- 0:00Hello and welcome back to another edition of Five things
- 0:03Friday Stroke, the retail podcast.
- 0:07I'm fortunate enough to be joined by Fadi from Riyadh in
- 0:11Saudi Arabia. We as part of our global mission
- 0:15on bringing the best of retail to you, the, the retail
- 0:20enthusiast across the world, I thought, what better way to look
- 0:25at what's going on in the, in the, in the region by talking to
- 0:29someone in the region rather than having opinions or
- 0:32perspectives. So Vadi, thank you so much for
- 0:36coming to the show. I know you, you're quite active
- 0:39in the retail community right in, in, in Riyadh and in the, in
- 0:43the, in the region. OK, so actually I'm a fashion a
- 0:48retail consultant with over 10 years of experience in the
- 0:51retail industry. So I work with consultancy firm
- 0:55and retail across GCC region and beyond.
- 0:58Basically I help them adopt, grow and understand the local
- 1:01market. You know Alex, the thrive and
- 1:03today rapidly changing environment also spent Yeah.
- 1:08And since 2023, I had the owner of being part of Saudi retail
- 1:12firm as a jury member. So to be honest, Alex, this has
- 1:16been far beyond what I ever expected.
- 1:18It becomes for me a mission and a passion.
- 1:21I always say that my mission beyond expectation, so this is
- 1:26basically what I'm trying to do. Oh, it's fantastic.
- 1:29I mean, I've seen you all over LinkedIn, so you're obviously
- 1:31doing something really well. So why don't we just dive
- 1:35straight in? Tell me.
- 1:36I mean, for those of us who don't know the Kingdom, who
- 1:39don't know Riyadh, who don't know the cultural differences,
- 1:42just give us an overview, if you like, of what's happening in in
- 1:46the, in the retail industry within the region.
- 1:49I believe that Saudi Arabia now is a dynamic and unique market
- 1:54when you talk about young digitally and undergoing rapid
- 1:58transformation, especially in the light of Vision 2013.
- 2:02So I believe that also Saudi Arabia has a strong marketplace,
- 2:07an amazing opportunity for all brand and businesses to to
- 2:12realise and match the commercial success.
- 2:15Got you. And is there from how you see is
- 2:18there one industry that's growing faster than another
- 2:22other you know, in terms of like fashion or grocery or what, what
- 2:27sort of the the major growth industry within the region?
- 2:31Actually, it's more about e-commerce and digital things,
- 2:34you know, with Generation Z and all that stuff.
- 2:37I think today you and I will embark, will embark many things
- 2:41together. We'll talk more about the five
- 2:43trend shipping, the retail sector also.
- 2:45Sure. OK.
- 2:46Yeah. And I think it's a, it's a great
- 2:48segue. Why don't, why don't you tell me
- 2:49the five things that you see from your opinion that are
- 2:53shaping the industry? OK, So I'll start with the Omnia
- 2:58channel because you know Alex, nowadays especially after 2020,
- 3:04we all can notice that customer behaviour changing so fast,
- 3:09Yanni, it's like an overnight changes.
- 3:11So customer now start to expect more from the brand.
- 3:15They expect more in terms of quality, delivery price and even
- 3:19customer support. So we also notice a high
- 3:24competition between retail and e-commerce.
- 3:27So I believe that today being present online or offline is no
- 3:31longer enough. So I always say that offline or
- 3:35online, at the end of the day, it's a win, win, win
- 3:39competition. So customer now with more
- 3:42seamless experience like across everything, website, physical
- 3:47store, even in delivery. So I want to share with you also
- 3:53one example that stands out to me as a pharmacist.
- 3:57So some of them really kneeled at Mashala.
- 4:00They created this super smooth integrated shopping experience.
- 4:05Like you can walk into the pharmacy or just order from the
- 4:09app and it get a delivery like within an hour.
- 4:11I believe that the whole, yeah, the whole experience feel more
- 4:15connected. Let me think what do you think
- 4:17about also Omnia channel? Obviously from my perspective, I
- 4:21imagine in the United them the maturity of Omni channel is
- 4:24quite mature because lots of retailers understand that they
- 4:28have to have multiple channels and what they've been focused on
- 4:33is getting the the back end. You know, they're like their
- 4:36business is structured in a way that they can compete more
- 4:41effectively across all channels. In fact that there is only one
- 4:45channel, right And that's where the customers, but that that's
- 4:48in for example, in the UK or the US where the markets are very
- 4:52mature, but in different areas within Europe and within
- 4:56Southeast Asia, we see that there's a different approach to
- 5:01Omni channel. Everyone wants to be Omni.
- 5:04Obviously all retailers understand the importance of it.
