- 1:17So here Now is the Fandom Chase Matter, Part five from Hollywood.
- 1:22It's time now for Johnny Della New Orleans. Please, Johnny, how's that
- 1:30when you call? Lieutenant? I think I've got a new lead on the
- 1:33whereabouts of Tom Chase. I could use a new lead, a roomy least
- 1:37under the name of Tom James. Remember that giant paper we found in the
- 1:41waste basket. Sure stuff he tried to burn after he took off in a
- 1:44hurry the night of Freddy Quintenna's murder. We could make our two numbers written
- 1:47one scrap of paper, twelve and twenty three have been able to figure out
- 1:51with the me though neither had I until I happen to look at the Harbor
- 1:53News in the newspaper. Yeah, you think those numbers could refer to a
- 1:57ship sailing? If you're twenty three at twelve o'clock, Maybe could, Johnny?
- 2:02Sure could be. I go to work on it. Maybe I have
- 2:06something by the time you get here. Welleten and I'll be there in sen
- 2:07minutes tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey, in the transcribed Adventures of
- 2:20the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigators, Truly
- 2:24Johnny Dollar. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location, New Orleans to the
- 2:44Home Office Universal Adjustment Bureau, Hertford, Connecticut assignment the Phantom Chase matter expense
- 2:50account continued. It Am sixteen a dollar fifty cab from my hotel the police
- 2:59headquarters in the office of Detective Lieutenant lafav I got some my boys working on
- 3:05ships. Allen's Jenny trouble is, we're not sure what date we want.
- 3:07Well, the twelve means noon to midnight. Peer twenty three is a pretty
- 3:12busy place. Has been several departs in the last few days. Freddy Quintana
- 3:15was killed three nights ago, about ten thirty at night. Could be the
- 3:19departure time was midnight that same night. Could be. And that's a line
- 3:23we're taking. But of course that's assuming that Tom Chase, ellis Tom James,
- 3:27was the one who murdered Freddy Quintana. Oh, everything points that way,
- 3:30Lieutenant Look. Tom Chase was the junior partner in the New York investment
- 3:34firm of Everson and Chase. He embezzled one hundred and twenty thousand bucks,
- 3:38jumped as Bale, and disappeared Bez Liz necessarily killer Johnny. Matter of fact,
- 3:42the two types are usually quite different, sure enough, But the big
- 3:46kicker in this deal is why Tom Chase went sour in the first place.
- 3:49A man who changed as completely as heated in one direction might go all the
- 3:53way it's happened before. Of course, his wife Lola and his senior partner,
- 3:57George Everson, were pretty shocked at the thought tom at a bezzel the
- 4:00money. They couldn't understand why a man like he was would do what he
- 4:03did, either could I until I found out I was a woman who rented
- 4:06a room for him here in New Orleans. How did Miss Chase take that
- 4:11news? Oh, I'm pretty hard. She's still here in New Orleans.
- 4:14No. I talked to her into returning to New York. I just didn't
- 4:17want to see her get hurt anymore. She probably shouldn't have come down here
- 4:20in the first place. Well, that's what I told her, that there
- 4:24was nothing she could do here. But what it boiled down to was she
- 4:28just wanted one more look at her husband. You see, after he was
- 4:31arrested in New York, he refused to make a statement, wouldn't even talk
- 4:33to her about it, refuse to see her at all. So she thought
- 4:38if she could see him again, he might have some kind of explanation.
- 4:41Yeah, But as it turned out, she was just asking for another kick
- 4:44in the face. How can a man explain another woman? That's a good
- 4:48question. Personally, I hope I never have to answer one leg When I
- 4:54see what happens sometimes in the marriages, I run up against I'm glad I'm
- 4:59single, Liz, You and I have tangled with the wrong kind of people
- 5:01most of the time. You can say that again, Freddy, Quintana sure
- 5:04fit into that category. That name brings up problem, Johnny. We're basing
- 5:10our belief that Chase skipped town, that those numbers on the scrap of paper
- 5:14mean a ship saying, and we're basing all that on the assumption that Chase
- 5:16killed Quintana. Right, You must remember that Quintana was a bad boy.
- 5:21There are plenty of people who like nothing better than knock him off. But
- 5:25why at that particular moment, all the tenant the timing adds up to Chase.
- 5:30After I traced him here to New Orleans, Quintana contacted me. He
- 5:33said he could deliver Chase for a price. He showed me a sample of
- 5:36Chase his handwriting he's swiped from his room. It was genuine, all right.
