- Lucas: Velkommen tilbake, alle sammen. This is Learn Norwegian with Fexingo, episode 148. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna! Hi Lucas, hi everyone. I'm ready for today. Lucas: Great, Luna. Today we're tackling something super essential. A verb you'll use in almost every sentence. Luna: I love the sound of that. What is it? Lucas: It's 'å være'. That means 'to be'. Luna: Å være. To be. Okay, simple enough. Lucas: Let's hear it slowly: å være. Luna: Å være. Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's learn the present tense forms. First: 'jeg er' — I am. Luna: Jeg er. I am. Lucas: Perfect. Let's use it in a sentence. 'Jeg er Lucas.' I am Lucas. Luna: Jeg er Lucas. That's easy. Lucas: Now you try, Luna. Say 'I am Luna'. Luna: Jeg er Luna. Lucas: Yes! That's right. Luna: Nice. So 'jeg er' is I am. Lucas: Now for 'you are' — 'du er'. Du er. Luna: Du er. Lucas: Try: 'You are Luna' — 'Du er Luna'. Luna: Du er Luna. Hmm, but that would be me talking to myself? Lucas: Right, but for practice it works. Let's do a little dialogue. I'll say 'Jeg er Lucas', and you say 'Du er Lucas'. Luna: Okay. Jeg er Lucas... Du er Lucas. Got it. Lucas: Now let's add 'det er' — 'it is' or 'that is'. Det er. Luna: Det er. Lucas: For example, 'Det er en bok.' That is a book. Luna: Det er en bok. Lucas: Or 'Det er fint vær i dag.' The weather is nice today. Luna: Det er fint vær i dag. I like that. So 'det er' is very useful. Lucas: Extremely. Okay, let's practice all three. Listen and repeat after me: jeg er, du er, det er. Luna: Jeg er, du er, det er. Lucas: Now let me ask you: 'Luna, er du sulten?' Are you hungry? Luna: Er jeg sulten? Hmm, I think I am. So 'ja, jeg er sulten'. Lucas: Perfect. 'Ja, jeg er sulten.' You used 'jeg er' naturally! Luna: Oh, I did! That feels great. Lucas: Now let's do a quick scene. Imagine you're introducing yourself to someone new. You say: 'Hei, jeg er Luna.' Luna: Hei, jeg er Luna. Lucas: Then the other person says: 'Hei, jeg er Lucas.' And you can say: 'Hyggelig å møte deg.' Nice to meet you. But that's for another episode. Luna: Right. So 'jeg er' is key for introductions. Lucas: Exactly. Now, let's do a little more. I'll say a sentence, and you tell me if it's 'jeg er', 'du er', or 'det er'. Ready? Luna: Ready. Lucas: Number one: '... sulten.' I am hungry. Luna: Jeg er sulten. Lucas: Number two: '... en katt.' That is a cat. Luna: Det er en katt. Lucas: Number three: '... morsom.' You are funny. Luna: Du er morsom. Aww, thanks Lucas. Lucas: You're welcome. You're doing really well. Luna: This verb is so useful. I can already make lots of sentences. Lucas: And that's the goal. Now, let's talk about something else for a second. If you're finding these episodes helpful and you want to support the show, you can do that at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It's a simple way to say 'this is worth it to me'. Luna: Yeah, every little bit helps keep the show going, and we really appreciate it. Lucas: Exactly. So, back to 'å være'. Let's practice once more. Repeat after me: Jeg er glad. Luna: Jeg er glad. Lucas: Du er flink. Luna: Du er flink. What does that mean? Lucas: It means 'you are clever' or 'you are good'. And it's true. Luna: Oh, thank you. So 'du er flink' is a nice compliment. Lucas: Yes. And 'det er bra' means 'that is good'. Say it. Luna: Det er bra. Lucas: Perfect. So today we learned 'å være' — to be, and three forms: jeg er, du er, det er. Let's do a final round. Listen and say the Norwegian: I am. Luna: Jeg er. Lucas: You are. Luna: Du er. Lucas: It is. Luna: Det er. Lucas: To be. Luna: Å være. Lucas: Fantastic. That's all for today. Practice these phrases between now and next time. Say 'jeg er' when you wake up, 'du er' when you talk to a friend, and 'det er' when you point at something. Luna: Great tip. Thanks, Lucas. And thanks to all of you for listening. Lucas: Takk for i dag, alle sammen. Vi snakkes snart! Luna: See you next time!
