Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_02: We're on with one of my favorite people in boxing,
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: one of the smartest people,
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: one of the best fighters I know,
- 0:06SPEAKER_02: Eddie Croft,
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: a real OG,
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: a guy who fought everybody of his era and will still run it into your gums
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: if you say the wrong thing.
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: Eddie, how you doing?
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Great, Lukie, how are you?
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: Real good.
- 0:17SPEAKER_02: And by the way,
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: B Street Boxing and San Mateo,
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: you definitely need to stop by there because you can really learn how to fight
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: and Eddie's got a lot of knowledge.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 0:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's a non-paid advertisement.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: But let's now get into this.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Ryan Garcia, he's fighting Conor Benn.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: I don't really care about the fight,
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: but I do care about the insight of Ryan Garcia can get hit with a right hand.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: I personally don't think it's as easy as it is to hit him with a right hand.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: You are the person that knows boxing.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: Break this down for me.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: How easy is it to hit Ryan with a right hand?
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: It's not easy.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: And the reason why is...
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Yes, he does stand up tall.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: And yes, he is straight up like a stick.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: But he keeps his left hook loaded and ready to just whip out.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And it's really fast and has a lot of snap, right?
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: So because of that, he can throw it from different angles.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: He can throw it coming towards you.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: He can throw it leaning away from you.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: So he's really perfected that.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So it really makes you keep the right hand at home if you're smart.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The people that have tried to,
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: okay, you know what, I'm going to try to beat them with the right hand.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: They've paid for that, right?
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: They paid for it dearly, catching left hooks on the chin.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: The two guys that gave them a hard time, other than Roley, right?
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: But Devontae and Luke Campbell...
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: They're both lefties, and they caught them with, you know, like left hands.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So that is, you know, and they're keeping their front hands up to protect from that left hook.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And that's really, really the difference.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: So I kind of think of Ryan Garcia as a messed up Tommy Hearns.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: He kind of reminds me of like a King Cobra snake.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: Is that a fair comparison, or do you think he's more flawed?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: I think he's much more flawed than...
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I think Hearns had a much better overall game.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Especially, you know, coming from Kronk and Manuel Stewart.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Hearns is an all-time great, right?
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Hearns is an all-time great.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: So, you know, you comparing Ryan Garcia to Thomas Hearns Is giving Garcia a lot of credit.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Not that he doesn't deserve it, but it's still too early to say right now if he does deserve it.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: I get what you're saying.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: I guess I'm saying in terms of guys that don't sit down low,
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: they stand a little taller to derive power.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: It's just Burns was more a combination puncher.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: I think he was more deadly.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: He could punch at more ranges.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Ryan has to catch you from outside to that mid-range, I feel.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I've seen Brian hit people with short hooks,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: like kind of when guys are coming in, you know, catch them with the hook coming in.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Just like a little like check hook, like not quite a check hook, but something similar to it.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Hearns definitely could, you know, fight at more ranges.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: He was definitely better at long and mid range.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And if he connected with,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: The straight right hand or, you know, a mid-range right hand, that would be curtain.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: It's curtain for you, right?
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: The one person that he caught flush with a right hand that didn't go down was Hagler.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: And, you know, Hagler's chin was, you know, made of kryptonite or something.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: I think that was also, like,
- 4:02SPEAKER_02: John Pullman always tells me,
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: like, there's some guys that on some nights decide they're not going down.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: And I think Hagler made a decision on that night, I'm not going down.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Or anything.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: We just saw that with Hergovic, right?
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Hergovic made that decision.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: He's like, I'm just going to take this one on the chin, and it paid off for him.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know,
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: that's funny because someone asked me about that fight, and I said, you know what?
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Hergovic can get through the first four and a half, five rounds.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: He has a great chance of winning.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he'll win the fight,
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: so I'm not going to say that I picked him,
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: but I really thought that if he can get through the early part of the fight,
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: that's And he had a good chance of winning.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: So back to Ryan, is he trying to bait you into landing this right hand?
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Like, is that a story?
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Is that a goal?
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: because, I mean,
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: he has different ways of setting it up, but that is, that is his bread and butter.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: he's like,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: we'll stand up and kind of like show you his chin and he's trying,
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: he wants you to throw that right hand so he can hook over it.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Um, Who else was it?
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: The way he does it, he throws a shorter hook.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Just like you, I don't want to compare Ryan
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: to an all-time great right now or to a great.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Much like when Nonito knocked out Montiel, And Montel threw that right hand.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Nonito caught him with the left hook.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: The right hand kind of grazed Nonito.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: And Nonito caught him with that hook right in the temple.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Similar to that.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Ryan Garcia wants you to throw that right hand.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: He's like, go ahead and throw it.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: I dare you.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: I dare you to throw it.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: And if you take the bait, he usually can make you pay.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: Is there like a mindset there where he's like, I can beat you to the punch?
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: Or is he like deceptive and setting traps at his ranges?
