- 1:39So ladies and gentlemen, stop waiting for your
- 1:41life to change, stop waiting for your life
- 1:45to change.
- 1:47I think that's an important thing for us
- 1:49to understand.
- 1:51And it's series five, show 33.
- 1:53Do the thing you've been avoiding.
- 1:56Series five, show 33, episode number five, that
- 1:59is today's granular topic.
- 2:02It's Wednesday, it is August 12th, 2026.
- 2:06Welcome to Inspirations for Your Life.
- 2:09Who am I?
- 2:09Great question.
- 2:10I'm John C.
- 2:12Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:17podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at
- 2:23Montclair State University, a passionate lifelong learner, and
- 2:28now so grateful to be a published author.
- 2:33There is probably something in your life right
- 2:36now that you know you need to handle.
- 2:39Maybe it's a conversation you don't want to
- 2:41have, a message you haven't opened, a phone
- 2:45call you've postponed, or a project that keeps
- 2:48getting moved to tomorrow.
- 2:52The interesting thing about avoidance is that it
- 2:56rarely makes something disappear.
- 2:58Usually it makes it heavier.
- 3:01Today we're going to stop carrying that unnecessary
- 3:05weight and talk about 30 ways to finally
- 3:09face what you've been avoiding.
- 3:12Number one, avoidance, it makes things heavier.
- 3:17The task may take 20 minutes, but avoiding
- 3:19it can occupy your mind's time 20 days.
- 3:24The longer something sits there, the larger it
- 3:28can feel and heavier.
- 3:30Number two, name what you're avoiding, name it,
- 3:34be specific.
- 3:35Don't just say you're stressed, ask yourself what
- 3:40you know you need to handle, but continue
- 3:42postponing, name it, and it gives you something
- 3:46concrete to address.
- 3:48Face the uncomfortable conversation.
- 3:52Some conversations are difficult, but avoiding them often
- 3:56creates more tension.
- 3:58Prepare yourself, remain respectful, and say what genuinely
- 4:04needs to be said.
- 4:06Number four, open the message you've ignored.
- 4:11Okay?
- 4:11Sometimes the unopened message becomes more frightening in
- 4:17your imagination than it actually is.
- 4:21Open it, read it, see the facts, and
- 4:24determine what needs to happen next.
- 4:26Number five, make the call.
- 4:29You know the one, stop rehearsing it repeatedly
- 4:33in your head.
- 4:34People do this so many times, right?
- 4:37Pick up the phone, hello, and allow the
- 4:43actual conversation to replace the imaginary one that's
- 4:49in your head.
- 4:50Number six, begin difficult projects.
- 4:54I know a lot of you're saying, oh,
- 4:56John, you don't know my situation.
- 5:01Don't wait until you feel excited about it.
- 5:05Open the document, organize the materials, create the
- 5:09first section, or complete the first small task.
- 5:13Number seven, stop feeding dread.
- 5:16Every time you repeatedly imagine how terrible something
- 5:21will be, you're feeding the emotion attached to
- 5:25it.
- 5:26Focus on what you actually can control, okay,
- 5:31and what you'll do instead of worrying.
- 5:34Number eight, handle small problems early.
- 5:36A lot of people don't do this, and
- 5:38they're like, oh, my gosh, what am I
- 5:40supposed to do?
- 5:40The problem isn't doing, isn't resolving itself.
- 5:43Well, no, it's not resolving itself.
- 5:45But are you focused on that problem like
- 5:4824-7, or are you thinking about something
- 5:51else?
- 5:51I think that's an important thing for us
- 5:53to be aware of right now.
- 5:55A small issue handled today can prevent a
- 5:59major problem tomorrow.
- 6:02Address things while they're still manageable, whenever possible,
- 6:06that is.
- 6:07Number nine, don't let fear manage your schedule.
- 6:10If fear constantly determines what gets postponed, eventually,
- 6:16your calendar begins reflecting your fears instead of
- 6:20your priorities.
- 6:22Number 10, give discomfort a deadline.
- 6:26I bet you never heard that one before.
