- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the Tech Talk Radio Network. Hey,
- 0:03Speaker 1: this is Harold Perrineau, and you're listening to the Geeks
- 0:05Speaker 1: on the Radio, Tech Talk Radio. Welcome to another episode
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I'm Sean DeWeerd. Welcome back.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Now, we have to explain, Justin is not here tonight
- 0:20Speaker 1: because of something we've talked about for the last three weeks.
- 0:23Speaker 1: And it really, it came out of nowhere, didn't it?
- 0:25Speaker 1: It did.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I've been scheming with him all week. We've been talking.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We talked at least three times this past week.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:32Speaker 2: About him buying an RV.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yeah. He did it. So tonight he was going to
- 0:41Speaker 1: go buy it. Actually, you had paperwork and all that stuff. Yeah.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I think they actually did buy it already. I think
- 0:46Speaker 2: they were going to pick it up today. Wow. So
- 0:50Speaker 2: we had a couple of long conversations. My dad gave
- 0:53Speaker 2: him some advice because my dad knows everything about RVs.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And then we talked for probably an hour of just
- 1:02Speaker 2: him talking himself in circles.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:05Speaker 2: About, you know, and then he was trying to get
- 1:08Speaker 2: a third party inspection done on it. And the third
- 1:12Speaker 2: party inspector basically said, here's the list of questions that
- 1:15Speaker 2: we're going to ask. And Justin's like, we already asked
- 1:17Speaker 2: all those and I got a good answer on them.
- 1:18Speaker 2: And he's like, well, then you don't need me. Wow.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That's great.
- 1:22Speaker 2: So, you know, like any army, they're going to find
- 1:26Speaker 2: something they don't like or they're going to find something.
- 1:29Speaker 2: But I think they're going to be fine. It's winterized already,
- 1:32Speaker 2: so they're not going to use it until the spring.
- 1:33Speaker 2: But I think Misa is going to want to go
- 1:35Speaker 2: clean it and all this stuff, I'm sure.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Decorate it, clean it.
- 1:39Speaker 2: If you've ever been to their house, it's got to
- 1:43Speaker 2: be clean.
- 1:46Speaker 1: He'll tell us what he bought. All of that stuff
- 1:50Speaker 1: next week on the show, I'm sure. He called you
- 1:52Speaker 1: and said, okay, Sean, what about this? And then you said, well,
- 1:55Speaker 1: call my dad.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Well, I told him I'd reach out to my dad.
- 1:59Speaker 2: But my dad and I talk about RVs quite a bit.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And I actually talked to him today because I'm looking
- 2:04Speaker 2: at buying a new truck. But he's just very knowledgeable
- 2:08Speaker 2: because he's been doing RVs for six decades.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Because he grew up camping and we grew up camping
- 2:16Speaker 2: and we've gone through dozens of RVs growing up and
- 2:19Speaker 2: they've had, you know, they just upgraded their motor home.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So the motor home they had before they're the one
- 2:24Speaker 2: they have now is, was almost identical to the one
- 2:26Speaker 2: Justin is buying.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Wow.
- 2:28Speaker 2: In terms of size and spec and all that stuff.
- 2:31Speaker 2: So he had a lot of good advice on what
- 2:33Speaker 2: to look for and where to look for it and
- 2:36Speaker 2: check these places for water damage and check this. And right.
- 2:39Speaker 2: You know, the generators got service. So you're good there.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Check the tie. You know, he's, he kind of gave
- 2:44Speaker 2: a bullet pointed rundown of what Justin should check. And,
- 2:47Speaker 2: It's all stuff that I told Justin also. It's like,
- 2:49Speaker 2: check these things. These are like the things you go check.
- 2:51Speaker 2: But I'm excited now because now I can plan a
- 2:56Speaker 2: trip out West and have somebody.
- 2:58Speaker 1: To go out West with. Oh, no, that's cool. Do
- 3:01Speaker 1: people do that? Like they get together, you take your RV,
- 3:04Speaker 1: he gets his RV and you go like on a
- 3:05Speaker 1: road trip.
- 3:06Speaker 2: It's the whole point.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Really? Well, I thought you just go in one RV. No.
- 3:09Speaker 1: But you take him too. Yeah. It, No convoy of RV.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Yeah. You get a convoy.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Um, no, you, you typically go with, I mean, we've
- 3:19Speaker 2: done it with three or four people, three or four campers. Um,
- 3:23Speaker 2: for my birthday this past year, we did two campers, three,
- 3:26Speaker 2: three campers actually. Um, no, we've done it.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And then like where my family goes every year, that's
- 3:32Speaker 2: a dozen campers maybe.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Oh man. So we'll have to get photos. If we
- 3:37Speaker 1: can get them before next, you know, next year time.
- 3:42Speaker 1: we'll do that and put them up on a blog, blog.techtalkradio.com.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Oh, I think Justin's going to start a whole new thing.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I think he and me are going to just travel
- 3:49Speaker 2: and be wanderlust, and they're going to have a podcast,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and he's going to just leave us in the dust.
- 3:53Speaker 2: He's going to be starlinking it from the remote wilderness.
- 3:56Speaker 1: This is what's so bizarre. It's really cool, but I
- 3:59Speaker 1: had a client come into the station here in Green Valley,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and I had to record some commercials for them. They're
- 4:07Speaker 1: a great client. And we were talking, and he started
- 4:09Speaker 1: asking me, because he knows we do this show, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: I do other shows and stuff. And he said, so
- 4:14Speaker 1: what's the value in podcasting? It came out of the blue.
- 4:18Speaker 1: And I said, well, and I started telling him about
- 4:22Speaker 1: how more and more people are podcasting. We're broadcasting. We
- 4:26Speaker 1: also turn this show into a podcast. Basically, it's the
- 4:29Speaker 1: same thing. It's a radio show. There's very little difference
- 4:33Speaker 1: of what you hear on our podcast. But again, for
- 4:36Speaker 1: people who are not in the area, able to pick
- 4:38Speaker 1: up this radio station or any of the other stations
- 4:41Speaker 1: we could be on, They're able to listen via a podcast,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you know, the comfort of their own, their own home,
- 4:47Speaker 1: whether they're listening on Spotify, you can listen on iTunes,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you can listen on iHeart. It makes it kind of convenient.
- 4:53Speaker 1: So I was telling him about, you can have a niche.
- 4:56Speaker 1: He didn't understand it. And I said, you could have
- 4:58Speaker 1: like a hobby and be able to talk about it.
- 5:01Speaker 1: And anybody can have a podcast now. I mean, even
- 5:04Speaker 1: there are even grandmothers, probably some here in Green Valley
- 5:09Speaker 1: that are creating podcasts, talking about their favorite recipes.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Or talking about quilting.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Or quilting, yeah, absolutely. Or gardening or desert living or whatever.
- 5:21Speaker 2: People that like hobbies like to talk to other people
- 5:24Speaker 2: about those hobbies. Yeah. And the best way to enhance
- 5:28Speaker 2: the hobby is to talk about it and to learn
- 5:30Speaker 2: from each other and maybe adapt thinking outside of the
- 5:34Speaker 2: box to improve the hobby. Because that's how you grow, right?
- 5:37Speaker 1: You grow as a community. Yeah.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Community ideals grow the community. That's just how it works.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So there's a lot of clubs and we were talking
- 5:43Speaker 1: about this and I was talking about social media and
- 5:47Speaker 1: there are people who hate social media. Let's face it.
- 5:49Speaker 1: I mean, they hate every aspect of it, but social
- 5:52Speaker 1: media is a great way to get people to suddenly go, Oh, wow.
- 5:54Speaker 1: I didn't know that existed. You know, there's a show
- 5:57Speaker 1: that just celebrated its fifth anniversary that I listened to
- 6:00Speaker 1: called choir practice. And basically it's formerly law enforcement. that
- 6:05Speaker 1: they get together and tell stories. And it's really interesting.
- 6:08Speaker 1: This is like, Oh wow. Somebody may have worked with
- 6:11Speaker 1: the FBI or they worked with the sheriff's department or
- 6:14Speaker 1: they were maybe even here in, in Saudita. I know Tom,
- 6:17Speaker 1: my buddy here who was a former sheriff. He's been
- 6:22Speaker 1: on the show a couple of times and he absolutely
- 6:24Speaker 1: loves it. And he's been on their show. So again,
- 6:27Speaker 1: that's just one of them.
- 6:28Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Do you listen to gaming podcasts, Sean? I don't know
- 6:31Speaker 1: if that's.
- 6:32Speaker 2: So I don't, The only podcasts I've really truly listened
- 6:37Speaker 2: to are the Critical Role podcast, which is a Dungeons
- 6:41Speaker 2: and Dragons podcast. Dodo Born, which is another Daggerheart podcast.
- 6:48Speaker 2: That's a D & D Daggerheart style. Right. And then
- 6:55Speaker 2: Once We Were Spacemen, which is Alan Tudyk and Nathan
- 6:58Speaker 2: Fillion's podcast about their Wait, they have a podcast? Oh,
- 7:02Speaker 2: it's fantastic.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I didn't know they did that.