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Um, it's a little of both.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Um, I mean,
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: and that's the thing,
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: you know, Ryan's,
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: won a lot of fights and got to where,
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: and people say, you know, people would like discredit him and say, he's not good.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: And you don't get to that level if you're not good.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: Um, With the amateur pedigree that he had and all the pro fights and the people
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: that he's beaten as a pro, if you're not good, you don't do that.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Part of it is that he's setting you up and he's looking for it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: He's setting you up and yes,
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: he's laying traps and just throughout the course of the fight,
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: he's getting your timing and You know,
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: showing you different looks of, you know, his body positioning.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: And like, OK, let me see.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Let me see how close I can get to you before you try to fire this right hand.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: And you fire your right hand and he'll like, OK, I think I can catch you with the hook there.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: And he'll kind of keep playing with different distances until he lines up the one that he wants.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, a lot of times he catches guys that way.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: Let me use another expression from the OG Bobby Benton
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: where there's only two punches, straight punches and curved ones.
- 7:32SPEAKER_02: And I think that Ryan does the toughest thing,
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: the Navarrete thing, where some of his curved punches come from the ground up.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: Do you think he does that and he obscures the eye where it's harder
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: to see those punches from the ground up in exchanges?
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, he will kind of shovel his hookup at times.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: And the thing about it is he throws a pretty good left hook to the body and
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: then will shovel it up from there.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And that was the thing when he fought Luke Campbell.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, Luke's going to get him.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And I said,
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: you just got to kind of slow down and quit trying to fire that left hand all
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: the time.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: You're just trying to kill him.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: You just got to slow down,
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: take your time,
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: really tuck in your elbows and line up good shots before you start firing him.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: If you just go crazy, you're going to give Garcia, time to come back.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: And then,
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Garcia caught him with that body shot,
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: boom, and shoveling up left hooks to the head from that body shot.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: So, yeah, yes,
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: he does kind of like will hide it,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: throwing it in an upward motion because,
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: you know, that left hook to the body is lethal, too.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: I learned about that with Navarrete and Ruben Villa.
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: I thought in a million years,
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Ruben would never lose to Navarrete,
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: and it was those darn punches from the ground up.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: It's like those tricky, awkward shots.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: I can't... Well, I don't know why his name is slipping my mind right now.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: The kid from Africa that was an Olympian that Navarrete beat for the title.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: Isaac Dogbe.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: I didn't...
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: I also didn't think that Navarrete would be Dog Bay when,
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: you know, because I didn't know who Navarrete was, but then I saw that.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I was like, oh,
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: this guy's like awkward and strong,
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: and he throws punches that shouldn't hit anybody,
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: but they are landing and they land with force, right?
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: So sometimes,
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: guys with that awkward style and,
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: a lot of like strength,
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Can can really negate like just a lot of good technical skills.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: I'm hoping I would go visit my guy Shock Foster for his camp with Navarrete.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: I'm curious to see how he trains because I really like Shock's mindset and I respect Navarrete.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: And I think this might be the camp to visit.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: Like, what do you think when a fighter goes into a high level camp like that?
- 10:00SPEAKER_02: Is that the one to go see?
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: I would like to see Foster, how he prepares and gets ready to fight.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Is he in training in Houston?
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Houston, yeah.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: I know he does 1,000 push-ups a day.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: 1,000?
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: Or something like that.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's pretty gnarly.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: That's pretty crazy.
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: 1,000 push-ups.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know people that do 1,000 sit-ups, but 1,000 push-ups is a lot.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: The thing I've heard about him,
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: I've never seen him in the gym, is that you have to pull him back.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: He's one of those guys where you got to tell him do less.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: He'll overtrain.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: Leave him to his own devices and he'll do too much.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: He's a bad dude, though.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: I have been very impressed by him.
- 10:45SPEAKER_02: High IQ fighter,
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: but I think the thing that impresses me the most about Shock is he took a couple
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: of losses and he never got down on himself.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: He got back to the, you know?
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: it's funny,
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: he took some losses and,
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: you think that, okay,
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: they're going to put him at the end of the line and he's going to kind of fade away,
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: but he just was not letting that happen.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: So here's the rest of the once a week podcast.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: Let's go through some of your questions.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: I have an internet issue, so this is going to be in multiple parts.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: Also, for those listening, try to tell me if my audio sounds better.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: I'm working with an audio engineer and hopefully this sounds better.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: What was the criticism about Ben Davison for Fabio Wardley and Jamie TKV?
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: I don't trust any boxer with Ben Davidson.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: Maybe only Shabazz Musad up to the domestic level.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: So, so far in the chat, Moses Atoma's coach, Ben Davidson, is getting harsh criticism.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: I think a lot of the criticism, too,
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: comes from the fact that he's a young guy who got vaulted into a dream job position,
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: which is basically celebrity trainer, genius, boxing aficionado.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: About seven years ago,
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: at a fairly early point in his life, he got basically in this high profile position.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: Wardley not throwing in the towel quick enough.
- 12:07SPEAKER_02: He's also been criticized for throwing it in too soon.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: TKV.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: He trained out of Davidson's gym for his victory against Clark,
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: where he nearly stopped him in the championship rounds.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Are we just ignoring Fury, Taylor and Saunders and other fighters without the issues?
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: I thought your initial point was a trend across divisions.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: Some divisive comments going back and forth actually in the comment section
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: where some people are really defending Davison and saying this is an Atoma issue or
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: a certain one.