- 6:28Tell yourself when you're going to handle it.
- 6:33That's a different thing, right?
- 6:35A deadline turns an uncomfortable intention into a
- 6:40specific commitment that your mind and body is
- 6:44going to get done, okay?
- 6:47I think that's a very important thing, and
- 6:51I think that's really cool to realize that.
- 6:56Let's dive into number 11, shall we?
- 6:59Start with just five minutes.
- 7:01We all have five minutes, right?
- 7:03Five minutes can break enormous resistance.
- 7:05Tell yourself you're only committing to five minutes,
- 7:09and see what happens once you've actually started.
- 7:14Number 12, break intimidating tasks apart.
- 7:19Sometimes, you're not avoiding the task.
- 7:22You're avoiding the size of the task.
- 7:25Break it into smaller pieces and focus only
- 7:28on the next task.
- 7:31Some people I know, they rush the task
- 7:33because they think if they rush it, they
- 7:36won't have to deal with it again, but
- 7:37really, you know what's going to happen?
- 7:38They're going to have to deal with it
- 7:39over and over and over again, and I
- 7:41think that's a very big problem.
- 7:44You're going to have to keep struggling with
- 7:47that because you're going to keep getting the
- 7:49lesson shown to you over and over again.
- 7:52Let's learn the lesson correctly the first time,
- 7:54or it's going to keep repeating.
- 7:56Universe will keep repeating it until you learn
- 7:58it.
- 7:59You probably heard that before.
- 8:00Number 13, stop imagining the worst.
- 8:03We do it.
- 8:03That's what's going to happen, so stop imagining
- 8:05it.
- 8:06Your mind can create an entire disaster before
- 8:09anything has even happened.
- 8:11Don't automatically treat the worst possible outcome as
- 8:16the most likely one.
- 8:18When we change our perspective, we become more
- 8:22positive.
- 8:24Okay, that's important.
- 8:27Deal with reality instead, number 14.
- 8:31Reality gives you facts.
- 8:33Fear gives you predictions.
- 8:35Find out what's actually happening and make decisions
- 8:41based on what?
- 8:46On that information, not other information, not information
- 8:49you supposedly extrapolate into your brain, information that's
- 8:55not even real.
- 8:56I think that's a problem for a lot
- 8:57of people.
- 8:58They get hung up on a story and
- 9:01they make it worse than what it is,
- 9:03and they sabotage themselves.
- 9:06Number 15, finish the lingering task.
- 9:11You know those tasks that remain almost finished
- 9:14for weeks.
- 9:15Sometimes the greatest relief comes from finally closing
- 9:19the loop.
- 9:21Yeah, the loop.
- 9:22Number 16, clear your mental backlog.
- 9:26That's why it's good to take a rest.
- 9:28It's good to actually breathe, really, really good
- 9:32to breathe, okay?
- 9:34That's a very important thing for us to
- 9:37understand.
- 9:38Clear your mental backlog.
- 9:40Unfinished responsibilities consume mental space.
- 9:44Every item you complete gives some of that
- 9:47attention back to you, and you deserve that
- 9:50attention.
- 9:51We want to preserve your energy because when
- 9:55we preserve your energy, you can use it
- 10:00for things that are going to help you
- 10:01become a better version of yourself.
- 10:04Number 17, I ask you to please confront
- 10:09what keeps returning.
- 10:11If you don't bother to learn the lesson,
- 10:13the universe is going to say, hey, wait
- 10:14a minute, you haven't learned the lesson.
- 10:16We're going to keep showing it to you
- 10:17over and over and over and over again
- 10:20because you have not learned the lesson yet.
- 10:23If the same issue keeps coming back into
- 10:26your thoughts, there may be a reason for
- 10:28it.
- 10:29Stop repeatedly pushing it away and determine what
- 10:33needs to be addressed.
- 10:38It's not meant to scare you.
- 10:39It's meant to teach you a lesson, right?
- 10:47It's meant to teach you an important lesson.
- 10:53Number 18, please stop carrying unfinished business.
- 10:58What do I mean by this?
