- 6:09Let's next turn to The Advocate columnist and Life on
- 6:12the Old Dirt Road by Bobby Thorpe Kawane's Fair and
- 6:17Honey Festival. He's included a photo of a winning float
- 6:21from the Kawanees School Fair in nineteen sixty five. Back
- 6:26in nineteen seventy seven, the end of a tradition ended
- 6:30and a new one began. I began attending school at
- 6:34L B J in nineteen seventy five in the first grade.
- 6:38Each year until nineteen seventy seven, our school, along with
- 6:42other county schools, would march through the town just before
- 6:46Labour Day weekend during the Kowanee School Fair. The fairs
- 6:50last year was in nineteen seventy seven, which was the
- 6:55inaugural year of the Honey Festival. My father always attended
- 6:59the festival until his death in two thousand and one.
- 7:02He was buried on South Fork on August thirty first,
- 7:06two thousand and one. Ironically, that was the start date
- 7:10for the two thousand and one festival. Dad could always
- 7:13be found down near the main stage on what was
- 7:16then Court Street, located in front of the Methodist Mountain
- 7:20Mission building, which was torn down almost fifteen years ago.
- 7:24Dad was known by many as the Indian who dances.
- 7:28Dad had Cherokee blood from his ancestors on the Prater
- 7:32side of the family. Father loved to dance and have fun,
- 7:35and many loved and enjoyed his dancing style. At least
- 7:39weekly someone mentions my dad to me around town. While
- 7:43Dad enjoyed dancing, my brother and I would check out
- 7:46the large tent and food booths. Over the years, we
- 7:49have enjoyed the four h corn dogs, funnel cakes, and
- 7:52polish sausages. The Fresh Squeeze lemonade was always a hit.
- 7:58Once the Judicial Building was constructed in two thousand four,
- 8:01the main stage was placed in City Hall parking lot
- 8:04and the food booths were situated nearby. But the twenty
- 8:08twenty one festival brought back fond memories of our family.
- 8:13The main stage was moved from Broadway back to its
- 8:16original location near the old jail, while the food booths
- 8:19were moved near the CornDog booth at the Extension Service
- 8:22Office building. Now the stage is located in the parking
- 8:26lot behind the old Scoopy Doo building. The school fare
- 8:30and the Honey Festival bring back fond memories from growing
- 8:33up on the old dirt road. Next, let's check in
- 8:37with Bob Deaton. This we should know. As the November
- 8:42election approaches, every American should become aware of the following information. Unfortunately,
- 8:48too many Americans have little knowledge of the fundamentals of
- 8:51our American democracy. Locally, all county offices are up for election.
- 8:57The Democratic and the Republican Party will have selected their nominees.
- 9:03There is one candidate running as an independent. You the
- 9:06voters have the opportunity to select and vote for any
- 9:10one of those candidates for a particular office in the
- 9:13November general election. The three branches of our government, on
- 9:17both the state and federal level are the executive, legislative,
- 9:22and the judicial branches. On the state level, the judicial
- 9:26branch is elected, whereas on the federal level they are
- 9:29appointed by the President with the approval of the Congress.
- 9:33It was recently revealed that many college students were unable
- 9:37to name the three branches of our government. It seems
- 9:40many colleges are making a concerted effort to not teach
- 9:43any American history to the next generation. Every ten years,
- 9:47since seventeen ninety, the census has been taken. Often the
- 9:51districts of the United States representatives and the state senators
- 9:55and the state representatives have to be redrawn to reflect
- 9:59equal reports presentation for all Americans. The state legislatures are
- 10:04involved in that process. Most state legislative bodies are set
- 10:09up with a bicameral system with a House of Representatives
- 10:13and a state Senate, similar to our national body. However,
- 10:17some states have only one legislative body, and this is
- 10:21known as a unicameral system. In Frankfort, we have a
- 10:25bicameral system with one hundred member House of Representatives and
- 10:30a thirty eight member state Senate. With Kentucky's population about
- 10:34four million, each state representative represents about forty thousand Kentuckians,
- 10:40while each state senator represents about one hundred thousand citizens. Nationally,
- 10:45as previously stated, we have a bicameral system with a
- 10:49four hundred thirty five member House of Representatives and one
- 10:53hundred member United States Senate. Each of the four hundred
- 10:58thirty five members of the House of Representatives represents about
- 11:02seven hundred thousand Americans, while each state has two United
- 11:06States Senators regardless of that state's population. This November, the
- 11:11voters in Kentucky and around the nation will decide who
- 11:14will represent them in many of the above legislative bodies.