- 12:37SPEAKER_02: And Wardley and Fury, two heavyweights who hadn't had stamina issues.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: He also trained Lee Wood.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm not denying that he's very suspect for sure, but he did a superb job with Lee Wood.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Went from losing to Jazza Dickens to winning the world title twice.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: Did a great job at getting the final.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: I watched that at a Kareem Mayfield media day in Fillmore, which is in San Francisco.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: It's where Kareem's from.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: And I watched it with Jeff Reel, who's a good boxing coach and a dear friend of mine.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: And Jeff and me were very impressed with Parker in that fight.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: Maybe I should go back and watch it.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Let me know in the comments section if you'd like me to do a watch along.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: That might be really boring,
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: but I could do a watch along and maybe do a live stream watching the fight
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: or what have you and score the fight, etc.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: But I remember that being like a 7-5 fight and that being a fight that really kind
- 13:44SPEAKER_02: of ruined Joshua's confidence
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: because he was getting basic punches were getting parried and he didn't have
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: that ability to just be reckless.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: Ben Davidson was also with Pat McCormick.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: Pat McCormick's name always trips me up because I went to middle school with Pat McCormick.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: So we see a trend across weight divisions of a lack of stamina.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Also in the comments section, Zurgreb is the capital of Croatia.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: So I mean, growing boxing should include expanding into UK non-USA markets.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Look, I think that we need to expand to wherever people are winning
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: because that's how you get the growth.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Are we underrating Hergovic?
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: It's important to consider outside factors.
- 14:23SPEAKER_02: For example, wasn't Hergovic knocked out on his feet versus Dubois?
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: And Dubois fought with Well,
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's, I think that's a little dismissive of what Dubois did in that fight.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: In that match, Hergovic said later he was sick.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, guys always say things like this,
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: so I'm not going to fully, and this was when his father died.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: If you listen to the post-Itama match interview,
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: you can see how much the death of his father impacted Phillip.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: If you're going to credit someone like Arnold Barbosa Jr.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: for doing just enough to win, then you should treat Hergovic the same.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: We're treating Atama like a video game character.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Hergovic is not a boss in a Nintendo game.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: If Atama did something different, Hergovic would also do something different.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: People are claiming that Atama should have just boxed from round three and won
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: a unanimous decision.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: I disagree with that because I don't think it's in Atama's nature to do that.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: I don't think he could.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: As if Abel Sanchez and Hergovic are imbeciles who do not know how to count.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: If Atama boxed from round three,
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: Hergovic would have still turned up the pressure at some point from round eight,
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: and he would have selectively turned up the burst in round three to seven.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: What they are missing is that Atama has fast hands, but he does not have that power.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: What happens to boxers without power in a 12 round match?
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: Well, I think with Atama is what happens to boxers who are very explosive and rely
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: on speed, quickness, and that in turn.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Creates the power.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: And when that starts to slow down,
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: because we've never seen someone who's quick and explosive for 12 rounds in
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: a sustained fashion.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: How do you get to the 12 rounds with that style?
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Because you're going to dramatically probably slow down.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: And then all of a sudden,
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: I think your opponent's going to gain confidence when you're not there.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: I think it's troubling for Atama, right?
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: Because Hergovic, yes,
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: I think he's getting probably underrated,
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: but I think there's another thing I can't help but see is for eight rounds,
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: he was dramatically losing a fight.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: For eight rounds, he was not really that competitive.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: He was taking shots, but he was staying in it.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: He was showing toughness and he was showing a will to compete.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: And then Atama...
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Slowed down.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: He slowed down from an inability to really pace himself, inexperience, so forth and so on.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: And then Hergiv gets the stoppage.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: I don't really see him.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: I see this win more so,
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: and maybe I'm going to be wrong, but the way I see it is like Kambosis beating...
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Teofimo Lopez.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think Kambosis did, had a more emphatic win in that sense.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: But to me, it feels like Hergivik probably won't ever win.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: This is just me talking right now.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: We'll never win another high profile fight,
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: but because he beat Atama,
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: he's always going to be like a really big name going into it.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: But like against Kabayel, I don't see it being all that competitive.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, I think Dubois is a bad matchup for him.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: And those are like the top guys.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: And Frank Sanchez,
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: I think,
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: is a really bad matchup because I think Hergovic,
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: his feet aren't going to be able to keep up with him.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: But look, he's put himself in a position where...
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: He's worthy of the shot to see where he sits in the division.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: So give him that and credit him that.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: Rewatch the match and listen to the corners advice from Abel Sanchez.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: After the early rounds,
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Sanchez tells Hergovic to wait for Otama to gas out or Otama is gassing out.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: Well, Abel's the man.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: Abel is a good coach.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Sanchez might have also advised Hergovic to do a little more to help Otoma get there.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: So that is what I meant by the game plan was to wait for Otoma to gas out.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Hergovic also said later that Otoma didn't have power.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: It looked worse than it was.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Even the round two knockdown was just Hergovic touching to maintain his balance.
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that like the issue with Otoma really reminds me of Jared Anderson
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: and Edgar Berlanga.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Where there was real fear based around what they were capable of doing.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: And then once that fear isn't around as much anymore,
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: it's going to be hard to get it back, right?