- 11:03Well, unfinished business can follow you everywhere.
- 11:08Handle what you reasonably can so yesterday's responsibilities
- 11:12don't continually invade today.
- 11:17Number 19, difficult doesn't mean dangerous.
- 11:22It means uncomfortable.
- 11:25Discomfort and danger aren't the same thing, guys.
- 11:28A difficult conversation, challenging task, or uncertain decision
- 11:33can feel uncomfortable without actually threatening you.
- 11:40But people put themselves into these fake Pandora's
- 11:46boxes.
- 11:48And although they're fake and they don't exist,
- 11:51your mind believes them because your imagination creates
- 11:56your reality.
- 11:58What we think about, right, Nightingale-Conant, we
- 12:01bring about.
- 12:03Our thoughts create our reality.
- 12:05That's not some superficial nonsense.
- 12:08That is truth backed by science for many,
- 12:11many years, right?
- 12:17A lot of people think it's nonsense when
- 12:20it really isn't nonsense.
- 12:24I think that's a very important thing to
- 12:27understand, okay?
- 12:31Very important thing for us to understand.
- 12:36So what I can tell you is that
- 12:39your thoughts create your reality, hands down.
- 12:47Number 20, make discomfort temporary.
- 12:50That's all it is.
- 12:51Discomfort is something you go through temporarily.
- 12:55It's not something that's going to stay with
- 12:57you forever, right?
- 13:00If you fall and you, let's say, cause
- 13:05your leg to get scraped or knee, it's
- 13:08a little discomforting.
- 13:10But what we've learned later on is that
- 13:13it does actually go somewhere.
- 13:23Pretty cool, right?
- 13:33How does that work?
- 13:40I think it works by us realizing what's
- 13:43happening and knowing that our thoughts create things.
- 13:52Everything in this world, okay, including this computer,
- 13:57lights, everything, started with a single thought.
- 14:05A thought that caused an inspiration, an inspiration
- 14:08that caused me or someone else to take
- 14:11deliberate action to make that thought become a
- 14:15reality.
- 14:18Avoidance can turn temporary discomfort into a long
- 14:22-term burden.
- 14:23Facing something may be uncomfortable now, but completion
- 14:28allows you to move beyond it.
- 14:31Beyond it, beyond it.
- 14:41That's cool, right?
- 14:46Very, very cool.
- 14:48Number 21, reward completion, not avoidance.
- 14:54Avoidance provides immediate relief, which teaches your brain
- 15:00to, guess what?
- 15:04Repeat it.
- 15:06Start recognizing the much greater satisfaction that comes
- 15:14from actually finishing something.
- 15:20Number 22, take the emotion out of starting.
- 15:25You don't need to feel inspired, fearless, excited,
- 15:30or perfectly prepared for anything.
- 15:33You don't need to have the answers for
- 15:34everything.
- 15:36Sometimes you simply begin because the task needs
- 15:39to be done.
- 15:40You learn along the way.
- 15:42Number 23, handle what you postponed.
- 15:46Many people postpone things, but they never seem
- 15:49to get them done.
- 15:51That can frustrate a lot of people because
- 15:53they're not getting them done, because they're finding
- 15:55excuses as to why they shouldn't do something.
- 15:59I think that's an important thing, a very,
- 16:03very important thing for us to understand.
- 16:10It could be about how you're making a
- 16:16huge difference in your life, right?
- 16:20A huge difference that makes you change who
- 16:26and where you are.
- 16:29That's really cool.
- 16:31Number 23, as I said, handle what you
- 16:34postponed and look at what you've repeatedly moved
- 16:38to another day.
- 16:40Choose one item and decide that today is
- 16:44when the postponement ends for good.
- 16:48Can you do that?
- 16:51See, people postpone things and delay things because
- 16:54they get comfort out of knowing we don't
- 16:57have to do it now.
- 17:01But I've said to you that success does
- 17:03not lie in comfort.
- 17:04Success starts to breed in discomfort, not pain,
- 17:10discomfort.
- 17:10You got to just become a little bit
- 17:12out of your shell, push yourself a little
- 17:16bit.