- 7:04Speaker 2: It's fantastic.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Alan Tudyk is, for anybody who's never seen the show
- 7:10Speaker 1: where he plays an alien, is absolutely.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Resident Alien is such a good show.
- 7:14Speaker 1: It's hilarious. And he plays it perfectly.
- 7:17Speaker 2: But they talk about just like their... It's just a
- 7:21Speaker 2: good human interest piece about Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk's
- 7:26Speaker 2: history in acting and where they got their start and
- 7:29Speaker 2: of course Firefly and the things that spawn from Firefly
- 7:32Speaker 2: and all those types of things too. So, and they
- 7:34Speaker 2: interview people. Usually they bring on a guest every week. Um,
- 7:36Speaker 2: they've had pretty much the entire cast of Firefly on and,
- 7:39Speaker 2: and other executives and stuff throughout the, throughout the industry. But, uh,
- 7:44Speaker 2: it's good. It's hilarious. If you like either of those actors. Um,
- 7:49Speaker 2: but then Caitlin likes her true crime podcasts, right? She
- 7:51Speaker 2: likes the true crime. She likes, um, there's a bunch
- 7:55Speaker 2: of NPR podcasts. Um, science. Yeah. Science versus, um, is
- 8:00Speaker 2: a great podcast. And Kate listens to, listens to a
- 8:04Speaker 2: lot of financial podcasts just about managing money and kind
- 8:08Speaker 2: of just getting a world reviewer of, of how people
- 8:11Speaker 2: handle finances.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 2: But other than that, I don't really listen to a
- 8:15Speaker 2: lot of other podcasts.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It's, it's really strange because we take the radio shows
- 8:21Speaker 1: here at the station. We have a couple that we do. I,
- 8:23Speaker 1: the one I do in the know, and then we
- 8:24Speaker 1: have another one called around the cracker barrel, which is,
- 8:27Speaker 1: it's a great name for a show. They talk about
- 8:30Speaker 1: local issues and local events and whatnot. And it's really
- 8:34Speaker 1: kind of interesting because that listener count is huge. And
- 8:38Speaker 1: not just in Arizona, but around the nation and around
- 8:42Speaker 1: the country and around the world. We'll have spikes where
- 8:46Speaker 1: sometimes we'll see 3,000 downloads in one week of a
- 8:52Speaker 1: local show that people are listening to. And then it
- 8:56Speaker 1: might drop down to 500 or 600. So it's just
- 8:58Speaker 1: really interesting that people, they find something, they like it
- 9:02Speaker 1: and they will continue to come back if it's, you know,
- 9:05Speaker 1: keeps the same thing going, you know? Yeah.
- 9:07Speaker 2: It's just, you gotta be, you have to be repeatable.
- 9:10Speaker 2: You have to be likable. You have to have good
- 9:12Speaker 2: content and you've got to have a good format because
- 9:16Speaker 2: if you just talk about whatever, I mean, some, there
- 9:18Speaker 2: are some shows that work like that. Um, but like
- 9:22Speaker 2: our show is loosely based around technology, the internet and radio.
- 9:27Speaker 2: But it's more about how we deal with it in
- 9:31Speaker 2: our daily lives and how it affects us, right? And
- 9:34Speaker 2: I think that's what people like is it's... We're three
- 9:37Speaker 2: dudes that live on the internet and work in technology
- 9:40Speaker 2: and we're just talking about it.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Yeah. And we have fun with it.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:44Speaker 1: You know, I mean, there are some other shows that
- 9:46Speaker 1: have been great out there that are still out there
- 9:48Speaker 1: that are podcast shows. You know, the Tech Guru. And
- 9:52Speaker 1: then there's a guy that I know who just... he
- 9:56Speaker 1: has like 40 000 subscribers on his youtube channel hey
- 10:01Speaker 1: everybody subscribe to us tech talk radio but no he
- 10:05Speaker 1: does i mean it's i mean it's pretty amazing so
- 10:08Speaker 1: you know when you've been around a while you have
- 10:10Speaker 1: great conversations i think and you have good guests as
- 10:13Speaker 1: well well anyway this guy that came in Starts telling me, well,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I've been thinking about doing a podcast. And I said, well,
- 10:20Speaker 1: what are you thinking of doing? What's your niche? He said, RVing.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I'm not kidding you. I was like, wait a minute.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Have you been listening to our show? He goes, no,
- 10:31Speaker 1: I've heard your show before, but no, I've just, I
- 10:34Speaker 1: love RVing and I thought this might be interesting. So
- 10:37Speaker 1: I told him, we've been talking about that for the
- 10:39Speaker 1: last few weeks. I think that could be a show
- 10:42Speaker 1: that would be really good on the net.
- 10:43Speaker 2: There are, so- when I did some research on buying
- 10:47Speaker 2: our last kid, there's whenever you have to find a
- 10:50Speaker 2: problem or one of you have a problem, you want
- 10:51Speaker 2: to solve it, right? You go to YouTube, you try
- 10:53Speaker 2: and find somebody that's had the same problem or, or
- 10:55Speaker 2: somebody that's knowledgeable in the area you're trying to find.
- 10:58Speaker 2: And there are a lot of bloggers and YouTubers that
- 11:02Speaker 2: are doing podcasting type content for RVing.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:06Speaker 2: And you can kind of curate your algorithm a little
- 11:09Speaker 2: bit by going to those pages and stuff. So sometimes
- 11:11Speaker 2: I see those pages, but, um, it would be kind
- 11:15Speaker 2: of a cool thing to do to like do a
- 11:17Speaker 2: podcast on the road.
- 11:19Speaker 1: You know, now Justin, Justin has the equipment. He's going to,
- 11:22Speaker 1: maybe that could be the next, the next thing that
- 11:25Speaker 1: we do is, uh, well, I say I'd have to,
- 11:27Speaker 1: I don't have an RV, so I'd be the odd
- 11:29Speaker 1: man out there. I'll just produce it.
- 11:32Speaker 2: For you guys.
- 11:32Speaker 1: They have tents. Tents? You can stay in a tent.
- 11:37Speaker 1: That's all he needs is a tent? I don't even
- 11:38Speaker 1: have a tent. I don't even have it.
- 11:42Speaker 2: But I mean, like, if you think, if you look
- 11:43Speaker 2: back to the history of our show.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:46Speaker 2: I've done, I've joined the show from my trips.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Well, that's right. Yeah.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I joined in Yellowstone during like a downpour. I was
- 11:55Speaker 2: in my big orange jacket. That's true.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Now maybe we should add, I should add a little
- 12:01Speaker 1: thing underneath our logo to say, and RVing. Yeah.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Technology. I mean, we've talked about, a lot of pieces
- 12:10Speaker 2: of our, like specifically me, because I'm the only one
- 12:12Speaker 2: that had one. Now Justin is going to take some
- 12:14Speaker 2: of my advice maybe. But we've talked about the level
- 12:17Speaker 2: of tech, like it's changed over the years since I've
- 12:20Speaker 2: been doing this show on what we took versus what
- 12:22Speaker 2: we take now because our kids are older and what
- 12:24Speaker 2: we're going to be taking now that they're even older.
- 12:26Speaker 2: So it'll be interesting to see how Justin handles it
- 12:29Speaker 2: because Eric's 10. Right.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:33Speaker 2: So his need, technology needs are different. Justin, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 2: is going to get Starlink.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Yeah.
- 12:40Speaker 2: So he'll be, they'll always be connected to the internet
- 12:43Speaker 2: in some fashion. So I'm just curious where they're going
- 12:46Speaker 2: to take it first.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Right. Yeah.
- 12:50Speaker 2: They've got so many good places within a day's drive
- 12:54Speaker 2: from them.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I told them they live in Denver for people that
- 12:56Speaker 1: don't know.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I told them I was so envious because they're within
- 13:02Speaker 2: so many great places to RV.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Okay. You drive a couple, you drive, A dozen hours,
- 13:10Speaker 2: you're in Arizona. You drive a dozen hours, you're almost
- 13:12Speaker 2: in California. You drive a dozen hours, you're in Utah.
- 13:15Speaker 2: You drive a dozen hours, you're in Nebraska. If you
- 13:18Speaker 2: come east, you're not getting anything. You're going to be
- 13:19Speaker 2: in Nebraska. The flyover states.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Do people take RVs into New York City?
- 13:26Speaker 2: No.
- 13:29Speaker 1: That probably wouldn't be good.
- 13:30Speaker 2: There's no reason. For one, you wouldn't be able to turn.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah. That would be a trip. No. Well, in Lost
- 13:39Speaker 1: in America, which I told him to watch with Albert
- 13:42Speaker 1: Brooks and Julie Haggerty, that's the whole thing is he
- 13:46Speaker 1: goes to New York to get his job back. That's
- 13:49Speaker 1: what he's trying to do. And he's in New York
- 13:51Speaker 1: with his big old RV. And it wasn't a small one.