- 5:07It's just it's not that easy when you're not built to be
- 5:11multiple channel because maybe you've only come from physical
- 5:15stores and now you're becoming digital.
- 5:17Yeah, absolutely. I believe that it's not just
- 5:21about being present everywhere, it's about being fast,
- 5:25personalised Danny, across all those touch point.
- 5:29Yeah, yeah, indeed, indeed. OK, so that's the first one.
- 5:33What's the second one? Also, I want to talk about
- 5:36customer experience, which is something I'm really passionate
- 5:39about it. So yeah, you know what's
- 5:44interesting, Alex, about customer experience.
- 5:48We are not just seeing a shift in how people shop, but also
- 5:52why, why, why, why they choose certain brand.
- 5:56I believe that it's no longer just about how offering the
- 5:59biggest discount. I we moved from the price wars,
- 6:03experience wars, especially now with the Generation Z here in
- 6:08Saudi Arabia. Yeah.
- 6:09What they're really they're looking for is that personalised
- 6:13experience. So, yeah.
- 6:16So I want to ask you, when was the last time you walked into
- 6:20the store and you feel you felt like the different, I mean in
- 6:24terms of experience? I think the honest answer to
- 6:29that is in the in New York when I walked into a kids bookstore
- 6:34or a kids toy shop. There's a couple of great
- 6:36examples in in the US where the way that retailers position
- 6:43themselves for selling to children, I really enjoyed.
- 6:47So that was from New York, from the UK when I went to Gym Shark
- 6:51in Oxford St sorry in Regent Street.
- 6:54That was really, really impressive.
- 6:56How they've blended experience where you can have a gym session
- 7:01you you can have a class or go and do some weights and the
- 7:05showers and and changing rooms in a retail store.
- 7:10I thought that was super awesome.
- 7:12And then in Shanghai, I loved watching Boy sang.
- 7:16I think there, I don't know how to pronounce it properly, but
- 7:19basically they sell luxury sportswear and they had an
- 7:23internal ski slope. They had an internal freezer
- 7:27where you can put, you know, a jacket for the Antarctic, walk
- 7:31into the freezer and see how warm it is.
- 7:34So super, super cool from experiential.
- 7:37So that I think they would be probably my top three or four.
- 7:41How about for you? Absolutely.
- 7:42That's kind of, yeah, that's kind of experience.
- 7:46It's not just about there, not just about selling a product,
- 7:50it's about creating a journey. 100 percent, 100%.
- 7:55How about for you? Is there, is there anything,
- 7:56Luke, that you've seen that is is is like that for you?
- 7:59Yeah, lots of, lots of lots of great experience.
- 8:02Actually, OK, tell, tell, tell me.
- 8:04Explain it for me. Yeah, especially during Ramadan
- 8:06season. So I remember last Ramadan when
- 8:09I went to the shopping mall, I saw like this kind of one in one
- 8:14store. They tried to present like local
- 8:17food inside the store. You know, that's something
- 8:20that's something I I yeah. It's unforgettable experience
- 8:24because I never imagined like shopping and find food like in
- 8:28store and clothing stores. So it's something for me, it's
- 8:32Yanni. It's the real thing, yeah.
- 8:34Oh, I see what you mean. You OK?
- 8:37Because obviously I presume it was night time.
- 8:40So you you could you were you were allowed to eat at that
- 8:45time, right. Yeah.
- 8:46Yeah, yeah, yeah. After after mother appears.
- 8:48Yes, interesting. So going into like a fashion
- 8:51store and seeing that they've got I presume it's like dates or
- 8:55things like that local, local, local produce.
- 8:58Yeah, that they're yeah, that's really cool.
- 9:00OK, that's, that's an interesting one.
- 9:02It's. To Break to help you break your
- 9:05fast during your shopping. So customer experience was #2
- 9:08what's #3 for you, OK. I think that we talk about a
- 9:13trial and a customer experience. Let's shift the gear of Betiani
- 9:17to something really important to data and AI, seriously changing
- 9:24the game and now in retail industry.
- 9:27So I believe that behind the scenes retailers here in Saudi
- 9:32Arabia are going all on data analytics and AI.
- 9:36They try to using and adopt this technology to understand more
- 9:40consumer behaviour and try to manage inventory.
- 9:43So they try to adopt technology to personalise the customer
- 9:49experience. So I want to ask you another
- 9:52question if you allow me. OK.
- 9:54How do you feel really about the personalising recommendation?
- 9:58It's helpful or kind creepy. I, I no, not at all.
- 10:01I think they don't have enough when you opt into personalised.
