Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / NASCAR is Off To Its Best Start in 20 Years | Coffee With Kenny

- 0:03Happy Monday morning to everybody sitting here by the
- 0:08swimming pool. Can you hear the water running?
- 0:17No, it's alright. Alright.
- 0:20Uh, Monday morning after the incredible successful night that
- 0:27NASCAR and everybody had, all of us at Bowman Gray, who could
- 0:33have ever thought that it would have been that perfect last
- 0:38night? Sunday night, Charlie Marlowe
- 0:41and myself, we went on the Kenny Wallace YouTube show live and as
- 0:49we were talking and communicating with the vans, we
- 0:53realized it's been a long time. I, I, I, I deemed it the best
- 0:58start for NASCAR in 20 years. And of course, here's why.
- 1:07It was the best start for NASCAR in 20 years and here's why.
- 1:12First of all, the playoffs, the NFL playoffs were last week and
- 1:19and that was it. And we know that the Kansas City
- 1:21Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, we know that's our Super
- 1:24Bowl match up. So guess what was going on this
- 1:28week? That's right, nothing.
- 1:32NASCAR hits a home run with the date.
- 1:37There was nothing going on. And Fox, Fox TV, they continue
- 1:44to deliver. They are, they are the place
- 1:47that, let's just face it, all the racers are there.
- 1:50The broadcast was out of this world.
- 1:53You got Kevin Harvick. Yeah.
- 1:56You know, Clint Boyer. I really like that.
- 2:01Jamie McMurray is an incredible addition to the broadcast.
- 2:05He is well spoken. He's got it all together.
- 2:11And then, of course, Mike Joy just knows what's up.
- 2:14He, he's not a guy you got to teach anything about.
- 2:17He just knows what's up, right? And they put this baby, they put
- 2:21this Bowman Gray race right in prime time.
- 2:24I mean, this race got over. It was over and it was like
- 2:29what, 8840 in, in St. Louis, MO?
- 2:35I don't always look at East Coast time, right?
- 2:37But it, it was over like at 9:40.
- 2:41It was over at 9:40 on a Sunday night.
- 2:44The the Grammys went longer, let's put it that way.
- 2:47The Grammys went longer and they're on their own little, you
- 2:53know, they're on their own little island out there in LA.
- 2:56The Grammys are. So as far as sports go, NASCAR
- 3:01was number one for the whole darn, whole darn weekend.
- 3:08One thing that was also a home run was the the Modifieds.
- 3:13You, you, you tied the local crowd in, you know, and and
- 3:19listen, I want to tell you right now, when I say things, you
- 3:22know, I don't, I don't say them perfect and I say them like that
- 3:24on purpose. So you can respond right here.
- 3:28I said, now remember, there's only 5000 people in the
- 3:32grandstands at Bowman Gray. Well, there's a handful of you
- 3:36that were so excited to correct me.
- 3:39And sometimes I do that stuff on purpose to let you all play and
- 3:43see if you're paying attention. And right away, there were
- 3:46several people. Herman Bowman Gray holds 17,000
- 3:50people. I'm like, that's right.
- 3:54So that was one of the smallest crowds in modern day history.
- 4:02So NASCAR, this is a lesson in psychology, everybody.
- 4:06Bowman Gray Sunday night, the Clash, the cookout clash, one of
- 4:13the smallest modern day crowds in history at 17,000 people, and
- 4:19it might as well been 100,000 people.
- 4:23It it, it's just like a good restaurant.
- 4:25You can't get in. Don't make, don't make more
- 4:28restaurants. Just keep it small and make it
- 4:30hard to get in. So that race, the date was
- 4:35right, the venue was right and NASCAR got lucky.
- 4:39Are you kidding me? 1st of February and they pulled
- 4:43it off. Everybody was cold, but you know
- 4:46what? There was no rain for all these
- 4:49reasons. That's why I say the best start
- 4:55in 20 years for NASCAR. All right, so the, the, the
- 4:59modifieds, they do really good on, you know, Saturday, you tie
- 5:05in the local crowd, the local crowds there, you know, hell of
- 5:10a race there. Fleming wins, you know, they 2
- 5:14locals going at it for the win. They had their natural, you
- 5:18know, wrecks that Bowman grade, the football stadium, Bowman
- 5:22Gray's a football stadium and they decide to race around.
- 5:27NASCAR has not raced there since the 70s and one would have
- 5:33thought, OK, back in the day, the cars didn't have any
- 5:36horsepower. It was OK, the track was OK, But
- 5:39then you know the sport, you're thinking the sport outgrew it.
- 5:42So they left because we needed to put more than 17,000 people
- 5:46in the grandstands so to make room for people to watch these
- 5:51races. History repeats itself.
- 5:55They go back and it it was just all feel good.
- 5:58Now, another reason this was the best start to NASCAR history,
- 6:07the seven time most popular driver won Chase Elliott.