- 13:53Speaker 1: It was a giant RV. So people have to watch
- 13:56Speaker 1: the movie. I think it's available on Tubi. So have
- 13:59Speaker 1: you done the Starlink in yours? No. Did you do that?
- 14:03Speaker 2: I don't want Starlink.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I get it for people that do it and they
- 14:10Speaker 2: need to travel and to be connected. That's not the
- 14:13Speaker 2: point for us, right?
- 14:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Yeah, we go places that have decent cell service to
- 14:18Speaker 2: get internet on your phones. But the point is to
- 14:21Speaker 2: not be in the camper. You're outside and you live
- 14:26Speaker 2: out of it, right? So the point is to be disconnected,
- 14:29Speaker 2: be outside, go hiking, go swimming, go dirt biking, whatever.
- 14:34Speaker 1: So... So pulling up to a campground in an RV
- 14:38Speaker 1: and sitting inside watching the game probably defeats the purpose
- 14:42Speaker 1: of RVing?
- 14:43Speaker 2: But that defeats my purpose.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:47Speaker 2: I don't want to dissuade it. If anybody wants to
- 14:49Speaker 2: go and sit at a beautiful state park and watch
- 14:52Speaker 2: Saturday college football or Sunday football, that's their own prerogative, right?
- 14:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:57Speaker 2: They're out. They're RVing. They're enjoying a hobby they like
- 14:59Speaker 2: to do. That's fine. I've seen people do it. I've
- 15:02Speaker 2: seen people roll up, pull a huge... behemoth of a
- 15:06Speaker 2: TV out and hook up a satellite dish, point it
- 15:10Speaker 2: south and tune in a TV and they sit and
- 15:12Speaker 2: watch TV.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, and they sit by a camp. Right.
- 15:16Speaker 2: But they sit by a campfire. They're out. They, you know,
- 15:18Speaker 2: they got out. It's like, whatever. That's, that's not the
- 15:21Speaker 2: way I want to do it, but I'm not yucking
- 15:23Speaker 2: somebody's yum.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:24Speaker 2: I've said that before.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:25Speaker 2: But that's the way they want to enjoy it. That's fine.
- 15:29Speaker 1: So if you could no hold sparred, Sean, if you
- 15:32Speaker 1: could just not worry about gas money, or docking fees,
- 15:38Speaker 1: parking fees, or wherever, where would you go? Lake Louise.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Lake Louise? Where is that?
- 15:44Speaker 2: It's up in Canada somewhere. Oh, really? Kayla and I
- 15:47Speaker 2: have talked about it, and now it's escaped. I know
- 15:49Speaker 2: what it's called. I can't remember where it is.
- 15:52Speaker 1: So up north somewhere. Is it just known for just
- 15:56Speaker 1: being beautiful?
- 15:57Speaker 2: It's in Banff. Yeah, it's near Banff. It is in Canada, obviously.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:03Speaker 2: And I'm trying to figure out actually, you know, where
- 16:05Speaker 2: it is. Alberta.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I'm kind of wondering if we have RVers. And we're
- 16:12Speaker 1: going to get to the tech. We will. But if
- 16:15Speaker 1: there's RVers that ever fly to Scotland or fly to
- 16:19Speaker 1: England and then rent an RV and go see the
- 16:24Speaker 1: countryside there. Because it's beautiful.
- 16:26Speaker 2: They do.
- 16:26Speaker 1: It's gorgeous. That would be something to do too.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So it's the same thing. Some people come from Europe
- 16:31Speaker 2: and come here. You can also take a long boat ride.
- 16:36Speaker 2: I think it's like several days or a week and
- 16:40Speaker 2: ship your RV across. I've seen people do that too.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Wow.
- 16:44Speaker 2: So, but.
- 16:46Speaker 1: That's dedication right there.
- 16:48Speaker 2: So my parents did, this was two years ago now,
- 16:51Speaker 2: a year ago, just over a year ago. They went
- 16:53Speaker 2: all the way up to the tip, tippy top Northern
- 16:56Speaker 2: parts of Canada. They've been, my parents have been to
- 17:00Speaker 2: every contiguous 48 state. Alaska and every Canadian province.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Wow.
- 17:07Speaker 2: In their motorhome.
- 17:08Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Between the two of their motorhomes, right? My mom's hell-bent on,
- 17:12Speaker 2: because they have this map. You flip up the back
- 17:14Speaker 2: storage compartment, and it's got a map of all the
- 17:17Speaker 2: states and all the Canadian provinces, and it's full.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Would you recommend, Sean, for somebody listening right now, they're saying,
- 17:25Speaker 1: you know, honey, maybe you would like it, and they
- 17:27Speaker 1: don't have an RV. Should they rent one and give
- 17:30Speaker 1: it a try?
- 17:31Speaker 2: Yes, but be careful. Oh, okay. So do your due
- 17:35Speaker 2: diligence on who you're renting from and what they cover.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Because there are a lot of horror stories about RV
- 17:42Speaker 2: rentals going awry and things not working properly. You got
- 17:47Speaker 2: to just be careful. But yes, you see RV rentals
- 17:49Speaker 2: all the time. Cruise America, rent this RV. You see
- 17:53Speaker 2: them all the time. And you can rent various sizes. Right.
- 17:59Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I grew up camping, so I don't know any different.
- 18:07Speaker 1: All right. Well, we'll hear from Justin next week, I'm sure.
- 18:11Speaker 1: And we'll talk about that. And we'll see if this
- 18:14Speaker 1: guy who stopped in is going to pick up his show.
- 18:16Speaker 1: I gave him a couple of ideas to start a podcast.
- 18:20Speaker 1: What do you need? I told him Spreaker is one way.
- 18:23Speaker 1: It's on iHeart. It's free. They offer a free ability
- 18:27Speaker 1: for you to get started. You go to Spreaker.com. You
- 18:30Speaker 1: can set up a free account. We're on Spreaker. We
- 18:33Speaker 1: don't use the free account. We have a paid account.
- 18:35Speaker 1: But with a free account, you go on there, you
- 18:38Speaker 1: could set up your podcast and try it out. And
- 18:40Speaker 1: what do you need? That was the question. What do
- 18:42Speaker 1: you need to podcast?
- 18:44Speaker 2: A laptop and a microphone.
- 18:46Speaker 1: That's it.
- 18:47Speaker 2: AirPods.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Yeah, there's free software as well that if you want
- 18:50Speaker 1: to edit it. OBS.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Riverside is what we use. OBS is free to stream
- 18:55Speaker 2: if you want to live stream. YouTube is free.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Yeah, that was his other question, Sean. does somebody wants
- 19:01Speaker 1: to get into podcasting? Do they really have to do video?
- 19:04Speaker 1: And I said, you, I said, you don't, but that's
- 19:06Speaker 1: kind of what a lot of people are doing now
- 19:08Speaker 1: for extended.
- 19:09Speaker 2: So it's, it's kind of, it's, it's worth doing both.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Whether, even if you're just doing radio, like you and
- 19:18Speaker 2: I right now, just, we have our cameras up, we've
- 19:19Speaker 2: got our microphones on, you take the audio and you
- 19:22Speaker 2: put it to the radio, but you also put it
- 19:23Speaker 2: on YouTube, right?
- 19:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 2: There's nothing stopping you from doing both. So if you're
- 19:27Speaker 2: recording it once, there's no sense in why you wouldn't
- 19:30Speaker 2: record the video in case you want to use it.
- 19:32Speaker 2: It's a little extra work, but you could do both
- 19:36Speaker 2: in one go instead of trying to do one or
- 19:40Speaker 2: the other and then add on videos later, et cetera.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I would recommend you just, it doesn't cost that much
- 19:47Speaker 2: to get a camera, a decent camera, and you can
- 19:49Speaker 2: record through it. a free software direct to your computer
- 19:52Speaker 2: the audio and the video are tied together you put
- 19:55Speaker 2: it into a free editing program like davinci resolve or
- 19:58Speaker 2: if you have creative cloud premiere or final cut or
- 20:01Speaker 2: something and um Yeah, then you're good to go.
- 20:05Speaker 1: I will tell you, even, and we made the switch
- 20:08Speaker 1: from Zoom. We used to do this all on Zoom. Oh, yeah.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Well, before that.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Do you remember? Before that? Skype. Oh, that's right, with Skype.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And then I've done interviews with Wirecast before, which I
- 20:21Speaker 1: still have Wirecast, and I like that. But it was
- 20:25Speaker 1: just what logistically was going to work better. And Zoom
- 20:29Speaker 1: got to a point where it was, you paid for it.
- 20:33Speaker 1: But the quality was really bad.
- 20:34Speaker 2: It was terrible.
- 20:35Speaker 1: It was awful.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Unless you had an enterprise-level thing, you were getting like
- 20:43Speaker 2: 480p or something out of it. It was so bad.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Even with my enterprise account, it was only giving us
- 20:50Speaker 2: 720p records.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 20:52Speaker 2: And the quality was terrible.
