who's now
- 10:42Speaker 2: a suspect. Right, it's still wide open.
- 10:45Speaker 9: Still wide open.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Marie France's ex boyfriend is eventually cleared my police. Then
- 10:51Speaker 2: just a few weeks later, a twenty seven year old
- 10:53Speaker 2: Belleville woman vanishes her name Jessica Lloyd.
- 10:58Speaker 6: She didn't show up to work on a Friday morning.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Jessica's brother, Andy knows right away something is terribly wrong.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Red flags wentn't because it was not like her.
- 11:09Speaker 2: But just hours after the Belleville woman is reported missing,
- 11:12Speaker 2: a tip comes in. It's from a cop who recalls
- 11:15Speaker 2: something strange from the day before Jessica disappeared.
- 11:19Speaker 5: A Belleville City police officer driving by on a routine
- 11:22Speaker 5: patrol past Jessica's home prior to her abduction, had spotted
- 11:26Speaker 5: the suv parked in a field next to her home.
- 11:29Speaker 2: The officer knocked on Jessica's door, but no one appeared
- 11:33Speaker 2: to be home, so she left. Before leaving, the cop
- 11:36Speaker 2: carefully takes down a description of the suv and the
- 11:39Speaker 2: odd place it was parked. From there, Jessica's brother decides
- 11:43Speaker 2: to do a little investigating of his own.
- 11:46Speaker 6: The police officer was there gave us permission to go
- 11:49Speaker 6: out for a walk and have a look.
- 11:52Speaker 2: And sure enough, just outside Jessica's back door.
- 11:55Speaker 6: He saw some footprints as well.
- 11:58Speaker 2: It's two sets of foot prints that appear to be
- 12:01Speaker 2: coming from a male and female. Then Andy notices something.
- 12:05Speaker 9: Else, tire marks, and led the police over to the
- 12:09Speaker 9: field where they were, so they actually had tire impressions.
- 12:12Speaker 6: Within a couple hours, they had the local forensics fan
- 12:15Speaker 6: there doing footprint markings, measuring footprints, measuring tire tracks.
- 12:20Speaker 2: And with it being the end of January in Canada,
- 12:23Speaker 2: the frigid temperatures have perfectly preserved the tire and shoe
- 12:27Speaker 2: marks left in the snow.
- 12:29Speaker 9: The tire impressions were tested forensically and they came up
- 12:33Speaker 9: to a specific type of suv. So they set up
- 12:37Speaker 9: a roadblock one looking for that type of suv.
- 12:42Speaker 2: A special unit is called in to work the roadblock.
- 12:45Speaker 9: There was a life and death race to find her alive.
- 12:49Speaker 2: The first car to go through the police checkpoint doesn't
- 12:52Speaker 2: meet their criteria. The drivers waved on. Then a second
- 12:56Speaker 2: vehicle approaches. It's an suv. The officers is peaked. That's
- 13:01Speaker 2: until the driver rolls down his window.
- 13:05Speaker 9: Probably one of the most upstanding individuals you would ever
- 13:08Speaker 9: think of.
- 13:10Speaker 2: The man behind the wheel is hardly a criminal. In fact,
- 13:13Speaker 2: he's a colonel. Colonel Russell Williams is the Base commander
- 13:17Speaker 2: of the Canadian Forces Base in Trenton, Ontario. CFB is
- 13:22Speaker 2: Canada's largest military air base.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Colonel Russell Williams was a rising star in the Canadian military.
- 13:31Speaker 2: That's Colonel Williams right there with the Queen of England
- 13:34Speaker 2: and the Prime Minister. He served as their pilot and
- 13:37Speaker 2: flew many other dignitaries when they would visit Canada.
- 13:40Speaker 9: Police officers at the roadblock discounted him as any possible suspect.
- 13:46Speaker 9: He was beyond reproach.
- 13:49Speaker 2: But since the colonel is driving an SUV similar to
- 13:52Speaker 2: the one in question, the officers at the checkpoint perform
- 13:55Speaker 2: a quick routine inspection.
- 13:57Speaker 5: One officer was talking with him while another unturned Provincial
- 14:00Speaker 5: Police officer was taking a molding of the tires of
- 14:04Speaker 5: his suv.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Then after that he drove through no problems. But because
- 14:10Speaker 2: a twenty seven year old woman's life is on the line,
- 14:13Speaker 2: all the tire tread impressions taken at the checkpoint, including
- 14:17Speaker 2: the highly respected colonels, are processed.