- 11:18Every two years, one third of the United States Senate
- 11:21is up for election. All four hundred and thirty five
- 11:25members of the United States House of Representatives must stand
- 11:28for election or re election every two years. The Senate
- 11:33at all times has sixty six members that have been
- 11:35there for a number of years with experience, whereas the
- 11:39total membership of the House of Representatives changes every two years.
- 11:44When James Madison and our founding fathers wrote the Constitution
- 11:48in the latter years part of the seventeen eighties, the
- 11:52small states feared they would have little power in the
- 11:55Congress if representation in Congress was based only on population.
- 12:00This also gave them more clout in the electoral College
- 12:03votes for president. In the electoral college that elects the president,
- 12:08each state would have as many electoral votes as they
- 12:12had representatives and two United States senators. Kentucky, for example,
- 12:17has six representatives and two United States Senators. Therefore, Kentucky
- 12:22has eight electoral votes. There are five hundred thirty eight
- 12:26electoral votes, including the three allotted to Washington, d C.
- 12:31A candidate for president must receive two hundred seventy electoral
- 12:35votes to become president. Bob Eaton seventy five Parson Drive, Jackson, Kentucky. Next,
- 12:43let's check in with pastor Naomi for so be it?
- 12:48How to rest? Have you ever met yourself coming and
- 12:52going feeling overwhelmed, trying to get everything done, seeming no
- 12:57matter how hard you try, you feel exhausted even before
- 13:00you start. It is a never ending cycle. Stress will
- 13:05begin to manifest in many ways throughout our mind, soul, spirit,
- 13:09and body. This is not healthy, and we can do
- 13:12something about it. Matthew eleven, twenty eight reads, Come unto me,
- 13:18all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I
- 13:21will give you rest. This verse is a direct invitation
- 13:25from Jesus to all who are weary, burdened, or struggling
- 13:28under the weight of sin, responsibilities, or life's hardships. The
- 13:33promise is that he alone can provide true rest, both
- 13:37spiritually and emotionally through his grace and salvation. There is
- 13:41an invitation to the weary. Jesus call those who are
- 13:45laboring and heavy laden, referring to people burdened by sin, guilt,
- 13:49or life's difficulties, to come to him for relief and comfort.
- 13:54The rest off offered is not merely physical relaxation, but
- 13:58spiritual peace, forgivenessness, and renewal of the soul. Unlike earthly
- 14:03rulers or authorities, Jesus is approachable and willing to receive
- 14:07anyone who seeks him, emphasizing his grace and mercy. The
- 14:12following verse Matthew eleven, verses twenty nine to thirty expands
- 14:16on this by encouraging believers to take My yoke upon
- 14:20you and learn of me, highlighting that learning from Christ
- 14:24and living according to his teachings brings lasting rest, enlightens burdens.
- 14:30This verse brings comfort and encouragement, reminding believers that, no
- 14:34matter the weight of their struggles, turning to Jesus provides relief, guidance,
- 14:38and spiritual restoration. It reassures us of the personal and
- 14:42compassionate nature of Christ's invitation. One of the enemy's greatest
- 14:47strategies is keeping you mentally restless, because a restless mind
- 14:52rarely discerns clearly. Your greatest weapon against the enemy is
- 14:56not constant activity. It is rest rooted in trust. Rest
- 15:01is not weakness. Rest is evidence that you trust God
- 15:04to govern outcomes. Rest is a declaration I trust God
- 15:09enough to stop striving. Many of the enemy's devices lose
- 15:13their power when you refuse to live in a state
- 15:16of urgency. Rest allows you to see traps and that
- 15:20anxiety would rush you into The enemy thrives in chaos.