- 5:41Then Quintana winds up dead in an alley before he can deliver Chase.
- 5:44How else can it up? Look, Johnny, I'm just mentioned impossibilities.
- 5:47You're right, Chase is the probability. Yeah, well, let me get
- 5:56that down, all right, I have it. Thank They locate the ship.
- 6:02Yeah, they're being star left at midnight the night at Quintowner's murder from
- 6:06here twenty three right destination Trinidad by way Havan and Haiti. And there is
- 6:11a Tom James on that passing your list. You know, hunch was a
- 6:14good one. Let's see if I could get a plane out of here this
- 6:15morning, I might be able to intercept the ship at Haiti. Hey,
- 6:18could your cable the authorities there and request them the hole Chase if I don't
- 6:21make it at times, you're glad to the just many Johnny, you expecting
- 6:29to call them New York? Oh yeah, I put one under George Everson
- 6:30Chase, a senior partner a little while ago. Here it is go ahead,
- 6:33thanks, Hello, this is George Effson in New York. They told
- 6:38me it's your hotel that you were at police headquarters. You were wondering why
- 6:41Chase and Bessel the money from your firm, mister Everson. I still can't
- 6:44understand it, mister Dollary, Well maybe this will help. We found out
- 6:49that his hideout here in New Orleans was arranged for him by a woman.
- 6:53A woman. Oh no, and according to the rental agent, quite a
- 6:57woman. Oh good, Lord to think, does Lolan all of this?
- 7:00Yes? I talked her into returning to New York. Good she should never
- 7:04have gone down in the first place. Of any leads on Chase's present whereabouts?
- 7:09Yeah, just turn one up. It looks like he's traveling under the
- 7:12name of Tom James on a ship to Trinidad. Trinidad, right, But
- 7:15if my luck holes, he won't get farther than Haiti. Expencer, Count
- 7:23Adam seventeen one hundred and thirty four dollars and forty cents transportation from New Orleans
- 7:28to Port our Prince, Haiti. The flight only took a few hours,
- 7:30but to me the plane seemed as slow as a truck. But then as
- 7:33we came in over the harbor at Port of Prince, I could see it
- 7:35was going to be a dead heat. The boat was just entering the harbor.
- 7:40By the time I got to the dock, they were just putting the
- 7:42gang way over. Nobody'd come ashore yet. I had Chase's stateroom number from
- 7:46the passenger list. Okay, empty, real empty. Oh well, what's
- 8:05the trouble here? What's wrong? Ohs was that you just broke in the
- 8:09door? Yeah, here's my card insurance investigator. But really, mister Doller
- 8:13the door, worry, don't worry. I'll take care of it right now.
- 8:16I'm more interested than the man who used to be behind the door.
- 8:18He was going under the name of Tom Jane. Oh yes, mister Jane.
- 8:22Where is he? I'm afraid I wouldn't know, now, Love,
- 8:24this is no time for games, person. I don't know where he is.
- 8:28I came aboard just as the gang way went down. Nobody could have
- 8:31come ashore. Do you mean here at portou Prince? Wait a minute,
- 8:35are you trying to say he got off at some other port. Our first
- 8:37stop Havannah. That'd be two days ago. That's right, mister dollar.
- 8:41Oh well, that's just great. I'd bust my neck to meet the boat
- 8:43for nothing. Look, so we got off in Havana. You have any
- 8:48idea where he was heading? None whatsoever? Well, that just about doesn't
- 8:52He did ask me where the airline's office in Havanah Airlines Office, thanks expense
- 9:00account, I out a eighteen eight dollars and forty cents long distance call to
- 9:03the Havana Police Department. They put me through to a lieutenant Escobar. Hey,
- 9:09look, Lieutenant Escabar, I'm an insurance investigator from the United States,
- 9:11the United States, but the operator said you were in Haiti. Well yeah,
- 9:15that's right. You see. Well let that go for a moment.
- 9:18I'm after a fugitive and I'm beszler named Tom Chase, also known as Tom
- 9:22James Chase James. Yes, I wonder if you'd check the airlines at Evanna
- 9:26and see where he bought a ticket to then call me collect. I thought
- 9:28he was going to Trinidad, so I came as far as Haiti, where
- 9:31I found out here he got off an Havana, Trinidad, Haiti, Havana,
- 9:35Senor, if you will permit me, you sund a little confused.