- 14:20Speaker 9: There were officers waiting at a command center real time
- 14:25Speaker 9: to develop any evidence that they could on suspects.
- 14:29Speaker 2: And when they compare Colonel Williams tire tracks to those
- 14:32Speaker 2: discovered near the missing girls home, jaws drop.
- 14:37Speaker 9: They came back as being the same.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Vehicle coming off.
- 14:42Speaker 9: People were in disbelief.
- 14:45Speaker 2: There must be a reasonable explanation.
- 14:48Speaker 9: He was the commander of Canada's largest military base.
- 14:51Speaker 2: But is the colonel hiding a major secret?
- 14:55Speaker 7: Russell, I appreciate coming an investigation like this, I mean,
- 14:58Speaker 7: I'm sure you can appreciate it's some big.
- 14:59Speaker 1: News break ds, sexual assaults, murder, and a missing woman.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Police are trying to determine if all these disturbing crimes
- 15:09Speaker 1: are the work of just one man, and a lucky
- 15:11Speaker 1: break has just led them to the most unlikely suspect,
- 15:14Speaker 1: a highly decorated colonel in the military.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Once again, here's Narissa Knit.
- 15:20Speaker 2: A dangerous predator is on the loose, violently attacking, sexually assaulting,
- 15:26Speaker 2: then humiliating vulnerable women living alone in southern Ontario, Canada.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Now cops wonder if the sex chraz psycho has turned
- 15:35Speaker 2: killing him. The frightening question comes after a thirty eight
- 15:39Speaker 2: year old Marie france Como is brutally violated then discovered
- 15:44Speaker 2: dead in her bed.
- 15:45Speaker 5: It was obviously a violent, violent attack.
- 15:48Speaker 2: Just weeks later, twenty seven year old Jessica Lloyd goes missing.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Then investigators finally get a break. They pull over a
- 15:56Speaker 2: vehicle matching the description of a suspicious SUV he spotted
- 16:00Speaker 2: near the missing woman's home. But the driver hardly fits
- 16:04Speaker 2: the profile of a twisted killer. In fact, he's a
- 16:07Speaker 2: military hero. His name Colonel Russell Williams.
- 16:12Speaker 9: He was the commander of Canada's largest military base, eight
- 16:15Speaker 9: thousand personnel under him. He was a pilot that flew
- 16:20Speaker 9: missions around the world. He flew the Queen on visits
- 16:24Speaker 9: to Canada.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Despite his pristine reputation, the decorated colonel is called in
- 16:29Speaker 2: for questioning.
- 16:30Speaker 7: Well, yeah, Russell, I appreciate coming. We're treating Jessica's case
- 16:34Speaker 7: as an emergent situation, obviously.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Detective staff Sergeant Jim Smythe reads Colonel Russell Williams his
- 16:41Speaker 2: rights and then quickly gets down to business.
- 16:45Speaker 7: Hey, Jessica Lloyd is one of four cases that we're
- 16:50Speaker 7: currently investigating. Over the past about four or five months,
- 16:55Speaker 7: there have been four currencies. In a nutshell, That's what
- 16:57Speaker 7: we wanted to talk to you about, Okay, because essentially
- 17:02Speaker 7: there was a connection between you and all four of
- 17:07Speaker 7: those cases. Would you a great.
- 17:13Speaker 8: Yes, yes, say there's a connection here.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Colonel Russell Williams has two residentss a new home in
- 17:20Speaker 2: Ottawa and a cottage in Tweed, and Tweed just happens
- 17:24Speaker 2: to be the same place where two of the vicious
- 17:27Speaker 2: sexual assaults took place coincidence, and.
- 17:31Speaker 7: I believe you're a door two down from one of
- 17:34Speaker 7: those two incidents in Tweed. Three doors down here, Yeah,
- 17:38Speaker 7: very close and.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Absolutely And then the detective asked the military man for
- 17:43Speaker 2: his help.
- 17:44Speaker 7: What would you be willing to give me today to
- 17:47Speaker 7: help me move past you in this investigation?
- 17:52Speaker 8: What what do you need?
