- 0:13Speaker 2: this last day of April, April thirtieth.
- 0:17Speaker 3: As our last day out here, which kind of kind of.
- 0:22Speaker 2: A sense of relief. But on the other hand, I
- 0:24Speaker 2: love being back here.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Justin Kalin's with me. TJ.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Walker is gonna be with us for a little longer
- 0:29Speaker 2: because I know he was with you this morning. Was
- 0:31Speaker 2: he with you the entire show? Or good the last
- 0:33Speaker 2: two segments? Okay, good last two segments. But as he
- 0:36Speaker 2: walks back in with a donut only for himself, what how'd.
- 0:40Speaker 4: You get that? You got that in there?
- 0:43Speaker 3: They were out there was like.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Six donuts sitting there when I went in there, How.
- 0:47Speaker 3: The hell did you get that? Thanks a lot.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Well, I went in there just to get a water.
- 0:52Speaker 5: Found no water, right, no water, but they did have
- 0:55Speaker 5: donuts out there. But it's a Salvation Army, so like,
- 0:59Speaker 5: you know, they want you to put.
- 1:00Speaker 6: A dollar in before.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and I didn't bring.
- 1:03Speaker 5: My wallet, so they they I got some looks. I
- 1:06Speaker 5: still took the donut, but we can split it. I
- 1:09Speaker 5: really just wanted to water else.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I I just want, you know, I don't want a donut,
- 1:15Speaker 2: but it would have been nice to have been offered.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Hey, Michael, would you like it?
- 1:18Speaker 5: It wasn't you know what, Michael donut?
- 1:23Speaker 3: See No, I'm there, you go No, I would never
- 1:26Speaker 3: know no past the donut. It's a hot potato donut.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Which but you don't. I don't eat sugar anymore, so
- 1:33Speaker 2: I don't do sugar.
- 1:34Speaker 3: So you just wanted to complain. I just wanted to complain.
- 1:37Speaker 3: That's good. But anyway, I listen.
- 1:42Speaker 2: I appreciate you coming on another few minutes with us.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Are however, listen, if you want to stay the whole
- 1:47Speaker 2: two hours, I'm happy. Nick Rouse said, I'll just do
- 1:49Speaker 2: a segment. Then he ends up staying the entire two hours.
- 1:52Speaker 3: That sounds, which was.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Fine, And I'm hoping you're the same way because I
- 1:56Speaker 2: love having you on. I love having Nick Grouse to me.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's a lot more fun when you know, not just
- 2:01Speaker 2: with Justin. But we haven't gotten to be around each
- 2:04Speaker 2: other that much.
- 2:05Speaker 3: I know.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I love your mom. I think you got the nicest
- 2:09Speaker 2: mom in the world. She kind of came up to
- 2:11Speaker 2: me one day and says, do you know TJ.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Walker? Of course I know TJ.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Walker.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I'm his mom, and I had a great time talking
- 2:19Speaker 2: to her. But she's such a sweet lady, and you're
- 2:20Speaker 2: a lucky guy. I hope you realize how lucky you are.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Take a huge bad timing, I know, Yes, I'm very sorry. Yeah,
- 2:32Speaker 2: but you know, in just a little bit we we
- 2:35Speaker 2: might even get a special guest on here, if I
- 2:38Speaker 2: can talk her into it.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Should we have?
- 2:42Speaker 4: I already know what you're gonna say, and that's not happening.
- 2:45Speaker 2: You don't think Patricia Bennett will come on the Okay?
- 2:48Speaker 2: All right, then, well absolutely not.
- 2:50Speaker 3: I think we need to try. At the very least
- 2:53Speaker 3: you can try.
- 2:53Speaker 7: But I haven't been married to her for thirty years,
- 2:55Speaker 7: and I'll tell you she will not come on.
- 2:57Speaker 2: I bet she says hello, and that's it. Weould there
- 3:00Speaker 2: be any question you would like to ask her?
- 3:03Speaker 3: Scoots?
- 3:04Speaker 7: Oh my god, thousands of questions that I would want
- 3:08Speaker 7: to ask her, but I don't know if any of
- 3:10Speaker 7: them are radio appropriate. Might have to be a private conversation.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Oh my goodness, Now you got me really worried. What
- 3:16Speaker 2: kind of a question are you asking that's inappropriate to
- 3:19Speaker 2: my wife?
- 3:20Speaker 4: That's just what I was trying to do, is worry.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Okay, I'm not worried at all. I'm just like, what
- 3:25Speaker 3: do you want to talk about?
- 3:26Speaker 4: So, I don't know. I would have no idea what
- 3:29Speaker 4: to ask. What would TJ ask?
- 3:31Speaker 3: TJ?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Would there be a question you would want to ask
- 3:33Speaker 2: my wife other than why did Michael Bennett block me
- 3:36Speaker 2: on Twitter for so many years?
- 3:37Speaker 6: You did?
- 3:39Speaker 3: It was unintentional, got unintentional.
- 3:42Speaker 5: You know a lot of weird things happen with your
- 3:44Speaker 5: social media, Mike, that accidental blocking.
- 3:52Speaker 7: That's probably what I would have to ask her. How
- 3:54Speaker 7: worried were you when that tweet came across the water?
- 3:57Speaker 7: That's Drudman over there. Louisville Games play tonight.
- 4:01Speaker 4: They do.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I see it.
- 4:04Speaker 5: I took my King's hat off literally right as I
- 4:06Speaker 5: walked out of the house.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, they're over there. Cool, they play all night. That
- 4:12Speaker 3: you have an interest in going to the game.
- 4:14Speaker 7: Uh, So, here's the thing I can't. I can't, and
- 4:19Speaker 7: let me explain it more so. I watched the first
- 4:23Speaker 7: three Kings games, oh and three. I have not watched
- 4:27Speaker 7: a single minute of the last two. And wow, I'm
- 4:32Speaker 7: the problem, TJ. I don't want to mess it up.
- 4:35Speaker 7: I know, I don't I just don't want to mess
- 4:37Speaker 7: it up.
- 4:38Speaker 5: I really wanted to go to the game tonight because
- 4:42Speaker 5: I think it's going to be a hilarious crowd. I
- 4:44Speaker 5: think it's going to be a pretty drunk crowd, and
- 4:47Speaker 5: it's gonna be I think it's just gonna be a
- 4:49Speaker 5: fun like be out in Louisville kind of evening.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I'll certainly be watching.
- 4:52Speaker 5: But we're actually going to a derby party tomorrow night.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Nice right, Well, you know how the the big parties
- 5:00Speaker 5: are on Friday night, brown Stable, the barn Stable Brown.
- 5:05Speaker 3: We're not going not going to that one.
- 5:07Speaker 5: We weren't the we didn't get that one, but I
- 5:10Speaker 5: am excited about it. We're going to the one that's
- 5:11Speaker 5: at Locust Grove. I think it's called like the Silk
- 5:13Speaker 5: Spash or something like that. So we get to dress
- 5:16Speaker 5: up and act like we're important for for an evening.
- 5:19Speaker 5: So well, so I think with us doing that tomorrow night,
- 5:23Speaker 5: I'm not going to go to the King's game tonight.
- 5:25Speaker 3: But you didn't get to watch the one the other night.
- 5:27Speaker 5: Did you see that everybody in the stands that were
- 5:29Speaker 5: Kings fans were wearing crowns?
- 5:31Speaker 6: Oh?
- 5:32Speaker 2: Yeahhi o, yes, that's gonna be a thing.
- 5:35Speaker 5: If I'm going to Lend Family Stadium, I'm wearing a crown.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Although do you all know the problematic issue with a
- 5:42Speaker 5: white male wearing a crown? Are you all familiar with
- 5:45Speaker 5: the Burger King airplane video? Okay, it's a classic viral
- 5:51Speaker 5: uh video, probably just online entirely too much. But there's
- 5:55Speaker 5: this old guy and he's on an airplane and he's
- 5:57Speaker 5: wearing a Burger King crown. He's very clearlybably intoxicated, and
- 6:01Speaker 5: he's just saying words that you never should say.
- 6:03Speaker 3: That you that you shouldn't say at all.
- 6:05Speaker 5: And now anytime somebody sees just an older man wearing
- 6:08Speaker 5: a crown, they compare him to the Burger King guy.
- 6:11Speaker 3: And that's what I think of when I think of
- 6:12Speaker 3: Lynn Family Stadium.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Now, that being said, should be a great crowd tonight, Bennett,
- 6:18Speaker 5: does this weather bother you at all?
- 6:20Speaker 3: Do you want it to be warmer for your derby?
- 6:23Speaker 2: Well, see, now you're gonna get me in trouble. Okay,
- 6:25Speaker 2: everybody's gonna make fun of me.
- 6:26Speaker 6: I mean.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Where I said it doesn't matter, okay, So I well
- 6:32Speaker 2: I want it to be warmer. Yes, to answer your question,
- 6:35Speaker 2: because I hate cool weather, and this is chilly out
- 6:38Speaker 2: here for me, so yeah, I want it to be warmer.
- 6:39Speaker 2: So it's everybody's in their sun dress. You don't have
- 6:42Speaker 2: to worry about a jacket or anything like that. I
- 6:46Speaker 2: want it to be as they would say a Chamber
- 6:49Speaker 2: of Commerce weather.
- 6:50Speaker 4: For that's a really good point. Are we gonna have
- 6:53Speaker 4: less sun dresses?
- 6:54Speaker 3: Because absolutely you are. I'm not gonna wear mom.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I'd like to see it, but uh here, listen, I
- 7:03Speaker 2: want it to be signed. But if I had the
- 7:06Speaker 2: choice between chili and rain, I'll take chili over rain, okay.
- 7:11Speaker 2: So and even if it's raining and warm, I'll take
- 7:15Speaker 2: the chili. So listen, it's gonna be good. It's gonna
- 7:18Speaker 2: be skyline chili there and we'll be good. So chili today,
- 7:20Speaker 2: hot Tomali? How do you like that joke? Isn't that terrible?
- 7:23Speaker 3: You know what the coldest Kentucky Derby ever was? I
- 7:26Speaker 3: was here. It snowed.
- 7:28Speaker 6: What?
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yes, I don't.
- 7:29Speaker 5: I know you're pretty old, buddy, but oh my god,
- 7:32Speaker 5: you're that old.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Oh okay, maybe it's not. I thought it was like
- 7:35Speaker 2: nineteen eighty nine, nineteen ninety something like that was not
- 7:39Speaker 2: the chilliest.
- 7:39Speaker 5: No, okay, this is from our buddy Mark with the Sea.
- 7:43Speaker 5: Some interesting Kentucky Derby facts. Yes, and I'm joking you. Uh,
- 7:48Speaker 5: you're what forty five coming up on fifty? I think
- 7:51Speaker 5: in nineteen fifty.
- 7:52Speaker 3: See, you're still making fun of me just by saying that.
- 7:55Speaker 3: I No, I'm covering my tracks. I'm back. Best to
- 7:58Speaker 3: look with that one.
- 7:59Speaker 5: In nineteen fifty seven, the high tempera tul I only
- 8:02Speaker 5: reached forty seven degrees in nineteen fifty seven.
- 8:05Speaker 3: Really, imagine if.
- 8:06Speaker 5: The high was forty seven degrees on Derby Day?
- 8:09Speaker 4: No, is it gonna be much higher than that this Derby?
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yes, like sixty.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I'll tell you a story my family, my mom and
- 8:15Speaker 2: dad always had a bunch of guests come in for
- 8:17Speaker 2: Derby every single year. And this one particular year, I
- 8:21Speaker 2: think it was like nineteen eighty nine, nineteen ninety something
- 8:24Speaker 2: like that, and uh, we opened the door and these
- 8:28Speaker 2: are their guests were from California. So you know, they're
- 8:30Speaker 2: dressed like as if they're in California, warm weather, no jackets, nothing.
- 8:35Speaker 2: They my mom opened the garage door, it is literally
- 8:38Speaker 2: coming down snow. Whoa, And so my mom is getting
- 8:42Speaker 2: every coat that she has in her closet so they
- 8:44Speaker 2: can put it on.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Worried out to the track.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It's the one and only Kentucky Derby. I wish my
- 8:49Speaker 2: life away. I didn't want to go and all I
- 8:51Speaker 2: want to do is go back home because it was
- 8:52Speaker 2: so freaking cold. But yeah, that was that was the
- 8:54Speaker 2: worst Derby I've ever expected. That's where the that's where
- 8:57Speaker 2: the Woodford comes into play. I was eighteen years old
- 9:01Speaker 2: old teen, It's so come on. I didn't drink at eighteen.
- 9:04Speaker 5: I'd rather have a wet well when Michael was eighteen,
- 9:07Speaker 5: that was a drinking limit back then.
- 9:08Speaker 3: That's sir, you are getting more and more, like Corey Price,
- 9:12Speaker 3: that's enough.
- 9:13Speaker 5: I so I prefer a wet Derby to a hot
- 9:16Speaker 5: Derby if you really like in the nineties, kissed me
- 9:19Speaker 5: with that.
- 9:20Speaker 3: We had one in college.
- 9:20Speaker 5: You know, we'd always go and tailgate and I think
- 9:22Speaker 5: maybe go to the endfield or rightb not.
- 9:24Speaker 3: It didn't really matter.
- 9:25Speaker 5: But there's one that I mean, everybody just got super
- 9:28Speaker 5: sunburnt and then you mix in alcohol with like a
- 9:31Speaker 5: long day, and I mean people got sick.
- 9:32Speaker 3: People.
- 9:33Speaker 5: It was just it was not good. So when what
- 9:35Speaker 5: do you think the hottest temperature is for the Kentucky Derby?
- 9:38Speaker 4: Ooh, ninety three.
- 9:40Speaker 2: No, I'm not going that hot. I would say eighty eight,
- 9:44Speaker 2: eighty eight.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Good guesses, ninety four scoopy?
- 9:47Speaker 5: Oh you Oh, interestingly enough, that was nineteen fifty nine,
- 9:52Speaker 5: two years after the coldest Kentucky Derby. Really forty seven
- 9:56Speaker 5: and fifty seven and then ninety four and fifty nine.
- 10:00Speaker 4: That's incredible.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Wow between the two options. Give me the forty seven.
- 10:03Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I'll take ninety four.
- 10:08Speaker 2: And the Queen of republic Bank just showed up, Dixie Pachelle.
- 10:12Speaker 2: It's so good and oh here is the We're amongst
- 10:15Speaker 2: royalty right here. Uh, Steve Traeger, you have to join.
- 10:19Speaker 2: I know it's a UK show, but you have to
- 10:22Speaker 2: join us just for a second and say hello, just.
- 10:25Speaker 3: For a second. You got to get closer and why
- 10:27Speaker 3: only goes so far.
- 10:28Speaker 8: I'm part of.
- 10:29Speaker 9: The BBN Supporters, the UK list. God have the Veterans Center.
- 10:36Speaker 9: I actually am very proud of our support UK. It's
- 10:39Speaker 9: a flagship university in the state and we funded the
- 10:43Speaker 9: Veterans Center. It's called the Republic Bank Foundation Veterans Center
- 10:47Speaker 9: on the campus at UK UK's got eighteen hundred veterans
- 10:51Speaker 9: to go to school there. So you know what, I
- 10:53Speaker 9: can fly the flag.
- 10:56Speaker 3: I'm so happy you listen. I think you can fly
- 10:58Speaker 3: mini flags.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I'll tell you that right because you are the old,
- 11:01Speaker 2: the consummate gentleman that is constantly out there. I mean,
- 11:05Speaker 2: I think you know we were talking to Dale Romans
- 11:07Speaker 2: a little early this morning. I think you should run
- 11:09Speaker 2: for office, not Dale Romans.
- 11:11Speaker 8: Well, I'm not that crazy.
- 11:14Speaker 3: That's not what your son says.
- 11:16Speaker 9: This is our community, you know, this is what we
- 11:18Speaker 9: do and being out and about and so people can
- 11:22Speaker 9: see us and come and tell us the needs they
- 11:25Speaker 9: have and we can help them at Republic Band.
- 11:28Speaker 3: What derby is this for you?
- 11:30Speaker 8: God, it's got to be fifty, is it? Really? I've
- 11:34Speaker 8: reached the half century.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Now. I'm not saying you're old at all, but I
- 11:38Speaker 3: mean you look the part.
- 11:39Speaker 2: But that's just a joke. Okay, it's only you're my friend. Okay,
- 11:45Speaker 2: you and I bothe that's while we're on right now.