- 20:55Speaker 1: That's the overall quality, the output quality. So if you're
- 20:57Speaker 1: watching it on a good-sized computer screen, Or even a TV,
- 21:02Speaker 1: if you're putting it up on YouTube, the quality would
- 21:05Speaker 1: look really bad.
- 21:07Speaker 2: The pixels get a lot bigger.
- 21:09Speaker 1: That's why we got the opportunity. My son, Ricardo, who
- 21:13Speaker 1: lives in California, he said, have you looked at Riverside?
- 21:16Speaker 1: And I said, no, it's Riverside. And he told me
- 21:18Speaker 1: about it. So we got in early and started looking
- 21:21Speaker 1: at it. And then we were like, amazed. Well, what
- 21:23Speaker 1: they do now is even more amazing. It's not cheap.
- 21:28Speaker 1: You can use free services. But to get the most
- 21:31Speaker 1: out of it, you're going to spend just under 300 bucks.
- 21:34Speaker 1: But you get the ability to edit, to add footage,
- 21:38Speaker 1: to correct audio, to switch cameras, decide what camera. There
- 21:44Speaker 1: is an AI component, if you want to use it,
- 21:47Speaker 1: in editing where it could say, all right, go to
- 21:48Speaker 1: this person, go to that person, go to that person
- 21:50Speaker 1: when they're talking. And, you know, we kind of It
- 21:54Speaker 1: takes us about four hours to edit the one-hour show.
- 21:59Speaker 1: But it's a matter of going through and picking and
- 22:01Speaker 1: choosing and getting the right audio, right graphic, right shot.
- 22:06Speaker 1: But Riverside FM, and I was talking to Randy Graff
- 22:10Speaker 1: from the Chamber this week, and I showed him a demo.
- 22:13Speaker 1: This is a great program if you're going to do
- 22:15Speaker 1: podcast-type stuff.
- 22:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and I don't want to sugarcoat it. It is work.
- 22:21Speaker 2: It does take effort to do it and to do
- 22:23Speaker 2: it well, right? So don't just think, yes, you can
- 22:26Speaker 2: just hit record on Audacity and plug in your ear
- 22:29Speaker 2: pods or whatever recording device and spit out a track
- 22:32Speaker 2: and go with it. Sure, that will take a little
- 22:35Speaker 2: bit of time. But there's a little bit of production
- 22:39Speaker 2: value that you really want to put into it because
- 22:40Speaker 2: you want to be able to stand apart from the
- 22:42Speaker 2: rest because there's a ton.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I want to make one point, though. With Riverside FM,
- 22:48Speaker 1: I'm talking about how great they are. Yes, they're good. However,
- 22:52Speaker 1: if you're in a situation where you're going to have
- 22:54Speaker 1: somebody with you in the same room. Now, Sean, right now,
- 22:58Speaker 1: for those who don't know, he's in South Bend, Indiana.
- 23:00Speaker 1: I'm in Tucson, Arizona. Justin is in Denver, Colorado. When
- 23:09Speaker 1: we do the show, it's almost like we're all sitting
- 23:11Speaker 1: in the same room. But If you're in the same
- 23:15Speaker 1: room using Riverside, it's a little more difficult because you've
- 23:18Speaker 1: got certain things. I think they're still working on that.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Once they do Wirecast and OBS, it'll be a little different.
- 23:26Speaker 1: OBS is free. You can grab OBS. If you want
- 23:29Speaker 1: to make a donation, you can. It's open source software.
- 23:33Speaker 1: OBS is the best if you don't want to pay
- 23:35Speaker 1: for Wirecast for doing the multi-camera. So you can switch
- 23:39Speaker 1: the camera. You can also record. Can you record ISO?
- 23:43Speaker 1: With OBS?
- 23:46Speaker 2: You can. It's a little bit more complicated to record
- 23:51Speaker 2: ISOs in OBS, but you can run multiple instances of
- 23:54Speaker 2: OBS and record ISOs that way if you had multiple cameras, etc.
- 24:00Speaker 2: More often than not, it's like a program cut, so
- 24:03Speaker 2: whatever's in program. Or you can record the preview, or
- 24:06Speaker 2: you can send it out to NDI or SRT. You
- 24:08Speaker 2: can do all sorts of stuff.
- 24:09Speaker 1: ISO, for those who don't know, means you can record
- 24:12Speaker 1: You know, you have your main camera and then you
- 24:13Speaker 1: can be still re-recording a second camera and a third camera.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Isolated feed is all that means, right? So it's like
- 24:20Speaker 2: Andy can, if I'm talking right now, the video, the
- 24:23Speaker 2: live cut takes over and now I'm on the screen.
- 24:26Speaker 2: But if Andy starts talking, then it goes back to him.
- 24:28Speaker 2: But if Andy starts talking or we are sharing and
- 24:31Speaker 2: you want to see Andy's reaction, he can go in
- 24:33Speaker 2: and then put his camera up instead of mine or
- 24:36Speaker 2: Justin's camera instead of his, et cetera. So it's nice
- 24:38Speaker 2: to have those. I mean, Riverside does that automatically. All right.
- 24:42Speaker 1: We've got to take a quick break. When we come back,
- 24:45Speaker 1: we've got a couple of really good listener questions that
- 24:47Speaker 1: have come in in the last week. I've got a
- 24:49Speaker 1: brand new product to show that we will do that
- 24:52Speaker 1: when we come back with Tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 24:56Speaker 2: I'm Sean DeWerd. You can find us on the web
- 24:58Speaker 2: at techtalkradio.com. We'll be right back.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Now, back to Tech Talk Radio.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Welcome back. My favorite part of the show, listener questions.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I do love taking these in. We get a lot
- 25:11Speaker 2: of feedback on when we help people out and people
- 25:14Speaker 2: write in. They send us a message on Facebook. They
- 25:17Speaker 2: send us X. They comment on our YouTube streams.
- 25:21Speaker 1: I'll tell you, Sean, I like it on our YouTube.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Because we do get the comments and people say, well,
- 25:26Speaker 1: I would have done this. Or maybe do. That we invite.
- 25:30Speaker 1: So we may say, well, here's what might be a solution.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Here's my... you know, somebody may have a different way
- 25:37Speaker 1: of doing it and we're not going to sit there
- 25:39Speaker 1: and say, Oh, we know everything. That is where you,
- 25:42Speaker 1: the viewer, if you're watching it on YouTube, that can
- 25:45Speaker 1: come in handy and we're, we're not opposed to it. So,
- 25:48Speaker 1: you know, that's fine.
- 25:49Speaker 2: So this, one of these questions this week is from
- 25:52Speaker 2: Anne and Saharita.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:54Speaker 2: She says, I have three issues. Oh, we'll answer all three.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I hope. All right. Problem.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Number one, since I've owned a laptop, maybe six years,
- 26:04Speaker 2: I've had problems with the keyboard letters and numbers fading.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I have to keep going over them with a Sharpie,
- 26:10Speaker 2: and I've wondered if I could just replace the keyboard
- 26:12Speaker 2: with one that won't do that. Oh, so she means
- 26:13Speaker 2: like the letters fading.
- 26:15Speaker 1: The letters fading.
- 26:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I can see why that'd be a problem. Not
- 26:22Speaker 2: like fading, like they're not working.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Do they make a cover? Do they make a cover?
- 26:26Speaker 2: Yeah, they probably make like a cell phone cover for them.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think for a regular... For a regular laptop,
- 26:33Speaker 1: probably not. Especially if it's the kind that's embedded in
- 26:37Speaker 1: the laptop. Oh, yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I don't know. It all depends on what kind of
- 26:39Speaker 2: laptop she has. She doesn't specify here. Yes, you can
- 26:43Speaker 2: swap the keyboard. I'm sure you can find an iFixit
- 26:47Speaker 2: page for it. And if you're interested in spending an
- 26:51Speaker 2: hour or more taking screws apart on your laptop and
- 26:56Speaker 2: trying not to break it more than it.
- 26:58Speaker 1: It's like.
- 26:59Speaker 2: You got to weigh the risk, right?
- 27:00Speaker 1: Well, and let's face it too, we live in an
- 27:03Speaker 1: age where you can pop it up on YouTube and
- 27:06Speaker 1: watch a video of that particular model being replaced and
- 27:10Speaker 1: kind of follow along. That might help out. But again,
- 27:13Speaker 1: it depends on your comfort level. If not, take it
- 27:16Speaker 1: to a qualified shop. I know we have one here
- 27:19Speaker 1: in Green Valley that does repairs. SWS has always been good.
- 27:24Speaker 1: There's some others that are in Southern Arizona that would
- 27:27Speaker 1: work or wherever you're listening to us at. find a
- 27:29Speaker 1: local qualified shop that can work for you.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Problem number dos.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Okay. This is problem number two.