- 17:54Speaker 4: Well?
- 17:56Speaker 7: Would you be willing to supply things like fingerprints, blood samples,
- 17:59Speaker 7: things like that? Yeah, footwear impressions, Yeah, okay, I'm going
- 18:04Speaker 7: to step out and make sure they're still available.
- 18:06Speaker 5: Detective Sergeant Smith left the room on occasion, he went
- 18:10Speaker 5: out and conferred with his colleagues as to what was.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Happening, and what is happening Outside the interrogation room is
- 18:17Speaker 2: an army of cops are assembling. There are sixty to
- 18:20Speaker 2: seventy investigators gathering and processing evidence in real time and
- 18:25Speaker 2: real quickly. In fact, each time Colonel Williams reveals something
- 18:30Speaker 2: potentially incriminating, they were ready to.
- 18:32Speaker 9: Search, and as he was talking about different things, they
- 18:37Speaker 9: were able to then execute the warrants. So as they're
- 18:40Speaker 9: talking to him, they're at his house, they've got his.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Carts, and almost immediately the results are in. On the
- 18:46Speaker 2: first piece of explosive evidence, it's confirmed the tire markings
- 18:51Speaker 2: from the Colonel's vehicle and the ones discovered in the
- 18:54Speaker 2: field next to Jessica's home are an exact match. Detectives.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Mith goes back into the interrogation room armed with the
- 19:03Speaker 2: damning details.
- 19:05Speaker 7: Tires do you have on your pathfinder?
- 19:08Speaker 8: I think I think they're toil.
- 19:13Speaker 7: Would it surprised you to know that when the CSI
- 19:16Speaker 7: officers were looking around her property that they identified a
- 19:22Speaker 7: set of tire tracks to the north of her property.
- 19:26Speaker 7: They identified those tires as the same tires on your pathfinder? Really?
- 19:31Speaker 8: Yeah, okay?
- 19:35Speaker 9: The investigator thought Williams would say I loaned my car
- 19:39Speaker 9: to someone, he would clear himself just instantly, But he didn't.
- 19:45Speaker 9: He just kept talking.
- 19:48Speaker 8: If that's the case, that's it, that's versepres.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Then crime scene investigators process the shoe impressions found outside
- 19:56Speaker 2: Jessica's home and compare them with get this, the very
- 20:00Speaker 2: same boots the kernel is currently wearing in his interview.
- 20:05Speaker 9: The investigator looked at his shoes, He asked if he
- 20:08Speaker 9: could look at the shoes, took them out, did a.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Comparison, and in a matter of minutes the results are back,
- 20:15Speaker 2: and so was detective Smile.
- 20:17Speaker 7: The problem is, Russell, is every time I walk out
- 20:19Speaker 7: of this room, there's another issue.
- 20:21Speaker 8: That comes up.
- 20:21Speaker 7: Okay, and it's not issues that point away from you,
- 20:24Speaker 7: it's issues to point at you.
- 20:26Speaker 8: Okay, this is a photo.
- 20:29Speaker 7: Copy of the boot that you took off your foot.
- 20:33Speaker 8: Yeah, just a little while ago. Okay, these are identical.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Next, the detective puts all of his cards on the table.
- 20:45Speaker 7: Your vehicle drove up the side of Jessica Lloyd's house.
- 20:50Speaker 7: Your boots walked to the back of Jessica Lloyd's house.
- 20:54Speaker 8: You and I both know you were at Jessica Lloyd's house.
- 21:00Speaker 8: Eat in align.
- 21:04Speaker 10: At the most, say that's what you need to explain it,
- 21:07Speaker 10: because this is the other problem we're having wrestled.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Okay, and share something with the kernel that's about to
- 21:15Speaker 2: push him over the edge.
- 21:17Speaker 10: Right now, there's a switch warn't being attributed.
- 21:23Speaker 8: So your wife now knows what's going on.
- 21:26Speaker 7: There's a sort of executed your residence in Tweed when
- 21:30Speaker 7: the vehicles were seized.
- 21:32Speaker 8: Okay.
- 21:33Speaker 2: At this point in the multi hour interview, DNA has
- 21:37Speaker 2: already been recovered at all four of the victims residences.
