- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medore. City of St. John's has ordered a
- 0:08Speaker 2: problematic apartment building on Brazel Street in St. John's to close,
- 0:13Speaker 2: but they're saying tight-lipped on the reasons why. The property,
- 0:17Speaker 2: formerly known as Harborview Apartments, has been the site of
- 0:20Speaker 2: numerous police complaints and serious incidents over the years. Acting
- 0:24Speaker 2: on a property complaint earlier this month, Inspectors with the
- 0:28Speaker 2: City of St. John's and the Fire Department found what
- 0:31Speaker 2: are called health and life safety deficiencies. The City has
- 0:35Speaker 2: ordered that the building be closed until those issues can
- 0:38Speaker 2: be rectified. The City won't provide details on how many
- 0:41Speaker 2: tenants are affected, how they are being accommodated, or the
- 0:45Speaker 2: specific issues found. The City is not providing further information
- 0:50Speaker 2: on the situation at this time. A business owner in
- 0:53Speaker 2: Mount Pearl calling attention to the dangers associated with kids
- 0:57Speaker 2: riding motorized and pedal bikes through his parking lot after
- 1:00Speaker 2: a teenager crashed on the weekend, leaving him in hospital.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Justin French, the owner of French's Automotive on Park Avenue,
- 1:08Speaker 2: says they have traffic of all types, including big trucks
- 1:11Speaker 2: moving through the lot day and night. French posted a
- 1:15Speaker 2: video of an incident Sunday in which a teenager was
- 1:18Speaker 2: hurt after his front wheel separated. from his bike.
- 1:22Speaker 3: And that young fella got hurt. He's got multiple stitches
- 1:25Speaker 3: in his face. He's cracked off numerous teeth, you know,
- 1:29Speaker 3: face and everything all swole up. And one of the
- 1:31Speaker 3: things I'm, you know, and that sucks. Don't get me wrong.
- 1:35Speaker 3: You don't want to see anybody hurt any time. But
- 1:38Speaker 3: it could have been so much worse. If that little
- 1:41Speaker 3: guy had happened to go, you know, a foot and
- 1:43Speaker 3: a half to the right, he would have went right
- 1:45Speaker 3: in through one of our glass doors. And then I
- 1:48Speaker 3: sit there and go, oh my, what would have happened
- 1:50Speaker 3: to him then?
- 1:52Speaker 2: The Education Minister disputes a contention by the MHA, who
- 1:55Speaker 2: represents the Kenmount Terrace area, that the new K-8 school
- 1:59Speaker 2: in the sprawling subdivision will be large enough to accommodate
- 2:02Speaker 2: all students in the greater catchment area, including the schools
- 2:06Speaker 2: off Thorburn Road. Government has changed the eligibility parameters, reserving
- 2:11Speaker 2: the new school for those who live exclusively in the terrace. Initially,
- 2:16Speaker 2: students from outside the subdivision were to be accommodated at
- 2:19Speaker 2: the new facility But that plan has changed entirely. Education
- 2:24Speaker 2: Minister Paul Dinh says the numbers do not add up
- 2:26Speaker 2: as there are about 1,060 students in the region, but
- 2:30Speaker 2: the new school has space for only 860. However, housing
- 2:34Speaker 2: them in the newer neighborhood will relieve pressure on other schools.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Larry's Brook is an example where it was well over there.
- 2:43Speaker 1: numbers in the last couple of years. But now we
- 2:46Speaker 1: have room there that allows it to grow. Now, we
- 2:50Speaker 1: don't see it hitting the maximum, but there's room there.
- 2:54Speaker 1: There's room in St. Andrews. There's room in Prince of
- 2:57Speaker 1: Wales Collegiate. And, of course, Camelot Terrace has some room
- 3:01Speaker 1: to grow.
- 3:02Speaker 2: That's your newscast. I'm Brian Maddow.