- 11:47Speaker 2: But all right, you've walked around all morning because I
- 11:50Speaker 2: know you had a special person walking you around this morning,
- 11:52Speaker 2: you know, Michael Bennett. And who do you feel like
- 11:55Speaker 2: your horse is now for Derby God.
- 11:58Speaker 9: I like incredible. I heard a lot about that. Whrse
- 12:02Speaker 9: so happy further Ado. There's always buzz about further Ado.
- 12:08Speaker 9: So I never like to bet the absolute favorite because
- 12:11Speaker 9: I'm not a big better so I'd rather win something
- 12:14Speaker 9: if I do win.
- 12:15Speaker 8: Yes, and it's been quite a while.
- 12:18Speaker 10: Yes, well, you know, I really do.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I'm a winner because I'm a part of the Republic
- 12:23Speaker 2: Bank and you know you're a huge sponsor of our
- 12:25Speaker 2: radio station.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you very much.
- 12:28Speaker 2: Of course, you know I'm a republic Bank man, so
- 12:31Speaker 2: we appreciate it the little money. I have Thrive together
- 12:36Speaker 2: and proud to be part of you.
- 12:38Speaker 8: Thrive.
- 12:38Speaker 3: And you got guests that they're in from Chicago here
- 12:41Speaker 3: with you.
- 12:41Speaker 6: We do.
- 12:42Speaker 8: We've got our friends.
- 12:44Speaker 3: You have to come say hello, Anthony.
- 12:46Speaker 6: Not everybody fantastic.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Yes see and he sounds like you, oh exactly. You
- 12:53Speaker 2: think he would be going after Chief Wallaby.
- 12:55Speaker 6: But I mean I thought about that. Although we're not Australian.
- 13:01Speaker 3: And where are you from? Where are you from? Antony?
- 13:04Speaker 6: From Chicago?
- 13:06Speaker 2: Originally you were from South Africa, South Africa like Great White.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Probably you're probably on Great White. Have you seen that horse.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Yet he's in the Rice said, he is the biggest
- 13:18Speaker 3: horse I think I've ever seen. Great.
- 13:20Speaker 5: I mean, it is a you like you step by,
- 13:22Speaker 5: You're like, oh my goodness, gracious, that's the same animal
- 13:24Speaker 5: as some of these other ones.
- 13:25Speaker 3: It is a ginormous horse. It's beautiful. So okay, South
- 13:28Speaker 3: African going.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, yeah, I know you have a couple other
- 13:34Speaker 2: guests with you.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Uh, ma'am, would you come up here? Please?
- 13:38Speaker 2: I'm talking. No, ma'am, I am talking to you right there.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Look Justin you said I told you, would you please
- 13:45Speaker 2: come here? You please come here? I told him you
- 13:48Speaker 2: wouldn't come on. What is your name, ma'am?
- 13:50Speaker 3: Patricia? Patricia?
- 13:52Speaker 4: What ma'am? Come on?
- 13:55Speaker 3: Would stop it?
- 13:56Speaker 2: You've not been that name in thirty years? Would you
- 14:00Speaker 2: say what your name is? I know Justin has some
- 14:06Speaker 2: questions for you, if you'd like to answer.
- 14:08Speaker 4: No, I said, I can't ask him to you on air.
- 14:10Speaker 4: It's gotta be it off.
- 14:13Speaker 2: And you're happily What is the man you're happily married
- 14:16Speaker 2: to that you love dearly? That you you gotta stand
- 14:20Speaker 2: closer to the microphone.
- 14:21Speaker 3: It's too cold. I forgot Okay, thanks a lot.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Can you imagine being married to somebody that doesn't like
- 14:28Speaker 2: to admit that. But anyway, anyway, absolutely, y'all have a
- 14:33Speaker 2: great derby.
- 14:33Speaker 6: I hope you.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Enjoy yourself and we'll see you later. Okay, all right,
- 14:37Speaker 3: thank you, welcome. Max won't even come over here, Kelsey?
- 14:44Speaker 3: Can you come here? Please?
- 14:45Speaker 4: The household alone.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Let them enjoy their backside.
- 14:48Speaker 2: I know she's gotta come over, Kelsey. This is Kelsey Gill.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Do you want to say hello, Kelsey Gill?
- 14:55Speaker 6: Hello, Kelsey Gill?
- 14:59Speaker 3: And who are you? Kelsey Gill? Oh jeez, okay, that's enough,
- 15:03Speaker 3: see you later. Oh my gosh. Yeah.
- 15:09Speaker 2: See the respect that I command within my family. Do
- 15:12Speaker 2: y'all notice that I get? You know, you know TJ's
- 15:15Speaker 2: hardly ever with me. He gives me zero respect. That's
- 15:18Speaker 2: not true, No, it's not. It's all kill the respect.
- 15:23Speaker 2: I hear a little facetious here, okay, fair, Okay, there
- 15:28Speaker 2: you go. Yeah, listen, our friendship is growing.
- 15:30Speaker 3: I hope and I can.
- 15:33Speaker 5: You don't really get to brush shoulders off.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Which I had because every time you when you've been
- 15:38Speaker 2: on the radio with me, I have enjoyed it thoroughly
- 15:41Speaker 2: as and I'm getting a phone call right now, Terry,
- 15:43Speaker 2: I'm over here at the media center if you have time.
- 15:47Speaker 4: But I love answer.
- 15:50Speaker 2: I can't help it. I mean, this is a very
- 15:52Speaker 2: famous person that's going to come on the radio with us.
- 15:54Speaker 2: But uh uh, but yeah, Terry Finley of a West
- 15:57Speaker 2: Point Thoroughbreds will come over, ken you McPeak is.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Going to join us a little bit. I've got an
- 16:01Speaker 3: update for you.
- 16:02Speaker 5: I'm ready because you know, I never have heard about
- 16:07Speaker 5: a snowy Derby.
- 16:09Speaker 3: So I was like, you're out of your mind. The
- 16:11Speaker 3: court you don't believe my star.
- 16:13Speaker 4: No I didn't.
- 16:13Speaker 3: I did not, and you're just like justin. I apologize.
- 16:17Speaker 3: He's always checking out. I apologize.
- 16:19Speaker 5: Nineteen nineteen eighty nine, I had it right there right now,
- 16:24Speaker 5: for what it's worth, the high got to fifty one.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Therefore it still was getting a little more Derby.
- 16:29Speaker 5: But you are right in eighty nine there was a
- 16:31Speaker 5: wintry mix and snow on Derby day.
- 16:34Speaker 3: How have I never heard that before?
- 16:35Speaker 2: It's not like she was with us. Hold on a second, now,
- 16:38Speaker 2: we hold on, hold on, nobody can hear you?
- 16:41Speaker 6: Okay?
- 16:42Speaker 4: I was back here and what is your.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Name, Carol? And what do you do here? Carol?
- 16:47Speaker 6: I drive for an owner.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Okay, which one counting.
- 16:50Speaker 6: Stars and the oaks?
- 16:51Speaker 3: Oh I see, look at that. We have another famous
- 16:55Speaker 3: person here.
- 16:55Speaker 10: Oh so famous the buck side.
- 16:58Speaker 6: You know you could get it.
- 16:59Speaker 3: A little easier by Yeah you got that.
- 17:03Speaker 6: Yeah, one of those.
- 17:04Speaker 11: But it snowed. We were like, oh my goodness, we're showing.
- 17:08Speaker 11: And they used to let you. We said on that
- 17:11Speaker 11: at the shoot and we watched the derby right on
- 17:14Speaker 11: that point with oh.
- 17:17Speaker 3: My goshu and who is with you? What is your name?
- 17:23Speaker 2: And who are you? Blake y'all look great today? Okay, Saleen,
- 17:27Speaker 2: did you have.
- 17:28Speaker 3: A horse race? Did you race that horsey?
- 17:31Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 17:33Speaker 5: I was at Raypael Giants. I graduated in five.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Yes, that does.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Love Saint Rayfael Go Giants Greens.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Baby, thank you very much.
- 17:42Speaker 2: All right, listen, I even joined today already, far more
- 17:46Speaker 2: than with Nick Rouse.
- 17:47Speaker 3: I mean you you bring an energy to.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Me, tg.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I just don't.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I cannot deny it. We gotta take our first break
- 17:53Speaker 2: if you want to join us. Can't call in today.
- 17:55Speaker 2: But we're gonna have Terry Finley of West Point Thoroughbreds,
- 17:58Speaker 2: who's won and knows what it's like to win at
- 18:00Speaker 2: the Kentucky Derby will be up with us next, so
- 18:02Speaker 2: we'll talk to him.
- 18:03Speaker 3: But stay right there.
- 18:04Speaker 2: If you want to text in follow two four one
- 18:06Speaker 2: four fourteen fifty on the Whiskey Thief text line stay
- 18:08Speaker 2: right there. We got a bunch of guests today on
- 18:11Speaker 2: just the catch.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Shame lady.
- 18:35Speaker 3: From the outside, then down toward them at his advice.
- 18:38Speaker 12: As the field turns for home top of the stretch,
- 18:41Speaker 12: it's still join of the dance with a tenuous lead.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Regal radslim and pine. Here of the aisle strikes the
- 18:47Speaker 3: front just upside of the aple. Musket Man is coming
- 18:50Speaker 3: hard down the.
- 18:50Speaker 12: Side of the track, and Paffee combs right there too.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Down throw the inside coming on through that ins myle bird.
- 18:57Speaker 12: I was coming on to take the late as they
- 18:59Speaker 12: come down to the been of spectacular spectacular upset mine
- 19:05Speaker 12: that bird has mom in the Kentucky possible result.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Here two fourteen.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Fifty if you want to text in on the Whiskey
- 19:14Speaker 2: Thief text line, Uh and now joining us because I'm
- 19:18Speaker 2: he wants his head set down. It's too loud because
- 19:21Speaker 2: you know I can't help but being loud. So Terry
- 19:24Speaker 2: Finley of West Point thoroughbreads Terry. Good morning, happy derby
- 19:27Speaker 2: to you, I.
- 19:28Speaker 13: Would say loud and pride. Michael sounds good.
- 19:30Speaker 2: I know, but you know, I think you've been around
- 19:33Speaker 2: me long enough to know he's just We went out
- 19:36Speaker 2: to dinner. We were at at the March Obs sale
- 19:38Speaker 2: down in No, California. He wants to have dinner, invites me,
- 19:42Speaker 2: and I'm thinking, oh wow, we're gonna go to this
- 19:44Speaker 2: real fancy place.
- 19:45Speaker 3: I look forward to it.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I won't have to pay because you know, he has
- 19:48Speaker 2: all the money in the world and I'm just a
- 19:49Speaker 2: broke redneck from Oldham County. He invites us to one
- 19:53Speaker 2: and only Cracker Barrel Is where.
- 19:56Speaker 3: We went in No Califlorida. Yeah, for dinner, for dinner exactly,
- 19:59Speaker 3: not for breakfast. For dinner, I said.
- 20:03Speaker 14: I said, Michael's acting like an insurance agent, very short armed,
- 20:07Speaker 14: very short armed.
- 20:08Speaker 3: That's not true. I tried to hold my own.
- 20:11Speaker 2: But you know, we went with Dale Romans at night
- 20:13Speaker 2: and another really good friend about Rebbie SEUTHI South who
- 20:16Speaker 2: we all love, Debbie Seuth.
- 20:18Speaker 14: I hope you're listening, Debbie, because we're all such big
- 20:21Speaker 14: fans of you, and yeah, all you stand for.
- 20:23Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know she's advertised on this show that's Stooge,
- 20:26Speaker 2: just justin. Debbie self is part of that, and she's
- 20:29Speaker 2: a part of West Point Thoroughbreds for many years. But
- 20:32Speaker 2: you know, for the people that don't know you, you started
- 20:36Speaker 2: West Point Thoroughbreds, which is a racing partnership, extremely successful.
- 20:42Speaker 3: How many years ago.
- 20:43Speaker 14: We're in the midst of thirty five years, Michael, So,
- 20:47Speaker 14: we started in nineteen ninety one. I was right at
- 20:49Speaker 14: the end of my army career. I was an Army
- 20:52Speaker 14: captain and I didn't feel a pull to the corporate world.
- 20:57Speaker 14: And I always loved horse racing. I'd been like around
- 21:00Speaker 14: it as a kid. So I said, you know, partnerships
- 21:03Speaker 14: were really starting to get going. Then Catt Campbell obviously
- 21:06Speaker 14: the father.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Oh yeah, absolutely. So I went to high school with
- 21:08Speaker 3: my dad.
- 21:09Speaker 13: Get out of here.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I'm totally here.
- 21:11Speaker 2: And Tennessee Battleground Academy is where they went to high
- 21:15Speaker 2: school together.
- 21:16Speaker 13: I never knew he was from Franklin.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I have a son who lives from Franklin, right, But no,
- 21:21Speaker 2: because it was a boarding school at the time, and
- 21:22Speaker 2: he and my dad went to high school because it
- 21:24Speaker 2: was and they went to battleground. That's right, because your
- 21:27Speaker 2: kids do live down there in Franklin. I forgot that.
- 21:29Speaker 13: That's crazy.
- 21:30Speaker 14: So, uh, you know, he he was really a person
- 21:34Speaker 14: that a lot of people looked up to in the
- 21:36Speaker 14: industry as a whole.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Dogwood Stable was extremely successful.
- 21:40Speaker 14: And he started the wave of partnerships and all of
- 21:44Speaker 14: a sudden, you democratized the horse race in business. And
- 21:48Speaker 14: I mean we all know, right what what would our
- 21:51Speaker 14: business be without partnerships Like so, I'm just I'm just
- 21:56Speaker 14: happy to be part of it and to have my
- 21:58Speaker 14: peace in the entire partnership ecosystem and the ecosystem that
- 22:03Speaker 14: we all loved Thoroughbred horse racing.
- 22:06Speaker 2: What was your first raise when you first started in
- 22:09Speaker 2: nineteen ninety one? How much money did you raise? How
- 22:11Speaker 2: many horses did you buy? Because I think this is
- 22:13Speaker 2: a great story.
- 22:14Speaker 14: We didn't raise any money. We bought a horse. Actually,
- 22:18Speaker 14: my wife and I we claimed a horse. At at
- 22:20Speaker 14: that time it was Philadelphia Park, it was Keystone and
- 22:26Speaker 14: then Philadelphia Park.
- 22:27Speaker 13: And now it's Park Parks.
- 22:29Speaker 14: Yeah, so we claimed a horse for a nickel and
- 22:33Speaker 14: he won first time off the sixty two five and
- 22:38Speaker 14: he had a little bit of a knee and I'm
- 22:41Speaker 14: glad Hayasa wasn't around then, But that's another story.
- 22:50Speaker 13: I'm a big fan of Hiseem.
- 22:52Speaker 5: By the way, you are Jockey Club Stewart correct, What
- 22:56Speaker 5: do you think are the biggest challenges facing horse racing?
- 23:01Speaker 14: Well, that's a question that you know, I'm not sure
- 23:06Speaker 14: we have enough time to talk about.
- 23:08Speaker 13: But but listen.
- 23:10Speaker 3: What do we have?
- 23:11Speaker 14: One is we gotta we gotta stay more positive. Like
- 23:15Speaker 14: I think that the problems have been identified, right, the
- 23:21Speaker 14: problems are on the table. I quite frankly when people
- 23:26Speaker 14: talk to me about the Jockey Club, the Jockey Club's
- 23:29Speaker 14: a different entity. Now, you got a different board of stewards.
- 23:32Speaker 14: You got people that are stewards that I mean ten
- 23:36Speaker 14: years ago never would have even been considered to get
- 23:39Speaker 14: into the Jockey Club.
- 23:40Speaker 13: And I get it.
- 23:41Speaker 14: I get the governments or the governance of the Jockey
- 23:45Speaker 14: Club and everything else is I.
- 23:48Speaker 13: Think there's upside there.
- 23:52Speaker 14: The Jockey Club really is a is a is a
- 23:56Speaker 14: trade organization, right, no real power except you know, like
- 24:01Speaker 14: on the registry side, if there's somebody is a real
- 24:05Speaker 14: bad actor, we have a chance to bar them from
- 24:07Speaker 14: registering a thorwbird racesource, but beyond that there's no real power.
- 24:13Speaker 14: We have to use the power of our contacts and persuasion.