- 21:41Speaker 7: That evidence comes in when that GNA match, When that
- 21:44Speaker 7: phone rings and somebody knocks from this door, your credibility
- 21:46Speaker 7: is gone.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Then textbook interrogation analysts will say this is where the
- 21:52Speaker 2: interview takes a huge turn with the tiniest of twists
- 21:56Speaker 2: in the form of a name change.
- 22:00Speaker 8: Russ tell me Russ, please, okay.
- 22:06Speaker 9: And when he was broken, he said, call me Russ.
- 22:10Speaker 9: So he knew the detective surgeon investigating him knew that
- 22:14Speaker 9: he brought him down. And at that point the interrogation
- 22:17Speaker 9: turns very different.
- 22:19Speaker 8: It's hard to leave.
- 22:20Speaker 4: This is not.
- 22:24Speaker 11: I'm struggling if I use that.
- 22:25Speaker 8: My wife is what are you looking for?
- 22:28Speaker 11: I'm concerned that they're tearing apart my wife's brand new house.
- 22:31Speaker 5: They had a warrant for the dream home, which turned
- 22:35Speaker 5: out to be the key thing that broke Williams. Please
- 22:39Speaker 5: don't bother my wife by searching the dream home.
- 22:43Speaker 6: I want to.
- 22:44Speaker 11: Minimize the impact on my wife.
- 22:46Speaker 6: So do we do that?
- 22:49Speaker 4: Wow?
- 22:51Speaker 11: We start by telling the truth? Okay, okay, it's where
- 22:57Speaker 11: is she.
- 23:01Speaker 2: Gett coming up confessions of a twisted killer?
- 23:07Speaker 5: And there she was in a wooded area.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Of sex, lies, videotape, and a secret room.
- 23:14Speaker 9: Prime trophies that he was collecting. He started putting them
- 23:17Speaker 9: in a room in his house.
- 23:19Speaker 2: And the Ultimate double life exposed a different kind of sick.
- 23:25Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 23:25Speaker 1: Now to the conclusion of today's story, Savage in the Shadows,
- 23:32Speaker 1: let's head back to our narisanite Chris on the outside,
- 23:36Speaker 1: Colonel Russell Williams was the perfect soldier.
- 23:39Speaker 2: However, Williams was living a dark double life, a national
- 23:46Speaker 2: hero now exposed as a hideous monster.
- 23:50Speaker 8: By raped her in her house and then I took
- 23:54Speaker 8: her to the.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Current decorated Canadian Forces officer. Colonel Russell Williams has just
- 24:00Speaker 2: confessed to viciously attacking several women and murdering twenty seven
- 24:06Speaker 2: year old Jessica Lloyd, then dumping her body.
- 24:09Speaker 7: So where am I going on here? To get to her?
- 24:13Speaker 11: In this block hair in detail that with that Areael
- 24:16Speaker 11: Stranger shoes.
- 24:18Speaker 2: The cold blooded colonel calmly sits and points out the
- 24:22Speaker 2: general location of what's left of Jessica while cops race
- 24:26Speaker 2: to recover her. Detective Smythe wants to keep Colonel Williams talking.
- 24:31Speaker 8: Twenty water or anything? Sure, Okay, I pray back?
- 24:35Speaker 2: He asked Williams about the two women he sexually assaulted
- 24:38Speaker 2: and tweed the twenty one year old young mother and
- 24:41Speaker 2: his neighbor Laurie massacot.
- 24:43Speaker 12: Hit her with my hand while she was sleeping, subdued
- 24:46Speaker 12: her mostly just by waiting, have taught her pet her
- 24:52Speaker 12: take off her pasionas.
- 24:55Speaker 11: Took some pictures, like some.
- 24:58Speaker 6: Of her underwear.
- 24:59Speaker 11: Left is the woman same kind of young for closed
- 25:04Speaker 11: some pictures and left.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Detective Smile steps outside where investigators are waiting. They download
- 25:10Speaker 2: him on the latest evidence coming in or going out.
- 25:12Speaker 2: In this case, during the nearly ten hour interrogation, the
- 25:16Speaker 2: colonel's computer drive was flown to Microsoft in California. Armed
- 25:21Speaker 2: with this knowledge, the detective rejoins the colonel inside the
- 25:25Speaker 2: interrogation room.
- 25:27Speaker 7: You can't erase things from computers.