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: Remember when Jared Anderson came out as the Grinch and he did the thing
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: and he beat up, I think it was Jerry Forrest.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: And it's like, wow, this guy's super cool.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: And then life moved on.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: You know,
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: because Jared's never really been able once he once he started fighting those full
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: sized heavyweights.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: I think that's another thing that we didn't really touch on
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: that much is Bergovic is pretty much the first near prime.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: He's a modern heavyweight that Atuma fought, you know, that wasn't like washed.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: And that was an issue for him, you know.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: But I think the thing was,
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: there was real belief that Atuma could win a fight like this and make a ton
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: of money.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: And instead,
- 19:19SPEAKER_02: he lost a fight like this,
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: and now he has to dig down deep,
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: and his confidence has to recharge quickly,
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: and he has to prove that he is a championship merit fighter who can get
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: the job done.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: More questions.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: I was telling you Zufa would get Vlad Panin a stay busy match next.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but his stay busy match could be an F around and find out.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: He's taking on Dakota Linger.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: And I don't really love Dakota Linger for anybody that we're not fully invested in.
- 19:50SPEAKER_02: I know Vlad is a pretty solid fighter.
- 19:54SPEAKER_02: Um, Dakota Linger,
- 19:55SPEAKER_02: obviously he's,
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: he's famous for his knockout wins over Kurt Scobie and,
- 20:01SPEAKER_02: uh, obviously stopping Josue Vargas.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: I think he's the last person to stop Josue Vargas.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: I think after he stopped Josue Vargas, Josue Vargas never fought again.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Josue Vargas has been inactive for four years and essentially is a retired fighter
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: at this point, I would say.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Vlad's losses in his career come to Brian Agustin Ariguayo split decision in 2025,
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: which not a great loss on paper.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: And then before that, Moises Fuentes.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: So he's lost to guys who I wouldn't say are outstanding fighters.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: He's on a little bit of a run.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: You know, he has a big win over Chouinard Bunche.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: That's a pretty good win, but super bad Vlad has a real kind of crossroads fight.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: I don't see this as a stay busy fight,
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: but I've been really off probably because I'm probably not as engaged
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: as I should have been in boxing.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Lukie, you really need to stop falling for propaganda.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry, guys.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: First, Isaac Lucero.
- 21:06SPEAKER_02: Although,
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: to be fair,
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: Lucero wasn't as much propaganda as I was in the gym with Bob Santos watching Lucero
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: and I was impressed what he did.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: And then you fell for Alan Chavez, written as Alan Sanchez, but I get it, Alan Chavez.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: Chavez, you know, that was more so...
- 21:26SPEAKER_02: I remember Miguel Maduno from Thompson Boxing Shows,
- 21:30SPEAKER_02: and I really remembered him as a durable guy.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: I knew we gave Keyshawn Davis rounds,
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: and for a guy to knock him out in a few rounds really stood out to me.
- 21:39SPEAKER_02: And I was just shocked at his inability to understand lateral movement.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, it looked like he was tricked and duped and deceived
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: by just very basic lateral movement.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: To put it frankly,
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: it's shocking that someone could have a performance at such a high level with
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: a knockout that was so exciting and then basically look like a fighter who is
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: a six-round novice fighter in his neck.
- 22:07SPEAKER_02: I'm expecting him to weigh in over 290 pounds in a few hours.
- 22:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, Dave Allen, for those that didn't see, there was a fight with him and Thomas Carty.
- 22:15SPEAKER_02: It's the fun, the big guy in the bar fight.
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: We love a big guy in the bar fight, brother.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: And what ended up happening was they clinched.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: Dave Allen hit him.
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: Some people say it was to the back of the head.
- 22:41SPEAKER_02: Some will say it's to the temple and just look like Cardi went out on his feet.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: Allen moved to turn him to break up the clinch and Cardi appeared to be out there.
- 22:50SPEAKER_02: And just fell through the ropes, fights over, just really disappointing.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: Fight we never have to see again.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Put one of them in with Moises Atuma next, and the other one can go to another prospect.
- 23:02SPEAKER_02: Not that great.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Now we got the legendary film study.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: Abel...
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: Abel Gonzalez, how does he box?
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: And Raul Solomon boxes.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: Solomon just to come for a boxer.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: Let's look at these highlights.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: I'm checking out.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: I think this is Daniel Blankus.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: And Blankus,
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: for those that don't know,
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: when I first started at ProBoxTV News in August 2022,
- 23:26SPEAKER_02: which is basically a little over four years ago.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: Shout out to that.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Blancus was one of the guys who was there on the Pro Box TV up-and-comers.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: He kind of fell by the wayside along with Jacob Gomez-Zayas.
- 23:45SPEAKER_02: Those two kind of just disappeared.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: But Blankes is someone that I did get familiar with early on.
- 23:52SPEAKER_02: He felt like the third era of the tall super middleweight.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: It's like you got Benavidez,
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: you got Diego Pacheco, and then it felt like Blankes was the next one.
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: Okay, so let's...
- 24:02SPEAKER_02: I've been doing enough talking.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: Someone's got a nice looping overhand right from the pocket, and that's Daniel Blankus.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: So with Solomon, what I'm noticing is it's a low punch output, a high guard volume.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: He comes in square,
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: but he's pretty good at protecting himself, and he's going to punch with you.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: So he's not going to be tricky.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: He's going to be tricky to a certain extent because he's going to force you
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: to either engage with him And to punch with him.
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: And he will punch with you.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: But he's coming forward.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: I think he's more than just a come forward fighter because he's got balls,
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: but he's able to block shots.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: So.
- 24:46SPEAKER_02: Really, it's about his durability,
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: because a guy like this can only be durable for so long, right?
