- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show Mike chris Pino, Dan Hurley as
- 0:05we cover Yukon basketball and the Huskies off to a great start nine and one
- 0:10coach fifth in the country ap pole. Now, I think twenty four straight
- 0:14weeks. That's the first time that's happened with Yukon basketball since twenty eleven,
- 0:19twenty twelve. So, I mean, looking at the big picture of this
- 0:23thing where you're at right now, we're only in December. This has to
- 0:27feel pretty good for the coaching staff to gott in this team back from winning
- 0:31a championship to playing at this kind of a high level. Yeah, I
- 0:35think it's definitely a testament, you know, to the staff, and it's
- 0:40the type of guys we've been able to attract here, type of players and
- 0:44what they're all about. Because we lost a lot. You know, we
- 0:47lost not only great players and you know, our biggest producers of points and
- 0:52rebounds and assists and guys that anchored our defense, but we lost all of
- 0:58the leaders, you know, the captains, the guys that led the way.
- 1:02So it speaks to the culture that this group that we've all created together
- 1:07and that what we put our value in you know that we really do treat
- 1:12this this part of the year like it is the the we season and everyone's
- 1:19about winning. You talk about culture and chemistry. It's not always that easy
- 1:26to recreate the kind of chemistry you had last year. And as you just
- 1:30mentioned, losing you know, Andre and losing Adama and of course Jordan Hawkins
- 1:37and Hee malin putting it back together. I guess where does that start when
- 1:42you get your group of players together way in the summer. Do you start
- 1:46on chemistry with guys or do you start with fundamental things? How do you
- 1:49get it rolling again after what you accomplished back in March and April. I
- 1:55think it all begins in the recruiting process, right. It's like, what
- 2:00attracted the player to you in the first place. Was it you know,
- 2:04we're going to make you a star. Was it We're just going to get
- 2:07you to the NBA? Was it just the history of our program? Was
- 2:12it the brand? You know? We go a different way. I mean,
- 2:16you know what we UH. We talk about how hard we work,
- 2:22and we talk about winning, and we talk about personal development, we talk
- 2:27about player development, We talk about UH being in a locker room and on
- 2:31a team with unselfish people that are about winning and us helping you maximize your
- 2:37career and your education. So yeah, I think when you're recruiting is based
- 2:42on getting people that way. They come into you the right way in terms
- 2:46of their mindset and their expectations. You know, when they get here,
- 2:53you know, and then obviously you know our messaging from when they step foot
- 2:57on campuses. We've got to have it into the program that if you do
- 3:00the right things, you know, we're going to win a lot of games
- 3:04and you're going to have your opportunities to increase your value as a player.
- 3:08Dan Hurley with us in the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. Dan, these
- 3:13days it's different on every level in terms of recruiting and the kind of players
- 3:16that get on your rosters. And you look at all the transfers around the
- 3:20country and Ukon's taken advantage of that as well. But when you talk about
- 3:24player development to a young man that hasn't played for you, how do you
- 3:29approach that? How do you present it? Because I'm sure other coaches are
- 3:34presenting the same messaging, but you've been able to get through to guys.
- 3:38It seems to me who are interested in that, and they come here and
- 3:40they're okay with Okay, I'm going to develop here, I'm going to become
- 3:44a better player. I think you're the one to try to avoid the you
- 3:49know, real delusional folks here, you know, like the you know people
- 3:53certainly scare us off. And sometimes you recruit a player for a pretty significant
- 3:57amount of time and it's very public, and we spent some resources on it
- 4:01in terms of traveling and visits and all these things, and then you know,
- 4:06you find out that maybe that individual just is not going to be able
- 4:11to help you win anything. The things they're saying, the mindset, the
- 4:15work ethic. Eventually you realize that, you know, some players just don't
- 4:19fit the way that we do things and the emphasis that we put on old
- 4:26school values, you know, old school values with a modern style of play.
- 4:31You come forty and nine in their last forty nine games. Now you've
- 4:35won fifteen to sixteen dating back to the championship run last year. We're going
- 4:40to talk about a couple of games that we played here recently. There has
- 4:43been some excitement and a course Seaton Hall coming up, and of course Gonzaga
- 4:46that's next but coach Arkansas, before we get to Arkansas Pine Bluff, let's
- 4:51go back to North Carolina at the Garden, because you came off a loss
- 4:56to Kansas, one that could have gone either way. Maybe one shot goes
- 5:00in and you steal the game. Talk about overcoming that emotionally because there's a
- 5:05bit of a letdown. The team loses for the first time. Then you
- 5:09got to come back. You don't have a lot of recovery time. You
- 5:12gotta jump on the bus, come back down to New York within a you
- 5:14know, a day and a half or thereabouts. Talk about that bouncing back
- 5:18emotionally from what happened at Kansas in a fabulous college atmosphere and then go into
- 5:24the Garden to play North Carolina. Yeah, I think coaches all and athletes
- 5:29talk about, you know, with twenty four hour rule, thirty six hour
- 5:33rule, twelve hour rule, right like I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm
- 5:38gonna let go of this last result within a certain period of time, and
- 5:43it doesn't. Yeah, it doesn't really work that way. We haven't lost
- 5:46here in a while. Yeah, So I think, you know, it
- 5:51definitely definitely hurt. We expected to win. We knew it was gonna be
- 5:57a really tough game and an incredible hard place to play. Fog Allen was
- 6:01such a unique environment, and it was it's really worth a lot of points,
- 6:08you know, for the home team. It affects the play of the
- 6:11opponent. And I think, uh, you know, we we we heard
- 6:15here when we lose, and I think I love that about us. I
- 6:18think it's the best way to say it. I love the fact that I
- 6:21come into our building the day after we lose and it's you feel like you're
- 6:26walking into a wake or a funeral because our people here, you know,
- 6:30want to win so bad for Yukon, and you know, we go through
- 6:33that healing process. You watch the film, you see all the things that
- 6:36we could have done differently to win that game at fog Allen, but we
- 6:42were able to. I think thankfully. We had a really big game with
- 6:46Carolina coming up, and we started to get excited about that after probably about
- 6:51thirty six hours. Yeah, and you couldn't you couldn't deny the fact that
- 6:56Carolina was a darn good team coming in to New York on a show against
- 7:00Yukon. So you had very little time to kind of get ready for that
- 7:03We'll talk about North Carolina and much much more with Dan Hurley. This is
- 7:06the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show on Liarfield
