- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the UConn football coaches show. Jason candle
- 0:03Speaker 1: with us Huskies two and one, uh, first time since 2016,
- 0:06Speaker 1: a two in one start and their biggest margin victory
- 0:09Speaker 1: on the road since 2015.
- 0:12Speaker 2: So we're talking.
- 0:12Speaker 1: About decade of, uh, football games, uh, on the road.
- 0:16Speaker 1: First of all, that's 60 plus road games. That's pretty
- 0:20Speaker 1: impressive number, but, uh, coach, let's go to the D
- 0:22Speaker 1: for now. Cause, uh, defense came up with a couple
- 0:25Speaker 1: of nice turnovers, uh, INTs that, uh, really kind of
- 0:30Speaker 1: changed what was happening in that game. And Aslukman, that
- 0:33Speaker 1: was a beauty. And then Braden Moore, too. How important
- 0:36Speaker 1: are those turnovers? I mean, we always talk about plus
- 0:39Speaker 1: or minus in that category, but it always seems like
- 0:41Speaker 1: they matter a lot.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Well, we were able to affect the quarterback, and I
- 0:45Speaker 3: think we were able to get our hand on a
- 0:47Speaker 3: lot of passes. Got a couple tipped up in the air.
- 0:51Speaker 3: We didn't sack the guy a bunch of times, but
- 0:53Speaker 3: we got a bunch of hurries and a bunch of
- 0:55Speaker 3: pressures where we were able to put a little heat
- 0:56Speaker 3: on him and move him off the spot and make
- 0:58Speaker 3: him a little bit uncomfortable.
- 1:00Speaker 2: And, you know, I think when you're able to do that, you.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Can, you can really play really good defense. So that
- 1:07Speaker 3: balance that we were just, we were talking about earlier
- 1:09Speaker 3: on offense, I mean, every team is striving for that.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And when, you know, we were able to limit them,
- 1:13Speaker 3: take away the run game for the most part and
- 1:15Speaker 3: make it kind of one dimensional, you know, when you're
- 1:17Speaker 3: able to do that, you know, I think it does
- 1:19Speaker 3: speed the QB up a little bit. And we saw that,
- 1:21Speaker 3: you know, with us offensively a little bit against Maryland and,
- 1:25Speaker 3: We were able to do that to that guy Saturday
- 1:26Speaker 3: night by good defensive pressure up front. And then the
- 1:28Speaker 3: defensive backs doing a good job of getting their eyes
- 1:30Speaker 3: in the right place and covering the guys.
- 1:32Speaker 1: We've been talking a lot about the roster, obviously, since
- 1:34Speaker 1: you arrived and having to put together a team. And
- 1:37Speaker 1: Anas Lukman is a guy who wears number 15. He
- 1:41Speaker 1: transferred from Ohio, also played at Arkansas Pine Bluff. Finding
- 1:45Speaker 1: players like this, what kind of a job is that?
- 1:48Speaker 1: I mean, is it easier than we think or is
- 1:51Speaker 1: it harder than we all think?
- 1:53Speaker 3: Exhausting process. I still think there's, I mean, look, it
- 1:58Speaker 3: is what it is. I mean, that's the world we're
- 2:00Speaker 3: in and you have to be able to go and
- 2:02Speaker 3: first of all, you have to identify what you're looking
- 2:04Speaker 3: for and what you want and what you need. And
- 2:06Speaker 3: then from there, you know, you have to be able
- 2:09Speaker 3: to say no to some guys because there's a lot
- 2:11Speaker 3: of easy, easy answers and easy yeses that you could
- 2:15Speaker 3: bring into your organization. But if they don't fit who
- 2:17Speaker 3: the culture of your team is, you know, is and
- 2:19Speaker 3: what you're trying to build that to look like, it's
- 2:21Speaker 3: going to be a really hard off season, first of all,
- 2:24Speaker 3: which will lead to a really toxic season. So I
- 2:28Speaker 3: think our staff did a really good job of trying to,
- 2:31Speaker 3: you know, put the time and energy in the right place,
- 2:34Speaker 3: which it does require a lot in the long hours
- 2:37Speaker 3: to get this thing right. You know, there's year one,
- 2:41Speaker 3: we mean, my gosh, we had to bring in I mean,
- 2:44Speaker 3: if you count the freshmen in next year's class that
- 2:45Speaker 3: are already committed to us, I mean, we've recruited over
- 2:47Speaker 3: 100 guys in eight months, really. So, you know, it's
- 2:53Speaker 3: a different time in college football. But you still have to,
- 2:56Speaker 3: I think, recruit like-minded people and bring people around your
- 2:58Speaker 3: organization that think like you and want to be successful
- 3:01Speaker 3: like you.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to talk to Jaden Davis in a
- 3:04Speaker 1: few minutes. This guy is amazing to me. Fresno State
- 3:07Speaker 1: played 33 games there. He was there for four years.
- 3:09Speaker 1: He's a fifth-year linebacker. But he'll be describing to us
- 3:14Speaker 1: the process with you and him talking and texting and
- 3:17Speaker 1: all that stuff. And we hear a lot of this
- 3:20Speaker 1: from Dan Hurley and what he has to do in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the basketball world. I think, obviously, you have a tougher
- 3:25Speaker 1: job in some ways. You've got more guys you have
- 3:27Speaker 1: to do this with. How do you decide, you know,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'm going to spend time getting this guy to come east,
- 3:32Speaker 1: Jaden Davis, all the way from Fresno, California? You know,
- 3:36Speaker 1: at some point you probably say, I don't know, enough's enough.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I've been talking to this dude, but he hasn't committed
- 3:41Speaker 1: to us. What do you do in that case?