- 25:29Speaker 8: That's pretty common knowledge these days. It just doesn't happen.
- 25:33Speaker 2: The kernel feels the heat.
- 25:34Speaker 11: I'll tell you where they are. Where are they?
- 25:39Speaker 10: They're in the house there in Autawa. Yeah, and whose
- 25:42Speaker 10: images are on those cards?
- 25:45Speaker 8: Well, I've erased them the day I expect you'll be
- 25:51Speaker 8: able to draw images of Jessica and I.
- 25:55Speaker 2: Williams goes on to tell the detective they will also
- 25:58Speaker 2: find images of the two women he's sexually assaulted in Tweed.
- 26:03Speaker 8: Russ, you're doing the right thing here, Okay.
- 26:10Speaker 11: Well again, my interest is in the thinking.
- 26:14Speaker 2: My wife's life lazier easier. Probably not, As the Colonel
- 26:19Speaker 2: continues to share his dark and depraved play by play.
- 26:23Speaker 10: Why do we start with Jessica? How does that start
- 26:27Speaker 10: for you? I saw her in her house on her
- 26:33Speaker 10: kidna Woodston ADDIE's.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Then by Thursday night Jessica is at home alone in
- 26:43Speaker 2: her bed when the Colonel strikes.
- 26:45Speaker 8: So I went through the back patio door while she
- 26:50Speaker 8: was sleeping. Well, so I raped her in her house
- 26:57Speaker 8: and then I took her to the car and took.
- 26:59Speaker 6: Her to.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Williams explains how he kidnaps Jessica and takes her to
- 27:05Speaker 2: his home in Tweed, where he rapes and photographs her,
- 27:09Speaker 2: torturing Jessica for nearly twenty four hours and then promising
- 27:13Speaker 2: to let her go, he tells cops is a promise
- 27:17Speaker 2: he never intended to keep.
- 27:19Speaker 11: And then that's we're walking out. Struck her on the
- 27:21Speaker 11: back of the head. What's the result?
- 27:24Speaker 8: Her skull gave way a little bit felting.
- 27:29Speaker 11: There was a lot of bloods.
- 27:30Speaker 8: I think that's what happened. She was immediately he unconscious, and.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Then I strangled her in a matter of fat tone.
- 27:42Speaker 2: The one time commander goes on to describe how he
- 27:45Speaker 2: cleans up his home and stores Jessica's body in the garage.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Then he does the unimaginable. After committing cold blooded murder,
- 27:53Speaker 2: Colonel Williams says, he flies to California on a military mission.
- 27:58Speaker 2: It will be four days before the old returns to
- 28:00Speaker 2: Tweed to dump Jessica's body.
- 28:03Speaker 8: Marie Frantz como, she actually discovered me in the basement.
- 28:09Speaker 11: She was trying to get her cat to come upstairs,
- 28:10Speaker 11: and the cat was in the basement that see me
- 28:13Speaker 11: and was fixated on me in the corner.
- 28:17Speaker 2: The colonel explains. When Marie Franz investigates what her cat
- 28:20Speaker 2: is staring at, she comes face to face with him.
- 28:23Speaker 2: He's wearing a mask. William says he hit her with
- 28:26Speaker 2: a heavy flashlight and.
- 28:29Speaker 11: Tira upstairs suffocated her.
- 28:36Speaker 8: Some tape.
- 28:38Speaker 7: Did you take anything out of Marie France's house or
- 28:42Speaker 7: Jessica Lloyd's house, Yeah, some of the underwear.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Okay, that's all, Well, not exactly. Remember his computer is
- 28:54Speaker 2: with those tech experts in California. Turns out they discover
- 28:58Speaker 2: thousands of highly egretive and organized files.
- 29:02Speaker 9: He took photographs and he put everything on his computer.
- 29:06Speaker 9: He's got them all cataloged on his computer. He's got
- 29:08Speaker 9: a deep end of password after password.
- 29:12Speaker 2: And when they unlock his password and open his files
- 29:15Speaker 2: of photos, the kernel is out of uniform. He's wearing underwear,
- 29:21Speaker 2: ladies underwear.
- 29:23Speaker 11: What about anybody else's underwear? Yeah, photos of you in
- 29:28Speaker 11: there underwear.