- 17:18Number 24, discover what's easier than expected.
- 17:22How many times have you finally done something
- 17:26and thought, that wasn't nearly as bad as
- 17:29I expected?
- 17:30Give yourself the opportunity to discover that once
- 17:36again.
- 17:39And I think when we do it once,
- 17:41the next time we do like, oh, wait
- 17:42a minute.
- 17:43That wasn't so bad.
- 17:52That wasn't so bad.
- 17:57And I'll tell you that you can make
- 18:00a difference in your life if you truly
- 18:02want to make that difference, right?
- 18:09You can make the difference if you really
- 18:12want to make that difference.
- 18:15That's a key guys, a very, very big,
- 18:20big key.
- 18:22Number 25, stop giving avoided tasks power.
- 18:29Let me say that again.
- 18:30Stop giving avoided tasks power.
- 18:33One more time in case you didn't catch
- 18:35it.
- 18:36Stop giving avoided tasks power.
- 18:40Let's talk about that, okay?
- 18:42So every time something dictates your mood or
- 18:47occupies your thoughts because you refuse to address
- 18:51it now, you're giving it power.
- 18:56Action helps you take that power back.
- 19:00And although it might seem like a very
- 19:02subtle step, you can indeed do this in
- 19:06your life.
- 19:07I'm not gonna tell you that it's gonna
- 19:09be easy.
- 19:09It's gonna be uncomfortable, okay?
- 19:13It's going to be uncomfortable.
- 19:16I think if we understand that, then now
- 19:18we're like, oh, wait a minute.
- 19:19Now I understand like how this happens or
- 19:21why this happened, right?
- 19:24I think that's an important piece for a
- 19:27lot of people.
- 19:28Why this happened?
- 19:29Why do I believe this a certain way,
- 19:31right?
- 19:35How?
- 19:38How do I change my perspective right now?
- 19:47How do I do it?
- 19:50How do I make a difference in people's
- 19:56lives?
- 19:59You become intentional.
- 20:04You become intentional.
- 20:07Number 26, clear one thing off your calendar,
- 20:12your to-do list today.
- 20:15You don't need to solve every unfinished problem
- 20:18tonight.
- 20:20You don't need to do that.
- 20:21Just pick one thing.
- 20:24You can do that, right?
- 20:25Pick one thing, one message, one call, one
- 20:32conversation you're gonna have, one task.
- 20:35Finish it, clear it, check it off your
- 20:37calendar, have it done.
- 20:41That's what gives us power, Pat.
- 20:55That's important, guys.
- 21:00Very important.
- 21:04But you have the power to do that.
- 21:15You have the power to do that more
- 21:18than you actually think.
- 21:19Number 27, relief lives on the other side.
- 21:25There's a particular kind of relief that arrives
- 21:28when something you've been carrying is finally handled,
- 21:33that relief feeling.
- 21:35But you have to move through this comfort,
- 21:37not over it, not around it, through it
- 21:40to reach the other side.
- 21:44Number 28, face it before it grows.
- 21:47If we let something constantly be on our
- 21:51plate and we don't handle it, it gets
- 21:53worse.
- 21:55It gets worse every single time we revisit
- 21:58it.
- 21:59Problems rarely become easier simply because they're ignored.
- 22:05You ignore something, it's not gonna go away.
- 22:08When something requires your attention, address it before
- 22:12time adds unnecessary complexity.
- 22:15I say that to you because a lot
- 22:18of people don't understand the fact that they
- 22:23make their lives harder because they don't understand
- 22:27what's going on.
- 22:29Number 29, freedom often begins with confrontation.
- 22:35Confrontation doesn't have to mean conflict.
- 22:39Sometimes it simply means turning towards something you've
- 22:43been running from and deciding you're ready to
- 22:47deal with it now.
- 22:49Number 30, do the thing you've been avoiding.
- 22:55You probably knew what that thing was before
- 22:58the episode even began.
- 23:00Stop giving yourself another reason to move it
- 23:03into tomorrow.
- 23:06Take the first responsible step today, all right?