- 24:18Speaker 14: So I think with that context, we have to look
- 24:22Speaker 14: at things that we truly have the ability to impact
- 24:25Speaker 14: and not just to do things that are shown. And
- 24:32Speaker 14: I know a lot of people I think rightly, so
- 24:34Speaker 14: we haven't done a very good job talking about the
- 24:37Speaker 14: things that we do well and addressing and really taking
- 24:41Speaker 14: accountability and responsibility for the things that haven't gone well
- 24:46Speaker 14: that we've been part of. But keep in mind, there's
- 24:49Speaker 14: not a single initiative that it's just been the jockey club.
- 24:55Speaker 3: You got the.
- 24:56Speaker 14: Ntr RA, you got tracks, you've got horsemen's organizations.
- 25:00Speaker 13: It's a structure that, certainly, I think.
- 25:03Speaker 14: We would all agree if we had to do it
- 25:06Speaker 14: again and we had a whiteboard, it would be a
- 25:08Speaker 14: lot different than it is now.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Absolutely, that being said, it is what it is.
- 25:14Speaker 13: We're not changing the structure.
- 25:16Speaker 14: We're not getting Bill Carstanding and Churchill downs to come
- 25:19Speaker 14: into to some structure where they give up control. I
- 25:23Speaker 14: wouldn't if I was a public company CEO. I mean,
- 25:27Speaker 14: I couldn't represent my shareholders, who are are my number
- 25:31Speaker 14: one interests and I couldn't get into a situation where
- 25:37Speaker 14: I'm subordinate as a result of the industry. So listen,
- 25:41Speaker 14: we gotta work together. We gotta stay positive, like work
- 25:45Speaker 14: on the things we got. Aftercare right has gone a
- 25:48Speaker 14: good way down.
- 25:49Speaker 3: The road, absolutely right.
- 25:51Speaker 13: I mean I was talking to somebody yesterday.
- 25:53Speaker 14: They said, I followed Aftercare like in a lot of ways,
- 25:57Speaker 14: you could reasonably say the industry he should be celebrating
- 26:01Speaker 14: the amount of progress we've made since twenty ten, in
- 26:05Speaker 14: fifteen or sixteen years.
- 26:06Speaker 4: I get it like we're.
- 26:08Speaker 13: Beating ourselves up. I'm not sure that helps us so.
- 26:11Speaker 2: But it seems like the trend on horses getting scratched
- 26:14Speaker 2: right before a race is going up?
- 26:16Speaker 3: Why is that? And how do you correct that?
- 26:19Speaker 2: Well, cause you know you got Micropoli that's really speaking
- 26:21Speaker 2: out about this. You've got a few trainers out there
- 26:24Speaker 2: that are now starting to speak out about this. What
- 26:26Speaker 2: does Terry Finley say?
- 26:30Speaker 14: Terry Finley says that it's I use a business. I'd
- 26:37Speaker 14: say multifactorial.
- 26:39Speaker 3: Right, the word right? What I mean what I mean
- 26:42Speaker 3: by that simple?
- 26:43Speaker 2: Michael Bennett, You're just a red redneck, redneck.
- 26:47Speaker 3: From Oldham County, County bumpkin.
- 26:51Speaker 14: Look, tensions are high, and and and emotions are high,
- 26:56Speaker 14: and and and look, I don't think anybody has any
- 26:59Speaker 14: mal intent. Absolutely if anybody would, and I've had people
- 27:03Speaker 14: say there's.
- 27:03Speaker 13: Mal intent, I said, what do you where? What universe
- 27:06Speaker 13: are you from?
- 27:07Speaker 3: What?
- 27:08Speaker 14: What benefit is it to have a state vet or
- 27:14Speaker 14: like a regulatory vet overall scratch or horse like, that's.
- 27:17Speaker 13: Just insane, right, I said, we get.
- 27:20Speaker 3: We get, We got to work on it.
- 27:22Speaker 14: I mean, there is a case when you look at it,
- 27:25Speaker 14: it's like there there might be we might be in
- 27:28Speaker 14: his zone where the horses that are are not as
- 27:32Speaker 14: solid as they are from a lameness standpoint or from
- 27:34Speaker 14: a soundness standpoint. Ye, And we might be just in
- 27:38Speaker 14: a in a in a period of time where that's happening.
- 27:42Speaker 14: It's probably somewhere in between, right where where people are like, no,
- 27:46Speaker 14: the system works, And I know the system doesn't work.
- 27:49Speaker 14: So I know, I'm on the commission, I'm I'm a
- 27:54Speaker 14: member of the corporation, and like I know, they're they're
- 27:57Speaker 14: they hear it, they read I mean, so it's data
- 28:02Speaker 14: and it's also personnel, and I mean, we're going to
- 28:07Speaker 14: get to a better spot. But but the problem is
- 28:10Speaker 14: that you're still gonna have scratches. So there's always there
- 28:13Speaker 14: will always be people saying the system is screwed up.
- 28:18Speaker 13: Well, no, the system works.
- 28:20Speaker 14: But it's we're human beings, so they're they make judgment calls. Yeah,
- 28:26Speaker 14: and I know before replay like in professional sports, like
- 28:32Speaker 14: like the refs or the officials, like they're people. So
- 28:37Speaker 14: but I understand there's a lot of money involved. There's
- 28:39Speaker 14: a there's a lot of future you know, breeding.
- 28:43Speaker 13: Prospects, which all the money. So so it's.
- 28:47Speaker 14: Like it's it gives you a migraine to think about
- 28:50Speaker 14: how come how complex this is. Yes, it's not going
- 28:54Speaker 14: to be any any less complex, especially because you know,
- 28:58Speaker 14: the only thing that that could take is if we
- 29:00Speaker 14: go to we use technology only and that's not gonna work.
- 29:04Speaker 14: We can't use technology on we The human element is
- 29:07Speaker 14: part of this, so listen. I think key is that
- 29:12Speaker 14: we keep our wits about us. Yes, we remain overall
- 29:17Speaker 14: ladies and gentlemen, and we remain respectful of the people
- 29:21Speaker 14: and the process, and we do everything we can to
- 29:24Speaker 14: make it better. You know, I'm not sure that kind
- 29:27Speaker 14: of I don't think that's a I don't think that's
- 29:30Speaker 14: a mealy mouth explanation, but it certainly doesn't like there's
- 29:35Speaker 14: there's not a whole lot there yet.
- 29:37Speaker 13: But let's keep talking.
- 29:39Speaker 2: We're aware of it exactly. That's the part that I
- 29:41Speaker 2: love the most. That's the best part you said right there.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Let's keep talking about it, and let's come together so
- 29:45Speaker 2: that you know, we don't go down a path where
- 29:47Speaker 2: it hurts the sport, because that's the one thing I'm
- 29:50Speaker 2: concerned the most is hurting the sport because now we're
- 29:53Speaker 2: losing TVG and the fan duel.
- 29:56Speaker 6: I mean, how do.
- 29:56Speaker 2: We keep this product in front of people's that we
- 30:00Speaker 2: grow generations that like us that love horse racing.
- 30:05Speaker 14: I think one of the first things is to realize
- 30:08Speaker 14: it's not easy. Yes, and I have people that you know,
- 30:12Speaker 14: if we do this, we just we get a lot
- 30:14Speaker 14: more owners and a lot more betters. So okay, it
- 30:19Speaker 14: ain't It ain't easy, but it's gonna take time. And
- 30:24Speaker 14: but there are some good ideas. You got technology you
- 30:27Speaker 14: talked about Griffin Johnson, and I know I've been part
- 30:30Speaker 14: of the of of a b R which is a
- 30:32Speaker 14: jockey club UH subsidiary. But but but tracks need to
- 30:37Speaker 14: do a better job and and the horsemen's organizations. But
- 30:41Speaker 14: at least we're starting to get a sense of what
- 30:43Speaker 14: that what that framework could and should look like. And
- 30:48Speaker 14: so like for the first time, like we're you think
- 30:52Speaker 14: about Griffin last year when.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Griffin Johnson still in case people don't.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Know who he is, tell us who is an luncher,
- 31:00Speaker 2: a huge influencer, nine and a half million followers on TikTok.
- 31:03Speaker 14: All tikbe so aggregate about fifteen million yes, and and
- 31:07Speaker 14: came in and through Abry we got him a piece
- 31:12Speaker 14: of Sandman last year and he and he's basically just
- 31:16Speaker 14: fallen in love with the game.
- 31:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:18Speaker 14: And so his demographic, while they they're not going to
- 31:22Speaker 14: turn into Wales right now, they at least get exposed. Yes,
- 31:27Speaker 14: And they have been exposed, and the viewership has been
- 31:30Speaker 14: way up in the and the betting handle on one
- 31:33Speaker 14: hundred and fifty first, Yeah, was you know in the
- 31:36Speaker 14: reins of the one hundred and fifty, which they blew
- 31:40Speaker 14: out In terms of.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Let's talk about your Kentucky Derby experience since we're two
- 31:45Speaker 2: days away from it. You know, you came close with
- 31:48Speaker 2: commanding Curve with the second who is one of my
- 31:51Speaker 2: all time favorite horses. I mean besides flight Line, but uh,
- 31:54Speaker 2: you know you had another one named always Dreaming that one.
- 31:58Speaker 2: What was it like that experience? Kind of give us
- 32:01Speaker 2: a brief description. That afternoon was like that. Yeah, ten
- 32:06Speaker 2: fifteen minutes that you were at the Winter Circle holding
- 32:09Speaker 2: up the trophy.
- 32:10Speaker 10: Yep.
- 32:11Speaker 13: Well, you go to the museum and you go to
- 32:13Speaker 13: that three sixty.
- 32:14Speaker 14: I remember Woody Stevens, Oh yeah, you know he like
- 32:19Speaker 14: for years I'd go and I'd hear his voice, like,
- 32:22Speaker 14: they get to the eighth pole and you know, or
- 32:24Speaker 14: the sixteenth pole, and you know you're gonna win. Yeah,
- 32:27Speaker 14: and right away your mind starts going to who you're
- 32:30Speaker 14: thankful for, your mom and dad, your people, your team,
- 32:34Speaker 14: and and that's exactly what happened.
- 32:37Speaker 13: It's exactly what happened.
- 32:38Speaker 14: They got the sixteenth pole, and I you know, you.
- 32:40Speaker 13: Just are thankful to be in this spot. Right.
- 32:44Speaker 14: We all remember the first derby that we came to
- 32:47Speaker 14: Mine was in seventy seven with affirmed an Ali Dar
- 32:52Speaker 14: and so I thought about them too.
- 32:54Speaker 13: I thought about that crown absolutely.
- 32:57Speaker 3: I thought, you know, it's like it's like taking a
- 32:59Speaker 3: knee ball. It's just you know that you won all
- 33:01Speaker 3: you gotta do.
- 33:02Speaker 6: Is just.
- 33:04Speaker 5: My question about some of your best horses in their prime?
- 33:07Speaker 3: Who do you think is is winning?
- 33:09Speaker 5: If they're all you line up your best horses always
- 33:12Speaker 5: streaming flight Line? Uh would you? Sandman was one of yours?
- 33:17Speaker 13: Right?
- 33:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know who else probably throw in there,
- 33:20Speaker 5: but who do you end their prime best if they
- 33:22Speaker 5: were to race, Let's just.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Say the Derby course. Ye, who do you think's winning?
- 33:25Speaker 14: So easy, easy answer, that would be flight Line.
- 33:30Speaker 3: I figured that as well. Yeah, we have never.
- 33:35Speaker 14: No one on in the ownership team or or or
- 33:38Speaker 14: John Sadler has ever ever propagated the notion, uh that
- 33:44Speaker 14: flight Line was better than the Secretariat. How I see
- 33:47Speaker 14: it and how I process it was. They get to
- 33:50Speaker 14: the last sixteenth of a mile in the Breeders' Cup
- 33:53Speaker 14: Classic and the announcer Larry Colemas said a Secretariat esque
- 34:00Speaker 14: type of performance, and that was all, Like, that was.
- 34:03Speaker 13: All I needed. I felt really good because.
- 34:06Speaker 14: Just being in the same sentence as Secretariat, Oh yeah,
- 34:09Speaker 14: exactly know, we're all kind of mean. You and I
- 34:11Speaker 14: are in the position where I was ten years old
- 34:15Speaker 14: when Secretary ran and and I remember I remember sitting
- 34:19Speaker 14: in the TV so anyway.
- 34:22Speaker 2: We know you were that much older than me. There
- 34:25Speaker 2: you go exactly, I just you know, I'm just losing
- 34:29Speaker 2: a friend right there. But no, you're not, because that's
- 34:32Speaker 2: one of the things. You know, was with John Sadler
- 34:34Speaker 2: out at Santa Anita back in January and of course
- 34:38Speaker 2: driving around the golf cart with him and then Michael,
- 34:40Speaker 2: did you see this?
- 34:41Speaker 3: And I'm like, there's flight Line.
- 34:43Speaker 2: I mean, even he listening you talk about him with
- 34:46Speaker 2: such affinity and hearing John Sadler the trainer of flight Line,
- 34:50Speaker 2: and the immense proudness that he has with that horse.
- 34:54Speaker 2: It's really incredible to listen to.
- 34:56Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 34:57Speaker 14: Well when he at the at the press conference after
- 35:01Speaker 14: the Breeders Cup Classic, you know, for him to break
- 35:04Speaker 14: down like you way, he's a pretty stoic guy, and
- 35:06Speaker 14: he goes, this is a culmination of a life's work.
- 35:10Speaker 13: You know, he had trained horses.
- 35:11Speaker 14: So think about the number of years that three hundred
- 35:18Speaker 14: and sixty five days he got up at an early
- 35:22Speaker 14: hour to come to the barn and for a good
- 35:24Speaker 14: part of his career he just you know, he just
- 35:26Speaker 14: had manes and tails quote unquote, and then he gets
- 35:30Speaker 14: worse like this and he does such a good job.
- 35:32Speaker 14: And look, I'm very proud of the fact that the partnership,
- 35:37Speaker 14: it was a great partnership, and we we gave total
- 35:40Speaker 14: control to John, so he knew there there will be
- 35:43Speaker 14: no second guessing for him if he wanted to run
- 35:46Speaker 14: into Malibu and then wait until the obviously had to.
- 35:50Speaker 13: He had had a couple of little things, but.
- 35:54Speaker 14: It was a culmination of a life's work for a
- 35:58Speaker 14: guy like that, And it was so great to be
- 36:00Speaker 14: like in the in the seat and to have a
- 36:04Speaker 14: view of a of a true pro And you know,
- 36:06Speaker 14: I've said it before, and I know you shouldn't politic
- 36:09Speaker 14: for the Hall of Fame, but you know, there's several
- 36:11Speaker 14: guys right now that are on the cusp, and I
- 36:13Speaker 14: hope in the next couple of years they get into
- 36:15Speaker 14: Hall of Fame absolutely, one being John Saddler and.
- 36:19Speaker 3: Finley as well.
- 36:20Speaker 2: But uh, uh, let's talk about real quickly before we
- 36:23Speaker 2: talk about your Oaks Philly, uh super Corridor.
- 36:26Speaker 3: I know you were.
- 36:28Speaker 2: John was really high on her Saddler uh and unfortunately
- 36:32Speaker 2: it just didn't turn out that way.
- 36:33Speaker 3: How is she doing right now?
- 36:34Speaker 14: Yeah, she's actually back here uh at Becky Makers.
- 36:38Speaker 13: So we we brought it back. Yeah, we sent it
- 36:41Speaker 13: to a new vett. He's kind of a new guy
- 36:43Speaker 13: on the block, doctor Larry Bramledge.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Okay, no, he's I kind of heard that before.
- 36:49Speaker 14: So she had bone bruising, which everybody kind of says,
- 36:53Speaker 14: you know, they all if if they all, you know,
- 36:55Speaker 14: they don't run, well they've quote unquote they they they
- 36:58Speaker 14: got bruising. But she did, and you know, we're hoping
- 37:02Speaker 14: that like a couple months and she got a shot
- 37:05Speaker 14: to drop her head and eat some grass and we'll
- 37:08Speaker 14: bring her back in the fall.
- 37:10Speaker 13: And get it ready for a four year old campaign.
- 37:13Speaker 3: And your horse on Friday name.
- 37:15Speaker 13: Is Counting Stars, which I love.
- 37:18Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, yeah. How you feel about the race on Friday?