- 29:30Speaker 2: While investigators continue to restore files on the colonel's computer
- 29:34Speaker 2: and try to make sense of the strange snapshots, Detective
- 29:37Speaker 2: Smythe pushes for more details about the kinky contents on
- 29:41Speaker 2: the military man's hard drive camera.
- 29:44Speaker 11: Are you using? By the way, it's the digital son.
- 29:49Speaker 8: He just have the one camera.
- 29:50Speaker 11: Yeah, in the video camera, Yes, video, and so I
- 29:56Speaker 11: was running the video and then take still pictures.
- 30:01Speaker 2: So the video pretty much covers heavening everything.
- 30:05Speaker 9: While he's doing this to her. He actually captured her
- 30:08Speaker 9: murder on video.
- 30:11Speaker 2: The Kernel admits he videotaped the rapes and murders of
- 30:15Speaker 2: Jessica and Marie France, but he also captured something else. Sadly,
- 30:21Speaker 2: their final words after more than three hours of brutal
- 30:25Speaker 2: sexual assaults, Marie France cried on video, stating, you're going
- 30:30Speaker 2: to kill me?
- 30:30Speaker 9: Aren't you.
- 30:31Speaker 2: I don't want to die. I don't deserve to die.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I've been good. And Jessica's final words were for her mother,
- 30:40Speaker 2: saying if I die, will you make sure that my
- 30:43Speaker 2: mom knows.
- 30:43Speaker 5: I love her.
- 30:46Speaker 2: As the interrogation comes to an end, Detective Smythe has
- 30:49Speaker 2: one more question for the military man living the ultimate
- 30:53Speaker 2: double life?
- 30:54Speaker 8: Is what you told me tonight?
- 30:55Speaker 7: The truth?
- 30:56Speaker 10: Yeah, it's for whatever reason you didn't end up on
- 30:59Speaker 10: our on our radar, so to speak. Do you think
- 31:03Speaker 10: it would have happened again?
- 31:05Speaker 6: I was hoping not that.
- 31:07Speaker 13: I can't ask the question why do you think these
- 31:09Speaker 13: things happen? Have you spent much time thinking about that
- 31:21Speaker 13: about why?
- 31:22Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 31:24Speaker 11: Yeah, but I don't know any answers. Man, I'm pretty
- 31:37Speaker 11: sure the answers don't matter.
- 31:39Speaker 2: When the investigation into Colonel Russell Williams is over, police
- 31:42Speaker 2: agencies from Ottawa, Orlean's, Belleville and Tweed will discover that
- 31:46Speaker 2: the decorated soldier took panty thievery to the next level
- 31:51Speaker 2: with eighty two break ins during just two years. Many
- 31:54Speaker 2: of the houses belonged to his friends and neighbors, and
- 31:57Speaker 2: even the most innocent of residents, so the.
- 32:01Speaker 5: Trove of women's underwear came from the breakings that he
- 32:06Speaker 5: had done. They belonged to young women as young as
- 32:09Speaker 5: a neighbor's twelve year old daughter.
- 32:12Speaker 2: But the colonel didn't just save snapshots of himself and
- 32:15Speaker 2: his victims wearing laingerie on his computer. He also saved
- 32:19Speaker 2: them in real life. In a secret room.
- 32:22Speaker 9: During the break ins. He was collecting underwear. And I
- 32:24Speaker 9: mean criminals do collect trophies, and these literally were crime
- 32:28Speaker 9: trophies that he was collecting. He started putting them in
- 32:30Speaker 9: a room in his house and basically they were filling
- 32:33Speaker 9: up there, hundreds and hundreds of pieces of lingerie that
- 32:37Speaker 9: he'd gathered.
- 32:38Speaker 2: The disgraced colonel is arrested and charged with two counts
- 32:42Speaker 2: of first degree murder to brutal sexual assaults, plus eighty
- 32:46Speaker 2: two breaking, an entering and theft related charges. The once
- 32:51Speaker 2: model military man is sentenced to two terms of life
- 32:55Speaker 2: in prison with no chance of parole. The victims' families
- 32:59Speaker 2: are in court when the verdict is read.
- 33:02Speaker 6: Kind of bring my sister's face back into it, so
- 33:04Speaker 6: it's not all about him, and it's not all about
- 33:06Speaker 6: what he's done, And try and remember there is families
- 33:09Speaker 6: that are very angry at what he's done.