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: Because.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: Every fight is going to be a hard fight at the world class level for Raul Solomon.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: But Daniel Blancas is a pretty good fighter.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: And Solomon's given him a really, really hard fight here.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: You know, Blancas is having to show a little bit of everything and he's having to fight back.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: And really exert a lot of energy for kind of a guy that you might look at
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: and be like, okay, this is a gatekeeper type opponent.
- 25:16SPEAKER_02: And Solomon in many ways, it just looks like he doesn't quite have the tools to win.
- 25:21SPEAKER_02: It looks almost like he's freestyling,
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: like he just goes, kind of trains himself or he has a buddy.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: And maybe he's gone to some really high level camps,
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: but it seems like he's lacking that one little thing.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: He knows how to survive,
- 25:34SPEAKER_02: but he doesn't necessarily know how to win rounds,
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: which makes him kind of a good test for up-and-comers in this position.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: But the dangerous thing about him is he's able to stay in that mid-range.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: He's able to block punches and he'll throw punches back and not everybody's comfortable.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: And he throws punches in combinations, especially when guys get on the ropes.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: And that's something a lot of young fighters aren't used to.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: And he does like he'll throw a jab.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: He throws a good right hand there, but he'll throw untraditional combos.
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: He'll lead with the left hook.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: And when you put yourself on the ropes, he's a Mexican fighter.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: That's the big thing I was always taught in the gym was Mexican fighters.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: When you go to the ropes,
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: you got to be careful because that's where 99% of their stick is,
- 26:18SPEAKER_02: is when they get to the ropes.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: So when you get to the ropes, it looks like Solomon throws a lot more punches.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: Pretty physical hombre, to be honest.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: Let's go back to this.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: So, okay.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: Tyler Howard versus Raul Suleman.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: I think this was a, so this is the OTX Boxing,
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: OTX Boxing 2.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: So we're going to see how this goes.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Tyler Herk Howard.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: Texted Bobby Benton.
- 27:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, Solomon's a pretty good fighter.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: You know, he's just like one of these guys that probably had to stay in a boxing gym.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: He had to take hard fights because he just didn't have the financial path
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: to not take hard fights.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: Like if he was going to be a boxer, he had to take hard fights to stay in the sport as a pro.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: He didn't have the backing to do it.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Let's see.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: Looking because it says saved by the bell.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: Let's see.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, Suleman is a...
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: I would say he's more than a come-forward fighter.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: He's a puncher.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: He's a little bit of a puncher because both Blankus and Tyler Herc Howard is
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: a real puncher, too.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: And it seems like Herc is kind of boxing a little bit, too.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: So this is a puncher.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think...
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Let's see, I'm looking for the knockdown here.
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Let's see the comments.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: A lot of people in the comments feel that Solomon should have won the fight.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: Okay, here's another one.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Let's see, another piece of tape on him, Raul Solomon.
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: A Marv Nation fight card.
- 28:35SPEAKER_02: Looks like he's the A-side with Marv Nation.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Whatever happened to Marv Nation?
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Seems like they disappeared.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: So basically he's, Raul Suleiman is like an A-side level regional fighter.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: Who, when he moved up, couldn't quite win the fights.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: But he's real physical tough.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: And he probably has heavier hands than you expect.
- 28:54SPEAKER_02: I'm not going to watch this Marv Nation card.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Because he's too strong and too big.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: And this other guy's just outgunned.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: And it's just him walking the guy down.
- 29:05SPEAKER_02: Let's see what we got with Abel Gonzalez.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: I believe Abel Gonzalez.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: And I'm going to double check this.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: I believe he's with Keith Conley.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: So let's check this.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: So if that's the case...
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: He is with Keith Conley and Ryan Rickey.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: So he's someone that you would think probably is on the card
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: because Connor Ben shares the same manager and it's a big opportunity for him.
- 29:29SPEAKER_02: So this is fight against Robert McGee.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: And the first thing I'm noticing about...
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: Abel Gonzalez is he has faster reflexes.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: So he's like, he jabs, he gets off the line, he does stuff.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: But the one thing I'll notice here with him is he jabs,
- 29:45SPEAKER_02: he gets off the line, but he can't combination punch.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: So early on,
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: his temperament is jab,
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: get off the line,
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: look to counter, look to counter, look to counter, look to counter.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: Okay, I've seen enough of the first round.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: Let's go into the middle rounds.
- 29:57SPEAKER_02: See, still the third round, no combination punching.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: He's very much a fast, quick,
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: reflexive fighter who wants you to initiate and he wants to pick his shots like
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: a sharpshooter in exchanges.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: Could be really good for Raul Suleman or it could be really bad
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: because guys like this go one of two ways.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: They either become concussive punchers who do really good or they get outworked.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: I'm sure that having a manager like Keith Conley,
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: the word on the curb is that he's really, really done something impressive.
- 30:28SPEAKER_02: Because to have a manager like that, you have to have done something that means something.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: I can see now in the fifth,
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: he's physically breaking down McGee, and he's not really even breathing hard.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: So he's just able to break a guy down pretty patiently.
- 30:46SPEAKER_02: Just the thing that stands out to me in this fight is the lack of combination punching.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: Okay, let's see.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Al Santon, let's see.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: This is a Pro Box TV card.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: I probably covered it, to be honest with you.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: I probably covered this one live.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: I bet you if you look in the archive, I covered this one live.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, he just had too much...