- 37:21Speaker 14: Yeah, it's it truly is like like I know we're
- 37:24Speaker 14: in it, but it's such a cool race, such a
- 37:28Speaker 14: competitive race, and they're eight or nine in there that
- 37:32Speaker 14: you absolutely can't throw out, and the winner might come
- 37:35Speaker 14: from the other four or five six horses that you
- 37:38Speaker 14: you think you can throw out, so anybody can win.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Yeah, you're right about that.
- 37:44Speaker 2: So your Derby pick this year, you don't have one
- 37:47Speaker 2: in the Derby this year? Who because it's kind of
- 37:50Speaker 2: what We've talked about it several times. Even Ned Toffee
- 37:52Speaker 2: was standing right where you were yesterday saying, this is
- 37:54Speaker 2: a pretty even feel.
- 37:57Speaker 14: I think his horse, his horse has gotta be and
- 38:00Speaker 14: if he gets the trip and he and he and
- 38:02Speaker 14: he replicates anywhere near what he You know, the way
- 38:05Speaker 14: he ran at Keenland a couple of times, like I know,
- 38:09Speaker 14: people are saying, well, he's a Keenland. Well, it doesn't
- 38:11Speaker 14: mean if you run well at Keenland you don't run elsewhere, right,
- 38:14Speaker 14: I mean he had some issues. I think there's a
- 38:16Speaker 14: story to tell why he hasn't replicated between his two races.
- 38:21Speaker 2: It wasn't much quality in that race, but it doesn't matter.
- 38:24Speaker 2: It was the speed and how well he won the race.
- 38:27Speaker 14: So you beat who you run against him exactly right,
- 38:29Speaker 14: and that's what matters. So I think he's he's good.
- 38:33Speaker 14: Unfortunately I did. I told a couple of people I
- 38:36Speaker 14: liked full effort.
- 38:37Speaker 13: He just got scratched. But I mean, Golden Tempo could be.
- 38:44Speaker 14: I think could be a horse that you use in
- 38:47Speaker 14: your supers super.
- 38:49Speaker 2: It's always fun having you. I really appreciate you taking
- 38:52Speaker 2: time coming over here. People want to contact you about
- 38:55Speaker 2: joining Westport Thoroughbreds.
- 38:56Speaker 3: Yea, how do they do it?
- 38:57Speaker 14: All they got to do is go onto a website
- 39:00Speaker 14: west Point tv dot com and.
- 39:04Speaker 13: Start a discussion.
- 39:06Speaker 2: Sounds good to me, Terry Finley, always fun having you
- 39:08Speaker 2: my friends. We're going to take a break and when
- 39:13Speaker 2: we come back, Jason Worth is going to.
- 39:16Speaker 3: Be with us, so we'll be right back. This is
- 39:18Speaker 3: just the cats. Oh no, today.
- 39:27Speaker 6: We sing one some.
- 39:31Speaker 15: Kentucky Entucky Always Dreaming has moved outside of State of
- 39:38Speaker 15: Honor and it's putting in a bid for the lead.
- 39:40Speaker 3: With just a half mile to go in.
- 39:41Speaker 15: The Run for the Roses, Irish war Cry is poised
- 39:44Speaker 15: on their outside, and Battle of Midway is right there too,
- 39:47Speaker 15: racing fourth and coming on thirty three horses farther back
- 39:50Speaker 15: in the field. Gormley started to muster up a rally
- 39:52Speaker 15: practical joke goes by fast and accurate. Mccrackan's been released
- 39:56Speaker 15: on the outside and he's flying past horses up to
- 39:59Speaker 15: be fourth on the far outside. Classic Empires following him
- 40:02Speaker 15: as they round the fire turn in the one and
- 40:05Speaker 15: forty third Kentucky derby Always Dreaming as the leader. Battle
- 40:08Speaker 15: of Midway fights on between horses Irish WARKRAI is there
- 40:12Speaker 15: on the outside. McCracken swings wide, Classic Empire does too,
- 40:15Speaker 15: and looking at Lee cut the corner off the turn.
- 40:18Speaker 15: They're racing for the final furlong, Always Dreaming digging down deep,
- 40:21Speaker 15: but a two length fleet Looking at Lee wanders off
- 40:24Speaker 15: the rail now with three lengths to make up in
- 40:26Speaker 15: a sixteenth to go, But always Dreaming is digging down,
- 40:29Speaker 15: and always Dreaming.
- 40:30Speaker 4: Is holding on.
- 40:31Speaker 15: Looking at Lee can't catch always Dreaming.
- 40:34Speaker 4: Who's the one hundred and forty faird winner.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Up the Kentucky You can't call? I do hear it?
- 40:39Speaker 2: Going in with a whole muscle memory. But joining us
- 40:42Speaker 2: now is not Jason Worth. Jason Worth's going to come
- 40:44Speaker 2: up in just a couple of minutes. But Kenny McPeak
- 40:47Speaker 2: is going to give us a few minutes.
- 40:49Speaker 6: It's better.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, I don't think I would see that out.
- 40:53Speaker 3: But jeez, Louisa, you you've you've.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Had a little bit of success at training. I remember,
- 41:00Speaker 2: but you were the trainer of which horse I think
- 41:03Speaker 2: his name was Mystic Dan and another one named who's
- 41:06Speaker 2: my favorite Torpedo? Anna Thorp okay Thorpedo. I said it wrong.
- 41:10Speaker 2: I mean, as these guys know, I miss listen. I
- 41:13Speaker 2: mispronounced my wife's name when we were getting married at
- 41:16Speaker 2: the altar that she swears up and down where she
- 41:19Speaker 2: hasn't forgiven him. Kenny Peaks joined us.
- 41:22Speaker 3: How are you doing.
- 41:23Speaker 6: I'm great, pretty relaxed for the most part.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Are you really?
- 41:26Speaker 6: I don't I don't get all wound up about these
- 41:28Speaker 6: events anymore. We changed well, winning.
- 41:31Speaker 5: It sweep, sweeping the weekend, we'll do that.
- 41:36Speaker 2: I wish people could just see the way you just
- 41:38Speaker 2: looked at me when you said that.
- 41:40Speaker 3: But yeah, that does help, doesn't it.
- 41:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean for having been there, done that. I mean,
- 41:46Speaker 6: if there's a certain satisfaction and calmness about Okay, I
- 41:51Speaker 6: did that, and I don't feel any pressure, and I
- 41:53Speaker 6: don't put pressure on myself. The hardest part is actually
- 41:56Speaker 6: dealing with all the people that are coming through every day,
- 41:58Speaker 6: and everybody's kind of wanting to feel and touch and
- 42:00Speaker 6: be around. And but that's fun too.
- 42:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:03Speaker 6: Yeah, this morning I rode in with my wife and
- 42:05Speaker 6: daughter and your dog and my dog. Yeah that's the
- 42:09Speaker 6: most important. Dog brought us in. Yeah he's amazing, Sonny.
- 42:13Speaker 6: But yeah, it's a lot of fun. It's a great
- 42:15Speaker 6: week of racing, and there's so many people and there's
- 42:18Speaker 6: so much energy here, and we at this stage we
- 42:21Speaker 6: kind of enjoy it. We were having a brunch at
- 42:23Speaker 6: our home on Saturday ten am and all good, Yeah,
- 42:27Speaker 6: well all invited. Yeah, come on, we'll have a couple
- 42:29Speaker 6: of hundred people there probably, and then later in the
- 42:32Speaker 6: day we're going. You know, we're an outside chance in
- 42:34Speaker 6: the derby. You don't want to talk about that.
- 42:36Speaker 2: I don't mind you plugging your YouTube channel because I I, uh,
- 42:41Speaker 2: I think end your app as well. I mean, I
- 42:44Speaker 2: really think you have one of the best podcasts out
- 42:47Speaker 2: there for anybody that will, if not the best for
- 42:50Speaker 2: anybody that wants to dive into horse racing. And because
- 42:54Speaker 2: you're a real educator about it, and you know, if
- 42:57Speaker 2: you want to plug that, racehorses Now.
- 42:59Speaker 6: Well, horse races Now is the app that I conceptualized
- 43:03Speaker 6: and invented. It's got a million downloads in two hundred
- 43:06Speaker 6: and twenty three countries and continues to grow about seven
- 43:09Speaker 6: thousand new users a month.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Wow.
- 43:11Speaker 6: But but horse Races Now kind of led into a podcast,
- 43:15Speaker 6: and and the podcast has got three hundred thousand weekly
- 43:20Speaker 6: uniques and I'm one of them. Yeah, and and I
- 43:23Speaker 6: talk about everything. I'm very blunt, I lay it out.
- 43:26Speaker 6: I don't edge on anything. It's a you know, a
- 43:31Speaker 6: unique format. I mean, I don't know. I'm not sure
- 43:33Speaker 6: exactly how I ended up in that spot other than
- 43:36Speaker 6: this got T Gridge, who's who's our co host, said
- 43:40Speaker 6: you ought to have your own podcasts. And I said, Tea,
- 43:42Speaker 6: I don't have time. He says, give me thirty minutes
- 43:44Speaker 6: a week, and so I give him thirty minutes a week.
- 43:46Speaker 6: And we thought. We talk about everything, and the sport
- 43:50Speaker 6: needs it absolutely. Here's the things that are broken in
- 43:53Speaker 6: horse racing. The media rights is a real issue. The
- 43:57Speaker 6: media rights needs to be opened up to the map.
- 44:00Speaker 6: It's too difficult to actually watch a race anywhere. You
- 44:04Speaker 6: should be able to watch a race anywhere, anytime.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Because you've got to go to multiple apps and I
- 44:08Speaker 2: have so much time trying to find my horses race.
- 44:11Speaker 6: They make it so you have to jump through too many.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Hoops, and yes, what's the easy solution to that?
- 44:16Speaker 6: They need to aggregate it in one spot so that
- 44:19Speaker 6: there's one you just know right exactly where to go
- 44:21Speaker 6: where you can hear it watch it.
- 44:22Speaker 5: Bet on it where you could theoretically like an ESPN three,
- 44:26Speaker 5: all the races on ESPN three or all the races
- 44:28Speaker 5: on FS one.
- 44:29Speaker 3: Is that what you're talking about it we're talking something more.
- 44:30Speaker 6: We would like all of them on horse races now.
- 44:33Speaker 6: But sure, it's an international sport.
- 44:36Speaker 3: I love how he promotes himself.
- 44:38Speaker 6: It's an international sport. You should be able to watch
- 44:41Speaker 6: it internationally. Sure, like we should be able to watch
- 44:43Speaker 6: English racing, Australian racing, Japanese racing. It shouldn't really matter.
- 44:47Speaker 6: But they're really protective of their content, and I think
- 44:52Speaker 6: it's killing the game. Yeah, I mean I think that
- 44:54Speaker 6: when baseball back in the earl or nineteen twenties and
- 44:58Speaker 6: thirties opened up baseball where you could listen to it
- 45:01Speaker 6: on the radio for free, the sport grew, and our
- 45:05Speaker 6: sport won't open it up many they're protecting it there.
- 45:09Speaker 6: They want to, you know, their media rights, protect their mediaites.
- 45:14Speaker 6: Open your media rights. Make it so simple that fans
- 45:18Speaker 6: gravitate to it. But they fans can't learn unless they
- 45:21Speaker 6: can watch. And if you can't watch, you're never gonna learn.
- 45:24Speaker 2: The part that I really appreciate you. You've become along
- 45:27Speaker 2: with Mike Ropoli, very outspoken about horse racing right now
- 45:30Speaker 2: because every time you turn around, you're having horses that
- 45:34Speaker 2: are being disqualified before races.
- 45:37Speaker 6: You want to do, we can talk. I want to
- 45:39Speaker 6: let me finish. They thought on the media rights. Sure
- 45:42Speaker 6: to watch a race today if you're not in the
- 45:45Speaker 6: correct state, Like if you open an ADW account, you
- 45:47Speaker 6: can get all the things that I talked about, but
- 45:49Speaker 6: if you're not old enough you can't. So if you're
- 45:51Speaker 6: a kid, you can't open an ADW account. If you
- 45:54Speaker 6: don't have a credit card, you can't open ADW. If
- 45:57Speaker 6: you're in the incorrect state, you can't watch it. You
- 46:01Speaker 6: can't watch a race because you're in the wrong state Texas,
- 46:04Speaker 6: North Carolina.
- 46:05Speaker 4: That's ridiculous. That could you imagine? It feels like that
- 46:10Speaker 4: with professional sports basketball?
- 46:14Speaker 6: What and you think you think like the sport would say, okay,
- 46:16Speaker 6: we need to probably fix that. Let's just don't open
- 46:18Speaker 6: it up. And I think NAIRA does a better job
- 46:21Speaker 6: on on the right. And then there's another company that
- 46:24Speaker 6: once you pay a subscription to watch it. Now, who's
- 46:27Speaker 6: going to pay a subscription for racing? And they don't
- 46:29Speaker 6: even have Churchill's content. The Churchill said, no, we're not
- 46:33Speaker 6: going to give you that, and so there's a lot
- 46:35Speaker 6: of dynamics.
- 46:36Speaker 10: So switch to the Vets.
- 46:37Speaker 6: Okay, everybody's worried about safety. We're worried about safety every
- 46:42Speaker 6: day with our horse.
- 46:43Speaker 3: Sure you are.
- 46:44Speaker 6: I mean, we horses train differently. It's not any different
- 46:48Speaker 6: than a ballplayer. You know. Some ballplayers come out of
- 46:52Speaker 6: games a little bit beat up or whether especially football
- 46:56Speaker 6: and the Vets okay, they're they're looking at all these
- 47:01Speaker 6: details and they're trying to analyze all this stuff. We
- 47:04Speaker 6: do it every day. We deal with these horses, in
- 47:06Speaker 6: some cases for years on end, the same horse. So
- 47:09Speaker 6: we know those horses. And they come in to look
- 47:11Speaker 6: at him in fifteen seconds and say, no, we're not
- 47:14Speaker 6: gonna let you run. Oh wait a second, I mean,
- 47:17Speaker 6: and that's frustrating. Yeah I know my horse. Yeahbody, you're
- 47:22Speaker 6: saying I don't know my horse, right, I mean, and
- 47:24Speaker 6: then they mean that.
- 47:26Speaker 2: That had to be the most frustrating thing at Breeders'
- 47:28Speaker 2: Cup day.
- 47:29Speaker 6: They have absolute omnipotence over all of it, and they
- 47:33Speaker 6: don't know the horse, and the horse is training great
- 47:36Speaker 6: in our opinion, and they come in and say, well,
- 47:39Speaker 6: he flexes a little bit on this, and after they
- 47:42Speaker 6: flex him eighteen times, of course he's why to borrow
- 47:46Speaker 6: should be one of the most embarrassing things for these
- 47:48Speaker 6: state vets. Ever, they jogged him up one hundred and
- 47:52Speaker 6: fifty two times, because the ownership group counted one and.
- 47:57Speaker 10: Fifty two times.
- 47:57Speaker 6: If you had a jog back and forth, then the
- 47:59Speaker 6: vet that's scratched him in the post parade once having
- 48:03Speaker 6: laid eyes on the horse all week.
- 48:06Speaker 3: That's not right. No, it's not right.
- 48:08Speaker 6: Yeah, it's ridiculous. And so they they they need to
- 48:12Speaker 6: be criticized, and they're wrong way too many times. And
- 48:17Speaker 6: then the other part of it that you don't realize is,
- 48:19Speaker 6: and this is what you need to hear on the show,
- 48:22Speaker 6: is that, Okay, if they put horse on the vets liss,
- 48:24Speaker 6: they make us wait two weeks before they'll even look
- 48:26Speaker 6: at them. And then the two weeks comes and goes
- 48:29Speaker 6: and they still haven't come to look at them. And
- 48:32Speaker 6: then in some cases I've had one horse with six
- 48:34Speaker 6: weeks before they finally came to I can't even breeze horse.
- 48:38Speaker 5: Yeah, it seems like legality issues. I mean, I know
- 48:40Speaker 5: you're what you're signing up for and you got to
- 48:42Speaker 5: play by their rules. But in every other sport, I
- 48:45Speaker 5: don't know, I'd be like, that is not right exactly.
- 48:47Speaker 6: You know, it's it costs these owners of fortune. Oh sure,
- 48:50Speaker 6: owners are going what are we doing? What are we doing?
- 48:52Speaker 10: I said, I can't.