- 33:10Speaker 1: For two months after his sentence, Russell Williams's wife filed
- 33:17Speaker 1: for divorce. She maintains that she knew nothing about his
- 33:21Speaker 1: secret and deadly double life. And that's something I want
- 33:24Speaker 1: to talk to this next person about. How do people
- 33:26Speaker 1: with these jeculate hide personalities fool the folks around them?
- 33:29Speaker 1: For that, let me bring in forensic psychologist doctor Louis Lessinger.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Thanks for being here as always, I appreciated face. How
- 33:34Speaker 1: does the wife not know what this is going on?
- 33:36Speaker 3: That's very typical, Chris. We've heard this for over one
- 33:39Speaker 3: hundred years.
- 33:39Speaker 14: The average person listens to this and they say, how
- 33:42Speaker 14: could it possibly be that she lives with them and
- 33:44Speaker 14: didn't know it. It happens all the time because they
- 33:47Speaker 14: keep that part of their personality highly encapsulated and not
- 33:51Speaker 14: visible to really anybody.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Else, So they compartmentalize that evil part of their life
- 33:55Speaker 1: without a doubt. Yes, this guy reminds me of another
- 33:59Speaker 1: case we've covered, the Beak killer. This guy lived a
- 34:02Speaker 1: normal suburban life and he's killing women along the women.
- 34:06Speaker 14: Well, these murders are sexually motivated. That's why he's doing it.
- 34:10Speaker 14: You know, these guys. Also when they're in their families,
- 34:12Speaker 14: they're also described as good fathers and good husbands. That's
- 34:15Speaker 14: how Holley coaches without a doubt, Yeah, without a doubt.
- 34:18Speaker 3: So he was taking videos and pictures of his victims.
- 34:21Speaker 3: What does that say about his psychem Well.
- 34:24Speaker 14: He's doing that to create his own pornography. Very often
- 34:28Speaker 14: a serial killer in prison will demand his crime scene photos,
- 34:32Speaker 14: saying that he's working.
- 34:33Speaker 3: On his appeal.
- 34:33Speaker 14: It's not for his appeal, he wants to relive the
- 34:36Speaker 14: crime with the pornography of the crime scene.
- 34:38Speaker 1: You've actually done studies on rapid sequence serial sexual homicide.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Can you break this down? Is how it relates to
- 34:45Speaker 3: the colonel's case.
- 34:46Speaker 14: We thought for many, many years that the serial killer
- 34:49Speaker 14: kills and then he deliberates for a long period of
- 34:51Speaker 14: time six months, a year, kills again. In our research
- 34:54Speaker 14: that I did with the FBI, we found that close
- 34:56Speaker 14: to fifty percent of serial sexual murderers kill and rapid sequence,
- 35:01Speaker 14: some within the same rapid sequence spree and others killing
- 35:05Speaker 14: clusters one and two and then a period of time three,
- 35:08Speaker 14: four and five.
- 35:09Speaker 1: Doctor Luth, Thank you, as always for your insight into
- 35:11Speaker 1: this very disturbing case.
- 35:13Speaker 3: For more information, you can go to crimewatch Daily dot com.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Still to come a dui bust and look who's behind
- 35:22Speaker 1: the wheel? Look, I'm here and as one of her
- 35:26Speaker 1: former patients is about to find out, it's.
- 35:28Speaker 3: Not the first time.
- 35:29Speaker 4: I believe any patient has the right to know.
- 35:33Speaker 1: The all New investigation that asks how much do you
- 35:36Speaker 1: really know about your doctor?
- 35:38Speaker 3: Next time?
- 35:41Speaker 1: Anytime you have to go in for surgery, it can
- 35:43Speaker 1: be a scary situation, especially if it's brain surgery. So
- 35:48Speaker 1: what if you found out your doctor had been arrested
- 35:50Speaker 1: multiple times for drunk driving or worse yet, you were
- 35:53Speaker 1: never told. We're teaming up with our affiliate w ITI
- 35:56Speaker 1: in Milwaukee for the all New.