- 27:35Speaker 2: I think the touch pad has started to wear out
- 27:37Speaker 2: as it doesn't always do what I want it to
- 27:38Speaker 2: do anymore. And I have to try hitting different areas. Oh, well,
- 27:44Speaker 2: I think you're just wearing it out. I think you're
- 27:46Speaker 2: just wearing out the keyboard. I mean, yeah, it's six
- 27:49Speaker 2: years old. That's an eternity for laptops.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 2: So it's six years old. Now it's not the best
- 27:54Speaker 2: time to buy a computer components right now. We all
- 27:56Speaker 2: know that, but, um, If your touchpad's starting to go,
- 28:01Speaker 2: then you're at the risk of it being a hardware
- 28:03Speaker 2: failure or a driver failure, right? So make sure your
- 28:07Speaker 2: drivers are up to date first. If it still doesn't,
- 28:10Speaker 2: maybe look at killing two birds with one stone and
- 28:12Speaker 2: having somebody replace the whole keyboard. Because likely the keyboard
- 28:15Speaker 2: and the trackpad are a combined unit. So you'll probably
- 28:19Speaker 2: likely replace both at the same time.
- 28:21Speaker 1: All right. So I have an idea here, Sean. The
- 28:25Speaker 1: other thing to check for is swelling.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Ooh, spicy pillow.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Spicy pillow. So what happens is when you have, you know,
- 28:35Speaker 1: especially a six-year-old laptop, if you see it start to
- 28:39Speaker 1: bulging a little at the bottom or maybe even the
- 28:42Speaker 1: lip right underneath that trackpad, depending on what kind of
- 28:44Speaker 1: computer you have, you see it bulging a little, what
- 28:47Speaker 1: happens is that batteries become a pillow, spicy pillow we
- 28:51Speaker 1: call them, and they start pressing up. And it means
- 28:54Speaker 1: that your keyboard, not your keyboard, your trackpad is going
- 28:58Speaker 1: to be less responsive. And that can be actually a
- 29:01Speaker 1: situation that's not good, it's dangerous. And that would be
- 29:04Speaker 1: very important. So that might just be part of it.
- 29:06Speaker 1: If your battery's not retaining its charge, or if it's
- 29:09Speaker 1: only staying on for a certain amount of time, or
- 29:11Speaker 1: it's not charging at all, unless it's plugged in, then
- 29:14Speaker 1: that could be an issue as well.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Problem number three. I think this seals the deal for me.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Okay, all right.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Recently, my cat knocked it off the coffee table onto
- 29:23Speaker 2: the floor. And now I'm seeing a few spots on
- 29:26Speaker 2: the screen that are little black lines. Maybe some of
- 29:29Speaker 2: the pixels have died.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Oh.
- 29:34Speaker 2: I think it's time to cash this one in.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Yeah. So right now, all right, depending on which laptop
- 29:41Speaker 1: she has, right? I know that I've done laptop screen
- 29:45Speaker 1: replacements before, and you're looking anywhere between $ 60 to $ 100,
- 29:49Speaker 1: depending on the laptop. So that's $ 100. For the parts.
- 29:53Speaker 1: For the parts. It says for the parts. The touchpad
- 29:57Speaker 1: is what? Maybe $ 40 if you can find it. And
- 30:01Speaker 1: the keyboards, generally, those are going to be about $ 50
- 30:04Speaker 1: or $ 60. Right.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Again, it depends on if the trackpad's included, if it's
- 30:09Speaker 2: all in one piece.
- 30:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:11Speaker 2: Sometimes you have to replace both. Sometimes you can replace
- 30:13Speaker 2: one or the other.
- 30:15Speaker 1: But if your screen has little black lines in it,
- 30:17Speaker 1: are they going to get worse? Yes. That's the thing.
- 30:20Speaker 1: They will get worse.
- 30:21Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sure.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, you got to keep the cat away
- 30:24Speaker 1: from the coffee table. Now.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Here's something that you could do alternatively. Now, most people
- 30:31Speaker 2: buy a laptop, laptop, to run it on their lap,
- 30:35Speaker 2: on the couch, on their table, in their bedroom, whatever.
- 30:40Speaker 2: You could alternatively buy an external monitor and a wireless
- 30:45Speaker 2: keyboard and mouse and use it as a desktop station
- 30:49Speaker 2: that you don't need to have the screen because you
- 30:52Speaker 2: can just have the screen shut. It'll display on the
- 30:54Speaker 2: external display. Your keyboard and mouse still function as a
- 30:57Speaker 2: keyboard and mouse. You still have full functionality of the
- 30:59Speaker 2: use of the laptop. It's just not portable.
- 31:03Speaker 1: The other thing people have done is they told me
- 31:05Speaker 1: that they've used their laptop in front of the television.
- 31:08Speaker 1: You know, they sit there and they relax in their
- 31:10Speaker 1: comfy chair and they have that. And two things that
- 31:13Speaker 1: I've recommended is, and I'm trying to think of the
- 31:16Speaker 1: manufacturer of them, but they have these laptop desks, basically.
- 31:20Speaker 1: They just fit over your lap. And there you've got
- 31:22Speaker 1: this laptop and the nice little table that you could
- 31:25Speaker 1: move a mouse on, and even a USB trackpad. And
- 31:30Speaker 1: then you could send that video signal to your television,
- 31:35Speaker 1: if it's a recent television with Bluetooth capability, or if
- 31:39Speaker 1: you get the J5 connector, you plug the J5 in there,
- 31:42Speaker 1: you pair your laptop with your TV screen, and there
- 31:47Speaker 1: you go, on the big screen, you've got your laptop, basically.
- 31:53Speaker 2: I've never, I've never understood the logic of doing a
- 31:59Speaker 2: laptop on your lap while you're trying to watch TV.
- 32:02Speaker 2: Like that's just too, I have to, I'm very intentional
- 32:05Speaker 2: about when I use my computer, right? I'm doing something,
- 32:07Speaker 2: I'm recording, I'm playing a game, watching a movie or something.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Like if I'm up from, if I want to watch
- 32:13Speaker 2: something on TV, I'll go upstairs and sit on the couch.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:16Speaker 2: But then I get distracted by my phone or my
- 32:19Speaker 2: kids can distract me or I just start doing stuff
- 32:21Speaker 2: around the house. Like, For my generation, more often than not,
- 32:27Speaker 2: we don't sit in front of the TV anymore.
- 32:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:31Speaker 2: So it's hard because we're so ingrained on constant media.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:38Speaker 2: That it's hard to focus on longer shows. I like
- 32:43Speaker 2: sitting at my desk here working on a project while
- 32:47Speaker 2: I have a show on.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Or I put my headphones on. I've got ear-canceling headphones.
- 32:53Speaker 2: And I'll listen to a show while I do stuff
- 32:54Speaker 2: around the house.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Right.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I rarely do I ever sit on the couch and
- 32:59Speaker 2: watch a show. Caitlin does it.
- 33:01Speaker 1: While you're on your laptop.
- 33:02Speaker 2: She will. While I'm on my laptop, right?
- 33:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Usually I'm sitting on the couch, scrolling on my phone,
- 33:06Speaker 2: reading while a show is on.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Hmm.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Hmm. All right.
- 33:12Speaker 1: So for Ann, you're looking at a hundred bucks for screen,
- 33:15Speaker 1: maybe 50 bucks. Let's say, let's say $ 70 for the
- 33:18Speaker 1: keyboard and maybe $ 50 for a trackpad. You're, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 1: a hundred and something odd dollars.
- 33:26Speaker 2: In parts.
- 33:26Speaker 1: Close to 200. That's just in parts. Labor is going
- 33:29Speaker 1: to be at least.
- 33:30Speaker 2: You're looking at, you're looking at 250 or 300 bones.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Total. Total. And you could buy a brand new laptop
- 33:38Speaker 1: for about 450. That's something to think about. But then,
- 33:42Speaker 1: you know, one of the things that I think people are, well, yeah,
- 33:46Speaker 1: actually her, she has more of her email here. It says,
- 33:49Speaker 1: I'm willing to just go ahead and buy a new one.
- 33:52Speaker 1: But that's a whole hassle. in of itself, as you know.
- 33:57Speaker 1: So maybe you could provide some expert knowledge and advice. Thanks.
- 33:59Speaker 1: And so would eat that.
- 34:01Speaker 2: But I don't think I don't agree with that. I
- 34:04Speaker 2: don't agree that it's. Yes, it's a hassle.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:10Speaker 2: I think it's less of a hassle than trying to
- 34:11Speaker 2: go through the repair process. Well, yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 1: And then also, if your laptop's working and you can
- 34:18Speaker 1: make a backup and you can do, you know, a
- 34:22Speaker 1: backup to. a drive and then move that data over
- 34:26Speaker 1: to a brand new computer. And then you just have
- 34:28Speaker 1: to do your settings. And yeah, that is a bit
- 34:30Speaker 1: of a hassle, but again, it can be done. It's
- 34:33Speaker 1: not like your phone. I love the way the phones work.
- 34:36Speaker 1: You know, you could buy a brand new pixel or
- 34:39Speaker 1: a brand new Apple phone. And when you set it up,
- 34:42Speaker 1: it'll tell you, are you coming from the Apple interface?