- 48:53Speaker 6: I can't work him until the vets come, and then
- 48:55Speaker 6: the vets, well were too busy. Well, don't put so
- 48:58Speaker 6: damn many horses on, and you wouldn't be so busy
- 49:00Speaker 6: exactly exactly anyway. Yeah, and we don't really even no
- 49:04Speaker 6: matter what I say, it's not making a difference.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Well, that's not necessary saying something that's making a difference.
- 49:10Speaker 5: You put it out there on the podcast with three
- 49:12Speaker 5: hundred thousand downloads. I mean, there's a trickle down effect
- 49:15Speaker 5: to all of this.
- 49:16Speaker 6: I think I think they just said Kenny's, you know,
- 49:18Speaker 6: a little loud mouth.
- 49:20Speaker 5: The part I love about you though, And they're not
- 49:23Speaker 5: wrong about that as well.
- 49:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and here's the same we love that about you
- 49:28Speaker 3: that part.
- 49:28Speaker 6: People are leaving the game over it.
- 49:30Speaker 3: Yeah exactly.
- 49:31Speaker 6: I had I had one client who had three horses
- 49:34Speaker 6: put on within a month, and he said, I got
- 49:35Speaker 6: an idea, sell them all Wow, thirty five head the
- 49:40Speaker 6: guy spending three million a year on rings. He says,
- 49:43Speaker 6: I'm buying a boat. Got out of the game fast
- 49:45Speaker 6: as he could.
- 49:47Speaker 3: Horrible for the sport.
- 49:48Speaker 6: Not the only one. I got a bunch of other
- 49:49Speaker 6: ones the same way.
- 49:50Speaker 3: Yeah, do you have any opinion?
- 49:52Speaker 5: The game talked a lot about the calls. It's everywhere
- 49:55Speaker 5: the c A w's the the AI.
- 49:59Speaker 6: I don't know that. You know, that's not a topic
- 50:01Speaker 6: that I've delved into. I don't know the math on
- 50:04Speaker 6: all that.
- 50:04Speaker 5: For the big races, it's not as big as a
- 50:06Speaker 5: factor just because they can't. But it's basically an AI
- 50:09Speaker 5: software that people are using right up at the last
- 50:12Speaker 5: minute to kind of juke the system. And I've noticed
- 50:14Speaker 5: it on Tuesday and even a little bit yesterday. A
- 50:17Speaker 5: horse that you thought you had a decent number on,
- 50:19Speaker 5: right at the starting gate, it jumps up. It's the favorite.
- 50:22Speaker 5: How's that happening? You won't see it in the oaks
- 50:25Speaker 5: or the derby just cause you know, the poles too big.
- 50:27Speaker 5: But it's an issue if I.
- 50:30Speaker 6: Had to guess, okay, you know, look, a good horse
- 50:33Speaker 6: player usually waits till the last minute to put their
- 50:35Speaker 6: money in because they don't want to affect the odds. Sure,
- 50:38Speaker 6: I would say the CAW's are definitely their analysis. I
- 50:42Speaker 6: guess they'd probably use AI on a lot of it,
- 50:45Speaker 6: but they can be wrong too.
- 50:46Speaker 10: But what would be for me?
- 50:49Speaker 6: The biggest issue is that they're gambling with a rebate. Yes,
- 50:53Speaker 6: and when they're gambling with a rebate, right, that's not fair. Yeah, yeah,
- 50:57Speaker 6: all right, so let the CAW's bet, but don't give
- 50:59Speaker 6: them the rebate. But if you don't give them the rebate,
- 51:02Speaker 6: will they not bet? Yeah? I mean so, so it's
- 51:05Speaker 6: not really fair. The retail pool is going to play
- 51:09Speaker 6: at whatever the takeout is, but cwa's going a rebate
- 51:13Speaker 6: because they're because they're quantity. Sure, I don't know. I
- 51:15Speaker 6: mean yeah, it's definitely something they need to look at.
- 51:18Speaker 6: But the key is is back to back to growing
- 51:21Speaker 6: the sport. If you open the sport and more people
- 51:23Speaker 6: are watching and more people are betting, then the pause
- 51:26Speaker 6: bigger and then the caw has less influence.
- 51:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 51:29Speaker 6: Correct, they won't open it.
- 51:31Speaker 8: Correct, it's the craziest thing.
- 51:32Speaker 10: It is.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about your horse in the Kentucky Derby.
- 51:36Speaker 6: His name is right to Party.
- 51:38Speaker 3: Yes, you will love that.
- 51:40Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, he's gonna get over bet just because of
- 51:42Speaker 6: the name exactly.
- 51:43Speaker 3: How do you feel about him? How's he looking so far?
- 51:46Speaker 6: Do you think it's a really solid horse. He's gonna
- 51:48Speaker 6: need a really fast pace to set up for him
- 51:53Speaker 6: to come late. He's not a fast horse overall. He's
- 51:57Speaker 6: a grinder, right and and you know, look, he's an
- 51:59Speaker 6: outside chance. Am I going in? I went really confident
- 52:03Speaker 6: into the derby in twenty four with Mystic Dan because
- 52:06Speaker 6: misteric Dan was a Maserati. He could turn the corner
- 52:08Speaker 6: on a dime. You know, he was really fast horse
- 52:12Speaker 6: and he knew what to do. This horse just kind
- 52:14Speaker 6: of keeps coming and coming. He doesn't have that turn
- 52:16Speaker 6: of foot. Yeah, so there'll be some horses in front
- 52:19Speaker 6: of him that that are that are gonna have to
- 52:22Speaker 6: do too much early and then him kind of run
- 52:24Speaker 6: him down.
- 52:25Speaker 3: Do you love his text?
- 52:26Speaker 2: Sound he hears horses in the sleep before.
- 52:31Speaker 3: We let you go?
- 52:32Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 52:32Speaker 2: How are you feeling about University Kentucky basketball? Oh?
- 52:35Speaker 3: We could have talked to UK basketball. Oh absolutely, we
- 52:38Speaker 3: talk about that all the time.
- 52:40Speaker 6: But yes, you know, look, I don't have time to
- 52:43Speaker 6: keep up with the portal stuff. I don't know anything
- 52:45Speaker 6: about it. I'm a big supporter of Pope. Yeah, I
- 52:48Speaker 6: mean I think he's a fantastic guy. Yes, this morning,
- 52:51Speaker 6: Pat Kelsey came to the barn. He was at the
- 52:52Speaker 6: barn for.
- 52:53Speaker 3: That's too bad.
- 52:53Speaker 2: He couldn't get him out there quick and somebody want
- 52:58Speaker 2: to lift him up and put him on and then
- 53:00Speaker 2: they realized he was really the head coach of the
- 53:02Speaker 2: uf L.
- 53:03Speaker 6: Know he's got great energy. Pat, you gotta love it.
- 53:05Speaker 6: You know he's been out a couple of times.
- 53:07Speaker 3: He looks like a jockey.
- 53:08Speaker 6: Say, I feel I feel like I'm a trader. But
- 53:10Speaker 6: he brought his U of L recruits to my bar
- 53:14Speaker 6: and he signed them both. Wow.
- 53:17Speaker 3: Well, we gotta get Pop to your barcause Tom.
- 53:19Speaker 6: Tells he knows he's got an advice. Okay, secret named
- 53:25Speaker 6: the horse coach Pope. Yeah, I know you did miracle
- 53:30Speaker 6: when Colin is clutched, but we changed it because he transferred.
- 53:34Speaker 2: Yeah, Peak, you're one of my favorites back here.
- 53:38Speaker 3: I love you.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Thank you so much for coming on a few minutes.
- 53:41Speaker 2: How's your neck doing. You're getting a little better, I hope, Yeah.
- 53:44Speaker 6: Yeah, had three surgeries in November. Yeah, a little bit
- 53:47Speaker 6: of good night.
- 53:49Speaker 3: My former thank you very much.
- 53:51Speaker 6: Five six seven. Oh my god, oh yeah, I'm getting there.
- 53:54Speaker 6: A good luck this Saturday.
- 53:57Speaker 2: All right, as soon as we get back Jason were
- 54:00Speaker 2: this is going to be with us of you know,
- 54:02Speaker 2: some team called the Philadelphia Phillies. I mean, I can't
- 54:05Speaker 2: believe I'm going to interview a guy that beat my
- 54:07Speaker 2: Tampa Bay Rays. We'll see you in a minute for one.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Welcome to Just the Cats with Michael Bennett.
- 54:32Speaker 2: All right, welcome back to Justin Katz of who got
- 54:35Speaker 2: you know, unexpected long term guests today. You know it'd
- 54:38Speaker 2: be nice if you know, forget about that other show KRC.
- 54:41Speaker 2: You need to come join j TC. Okay, I think
- 54:45Speaker 2: you would be good at that. Exactly you should hear.
- 54:49Speaker 3: They offer Rutherford has out to make. Oh boy, okay,
- 54:52Speaker 3: I got you.
- 54:53Speaker 2: But joining us now former Philadelphia Phillies, uh player, and
- 54:57Speaker 2: and and a guy that broke the heart of Michael
- 55:00Speaker 2: Bennett right here named Jason Worth. You know, I'm I'm
- 55:03Speaker 2: one of the biggest Tampa Bay Rays fans. Do you
- 55:06Speaker 2: feel a little sympathetic.
- 55:08Speaker 3: Towards me for what you did to my heart?
- 55:10Speaker 14: Well?
- 55:10Speaker 10: I live down in the area now.
- 55:12Speaker 16: So I don't know if I would say I'm a
- 55:14Speaker 16: raised fan, but I I I definitely, uh definitely, you
- 55:18Speaker 16: know we did we did some good work there at
- 55:19Speaker 16: Tampa back in two thousand and eight.
- 55:23Speaker 10: It's got a warm place in my heart.
- 55:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, thanks, Yeah, the trop I mean it does
- 55:28Speaker 2: warm your heart going there. Have you ever been back
- 55:31Speaker 2: since you won the World Series?
- 55:34Speaker 16: I did a game in the booth with for the
- 55:38Speaker 16: for the Nats last year the year before.
- 55:40Speaker 10: I don't know if I ever played it.
- 55:41Speaker 16: I played there gigs, you know, I always was in
- 55:44Speaker 16: the National League, so it doesn't seem like it.
- 55:46Speaker 10: But maybe maybe we had one series there at some point.
- 55:48Speaker 2: But uh yeah, have you been back as a fan? No?
- 55:51Speaker 10: Absolutely not. Okay, I love it there, but I I
- 56:00Speaker 10: don't really want to go watch a game there.
- 56:02Speaker 16: I was, uh, you know, when you drove by when
- 56:05Speaker 16: the roof was ripped off, I thought that was that
- 56:07Speaker 16: was probably the best look of them.
- 56:11Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, well you know what, let's see the roof
- 56:13Speaker 2: of your head right.
- 56:13Speaker 3: Now and see think it's a great look.
- 56:16Speaker 10: That's a different story.
- 56:18Speaker 3: You might want to explain to everybody what we're talking about.
- 56:20Speaker 16: So yesterday, uh so We've got my first fun with
- 56:24Speaker 16: uh with my syndicate Icon Racing. We we have this horse,
- 56:27Speaker 16: Nikon that was on the AES and uh so not yesterday,
- 56:31Speaker 16: the day before, uh Wit called me and he's like,
- 56:33Speaker 16: looks like there's gonna be a horse that's gonna scratch
- 56:35Speaker 16: and we're gonna get it. So yeah, you know, we
- 56:38Speaker 16: went absolutely bonkers, you know, went crazy. We're celebrating and
- 56:42Speaker 16: uh and he's like, the only catches they're not gonna
- 56:44Speaker 16: announce it till tomorrow morning. So you know, we sent
- 56:48Speaker 16: it and had a great, great night and then we
- 56:50Speaker 16: wake up the morning.
- 56:52Speaker 10: Heads were throbbing and the phone.
- 56:55Speaker 3: Tell us why your heads are.
- 56:58Speaker 16: The phone call from when he calls and he says, hey,
- 57:02Speaker 16: they're not going to scratch and it's not looking good.
- 57:05Speaker 16: And I was like, is there any other you know,
- 57:07Speaker 16: horses that are you know, the vets are He's like, no,
- 57:09Speaker 16: everybody's good. And so it was just like all our
- 57:12Speaker 16: hopes and dreams is right out and now I got
- 57:14Speaker 16: a headache in and my heads. So I was like,
- 57:19Speaker 16: all right, well we're still you know, we got whul
- 57:20Speaker 16: Commedians running on the race after the derby, so we
- 57:24Speaker 16: still have a lot to look forward to, and and
- 57:26Speaker 16: this is just a great week here, whether you have horses.
- 57:28Speaker 6: In or not.
- 57:29Speaker 16: But you know, the thought of being in the Oaks
- 57:31Speaker 16: with our first you know, our first fund, bringing all
- 57:33Speaker 16: these new partners into the sport, and it was kind
- 57:36Speaker 16: of got everybody fired up. People were making plans and
- 57:38Speaker 16: now I got tell everybody, you know, no, So I
- 57:40Speaker 16: still had this this appointment at the salon to get
- 57:43Speaker 16: you know, my hair all dialed in and uh. And
- 57:47Speaker 16: so at like one o'clock in the afternoon, I'm sitting
- 57:50Speaker 16: there at the salon, ladies, you know, cut my hair
- 57:53Speaker 16: or whatever. And then I get the phone call from
- 57:54Speaker 16: w says the horses scratches scratching anywhere officially in the Oaks.
- 57:58Speaker 16: So then it's like, you know, phone calls. I'm going crazy,
- 58:01Speaker 16: I'm all fired up. I'm like holding, I'm telling you
- 58:03Speaker 16: to hold on whatever. And then at some point she
- 58:06Speaker 16: just I think she got tired of waiting on me
- 58:08Speaker 16: with all these phone calls.
- 58:09Speaker 6: But and she just started braiding my hair and I
- 58:13Speaker 6: was like whatever.
- 58:13Speaker 10: And then she's.
- 58:14Speaker 6: She's like, you need you need the you need the
- 58:16Speaker 6: look of a viking.
- 58:17Speaker 3: Of a warriors we're all fired up.
- 58:20Speaker 16: So when I got out of the chair and my
- 58:22Speaker 16: partner can't can He's like, what are you doing? And
- 58:24Speaker 16: now I got like, I've got all these braids in
- 58:27Speaker 16: my hair. I don't know what's going on.
- 58:28Speaker 3: I mean, you look so elegant.
- 58:31Speaker 2: I mean, I just if I could ever make funny,
- 58:33Speaker 2: I would, but i'd scare you just beat the living crack.
- 58:36Speaker 10: Well, look, this is uh, this is the incredible sport.
- 58:38Speaker 16: And these these horses are doing are doing the dirty
- 58:40Speaker 16: work out there, and they're the athletes, and and you know,
- 58:43Speaker 16: I was, you know, I was an athlete for a
- 58:45Speaker 16: long time. I know I know what they're going through.
- 58:47Speaker 16: I know all the training that takes into it. What
- 58:49Speaker 16: I mean, these horses, they're they're literally professional athletes. And
- 58:52Speaker 16: and on race day for me, it's hard, you know,
- 58:55Speaker 16: it's it's it's how I can really feel like I'm
- 58:57Speaker 16: playing again. When those those gates open, you feel like
- 59:00Speaker 16: you're on the you're back on the field, and you
- 59:03Speaker 16: can't replace that doing anything else.
- 59:05Speaker 10: The horse races like brought me back to life.
- 59:06Speaker 16: So I think what happened when the lady was was
- 59:09Speaker 16: doing my hair, she could hear the passion in my
- 59:11Speaker 16: voice and how.
- 59:11Speaker 6: Fired up I was getting.
- 59:13Speaker 16: I don't know where she just starts raiding my hair,
- 59:15Speaker 16: like you need to look like I'm biking for this.
- 59:17Speaker 5: You get so competition cross the species, that's not That's
- 59:22Speaker 5: how I got look in the eye of a horse
- 59:24Speaker 5: and know if it's ready to go.
- 59:27Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 59:27Speaker 16: People, you know when people say, oh, these these horses,
- 59:29Speaker 16: they make them run. Yeah, those horses don't want to run.