- 3:44Speaker 3: You're looking for a cultural fit first. You're looking for
- 3:47Speaker 3: somebody that you you know can, you know, look like
- 3:52Speaker 3: this is a two way street and a guy that's
- 3:53Speaker 3: got one year left to play.
- 3:55Speaker 2: I have no interest in that. It doesn't mean.
- 3:57Speaker 3: Zero favors to bring a guy here that is going
- 4:00Speaker 3: to have a miserable time and he's not going to
- 4:02Speaker 3: get out of it what he wants for his senior
- 4:04Speaker 3: year so maybe with a guy with one year it's
- 4:07Speaker 3: a little bit more of a delicate process and you
- 4:09Speaker 3: want to make sure you you really cross t's and
- 4:11Speaker 3: dot i's because you got to get that right.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Because nobody wins in that situation so um you know
- 4:17Speaker 2: you want to you want to do a good job you.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Know you know cultivating a relationship in a short amount
- 4:22Speaker 3: of time and then ultimately like once you figure out
- 4:24Speaker 3: that the guy's a fit for you and you feel
- 4:27Speaker 3: like he can be successful from, he can get his
- 4:28Speaker 3: feet on the ground and, and get acclimated to what
- 4:31Speaker 3: we're trying to do quickly. You know, eight, nine months
- 4:35Speaker 3: down the road, it's probably going to produce some good results.
- 4:37Speaker 3: And that guy will leave your program with a really
- 4:40Speaker 3: good taste in his mouth of, you know, what college
- 4:42Speaker 3: football was last college football experience, you know, is and
- 4:45Speaker 3: would have been, or will be.
- 4:46Speaker 2: So that's where it kind of starts from there. Obviously you,
- 4:49Speaker 2: you gotta get good players.
- 4:50Speaker 3: You gotta get guys that, you know, a defense that,
- 4:54Speaker 3: you know, that, they don't just bark, they tackle, they
- 4:56Speaker 3: go put their face on somebody and they get guys
- 4:58Speaker 3: on the ground.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And Jaden does that. You know, he's a, he's very mature.
- 5:03Speaker 2: He's an older guy.
- 5:04Speaker 3: He's very comfortable in his own skin. So leaving Fresno,
- 5:07Speaker 3: I'm sure is a little nerving for everybody. If you've
- 5:10Speaker 3: grown up there your whole life, becoming clear across the country,
- 5:12Speaker 3: but he's, he's adapted, you know, wonderfully and he's done
- 5:15Speaker 3: a good job of fitting into, you know, and making
- 5:16Speaker 3: some really good genuine relationships with the guys.
- 5:19Speaker 2: On the team. And he's a good player. So I'm
- 5:22Speaker 2: happy he's here and happy he's doing well.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Yeah, he's an experienced guy, as you mentioned. He's an
- 5:28Speaker 1: academic All-American in the Mountain West Conference twice. He played
- 5:32Speaker 1: in a bowl game, the famous Idaho Bowl game. So
- 5:34Speaker 1: experience does matter for you, right? When you're looking at guys,
- 5:37Speaker 1: obviously you're going to recruit young guys, some freshmen you
- 5:40Speaker 1: hope grow up, but you've got to find experienced guys
- 5:43Speaker 1: who've done it, right, to really get off and running
- 5:47Speaker 1: in any season, I would think.
- 5:50Speaker 3: It definitely helps. You don't want to take too many
- 5:52Speaker 3: one-year guys that don't have any experience. I mean, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 3: you're rolling your dice there on, you know, more times
- 5:58Speaker 3: than not, that's not going to end up well. So, yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 3: I think that you want guys with at-bats and reps and,
- 6:06Speaker 3: you know, videotape, but so does everybody else.
- 6:08Speaker 2: And that becomes who's got the bigger checkbook sometimes.
- 6:11Speaker 3: So I think that you have to have a clear
- 6:15Speaker 3: picture of what the vision is for your team in
- 6:18Speaker 3: all three phases. And then from there, Could a player
- 6:21Speaker 3: fit into that? And then at what price point does
- 6:23Speaker 3: that look like? So you sometimes you have to say
- 6:25Speaker 3: no to some good players because of what you have
- 6:27Speaker 3: to spend or, you know, you can't get them right. And,
- 6:31Speaker 3: you know, you don't want to just take and you
- 6:33Speaker 3: get what you get and figure it out.
- 6:35Speaker 2: And what was me?
- 6:36Speaker 3: You got to really work hard to make sure that
- 6:39Speaker 3: that that combination fits how it's supposed to fit.
- 6:44Speaker 1: All right, Jason Candle with us, and we'll be back
- 6:46Speaker 1: to talk a little Miami of Ohio. That's the next opponent,
- 6:49Speaker 1: the Red Hawks. On the road, Huskies have them next weekend, 3.30.
- 6:53Speaker 1: We'll start the pregame at 2 o'clock. Be sure to
- 6:55Speaker 1: join us. This is UConn's Football Coaches Show on Learfield.