- 9:37Yes I do, Senor. It's because I hear. There was nothing I
- 9:43could do after that except sitting porta Prince and twitter my thumbs. I wasn't
- 9:48all sure i'd be hearing from Lieutenant Escobar again, or if I did,
- 9:50whether he'd have a lead for me. But two hours later he called back
- 9:54and he did about your friend, Senor James or Senor Chase. I'm not
- 9:58sure which. Let's not start that routine again, Lieutenant James will do see
- 10:01two days ago the Senor James by the plane ticket here in Havanah where two
- 10:05Barbados Barbados see the British West Indies. Yeah, I know where it is.
- 10:09Oh, brother, he really gets around. Now, let me see
- 10:11if I have this thing straight. Signor, you thought he was going to
- 10:15Trinidad, so you went to Haiti, well, but instead it came to
- 10:18Havana, so he went to Barbados. You see, No, Senor,
- 10:20I am sorry, but it still does not make sense. Don't worry about
- 10:24it, Lieutenant Escabara does to me. Just accept my thanks for the lead.
- 10:28Someday I'll sit down and write your letter about it. Right, I'm
- 10:33nineteen one hundred and forty three dollars transportation and incidentals from Haiti to Barbados.
- 10:37From the air, look like a beautiful spot. Pastel colored houses with pink
- 10:41roofs, clean sandy beaches, gentle waves. Yeah. I could see Chase's
- 10:46point in coming here a good place to get away from it all, particularly
- 10:50with one hundred and twenty thousand dollars to keep you company, and more particularly
- 10:54when what you're trying to get away from is a couple of assorted charges like
- 10:58embezzlement, and murder. But if I thought that finding Tom Chase, save
- 11:03as Tom James, would be a cinch, once I got to Barbados,
- 11:05I was sadly mistaken. It was a bigger island than I'd realized, about
- 11:07one hundred and seventy square miles, and Bridgetown was quite a fair sized city.
- 11:13I checked into the hotel and made the rounds of all the others inquiring
- 11:16about Chase, but I got nowhere item twenty one dollar two drinks while I
- 11:22brooded in the hotel bar over the fact the trail had gotten cold again.
- 11:28But by the time I got that through my head, I saw the prettiest
- 11:31sight I encountered all day. A girl, and unless I was very much
- 11:35mistaken, she was heading for my table. You're Johnny Dollar. Sure,
- 11:41eh, I'd like to talk to you. Thank you? See right?
- 11:48Please? You're looking for somebody, aren't you, mister die? Am I
- 11:58anybody in particular? Yes, let's call him Tom James. Oh what about
- 12:03him? I know where he is? Who are you? Connie? Connie?
- 12:09Who? Connie's enough? So you're the one? Huh? What do
- 12:13you mean? Well, I knew Chase wasn't traveling along. Yeah, I'm
- 12:20the one. One thing. I don't get what why you're doing this?
- 12:26If you're Chase's girlfriend, you want out? Maybe? Yeah, I want
- 12:31out? So you deliver Chase to me. What do you want for it?
- 12:37Money enough to get back to the States. That might be arranged.
- 12:41Just one thing. What is it? The last person who tried to turn
- 12:45Chase over to me got himself killed back in New Orleans. You better be
- 12:50real careful. I will now look. There's a bar down near the waterfront
- 12:56called the Trade Winds. Know what I can find? It? Be there
- 12:58about ten. Chase will be with me. Two things, mister don what
- 13:03are they? Don't let onto him? How you found him? Okay?
- 13:07What else? Bring the money? Connie left and I sat there, basking
- 13:13in the walk and warmth of a trail that had suddenly heated up again.
- 13:18At quarter to ten, I went down to the waterfront. I spotted the
- 13:20Trade Winds bar down the street of Block or so. I waited. Pretty
- 13:24soon I saw Connie go inside. I started for the entrance. Then suddenly
- 13:30I realized I was being followed somebody acrossed the street in the shadows. I
- 13:33whirled and hid it for him fast. It took him by surprise. He
- 13:35ducked down an alley, then into a warehouse on a pier. I eased
- 13:41after the door. It was dark inside, but I went in then too
- 13:46late. Out of the corner of my eye spotted somebody beside me in the
- 13:48dark. Something hard hit me over the right ear, knock me to my
- 13:52knees. Yeah, I'd finally caught up with Chase the hard way. Now
- 14:13here's our star to tell you about the next exciting episode of this story.
- 14:16Next, a small fishing boat at deserted island and a man waiting there for
- 14:20me, A man with a gun join us, won't you Yours truly,
- 14:26Johnny Dollar? Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is starring Bob Bailey, is transcribed in
- 14:37Hollywood. Written by Robert Rife, It is produced and directed by Jack Johnstones.