- 59:32Speaker 16: They're not gonna run. I can't tell the thing what
- 59:34Speaker 16: to do. Those horses love what they do. They they
- 59:36Speaker 16: do and it's amazing to see, like the transformation that
- 59:40Speaker 16: these horses went from one to two to three and
- 59:42Speaker 16: then they like the follow them in their careers. They
- 59:44Speaker 16: they're just incredible animals. And uh, you know getting when
- 59:46Speaker 16: I got into the sport, I had no idea how
- 59:48Speaker 16: cool the sport wasn't uh And now you know, now talk.
- 59:50Speaker 3: About that for a minute.
- 59:52Speaker 2: What was it that first got you into horse racing?
- 59:55Speaker 16: You know, it's funny. I I started, I moved the floor.
- 59:58Speaker 16: I retired down to Sarasota area. I started playing golf
- 1:00:01Speaker 16: and a couple of guys that play golf with their
- 1:00:03Speaker 16: own Florida Breads and rich Abril was was one of
- 1:00:06Speaker 16: the guys, and so I got in. He got me
- 1:00:08Speaker 16: into this spot. I started buying some horses with him.
- 1:00:11Speaker 16: We had some nice phillies, our our audio Jersey r
- 1:00:13Speaker 16: Cali kim was a was a Steaks winner and uh
- 1:00:16Speaker 16: and that then I went to the sale with him.
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: That's how I got in. I bought Dornick. Uh. I
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: was at the you know, I walked.
- 1:00:21Speaker 16: Into the barn Danny Garden and Bobby Beer and I
- 1:00:24Speaker 16: started telling me I needed to get in on a
- 1:00:26Speaker 16: Derby horse. You know, looking back, I'm like, you know,
- 1:00:29Speaker 16: what a jerk to to try to convince me that.
- 1:00:32Speaker 16: But it worked, you know, it worked in dor on
- 1:00:34Speaker 16: the Hills do was awesome.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: I mean.
- 1:00:37Speaker 10: The heels of Dornk. We did all this.
- 1:00:38Speaker 16: But so getting back to this, this what what we
- 1:00:42Speaker 16: we uh with Nikon our first fun for icon Racing.
- 1:00:45Speaker 10: Nikon's on the aees.
- 1:00:46Speaker 16: She draws in because my former partner, rich Abril, his
- 1:00:50Speaker 16: horse MI missed most scratched. So the guy that got
- 1:00:53Speaker 16: me into the horse race them scratches out of those
- 1:00:55Speaker 16: to get me into the oaks. So it's it's a
- 1:00:56Speaker 16: pretty story. And you know, then and I he that's staff,
- 1:01:01Speaker 16: he trains that horse. And uh we actually had dinner
- 1:01:04Speaker 16: next to those guys last night, and they're gonna go
- 1:01:05Speaker 16: run and what is it, They're gonna go around the
- 1:01:09Speaker 16: Black Eyed Susan with the horse. So yeah, with all
- 1:01:12Speaker 16: the vet issues, you know, the vet stuff, and I'm
- 1:01:14Speaker 16: not gonna get into that, but right they chose to
- 1:01:17Speaker 16: just scratch her out of this, not get vet scratched
- 1:01:20Speaker 16: miss miss the next one.
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: So it's one of those things.
- 1:01:22Speaker 16: It's like, you know, it's come full circle for for
- 1:01:24Speaker 16: me and and uh now to bring new people into
- 1:01:26Speaker 16: the sport of horse racing with Icon Racing, right, uh
- 1:01:29Speaker 16: so with our syndicate and have a horse and our
- 1:01:31Speaker 16: first fun in the in the Kentucky Oaks.
- 1:01:33Speaker 10: It's it's it's more than a dream from.
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: True because I think the part that's fun. You know,
- 1:01:37Speaker 2: this guy right here, I know he would rather with
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: an incredible successful career he had in Major League Baseball
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: A thousand percent. I would bet any kind of money
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: you'd you would want to that he would rather talk
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: about horse racing rather than his career in Major League baseball?
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Is that fair to say?
- 1:01:53Speaker 16: I'm at this point you know, the the question is like,
- 1:01:56Speaker 16: you know, what's your biggest accomplishment? Where would you know?
- 1:01:58Speaker 16: Where would win a win? Ara, It's like the Oaks
- 1:02:01Speaker 16: or the Derby? Where would that you know?
- 1:02:02Speaker 10: Rank?
- 1:02:03Speaker 16: And yeah, right now it's it's the World Series winning
- 1:02:05Speaker 16: World Series of Philly. The Parade in Philly would be two,
- 1:02:09Speaker 16: and then the Belmont three, and then all.
- 1:02:11Speaker 10: The other stuff that that we did would be after that.
- 1:02:13Speaker 16: But if at this point, with all we got going,
- 1:02:15Speaker 16: how much invested we are in the sport, if we
- 1:02:17Speaker 16: would win a race like this, especially with with you know,
- 1:02:21Speaker 16: either icon of Racing or my own personal horses that
- 1:02:24Speaker 16: I own, I think that would supersede win in the world.
- 1:02:27Speaker 7: So if if I told you that you could have
- 1:02:29Speaker 7: won two Derbys, would you have gave up your whole
- 1:02:31Speaker 7: career just be a horse.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: Racing That's a great question.
- 1:02:35Speaker 16: Well, you can't know, because you know, because if if
- 1:02:39Speaker 16: I didn't have that career, I wouldn't so, but yeah,
- 1:02:44Speaker 16: at this point I would say, you know, uh, winning
- 1:02:47Speaker 16: one of these races would would put it at the top.
- 1:02:50Speaker 16: But just being here and having a horse in in
- 1:02:52Speaker 16: these races, Uh, it's so special and it's so cool.
- 1:02:55Speaker 16: There's nothing like it. That walk over in the Kentucky Derby.
- 1:02:59Speaker 16: You know that that that is right up there. It
- 1:03:01Speaker 16: was one of the coolest things you canet. It's the
- 1:03:03Speaker 16: most prestigious thing in sports. And then you go into
- 1:03:05Speaker 16: the paddock and then you you walk the horses out
- 1:03:07Speaker 16: and they play that that Old Kentucky.
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: Home song, Old Kentucky.
- 1:03:12Speaker 10: If that doesn't rip rip your soul out of your chests.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: Or something wrong, and see that's coming from a person,
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: that's coming from a person you know, we take.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Trying to bury that.
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: By the way, Jason, they're trying to get rid of
- 1:03:23Speaker 5: my Old Kentucky Hill. Why uh, they say it's problematic
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: because it was written in the nineteenth century.
- 1:03:29Speaker 16: So you go go in the paddock and you get
- 1:03:31Speaker 16: that feeling when those horses come through there and that
- 1:03:33Speaker 16: song plays. If they're ye, if that doesn't move you,
- 1:03:36Speaker 16: I don't, I don't know what will that is?
- 1:03:38Speaker 8: Like?
- 1:03:39Speaker 16: You know that the tradition and just all of the
- 1:03:41Speaker 16: of the fields come out when that that songs play,
- 1:03:44Speaker 16: that is it's one of the coolest cooler moments and
- 1:03:46Speaker 16: uh in my life. And it definitely has to be
- 1:03:49Speaker 16: at the top of sports.
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: Well I got a fun little radio question. Is Churchill
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: Down's your favorite track to go to? It's okay if
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: it's not. We're locals, but you can you can speak honestly.
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: And then where was your favorite place to hit a
- 1:03:59Speaker 5: home run?
- 1:04:00Speaker 16: So I would say after the Belmont with with door Saratoga,
- 1:04:04Speaker 16: I got a pretty special place, you know, being that
- 1:04:07Speaker 16: it was the first time that Belmont's ever ever been
- 1:04:10Speaker 16: ran to Saratoga. Yeah, you know, I don't I don't
- 1:04:12Speaker 16: even know Saratoga existed, right, I mean literally, Like and
- 1:04:16Speaker 16: then then that place is so cool. Obviously this place,
- 1:04:19Speaker 16: Churchill Downs is awesome. Weg this time of year, this
- 1:04:21Speaker 16: is you know, this is this is the party. This
- 1:04:23Speaker 16: is where you want to be. Keelan has been an
- 1:04:25Speaker 16: awesome place to go to. My oldest son, he goes
- 1:04:27Speaker 16: to the University Kentucky, So we got.
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: University, go to college.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: He's having no fun at all, I would imagine.
- 1:04:34Speaker 16: So a quick story about about him. So he comes
- 1:04:36Speaker 16: home from college. He was going to Belmont playing baseball,
- 1:04:38Speaker 16: and he comes home and uh and first year and
- 1:04:41Speaker 16: we're like, hey, uh, come with we're going to We're
- 1:04:44Speaker 16: going to a horse race, and uh, we we had a.
- 1:04:47Speaker 16: We had a horse run at Tampa Bay Downs, and uh,
- 1:04:49Speaker 16: he looks at us and he's just like, are you
- 1:04:51Speaker 16: guys serious, like like horse racing?
- 1:04:54Speaker 6: Really?
- 1:04:56Speaker 10: What is this a seventeen hundred? I'm like, dude, get
- 1:05:01Speaker 10: in the car.
- 1:05:03Speaker 16: And now you know, he ends up transferring to you know,
- 1:05:05Speaker 16: years later, he is a trans in the UK, is
- 1:05:07Speaker 16: getting uh you know, double major there in finance, and uh.
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: At the track.
- 1:05:12Speaker 16: He's literally at the track constantly. Is at the Barnes
- 1:05:14Speaker 16: Concert of the horses. He was trying to figure out
- 1:05:16Speaker 16: how to take this thing and and spin it into
- 1:05:20Speaker 16: some sort of career in horse racing, and he just absolutely.
- 1:05:23Speaker 6: Fall in love with the that's the place to do.
- 1:05:24Speaker 6: It is so cool.
- 1:05:28Speaker 16: He was playing he was playing baseball in college and
- 1:05:30Speaker 16: has some injuries and then he ends.
- 1:05:31Speaker 10: Up at UK and and all that stuff.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: And well we love that, especially since this is a
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: university Kentucky sports shows.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: You could probably use him at this juncture that cats
- 1:05:40Speaker 5: are struggling at.
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, that was awesome, so cool.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: If you're just joining us Jason Worth former Philadelphia Philly
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: as well as Icon Racing, uh uh owner and which
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: is yes, very much.
- 1:05:55Speaker 4: We need to read at the homer question because I'm.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: Getting into it.
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: So because I think t J asked the phenomenal question,
- 1:06:01Speaker 2: where was your favorite venue to hit a home run?
- 1:06:03Speaker 6: I saw you get that to that, so I, uh right,
- 1:06:07Speaker 6: so I.
- 1:06:08Speaker 3: Hit I hit the question.
- 1:06:10Speaker 16: Rookie year I was with the Dodgers, I did hit
- 1:06:12Speaker 16: a big homer off Wakefield over the Monster. My grandpa
- 1:06:17Speaker 16: played for the Red Sox, so I always wanted to
- 1:06:20Speaker 16: be resting almost sign with Boston.
- 1:06:21Speaker 10: I went to Washington. Was it a knuckleball?
- 1:06:23Speaker 16: I remember that, and I was actually a really good
- 1:06:25Speaker 16: knuckleball hitter over my career, but I was I really
- 1:06:29Speaker 16: loved it to hit in Philadelphia.
- 1:06:30Speaker 10: I played great in Philadelphia.
- 1:06:32Speaker 16: And as as a visitor I went to Washington. Those
- 1:06:35Speaker 16: seven years I was in Washington, I was like the
- 1:06:37Speaker 16: like statistically the best visiting player at at Citizen Bank
- 1:06:41Speaker 16: in philip Philly. Yes, so even as a visitor, I
- 1:06:44Speaker 16: played great there and I got booed mercifully.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: Which probably made you smile, didn't it.
- 1:06:50Speaker 10: It was great.
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: Yeah, knew that was coming exactly. Oh, that's awesome. That's awesome.
- 1:06:55Speaker 5: I'm I'm a Red Sox fan, but you know it's
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: kind of tough to keep up with and can talk.
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: But Fenway is just a special player. Absolutely the feel
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: of history there.
- 1:07:05Speaker 16: I played with Alex Cora. They just they just ripped
- 1:07:07Speaker 16: the whole whole staff out.
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: They did they they want seventeen to one.
- 1:07:12Speaker 10: How do you feel about that? As a Red Sox
- 1:07:14Speaker 10: fans that.
- 1:07:15Speaker 5: I want to I like Cora a lot, and then
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: you know, with like the the cheating allegations, I wanted
- 1:07:19Speaker 5: him to be successful on the other side of everything,
- 1:07:22Speaker 5: and uh, I don't know, it just didn't seem to
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: work out this go around. The thing that's interesting to baseball,
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: and I'm sure there's correlations to barns and horses, is
- 1:07:30Speaker 5: sometimes you just vibe with the people and it works
- 1:07:32Speaker 5: and everybody's jelling.
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: It doesn't really matter the talent.
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: And other times it just doesn't seem and I don't
- 1:07:37Speaker 5: understand it because I don't think you're being coached on
- 1:07:39Speaker 5: a daily in baseball.
- 1:07:40Speaker 16: The problem is they can't get rid of the players
- 1:07:42Speaker 16: they Yeah, that's exactly, yeah, they can't players.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: My hatred for the Red Sox is because they took
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: two of my favorite players from back when you played
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: against him.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: Cole Crawford was one of my all time favorite players and.
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: Then twe yeah who It did work out for him,
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: it did. See.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: My wife loved him because she went to Vanderbilt and
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: he played band.
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: It's like I got to hear this all over again.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: But anyway, Uh, Carl Crawford.
- 1:08:08Speaker 10: Was my comp the year that I signed with in Washington.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: Oh really yeah.
- 1:08:12Speaker 10: So I was actually going.
- 1:08:13Speaker 16: To Boston and then the Nats came in and offered me,
- 1:08:17Speaker 16: uh an extra year and a no trade clause that
- 1:08:19Speaker 16: the Red Sox wouldn't do. And so the Red Sox
- 1:08:22Speaker 16: spun and uh and signed Crawford. They didn't he didn't
- 1:08:25Speaker 16: get the no trade and then a year or two
- 1:08:27Speaker 16: later they traded him.
- 1:08:28Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: Well he wasn't long in Boston.
- 1:08:31Speaker 10: They blew that team up.
- 1:08:32Speaker 16: But it was you know, it was one of those
- 1:08:34Speaker 16: things where I was growing up as when your grandpa
- 1:08:35Speaker 16: played for the Red Sox and the other teams. My
- 1:08:37Speaker 16: mom had all the stories from Boston, so I always
- 1:08:39Speaker 16: I wanted to go to Boston. That was you know,
- 1:08:41Speaker 16: that was when they were They ended up winning in
- 1:08:43Speaker 16: twenty twelve. I was in Washington, in Washington thirteen thirteen, Yeah.
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: Seven seventh, what seven, eleven, thirteen not not eleven, Yeah,
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: but yeah, thirteen was the year that was they did
- 1:08:54Speaker 5: the beard thing that year.
- 1:08:55Speaker 3: All right, Jason, Uh, okay started the beer thing.
- 1:08:57Speaker 10: Well, Johnny Gomes went was with me in walking.
- 1:09:04Speaker 5: I grew a big one and he I played with
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: him in twenty eleven and washing was great.
- 1:09:13Speaker 3: Jason, how can I win some money this weekend? Talked
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: about this is?
- 1:09:17Speaker 16: Uh, this is the one part of the sport that
- 1:09:19Speaker 16: I truly love is the is the the gambling ass Sure, yeah,
- 1:09:22Speaker 16: and so I think this is there's so much opportunity
- 1:09:25Speaker 16: this week to to make make a ton of money.
- 1:09:27Speaker 16: The pools are are you know loaded? And uh the
- 1:09:31Speaker 16: odds on on on good horses are you know favorable?
- 1:09:34Speaker 16: So uh you know, I I really I think, you know,
- 1:09:37Speaker 16: the best horse of the derby is Renegade, even though
- 1:09:39Speaker 16: he has the one post. You know, if you looked
- 1:09:42Speaker 16: at when we were in Dort, when Dora's here, Sierra
- 1:09:44Speaker 16: Leone was the two, you know, and we had Dorrink
- 1:09:47Speaker 16: was you know, he needed to be out front and
- 1:09:49Speaker 16: Sierra Leone can run from the back, and uh we didn't.
- 1:09:52Speaker 16: We didn't get the lead. Mystic Dan cut us off
- 1:09:54Speaker 16: on the rail and took our trip. He wins the derby.