- 23:12Take the first responsible step today.
- 23:15As I get ready to close this show,
- 23:17know that, ladies and gentlemen, avoidance is interesting
- 23:20because it promises relief, okay?
- 23:28Don't deal with it right now.
- 23:31Do it tomorrow.
- 23:34Wait until you feel ready.
- 23:37And for a moment, postponing something can feel
- 23:41easier, but it's an illusion because then tomorrow
- 23:47arrives and the one thing is still there.
- 23:52Oh, now you spent another day thinking about
- 23:58it, worrying about it, or feeling guilty because
- 24:02you still haven't handled it yet.
- 24:05Really?
- 24:05Seriously?
- 24:06That's why action can be so freeing.
- 24:10You don't need to solve your entire life
- 24:12today.
- 24:12You don't need to clear every unfinished responsibility
- 24:16before you go to sleep or check every
- 24:18box off, but you can clear one thing,
- 24:21one box, one option.
- 24:23Open the message.
- 24:25Make the call.
- 24:27Begin the project.
- 24:29Have the conversation.
- 24:32Finish the task.
- 24:34Take five minutes and start.
- 24:37Ladies and gentlemen, I'm John C.
- 24:39Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist.
- 24:42I thank you for choosing to join me
- 24:44for another amazing episode of Inspirations for Your
- 24:46Life.
- 24:46And remember, ladies and gentlemen, the thing you're
- 24:50avoiding may be taking more energy to avoid
- 24:56than it would take to actually handle it
- 24:59and resolve it.
- 25:02Stop feeding the dread.
- 25:03Stop carrying the unfinished business with you.
- 25:08Face it before it grows.
- 25:10When we have a meeting that happens, like
- 25:12Robert's Rules, they always say, let's take care
- 25:14of old business first.
- 25:15No new old business, let's move on to
- 25:17new business.
- 25:18Because you see, sometimes, ladies and gentlemen, the
- 25:20relief you've been looking for is waiting on
- 25:24the other side of just one decision.
- 25:27That's all it is.
- 25:29Do the thing you've been avoiding.
- 25:34If you do the thing you've been avoiding,
- 25:37you'll feel lighter.
- 25:38You'll feel free.
- 25:41And the one thing you're going to realize
- 25:42is the next time you have something and
- 25:45you're thinking about avoiding, oh, I don't need
- 25:47to avoid it.
- 25:49If I face it head on, you're going
- 25:53to say, wait a minute, that wasn't so
- 25:54bad.
- 25:56But in my mind, it was worse.
- 25:59You made it worse than what it actually
- 26:01is.
- 26:02People do this their whole lives.
- 26:04And then they wonder why they're not going
- 26:07the right place.
- 26:08They wonder.
- 26:11They wonder that.
- 26:13But it comes down to this whole concept.
- 26:17You know what that concept is?
- 26:22Do the thing you've been avoiding.
- 26:26Is it exercising?
- 26:28Is it eating healthier?
- 26:31Is it forgiving somebody?
- 26:40Is it remembering somebody to call them or
- 26:43spend time with them?
- 26:45What is it you're trying to avoid?
- 26:49Is it the fact that you're worried that
- 26:51maybe you're not right?
- 26:54And your ego is tripping you because you
- 26:57can't get through it?
- 26:59Get over it.
- 27:01Okay, get over it.
- 27:04Do the thing you've been avoiding.
- 27:08Stop waiting for life to change, which is
- 27:11our master topic.
- 27:11And take action, decisive, intentional action.
- 27:18When you keep making steps every day and
- 27:21taking one deliberate intentional action day, you know
- 27:24what happens?
- 27:26Your life starts to change.
- 27:29Now, not overnight, but it does actually change
- 27:32when you realize where you were a while
- 27:35ago.
- 27:35And now you're like, wait a minute, I'm
- 27:37way over here.
- 27:37How'd that happen?
- 27:39Simple.
- 27:39You took one step every day and you're
- 27:43consistent.
- 27:44For success, we need structure and we need
- 27:47consistency.
- 27:48That is a key in our lives.