- 10:05So if you opt into a loyalty programme, the expectation is
- 10:09that the retailer, you're giving permission for them to know
- 10:12something about you. And so I don't think they go far
- 10:15enough. I think people want more,
- 10:18deeper, wider relationships when they have opted in only when
- 10:23they've said yes. Obviously if they've said no,
- 10:26then they want to be left alone and you know, they want their
- 10:29privacy respected. But when they've chosen to
- 10:32engage and they say yes, please, you know, you know, personalise
- 10:37my experience with you, then I don't think, especially for the
- 10:42new generation, I don't think it's it's creepy or icky.
- 10:49That's what I expect. And I know that's what Gen Z and
- 10:52Gen Alpha expect as well. When, when they're when they're
- 10:56sort of interacting with retailers or, you know, on
- 11:00whether they're on a shopping website, on an e-commerce
- 11:03website or in store. Yeah.
- 11:04Yeah, absolutely. I believe that when and then
- 11:07when it when it's done right, it saves like time and feel super
- 11:11relevant back in 2021. And I mentioned also in one of
- 11:16my speech that investing in innovation would be the key to
- 11:21driving the economy in the years ahead.
- 11:24Looking looking at me where we are now Alex that could be more
- 11:28true any today that is not just like and I seem to have its
- 11:35engine behind smart decision and the innovation especially when
- 11:39we talk about retail industry. Yeah, no, I, I totally agree.
- 11:42I think, I think retailers challenge is finding the skilled
- 11:48staff, understanding the systems that they need to put in place
- 11:53and building the processes to enable their business.
- 11:57So I think it's I, it's, it's difficult.
- 12:01And so I have a lot of empathy, yeah, for retailers who are
- 12:04trying to do that or leaders, because I don't think it's easy.
- 12:09I want to mention also something really important from my any
- 12:14From my experience, we cannot force like people for example
- 12:19above 7070 to use technology. I believe that retailers need to
- 12:24find another convenient solution for all age group.
- 12:28Now focus just engine a Generation Z, but we also need
- 12:32to focus more in all the people. At the end of the day, we invest
- 12:36in technology just to enhance the customer experience, not
- 12:39replacing human connection. Yeah, that's, that's a really
- 12:42important one. It does feel that some of the
- 12:45customers are being left behind and yeah, well, it probably is
- 12:50the I don't Yeah, the older generation or the less, less
- 12:53digital native people who are not used to being online.
- 12:58And just a few weeks ago, yeah, just a few weeks ago.
- 13:01OK, just two weeks ago, I had a meeting with one of my clients
- 13:06and we discuss, you know, all about the ARVR things,
- 13:10technology. He asked me very simple
- 13:12question, lady, how can we provide customer experience
- 13:16without using technology? So actually my answer was very
- 13:21simple, just focus. You have to focus in three
- 13:24pillars, first communication, second transparency, third
- 13:29three, try to create easy return policy.
- 13:31That's all. How about your advice?
- 13:33How we can how come brand like provide customer experience
- 13:38without using technology or far away from using technology?
- 13:44Yeah, you want me to tell you? OK, this is and so in my mind
- 13:54where, where brands get it wrong is when they forget what their
- 13:58customer mission is. So for example, like the all of
- 14:02the stores that I, I mentioned, they imagine you're a fashion
- 14:07retailer and you, you sell clothes.
- 14:11OK, now those clothes for specific, maybe some of someone
- 14:17wants something to wear to their office, maybe someone wants
- 14:21something to wear to dinner. And So what what retailers need
- 14:26to do is to zoom out and think of the customer journey in the
- 14:32aspect of what the customer's coming in for, What's the
- 14:35shopping mission and those shopping missions.
- 14:37Sometimes you come in and maybe you're, you're greeted with
- 14:41something that has nothing to do with the mission that you're on.
- 14:46And so therefore you as a customer become really
- 14:49frustrated. And so the balance is
- 14:52understanding if if you're buying food for dinner, maybe
- 14:59the experience is having four or five items put together as an
- 15:06idea for a Friday night evening meal with your family or so
- 15:12people. Unfortunately, the customer
- 15:13journey depending on who you talk to within the retail,
- 15:18whether it's merchandising, whether it's marketing, whether
- 15:21it's technology, operations, they all have a different view
- 15:24on it. And when you think of where it
- 15:27works well, which is online e-commerce, Amazon, that's
- 15:31because only one person owns that customer journey.
- 15:35And that's what I think retailers need to do a little
- 15:38bit more of, especially, I mean, in the UK as a classic example
- 15:43where the idea is if you're coming into a sports shop, I
- 15:48just need to give you product. And yeah, that that was true.
- 15:54But when you look at what Jim Shark is doing is like, well,
- 15:58don't just come and buy from me, come and spend time with me.