- 1:09:57Speaker 16: So if we would have got the trip, we would
- 1:09:58Speaker 16: we would beat him.
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: In the rail.
- 1:09:59Speaker 16: We broke right and uh and like they saw the
- 1:10:02Speaker 16: opportunity that cuts up. But for Schiero leone, he it
- 1:10:07Speaker 16: being one or two, it didn't matter because he just
- 1:10:08Speaker 16: sucked to the back. And I think that's the type
- 1:10:10Speaker 16: of trip Renegade is gonna get. You know, he's gonna
- 1:10:12Speaker 16: have to he's gonna have a lot to do, but
- 1:10:13Speaker 16: he's you know, those last couple of races, he looks
- 1:10:16Speaker 16: really good and then I like, I like further Ado.
- 1:10:18Speaker 3: Well do you like further Ado? Yeah, of course.
- 1:10:21Speaker 2: You know a lot of people talked about the big Knock.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: It didn't have he didn't have much competition in the Bluegrass,
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: but you know I was there.
- 1:10:28Speaker 16: He aired it was it was like the only other
- 1:10:31Speaker 16: race that I've seen like that was when I was
- 1:10:33Speaker 16: was that heeling for flight line for the British Cut.
- 1:10:36Speaker 16: I mean that was that was like watching Muhammad all
- 1:10:38Speaker 16: leave box in the front. That was one of the
- 1:10:40Speaker 16: that was like my first gun into the horse racing,
- 1:10:42Speaker 16: when my first big races was was I saw Rich
- 1:10:45Speaker 16: strike one of the derby and then wow, that was
- 1:10:47Speaker 16: that was cool to.
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: If flight Line raced again Sovereignty, who would win flight Line?
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: Wow?
- 1:10:53Speaker 16: Wow, that's that was a quick I just saw whye
- 1:10:57Speaker 16: to barrio put?
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: I mean seven year old, Sovereignty is the oldest.
- 1:11:02Speaker 16: Alright, alright, so so all right, so I answer me
- 1:11:05Speaker 16: this white a barrio or a flight line?
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: Flight Line? Okay, there you go, Okay, I have been
- 1:11:13Speaker 3: not working.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: Sovereignty is my favorite horse over.
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: Yeah he does love Soberty's cool.
- 1:11:19Speaker 16: But after after he gets gets be about by white
- 1:11:22Speaker 16: bar can of put them put them in his place?
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: Mage was really good to me a few years ago.
- 1:11:27Speaker 5: And I think the Puma storyline is just so similar.
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: It's hard.
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: And Puma is a small little horse too. You know,
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: you see so many big thorough reads.
- 1:11:35Speaker 5: I think that the Puma is gonna at least be
- 1:11:37Speaker 5: in the moment We Ranman.
- 1:11:38Speaker 10: Ran in the Tampa Bay Derby against the Puma. So
- 1:11:39Speaker 10: I was there for the don't forget Mage is the
- 1:11:44Speaker 10: full brother of the Maje.
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: Well there you go, yeah, all right.
- 1:11:47Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:11:47Speaker 5: And then Hulkamania is probably my like lock of the day,
- 1:11:51Speaker 5: but it's after the derby.
- 1:11:52Speaker 10: The double the double into that is gonna pay.
- 1:11:55Speaker 3: Yes, Yeah, everybody's listening out there, horse.
- 1:11:59Speaker 10: But I could say it all day long. It's still
- 1:12:03Speaker 10: gonna paint no matter what.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: I love my sentimental favorite and right listening knows this.
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: It's been so happy. We had Hans and Anna Maren
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: who owns so Happy, who I love. They're good, good
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: friends of ours. And of course the whole story is
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: Mark Glad. It's the feel good story and that's why
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: people want so happy to win because of what happened
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: with Mark Glad, the trainer and his wife.
- 1:12:25Speaker 10: Yeah, I know, there's just so many good stories. There's
- 1:12:28Speaker 10: a lot of good people.
- 1:12:29Speaker 16: And I think that's the one thing that that I've
- 1:12:31Speaker 16: learned coming.
- 1:12:32Speaker 10: Into the sport.
- 1:12:32Speaker 16: Those those stigmas that have carried around, carried the state around,
- 1:12:36Speaker 16: have have kind of carried through the years, they don't
- 1:12:39Speaker 16: really exist. I mean, this sport is amazing, that people
- 1:12:41Speaker 16: are amazing, The horses are taking care of incredibly.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 1:12:45Speaker 10: Are there some things that the industry can work on? Sure?
- 1:12:48Speaker 16: Are there issues with you know, some of the stuff
- 1:12:50Speaker 16: with the vet scratches, Sure, But I mean every industry
- 1:12:53Speaker 16: has its good parts.
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: And bad.
- 1:12:54Speaker 16: If you only focus on the bad, you'll never see
- 1:12:57Speaker 16: the good. And this sport is incredibly.
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: Good, exactly all right. And your pick on Saturday is
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: gonna be who I like?
- 1:13:04Speaker 16: Uh, I like the exact the box, Renegade, further Ado,
- 1:13:09Speaker 16: the Japanese Horse.
- 1:13:10Speaker 6: There you go.
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: There you have it, Jason, thank you? Yeah about that.
- 1:13:14Speaker 6: I will.
- 1:13:15Speaker 5: I'm running down everything that we've heard, and I'm gonna
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: throw it all and.
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: Try to win the lottery. Here, we're gonna take a break,
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: Jason worth Man. It's a lot of fun having you on.
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: We're gonna take a break right now, stay right there.
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: And got a lot more of just the cats coming out.
- 1:13:39Speaker 14: Now.
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: The mister be mess Man was smarting.
- 1:13:42Speaker 13: You got himself a Tonto.
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: The favorite dial is dead last.
- 1:13:48Speaker 15: He's fifteen like House forty eight and three out of miles.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: As Shackelford leaves the Kentucky the field ended up fire turn.
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: He's in fun dial and a half. Come on to
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: the top of the side.
- 1:14:00Speaker 15: Sam just sax hold of this Lord of the l
- 1:14:03Speaker 15: hats on fire is right there, and thought, there goes
- 1:14:05Speaker 15: any row.
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: Many row is coming down on the fur outside.
- 1:14:09Speaker 14: He's moving quickly after Shakelferd Pat Shackleford on the far
- 1:14:12Speaker 14: outside the Negro.
- 1:14:14Speaker 3: Come on for the compliants on fire?
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: Is there no John Tobada's head benea kingdom?
- 1:14:20Speaker 13: Nothing at the.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: Nials, notting on at which is not Pats.
- 1:14:24Speaker 13: They're in the hostretch and.
- 1:14:26Speaker 17: That shackultered on the mail man row. No sign there's
- 1:14:31Speaker 17: two right am on Kingdom about getting ridings.
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: I'm trying.
- 1:14:36Speaker 17: Time came up on the bres crack unroll Chako heard
- 1:14:42Speaker 17: what pad T comes gonna.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: I could just listen, you know, I'm sitting here, I'm
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: looking at the Twin Spires right now, listening to this,
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: just thinking history. I mean this, this is, this is
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: Christmas to me the older I get t J Walker
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: and you know, coming out here and you probably don't
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: have the love that I do for horse racing because
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: all my life I've come here and I still get
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: you know, talking to Jason Worth here who did not
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: grow up like we did with Churchill downs in our backyard,
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: and here the affinity he has for horse racing. I
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: just love when people didn't grow up with it and
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: they've fallen in love with it, and how they talk
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: about it in such a respectful loving way.
- 1:15:31Speaker 3: I don't have the history and horse racing that you do,
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: but it's our culture.
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: This is very much a little Villion and especially a
- 1:15:39Speaker 5: Kentuckian's culture or six generation little Villions. We've been in
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: the city, really really really Yeah, maybe even longer, but wow,
- 1:15:48Speaker 5: I did not know about you. And there's just something
- 1:15:52Speaker 5: special about this week in this town where, uh, you know,
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: as any city, people are gonna be split on politics
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: and life. And you know, there's different parts of town
- 1:16:02Speaker 5: and there's the rich parts, and there's all sorts of
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: different parts. It just doesn't matter. This week, everybody comes together.
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: You you brush shoulders with people that you're in an
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: elevator with. You know, it's just like that person has
- 1:16:14Speaker 5: more money than I would ever imagine, and you know,
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: this person is probably took the bus to get here,
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: and it's they're in the same spots exactly, and it's
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: a it's a you know a lot of times they
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: may be in different spots, but it's just it's a
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: beautiful week. And I know that people get frustrated with
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: Churchill downs monetizing everything, but they do have this stuff
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: down for the most part, and they've got it figured
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: out and it's expensive, and but if you do come
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: out here, I think you'd have a hard time to
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: have a bad time, you know, you'd have to really
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: work to not enjoy yourself or smile. Hopefully the weather
- 1:16:48Speaker 5: is gonna be good, even if it's not. It's just
- 1:16:49Speaker 5: there's something special about Louisville, Kentucky during the derby.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you're exactly correct, you know, justin I look at
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: this and I think, my goodness, how lucky we are,
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: And I'm just reminded of it that you know, we've
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: got this. We might not have all the big NFL, MLB, hockey,
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: NBA or anything like that, but we do have this,
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: and this city does know how to take care of
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: the guests because we change. Our attitudes completely changed, and
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: we're very welcoming. And this is the way I wish
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: we would act the entire year.
- 1:17:22Speaker 7: Yes, no, no, for sure. I mean I was so
- 1:17:25Speaker 7: a couple of years ago I didn't want to go
- 1:17:27Speaker 7: to the derby. I had my media credential. I was like,
- 1:17:29Speaker 7: I'm not feeling it this year. But then I came
- 1:17:31Speaker 7: to the conclusion, well, who am I to not go
- 1:17:33Speaker 7: if I have a way to go when there's all
- 1:17:35Speaker 7: these people out there that would love to go but
- 1:17:37Speaker 7: don't have an opportunity to. And so I've kind of
- 1:17:40Speaker 7: been in a similar mindset with that again this year,
- 1:17:43Speaker 7: and I told myself yesterday, look, man, you're going to
- 1:17:45Speaker 7: the Kentucky Derby because you have a way to go
- 1:17:47Speaker 7: to the Kentucky Derby. Not everybody has that right, but
- 1:17:50Speaker 7: it is, it's it's awesome. I love being out of here.
- 1:17:53Speaker 7: I love I deal with the same wage people. What
- 1:17:57Speaker 7: do they call those ticket takers? Tellers?
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: Tellers deal with the same one single year. Like, so
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: I've grown a relationships.
- 1:18:04Speaker 3: Because because she's hot.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: He's not wrong exactly, but no, I mean there there
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: really is just something so special.
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: Huge told the story one time on the roll call
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: that like he kept going to the same girl and
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: he maybe flirted a little bit more, and he did
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: admit that, like his liquid courage was also and he
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: was saying that maybe she was starting to flirt a
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: little bit more. And he was like, you know what
- 1:18:30Speaker 5: if I and he was winning too, that's another thing
- 1:18:33Speaker 5: he was winning. She was like, if this one wins,
- 1:18:35Speaker 5: I'm gonna ask for her number. I'm gonna ask her out,
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: or I'm gonna you know whatever. And if I remember
- 1:18:40Speaker 5: the story correctly, it wins and Scoots is like nervous.
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: He's like, I gotta do it, though, I gotta do it.
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: Go there.
- 1:18:46Speaker 5: It's like a big dude has taken it, like she
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: is off the clock. And it was like a totally
- 1:18:53Speaker 5: different and Scoots was like now.
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: And then I came back the next day.
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: We wait, did you ask him out?
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: He has him out.
- 1:18:59Speaker 3: I think you said that you lost. I think he
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: said that you like what you made?
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: One more bet and it was a loser. Oh yeah,
- 1:19:04Speaker 5: I've never not betting with her again.
- 1:19:06Speaker 7: Oh well, And then I came back the next day.
- 1:19:08Speaker 7: I think that was Oaks Day and I came back
- 1:19:10Speaker 7: Derby Day and I wasn't there for Derby Day either.
- 1:19:12Speaker 3: Oh no, connection, you missed. That's how he met Gil
- 1:19:18Speaker 3: and to this day is.
- 1:19:23Speaker 4: Not the case.
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: I love this love story. This is the greatest Derby
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: love story I've ever heard.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: All right, let's get to the Whiskey Thief text line
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: five two fourteen fifty.
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: Who wants to read it for on C is Gil?
- 1:19:36Speaker 10: There So.
- 1:19:39Speaker 7: One says, good morning, mister Bennett. Please don't forget the
- 1:19:42Speaker 7: little people today who take the time to send messages
- 1:19:45Speaker 7: to you all when I.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: Know, I'm so sorry it's not been intentional, but when
- 1:19:50Speaker 2: when I see people walking by here, and and of
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: course I've had a few people that you know, we
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: planned on having on, I just I had to do
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: a done bad job, So please accept my apology.
- 1:20:00Speaker 5: Derby Week, we've had guests on and whatnot. They can
- 1:20:02Speaker 5: ask you a horse racing question, absolutely, because that's another
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: fun thing I think about Derby Week and Churchill Downs
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: is how you know you will talk horse racing. There
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: are shows that will talk horse racing, but the majority
- 1:20:14Speaker 5: do not, with the exception of one week out of
- 1:20:17Speaker 5: the year, fifty one other weeks they won't.
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: But it's funny. Everybody's a horse racing expert. You can
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: talk to a teacher.
- 1:20:22Speaker 5: My daughter's class, they did Derby races the other day.
- 1:20:24Speaker 3: She won, no big deal. So like they're doing a
- 1:20:27Speaker 3: Derby party today.
- 1:20:27Speaker 5: They're sending home Derby picks and whatever horse wins, they
- 1:20:30Speaker 5: get treats on Monday.
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: I just love that.
- 1:20:31Speaker 5: So there's gonna be some four year olds very upset
- 1:20:33Speaker 5: on Monday because their horse didn't win. It's a it's
- 1:20:36Speaker 5: a cool, it's a cool place. It's a special place.
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: I've lost my train of thought telling the daughter story.
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: Where was I going with all this? What day? Is
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: it a question for me?
- 1:20:46Speaker 10: Oh?
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:20:47Speaker 5: So I was listening to a show and they were
- 1:20:49Speaker 5: talking to some trainer and they mentioned how and I
- 1:20:51Speaker 5: don't even remember the horse, it's unimportant, but they said
- 1:20:54Speaker 5: that how the horse got lost out on the track
- 1:20:56Speaker 5: during training.
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: What does that mean mean? And then like literally lost
- 1:20:59Speaker 3: the horse and know where it was.
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: I assume the jockey fell off, the exercise rider fell off.
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: Oh okay, so is what I assume that's when the
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: siren goes off. And see the red lights going around.
- 1:21:09Speaker 4: That one yesterday it was like six minutes.
- 1:21:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: The way the trainer said it was like the horse
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: was very confused, like didn't know.
- 1:21:15Speaker 2: Oh oh, that's completely different. Meaning it just it wasn't
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: feeling comfortable out there on the track. It didn't know,
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: so it felt lost. Meaning is so it's like, okay, yeah,
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: I don't like where I am and I don't like
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: all the crowd because you know, this is.
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: This is why I took it. But I just have
- 1:21:32Speaker 3: not heard that phrase.
- 1:21:33Speaker 2: This is why a lot of trainers, a lot of
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: the exercise riders hate Derby, not that they don't want
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: to be in the Kentucky Derby, it's because you know,
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: normally Churchill Downs is like it is right now, yes,
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: and you get all these crowds, you get all these
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: people that have never been around horses before, and horses
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: get nervous about. Keep keep in mind, these are still
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: little kids. Even though you got some two year olds,
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: you've got some three year olds, four year olds and
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: five years they're still young horses and they don't know
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: they're as nervous as the people are walking up to
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: the horses. So you know, that's a lot of money
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: that is invested in that four legged thing running in
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: front of us. So they don't like it from that aspect,
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: because you know the rest of the time, it's pretty
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: quiet back here. I love coming out, like come here Monday,
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: see what it's like. It's night and day and the
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: horse is a little more calmer. Nobody's here. I love
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: going and just knows this. I'll go over to the
- 1:22:28Speaker 2: stands at five o'clock in the morning, nobody's there. I'm
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: waiting for the ghost of Matt Whinn to talk to
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: come up and talk to me. But it hasn't happened yet.