- 35:58Speaker 3: Investigation any altha tonight it's the road test no driver
- 36:05Speaker 3: wants to take.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Would you have to form the test for me so
- 36:08Speaker 1: you can get the sold on this night, one woman
- 36:11Speaker 1: is trying to walk the line, but every few steps
- 36:13Speaker 1: she stumbles and forgets, standing on one leg. And this
- 36:19Speaker 1: is not your average mom who's had one too many
- 36:21Speaker 1: after a girl's night out. No, it's much scarier than
- 36:25Speaker 1: that guy.
- 36:26Speaker 5: Look, I'm a.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Yes this to U, I suspect is a doctor under
- 36:32Speaker 1: the influence it turns out she's a well respected neurosurgeon
- 36:36Speaker 1: in Milwaukee.
- 36:37Speaker 2: My name is Melisa Massius.
- 36:39Speaker 4: I am a neurosurgeon.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Doctor Messius was pulled over just before ten pm. Back
- 36:48Speaker 1: at the station, a blood test reveals her blood alcohol
- 36:51Speaker 1: content is point two oh seven. That's more than twice
- 36:54Speaker 1: the legal limit. Here's the scariest part, though. The wobbly
- 36:58Speaker 1: surgeon was scheduled to perform two delicate operations just ten
- 37:01Speaker 1: hours later. Okay, thankfully she's forced to cancel because cops
- 37:06Speaker 1: put her on a twelve hour hold in the drunk tag.
- 37:17Speaker 1: The drama started earlier that night, when the fifty year
- 37:19Speaker 1: old doctor Messias went to a salon to have her
- 37:22Speaker 1: hair done. Employees there told police she flew into a rage.
- 37:27Speaker 1: To believe that was.
- 37:30Speaker 12: Absolutely I'm not kidding you crazy.
- 37:33Speaker 1: The salon called the cops, reportedly telling them they could
- 37:36Speaker 1: smell booze on her breath. Police tracked her plate and
- 37:39Speaker 1: pulled the doctor over. Messias tells cops she was upset
- 37:43Speaker 1: because the hairdresser was running late.
- 37:45Speaker 4: I did for my haircut and so well.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Salon workers told cops. Messius knocked down her promotional display
- 37:56Speaker 1: with a swipe of her hand smashing a vase and
- 37:59Speaker 1: even left without paying.
- 38:01Speaker 10: I literally could not say anything without getting born in.
- 38:05Speaker 1: And this reportedly is not Messias's first dui. In fact,
- 38:09Speaker 1: the revered neurosurgeon has been arrested as staggering three times
- 38:13Speaker 1: for driving drunk in two different states. And get this,
- 38:18Speaker 1: she still kept her license to practice medicine.
- 38:21Speaker 4: Oh what have I gotten myself into?
- 38:25Speaker 1: A few weeks after her third arrest, Messias performed a
- 38:28Speaker 1: spinal surgery on patient Darshell Garner, but Darsiell says she
- 38:33Speaker 1: had no clue her surgeon faced criminal charges for driving drunk.
- 38:36Speaker 4: She would never touch. Had I known she had any
- 38:39Speaker 4: ow I anything, she would have never touch me.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Darshall says she found out about the pending charges when
- 38:46Speaker 1: the hospital sent her a letter that the surgeon was
- 38:48Speaker 1: no longer with Aurora Healthcare. Darshell has followed a complaint
- 38:52Speaker 1: with the hospital administration.
- 38:54Speaker 4: I believe any patient has the right to know.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Since her arrests, the State Metal Examining Board recommended public discipline,
- 39:02Speaker 1: but the slippery surgeon cut a deal. She'll continue to
- 39:05Speaker 1: work as long as she stays sober and goes to treatment. Now,
- 39:09Speaker 1: Messias has left Wisconsin to work in a Texas surgical center.
- 39:13Speaker 2: I'm returning to Corpus Christi, Texas to join the South
- 39:17Speaker 2: Texas Brand and Spine Center.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Should patients at the South Texas Brain and Spine Center
- 39:22Speaker 1: watch their backs? On the Texas Medical Board website, doctor
- 39:26Speaker 1: Messias reports she had no criminal history and no history
- 39:30Speaker 1: of disciplinary action. We reached out to the doctor's new employers,
- 39:34Speaker 1: but they have not gotten back to us. For now,
- 39:39Speaker 1: the doctor seems to have dodged a bullet. Her first