- 6:13We had a little debate last night and Charlie Mahler myself
- 6:19you were talking about, I always say we don't have any superstars
- 6:22in the sport except Denny Hamlin.
- 6:25And I believe that because Denny just said, you know, Denny was
- 6:28controversial again this week in a good way.
- 6:32Danny Hamlin said, I don't believe.
- 6:34I think it's a gimmick that NASCAR's having this provisional
- 6:38for these world class drivers. There you go.
- 6:42That was a good sound bite. Had everybody talking.
- 6:45You hear what Denny Hamlin said. Denny Hamlin said it's a
- 6:48gimmick. They shouldn't have any
- 6:50provisional. Elio Castroneva shouldn't get a
- 6:53provisional. He's a big boy.
- 6:54This is the big sport now. I'll respond on that a little
- 6:59later. I don't want to get sidetracked
- 7:00here. We're talking about why this was
- 7:04the best start for NASCAR in 20 years.
- 7:06And I just picked 20 years because it could be 30 years.
- 7:10It could be the best start for NASCAR in 30 years.
- 7:13Respond right here. Chase Elliott wins and somebody
- 7:19said, well, Kyle Larson's he he, he's a game changer.
- 7:24He's our superstar. And I looked at him, I said,
- 7:28listen, I like Kyle Larson more than you do.
- 7:31And you know that Kyle Larson invited me out to the high limit
- 7:36race and I was out there for Kyle Larson and Brad Sweets.
- 7:40So I don't want to hear it. I'm good friends with Kyle
- 7:42Larson. But if my friend Kyle Larson is
- 7:46so famous, why doesn't he win a NASCAR most popular driver?
- 7:52The bottom line is, is the fan base we got, they're still
- 7:56living. Listen, Dale Earnhardt Junior,
- 8:01his number 8 Budweiser souvenir trailer for his Late Model, his
- 8:06souvenir trailer's on display at the NASCAR.
- 8:09I mean, they're selling souvenirs for Dale Junior.
- 8:11He's not even racing and everybody's still living through
- 8:17awesome Bill from Dawsonville Whale.
- 8:20The thing of it is, and on top of it, Chase Elliott delivers
- 8:25and wins the race. So for once we all go back home
- 8:30and it was a hell of a race. Of course, the last chance
- 8:35qualifier went the way we thought it would go.
- 8:37Desperation, dive bombing, wrecking each other, you know,
- 8:42and, and it was really cool to see Kyle Larson come from mid
- 8:46pack and win that race. But it was even cooler to see
- 8:49Josh Berry, local hero for The Wood Brothers right up the road,
- 8:55finish second in that last chance race and make the big
- 8:59show. So do you see what I'm saying?
- 9:02All the stars started aligning. The Wood Brothers, The Wood
- 9:05Brothers, they ran Bowman Gray all the time.
- 9:07They, they made the race. Their new driver, Josh Berry
- 9:12made the race. All right, everybody, we'll keep
- 9:16it right there. But today's coffee with Kenny is
- 9:21just about why that race was so good.
- 9:23There's a lot more to talk about.
- 9:26There's a lot more to talk about it.
- 9:28Should the race come back next year?
- 9:31Should have we caught on to something?
- 9:34Have we caught on to something? Does the Clash go around to all
- 9:39local short tracks now? Is that even viable?
- 9:44Can we, can we take the soft walls away from Roman Gray and
- 9:49put them in Hickory? It costs millions and millions
- 9:53of dollars to put soft walls up, and that's what the insurance
- 9:57regulations call for. Now, if you're going to have a
- 10:00Cup race, you got to have soft walls.
- 10:04I don't think it's going to happen.
- 10:07If it happens, I'll be shocked. But but to say take it to
- 10:12Hickory next year, hold on. I mean, I know NASCAR's got all
- 10:17the money in the world, but is it just that easy?
- 10:20Because these soft walls, I'm going to say this, listen, these
- 10:26soft walls at Bowman Gray, they were the same soft walls that
- 10:31they used from the LA Coliseum. So they they saved millions of
- 10:36dollars. I listen, I want to see it at
- 10:39Hickory too. And then the next race, I want
- 10:43to see Florence, SC, so on so forth.
- 10:49Maybe like the SRX series, but it's February, so you got to
- 10:53remember whether you cannot say, bring the class to Berlin
- 10:57Speedway up here in Grand Rapids, MI simmer down February
- 11:03in Michigan. So you got to think about a lot
- 11:06of things. But I can tell you one thing,
- 11:10NASCAR has had the best start in 20 years.
- 11:13So we take a break. Let the Super Bowl go.
- 11:17Now. Let's let let's let the Super
- 11:20Bowl do their deal and then we come out with a Daytona 500 on
- 11:26February 16th. Until then, I'm gonna grow my
- 11:29dirt car tonight out of Lucia. So I'll see you all out of Lucia
- 11:33night. Happy Monday, everybody.