- 1:22:37Speaker 2: But it's just it's a zen moment. I mean, it's
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: just so relaxing. That's a great question.
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: Well, you know, I just had not heard that phrasing before.
- 1:22:45Speaker 5: That makes sense, and I know that you would know it.
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: Derby one fifty Saturday morning, that Derby morning. I brought
- 1:22:51Speaker 5: my then two year old down here. It was crazy
- 1:22:54Speaker 5: how empty it was on Derby morning, just like really
- 1:22:56Speaker 5: Derby morning, you know, and especially with Oaks being so late,
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: maybe a ghost town, right, it will, but it's actually cool.
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: We got to go pet horses and uh oh we
- 1:23:05Speaker 5: have placed ourselves before the big you know. And I
- 1:23:07Speaker 5: was just like, in twelve hours, yeah, it's hard to
- 1:23:09Speaker 5: even imagine how many people are gonna be here.
- 1:23:11Speaker 3: I'm pumped. I'm jack this guy.
- 1:23:13Speaker 5: You know, I wasn't really feeling the Derby spirit this week.
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: I'm totally I'm in.
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: Are you really good?
- 1:23:18Speaker 3: Good?
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: See, all it takes is just a little time with
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: Michael Bennet's all you get in the mood. All right,
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: let's go ahead and take our last break.
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: By the way, I have a text or it says
- 1:23:26Speaker 4: I need to throw blinkers on you so you don't squirrel.
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not gonna work. I mean my head will
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: be every which way. I will still squirrel with blinkers
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: and I'm you're right. I'm sorry, but uh, it's kind
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: of I'm excited about this.
- 1:23:38Speaker 3: This is fun. Are we gotta take our last break?
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: Do we have any more text after that?
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: And we'll get there's a couple, all right. We'll get
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: back to your whiskey ta text line as soon as
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: we get back as well.
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: TJ walkers with us. I'm so much fun having TJ.
- 1:23:50Speaker 3: It's an honor to be here. We'll see you in
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: a minute.
- 1:23:51Speaker 13: This is just a cat.
- 1:24:04Speaker 12: The toughest stretch Ty is also right care and then
- 1:24:08Speaker 12: Colonel John, Colonel John Coney, let's not feel time town.
- 1:24:13Speaker 3: I'm not tough on.
- 1:24:14Speaker 4: Nice stretch con of tag, Crown.
- 1:24:17Speaker 17: Pulls off the night three plays a second attention of
- 1:24:22Speaker 17: the car.
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: It's not counta tunny is fun final f.
- 1:24:26Speaker 4: And the Kentucky tone It's big, crowning home convincing one
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: and the rending timers is is big crime? Come five, don't.
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Tell you pass a second tennis court paper.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: I love that you've done that all week. This week,
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: I mean, I just you've done a great job with that.
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: I want to tell you right now, justin while you're
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: sitting here in front of me, thank you for helping
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: me this week.
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: It's been a lot of fun. I've enjoyed it. Matthew
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: is with us today, Is that right?
- 1:24:56Speaker 4: That's correct, Matthew.
- 1:24:58Speaker 3: Matt Hey, you know everything you done.
- 1:25:00Speaker 4: Matthew. I know he's been a long week.
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: I know it's been a tough week for you, Matthew.
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: So I want you to know what we've all been
- 1:25:06Speaker 3: thinking about you.
- 1:25:07Speaker 6: Matthew.
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: Yes we do.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: But TJ thank you to you for coming out this morning.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: You know you were texting me and saying that Michael,
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: I can come in.
- 1:25:17Speaker 3: For maybe a little bit. You mean, you're like Nick Rause,
- 1:25:20Speaker 3: You've come in for the whole show. And I'd love
- 1:25:22Speaker 3: that you have. I wish I wish you would do
- 1:25:24Speaker 3: it more often.
- 1:25:25Speaker 5: We got an appraisal about these parts around ten, so
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: the timing worked out. No course, No, Like I told you,
- 1:25:33Speaker 5: this has gotten me in the spirit. It's gotten me
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: in the mood. And that's another thing. Playing these videos.
- 1:25:38Speaker 5: We would do that on a roll call back in
- 1:25:40Speaker 5: the in the days during derby week, and don't you
- 1:25:43Speaker 5: don't you just go when you hear that call, don't
- 1:25:45Speaker 5: you just go back to two thousand and eight where
- 1:25:46Speaker 5: you were, Oh, I mean some of the people that
- 1:25:49Speaker 5: you were with that were no longer with you, some
- 1:25:51Speaker 5: of these derby memories. That's the beautiful thing about Churchill
- 1:25:53Speaker 5: downs is.
- 1:25:54Speaker 6: It's a tradition.
- 1:25:56Speaker 5: Hopefully God willing will have thirty forty fifty more them.
- 1:26:00Speaker 5: Well ideally they'll be doing them forever, but personally you'll
- 1:26:03Speaker 5: have more of them. But you'd think back to the
- 1:26:05Speaker 5: memories that you've made. You know, every derby is special
- 1:26:07Speaker 5: in a certain way, even if it's a terrible derby.
- 1:26:09Speaker 5: It much one that didn't go your way or whatever reason,
- 1:26:12Speaker 5: you remember it. And all you need to know is,
- 1:26:14Speaker 5: oh that horse one that year I remember, you know, oh,
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: exact first one with my wife, the first one with
- 1:26:19Speaker 5: a kid, the first one, uh you know out of radio,
- 1:26:22Speaker 5: which will be this one which will be excited, Well, you.
- 1:26:24Speaker 3: Know what Terry Finley was on with it.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: He remembered nineteen seventy seven, its first Derby ever coming,
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: and I wanted to ask him.
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: And I just like, no, I'm not going to ask.
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: Was that the year that they had the streakers, which
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: was the popular thing back then going up the flat hoole. Yeah,
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: well I don't, but I remember, yes, people would getting
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: naked and go up to fly exactly.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: They couldn't get him down.
- 1:26:47Speaker 5: That was a way to like, you know, shriekers. They're
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: always gonna get you unless they can't get you.
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: Well, I'm not sure he was.
- 1:26:53Speaker 2: Well, he might have been a shrinker, but he was
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: definitely a streaker going up, but he might have shrinked
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: on the way down. Yeah, okay, sorry about that. Uh,
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: that's anyway. Let's talk it. Because TJ. One of the
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: things that I thoroughly enjoy the most is watching your
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: tweets on X I mean you you're you're a man
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: of h He's unhinged, he is, And I enjoyed very
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: much your thoughts right now. Where Mark Pope stands with
- 1:27:20Speaker 2: the University of Kentucky and this upcoming season's roster, well,
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: the the stuff with the.
- 1:27:26Speaker 5: Roster and the program is not good. That's just my opinion.
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: I do.
- 1:27:32Speaker 4: I do like.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: I like Mark Pope.
- 1:27:34Speaker 5: I've said that a million we all do. Good dude,
- 1:27:37Speaker 5: seems like a good representative for the University. Maybe not
- 1:27:40Speaker 5: so much the basketball program, but I like we all
- 1:27:44Speaker 5: wanted him to work. There's no reason we wouldn't want
- 1:27:47Speaker 5: him to work. We'd want him to have a top
- 1:27:48Speaker 5: five team every year. And I really enjoyed following along
- 1:27:52Speaker 5: in year one, and I know some of the resolve
- 1:27:54Speaker 5: that team had with all the injuries and to be
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: able to win some come back in some of those
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: games Gonzaga, and do I really thought he was going
- 1:28:02Speaker 5: to figure this stuff out?
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: Two of us. I've lost all confidence.
- 1:28:07Speaker 5: He just is making mistake after a mistake after mistake,
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: which is fine.
- 1:28:12Speaker 3: We're okay. Kentucky fans aren't.
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: We are crazy, but we're not as unreasonable as we're
- 1:28:18Speaker 5: made out to be. We can be reasonable with logic
- 1:28:21Speaker 5: and facts and being able to understand things. He hasn't
- 1:28:24Speaker 5: built up enough wins, enough good memories for all the
- 1:28:28Speaker 5: terrible things that have happened, all the big losses, the
- 1:28:31Speaker 5: booying in Nashville against Gonzaga. You have to bank some
- 1:28:35Speaker 5: if you get it, If you bank enough goodwill, we
- 1:28:38Speaker 5: can live with that stuff.
- 1:28:39Speaker 3: He hasn't done it.
- 1:28:40Speaker 5: Going to the Sweet sixteen and year one, we thought
- 1:28:42Speaker 5: that that was the jumping off point. Turns out that
- 1:28:45Speaker 5: may have been the peak for Mark Pope, and if
- 1:28:47Speaker 5: that is, then I'm sorry. We can like the person
- 1:28:50Speaker 5: and not be personal, but we want Kentucky basketball to
- 1:28:53Speaker 5: be in the best position to succeed. And our biggest
- 1:28:56Speaker 5: concern when he took over the job is is he qualified?
- 1:28:58Speaker 5: Is he gonna know how to handle this? So he's
- 1:29:00Speaker 5: gonna be able to get the best of the best
- 1:29:01Speaker 5: to come in here and convince them that they need
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: to play for Mark Pope.
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: He can't do it now in three years, could he
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: do it?
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: Maybe?
- 1:29:08Speaker 5: Like I do, think he's learning as he goes, but
- 1:29:11Speaker 5: this transfer portal was a big opportunity for him, and
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: in my opinion, he has failed.
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: As Scoots mentioned on his show, it ain't over.
- 1:29:20Speaker 5: You know, he's got more time and now that's Stokes
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: went elsewhere, he's got a lot of money for eat up.
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: I just how many times can he pull the football
- 1:29:28Speaker 5: away before Charlie Brown has to wise up a little bit?
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: How many times do we need to see that he's
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: just not really cut out, He doesn't have the chops
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: for this for us to realize he's probably not gonna
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: be the guy. Now you're not firing him today. He's
- 1:29:40Speaker 5: getting this season. I'm gonna be a good sport. I'm
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: gonna want Kentucky to win.
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: Why.
- 1:29:43Speaker 3: I'm a bigger UK fan than pretty much anybody I know.
- 1:29:47Speaker 5: I just can see the writing on the wall, and
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: I'm not gonna sugarcoat and I'm not gonna lie right,
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: you know, I'm gonna tell the truth. And I think
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: alarms need to be sounded and they have been right.
- 1:29:56Speaker 5: So like, I'm not gonna pay. I'm not gonna pile
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: on when you're on radio. You got to give your opinion, obviously,
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: but I'm not gonna try to be mean for means sake.
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: But you look at some of these additions, and you're
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: getting due from James Madison, who I like and I
- 1:30:09Speaker 5: think he's a solid piece. You're getting a guy from
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: Washington State who was a very like an average role player.
- 1:30:15Speaker 5: You mix those together, the allure of Kentucky's not just
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: gonna elevate them magically. You need good players, and I
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: just don't think we have enough of them.
- 1:30:21Speaker 3: Michael, Yeah, I.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: Am, as Justin knows, I'm trying my best to stay optimistic.
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: I am going to until we get the final team
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: I'm going to until I see the first few games,
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: and then if it's going the route that you're kind
- 1:30:35Speaker 2: of indicating, then at that point I might have to
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: jump off and say, Okay, I'm not being optimistic anymore.
- 1:30:40Speaker 2: I mean, I do I wish John Caliperry was back
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: in Lexington, know I don't do. I wish that we
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: had Mark Pope succeeding. Absolutely, But if it's not gonna
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: work out, and you know, you got a new athletic
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: director coming in, more than likely in the next year,
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: you'll have a new president coming.
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: In and they're going to want their own people there.
- 1:31:02Speaker 5: Well, and that's they will in time, I think. But
- 1:31:06Speaker 5: also think that a new ad coming in, are they
- 1:31:08Speaker 5: gonna have the stones to say, I'm gonna.
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: Fire the beloved alum who won a championship here.
- 1:31:13Speaker 5: Now maybe he won't be beloved if the season doesn't
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: really go to plan, right, That's gonna be a hard
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: thing for an AD to do, to say.
- 1:31:19Speaker 3: Like, all right, I'm swinging a big stick here and
- 1:31:20Speaker 3: you're out.
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: I'm getting my guy in. If that's what needs to
- 1:31:23Speaker 5: be done, though, then that's what will need to be done.
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: Kentucky basketball can't keep taking on water.
- 1:31:28Speaker 3: Yeah, they can't. And you know, I'll say this, I
- 1:31:31Speaker 3: personally liked.
- 1:31:32Speaker 5: It's not an apples to apples comparison, but I like
- 1:31:34Speaker 5: Mark snoops. And he actually did build up good will UK.
- 1:31:37Speaker 5: That eighteen season, that twenty one season were great. It
- 1:31:40Speaker 5: was just time he didn't have what it took moving forward.
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: I wonder after this year if we'll be having a
- 1:31:45Speaker 5: similar conversation, Pope, we like you, maybe just don't have
- 1:31:48Speaker 5: what it takes moving forward. Yeah, and I think he'd
- 1:31:51Speaker 5: be the first admit it too and be like, I
- 1:31:53Speaker 5: just didn't win enough. I don't I want to be here.
- 1:31:55Speaker 3: But I get it. Yeah. Go back to the Whiskey
- 1:31:57Speaker 3: thief text line. We got a couple more you said,
- 1:31:59Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, Oh I'm so sorry.
- 1:32:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: The Queen's sister Anne was in attendance for the Shrieker
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: maybe Derby one hundred and seventy four.
- 1:32:05Speaker 3: Michael is a cal hater.
- 1:32:06Speaker 6: We know you don't like him.
- 1:32:07Speaker 3: You pull us over and over again. Here we go again,
- 1:32:11Speaker 3: Come on, like Cal, it was time to move on
- 1:32:14Speaker 3: from him.
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: But rather have their roster than our roster, I thought,
- 1:32:18Speaker 5: you rather I have the hope of Oh, we've got
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: three NBA draft picks on this team. Hell yeah, So
- 1:32:22Speaker 5: that was one thing nice about cal Even if you
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: thought he's gonna fail with it, he's gonna he's gonna
- 1:32:27Speaker 5: pull the football away from us again.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: At least he had good players, right at least? Yeah,
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: but you had good players. But you're not going anywhere.
- 1:32:33Speaker 2: I mean, you get to Elite eight, sweet sixteen.
- 1:32:35Speaker 6: Who cames? We could fake it?
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: We thought we were somewhere. I'm not a col hater.
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: I'm just ready for a change. That's it, all right, Uh,
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: justin let's get to it. Your pick for the Derby
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: one is going to be. I am officially rolling with Commandment?
- 1:32:51Speaker 4: Are you really?
- 1:32:52Speaker 10: I am?
- 1:32:53Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:32:53Speaker 6: Why? I don't know.
- 1:32:55Speaker 7: It felt like that horse got a lot of buzz
- 1:32:57Speaker 7: the beginning of the week. I like the odds on it. Okay,
- 1:32:59Speaker 7: but now nobody's really talking about that horse, which makes
- 1:33:02Speaker 7: me feel great.
- 1:33:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:33:03Speaker 3: That was actually my initial first pick, was it?
- 1:33:05Speaker 6: Really?
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: The first read through is Commandment? And then I came
- 1:33:08Speaker 5: over to uh, to the Puma. I think the Puma
- 1:33:10Speaker 5: further ado interesting Wallaby will be top three.
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: There we go again, Chief Wallaby. I'm going to kind
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: of agree with you. I don't think the Puma, even
- 1:33:20Speaker 2: though I know one of the owners really well of
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: the Puma's got the chops.
- 1:33:24Speaker 3: I don't now.
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: I would never tell Bruce that, but Tommy, but yeah,
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: I gotta be. I am going with the sentimental favorite.
- 1:33:31Speaker 6: I just am.
- 1:33:32Speaker 3: I still think Renegade's going to be the horse to beat.
- 1:33:34Speaker 3: But I'm going so.
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: Happy, I hope, so happy.
- 1:33:36Speaker 3: Yeah, because that's what we'll be. So happy.
- 1:33:39Speaker 4: I got Renegade, so happy under Oh you do really
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: so like h TJ.
- 1:33:44Speaker 3: Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Yes, you
- 1:33:48Speaker 3: do a phenomenal job, and I look forward you coming
- 1:33:51Speaker 3: back on the radio.
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: We'll see you next week.
- 1:33:53Speaker 3: Everybody, we're off tomorrow. I have a graceful say derby weekend.
- 1:34:00Speaker 10: Do find a d FO