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: There's not much to take from that.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: He just has too much power and...
- 31:14SPEAKER_02: Okay, so he's got the Mondo Boxing on.
- 31:17SPEAKER_02: One thing I'll notice here in the training footage that I got sent
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: on Mondo Boxing is when he throws some of his jabs,
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: he doesn't extend the jab all the way.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Let me see.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he kind of like pushes the jab.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: He kind of pushes it and it doesn't straighten.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: I don't know if that's an intentional thing.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: He really throws a nice left hook.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: He turns it over.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: But I don't love his jab.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: That's kind of interesting.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: It seems a lot like his style is all about reflexes, though, when I watch it.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: Like he's throwing a lot of one punches at a time.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: Looking for shots.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: He's looking to fit punches in windows.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: It doesn't, like when I even see him doing mitts, he's like looking to land one punch.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: He's not even, like when he throws combinations, they're kind of slower combinations.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: He's more deliberate.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: He's also working out in the middle of a field too, which is interesting.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: He's not a combination puncher.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: He can throw a good right jab, cross,
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: but he's like a guy that wants to keep his distance and he wants to punch with you.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: That's my initial feeling on him.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: So there's my breakdown of that matchup.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: Let's go to the next one.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: What do you think of a Basperau versus Giovanni Santillian matchup is going to come down to?
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: Have the two knockdowns broken Santillian's chin?
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: Is Santillian any more than a regional Thompson Boxing boxer who was in
- 32:39SPEAKER_02: the right tights at the right time?
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: Is Santillian physically big enough for 154?
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: So I also have some tape study to watch,
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: but I'm going to give my initial thoughts on this matchup right away.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: My initial thoughts are...
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: I think Abbas Burrell is probably a different level at this point.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: I think Giovanni is a really nice guy.
- 32:59SPEAKER_02: I think when he went to that camp with Floyd Mayweather to mimic Manny Pacquiao,
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: he was truly an exciting prospect.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: That is probably 11 years ago now, right?
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: So it's like he's one of these weird guys
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: where it's like his whole career has been Essentially him as a prospect or him
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: as flying under the radar.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: His moment to really,
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: really shine was when he knocked out Alexis Rocha in a fight that I think a lot
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: of people looked at as Alexis Rocha's crowning moment and
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: then Alexis Rocha got annihilated.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: And then in his crowning moment,
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: basically the roles reversed and Brian Norman knocked him out badly.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure if you guys caught it,
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: but his fight against Courtney Pennington earlier this year was not
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: a very strong performance.
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: I thought he won it, but he lost enough rounds where there were major concerns for me.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: The big thing about Burrow is he's patient to a fault.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: He's a good combination puncher.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: The question is, was the Yoannis-Teliz fight...
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: Who he is?
- 34:04SPEAKER_02: Or is that just the one night I was really on, I was focused and I had a great performance?
- 34:10SPEAKER_02: And then every other night I'm going to try to rekindle that magic, but I might not have it.
- 34:15SPEAKER_02: That is what I'm wondering.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: I do have those same questions about is he...
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Is he at 154 because of that's his weight class or is it because it's really,
- 34:26SPEAKER_02: really hard to get to 47 now and we're just going to do it just
- 34:30SPEAKER_02: to see what we can land in terms of marketable fights.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Let's look at this.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: I remember Dakota,
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: when we did the podcast, was like, why are we even talking about this fight now?
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: I think after what Crawford's gone on to do, people would be like, what were they thinking?
- 34:55SPEAKER_02: What were they doing?
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, early on,
- 34:58SPEAKER_02: the thing about Rocha that's weird,
- 34:59SPEAKER_02: and Rocha also fights this week,
- 35:01SPEAKER_02: and I'm going to do film study on Rocha in a little bit, is Rocha...
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: Rocha early in his career was a power puncher, kind of a pressure fighter.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: And then after the Rashidi Ellis fight,
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: Rashidi was just able to really trick him and confuse him.
- 35:14SPEAKER_02: And he was unable to answer very simple questions in the ring with a slick mover.
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: And in this fight, Geo just kind of bullies him.
- 35:25SPEAKER_02: And Geo's traditionally known as a boxer,
- 35:28SPEAKER_02: but he just, from the early onset of this fight, just walks down Alexis Rocha.
- 35:34SPEAKER_02: And Rocha is prone to get into slugfests.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: You know, he's prone to get himself into kind of these, like, wars.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: I think against Raul Curiel, he probably overachieved and was able to do it.
- 35:47SPEAKER_02: But it's like Giovanni is standing chest to chest with him and Rocha feels like
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: at times gets emotional and And is willing to punch.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: And Gio like almost knew something that like, okay,
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: if I just sit in front of him and keep my hands up,
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: he's going to give me moments to land.
- 36:05SPEAKER_02: And it's like, he just overwhelmed and kind of punked Rocha.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: And it's Rocha's initial thought was kind of like, I'm not going to back down.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: I'm going to fight you.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: And it basically made the fight harder and harder because the way Giovanni was fighting him,
- 36:21SPEAKER_02: He basically just walks him down the whole fight.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: It's like it's a performance that I had never seen Giovanni do before in his career.
- 36:30SPEAKER_02: And then we're in the third round.