- 15:24Rest brings clarity, and clarity exposes strategy. Many battles you
- 15:30think require effort require rest and discernment. If the enemy
- 15:35can keep you restless, he can keep you reckless. The
- 15:38enemy wins many battles simply by exhausting believers. Rest shuts
- 15:43down hundreds of unnecessary battles. Many battles will disappear when
- 15:48a person learns to rest. Sometimes the most important spiritual
- 15:52thing you can do is to refuse to live in
- 15:55constant urgency. The Bible teaches that true strength come from God,
- 16:01not from human resources or will power. It emphasizes that
- 16:04believers should rely on God's strength rather than their own.
- 16:08We get our strength through prayer and the scriptures, by faith,
- 16:11receiving our rest from the Lord. Amen, and so be it.

- 23:48eight six nine three five. And returning to the Advocate columnist,
- 23:54let's check in with Randy Cloth, LPCC and CC four
- 23:59from the Council Small Moments, Lasting Impact. We have more
- 24:05influence on others than we realize. Among Jesus' last words
- 24:09on this earth, he told his disciples to go out
- 24:12and make disciples of all nations and peoples. He was
- 24:15essentially encouraging them to serve as spiritual mentors to others.
- 24:19My articles integrate faith and psychology. I want to focus
- 24:23on mentoring others more broadly, the influence that we have
- 24:26on others. We can be a positive or negative influence
- 24:29on those we encounter family, friends, co workers, church friends,
- 24:33and youth. You have more influence on others than you think,
- 24:37not only the words that you say, but also your attitude, mood, beliefs,
- 24:41and priorities. We can be a helpful guide for people
- 24:44in matters of faith, family, relationships, work, and career. As
- 24:49I am writing this, I realized we would all do
- 24:51well to improve in each of these areas. We do
- 24:53not need to be afraid to assist others and seek assistance.
- 24:57As a brand new therapist, I would rarely ask for
- 24:59he help. I didn't want people to think I didn't
- 25:02know what I was doing. As I gained more experience
- 25:05and confidence, I would seek guidance more readily as needed.
- 25:09When Jesus talked about these things, he promised to be
- 25:11with his followers always. I do not know about you,
- 25:14but I know that I need the Lord's help daily.
- 25:17We lead others through direct, meaningful discussions. We need more
- 25:21of this examples and direction in real time, real life situations.
- 25:25Be a friend, Spend time with those we want to assist,
- 25:28and try to influence others through encouragement and guidance. Invite
- 25:32a friend to lunch or call or text them with
- 25:35helpful thoughts. As a counselor, I work with people dealing
- 25:38with incredible problems. My daughter often sends me humorous memes
- 25:43that provide wonderful comic relief. We all do more of
- 25:46this than we realize, but we need to be more
- 25:48intentional thoughtful about what we're doing. Remember, no matter what
- 25:53challenges you may be facing, keep hoping, praying, believing and
- 25:57trusting and do not give up. And finally, let's return
- 26:01to our weekly game of guess who here is the
- 26:04prompt again. I am an R and B singer born
- 26:08in Canada on July eleventh, nineteen ninety six. I wrote
- 26:12poetry and did theater as a child and eventually developed
- 26:16a YouTube channel. My debut single helped me earn the
- 26:19Grammy Award for Best New Artist in twenty eighteen. Who
- 26:24Am I? I'm Melesia Karra. Did you get it right?
- 26:30Let's play again next week. This concludes the reading of
- 26:35the Breathet Advocate for news from Jackson and Breathett County.
- 26:39Your reader has been Beth mc lean. Now please stay
- 26:42tuned for continued programming on radio. I on behalf of
- 26:46everyone here. Thank you for listening, and we hope you
- 26:49have a good day.