- 34:46Speaker 1: Or do you have a, an iCloud backup or you
- 34:49Speaker 1: connecting with a former pixel or Android device? And it
- 34:52Speaker 1: will do it for you. I mean, it just put
- 34:55Speaker 1: them together and it'll have everything moved over.
- 34:57Speaker 2: What I do like about the Apple, specifically the Apple phones, right,
- 35:01Speaker 2: is like it saves all of your settings across your
- 35:05Speaker 2: apps and everything. Now, sometimes when you go to a
- 35:08Speaker 2: new operating system, it wipes out some of those settings.
- 35:11Speaker 2: But you're not going to a blank phone. It's great
- 35:15Speaker 2: because I am a creature of comfort. on my phones, man.
- 35:20Speaker 2: If a thing's not in, if a thing's not where
- 35:22Speaker 2: it's supposed to be, or it doesn't, my muscle memory
- 35:25Speaker 2: doesn't work. I get really frustrated by my phone.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh yeah. I'm the, I'm the same way. If
- 35:32Speaker 1: there's one setting that's not working, forget it. And let's
- 35:35Speaker 1: face it. Sometimes those updates will do that. Suddenly something
- 35:39Speaker 1: doesn't work anymore. And you know, if you feel like
- 35:42Speaker 1: tossing a phone, let's see if in the next couple
- 35:44Speaker 1: of minutes, can we talk about this? The iPhone duo
- 35:47Speaker 1: is now available. people were able to get it, but now,
- 35:51Speaker 1: and this is what everybody's talking about is the crease
- 35:55Speaker 1: or the, the screen problem.
- 35:57Speaker 2: I just don't, I don't, I don't get fold the
- 36:00Speaker 2: foldable phones, right? You are asking for a piece of
- 36:03Speaker 2: technology to work over thousands and thousands of opens and
- 36:12Speaker 2: closes and opens and closes. And, and, and, You don't
- 36:16Speaker 2: think you're going to forget a pen in the middle
- 36:18Speaker 2: of your phone or you're going to any crutch closed.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Or you're going to.
- 36:24Speaker 1: You're going to.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Dirt and crud. I mean, I don't get it. I
- 36:28Speaker 2: don't get the photo phone craze. I don't get it.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Apple has said that it was aware of the issue,
- 36:33Speaker 1: according to sources, and it said it affected a small
- 36:36Speaker 1: number of devices. Now, honest, let's be honest. Let's be fair.
- 36:41Speaker 1: When Android came out with, you know, we saw the
- 36:43Speaker 1: Samsung folds coming out. There were stories about that, too.
- 36:46Speaker 1: where suddenly you would see a crease in it. Our
- 36:49Speaker 1: friends from Verizon had sent us one of the early foldables,
- 36:52Speaker 1: and I didn't see anything like that. I just thought, oh,
- 36:55Speaker 1: that's kind of cool how it opens up. I like
- 36:57Speaker 1: the Duo, the stuff that they put out of what
- 37:00Speaker 1: it could do, and I thought that's kind of neat.
- 37:02Speaker 1: They don't have all the apps working yet to get
- 37:05Speaker 1: the full benefit of the Duo yet, all resizing and
- 37:09Speaker 1: the whole bit. But somebody spends two grand on a
- 37:13Speaker 1: phone because they want to have it, That first weekend
- 37:17Speaker 1: it comes out, they're the same people who upgrade to
- 37:20Speaker 1: that latest OS as soon as it's out. And now
- 37:24Speaker 1: they're being, oh, what's this thing? They got the, I guess,
- 37:28Speaker 1: squiggly lines and whatnot. And it's just not a pretty sight.
- 37:32Speaker 1: Apple says they're going to fix it with the AppleCare warranty,
- 37:34Speaker 1: which I know you always recommend.
- 37:36Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry. I don't buy a $ 1, 000 device and
- 37:41Speaker 2: not have production on it.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 37:43Speaker 2: It's just a no brainer. And with the Apple One
- 37:46Speaker 2: Plus you can get, you can have up to four
- 37:50Speaker 2: devices under. It's a subscription. You pay $ 19 a month.
- 37:54Speaker 2: It's per Apple ID. And you can have a set
- 37:57Speaker 2: number of devices under it that are qualified for AppleCare.
- 38:00Speaker 2: So like my watch, my phone, my MacBook. They're all
- 38:04Speaker 2: covered under this. My Mac Mini, I mean. Right. They're
- 38:08Speaker 2: covered under one fee, one subscription, instead of each individual
- 38:12Speaker 2: device having their own.
- 38:14Speaker 1: So.
- 38:15Speaker 2: That was nice. Caitlin just got a new iPhone. So
- 38:19Speaker 2: she's on the 18 mini or whatever version she's on now.
- 38:23Speaker 2: I'm still on the 13 plus. All right.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Well, that's one of the big stories this week. Hopefully
- 38:30Speaker 1: they'll they say they'll they'll take care of it. We're
- 38:32Speaker 1: going to take a break. We come back. We've got
- 38:34Speaker 1: another question. And I got that cool product to show
- 38:37Speaker 1: you when we come back with Tech Talk Radio. I'm
- 38:39Speaker 1: Andy Taylor.
- 38:40Speaker 2: I'm Shonda Weird. Find us on YouTube at Tech Talk Radio.
- 38:43Speaker 2: We'll be right back.
- 38:44Speaker 1: And now, back to Tech Talk Radio. Hi, this is
- 38:47Speaker 1: Adrienne Barbeau. You're listening to Tech Talk Radio, and you're
- 38:50Speaker 1: going to learn a lot. This is pretty cool to say, but,
- 38:55Speaker 1: you know, Justin reached out to Sean this past week
- 38:59Speaker 1: when he was contemplating the RV purchase. And I will
- 39:03Speaker 1: tell you this, he did send a picture while we
- 39:05Speaker 1: were recording the show. Hold on, he did? Yeah, he did.
- 39:10Speaker 1: You didn't see it? He sent a picture.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Uh, he said it's not the greatest, not the greatest picture,
- 39:15Speaker 2: but it's always in front of his house.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Yeah. He parked it. So let me ask you this, Mr. HOA. Uh,
- 39:21Speaker 1: do you have to get like waivers to park RVs
- 39:24Speaker 1: in front of your house, depending on the HOA? Yes.
- 39:30Speaker 1: You're going to have to look into and check with your,
- 39:33Speaker 1: if you have a homeowners association.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Yeah. You definitely want to look, right? Whether or not
- 39:38Speaker 2: you can store it in your driveway, whether it has
- 39:40Speaker 2: to be covered, whether you can store it within eyesight
- 39:43Speaker 2: or whether it has to be in a garage or
- 39:45Speaker 2: whether it, boats, trailers, RVs, motorhomes, whatever. scooters, like anything
- 39:50Speaker 2: like that. It's all covered in our HOAs, right? And
- 39:52Speaker 2: it's fine. Boats are the biggest problem because people just
- 39:55Speaker 2: use boats all summer long.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 39:58Speaker 2: But the big things for us is we pay an
- 40:02Speaker 2: outdoor storage. It's like two miles from our house. It's
- 40:05Speaker 2: an open field storage, fenced. It's nice. We store it
- 40:09Speaker 2: there when we're not using it in the summertime. I
- 40:12Speaker 2: could drive, pick it up, bring it back to the house.
- 40:13Speaker 2: We pack it up and go.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Something to think about. But the fun thing about this
- 40:18Speaker 1: is You know, Justin contacts you, says, you know, hey,
- 40:21Speaker 1: what do I do? I also reached out to Sean
- 40:23Speaker 1: this week. So last week I was asked to do
- 40:28Speaker 1: a video project, video and film. And it was going
- 40:31Speaker 1: to be outdoors at night. I've done a lot of
- 40:33Speaker 1: outdoors during the day. I have done the graph. I
- 40:37Speaker 1: did a Saludita high school graduation years ago and different equipment.
- 40:42Speaker 1: And I use a Canon 7D DSLR, which I love,
- 40:46Speaker 1: love that camera. I have a JVC 4K, which I
- 40:51Speaker 1: absolutely love. It's a video camera. And then I was
- 40:54Speaker 1: going to take both of them out and see which
- 40:56Speaker 1: one worked better. And I was asking Sean, you know,
- 40:59Speaker 1: I like the warmth that you get with a Canon
- 41:01Speaker 1: DSLR camera. It just looks so good. It has that
- 41:04Speaker 1: warm feel to it. And then I did a little
- 41:08Speaker 1: research on the proper settings for nighttime, what shutter speed, ISO,
- 41:13Speaker 1: what do you set it for? And you can find
- 41:15Speaker 1: all of that online. And I asked Sean. And Sean,
- 41:18Speaker 1: you were pretty much, well, if you feel comfortable with
- 41:20Speaker 1: that warm look, then yeah, use that. The JVC, I
- 41:24Speaker 1: took that with me. But I also took something else, Sean.