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: I think we're easing into the knockdown.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: But it's just this is this is so dominant.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: It's like Giovanni looks like Eric DeLeon basically in this fight.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: Just a come forward pressure guy.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: See, is this?
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: No, it's the fifth round.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: This is a knockdown.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: Like he hits him.
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: The thing that's crazy about this fight is Rocha has decent hand speed,
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: but he makes Giovanni look like he has amazing hand speed.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: And in the fifth round, he lets off like a Ray Leonard five, six punch combo.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: And Rocha is bleeding and busted up and he's been punked and all this stuff.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: And he gets up and he's like,
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: dude, I'll So, yeah, I mean, this was just like a perfect performance from Giovanni.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: Now let's go to the next performance, essentially, which was Giovanni versus Brian Norman.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: The roles reverse.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: And...
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: I think it's important to also remember,
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: Norman basically fought the same fight that one of the guys I respect the most,
- 37:35SPEAKER_02: Eric Bonet.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Bonet fought Giovanni, and I think Bonet, in my opinion, won or got a draw.
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: He didn't get it,
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: but to me,
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: when I watched this fight with Norman versus Giovanni,
- 37:47SPEAKER_02: it was so apparent that That what Bonet did was something that Norman watched.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Because Giovanni's trying to walk forward.
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: First off, Norman's just physically stronger than Rocha.
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: And this is also a moment where Norman's like, dude, I want to change my life.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: Norman's got a lot bigger punching powder.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: But it's like when Giovanni gets Norman on the ropes,
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: which we also have said, Mexican boxers, that's their shtick.
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: Especially Robert Garcia fighters.
- 38:19SPEAKER_02: I feel like Robert Garcia has so many tricks when guys get on the ropes.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: And it's like...
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: Giovanni's hand speed against Rocha looked amazing.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: Norman's hand speed is so much faster than Giovanni's in this fight.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: And he's able to land big punches.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: He's angling.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: He's turning him.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: He's just basically frustrating him.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: He's keeping him off kilter.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: He's keeping him off balance.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: It's a very, very scary combination because he's different.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: I'm curious when the tide turns.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Giovanni's kind of like,
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: I think that Giovanni was like,
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: okay, against Rochide, I'm going to be a pressure guy.
- 39:04SPEAKER_02: This is going to be my style.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: I'm going to break guys down, this hometown fight.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: And he's putting Norman on the ropes more than I remembered.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: But the thing about Norman is he hits so hard.
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: He's like, okay, put me on the ropes.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: I'm going to hit you.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: I'm going to hit you good.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: And they were basically punching pretty evenly.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: When do the punches start adding up for Giovanni?
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, another thing to keep in mind about Giovanni is these fights are not easy fights.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: These are physical fights.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: So Norman's starting to wear down Giovanni in the eighth round.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: Giovanni is getting hit clean and he is not He's not coming forward as much as he wants.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: And then Mark Kriegel's scorecard 87-84 for Norman.
- 39:49SPEAKER_02: And then this is like the moments that your people are going to remember.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: It's the 10th round.
- 39:53SPEAKER_02: Giovanni's face is all busted up.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: It's a hard fight.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: And then Norman is just letting go of shots.
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: He's just boom, ripping.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: I think this is a career-changing fight,
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: to be honest with you,
- 40:07SPEAKER_02: because I think mentally,
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: Giovanni, at the time, most people didn't think Norman was an elite fighter.
- 40:12SPEAKER_02: And Norman came in and really demolished Giovanni.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: And I think to do this in a guy's hometown and
- 40:19SPEAKER_02: to mentally frustrate someone this way and take a title this way was just,
- 40:26SPEAKER_02: I think it really was a hard one.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: It was a hard, hard loss.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: Okay, so let's see a boss brow against Brian Chavez.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: I believe I saw this one live, Wasserman.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Abbas Baral is so different.
- 40:46SPEAKER_02: It's like Abbas Baral is closer to Abel Gonzalez, but maybe a better fighter.
- 40:52SPEAKER_02: He is waiting to counter the counter.
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: He'll come forward, but he wants you to punch, and then he's going to go.
- 40:59SPEAKER_02: He's going to go.
- 41:00SPEAKER_02: So he fights like a King Cobra Snake.
- 41:02SPEAKER_02: He's like, okay, you react, and then I'll go.
- 41:04SPEAKER_02: I'll go.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, the fight comes down to how Abbas Baral wants to fight.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: I think the thing that's scary about this fight is if Giovanni is going
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: to come forward, Burau is going to be so delighted.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: He has a little bit of that super amateur style where he's trying to time you
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: with rhythm and the way he steps to the opponent.
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: That can be both good and bad.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: But, yeah, I think this is going to be a tough fight for Giovanni.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: But the thing is, against John O'Donnell, right?
- 41:40SPEAKER_02: But Rao is not throwing that much.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: So it's like he exerts a ton of energy.
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: He's letting off foot feints.
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: But if you don't do much, he'll throw some punches.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: But he doesn't really work.
- 41:54SPEAKER_02: He doesn't have like the highest He wants this guy to throw his left hand.
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: So we can try to throw the right hand.
- 42:12SPEAKER_02: And when the guy just shells up,
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: he's like actually taking steps back because he wants you to come forward.
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: He wants you to feel safe.
- 42:19SPEAKER_02: And then all of his stuff that he works on, it looks like he works on comes from exchanges.
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: So if guys don't exchange with him, right?