- 14:54on Monday Night or another exciting episode of this story on Yours Truly Johnny Dollar.
- 15:01Roy Rowan speaking welcome back. Well, we will pick up the story
- 15:58in week two on Monday. I have to say that already Johnny's had to
- 16:03run about quite a bit. As I said, we'll find out whether he
- 16:07gets his man. I do kind of wonder why he wasn't in touch with
- 16:11the cruise line before or the ship. It doesn't say it was a cruise
- 16:17ship. Why wasn't in touch with the ship before it got to Haiti?
- 16:21It definitely has a high price on the old expense account. All right,
- 16:25Well, on to some listener comments and feedback regarding yours truly Johnny Dollar and
- 16:33Laurie comments. I'm loving the cereal. I really like that they took the
- 16:40time to get the names correct, the Rincone, Nagolis, Santa Rina mountains,
- 16:45et cetera. And the case is interesting too. Well, I'm glad
- 16:49you enjoy it. And the Johnny Dollar cereals can be broken down into those
- 16:53that make up a place. Usually it's because they're portraying something negative about the
- 16:59place and they don't want to get into trouble in that way. But there
- 17:03are some that are very true to life and researched. In fact, I've
- 17:07read about, though I've not actually heard some episodes were actual stations that were
- 17:14CBS affiliates actually played into the case. So we've got a lot of interesting
- 17:19times ahead on that regards. And then a comment from Toronta one of my
- 17:25favorites yours truly, Johnny Dollar, and those were both on episodes from the
- 17:30Primrose Matter. Well, now it's time for us to continue on with Manhunt
- 17:37and the clue of the Crimson Corps man Hunt, the clue of the Crimson
- 17:45cart that led to man Hunt. No crime has been committed, yeah,
- 18:02no murder has been done. Yeah, no, man Hunt has the gun.
- 18:12Yeah. Hey, wait a minute, Joe, Let's take a look
- 18:21at the store window. It terrific. Let me go my sleeve, all
- 18:23right, will lord? Yeah it is nice winter sports huh yeah see laughs
- 18:30and sure hands the snapping and started. Yeah, look at that one,
- 18:33will you huh? Take a look at that model and she's almost real.
- 18:36I wish she was. Hey, Tom, what time is it we gotta
- 18:38take? You know, girls ain't gonna wait all day. I can't just
- 18:44see a car skid at that ball. I asked you before, what time
- 18:48is it? Let's see just noon? Well, come on, come on
- 18:51with late Hey, but I feel like to have one of the sport I
- 18:52said, I could read. Hey, Joe, I want the matter.
- 18:56Look what's playing there right in the middle of the window display only Max.
- 19:02Look at the blood, all of them, and the knife ticking out of
- 19:04his back. Oh Max, a murdering last skindle at hyen. An unseen
- 19:14murderer has done his deadly work, and the blood of a human being now
- 19:18mixes with the artificial snow of the window displayed. Who will know where to
- 19:22look for the murderer, who will unmad? The unknown killer, who will
- 19:29start the man hunts man hunts, and the clow of the crimson corp Let
- 19:49me see? Uh uh No, I'll take him. Not at seven points?
- 19:53Oh what am I playing to and running with you for? I'd like
- 19:56to know? Are you sure you haven't put some chemicals in your laboratory on
- 19:59the back to the car so you can read them. If I could do
- 20:02that, I wouldn't be spending my time in the police laboratory. Would I've
- 20:04had with that? No, dude, you wouldn't. But that's a third
- 20:07straight game that he's won. I wish you had a nice fresh murder to
- 20:11work on it instead of sitting here during time. You wait right here and
- 20:15I'll go out and shoot somebody. Come on, old man, deal in
- 20:18our car. Great grow well, Bill Martin, a homicide sergeant in Preston.
- 20:22I want to take a Handell, I want to take a hand,
- 20:23he says. No, I don't want to take a hand. I want
- 20:26you to lend me a hand. All games over that? What is it?
- 20:27Bill? What's that? One of these days someone's gonna get killed and
- 20:30they'll be finger prints and something we can trace. Today ain't one of them.
- 20:36We get a murder drew, but a lulu. That's what we've been
- 20:37waiting for. What's the story there? What's the story? He says,
- 20:41There isn't any stories. That's the trouble, you know, liscense department storm,
- 20:45sure that on me. Yeah, And a dozen people are looking in
- 20:48their window all the time. Get a half hour ago, a corpse suddenly
- 20:52grows on the floor of the window and nobody saw how it got there.