- 16:02And so that's, that's again, what I see a lot in Shanghai in
- 16:07China, where retailers. Yeah, it is.
- 16:11It is absolutely. Maybe we should.
- 16:14We should. This is.
- 16:16I'm curious. Let's let's move on because I'm
- 16:18conscious of time #4 yeah. I want to also talk about
- 16:24sustainability because now you're seeing more especially
- 16:29among your generation among younger customer in Saudi
- 16:33Arabia. I mean, it's a shift towards
- 16:36sustainability and ethical retail.
- 16:38So and I think that's becoming more common now even in
- 16:42supermarket here in Saudi Arabia, we'll see more eco
- 16:45friendly option like for example, reusable bags, simply
- 16:51because this generation expect that and really care about
- 16:55sustainability. And if you ask me as an expert,
- 16:59I believe this is not just a trend, it's a mindset.
- 17:03The younger generation is really driving that shift, if you agree
- 17:07with me. So they're choosing a brand
- 17:11basically, they reflect their values, especially when it comes
- 17:14to environment, sustainability and all these things.
- 17:18So it's no longer just about the product itself.
- 17:21Sustainability is a really tough one, but I think price and
- 17:24affordability is is a, is a big thing.
- 17:28And what we've seen here is that when people have to make a
- 17:32choice over over price or sustainability, they're choosing
- 17:38price. It influences people.
- 17:42So yes, they are influenced, but ultimately they are choosing
- 17:47price as a majority. Now, obviously there is a
- 17:50minority that will say, OK, maybe I pay more for something,
- 17:57but by paying more, I end up with something that's, I don't
- 18:00know, unique. It lasts longer, it's got better
- 18:03materials, it's better for the planet.
- 18:06But I don't think we're there yet because companies like
- 18:09Sheen, Timu and fast fashion retailers are just, you know,
- 18:16churning out product. And so I think, I think it's one
- 18:20like in, again, the difference between for me when I'm Shanghai
- 18:24to Manhattan, when you go around Shanghai, if the retailer is B
- 18:31Corp certified, which is basically a certification of
- 18:34sustainability plus ethics and other elements, you don't hardly
- 18:39see that in New York when you walk around the stores.
- 18:42So there is a real big mind shift or cultural difference in
- 18:47people's approach to sustainability.
- 18:49Yeah, so, OK, that was #4 tell me #5.
- 18:53OK. I want to talk also about most
- 18:56exciting thing happening in Saudi retail now.
- 19:01So yeah, it's like this kind of collab between local identity
- 19:06meets global standard and I And I want to also share a quick
- 19:12note about localisation last year during my participation.
- 19:17And so the research firm, they had like opportunity to moderate
- 19:20a session focused on how tradition meets tomorrow.
- 19:24So basically the discussion was incredibly engaging and really
- 19:29insightful and it's really highlighted how localization is
- 19:34relevant and important to our marketplace.
- 19:38So in a person, a lot if you ask me, I would say like
- 19:42localization is something I'm truly passionate about it.
- 19:46And I believe that local insight is everything.
- 19:50You have to understand the people you are speaking to.
- 19:53You have to understand demographic diversity.
- 19:55You have to also understand your target customer habits, value,
- 20:00even their expectation. So in a market like Saudi
- 20:04Arabia, that balance now is more important than ever.
- 20:08Customer here are smart, connected and proud of their
- 20:12identity. And also customer, I think
- 20:16everywhere, everything, any around the globe are aware of
- 20:19their power and influence. I love it.
- 20:22I think listen, it's, I think that's a beautiful way to end
- 20:26the podcast because I think that's such a, a nice way to
- 20:31reflect on, on the market and the, the community, if you like,
- 20:35and then the retail industry within the region.
- 20:39So Gaudi, thank you. Sorry, I pronounce it properly.
- 20:42Gaudi, thank you so much for giving up your time to be with
- 20:45us. I, I love being interviewed
- 20:49that, that was very cool. Thank you very.
- 20:51Much. Yeah, Yeah.
- 20:55I love it. Thank you for giving me the
- 20:56opportunity. It's a conversation.
- 21:01It's a it's a conversation. My pleasure.
- 21:03And hopefully maybe actually, if you've got anything, any
- 21:06recommendations of where I should go in Riyadh, I would
- 21:11welcome anything because obviously I'm there next week.
- 21:14So please feel free to say oh you must drop by but blah blah
- 21:18blah place I would I would recommend any recommendations.
- 21:22OK, I'll send it to you. No worries.
- 21:24Thank you, have a lovely day. Thank you, Alex.
- 21:27Bye.