- 41:28Speaker 1: I took my iPhone. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
- 41:33Speaker 1: I took that with me. And I put that under
- 41:36Speaker 1: the Ulanzi tripod that I have. And I just took
- 41:40Speaker 1: it for background. I ended up using that more. Then
- 41:46Speaker 1: I used the DSLR because of its low light capabilities,
- 41:50Speaker 1: its sound pickup. I didn't have to hook even a
- 41:53Speaker 1: mic up. It looked and it worked great. I was
- 41:57Speaker 1: really impressed with it.
- 41:59Speaker 2: So when I first started working at Fox, I still
- 42:02Speaker 2: had a flip phone. And this was in 2009, right?
- 42:05Speaker 2: So iPhones were relatively new. The iPhone 3G, I think,
- 42:09Speaker 2: was still the newest model.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 42:11Speaker 2: Maybe the iPhone 4 at that point, I think, was
- 42:13Speaker 2: maybe released in 2011. phones were not used for capturing media.
- 42:20Speaker 2: They just weren't. They could take like 360 by 240 video.
- 42:25Speaker 1: Right.
- 42:25Speaker 2: And maybe a 200 megabit pixel, not even a gigapixel.
- 42:32Speaker 2: Or megapixel, right? Mega, whatever. Half of that. It's crazy,
- 42:37Speaker 2: the pictures you took on those phones. Nowadays.
- 42:43Speaker 2: You have photojournalists or MMJs, multimedia journalists that are going
- 42:47Speaker 2: out and that's all they have is a phone.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:50Speaker 2: And they've got a DJI mic mini or a lavalier
- 42:54Speaker 2: mic or a stick mic that pairs with your phone
- 42:58Speaker 2: and they're shooting it on their iPhones.
- 43:00Speaker 1: The quality was amazing.
- 43:01Speaker 2: And for TV stations, a lot of them have the
- 43:05Speaker 2: ability to use the bonded cellular pieces like live view, TVU,
- 43:09Speaker 2: et cetera. And you just go live from your phone.
- 43:12Speaker 2: So you set your phone on tripod, you flip it
- 43:15Speaker 2: around so the front facing camera so you can see yourself,
- 43:17Speaker 2: so you're framed up nice. You put up a light,
- 43:20Speaker 2: a ring light, et cetera, and you're going live from
- 43:23Speaker 2: a scene of an accident or a scene of a
- 43:26Speaker 2: crime that they're covering or something, right? And it was
- 43:30Speaker 2: interesting to see the transition from how you captured media
- 43:36Speaker 2: to how it got online.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. From.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Because once Facebook and Twitter and stuff allowed you to
- 43:45Speaker 2: start doing live content, the push was you get to
- 43:50Speaker 2: the story, you start shooting with your phone first because
- 43:54Speaker 2: we can get live content back.
- 43:57Speaker 1: I will tell you one thing I did differently. I
- 43:59Speaker 1: didn't use the iPhone app for capturing. I actually used
- 44:04Speaker 1: the Blackmagic Design camera app, which is free.
- 44:08Speaker 2: For those of you who don't know what that is
- 44:10Speaker 2: and you have an iPhone, the Blackmagic camera application is
- 44:15Speaker 2: hands down the best camera app you can get for
- 44:17Speaker 2: your phone, period.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:18Speaker 2: It unlocks so many more features for you to get
- 44:22Speaker 2: higher quality, higher, better frame rates, better control, aperture control,
- 44:25Speaker 2: shutter control, ISO, whatever. Get that application for your camera.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:30Speaker 2: It's great.
- 44:30Speaker 1: It ended up working really good.
- 44:32Speaker 2: If you're doing any amount of video work on your
- 44:35Speaker 2: phone outside of just like taking pictures of your kids
- 44:37Speaker 2: or whatever, The Blackmagic camera app is fantastic.
- 44:41Speaker 1: One thing, though, to remember is set up a free
- 44:43Speaker 1: account with Blackmagic. Because what will happen is if you
- 44:47Speaker 1: take it with the iPhone, you can't see it in photos.
- 44:53Speaker 1: You have to see it in the app.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Correct.
- 44:54Speaker 1: And this is what I had to do. And I
- 44:57Speaker 1: didn't try a different method, but I had to actually
- 45:00Speaker 1: upload the proxies, upload the video to the Blackmagic site,
- 45:04Speaker 1: grab it, and then download it. But it only gives
- 45:06Speaker 1: you two choices. two gigabytes of storage. So I had
- 45:10Speaker 1: to upload, download, delete, then upload the rest of them.
- 45:14Speaker 1: So again, there's a little workflow there, but you could pay,
- 45:17Speaker 1: I think you pay for extra storage, but either way
- 45:20Speaker 1: it was, it was great. I appreciate your advice. It
- 45:23Speaker 1: did end up coming out pretty good. The problem with
- 45:26Speaker 1: the Canon at night, and it's gotta be my old eyes.
- 45:31Speaker 1: I couldn't get it. There were some points where focus
- 45:34Speaker 1: was a little like, it was a little questionable.
- 45:36Speaker 2: Well, so, You got to remember, right? Low light means
- 45:39Speaker 2: you have to have your aperture all the way open.
- 45:41Speaker 2: So you're probably shooting at an F2 or an F2. 8
- 45:44Speaker 2: or something, right?
- 45:45Speaker 1: Yep.
- 45:46Speaker 2: So that means your depth of field is going to
- 45:47Speaker 2: be very, very shallow.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:49Speaker 2: So that's the problem with low light. And some cameras
- 45:52Speaker 2: do it better than others. But unless you have the
- 45:57Speaker 2: ability to bump the gain up and not get the noise,
- 46:00Speaker 2: you need a fast lens or the ability to have
- 46:04Speaker 2: just that gain. structure to give you the, give you the,
- 46:07Speaker 2: so you can drop your iris down a little bit.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Now I'm thinking maybe I should invest in it. I
- 46:11Speaker 1: was thinking about getting the DJI grip and, you know,
- 46:15Speaker 1: mounting my camera on that. And I was at the
- 46:16Speaker 1: setup look really crazy. Now I'm thinking just get the,
- 46:19Speaker 1: the Osmo or use an Osmo or getting a grip
- 46:24Speaker 1: for the iPhone and using that. It worked really well
- 46:26Speaker 1: with the Ulanzi because I could raise it up in
- 46:28Speaker 1: the air and get the crowd. Yeah.
- 46:30Speaker 2: But I personally for the Osmo is great. It's a
- 46:33Speaker 2: little big for what I think you would need it for.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:36Speaker 2: The Pocket Mini, I think, is what would be every rally.
- 46:39Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. That would be good, too.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Because it's very small. It packs in very well. It's gimbaled.
- 46:46Speaker 2: It looks great. We have guys from ESPN that come
- 46:49Speaker 2: in and they want to shoot locator stuff before our games.
- 46:52Speaker 2: They'll just walk around campus with a DJI Mini and
- 46:55Speaker 2: in 20 minutes they come back and they've got tons
- 46:57Speaker 2: of footage.
- 46:58Speaker 1: All right. I got something to show you. If you're
- 47:00Speaker 1: watching on the camera, you can see this. We have
- 47:02Speaker 1: just a couple of minutes so I can get this
- 47:04Speaker 1: in there. This is the Asus ExpertBook. We had sent
- 47:08Speaker 1: back the Google book that we were looking at, and
- 47:13Speaker 1: they said, hey, you want to take a look at
- 47:15Speaker 1: a business model? Because normally they send us consumer-grade laptops.
- 47:20Speaker 1: This is a business-grade laptop. And this is the Asus
- 47:24Speaker 1: ExpertBook 9, the Ultra 9, which is nice, very thin,
- 47:29Speaker 1: less than two pounds. And it features a For a
- 47:35Speaker 1: 3K OLED screen, 14-inch, but it has these security features
- 47:42Speaker 1: in it, Sean, that are made for IT. It has
- 47:47Speaker 1: the ability for an IT professional that is managing these
- 47:51Speaker 1: within their workspace to be able to get in and
- 47:56Speaker 1: lock it down if the laptop is stolen. To process
- 48:01Speaker 1: all within the processor, it's an Ultra 9. processor that
- 48:04Speaker 1: is on here, Intel, and do all the processing on
- 48:09Speaker 1: here that you don't have to go into the cloud.
- 48:12Speaker 1: So if you're working on a sensitive document, you're not
- 48:15Speaker 1: doing it in the cloud, you're doing it all on here.
- 48:17Speaker 1: You don't have to worry about if you're using any
- 48:19Speaker 1: AI elements, all processed on here. It has the ability
- 48:24Speaker 1: to recover. So a BIOS with auto recovery. So if
- 48:29Speaker 1: there is an infection on it, the BIOS can be
- 48:31Speaker 1: recovered and then you get back to work. So pretty
- 48:36Speaker 1: neat stuff. Retails, though, for about $ 3, 500. Oof. And it
- 48:42Speaker 1: comes with a, I want to say it's a one
- 48:46Speaker 1: terabyte drive in it. Might be two. And it has
- 48:49Speaker 1: 32 gigabytes of memory.