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: He could have a hard fight like the way you probably want to fight a boss
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: for out is you want to go backwards and you want to kind
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: of give him 12 really boring rounds
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: where he feels like he might be having some success,
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: but he's losing every minute of every round where you what you don't want is
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: and I'm going to guess I don't remember this fight, but he's fighting Sam Egginton.
- 42:47SPEAKER_02: For those that don't know, Sam Egginton is a British boxer who just kind of was.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: He had a very basic understanding of boxing,
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: but most of his boxing knowledge was just toughness.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: He was like one of those guys, regional guys.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: Hey, mate, I'm tough.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: Puts his hands up and gets hit a lot.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: And against Eggington, it's like, first off...
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: Barrow, I think,
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: senses an urgency that I can't be as inactive because this guy might walk me down.
- 43:11SPEAKER_02: It might be a hard fight.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: But two, Eggington is going to punch, and that's going to allow Barrow to kind of do his stuff.
- 43:19SPEAKER_02: So I think this fight for me...
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: Can you preview Sean Garcia versus Abraham Morales?
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: Okay, there's first tape footage is Abraham Morales versus Francisco Tapia.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: It is an amateur boxing match from 15 years ago.
- 43:48SPEAKER_02: And it's uploaded by Francisco Tapia, so I'm going to assume...
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is so difficult to do film study on when I don't know who's who.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: I can't do it.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: But I mean, what I do know is...
- 44:02SPEAKER_02: Thank you for sending me that.
- 44:03SPEAKER_02: But what I do know is that he's been boxing for 15 years and that's pretty impressive.
- 44:08SPEAKER_02: Now, I do remember Sean Garcia versus Amato Vargas.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: I came back from Europe and was immediately on fight coverage for that on a Saturday night.
- 44:17SPEAKER_02: I was frigging exhausted and I covered this.
- 44:20SPEAKER_02: Amato won the fight via pressure.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: I think Sean was overweight.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: The thing with Sean Garcia is there's not really like an identity I see as a fighter.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: Like obviously he's in the shadow of his brother Ryan,
- 44:34SPEAKER_02: which I think is never really that fun for anyone.
- 44:38SPEAKER_02: And in this fight, it's like the punch output is low.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: He's not a very active fighter in terms of his professional boxing career.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: He's a southpaw.
- 44:46SPEAKER_02: He doesn't have the same dynamic hand speed as his brother.
- 44:50SPEAKER_02: I just don't really understand his identity as a fighter.
- 44:53SPEAKER_02: So he falls into this category of kind of a famous or notable fighter based
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: on his brother's standing in the sport.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: But I don't really understand, like,
- 45:03SPEAKER_02: if this was a video game,
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: Bernard Hopkins would be like a methodical thinker in the ring.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Golovkin, power puncher.
- 45:11SPEAKER_02: Terrence Crawford would be like a dead game finisher who has a lot
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: of different attributes of boxing skill.
- 45:20SPEAKER_02: Andre Ward would be the ultimate technician's technician.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know what Sean Garcia's archetype would be.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: And I think that's kind of a dangerous thing when you start getting
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: into these televised boxing cards when we don't understand...
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: What your identity as a fighter is, what your rubric is as a fighter, that can be tricky.
- 45:40SPEAKER_02: And in this fight, like Amado Garcia, or not Amado Garcia, I got the names confused.
- 45:44SPEAKER_02: Amado Vargas, sorry, Amado.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: Amado, nice guy too.
- 45:47SPEAKER_02: He just overwhelmed him.
- 45:48SPEAKER_02: He just said, okay, I'm going to set a pace.
- 45:51SPEAKER_02: You are not going to be able to match my pace.
- 45:53SPEAKER_02: And he didn't have the punch output or the conditioning to go.
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: So there it is.
- 45:58SPEAKER_02: And he lost, Sean Garcia also lost a fight to Sayung Ho Yang.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: I never saw this.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: So this is Triller Fight Club on YouTube.
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: And it's a lot of the same crap with Sean, to be honest with you.
- 46:17SPEAKER_02: He kind of puts himself on the ropes.
- 46:19SPEAKER_02: He's looking to land a straight left hand and a right hook.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: And there's a very low punch output.
- 46:27SPEAKER_02: So the thing with him is,
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: if you're breaking down any fight,
- 46:30SPEAKER_02: in my opinion, is he doesn't display dazzling power and dazzling hand speed.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: So if he's fighting a guy who's physically tough with a high altitude,
- 46:39SPEAKER_02: Every fight is going to be hard.
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: It's just going to be inherently tough because he doesn't really show
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: the cardiovascular training,
- 46:49SPEAKER_02: doesn't show the power,
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: and he doesn't show the speed to keep guys alert for all the For the duration of
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: a six round fight.
- 46:57SPEAKER_02: And I don't think,
- 46:58SPEAKER_02: I believe this is a six round fight,
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: but I don't really think he's beyond,
- 47:01SPEAKER_02: maybe he's an eight round fighter,
- 47:03SPEAKER_02: but he can't really go beyond that with this trait.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: He has to evolve.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: So that's my breakdown of that fight.
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: I think that's all the questions this week.
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: Thank you guys.
- 47:12SPEAKER_02: I hope you enjoyed the opening segment.
- 47:14SPEAKER_02: It was a different one this week and I'll talk to you soon.