- 20:56But that's impossible, impossible, he said, Sure, it's possible, except
- 21:00for one thing. It happened to happen to take it easy in Flower Belle,
- 21:03all right, Look, a fellow named Fred Satley was saved in last's
- 21:08windows. Nobody saw it happened. Yet one minute there was no court there
- 21:14and the next minute there was. All we know about Sattle is there was
- 21:17a he to a room in the James Hotel in his pocket. Nothing else
- 21:22that will happen. Wow, oh that really sounds like something. Let's go.
- 21:25Let's go, he says, I'm going up the last If you're saying
- 21:27here, do I yells you going back to your seeing rama games? So
- 21:30I need to know a little while. You know, it looks like we're
- 21:34ordered to continue playing room. Maybe I get revenge now for those three games
- 21:40I love. Never mind the James pat We're going to the James Hotel.
- 21:51But he was only here one night, no baggage or anything. Huh,
- 21:55And I was on duty when he checked into all his parator is a portfolio.
- 22:00What did the belif want? But please don't know yet. Oh I'll
- 22:03take it might be something. Hello, why you're on the phone? Where
- 22:10are the purpose? Well? You see me? You know you wasn't doing
- 22:14with someone else. But my governmnt is prepared to much more for the plan.
- 22:19Well couldn't we meet somewhere and talk this over? Hello? Hello,
- 22:25Hello, said the wrong thing they hung up. Hey, yes, missus
- 22:32Stanley, this is a police calls. Please check the record and see if
- 22:36missus Stantley made any outgoing calls when he checked in last night, and get
- 22:38me the numbers. Oh yes, sir, I had his card right here.
- 22:41I know said there are no outgoing calls on his car. Thanks,
- 22:45i'd be if they made any call, mister Stephens, Yes, I hope
- 22:48they're worth well. This is really a prize murder. Not only don't we
- 22:52know a thing about the murderer, but we don't even know anything about the
- 22:56victim. Hey, look what you're going. I'm sorry if one not something.
- 23:12I want to know something about this case. That's what I wanted to
- 23:15tell you. If we don't find out anything at lasts, you can pack
- 23:18up. You know, this is the first case where an unknown man is
- 23:22murdered in the storm window with a dozen people looking on and nobody saw a
- 23:26thing. God, you'll find a way out through you always do. It's
- 23:30always the first time for everything, Pat, and this looks like it.
- 23:33I don't know, Pat. Those three words describe every single angle of this
- 23:37case. H Here we are, okay, Pat, hop up here.
- 23:41You can't fast there. Oh sorry, mister Cheeves, I didn't know what
- 23:45was you? Okay, Marthon? Do you want to do it at this
- 23:48corner? Yeah? Sure? Since ten mis morning, say Marson, was
- 23:52there a fire on the block at noon, or an auto smash up or
- 23:55something that would find the crowd together? Or for nothing? You see?
- 23:59If there then an accident or some sudden excitement that would draw the attention of
- 24:03anyone standing in front of the window and give the murderer a chance to get
- 24:07the body in. Oh well, everything in this case leaves up a blind
- 24:11alley. Why should this be an a set off of it? Maybe allowed
- 24:14that car or an explosion at sometimes? Oh kind of a loud noise?
- 24:18I remember about then when a car skidd turned in the corner. Huh what
- 24:22kind of a car? Big green today? Rhode Island license flee? How
- 24:26did you get the license number? That might be somethink? Thanks Martin.
- 24:30Sorry, how about with your legs? After all? Right, I'm going
- 24:37into Losses to talk to Bill. Do I go with you? I have
- 24:41a job to you. Get back to the office and get on telephone.
- 24:44Check every midtown hotel garage and who defined one that has a big green to
- 24:48Dan with a Rhode Island license. Rhode Islands a small up state. It
- 24:51can't be more than a couple of cars at max sass assistance. I'll get
- 24:53the owner's name and hotel room. Will you be back after you talk to
- 24:56Bill. No, I'll call you. Maybe I'll drop in. But he
- 25:00was only around the corner. Now, hurry, well your pat Okay to
- 25:03win Marrison here? Sure, okay? Heard Martin's into the spree window with
- 25:08the dummies. There's a gag there somewhere. Hello, Bell, what are
- 25:18you doing in the window? Huh? What am I doing in the window?
- 25:21He says, I'm muddeling a new box player. What are you doing
- 25:25here? I think thought i'd dropped in and see if I could help.