- 48:51Speaker 2: So that's the cost right there is the storage.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Right? It is.
- 48:55Speaker 2: It's unreal, the cost of storage. But no. So good notebooks, good,
- 49:01Speaker 2: tough notebooks, you will pay a premium for. Especially the
- 49:04Speaker 2: business side, right? Getting in that discrete TPM 2.0 and
- 49:08Speaker 2: the biometric stuff, that's not included in a lot of stuff.
- 49:11Speaker 2: That takes extra R & D. They got to recoup
- 49:12Speaker 2: those costs.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 49:14Speaker 2: And being able to put it into a management system
- 49:16Speaker 2: is nice. And it looks nice. The white looks really nice.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Nice.
- 49:20Speaker 2: The screen looks good. I mean, just from here, even
- 49:22Speaker 2: looking at it, the screen looks really, really sharp.
- 49:26Speaker 1: The other thing it has on it, too, is neat.
- 49:28Speaker 1: It does have the camera shutter. So the camera, so
- 49:31Speaker 1: you can shut it down, you know, turn off the
- 49:33Speaker 1: camera or turn it on. But when it's on, say
- 49:36Speaker 1: I'm sitting at my desk and I'm working on a project.
- 49:40Speaker 1: and I have to step away. When you step away,
- 49:45Speaker 1: if enabled, when you step away from your desk, it
- 49:48Speaker 1: goes into lockdown mode. So the only way to turn
- 49:52Speaker 1: it back on is when you step in front of
- 49:54Speaker 1: it and you enter your fingerprint on the biometric and say,
- 49:58Speaker 1: it's me, and it'll bring your product back up. So
- 50:02Speaker 1: it can keep your documents, keep it safe. Because let's
- 50:06Speaker 1: face it, somebody that, a business person that's on the road,
- 50:09Speaker 1: A lot, they can be a target in an airport
- 50:12Speaker 1: or a hotel. So again, it's a different way. And
- 50:15Speaker 1: it's got like, I want to say 20 hours of
- 50:17Speaker 1: battery life. Battery life in these is becoming.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Oh, battery life. Like my laptop at work, I have
- 50:22Speaker 2: an M5 MacBook.
- 50:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:25Speaker 2: I barely have anything plugged in during the day. Like
- 50:28Speaker 2: if I'm moving around between control rooms and stuff, I'm like, oh,
- 50:32Speaker 2: I've got 60% battery and I'm almost ready to go home. Right.
- 50:36Speaker 2: And it's not like I'm not using it. I'm checking emails.
- 50:38Speaker 2: I'm doing stuff. I'm browsing the web and I'm not
- 50:40Speaker 2: doing any hardcore processing or anything like that. But it's
- 50:43Speaker 2: it lasts all day without being plugged in. It's fantastic.
- 50:47Speaker 1: So some of the thing about if you're if you're
- 50:49Speaker 1: if you're a business professional, if you're looking for. You know,
- 50:53Speaker 1: you're looking for a solution for you, for your company. Yeah,
- 50:58Speaker 1: it's going to be a lot more money than dropping,
- 51:00Speaker 1: you know, seven, eight hundred bucks. It's better than a
- 51:03Speaker 1: Google book. As far as what you're going to be
- 51:05Speaker 1: doing with it, it may be worth it. And $ 3, 500
- 51:10Speaker 1: for that. It's pretty nice. I'm going to have to
- 51:13Speaker 1: get it so that we can send one to Sean
- 51:15Speaker 1: at least. Because you'd have some fun with it. I
- 51:17Speaker 1: know you would.
- 51:19Speaker 2: I would probably play DOS games on it.
- 51:22Speaker 1: Perfect. Or you'd be playing Ocarina of Time.
- 51:27Speaker 2: That's not on PC.
- 51:29Speaker 1: That's on Nintendo Switch. Is it going to be on PC? No.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Are they going to port it?
- 51:33Speaker 1: No. man.
- 51:35Speaker 2: All right.
- 51:36Speaker 1: Well, okay. We're going to take another quick break. We
- 51:39Speaker 1: come back. I don't know if we get, I actually
- 51:41Speaker 1: had a question that came in. We didn't get a
- 51:43Speaker 1: chance to put in our script and I've got something
- 51:45Speaker 1: here to show you. So we'll do that when we
- 51:47Speaker 1: come back with tech talk radio. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 51:50Speaker 2: I'm Sean DeWerd. You can find us on the web,
- 51:51Speaker 2: tech talk radio.com. Send us an X tech talk radio.
- 51:54Speaker 2: We'll be right back.
- 51:55Speaker 1: And now back to tech talk radio. You know, the
- 52:00Speaker 1: show is airing on Halloween. So it's Halloween night. We
- 52:04Speaker 1: got to say, you know, happy Halloween.
- 52:07Speaker 2: And here's a picture of us and the kids. It'll
- 52:11Speaker 2: be on the screen.
- 52:12Speaker 1: I like that. All right. I did get a question.
- 52:18Speaker 1: A woman has her smartphone. It's full. She can't take
- 52:23Speaker 1: any more pictures. That whole bit.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Did you talk to Caitlin recently? That's why she got
- 52:29Speaker 2: a new phone.
- 52:30Speaker 1: Because it was full? Because she couldn't take any more pictures. Well,
- 52:35Speaker 1: this lady could not take any more pictures. And then
- 52:39Speaker 1: she said her hard drive on her computer was full, too.
- 52:42Speaker 1: So she was stuck. She couldn't transfer them to her computer.
- 52:45Speaker 1: So I recommended this. This is the SanDisk iXpand flash drive. Now,
- 52:52Speaker 1: it only goes up to 256 gigabytes. However, priced at
- 52:57Speaker 1: around $ 100... You may be able to find them cheaper.
- 53:01Speaker 1: What they have is a USB-C connector, or if you
- 53:05Speaker 1: have an old school iPhone, you got a lightning connector.
- 53:07Speaker 1: It's super easy. You download the free SanDisk app. Then
- 53:12Speaker 1: you can take the connector, plug it into the phone,
- 53:15Speaker 1: and transfer your images to the device. Again, 256 gigabytes
- 53:20Speaker 1: on here. If you've got a one terabyte phone that
- 53:22Speaker 1: is full, you're going to have to get four of them.
- 53:26Speaker 1: But it is, you know, at least if you need
- 53:28Speaker 1: to get some, Info off the phone. You don't want
- 53:31Speaker 1: to lose it. You want to store it. SanDisk has
- 53:34Speaker 1: an option for you. It's called the iExplorer. So I
- 53:37Speaker 1: wanted to make sure we featured that.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Kayla could have used that because she was getting mad
- 53:42Speaker 2: because she couldn't even send pictures and text messages because
- 53:45Speaker 2: her phone was full.
- 53:47Speaker 1: You tend to keep everything. Me? Oh, God.
- 53:50Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm a digital person.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm going to look this up because it changes
- 53:54Speaker 2: every time. Let me see. I can go back and
- 53:56Speaker 2: look at every message I've ever sent with my iMessage.
- 53:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 54:00Speaker 2: All the way back to God knows when, when iMessages
- 54:03Speaker 2: first became a thing, right?
- 54:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:04Speaker 2: So that would have been, I don't even know when.
- 54:06Speaker 2: Let's see. Hold on. Storage, general storage.
- 54:12Speaker 1: The other idea is cloud storage.
- 54:14Speaker 2: I mean, if you want to. So my iCloud backups
- 54:17Speaker 2: go to the iCloud storage. So I've got 100 gigs
- 54:22Speaker 2: of iCloud storage that I use. So I've got 100. Oh,
- 54:25Speaker 2: this isn't right.
- 54:29Speaker 1: This is wrong. All right. Listen, we're running up against
- 54:34Speaker 1: the clock here.
- 54:35Speaker 2: I keep a lot of stuff on my phone.
- 54:36Speaker 1: It's lots, lots, lots. Digital hoarding is, is really bad
- 54:41Speaker 1: and it's easy to do. I bought a hard drive
- 54:44Speaker 1: and then a backup drive and then a backup drive.
- 54:47Speaker 1: And now I want to get another backup drive so
- 54:49Speaker 1: I could copy everything from those two backup drives onto
- 54:51Speaker 1: that drive. Cause I think it's going to solve my problem.
- 54:54Speaker 2: I'm building a true NAS server. So I have enough
- 54:57Speaker 2: storage to put, I bought a case just to put in.
- 55:03Speaker 1: No, you did not.
- 55:04Speaker 2: I bought a case that can take eight drives. I've
- 55:08Speaker 2: got four eight-terabyte drives that I'm going to put in there,
- 55:11Speaker 2: and it's going to end up giving me like 22
- 55:13Speaker 2: terabytes of storage.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Amazing. All right, listen, that's it for this week's show.
- 55:17Speaker 1: Happy Halloween. I'm Andy Taylor.
- 55:19Speaker 2: I'm Sean DeWeer. Hoard your data at my house.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Have a great night.
- 55:24Speaker 2: Have a great week. We'll talk to you next week.
